Social sciences, understood as critical and not neutral by nature, they should be equipped with specific competencies and sensivity. C.  W. Mills these comptence define as sociological imagination – which is study of the relationship of history and biography, Giddens interpreted it as three basic senses: historical, anthropological, critical. The translation into political science would be a political theories imagination, it consist,, among over things like a: historicity of political phenomena, antisubstansialism, research self-awareness. Definition of political theories imagination I propose in the context of Wiktor Marzec’s paper Rebelion and Reaction, which is a study from field of historical sociology, it’s in itself a lot of inspiration for theorists of politics: research, theoretical and methodological. It is worth considering – in this context – fundamental categories of political science, like political subjectivity and the political, also revalidate in their range.

W artykule przedstawiony został przegląd badań diagnostycznych mierzących wyobraźnię wizualną i twórczą, wykorzystywanych przez psychologów. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono technikompomiaru opracowanym w ramach współczesnych teorii procesu twórczego. Przeanalizowano teoretyczne założenia tych technik, procedury badania oraz czynniki wpływające na trafność i rzetelnośćpomiaru zdolności wyobrażeniowych. Wnioski płynące z tej analizy były podstawą określenia możliwości zastosowania eksperymentalnych technik pomiaru wyobraźni twórczej w badaniach pedagogicznych, zwłaszcza w diagnostyce potencjału twórczego dzieci.
This paper aims to present an overview of diagnostic tasks measuring creative imagination, appliedby psychologists in experimental studies. A special attention is given to experimental techniques formulated within the framework of major theories of creative process. The article examines theoretical assumptions of these techniques, procedures of the study and factors which influence the validity and reliability of measuring imagery abilities. The conclusions drawn from this examination provide a basis fordefining a possibility of applying experimental techniques of creative imagination measurement in educational studies, especially in the diagnostics of children’s creative potential.

This chapter consists of two parts: theoretical background and case studies. It aims at presenting children’s fantasies or mental images (be it verbal or iconic) of paidia as a word. The article proposes a short review of studies presenting the development and intellectual background of the notion of national community from the perspective of major civilizational transformations of the last fifty years (including books by Ulf Hannerz, Robert Reich, and Kenichi Ohmae). In this perspective, the discussion focuses on historical and theoretical aspects of functioning of translation in community making process. The discussion also explores relations between translation and imagination, especially in the context of the notions of imagined communities by Benedict Anderson, and cultural translation by Homi Bhabha. Both notions stress the dimensions of translational and translatological activity, which can be discussed in the categories of critical activity and a sort of political activity.

He appreciates the role played by the screenwriter and establishes the principles for cooperation between actors and the director.This article is devoted to the director Antoni Bohdziewiczs creative output and teaching work at the Łódź Film School, to commemorate the 110th anniversary of his birth. The author presents Bohdziewiczs early days as a director at Polish Radio in Vilnius, and also his work as a film critic. A significant moment in Bohdziewiczs life was his leaving for Paris on a scholarship on Prof. Władysław Tatarkiewicz’ recommendation, where he produced several short films. On returning to Poland, Bohdziewicz enjoyed success mainly as a reporter for Polish Radio and also as the co-founder of the Imagination Theatre (Teatr Wyobraźni). When war broke out he got involved in underground activities, becoming one of the organisers recording the events of the Warsaw Uprising on film. Bohdziewiczs post-war activities were significantly affected by his appearance at the Filmmakers’ Congress in Wisła (1949), at which he spoke out against introducing the ideas of socialist realism. Bohdziewicz never felt fulfilled as a director, despite producing several films, including documentaries, feature films based on contemporary themes and literary adaptations. His true passion remained his lecturing work at the Łódź Film School. The article quotes many of his pupils and protegees, including Andrzej Wajda, Janusz Majewski, Kazimierz Kutz, who saw him as their master, and their artistic and spiritual guide through those times. Without exception they emphasise how Bohdziewicz lived solely for the School. In his later years he was strongly associated with the Film Discussion Club movement; he occasionally worked in theatre, wrote, and taught at the INSAS Film School in Brussels. With hindsight and from his pupils’ remembrances, it becomes clear just how invaluable his teaching work at the Łódź Film School was

Wiele współczesnych badań koncentruje się wokół problematyki fałszywej pamięci. Badania dotyczące pamięci epizodycznej pokazują wyraźny wpływ wyobraźni na implementacje niezaistniałych nigdy zdarzeń w ludzką pamięć (Pezdek, Hodge, 1999; Pentland, Hyman, 1996). W badaniu przeprowadzono dwa eksperymenty, których celem było ukazanie wpływu wcześniejszej wiedzy na pamięć bieżących informacji. Eksperyment 1 dotyczył przypominania informacji, natomiast eksperyment 2 – rozpoznawania. Zastosowano również dwa rodzaje instrukcji: wyobrażeniową oraz pojęciową na etapie przyswajania i odtwarzania informacji bieżących. W badaniu wcześniejsza wiedza została nabyta poprzez Tekst 1, którego badani uczyli się przez 1 tydzień. Wiedza bieżąca dostarczona była w postaci tekstu 2, który był uszczegółowioną wersją tekstu 1, ale nie zawierał wszystkich informacji wprost i został podany osobom badanym do przeczytania jeden raz. Wyniki potwierdziły wpływ wcześniejszej wiedzy oraz wpływ rodzaju instrukcji na pamięć bieżących informacji. Ponadto wykazano różnice w sposobie odzyskiwania informacji, jakim było przypominanie i rozpoznawanie. Przeprowadzone badania są próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy wyobrażeniowe i pojęciowe warunki mają znaczenie dla powstawania fałszywych wspomnień w sytuacji, w której próbujemy oddzielić wiedzę bieżącą od wiedzy utrwalonej w schematach.
The purpose of this study was to verify whether imaginative vs. non-imaginative conditions are crucial for creating false memories, particularly in a situation in which people try to separate current information from their general knowledge. At present, many researches studying memory, focus on the false memories phenomenon. The studies concerning episodic memory suggest the influence of imagination when one tries to implement never-happened events into memory (Pezdek, Hodge, 1999; Hyman, Pentland, 1996). The article reports results of 2 experiments. Experiment 1 concerned the process of information recall whereas experiment 2 – recognition. In each experiment two instructions – imaginative and non-imaginative were used both on the level of reading and answering questions concerning current information. The context of general knowledge was created by text 1 and the current information was delivered by a contents-related text 2. However, text 2 did not contain explicit information and participants were asked to read it only once. The results have shown the influence of the imaginative vs. non-imaginative instruction on memorizing current information. Moreover, the differences between the recall and the recognition groups were demonstrated. This study showed that imaginative vs. non-imaginative instruction affects false memories creation, especially when we try to separate the general knowledge from current information.

Poszukiwanie odpowiedniej metody wychowania wymaga wiele wysiłku z ich strony, szczególnie gdy w grę wchodzi resocjalizacja młodego człowieka. Każdy wychowawca stara się odnaleźć najwłaściwszą metodę swej pracy, co nie jest łatwym zadaniem w czasach dokonywania się wielkiego postępu nauki i techniki. Szybkość rozwoju nauk ścisłych powoduje, że konieczne wydaje się przybliżenie tych nauk pedagogom, a celem takich działań jest udoskonalenie warsztatu pracy z młodymi ludźmi. Współczesny pedagog, opierający swą pracę na tradycyjnym modelu przekazywania wiedzy, rzadko znajduje aprobatę młodzieży, należy więc sięgać coraz częściej po nowe metody odnajdowania się człowieka we Wszechświecie. Nauki fizyczne stają się coraz dostępniejsze dla ogółu społeczeństwa i mogą być doskonałą podstawą do zainteresowania nimi wychowanków. Stąd wynika potrzeba zmian w przygotowaniu do zawodu przyszłych pedagogów, których rolą jest rozbudzenie ciekawości i wyobraźni młodego pokolenia – to zawsze stanowi o początku sukcesów pedagogicznych.
Education and upbringing is undoubtedly a challenge for parents, teachers and pedagogues. Searching for an appropriate method of education requires a lot of effort, especially when teenagers are resocializated. Every teacher tries to find the most appropriate method of their work, which is not an easy task in times of great progress in science and technology. The development of science makes it necessary to bring it closer to pedagogues and the aim of such actions is to improve working with teenagers. Modern pedagogue, basing his work on the traditional model of knowledge transfer, rarely finds approval of the teenagers, so it is necessary to reach for new methods of settle in the human beings at the Universe. Physical science becomes more and more accessible to the general public and can be an excellent basis for pupils’ interest in them. Hence the need for changes in the preparation for the future pedagogues, whose role is to stimulate the curiosity and imagination of the young generation - it is always the beginning of pedagogical successes

The article deals with Thomas Hobbes’ conception of imagination. Hob-bes was aware of Greek and Latin origins of the term. According to him, imagination is nothing but a decaying sense. While reconstructing the draft of Hobbes’ theory of imagination, the author of the article describes the activity of mind as motion caused by bodies, and states that imagination can overcome the bounds of senses and memory. On the one hand, imagination is limited toexperience (in its reproductive function), but on the other, it can create newideas, conceptions or trains of thoughts (in its productive function).

Opis:

Describing the poetry of Venclova, Brodsky states that „every major poet has an idiosyncratic inner landscape against which his voice sounds in his mind or, if you prefer, subconsciously”[1]. We cannot but look at it as a potentially auto-referential remark. For Brodsky, definitely a major poet, such a place is Venice, yet it is surprising that his chief essay on that place does not capture many scholars’ attention. At the same time, there are relatively few studies that focus exclusively on the poetic images in Brodsky’s works as the material realization the poet’s reverie. That seems to be a huge negligence given that the metaphysical concern so characteristic of the poet is at its peak in this literary piece. The present study focuses on the images of water in Brodsky’s essay as being the chief substance of his cosmic reverie. The methodology derives from Bachelard’s phenomenological method, the aim of which is to communicate with the imagining consciousness of the poet who creates original images specific to him- or herself. While the poet’s experiences are not taken into account in uch an approach, the cosmology they recreate in poetry is and should be. The main aspects of Brodsky’s cosmic reverie communicated through water are that of the inherent connection between the poet and the universe he creates (а „diffuse ontology”), the existential conflict between human life and absolute Time that is a typical motif in Brodsky’s literary work, as well as the transcendental quality of poetry. All the abovementioned supports Bachelard’s intuition and encourages further study of the poet’s work in this context.

Opis:

Józefowski considers interdisciplinary studies of creative workshop as art form. He describes the structure of his original workshop and discusses the role of imagination and image. Józefowski considers workshop as an art form dating back to the premises of the avant-garde (Here the term ‘avant-garde’ is broadly used to denote innovative artistic activity) and contained in the current of its post-avant-garde manifestations. He analyses the demand for personalization of art, which causes the rejection of the rigor of work imposed by the artistic structure that is defined by technique. The essence of art becomes a functional relation between the main participants of aesthetic events—a creative artist, an on-looker, a subject matter, a relation consisting in art-experiencing. Their functions intertwine, creating an aesthetical field (cf. A. Berleant, Prze-myśleć estetykę, Kraków 2007). The concept of workshop refers to the idea of shaping reality through art, espoused in all currents and formations of the avant-garde. The postulate refers to two dimensions of experiencing the reality— external and internal. The shaping of external reality is achieved through the arrangement of the public space, introduction of new order of social space, defined by work/artistic process. The shaping of the inner reality encompasses the influence of the creative situation experienced by an individual on his/her mental makeup: views, emotions, values.

In the present article I discuss the remarkable fact that many of the motifs to be found in Seneca’s tragedies – such as a horrible death, a madman, an obsession or some supernatural agent – are also to be found in abundance in the work of “Gothic” authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Edgar Allan Poe. Indeed, these motifs are now commonly considered to be the hallmark of the Gothic genre. I also analyse some of the techniques which Seneca uses in order to arouse fear and stimulate the reader’s imagination, comparing them with those used by Poe and other Gothic writers.

Opis:

Paul Ricoeur uncovered the creative aspect of language in his theory of metaphor. The metaphor is a special combination of words that as a clash of distant semantic fields forces the reader to interpret the sentence in a new way and see things in a new light. It is a process in which the imagination plays an important role. Ricoeur compares the metaphor to the Kantian schema which is a procedure to provide an image to a concept. The image helps in the process of assimilating distant elements and thus to achieve a new interpretation. To change perspective the suspension of reference (imaginary neutralization) is also needed. The aim of this essay is to analyze the imaginative functions which are operative in the metaphor and look for an answer to the question about the role of the imagination as a productive power as well as a power of internal intuitions.

Baudelaire blamed the bourgeois society and its photographic narcissism which leads to a perversion of the mythical posture and to a loss of consciousness of the ontological dissimilarity between reality and its image. That is why literature has to develop the imagination of the photographic image, which is both useful and magical, both referential and wondrous. Writers of the romantic era may disdain or admire photography, but they all experience the photographic objectivity and thus develop an antidote to the vain objectification of the collective Narcissus.

Being subject to interdisciplinary questioning in the nineteenth century, the human race appears in the text of the young scientist Georges Pouchet as an issue of the construction of a scientific method based on objectivity. Confronted with the limits of nineteenth-century geographical and ethnographic knowledge, this object of study proves that the plurality of human races is difficult to apprehend using objective scientific methods and experimentation, and reflects the imaginary present in the construction of scientific discourse.

A pilot study concerning rudimentary knowledge of triangles and spatial imagination is submitted to 7th-grade pupils of an elementary school and students of the same age at a grammar school. The theory is important but practical problems are more interesting for students. Problems in spatial imagination allow a teacher to specify the level of students' mathematical abilities. The aim of this pre-research is to compare knowledge of pupils of an elementary school and a grammar school.

Through a comparative study, the author tries to outline the differences and similarities between Madame Bovary and three 19th century Italian novels by De Roberto, Verga and Capuana along with an intertextual game the writers engage in with the French original. By a close analysis of the protagonists’ childhood, marriage/adultery, literary education and psychological disorders, the author argues that whilst Emma Bovary falls victim of her illusions, and Elena with Giacinta are only partially Mesdames Bovary, Teresa comes to realise the male power of novels.

As the Church follows the call of John Paul II for a New Evangelization, she must consider how the individual person actually comes to belief. Bl. John Henry Newman, soon to be canonized, addressed this question in An Essay in Aid of A Grammar of Assent. According to Newman, religious belief is not just a logical acceptance of intellectual propositions. It is a commitment of the whole person to God, according to the image of God formed in the person’s imagination. (The imagination is that faculty possessed by every human person, which coordinates real life experiences and allows the person to comprehend the real world around him).It is by intentionally employing the imagination, rather than demonstrative logic, that the human person arrives at a belief that is well-grounded, neither cold nor fanatical. Accordingly, our evangelical activity, while never neglecting the truth of the Gospel, should seek to engage the senses and feelings of the human person and not merely the intellect.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: On the one hand, contemporary politics is so overwhelmed by imagination that there is a risk for politics to be dissolved into mere creative communication. On the other hand, in an age when politics is reduced to simple administration, there is little room for imagination and the new possibilities it brings. By illuminating the ambiguous nature of the imaginative act I would like to show how a Christian vision of politics may help to understand both sides of this paradox. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: There are two radically distinct ways to carry out imagination depending on the subject’s fundamental attitude. Thus I will elaborate through a phenomenological analysis how this difference is present in all dimension of political imagination concerning the following essential criteria: a) the focus on the intentional object, b) methodology, c) temporal structure. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: If the act of fantasy is really that negative in all these aspects why do philosophers prefer it to the act of imagination? I argue that historically speaking the pivotal point is the Kantian philosophy and it is the Kantian heritage that influenced Feuerbach to lay the new fundaments of political fantasy. RESEARCH RESULTS: Through interpreting a crucial passage of Feuerbach’s The Essence of Christianity I show that the way Kant and Feuerbach transformed the concept of a receptive and obedient imagination focused on the Christian mystery are fatal for political philosophy. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: I insist that contemporary Christian politics is once again on a cross‑road, either it remains captivated by fantasy or it gets liberated by becoming true imagination. Imagination is centered on the mystery that illuminates the whole sphere of politics in all of its horizontal and vertical dimensions and thus allows for a radically new beginning of political reflection.

In a literary work, signals that trigger reader’s inferential excursions allow the reader’s imagination to identify with and control the represented world. They constitute an important element of sense-generating mechanism. Thanks to imagination, the translator imitates the inferential mechanism of the original on various level’s of the text’s structure, activating the imagination of the reader. The translator’s imagination is bi- or multivalent in having the linguistic-semiotic, literary, and cultural quality. Although it manifests itself in language, it goes beyond the boundaries of language. Imagination is a form of consciousness which has no object of its own, and a medium connecting a specific non-imaginary knowledge with representations. It constitutes a mind faculty shaped on the basis of sensory and mental perception. It is derived from individual principles of perception and cognition data processing. It usually requires a stymulus to activate the capabilities of the imagining subject. As a mind faculty, imagination is based on the mental capability common to all people, which is the ability to create chains of associations.Translator’s respect for inferential excursions in the original text is necessary for retaining the original meaning, regardless of whether they occur on the phonetic-phonological level (as in Ionesco’s The Chairs), or on the level of image-semantic and syntactic relations (as in translation of Apollinaire’s Zone), or on the level of syntax (as in translation of Mrożek’s short stories into Slovenian), or on the level of cultural communication (as in Slovenian translation of Gombrowicz’s Trans-Atlantic).

The term “imagination” has numerous meaning: colloquial, paraliterary, scientific. They all refer to auto-communication, which is a conversation of an individual with him or herself, when our mind faculties: memory, intuition, observation, intelligence, knowledge – and imagination, too – compete for dominance or strive for harmonious cooperation. Similarly to the generally understood imagination, its particular, important species (literary imagination) requires internal classification, because it is always an imagination of role: of the author, the reader, the expert, the performer, the censor, the distributor, or sometimes of the translator. The question of translator’s and author’s status provokes a comparison between author’s and translator’s imagination: they share some qualities, but also have decidedly different ones. The opposition between created nature and creating nature, which is a notion used by Józef Czechowicz, might be helpful in capturing the similarities and differences. But this opposition, too, demands a literary and historical context. The author created by the romantic myth seems someone gifted with imagination creating literary worlds, which are limitless, whereas the author of realist works, especially diaries, must give priority to observation, when a piece of external, empirical reality is described and recorded. Baroque, romanticism, realism, expressionism, avant-garde, postmodernism differ in their canons of imagination. The creative process by the author of an original work becomes a negotiation between innovations of authorial fantasy and recreation of the canon. The translator is under much stronger pressure from his or her times, because his or her objectives and tasks are different. Usually, knowledge is enough for a translator: linguistic, historical, literary, common, encyclopaedic, specialised. If knowledge fails, the translator reaches out to imagination as an instrument for interpretation of source text, but this happens only when the text is ambiguous and rich in images. Be it as it may, the quality and range of translator’s activity are determined by someone else’s imagination, accumulated in the translated work, and present in its rhetorics.

In this article, I describe the way in which images come into being in the mind of the protagonist of the book W Central Parku [In Central Park] by Wojciech Karpiński. I analyze the protagonist’s behavior in the perspective of Antonio Damasio’s neurobiological research. Memory is one of the factors that participate in the creation of images in the artist’s mind. It is a dynamic phenomenon that collects memories evoked by various stimuli. It also participates in the creation of the autobiographical ‘self’ of the protagonist.

The author attempts to determine the role of imagination in (literary) translation Definitions of various types of imagination, taken from dictionary, or discussed in psychological works, are referred to in relation to processes occurring in the mind of a recipient of text (the readertranslator and the intended reader of translation) confronted with the original, defined as “the Other’s word.” The discussion is illustrated by three selected examples of relations between imagination and foreign cultural determinants: a poet’s reference to an outdated, idealised cognitive model, reference to the Other’s realities of material culture, and grammatical determination of a cultural cognitive model. The article ends with conclusions related to the notion of translation equivalence.

The article presents the critical reading of Anita Jarzyna’s Imaginauci. Pismo wyobraźni w poezji Bolesława Leśmiana, Józefa Czechowicza, Krzysztofa Kamila Baczyńskiego, Tadeusza Nowaka, the book devoted to the poets who share the belief in the creative power of words. Jarzyna uses the concept of the religious text to introduce the notion of the text of imagination. It allows her to treat imagination as an interpretative category and poetic theme. The author of the review sees Jarzyna’s book as an invaluable insight into each poet’s works but also as a unique “textual” treatment of imagination. At the same time the article opens the discussion about metaphorizing and creating of critical literary discourse.

Jean-Henri Fabre made numerous discoveries observing meticulously the lifestyle and behaviour of insects which lived around his traditional house in Provence. Those discoveries are still valid, even though the heterodox entomologist became the standard bearer for opponents of transformism, which perpetually progressed and is about to triumph. Fabre is first known to have been an outstanding observer, but also to have gathered together in a colossal collection his entomologist’s memoirs, whose literary – and even poetic – value is celebrated as far away as Japan. This article proposes to question the validity of the preconceived idea that Les Souvenirs entomologiques adds to the accurate eye of the observer the fertile imagination of the poet. Refusing to just make note of this a posteriori superposition, it hypothesizes that there is a reunification of the inflexible empiricism of the biological approach with a creative imagination which reveals to be omnipresent in every phase of Fabre’s enterprise: the hypothesis, the validation by observation, and the literary transcription.

In the article I demonstrate some of the possible ways by which counterfactual imagination can lead people to innovation and the creation of novel and valuable solutions. I start with adopting the broad definition of counterfactuals, by which counterfactual imagination is understood as the ability to imagine alternative states of affairs which can relate to the past, present or future. I explain how counterfactual imagination differs from other sorts of imaginative and creative thoughts, pointing out that counterfactual types of thinking always rely on facts and involve a change in some features of the actual world, leaving other such features unaltered. I also show that the concept of counterfactual imagination can be useful when we aim to describe the very earliest manifestations of imaginative capacities in children, which can be seen in their make-believe games. All the mentioned characteristics of counterfactual imagination are further used to examine how what if and would be sorts of thinking and imagining might influence people’s creative performance. I conclude with the suggestion that-if guided properly-counterfactual imagination could be a truly valuable mental tool for innovation. This demonstration is partly influenced by Ruth Byrne’s multi-faceted analysis of counterfactual imagination, mainly from her book, The Rational Imagination: How People Create Alternatives to Reality.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of managers in organizations. Practitioners’ point of view, who fully engaged in the role, on that problem is compared with images constructed by students who use their imagination instead of knowledge or experience. The paper presents results of qualitative research conducted in two types of organizations – international organizations operating in the financial services industry and public university.

Opis:

The theme of Russia occupies a special place in the works of Ivan Bunin. He turns to Russia throughout his literary activity. In exile, his forsaken homeland becomes a source of special inspiration for the author, and a main subject for the book of his stories Dark Alleys, where Bunin included his Late Hour. In this short story, the author recalls lost places in his native land. The motive of the journey is plot-forming and connects two layers, which interact in the narrative: the journey that happened in the real past, and an imaginary journey. Bunin describes this imaginary journey as if it is happening in reality. The routes of these two journeys include new loci as Suez Canal, Nile, Paris..., which indicates the importance of the idea of geo-poetics for the author. Recollections in Bunin’s story Late Hour come up to the Memory, which tramples death. It proves the resurrectional power of art.

New theories and research methods as applied in the study of premodern literature and other arts as well, tend to ignore their essential differences from works of the modern era, the latter being formatted according to classicist aesthetic and transmitted mostly in one (printed) version. In case of oral and manuscript delivery there is no established unified text and criticism centered on one text is not possible. That is where the constructivist approach helps students of old arts understand the alterity of their research objects – first of all their disappearance in the streams of delivery where they undergo quite different rhetorical treatment, abbreviations and reductions, interpolations and enlargements, transformations up to genre change, modality switch, etc. The awareness to the above, enriched with procedures providing the works an afterlife, such as enarrations, adaptations and translations, may help also students of modern works exceed the narrow frames of traditional text-bound criticism.

The imagination is powerful, in part, because of the emotions that can be activated by imagining future states. Imagined future states are a key feature of the L2 self-system proposed by Dƅrnyei, and emotion may be the key to the motivational quality of the imagined future self. In particular, this paper focuses on positive anticipated and anticipatory emotions related to language learning. It is argued that, in general, positive emotion has a different function from negative emotion; they are not opposite ends of the same spectrum. Based on the work of Fredrickson, we argue that positive emotion facilitates the building of resources because positive emotion tends to broaden a person’s perspective, opening the individual to absorb the language. In contrast, negative emotion produces the opposite tendency, a narrowing of focus and a restriction of the range of potential language input. This article draws a framework for finding a balance between the positivebroadening and negative-narrowing emotions in the language classroom, and beyond. The emotion system is an engine for the positive-broadening power of the imagination.

Celem tekstu jest pokazanie aksjologicznych konsekwencji zwrotu ontologicznego, jaki dokonał się w studiach nad nauką i techniką. W tekście autor posługuje się autorską koncepcją wyobraźni ontologicznej, która jest radykalizacją wyobraźni socjologicznej C. W. Millsa. Autor przeanalizował trzy sposoby interpretacji ludobójstwa w Rwandzie. Pokazał, że przejście od epistemocentrycznego do ontologicznego sposobu analizy pozwala uniknąć impasu relatywistycznego. Proponuje rozwiązanie w postaci „ontologicznych polityk” i „ontonorm” (A. Mol). Dzięki czemu uwidacznia się ontologiczny wymiar wyborów aksjologicznych.
The purpose of this article is to show consequences of the ontological turn in studies on science and technology. In article the author uses as a conceptual tool the concept of ontological imagination, which is a radicalization of the sociological imagination (C. W. Mills). Author analyzes three ways of interpreting the genocide in Rwanda. To avoid the relativistic deadlock he proposes a shift from the epistemocentric to ontological approach method. This shift may be defined as “ontological policies” and “ontonorms” (A. Mol). In result, ontological dimensions of axiological choices are revealed.

This article compares British novelist Julian Barnes’s novel A History of the World in 10½ Chapters with the novel The Incomplete Manuscript by Azerbaijani author Kamal Abdulla. In each novel accepted history is revised, the idea that history is subjective is explored, as well as the fact that history is fiction, and in the process a new alternative history is written. The postmodern liberation strategy of both authors emphasizes history, past revision, history’s subjectivity, as well as the creation of a new alternative history to make history fictitious. The idea of history, catastrophe, error and human foolishness in Barnes’s novel is similar to the ideas of a fictitious, imagined, authenticated reality in Abdulla’s novel. This form of narration in Barnes’s and Abdulla’s novels is concerned with the ironic modes of 20thcentury thinking and the fact that human thinking has cast doubt on our understanding of the world. In Barnes’s novel, history is a catastrophe, an erroneous ghost, while in the novel by Abdulla we find fiction, fabrication, and reality.

Artistic space, presented in the story Kabala by A. Potyomkin, can be seen in various hypostases. The real, ethereal and ill-fated areas of the imagination of the main character connect with his opium dependence. Parfirchikov’s imagination is tightly connected with nostalgia, which manifests itself in the escape from the real world into the dreamed space of his inner world. Every character’s transformation from one space into another takes place after the dose of drug is taken by him.

The symbolic dimension of mineral paradise in Sand’s vision is the focus of reflection. The vision stems partly from the romantic anti-materialistic concepts, and partly seems to be the expression of the preoccupations with the material and the oriental both of the epoch and of the author of Laura... herself.

Congenital aphantasia, or the complete absence of mental imagery, is a topic that has recently aroused the interest of researchers in many fields including philosophy, psychology and cognitive sciences. While it is generally supposed that we all have rich mental lives full of imaged representations, estimates suggest 2-3% of the population may have never formed an image or seen ‘in the mind’s eye.’ This paper aims to address the scepticism surrounding aphantasia, the challenges in communicating about mental imagery, and the research methods used in cognitive sciences today through the lens of Wittgenstein’s philosophy. The paper argues that 1) communicating about mental imagery involves language games that persons with aphantasia may not be able to play (i.e., makes reference to expressions and concepts that are meaningless for them, such as ‘visualise,’ ‘form an image,’ etc.); 2) that as a consequence aphantasia, in present research, is only describable negatively (as lack or incapacity); 3) that rather than a cognitive or a psychological issue, aphantasia should be understood as a grammatical one; and 4) that we need to invent new language games in order to come to a better understanding of conditions such as aphantasia, and to be able to appreciate the rich diversity and variability of human experience.

W niniejszym artykule idę tropem tego, co można odnaleźć w literaturze pięknej jako przydatnej wiedzy dla socjologii. Uznaję, że świat społeczny zawarty w literaturze pięknej można traktować jako źródło „inspiracji do analizy socjologicznej” (P. Ćwikła), a także jako samo pole badawcze. Poruszam również interesującą kwestię badawczą, jaką jest związek między wyobraźnią socjologiczną a wyobraźnią literacką. Obie są ze sobą pokrewne i obie mają równie ważne zadania w opisywaniu, rozumieniu (czy próbie zrozumienia) rzeczywistości społecznej. Można rzec, że wyobraźnia literacka jest starszą siostrą wyobraźni socjologicznej. Dlatego, moim zdaniem, socjolog nie powinien bagatelizować wyobraźni literackiej, a pisarz (literat) nie powinien bagatelizować wyobraźni socjologicznej. Staram się ukazać wagę obu wyobraźni dla rozumienia, opisywania i prezentowania rzeczywistości społecznej, zwłaszcza że nie można nie uznawać, że obie (wyobraźnie) przez swoje źródła – literaturę i socjologię – nie są ze sobą spokrewnione. Także uznaję, że literatura i socjologia mogą uczyć się od siebie nawzajem i dzięki temu rozwijać się (D. Alworth).
In this article, I follow the trail of it what can be found in the fine literature (belles-lettres) as a useful knowledge for sociology. I recognize that the social world contained in the literature can be treated as a source of “inspiration for sociological analysis” (P. Ćwikła) and also as a research field. I also raise an interesting research issue, which is the relationship between sociological imagination and literary imagination. Both are related and both have equally important tasks in describing, understanding (or attempting to understand) social reality. It can be said that literary imagination is the older sister of sociological imagination. Therefore, in my opinion, a sociologist should not underestimate the literary imagination, and a writer (literary man) should not embroider the sociological imagination. The importance of both imaginations for understanding, describing and presenting social reality is becoming apparent, especially since it can not be said that both (imaginatively) through their sources – literature and sociology – are not related to each other. I also recognize that literature and sociology can learn from each other and thus develop (D. Alworth).

It is therefore determined (or “created”) by culture, or rather by innumerable cultural texts, which affect our common, i.e. culture-dependent imagination. In both cases “the map” should not be considered as a representation in its traditional meaning of something essentially present or given. Instead, Deleuzian metaphors of the rhizome and the fold seem more convenient here, as they highlight this unready, process- and interpretation-dependent character. The sets of metaphorical notions, such as “fold/ply”, “double fold/twofold/two-ply” and “folding/creasing/ironing imaginary maps” are used in this paper to clarify the idea of “antechamber effect”. In consequence, this is a phenomenon which, within the realm of literary imagination, renders some real territories with weak cultural potential nonexistent.

Zygmunt Bauman is known to be one of the leading social theorists and commentators in contemporary sociology whose theoretical or diagnostical analysis of phenomena such as globalisation, community, identity, genocide, individualisation or modernity warrants his status as one of the most widely read sociologists of our time. However, Bauman throughout his work also develops an often overlooked methodological stance based to a certain extent on metaphorical reasoning. Throughout this piece, the authors focus attention on Bauman’s metaphorical cornucopia and how it is informed by a deep-seated moral commitment. Apart from performing the function of methodological devices unveiling a selective and subjective, yet deeper, understanding of the social world, the metaphors also reveal the inherently moral core of Bauman’s sociological endeavour.

Violence, as a concept, has shaped most of human history and discourse. Over the centuries, the concept has gone through dynamic evolutions and should be understood in relation to diverse agents such as nation, nostalgia, and culture. Modern society’s tendency to impede and constrain overt forms of violence has paved the way for covert forms to exist in socio-cultural spheres. Cultural violence is one such realization where aggression gets exercised covertly through heterogenous mediums such as language, regulations, mass media, and most importantly cultural practices. Its topological structures can be traced in national imagination and a sense of cultural nostalgia originating out of it, that ultimately formulates cultural “otherness.” In Gandhian philosophy, the absence of physical aggression is insignificant, if not complemented with the eradication of violence from the cultural and intellectual strata. Gandhi’s critique of exclusive nationalism and narrowness is reflective of a distinct kind of cultural topology that generates structural violence and with the due course of history it gets legitimacy to exert power over the cultural binary it constructed. The fundamental questions of the paper are associated with assessing the role of national imagination and cultural imperatives in germinating the structures of violence in culture, exclusive nationalism, and Gandhian reconsideration of peace in the context of covert violence in the material and intellectual realms.

The aim of the paper is to draw politico-aesthetic consequences from Martha Nussbaum’s capabilities approach. It is argued that this can be achieved by focusing on the notion of vulnerability implied by the idea of capabilities. The recognition of the vulnerability of the human good inspires a new model of practical rationality based on perception. This idea, in turn, explores the aesthetic connotations of perception implied by its etymology (the ancient Greek for perception being aesthesis). Thus, political aesthetics is understood as the inquiry into the political consequences of the affinity between ethics and aesthetics, as well as the political relevance of the notion of beauty.

This study describes the issue of maladaptive daydreaming. This phenomenon is becoming a contemporary educational problem because it limits the development potential of children and adolescents as well as their interpersonal relations. The field of possible understanding of maladaptive daydreamingin relation to terms related in meaning was outlined, as well as the current attempts at its scientific conceptualization. In my analysis, I go beyond the dualistic understanding of the children’s real and imaginary world, referring to the cultural-historical theory of the development of creative imagination as a higher mental function as an internalized system of social relations. From this perspective, the phenomenon of daydreaming in children and adolescents, in relation to reality, is not treated in a dichotomous way, but as a social development situation.

We will examine the largely ethical vocation of Romain Gary's memorial writing project, which leads it to metamorphose itself into a literary tomb of the forgotten dead. We will then discuss, from a more narratological point of view, how this memory emerges untimely in the narrative and sometimes frees itself from it to signify the transcendent character of the name and the face. Finally, we will show that Gary goes beyond the somewhat naive vision of the memory as a mere recorder of events or images by associating it with the imagination to give it a poetic and counter-historical use.

In this article, I analyze the social determinants of the development of creative imagination. Due to its importance, this phenomenon is one of the main areas of research in pedagogy and psychology, which, however, despite numerous analyzes, has not been sufficiently explained. One interpretation of the understanding of imagination as a social mental activity is outlined here. This approach is presented mainly in the works of L.S. Vygotski and his students. Their analyses go beyond the mechanical understanding of the imagination and the dualistic division of the imagined and real worlds. The cultural-historical theory of the development of creative imagination describes it as an internalized system of social relations. The development of this form of imagination, according to Vygotsky, is the main goal of human development. The most effective way to achieve it is education, which “nurtures” in the child all manifestations of a socially creative imagination.

In the years 2011-2014, a research on geometrical predispositions was conducted among the first-year students of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Land Surveying at the Agricultural University of Cracow. Students of four faculties were included in the research. Each of the 280 included students answered 10 simple questions regarding geometry, which were designed to assess to our best ability especially the spatial imagination of the students. Also, the knowledge of basic geometry, acquired in primary and secondary school, was essential. What is more, the students could also show their drawing abilities, but it was the oral exam that prevailed. To sum up our research, we can support the thesis, that the predispositions of the spatial imagination of the students Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Land Surveying at the Agricultural University of Cracow in the years 2011 – 2014 were directly connected to the field of study. It could result from the attractiveness of the faculty itself, which is strictly connected to the number of candidates – different on each faculty.
W latach 2011-14, wśród studentów rozpoczynających I rok studiów na Wydziale Inżynierii Środowiska i Geodezji Uniwersytetu Rolniczego w Krakowie przeprowadzono badania predyspozycji geometrycznych. Objęto nimi osoby przyjęte na cztery kierunki studiów. Każdy z badanych 280 studentów odpowiadał na 10 prostych pytań z zakresu geometrii, pozwalających ocenić w miarę możliwości przede wszystkim wyobraźnię przestrzenną, przy czym niezbędna była również wiedza z podstawowych zagadnień geometrycznych uzyskiwana w szkole podstawowej i średniej. Ponadto studenci mogli wykazać się umiejętnością rysowania, ale liczyła się odpowiedź słowna. W podsumowaniu badań, można przychylić się do tezy, że predyspozycje wyobraźni przestrzennej u studentów Wydziału Inżynierii Środowiska i Geodezji Uniwersytetu Rolniczego w Krakowie w latach 2011-14 były bezpośrednio związane z kierunkiem studiów. Mogło to wynikać z atrakcyjności kierunku, a co za tym idzie liczbą kandydatów - różną na poszczególnych kierunkach.

W artykule przedstawiona została metoda testowania wyobraźni przestrzennej, którą wykorzystano jako element egzaminów wstępnych na Wydziale Wzornictwa Przemysłowego Uniwersytetu Technicznego w Koszycach (Słowacja). Autorka opisała sposób przeprowadzenia testów, opis statystyczny uzyskanych wyników oraz ich związek z oceną uzdolnień plastycznych kandydatów na w/w studia. Przeprowadzone badania nie wykazały związku między ocenami z testu na wyobraźnię przestrzenną a oceną z uzdolnień plastycznych. W końcowej części artykułu przeprowadzono analizę, której celem jest ustalenie przyczyn takiego stanu.

Purpose: The article introduces a concept of the economic imagination, describes economic public attitudes and discusses the character of the contemporary economic imagination of Poles. Methodology: Representative survey conducted on the stratifi ed random sample of 1022 adult respondents by means of CAPI (computer assisted personal interview). Statistical analysis of data. Findings: The features perceived by public as economically benefi cial to the entire economy, particular enterprises and individuals have been ranked by the representative survey and statistically grouped into more general clusters. Those considered as good for the economy are grouped into such factors as “investment and competition”, “statism (etatism)” and “progressive taxation”. The features considered as benefi cial for the enterprises are grouped into “human, social and economic capital”, “law obedience and good social relations” and “limited free market”. Personal characteristics perceived as benefi cial for individual’s economic success are grouped into “honesty, perseverance and good social relations”, “skills and diligence” and “nepotism and instrumentalism”. Intensity as well as determinants of such general value loaded convictions, and their impact on acceptance of democracy have been revealed as well. The implications: Economic imagination has to be analysed as an important factor of socio-economic system’s legitimization. Originality: Distinction and empirical defi nition of economic attitudinal syndromes at three different levels: macro-economic, enterprise and individual constitute a novelty in socio-economic research. Discussion of their determinants and wider implications constitute a new contribution to the theory of social legitimization.

The analysis relies on two visual narratives confronting the theme of cultural difference. The coronavirus pandemic has shaken the world and its long shadow will remain with us for many years. It is presenting humanity with incredible challenges, which coincide with other negative mega-trends. The enormous costs of the pandemic will only be known ex post. While some people will have lost nothing, others will have lost everything-sometimes even their lives. The heterogeneous, post-pandemic future will follow many paths, with the position of highly developed countries becoming relatively weaker. Tensions between the US and China will increase; geopolitics will change. The confrontation between democracy and authoritarianism will intensify; the synergy of the market and the state will be transformed. It will be particularly dangerous to view two sides of the same counterfeit coin as alternatives: neoliberal capitalism versus populist capitalism. The chance for a better future could be created by a gradual transition to a new pragmatism, a strategy of moderation in economic matters, and a development that is sustainable on three levels-economic, social, and ecological. The pandemic is also an immense challenge for the social sciences because old ways of thinking will often prove useless in analyzing and explaining new situations.

Imagination is rarely acknowledged as one of the main workhorses of learning. Unfortunately, disregarding the imagination has some clearly negative pedagogical impacts: Learning is more ineffective than it should be and much schooling is more tedious than it need be. In this paper, we outline a somewhat new way of thinking about the process of students’ language education. We focus on the kinds of “cognitive tools” or learning “toolkits” human beings develop as they grow up, which connect emotion and imagination with knowledge in the learning process. We show how employing these tools-indeed, how their central employment in all aspects of planning-can make learning other languages engaging and meaningful.

Florian Znaniecki acknowledged that upbringing can be treated as a social fact. He justified his claim by using arguments derived from social sciences, especially from sociology. Thus this method (sociological) is an appropriate tool of description and analysis of upbringing (education). It is important to notice close and derivative elements of social reality in the notion of upbringing or education. According to the theory of Charles Wright Mills, the sociologist, thanks to the use of so-called sociological imagination, the analysis of social life elements is more complete, more vital and possible for practical (personal and social) applications. Therefore, undertaking such a research perspective, one can observe educational processes within a wider social context by applying the rigorous methodology of analytic and testing procedure as well as attempting to develop even wider concept of sociological and educational imagination. It demonstrates that the problem of education and upbringing goes beyond the narrow scope of an autonomous discipline (e.g., pedagogy) and finds the answers to the questions/requirements of contemporaneity thanks to an interdisciplinary perspective (at least in relation to sociology).
Florian Znaniecki uznał, iż wychowanie można traktować jako fakt społeczny. Uzasadnił to argumentacją pochodzącą z nauk społecznych, zwłaszcza z socjologii. Ta więc metoda (socjologiczna) jest właściwym instrumentem opisu i analizy wychowania (edukacji). W samym pojęciu wychowania bądź edukacji należy zauważyć inne, bliskie i pochodne im elementy rzeczywistości społecznej. Nawiązując do tezy, jaką wystosował socjolog Charles Wright Mills, poprzez zastosowanie tzw. wyobraźni socjologicznej, analiza elementów życia społecznego jest pełniejsza, żywotniejsza i możliwa dla praktycznych (osobistych i społecznych) aplikacji. Podejmując zatem taką perspektywę badawczą, można przyjrzeć się procesom edukacyjnym i wychowawczym na tle szerszego kontekstu społecznego, stosując przy tym rygorystyczną metodologię postępowania analityczno-badawczego, i dokonując próby wypracowania szerszej jeszcze koncepcji wyobraźnia, mianowicie, socjologiczno-pedagogiczna Jest to także argument przemawiający za tym, iż problem edukacji i wychowania wykracza poza wąski zakres dyscypliny autonomicznej (jaką jest np. pedagogika) a dzięki interdyscyplinarnej perspektywie (przynajmniej w odniesieniu do socjologii) znajduje także odpowiedzi na pytania-wymogi współczesności.

The article indicates that in the presence of various crises of foster care, there is a confusion of the district family support center, institutions not seeing and not hearing the needs of foster families and orphanages. It is emphasized that the reconstruction of the ability to hear problems and see the complex issues of foster care, for the district aid institution to go beyond the horizon of foster care, crises requires the dialogue and the courage to act in the field of social matters. Then, in the conditions of a local community, where the dialogue is practised, the district family support center regains the ability to see and hear the matters of the wounded world. As a result, the district family support center shapes the capacity of communication activities accompanied with the development of the local community. At the same time, this shift towards district local communities inhabitants’ everyday life is expressed in active care for foster care within the framework of dialogue workshops and educational activities. Such an orientation, in a trialectic perspective, in the weave of three dimensions of space  the internal micro-space of the institution, the meso-space of foster care and the macro-social space of the local community – allows the district family support center to transform its activities in the field of social affairs, and experience the recognition of the inhabitants of local communities.

In the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, the power of imagination and artistic vocation are metaphorically represented as a pair of red dancing shoes. Just as in Andersen’s fable, the shoes are enchanted: they can open up new horizons and possibilities of existence and artistic expression to the one that wears them. But their inexhaustible power can also possess her, demand complete devotion, or even dance her to death. A hermeneutic reading of the three key scenes from the movie inspires a reflection on the dialectics of the power of imagination and its productive as well as destructive potential.

The article is aimed at showing the meaning of moral education in the processes of religious education. The authors pay attention to the meaning of moral values influencing man’s behaviour, attitudes to Self, other people, world, and God. Experience obtained in the relationship with Self, others and God has a significant role in the trajectory of educational processes, particularly the process of moral upbringing of a person. Attention paid to natural cognition and cognition rooted in God can help underlining the sense of religious education, also religious education of a child. Moral imagination producing moral images becomes the subject for analysis in terms of teacher’s responsibility concerning the selection of literature items, or ways of their analysis. Moral upbringing tightly connected with religious education elicits the meaning of work upon own character and catechesis as a tool enhancing its quality. The research question of this article can be posed: How does moral upbringing participate in the processes of religious education?

The subject of reflections in this article is the phenomenon of topographic imagination of Sławomir Mrożek. Tracking traces of autobiographical places in the writer’s works, the author attempts to explain the reasons for his little interest in the geographic concrete as a literary material as well as to answer the question what functions these places fulfill in "Dziennik powrotu" [A Journal of Return] and "Baltazar. Autobiografia" [Balthasar. Autobiography]. In her opinion, both the scarce presence of autobiographic places in the earlier works of Mrożek, as well as their appearance in the works referred to, remains in connection with the problem of the identity of the writer, who throughout most of his life struggled with the sense of non-existence, and after the stroke he had to redefine himself and his place in the world.

This article refers to a “fantastic” period in Zdzisław Beksiński’s painting (1929-2005). The quest for the sources of imagination of this original Polish artist has a broad cultural background. Its horizons are marked by Marcel Brion and Roger Caillois’s research on fantasy as well as G. R. Hocke’s assertion regarding the epoch of mannerism. Taking the above into consideration, it can be stated that imagination has an achronological character and in the case of the herein described painter it was a determinant of his aesthetic style and artistic attitude. His specific creative technique involved breaking with the order of reality, bordering on a dream and using the mannerist-like rhetorical figures. Beksiński’s “fantastic realism” was based on oneiric visions transferred into small drawing sketches. Their range encompassed unconscious elements, dream and nightmare iconography and a-logical narrative structures, which the artist complemented, added nuances and subsequently developed while working on his paintings. Specific motifs, forms and palette of colours and matter encroach on the presence of those primary visions – the authentic “pictures form under eyelids”. However, their anteriority in the act of creation was indisputable. They carried a special meaning for Beksiński by summarising intense sensations derived from reality and dreams, he could, just for a moment, project himself beyond the material world and the reigning of the passing time.

This text touches on one the crucial problems of the rising English aesthetic thought and its relations with nature. It is an attempt to study the sources of this new way of man's communing with the world that are present in Joseph Addison's writings. Addison was thought to be one of the founders of this attitude. The starting point was a double aesthetic experience. In his Pleasures of Imagination Addison distinguishes its delights as “primary” and “secondary”. To simplify it, the experience of nature and art, while its proper object of analyses were Remarks on Several Parts of Italy published in 1705, a report from Addison's Italian journey. This journey was his field of experience for his theory, and it ensured an insight into his own experience. This text attempts to examine the mutual relations and interdependencies between immediate experience of nature and Addison's poetic experience. It attempts to show the meaning of this relation for his aesthetic categories: novelty, the sublime, and beauty and most of all for his concept of imagination.

This paper presents pretending as an enacted and fundamentally social activity. First, it demonstrates why we should think of pretense as inherently social. Then, it shows how that fact affects our theory in terms of what is needed in order to pretend. Standardly, pretense is seen as requiring a mechanism that allows one to bypass the ‘obvious’ response to the environment in order to opt for a symbolic response; that mechanism is imaginative and representational. This paper shows that the Enactive Account of Pretense reconsiders the idea that one needs to respond to an absent environment when pretending, proposing instead that socially constituted perceptual affordances for play allow for non-obvious ways of responding to the present environment. The enactive account of pretense suggests that one need not posit special cognitive pretense mechanisms and mental scripts in order to account for pretending, as available capacities for active perception and re-enactment of routines suffice. This paper concludes with suggestions for the kinds of cognitive skills that should be sought out to explain pretense

The research material in this article is V. Nabokov’s short story A Nursery Tale (1926), which, by virtue of the literary genre signalled in the title, disposes us to consider the author’s communicative intention. The methodological inspiration for the research is M. Bakhtin’s genological reflection and his concept of the genre as “a representative of creative memory in the process of literature development”; W. Propp’s study and J. Derrida’s idea about fairy tales has also proved helpful. Analysis and interpretation of the short story A Fairy Tale has allowed one to distinguish particular elements and devices aimed at the short story genre transformation with special regard to the titular (fairy-tale) form of expression. The special status of the work’s protagonist is demonstrated, his creative activity understood as a kind of game, whose creator and actor is the protagonist himself, while the realisation of his erotic desire is treated as a way of regarding Femininity and of opening to “the other”, precisely connected in Nabokov’s short story with the female figure. On the parabolic/fabulous level the hero’s dream (collecting “a harem of women”) is interpreted as a literary device – an expression of romantic irony revealing the opposing forces governing human existence, a conflict between everyday reality and the world of creative fantasy/imagination. In consequence, Nabokov’s A Nursery Tale is read as an example of a narrative parabolic fairy tale.

The article interprets Jan Brzękowski’s poem “kolory” [couleurs]. Accepting the assumption that the reading of the Cracow avant-garde poetry, including Brzękowski’s works, requires the textual approach, the author of the article gives an in-depth discussion of rhetorical figures  (especially metaphors) and symbolic motifs (metals, colours, weather phenomena). Such reading of “kolory” turns the poem into a statement about the unique psychological (or even spiritual) experience of the lyrical self, who, after a crisis of darkness, has an insight “in the breaking dawn”.

Students of engineering are expected to have a good spatial imagination, which is essential for their work. Most people have to deal with some kind of 3D environment as well. But how can they get familiar with an abstract 3D space? A spatial imagination is not easy to gain, students have a lot of troubles with it and the situation seems to be getting worse. It seems clear that we need more methods how to improve and develop the abilities. The aim of this paper is to show four didactic games and aids for teachers. Each of them offers a program, the background for solving problems and a set of tasks for children or students from 10 to 20 years. We offer teachers a didactic material and mention some experience with using this software at grammar school.
Studenci dyscyplin technicznych potrzebują do swojej pracy dobrą wyobraźnię przestrzenną. Mimo, że ludzie żyją i pracują w przestrzeni trójwymiarowej, to studenci mają kłopoty z wyobraźnią przestrzenną abstrakcyjnej przestrzeni trójwymiarowej i sytuacja wydaje się z roku na rok gorsza. Potrzebujemy zatem więcej metod dla rozwoju i przećwiczenia powyższych zdolności. Celem tego artykułu jest przedstawienie czterech gier dydaktycznych i pomocy naukowych dla nauczycieli. Każda z nich oferuje program – ramy rozwiązywania problemów – i zbiór ćwiczeń dla dzieci lub studentów w wieku od 10 do 20 lat. In Comte’s vision, humanity progressed from a theological to a metaphysical to a positive phase. This transition was to be mirrored by the replacement of theology and metaphysics by a new science of society-sociology. Comte’s prophecy was quickly fulfilled-within a century the new discipline had successfully undermined the legitimacy of other systems of knowledge in the social realm-like philosophy, theology, and literature. Even theologians learned to adopt the findings of their rival and incorporate them into their framework. At the same time, the emerging social sciences borrowed heavily from theology, while trying to mask the debt. The recent constructivist turn has challenged social scholars to rethink that positivist paradigm. This article tries to take up the challenge and see whether theology and sociology can possibly learn from one another.

This paper explores pedagogical practices which can support the role of imagination in foreign language learning. Over the past decade, work on self and identity in motivation research-most notably Norton’s (2001) imagined communities and Dörnyei’s (2009) L2 motivational self system-has suggested that teachers might foster students’ motivation by helping them imagine themselves as L2 speakers and envisage contexts or communities in which they might use the target language. If teachers are to help students create and sustain visions of L2 identities, they need to employ a pedagogy which incorporates and facilitates the work of the imagination. In order to provide guidelines for pedagogical practice, this paper examines the experiences of Japanese university students studying English as a foreign language in a selfdirected learning course. Prior analysis of the data revealed several affordances which supported the participants’ metacognitive development and the role of imagination in their learning. Using these affordances as a conceptual framework, this paper builds on previous work by identifying elements in the learning environment which appear to support the role of imagination in the students’ language learning. The paper concludes by suggesting guidelines for pedagogical practice and considering the implications for further inquiry.

Claude Bernard’s use of the metaphor of the “living machine” in his writings may seem surprising, since the theorist of experimental medicine is usually known for his disciplined stylistic and scientific rigor. An examination of the different occurrences of the word “machine” in a representative corpus of Claude Bernard’s writings shows that this phrase, which has a long history, allows for the identification of different scientific degrees in the physiologist’s work. This metaphor, which is also a thought pattern, emerges with the Introduction to the Study of experimental Medicine in 1865; its use indicates that some texts or textual zones are less scientific than they are philosophical or generalist.

Opis:

Although Frank Ormsby’s poetry is associated with what Terry Eagleton has called tropes of irony and commitment, his 2009 collection Fireflies inclines, rather surprisingly, towards Wallace Stevens’s idea of imagination as a force impacting reality. Reading Ormsby’s volume against a selection of poems by Stevens unravels what appears to be a consistent affinity between the author of Harmonium and the Ulster-born poet. This affinity manifests itself, as the present paper aims to show, in the fact that in Fireflies, much like in Stevens, a form of perception of reality is delineated that is never to stagnate into an achieved balance.

Opis:

This article proposes to treat literature as a template of the collective imagination. The basis for discussion is Polish prose from 1986–2016, with the main thesis being that Polish culture has reached the limits of geographical imagination. This is the result of Poland withdrawing from the larger structures to which it once belonged or to which it aspired (its diminishing presence in the European Union, the disappearance of Central Europe, delayed efforts to pursue the Scandinavian model of the state and civic culture, the destruction of relations with Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine). Weakening or breaking ties with neighboring countries has led to isolation from all four sides. In order to get out of this impasse, it is necessary to develop new narratives that would link Poland with the neighboring cultures and would once again put our country back on the European map.  
Artykuł stanowi propozycję potraktowania literatury jako matrycy wyobraźni zbiorowej. Podstawą omówienia jest proza polska okresu 1986–2016, a teza główna mówi, że kultura polska dotarła do krańców wyobraźni geograficznej. Jest to rezultatem wyprowadzki z dotychczasowych większych całości, do których Polska należała bądź do których dążyła (osłabienie obecności w Unii Europejskiej, zniknięcie Europy Środkowej, zahamowanie procesu orientowania się na skandynawski model państwa i kultury obywatelskiej, kryzys w stosunkach z Litwą, Białorusią i Ukrainą). Osłabianie bądź zrywanie więzi z państwami sąsiedzkimi prowadzi do czterostronnej izolacji – czyli wspomnianych krańców wyobraźni geograficznej. Wyjście z impasu byłoby możliwe pod warunkiem wypracowania nowych narracji łączących Polskę z kulturami sąsiedzkimi i osadzających nasz kraj na europejskiej mapie.

Background. Delivering exceptional service experience and creating customer satisfaction and loyalty seems to be crucial for survival of a hotel organization and success in today’s highly competitive market. Gaining competitive advantage requires extreme responsiveness and sensitivity from hotel employees towards guests and treating them in a very individual manner. This may make rigid service scripts prevent maintaining this flexibility, which often leads to serious problems connected with role ambiguity experienced by employees. Research aims. This study attempts to seek an answer to the question: how to minimize the role ambiguity experienced by hotel staff. Therefore, the relationship between hotel employees’ creativity and role ambiguity is analyzed. Additionally, selected conditions that promote employee’s creative performance are also investigated.Methodology. In order to achieve the study aim, the literature review, including empirical findings of previous studies, and empirical research based on a survey method were employed. The study was conducted among all hotel employees having direct face-to-face and voice-to-voice interactions with hotel guests, working in two hotels located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, precisely in Tricity, as the tourist destination of Northern Poland.Key findings. The results showed a negative and significant correlation between employee creativity and role ambiguity. It may confirm that in the face of dynamically changing customer needs and preferences, employees’ creativity when serving customers may lead to reducing employees’ uncertainty how to perform effectively to provide outstanding service. The findings also revealed that both employees’ intellect/imagination (as a personality variable) and skill variety (as a job characteristic) should be taken into account to increase creativity in the workplace, as both of them positively related to hotel employees’ creativity in this study. Despite the fact that the study findings should not be generalized, the results provide some important information for substantive discussion and a context for a wider range of further studies. Discussion and managerial implications were also provided and directions for future research were formulated.

In order to initiate and maintain meaningful interaction in a young learner L2 classroom, an adult teacher needs to approach children in ways consistent with their developmental profile and adjust teaching methodology so as to accommodate young learners’ current skills. This requires the ability to predict the child’s possible responses to classroom events by imagining what s/he might think and how s/he might behave when presented with specific instructions. Bearing in mind that the teacher’s perception of the world is purely and completely adult in nature, in order to be effective, educators need to create a mental image or a concept of a young learner by gathering knowledge about his or her developmental characteristics and fully grasping the pedagogical implications of this knowledge. In this paper, we aim to explore the role of imagination in the conceptualisation of a child as a second language learner amongst university level pre-service teachers involved in an early primary EFL education programme. We report on qualitative research based on data obtained in the course of a two semester teacher training course of 35 BA and 30 MA students majoring in English. In the study, we focused on the working image of the child’s developmental characteristics created by the participants and their ability to employ this in their teaching. Our data show a substantial discrepancy between the participants’ theoretical conceptions concerning the business of teaching and the actual actions undertaken during lessons with young learners. Although participants were able to successfully identify the most distinctive developmental characteristics of primary-level learners, they experienced difficulty with integrating them into actual classroom practice.

The article discusses representation of a third culture in translation: it compares the image of Gdańsk as a city with strong German cultural presence, presented in Stefan Chwin’s novel Hanemann, with the same image in Ksenia Starosielska’s Russian translation of the novel. The image of the old Danzig in Chwin’s work consists of linguistic allusions and references to German literature: interpolations, German proper names, realities from early decades of the 20th century, and the figure of Heinrich von Kleist. Some elements of language and notions in the novel could seem more distant for a R ussian reader than for a Polish one. The present author considers, thus, if and how reality and topography of the city have been presented to secondary receipients. The article focuses on the translator’s strategy of approach to a third culture, reflected both in translator’s choices in the main text, as well as the number and formulation of footnotes. Because images of places in text are also created by non-verbal means, the graphical paratexts are also interesting for the discussion. The transformations are discussed in terms of refraction, which leads to conclusions about the role of the analyzed translation in its target culture.

The objective of the presented article consists in the juxtaposition of two depictions of mechanisms of imagination which we use to create averaged images of all sensual experiences. The first of them is Kantian normal idea conducive to the construction of adherent beauty, whereas the second - Santayana’s concept of formation of a generic idea, aesthetic type or an ideal. It is my conviction that both these proposals are convergent, as they refer to the same method of functioning of the imagination, however they differ in certain details, as they are inscribed in nearly entirely opposite aesthetic concepts. However, Santayana’s theory of character creation goes further than Kant’s concept, as it exceeds the averaged image of the normal idea, and, while not being equivalent to Kantian aesthetic idea constituting a certain product of genius, it heads towards the idealisation of representations available to all people. The purpose behind Santayana’s concept proves to be more practical as compared to the solution proposed by Kant. In this depiction, we should recognise a universal mechanism of the imagination in the formation of characters as aesthetic forms, enabling a person to define his/her place and gain knowledge on the human world of attitudes, customs and ordinary behaviours.

Definiowanie przestrzeni architektonicznej rozpoczyna się zanim zostanie ona wyrażona językiem form środowiska zbudowanego. Koncept architektoniczny osiąga zaawansowane stadia już w wyobraźni twórcy. Przed przystąpieniem do realizacji musimy przecież ocenić wartość funkcjonalną i estetyczną, sprawdzić trwałość, przekonać się o bezpieczeństwie. Wszystko to czynimy, używając modeli oraz wizualizując ich istotne cechy. Warsztatowa użyteczność przestrzennej reprezentacji zależy od trafności przyjętej metody odwzorowania oraz sprawności komunikowania. Okazuje się jednak, że znaczenie modeli w architekturze przekracza ramy zastosowań praktycznych. Są idee przestrzenne, które nie powstają w zamiarze budowania. Dla nich modelowe środowisko pozostaje jedynym medium przekazu informacji. W najbardziej ogólnym znaczeniu rzeczywistość wirtualna jest każdą nieistniejącą i możliwą do wyobrażenia przestrzenią o cechach architektonicznych. W artykule zostały przedstawione dawne, współczesne i futurystyczne realizacje koncepcji wirtualnego środowiska. Są wśród nich projekty tworzone przez architektów oraz inne prace twórcze, których treść odpowiada zainteresowaniom sztuki kształtowania przestrzeni. W analizie i interpretacji zjawisk posłużono się aparatem oceny skoncentrowanym na modelu przestrzennym oraz na sposobach jego prezentacji.
Defining the architectural space begins before it is expressed in the language of the built environment. Architectural concept reaches advanced stage in the imagination of the creator. Before starting the implementation, we must evaluate the functional and aesthetic value, check the durability, and be convinced about the safety. We do all of this using models, and visualizing essential features of the design. 3D representation constitutes crucial design method which depends on the accuracy of the adopted mapping and efficiency of communication. However, the importance of models in architecture exceeds the practical applications. There are spatial ideas that do not arise with the intention of building. The model environment remains the only medium to publish them. In the most general sense, virtual reality is any non–existent and imaginable space with architectural characteristics. The paper presents traditional, contemporary and futuristic realizations of virtual environment concepts. Among them – projects created by architects and other works, corresponding to the topic of the art of shaping space. Apparatus focused on the spatial model and on the methods of its presentation have been used in the analysis and interpretation of phenomena.

This is an edited transcript of the audio recording of the roundtable on Future, Democracy, and Platforms, which was organized at the EUMEPLAT project meeting at Charles University in Prague on 15 January 2024, in collaboration with the MeDeMAP (Mapping Media for Future Democracies) project. The current digital public spaces have been transformed by platformization, and besides the positive consequences such as democratization of communication or access to information, these processes driven by algorithms have brought political, cultural, and economic asymmetries. At the roundtable, we discussed challenges and threats to fostering more democratic platform environments in the future with experts from fields such as digital and economic anthropology or new media philosophy. Among the discussed platform related topics were public and cooperative ownership, the need to strengthen their democracy and imagination or pleasure as the key principles.

Horacio Kustos is a traveler faithful to the tradition of literature in unexplored territories, adventurer of the unusual and explorer of places without limits. Although Alberto Chimal seeks to distance himself from the term "fantastic", he is an author whose literary fidelity and commitment are reflected in his quest to lead literature to explore the possibilities of the imaginary. In this article, I return to the writer's discussion about what he calls "literature of imagination" and focus on one of his most emblematic characters Horacio Kustos, an unprecedented figure in Mexican literature, who has characteristics that recall mythical travelers and reveal the possibilities of creative imagination, independently of categorizations or terminologies.
Horacio Kustos es un viajero leal a la tradición de la literatura de los territorios inexplorados, de la aventura de lo insólito y de los lugares sin límites. Si bien Alberto Chimal busca desligarse del término “fantástico”, se trata de un autor cuya fidelidad y compromiso literarios se ven reflejados en su búsqueda por llevar a la literatura a explorar lo imaginario. En el presente artículo retomo la discusión del escritor en torno a lo que él denomina “literatura de imaginación” y propongo como uno de sus personajes más emblemáticos a Horacio Kustos, personaje sin precedentes en la literatura mexicana, quien posee características que rememoran viajeros míticos y revelan las posibilidades de la imaginación creativa por ella misma, independientemente de las categorizaciones o terminologías.

Ukazano dalej znaczenie Liryków lozańskich, w których zostały stworzone transcendentne formy poetyckie oddające inność Bytu mistycznego. Następnie opisano, jak Słowacki rozwija te formy w poezji genezyjskiej, tworząc zespół technik poetyckich ujmujących różne aspekty świata transcendentnego. Zbadano w szkicu także najbardziej niezwykłe, apofatyczne zjawiska poezji Słowackiego wyprowadzające poetyckie poznanie poza Byt, w przestrzeń Boskiego Pra-gruntu bliskiego mistyce Böhmego i Mistrza Eckharta.
The article is an attempt to describe a model of mystical poetry in Polish Romanticism. The analysis begins with a look at the image of the mystical vision in Adam Mickiewicz’s poem − “Widzenie” [“The Vision”]. Next, the importance of the Lausanne poems, with their transcendent poetic forms that show the otherness of the mystical being, is presented. Afterwards, a description of how Słowacki develops these poetic forms in the genesis poetry is provided. Słowacki created a set of exceptional poetic techniques that present many aspects of the transcendent world. The most unusual, apophatic phenomena of Słowacki’s poetry were also examined. It has been shown how these late poetic forms lead poetic cognition outside of Being and into the space of the Divine Pre-Ground. These turn out to be close to the mysticism of Böhme and Eckhart

Posługując się poetyckim studium historii miast zaproponowanym przez Wystana Hugh Audena, stawiamy tezę o głęboko polemicznym charakterze miasta. Żywiołem polis jest polemos, spór, konflikt, który w długiej historii miast przybierał postać dychotomicznego napięcia – między posiadającymi a nieposiadającymi, arystokratami i sankiulotami. Tak długo, jak napięcie to zachowa ów binarny kształt, miasto będzie powielało swą dotychczasową historię z wszystkimi jej błędami. Współczesne miasto tworzy zbyt wiele elementów, zbyt mocno wirtualne interweniuje w realne, by dało się myśleć o przyszłości w kategoriach prostych opozycji. Jak proponuje Gilles Deleuze, model dotychczasowy opierający się na owych opozycjach wraz z podtrzymującym i wyostrzającym je systemem nakazów i zakazów powinien zostać zastąpiony przez model, w którym główną rolę odgrywają pragnienia, afekty i marzenia jednostek; te zaś nie poddadzą się dialektycznej analizie. Stawką jest więc miasto tyleż rzeczywiste, co wyobrażeniowe, choć to ostatnie określenie nie oznacza, że całkowicie nierealne i wymyślone. Miasto traktowane „osobiście” (tak nazywa Andrew Merrifield stanowisko Guy Deborda i Louisa Chevaliera): miasto nabierające ciała, to znaczy jawiące się nam warstwowo i gruboziarniście. Miasto znane nam osobiście, co wskazuje nie tylko na mnie jako na osobę, ale przede wszystkim na miasto zyskujące osobowy status, z jego historią, widocznymi i niewidocznymi dziejami, śladami, znakami, które skryły się w podświadomości czasu.
Starting with Richard Hamilton’s famous collage and W.H. Auden’s poetic rendition of the history of cities, we argue that what the Greeks called polemos has been the very element of urbanity. The conflict could imply tensions between the rich and the poor, aristocrats or the hoi polloi, but we have reached the stage at which such a rigorously dichotomic vision of the conflict does not provide one with an appropriate approach towards the phenomenon of urbanity. The model of binary oppositions should be supplanted by a much more diverse scheme which would allow for the integration of such elements as affects, desires, and dreams, the factors which do not readily succumb to dialectical analysis. Hence, following Deleuze, Merrifield, and Debord, we want to see the city as an intricate structure of many-layered elements, both physical and imagined

According to the traditional view, the notion of imagination in early modern aesthetics was a rather marginal and subsidiary concept within the classical doctrine of mimesis dominated by rules and reason. The present paper raises some doubts about this well-established opinion. It argues that even if imagination in early modern aesthetics did not play as prominent role as in Romantic poetics, the concept had significant relevance. It presents one important episode from the Renaissance debate on imagination, which arose from the sixteenth century literary quarrel over the artistic quality and the uncertain genre of Dante’s Commedia. Its main distinctive category was “fantastic imitation” — a concept derived from Plato, yet misunderstood and thus transformed.

The powerful spreading of new technologies and the mass media civilization have had a subtle, stealthy effect onthe human imagination, a process that has its counterpart in external reality, in historical changes and in society.The role of imagination through historical changes was extensively explored by Ioan P. Culianu, a Romanian historian of religions and specialist in Late Antiquity and gnosticism, whose research was brutally interrupted by his assassination on May 21, 1991. He was shot to death around midday inside of a toilet at the Depart- ment of the Divinity School of the University of Chicago where he was teaching. He was only 41 years old.One of his main books is Eros and magic in the Renaissance (The University of Chicago Press, 1987), whichhas been translated into many languages and is probably one of the most complex and interesting 20th-century studies on magic. He points out that the working of fantasy was fundamental to comprehend magical processes in the Renaissance, since magic was primarily directed to affect human imagination through the manipulation of phantams (‘images’ in Greek). He has been also a pioneer in the study of the historical vicissitudes that caused imagination to change from a civilization based on magic, as in the Renaissance, to a modern one based on science. To the scholar, the transition from a magic-based society to a modern one is explicable primarily by a change in the imaginary.One of the purposes of this paper is to shed light on the work of Ioan P. Culianu, especially on his research onmagic, which he carried out throughout his life. Particularly interesting are the articles published in the last period of his life (1990–1991), when he was trying to develop a new paradigm of knowledge in the Humani-ties, concentrating on the study of the mind. He was shaping an original but uncompleted theory where the ‘cognitive revolution’ was to be applied across and beyond the contexts of human science.

W niniejszym artykule poszukuję odpowiedzi na pytanie: Jakie są sensy i znaczenia metafor we Wrocławskiej Szkole Przyszłości (WSP)? Ukazuję zastosowanie języka metaforycznego w szkole, gdzie metaforę traktuje się jako źródło wiedzy o otaczającym świecie, jako swoiste wspomaganie efektywniejszej komunikacji oraz jako stymulator wyobraźni. We WSP uważa się, że dziecko nie musi być skazane na edukację opartą na stereotypowych zachowaniach. Uważa się tam, że w procesie edukacji potrzebne jest myślenie kreatywne, oparte na rozmaitych skojarzeniach, w których wykorzystywana jest umiejętność tworzenia mapy myśli, wyobraźni, czyli tzw. edukacja z wyobraźnią. Taką edukację we Wrocławskiej Szkole Przyszłości wspomagają metafory, odgrywające tam prymarną rolę.
In this article I am looking for an answer to the question: What are the meanings and significances of metaphors in the Wrocław School of the Future? I show the use of metaphorical language in the school, where metaphors are treated as a source of knowledge about the surrounding world, as a kind of support for more effective communication and as a stimulator of the imagination. In the Wrocław School of the Future, it is believed that a child does not have to be doomed to education based on stereotypical behaviors. It is also believed that in the process of education there is a need for creative thinking, based on various associations in which the ability to create a mind map, imagination, or so-called imaginative education is used. Such education at the Wrocław School of the Future is supported by metaphors that play a primary role there.

Rodzące się nowożytne nauki społeczne stoczyły na przestrzeni wieku XIX bitwę z autorytetami religijnymi analogiczną do tej, jaką o swą legitymizację musiały stoczyć nauki przyrodnicze dwieście lat wcześniej. Walka ta zakończyła się zwycięstwem, ale nauki społeczne nie były w stanie całkowicie odciąć się od pojęć, metod i języka, jakim posługiwała się teologia, do analizy tego samego obszaru problemów. Rozwój socjologii jako dyscypliny akademickiej wiązał się z delegitymizacją teologii jako nauki społecznej. Niniejszy artykuł podkreśla konkurencyjny charakter „wyobraźni socjologicznej” wobec „wyobraźni religijnej” oraz analizuje konsekwencje „postmodernistycznego zwrotu” w naukach społecznych, który prowadzi ku nowej konceptualizacji relacji między socjologią a teologią.
In this paper I claim that basic premises and concepts of sociology are secularised versions of theological concepts, while the personal biographies of the early sociologists determined their attitude to religion and fostered the quasi-religious ambitions of the new discipline. Sociological imagination, as envisioned by C. W. Mills, was specifically supposed to replace religious imagination in explaining human fears, suffering and longings. However, the recent postmodern turn in humanities opened up a possibility of a post-secular sociology: one that is conscious of its own limits, mindful of ideological premises inherent in much of sociological research, and ready to appreciate the “sociological” insights present in other systems of knowledge, such as religion.

The aim of the paper is to present the problem of transmitting cultural-determined personal names in literatury translation. The study focuses on various groups of such lexems: personal names, which were created onthe base of the model: name + patronimicum + surname; diminutive names; meaning names; folkand historical names and personal names of intertextual relationships. The emphasis is put on imagination of the translator and creative individual approach to each lexical element and its function in the text. The very important thing is the perspective of recipients with a different cultural background.

If the most minimalist definition one can give to the words « art work » is « the way an imagination expresses itself », this definition was, in the second half of the 19th century, the reason why art. critics and theorists argued about the status of photography : purely objective document or potential art work. But writers and literary theorists also took part in this debate, since photography was used to illustrate novels. This article confronts the « literary imagination » and the « photographic imagination », and tries to understand the points of convergence and the points of divergence between these two kinds of imagination, through the contradictory points of view of historians, philosophers and theorists of visual arts and literature.
Si l’on peut définir, de la manière la plus générale, une oeuvre d’art comme ‘expression d’un imaginaire, cette définition posa le problème du statut de la photographie lors de son apparition : document purement objectif ou potentielle forme artistique. Écrivains et critiques littéraires prirent part à ce débat, d’autant plus que des photos furent utilisées pour illustrer des livres, notamment des romans, à partir des années 1880. Cet article tente de confronter « l’imaginaire littéraire » à « l’imaginaire photographique » à travers des points de vues d’écrivains, critiques, philosophes et médiologues, afin de tenter de mieux comprendre leurs points de convergence et de divergence.
