Opis:
The paper focuses on specification and utilization of manipulation skills to facilitate programming of bimanual manipulation tasks. Manipulation skills are actions to reach predefined goals. They constitute an interface between low-level constraint-based task specification and high level symbolic task planning. The task of the robot can be decomposed into subtasks that can be resolved using manipulation skills. Rubik's cube solving problem is presented as an example of a 3D manipulation task using two-arm robot system with diverse sensors such as vision, force/torque, tactile sensors.

Language is one of the main tools politicians use in their work. An accurate language use and following the principles of rhetoric are crucial in creating a nuanced public image, gaining followers and obtaining power. The aim of this article is to examine the characteristics of the language of politics mainly in relation to linguistic structures used to manipulate and maximize political gain. A starting point for the discussion is formed by parliamentary speeches of a Dutch politician and the leader of populist party PVV, Geert Wilders.

In the twenty-first century issue related to freedom, manipulation and advertising is an integral aspect of everyday life in society. The concept of freedom is very difficult to interpret. The literature is considered an interdisciplinary approach, therefore, is associated with many areas of psychology, philosophy, law or economics. Almost every step we meet with advertising, through which companies and institutions promote their products in a variety of ways. However, if consumers perceive them as objects or subjective? Often society is manipulated, lied to and misled by the use of various techniques of advertising on television, radio or the Internet. In view of the above, if society feel free? Is such behavior on the part of enterprises are ethical and lead to a balanced functioning of the civilization of the twenty-first century?

Opis:
Manipulation is perceived as a strategy to direct human behavior or as a method of influencing people by hiddenly shaping their consciousness without their explicit will or knowledge. This study aims to present subtle differences in meaning between the concepts of manipulation, persuasion and social engineering. The author’s task is to demonstrate that a wide spectrum of influence tools is perceived and defined differently by individual scientific disciplines. They are interpreted differently by linguists, differently by sociologists, and still differently by psychologists. In the article, the author also presents selected techniques and types of manipulation and proves that there are those that harm the recipients, but there are also those in which the manipulator has no bad intentions. The presented analyzes show that influencing others has many forms and differs in terms of techniques, goals, intentions and effects in shaping attitudes and behaviors. As a rule, the manipulator seeks to gain benefits at the expense of the manipulated person. This approach refers to the phenomenon of psychomanipulation, popular in the field of psychology, while omitting its legal aspect. Meanwhile, we should not forget about an equally important issue, i.e. criminal liability for manipulation, understood as an action harmful to the victim and highly unethical. The presentation of legal aspects therefore seems significant for all issues related to the presented phenomena.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Fascia Manipulation® is one of the methods focusing on the deep fascia. The assumption is that fascial manipulation is carried out on precisely determined points – coordination centres (cc), and on a limited area so as the friction occurring during manipulation would cause a local rise in temperature due to the inflammatory reaction. Rise in temperature influences modification in consistency of elementary matter in the manipulated area, and by the same token causing a decrease in the negative effects of fascia densification which stems from accumulation of hyaluronic acid. The purpose of the research is to prove the thesis that fascial manipulation causes local rise in temperature due to inflammatory reaction. Materials and method. For the research, 25 individuals with densification in lower limb area were qualified. They were exposed to a single, 3-minute facial manipulation®. By means of a thermal-imaging camera, changes in the temperature of the body in the examined area were evaluated. The body’s temperature evaluation was carried out 8 times: before the treatment, 5 minutes after the treatment, and, next, 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48 hours after the treatment. Results. The average surface temperature of the treated area before mobilization was 33.4°C. A statistically relevant increase in temperature was already observed 5 minutes after the treatment (increase of 0.5°C; p<0.001). However, the highest temperature was observed 24 hours after mobilization (increase of 2.4 °C). The difference between the first and 7 other measurements was statistically relevant (p<0.001). Conclusion. The statistically relevant increase in temperature under the influence of fascial manipulation® in the treatment area can confirm the occurrence of inflammatory reaction.

The development of the Internet and digital technology by the end of the twentieth century has raised serious disputes about ethics, authenticity and photo manipulation. These concerns are especially relevant in the field of photojournalism in the news media, where credibility matters the most. In this paper we described the current situation in relation to image authenticity and professional ethics in three countries of Central Europe – the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. We asked research questions regarding photo production, circumstances of photographing, image content, technical improvements, manipulation, ethical standards and responsibility. Our findings reveal a complexity of ethical issues related to working with visual news material. During the fieldwork we conducted 65 in-depth interviews and surveys with full-time and freelance photojournalists and photo editors working for printed and online newspapers and opinion magazines in Central Europe.

Opis:
The rapidly changing world does not provide a man with a sense of stability; he intensifies confusion in fundamental matters related to everyday life. Evolving in directions that are difficult to predict, this is not conducive to the process of maturing into a responsible experience of humanity. Various “religious” organizations and societies take advantage of this situation, putting confusion in order (usually in an apparent way), thereby obtaining new adherents for their vision of a better world. Being under the influence of charismatic leaders, the members of new religious movements change their behaviour diametrically, as well as their way of thinking about themselves and the world. Any former model of life is replaced by a new, i.e., collective, model of thinking, estimating and behaving. Important things lose their value. The hitherto prevailing existence, perceived as “bad”, “unenlightened”, “materialistic” or “not soulful”, is left for a new and “better” life, for purposes that are attainable only thanks to contact with the new group. The acquisition of self-identity and identification with the group requires considerable effort. Going over from one world to another brings with it numerous consequences of a psychological and social nature. Hence an immense complexity of factors forming the identity of a religious man appear. On the one hand, this is influenced by personality factors, the level of inner integration, psychical and emotional maturity, and on the other hand – a number of social conditions, i.e., the specificity of the cult group, its structure, doctrine, history and social relations. All the above makes it impossible to create a universal model of the follower’s identity within cult groups. It is only possible to indicate the conditions for the creation of the new individual, self leading to a manifestation of their participation within a definite cultic group.

Our study is qualitative research. It is a content analysis of more than 2,500 European and American posters of war propaganda identifying modern principles of persuasion and forms of discourse. The analysis of the themes demonstrates that the techniques used one hundred years ago to convince civilians to enlist had enormous potential for development to such a degree that they were adopted by modern political and commercial persuasion. Therefore, we can consider the propagandists of the Great War as modern spin doctors. The idea evolved after reading Propaganda (1928) by Edward Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud. This is an astonishing book; it provides illuminating interpretations both for understanding of war propaganda – not just for the Great War – and for the commercial discourse of which Bernays became a promoting agent. During the Great War the propagandists used emotional and rational stratagems to convince volunteers to leave to the front. Among these, the fake news played an important role in the production of the posters that served to motivate and galvanize people to defend the ideals of the war. It was an organized disinformation action because, especially for American people, the war was very far in kilometres and in interest. Fake news has two different factors: wrong or unreasonable argumentations and false information used as premises. The success of the posters was that of moulding the agenda-setting and the opinion of citizens in order to increase the enlistment to defend the identity of the nation.

Opis:
The Internet is the first medium in which controlling the content has become difficult or even impossible. One of its reasons is the fact that the Internet users – who so far were only passive recipients of media messages – have gained the possibility to create and distribute their own messages. Thus, they have become active participants of the participatory culture, in which it is difficult to distinguish between professional and amateur content. The boundaries between private and public domains have become blurred. The distribution of forces shaping public opinion has changed, because the content comes from large media corporations and nonprofessional creators alike. The Internet message is characterized by instantaneous distribution, the ease of editing and modifying its content, and vagueness of authorship. These features make the Internet particularly susceptible to disinformation purposefully aimed at manipulating its users. The fact that every activity undertaken by the Internet users is recorded and analysed is also conducive to manipulation attempts, as the data obtained this way are used to shape their opinions and influence their decisions. The aim of the article is to undertake a discourse on information and disinformation on the Internet in the context of the development of new digital communication tools. The article provides the examples of information manipulation, which could happen only in such an interactive and multimedia medium as the Internet.

Information in the aspect of security plays a significant role in influencing the spectrum of the functioning of the state. In today’s information chaos, information has become a tool of manipulation and disinformation, also used in the implementation of strategic goals of a given country. States can thus achieve their strategic goals because it is less costly, more difficult to detect, and allows some sort of manipulation of the rationale behind such actions. Such countries include countries for which democracy is only a concept. It can be indicated that information is a raw material that, in the process of manipulation and disinformation, becomes a kind of a tool that can be used in a targeted way. The issue of fighting disinformation is of key importance today.

The animated debate surrounding an apparent migrant problem of the Western world, manifesting itself in either the immigration crisis in Europe or the progressing tendencies to isolationism both in Europe and in the United States of America, provides a good case to investigate the media representation of immigrants in the American context. The sometimes biased portrayal of immigrant communities in the contemporary American media, especially those with right-wing inclination, has been given a higher profile in the U.S. public discourse and bears a striking resemblance to the anti-Irish sentiment and press coverage that dominated in the U.S. in the 19th century. It is in the purview of the following paper to examine the media rhetoric and representation strategies that were used at that time and that are harnessed currently. The idea warrants discussion since the United States also prides itself for its multicultural and multiethnic heritage, which proves to highlight the polarized public opinion. In the author’s estimation, the anti-immigrant attitudes are a recurring theme in the American culture and have always divided the public.

The article presents the results of analysis exploring politicians’ and political par-ties’ reputation building processes. Due to this it contains examples of definitions which can be wrongly linked with interpretation of the term public relations – which mainly happens among politicians and some journalists. It also expands upon elements which can have positive and negative impact on reputation building processes. As an example the term manipulation is illustrated, which is very often wrongly understood and linked with professional communication. The article shows what benefits can be gained thanks to well planned and long-term public relations activities as well. One added value of this publication is communication model whose implementation during political cam-paigns can strengthen effects of tools discussed in the article

Besides unquestionable benefits which we can gain from using media, the relevant threats cannot be ignored. So far, the researchers’ attention mostly focused on cyberbullying and addiction. These days, more and more people recognise the danger, which is an ease with which fake news can by multiplied on the Internet. Younger generations, for whom Internet is a natural source of knowledge about the world, can have some troubles with critical rating of information. Furthermore, he assessment of reliability requires knowledge, commitment, time, and most importantly – a desire to verify of the viewer. The problem seems wider, and it doesn’t concern only young people. More and more often people who are characterized by knowledge and life experience can be fooled by fake news, especially when they are not experts in some fields. The main aim of the article is to characterize the phenomenon of fake news, and also psychological reasons shared by the users of digital world, referred to as ‘trolls’. Also, the methods used to identify fake news on the Internet are described.

This article discusses how the use of manipulation in education can be ethically justified under certain conditions. An argument is made that the ethical evaluation of manipulation depends firstly on the definition of the concepts of education and manipulation, and secondly, on the level on which the manipulation takes place, that is, on the aims and reasons for why it is used. It is also suggested that the ethical evaluation should refer to education as a global process, which starts in early childhood and ends in early adulthood, rather than to particular stages of education. The observations made in this article allow, to a certain extent, to answer to the accusation that manipulating the children in their own interest is ethically suspicious.

It is now being realized that people are driven by their emotions too much greater extent than by their intellect. Therefore, most influential are those leaders who knew how to evoke appropriate emotional states in their listeners. Examples of successful propaganda provide Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and recently Rwanda. In fact, both Nazi and Soviet propaganda made it possible to exterminate thousands of people with a silent consent of common citizens. Most people are easy to manipulate because they do not realize that words are symbols that bear strong emotional load. Moreover, party and religious leaders are often not aware of the consequences of the words they use. Whether they speak of an “enemy” of the nation, religion or society their eager followers will sooner or later come to the conclusion that the enemy is a serious obstacle in the welfare of the state. It made the revolutionary to slaughter all those who dared to think and act in a different way. On the other hand, words can also create positive attitudes persuading people to offer help to those in need. It is closely connected with the way the brain works. The studies found that common are not only sensual illusions but cognitive illusions as well. They make people to act in accordance with schemas they have internalized, and to react with negative emotions to those who try to change their word outlook, and the manner of thinking since they in terpret it as an attack on their basic values.

As the title and introduction explain, Sophie Quirk’s monograph sets out to investigate the reasons and ways comedians manipulate and influence their audience. The term manipulation, however, should be considered apart from its often negative connotations and should be interpreted as the comedian’s attempt to skilfully communicate with their audience, elicit laughter and, most importantly in this case, influence their beliefs, attitude and behaviour (see p. 2). With these premises, Quirk explores instances of stand-up comedy including some interaction between mainly well-known British comedians (e.g. Eddy Izzard, Stewart Lee, Josie Long, etc.) and their audience. She also interviews some of these performers so as to gain a first-hand understanding of the comedians’ performing experience.

Victor Pelevin is one of the most prominent exponents of Russian literary postmodernism. His novel S.N.U.F.F. (2011) is analyzed in this paper. Pelevin’s novel is set in the future (but the book contains many allusions and references to contempo-rary reality). As the aftermath of the collapse of the old world (after apocalyptic events) the earth has been divided into two countries (two nations): Byzantion (Big Byz) with advanced technology (where 3D simulations have almost completely replaced real life) and Urkaine whose inhabitants are called Orks and who are technologically backward. To keep the people of Byzantion entertained, the news companies periodically start wars which are filmed by CINEWS INC. Pelevin focuses our attention on mass media manip-ulation methods and techniques. The writer demonstrates that television manipulates information and produces its “own” versions of events – its “own” version of the war. This self-creation of television (“hyperreality”) has no reference to what is authentic. The aim of this article is to present and discuss relations and connections between “real reality” and “hyperreality” (virtual reality), between real emotions and their simulacra, between a “real” man and a “sura” (a surrogate woman, a human-like doll).

This paper discusses the stages of the translation process and their ideological features. Teaching translation, which includes an explanation and a simulation of the whole process, is supposed to acquire a new ideological dimension since it takes place in the classroom. The translation process is defined as a series of negotiations and decisions made by several “ideological subjects” involved in carrying out a particular translation service. The simulation of this process is suggested as a didactic method of teaching translation and indicated as a useful introduction into the market of professional translation. The study emphasizes a more active performance of students in learning translation. It also includes some didactic recommendations and explanations of the ideological burden always present in the practice of translation. The paper is mainly based on the Manipulation School approach in Translation Studies.

In this essay, we shall attempt to highlight W. S. Burroughs’s concept of language being a virus from outer space as remarkably different from the pertinent views of any other Beat writer. If Kerouac saw language as an efficient medium of expressing the immediacy and unpredictability of experience, while Ginsberg used it as just as efficient instrument of voicing sociopolitical protest or Buddhist truths (following in the footsteps of Romantic transcendentalists or Whitman), Burroughs saw it rather as an enigmatic, alien force. The latter could effectively disturb human understanding and communication, or even be used as a means of mental/social political oppression and manipulation on the global scale. Consequently, this, arguably, most atypical Beat writer appears to be a forerunner of a relevant trend in American postmodern fiction, represented e. g. by Ronald Sukenick or Raymond Federman, with their implied disbelief in language as a cognitively reliable means of handling human experience or reality as such: for example, by the lavishly applied typographical experimentation.

A number of modern Russian political discourse provisions which consist of tendentious interpretations of Russian and Ukrainian history and which result in frank and systematic manipulation of historical memory have been analyzed. Their goals are to justify Russia’s aggressive policy towards Ukraine to prove and legalize the right to decide the fate of the Ukrainian people and to determine the vectors of the Ukrainian foreign policy. At the same time, they are aimed at discrediting the Ukrainian government and delegitimizing Ukrainian statehood as well as ultimately distorting and leveling Ukrainian national identity. The outdated concept of Ancient Rus as the cradle of “three brotherly peoples”, i.e. Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians, or its more archaic version about the existence of a single Russian nation, whose branches are actually Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians, is used. A component of this concept is the idea of Russia being the direct and sole legal heir of Ancient Rus, whose historical mission was and remains the gathering of ancient Russian lands, which include the lands of Ukraine and Belarus. Accordingly, the separate existence of the Ukrainian people, and hence their right to state independence, is either denied altogether or conditionally recognized, if they maintain inseparable ties with Russia and renounce the Western vector of foreign policy. Modern Ukraine is considered by the Russian authorities and the political establishment as “anti-Russia”, which has no right to exist. Attempts to apply the tools of the historical politics of the Russian Federation. In particular, it concerns historical education and memorial practices in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of the Donbas, where the territory temporarily is not controlled by Ukraine. These territories are also considered a model for similar measures used on temporarily occupied territories during the 2022 war.

In the political authoritarian reality, the use of the term “truth” seeks only verifiability for its justification. It will also make it possible to distort human cognitive processes and their political consequences, resulting from its translation into freedom of choice. Therefore, the issue of understanding as the foundation of the social world, which is a derivative of the universal species consciousness and the phenomena conditioned by this consciousness, becomes of fundamental importance. The experience of science shows that in deliberations on awareness of pregnancy, a popular view is often confused with identity and causality. In the conditions of political violence, it consists in “mixing” consciousness with what is not consciousness, but conditions it, the best example of which is the strength of personality. The main goal of the study is an attempt to answer and at the same time present an analytical view of the problem of political violence and the political nature of crime. It was assumed that the dominant role in authoritarianism is played by lies and their use is reduced to employing them in the process of manipulation, where consciously selected universals derived from the ontological understanding of truth are used to shape the desired social consciousness. In this way, the scientific nature of the study is also an element of social education with the use of the popular way of fighting “evil”, enabling its understanding on the basis of the principles of not only criminal and material cognition.

Problem: The issue concerns summer camps that have been organized by one association for many years. Research questions are: 1) What is this type of tourism? 2) What is the main attraction that attracts participants? 3) How has the participation in these summer training camps changed over the years? Method: The participant observation is the basic qualitative method used here.. The issue also concerns participation in the international martial arts environment and tourism implemented in this environment, whether they are visitors or organisers. To conduct this study, we analysed Waga i Miecz, a local monthly magazine published between 1993 and 2022, and the author's own trips related to martial arts tourism from 1989 to 2020. Results: There was a stabilization when it comes to walking and the choosing the place of the camp. Training intensity reduced and competitive workouts transitioned to recreational activities.. Resignation from sports competition decreased the number of participants (by about 50-60%). The training is conducted by the same, increasingly older master-teachers. Conclusions: Changing the nature of the camp to a recreational one resulted in the participation of whole families. Nevertheless, the champions are still the main attraction. What also counts is the tourist attractiveness of the destination and social considerations – interpersonal relations in the group of participants.

It allows for the identification of specific tools of manipulation used by the broadcaster to shape the public opinion (i.a. gatekeeping, framing, emotionalization of the message), as well as the factors that determine the usefulness of television in political propaganda activities, namely: coverage, accessibility, audio-visual nature and the possibility of controlling the message. The audio-visual nature is especially important in this regard. Because of it, persuasion in television is not based on the exchange of arguments and thoughts and therefore not on the logos, but to a large extent on manipulation through images and symbols, and therefore on the rhetorical pathos. The image simplifies reality, it is suggestive (it transmits information in a direct way, does not leave much room for nuance), it gives the illusion of realism (it creates a belief about the authenticity of the presented event), and removes the variety of cognitive authorities (on the television the image itself is the authority).

The purpose of this article is to analyse the phenomenon of linguistic manipulation in the advertising of nutriments and dietary supplements published in Russian bodybuilding magazines. Advertisers use the persuasive capabilities of the language on its various levels in order to create an effective message. Common manipulative methods in slogans include the use of references to the world of sporting values, the recommendation of the product by sports authorities, and the use of evaluative lexis. Also, short expressive syntactic structures loaded with forms of imperatives have the potential for manipulation.Słowa kluczowe: advertising, manipulat

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the paper is to examine the efficiency of complaining as a method of social influence (Doliński, 2005). In Polish culture, complaining seems to be an efficient technique for initiating a dialogue, potentially increasing the effectiveness of persuasive messages expressed in a conversation. Methodology: The hypothesis was tested in two natural experiments. In the first one, a random sample of persons (n=246) were asked to let the experimenter through to the checkout counter at a supermarket. The request was preceded either by (1) a dialogue, (2) a complaint, or (3) no prior contact. It was either substantially or seemingly justified. In the second study, customers in a shop (n=46) were invited to pursue conversation initiated with (1) a positive statement or (2) a complaint regarding an extensive range of products. Findings: Study 1 proved that a seemingly justified request preceded by complaining is less effective (65.6 per cent) than a request preceded by a dialogue (93.8 per cent); this result is similar to the result of the control group (53.1 per cent). When the request was substantially justified, both dialogue and complaining seemed equally effective (86 per cent and 90 per cent respectively) – more effective than the results of the control group (46 per cent). In Study 2, positive and negative remarks initiating a conversation triggered similar responses in terms of willingness to pursue the dialogue (73.1 per cent and 78.3 per cent respectively). Constraints to research: Natural experiments presented in the paper were not controlled for such variables as environmental factors or individual differences. Originality: Complaining has never been subject to systematized examination as a method of social influence.

While misinformation and propaganda have existed since ancient times, their importance and influence nowadays – in the age of social media – is still not clear. Recent social and political events, such as the controversial Brexit referendum in the United Kingdom and the narrow win of Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election of 2016, have led to a wave of interest in the phenomenon of “fake news” – described usually as a piece of fabricated information that disseminates deceptive content or distorts actual news reports, shared on social media. Despite being a new term, “fake news” has also evolved very quickly and rapidly. The present article attempts to analyze how the term “fake news” is being developed in recent years. The article characterizes this relevant social phenomenon linked to cheating, misinformation and manipulation and also proposes its classification and definition.

Fake news is false, manipulative information that spreads rapidly on the Internet, especially on social networking sites. It mainly deals with controversial topics, such as escape or migration. It is because of such false information treated by its recipients as true that refugees are suspected of, among other things, violence, thefts or obtaining additional benefits from the receiving community. The article discusses selected fake news about refugees in order to show how easy it is to be manipulated on the Internet. The main aim of fake news is to arouse negative emotions in recipients and to incite them to feel hatred and to be violent towards refugees.

This study showed that more hand errors occurred in the nondominant hand, extended arm, normal breathing and standing compared with errors in the dominant hand, flexed arm, inspire–hold and sitting, respectively. This study advised people to use their dominant hand, flex their arm, inspire and hold the breath and support their body while performing fine manipulation tasks. Finally, hand error varied dramatically across the participants, indicating the need to screen individuals for fine manual manipulation tasks.

Opis:
Translation involves the carrying-over of texts to target audiences that have at their disposal an established system of representation with its own norms for the production and consumption of knowledge vis-à-vis self, others, objects, and events. Based on its own culture, this system animates and regulates issues of identity, similarity, and difference between sources and targets. Notwithstanding its generally noble mission, translation is not innocent. Translators manipulate information to achieve representations of sources acceptable to target audiences. Given this premise, the aim here is to examine instances from the self-translation by Heikal of Autumn of Fury from English (1983) into Arabic (1988). The discussion shows how through self-translation, the author-cum-translator manipulates the reading position of the target audience, shaping thus translation as process, product, and reception.

Manipulation affects us anytime and anywhere. Day in, day out we are exposed to its impact, being subjected to it or becoming manipulators ourselves. There exist a multitude of manipulation techniques, but fortunately a fair number of ways to defend ourselves against manipulation as well. It pays to slow down the fast-paced lifestyle, take a closer look at the world we live in and consider what the point of all this is. Are, what we consider our free decisions, free indeed?

Opis:
Wladimir Putin is one of the most well-known politicians in the present international arena. Many prominent writers devoted books to him, in which he is either the positive “spirit of Russia” or the complete opposite of “the father of nation”. Almost each of them sought an answer to the question about who Putin is. Constantly high popularity of Russian prime minister still remains a political puzzle for many analysts. Some even described this tendency as “the Putin's phenomenon”. However, it should be stressed that the analysis of Putin by those scholars concerned only his behaviour. His gestures, his clothing style and also his conduct during negotiations with foreign partners were interpreted. So his facial expression and gestures came first with them. The author tried to present a pragmatic interpretation of linguistic predispositions of this politician. The aim of this work is to answer the question: how Putin, using the meticulous selection of words influences his electorate and manipulates their consciousness. Therefore, the main task of this work is to explain the linguistic phenomenon of Putin, as well as to prove the proposed thesis that the ex-president of the Russian Federation personifies the phenomenon of the political activist not present on the Russian political scene until now.
