Regularity in the emotional functioning of a human in specific time can be determined by cycles characterised by and social changes. The objective of the research was to establish whether the population subjected to the research-related tests experienced daily and weekly mood variability and, if this relation has been confirmed, describe the latter. Mood was tested by means of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Watson, Clark & Tellegen, 1988). Subjects judged their mood by means of two indicators (PA and NA) for one week, on a daily basis, and at 3-hour intervals. Daily and weekly variability was assessed by comparing averaged results obtained from all measurements carried out at specific times of the day and days of the week. The assessment of internal group differences was performed with repeated measures analysis of variance. The result obtained in the tests indicated the existence of daily differences of positive affect as well as weekly differences in relation to positive and negative affect.

In the present study, we explored the role of liking in the social induction of affect. Dispositional likeability was manipulated by written reports describing a sender as a likeable or dislikeable character. Afterwards participants watched short videos presenting the sender displaying happy or sad emotional expressions. We expected that exposure to the likeable sender would lead to reactions concordant with his emotional expression (assimilation), whereas exposure to the dislikeable sender would result in discordant reactions (contrast). The results indicated that dispositional likeability influenced the social induction of affect when the sender expressed positive emotions. Moreover, liking mediated the effects of the happy sender’s dispositional likeability on participants’ affective state. Exposure to the sad sender, however, led to assimilation regardless of the sender’s dispositional likeability.

Psychology well-describes the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of human well-being. Within the construct of well-being, psychologists distinguish eudemonic positive affect and hedonic positive affect, although they are not only nor mutually exclusive approaches. Empirical findings have documented a correlation between the general positive affect and favourable health outcomes. Recent discoveries also show a biological pattern, which underlines the correlation. Thanks to describing conserved transcriptional response to adversity (CTRA) mechanism, a new direction of research which explores a relationship between profile of gene expression in immune cells and positive affect, is emerging.

The presented study aimed to determine the relationship between affective structures and academic burnout among male and female third grade high school students in Zahedan in the 2016/2017 school year. The descriptive-correlational study had a sample including 362 students selected with the use of a multistage cluster sampling method. To collect data, the Academic Burnout Questionnaire (Berso et al., 1997) and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Watson et al., 1988) were used. Results of the present study indicated that positive affect was significantly and diversely related to the subscales of academic burnout (academic fatigue, academic apathy, and academic inefficiency). Moreover, negative affect was significantly and directly related to all the subscales of academic burnout. Results of an independent t-test demonstrated that there were no significant differences between the male and female students with regard to positive and negative affects. However, academic burnout was higher among the male students compared to their female counterparts. Furthermore, results of a stepwise regression analysis showed that in the first step, positive affect alone predicted 22% of the variance in academic burnout and in the second step, negative affect increased the power of predicting academic burnout to 28%. Given the predictive power of affect, it can be effectively applied to prevent academic burnout.

Psychosocial threats at work are one of the big challenges for the management of occupational health (WHO, 2008). The aim of this study was to assess the emotional balance and positivity ratio in the work of uniformed officers and identify differences between these formations. The study involved 218 policemen, firemen and probation personnel. Work-related Affective Well-being Scale was used (Van Katwyk, et al., 2000). Eustress and distress in the work context were relatively independent. Emotions of the opposite sign and low activity were moderately correlated. The officers usually experienced positive work-related emotional balance, with a predominance positive emotions of low activity. The positive ratio was low and reached 1,13. Positive affect was usually present in the work of firemen, while negative affect were often present in the work of policemen. It is probably due to different organization of working time and the emotional dissonance in the professional interpersonal relationships context.

Self-forgiveness is a process in which emotions, thoughts, and behaviours towards oneself are changed from negative to neutral or positive. In this study, we examined affectivity and emotional control (of anger, depression, anxiety) as emotional factors promoting or discouraging self-forgiveness. We examined self-forgiveness among Polish adults (N = 380, Mage = 36.26). Respondents completed the Polish version of the Positive Affect Negative Affect Scale, the Courtauld Emotional Control Scale (CECS), and the self-forgiveness subscale of Touissant’s Forgiveness Scale. In our cross-sectional study, we tested the moderating role of emotional control in the relationship between affectivity and self-forgiveness. Our results showed that positive affect was positively correlated with self-forgiveness, whereas negative affect was inversely correlated with self-forgiveness. Additionally, emotional control (anger, depression) was negatively correlated with self-forgiveness. Finally, total control of emotions and control of anger were found to be buffers between negative affect and self-forgiveness, the effect of negative affect on self-forgiveness being weaker among individuals who were more anger-controlling. The obtained results are a prelude to further research into the relationship between affectivity and self-forgiveness.

This article examines the concept of precarity from a feminist perspective, focused on love and affective labour, critically addressing the gender inequalities of neoliberal capitalism. The romantic, heterosexual model of love, typical for modern Western societies, has been dismantled and criticized in various ways, leading to contradictory solutions, which include its annihilation, sublation and modification, as well as (rather conservative) efforts to preserve it. However, love – in its different versions, both as theory and in practice – still provides models and solutions, not only for the neoliberal labour market and new forms of exploitation and expropriation of care and affective labour, but also for revolutionary ideas and transformations, among both feminists and Marxists. It thus requires a theory focusing on the sublation, rather than annihilation, of love’s past models. In my article I build such a perspective, signalling its potential for resistance and models for revolution in the times of neoliberal capitalism.

This paper reports on a study into the inter-relationships amongst foreign language pronunciation, mimicry ability and a range of personality and attitudinal factors. It will begin with a brief review of studies into affective influences on pronunciation ability (Arnold 1999, Hu & Reiterer 2009) and research into the importance of mimicry talent (Jilka 2009; Piske, MacKay & Flege 2001). This will be followed by a short description of a pilot study carried out prior to the main experiment. In the main study, a group of Polish learners of English completed a number of mimicry tasks in three languages: Italian, Dutch and Chinese, as well as a narration task in English. Mimicry performance and English pronunciation were then assessed by native speakers and compared. Participants also completed a questionnaire concerning their feelings about the languages they were to mimic and a second questionnaire designed to detect affective factors such as language learning anxiety, as well as attitudes towards the pronunciation of Polish and English. The pilot study suggested that the perceived attractiveness of the foreign language to be mimicked did not affect the performance of most participants, and that mimicry skill was fairly constant across languages. However, those who were particularly concerned about their personal appearance showed greater fluctuation in their ability to mimic and their performance appeared to be influenced by their attitude towards the language. This is referred to by the author as the Cecily effect. That study also confirmed the results of my previous experimental work showing that mimicry skill is correlated to some degree with English language pronunciation and that both pronunciation and mimicry are negatively affected by high levels of anxiety. The main study sets out to investigate whether or not these conclusions hold true for a larger sample population and also seeks to determine the effect of confidence and willingness to take risks on scores for both foreign language pronunciation and mimicry exercises.

What does being moral mean? On one hand people may justify mercy killing as sparing omeone’s suffering, but on the other hand they are still, in-fact, taking another’s life. According to Lind’s theory of moral competence (2008), it is based on consistent utilization of moral principles. Although common sense tells us that people’s affective states and levels of empathy may explain the differences, there is little direct evidence. The purpose of this study was to fill this gap by examining the relative contribution of empathy and affective state to moral competence. Results of the study revealed that although perspective taking and negative affective state were both significant predictors of moral competence, perspective taking was a stronger contributor. This suggests that the next time you deliberate over a moral dilemma (e.g., euthanasia), you should try understanding another person’s perspective rather than feeling empathy to make the best moral judgment.

The aim of the article is to describe the teacher’s (emotional) labor and its relationships with the formation of the teacher’s subjectivity. This relationship is especially visible when the relations between the teacher’s emotions and professional work are shown from the perspective of theoretical analyses and research in the field of the affective turn, especially the so-called "affective economies". Based on selected critical and political theories of emotions (i.a. Brian Massumi, Sarah Ahmed, and Teresa Brennan), the teacher’s (emotional) labor is presented here as a tool of auto-(trans)formations and (auto-)reflection and, at the same time, as a place of the affective marginalization of the teacher’s subjectivity and impoverishment of his or her agency. The presented way of conceptualizing emotional labor is a new look at the teacher’s emotions. It provides educational theorists and pedeutologists with analytical tools for empirical research and is also a voice in the discussion, an argument for considering affect in teacher education.

Learners’ attributions have received increasing attention in second/foreign language (L2) learning. Studies have shown that how learners attribute their performance influences not only their self-efficacy, motivation, and goal attainment but also their emotions (Hsieh, 2012; Hsieh & Kang, 2010; Hsieh & Shallert, 2008; Weiner, 2000, 2014). This exploratory study investigated how Japanese adult learners of L2 English attributed changes in their L2 learning attitudes and motivation through a 10-week TOEIC preparation program. It also examined emotions expressed in their attributional statements and the differences between learners with lower and higher L2 proficiency. A content analysis of open-ended questionnaire responses suggested eight attributional categories: perceived L2 improvement, enjoyment, positive feelings, increased L2 exposure, realization of L2 needs and importance, effective L2 instruction, and praise from the teacher for positive changes in attitudes and/or motivation and perceived inefficient L2 skills for negative changes in attitudes and/or motivation. Enjoyment was an emotion the most frequently mentioned by both groups while other emotions, such as joy, happiness, and disappointment, were expressed only by the beginner learners. These results offer important implications for L2 pedagogy and prospects for further research in the area.

After Rachel E. Burke briefly introduces the essays presented with a focus on our contemporary relationship to modern subjectivity, Mieke Bal will make the case for the sense of presentness on an affective and sensuous level in Munch’s paintings and Flaubert’s writing by selecting a few topics and cases from the book Emma and Edvard Looking Sideways: Loneliness and the Cinematic, published by the Munch Museum in conjunction with the exhibition Emma & Edvard. It is this foregrounded presentness that not only produces the ongoing thematic relevance of these works, but more importantly, the sense-based conceptualism that declares art and life tightly bound together. If neither artist eliminated figuration in favour of abstraction, they had a good reason for that. Art is not a representation of life, but belongs to it, illuminates it and helps us cope with it by sharpening our senses. As an example, a few paintings will clarify what I mean by the noun-qualifier “cinematic” and how that aesthetic explains the production of loneliness.

This article analyzes the shift from emotion to affect in Caryl Churchill’s writing for the theatre, a process which becomes prominent in the later seventies and culminates in the production of A Mouthful of Birds, a project designed jointly with the choreographer David Lan. The effects of the transformation remain traceable in The Skriker, a complex play taking several years to complete. It is argued that there is a tangible and logical correlation between Churchill’s dismantling of the representational apparatus associated with the tradition of institutional theatre - a process which involves, primarily, a dissolution of its artificially constructed, docile bodies into orificial ones - and her withdrawal from the use of emotional expression in favour of the affective. In the following examination, emotions are conceived as interpretative acts modelled on cognition and mediated through representations while the intensity of affect remains unstructured. Often revealed through violence, pain and suffering, affect enables the theatre to venture into the pre-cognitive and thus beyond the tradition of liberal subject formation.

Artykuł jest recenzją książki Sebastiana Jagielskiego Przerwane emancypacje. Polityka ekscesu w polskim kinie 1968-1982 (2022).
The article is a review of Sebastian Jagielski’s book Przerwane emancypacje. Polityka ekscesu w polskim kinie 1968-1982 [Interrupted Emancipations: Politics of Excess in Polish Cinema 1968-1982] (2022). The book presents several films that were made between the Polish March 1968 political crisis and the introduction of the martial law in 1981, depicting them within a detailed institutional and socio-political landscape. The films share the trait of formal as well as thematic excess, which is regarded by the author, e.g. through his reference to queer theory, as a symptom of the ultimate futility of the countercultural progressive agenda, suppressed by the conservative revolution of the early 1980s. This symptom, however, enables the author to weave a minoritarian narrative about the Polish culture which stands in stark contrast to the dominant nationalist-catholic memory.

The article presents two studies based on the assumption that the effectiveness of cognitive control depends on the subject’s type of emotional state. Inhibitory control is taken into account, as the basic determinant of the antisaccade reactions and the emotional Stroop effect. The studies deal with differentiation of emotions on the basis of their origin: automatic (due to primary affective reactions) vs. refl ective (due to deliberative evaluation). According to the main assumption, automatic emotions are diffusive, and decrease the effectiveness of cognitive control. The hypothesis predicted that performance level of both the Antisaccade Task and the Emotional Stroop Test would be lower in the automaticemotion eliciting condition than in the refl ective-emotion eliciting condition. In two experimental studies, positive and negative (automatic vs. refl ective) emotions were elicited. The results support the predictions, regardless of the valence of emotions.

Alcoholism, which is a major public health and social problem, can be viewed from several perspectives, as its occurrence is a multifaceted phenomenon in terms of its development (causes), effects, and maintenance. The Relational Family Therapy paradigm looks at alcoholism and its dynamics in relation to dysfunctional affect regulation. Dysfunctional affect regulation and the general inability to manage emotions are often mentioned in relation to the development and maintenance of alcohol addiction. The mechanism of affect regulation generally refers to internal processes that allow an individual to maintain their emotions to a degree that feels still bearable for them. According to these assumptions, alcoholics drink in order to cope with difficult emotions, either because they have more negative emotional states than others do, or because they lack the internal resources to cope with these negative emotions. For them, consuming alcohol is a series of repeated attempts to regulate heavy emotions, which often stem from painful past experiences. The process of Relational Family Therapy, therefore, as treatment of addiction, focuses on identifying and transforming the dysfunctional regulation of affect, which is behind addictive behavior. By means of action research methodology, this paper presents the approach of Relational Family Therapy in working with an alcoholic client, with an emphasis on the aspects of affect regulation. We show how the client’s alcohol use appeared as a dynamic of inappropriate regulation of a painful core affect. In the process of Relational Family Therapy, a more functional regulation of the core affect was established, thereby reducing symptomatic behavior (alcoholism) in the client.

Copyright (2001) was interpreted as a story about childhood and adolescence, presenting both experiences of a maturing protagonist as well as the Polish reality of the last two decades of the 20th century. Coming to terms with his own childhood and a search for the language to express his own „self” determines the narration of the book. However, this rhythm of narration is disturbed by objects of disgust that the stories teem with. As a result, the author would like to suggest interpreting the collection of stories by Witkowski from an affective perspective. By analysing the diffrent texts, the author explains what role disgust and its objects play in the collection. It is argued that despite its negative properties disgust may be a necessary condition of self-fulfilment and a source of affective cognition. This happens among others thanks to becoming aware of childhood feelings the main character experienced when confronted with the disgusting people and objects.

The article analyzes the ballad Czaty by Adam Mickiewicz, which has so far received little critical attention. If it was discussed, though, the reason was merely its experimental verse form of the anapaest and the work’s stylistic merit. Aiming to re-interpret Mickiewicz’s poem, the author of the article concentrates on the narratorial voice and the connections between the literary characters (the voivode, his young wife, the lover, and the voivode’s Cossack servant—Nauman). She also underscores the driving force behind the unfolding events. The reading reveals that the characters act upon sudden affective reactions which they can hardly control.

Recent literature reported that judgments of semantic coherence are influenced by a positive affective response due to increased fluency of processing. The presented paper investigates whether fluency of processing can be modified by affective responses to the coherent stimuli as well as an automaticity of processes involved in semantic coherence judgments. The studies employed the dyads of triads task in which participants are shown two word triads and asked to solve a semantically coherent one or indicate which of the two is semantically coherent. Across two studies in a dualtask paradigm we show that a) attentional resources moderate insight into semantically coherent word triads, whereas b) judgments of semantic coherence judgments are independent of attentional resources. We discuss implications of our findings for how people might form intuitive judgments of semantic coherence.

The aim of the study was to verify hypotheses about time changeability of dream characteristics depending on the participants’ age and affective value of the dream. The study was conducted online. Participants of the study were 68 individuals between the age of 17 and 85. The participants were asked to prepare detailed descriptions of their dreams, next they had to identify elements of the dreams, refer them to their real life, and assess their affective value. In the dreams of late adolescents, and young and middle-aged adults the most frequently recalled period in a positive context turned out to be late adolescence and early adulthood, whereas in a negative context the participants would recall their present developmental phase and the period of late childhood. Unpleasant dreams of older individuals were mainly connected with the period of middle adulthood, whereas those pleasant ones referred to various periods of their entire life.

This article reports findings from a program of research on the systematic influence of implicitly perceived facial expressions of emotions on effort mobilization in cognitive tasks. Recently published research on the implicit-affect-primes-effort (IAPE) model (Gendolla, 2012) has revealed replicated evidence for this effect: implicitly perceived facial expressions of sadness, anger, fear, and happiness influence effort-related cardiac response during cognitive performance. In further support of the IAPE model, those studies revealed that the effects of implicitly processed emotional expressions on effort mobilization differ systematically: Implicit fear and sadness expressions that are processed online during task performance render tasks subjectively more difficult, resulting in relatively high effort. Implicit happiness and anger expressions have the opposite effect. Moreover, objective task difficulty and incentive moderated the effect of implicit affect, and especially controlled processing of affect primes turned out to be a boundary condition.

The main focus of the paper is the role of listeners’ emotion-relevant characteristics and musical expertise in the granularity of affective responses to music. Another objective of the study is to test the consistency of the granularity of affect that is perceived in music and/or experienced in response to it. In Experiment 1, 91 musicians and nonmusicians listened to musical excerpts and grouped them according to the similarity of the affects they experienced while listening. Finer grouping granularity was found in musicians and high rumination scorers. Male musicians with above-median scores in rumination produced a larger number of clusters than the other male participants. Experiment 2 that engaged 23 participants demonstrated moderate consistency with which listeners grouped affects that they perceived in music and affects they experienced while listening to music. The study suggests that affective responses to music are subject to individual differences in musical expertise and rumination. Affects perceived in music and felt in response to it seem to be categorized with reference to the common principles. However, the cues that are used in such instances of categorization seem to be different. The paper encourages further research on the importance of listeners’ personal characteristics for the affective responses to music.

We also reflect on the interaction between co-text and context in the construction of the meaning of a ‘pragmatème’ of affect. We observe the influence of the elements of textual nature namely the co-text and the environment of the context on the meaning of a ‘pragmatèmes’.

Cheerleading is a new sport, practiced in 110 nations; since 2016 enjoys provisional Olympic status. Its leaders claim that it is a “happy” sport, but research on its psychological effects is lacking. In this field-study we examined core-affect, positive-affect, and negative-affect in 65 cheerleaders before, during, after, and one-hour after a cheerleading training. Core-affect was more positive during and immediately after training, but it tapered off one hour following the training when feeling states were still more positive than at baseline. Negative-affect declined linearly from baseline to one-hour following training when it became significantly lower than its previous values. Positive-affect showed quadratic dynamics, in parallel with arousal, being higher during and immediately after training than during baseline, or one-hour after training. These results demonstrate for the first time that cheerleading is a “happy” sport, which apart from the skill-development also yields positive psychological emotions both during and after training.

The main aim of this paper is to identify patterns in the communication of irony in political discourse, and to determine the role of negative emotions in conveying ironic meaning. The first point to be considered is how politicians use irony, which communicates a contextually incongruent meaning. To be specific, the author’s aim is to investigate what mechanisms of negative politeness are communicated by irony. The second issue to be analysed is the role of negative affect and irony in political discourse. Consequently, the author’s aim is to investigate whether such an interface is socially acceptable and justified in parliamentary discourse. The empirical part of the research seeks to probe the language-affect interface in human interaction. The qualitative and quantitative elements of the analysis lead to results that corroborate the findings relating to the Tinge Hypothesis of Shelley Dews and Ellen Winner (1995: 3), which underscore that irony mutes negative emotions. The paper also takes the perspective of linguistic pragmatics and sociology to highlight the individual factors which play a crucial role in communicating irony. These include face-threatening acts (henceforth: FTAs), role-taking, and negative emotions (evaluations). Another aspect to be considered is the role of the speaker in producing ironic meaning. The author expounds upon the patterns of communication among politicians who share affect-imbued ironic meanings.

There is growing evidence that people may not remember pain accurately. Some studies have shown that recalled chronic, acute, and experimental pain is exaggerated. However, a few studies have demonstrated that recalled acute and experimental pain may be underestimated. Additional data shows that past chronic, acute, and experimental pain may be remembered accurately. Previous studies have found that many factors may influence the memory for pain, including the mean pain intensity that is experienced, the peak and the end of pain, the length of delay between the pain experience and its recall, and current pain during pain recall. Psychological factors that may be related to the memory for pain include pain expectations, negative affect, state and trait anxiety, distress, and pain catastrophizing. This article summarizes the results of a series of studies conducted by the Pain Research Group from the Institute of Psychology of the Jagiellonian University aimed to answer the question why previous findings are so diverse and to identify factors influencing the memory of pain. The most important and novel results of these studies include the finding that memory of pain is influenced by the meaning and affective value of the pain experience together with the finding showing that the memory of pain is influenced not only by negative affect, but also by positive affect. These results may have important implications for both clinical research and clinical practice.   The article is part of a research project no. 2016/23/B/HS6/03890 funded by the National Science Centre, Poland.

This article deals with the issue of the articulation of pain in Leo Lipski’s Piotruś [Little Peter]. In Lipski’s novel suffering is rarely direct, but is rather a sensation evoked by another’s perception (the oppressive gaze), cultural exclusion of disabled bodies and the dramatic experience of the disintegration of reality and language itself (as the medium of interpersonal communication and understanding). On this background the author presents the palliative conceptualization of literature (revealing itself in Lipski’s micro-novel), in which the emphasis is not exactly on the possibility of essential (re)presentation of pain, but on the relieving potential of the textual transposition (translation) of sensations and feelings.

Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie współistnienia dwóch zjawisk w dramacie II połowy XIX wieku i przełomu XIX i XX wieku.
The article discusses the coexistence of two phenomena in the drama of the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. By combining affect and convention, the author seeks to point out the dramatic use of the forgotten plot schemes, characters, and construction solutions, which still remain strongly preserved in the cultural memory of the viewers. These were highly characteristic of the comedy dell'arte, the Russian  balagan, which was at the time regaining its popularity in Italy, as well as of the Polish fairy tale. The authors used them in order to evoke in the viewer a certain kind of affectation. This, in turn, allowed them to build ties with the audience based on completely new rules of participation, which gave rise to the theatrical phenomena characteristic of the second half of the 20th century.

Opis:
The paper delineates a study of executive functions (EFs), construed as procedural working memory (WM), from a motivational perspective. Since WM theories and motivation theories are both concerned with purposive activity, the role of implicit evaluations (affects) observed in goal pursuit can be anticipated to arise also in the context of cognitive control, e.g., during the performance of the Stroop task. The role of positive and negative affect in goal pursuit consists in controlling attention resources according to the goal and situational requirements. Positive affect serves to maintain goals and means in the scope of attention (EF1), whereas negative affect activates the inhibition of non-functional contents, e.g., distractors and irrelevant objects (resulting in attention disengagement; EF2). Adaptation to conflict proceeds via sequential triggering of negative and positive affect (EF3). Moreover, it was demonstrated that the focus on action or reflection changes the scope of contents subjected to implicit (affective) control. Therefore, I suggest that the motivational system, to a large extent, plays the role of the Central Executive. The paper opens a discussion and proposes studies on affective mechanisms of cognitive control.

The purpose of the research was to test for the impact of a series of Skype exchange activities with students in Australia on Japanese elementary school students’ affective variables toward EFL. The results show that the students had statistically significant increases in foreign language activities, international posture, and motivation. This tech-based language activity arguably supplied compelling comprehensible input. The student participation in the preparations leading up to the exchanges would have encouraged them to work diligently to be able to speak so as to be understood. The results are discussed regarding future directions in this line of research.

Affective management is a new concept which suggests that top managers should take stakeholders’ affective experiences into account when making their management decisions. To show that this concept could contribute to the improvement of management performance in organizations, this study investigated the correlations between the affectiveness of top management and management performance indices. Our questionnaire based on the Affective Management Scorecard was employed to assess top managers’ recognition of the importance, as well as the actual practices of affective management. Top managers from 43 Thai organizations participated in the study. A correlation analysis was conducted to observe whether affective management indices would correlate with management performance indices, such as return on equity, return on assets, price to earnings ratio, and price to book value ratio. The findings showed that the results for organizations practicing affective management were positively correlated with their management performance in both profitability and good perceptions by investors.

Are emotions internal episodes – psychical or neurological – as is often claimed? Some certainly are; but I maintain that an important class of emotions are “peripheral”; by this I mean that they consist in what we pick up from others’ expressions of their emotions in words, gestures, or actions – or from surrounding circumstances of various sorts. These expressions and circumstances contain affect clusters that manifest themselves to us exophanously, literally “showings-forth.” I explore both of these basic situations of “the transmission of affect” (Brennan). I also present an abbreviated periphenomenological description of various ways in which emotions have their own peculiar edges, thereby correcting and supplementing the common conception that edges inhere only in physical objects.

A train named disappointment. The affective program of the novels Liebeserklärung by Micheal Lentz and Trociny by Krzysztof Varga. The article is an attempt to explore the problem of emotional suffering in two contemporary novels, which are told from a male perspective. In Liebeserklärung by Michael Lentz and Trociny by Krzysztof Varga, the staging of the disappointed love goes hand in hand with a train journey. As it were a train named disappointment, the protagonists reflect upon their unhappy love, which leads to an affective program of anger, hatred and disgust. The subject of the analysis is not least the affective poetics of the two novels on crisis, love and men, which can be compared considering their search for a language of disappointed love.

In the center of our interest is the use of emotion-marked linguistic resources in the public discourse, and more specifically in the Croatian political public sphere. As politics is traditionally considered a place from chich emotions should be expelled and where rationality is that characteristic which comes first in state administration, the question is where do political statements draw their emotional value and what is its role, i.e. if it occurs by accident or it is based on the speaker’s intention. In this paper, we will try to answer those questions, taking into account previous reflections on emotions.

Research indicates that emotions are predictive of sports performance. The application of emotion research to practice is that intervention strategies can be used to change emotions to enhance performance. The present study examined emotional profi les associated with successful performance. A review of studies indicate that there are general trends, that is, high activation emotions such as excitement and vigor tend to associate with good performance and low activation unpleasant emotions such as depression and dejection tend to associate with poor performance. Studies show mixed results for high activation unpleasant emotions (anger and anxiety). Athletes like to feel emotions that can be functional, and so some athletes will seek to increase or sustain relatively high levels of anger or anxiety if they believe they are helpful for performance. It is proposed that practitioners identify individual emotion-performance relationships and examine underlying beliefs associated with each emotion.

Several studies (Keysar et al., 2012; Lazar et al., 2014) suggest that decisions made in a foreign language are more rational. The authors imply that when thinking in a language which is not our native tongue, analytical, slow, deep-thinking is activated. The question that underlies the present article is whether this is a characteristic of every mental operation in the foreign medium. Studies carried out by Costa et al. (2014), Geipel et al. (2015) and Hadjichristidis et al. (2015) suggest the issue is much more complex than it may seem. The answer to the question above was sought through a study in which 84 Polish advanced users of English as a foreign language were asked to solve mathematical problems from the Cognitive Reflection Test (Frederick, 2005). Initially the subjects were randomly assigned to two groups, who subsequently solved the problems in Polish (native tongue) and in English (foreign language). The article presents the results, discusses them and arrives at a number of conclusions as well as implications for further research.

The purpose of this paper is a multidimensional analysis of the problem of power in the film Matnia by Roman Polański. Using the ups and downs of three heroes as a starting point of the deliberations, the author proves that the effectiveness of power is not only in physical strength and the will to dominate but rather in the readiness to be subordinated. This readiness is generated in the heroes by such factors as vast and unprotected space of the castle, making of one of the main heroes – George – a female character, the failure of the institution of marriage (evidence of George’s wife’s unfaithfulness appears in the film), the powerlessness of language, which makes opposing the oppressor difficult, and finally omnipotence of the affect understood as a key to the interpretation of postmodern power structures.

Violence Hates Games? Revolting (against) Violence  in Michael Haneke’s Funny Games U.S. Abstract: This article aims at exploring Haneke’s Funny Games U.S. as a protest against violence employed in the mainstream cinema. Satisfying compensatory needs of the spectators, constructing their identities, and even contributing to the biopolitics of neoliberalism, proliferating bloodthirsty fantasies put scholars in a suspicious position of treating them as either purely aesthetical phenomena or exclusively ethical ones. Haneke’s film seems to resist such a clear-cut binary; what is more, it contributes immensely to the criticism of mainstream cinematic violence. Misleading with its initial setting of a conventional thriller, Haneke employs absurd brutality in order to overload violence itself. The scenes of ruthless tortures are entangled in the ongoing masquerade, during which swapping roles, theatrical gestures, and temporary identities destabilize seemingly fixed positions of perpetrators and their victims, and tamper with the motives behind the carnage. As I would argue, by confronting its spectators with unbearable cruelty devoid of closing catharsis, Funny Games deconstructs their bloodthirsty desire of retaliation and unmasks them as the very reason for the violence on screen. Following, among others, Jean-Luc Nancy and Henry A. Giroux, I would like to demonstrate how Haneke exhausts the norm of acceptable violence to reinstate such a limit anew.

Madness is depicted here as a phenomenon defying any kind of unambiguity; it can be anything from a secret of nature to be deciphered, through a creative frenzy of inspiration, to a state of apathy, sometimes interwoven with sudden ecstasy, triggered by the chronic hunger that Żeromski suffered as a young man, in other words: during his diarist period.

In one of his latest articles, Fortus (2014), points out that “when one considers the centrality of affect to teaching and learning and the broad range of topics that are related to affect, it is concerning that it has received relatively so little attention” (Fortus 2014, p. 821). In order to support his position, he provides an overview of the research on affect in science education that has been published in several journals (JRST, SciEd, and IJSE) between 2001 and 2011. The author also hypothesizes why affect has been under-attended to by the science education research community so far. And the conclusion he arrives at is that affect remains in the shadow of researchers’ attention partly due to the existing “international trend towards standardization of schooling and high-stakes testing” (p. 822). The main purpose of this article is to emphasize that affect does play an important role also in learning mathematics and for this reason it should be considered as one of the core dimensions of mathematics education. The first part of this article provides examples of two phenomena: math anxiety and the underachievement syndrome in learning mathematics, where affective determinants are unquestionable. Subsequently, we shift the focus from these particular issues to the general description of what affect is, what meaningful concepts it contributes in the field of research on mathematics education, and how the research community can benefit from the approach it promotes. Finally, we present some new directions for researchers and teachers that may result in an increase of the quality and efficiency of both teaching and learning mathematics.

The article analyses the media coverage of the accusations of sexual harassment and mobbing made against Henryk Jacek S., a long-time director of the Bagatela Theatre in Krakow, by its female employees. Based on the employees’ statements, the author tries to describe the situation in the theatre before the case was exposed. She refers to the category of ‘ugly feelings’, created and explored by Sianne Ngai, and specifically, to the affect of animatedness, which is characterised by particularly limited agency and the blurring of the boundary between the inside and the outside. The moment when the female employees broke the silence is associated by the author with the affect of disgust (as defined by Sara Ahmed) and the related revulsion and nausea. She also examines how this affective dynamic has influenced the women’s agency and effectiveness in relation to the recipients of their public appearances.

This paper describes how hacking can be the act of redefining what is seen and not seen in the context of online surveillance. Based on a qualitative interview study with 22 hackers, it discusses the many practices and purposes of ‘hacking online surveillance’, with a specific focus on the techniques of disappearing from view while continuing to be online. Not only do these techniques vary in style and the expertise involved, but they all fulfill multiple functions. They are more than just a coded statement against the uneven powers of surveillance, they are tactics of the everyday life, moments of analytical creativity and reflection, instances of pleasure and play, affective encounters, identity work and forms of communication. The paper dedicates space to these sometimes overlapping and sometimes differing conceptualizations of ‘hacking online surveillance’ by using methodologies that consciously seek out the nonlinear and the multiple.

The paper presents the results of a systematic review of 61 empirical studies in which emotions in response to music were measured. The analysis of each study was focused on the measurement of emotion components and the conceptualization of emotion both in hypothesis and discussion. The review does not support the claim that music evokes the same emotional reactions as life events do, especially modal emotions. Notably, neither a high intensity of feelings, nor intentionality were confirmed in relation to musical experiences, the emergence of specific action tendencies, or specific physiological changes. Based on the obtained results, it is recommended to use the terms “affect” or “music emotions” with reference to emotions experienced in reaction to music and to abandon the term “emotions” as misleading.

The aim of the study was to explore heterogeneity of change in state affect following the introduction of insulin therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes. State affect was assessed twice among 305 patients: just before the introduction of insulin therapy and at 1-month follow-up. Latent class growth modeling showed that negative affect (NA) increased in 78% of the sample, whereas positive affect (PA) improved in only 17% of the participants. On the basis of cross-tabulation of these changes a 4-class model of emotional response to the new treatment was obtained. The largest subgroup of participants (57%) manifested “threat response”, i.e. moderate-stable PA with increase in NA. Participants in the “challenge response” subgroup (11.8%) showed increases in both NA and PA. The third class (10.2%) characterized by “no response”, had low-stable NA and moderate-stable PA. The smallest “stress response” subgroup (9.8%) showed increase in NA and high-stable PA. Gender, age and education level were significant covariates of group membership. Thus, the findings revealed heterogeneous emotional response to the new treatment, which may be of clinical relevance for improving diabetic patients’ adjustment through a more individual, person-centered approach.

These two theories help explain some expected but slightly distressing zones in the enclosed texts. It seems that all these texts embrace inconspicuously the fear of the present and of the future. In their very well researched articles, dealing with various aspects of contemporary times, like jihadism, terrorism, the nature of Russian soul, the presence of the post Socialist ideology in Eastern Europe, kitsch, morality in the world of simulacra, the world of Barack Obama and the presence/absence of Jesus in pop-culture, the authors carefully explore their topics within the general theme of the volume, Social Unrest in History. Analyses, interpretations and representations in literature and visual arts. The author of this essay concludes her article with an argument that the area of affect should be paid closer attention than ever when analyzing the above topics today.

The article analyzes Olga Lavrenteva’s graphic novel Survilo, which echoes the terror, especially the Stalinist repression and the blockade of Leningrad. Lavrenteva is a graphic artist, author of comic books, representative of the third generation, who presents the story of her grandmother, Valentina Survilo, and her relatives in an unconventional form. Translated into the language of comic books, this family story focuses on the fate of many inhabitants of the Soviet Union. At the same time, as if on the sidelines, Lavrenteva raises an important issue – the coexistence of memory and affect, which is the result of long-term silence. Survilo is not only a record of the past but also of the emotional states of her grandmother, the paralyzing fear that accompanied her, i.e. the physical and psychological costs that the survivors had to bear. Lavrenteva’s graphic novel successfully fits into the new practices of commemoration and witnessing, which are still a novelty in Russia, carrying a great potential for critical revision of the dark past, and – above all – for building a community of memory based on the foundations of intergenerational dialogue.

Abstract: In the first part of the paper the author briefly revisits two of the most important traditions that stand behind the contemporary conceptualizations of affect: the Deleuzian tradition and the Lacanian one. Having pointed to the most important features of the two lines of thinking affect, as well as to certain difficulties that arise within them, the author proceeds to offer his own simple conceptual model that would be operative in thinking about film experience. The model involves feeling, emotion and affect as three distinct phenomena; the concept of “ex-spectator” is introduced in order to account for the crucial difference between emotion and affect. In the second part of the paper, the model is tested against the later films by Quentin Tarantino. The films are presented as “affective”: by skilfully operating with “reflective images” they are able to deconstruct the subject of the ex-spectator into the split-but-real, affected self of the true spectator.

The article explores multi-dimensional sensitivity to the void as a major feature of Bolesław Leśmian’s poetry. The author distinguishes those stylistic devices which extract, on the level of language, the the feeling of non-fullness, absence, or nonexistence in Leśmian’s poems. Apophatic language translates itself into the issue of nonexistence seen as meaningful lack. The article focuses not so much on the category of the negation of existence as on independent, fixed, affective type of experience. The author inquires what happens with the poetic voice confronted with the Other in a situation experiencing pain resulting from lack. Empathetic co-feeling of “I” with the other turns out to be the most important state. The moment someone else’s pain is discovered, feelings change into the affective state which cannot be either realized or described. The I-Other-void confrontation brings about an affect. The empathetic “I” meets the Other who experiences various kinds of absence. The Other’s feelings become recognized and even, to some extent, defined by the person who speaks in the text but the affect happens afterwards. The emphatic confrontation and co-feeling destruct the coherent voice and the text itself for it causes that kind of unspeakable experience that cannot be realized, expressed or represented. This is an experience not-to-be-named.

Building on the work of chicana theorist Gloria Anzaldúa and queer theorist José Esteban Muñoz this paper analyses and discusses the affective component of language for those whose first language has been overshadowed by a second language. I ask how language affects the self’s sense of identity/belonging, the possibility for communicating/accessing queerness, and what linguistic or poetic tools can be employed to empower the self. Following the tradition of feminist thought that assumes that the personal is political, I write from personal experiences. As a Colombian-born migrant in Sweden, I explore how the overshadowing of my mother tongue (Spanish) by Swedish (as the language with the perceived highest social and cultural value in Swedish society) has impacted on my self-image, sense of identity, self-worth and queerness. Gloria Anzaldúa inspires me to mix languages and push the boundaries of the academic text format. Confronting it with a poetic, violent and desbordado language, I challenge normative ideas of academic writing, but I also hope that others might find beauty in the decisive ambiguity and the mixing of languages. I engage with what Gloria Anzaldúa (2012, 1984) and Cherrie Moraga (1984) call theorizing from the flesh and turn to concepts such as linguistic terrorism, while also approaching José Esteban Muñoz’s brown feelings (2020). Furthermore, I build on Torres (2017) who argues that the emotional bonds bilinguals have to different languages intersect with their sense of identity and place, thus evoking various emotions and memories. From here, I conclude that having one’s first language be overshadowed by a second one creates ambiguity and confusion about the self’s identity. Feeling homeless in language translates into an uncertainty about one’s claim to any citizenship or cultural identity, thus leading to anxiety, sadness and sense of non-belonging. I contrast this with the concept of disidentification (Muñoz 1999), which opens practices of survival through entering queer temporality and embracing ambiguity. Accordingly, the confusion about a defined identity (going along with a particular language) can become useful for negotiating the self’s queerness. For Muñoz, neither opting for assimilation nor counteridentification, but disidentifying allows the self to (re)construct a sense of identity and belonging.

It discusses how grown-ups – supposedly aware of how important speech is for their language success – prove victim to affective obstacles, require the personally – and emotionally-experienced sense of achievement, which implies that the character of their language learning does not depart too far from that of young children. The paper opens with a section concerning the (Polish) national edge of the learning of English and focusing on the learners’ decision not to speak having a personal and crucial character. Then, the issue of affective obstacles is examined theoretically in a discussion on the suitability of specific early education terms for adult language education, and empirically – through a qualitative study of what effect is obtained among Polish grown-ups by using a language teaching method resting on L2 early education terms. It is observed that following a simple teaching procedure in which learners were presented with a set of topic-oriented questions and exemplary answers and then requested to remark (in Polish) on (a four-faceted construct reflecting) how they feel about their productive language learning, an immediate positive outcome is obtained on the affective stratum.

The aim of this article is to present art & science projects involving electroencephalography (EEG), and study them in terms of relationships between artistic narratives and medical procedures. Discussed are the works by pioneers of EEG applications in art (David Rosenboom, Alvin Lucier) and by contemporary artists (Lisa Park, Amy Karle), who are mainly interested in performances and relational installations. The author of the text analyses the projects with reference to the concept she introduces – biomediation (derived from Eugene Thacker’s theory of biomedia and a concept of mediation developed by Joanna Zylinska and Sarah Kember), pointing to the post- and transhumanist strategies used by the artists. She ponders on the extent to which the parameterisation and processing of bioelectric work of human brain may serve as a tool to expand the capacity of the human body-mind and thus create connections with ‘non-human’ constructs.

Families of children with chronic illness experience persistent stress. Facing the diagnosis and learning how to cope with it is a stressful experience not only for the child but also for the parents and for the whole family. The illness, with its unpredictability and treatment, disturbs their daily routine and threatens the whole family system. Parental involvement in the child’s disease management and their emotional support are crucial for effective coping and adaptation to the child’s chronic illness. The aim of this article is to present the importance of the parental role in these families through theoretical findings of the relational family model.

Opis:
Late-career entrepreneurship can be a good answer to the problems of an aging population—age discrimination experienced by mature workers or inadequate pensions. For this reason, it is gaining increasing interest among researchers and policymakers. However, to date, very little is known about the factors that favor or hinder intentions to become entrepreneur at the late-career stage, especially those taking a psychological perspective. The current study aims to fill this gap by testing whether dispositional affect is related to entrepreneurial intention at the late-career stage. To explain the mechanism of this relationship, we use the theory of planned behavior. We conducted a study that included 292 non-self-employed people aged 45–81. The results showed that neither positive affect nor negative affect are directly related to entrepreneurial intention, but these relationships are rather indirect and go through components of the theory of planned behavior. This provides insights into explanation of late-career entrepreneurial intention and can be used by researchers, policymakers and practitioners, for example in programs supporting business start-ups by people approaching retirement age.

High cost of mental health problems to societies requires searching for factors that may have salutary effect on psychological health. Forgiveness might be one of such variables. Although empirical studies of forgiveness and mental health have been increasingly undertaken, there is a deficiency in examining the connections in clinical samples. The aim of the present research was to explore the relationships between multidimensional disposition to forgive and mental health variables, such as positive and negative affect and satisfaction with life, among outpatient psychotherapy participants in comparison to untreated individuals. The study included 137 respondents,68 of whom were outpatients and 69 the controls. The Heartland Forgiveness Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule and the Satisfaction with Life Scale were used. The results showed no differences in forgiveness between the treatment and control group but revealed poorer mental health (lower positive affect and satisfaction with life, and higher negative affect) in outpatients. In the outpatients sample, positive associations between forgiveness and affect and life satisfaction were significantly stronger than in the controls. The findings suggest that treated individuals have more to gain through forgiveness than untreated ones.
Pozytywne związki między przebaczeniem a afektem i satysfakcją z życia były istotnie silniejsze u osób biorących udział w terapii niż w populacji ogólnej. Uzyskane rezultaty sugerują, że osoby z grupy klinicznej mogą poprzez przebaczenie uzyskać więcej w zakresie zdrowia psychologicznego niż osoby z grupy nieklinicznej.

Although anger as a negative emotion is associated with unpleasantness, recent research on anger highlights its motivational effect. The present study tested whether individuals experience both, an unpleasant and an activating affect, after real-life provocations. Results revealed that an anger situation evoked not only typical subjective and cardiovascular anger reactions but also a sense of strength, which is a positive affect. A comparison of participants with low versus high anger disposition according to the STAXI-2 at baseline, treatment, and recovery showed that participants with high trait anger consistently scored higher in subjective ratings of feeling strong than their counterparts did. Moreover, we found a larger and longer lasting effect of feeling strong than feeling angry after an anger treatment. Thus, differences in anger disposition infl uence the positive correlation between trait anger and positive affect.

Four types of self-standards (ideal, ought, undesired, and forbidden selves) were analyzed in the context of self-assessed health of older adults. We focused on the relationships between self-discrepancies (perceived actualization of self-standards) and affect, as well as the content of self-descriptions of standards. Participants (116 Polish older adults) completed: Self Standards’ Measure (SSM), PANAS-X and 7 items from the WHOQOL-BREF. First, we found that self-assessed health moderates the effects of self-discrepancies on affect. The ideal and ought self-discrepancies predicted affect when health was assessed as good. Conversely, the undesired and forbidden self-discrepancies predicted affect when health was assessed as poor. Second, health-related content was more typical for the ideal than for the ought standards. Third, older adults who assessed their health better had fewer health-related standards. The results are discussed with reference to control theory of approach and avoidance.

The digital revolution is impacting enormously on the way we create and undertake business. To keep pace and navigate the complexities of this incessant evolving state requires entrepreneurial thinking capable of moving us from the old to the new. An often-overlooked aspect of this transition or change process is the space that lies between the old and the new, a betwixt and between state, fuelled by opportunity, but clouded in uncertainty and ambiguity. In this article, we stress the significance of this between space and discuss the importance of liminal thinking as pivotal in navigating the passage from old to new. We do this by drawing on the concepts of liminal space and liminal thinking, illustrating how these concepts can be deployed to reconstruct reality in such a way that stimulates the crucial cognitive recalibrations needed to cross the passage from old to new. To know that this ‘betwixt and between’ space exists, to recognise the qualities of this space and, most importantly, to manage it, is invaluable in entrepreneurs’ dynamic, rapidly changing world.

Opis:
Starting with Richard Hamilton’s famous collage and W.H. Auden’s poetic rendition of the history of cities, we argue that what the Greeks called polemos has been the very element of urbanity. The conflict could imply tensions between the rich and the poor, aristocrats or the hoi polloi, but we have reached the stage at which such a rigorously dichotomic vision of the conflict does not provide one with an appropriate approach towards the phenomenon of urbanity. The model of binary oppositions should be supplanted by a much more diverse scheme which would allow for the integration of such elements as affects, desires, and dreams, the factors which do not readily succumb to dialectical analysis. Hence, following Deleuze, Merrifield, and Debord, we want to see the city as an intricate structure of many-layered elements, both physical and imagined

The focus of the article is on the questions and issues that have arisen in research on communication in second language contexts, as well as possibilities of addressing them that open up when one moves to the understanding of scientific inquiry as “a form of anti-disciplinary or transgressive knowledge, as a way of thinking and doing that is always problematizing” (Pennycook 2007: 37). The article aims to point to some issues in research on communication in a FL classroom where a transdisciplinary approach might prove useful or even necessary to address them. An expanded analysis of a classroom discussion carried out within Hymes’ model that includes different modes and forms of communication as well as aspects of on-goingly changing contexts should illustrate the benefits of applying a transdisciplinary approach in research on communication  in a second language classroom.

Artykuł jest recenzją pracy Marty Stańczyk pt. Czas w kinie.
The article is a review of the book Czas w kinie. Doświadczenie temporalne w “slow cinema” [Time in Cinema: Temporal Experience in “Slow Cinema”] (2019) by Marta Stańczyk. The reviewer presents the structure of the book and discusses its content in detail. She appreciates Stańczyk’s creative potential, but also argues with some of her assumptions. The review begins with the words by Theodor W. Adorno, who once defined film as a radical medium of the culture industry. The reviewer claims that one of the main purposes of Stańczyk’s book is to contradict this view and to point out the uniqueness of slow cinema against (not only) the contemporary film production, since films representing slow cinema are in fact not so much stories to watch but states to experience. Typical for those states are some affective reactions (for example an “ennobling” boredom) induced by time. Time itself is, in Stańczyk’s view, one of the most important parameters of the cinematic experience in the case of slow cinema, and hence its fundamental artistic concept.

This study looked at the impact of the integration of contemplative practices on foreign language anxiety, positive and negative affect, self-efficacy, classroom climate, and language learning in students enrolled in an advanced intermediate Spanish language course in the USA. Data included pre- and post-test surveys, exam scores to measure learning outcomes, student interviews, and course evaluations. In the contemplative group, students engaged in brief 10-minute contemplative practices once a week, while the non-contemplative group followed the same syllabus but was not exposed to contemplative practices. Analysis of the data showed no significant differences in foreign language anxiety, self-efficacy or affect between the non-contemplative and contemplative groups at post-test but significantly higher scores on classroom climate measures in the contemplative group. Significantly higher grades were found on course exams for students in the contemplative group. Analysis of the pre-/post-survey data revealed a significant decrease in foreign language anxiety in both groups over the semester but not for affect or self-efficacy. This study extends the existing research on contemplative practices to a new context-affect and learning in foreign language courses.

According to the author, this change can be made thanks to the external media. The websites such as Facebook and YouTube, allow a symbolic transformation of a status of non-places, their rearrangement. In the study the author also proposes to expand Augé’s dictionary to include a category of analgetic places and non-places of affect.

The article presents the forms of repetition in the creation and reception of Tadeusz Kantor’s performances. Krakow cellars, Kantor’s home in Wielopole and school class in Bielkowo near Łazy in Pomerania connect here the topic of affective searching and finding sources of identity and memory. The process may refer to both the artist and the viewer, seeking in the memory, art and landscape the traces of himself, recorded in the past and projected onto the surroundings. The author’s discovery of the interiors of the cellars under the floor of the house in Wielopole, similar to the Krzysztofory cellars in Krakow where Kantor conducted the rehearsals of the famous The Dead Class, leads to the conclusion that the preexisting in Wielopole under the floor of a childhood room the space of Kantor’s play can be the source of director’s affective repetition. With the use of the repetition mechanism, numerous further artistic discoveries and meetings of the artist with the self and visions of his future performances have been made. The facilitation of this process for viewers of exhibitions and to the recipients of art, both in Bielkowo and Wielopole, seems to be the inclusion of another tool in theatrical and artistic education.

Opis:
Coping with the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed different ways individuals react to frustrations they have experienced. Many times we have witnessed an increased level of aggression in interpersonal relationships and in the general social context. We find that there are some differences in coping and responding according to gender, with men showing a higher level of vulnerability and risk of inappropriate regulation and expression of anger when frustrated. To a certain extent, the answer to why this happens is provided by neuroscientific research, which shows that already at an early age, boys’ brains develop differently from girls’, as it takes more time to develop their stress-regulating mechanism; consequently, due to slower development, boys are more vulnerable to early stressful situations and have more problems with self-regulation of affective states at this early age. Together with the possibility of relational trauma in the family, to which many children are exposed from the earliest period of their lives and which plays an important role in providing a context for the development of affect regulation, that means that boys and men are even more vulnerable and sensitive to stress, aggression and trauma later in life. It makes sense to take these neuroscience findings into account when building an understanding of responses to stressful challenges, such as coping with a pandemic, as well as when planning appropriate models to help individuals cope with different types of stress.

Opis:
Emotions, both positive and negative, are part of our lives. However, until the 1960s, little attention was paid to the role they played in learning foreign languages. It all changed with the development of humanistic psychology, which focused, among others, on the integration of cognitive and affective teaching. Emotions also accompany encounters of individuals representing two different cultures. Intercultural communication is a complex process, which often involves culture shock, conflicts and various types of interpersonal relations. The aim of this paper is to accentuate the role of emotions in foreign language teaching. We will put forward several proposals concerning affective learning viewed from the perspective of intercultural communication. Finally, we will present the results of the study conducted among learners of Spanish, which illustrates the importance of affective factors in constructing students’ positive attitudes towards language and culture.

Opis:
Artykuł jest recenzją książki Barbary Szczekały pt. Mind-game films. Gry z narracją i widzem (2019). Książka kładzie nacisk na komplikacje i zawiłości narracyjne filmów gier umysłowych. Zadaniem odbiorcy byłoby te zawiłości zrozumieć, z rozsypanych puzzli ułożyć spójny obrazek, zagadki i tajemnice wyjaśnić.
The paper is a review of a book by Barbara Szczekała entitled Mind-game films. Gry z narracją i widzem [Mind-game Films: Games with Narrative and Spectator] (2019). The subject of the book is the current of “mind game films”, and the book is particularly concerned with the issue of the viewer’s reception of such films. Two modes of reception are confronted with each other. In the first one the emphasis is put on the complexity of mind-game films. The viewer’s task would be to straighten up this complexity, to complete a puzzle, to answer the riddles and solve mysteries. The reception is rational in nature, and the whole issue is put in the framework of cognitive psychology. This mode is juxtaposed to another one (the author opts for it), according to which the admirers of such films strive especially for embodied affects. Three such affects are described in detail: terror of identification, excess of accumulation and cognitive discomfort. Although these affects are rather unpleasant, the author insists that they attract the viewer to this kind of cinema.

Opis:
The problem of shame is at the centre of the debate surrounding Ida (2013) by Paweł Pawlikowski. Two discourses on the policy of shame collide with each other in the de- bate - the emancipatory one and the ethno-nationalistic one. According to the first, characteristic of the left and liberals, Pawlikowski’s film does not embarrass the Poles enough; on the other hand, right-wing critics argued that the work is distorting history to drive us, Poles, into shame, although there is no reason for them to be ashamed. The film itself - although it raises the problem of shame - focuses mainly on the affect of sadness. Jagielski makes the object of his interest the way in which the film, referring to the aesthetics of films of the Polish School, produces such negative feelings as loss or absence. He places Ida in the framework of the cinema of a mood, in order to think through the position of the viewer in relation to the images displayed on the screen. The film first invites us to establish an empathetic connection with the heroines saved from the Holocaust, and then lets us collide with the radical emptiness left after their loss.

The work is at the syntactic and discursive level: the active form of the verbs affects in French and Arabic: two verbs of emotion (to rage and its equivalent [ʕaɣḍaba] and two verbs of feeling (to admire and its equivalent [ʔaʕʒaba]). These are studied from the perspective of information dynamics within the sentence (Van Valin & LaPolla, 1997). The study is based on the French journalistic corpus EmoBase (Emolex 120M word project) and on the journalistic corpus ArabiCorpus (130M words).

Amplitude and frequency content are two important features of earthquakes that are different for near and far-fault earthquakes and in most of the standards, the effects of near-field earthquakes in loading are not considered. Therefore, study and comparison of these effects on structures is necessary. In this paper, structural operation against near and far fault earthquakes for two near sites and two far sites is investigated. For this purpose and in order to achieve an operation point of a structural model with six staircases with a mean lateral bending frame resistant system seismic hazard information is analyzed with regards to special plan spectrums of 2 different sites using near and far faults. An evaluation of the effects due to near and far fault earthquakes based on the Iran’s standard 2800 ranges on operation point and the comparison of operation effects of near and far fault spectrums with Iran’s standard are results of this research work. After the presentation of results obtained from time history analyses, some suggestions are proposed for design correction based on the regulations in near -field earthquakes. Keywords: Near-field earthquakes, moment frames, affect, behavior, Accelerogram compatibility with structural mechanism spectrum.

Opis:
According to the social psychological literature, egoistic relative deprivation impairs well-being but has at most little impact on political protest and engagement. We considered this view incomplete and over-simplifying. It was predicted that egoistic relative deprivation itself may impair democracy by increasing support for populism, and that the postulated relationship will be mediated by dysphoric affect, political alienation, and political paranoia. The empirical basis of the article were three studies carried out on nationwide random-quota samples of adult Poles: in 2002 (N = 1500), in 2010 (N = 800), and in 2017 (N = 2000). It was found that support for populism systematically depends directly on dysphoric affect and political paranoia, which are strengthened by egoistic relative deprivation. In 2017, with populist political groupings in power in Poland, the role of political alienation turned out to be ambiguous. Political alienation slightly strengthened political paranoia but directly lowered support for populism. In conclusion it was noted that in Poland's history and in the contemporary Polish mentality there is a great potential for negative affect, pessimism and bitterness. Relative deprivation experienced today successfully maintains this potential.

Opis:
Transmisja afektu i widma przeszłości w powieści Jesmyn Ward Śpiewajcie, z prochów, śpiewajcie Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza powieści Jesmyn Ward pt. Śpiewajcie, z prochów, śpiewajcie (2017) w świetle pojęcia „międzypokoleniowej transmisji fantomu” Nicolasa Abrahama i Marii Torok oraz teorii transmisji afektu Teresy Brennan.
The essay discusses Jesmyn Ward’s novel Sing, Unburied, Sing (2017) through Nicolas Abraham’s and Maria Torok’s concept of “transgenerational phantom” and Teresa Brennan’s theory of the transmission of affect. While the novel focuses on poor blacks in the contemporary American South, and, therefore, on the experience of those marginalized and excluded from official discourse, the narrative seems to transgress racial, social, and generational boundaries to address the human predicament in ways that are both visceral and poetic, disturbing and magical. By employing the trope of haunting to talk about racial oppression, the author combines past and present to demonstrate how slavery and racism continue to take their toll, producing more individual and communal traumas. The essay argues that in Sing, Unburied, Sing Ward not only deconstructs such dominant Western categories as past and present, black and white, male and female, or life and death, but also indicates a way of dealing with and communicating traumatic realities that goes beyond the Symbolic patterns of making sense of the world.

Opis:
Today, the concept of dramaturgy refers primarily to the space of theater or, more broadly, to performative arts. But as the concept of drama has passed into the scientific discourse of sociology, anthropology or literary studies, so is it with dramaturgy. The understanding that appears here refers to its meaning as a special tension on the level of sensually experienced and perceived artistic events. The subject of interest here is the dramatic aesthetics of experience in the field of performing and visual arts. The aesthetic categories related to the senses are often of a physical origin and amorphous in nature. The roughness and harshness of the title in their origin are physical categories that can be experienced primarily through the sense of touch. In this intertwining of senses, we are talking about their dramaturgy, because they cannot usually be separated from each other and various works appeal to touch and other senses at the same time. The process of creating a work and its reception is an action, process, meeting, the playwright of which is both the creator / creator and the recipient. The considerations concern changes in the perception of the senses, from the glorification of the sense of sight to the ennoblement of the “lower” senses, the place and function of the classical and interactive museum and haptic art, as well as the polysensory and immersive reception designed in performance and theater.

Opis:
Investigating Erna Rosenstein’s poems containing partial accounts of her parents’ murder after their escape from the Lviv ghetto, this article proposes a reading founded on two categories – forensics and shock – and therefore departs from the principles put forward by historical narratives (including the meticulous reconstruction of facts and pedantic devotedness to their organisation typical of this genre, constructing such a story whose integrity would satisfy the reader whereas moral framework would set formal limits). Forensics – a strategy that emphasises the role of material traces – is related to the clarity of a process and the rise of a community. Intuitively, Rosenstein applies a quasi-crime story narrative to her poetry, which allows it to cross the distance usually separating the victims of the Shoah from a reader belonging to an entirely different reality. The presence of a mystery makes it possible for the murdered to become close to us once again thanks to the medium of a wounded body. Shock, in turn, is a category inherent in any attempt of reaching the unthinkable (that is, the events that have not been lived through or experienced directly). Moreover, it employs affective stimulation which engages a reader in anethical way. This article consists of three parts, whose division reflects the necessities of scrutinising Rosenstein’s relation to surrealism, exploring her strategy of influencing a reader by means of affect and mood, and probing her status of a precursor, visible in the autonomy granted to the nonhuman actants or her strives for domesticating entropy.

The very relation between possibility of writing and sensitivity is a main concern of this interpretation of Miron Białoszewski’s poetry. At the start, I notice traumatic state of writing subjectivity, which I see as a negative affect. Białoszewski’s trauma manifests itself as an acedia in the Leżenia poetry cycle, in which the poet searches for another, positive affective simulation as well. He finds it in the very work of language, of sounds, and of material reality surrounding him. As he tries to revive himself and his writing mainly through the senses of touching and hearing/listening, I use the model of subjectivity described by Jean-Luc Nancy in the essay On listening,  to understand how creative, writing subjectivity works on sensual and language levels.

Opis:
Study participants are 46 women (age 23.48 ± 4.88 years) with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (M-R-K-H) syndrome. Occurrence of the M-R-K-H syndrome is one in 4000-5000 female children. It was investigated (a) whether coping styles mediate the effect of neuroticism (N) on positive (PA) and negative (NA) affect, and (b) whether this mediation is moderated by the level of N as well as (c) whether this moderated mediation is moderated by length of awareness of illness. Methods: Neuroticism, coping style as well as positive and negative emotions were assessed using the Polish version of NOE-FFI, CISS and Scale of Emotional State. Results: Emotion coping style fully (for PA) or partly (for NA) mediated the relationship between neuroticism and emotions and these mediations were moderated by the level of N. Additionally, direct effect of neuroticism on NA was moderated by the time for which a patient has been aware of the disease. Conclusions: The level of neuroticism and the length of illness are important factors for the psychological functioning of women with M-R-K-H Syndrome. In women with medium and high neuroticism, (positive) effect of N on NA was indirect and also direct – but only in those who have been aware of the diagnosis for 6 years or more. Relations with positive emotions were different: the indirect effect (negative) was observed only in women with a moderate and low neuroticism.

Opis:
Nurses’ work requires an exclusive devotion and commitment. Although it is particularly burdening and highly stressful, it is not well paid and has a low status in the social hierarchy. The aim of the study was: 1) assessment and validity of various aspects of job; 2) understanding emotions towards nurses’ work; 3) determination of job satisfaction perceived by studying nurses. The study involved 281 students of extramural complementary Nursing Course at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The authors’ demographic questionnaire, the Work Description Inventory (WDI), the Job Affect Scale (JAS), and the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) were used in the study. The obtained results were statistically analysed. Students obtained the average performance in the above mentionedmeasures of job evaluation. As regards the evaluation of superiors and the work content, the results obtained in the tested sample were slightly elevated. In terms of the importance of various aspects of job evaluation, the relationship with colleagues as well as the content and hours of work were found to be the most important, while salary appeared to be the least important aspect. The evaluation of the affect at work showed that students achieved the average results using the positive emotions scale and low results on the negative affect scale. The job satisfaction index values suggest that the students are on average satisfied with the work in their profession. On the basis of the performed study, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1) according to the students’ assessment, the relationship with colleagues as well as the content and time of work are the most important aspects of work, whereas salary is the least significant; 2) more than half of the surveyed felt positive emotions at their workplace; 3) respondents were on average satisfied with their work; 4) undertaking the extramural complementary nursing course is associated with students’ positive attitude towards the nursing profession and their place of work.
Badaniom poddano 281 studentek i studentów pielęgniarstwa, studiów pomostowych niestacjonarnych UWM w Olsztynie. W pracy wykorzystano: autorską ankietę demograficzną, Arkusz Opisu Pracy (Work Description Inventory, WDI), Skalę Afektu Pracy (Job Affect Scale, JAS), Skalę Satysfakcji z Pracy (Job Satisfaction Survey, SJS). Uzyskane wyniki poddano analizie statystycznej.

Opis:
Studies based on the most common diagnostic categories do not bring conclusive results concerning the overlapping and distinctive features of anxiety and depression, especially in the areas of attentional functioning, structure of affect, and cognitive emotion regulation. However, a new typology has been proposed which treats anxiety and depression as personality types (Fajkowska, 2013). These types – arousal and apprehension anxiety as well as valence and anhedonic depression – are constructed based on two criteria: specific structure and functions (reactive or regulative). The present paper critically examines the empirical evidence related to this approach. The data mostly confirmed the prediction that the similarities and differences in attentional and affective functioning among the anxiety and depression types would be related to their shared and specific structural and functional characteristics. The new typology turned out to be suitable for integrating the existing research findings by relating them to the structure and functions of anxiety and depression. As a result, it is useful in explaining some of the inconsistencies in literature, as it allows to identify the overlapping and distinctive features of the anxiety and depression types. It also helps to understand the mechanisms contributing to the development and maintenance of anxiety and depression, which might be useful in diagnosis and treatment. However, even though Fajkowska’s approach is an important contribution to the understanding of anxiety and depression, it is not exhaustive. Its limitations are discussed, along with proposed modifications of the theory, as well as further research directions.

In queer studies, both socially- and literature-oriented, theatrical metaphors are used to formulate ontological and epistemological research basis and its object. According to Judith Butler’s gender theory, performance and performativity are the basic concepts regarding a constructive understanding of identity. On that account, this article presents different uses of theatrical vocabulary, ranging form Judith Bulter’s differentiation between “performance” and “performativity”, to Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s project of “reparative performance”, which goes far beyond Butler’s exclusion of artistic context.

The main hypothesis of studies presented in this article is that episodic implicit evaluations (affects) toward task-relevant objects determine thinking and decisions by actively placing them within or outside the scope of attention. In these studies we also aimed to test the impact of regulatory focus on implicit evaluations and goal pursuit. We applied the Promotion-Prevention Self-control Scale as a measure of mind-set during thinking in the Wason Selection Task (WST) in Study 1 and Island Decision Game (IDG) in Study 2. Directly after learning of the tasks, participants evaluated (in affective priming paradigm) objects that constituted the task’s content. The findings are in line with the hypothesis stating that goals influence the way in which objects are automatically evaluated. The effects of promotion mind-set were more pronounced in both studies. Promotion-focused individuals positively assessed objects that serve as a confirmation. The implicit evaluations by prevention-oriented individuals disclosed their falsifying approach to the WST. The positive implicit evaluation of correct objects suggests their sensitivity to information useful for falsification and is consistent with their tendency to cautiously self-control thinking.

The study of inner speech is appropriate to carry out in the plane of interaction of various scientific studies. This approach allows us to analyze the specifics of functioning of inner speech at the level of artistic discourse. Such phenomenon as inner speech presents not only the protagonist's outlook, their emotional state or social aspects, but also demonstrates, under the influence of extraordinary factors, the intensity of affect expression in the addresser's speech activity. Inner speech in an emotive situation is marked by peculiar characteristics, which indicates its unique multidimensional essence.

A sample of 157 participants took part in the study, in which musical associations and emotions were analysed in relation to seven groups of musical themes from The Lord of the Rings films (LOTR). The LOTR soundtrack is a good example of the use of symbols in music to represent ideas, characters, etc. The results show that both the respondents’ associations and the musical emotions they experienced were related to the characteristics of musical motifs. The results are discussed in relation to the assumed features of musical motifs composed by Howard Shore.

Artykuł jest afektywną analizą współczesnych filmów science fiction z perspektywy specyfiki kobiecego doświadczenia. Cechą charakterystyczną najnowszych produkcji fantastycznonaukowych jest afektywno-emocjonalny kontakt z pozaziemską obcością. Doświadczenie to jest ucieleśniane także przez widzów. Mimo ikonografii oraz prób popularyzacji nauki właściwych gatunkowi, trybem narracyjnym omawianych filmów (m.in.
The article presents an affective analysis of contemporary science-fiction films, exploring the specificity of female experience within the phenomenon. I argue that affective and emotional contact with extra-terrestrial estrangement is a significant symptom of genre modification. This experience is also embodied by viewers. Despite the iconography and attempts to popularize science specific to the genre, the narration mode of Interstellar (dir. Christopher Nolan, 2014), Arrival (dir. Denis Villeneuve, 2016) and Annihilation (dir. Alex Garland, 2018) is melodrama, and the characters think and act not only through knowledge or reasoning, but also through emotions or affects. The article analyzes the following aspects of the latest science-fiction films: corporeal notion of estrangement, affective feedback between the known and unknown, alternative experience of time mediated by achronological narration, focalization and kinodynamics of cosmic spectacles, as well as affective audience experiences: embodiment, empathy and identification.

PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Aby odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jaki nastrój i jakie emocje do‑ minują u Polaków w czasie pandemii COVID‑19, zastosowano dwa wystandaryzowane narzędzia badawcze: Przymiotnikową Skalę Nastroju (UMACL) Matthewsa, Chamberlaina i Jonesa w polskiej adaptacji Goryńskiej i Skalę Uczuć Pozytywnych i Negatywnych (SUPIN) Watsona i Clark w pol‑ skiej adaptacji Brzozowskiego.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the research was to diagnose the mood and affect of adult Poles during the COVID‑19 pandemic and to analyze the connection between the dimensions of mood and affect and sociodemographic variables. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: In order to answer the question about the mood and affect of Poles during the COVID‑19 pandemic two standardized research tools were used: The UMACL Adjective Mood Checklist (Matthews, Chamberlain, Jones; Polish adaptation by Goryńska) and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Watson, Clark; Polish adaptation, SUPIN by Brzozo‑ wski). 595 participants took part in the study, 80.50% of whom were women and 19.50% men. The participants were between the age of 18‑75 years. THE PROCES OF ARGUMENTATION: A statistical analysis was carried out with the use of the descriptive statistics and nonparametric tests: Mann‑Whitney and Kruskal‑Wallis. After detecting statistically significant differences, post‑hoc analysis with Dunn’s test was performed to identify statistically significant different groups. RESEARCH RESULTS: Chronic pandemic daily life had a significant impact on the mental con‑ dition of Poles, causing lower mood and the domination of negative affect. The current findings suggest that the COVID‑19 pandemic has negative consequences for mental health, especially among women (being woman is associated with the severity of tense arousal and negative affect) and people with lower education (including students). CONSULSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMENDATIONS: The conducted research may help in identifying potential risk groups for mental disorders during the COVID‑19 pandemic. These groups may require special attention and support, through the implementation of specific preven‑ tion programs or psychological care, in order to prevent long‑term negative consequences for their mental health.

The article examines the problem of the special place occupied by the prose writer Wilhelm Mach in the Polish literary field in the 1960s, when it was suggested that the novel had mainly cognitive functions. Mach does not openly oppose this tendency, but his work is concerned with the question what makes literature an experience. The article traces the development of this problem in Mach’s work, focusing on novel scenes and episodes of killing or torturing domestic animals in which the writer’s mechanism for depicting affects plays a key role. Their analysis shows that, according to Mach, a literary work works when it transmits affects and demonstrates the ultimate possibilities for their expression. The article tests the hypothesis that Wilhelm Mach’s search for affective realism can be seen as a counterpoint and context to Blaga Dimitrova’s fiction.

In the following article the author considers a formlessness phenomenon which, at first, is understood as a philosophical term (Georges Bataille’s concept), then as aesthetic category (informel painting, Tadeusz Kantor's theatre, Leo Lipski's literature). Commentary is conducted from the perspective of ‘affective criticism’. The author analyses meaning, function and figures which formlessness becomes in different artistic works. Then, the author examines avant-garde interest in formlessness as a manifestation of search and establishment of ‘alternative’ modernity.

Opis:
Dance shown on the cinema screen may make a stronger impression on the viewer than if it was watched live. Referring to Climax (2018) by Gaspar Noé, film critics wrote about the first dance scene using terms that suggest its highly intense, physiologically stimulating effect. The on-screen dance is intensified by the audio-visual setting of the film, which provokes a special kind of somatic engagement, manifested through sensations coming from the viewer’s body. Thus, sensuous theory seems to be a particularly adequate methodology for explaining phenomena of the embodied reception of film dance. Analyzing this phenomenon on the example of Climax, the author uses the perspective of Vivian Sobchack’s sensuous theory, referring also to dance phenomenology, affect studies, performance theory and the discovery of mirror neurons. Towards the end of the text, psychoanalytic mechanisms of affective involvement in on-screen dance are also briefly indicated.

The starting point for the reflection on Joshua Oppenheimer’s films is the concept of performance by Rebecca Schneider – especially her remarks on historical reconstructions – and the theory of affects by Jill Bennett (because the actual effect of performative practices is being “affectively moved”). In the author’s reading of The Act of Killing (2012) and The Look of Silence (2014), these historical performances registered by the director, with their ability to affect emotions, i.e. to provoke specific affective reactions (disgust, repulsion, sympathy, fascination), offer a new way in which genocide can be talked about. Starting from the analysis of Oppenheimer’s films, the author wonders how the memory of historical events is constructed and reconstructed, to what extent the past exerts influence on the present, and, finally, whether it is possible to observe yourself “from the outside” to face your own affections.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to transplant the category of New Sincerity, which originates from Anglo-Saxon literary studies, to the reflection on the changes in recent Polish cinema. The author's diagnoses are discussed in the context of new trends in the humanities and arts in order to answer the question how Polish cinema is positioned in relation to them. Using the examples of such films as Cicha noc (Silent Night, dir. Piotr Domalewski, 2017), Zabij to i wyjedź z tego miasta (Kill It and Leave This Town, dir. Mariusz Wilczyński, 2019) and Wszystkie nasze strachy (All Our Fears, dir. Łukasz Ronduda, Łukasz Gutt, 2021), the author tries to show the filmmakers' growing interest in such affective dispositions of the protagonists of the movies as sensitivity, vulnerability, and care. The proposed understanding of New Sincerity in the context of Polish cinema refers to films by directors who share the conviction, present in the Polish public debate, about the social polarisation and crisis of community, and at the same time offer a different – reparative and hopeful – model of relationality.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present the issue of intention, which accompanies a perpetrator committing a crime under art. 148 § 4 of the penal code – homicide under the influence of intense agitation justified by the circumstances. The content discusses the specifics of this crime, referring both to the explanation of the concept of strong agitation (affect) and to the approximation of views on the circumstances that may justify acting in this state. The subject of the further part of the article is to explain the specificity of different forms of intention which are known to the Polish criminal law. The analysis includes direct intention (dolus directus), eventual intention (dolus eventualis), sudden intention (dolus repentinus) and premeditated intention (dolus premeditatus). The views of both representatives of criminal law and a wealth of judicial decisions are presented, which relate to attempts to clarify whether it is possible to commit the offence of art. 148 § 4 of the penal code in each of the mentioned intentions, and if so, how the mental processes of the perpetrator of this offence are shaped in each of these situations and what motivation may accompany it.

Opis:
Sigmund Freud famously distinguished normal mourning and pathological melancholy by the affects’ duration and persistence. This temporal perspective paves the way for reading affect beyond its expressivity and considering it a question of form. In the article, this radical formalist approach is used to examine the way depressive affect manifests itself in the structure of the music video to Portishead’s Only You (dir. Chris Cunningham, 1998), in particular concerning tempo and rhythm. Eugenie Brinkema’s remarks on grief as an affective form marked by heaviness and inertia serve as the basis for analysing tempo. The exploration of rhythm is rooted in Peter Kivy’s assertion that reading musical expression is mediated by understanding the affective properties of the human voice. This makes way for applying Julia Kristeva’s concept of the depressive discourse, understood as a set of particular speech patterns and qualities indicative of depression/melancholy.
Zygmunt Freud rozróżnił normalną żałobę i patologiczną melancholię w oparciu o czas trwania i trwałość afektu. W artykule perspektywa radykalnego formalizmu została wykorzystana do zbadania sposobu, w jaki depresyjny afekt przejawia się w strukturze teledysku do utworu Portishead Only You (reż. Chris Cunningham, 1998), w szczególności w odniesieniu do tempa i rytmu. Opis:
The aim of this paper is to raise questions about how cinema can allow us to rethink our relationship with the environment in the context of what is known today as the Anthropocene. In the discussion, I chart the current debates about the ecological in the humanities, with a particular focus on new materialisms, to argue that cinema can be fruitfully thought of as part of what anthropologist Anna Tsing (2015) calls the “arts of noticing”. I then turn to a consideration of the potential influx of affect theories on ecocriticism and film studies, before sketching out possible approaches to studying film from an affective, new materialist and postanthropocentric perspective. These approaches might have wider implications for rhetorical perspectives on cinema, especially for those investigating emotional appeals.

Opis:
Emotion and affect are different, yet intricately interwoven. Emotions such as fear, joy, or sadness are biological in as far as they are physically felt, but they are relational in as far as they are more fully experienced. Affect arises out of the relational quality of emotion—it consists of the myriad ways in which emotions are embodied, expressed, and enacted. Emotion and affect are influenced by their physical and symbolic contexts. In terms of physical context, data for this article were collected from two different research studies and several sites in the Free State Province of South Africa. Two forms of data were collected: verbal data and images/artworks. In terms of symbolic context, these verbal and visual forms of language and their functioning were explored to generate insights on the social construction of emotion and affect. Margaret Wetherell’s work provides a theoretical basis for analyzing emotion and affect. Rather than conceptualizing emotion in terms of obscure or esoteric formulations, her “practice-based” approach grounds the study of emotion by examining its manifestation in actions. When taken together, action and practice imply pattern and order, form and function, process and consequence. Both projects featured in this paper are sensitive studies that stir emotion. This is fertile ground for exploring emotion and affect in participants’ narratives. It is also fertile ground for exploring how emotion and affect may influence the qualitative researcher and the research process itself. Accordingly, this paper offers an additional layer of analysis on the functioning of intersubjectivity, power, emotion, and affect in the research encounter. Concluding insights endorse the practice of mindfulness as a fruitful approach to manage researcher subjectivity in the qualitative research encounter.

This article suggests creating networks of lexical items in the field of affects, in the context of teaching French as a foreign language. After a lexico-semantic study of some intensifiers present with certain lexical items from the field of affects, we will look at what kind of networks should be developed in order to help students memorise lexicon and associated collocates of intensity. The underlying hypothesis is that building these networks should enable learners to better memorise the lexical associations of the field in question.
