Opis:
Purpose: To assess knowledge and attitude on mental disorder among adults in Putalibazar Municipality of Syangja district. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among adults of the aged group (18-64 years) in Putalibazar Municipality of Syangja district of Nepal. A semi-structured questionnaire was prepared for data collection. Similarly, the Likert scale was used to assess respondent’s attitude levels. SPSS 20 version and MS-Excel were used to analyze the data. The questionnaire was translated into the Nepali language during data collection. Results: The majority (57.3%) respondents responded mental disorder is a health condition involving changes in feeling and emotions. More than half (54.7%) respondents were having poor knowledge and the rest (45.3%) respondents were having a good level of knowledge on mental disorders. Respondents involved in a private job, government job and NGO/INGO have the highest, and housewives have the lowest level of knowledge regarding the mental disorder. Three-fifth respondents (59.7%) were having a negative attitude and the rest two-fifth respondents (40.3%) were having a positive attitude towards mental disorders. Also, the level of knowledge was having a statistically significant relationship with the education (p=0.02) and occupation (p=<0.001) of the respondents. The level of attitude was having a statistically significant relationship with the level of knowledge of the respondents (p=0.004). Conclusions: Good level of knowledge regarding mental disorders was lagging among respondents and a negative attitude seems high. There is an urgent need for public awareness among the adults living in this location. Mass media and anti-stigma campaigns can equally play a vital role to bring change in the attitude level of the respondents.

Opis:
Discussions regarding the notion of information have died out several years ago. However an agreement hasn’t been reached on the exact meaning of such a term. Most often the notion of information is understood as: 1) knowledge about structure of an object, 2) third appearance of the substance, 3) perceptible difference between objects. These interpretations are not exclusive, but there is not one theory that combine them. In cognitive psychology notion of information is perceived as a paradigm. At the same time its meaning is often equated with the concept of mental process, or the content of such mental process. Mental activity and in particular intellectual activity generally is recognized and equated with processing of an information. Such interpretation ignores the fact that information cannot be processed directly because it doesn’t exist without a carrier. In fact these carriers undergo processing. The new information based on re-configuration of carrier’s structure could be re-developed. The carriers are mental representations of the carried content and they represent themselves as icons, symbols and concepts. Hence the mental activity is the processing (sometimes creating) representations.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to analyse and interpret family life as an area of individuals’ emotional work and investments. The perspective of the above mentioned analysis is designated by the sociology of mental health. Relationships within a family have undeniable influence on the state of people’s mental health. These relationships can be a source of support as well as emotional burden. Families can either compensate for the social stress individuals experience due to processes at the macro level or enhance the emotional tension resulting from social stress. The main method used in this study is meta-analysis of epidemiological and clinical data concerning the mental health of the global (WHO) and Polish population (EZOP-Poland) and my own research – a nationwide, representative survey (N=1,000) carried out in Poland, which was part of a broader theoretical and empirical project devoted to the process of social construction of the categories of mental health, disease and disorder in late modern society. I also refer to my qualitative research including twenty in-depth interviews with psychologists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists who had experience in carrying out family, couples and individual therapy. The research objective was to find out whether and in what way some issues described from the socio-cultural perspective manifest themselves in the form of problems with which people turn to psychotherapists. The analysis and interpretation of data from the above mentioned sources enable us to put forward a thesis that living within a family entails not necessarily an alternative (either emotional burden or support), but a conjunction (both emotional burden and support). In this context the practical solutions that enable families to protect and strengthen the individual’s mental health should be searched for.

Background. The cognitive objective of the present paper was to diagnose and compare the level of body lateralization in girls and boys with mild intellectual disability in the area of functional asymmetry of selected motor abilities. The practical objective was to verify the possibilities of using the functional asymmetry test in body lateralization diagnosis in intellectually disabled adolescents. Material and methods. The study covered a group of 44 individuals in total, that is boys (22 persons) and girls (22 persons) aged 15–16 years. To assess the functional asymmetry the Koszczyc–Sekita test developed at the University School of Physical Education in Wrocław was used. Results. The tests enabled the authors to formulate the following general conclusion: the lateral diversity of 1) upper and lower limb velocity and 2) strength of lower extremities in the investigated girls and boys with mild intellectual disability is statistically insignificant. Only the strength of the upper limbs has a significant level of functional asymmetry. The lowest level of asymmetry occurs in strength of the lower limbs. Conclusion. The investigation is the next step in diagnosing the state of lateralization in children and adolescents with intellectual disability. This is an issue which has been poorly studied though it is essential to be effective in such activities as learning and teaching. For the above reasons the diagnosis in this developmental area should become one of the most important elements of the teachers’ work.

I challenge this assumption with the help of results presented in Shepard and Metzler (1971), Zeman et al. (2010), and Keogh and Pearson (2018). The studies suggest that imagery tasks can be successfully performed by means of cognitive/propositional strategies which do not rely on imagery.

The following paper is an answer to a research question regarding the impact of retinal size (understood as the tangent of the object’s physical size and its distance from the subject) on mental transformations. A total of 182 people took part in three designed experiments, which included three types of operations: 1) synthesis as an operation changing the structure of the object; 2) rotation as an operation preserving the structure of the object; and 3) a combination of the two. The impact of retinal size on the course of rotation was confirmed. Furthermore, it turned out that this impact significantly influenced the effectiveness of all three mental operations. A tendency regarding the impact of physical size on synthesis was demonstrated (participants performed mental transformations in the most optimal way on 15 cm (5.9 in) objects – such that can be held in a hand in the real world). It was noticeable that the optimal distance to the object, preferred by participants, was 30 cm (11.8 in). In the real world, such a distance enables them to transform objects freely within arm’s reach. The obtained results support the analogousness of the mental world to the world in which we live.

The objective of this paper was to address the notion of family stigma related to mental illnesses and discuss relevant theoretical perspectives. The review of the literature performed in this study shows that concepts of “family stigma” and “stigma by association” are used interchangeably. Family stigma includes the prejudice and discrimination experienced by members of family of a person suffering from mental illness. For many families the stigmatization that surrounds mental illness is a central issue causing concern, anxiety, shame and self-blame. Moreover, family members can be considered somehow “contaminated” because of close relationship they have with the stigmatized mentally ill person in their family. It is shown that current research results indicate this type of stigma negatively affects family members and relatives. In the paper’s closure some educational programmes devoted to counteracting the family stigma linked to metal disorders are presented.

The primary aim of this paper is an attempt at the analysis of the prospective direct and indirect, short- and long-term consequences of COVID-19 pandemic for the individuals’ mental health. The secondary aim is to deconstruct the binarity of categories of “mental health” and “mental disorder” in the context of the global critical situation. The pandemic and its consequences such as isolation requirements as well as uncertainty in diverse aspects of life burden the individuals with the stress that results in the increase of anxiety and depressiveness, which challenges the public mental health care systems. Since the anxiety and depressive states are the reactions to a hazardous outside situation, the categories of “mental health” and “mental disorder” needs reconsideration. The theoretical framework of present analyses is determined by the theory of social (cultural) trauma. The method used for the present study is a meta-analysis of theoretical literature, the results of empirical research on COVID-19 pandemic published so far (mostly in medical journals), studies on psychosocial aspects of the previous pandemics (SARS and Ebola), and press publications selected on the basis of their content on mental health issues in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.

The text comments about the relationship between doctor and patient of psychiatric hospital as shown in selected modern Russian fiction. This topic, that has been present in Russian literature since the 19th century, being a vital component of mental illness theme, is even more valid nowadays. The analysis of the discussed novels leads to the conclusion, that age plays no significant role in depicting the above-mentioned relationship. Furthermore, regarding “youth” and “old age” as a pair of predicates, it confirms the thesis on continuous (either consciously or unconsciously) positive doctor- and negative patient-presentation.

Opis:
Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his/her own potential, can cope with the normal stress of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his/her community (World Health Organization, 2004). War and disasters have the greatest impact on mental health and psychosocial well-being. A considerable number of child refugees enter Europe to seek refuge from ongoing conflict and war in their home countries. Refugee children are at greater risk of psychological distress than non-refugee children and they may develop symptoms such as depression, PTSD, anxiety, physical problems or become aggressive. Trauma can impact the children’s physical well-being, cognitive development and psychological/emotional well-being and behavior. Therefore, these children are identified as having unique; however, urgent mental health needs requiring timely interventions. According to these findings, in this article the author is trying to explain the mental health problems and interventions among two refugee children (brother and sister) who stayed in the Transit Centre “Vinojug” in Gevgelija, Republic of Macedonia, two years ago. They had significant psychological disturbances such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, because they lost their home and their father. They have been here only with their pregnant mother. At the beginning they needed individual psychiatric or psychological support, but later also group psycho-social support. Verbal, art and game-based interventions proved effective in reducing the PTSD symptoms and depression. After that, the children showed positive emotions such as gratitude, hope, happiness, and optimism. At the same time they started to attend the local school and the first words in Macedonian language were: “Hello, how are you?” They have already learned the Macedonian language and counted in Macedonian; they knew how to ask for water and learned the basic terms. Hence, when they left the Transit Center with their mother, they were very sad: “Here we have many new friends who help and love us”. Our study provides a strong evidence base regarding the use of verbal and clinical interventions for PTSD and emotional and behavioral difficulties, respectively. Also, the main goal of the psychological workshop is stimulation of the copy strategies, resilience and psychosocial development through structured playful activities such as voice, movement, painting, drawing, song, sound.

The family can be a background of health crises and – at the same time – the greatest source of support for a child. It plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of disorders and increasing the psychological immunity of teenagers. The article presents a number of threats to the mental health of young people, derived from different research. Its main goal is to present the importance of the support system for parents and families in protection of children's mental health. Against this background, some parental errors and deficiencies are analysed as the reasons for ignoring the first symptoms of a child’s crisis. Support for the youth and their families should be provided not only from parents but also from teachers, pedagogues and their wider social environment. Many institutions, including medical staff, schools, governmental and non-governmental organisations may effectively support parents and caregivers in prevention and intervention in a situation of mental crisis. The article discusses the determinants of effective help for families experiencing mental health crises of children.

Objectives: To explore if the Barcelona Integral Care Program for Doctors with mental disorders (PAIMM, in Catalan) has achieved its goal of enhancing earlier and voluntary help-seeking amongst sick doctors. Material and Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 1363 medical records of physicians admitted to the inpatient and outpatient units of the PAIMM from February 1st, 1998 until December 31st, 2011. The sample was divided into 3 time periods: 1998-2004, 2005-2007 and 2008-2011 (477, 497, and 389 cases, respectively). Results: The mean age at admission decreased (F = 77.57, p < 0.001) from the first period (x = 54.18; SD = 10.28 years) to the last period (x = 44.81; SD = 10.65 years), while voluntary referrals increased from 81.3% to 91.5% (Chi² = 17.85, p < 0.001). Mental disorders other than substance use disorders grew from 71% during the 1998-2003 period, to 87.4% (2004-2007), and 83.9% in the last period (Chi2 = 29.01, p < 0.001). Adjustment disorders increased their prevalence, while inpatient treatment progressively represented less of the overall clinical activity. Conclusions: Sick doctors may feel encouraged to seek help in non-punitive programs specially designed for them and where treatment becomes mandatory only when there is risk or evidence of malpractice.

Cel pracy. Poznanie poziomu wiedzy badanych na temat chorych psychicznie oraz prezentowanych wobec nich społecznych postaw i emocji. Materiał i metoda. Badaniem ankietowym objęto 200 dorosłych, z tego 130 kobiet i 70 mężczyzn w różnych przedziałach wiekowych. Respondenci pochodzili z miast i wsi powiatu gliwickiego i strzeleckiego. Narzędzie badawcze stanowiła ankieta autorska. Wyniki.
Introduction: The problem of the attitude towards mentally ill people and the way the patients are perceived by the society constitute the topic which seems to be worth a closer look, as the knowledge obtained might be of great value to change the way these people are treated. Aim of the study: The aim of the study is to learn what the level of knowledge about the mentally ill is and what the attitudes and emotions these people evoke. Material and method: The questionnaire has been answered by 200 adults, including 130 women and 70 men representing different age groups. The respondents lived both in towns or villages of Strzelecki and Gliwicki regions. The questionnaire was generated by the author of the study herself. Results: 5 per cent of the respondents have estimated their knowledge about mentally ill people at a high level, while 39 per cent at a moderate level, with 38.5 per cent at a low level but would like to learn more and, finally, 7.5 per cent admitted having no information on the topic. The majority of the interviewees claimed that the mentally ill are scared of interpersonal contacts in public places, feel uncomfortable seeing people’s reactions to them and they are afraid of being judged. In addition, they feel worse, ashamed and fear of being laughed at. Conclusions: The level of the knowledge about mentally ill people seems to be satisfactory, although insufficient. The causes of their social withdrawal might be found among intolerance, lack of acceptance of their behaviours and the way they function in the society

Background The aim of this work is to provide empirical evidence regarding types and increasing prevalence of mental disorders affecting Polish working population in the years 2014–2016. The research questions concerned the specific characteristics of the types of mental disorders and their prevalence as well as the differences between males and females. Material and Methods Types of mental disorders were investigated using a clinical method, a structured interview, as well as medical record data gathered in the years 2014–2016 in one mental health treatment center. The study was conducted in the population of 1578 working individuals aged 18–64 years old, in various forms of employment, including flexible employment (self-employment, task assignment agreement) and contract employment. The research population consisted of 998 females and 580 males, aged 18–64 years old. The study aimed at investigating types and the prevalence rate of mental disorders developed in the examined working Poles, also with reference to the sex of the study participants as well as the age at which they started seeking treatment. Results The prevailing disorders include neurotic disorders; diagnosed according to the 10th Revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) classification as a range of anxiety disorders, mixed anxiety-depressive disorders, stress-related and somatoform disorders; as well as personality disorders. The prevalence rate of the aforementioned disorders was found to be higher among working females than in the group of working males. Conclusions The overall study conclusions based on the research data analysis point to the fact that the prevalence rate of various types of mental disorders displayed by the examined working males and females increased significantly in the years 2014–2016. The subject of the author’s discussion is to present the Snoezelen as a method supporting comprehensive human development, which can be used in the therapy and prevention of mental health. The starting point for considerations is the currently observed upward trend in the scope of the occurrence of difficulties in mental functioning, especially in Poland, affecting an ever wider group of people. The use of therapeutic support dedicated to individual patients was presented. The search for new solutions in the field of optimization of psychological and therapeutic help was considered, due to the growing need to mobilize interdisciplinary therapeutic activities. The Snoezelen method was indicated as a promising form of therapeutic support with high international effectiveness in various recipients. The author points out the need to include the Snoezelen among the fundamental methods of therapy, at the same time, reflecting the need to expand research in this area.

The presented research concerns 11-year-old Greek students’ mental representations of the mechanisms of vision in conditions of natural and artificial light, as well as the persistence of those representations in terms of the two different states of lighting and the expression form of the provided answers (oral speech; sketches). The study consisted of two phases: test interviews and an interview process, where personal interviews were conducted with 30 participants. The results showed that the 11-year-old pupils employed the majority of the vision schemes that are included in the international bibliography; however, they tended to use the Sea of Light mechanism and a new scheme the researchers called Illumination of the Object. The schemes employed, however, are not consistent, either throughout the different states of lighting, or in the 3-D and 2-D world.

The paper presents the review of mapping techniques applied in research using mental maps. The review covers both evaluative and structural mapping. The choice of a method is influenced by the level of freedom given to the respondents while creating sketch maps. It is also highly aefcted by the area of a given region, scale used in the research and limitations of mapping techniques in GIS software. For large scale maps created in GIS software, it is possible to use quantitative methods, i.e. proportional symbol maps or quantitative signature symbols. Using multiple complementary mapping techniques allows to draw the most comprehensive conclusions in the analyses of perception of a given space in the society.

Opis:
Problems of reactive mental disorders and of the simulation of mental disorders have lately been very poorly represented in both psychiatrist and criminological literature. The present contribution discusses the sources of a considerable number of difficulties which emerge in practice when discussing the question of “Reactive disorder or malingering?”, as well as the errors of diagnosis in diagnosing malingering. The contribution is based on a analysis of material which comprizes three hundred and fifty cases of reactive mental disorders, and ninety-nine cases of malingering (simulation), with the accused; such material has been obtained from the Department of Forensic Psychiatry of the Psychoneurological Institute and from fifteen mental hospitals in Poland, to which prisoners were sent for observation. When making use of the term of “ malingering” , the contents of that notion ought to be narrowed down so as to comprize behaviour of such kind, which consists in an individual who is not mentally ill consciously producing definite psychopathological symptoms. We could not possibly consider to be malingering in the true sense of the word the producing by a mental patient (e.g. one suffering from schizophrenia) of symptoms which are not characteristic of the disorder in question. What is described by the term of sursimulation, even though it contains elements of malingering, essentially differs from true malingering. On the other hand, the view is not correct which reads that we may only then speak of malingering, when the simulating of symptoms of mental disorders makes its appearance with persons who do not exhibit any abnormal traits. Malingering most frequently makes its appearance with prisoners who exhibit symptoms of psychopathy, encephalopathy, mental deficiency, etc. The problem of metasimulation deserves special attention. The fact that at a given moment we have to do with a behaviour which indicates malingering is not by itself evidence that previously, during the period immediately preceding such malingering, reactive disorders did not appear with same prisoner. The symptoms of reactive disorders during the period which preceded the sending of the prisoner to a mental hospital may have become almost entirely extinguished, while their place was taken by an attitude of malingering, greatly reminiscent of the recent symptoms of reactive mental disorders. Besides, in cases of that kind there also arises, as a rule, the question of whether, side by side with elements of malingering, there do not appear feebly marked symptoms of reactive mental disorders, as remnants of the reactive disorders from which the patient had previously been suffering. Neither should another difficulty, which jurisdiction finds in its path, be forgotten. When having to do with an attitude of obvious malingering, one ought to take into consideration the possibility of malingering being gradually transformed into reactive disorders. The mechanism of malingering becomes fixed in the prisoner’s mind, it undergoes automation, and sets into motion a hysterical mechanism, which, in its turn, acts independently, in the way proper to it, owing to which psychogenic disturbances arise. Such a state as that cannot be described as malingering, in spite of the fact that it was simulation that not only constituted the starting-point of the disorders arisen, but had actually provoked, and to some extent moulded, them. An individual in that state no longer exercises any control over the symptoms of reactive disorders which have appeared, he ceases to exercise any mastery over them; the former malingering mechanism has been driven out of his consciousness and has become transformed into a new, and considerably more complicated hysterical mechanism. The cases discussed above may still run a course complicated in another way, namely after the transformation of malingering into reactive disorders certain symptoms of the latter in their turn are subject to undergo, even after the extinction of the disorders, a conscious consolidation through the new manifestation of the malingering mechanism. Therefore in such cases malingering may be observed, not only at the beginning, but also after the recession of the state of reactive disorders, in the form of metasimulation. The mechanism of the arising of reactive disorders is analogous to that of the arising of malingering; at the basis of both the above mechanisms there lie certain common fundamental tendencies. In all probability malingering runs along the very same tracks as hysterical reaction, and mobilizes, through the intermediary of autosuggestion, analogous mechanisms, causing, as it were, the automation of certain attitudes. Malingering individuals, even though at first they control that mechanism and consciously steer it, may lose their control over it. This leads to the cases of a transformation of malingering into reactive mental disorders, discussed above. The knowledge of making use of a mechanism approximating a hysterical one, of producing and fixing certain symptoms which would constitute a good imitation of disorders, is - as is well known - a most difficult thing. This is why long-lasting and consistently carried out malingering is an extremely rare phenomenon. An individual who simulates in such a way must be equipped with peculiar features, in order to be equal to tasks of that kind. Hence the well-know saying that “ one can simulate well only that which is close to the simulating persons’s individuality” (Lassegue), and that “ a good malingerer must be born such” (Braun). Among psychiatrists there prevails, generally speaking, an agreement as to the view that long-lasting and consistent malingering happens, as a rule, only with persons whose personality exhibits clearly pathological features. The data obtained from sixteen mental hospitals for the period of 1953 - 1960 bear witness to the fact that, out of 5,967 male prisoners sent there for psychiatric examination, mental reactive disorders have been found to exist with 711 cases (11.9 per cent.), and malingering of mental disorders in a mere 99 cases (1.6 per cent.). In the case of the 793 women, sent from prisons to mental hospitals for psychiatric examination, reactive disorders were found to exist in 73 cases (9.2 per cent.), and malingering in a mere 7 cases (0.9 per cent). When we analyse the 99 forensic-psychiatric reports which diagnosed malingering, it appears that we may distinguish two different groups of cases among them. The first of them comprizes 70 prisoners,, with whom the diagnosis of mere malingering does not arouse any essentia] diagnostical reservations. On the other hand, in the second group, which comprizes 29 cases, we have to do with 19 cases of undoubted metasimulation, as well as with 19 cases which are doubtful. Doubts arise in connection with the possibility of the co-existence of reactive disorders with simulation (5 cases), as well as with the presence of reactive disorders during the period immediately preceding malingering (3 cases), or finally, because of data which speak in favour rather of reactive disorders than of malingering (11 cases). Thus it is only in seventy cases that the diagnosis of malingering does not arouse any serious doubts; neither should it be forgotten that, at the same time (i.e. during the same seven-and-a-half-year period) as many as 711 cases of reactive mental disorders were observed with prisoners in sixteen mental hospitals. Thus cases of malingering of long duration are an extremely rare phenomenon in forensic psychiatrist practice. For the purpose of establishing how do the data look which concern long-term malingering of mental disorders in prisons, data concerning the number of cases of malingering within the period of one year have been obtained from the psychiatrists employed in two large Warsaw prisons, which are, in principle, destined only for prisoners under investigation. It was found that the number of malingering prisoners amounted, in one prison to nine, and in the other to five. Taking into consideration the number of all the prisoners detained in those prisons in the course of twelve months, the “ co-efficient of malingering” , calculated as per one thousand prisoners, amounts to 1.86 and 0.96 respectively. After a correction has been introduced, because of the possibility of certain prisoners failing to report for examination, that co-efficient should not exceed 2 pro mille.[1] Among the 350 cases of reactive disorders, selected by lot out of the total number of reports with a diagnosis of “ reactive disorder” for the purpose of obtaining a representative sample, metasimulation during the period of clinical observation has been stated to take place in as many as 24.8 per cent, of the cases.  When examining the two groups of cases: those of “ pure” malingering and those of metasimulation, we can establish the essential differences which exist between them. Those prisoners with whom no reactive disorders have been found to exist during observation, simulate other symptoms of psychotic disorders than those prisoners, with whom malingering has made its appearance only after the extinction of reactive disorders in hospital.   In the group of the seventy “ pure” cases of malingering the most numerously represented is the simulation of memory defects and of mental deficiency, or else of dementia; apart from the above, prisoners also simulate symptoms of conversion hysteria, of hallucination or delusion, as well as, exceptionally, symptoms of stupor.  On the other hand, in the group of fifty cases of metasimulation, more than one-half of the total number consisted of prisoners who simulated symptoms of pseudodementia along with elements of puerilism (which were altogether absent from the group of “ pure” simulation). Of cases of con- fabulation with symptoms of pseudodelusions there were eight, while there were none of them in the “ pure simulation” group. Of individuals who simulated memory disorders there were three times less.  Deserving of particular attention are the twenty-six cases of “ pure” malingering, in which the whole manner of simulating, the contents of the pseudo-symptoms produced, and the prisoner’s entire behaviour are of such a kind, that it seems improbable that the simulating individual could suppose that he would succeed in deluding his environment. The attitude of such prisoners is one of playful contradiction, usually coupled with irony and mockery with regard to the medical personnel; their behaviour is characterized by elements of acting and indeed of clowning; the absurdity of their utterances is glaring. Periodically, however, states of a certain inhibition make their appearance, and from time to time sudden changes of mood are visible, considerable tension, violent attempts at aggressive behaviour, and tendencies to self-mutilation.  It was Mönkenmöller who, once upon a time, drew attention to that peculiar form of malingering, in which it is impossible to detect any intelligible purpose. In such cases malingering assumes the character of acting which gives the malingerer some satisfaction (“spielerische Simulation' 4, as Utitz called it); The picture of malingering gives one to think by its specific features, and is distinguished, from the other types of malingering, by its altogether exceptional primitivism and inconsistency. 92 per cent, of the prisoners who simulated in that way were recidivists with a considerable number of previous convictions to their names. In the anamnesis of nearly one-half of them alcoholism and brain trauma, as well as other chronical brain diseases, made their appearance. More than one-half of their total number have performed self-mutilation in prison. In the cases of “pure”, true malingering there appear, in the hospital material investigated, numerous prisoners with symptoms of encephalopathy (37.1 per cent.) and psychopaths (about 40 per cent.), as a rule described as impulsive, irritable, aggressive. Not a single malingering prisoner has been qualified as an individual with a normal personality. The prisoners who simulated mental disorders are recruited - 81 per cent, of them - from among recidivists, as a rule from among juvenile or young offenders: sixty-six per cent, of the investigated were under twenty-five years of age. They belonged to the category of offenders who commit common offences, mostly offences against property, with thefts predominating. Among the reactive mental disorders to be met with in forensic psychiatrist practice and in the prisons, two kinds of disorders may be distinguished. First of all, the group of disorders of the type of hysterical disorders, the majority of which has a more primitive character; they are: pseudodementia, Ganser’s syndrom, puerilism, states of incomplete stupor and of stupor, fancies with contents similar to those of delusions, and symptoms of conversion hysteria. It is precisely that category of disorders that oftentimes causes particular difficulties in practice, when it is a matter of distinguishing them from malingering. The second group of reactive disorders, with more psychotic symptoms, comprizes: reactive depressions, stupor, and syndroms with delusions and hallucinations and paranoid states. In this category of disorders disturbances of consciousness are much more clearly discernible than they are in the first. Bunyeyev, however, correctly emphasizes the fact that clinical experience points to the fact that in the several syndroms distinguished above there are frequently contained elements, of other reactive syndroms, and, moreover, in a considerable number of cases it can be observed, how, in the course of the disorders, one set of syndroms gives way to other symptom syndroms. Consequently, the clinical picture is usually considerably more complicated than would result from a description that would only take into consideration the most fundamental elements. Among the three hundred and fifty cases of reactive disorders with prisoners under investigation the several syndroms make their appearance In the following dimensions:   Pseudodementia                                                 90 cases    25.7 per cent. Puerilism                                                              16     “          4.6 per cent.  Ganser’s syndrom                                              17     “          4.9 per cent. Depressions                                                         79      “        22.6 per cent. Syndrom of stupor (41)                                      59      “          and states of incomplete stupor (18)              47       “       16.9 per cent. Syndroms with hallucinations and delusions                      13.4 per cent. Paranoid states                                                    12       “        3.4 per cent. Conversion hysteria                                             20      “         5.7 per cent. Fancies with contents similar to delusions     10       “         2,8 per cent. Pseudodementia, Ganser’s syndrom and puerilism between them account for 35.2 per cent, of the material investigated. Pseudodementia and puerilism frequently constitute the source of serious difficulties when it is a matter of distinguishing them from malingering, if hospital observation is of too short duration. Seventy per cent, of the above cases spent over three months on observation in hospitals, including nearly twenty per cent, who spent more than six months there.  After a syndrom of pseudodementia, it may be sometimes observed the malingering of the extinct symptoms of that syndrom (metasimulation). Among the cases of metasimulation in the material under investigation in fifty-five per cent, malingering was precisely connected with pseudodementia. Reactive depressions are the second set, as far as numbers are concerned, in the material under investigation (22.64 per cent.). Reactive depressions are of various character. The obvious colouring of the majority of such states with hysterical traits frequently lends a peculiar stamp to the clinical picture, and may incorrectly suscitate a suspicion of malingering.  Mental disorders with a stupor syndrom, as is well known, rarely arise as isolated type of reaction. Considerably more frequently stupor takes place after pseudodementia, Ganser’s syndrom and puerilism, not infrequently after a period of a seeming withdrawal of all reactive symptoms. What is more, after stupor there frequently appear once more symptoms of other reactive disorders, first and foremost those of pseudodementia (Bunyeyev, Pastushenko). In cases of incompletely developed stupor there frequently appear suspicions of malingering, even though such casses ought to be numbered undoubted mental disorders.  When discussing cases with a hallucination and delusion syndrome one ought to remember that even in such cases the suspicion of malingering occasionally makes its appearance. This is influenced by the fact that the contents of the hallucination are closely connected with the prisonner’s own situation, that his behaviour is characterized by lively emotional reactions, and that he not infrequently manifests interest in his further lot, his family, etc. In fact the suspicion of malingering as a rule proves to be unfounded. Morever, it should not be forgotten that, in cases with a hallucination and delusion syndrome there not infrequently emerge serious diagnostic difficulties in connection with the posibility of the existence of schizophrenia.  Among the reactive disorders observed with prisoners in the hospitals there were twelve cases of acute paranoid state. In this, relatively very infrequent, syndrom, which develops against a background of intensified fear and anxiety, and rapidly disappears under conditions of hospitalization, the existence of hallucinations, mainly visual ones, has also been found.  The symptoms which approach delusions include the so-called confabulation, with contents resembling those of delusions (“wahnhafte Einbildungen” ), which had been described by Birnbaum more than fifty years ago. The inventing of occasionally the most improbable and queerest facts takes place against a background of usually glaringly expressed hysterical traits; occasionally elements of pseudodementia and puerilism become visible. All this together may suscitate serious suspicions of malingering; prolonged observation, however, makes it posible to find the existence of clearly reactive disorders. Of such cases there were ten in the material under investigation. Predominant among them were cases of persecutory pseudodelusions (eight cases), with the most absurd and fantastical subject-matter. In the remaining two cases it was grotesque grandiose pseudodelusions that made their appearance. Both the attitudes and the behaviour of all such individuals were, as a rule, in complete contradiction with the contents of their utterances. Those prisoners who exhibited symptoms of reactive mental disorders differ in an essential way from those prisoners who simulate pathological symptoms. First of all, there are considerably less recidivists among them: the percentage of the latter did not exceed 33 per cent, while with the simulators it reached 81 per cent. Among the prisoners with reactive disorders there are less individuals who would exhibit organic changes of the brain (23 per cent., as compared with 37,1 per cent, with the malingerers), while, on the other hand, the percentage of persons of the schizoid type is considerably larger (36 per cent., as against about 10 per cent, with the malingerers), as well as that of psychopaths with obvious hysterical traits (31.4 per cent., as against about 20 per cent, with the malingerers).  A mere 4.5 per cent, of the total number of prisoners with reactive mental disorders under investigation were found to be persons whose premorbid personality did not suggest any suspicions concerning pathology; all the remaining ones figure, in the diagnoses, either as psychopaths, or else as persons with symptoms of encephalopathy. In spite of the lack of any exhaustive anamneses in a great many cases it was found possible to state that at least 17 per cent, of the prisoners sent to mental hospitals because of reactive mental disorders had already previously suffered from such disorders. The cases of reactive states of a protracted character, numerous in the material under investigation (32 per cent, among the cases dealt with in the Institute of Psychoneurology) make one realize the importance of a proper conception of the problem of reactive mental disorders with prisoners. In those cases states which could at first produce an impression of simulation were relatively numerously represented. Mistrust in such cases might well be increased by the fact that nearly one-half of them consisted of prisoners accused of the perpetration of homicide. A hospital observation which went on for many months on end, not only did confirm the diagnosis of a reactive mental disorder, but has also, over and above that, demonstrated that those mental disorders had, in a considerable number of cases, become so deep, that a large number of the patients had to be assigned for release from prison. Merely about 22 per cent, of the total of those suffering from protracted disorders recovered their health and could, later on, be prosecuted before a law-court.  A working hypothesis in both prisons and forensic-psychiatric practice should therefore be the premisse that a pure malingering of mental disorders going on for a longer period of time is an altogether exceptional phenomenon, and that, as a rule, we have to do, in such cases, with reactive disorders. A different approach not only does run counter to the present-day state of psychiatrist knowledge, but is also highly harmful for both forensic and prison practice, as well as being inhumanitarian.   [1] In order to avoid any misunderstandings it ought to be emphasized that we are here referring to cases of long duration, of a malingering of mental disorders going on for at least several weeks on end. Clumsy attempts at simulating pathological symptoms for a period of a few days, naturally, altogether elude a psychiatrist who is not permanently employed in the prison in question, and, in all probability happen much more frequently

At the beginning the paper introduces the role of patient and the four features of the role, as formulated by T. Parsons and E. Freidson in their sociology works. Based on this concept of the role of the patient, the text argues in favour of recognising the mental illness as a real illness. (This recognition is not obvious and is often disputed.) Next, the paper explains the phenomenon of prejudices, and how they are formed. It is related to the stereotypes and the process of categorisation, and therefore the work presents these terms as well. Some specific examples of prejudice both against the mentally ill and psychiatry as such are also introduced. In the last chapter, the issue of stigma and stigmatisation related to the mental illness is presented. The focus is made on the etymology of the word “stigma” and its current use. The paper aims at clarifying the social status of the mentally ill, who suffer not only from their disease, but also from the above mentioned negative social phenomena such as prejudices and stigmatisation.

The aim of the article is presenting two ways of the state’s response to the danger caused by individuals with mental disorders pursuant to the Act on Mental Health Protection and the Act on the Procedures Applicable to People with Mental Disorders Posing Threat to Other People’s Life, Health or Sexual Freedom. There is a need to provide safety to society which justifies applying measures which often interfere with human freedom. The connection between mental sanity and the criminal justice system is complex, and it can be treated as a scene upon which the society projects different attitudes, emotions and feelings about responsibility, free will, autonomy, public safety and the meaning and purpose of punishment. Not every kind of mental disorder creates a danger for others – yet, the fact that there is a high probability of committing a crime imposes the necessity of an adequate state reaction.
Volunteering is an unpaid activity for the benefit of various groups of people, incl. persons experiencing mental disorders. Motivations for volunteering may differ and involve the desire to gain experience and new knowledge, the need to repay to the community and to help those in need, and also the need to feel accepted or the desire to establish new relationships and verify one’s own aspirations. Some of the reasons for volunteering are related to the willingness to “give”, while others are related to “receiving”. The volunteers working with people with mental disorders are a valuable part of the support system. The volunteers can work in many places and in various ways. Volunteering activities are included both in the law defining the framework of the volunteering as well as in the code of ethics of volunteers, which can be a starting point for designing appropriate volunteering activities. Volunteering plays a significant role in supporting people with mental disorders, volunteering activities complements institutional support, and volunteers themselves can support professionals. In view of the role of volunteering, it is important to continue looking for ways to improve the recruiting, training and management of volunteering, and to support volunteers in their work, to minimize burnout and to reduce frequency of volunteers’ turnover, as well as to maximize the potential of every individual.

Opis:
The aim of the report is to portray the contemporary knowledge concerning mental health condition and the quality of life of mothers taking care of mentally handicapped children as factors relating to the quality of parental care. People with mental retardation have problems with adaptation to different aspects of life. Therefore a parental care is thought to be strenuous and long-lasting. Parents have to accept the fact that their children will need protection for the whole life and that children’s health condition have never been essentially improved. Medical research show that looking after mentally retarded children have negative influence both on mental health condition and the quality of life of caregivers. Such parents suffer from depression, anxiety disorders, insomnia, a feeling of guilty, loneliness and social isolation more often than parents of healthy children. There are a lot of aspects of maternal care, which seem to be stressful. They are not only factors connected with the level of functioning of a child and the health condition of a parent, but also with difficulty in finding babysitter, financial status, lack of emotional support from a partner or friends, change of future prospects and restrictions of social life. Additionally, it is important to notice that mental health condition has meaningful bearing on the quality of child protection. Researchers believe that mental disorders of mothers such as depression, anxiety, psychosis can be the causes of child neglect. As a consequence, children are affected with delayed speech, behaviour disorders, trunacy, problems with learning and personality disorders in the future. Some investigators believe that even slight symptoms of discouragement concerning mothers could be a cause of their irratibility and poor concentration abilities, which are noticed by a child.

Opis:
The modern linguistics is gaining a more and more anthropocentric markedness. This contributes, among others, to increased interest in language awareness. This paper is intended to provide both an overview and a systematisation. The threads it touches upon concern three issues. The author defines the very notion of language awareness, outlines the operating mechanisms of the mental base of speech, and identifies the subjects to whom language awareness may be attributed. Language awareness needs to be considered a separate mental structure being a fragment of the general human awareness. The structure has a dual nature. Some of its reserves are innate components, others are contents and dispositions obtained in the course of individual development. Both are responsible for language acquisition, coordinate language activities, and substantiate various judgments regarding speech as a portion of the collective life, i.e. a product of culture and a culture-building measure. The contents composing the broadly defined individual language awareness at the same time create the cognitive sphere, the pragmatic sphere, and the affective sphere. Obviously, specific language decisions are influenced by collective linguistic views. The speaker always gives in to supraindividual rules, which are an outcome of the states of collective consciousness.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję zastosowania interfejsu mózg-komputer wykorzystującego sygnały EEG do monitorowania wybranych stanów emocjonalnych pracownika, takich jak zaangażowanie uwagi, zamyślenie, frustracja, ekscytacja. Koncepcję oparto na wykorzystaniu neurohełmu, działającego na zasadzie uproszczonego elektroencefalografii.
Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a system m which commands are transferred to a computer by Signals generated in the brain BCI may be based on ECoG signals (electrocortiogram), MEG signals (magnetoencephalography), PET signals (positron emission tomography), fMRI signals (functional magnetic resonance), NIRS signals (optical imaging) or others Most commonly, BCI is based on EEG signals Among the most common BCI applications are touchless controlling of electronic devices, touchless computer operating (including touchless Internet searching), biometric user authentication and process controlling by people with reduced mobility. This article presents the concept of using the brain-computer interface, which uses EEG signals to monitor selected emotional states of a worker, such as mental engagement, thought, frustration, excitement. The concept is based on the use of a neurohelmet, which uses simplified electroencephalography.

The organisation of psychiatric care in our country, apart from the low level of its financing, is the main barrier that hampers the access to services to patients with psychiatric disorders. In the past, the model of isolation predominated in treatment. Contemporary science proposes an environmental model of psychiatry which is an optimal solution for the patients and their families. The reconstruction of the system was to be provided through effective realisation of the Psychiatric Health Protection System in the years 2011-2015. In her article, the author discusses the details of the Programme, and she presents the reasons for missing its objectives and tasks that were spotted during the NIK audit.

The aim of this paper was to present how mental symptoms are connected to the use of desktop, portable or minicomputers (communicators and hand-held computers), mobile phones, and background information such as age and gender in the Finnish working-age population. The study was carried out as a cross-sectional study by posting a questionnaire to 15 000 working-age (18–65) Finns. The mental symptoms of 6 121 respondents were analysed using the model factors age, gender, the use of computers and the use of mobile phones. In all data, the use of desktop computers was related to mental symptoms. However, the results of our data are not highly reliable, because the nonresponse rate was over 50%. Nevertheless, it may be essential to take into account in the future that working with computers can increase workers’ mental symptoms, and it is important to observe their mental health.

The article is an attempt at searching for theoretical basics for effective foreign language learning. The starting point for the considerations is the bilingual model, which is a subordinate and coordinate method of organizing linguistic material of the mother tongue and foreign language. Formation of bilingual (Polish-Russian) mental glossary of a learner is treated as a mental process and effectiveness of its reorganization is based on the concept of the frame. The author’s considerations are illustrated with an analysis of selected teaching resources for teaching Russian as a foreign language to Polish students.

Adolescence is a time of particular susceptibility to mental disorders. A programme aimed at facilitating emotional development in teenagers might be an important element of prophylactic psychopathology targeting young people. The activities proposed here are group activities and have several aims: to develop the ability to become self-aware regarding one's emotions and regulate their intensity; to foster an attitude of caring for oneself; and to teach problem-solving. What is of particular significance is shaping young people’s habits in being proactive in their personal development.

According to the microgenetic stance, each following instant of perception gradually grows out from the each preceding one and is essentially a continual part of it. It is difficult to exclusively differentiate past, present and future in perception, because in the currently experienced mental reality past, present and future overlap, with no very clear borders in between. However, in the practical domain these theoretical underpinnings remain useless unless we support them by specific experimental data about the more or less precise values of measurements characterizing the real-time constraints and ranges within which the microgenetic perception unfolds. Here, the general theoretical picture of perceptual microgenesis will be supplemented with some simple data on the quantitative aspects of actual microgenesis. I will review some experimental measurements of perceptual microgenesis such as the real-time values of microgenesis, typical orders with which different characteristics of the same object/event unfold, arbitrariness with which the objective order is transformed to a subjective order, the phenomenon of proactive facilitation. Microgenetic stance will be discussed also in light of the issue of neural correlates of consciousness.

Abstract Background Representatives of helping professions who are working with socially maladjusted youths and children with developmental disorders are particularly exposed to occupational stress. The aim of the study was to evaluate mental and physical well-being, as well as their correlates and predictors in a group of employees working at youth educational centres and sociotherapy centres. Materials and Methods A total of 96 employees working at youth educational centres and sociotherapy centres took part in the study. The following psychometric tools were used: the Psychosocial Working Conditions Questionnaire, the Mini-COPE, the LOT-R, and the GSES. Results The results obtained indicate that people working in helping professions experience mental and physical health problems. Only 3% of the subjects declared they sleep all night. Over 40% and over 35% of the subjects estimate they suffer from low mood and irritation episodes, respectively, rather frequently or continually. Subjects with poorer mental health are more likely to use Helplessness, Avoidance behaviours, or Turning to religion to cope with stress. The strongest predictor of mental well-being is the sense of self-efficacy. Whereas, the strongest predictor of physical well-being is the ability to cope with stress by giving into the feeling of Helplessness.   Conclusions The study demonstrated poor mental and physical well-being of the subjects. A statistically significant correlation was found between sex and the level of mental and physical health. Employees working at youth educational centres and sociotherapy centres with better mental and physical well-being had a stronger sense of self-efficacy and a higher level of life optimism.

Today, the more trainers are satisfied with their work, the more they are encouraged to work harder and also the more the efficiency of schools rises. On the other hand, dissatisfaction and low levels of the performances of teachers derive in turn from their lack of satisfaction. As previous researches show, dissatisfied employees give up their jobs and leave the organization. And satisfied employees enjoy mental health and live longer, and being satisfied and happy can affect the employees beyond their offices and have an effect on their personal lives. On that account, this research aims to examine the impact that job satisfaction has on the mental health of teachers. The method used in this study was a descriptive-explanatory one. The research sample consists of 332 teachers in the province of Mazandaran, Iran. The dare were collected using questionnaires and the results showed that there is a meaningful relationship between job satisfaction and mental health of the studied teachers.

Objectives: The objective of this article is to present a research protocol to explore mental health care in the Moroccan immigrant collective. Methods: The study will be carried out through a qualitative perspective under a combination of the phenomenological approach and ethnomethodology. The selection of participants will be carried out by non-probabilistic sampling. Several types of profiles will participate in the study, both healthcare professionals and Moroccan patients, and semi-structured interviews will be conducted. Findings: The application of this research protocol will increase the knowledge about mental health care in the Moroccan immigrant group. By having health professionals more knowledge about it, they can create more specific health promotion and prevention programs for the Moroccan group, helping them in their adaptation process and reducing the stress and/or anxiety of the process. Conclusions: It is recommended to carry out this research protocol in different health centers to obtain reliable conclusions about mental health care in the Moroccan immigrant collective

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between workaholism and mental health among 126 Polish academic workers. The participantsʼ mean age was 45.9 years, 51.6% of them were women. The participants completed 2 questionnaires: the work addiction risk test and the general health questionnaire. Even though 66% of the subjects were classified in the group of moderate-to-high risk of workaholism, the overall state of mental health was categorized as average. The results revealed that workaholism was associated with poorer mental health. Employees with higher levels of workaholism had worse state of health, i.e., more somatic symptoms, higher levels of anxiety, insomnia, social dysfunction and symptoms of depression. Emotional arousal/perfectionism was the strongest predictor of the state of general health and was mostly responsible for harmful effects on mental health. However, the general effect of workaholism on health was not as strong as expected.

There are data showing clinical experience as disadvantageous for the quality of mental health assessment. On the other hand, according to American Psychological Association standards of evidence-based practice in psychology, clinical experience is one of the fundamental factors in professional psychological practice. The paper presents this controversy in the context of relevant psychological knowledge and empirical data. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the valuable input that clinical experience may bring to mental health assessment is intuitive thinking; (2) habitual cognitive errors and mindlessness, which are the possible side effects of long-lasting diagnostic practice, can be reduced by means of careful self-monitoring of the assessment process. A practical self-monitoring procedure is suggested.

Opis:
The situation of the mentally ill changed significantly at the end of the eighteenth and in the nineteenth century, the era that saw a gradual dissemination of humanitarian ideas. In Prussia, the humanitarian reforms began in the early nineteenth century and resulted in the establishment of several institutions for the mentally ill, which were to appear in all provinces of the Hohenzollern monarchy. One of these facilities was the institution in Darłowo (Rügenwalde), which was established in 1842. The aim of the paper is to answer the question whether the humanitarian proposals were implemented in practice. To date, Polish researchers have studied these issues only in the context of the Province of Silesia and Province of Posen. The application of the comparative method and the analysis of the documents, including rules and guidelines for the facility in Darłowo, have demonstrated that the implementation of the reforms in the Province of Pomerania was significantly delayed. The facility in Darłowo was not meant as an institution for treating patients with mental illness until the 1860s. The organisation of the staff, little or no variety in categorising patients, and slim chances of leaving the facility indicate that its main aim was to isolate patients from the society. The humanitarian ideas can be deemed to have been implemented only as of 1863, i.e. after the institution had been reorganised. It was then that the main task of the facility became to effectively and non-violently treat the mentally ill and enable their return to society.

Cognition of other minds in perspective of mental representations resonance theoryThe goal of the article is to investigate the connection between naturalization of mental representations and cognition of other minds. It presents arguments for the thesis that delineating relations between physical states of the brain and mental content may be a key to understanding the issues of mental representation and a starting point for empirically validated inferences about other’s subjective experience. The paper discusses possibilities of applying across brains resonance theory in predicting phenomenal and conceptual content of other minds. Outlining conditions for establishing objective knowledge about subjectivity, it sketches the interdisciplinary research program of neurophenomenology.

Objectives: The purpose of this research was to study the role of mental imagery and stress management training in the performance of female swimmers. Methods: The present study included 30 female amateur swimmers (age range 12-15 years) of the swimming team of Zahedan (Iran). A total of 15 swimmers were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the other 15 to the control group. The experimental group received mental imagery and stress management training. Stress management was assessed with the Short Form of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), mental imagery was evaluated with the Movement Imagery Questionnaire-Revised (MIQ-R), and swimming performance swimming front crawl 25 meters. Findings: After the intervention program, the participants of the experimental group significantly improved their DASS-21 scores (mean difference between pre-test and post-test = 4.37), their MIQ-R scores (mean difference between pre-test and post-test = 4.54) and their swimming performance (mean difference between pre-test and post-test = 0.83 seconds). Conclusions: Mental imagery and stress management training can significantly improve the performance of female swimmers. These results should be considered by swimmers and coaches and should be applied to swimming training.

Mindful leadership is a competency of the future which enables leaders to effectively function in a challenging and changing VUCA world by being able to focus their attention in three directions: at themselves, at others and at what is happening around them. Mindfulness facilitates intra and interpersonal skills, increases mental fortitude and resistance to time and performance pressure, as well as the ability to think rationally and creatively, which helps us make faster, more rational and innovative decisions to achieve a competitive advantage. Mindfulness also helps us look after co-workers and our own welfare, making it an important factor in preventing occupational burnout. The article assumes an evidence-based approach which, based on the state of the research, indicates that it is viable to conduct positive interventions using a robust theoretical framework and documented empirical research results.

W pracy podjęto próbę określenia wzajemnych relacji między rodzajem czynności związanej z pracą informatyka uwzględniającą hierarchię służbową osób a stopniem znużenia psychicznego i wskaźnikiem rezerwy tętna.
In the thesis there have been attempted to define mutual relations between kind of activity associated with computer work taking into consideration the office hierarchy of persons and psychological workload, heart rate reserve and blood pressure. Examinations had been tacked a place in the national company with increased the operation of information systems standards. Employees fulfilled stages of process concerned with information systems maintenance through specific logic test. Pulse and blood pressure measurements give information about psychological and psychical tiredness and about stress which also occurred during the experiment. The conclusion was as follows: with increasing the period of time of intellectual work, was increasing the period of time required for logic task execution and the number of mistakes was increasing too. Moreover, in case of activities which was performed under time pressure can be observed the highest heart rate variability. With each subsequent test of the similar logic construction followed learning process of examination people. This was the reason better scores in the following tests. Psychical load associated with computer work determined with the WRT rate was low.

Immeasurable symbolic values of a local space constitute the basis and motive for designing mental maps. Mental maps consist of universal elements (e.g. communication paths, area borders) and particular geographical categories (e.g. world directions, known and characteristic towns). The latter are the centre of connotations, and the source of metaphors for characterising local cultural areas at the level of mental maps. The analysis of Bielsko-Biała reveals representations of this town as Manchester, Vienna, and Berlin, as well as the representations of the fragments of spaces of other town such as Paris and New York. In each scale and in each case, mental maps reflect the socio-cultural characteristic of the local space.

Introduction and objective. Adapting to gynaecological cancer is the problem of accepting and coping with the disease and its consequences. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between stress intensity and strategies for coping with stress and psychological adaptation to disease in women diagnosed with gynaecological cancer. Materials and method. The study was performed on a group of 102 women diagnosed with gynaecologic malignancy. The mean age of patients was 56.1 (SD ±10.75) years. Three self- designed questionnaires were used to carry out the study: Scale of Perceived Stress (PSS-10), Multidimensional Inventory for Measuring Coping with Stress (Mini-COPE) and the Scale of Mental Adaptation to Cancer (Mini-MAC). Statistical significance was set at p <0.05. Results. In more than half of the women surveyed, the severity of stress experienced during the last month was high. Women with a malignant illness significantly differed (p<0.001) in the styles of coping with the disease, preferring a constructive style (M=43.5; SD±5.76) rather than a destructive style (M=21.7; SD±5.28). The highest median values were obtained by positive revalidation (M=21.9; SD±3.01) and fighting spirit (M=21.6; SD±3.47) strategies. The most prominent indicator of predicting a constructive style of coping with cancer was the coping strategy described as Positive Revalidation (ßeta=0.38; R²=0.41); whereas an Acceptance strategy was a predictor of a destructive style (ßeta=-0.30; R²=0.31). Conclusions. Most women facing gynaecological cancer experience a high level of stress, and try to use active strategies to deal with the disease. The results indicate that there is a need to offer special psychological care to oncologically diagnosed women.

The author considers the problem of creating images, namely its psychological and ontological aspects. Based on the assumption that mental representation is not a mimetic reproduction of objective reality, but a reference to mutually imputed collective knowledge, the author discusses various factors of this situation. The concept proposed by the author is based on presumption that the measure of the compatibility of the image and its designate is the content dispersion occurring in society, i.e. the number of different points of view. In the constructivist model, imaging is based on communication as a modus of the social system, in this case there is a diversification of viewpoints, and the compatibility of the image with its designate is close to 0.

Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate mental health and coping strategies among nursing staff in two public hospitals of Greece. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 318 nurses working in two public hospitals in Attica, Greece from February 2017 to May 2017. Data were collected using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire (GAD-2) and the Greek version of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The data were presented as mean and standard deviation and analyzed through student tâ“test, chi-square, and descript_ive statistics using SPSS Version 21.0. The significance level was accepted as P values <0.05. Results: Data analysis revealed that 44% of nurses were suffering from depression and 40.3% from anxiety, with the type of hospital (p≤ 0.001) and marital status (p = 0.031) affecting stress levels. Conclusions: Working in mental health hospital and married nurses were the main risk factors for manifestation of anxiety/depression symptoms among nursing staff. Individual nurse characteristics, such as working experience as well as working environment (general and mental health hospital) were found to be associated with the nurses’ coping strategies in their attempt to deal with their work.

The aim of the article is to employ results from philosophy of mind and cognitive sciences in order to answer certain questions from the field of philosophy of art. What is specifically at issue is the problem of the cognitive underpinnings of subject’s relation to narrative fictions presented in novels and movies. A proposal according to which this relation is mediated by mental simulation is critically assessed. The author discusses two theses that are based on this general simulationist idea, namely theses that (1) a person engaged in reading a novel or watching a movie simulates mental states of the protagonists (empathizes with them); (2) the simulation mechanism underlies the ability to imagine fictional events presented in narratives.

Opis:
The main purpose of the proposed paper is to analyze paradigms (theoretical frames) of leadership owned and used by school principals. The analysis is based on the results of the research conducted for the purpose of defining and describing the school principals’ way of thinking about leadership for education. For the purpose of building framework for research it was assumed that four leadership paradigms might be defined. Leadership might be understood through classic paradigm of leadership (domination of the significant person or elite group); or transactional paradigm (influence and negotiations); or visionary paradigm (called sometimes charismatic where the most import ant is clear vision); or organic paradigm (existing in multicultural and diverse world where leadership is flexible and leaders change dependently on a situation) Three methods have been used: interview with 99 principals of schools (of different type), observation in the same number of schools and analyses of the blogs (written on-line by school principals). It is common to ignore the mental models (or paradigms) used by people what brings certain outcomes for every initiative. It is necessary for policy making, change projects or developmental initiatives to recognize and take under consideration the diversity of possible perspectives (mental models) owned by those who are working in the concerned area, in this case head teachers. Civilization changes influence context and demands towards schools. Those challenges impact the modernization of schools. One of the common expectation towards management are more open - participative mode of the decision making process and the involvement of employees in sharing responsibilities. Unfortunately different initiatives towards inclusion of employees into management and leadership processes bring rather disappointing results because they ignore ideologies and assumptions of people who decide about school functioning. Analysis of the results of the research should improve the understanding of the school reality by showing strategies and decisions adequate to the state of “educational consciousness”.

One of the most common causes of disability of Slovak people is mental illness. According to psychologists, this trend lasts for several years and the situation is not improving. The cause is mainly lifestyle. In the entire World are suffering from depression over 110 million men and women. It is the most common psychological disorder. Numbers of depressed patients increase by 3% every year. Depression affects many people of working age, regardless of their social and economic status. Up to 15% of people suffering from depression attempt suicide and only 25% seek out profes- sional psychiatric help. This disease belongs to the man as well as an ap- pendix. Depression is not just an ordinary grief that gnaws at the soul of man. In the care of the mentally ill has the nurse in communicating a very im- portant place. Skills of nurses should be at a level such that she under- stands the patient, supports him, could effectively intervene at any time and, if necessary, be close to patient. It is primarily she who spends most of his time with the patient.

Psychoeducation is being used in many areas of life today. In addition to development stimulation and promotion of health and prevention, it has also been used in the rehabilitation of people with disabilities and in the treatment of patients with chronic diseases as well as with mental disorders.Especially in the case of mental disorders it is necessary to integrate psychological, psychiatric and pedagogical activities. It can be said, that psychoeducation is the platform of practical integration of the aforementioned disciplines. Psychoeducational activities complete the process of treatment and rehabilitation, and in the case of mental disorders are an integral part of therapy. Psychoeducation in the treatment of people with mental disorders is treated as a form of psychological help. It is designed for patients and their families and friends. Its goal is not only to increase the knowledge about the disease and its treatment but also, or more specifically to develop all skills that will successfully deal with the condition of the disease, recognize ones feelings, reduce stress, and improve communication with the doctor, etc. In addition, psychoeducation is a permanent element of holistic rehabilitation of people with disabilities. For example, psychoeducation of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder has the role of supporting the development of executive skills, self-help skills, independence, communication skills and interpersonal skills. Therefore, in summary psychoeducation includes different areas of functioning, that fall within the framework of skills development and knowledge acquisition.

In the text, I look at the processes of psychiatrization as they unfold within social policies implemented in Poland. The presented ethnographic description focuses on the institution of adoption. I am telling the story of a young girl adopted as an infant. By creating an ethnographic commentary on the story, I raise the issues of epistemic inequalities, diagnostic cultures, biological reductionism and biopolitical bureaucracy. Methodologically, my analysis is based on in-depth interviews with the adoptive parents, the adopted girl and the people taking care of her at the youth educational centre, as well as numerous diagnostic documents developed by experts co-creating the system of social care in Poland.

Over the last years, the Supreme Audit Office has conducted several audits related to selected elements of schools’ activities in similar areas. These audits confirmed, among others, the ineffectiveness of school pathologies prevention, emerging new dangers (e.g. cyberbullying), and insufficient support for talented students. NIK also negatively assessed the way in which the Minister of National Education performed the tasks set out in the National Programme for Mental Health Protection. The audit showed that in the years 2011-2015 the Minister realised only two out of nine tasks related to mental health promotion and mental disorders prevention that the Ministry was obliged to fulfil. As a result, NIK carried out a comprehensive follow up audit aimed both at examining the scope of psychological assistance provided to pupils, and at presenting the way in which the functioning of schools has an impact on their mental health.

Objectives The authors used the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) and general health questionnaire to analyze the factors influencing the mental health status and the workload of support nurses during the COVID-19 epidemic. Material and Methods The authors conducted a cross-sectional survey of 349 support nurses in April–October 2022. Using QuestionStar, a powerful online survey tool, the authors administered surveys to the participants, collected data on the mental health status and workload of support nurses, and analyzed the influencing factors based on the collected data. Results A total of 316 questionnaires were successfully collected, with an effective rate of 98.75%. The proportion of support nurses with mental health problems was 25% and the value of the NASA-TLX questionnaire was: M±SD 68.91±7.28 pts. Multi-factor analysis revealed that the number of children, family support, and nursing support location were the influencing factors of mental health status, while the multivariate analysis revealed that the presence of symptoms, nursing support location, support work type, and total 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) score were the influencing factors of the workload of support nurses. Conclusions Compared to their counterparts in the plains, nurses working in isolated plateau regions who were caring for children and lacked family support, were more likely to have mental health issues. There was a positive correlation between the changes in GHQ-12 and NASA-TLX scores of the study participants. Compared to their counterparts in the plains and the tropical regions, nurses working in plateau regions had a heavier workload. As part of the follow-up measures to prevent and treat patients impacted by the COVID-19 epidemic, it is important to improve the mental health evaluation, consultation, and treatment of the support nurses to guarantee the high quality of the first-line support work.

In order to help and save the lives of seafarers, the researchers conducted a developmental research to formally create a booklet in e-copy that is a simple, situational, and handy source of knowledge. This study aimed to identify the component of the booklet based on the study of Sarinas et al. [1] in terms of the factors affecting the seafarers’ mental health and strategies they applied to counteract these issues. The ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model was utilized to develop a booklet. A content validated researcher-made instruments were used to measure the satisfaction of seafarers over the booklet and the acceptability of the experts on the booklet with a reliability index of 0.91 using Cronbach alpha. The content analysis was employed to determine the factors affecting seafarers’ mental health and the strategies to counteract these factors. Meanwhile, frequency, percentage, rank, mean, and standard deviation were used as the statistical tools. Results revealed that, there are 30 factors included in the booklet in the Analysis phase with various situational strategies to combat the factors affecting the mental health of seafarers. Moreover, in the Design phase, there were 10 factors added with corresponding strategies emanated from instructors who were seafarers previously and from experts in mental health. In the Development phase, the booklet made use of the 4 E (Engage, Explore, Explain, and Evaluation) while for the Implementation phase, the e-copy of booklets were given to seafarers as well as the evaluation form for them to assess the booklet and indicate their level of satisfaction. In the Evaluation phase, it shows that seafarers’ level of satisfaction towards the booklet is “Very High” which means that seafarers find the overall appearance and content of the supplemental learning material excellent.

Opis:
This article synthesizes the legal doubts that arise against the background of the draft law on amendments to the Law on Mental Health Protection. The considerations undertaken by the author focus on the proposed changes in psychiatric terminology, the premises for the use of direct coercive measures and the procedure for the use of direct coercive measures. The author analyzes the assumptions of the draft amendments to the Law on Mental Health Protection from the point of view of the situation of patients with mental disorders. Due to the nature of the proposed solutions, as well as criticism of the current law, the author enters into a polemic with the position presented by the authors of the project and proposes de lege ferenda postulates. The entire discussion is crowned with a conclusion, in which attention is drawn to the lack of linguistic precision on the part of the drafters. This may contribute to a restriction of the rights and freedoms of patients with mental disorders.

Opis:
Teleosemantyka łączy wyjaśnienie nadawania treści z zagadnieniem intencjonalności stanów mentalnych i tezą o reprezentacyjnym charakterze poznania.
This paper deals with the issue of explaining cognition in representational theories of mind and teleosemantics in particular, which is the most advanced representationalist account of mental content. The criticism of representational theories from the standpoint of embodied cognition means that the assumptions and theses of the former should be analyzed in terms of the adequacy and success of this approach The main assumption of the representational approach is the thesis that cognitive processes such as perception, conceptual thinking, knowledge, etc. rely on the creation and manipulation of mental representations. The material components of mental representations are neuronal states of the brain (e.g., neuronal stimulation patterns), which are carriers of cognitive content. The main problem with this approach is to explain the attribution of content to brain states that act as representations. Teleosemantics combines the explanation of content attribution with the intentionality of mental states and the thesis about the representational character of cognition. As a starting point, the relationships that occur between the general concept of representation and intentionality are discussed. The general structure of representation meets the conditions of intentionality both in the sense of aboutness and in the sense of referring to an intentional object. The problems to address here concern the formation of representational relations and the attribution of content to states of the brain. Next, the paper examines the solution to these problems proposed by R. Millikan in her theory of teleosemantics. She sees the source of intentionality in the biological functions of acquiring information necessary for the survival of an agent. These functions are fulfilled by relations constituting mental representations. The semantics of mental representations is given by the purpose of biological functions, whereas the truth conditions are correlated with properties of the environment. The final part of the paper is devoted to discussing the limitations of this approach and presenting a criticism from the anti-representationalist position. In turn, this will lead us to the conclusion that teleosemantics, by developing a relational understanding of representation, introduces an important element to the explanation of cognition. It combines the concept of intentionality with the representation of the world in the mind. However, it does not yet give a full an answer to the question of content attribution, nor should it be treated as the only and definitive way to solve the problem of content. Rather, teleosemantics should be regarded as one of the available proposals explaining the intentionality of mental content.

Artykuł prezentuje dwa modele przedsiębiorczości: tradycyjny (kauzalny) i efektuacyjny.
The article presents two models of entrepreneurship: the traditional (causal) and the effectuation model. In the causal model, strategic planning and competitiveness are considered to be crucial for the venture’s success. In the effectuation model the basis for success is the use of available resources, flexible response to emerging opportunities and building relationships. The aim of the article is to assess the congruence of the mental model of entrepreneurship held by students with the effectuation model. In the conducted research the emphasis was placed on four elements of the mental model: company’s strategy, utilisation of its resources, attitude to risk and attitude to other entities operating on the market. A questionnaire containing 39 items referring to the above-mentioned aspects was used. Participants assessed the extent to which those items described an effective business enterprise. The results indicate that students’ mental model is more congruent with the causal approach. The only aspect that integrates certain elements of causal, as well as effectual assumptions, is company’s strategy. Some differences in man and woman mental model were discovered. Results of the research were used to develop recommendations for shaping entrepreneurial attitudes which include: the need to develop effectual approach in Polish students’ entrepreneurial education, especially in the area of effectual coopetition, treating risk as a safety brake and focusing on possessed resources

Introduction and aim. Individuals with severe mental illness experience more physical health problems than the general population and their life expectancy may be shorter. Therefore, the physical care provided to these patients is very important. This study aims to examine the attitudes, practices, and training needs of nurses working in psychiatry clinics towards physical health care of individuals with severe mental illness. Material and methods. This descriptive, cross-sectional study collected data from 139 nurses in psychiatry clinics using the Personal Information Form and Physical Health Attitude Scale. Results. This study found that nurses often provide physical healthcare as part of their routine care for individuals with severe mental illness. However, the study also revealed that nurses require additional education to better provide this type of care. Despite this, the nurses generally displayed a positive attitude towards physical health. The average total score on the physical health attitude scale was 80.33±10.14. Conclusion. The study concluded that nurses have a positive attitude towards physical health in general. The role of nurses working in psychiatry clinics is crucial in evaluating and caring for physical health of individuals with severe mental illness, as it is an important aspect of holistic nursing care. It is necessary to make nurses aware of their shortcomings in providing physical health care and support them in improving in this area.

The presented study aims to compare occupational stress of 50 teachers and 56 firefighters. Both these groups are laden with high exposure to work-related stress. For assessing the occupational load the Meister questionnaire was used. We found that teachers percieved their occupational stress worse than firefighters and reached the 2nd degree of load. They complained mostly about the factor of overload and factors of the stress reactions – fatigue, mental overload and unacceptability to perform pedagogical work in the same intensity for a long time. Firefighters achieved better results (1st degree of load), even better than the population norm. An explanation may be found in the fact that firefighters represent a selected population of emotionally, psychically and physically resistant individuals.

Introduction. Schizophrenia to a considerably great degree impairs the social functioning of the persons affected in the spheres of interpersonal and occupational contacts, as well as self-care. It brings about serious cognitive, perceptual, motor and emotional deficits, inevitably leading to the social withdrawal of patients. This phenomenon may assume various forms, from the limitations in interpersonal relations, through narrowing these relations to only some circumstances, to the total cessation of social contacts. Objective. The objective of the study is presentation of the most important problems related with social functioning and quality of life of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, based on scientific studies conducted in Poland and worldwide. State of knowledge. The family of a schizophrenia patient exerts a great effect on the social functioning. While undertaking proper actions the family may become a co-therapist and significantly facilitate the patient’s adjustment to life in society and his/her playing a specified role. Analysis of disorders in social functioning of patients with schizophrenia, in the context of social cognition, indicates the fact that these disorders have their source in the lack of capabilities for identification of own and other people’s internal states, whereas mentalization is the essence of social cognition. Conclusions. Therapy, any psychosocial impact as well as rehabilitation, neutralizes the causes for patients’ withdrawal from social life. Training of social skills is necessary which teaches patients to return to the situation when they would be able to function properly in their environment.

The article deals with the subject of students’ mental health, which has been so relevant in recent years. It is based on Furlong’s concept and theory of socio-emotional health. We tried to discover relations between dimensions and their indicators of socio-emotional health and subjective happiness with orientation to Slovak secondary school students. We used the Social-Emotional Health Survey questionnaire, version for adolescents (SEHS-S), and our results solidly confirmed a positive relationship between experiencing happiness and dimensions of socio-emotional health.

Based on the South Slavonic hagiographic literature, the terms physician and healer are defined and specified. The study focuses on the mental disease (insanity), which according to the methodology of Larchet is three types: somatic nature of madness, the madness of demonic origin, and madness of spiritual origin. Also partly concerns the problem of God fools’ insanity.

Ample research has been done on rumination and mental health. However, minimum effort has been exerted to investigate these variables among parents of differently-abled children. The presented study investigates the relationship between rumination and mental health among parents of differently-abled children. The study also aimed to revisit the psychometric characteristics of the rumination scale. Two hundred parents were selected from different rehabilitation schools of the Kashmir Valley. The mean age and standard deviation of the respondents were 40.04 and 5.31, respectively. Results of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) indicated that model fit for the rumination scale was poor (c2 /df = 2.33; CFI =.65; AGFI;.76; RMSEA;.08; TLI;.61), whereas the model fit of the mental health was excellent. A negative relationship was found between rumination and mental health on the composite score as well as on their dimensions.

Depression is not a popular philosophical problem, despite the fact that it is one of the most frequent psychopathologies nowadays. The aim of the article is to consider the problem of depression as a philosophical one in terms of Cheshire Calhoun’s analytic work on depression and S.ren Kierkegaard’s philosophy of despair and anxiety. The author shows that the state of depression is connected to the sick man’s failure to be a living being due to the process that Calhoun calls “the defeat of an agency”. Calhoun claims that a man stops to be an active person because his will is disengaged due to his feeling of estrangement from his normative outlook of self-conception, his disbelief in the effectiveness of instrumental reasoning and lack of confidence in one’s security from misfortune and harm. The permanent state of this defeat leads to being disengaged from one’s very roots of being a motivated person. At this point living the being is opened to despair and anxiety, which are the means of creating a state of being as a “defeated agency”. The analysis of Kierkegaard’s work brings a new perspective of depression. A depressed person is one who is possessed by despair and anxiety. The analysis of different forms of despair and anxiety bring new light to the process of becoming depressed. It shows that the depressed person is in a permanent state of being “cut off” from life. This perspective leads to the conclusion that depression could be seen as Kierkegaard’s „Sickness Unto Death”.

Empirical research shows that chronic diseases have specific, idiosyncratic functions in the family, and give real, psychosocial advantages (like tightening loosened family relations or helping solve interpersonal conflicts). This leaves the question – can schizophrenic disorders have similar function in the family system as a chronic somatic disease? We have analyzed systemic family traits in families with schizophrenic young patients (50 families). The reference samples were two kinds of families: families with schizophrenic adults and families without any chronic disease or chronic illness (“healthy families”). The subjects of analysis were coefficients of the systemic features, identified by factor analysis according to author’s proposal. Oneway Anova was used to compare indexes between three groups of families. The results show that mental disorder in adolescents participates in the life of the whole family, having similar functions to the functions of chronic somatic diseases. They also suggest that, from the family members’ point of view, schizophrenic disorders in a teenagers has different quality compared to schizophrenic disorders in an adult.

When observing the contemporary world, one cannot fail to notice that in many areas of life, not only in the personal lives of particular people, but also within the public and social aspects of human existence, conflict seems to be fairly omnipresent. This paper sets to analyse the discussed concept in the Polish language from two different perspectives. The first stage of the research deals with the analysis of the immediate linguistic vicinity of the notion of konflikt / conflict to search for the location of the aforementioned phenomenon within the Polish linguistic system. The aim of this research is to present what types of domains are employed to conceptualise konflikt / conflict. The analysis is based on the selected corpus data found in the Polish language. The second stage of the research comprises the analysis of 183 surveys containing two elements: the definitions of konflikt / conflict and the association maps referring to this concept created by students at the age of 16-24. The aim of this task is to search for the associations attached to the discussed phenomenon by young people, and the similarities and differences within the definitions suggested by them.

The research was conducted in 2016 among 100 working adults. The method applied was the one of a diagnostic survey, with an authorial questionnaire. The results show that the desire of health improvement and a reduction of the negative influence of tension both have a significant influence on the choice of holiday destination. Over half of the respondents experience stress several times a week, or even every day. The main reason for nervous tension, pointed out by both men and women, is their work. The respondents confirmed experiencing numerous somatic symptoms of stress. The majority of the interlocutors perceive positive influence of a vacation on their mental condition. Expanding tourism offers towards improvement of the mental dimension of health may constitute an important element in promotion of pro-health lifestyle.

In the last decade, the growing interest in the subject of musicians’ mental practice has produced a significant increase in research on mental and instrumental practice. More than half of all the studies concerns professional musicians, and relatively little research is conducted on children or adolescents. The article will describe research on the mental practice of teenagers attending music schools in Poland and Germany. Questionnaire surveys answer the question of whether young people use mental practice, how they do it, and what the content of mental training while practicing an instrument is. The analysis suggests that gifted adolescents from both countries (1) do not use mental rehearsal very often and (2) use mental practice strategies in a similar way. What they differ in is the frequency of using mental practice as an integral part of their instrumental learning, using musical-analytical strategy, and the quality of mental practice. The study indicates the need to teach mental practice and its importance in increasing the effectiveness of instrumental practice.

A sample of 160 Polish unemployed persons aged 35 to 45 years filled in self-descriptive measures of EI and mental health. Significant gender differences were found – unemployed women were characterised by a greater intensity of mental health disorders than unemployed men. EI was negatively correlated with mental health disorders, but the correlations were few and weaker than expected. However, when unemployed persons with a low, average and high EI were compared, it turned out that participants with a low EI were characterised by a significantly worse condition of mental health than participants with a average or high EI.

The authors in this contribution deal with the most common mental illness in the elderly and their risks. Mental or psychological disorder is the term for a significant departure from the perceptions and behavior of mentally healthy individuals. In old age are relatively broad spectrum of mental disorders. The most common clinical forms of mental disorders in the elderly are dementia, depression and de- lirium. Dementias are disorders that arise after formation of the base of cognitive function, i.e. after the fourth to the sixth year of life. The most commom form of dementia is Alzheimer‘s disease. In second place are vascular dementia. Vascular dementia has several clinical forms according to the localization of the brain affected. Depressive disorders are coupled with cognitive impairments most common psychiatric disease the elderly. What is important is the prevention of depression in old age, especially in high-risk groups. It recommends the creation of an appropriate program for seniors with plenty of physical and mental activity and social contacts, timely and proper treatment of somatic illness. Seniors depressive disorders are major psychiatric disorder with a variety of negative consequences. It needs to be thinking, actively seek out and properly treated. Delirium are not part of dementia. However, often occurs as a complicating symptoms of dementia. Addictive disorders in old age are nothing exceptional. In particular, the abuse of alcohol, benzodiazepine, analgesics.

Congenital aphantasia, or the complete absence of mental imagery, is a topic that has recently aroused the interest of researchers in many fields including philosophy, psychology and cognitive sciences. While it is generally supposed that we all have rich mental lives full of imaged representations, estimates suggest 2-3% of the population may have never formed an image or seen ‘in the mind’s eye.’ This paper aims to address the scepticism surrounding aphantasia, the challenges in communicating about mental imagery, and the research methods used in cognitive sciences today through the lens of Wittgenstein’s philosophy. The paper argues that 1) communicating about mental imagery involves language games that persons with aphantasia may not be able to play (i.e., makes reference to expressions and concepts that are meaningless for them, such as ‘visualise,’ ‘form an image,’ etc.); 2) that as a consequence aphantasia, in present research, is only describable negatively (as lack or incapacity); 3) that rather than a cognitive or a psychological issue, aphantasia should be understood as a grammatical one; and 4) that we need to invent new language games in order to come to a better understanding of conditions such as aphantasia, and to be able to appreciate the rich diversity and variability of human experience.

This paper is devoted to illustrating how process neuropsychology and neurolinguistics, based on microgenetic theory androoted in process thought, can help to explain the often baffling symptomatology of brain damage. Our purpose is to present an overview of this difficult and complex subject matter for readers, with particular emphasis on its creative potential. The essence of microgenetic theory in neuropsychology is an account of the phases in brain process through which successive mind/brain states arise and perish over the duration of the psychological present, measured in milliseconds. According to the theory, mental states are rhythmically generated out of a “core” in the anatomically deepest and phylogenetically oldest parts of the central nervous system, over phases to the outermost and youngest regions of the brain, the neocortex. The clinical applications are only one aspect of the creative potential of microgenetic theory. Indeed, the elegance of the theory consists in the way in which it can be extended into a number of different fields of endeavor, providing a kind of “unified field theory” for the explanation of often rather diverse phenomena. This provides an opportunity for neuropsychology and neurolinguistics to resume the interdisciplinary discourse they were founded to conduct.

The emotional functioning of older people depends on many factors. Diverse and rich activity every day seems to be very important. Undertaking a large number of activities at an elderly age and fulfilling oneself in social roles (also ones newly started) is a condition for efficient functioning, life satisfaction, well-being and health. Older people are at risk of social exclusion, being unnecessary for others or even being a burden on one’s surroundings. Hence, support and inclusion programs for various tasks and activities become extremely important. The aim of the presented research was to present proposals and evaluate the effects of a program dedicated to seniors, which was to improve their quality of life, psychophysical and social health. The program involved 50 seniors from 2 different support centers, including 43 women and 7 men, average age 77.51 ± 9.51. The assessment used the SUPIN questionnaire (Positive and Negative Feelings Scale), MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination) and the VAS pain scale. The obtained results confirmed the beneficial effect of the proposed activation program on the psychophysical health of the respondents. All subjects increased their level of positive emotions, while the level of negative ones decreased (p <0.05), hand functionality and general well-being improved, back and pain significantly decreased.

Opis:
Nowadays, due to the continuous development of psychological sciences, we observe an increase of the interest in imagination, and undoubtedly the role of imagination in mental simulations. When exploring the issues of the subject matter, it is necessary to note that the ideas of imagination and ideas were for a long time neglected in research and analyzes. To a certain extent, this is reflected in the literature on the subject of this research topic; however, in my opinion, in both Polish and foreign literature, there aren’t sufficient scientific studies devoted to this issue and its potential impact on the life of every human being. The principal aim of this work is to analyze the idea of imaginations presented in Petrażycki’s theory – their nature, functions and types – and to discuss mental simulations and examples of their use. In addition, another relevant issue is going to be analysed – the connection and the relationship between imaginations in the past and mental simulations in present time. The article will present how to leverage these ideas.

Opis:
Mentalization is a multifaceted cognitive activity that enables individuals to interpret the behaviors of others (and their own) in terms of intentional mental states. A person who engages in mentalization is aware that human behavior stems from one's mental state. The capacity for mentalization begins to develop in childhood, primarily through secure relationships with caregivers, but it can be cultivated throughout life, including through functioning in a mentalizing environment, such as a school. This article aims to address the question of whether developing the ability to mentalize can support the functioning of students, parents, and teachers in the school environment. Findings from previous research and interventions conducted in various parts of the world not only provide an affirmative answer to this question but also identify the characteristics of a mentalizing school that caters to the need for future-oriented education.

Opis:
Emotion Regulation (ER) has been identified as a factor that may be related to psychopathological symptoms. However, evidence about the relationship between ER and psychopathological symptoms is still unspecific. Moreover, although the ability of distress tolerance (DT) has gained increasing attention, it has not yet been sufficiently explored in relation to specific psychopathological symptoms. The aim of the study was to analyze the role of different specific ER mechanisms on various psychopathological symptoms, with particular emphasis on the role of DT. To do so, a correlational study was carried out. A total of 128 university students between 18 and 44 years old (mean age = 26.7, SD = 6.14) answered the Distress Tolerance Scale, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale and the Symptom Check List 90-Revised. For each psychopathological symptom (and for general distress), linear regression were applied. All models were statistically significant with differences in the amount of explained variance and in the predictors. DT predicted symptoms of depression, anxiety, obsessions and compulsions and general distress. The study highlights the importance of the different mechanisms of ER in each specific psychopathological symptom and their implications for mental health.

Opis:
Literature is filled with silence, which, being polysemic, is a medium much harder to decipher than a word, whose semantic bearing capacity is more limited. To explore silence is to try to gain access to something most intimate, something that does not want to – or cannot – appear in verbal form. In Krysinska’s selected texts one observes silence on two levels, the narrative level and the story level. In most cases, we are dealing with a communicative silence. On the story level, characters use silence as an efficient way of achieving their goals or they are forced into silence by external factors. In many cases silence is imposed on the characters, it is not their choice, for in the given situation they could not utter even a single word. On the narrative level it is the narrator who condemns characters to the role of quasi-mutes, for any statements from characters are relatively rare. The narrator does not allow them to speak freely, he uses reported speech. He exercises active control over the reader, skilfully directing their reception and forcing them to accept his point of view.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to verify whether there exists a relationship between the increase of perceived stress in its various aspects and the parental attitudes of parents of adults with intellectual disabilities as well as a comparison if the relationship also exists among parents of intellectually healthy people. The research used the The Perception of Stress Questionaire by Mieczysław Plopa and Ryszard Makarowski and the Parental Attitudes Scale by Mieczysław Plopa. The research embraced 39 parents of intellectually disabled people and 85 parents of healthy people. The analyses have proven that the parents of the disabled people and of the people without intellectual disabilities with regards to the displayed parental attitudes and the level of the perceived stress. The former are characterized by an intensifi cation of a demanding attitude and a higher level of perceiving the intrapsychic stress which was not observable among the latter. Moreover, differences with regards to the perceived stress have been noticed between the mothers and the fathers of healthy people – the mothers reveal a stronger feeling of emotional tension than the fathers. Similar it proved among the mothers and fathers of intellectually disabled people where it is also mothers who experience stronger emotional tension, intrapsychic and external stress. In the light of the conducted studies a general conclusion may be drawn that the level of the stress perceived by the parents of the people with disabilities is signifi cantly connected with their displayed parental attitudes, namely: protectiveness, inconsequence. In case of the parents of the healthy people such a relationship concerned only the protective attitude.

Opis:
The paper presents case studies of geodesign and collaborative planning in the context of important cultural areas in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, “Pampulha” and “Iron Quadrangle”. The first area is at urban scale and has recently received UNESCO recognition due to Oscar Niemeyer’s work, and the second is at regional scale and of qualified landscape, important historical and cultural values, in addition to abundant natural resources (mainly minerals). The results allow a reflection on the role of interoperability and visualization applications to favor mental maps and better conditions in participatory planning, based on the methodology of Geodesign.

Opis:
Attachment styles have been analysed in the context of development and functioning of children for decades. It seems interesting to analyse the attachment styles also in the context of adult life and psychological well-being. The article presents own research concerning the relationship between the attachment styles and mental health among young adults. There were 96 participants, 60 females and 36 males. The Attachment Styles Questionnaire, the General Health Questionnaire (GHO-28), and an authorial survey were used. A statistical analysis showed a positive correlation between anxiousambivalent attachment style and somatic symptoms, unrest, depression symptoms, and avoidant behaviours. A secure attachment style correlated negatively with depression symptoms.
