Opis:
A study of the Raman scattering in Zn$\text{}_{1-x}$Mg$\text{}_{x}$Se (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (100) GaAs and (111)$\text{}_{Zn}$ ZnTe substrates has been performed. Two kinds of longitudinal optical phonon modes (LO$\text{}_{Zn-Se}$ and LO$\text{}_{Mg-Se}$) were observed under excitation of the Ar$\text{}^{+}$ and Kr$\text{}^{+}$ laser lines at room temperature, whose frequencies and intensities depend characteristically on the Mg content.

Opis:
Recent trends in infrared detectors are towards large, electronically addressed two-dimensional arrays and higher operating temperature. This will lead both to higher performance and to smaller, lighter and more affordable IR systems. Cooling requirements are the main obstacle to the more widespread use of infrared systems based on semiconductor photodetectors, particularly in the civil field. Fundamental limitations to performance of IR photodetectors are due to the statistical nature of generation-recombination processes and resulting noise. Ways to overcome the limitations are discussed including use of the optical immersion and optical resonant cavity. Finally, the progress in a mode of operation is presented, in which the thermal generation of carriers is suppressed by the use of stationary depletion of narrow gap semiconductors. The practical near room temperature narrow gap semiconductor photodetectors are reported. Competitive technologies based on Schottky barrier devices and low dimensional solids are considered briefly.

Opis:
The IR reflection measurements of $MnTe_2$ were performed at room temperature under various pressures. It is observed that the reflectivity increases at the pressure range of 8-25 GPa and becomes almost constant at the higher pressure. The carrier concentrations obtained from the reflectivity spectra at the highest pressure region are the order of $10^{22} cm^{-3}$. Therefore it is concluded that pressure-induced semiconductor-metal transition occurs at the pressure range of 8-25 GPa.

In this work $TlBiTe_2$ were grown by a modified Bridgman technique and examined samples had different lateral dimensions of twins, ranging from 0.1 μm to 1 μm. The average lateral size of the twins seems to affect free carrier concentration and plasma frequency. Infrared spectra were analyzed by two models, the extended Drude model and a generalized empirical model of frequency-dependent damping factor. Increase in size of twins affects the electronic properties and hence plasma reflectivity and free carrier concentration of $TlBiTe_2$.

A study of low energetic modes in the resonance Raman spectra of the organic superconductors α$\text{}_{t}$-(BEDT-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$I$\text{}_{3}$ (T$\text{}_{c}$ = 8 K) and β-(BEDT-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$IAuI (T$\text{}_{c}$ = 4 K) in the temperature range of 1.5-100 K was performed. In both materials, a strong vanishing of low energetic phonon bands (at 30 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ and 40 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ for α$\text{}_{t}$-(BEDT-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$I$\text{}_{3}$ and at 27 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ and 33 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ for β-(BEDT-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$IAuI) below 71 was observed. For the symmetric stretching mode of the I¯$\text{}_{3}$ and the IAuI¯ anion at 120 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ no change below T, was found. In addition, wavelength dependent measurements on α-(BEDT-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$I$\text{}_{3}$ were performed, indicating that the modes around 30 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ are probably librational modes of the BEDT-TTF molecules.

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) is a valuable fruit cultivated in the world as an important plant. There are a lot of industries engaged with the drying, processing, quality control and sorting of tomato. A rapid and reliable measurement of qualitative factors of tomato and its products can be a serious necessity for the producers and industrialists. The objective of this research was to implement SERS as a modern technique to evaluate some qualitative parameters of tomato juice. To prevent the effect of cartenoids and florescence background, the juices were centrifuged. Silver colloid was prepared according to Lee and Meisel method for SERS experiments. The results were compared with the spectra obtained from ordinary spontaneous Raman spectroscopy technique data. Three major bands assigned to carbohydrates in tomato were detected and analyzed. Moreover, a medium band related to proteins could be identified. Comparison of SERS spectra with the normal spontaneous Raman spectra proved that SERS has a privilege in the measurement of carbohydrates and proteins as an effective, rapid and precise technique.

Opis:
This paper presents measurement results of the synchrotron radiation infrared transmission spectrum through YBCO film on MgO substrate at T=20 K temperature. The film's transmission temperature of the superconducting state is T$\text{}_{c}$=80 K. During formation cycle the maximum intensity wavelength varies from 100 μm to 10 μm. Due to spectrum evolution the detector signal that gives synchrotron radiation sample transmission is related to the sample transmission ability, the sensitivity of the detector and synchrotron radiation spectrum via an integral equation. The best agreement with experiment results is achieved for the Eγ=20 meV energy gap value, which corresponds to 2Eγ/kT$\text{}_{c}$=2.9 at T=20 K.

We developed and adequately characterized the triglycine sulfate family crystals doped with specific molar percent of cobalt phosphate, TGS:PCo (9%). The crystals were grown by slow evaporation technique and the growth rates of different crystallographic planes are rather faster in comparison with the plane growth rates of pure TGS crystals. The introduction of $Co^{2+}$ ion as an active optical element to the structure of TGS crystal leads to optimization of some parameters such as optical quality, stability at ambient condition, Curie temperature, stronger Raman peaks, etc. Three new peaks at 460, 620 and 1368 $cm^{-1}$ were observed in the dispersive back scattering Raman spectra of the grown TGS:PCo (9%) crystal in comparison with the pure triglycine sulfate crystal.

The boracites with general formula $M_3B_7O_{13}X$ (M = divalent metal, X = Cl, Br, I), shortly denoted as M-X, are among the first known multiferroic materials. They exhibit a sequence of transitions from the high temperature paraelectric cubic phase to ferroelectric orthorhombic, monoclinic, trigonal phases, and finally to a monoclinic phase at low temperatures, where both ferroelectric and magnetic orders coexist. The lattice dynamics of boracites has been scarcely studied with the Raman spectroscopy, the main problem with non-cubic phases being the coexistence of twin variants with different crystallographic and polarization orientation. In this work, on the example of $Co_3B_7O_{13}Cl (Co-Cl)$, $Co_3B_7O_{13}Br (Co-Br)$ and $Ni_3B_7O_{13}Br (Ni-Br)$ we demonstrate that using the Raman microscopy imaging one can visualize the twin variants, follow their transformation through the crystallographic transitions, obtain Raman spectra from untwinned domains in exact scattering configurations, determine the Raman mode symmetries, and assign Raman lines to definite atomic motions. The effects of structural transitions and elemental substitution are discussed in close comparison with results of ab initio calculations of the phonon structure of the cubic phase.

Nanocrystalline KTP powders are synthesized using a modified Pechini method. The structural and lattice modes of the products are investigated via X-ray diffraction, micro Raman backscattering spectroscopy, UV/vis/NIR and FT-IR transmission spectroscopy. The Debye-Scherrer formula is used to confirm the grain sizes estimated by the scanning electron microscopy slides.

Pentachloropyridine crystals in two polymorphic modifications: tetragonal and monoclinic were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized IR and Raman spectroscopy in 20 to 200 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ region and at different temperatures from melting point down to the liquid nitrogen temperature. The 4 K difference in melting points of both forms indicates the occurrence of monotropy. The spectra were discussed in terms of positional disorder in the studied crystals which often happen to be mixtures of the monoclinic crystal and the L- and D-forms of the tetragonal one. The monotropic transition of the metastable tetragonal crystal into the stable monoclinic one was observed in the Raman spectra and under the polarizing microscope at temperatures ranging from 170 to 185 K and as an anomaly on the differential scanning calorymetry diagram at 193 K.

Systematic measurements by Raman scattering of the frequency and line width of the zone-center optical modes in GaS$\text{}_{0.25}$Se$\text{}_{0.75}$ layered crystal over the temperature range of 10-300 K are carried out. The analysis of temperature dependence of intralayer modes shows that frequency shift and line broadening are successfully modeled by including the contributions from thermal expansion and lattice anharmonicity. The purely anharmonic contribution (phonon-phonon coupling) is found to be due to three-phonon processes.

The Raman spectra of TlGa$\text{}_{x}$In$\text{}_{1-x}$S$\text{}_{2}$ layered mixed crystals were studied for a wide range of composition (0≤x≤1) at T=50 K. The effect of crystal disorder on the line width broadening of the Raman-active modes are discussed. The asymmetry in the Raman line shape is analyzed for two interlayer and intralayer modes exhibiting one-mode behavior.

Opis:
$BiFeO_3$ is a multiferroic material showing antiferromagnetic ordering and ferroelectric behavior simultaneously. Here, Mn-doped $BiFeO_3$ nanoparticles were synthesized up to 10% of Mn composition by a sol-gel process. The samples showed high crystallinity with no secondary phase up to 2% of Mn doping. A phonon peak at 1250 $cm^{-1}$ in undoped $BiFeO_3$ showed anomalous intensity enhancement in the magnetically ordered phase below $T_N$ = 643 K due to a spin-phonon coupling. This behavior was less pronounced in the Mn-doped samples, suggesting a suppression of magnetic ordering between $Fe^{3+}$ spins by Mn doping.

$BiFeO_3$ thin films were grown by chemical solution deposition using precursors with different elemental ratios, Bi/Fe = 1.1/1.0, 1.0/1.0 and 1.0/1.1. All the samples consisted of two easily distinguishable components of crystalline and amorphous phases. We have found that the electric properties of $BiFeO_3$ thin films are closely connected to the crystallinity of the films.

Pure copper (99.99), prepared in the sample of square cross-section (10 × 10 $mm^{2}$) and length about 50 mm, was extremely plastically deformed with the repeated application of Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP). ECAP was applied as an effective technique for producing bulk nano-scaled structures. Optical properties of the sample were investigated using Raman spectroscopy. Two types of lines: narrow (with width of ≈ 7 $cm^{-1}$) and wide ( ≈ 40 $cm^{-1}$) are registered. Existence of two types of lines indicates that in the specimen exists nano-sized crystal structures of both Cu and CuO related with three dimensional amorphous boundary spaces, which indicates that plastic deformation of the sample did not lead to total amorphisation of the specimen.

Carbon coatings can possess diamond-like, polymer-like, graphite-like or other properties depending on deposition methods and technological parameters. Structural changes in the polymer-like carbon coatings irradiated by high energy electrons are discussed in the present paper. The polymer-like carbon coatings have been synthesized from $C_2H_2$ gas in the radio frequency dual-plasma reactor using various deposition parameters. Plasma enhancement chemical vapor deposition deposited experimental polymer-like carbon samples were irradiated with high energy electrons in the medical linear accelerator. The investigations of carbon coatings have been carried out using the Fourier-transform infrared, Raman and UV-VIS spectroscopies. Modification of the polymer-like carbon coatings is discussed in relation with radiation induced formation of free radicals and unsaturated bonds along with possible cross-linking processes.

Opis:
The absorption spectrum of $Bi_{12}SiO_{20}:Cu$ is measured in the spectral region 0.195-2.95 eV. The validity of the Urbach rule (2.08-2.95 eV) has been also verified. The photochromic effect of these samples in far IR region is investigated. The energy level diagram of $Cu^{3+}$ cations in Bi-octahedrons is presented.

Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry have been used to characterize Si/Si$\text{}_{0.78}$Ge$\text{}_{0.22}$ superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (001)Si at different substrate temperatures. The results are interpreted to give information on material and interface quality, layer thicknesses, and state of strain. The observed frequencies of zone-folded longitudinal acoustic phonons in a high quality sample agree well with those calculated using Rytov's theory of acoustic vibrations in layered media.

Opis:
The band-gap energy of GaInNAs layers lattice-matched to GaAs substrate and annealed under different temperatures is investigated by photoreflectance spectroscopy. Different nitrogen nearest-neighbor environments of N atom appear in GaInNAs layers due to the post-growth annealing. It leads to an energy-fine structure of the band gap, i.e. well separated photoreflectance resonances related to different nitrogen nearest-neighbor environments (N-Ga$\text{}_{4-m}$In$\text{}_{m}$ (0≤ m≤ 4) short-range-order clusters). The temperature dependence of the band gap E(T) related to different N-Ga$\text{}_{4-m}$In$\text{}_{m}$ clusters is investigated in 10-280 K temperature range, and Varshni and Bose-Einstein parameters for E(T) are determined.

Tetraguanidinium dichloride-sulphate crystal, $[C(NH_2)_3]_4Cl_2SO_4$, abbreviated as $G_4Cl_2SO_4$ was investigated. The vibrational infrared spectra of powdered $G_4Cl_2SO_4$ crystal in Nujol mull were studied in the wide range of temperature, from 298 K to 377 K. This temperature range contains all the phases in the crystal (named III, II, I on heating, respectively). The temperature changes of wavenumbers, centre of gravity, and intensity of the bands were analyzed to clarify the molecular mechanism of the phase transitions. It was shown that in cooling from 377 K to 313 K the phase II is the same as the room temperature phase. Information about hydrogen bonds was obtained. The time dependence of internal vibrations at 356 K was observed and it was connected with slow transition III → II. For more detailed band assignment Raman spectrum at room temperature, at ferroelectric phase was carried out. Theoretical calculations were made based on density functional theory, with the B3LYP method using 6-311 + G(d,p) basic set. Calculated normal vibrational modes of the molecule, their frequencies and intensities were compared with these recorded in experiment. Theoretical description of the molecule including hydrogen bonds were optimized and the bond parameters were obtained. The Mulliken charges population analysis was performed.

Opis:
New heavy metal oxide glasses involving $Sb_2O_3$ have been investigated. By using classical routes (melting-casting), glasses synthesized in silica crucibles were obtained in the combination of ternary systems $Sb_2O_3-M_2CO_3-MoO_3$ (M = Li and K). Characteristic temperatures such as glass transition $T_{g}$, and onset of the crystallization $T_{x}$, have been measured using differential scanning calorimeter. Ultrasonic velocities were measured by using pulse echo method to determine the elastics parameters, such as elastic modules (E, G, K, L). Other physical properties were measured, such as density and optical transmission window in far infrared spectra using KBr pellets. Influence of composition on these physico-chemical properties is discussed and correlated to the glass structure.

We have analyzed the Co influence on the absorption spectra of $(80-x)Sb_2O_3-20Na_2O-xWO_3$ glasses in the Urbach rule region at room temperature. We present the comparison between Co and $WO_3$ manifestation in the spectral region 2.64-3.14 eV. The spectral characteristics of "crystalline" and "glassy" Urbach's rule are also calculated.

$PbI_2$, $BiI_3$, $CdI_2$ and AgI crystalline samples intercalated with pyridine have been studied by Raman spectroscopy. Comparing the Raman spectra of pristine metal iodides with those of intercalated samples we have shown the coexistence, in the host crystalline lattice, of two adsorbed forms: a physisorbed one, featured by weak forces of van der Waals type and a chemisorbed one, involving stronger forces related to an electrostatic interaction. The physisorbed form is consistent with the molecules inserted into the interlayer spaces while the chemisorbed form is represented by the molecules forming coordination complexes with the crystalline lattice cations. The crucial role in the formation of such complexes is played by the lone pair of nitrogen atom belonging to the molecules.

Inelastic neutron scattering infrared and Raman spectra of the crystalline 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene were measured and compared with simulated ones by using the Gaussian 98 and DMol3 programs at density functional theory methods. Application of the double numerical plus polarization basis set for the crystalline state within the local density Perdew and Wang (PWC functionals) approximation quite well reproduces the low frequency bands related to the methyl group librational modes, which are very sensitive to molecular interactions. Infrared spectra for the crystalline sample and $CCl_4$ solution show spectacularly the change of low frequency modes by going from the symmetric $D_{3h}$ molecules in the gas phase to asymmetric ones in the crystal.

Raman scattering measurements on (MnTe)$\text{}_{8}$/(Cd$\text{}_{0.64}$Zn$\text{}_{0.36}$Te)$\text{}_{8}$ multilayer grown by MBE method and on various (MnTe)$\text{}_{n}$/(CdTe)$\text{}_{12}$ multilayers (where n=8,12,16,24) were performed at low temperatures. In the z̅(x,x)z polarization, structures corresponding to folded acoustic phonons were found. In z̅(x,y)z polarization new complex structures were observed in the low-frequency part of Raman scattering spectra. A possible magnetic origin of these structures is discussed.

We have calculated the s- and p-polarized far infrared magnetoplasmon spectra of doped $CdTe-Cd_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te$ multi quantum wells in the presence of a static magnetic field up to 20 T parallel to the surface of the layers using a macroscopic model based on effective medium theory, using a novel approach which gives a good account of the data together with a clear physical interpretation of the various spectral features, such as the free carrier and optical phonon properties. The results show that the transverse optical modes (for the whole composition range, x = 0 to 1) are sensitive and change linearly with respect to the composition parameter. In p-polarized reflectivity the cyclotron resonance experiences a blue shift when the magnetic field strength increases. Also, the analysis of the dielectric tensor function and the Voigt dielectric function is used to determine the carriers' cyclotron effective masses (for both holes and electrons) as a function of composition. Furthermore, a modified random element iso-displacement approach has been extended for the multi layers to analyze the influence of the composition on the optical phonon response in the barrier layer.

In this paper we discuss a possibility of an optical characterization of thin semiconductor epilayers by Raman scattering measurements. As an example zinc blende Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te epilayers (0.66 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy method and investigated by Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction. Information resulting from both methods is compared and discussed.

Opis:
One-magnon excitations in MBE-grown A$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te layers (where A = Cd, Zn, Mg and x>0.7) were investigated by means of the Raman scattering measurements at low temperatures (≈20 K). The composition dependence of the anisotropy energy - as extracted from these measurements - is discussed. Further, the elastic neutron scattering measurements were performed in layers of cubic MnTe, which constitute the end point material of the ternary alloys series. Abundance of variously oriented antiferromagnetic domains in MnTe layers as a function of temperature was studied. We confirm occurrence of a pronounced magnetostriction effect.

Opis:
The work presents experimental results of an in situ investigation of the $OH^{-}$ absorption in pure and MgO-doped $LiNbO_{3}$ crystals during reducing (95% Ar + 5% $H_{2}$) and oxidizing $(O_{2})$ high-temperature treatments in the temperature range from room temperature to 820 K. The absorption spectra measured in situ at high temperatures in reducing/oxidizing atmospheres have been analyzed. The origin of the changes in optical absorption caused by heating of the crystal is discussed in terms of the OH-bonds orientation change.

Opis:
Structures containing magnetic metallic layers attract a lot of attention because of their possible applications in the area of spintronics. The hybrid structures compatible with the Si crystal lattice parameter are of special interest. In this work the short-period Fe/Si multilayers were grown by the sputtering onto (001)-oriented Si substrate and investigated by various techniques. After the deposition, all multilayers were characterized by atomic force microscopy. The goal of the present paper was to determine the chemical composition of thin layer created at the interface in Fe/Si multilayers due to the Fe diffusion into Si, as well as to analyze the phenomena, which take place in this area. The results of the optical characterization by the Raman scattering were correlated with the magnetic properties of investigated structures (determined by means of the Kerr rotation).

Opis:
Investigations of Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) of pyridine adsorbed on the silver electrode of different roughness have been performed. The obtained results indicate that the micro- and the atomic scale roughness influence the intensity of SERS signal. This proves for the electromagnetic and charge transfer origin of the enhancement in the SERS phenomenon.

In this study amorphous hydrogenated carbon films (a-C:H) were formed on Si (111) from an $Ar-C_2H_2$ and $Ar-C_2H_2-H_2$ gas mixtures at 1000 Pa pressure using a plasma jet chemical vapour deposition. It is shown that by varying the $Ar:C_2H_2$ ratio and adding the hydrogen gas in plasma, the structure, surface morphology, growth rate of the coatings, and consequently their optical properties can be controlled.

We have reported the fabrication of MgO core/$SnO_2$ shell nanowires, by a two-step evaporation process. Thermal annealing induced changes in morphology, in which the nanowire surface became rough by the agglomeration of $SnO_2$ shell layers and its crystallinity was enhanced. It was found that three fundamental modes (475, 634, 772 $cm^{-1}$) and an infrared (IR)-active mode (682 $cm^{-1}$) of rutile $SnO_2$ appeared in the Raman spectrum of MgO core/$SnO_2$ shell nanowires. By thermal annealing, the relative intensity of the $A_{2u}$ to the $A_{1g}$ line was reduced, presumably due to the disorder or size effects.

Recently, a precession X-ray study has discovered that ferroelectric $BaTiO_3$ single crystals have a coherent hybrid structure that consists of tetragonal and monoclinic lattices that share the (101) face of the tetragonal [11, 12]. Microscopic observations attest that the single crystal has two kinds of stripes (dark and white regions). Raman spectra of all sides of the cubic crystal have been collected at several scattering configurations. Two kinds of domains have been observed by the Raman measurements within the stripes, which are identified as light and dark spots under the optical microscope. The spectra structures and line widths are strongly affected when the laser direction is parallel to the b-axes and the polarization parallel to the a- or c-axes of the 90° domain (ac-side). It appears that there is a symmetry reduction and disorder, which affects the Raman active phonons. The results are in agreement with the coexistence of the two (tetragonal and monoclinic) lattices.

We have measured the Raman scattering and magnetization of pure and $Fe^{2+}(Fe^{3+})$ doped $CeO_2$ nanopowders at room temperature. The Raman scattering spectra revealed the existence of $CeO_2$ fluorite cubic structure for all investigated samples. The Raman active mode at about 600 $cm^{-1}$, seen in all samples, can be ascribed to the $CeO_2$ intrinsic oxygen vacancies. Additional Raman modes at 720 $cm^{-1}$, 1320 $cm^{-1}$ and 1600 $cm^{-1}$, which appear in the spectra of doped samples, can be assigned to maghemite $(γ-Fe_2O_3)$ cation deficient structure, to $2ω_{LO}$ IR-allowed overtone and two magnon structure, respectively. This implies that our powders are composed of mixed valence states and have defective structure. Presence of oxygen defect states and magnetic ions can be responsible for the observed ferromagnetism at room temperature in both pure and Fe doped samples.

Far-infrared and magnetic properties of Ni doped PbTe ($Z_Ni$ = 1× $10^{19}$ at./$cm^{3}$) single crystal are investigated in a broad range of temperature and magnetic fields. Far-infrared reflection spectra were analyzed using a fitting procedure based on the modified plasmon-two phonon interaction model. Together with the strong plasmon-two longitudinal optical phonon coupling we obtained a local mode of Ni at about 180 $cm^{-1}$. This mode intensity depends on temperature. Magnetic measurements shows that PbTe alloys doped with Ni reveals weak ferromagnetic interaction between magnetic ions.

Two kinds of samples were investigated with micro-Raman spectroscopy. MOS structures having poly-silicon gates with metallic contact were made of Al with addition of 1% Cu. The other type of the sample was Si wafer subjected to surface oxidation. The position of the sample was changed along z-axis in order to maximize the Raman signal coming from different layers of the structure. Two MOS structures were studied, both prepared in the same process, and after that only one was thermally-treated at temperature 400°C. The spectra coming from different layers of the structure were analyzed numerically using Lorentzian profile. The authors want to point out that the measurements of the Raman signal performed through the metallic contact of the poly-silicon gate gave anomalously large signal coming from silicon structure. This effect was observed only for thermally threated sample. This suggest that in the case of thermally-treated structure the signal observed through the metallic contact was magnified by surface-enhanced Raman scattering phenomenon.

Opis:
In this paper we applied the soft-X-ray radiation for generation of point defects, vacancies, and chemical reactions in quartz $(SiO_{2})$, taking into account our earlier made similar experiments with crystal silicon and importance of quartz for applications in many fields. In this case only radiative Auger's effects with electrons and electric dipole of atoms transitions can generate metastable vacancies, point defects, and induce chemical reactions. Usually, for point defects generation doses of gamma rays are used. We measured values of the Bragg reflections of X-rays and calculated mean square deviations of atoms in crystal lattice for defining the dynamics of irradiated point defects. We accomplished infrared measurements for establishing of generated chemical reactions, and conductivity measurements were also done.

Tin dioxide films with variable stoichiometric composition were fabricated by means of dc magnetron sputtering followed by a 2-stage annealing process. The structural and electrical properties of tin dioxide films were investigated by means of the Raman spectroscopy and impedance spectroscopy, respectively. It was found that crystallinity and grain size of tin dioxide films increase with the increasing annealing temperature. The most conductive samples were obtained at the annealing temperature 375°C. Increasing of the impedance of films annealed at higher temperatures is explained by decrease of the concentration of oxygen vacancies.

Opis:
The silver colloids and silver films are known for their signal enhancing properties in Raman spectroscopy. Surface enhanced raman spectroscopy is a very useful tool to detect molecules at low concentration or even single molecules in examined samples. Here we present a study on the preparation of silver colloidal solution and deposition of silver films on mica. The colloidal solutions were examined by two methods: the UV-VIS spectroscopy to determine their optical properties and atomic force microscopy to determine the size of the particles and structure of the deposited films. The crystal violet (tris(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)methylium chloride) solution was used as a test sample for evaluation of enhancing properties of silver colloidal solutions and films. These experiments have shown that both colloidal solutions and films, are efficient surface enhanced raman spectroscopy substrates, therefore they can be used in further studies for enhancement of the Raman signal of biopolymers, f.e. polysaccharides and DNA.

Rubidium manganese hexacyanoferrate exhibits charge transfer phase transition from high temperature phase to low temperature phase at 230 K. This phase transition can also be triggered by light irradiation resonantly inducing charge transfer from $Mn^{2+}$ to $Fe^{3+}$. In the present study, boundary sensitive Raman spectroscopy was performed for $Rb_{0.94}Mn[Fe(CN)_6]_{0.98} \cdot 0.2H_2O$ in both cases of photoinduced and thermal phase transition. Since the frequencies of C ≡ N stretching vibration modes are very sensitive to the valence states of the adjacent metal ions, we can quantify the distribution of not only high and low temperature phase but also boundary configurations from the observed spectra. We obtained the time evolution of the fraction ratios of the valence states from the observed peak areas. In the case of photoinduced situation, the boundary increases up to 15% when high temperature phase diminishes to 55% of the initial fraction. This is quite different from the result in thermal phase transition where the boundary is created only 0.8% at the same high temperature phase fraction value. We conclude that many small domains are preferably created in photoinduced phase transition since the ratio of boundary is large, while large domains grow in thermal phase transition.

Relaxor ferroelectrics $0.2PbSc_{1//2}Nb_{1//2}O_3-0.4PbMg_{1//3}Nb_{2//3}O_3-0.4PbZn_{1//3}Nb_{2//3}O_3$ ceramics were studied by means of the Fourier transform infrared reflection and THz transmission spectroscopy in the temperature range of 20-500 K. On heating from low temperatures, the $A_1$ component of the strongly split $TO_1$ mode softens towards the Burns temperature, but the softening ceases near 400 K, which could be a signature of polar cluster percolation temperature.

Analysis of the relative and absolute Raman intensity is very important and powerful tool which allows to understand and characterize the modifications of the crystal/amorphous structure due to: (i) changes of the symmetry, e.g. substitution of the B site ion by the rare earth/lanthanide one and incorporation of mobile species in the case of high temperature protonic conducting perovskites; (ii) changes of the short/long range order, e.g. existence/disappearance of the nanoregions in the case of $PbMg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}O_{3-x}PbTiO_3$ (PMN-PT) relaxor ferroelectric perovskites; (iii) changes of the nanostructure, e.g. depolymerisation of the Si-O network due to the substitution of the $Si^{4+}$ ions (and associated covalent bonds) by the $M^+$ cations (forming ionic bonds) or by the incorporation of the metal nanoprecipitates in the case of glasses, glazes and enamels.

In this paper, we present room temperature unpolarized Raman scattering spectra of Ni doped PbTe single crystal sample. Crystal of PbTe(Ni) was grown by the Bridgman method. The Ni concentration in the sample used here was 1× $10^{19}$ at./$cm^{3}$. Well resolved peaks appear at about 126, 143, 181, 362 and 724 $cm^{-1}$. The modes at 126 and 143 $cm^{-1}$, which are also observed in other telluride compounds, originate from vibrations in $TeO_2$. We assume that the mode at about 181 $cm^{-1}$ is connected to excitations of a local phonon mode in the vicinity of an impurity atom (donor $Ni^{3+}$ state). Modes at about 362 $cm^{-1}$ and 724 $cm^{-1}$ are the second and fourth harmonic of a local phonon mode, registered here due to multiphonon emission.

Ferromagnetic resonance was employed to study the magnetic anisotropy of the Fe thin film in the MgO/Cu(t$\text{}_{Cu}$)/Fe/Cu system. The Fe film showed strong fourfold cubic anisotropy (H_{K$\text{}_{1}}$ = 2K$\text{}_{1}$/M = 46.15 kA/m) for t$\text{}_{Fe}$ = 23 nm and t$\text{}_{Cu}$ = 0. The spread of the crystallographic axes Δβ = 0.5° was evaluated from the angular dependence of the resonance line width ΔH$\text{}_{pp}$ (4.4 < ΔH$\text{}_{pp}$ < 6.4 kA/m). Such a small mosaicity confirmed the epitaxial growth of the Fe film. The Cu buffer layer destroys this growth of the Fe film which showed only a weak anisotropy.

Raman light scattering with excitation of electron-hole continuum and a phonon is investigated theoretically. The effect of a surface and screening of the electron-photon coupling and of the deformation potential as a result of the Coulomb interaction of the electrons is taken into account. The parameters of the 340 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ resonance line in superconducting YBaCuO are estimated by comparing with experimental data.

Opis:
Optical phonon dispersion for β-HgS was measured by the neutron scattering for the first time. The results confirmed theoretically predicted anomalous behavior of phonon modes in this material, resulting probably from high ionicity of mercury sulphide and large difference of Hg and S atomic mass. Influence of the isotopic effects on the TO-phonon mode for HgSe and HgS is analyzed. The possible observation of such effects in IR reflectivity spectra taken for HgSe at low temperature is discussed.

Intra-impurity transitions of the Mg acceptor in cubic phase GaN were measured with the use of photothermal ionization spectroscopy. Apart from the photoionization band several sharp features were detected, related to internal Mg-acceptor transitions. The transitions were identified with the help of effective-mass model calculations involving light- and heavy-hole as well as spin--orbit split-off bands. Transitions to resonant states, associated with the spin-orbit split-off valence band, were also identified. The determined hole binding energy of the Mg acceptor in zinc-blende GaN is 236±1 meV.

This paper presents a comparative study between the microstructural features of two water-ferrofluids intended for biological applications. In both cases the ferrophase was prepared by auto-catalytic reaction between ferrous and ferric salts and resulted in magnetite and some maghemite precipitates. The difference is given by the stabilizer molecule: tetramethylammonium hydroxide and, respectively, citric acid. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were utilized for ferrophase size investigation. The evidence of short chains and large aggregates was obtained mainly by atomic force microscopy analysis (the tip diameter being equal to 5 nm). Their role in the ferrofluid rheological properties was studied by carrying out comparative measurements of viscosity and surface tension. Complementary investigation of the ferrofluid composition was done by means of IR absorption spectra. The suitability of the prepared ferrofluids for biological goals was proved by their convenient ferrophase diameter as well as by their stability in time.

We propose a method for measuring the thickness of the exfoliated MoSe₂ layers deposited on Si/SiO₂ substrate, based on the reflectance measurements performed with laser light illumination at two different wavelengths: red and green from confocal microscope at room temperature. We demonstrate the correlation between the number of layers in a flake and the value of its relative reflection difference. We applied the transfer matrix method to calculate the reflectivity and verify our experimental results. The approach proposed by us allows for fast and automatic verification of the exfoliated MoSe₂ layers thickness on large areas of the substrate.

We have been studying micro-luminescence of various exfoliated $MoS_{2}$ flakes using a confocal microscope. A crucial issue is to determine thickness of the investigated layer. The common way - using atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy or the Raman spectroscopy - requires moving the sample out from the confocal microscope experimental setup and looking for a particular exfoliated flake hidden among thousands of others. In order to preliminarily determine thickness of investigated layers we have performed a study on optical reflectivity and compared the results with the Raman spectroscopy investigations. In this way we were able to calibrate our experimental setup. Optical measurements are much faster than the Raman spectroscopy and can give a good estimation of $MoS_{2}$ thickness.

Opis:
YVO₄ phosphors with different morphologies were synthesized by trisodium citrate (Na₃cit) surfactant-assisted hydrothermal process. Effects of molar ratio of $\text{cit}^{3-}$ to $Y^{3+}$ and pH value of reaction solution were intensively investigated on the morphologies, structures and luminescence properties of YVO₄ phosphor. The morphologies of the YVO₄ particles can be effectively controlled in strong acidic and strong alkaline environment by affecting the adsorption of $\text{cit}^{3-}$ on the (001) crystal plane of YVO₄. Strong acidic condition resulted into excessive adsorption of $\text{cit}^{3-}$ groups on the YVO₄ phosphor, which annihilated the superior luminescence of YVO₄ phosphors. On the contrary, strong alkaline condition does not result into the adsorption of $\text{cit}^{3-}$ groups. The synthesized YVO₄ phosphor without adsorption of $\text{cit}^{3-}$ groups showed superior luminescence even though the effective control of the morphology in alkaline condition is not so good as in strong acidic condition.

Opis:
Electrospun chitosan nanofibrous substrates are functionalized with silver nanoparticles by reduction of silver from Tollens reagent using glucose. Filling factor is estimated through developed protocol by using analysis of scanning electron microscopy images. Obtained nanocomposite silver-chitosan plasmonic films display reliable surface enhanced Raman scattering signal of rhodamine B with the concentration 10¯⁵ M adsorbed onto the surface of functionalized substrates.

Phonon-phonon interactions were investigated in various nanocrystalline powders like anatase $TiO_{2-δ}$, pure $CeO_{2-δ}$ and ceria doped with Nd(Gd) analyzing temperature dependent Raman spectra of these systems. Phonon confinement model based on size, inhomogeneous strain and anharmonic effects was used to properly describe the evident changes present in the Raman spectra of pure and doped ceria nanocrystalline samples. In small particles of pure and doped ceria nanocrystals, when size effects have minor impact on Raman modes, four phonon anharmonic processes prevail under the three-phonon ones. When nanopowdered particles are grown enough size effects provoke changes of the anharmonic interactions when three-phonon coupling prevails over the four-phonon anharmonic processes. In nanocrystalline anatase $TiO_2$ evident blueshift of the most prominent $E_g$ Raman mode probably originates from dominant four-phonon anharmonic interactions.

Opis:
The crystal structure and paramagnetism in the pyrazinamide containing copper(II) 2-nitrobenzoate single crystal were investigated using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance techniques. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the complex crystallizes in monoclinic system having two molecules in the unit cell. After using curve fitting method to the electron paramagnetic resonance spectra, anisotropic g and hyperfine A tensors were obtained. The local symmetry, spin Hamiltonian parameters, and molecular bonding coefficients of the paramagnetic Cu²⁺ ion were determined. Perturbation approach was applied to the spin Hamiltonian to calculate the g and A values.

Opis:
The infrared transmittance and Raman scattering spectra in $TlGa_xIn_{1-x}S_2$ (0 ≤ x ≤1) layered mixed crystals grown by the Bridgman method were studied in the frequency ranges of 400-2000 and 250-$400 cm^{-1}$, respectively. The bands observed at room temperature in IR transmittance spectra of $TlGa_xIn_{1-x}S_2$ were interpreted in terms of multiphonon absorption processes. The dependences of the frequencies of IR- and Raman-active modes on the composition of $TlGa_xIn_{1-x}S_2$ mixed crystals were also established. The structural characterization of the mixed crystals was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction measurements and compositional dependence of lattice parameters was revealed.

Opis:
Graphene oxide suspension in various solvents was spin coated on metal organic vapor phase epitaxy grown GaN/saphire layers. Samples were characterised using the Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, before and after high temperature treatment. We found that graphene oxide was modifed by high temperature treatment, however a considerable modification was also observed as a result of impinged laser light incident due to the measurements. The Raman spectra were decomposed into two contributions showing different behaviour during the Raman scattering measurements.

We report on the Raman scattering from single-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) deposited on various substrates: Si/SiO₂, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), sapphire, as well as suspended. Room temperature Raman scattering spectra are investigated under both resonant (632.8 nm) and non-resonant (514.5 nm) excitations. A rather weak influence of the substrate on the Raman scattering signal is observed. The most pronounced, although still small, is the effect of h-BN, which manifests itself in the change of energy positions of the E' and A'₁ Raman modes of single-layer MoS₂. We interpret this modification as originating from van der Waals interaction between the MoS₂ and h-BN layers.

We present results of μ-Raman and μ-photoluminescence study of few-layer WS₂ flakes that have been locally thinned down by a focused laser beam. The Raman spectroscopy measurements prove that the investigated flake was locally thinned down to a monolayer. Interestingly, μ-photoluminescence experiments allowed us to observe huge intensity fluctuations at the boundary of laser-thinned region. Similar effects were found at the edges of a WS₂ bilayer flake, which has not been subjected to laser-thinning. The origin of the observed time evolution of the photoluminescence response is discussed in terms of potential fluctuations resulting from light-induced changes of the charge state of defects.

A new water-soluble ionic polyacetylene was synthesized by the acid-catalyzed polymerization of 2-ethynylpyridine using acrylic acid. The polymerization proceeded well to give a high yield of polymer. The acetylenic C ≡ C bond stretching (2110 cm¯¹) and acetylenic ≡ C-H bond stretching (3293 cm¯¹) peaks of 2-ethynylpyridine monomer were not seen in the FT-IR spectrum of polymer. The electro-optical and electrical properties of the ionic polyacetylene were measured and discussed. The resulting polymer showed strong maximum at 513 nm in the UV-Visible absorption, which is corresponding to photon energy of 2.42 eV. The energy gap width of polymer was estimated to be of 2.08 eV. It was observed that the electrochemical process of polymer is reproducible in the potential range of -1.80 to 1.60 V vs Ag/AgNO₃. HOMO and LUMO levels of polymer were 4.85 eV and 2.77 eV, respectively.

Research of a monolayer and a bulk $MoS_2$ is reported. The room temperature Raman spectra of the natural $MoS_2$ crystals for the both resonant (632.8 nm) and the non-resonant (532 nm) excitation are presented. The apparent differences observed in the spectra from the bulk and the one monolayer $MoS_2$ are discussed. In particular, the feature due to a first order scattering involving the LA(M) phonon in the resonance Raman spectrum of the one monolayer $MoS_2$ was observed and explained in terms of the disorder in the natural crystal. The disorder is also documented by the line-shape of the room-temperature photoluminescence spectra observed from both the bulk and the one monolayer $MoS_2$.

Pure and 10 mol% $Fe^{3+}$ doped $CeO_2$ nanocrystals were synthesized by hydrothermal method using two different basic solutions ($NH_4OH$ and NaOH). All the samples were calcinated at 140°C and 200°C. The characterization of crystalline structure, vibrational and optical properties was performed using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The obtained results showed that the Fe-doped samples are solid solutions with different size of nanocrystals, very dependent on the synthesis temperature and type of basic solution. The Raman measurements demonstrated electron molecular vibrational coupling and increase of oxygen vacancy concentration whereas doping provokes a small decrease of optical absorption edge in comparison with pure ceria.

The oxygen isotope effect on the first- and second-order Raman active modes of high-quality La$\text{}_{2-x}$Sr$\text{}_{x}$Cu$\text{}^{16,18}$O$\text{}_{4}$ (80% substitution $\text{}^{16}$O by $\text{}^{18}$O) polycrystalline compounds with x=0.00, 0.015 was investigated at low temperatures. In the second-order Raman scattering several weak and strong peaks were observed and assigned to oxygen atom vibrations. With the isotopic substitution the apex oxygen mode follows quite well the mass harmonic law at all temperatures studied, while the soft mode is anharmonic in the temperature range of 77-180 K and for higher temperatures its anharmonicity is strongly increased. The temperature dependence of the energy of the soft mode for x=0.0 shows also a modification at≈180 K and an abnormal behaviour at≈280 K, which may be related with the transition to the antiferromagnetic phase.

The perovskite lithium lanthanum titanate shows high ionic conductivity at room temperature. Doping the lithium lanthanum titanate by niobium preserves the perovskite structure, which is synthesized by ceramic technology at high temperature (1300°C). The X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy results show that the samples exhibit single phase. AC impedance measurements indicate total conductivity of about $8.93 \times 10^{-4}$ S/cm for composition of x = 0.05 at room temperature. The Raman spectra and cyclic voltammetry results of the compound are also reported.

Opis:
Raman piezospectroscopy of high quality 6H-SiC crystals is presented. The crystals used in experiments were grown by the seeded physical vapor transport method. Uniaxial stress up to 0.9 MPa, obtained using a spring apparatus, was applied along [11-20] and [10-10] directions. It was found that the application of uniaxial stress led to different energy shifts of the observed phonon excitations in the investigated 6H-SiC crystals. The obtained pressure coefficients vary in the range 0.98-5.5 $cm^{-1}$ $GPa^{-1}$ for different transverse optical phonon modes. For longitudinal optic phonon modes pressure coefficients in the range 1.6-3.6 $cm^{-1}$ $GPa^{-1}$ were found. The data obtained could be useful in evaluation of local strain fields in SiC based structures and devices including epitaxial graphene.

High-pressure induced phase transitions in a single crystal of gadolinium molybdate, $Gd_2(MoO_4)_3$ were studied by the Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The amorphization of the sample takes place at about 6 GPa in a mixture of alcohol as a pressure transmitting medium and begins as soon as 3 GPa in argon. In both media, the amorphization is irreversible in the 0-9 GPa investigated pressure range. The joint ab initio and Raman results allowed us to conclude that rotations of $MoO_4$ tetrahedra are the primary structural changes involved in the first phase transition (at about 2 GPa) explaining the softening of the low frequency modes at about 50 $cm^{-1}$. In addition, a progressive distortion of tetrahedra followed by a coordination change (IV-VI) of Mo atoms is observed through the five structural transitions including amorphization. This mechanism based on the steric hindrance of polyhedra is believed to be the most relevant for explaining the amorphization of $Gd_2(MoO_4)_3$.

The simulation of the Raman spectra of nanostructured materials, where the effects of frequency shift and asymmetric broadening of the Raman modes play an important role, can be very useful in systematic characterization of these materials. Use of phonon confinement model for calculating Raman spectra of different nanomaterials is considered both from the viewpoint of different confinement function and the confinement strength, as well as the dimensionality of the confinement model. The phonon dispersion relations and the choice of their approximation are also studied. The influence of particle size distribution on the shape of the calculated spectra is discussed and contributions of Gaussian and asymmetric Gaussian distribution are compared. The effects of average and inhomogeneous strain on the behavior of simulated Raman spectra are also discussed. The results of the phonon confinement model are compared to the experimental spectra of $CeO_2$ and anatase $TiO_2$ nanopowders.

A series of ZnSe single layers having thickness between 30 nm and 1 μm was deposited on c-Si and glass substrates at room substrate temperature. Thermal evaporation of ZnSe powder in high vacuum has been applied. Moreover, $SiO_x$/ZnSe periodic multilayers prepared by the same deposition technique and having ZnSe layer thickness of 2 and 4 nm have been studied. Raman spectra were measured at 295 K, using the 442 nm line of a He-Cd laser as well as different lines of the $Ar^+$ or $Ar^+//Kr^+$ lasers. The observed Raman features have been related to multiple optical phonon (1LO to 4LO) light scattering and connected with the existence of randomly oriented crystalline ZnSe grains in both ZnSe single layers and ZnSe layers of the multilayers. Relatively large line width ( ≈ 15 $cm^{-1}$) of the 1LO band has been observed and related to lattice distortion in the crystalline grains and existence of amorphous phase in the layers thinner than 100 nm. The Raman spectra measured on both ZnSe single layers and $SiO_x$/ZnSe multilayers using the 488 nm line with a gradually increased laser beam power indicate an increased crystallinity at high irradiation levels.

Pure and La-doped titania $(TiO_2)$ nanopowders are synthesized by sol-gel technology. The crystallite sizes determined by X-ray diffraction measurements range from 10 to 15 nm. Dependence of structural and morphological characteristics of nanopowders on synthesis conditions and $La^{3+}$ content is investigated by the Raman spectroscopy. Very intensive modes observed in the Raman spectra of all nanopowder samples are assigned to anatase phase of $TiO_2$. Additional Raman modes of extremely low intensity can be related to the presence of a small amount of brookite amorphous phase in nanopowders, which is in accordance with the results of X-ray diffraction analysis. The particle size distribution in TiO_2 nanopowders was estimated from the low frequency Raman spectra, using the fact that the phonon modes in nanosized $TiO_2$ observed in the low frequency region (ω <40 $cm^{-1}$) can be well described by the elastic continuum model, assuming that nanoparticles are of perfect spherical shape and isotropic. The nanosized particle distribution obtained by this method is used for the calculation of the frequency and shape of the most intensive $E_g$ Raman mode in anatase $TiO_2$ by the phonon confinement model. The calculated broadening of this mode, associated with the particle size distribution, coincides well with the characteristics of $E_g$ mode observed in measured Raman spectra of $TiO_2$ nanopowders. This confirms the Raman spectroscopy method as a powerful tool for determination of particle size distribution in nanosized materials.

Titanium dioxide $(TiO_2)$ nanopowders doped with 0.65, 1, 2, 3 and 4 wt.% of lanthanum ions $(La^{3+})$ were synthesized by sol-gel technology. Dependence of structural and morphological characteristics of nanopowders on $La^{3+}$ content and synthesis conditions is investigated by the Raman spectroscopy. Very intensive modes observed in the Raman spectra of all nanopowder samples are assigned to anatase phase of $TiO_2$. Additional Raman modes of extremely low intensity can be related to the presence of certain amount of highly disordered brookite phase in nanopowders. Dependence of the intensity ratio of the Raman modes which originate from anatase and brookite on doping conditions is specially analyzed. In order to estimate the variation of nanocrystallite size with dopant content, shift and asymmetrical broadening of the most intensive $E_g$ Raman mode of anatase are analyzed by phonon confinement model. The obtained results are compared with the results of X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Special attention is dedicated to the changes in the Raman spectra of pure and La-doped $TiO_2$ nanopowders observed after high temperature treatment.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC), in particular hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films have been formed on various conductive and dielectric materials by plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition $(PI^{3}D)$ processing. Effect of pulse voltage and other process parameters on the film properties was investigated. It was found that for conductive substrates, a low-voltage ( ≈1 kV), high repetition rate pulsing provides better overall film performance comparing to that obtained by applying higher voltages, which is also favourable for conformal treatment of 3D workpieces. However, short 1-2 μs, high-voltage 5-20 kV pulses are required for dielectric workpieces several millimeter thick. Good film adhesion was achieved by forming a Si-containing buffer layer using hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) as a precursor and a low-voltage pulsing. Roughness and wettability of DLC coatings was found to be controlled by varying the bias specs and sample temperature. Very smooth films with average roughness less than 1 Å were prepared at optimised process parameters.

Collective and single-particle spin-flip excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas in a semimagnetic Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te quantum well are observed by resonant Raman scattering. Application of a magnetic field splits the spin-subbands and a spin-polarization is induced in the electron gas. Above some critical field, a collective spin-flip mode, which disperses with in-plane wave vector, dominates the spectra. The energy of this mode is given by the bare Zeeman energy at vanishing wave vector as predicted by Larmor's theorem and its in-plane dispersion is well described by a model of the interacting polarizability of a spin polarized electron gas when both exchange and correlation are taken into account.

Pure titanite is a mineral with chemical composition $CaTiSiO_{5}$. Its structure consists of corner linked $TiO_{6}$-octahedra, $SiO_{4}$-tetrahedra and sevenfold coordinated Ca positions. In nature various impurities like U and Th can be incorporated in the structure showing alpha and beta radiation. On meta-mictization, a process which occurs in nature when a mineral is exposed to radioactive irradiation, strong modifications of the structure are observed. Recoil processes due to alpha radiation change over geological time scales the originally periodically structured material into a quasi-amorphous state with persisting short-range order but destroyed long-range order. We report IR and Raman spectra as well as X-ray diffraction data of meta-mict and heat treated titanite from the Cardiff mine, Canada. IR as well as the Raman modes are strongly broadened in the meta-mict material and sharpen on annealing. The OH-stretching mode at 3486 $cm^{-1}$ indicates strong changes in the local environment of OH in meta-mict titanite. The appearance of the Raman excitations between 620 and 750 $cm^{-1}$ in meta-mict titanite, which in IR spectra are due to Ti-O stretching from $TiO_{6}$ octahedra, indicates the breakdown of the Raman selection rules. This points to the breaking of the octahedral symmetry of $TiO_{6}$ polyhedra.

A short-range force constant model has been applied using normal coordinate analysis to investigate the Raman and the infrared modes in multiferroic $MnWO_4$ having space group P2/c. The calculation of zone centre phonons has been made with eight stretching and seven bending force constants. The calculated Raman and infrared wave numbers are in good agreement with the observed ones. The potential energy distribution has also been investigated for determining the significance of contribution from each force constant toward the Raman and the infrared wave numbers.

Novel architectures for electronics and photonics are expected to be developed using the forthcoming $Si_{1-x}Ge_{x}$ technology. However, in $Si_{1-x}Ge_{x}$-based heterostructures, materials and design issues rely on accurate control of strain and composition of the alloy. The Raman spectroscopy has rapidly emerged as a reliable technique for the quantitative determination of such parameters on a sub-micrometric scale. In this work we present an investigation of the effects of the growth conditions of $Si_{1-x}Ge_{x}$ graded layers on dislocation nucleation and interaction. In particular, we focus on the crucial role the deposition temperature plays in the dislocation kinetics. The analysis of threading dislocation densities is accompanied by a quantitative measurement of the residual strain in $Si_{1-x}Ge_{x}$/Si heterostructures, carried out by means of the Raman scattering. Our approach is effective in studying the physical mechanism governing dislocation multiplication and the sharp transition from a state of brittleness to a state of ductility within a narrow temperature window.

Carbon nanotubes can be obtained from variety of the molecular precursors in chemical vapor deposition processes. The low growth temperatures strongly increase the compatibility of carbon nanotubes growth with current complementary metal-oxide-silicon technology for carbon nanotubes-based electronics. Here, we show the low temperature growth of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in acetylene chemical vapor deposition with Fe-Co/MgO. The catalyst mix was active already at 450°C. The higher temperatures growth (500°C and 550°C) were also tested in order to estimate the best thermal condition in respect of the sample quality (via thermogravimetric analyzer) and the sample relative purity (via resonance Raman spectroscopy). High resolution transmission electron microscope was used to determine the morphology of the samples.

Studies of tissue such as bones and veins often are carried out by means of microscopic and ultrasonographic methods. Therefore studies of changes caused by pathological or physical factors often are limited to morphological level. Application of Raman spectroscopy permits to associate morphological changes and molecular changes. The paper presents preliminary studies of temperature and ionizing radiation effects on Raman spectra of bone and collagen. Furthermore, effects of pathological factors on Raman spectra of human veins had been studied. It was noticed that heating of bone collagen up to 110°C gives the reversible changes in spectra. In the case of γ-irradiation, any effects were observed up to the dose of 1 MGy on mineral component of bone, whereas the influence on collagen was observed for doses higher than 100 kGy. The Raman spectra of varicose vs. normal veins permit to conclude some important changes observed for veins from chronic venous insufficiency patients.

Infrared spectroscopy is probably the oldest spectroscopic method applied to investigate materials and chemico-physical phenomena. Nowadays, infrared spectroscopy represents the characterization technique most applied in the industry and in many technological processes. In the last decades a significant progress has been achieved in the use of the intense and brilliant infrared emission from electron storage rings previously used only as VUV and X-ray sources. In the infrared range the low energy of the electron beam does not affect the synchrotron radiation spectral distribution, while high current will make storage rings the most brilliant infrared sources to be used for infrared spectroscopy and micro-spectroscopy. Infrared micro-spectroscopy is a unique technique that combines microscopy and spectroscopy for purposes of micro-analysis. Spatial resolution, within a microscopic field of view, is the goal of the modern infrared micro-spectroscopy applied to condensed matter physics, materials science, biophysics, and now to medicine. Although limited in spatial resolution, infrared is able to resolve chemistry using the contrast of the absorption lines. Fourier transform-infrared micro-spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation is now able to collect data with 2-4 cm^{-1} resolution on the scale of 10-100 seconds up to an area of a few microns opening a new scenario: infrared spectroscopy of entire cells and tissue. Moreover, distributions of functional groups such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids can be achieved inside a single living cell with a spatial resolution of a few microns.

Actually, a FTIR spectrum is characterized by many features, which may be correlated to the different components of the protein structure. In the last decade many relevant results have been achieved with this technique in terms of chemical imaging of proteins at subcellular level and in the investigation of cooperative phenomena. This contribution presents a few examples that illustrate the capability of the FTIR spectroscopy to investigate both protein structure and function and the opportunities offered by IR synchrotron radiation sources. Indeed the high source brilliance of these sources enables FTIR micro-spectroscopy to be performed with spatial and time resolution not available with standard sources. Moreover, the combination of synchrotron radiation and new two-dimensional detectors open new opportunities to investigate in the IR energy domain different protein processes in real time and with proteins in their native environments.

K-feldspars in pegmatites from Luc Yen gem mining area, Yen Bai province, Vietnam were studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray powder diffraction and the Raman spectroscopy. Chemical analysis determined the K-feldspars in the form: of (K_{0.8909}Na_{0.0388}Ca_{0.002}Pb_{0.0042}Cs_{0.0024}Rb_{0.0338})(Al_{0.9975}Fe_{0.0053}Ti_{0.0004})Si_{2.988}O₈. Both X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicated Luc Yen K-feldspars as orthoclase phase. Together with the values of Al content of the T1 tetrahedral sites in orthoclase, it is understood that Luc Yen pegmatites are of young ages (Cenozoic) and shallow intrusive types.

Remarkable thermomechanical and electrical properties of silicon carbide (SiC) make this material very attractive for high-temperature, high-power, and high-frequency applications. Because of very low values of diffusion coefficient of most impurities in SiC, ion implantation is the best method to selectively introduce dopants over well-defined depths in SiC. Aluminium is commonly used for creating p-type regions in SiC. However, post-implantation radiation damage, which strongly deteriorates required electric properties of the implanted layers, is difficult to anneal even at high temperatures because of remaining residual damage. Therefore implantation at elevated target temperatures (hot implantation) is nowadays an accepted method to decrease the level of the residual radiation damage by avoiding ion beam-induced amorphization. The main objective of this study is to compare the results of the Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy with channeling and micro-Raman spectroscopy investigations of room temperature and 500°C $Al^{+}$ ion implantation-induced damage in 6H-SiC and its removal by high temperature (up to 1600°C) thermal annealing.

Single layers of ZnSe with thicknesses of 30, 40, 50, 70 and 100 nm are deposited at room substrate temperature by thermal evaporation of ZnSe powder in vacuum. The layers surface morphology has been investigated by atomic force microscopy. Structural characterization by the Raman scattering measurement revealed the existence of randomly oriented crystalline ZnSe particles in all layers, and the presence of amorphous phase in layers thinner than 100 nm. The ellipsometric measurements were performed in the range from 1.5 to 5 eV at room temperature in air. To interpret the experimental results, the Bruggeman effective medium approximation of dielectric function of ZnSe layers has been used, representing the layers as different mixtures of crystalline ZnSe (c-ZnSe), amorphous ZnSe (a-ZnSe), and voids. The assumption of polycrystalline ZnSe layers modeled as mixture of porous c-ZnSe (with volume fraction of voids ≈ 0.17) and a-ZnSe gives the best fit of ellipsometric experimental data. Single layer thicknesses similar to those expected from preparation conditions have been obtained by this fitting procedure. It has been also found that decrease in the layer thickness causes an increase of the volume fraction of a-ZnSe. Thus, c-ZnSe/a-ZnSe ratio, porosity and layer thickness obtained by spectroscopic ellipsometry, provides useful information about crystallinity and micro-/nanostructure of ZnSe nanolayers.

The room temperature IR- and Raman spectra of the different M$\text{}_{3}$RE(PO$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{2}$ (M = K, Rb; RE = La, Eu, Gd) double phosphates were analysed and used to interpret the vibronic side band structure in the photoluminescence spectra. The intraconfigurational 4f-4f electronic transitions in the photoluminescence spectra of the Eu$\text{}^{3+}$ doped M$\text{}_{3}$RE(PO$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{2}$ were analysed in detail. The crystal field fine structure of the $\text{}^{5}$D$\text{}_{0}$ → $\text{}^{7}$F$\text{}_{J}$ (J=0-4) transitions was analysed accounting for the information on the crystal structure. The effect of the temperature as well as the alkali host cation was evaluated. Finally, a preliminary crystal field energy level scheme for the $\text{}^{7}$F$\text{}_{J}$ (J=0-4) ground term was deduced from the analysis of the photo-luminescence as well as IR- and Raman spectra.

The brightness (or brilliance) of synchrotron radiation was exploited in infrared microspectrosocopy. Among application of this synchrotron-based microanalytical technique, biological and biomedical investigations, at the diffraction-limited spot size, are exhibit of an increasing interest among almost all the existing infrared beamline worldwide. This paper is presenting the main properties of such a source, coupled with an infrared microscope. Several important applications in biomedical field are reported: cancer cells studies and drug effects, human substantia nigra in Parkinson's disease, β-amyloids deposits in Alzheimer's disease.

In this work, we have studied the ultrafast dynamics of charges and spins in assemblies of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) and maghemite (γ - Fe₂O₃) nanoparticles. We demonstrate that using time-resolved magneto-optics one is able to disentangle those very similar iron oxide structures. The Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles are elaborated by hydrothermal decomposition and deposited by drop on a glass substrate. γ - Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles assemblies have been obtained by annealing the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. Comparing time resolved transmission and Faraday rotation, our measurements show that in case of Fe₃O₄ the demagnetization occurs after the thermalization of the charges, as expected from previous works on ultrafast quenching of magnetization in ferromagnetic nanostructures. On the contrary, in the case of maghemite nanoparticles, an acceleration of the demagnetizing occurs, leading to a simultaneous charges and spins dynamics. We attribute this behavior to the rearrangement of vacancies and annealing of crystal defects in maghemite.

Photoinduced spin-charge dynamics in strongly correlated electron systems is studied based on an extended double-exchange model. Solving a time-dependent Schrödinger equation with the Lanczos method, we trace the process of photoinduced melting of an antiferromagnetic charge order and analyze the excitation-density dependence on that. In the case of low density photoexcitation, both charge and spin orders are melted by photocarrier doping. This is interpreted with a conventional double-exchange mechanism. In the case of high density photoexcitation, however, the charge order is melted. The antiferromagnetic spin order is transiently weakened but after turnoff of the photoirradiation it recovers. This phenomenon strikingly differs from the weak photoexcitation case.

We review the dynamical behavior of strongly electron-lattice (orbital) coupled system induced by photo-excitation of fs laser pulse. By virtue of the femtosecond (fs) spectroscopy and picosecond (ps) time-resolved X-ray diffraction measurements, we demonstrate that the photo-irradiation creates new ordered state so called as "hidden phase" which can never be realized under thermo-equilibrium condition. This exotic phase commonly plays the key role for realizing the gigantic photo-induced changes in optical properties of inorganic and organic electron-lattice strongly coupled systems.

Despite growing number of literature demonstrating the piezoelectric effect in bones at macro level there's still a lack of papers describing this effect at molecular level. In order to examine this effect more specifically, a study has been conducted to show the possibility of using infrared spectroscopy on samples contained in the electric field. This is the first known research on applying infrared spectroscopy to study the influence of electric field and compressive stress on bones' structure represented by the molecular IR spectrum. The samples used in this experiment as a model were prepared in pellet form, made from powdered pig's shin bone mixed with KBr (mass ratio of about 1:100). The spectra were obtained in transmission mode. Three different types of experiments were performed at each sample, which were subjected to: (a) fixed electric field (E < 40 kV/m), (b) variable electric field (0-40 kV/m), (c) compressive stress (P < 100 MPa). The obtained data have shown that the electric field and compressive stress on sample modified infrared spectra of the bone. Qualitative as well as quantitative changes in the spectral range between 900 $cm^{-1}$ and 1200 $cm^{-1}$ and the band at 562 $cm^{-1}$ ($PO_4^{3-}$ asymmetric and symmetric stretching, respectively) were observed. The relative area obtained by decomposition of the $PO_4^{3-}$ band reaches an extreme value in the external compressive stress (10 MPa), that occur under physiological conditions. Based on presented data, it was proved that the applied factors (electric field, compressive stress) can change the oscillation energy and the number of molecule's degrees of freedom.

Results of angular correlation of annihilation radiation and positron annihilation lifetime measurements are presented for five styrene copolymers: poly(co-styrene-phenylmaleimide) and its three derivatives with chlorine as well as for one with the OH group substituted in the benzene ring. It occurs that the chlorine substituted in three different positions in the benzene ring poly(co-styrene-o (or -m, -p)-chlorophenylmaleimide) inhibits the formation of the positronium to different extent. The greatest effect is observed in case of the chlorine atoms substituted in the benzene ring at ortho-position towards the nitrogen atom. In addition, electric dipole moments were measured for N-X-phenylmaleimide units, to check whether their magnitude influences the positron annihilation parameters. On the basis of the present results no correlation between the positron annihilation parameters and the electric dipole moments of the units was noticed.

The work is devoted to studies of ultrafast magnetization dynamics induced by femtosecond laser pulses in ferromagnetic Ni-Mn-Sn shape memory Heusler alloy. We studied epitaxial thin Ni_{54.3}Mn_{31.9}Sn_{13.8} film deposited on (001) MgO substrate. Spin precession in an external magnetic field was triggered and detected by the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE) using pump-probe technique in dual color scheme experiment. Measurements were performed as a function of magnetic field H and pulse power P. The measured TRMOKE signal is composed of oscillatory and background components, both decaying exponentially in a nanosecond time scale. The precession frequency was determined and found to be varying in the range of 1-10 GHz with H up to 3 kOe and decreasing linearly with P. The dependence of Gilbert damping parameter α on H was determined and discussed.
