The aim of this study was to propose a classification of teachers’ burnout patterns. For this purpose, a qualitative analysis of different burnout patterns shown in a sample of Slovenian primary school teachers was performed. Respondents’ burnout scores were obtained via the MBI-ES. Eight distinct burnout profiles emerged from the analysis, indicating that the territory between the positive and negative endpoints of teacher burnout is complex. The findings of the study could be used as a framework for future research regarding teacher burnout and for designing interventions for its amelioration.

Job burnout as a social phenomenon covers more and more groups of employees. The problem mainly affects professions of a social nature, which require constant contact with other people. Previous studies have shown that police service is classified as high-risk in the context of job burnout due to the mode and manner of work that police officers perform every day. In their work, policemen are faced with ever greater requirements regarding their competence, availability, high quality and appropriate pace of performed tasks. Therefore, in their service they are particularly vulnerable to being affected by job burnout syndrome. This article attempts to determine the extent of the phenomenon of job burnout syndrome and its causes in a group of police officers working and representing various police departments in the city of Krakow. The research was conducted on the basis of the Polish version of the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI).

Burn-out or exhaustion syndrome is caused by a prolonged exposure to a chronic professional stress. Public Health Professionals are the most exposed to this kind of risk. The ultimate goal here is to determine the prevalence of the burn-out and search for factors associated with this pathology among those who work in the field of health. Our sample, which is from the Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat, consists of 150 nurses, 80 doctors, and 40 administrators. A self-questionnaire was employed, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) as well as a clinical interview. The results of this study show a high degree of burnout. Moreover, 56.66% of participants show a high level of emotional exhaustion, 45.18% suffer from a high level of depression. Meanwhile, the loss of a sense of personal accomplishment is high among 48.51% of those surveyed. The emotional exhaustion observed among people who have worked for a long time ago is associated with the means of transportation used and to the unsuitable hours of work. Depersonalization exists among elderly people and the oldest at work. This study confirms the existence of a high level of burnout among health professionals. Many socio-demographic and socio-professional factors contribute to the increase in the level that people are affected. These factors encourage the promotion of better working life conditions.

Cel badań. Celem badań była analiza zjawiska wypalenia zawodowego wśród nauczycieli. Materiał i metody. Przeszukano bazy danych EBSCOhost i Wirtualnej Biblioteki Nauki. Dokonano przeglądu literatury wykorzystującej terminy (słowa kluczowe) „wypalenie zawodowe”, „wypalenie zawodowe nauczycieli”. Wyniki. Najczęściej stosowanym narzędziem badawczym w badaniach diagnostycznych poświęconych wypaleniu nauczycieli okazał się kwestionariusz Maslach Burnout Inventory. Osiągnięcia badań nad wypaleniem nauczycieli wciąż pozostają dalekie od zadowalających. Głównym promotorem badań nad zjawiskiem wypalenia nauczycieli jest Sęk, choć kwestię tę poruszają również inni badacze. Płeć i staż pracy mają wpływ na zjawisko wypalenia zawodowego nauczycieli. Wnioski. W związku z dalszą reformą systemu edukacji konieczne jest systematyczne monitorowanie zjawiska wypalenia zawodowego nauczycieli.
Background. The purpose of the study was to examine the phenomenon of professional burnout among teachers. Material and methods. A search of EBSCOhost and Virtual Library of Science was performed. The literature review employed the terms (keywords) ‘burnout’, ‘burnout in teachers’. Results. The most frequently used research tool in diagnostic studies referring to burnout in teachers was Maslach Burnout Inventory. The achievements of research on burnout among teachers are still far from satisfactory. The main promoter of studies concerning the phenomenon of burnout in teachers is Sęk, although the issue has also been dealt with by other researchers. Gender and job seniority affect the phenomenon of professional burnout in teachers. Conclusions. Owing to further reform of the education system, it is necessary to systematically monitor the phenomenon of burnout among teachers.

Wypalenie zawodowe tradycyjnie jest wiązane z zawodami tzw. pomocowymi, społecznymi, z misją. Należy do nich zawód nauczyciela czy pedagoga, których wykonywanie wiąże się z dużą odpowiedzialnością. Wszelkie dysfunkcje i obniżona sprawność w ich pracy mogą mieć znaczące skutki (także społeczne). Niniejsze opracowanie przedstawia syndrom wypalenia zawodowego wśród pracowników oświaty (zwłaszcza nauczycieli), z uwzględnieniem czynników sprzyjających wypaleniu o charakterze indywidualnym, interpersonalnym i organizacyjnym. Starano się przy tym wskazać specyfikę organizacyjną i społeczną charakteryzującą polską edukację. Celem opracowania jest wskazanie, w jaki sposób zjawisko wypalenia było badane w Polsce w ostatniej dekadzie i zaproponowanie alternatywnych metod pomiaru. Autorka postawiła pytania: co było najczęstszym przedmiotem badań i jakich narzędzi pomiarowych używali badacze? Dokonano analizy wybranych kilkudziesięciu publikacji prezentujących wyniki badań empirycznych, które dotyczyły wypalenia zawodowego wśród pracowników polskiej oświaty (opublikowanych w latach 2010–2020). Dzięki temu udało się ustalić dominujące obszary i metody badań w tym zakresie, wskazać ich ograniczenia i przedstawić alternatywne propozycje.
Burnout is traditionally associated with the so-called helping profession, welfare, social, mission. This also includes the teaching profession, which involves great responsibility. Any dysfunctions and reduced efficiency in the work of a teacher may have major, including social, consequences. This study presents the burnout syndrome among educational workers (especially teachers), taking into account factors contributing to individual, interpersonal and organizational burnout. At the same time, efforts were made to indicate the organizational and social specificity of education in Poland. The aim of the study is to indicate how the problem of burnout was studied in Poland in the 2010–2020. The author was aimed to determine the most common subject of research and what measurement tools were used by the researchers. An analysis was conducted of dozens of selected publications presenting the results of empirical research on occupational burnout among employees in the Polish education system (published in 2010–2020). As a result, it was possible to identify the dominant areas and methods of research in this area, indicate their limitations, and present alternatives.

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the Serbian versions of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and the Study Burnout Inventory (SBI) among fifth-year medical students at 5 universities in Serbia.Material and MethodsThe study included 573 fifthyear medical students at 5 universities in Serbia. The research instrument consisted of SBI and CBI. The reliability of these instruments was assessed using an internal consistency measure (Cronbach’s α), an intra-class coefficient (ICC) and factor analysis.ResultsCronbach’s α for SBI was 0.83, including for exhaustion 0.73, for cynicism 0.70, and for inadequacy 0.48. The test-retest reliability (ICC) was 0.75. Cronbach’s α for personal burnout on CBI was 0.89, for the faculty-related burnout 0.86, and for the faculty-members-related burnout 0.92. Cronbach’s α for CBI was 0.93. The factor analysis for SBI showed 2 factors and for CBI 3 factors.ConclusionsThis study revealed that the Serbian versions of both SBI and CBI could be used for the assessment of burnout in this population.

ObjectivesThe aim of the research was to analyze the impact of selected factors: years of service, the number of interventions, self-efficacy and stress, on occupational burnout. It was hypothesized that firefighters with more years of service and a bigger number of interventions would be characterized by higher perceived stress and burnout, and that self-efficacy would have an impact on reducing the level of perceived stress and burnout.Material and MethodsThe participants were firefighters (N = 576) from 12 Polish voivodeships, aged 20–58 years, with different seniority: up to 3, 4–8, 9–15 or >15 years of service. The following research tools were used: the Link Burnout Questionnaire, the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale, the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, and an independent questionnaire to gather additional information. A correlation between particular variables was carried out; the Kruskal-Wallis test was performed together with a post-hoc analysis to examine differences in the severity of individual variables depending on seniority, followed by a path analysis studied together with the identification of direct and indirect impacts.ResultsThe number of interventions did not affect the severity of experienced stress or any of the aspects of burnout. Work experience directly influenced the level of perceived stress (β = 0.219), disillusion (β = 0.076), and relationship deterioration (β = –0.156). The generalized sense of self-efficacy was found to impact both on reducing the sense of stress (β = –0.418) and on all 4 aspects of professional burnout: psychophysical exhaustion (β = –0.181), relationship deterioration (β = –0.16), the sense of professional inefficacy (β = –0.275) and disillusion (β = –0.143).ConclusionsThe results have shown that: 1) the number of interventions does not affect the severity of experienced stress or particular aspects of burnout; 2) years of service increase the severity of experienced stress and occupational burnout; 3) self-efficacy has an impact both on reducing the sense of stress and on all aspects of burnout.

Professional burnout syndrome is undoubtedly another civilisation disease that affects modern societies. In May 2021 professional burnout was included within the list of the WHO International Classification of Diseases, however, not as a disease, but as an occupational syndrome significantly affecting health of an employee. However, it is worth noting that it is only from 2022 that professional burnout will have become a disease which will need to be treated. The research presented below shows that there are many factors which cause this new disease, and stress is among the main ones. Working as a teacher, which is considered one of the professions of supportive nature, means being exposed to various stress factors. One of the most dangerous effects is professional burnout which can lead, among others, to many health disorders, subjective treatment of students, and ultimately, make teachers resign from their job.

This paper concerns the psychometric evaluation of the Polish version of a self-report questionnaire to measure burnout. Although the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is the most commonly employed measure of burnout, researchers have been troubled by some of its psychometric limitations. The aim of this study is to examine the MBI-GS factor structure in three occupational groups (both within the human services sector and elsewhere), and to evaluate its reliability (internal consistency). In evaluating factorial validity, we carried out an explanatory analysis and a number of confirmatory analyses (using the total database and the three occupational groups). An additional aim was to explore the relationships between biographic characteristics (gender, age, work experience, employment level, and occupation) and burnout. The results of the confirmatory analyses show us that all three models fit the data almost acceptably, both in the total sample (N=998) and in the separate occupational groups, and that the fit of the three-factor solution appears to be somewhat better than that of the one- and two-factor solutions. When the initial model failed to fit the data well, we had to eliminate two items with weak reliability. The results then confirmed the factorial validity of the MBI-GS—as expected, the MBI-GS consists of three scales that are moderately correlate.

The main goal of the research was to compare the consequences of occupational stress and burnout in the professional group of nurses and policewomen. Both groups share a place of residence. The work consists of several parts. At the beginning, the essence of the concept of "stress" and "occupational burnout" was explained, the essence of the problem was pointed out, and the subject and method of the study were defined. Next, basic information about the questionnaires: OSI and MBI, which was used in the study. In the methodological part, a description of the research group and research results has been presented. The last part discusses the results of the research, as well as theses and issues that arose during the study. Finally, general reflections on the social phenomenon of occupational stress and burnout are presented, as well as the impact on the environment of nurses and policemen.

Objective: The aim of this study was to review recent medical findings related to burnout, its diagnosis, treatment, characteristic pathophysiological features, and preventive measures. Materials and Methods: A systematic review of the scientific literature in PubMed/Medline was performed. The most recent and important findings were reported. Results: Burnout was found to be a risk factor for myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease. It was also related to reduced fibrinolytic capacity, decreased capacity to cope with stress and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hypoactivity. Severe burnout symptoms are associated with a lower level or smaller increase of the cortisol awakening response (CAR), higher dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate (DHEAS) levels, lower cortisol/DHEAS ratios and stronger suppression as measured by the dexamethasone suppression test (DST). More and more literature works suggest that the evaluation of the HPA axis should be brought to the attention of primary care physicians. There is no universal agreement on specific treatment and diagnostic measures to evaluate the wide range of HPA axis disorders. The cost-effective evaluation of adrenal hormones via saliva samples by a primary care physician may significantly alter the course of therapy in numerous chronic disease patients. Psychiatric disorders may have similar symptoms, but they have distinctive hormonal profiles. Having burnout recognized as a medical condition would help in differentiating burnout from similar clinical syndromes, such as depression or anxiety, and provide appropriate treatment to burnout patients. Proper treatment is essential for a fast and full recovery. Conclusion: Chronic stress-related disorders often fall outside the category of a "true" disease and are often treated as depression or not treated at all. The evaluation of adrenal hormones via saliva samples helps to predict burnout. Burnout screening techniques, dietary and nutritional guidelines and lifestyle changes for supporting the HPA function need to be developed. The presented material includes hormonal, dietary, and pharmaceutical perspectives.

This article is dedicated to the problem of professional burnout among Polish teachers and psychologists of state schools after the reform in the Polish system of education when gymnasiums (junior high schools) were introduced. A group of primary school, junior high school and high school teachers and psychologists are analyzed and compared in terms of three dimensions of burnout: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced sense of personal accomplishment. Despite sharing the same work environment with teachers, school psychologists are those who are supposed to cope with burnout better because of their professional knowledge and experience.

Due to many reasons, the phenomenon of occupational burnout in educational institutions is ignored. Therefore, it was considered advisable to carry out a research in the scope of the level, frequency and causes of occupational burnout among teachers in secondary school. The research work subjects are teachers of a randomly selected mechanical school complex in Poland. The results of the research presented in this paper lead to the conclusion that the occupational burnout syndrome affects the surveyed teachers. Most of the teachers are aware of the occupational burnout affecting them, however they are unable to unequivocally define its level. Almost 80% of respondents apply no remedies.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of personality traits on burnout among staff at the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The present study is applied and survey-descriptive from aspect of aim and data collection, respectively. The statistical population of the study was all employees of the Central Bank, of which 348 persons were selected by simple random sampling method. Research tools were NEO questionnaire of personality traits, Maslach and Jackson Burnout Inventory (1981). Cronbach's alpha to evaluate the reliability of questionnaires was obtained 0.734 and 0.716, respectively. Data collected were analyzed using structural equation modeling software in Lisrel environment and regression and Pearson's correlation tests in SPSS software. The findings of the study show that there is a significant relationship between five dimensions of personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, Experience-taking, consistency and loyalty) with burnout. The results showed that people with the neuroticism personality trait and more consistency have been more prone to job burnout. Other results also showed that the neuroticism, extraversion, consistency and loyalty personality traits are good predictors of job burnout variable.

The word burn out, comes from English “to burn”, which means burning and the words “out” from, out, out. Thus, the phrase “burn-out” is an expression of burnout or extinction. The original fire and the ignition of the symbol-psychologically high level of motivation goes to the person affected by the symptoms of burnout syndrome into extinction, where there is nothing, which means where he has nothing to worry about. For the Burnout Syndrome, there is as yet no generally accepted definition. Herbert Freudenberger first described this syndrome in 1975. The most important feature is chronic work-related stress and the imbalance between occupational expectation and professional reality, between ideals and reality. The burnout syndrome is the total burnout of human energy (and energy reserves) at the mental, physical and spiritual level in connection with the exercise of the profession. Burnout is formally defined as a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion that has caused long-term persistence in situations that are emotionally challenging. This emotional difficulty occurs when great expectations are combined with chronic stress (Křivohlavý, 2012 p.18). The International Classification of Diseases advises burnout syndrome under ICD 10, category Z 73.O entitled Problems associated with difficulties in organizing life that have psychological, physical symptoms and symptoms in the plane of social relations. The severity of the burnout syndrome is currently up to date with both its content and its increase. “Our legislation does not define this disease in any category of legal norms, it does not recognize it as a diagnosis and we do not have one case law or legal argument developing the process or condition caused by the burnout syndrome” (Šoltésová, Ivor, 2006, s.20). In Spain and the United States of America, burnout syndrome is recognized by law as an occupational disease.

Considering the strong impact of chronic exposure to psychosocial stressors at a workplace in relational and incentives contexts of undertaking professional duties, those aspects gain in importance in teachers’ work. A person stays in a continuouscontact with a student, parent or another teacher, and their motivation seems to be a key aspect for the entire education process. The presented article is an attempt to capturestress indicators in a teachers’ work, as well as ways of dealing with them in a school reality. The article begins by highlighting the most important stress definitions, followed by a brief methodology of self-research. Then the author describes stressors present in teacher’s work, which were identified in empirical studies, and ways of dealing with stress used by tested teachers. The article ends with conclusions and recommendations for further representative studies.

Introduction. Existential attitudes distinguished by G. Reker express the meaning of life and affect the way individuals perceive themselves, the reality as well as their ability to cope with challenges. Thus, it can be assumed that life attitudes also determine burnout understood as a syndrome of psychological symptoms that occur in professionally active people due to chronic occupational stress. Objective. The aim of the study is to examine which existential attitudes determine burnout in nurses employed in rural primary healthcare settings in Poland Material and methods. The study sample comprised 120 nurses employed in rural primary healthcare settings in Poland. The Life Attitude Profile – Revised (LAP-R) adapted by R. Klamut and The Link Burnout Questionnaire (LBQ) adapted by A. Jaworowska were used in the research. Results. The stronger the belief of the surveyed nurses concerning life goals they possess and the more internally coherent they are, the lower psychophysical exhaustion they experience. Whereas, psychophysical exhaustion rises with an increase in the need for introducing changes in life. Relationship deterioration and disillusion decrease with the level of engagement in seeking new goals in life. The sense of professional ineffectiveness drops if the belief of the nurses that they possess life goals gets stronger. Moreover, the stronger the meaning of life becomes, the stronger the professional ineffectiveness of the nurses is. Conclusions. The analyses performed proved that some existential attitudes are predictors of burnout in nurses employed in rural areas. The research results can be applied in the development of prevention and aid programs to enhance the quality of nurses’ personal and professional performance.

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of occupational burnout in social services professions. Occupational burnout was first reported in the seventies. Intense civilization changes and increasing demands placed on social services have caused that the psychological costs they incur. At work, doctors, nurses, teachers, emergency workers, police officers and others are becoming more and more significant. Representatives of these professions are exposed to severe stress, which they can not cope with, are permanently tired, exhausted, are less and less satisfied with the work they do. Taking up the fight with such burdens, they distance themselves from the people they help. Over time, their involvement in the profession is getting weaker. They change it or go into premature retirement. These phenomena are commonly called “burnout”.

The constantly growing demand for research in the area of occupational burnout amongst teachers proves that this worrying phenomenon is becoming an international epidemic. Contemporary studies and analyses clearly indicate that it concerns various professional groups, especially teachers – in a very specific way. The author of this publication carried out a survey among pedagogy students in order to examine the state of knowledge on – first of all – the understanding of the ‘teacher’s occupational burnout’ concept, and second of all – the recognition of the causes of such burnout. 68 first and second-year pedagogy students took part in the survey, which, considering their future occupation, increases the value of the research. This publication presents three issues. The first one contains selected concepts of occupational burnout in the human and work relation in light of the literature of world-renowned authorities. The second one is a presentation of students’ knowledge on the understanding of the concept of ‘occupational burnout in the teaching profession’. In this aspect, the vast majority of respondents consider this concept in the context of existential psychology, which treats burnout as a consequence of losing the sense of the profession, and is modelled on the paradigm of stress based on the rules of cognitive social psychology. The third issue presents the students’ knowledge on the causes of teachers’ occupational burnout, which have been classified into three areas – individual, interpersonal and organisational, in line with Christin Maslach and Micheal Leiter’s concept. Based on analysis of the survey results, the state of the respondents' current knowledge on occupational burnout and the knowledge of the sources of this syndrome was summarized. Students’ knowledge has the values of scientific knowledge, and the ways of understanding the problem and the variety of indicated sources prove students’ analytical skills and rational thinking.
Stale rosnące zapotrzebowanie na badania w obszarze wypalenia zawodowego nauczycieli dowodzi, że to niepokojące zjawisko staje się międzynarodową epidemią. Współczesne opracowania i analizy wyraźnie pokazują, że dotyczy ono różnych grup zawodowych, a w tym w wyjątkowy sposób dotyka nauczycieli. Autorka publikacji przeprowadziła badania sondażowe wśród studentów pedagogiki w celu zbadania stanu wiedzy na temat: po pierwsze - rozumienia pojęcia „wypalenie zawodowe nauczyciela”; po drugie - rozpoznania przyczyn tegoż wypalenia. Sondażem objęto 68 studentów I i II roku pedagogiki, co z perspektywy ich przyszłego zawodu dodaje badaniom szczególnego waloru. Publikacja ujmuje trzy zagadnienia. Pierwsze zawiera wybrane konceptualizacje wypalenia w zawodzie w układzie człowiek – praca w świetle literatury cenionych na świecie autorytetów. Drugie poświęcone jest przedstawieniu wiedzy studentów na temat rozumienia pojęcia „wypalenie w zawodzie nauczyciela”. W tym aspekcie zdecydowana większość respondentów ujmuje to pojęcie w ramach psychologii egzystencjalnej, traktującej wypalenie jako wynik utraty poczucia sensu wykonywanej profesji, a także wzoruje się na paradygmacie stresu opartego na prawidłowościach społecznej psychologii poznawczej. Trzecie zagadnienie prezentuje wiedzę studentów na temat przyczyn wypalenia zawodowego nauczycieli, które zostały zaszeregowane w ramy koncepcji C. Maslach i M. Leiter w trzech płaszczyznach: indywidualnej, interpersonalnej oraz organizacyjnej. Na podstawie analizy wyników sondażu dokonano podsumowania stanu potocznej wiedzy respondentów na temat wypalenia w zawodzie oraz znajomości źródeł zaistnienia tego syndromu. Wiedza studentów posiada walory wiedzy naukowej, a nakreślone sposoby rozumienia problemu oraz różnorodność wskazywanych źródeł dowodzą o ich zdolnościach analitycznych i racjonalnym myśleniu.

Celem prezentowanego tekstu było przeanalizowanie wybranej literatury psychologicznej i pedagogicznej na temat wypalenia zawodowego nauczycieli i mniej znanego w opracowaniach naukowych wypalenia szkolnego uczniów. Analiza i interpretacja różnych koncepcji naukowych pozwoliła dostrzec podobieństwa i różnice w istocie, przejawach, przyczynach i skutkach omawianego zjawiska. Ponadto dała okazję do namysłu nad sposobami wsparcia dla obu grup dotkniętych syndromem wypalenia.
This text analyzes selected psychological and pedagogical literatureon professional burnout of teachers and the lesser-known scholarly burnout of pupils.The analysis of theoretical assumptions and the results of empirical studies made itpossible to indicate similarities and differences in the essence, manifestations, causesand effects of the phenomenon. In addition, it provided an opportunity to thinkabout ways to support both groups affected by burnout syndrome.

Artykuł przedstawia współczesną koncepcję procesu wypalenia zawodowego oraz czynniki determinujące jego powstawanie. Zawód nauczyciela ze względu na konieczność budowania interakcji społecznych wymaga wielu umiejętności, nazywanych zasobami osobistymi. Ich brak może być predyktorem wypalenia zawodowego. Ważnymi zasobami osobistymi są: wewnętrzne poczucie kontroli, umiejętność twórczego myślenia, budowanie relacji osobistych, dających wsparcie społeczne oraz twardość. Profilaktyka syndromu wypalenia zawodowego polega na rozwijaniu tych umiejętności, pozwalających efektywnie radzić sobie w trudnych sytuacjach.
The article presents the modern concept of the process of burnout and the factors determining its formation. The teaching profession, because of the need to build social interaction, requires many skills, called personal resources. Their absence may be a predictor of burnout. Important personal resources are: internal locus of control, creative thinking, building personal relationships, giving social support and hardness. Prevention of burnout syndrome means developing these skills, enabling to cope with difficult situations more effectively.

Teacher professional activity, its quality and work efficiency are conditioned by social changes and educational reforms. The following question guides this analysis: What is the impact of professional burnout and professional satisfaction on the development of teachers’ professional career? The analysis of scientific literature was selected for the theoretical explanation of the research problem as well as a quantitative research method was selected for the empirical research. The indicators on the questionnaire scales provided an opportunity to determine the links between Lithuanian teachers’ professional burnout and vocational satisfaction according to different stress dimensions. Statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS 23. The results of theoretical and empirical research made it possible to establish the main factors affecting teachers’ professional career:1) significantly reduced ability to work, productivity, lack of work-life balance and self-control at work (professional burnout factors); 2) personal fulfilment and self-realisation and wishing to contribute to social well-being (professional satisfaction factors).

Research on the relationship between sense of coherence according to Aaron Antonovsky’ theory of the sense of coherence and process of professional burning out is situated in the field of personal resources engaged in coping with organizational stress in helping proffessions. Two methods were used: The Maslach Burnout Inventory for educators and The scale of Sense of Coherence (SOC) by Antonovsky. MBI allows to measure three components of burn-out syndrome: emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and the lack of personal accomplishment. SOC investigates three components of sense of coherence: sense of comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfullness. Statistical analysis of results was proceeded (analysis of correlations, variance and regression). Obtained results point on significant dependence of susceptibility for professional burning out (particularly emotional exhaustion) from components of sense of coherence. However the most interesting are results concerning the dependency between typological dynamics of coherence and professional burn-out.

Objectives: The present study was designed to examine the links between empathy, emotional labor (both surface and deep acting), and emotional exhaustion as well as determine if emotional labor mediates the relationship between empathy and emotional exhaustion in teachers. It was assumed that emotional labor can take two opposite directions (positive mood induction and negative mood induction). Thus, the additional aim of the study was to analyze the mediating role of mood regulation strategies in the relationship between empathy and emotional exhaustion. Materials and Methods: A sample of 168 teachers from Łódź and its surroundings completed a set of questionnaires: Emotional Labor Scale; Mood Regulation Scales, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and Empathic Sensitivity Scale. Results: The results provided mixed support for the hypotheses indicating that both types of emotional labor, negative mood induction and emotional exhaustion were positively intercorrelated. Moreover, deep acting was a significant mediator in the relationship between empathy and emotional exhaustion. The analyzed link was also mediated by negative mood induction, whereas positive mood induction did not emerge as a significant mediator. Conclusions: The study provided insight into the role of empathy and emotional labor in the development of teacher burnout. It also confirmed that deep acting and negative mood induction mediate the relationship between empathy and emotional exhaustion in teachers.

Objectives: Recently in Poland as a result of the high rate of aging population and high rates of morbidity, a growing demand for the physiotherapist profession is observed. The results of this study can be used to formulate principles for better organization of physiotherapist's workplace in order to prevent occurrence of burnout. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of gender on satisfaction with life and burnout among active physiotherapists. Material and Methods: The survey was anonymous and voluntary, and involved a group of 200 active physiotherapists working in health care units and educational centers in Poland. The study group was selected randomly and incidentally. Each respondent received a demographic data sheet and a set of self-rating questionnaires (Life Satisfaction Questionnaire, Burnout Scale Inventory). Results: Burnout among men decreased along with increasing satisfaction with one's work and occupation, friends, relatives and acquaintances, sexuality, and increased due to greater satisfaction with one's housing status. Burnout among women decreased along with increasing satisfaction with one's health, free time and friends, relatives and acquaintances, and increased due to work at a setting other than a health care unit or educational center. Statistical analysis failed to reveal any significant differences with regard to the BSI domains and with regard to the overall burnout index as well as with regard to the assessment of satisfaction with life between female and male physiotherapists. Conclusions: Satisfaction with children, marriage and partnership, with one's work and occupation, interactions with friends, relatives and acquaintances and sexuality may contribute to reduction of burnout among men. Women who are satisfied with their children, family, health, free time and contacts with friends, relatives and acquaintances are less prone to burnout. Weak financial situation among women and deficiency of free time among men can induce burnout. Improving staff happiness may contribute to decreasing burnout.

Introduction and objective. Numerous studies have found that doctors are exposed to stress and burnout at work. In consequence, these processes lead to a decrease in the quality of life. The study aimed to determine whether professional burnout, understood as a cognitive existential process, is related to stress at work and if any of the four dimensions of burnout are its predictor. The study also analyzed relations between organizational-professional and non-professional-social factors and burnout and stress at work. Materials and method. 318 doctors (210 women, 108 men), aged 27 – 8, participated in the study. Link Burnout Questionnaire (LBQ) was used to measure burnout, and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) to measure the variable describing the current level of stress. Results. Occupational burnout is related to stress. Two of its symptoms: exhaustion and lack of a sense of professional effectiveness, are important predictors for the sense of stress experienced by the examined group of doctors. The individuals who are in a partner relationship (but not marriage) experienced a stronger sense of non-professional effectiveness than those who were single. Being in an informal relationship is related to the level of stress and lack of a sense of professional effectiveness. The level of stress, as well as all burnout indicators, are connected with the function of a team leader and having passion. The frequency of taking leave and using social networks is related to the level of stress and burnout. Conclusions. Problems related to burnout in doctors, and therefore people professionally involved in helping and treating, must not be underestimated, as evidenced by the results of the presented study Professional burnout of doctors leads to somatic and psychological problems. Doctors suffering from occupational burnout need support and psychological assistance the same as any other professional group.

When looking at the phenomenon of occupational burnout from a broad perspective, it appears as a serious problem for many environments. However, in the case of healthcare services, it should be considered an absolute priority, especially in the conditions of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. First of all, it is about the huge costs of both healthcare providers, patients and their families, as well as the entire healthcare system. The purpose of this publication is to provide basic information and systematize knowledge on burnout of medical workers in the initial period of COVID-19.

Nie bez znaczenia pozostaje jego wpływ na zdrowie fizyczne oraz efektywność i zaangażowanie w pracę. Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza pojęcia wypalenia zawodowego, jego przyczyny, objawy oraz próba ustalenia profilaktyki zjawiska, w przypadku którego należy wykorzystać wszystkie możliwe strategie, pomagające nauczycielom przezwyciężyć ten stan. Ważne stają się również działania dotyczące poszukiwania różnych źródeł wsparcia społecznego, rozwoju nauczycielskich umiejętności rozpoznawania sygnałów wskazujących na wyczerpanie emocjonalne, które jest jednym z pierwszych objawów wypalenia zawodowego. Należy dążyć do wypracowania skutecznych metod przezwyciężania stresu zawodowego, wzmacniania samooceny nauczycieli oraz kreowanie ich pozytywnego wizerunku w społeczeństwie.
Burnout is a factor that effectively interferes with the performance of tasks resulting from the teacher’s professional function. Its impact on physical health as well as efficiency and commitment to work is not without significance. The subject of this article is an analysis of the concept of burnout, its causes, symptoms and an attempt to determine the prevention of this phenomenon, for which all possible strategies should be used to help teachers overcome this condition. Also important are activities related to the search for various sources of social support, the development of teachers’ skills to recognize signals indicating emotional exhaustion, which is one of the first symptoms of burnout. Efforts should be made to develop effective methods of overcoming professional stress, strengthening teachers’ self-esteem and creating a positive image of them in the society.

Introduction. The nature of a nurse’s work in hospital wards makes the nurse exposed to various stress provoking factors that contribute to the emergence of the burnout phenomenon. This situation occurs due to prolonged stress and ineffective coping with overloads at work. Burnout is defined a as condition characterized by frustration and exhaustion appearing in people who take intensive care of others devoting so much energy, which results in the loss of energy and motivation to continue working with the previous intensity and commitment. The model of professional burnout syndrome is a three-stage process and includes emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced sense of personal accomplishment. As a result of burnout there occurs the loss of professional commitment and decrease of satisfaction with the job which leads to a reduction in the quality and effectiveness of medical care provided. Therefore, actions are taken to prevent this phenomenon in the work environment, not only because of its effects on health and the effectiveness of work but also because of the safety and welfare of patients. Aim. The aim of this study was to determine and investigate the effect of environmental conditions on the level of the phenomenon of burnout among nurses at hospital wards. Material and methods. The study was carried out in 2013, in a group of 70 nurses working in the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Wloclawek in 4 wards. The study was performed by means of diagnostic survey with the use of a questionnaire of our own design. Results. The dominant group of those surveyed in terms of age were nurses aged from 41to 50 years with long years of service ranging from 21 to 30 years and with the education at the level of the secondary medical school. A more numerous group consisted of nurses with shift system of work. The results of the research refer to the analysis of the level of burnout among nurses in terms of the type of the hospital ward. Conclusions. 1. The nature of the work of nurses in hospital wards varies the level of the phenomenon of professional burnout syndrome. Higher levels of burnout occurs in surgical wards as compared to conservative wards. 2. The work of nurses in multi-shift system of work causes a higher level of burnout than single shift system. 3. Nurses having a low sense of professional satisfaction represent a higher level of burnout. 4. Nurses know and are able to identify the symptoms of the phenomenon of burnout, as well as the ways of coping with stress and preventing its negative effects.
Wstęp. Charakter pracy pielęgniarki w oddziałach szpitalnych powoduje, że pielęgniarka narażona jest na działanie różnych czynników stresogennych przyczyniających się do powstania zjawiska wypalenia zawodowego. Sytuacja ta występuje z powodu długotrwałego stresu i nieskutecznego radzenia sobie z przeciążeniami zawodowymi. Mianem wypalenia zawodowego określany jest stan charakteryzujący się frustracją i wyczerpaniem, pojawiający się u osób, które w pracy intensywnie zajmują się innymi poświęcając temu wiele energii tak, że dochodzi do utraty sił i motywacji do kontynuowania pracy z dotychczasową intensywnością i zaangażowaniem. Model zespołu wypalenia zawodowego jest trójstopniowy i obejmuje wyczerpanie emocjonalne, depersonalizację oraz obniżone poczucie dokonań osobistych. Wskutek wypalenia zawodowego następuje utrata zaangażowania zawodowego i obniżenie satysfakcji zawodowej co prowadzi do obniżenia jakości i efektywności świadczonej opieki medycznej. W związku z tym podejmowane są działania zapobiegające temu zjawisku w środowisku pracy nie tylko ze względu na jego skutki zdrowotne i wydajność pracy ale także ze względu na bezpieczeństwo i dobro podopiecznych. Cel. Celem pracy było określenie i zbadanie wpływu warunków środowiska pracy na poziom zjawiska wypalenia zawodowego wśród pielęgniarek oddziałów szpitalnych. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w 2013 roku, w grupie 70 pielęgniarek zatrudnionych w Wojewódzkim Szpitalu Specjalistycznym we Włocławku w 4 oddziałach szpitalnych. Badania wykonano metodą sondażu diagnostycznego z użyciem kwestionariusza ankiety własnej konstrukcji. Wyniki. Dominującą grupą osób badanych pod względem wieku były pielęgniarki od 41 do 50 roku życia z długim stażem pracy od 21 do 30 lat i o wykształceniu na poziomie średniej szkoły medycznej. Bardziej liczną grupę stanowiły pielęgniarki ze zmianowym charakterem pracy. Wyniki badań dotyczą analizy poziomu wypalenia zawodowego wśród pielęgniarek pod względem rodzaju oddziału szpitalnego. Wnioski: 1.Charakter pracy pielęgniarek w oddziałach szpitalnych różnicuje poziom zjawiska zespołu wypalenia zawodowego. Wyższy poziom wypalenia zawodowego występuje w oddziałach zabiegowych w porównaniu z oddziałami zachowawczymi. 2. Praca pielęgniarek w systemie wielozmianowym powoduje wystąpienie wyższego poziomu wypalenia zawodowego niż praca jednozmianowa. 3. Pielęgniarki mające niskie poczucie satysfakcji zawodowej prezentują wyższy poziom wypalenia zawodowego. 4. Pielęgniarki znają i potrafią identyfikować symptomy zjawiska wypalenia zawodowego, jak również sposoby radzenia sobie ze stresem i przeciwdziałania jego ujemnym skutkom.

In their daily work, medical professionals often encounter emotionally and mentally challenging situations, such as sudden health deterioration or death of their patients. The concern to ensure the highest possible level of healthcare and meet all the standards despite the limitations that come with working under the pressure of time, the interactions with other individuals, the physical burden and stress, as well as with the (sometimes limited) support from superiors and lack of satisfaction with salary may, as a result, translate into a higher risk of burnout. Research indicates a potential effectiveness of coaching with respect to medical personnel. However, there are no publications available concerning nurse-oriented coaching, which would be intended to reduce the risk of burnout in this professional group. The objective of this paper is to present coaching as a method that makes it possible to reduce the risk related to burnout in medical professionals.

One of the professions whose representatives are mostly exposed to professional burnout is teaching. This article is dedicated to the problem of professional burnout among Polish teachers of state schools after the reform in the Polish system of education when gymnasiums (junior high schools) were introduced. A group of primary school, junior high school and high school teachers are analyzed in terms of three dimensions of burnout: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced sense of personal accomplishment.

Prezentowany artykuł zajął się problemem wypalenia zawodowego, przedstawił charakterystykę zjawiska, jego przyczyny, skutki, oraz metody profilaktyki i przeciwdziałania zjawisku. Kwestia wypalenia zawodowego jest powszechna, ponieważ dosięga coraz szersze rzesze pracowników. Nasilenie tego problemu może budzić niepokój, gdyż niesie za sobą wiele negatywnych skutków, między innymi: wpływa na stan zdrowia, bezpieczeństwo innych oraz na rozwój osobowości, na funkcjonowanie jednostki w społeczeństwie i na przebieg kariery zawodowej. Może prowadzić w konsekwencji do dużych strat ponoszonych przez przedsiębiorstwa, pracodawców i samych pracowników. W naszym kraju coraz częściej słyszy się o potrzebie przeciwdziałania wypaleniu zawodowego, powstają różnorodne programy prewencji, a także placówki profilaktyczne.
The presented article dealt with the problem of the professional burnout, presented characteristics of the phenomenon, his causes, effects, and methods of the prevention and the counteraction for phenomenon. The issue of the professional burnout is universal, since is reaching more and more wide crowds of employees. Increasing this problem can be a matter of concern, because is bringing a lot of adverse effects, among others: affects the medical condition, safety other and to the development of the personality, for functioning of the individual in the society and for a career. He can lead in consequence to heavy losses incurred by enterprises, employers and very employees. They in our country more and more often hear about the need of the counteraction for professional burnout, diverse programs of the prevention, as well as preventive institutions are formed.

The aim of the article is to broaden the knowledge about the mutual relationship between work engagement and professional burnout. In the psychological literature, a lively discussion between the position that these are opposite poles of one dimension and the position that both dimensions are independent has not yet been clearly concluded. The article focuses on the analysis of the causes of both phenomena. It was assumed that one-dimensionality means that the same elements of the work situation affect each of the states but in an opposite way. The research was conducted using standardized questionnaires (AWLS, LBQ, and UWES) on a group of 128 teachers from different types of schools. Statistical analyses relying on regression analysis indicated different sources of each phenomenon, which supports the position of independence of both constructs.

Methodology: Data collected from 416 Turkish workers employed at public institutions in Turkey were included in the analyses to identify the effects of psychological capital on burnout by using two different types of scales (burnout and psychological capital scales) into a single questionnaire form with Likert-type response scale. Beside the Reliability Analysis, different statistical valuation methods –such as regression and correlation analyses– have also been used. Findings: The results of analyses conducted on the sample of 416 Turkish workers reveal that statis tically significant relationships appear between self-efficacy and depersonalization, hope and low personal accomplishment, optimism and emotional exhaustion, optimism and depersonalization. Optimism is negatively related to emotional exhaustion and depersonalization while positively and insignificantly related to low personal accomplishment. Both self-efficacy and optimism are signifi cantly effective in explaining depersonalization. Hope positively and significantly contributes to explain the low personal accomplishment level of employees. On the other hand, optimism negatively and significantly contributes to emotional exhaustion. Implications: As found in the results of this research, optimism will decrease emotional exhaustion. Resilient people can more easily adapt to changes in life. Organizations may focus not only on improv ing organizational structure but also foregrounding workers’ positive personality traits and healthy psychological capital systems. Value: This research which emphasizes the effects of psychological capital on burnout levels of em- ployees is as valuable as others in relevant literature with different research results which are more valuable than the other. null

Teachers, including physical education (PE) teachers, are at risk of burning out in their work. The consequences of this syndrome have a negative impact on the teacher themselves and on their students. Therefore it is very important to identify factors that may prevent its occurrence. Self-efficacy is considered one such factor. The aim of the study was to determine if self-efficacy specific to PE teachers is related to their burnout. The study was conducted using a survey method, with the use of the Physical Education Teaching Efficacy Scale [PETES] and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. A total of 401 PE teachers were surveyed. PE teachers turned out to be rather moderately burnt out, except for one dimension - a reduced sense of personal accomplishments - which in almost the whole sample reached high values. Regression analyses conducted for all three dimensions of burnout were significant, explaining from 4% up to 10% of the variance. The dimension of accomplishments was positively predicted by two kinds of self-efficacy: applying scientific knowledge in teaching PE, and teaching students with special needs. Emotional exhaustion was significantly and negatively predicted by assessment efficacy, and using technology efficacy, and positively by accommodating skill level differences of efficacy. Finally, depersonalization was negatively predicted by instructional efficacy.

Bringing issues of the stress up in the profession of the police officer and his negative consequences manifesting itself in the form of the professional burnout syndrome, one should objectively state that in the world a long time ago this phenomenon was already noticed, his influence on the psychophysical condition of officers was noticed, and hence to their professional effectiveness. The article is presenting the description of the close relationship, occurring between stress factors appearing at the work of police officers and coming into existence of the professional burnout syndrome.

Undoubtedly, serving as a police officer is associated with a high level of occupational stress. The stressfulness of this profession, which keeps increasing every year, results from several reasons, of which the most important ones include frequent participation in difficult and sometimes dramatic situations, endangering one’s own life and the lives of others, making quick decisions, bearing the burden of a potentially unjustified use of weapons, and exposure to trauma and other traumatic experiences of other people. The high level of stress related to the profession of a police officer is also associated with other factors, such as low wages, shifts, or paperwork. This paper looks at the notion and consequences of burnout among police officers on the example of the Krakow Constabulary. The study rests on a detailed survey of 110 officers based on the application of the ANOVA method of analysis of variance.

The aim of the study was to establish: 1) the relationship between stress at work and burnout syndrome in group of police officers, 2) what is the level of burnout depending on the level of perceived stress at work, 3) predictors of burnout syndrome in policemen. 277 police officers were examined. The mean of age was: 35 years. The Perceived Job Stress Characteristics Questionnaire and Maslach Burnout Inventory were used in the study. Positive relationship between stress at work and emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and negative between stress and level of personal accomplishment was revealed. Sense of work overload and lack of rewards appeared predictors of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Lack of support and sense of work overload were predictors of sense of personal accomplishment.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between Big-Five personality traits, perceived self-efficacy (GSES) and dimensions of occupational burnout in accordance with Christina Maslach’s three-factor burnout model (emotional burnout, depersonalization, perceived lack of own accomplishments). Data collected among 271 teachers (82% female) aged 20–68 confirmed findings from previous research that four personality traits (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness) are correlated with burnout and that they are significant predictors for all dimensions of burnout. In addition, it was shown that GSES plays a moderating role as a buffer that protects people with high levels of neuroticism from a sense of lack of own accomplishments. It was also found that GSES plays a mediating role for the relationship between Extraversion, Conscientiousness and Neuroticism and perceived lack of own accomplishments and that it is a suppressor for the relationship of neuroticism with emotional exhaustion. The results are discussed in the context of personality theories and their possible applications.

The purpose of the research was: (1) to establish the relationship between work engagement, occupational burnout, and positive orientation; (2) to examine whether positive orientation mediates the relationship between work engagement and occupational burnout. The study involved teachers (N = 106) of grades 1–6 of primary school and grades 1–3 of middle school. As expected, work engagement correlated negatively with burnout, and positive orientation correlated positively with work engagement and negatively with burnout, also mediating the relationship between these variables.

Nowadays job burnout is concerned to be a serious problem not only in the individual but also in the social dimension. Extensive research point out that it is a common and, at the same time, strongly escalating issue, which in particular concerns representatives of social services’ workers. Especially affected are teachers, doctors, nurses, police people, rescue workers, psychotherapist, so the ones who are professionally involved with commitment to others and close interaction with them. Undoubtedly such kind of job could become a source of satisfaction and fulfillment, however, at the same time, it exposes to bearing high psychological costs, especially in the situations connected with high expectations, going beyond one’s possibilities. In this article, given the burning issue, which is teachers’ job burnout in modern education, the authors presented key theoretical conceptions and empirical researches of prominent representatives who work on this topic.
Współcześnie wypalenie zawodowe uważane jest za bardzo poważny problem i to zarówno w wymiarze indywidualnym, jaki i społecznym. Obszerne badania wskazują, że jest wszechobecnym i jednocześnie mocno nasilającym się zjawiskiem, które w szczególności dotyka przedstawicieli zawodów społecznych. Dotkliwie doświadczają go nauczyciele, lekarze, pielęgniarki, policjanci, ratownicy medyczni, psychoterapeuci, czyli ci, dla których istotę profesjonalnego działania stanowi zaangażowana, bliska interakcja z drugim człowiekiem. Bez wątpienia tego rodzaju praca może stać się źródłem satysfakcji i spełnienia, jednakże równocześnie naraża na ponoszenie wysokich kosztów psychologicznych, zwłaszcza w sytuacjach związanych z dużymi wymaganiami przekraczającymi możliwości danej jednostki. W niniejszym artykule, zważywszy na palący problem jaki we współczesnej edukacji stanowi zawodowe wypalanie się nauczycieli, zaprezentowano kluczowe teoretyczne koncepcje oraz empiryczne badania czołowych naukowców zajmujących się tą problematyką.

Professional burnout is one of the significant factors affecting the productivity of the workforce. This has become more common during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the decrease in the psychological safety of employees. Working from home can also negatively affect work-life balance, leading to burnout. Undetected and untreated burnout leads to a decrease in worker productivity and eventually depression and other psychological problems. It is important to create and monitor working conditions to prevent professional burnout. Preventing burnout is always easier to achieve than treating the damaging symptoms. This paper will examine the factors contributing to professional burnout as well as some strategies for mitigating professional burnout. The article identifies the factors of occupational burnout after the COVID 19 pandemic based on the experiences of employees from Poland and the USA. The aim of the work is to indicate the first results of research in the field of occupational burnout, which are conducted on the basis of surveys. The questionnaire summary was prepared according to the model of research on burnout in relation to the pandemic situation. The presented results concern research for both production and service companies. And they are the basis for recognizing the factors responsible for occupational burnout for these employees.
Wypalenie zawodowe jest jednym z istotnych czynników wpływających na produktywność siły roboczej. Pojęcie to stało się bardziej powszechne ze względu na czas pandemii COVID-19, co miało bezpośredni związek ze spadkiem bezpieczeństwa psychicznego pracowników. Praca w domu może również negatywnie wpływać na równowagę między życiem zawodowym a prywatnym, co stanowi podstawowy czynnik prowadzący do wypalenia zawodowego. Niewykryte i nieleczone wypalenie prowadzi do spadku produktywności pracowników, a ostatecznie do depresji i innych problemów psychologicznych. Ważne jest tworzenie i monitorowanie warunków pracy, aby zapobiec wypaleniu zawodowemu. Zapobieganie wypaleniu jest zawsze łatwiejsze do realizacji niż leczenie szkodliwych objawów. W niniejszym artykule zostaną zbadane czynniki przyczyniające się do wypalenia zawodowego, a także niektóre strategie łagodzenia wypalenia zawodowego. W artykule dokonano identyfikacji czynników wypalenia zawodowego po pandemii COVID 19 na bazie doświadczeń pracowników z Polski i USA.

Wstęp. Występowanie zjawiska wypalenia zawodowego ma charakter wielowymiarowy i dotyczy różnych grup zawodowych i specjalności. Pielęgniarki to grupa zawodowa szczególnie zagrożona wypaleniem zawodowym, które wiąże się ze specyficznymi obciążeniami typowymi dla tego zawodu. Obciążenia te niosą za sobą duży potencjał negatywnych oddziaływań na psychiczną i fizyczną sferę funkcjonowania personelu pielęgniarskiego. Cel. Celem pracy była ocena poziomu wypalenia zawodowego pielęgniarek pracujących na różnych oddziałach szpitalnych. Materiał i metoda. Badaniami objęto 150 osobową grupę pielęgniarek pracujących w szpitalu w okresie od 6.01.2020 roku do 10.03.2020 roku. W badaniach posłużono się kwestionariuszem ankiety własnej liczącym 21 pytań i Kwestionariuszem Wypalenia Zawodowego MBI Ch. Maslach. Wyniki. Analiza statystyczna nie wykazała istotnej zależności pomiędzy miejscem pracy ankietowanych a ich poziomem wypalenia zawodowego w depersonalizacji. Poziom wypalenia w podskali poczucia osiągnięć osobistych u wszystkich pielęgniarek/pielęgniarzy kształtował się na średnim poziomie. Specyfika oddziału i specyficzne dla niej problemy nie miały istotnego wpływu na poziom wypalenia. Poziom wypalenia wzrastał wraz z wiekiem i stażem pracy, ale wśród początkujących pielęgniarek widoczne były objawy wypalenia zawodowego. Większość badanych pielęgniarek/pielęgniarzy uważała swoją pracę za stresującą, co miało duży wpływ na występowanie wypalenia zawodowego. Głównym determinantem stresu były dla nich przepracowanie oraz nieadekwatne do pracy wynagradzanie. Badania nie wykazały istotnego wpływu „ciężkości” oddziału, na którym pracowali respondenci jako czynnika determinującego stres. Pielęgniarki/pielęgniarze byli często przepracowani, doświadczali silnego stresu, mimo to cechowali się ogromnym przywiązaniem do zawodu i nie deklarowali chęci jego zmiany. Wnioski. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że pielęgniarki pracujące w szpitalu należały do grupy o średnim poziomie wypalenia zawodowego. Wśród badanych dominowały objawy emocjonalnego wyczerpania, szczególnie u pielęgniarek pracujących w oddziałach o dużym stopniu ciężkości.
Introduction. The occurrence of the phenomenon of occupational burnout is multidimensional and concerns various professional groups and specialties. Nurses are a professional group particularly at risk of burnout, which is associated with specific burdens typical for this profession. These burdens carry a high potential for negative impacts on the mental and physical sphere of functioning of the nursing staff. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the level of occupational burnout of nurses working in various hospital departments. Material and methods. The study included a group of 150 nurses working in the hospital in the period from January 6, 2020 to March 10, 2020. The study used a self-questionnaire consisting of 21 questions and the MBI Ch. Maslach. Results. Statistical analysis did not show a significant relationship between the respondents’ workplace and their level of occupational burnout in depersonalization. The level of burnout in the subscale of sense of personal achievement in all nurses is average. The specifics of the ward and its specific problems do not significantly affect the level of burnout. The level of burnout increases with age and seniority, but symptoms of burnout are already visible among novice nurses. Most of the surveyed nurses consider their work stressful, which has a large impact on the occurrence of occupational burnout. The main determinant of stress for them is overwork and inadequate remuneration for work. The research did not show a significant influence of the “heaviness” of the department where the respondents worked as a factor determining stress. Nurses are often overworked, experience strong stress, yet they are highly attached to the profession and do not declare the will to change it. Conclusions. The conducted research has shown that the nurses working hospital belong to the group with an average level of occupational burnout. Symptoms of emotional exhaustion dominate among the respondents, especially among nurses working in departments with a high degree of severity.

Purpose. To verify the relationship between stress indicators and the age and years of service of military firefighters from the fire rescue corps of the metropolitan area of the state of Sao Paulo. Methods. Forty military firefighters with the mean age of 37.9 ± 5.4 years, from the 1st, 2nd and 8th fire brigades of the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo participated in this study. All underwent clinical, physical and psychological evaluations to verify the relationship between the age and years of service with the variables of levels of stress (tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue, confusion and total stress) on workdays and on days off. Results. On workdays, the mean scores for tension, depression, fatigue and stress were overall higher compared to those on days off. The older the firefighter, the higher the levels of stress, depression, anger and total stress. The more years of service, the greater the depression and anger. Conclusions. The levels of stress were high on workdays. Chronological age and years of service influenced the increase in the scores of stress.

Introduction and objective. A nationwide survey, carried out in Poland in 2013, showed that 42% of an examined group of doctors reported occupational burnout syndrome (OBS). The phenomenon of OBS among medical personnel shows a relationship with perceived stress scale (PSS) scores. The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of OBS in a group of Polish doctors, and the relationship with selected risk factors and personal resources. Materials and method. A cross-sectional study using quantitative methodology was used with the application of a questionnaire method and correlation design. Questionnaires were administered to 318 doctors (42 different specialties) working in medical facilities in Poland. All participants in the study completed two standardized questionnaires: Link Burnout Questionnaire (LBQ), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and responded to the questions on a proprietary questionnaire. ANOVA variance analysis and analysis of regression was performed. Results. The results of the measurement of four aspects of occupational burnout: psychophysical exhaustion (PE), commitment to relationships with patients (CP), effectiveness in performed work (EW), and existential expectations (EE), were in the medium and high levels range. Every second medical doctor who participated in the research declared a high degree of occupational burnout in each of the aspects of OBS. The high level of PSS scores, the large number of duties per month, the short work experience (years of employment) and the low number of holiday leaves, were the predictors of occupational burnout in the group of doctors taking part in the study. Conclusions. The prevalence of the signs of OBS among Polish doctors is consistent with the results of research in other countries. Failures in the interventions taken to reduce stress seem to co-exist with the severity of signs of burnout.

Background. The paper deals with the problem of burnout among the anaesthesiologists of the Western Ukraine region and its causative factors. Burnout is characterized by mental and physical exhaustion owing to prolonged emotional stress. Material and methods. 105 anaesthesiologists were questioned as to the causes of job-related stress and their personal attitude to the job based on the Maslach Burnout Questionnaire. Questionnaire survey findings were compared in relation to the doctors’ practical experience. Results. Burnout symptoms were found to occur in 82% of anaesthesiologists with practical experience less than 5 years, and in 84% of doctors with practical experience above 20 years. These groups revealed high values of emotional burnout on the Maslach scale. Anaesthesiologists with 5-20 years of work experience revealed moderate levels of emotional burnout. High level of depersonalization was found in those with 5-20 years of work experience. For doctors who had less than 5 years and more than 20 years of work experience, depersonalization level was moderate. Conclusions. The group of anaesthesiologists with more than 20 years of work experience had the highest values of professional relationship reduction. The lowest value of this component of burnout was found in the young doctors with work experience of less than 5 years. About 80% of the doctors pointed out working intensity and insufficient salary as the main causes of work-related stress.
Wprowadzenie. Artykuł przedstawia problem wypalenia zawodowego wśród anestezjologów zachodniej Ukrainy oraz czynniki przyczyniające się do powstawania tego zjawiska. Zespół wypalenia zawodowego charakteryzuje się fizycznym i psychicznym wyczerpaniem wskutek chronicznego napięcia emocjonalnego. Materiał i metody. W badaniu wzięło udział 105 anestezjologów, którzy odpowiadali na pytania dotyczące stresu związanego z pracą oraz ich postawy wobec pracy z wykorzystaniem kwestionariusza wypalenia zawodowego Christiny Maslach (MBI). Wyniki badań porównano w oparciu o doświadczenie zawodowe lekarzy. Wyniki. Objawy zespołu wypalenia zawodowego rozpoznano u 82% anestezjologów pracujących w zawodzie krócej niż 5 lat oraz u 84% lekarzy tej specjalności z ponad dwudziestoletnim stażem pracy. Obie grupy cechował wysoki poziom wyczerpania emocjonalnego zgodnie z wynikami na skali MBI (Maslach Burnout Inventory). Anestezjolodzy ze stażem pracy od 5 do 20 lat wykazują umiarkowany poziom wyczerpania emocjonalnego. Wysoki poziom depersonalizacji stwierdzono u lekarzy ze stażem pracy od 5 do 20 lat, natomiast pracujących w zawodzie krócej niż 5 lat oraz dłużej niż 20 lat cechuje umiarkowany poziom depersonalizacji. Wnioski. Grupę anestezjologów z ponad dwudziestoletnim stażem pracy cechuje najbardziej obniżone zadowolenie z osiągnięć zawodowych. Z kolei ci, którzy pracują w zawodzie najkrócej, mniej niż 5 lat, są najbardziej zadowoleni ze swoich zawodowych osiągnięć. Około 80% anestezjologów jako główne przyczyny stresu zawodowego wskazuje zbyt dużą intensywność pracy oraz zbyt niskie zarobki.

This study aimed to examine the relationship of academic burnout and academic stress with academic self-efficacy among graduate students. 307 graduate students at the University of Sistan and Baluchestan (140 female and 167 male students) were selected as a sample using the stratified random sampling method. The subjects were evaluated by questionnaires on academic burnout, academic stress, and academic self-efficacy. Data was analyzed using one-sample t-test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and simultaneous regression analysis. Results revealed that academic burnout was significantly related to academic self-efficacy among the students, in the way that an increase in academic burnout among the students led to a decrease in their academic self-efficacy. Moreover, academic stress was significantly related to academic self-efficacy, in the way that an increase in academic stress among the students led to a decrease in their self-efficacy.

This study addresses the question how students’ engagement and burnout are related to academic achievement the grade point average and the number of passed exams. The study involved 205 students. Multiple regression analysis indicated that burnout is direct significant predictor of grade point average, but the engagement is not. Relation between students’ engagement and the grade point average was mediated by level of burnout. Further analysis revealed that students who have passed all the exams in the first term were characterized by lower level of burnout than students who have not passed all the exams in the first term. However, students from both groups did not differ, in the level of study engagement. The results indicate that high academic achievement is related to the lack of a burnout rather than the presence of engagement. Results also show that the grade point average and the number of passed exams are poor indicators of the level of students’ engagement.

The article presents the risk of occupational burnout observed in health care, as well as possibilities of prevention in this regard. Its authors used their knowledge and experience obtained during the implementation of the international Time2Grow project financed from the European Social Fund. The project was dedicated to developing a burnout prevention model mainly in the area of broadly understood health care. The project was implemented in the Polish-Belgian-Finnish partnership, thanks to which it provided great opportunities to benefit from good European practices. The article presents the results of quantitative primary research carried out on Poland in the group of nurses and midwives, as well as selected results of quantitative and qualitative research conducted in Finland on a group of practicing nurses caring for elderly people.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. The aim of this study was to determine the dependence between the quality of the caregiver-patient relationship and the psychological costs the caregiver bears during the caregiving period. This study encompassed 292 caregivers (104 partners, 117 children and 71 friends or others persons). The study indicated the greatest level of depression and caregiving-related burdens in the spouses group, and the least in the friends/others group. The most important predictor of the level of burden in the caregiving role turned out to be the nature of the caregiver-patient relationship; however, a varying set of the signifi cance of individual elements of this relationship were indicated in different caregiver groups.

The present study aims to scrutinize teacher motivation in relation to two individual level predictors, namely, self-efficacy and burnout among English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers. To this end, 142 English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers were selected from various English language institutes of Mashhad and Tehran, two cities in Iran. They were requested to complete three questionnaires: the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale, and the Work Tasks Motivation Scale for Teachers. The findings obtained via SEM revealed that the proposed model had a good fit with the empirical data. In particular, it was found that job motivation contributed significantly to burnout depletion. It was also revealed that self-efficacy positively predicted job motivation, and burnout negatively influenced self-efficacy. However, self-efficacy surpassed motivation in predicting EFL instructors’ burnout. Results were discussed from both theoretical standpoints as well as previous empirical findings. Finally, implications were presented.

Student engagement and burnout have become the latest focus of attention among researchers and practitioners. This is because both are seen as the main factors connected with the meaningful and purposeful educational activities that lead to high learning outcomes and better physical and mental health. Specifically, burnout decreases, and engagements heightened these characteristics. The aim of the present study was to explore the relationships between alienation, engagement and burnout in an educational context. Additionally, the mediation role of school engagement on the association between alienation and burnout was tested. The study was conducted among 109 early adolescents, aged 13–15 years (NFemale=52). ESSBS (Elementary Student School Burnout Scale), PAI (Alienation Inventory – Short Form) and SSEM (Student School Engagement Scale) were used to measure the levels of burnout, alienation and engagement, respectively. The results indicated that higher alienation was associated with lower engagement and with higher school burnout. Student engagement, productivity and belonging significantly mediated the links between alienation total score, normlessness, powerlessness and school burnout. The path analysis revealed that normlessness significantly predicted student engagement (-.44) and school burnout (-.20). The model explained 31% of the variances for school engagement, and 46% of the variances for school burnout. In conclusion, alienated students – especially those suffering from normlessness – feel disconnected and overwhelmed by school duties. In addition, to diminish the risk of alienation and burnout in a school context of students, educational practitioners should include school engagement (especially belonging and productivity) improvement as one of the most significant protective factors.

Objectives: This paper is a report on the relationship between a sense of coherence (and its components) and work related patterns of behaviour in the group of nurses. Materials and Method: Data were collected by two questionnaires (Antonovsky’s Orientation Questionnaire and Work Related Patterns of Behaviour and Experience Questionnaire) in the sample of 331 volunteer nurses employed in three Polish general care hospitals. Results: The analysis of r-Pearson’s correlation and the linear multiple regression analysis revealed a strong relationship between the sense of coherence and healthy type of behaviour, and a strong negative relationship with a burnout type of behaviour. Conclusion: The results obtained in this study provide grounds for the conclusion that the sense of coherence correlates with healthy functioning at work in the group of nurses.

The paper is aimed at defending the following three claims: (1) that the objective value of privacy may change in time (as its significance is relative to concrete social context); (2) that in the contemporary world, in which the state’s and global corporations power to intrude upon our liberty, especially upon its variety called informational privacy, has become due to technological developments particularly strong, the need for protection of privacy has become especially urgent (given our attachment to the axiological fundamentals of liberal democracies), and therefore its objective value is very high; and (3) that in spite of this high objective value of privacy, it does not correspond to its subjective valuation by the ‘typical’ citizen of contemporary liberal democracies, who, if Byung-Chul Han’s picture of our society as ‘the burnout one’ is correct, has become mentally exhausted by overstimulation and overachievement, and for whom, consequently, the central value has become flatly understood happiness (as material comfort and security), rather than liberty and its constitutive part, which is the right to privacy.

Wypalenie zawodowe to zjawisko manifestujące się poprzez depersonalizację, wyczerpanie emocjonalne oraz zmniejszoną satysfakcję z wykonywanej pracy. Syndrom ten kojarzony jest przede wszystkim z zawodami mającymi charakter pomocowy, do których można zaliczyć pedagoga specjalnego. Doświadczanie objawów wypalenia zawodowego przez pedagogów specjalnych może obniżać nie tylko jakość ich życia, lecz także efektywność oddziaływań względem podopiecznych. Wychodząc od prezentacji zarysu koncepcji wypalenia zawodowego Maslach, podjęto próbę krótkiej charakterystyki specyfiki pracy pedagoga specjalnego oraz wskazania potencjalnych źródeł syndromu wypalenia, przechodząc kolejno do prezentacji wybranych zmiennych socjodemograficznych mogących różnicować jego poziom. Celem podjętych badań była próba określenia poziomu wypalenia zawodowego oraz sprawdzenie, czy wybrane czynniki demograficzno-społeczne, takie jak wiek, rodzaj placówki i jej lokalizacja, różnicują poziom wypalenia zawodowego pedagogów specjalnych. W badaniach wykorzystano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego przy zastosowaniu techniki ankiety. Uzyskane wyniki pozwoliły na stwierdzenie, że pedagodzy specjalni nie doświadczają silnego wypalenia zawodowego oraz wykazują stosunkowo wysokie zaangażowanie osobiste. Przeprowadzone analizy wykazały także, że wiek pedagogów specjalnych różnicuje dwa komponenty wypalenia zawodowego: depersonalizację oraz osobiste zaangażowanie.
Occupational burnout is a phenomenon manifested through depersonalisation, emotional exhaustion and reduced job satisfaction. This syndrome is primarily associated with helping professions, which include the work of a special educator. Experiencing symptoms of burnout by special educators may reduce not only their quality of life, but also the effectiveness of their interventions with clients. Starting from the presentation of Maslach’s concept of occupational burnout, an attempt was made to briefly characterise the specificity of the special educator’s work and to indicate potential sources of the burnout syndrome, moving on to the presentation of selected sociodemographic variables that may differentiate its level. The aim of the research was an attempt to determine the level of occupational burnout and to check whether selected demographic and social factors, such as age, type of institution and its location, differentiate the level of occupational burnout of special educators. The research used a diagnostic survey method with the use of a questionnaire technique. The results showed that special educators do not experience strong occupational burnout and demonstrate relatively high personal commitment. The analyses also showed that the age of special educators differentiates two components of professional burnout: depersonalisation and personal commitment.

Traditionally, most of the research on occupational burnout has focused on organizational stressors, such as workload and time pressure, and has overlooked the emotional nature of customer service work and its effect on burnout. This study was designed to examine the effects of individuals’ affective traits (i.e., dispositional affectivity and emotional intelligence) and affective states (i.e., emotions experienced at work) on burnout. The main hypothesis of this study was that emotional intelligence acts as a moderator in the relationship between negative emotions felt by employees during their interactions with clients and emotional exhaustion. A total of 137 service sector employees rated the extent to which they felt four positive emotions (i.e., contentment, enthusiasm, joy, and liking) and four negative emotions (i.e., irritation, annoyance, antipathy, and anger) while interacting with clients. The results indicated that negative affectivity was signifi cantly associated with higher levels of emotional exhaustion, whereas high positive affectivity showed the reverse pattern. It was also observed that employees who declared greater intensity of negative emotions reported more symptoms of emotional exhaustion. However, as predicted, this effect was observed only among employees who were low in the trait of emotional intelligence. Negative emotions and emotional exhaustion were unrelated among employees who were high in trait emotional intelligence.

This research (N=943) examines the relationship between burnout, work engagement, and organizational factors that play an important role in the strain process (development of burnout), and in the motivational process (work engagement). The aim of the study is to test the relationships of burnout and work engagement, on the one hand, and organizational factors—job demands (workload) and job resources (control, relations with co-workers and superiors, rewards, fairness, and values)—on the other. The results of the analysis call into doubt whether burnout and work engagement are opposite poles of the same dimension, or whether they are independent, though correlated, constructs. Exhaustion and vigour are not the extremes of the same energy dimension, but in the case of cynicism and dedication, the situation is not so clear. It can be said that we are not dealing with the burnout of engagement, but rather with a change in attitude to work (increasing cynicism) on the part of people not suited to their jobs.

The aim of this study was: (1) to examine the relationship between work engagement, occupational burnout and positive orientation; (2) to investigate whether positive orientation mediates the relationship between work engagement and burnout. The study participants were teachers (N = 106) of grades 1–6 of primary schools and grades 1–3 of junior high school. As assumed, work engagement negatively correlated with burnout. Positive orientation was positively associated with engagement and negatively associated with burnout. It also mediated the relationship between engagement and burnout.

Background: Burnout syndrome is a condition which can affect people in a variety of settings and in every period of life. Preliminary studies have focused on adults’ burnout related to occupational hazards. However, in recent years researchers have become increasingly interested in student burnout in the academic and school setting. Objective: The current study analyzed the moderation effect of gender on the association between student engagement, student alienation, and school burnout. Methods: 109 secondary school adolescents completed questionnaires concerning student burnout (ESSB scale), engagement (SSEM scale), and alienation (PAI inventory) scores. Data collection was voluntary and without compensation, and took place during the students’ class hours. Results: The moderation effect of gender was discovered forthe relationship between student burnout and total alienation and anomy scores, but not for engagement indicators. In the female sample, 63% of variance in the ESSB total score was explained by engagement indicators. In the male sample, burnout was connected with lower belonging and productivity and higher social isolation, which explained 32% of the variance in the ESSB score. Conclusion: In sum, the results suggest that disengagement increases the risk of student burnout in both adolescent girls and boys. However, social isolation must also be considered as an important predictor of this syndrome in adolescent boys. Thus, the gender gap should be included in prevention interventions.

Objectives This research paper is the conclusion of the considerations that have emerged as a result of research conducted since 2018. The relationships related to the control of emotions and professional burnout in athletes were investigated on the example of footballers. The study involved men in the age of emerging adulthood (19-30 years old), most of them come from the areas of eastern Poland. Ultimately, the responses of 420 men were taken into account. This work is both theoretical and practical, due to the practical implications added to the article. The research results may contribute to the discussion on the definition and functioning of people professionally involved in sport. Material and methods In order to obtain data on the planned research, an author’s questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), CECS Emotional Control Questionnaire by M. Watson and S. Greer, scale adapted by Z. Juszczyński was used. Additionally, the second part of the study was conducted in the form of structured interviews in order to obtain more detailed information. Results The most important relationships identified on the basis of this study: the higher the level of subjectively perceivedemotionalcontrol in athletes on the example of footballers, the greater the sense of professional achievement and the lower the sense of emotionalexhaustion and depersonalization. Conclusions Important issues for the respondents, which results from structured interviews, are biological regeneration, contact with a trainer, a group of colleagues, a psychologist or pay ingattention to coping with stress, experiencing failure sorinjuries. Also importantis the possibility of career advancement, raise the prestige of their work and appreciation.

Objectives The problem of defining burnout concerns its overlapping effect with other syndromes and disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Additionally, some individual characteristics influence susceptibility to burnout (e.g., neuroticism). Therefore, the question arises whether burnout is or is not a distinct syndrome. The aim of the study is to compare 2 distinct burnout measures by analyzing their connections with organizational and individual variables. Material and methods The study was conducted in the Institute of Applied Psychology at the Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland on a group of employees (N = 100; 40 men; mean age 36.03 years). All participants completed 2 burnout scales: the Maslach Burnout Inventory – General Survey (MBI-GS) and the Link Burnout Questionnaire (LBQ). Organizational and individual factors were controlled with Areas of Worklife Survey, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, NEO Five-Factor Inventory and Beck’s Depression Inventory scales. A structural equation path model was created to quantify the relations between organizational factors and burnout, as well as to control the individual factors of anxiety, neuroticism and depression. Results The results indicate high compatibility between MBI-GS and LBQ on burnout diagnosis. The MBI-GS and LBQ revealed stronger connections with organizational context and individual characteristics, respectively. Depression explains dimensions of exhaustion (MBI-GS, LBQ), sense of disillusion (LBQ), neuroticism–exhaustion (MBI-GS); anxiety explains sense of professional inefficacy (LBQ). Conclusions Besides organizational variables, individual characteristics also play an important role in explaining burnout syndrome. Exploring the 2 burnout models has revealed that depression is an important determinant of exhaustion. Introduction: The main goal of the present study was to analyze the burnout syndrome due to selected personality traits (based on the Cloninger’s psychobiological personality model and positive and negative affectivity) and the degree of mismatch between teachers and their work environment (described in terms of the Model of Worklife Areas). The 2nd goal was to determine if the participants could be classified into different burnout profile groups (clusters) based on their burnout dimension (exhaustion, cynicism and efficacy) scores and whether those groups differed significantly with regard to their personality traits and levels of mismatch between them and the workplace. Material and methods: Individual and contextual factors responsible for burnout were analyzed in a group of 205 Polish teachers who completed a set of questionnaires: Maslach Burnout Inventory – General Scale, Areas of Worklife Scale, Temperament and Character Inventory, and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule. Results: The hierarchical regression analysis revealed that teachers’ efficacy is determined only by personality factors, while exhaustion and cynicism are determined by both individual and organizational variables. The cluster analysis revealed 3 groups (burnout, engaged, ineffective) that varied in the level of all burnout dimensions. Teachers experiencing burnout perceived a higher level of mismatch between themselves and the work environment, compared to the engaged teachers demonstrating better alignment. The engaged teachers were lower on negative affectivity and higher on self-directedness as compared to the burnout group. Conclusions: The study provided insight into the role of individual factors in the development of teacher burnout and engagement. Negative affectivity could be considered as a predisposing risk factor and self-directedness as a protective factor for burnout.

In the process of the effective management of business enterprises and educational institutions, in addition to other factors affecting their success, the involvement of leaders and employees proves to be the critical issue. Enterprises incur a considerable expenditure of time and work on managing and increasing the commitment of their employees, as opposed to the education sector. Effective school management and teacher involvement have a considerable impact on the quality of teachers’ work, and this affects the level of education and upbringing of students. The authors of the study describe the involvement of the work of teachers in four contexts: their professional development, professional advancement system, burnout processes, and the assessment of the effectiveness of their work based their students’ learning. Cooperation within the international Engagement & Beyond project, aiming at developing a practical tool for school management, facilitates the process of understanding the main mechanisms of teacher engagement. The system will automatically adjust the tools for measuring and raising the level of teacher involvement, taking the form both of detailed surveys developed by psychologists and human resource specialists, and materials prepared at the diagnosed motivation level of each participant. School management will be able then to diagnose the level of involvement of employees and create an action plan appropriate to needs at both personal and organisational levels.

The aim of the study was to establish the relationship between stress at work, self-efficacy belief and burnout syndrome in fire-fighters. 100 subjects participated in the study. The mean of age was 34 years. The Perceived Job Stress Characteristics Questionnaire, Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory were used in the study. Positive relationship between stress at work, and two dimensions of burnout syndrome: emotional exhaustion and depersonalization was revealed. Self-efficacy belief appeared factor differentiating level of emotional exhaustion but only in fire-fighters with low level of occupational stress.

Wstęp. Nieodzownym następstwem długotrwałego stresu jest wystąpienie syndromu wypalenia zawodowego. Wypalenie jest procesem, który rozwija się powoli. Pierwsze sygnały nie są dostrzegalne lub też są błędnie interpretowane. Szczególną grupą ryzyka narażoną na wypalenie są przedstawiciele zawodów pracujących dla ludzi i z ludźmi, a więc m.in. nauczyciele, policjanci, lekarze i pielęgniarki. Personel medyczny jest szczególnie narażony na wystąpienie syndromu wypalenia zawodowego, gdyż niejednokrotnie mimo ogromnego zaangażowania w pracę pacjent przegrywa w walce o zdrowie i życie. Cel pracy. Zbadanie poziomu wypalenia zawodowego wśród pielęgniarek/ pielęgniarzy. Materiał i metody. W badaniu wzięło udział 82 respondentów (80 kobiet i 2 mężczyzn). Badanie dotyczyło pielęgniarek/pielęgniarzy zatrudnionych w NZOZ Szpitala Powiatowego w Wieruszowie i zostało przeprowadzone w roku 2012. Do badania wykorzystano ankietę własnego autorstwa, która składała się z 22 pytań. Pytania ankiety zostały pogrupowane tematycznie: pierwsze cztery miały na celu zbadanie poziomu zmęczenia pracą, kolejnych pięć miało sprawdzić występowanie symptomów wypalenia zawodowego. Następne zagadnienia ankiety zdiagnozowały reakcję na stres chroniczny, empatię wobec pacjentów oraz stopień pozytywnego postrzegania pracy. Wyniki. Jednoznacznie o występowaniu wypalenia zawodowego mówi aż 40% pielęgniarek ze średnim stażem zatrudnienia, nieco mniej, bo 35% najmłodszych respondentów, również przyznaje, że mimo niezbyt długiego okresu pracy symptomy wypalenia są już u nich dostrzegalne. Natomiast najdłużej pracujące w zawodzie (tylko w 33%) mówią o wypaleniu zawodowym. Wnioski. Wypalenie zawodowe dosięga głównie pielęgniarki ze stażem pracy od 10 do 19 lat. Najlepiej zaprezentowały się pielęgniarki z najdłuższym stażem pracy. Zasadniczy wpływ na postawę, zaangażowanie i wystąpienie symptomów wypalenia zawodowego ma poczucie skuteczności i wrażenie, że w pracy nie osiągnęło się znaczących rezultatów.
Background. An essential consequence of prolonged stress is an instance of burnout syndrome. Burn-out is a process that develops slowly. The first signs are not visible or are misinterpreted. Special risk group exposed to burn are professionals working for and with people, and so teachers, police officers, doctors and nurses. Medical staff is particularly exposed to the instance of the burnout syndrome, because more often than not, despite a huge involvement in the work of the patient loss in the fight for health and life. Objectives. To examine the level of burnout among nurses. Material and methods. The study involved 82 respondents (80 women and 2 men). The study included nurses working in Hospital in Wieruszów it was carried out in 2012. We used a questionnaire that was developed by authors of this study, which consisted 22 questions. The survey questions have been grouped thematically, and so the first four questions were designed to examine the fatigue level of work, the following five questions were supposed to check the occurrence of symptoms of burnout. Another poll issues diagnosed the chronic stress, empathy to patients and the degree of positive perception of the work. Results. The occurrence of burnout was confirmed by 40% of nurses with the average length of employment, slightly less because 35% of the youngest respondents also confirm the burnout. Only 33% of nurses who are working for a long time in the profession confirm the professional burnout. Conclusions. Burnout reaches mainly nurses with experience lasting from 10 to 19 years. Impact on the attitude, commitment and an instance of the symptoms of burnout has a sense of efficacy and the impression that the work did not get significant results.

Research shows that positive affective displays in customer service interactions are positively related to customers’ perception of overall service quality. Consequently, the way customer service employees manage their feelings is seen as an important aspect of providing their services. In most service contexts, employees are expected to express positive emotions, e.g., be cheerful and suppress negative emotions, such as resentment. Emotional labor is regarded as a type of impression management, because it involves deliberate effort undertaken by service workers in order to adhere to organizational display rules when dealing with customers. Surface acting is an emotional labor strategy and consists of managing observable emotional expression without modifying underlying genuine feelings (service with a fake smile). Research shows that surface acting is positively related to employee burnout. The present study (N=180) was designed to examine the effects of surface acting on emotional exhaustion while controlling for employees’ trait emotional intelligence. The results demonstrated that employees who declared greater use of surface acting during their interactions with customers reported more symptoms of emotional exhaustion. As predicted, however, this effect was observed only among employees low in trait emotional intelligence. The discussion encompasses the implications these results may have for managing emotional expression in public performance that may result in reducing performance anxiety.

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to discuss exposure to stress and the incidence of occupational burnout among oncology nurses. Methods: To study the discussed issue, we analyzed six full-text research papers which were searchable by EBSCO and met all required criteria (words included in the abstract, English publication, size of the study group). Results: Exposure to chronic occupational stress may lead to developing burnout syndrome. Social service professionals are especially affected as they are expected to be emotionally engaged in their jobs, which particularly applies to such health care professionals as nurses, psychologists, police officers and social workers. Because of occupational burnout work efficiency may deteriorate. Oncology nurses are among the most affected nurse groups in terms of exposure to the risk of burnout. Conclusions: Oncology nurses as well as other oncology workers exhibit an increased risk and a higher grade of burnout. Psychological training sessions are available which effectively prevent and alleviate the effects of burnout.

Objectives Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic and the military conflicts in Ukraine suggest that workrelated stressors increased during these crises increases work-related stress reactions. Burnout as a long-term consequence of insufficiently compensated for workloads. The regional prevalence of burnout is particularly high among oncologists. The aim of this study was to assess the current risk of burnout within this group of physicians and to examine gender differences through gender-based analysis. Material and Methods Thirtyseven oncologists (17 men and 20 women aged 46.5±13.6 years [range 26–74 years]) in Kharkiv, Ukraine, participated. The Maslach Burnout Inventory – General Survey (MBI-GS) questionnaire was used to determine the extent of occupational. Results Gender, age, and work experience had no effect on the following results. Women demonstrated higher scores in emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment of the MBI than men. In contrast, men offered higher cynicism scores. The MBI total score was also higher for the male oncologists. Only 1 person of the total sample had risk of burnout. Conclusions The results showed a high prevalence of burnout symptoms among Ukrainian oncologists without gender differences. From occupational health perspective behavioral and behavior-preventive measures are needed for clinics and oncologists to counteract the burnout symptoms, e.g. exhaustion or cyniscism. Further studies are needed here to examine the effectiveness of these measures.

Mobbing behaviours at workplaces and occupational burnout have negative impacts on the working and private lives. Mobbing, irrespective of its intensity, represents one of the most significant stressors and often leads to an irreversible psycho-deterioration of an individual. Overcoming a stressful situation at work requires specifying the methods for coping with stress resulting in job burnout. Job burnout is a complex syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. The aim of these study was to analyze interrelationships between mobbing, coping with stress and job burnout among nurses. The study included 86 nurses of various specialties, who gave their consent to participate in the project, were examined. The average age of the nurses was 37.7 years, and the average job seniority was 12.6 years. The study were conducted in 2019-2020 in hospitals of Southern Poland. and was based on the following instruments: Sociodemographic survey, The Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ), COPE Inventory and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The presented studies showed a statistically significant and consistent relationship between the intensity of perceived mobbing in nurses and the results obtained on the scale of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. A relationship was found between the preference for some specific stress management strategies and job burnout level, also after adjustment for the mobbing intensity, age and seniority of the respondents, thus empirically confirming a multifaceted nature of the unfavorable phenomena related to the work of a nurse. It was found that there is interrelationships between mobbing, coping with stress and job burnout among nurses.

The presented study employed an emotional intelligence framework as a means of explicitly examining the emotional competences and experiencing job satisfaction or burnout. Emotional intelligence is hypothesized to have a positive relationship with higher job satisfaction and negative with burnout. Firstly, the variables are discussed on the basis of existing concepts and research. The second part presents my own research: methodology outline, main data and discussion. Results showed that emotional intelligence was a negative significant predictor (r=0.54, p<0.05) of burnout symptoms, and a positive significant predictor of job satisfaction (r=0.37, p<0.05). The paper concludes with a discussion of the pedagogical implications, teaching professionalization and recommendations for future research.

This paper deals with the burnout syndrome among students in the context of selected demographic characteristics of respondents, frequented level of study, satisfaction with the study, frequented study program, study performance and the vision for their future careers. The study aims to identify the possible predictors of the burnout syndrome among the students and identify the risk groups of students. Altogether 350 students from the Faculty of Education participated in the research, and the SBI (School Burnout Inventory) questionnaire was used to measure the burnout syndrome. The main findings include the rate of school burnout, with almost 18% of students exhibiting a high level. Using the method of classification trees, variables such as age and the overall satisfaction rate with the study were identified as predictors on the “Cynicism” subscale; grade average, age and field of study on the “Inadequacy” subscale, and no predictor was identified on the “Emotional Exhaustion” subscale. These results were complemented by qualitative interviews with the students and a teacher training specialist.

Introduction: The contact which occurs between a medical professional and a patient involves the occurrence of phenomena concerning the control of emotions, called emotional labour. The aim of the paper was to review specialist literature relating to emotional labour present in medical occupations. Material and method: With the use of EBSCO, Medline, ScienceDirect, Ovid MEDLINE databases and the PubMed search engine, relevant English-language full text articles published in 2010– 2017 were selected. Results: Sixty-two articles were selected that complied with the assumed criteria for the description of the issue. The articles concerned four thematic groups: emotional labour occurrence in various medical professions, the intrapersonal aspects of emotional labour, the interpersonal and organisational aspects of emotional labour and the negative consequences of emotional labour. Conclusions: The number of review and source articles confirming the presence of emotional labour in medical professions is growing year by year. In the health care system, emotional labour is still not a widely acknowledged phenomenon, with hardly any specialist training courses aimed at employees, and few organisational changes that would favour constructive methods of copying with the negative consequences of emotional labour.
Wstęp: W trakcie kontaktu pracownika medycznego z pacjentem zachodzą zjawiska związane z regulacją emocji nazywane pracą emocjonalną. Celem artykułu był przegląd literatury fachowej dotyczącej pracy emocjonalnej występującej w zawodach medycznych. Materiał i metoda: Za pomocą baz danych EBSCO, Medline, ScienceDirect, Ovid MEDLINE oraz wyszukiwarki PubMed wybrano artykuły anglojęzyczne i pełnotekstowe opublikowane w latach 2010–2017. Wyniki: Wybrano 62 artykuły spełniające założone kryteria do opisu omawianego zagadnienia. Artykuły dotyczyły czterech grup tematycznych: występowania pracy emocjonalnej w różnych zawodach medycznych, intrapersonalnych aspektów pracy emocjonalnej, interpersonalnych i organizacyjnych aspektów pracy emocjonalnej oraz negatywnych jej następstw. Wnioski: Rokrocznie rośnie liczba artykułów przeglądowych i źródłowych potwierdzających występowanie pracy emocjonalnej w zawodach medycznych. Praca emocjonalna w służbie zdrowia jest zjawiskiem nadal zbyt mało upowszechnionym, brakuje specjalistycznych kursów adresowanych do pracowników oraz zmian organizacyjnych sprzyjających konstruktywnym metodom radzenia sobie z negatywnymi jej następstwami.

The objective of this article is to investigate gender differences in the level of professional burnout among male and female Gestalt and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapists according to the length of professional experience as a covariate. The study was conducted on 200 participants: 100 Gestalt psychotherapists and 100 cognitive-behavioral psychotherapists. The results show a positive relationship between the length of professional experience and the level of burnout in the whole group of psychotherapists. Additionally, it has been shown that the level of burnout in the male psychotherapists’ group was significantly higher than the intensity of symptoms in the female group. The difference in the intensity of burnout symptoms between the Gestalt therapists and cognitive behavioral therapists was not statistically significant.

Celem artykułu jest zbadanie międzypłciowych różnic w zakresie poziomu objawów wypalenia zawodowego u psychoterapeutów i psychoterapeutek nurtu Gestalt i nurtu poznawczo-behawioralnego z uwzględnieniem długości stażu zawodowego psychoterapeutów jako współzmiennej. W badaniu wzięła udział grupa 200 psychoterapeutów, w tym 100 z podejścia Gestalt i 100 z podejścia poznawczo-behawioralnego. Wyniki badań wskazują, że istnieje dodatni związek między długością stażu zawodowego psychoterapeutów a poziomem wypalenia zawodowego w całej grupie zbadanych psychoterapeutów. Dodatkowo wykazano, że ogólny poziom wypalenia zawodowego w całej grupie mężczyzn psychoterapeutów jest istotnie wyższy niż nasilenie objawów wypalenia wśród wszystkich kobiet terapeutek. Nie uzyskano natomiast istotnych statystycznie różnic w nasileniu objawów wypalenia zawodowego między terapeutami i terapeutkami z nurtu Gestalt oraz nurtu poznawczo-behawioralnego.

The aim of this study was to examine whether the relationship between the ratio of job-related positive to negative emotions (positivity ratio) and job burnout is best described as linear or curvilinear. Participants were 89 police officers (12% women) and 86 firefighters. The positivity ratio was evaluated using the Job-related Affective Well-being Scale (Van Katwyk, Fox, Spector, & Kelloway, 2000). Exhaustion and disengagement, two components of job burnout, were measured using the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (Demerouti, Mostert, & Bakker, 2010). The results of regression analysis revealed that curvilinear relationships between the positivity ratio and two components of job burnout appeared to better fit the data than linear relationships. The relationship between the positivity ratio and exhaustion was curvilinear with a curve point at around 2.1. A similar curvilinear relationship, but with a lower curve point, i.e., around 1.8, was observed for disengagement. It seems that beyond certain values there may be hidden costs of maintaining positive emotions at work. Also, the unequal curve points for subscales suggest that different dimensions of work-related functioning are variously prone to such costs.

Stress in the workplace, personal resources and professional burnout concern many workers in the contemporary world. These are common problems also among two groups of musicians: teaching musician and non-teaching musicians. The purpose of the study was to establish the dependence between occupational stress and burnout syndrome in these groups. The studied groups consisted of 94 musicians. The Perceived Job Stress Questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, The Resiliency Assessment Scale were used in this study. The data obtained revealed significant differentiation in a level of stress in the workplace among teaching musicians and non-teaching musicians. Teaching musicians differs in comparison with non-teaching musicians in general level of stress and four its factors: psychical balance of work, lack of rewards, social contacts and uncertainty at work. The data obtained revealed significant intensity of stress feeling at work in evaluated group. However, there are no significant differences in personal resources. To conclude: higher intensity of occupational stress is connected with the greater intensification of burnout syndrome and lower intensification of sense of personal achievements in investigated group of teaching musicians.

Background A paramedic is a person providing health services in a state of sudden threat to life or health. This profession is one of the most difficult and responsible, and the appearance of SARS-CoV-2 has made working in the healthcare system an incredible challenge. The aim of the study was to analyze the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the psychological condition of paramedics. Material and Methods The research material was a database developed from a questionnaire administered to 300 active paramedics. Respondents answered questions about their subjective feelings and questions related to their experiences as paramedics during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results More than half of the respondents were infected with the SARS-CoV-2 and the majority contracted it at work. The survey showed that 11% of the respondents felt very high stress, 38.4% high and 32% moderate. Research has shown that very high, high and moderate levels of stress were experienced more often by paramedics in the 31–40 age group, and little or no stress in the 20–30 age group and paramedics with the longest professional experience less frequently declared experiencing stress at a very high or high level and less frequently experienced burnout in relation to paramedics working in the profession of 1–5 or 6–10 years. Conclusions The results of a study showed that performing professional duties during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic may have influenced paramedics’ perceptions of their psychological condition, including subjective feelings of stress levels, social exclusion, or burnout. Past studies indicate that a number of environmental and psychological factors positively predict the perpetration of cyber-aggression. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the moderation mediating effect of problematic cyber-activities (FB addiction, phubbing) and culture (Japanese vs. West European) on the association between student burnout and cyber-aggression behaviours among the university student population. In the current studies 171 West European (83% Females, age M = 23.16, SD = 5.46) and 120 Japanese (50% Females, age M = 21.95, SD = 1.62) students. The highest levels of academic dissatisfaction, phubbing, and cyber–aggression in FB-addicted students were found. The phubbing mediated the association between student burnout and cyber-aggression behaviours, but the results for FB addiction in simple mediation analysis were insignificant. Furthermore, FB addiction and culture were significant moderators of phubbing and cyber-aggression behaviours.

The association between problematic internet use and school burnout among adolescents so far has not gained sufficient attention. Only a few studies have been conducted about social media overuse and burnout syndrome in an educational context. The main goals of the current study were (1) to examine the mediation role of Facebook (FB) motives on the relationship between academic burnout and FB intrusion, and (2) to test the validity of the cycle. A two-wave study was carried out (measurement at the beginning, Time 1, and at the end of the semester, Time 2) in a sample of 115 university students from Poland. The Maslach Burnout Inventory for Students, the Facebook Intrusion Scale, and the Facebook Motives and Importance Scale were used. The Time 1 burnout indicators did not significantly predict Time 2 FB intrusion, however Time 2 exhaustion and Time 2 Personal importance of FB explained 57% of the variances in Time 2 FB intrusion. Time 1 Personal importance explained 21% of the variances in Time 2 FB intrusion. The predictive capacity of academic burnout on FB intrusion appeared to exist only if we consider the motives and importance of FB. Moreover, the social motives and personal importance of FB appear to be critical to breaking the mutually reinforcing academic burnout–FB intrusion cycle.

The author of the article aims to present in short the results of the empirical verification of R. Kwaśnica’s concept concerning teachers’ professional development. The first part of the article deals with theoretical matters: the understanding of professional development and burnout syndrome. These terms are presented as opposing. Ch. Maslach’s theory on burnout along with Kwaśnica’s views were the basis of the research. The research was done from 2000 – 2002 on the sample of 257 teachers from different schools in different parts of Poland. In the second part of the article chosen results are referred: a diagnosis of professional development phases: preconventional, conventional, postconventional and the states of teachers’ professional activity: expanding from not disturbed activity, through first symptoms of burnout to burnout syndrome. Some essential conclusions can be drawn from the research. First of all, professional development can protect teachers from experiencing burnout, mainly due to growing professional competences, job adaptation and increasing creativity in teachers’ attitude. Moreover, it turned out that, depending on the phase of professional development, different factors stimulate teachers’ growth- these factors must be strengthened to prevent from burnout.

Zjawisko wypalenia zawodowego od samego początku zainteresowań badaczy było przypisywane głównie zawodom związanym z intensywnymi kontaktami z ludźmi, do których niewątpliwie zalicza się zawód nauczyciela. Wyjątkowo stresogenny i obciążający charakter pracy sprawia, że nauczyciele są grupą podwyższonego ryzyka wystąpienia wypalenia zawodowego. Celem przeprowadzonych badań było porównanie poziomu wypalenia zawodowego wśród nauczycieli z Polski i Anglii. W pracy odniesiono się również do przedstawienia w skondensowany sposób regulacji prawnych oraz charakterystyki systemów nauczania w obu krajach, wskazując przede wszystkim różnice występujące w systemach edukacyjnych regulujących pracę nauczycieli. Próbę badawczą stanowiło 103 nauczycieli – 55 pracujących na terenie Anglii oraz 48 pracujących na terenie Polski. Badanie przeprowadzono za pomocą kwestionariusza MBI autorstwa Ch. Maslach. Analiza danych wykazała istotne statystycznie różnice między nauczycielami polskimi i angielskimi w wymiarach depersonalizacji i poczucia osiągnięć, nie stwierdzono istotnych różnic w zakresie wyczerpania emocjonalnego. Nauczyciele pracujący na terenie Anglii mają istotnie niższe od tych pracujących w Polsce poczucie osiągnięć osobistych i charakteryzują się wyższym poziomem depersonalizacji.
Since the very beginning of the researchers’ interest the phenomenon of the occupational burnout has been attributed mainly to the professions connected with intensive contact with people, and the teacher’s profession is undoubtedly one of them. An extremely stress-causing and burdening character of this job makes teachers especially prone to developing the burnout. The aim of the conducted research was to compare the level of the occupational burnout of the Polish and English teachers. What was also presented, in a concise form, were the legal regulations and the characteristics of education systems in both countries, showing primarily the differences present in educational systems regulating teachers’ work. The research sample was 103 teachers – 55 of them working on the territory of England and 48 working on the territory of Poland. The research was carried out by the means of MBI questionnaire by Ch. Maslach. The data analysis pinpointed statistically crucial differences between Polish and English teachers as regards depersonalisation and the sense of achievements and no essential differences were stated as regards the emotional burnout. The teachers working in England have a significantly lower sense of achievements and a higher level of depersonalisation than those in Poland.

The content of the article presents the results of research on the person-organization fit of teachers (N = 66), employed in two municipal high schools in one locality with the Areas of Worklife Survey by Ch. Maslach and M. Leiter in the Polish adaptation of A. Izwantowska and J.F. Terelak. The data from the measurement of the person-organization fit in six areas were interpreted as indicators of the overall experience of professional functioning and predictors of burnout or involvement, in accordance with the structural model of professional burnout. The independent variables were: gender, age, length of professional experience. An important factor in the person-organization fit was the age of the respondents and the work experience. The general level of professional functioning of the surveyed teachers is balanced between occupational burnout and involvement.
Treść artykułu przedstawia wyniki badań dopasowania organizacyjnego nauczycieli (N = 66) zatrudnionych w dwu gminnych szkołach średnich w jednej miejscowości Kwestionariuszem Obszary Życia Zawodowego Ch. Maslach i M. Leitera w polskiej adaptacji A. Izwantowskiej i J.F. Terelaka. Dane z pomiaru dopasowania organizacyjnego w sześciu obszarach zostały zinterpretowane jako wskaźniki całościowego doświadczenia funkcjonowania zawodowego oraz predyktory wypalenia zawodowego bądź zaangażowania zgodnie ze strukturalnym modelem wypalenia zawodowego. Zmiennymi niezależnymi były: płeć, wiek, długość stażu zawodowego. Istotnym czynnikiem dopasowania organizacyjnego okazały się wiek badanych i staż pracy. Ogólny poziom funkcjonowania zawodowego badanych nauczycieli ma charakter zrównoważony między wypaleniem zawodowym a zaangażowaniem.

Opis:
Background. Providing care to patients with low function agility in the home environment becomes a burden and leads to the worsening of the informal caregiver’s quality of life. Objectives. Aim of the research was to assess the quality of life of informal caregivers in the context of their burden linked to the care provided to chronically ill patients with low function agility in the home environment. Material and methods. Research was conducted in five public healthcare facilities, from September 2016 until February 2017, and included 138 informal caregivers. The WHOQoL-AGE scale was used to assess caregivers’ quality of life, and the COPE Index was employed to assessed caregivers’ burden. Results. According to WHOQoL-AGE, the average value of caregivers’ quality of life was 70.14 points. Caregivers’ burden according to the COPE Index Negative Impact of Care subscale was: M = 11.80; Positive Value of Care subscale: M = 13.71; and in Quality of Support subscale: M = 12.46. Statistical importance was at p ≤ 0.01 for WHOQoL-AGE scale, and the burden according to the COPE Index. Conclusions. Informal caregivers’ quality of life according to the WHOQoL-AGE scale corresponds significantly with caregivers’ burden according to the COPE-Index, in all of the analysed domains. Along with the increase of the negative influence of the care, general quality of life with all its subscales, as well as satisfaction, decreases. Caregivers’ quality of life increases along with the increase of the satisfaction connected to the provided care, and with receiving support from informal and formal healthcare

Hobfoll´s conservation of resources theory and burnout among prison service Since the 70's of the previous century, the phenomenon of professional burnout is interested in an increasing group of researchers around the world. There is a lot of empirical evidence that burnout is a serious threat to mental health and the ability of workers to work. The aim of the conducted study was to find an answer to the question of whether there is a relationship between losses and gains personal resources among prison service and determining which of the resources gained or lost remain in relation to individual components of occupational burnout. The research sample comprised 98 employees of the Prison Service from the Warmian-Masurian, Podlasie, and Pomeranian Voivodships and Mazowieckie. The following research tools were used in the study: Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS) and the Profit and Loss Self-Assessment Questionnaire (based on the theory of Stevan Hobfoll). Data analysis showed that losses of hedonistic and vital resources correlate negatively with all burnout scales, and profits with cynicism. Internal resource gains depend on exhaustion and cynicism. Family resources turned out to be in relation to cynicism. Gains of power and prestige are positively related to all dimensions of occupational burnout. Economic resource gains remain dependent on a sense of achievement.

Purpose: To examine the impacts of burnout that has in health-related quality of life (QOL) in nursing staff in Greece. The association of social support with burnout and QOL is also investigated. Materials and methods: Individuals working in Mental and General Hospitals in the broader area of Athens participated in this study (N.139). The measurement tools include a) the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), b) the SF-36 Health Survey and c. the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Burnout and QOL are expected to be related to the evaluation of social environment. Results: The results indicated the impacts that burnout has on quality of life and the positive effect of social support for nursing professionals in the levels of burnout. Conclusions: There is an association between burnout, quality of life and social support. Social support and socio-demographic factors appear to affect the levels of burnout to Psychiatric and General Hospital.

The presented study examined the relationship between teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and their experience of burnout. Its participants were 230 schoolteachers from fourteen Slovenian primary schools. The Questionnaire of Teacher Pedagogical Beliefs and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey were applied. The findings suggest pedagogical beliefs as predictors of teacher burnout dimensions. Teachers’ negative pedagogical beliefs about students’ behavior and discipline maintenance are related to a greater experience of emotional exhaustion whilst negative beliefs about teachers’ trust in students and the role and responsibility of the teacher are related to a greater experience of depersonalization and decreases in personal accomplishment.

School burnout is defined as a reaction to experiencing chronic stress resulting from educational failures of previously strongly engaged students. This leads to psychological discomfort, physical and psychological exhaustion, as well as withdrawal. The syndrome contains three components: emotional exhaustion (the pupil experiences exhaustion with regard to schoolrelated requirements); cynicism (depersonalisation, characterised by a feeling of detachment from and indifference to tasks imposed on pupils by the school) and a feeling of inadequacy (the pupil feels inadequate with regard to the fulfilment of school requirements). Exhaustion due to school activities has negative impact not only on current functioning, but also on future educational and occupational plans. It causes many problem behaviours (such as truancy, violence, psychoactive substance abuse, delinquency), serious health problems (depression, heart disease, psychosomatic illness). The study investigated the links between school burnout and functioning as a school pupil and the quality of relationships among lower secondary school students.

Objectives Physicians working with palliative patients have a substantial risk of emotional exhaustion because of their daily confrontation with suffering and death. Common concerns include alexithymia, high stress, low perceived social support and a greater burnout risk. This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Balint training in preventing the development of these symptoms in these medical professionals. Material and Methods The design of the study was longitudinal. A group of 69 physicians working with palliative patients from 5 county hospitals in Romania (33 men, 36 women) participated in the study. Out of them, 31 joined and systematically attended a local Balint group whereas the others did not participate in such a group, either during the study or previously. They were given, both at the beginning (2015) and at the end of the study (2017), 4 psychometric instruments assessing alexithymia (Bagby’s Toronto Alexithymia Scale, perceived stress (Cohen and Williamson’s Perceived Stress Scale), social support (Duke-UNC Functional Social Support Questionnaire) and burnout (Maslach Burnout Inventory). A split-plot ANOVA analysis was used for evaluating the significance of Balint groups participation, with gender and age considered as auxiliary variables. Results In the study group, Balint training significantly improved the scores of global burnout (F(1, 64) = 25.104, p < 0.0001), 2 of its components (emotional exhaustion (F(1, 64) = 18.390, p < 0.0001) and depersonalization (F(1, 64) = 10.957, p < 0.002), alexithymia (F(1, 64) = 3.461, p < 0.0001) and perceived social support (F(1, 64) = 57.883, p < 0.0001), but not the scores of perceived stress and low personal accomplishment. Gender had an additional contribution in decreasing alexithymia (F(1, 64) = 7.436, p < 0.009) and increasing perceived social support (F(1, 64) = 15.426, p < 0.0001), with higher effects in men. Conclusions This study points to the potential usefulness of Balint training in addressing alexithymia and burnout, and in improving perceived social support among physicians working with palliative patients. As the Balint method is easily understood and does not require special investments, it could represent a cost-effective instrument of addressing job-related psychological risks.
