Internal rules of grammar exist in the language irrespective of how they are described by the linguists. This paper is an attempt to answer the question in what way internal rules develop both in the mother tongue and in instructed second language acquisition. The author refers to the hierarchy of processing procedures, chunk related and cognitively based research and demonstrates how this development may be supported in instructed second language acquisition.

The principal objective of the present article has been to explore if incorporating contextualization activities into teaching unfamiliar words in teaching English as a foreign language is conducive to students’ vocabulary expansion and refining their word knowledge. The paper aims to supply an insightful analysis of the action research study undertaken by the present writer as well as a report on its findings. The major goal of the study was to examine the value of context-based instruction as well as activities employed for the purpose of the students’ vocabulary development. The results obtained from the research revealed that the contextualization is not only a beneficial tool for enhancing the students’ vocabulary growth and consolidation, but a relevant motivating factor as well.

The aim of this paper was to verify if the goodwill (positive or negative) disclosed after a merger or acquisition is sensitive to manipulating the financial result in the acquiring company. Manipulating the result referred to the extent of cost allocation in short-term prepayments. Later we examined if the operational result achieved by the acquiring company (profit or loss) has an impact upon the revealed goodwill. The verification of the research hypotheses was performed with the use of statistical tools (linear regression analysis, nonlinear regression function test, normality of residual distribution test). As a result of the research, no significant relation between allocating costs and the disclosed negative goodwill was found, only in the case of positive goodwill its value was related to the allocating in assets costs. Neither positive nor negative goodwill was related to the operating results of the acquiring companies in one year preceding the merger or acquisition.

This case study investigates the effectiveness of the application of the blended approach to teaching a foreign language. The approach can be defined as a combination of a face-to-face classroom component with online instruction (Graham 2003). In the present study the element that was blended within the face-to-face component was asynchronous computer mediated communication in the form of e-mail exchanges between a native speaker of English and a Polish learner of English. The effectiveness of the approach was measured in terms of expanding vocabulary knowledge. The findings revealed that e-mail correspondence treated as an integral part of a language course helped the student to expand her vocabulary, eliminate the majority of spelling mistakes and influenced the complexity of her writing.

The Acquisition of Polish GrammarEvery human language has its grammar. The grammar allows the information involved in speech acts to take on an appropriate form and assures the coherence of statements. Acquisition of grammar rules begins early in a child’s life. In the beginning a child listens to adults and codes the features of language. Some months later a child starts to speak by using the simplest syntactic units (holophrasis). When the syntactic units became more complex, a child starts to use multiword utterances and words as units containing morphemes. A child’s grammar grows richer and more complicated as the child grows older. It is difficult to precisely describe the acquisition after the third year of life. Empirical research conducted over the past few decades suggests that the age at which an individual is first exposed to a second language affects long-term outcomes, in particular for phonology. The question that has occupied scholars of various bents is what, exactly, underlies the robust age effects observed. Does age imply immutable changes in one’s ability to ever sound native-like? Are these changes neurological, cognitive, or socio-psychological in nature? What role do L2 use and contact play? Do age-related influences apply to all individuals, or can language learners actually chart their own course when it comes to accent? This paper will outline basic assumptions of the critical period for phonology while suggesting a different approach to the age question that highlights the individual’s role in both process and outcome. Constructs such as L2 experience, motivation, self-concept, learning approach, and willingness to communicate are discussed in depth in order to show the fundamental connection between cognition and affect so critical for late phonological learning. A re-orientation of the age research is suggested as a result, to prioritize contextual understandings of language use and learner agency.

Several methods of acquisition have been developed so far which aim at accelerating the acquisition process and detection of weak GPS signals. In many of these the search is parallelized in code or frequency space. However, sometimes the number of samples in code periods based on sampling frequency is not equal to required number of Radix-2 FFT algorithm. So it is again computing the DFT normal method without FFT. The main purpose and objective of this project is to implement a fast and robust for weak signal acquisition algorithm “Double Block Zero Padding Acquisition” (DBZP) for GPS L1 civilian signal. Technique is developed even for the signals where number of samples in the code period taken for correlation is not satisfying the required number for Radix-2 algorithm. It is also suitable for weak GPS signals acquisition, which require Pre-detection, or integration (correlation) Time (PIT) to be long.

W artykule omówiono specyfikę akwizycji języka w wieku seniorskim, przedstawiono dane statystyczne dotyczące kompetencji językowych osób po 65. roku życia w oparciu o wyniki badań ogólnopolskich, zaprezentowano typologię form kształcenia językowego osób starszych oraz scharakteryzowano pracę z seniorami z perspektywy glottodydaktycznej na podstawie doświadczeń z uczestnikami kursu włoskiego na Uniwersytecie Trzeciego Wieku w Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego w Warszawie.
The paper examines language education of senior learners, whose enrolment in language courses – considering the phenomenon of population aging – is becoming more and more noticeable. A well-organized process of lifelong learning, including also language education, enables senior citizens to fully and actively participate in the rapidly changing social life. The aim of the paper is to describe language acquisition in this age group; to present statistical data about Polish learners over 65 and a typology of educational forms addressed to seniors; and, last but not least, to analyze the glottodidactic process based on participants of the Italian course at the University of the Third Age at the Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw.

This paper investigates Arab EFL learners' acquisition of modal verbs. The study used a questionnaire, which comprises two versions, testing students' mastery of modals at the levels of both recognition and production. The questionnaire was distributed to 50 English major university students who had studied English for 12-14 years and who had scored 500 or more on the TOEFL. The findings of the study show that the overall performance of the subjects in the study was quite low. The study established a hierarchy of difficulty and identified the major causes of difficulty in the use of modals.

The paper discusses several methodological problems in the necessary (mostly metaphorical) transfer of concepts from one discipline (or subdiscipline) into another one, especially when interdisciplinary research demands mutual understanding in terms of translation and correspondence of concepts. After differentiating between multidisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity, the first is rejected and it is pleaded that the second and third should be combined. Several adequate and inadequate transfers of concepts into linguistics are dealt with, especially in the areas of morphology and language acquisition. Successful transfer is characterised by the formal transfer of new terms and their easy adaptation to already existing linguistic conceptions, especially between subdisciplines. Most often, further important differentiations of a concept cannot be transferred from the original discipline but must be added as enrichments within linguistics itself. This may lead to a split-up of concepts in different subdisciplines of linguistics. The concepts discussed are regression, self-organization, complexity, transparency vs. opacity, figure and ground, top-down processing, default, input, grammaticalisation.

This paper focuses on the effect of prominence level and stress distribution on timing in read English speech of Polish learners. We have measured and analysed the length of IP units distinguished by the traditional British School prosodic description, i.e. preheads, heads and nuclei, as well as stress feet, further divided into stressed and unstressed syllables.A comparison of native and Polish learners' performance shows similar durations of stressed and pitch accented syllables. The unstressed syllables and syllable clusters, on the other hand, are significantly longer in non-native speech, and the discrepancies increase at lower phrasal prominence levels, especially in the preheads. Similar results for both groups have been obtained with respect to the number of consecutive unstressed syllables (foot complexity). The same test repeated after seven months of pronunciation training reveals a considerable tendency towards native speech timing, although the differences concerning low prominence levels remain significant.

We all learn best when we are in a state of rational and emotional balance, or what is referred to as ‘flow’. We know that body and mind are linked physically, cognitively and emotionally and teachers need to recognise and support the integrated development of all the three areas within their teaching and to seek safe and positive ways of doing so. The emotional environment improves students’ self-awareness, motivation, empathy, recognition of choices and leads to strong and supportive communities. Drama provides a supportive forum for checking out that impact in a distanced way, with the teacher there to mediate the experience, often from within a role. Drama offers a stimulating and rich opportunity to discuss and understand our own emotions, attitudes and beliefs through observing, empathising with, feeling and exploring the emotions of characters both portrayed and interacted with in a role. Drama provides a safe emotional context and a sense of security for learners. In the various fields of research into the factors influencing success in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), trends accentuating the importance of recognising the indicators of success based upon personality and psychology have been ascribed great significance. In the paper, the results of a pilot study to an ongoing research project will be presented. The main aim of the project is to establish the influence of drama on the creation of a positive educational environment, taking into consideration such variable factors as: feeling of security, feeling of identity, sense of belonging, sense of purpose, feeling of competence, and through this an improvement in language competence. The research is a theoretical-empirical investigation of a diagnostic-explanatory-verifi catory nature. Results will be presented from the perspective of both quantitative and qualitative analysis.

The subject of the study is a series of advertisements – requests from the Siepomaga.pl website in terms of the method of acquisition of recipients (using Cicero’s captatio benevolentiae principles), convincing and persuading to act through proper selection of rhetorical arguments. The main procedure is to create statements taking into account the common auditorium, bearing the hallmarks of ordinariness. Language structures, toposes, arguments explicitly referring to pathos; the most typical strategies are modesty and raising the value of recipients as a last resort; and toposes: unequal fight against disease, time passing relentlessly as well as causative reasons (support is only a means to obtain priceless values: health and life). A characteristic feature of the requests posted on the Siepomaga.pl website is the presence of various semiotic codes typical for the Internet space, a kind of multimodality of communication in which verbal communication and image coexist. In addition, interaction is an important persuasive element, giving the recipients – the donors – an immediate effect of reward for taking action in the form of satisfaction with the real contribution visible in the account balance bar.

Nowadays, we witness changing trends in terms of the interest in language learning. In Poland, more and more higher education establishments, not only public, but also private, introduce various types of majors concerning oriental languages, such as Chinese translation programmes.The aim of this paper is to compare the Chinese learning process in China and in Poland. In the first part, a comparative outline of both types of learning processes will be introduced, on the base of author’s few years of experience gained while teaching and studying in both of those countries. Furthermore, the author will investigate the results of teaching Chinese in Poland, a place of very few Chinese native speakers, as compared to teaching Chinese in the mainland of China. In the end, the proposals on what to do to improve the Chinese learning system in non-Chinese speaking countries will be introduced.

The purpose of the study has been an analysis of Polish students’ cued translation of Polish (L1) and English or French (L2) sentences into Portuguese (third or additional language in De Angelis’s (2007) terminology). In particular, the study investigates cross-linguistic interaction (Herdina and Jessner’s (2002) term) in multilingual processing involved in L3 production. In fact, translation constitutes a special case of production because, on the one hand, the content is already contained in the L1 or L2 source sentences, but at the same time, this is not necessarily a facilitation, as the cues may require the use of words or structures the participants might not use in free production.The article is based on two studies carried out with thirty and forty-two students of Portuguese philology respectively. As the results show, cross-linguistic interaction in various directions was observed, not only from L2 (English or French), L3 (in those participants for whom Portuguese was an L4 and their L3 was Spanish or Italian), L4, etc. or, intralingually, from Portuguese, but also from L1, despite the distance between Polish and Portuguese and the special status of the native language. However, the amount of interference and/or negative transfer often depended on the sentence rather than on the language combination. The diversity of the observed interactions also supports Herdina and Jessner’s (2002) claim of the dynamic and unpredictable nature of cross-linguistic interaction.

APEX (Airborne Prism EXperiment) is a high spectral and spatial resolution hyperspectral sensor developed by a Swiss-Belgian consortium on behalf of the European Space Agency. Since the acceptance of the instrument in 2010, it has been operated jointly by the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO, Mol, Belgium) and the Remote Sensing Laboratories (RSL, Zurich, Switzerland). During this period, several flight campaigns have been performed across Europe, gathering over 4 Terabytes of raw data. Following radiometric, geometric and atmospheric processing, this data has been provided to a multitude of Belgian and European researchers, institutes and agencies, including the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Facility for Airborne Research (EUFAR) and the Belgian Science Policy Office (BelSPO). The applications of APEX data span a wide range of research topics, e.g. landcover mapping (mountainous, coastal, countryside and urban regions), the assessment of important structural and (bio)physical characteristics of vegetative and non-vegetative species, the tracing of atmospheric gases, and water content analysis (chlorophyll, suspended matter). Recurrent instrument calibration, accurate flight planning and preparation, and experienced pilots and instrument operators are crucial to successful data acquisition campaigns. In this paper, we highlight in detail these practical aspects of a typical APEX data acquisition campaign.

In this paper, we analyze the acquisition and tracking performance of signal using a tiered differential polyphase code as the secondary code. The Zadoff-Chu sequence is known to have a CAZAC (Constant Amplitude Zero Auto-Correlation) characteristics. The secondary code generated by differential encoding of the Zadoff-Chu sequence also has the same characteristics as the Zadoff-Chu sequence. Therefore, long integration will give better correlation results. We compare signal acquisition and tracking performance when using the NH sequence and Zadoff-Chu sequence as the secondary code. Monte-carlo simulation is performed using MATLAB. We use the probability of detection and the mean acquisition time for signal acquisition performance and tracking jitter for signal tracking performance.

The cold start of the space GPS receiver, i.e. the start without any information about the receiver position, satellite constellation, and time, is complicated by a large Doppler shift of a navigation signal caused by the satellite movement on the Earth orbit. That increases about five times the search space of the navigation signals compared to the standard GPS receiver. The paper investigates a method of the acceleration of the GPS receiver cold start time designed for the pico- and femto-satellites. The proposed method is based on a combination of the paralel search in Doppler frequency and PRN codes and the serial search in code phase delay. It can shorten the cold start time of the GPS receiver operating on LEO orbit from about 300 to 60 seconds while keeping the simplicity of FPGA signal processor and low power consumption. The developed algorithm was successfully implemented and tested in the piNAV GPS receiver. The Energy required for the obtaining of the position fix was reduced five times from 36 on to 7.7 Joules. This improvement enables applications of such receiver for the position determination in smaller satellites like Pocket Cube or femto-satellites with a lower energy budget than the Cube Satellite.

Understanding metaphors with vehicles from the animal domain – a developmental perspective The aim of the presented empirical study was to explore the development of metaphor understanding in children. The results of the study were to reveal the way the mind organises information belonging to different fields of knowledge. The study followed a quasi-experimental design. The subjects were 77 children from three age groups: 5;6–6;0, 8;0–8;6, 9;6–10;0. The dependent variable was the level of comprehension of metaphors with vehicles from the animal domain, but connoting human attributes. The variable was measured through individual Piagetian interviews. The study proper was preceded by a pilot study on 24 adults. The data collected were analysed with the help of raters. The study confirmed the hypothesis that the ability to activate metaphorical thinking increases with age, however the increase is not linear. Older children assigned more human dispositional traits, thoughts and preferences to the objects of metaphors. Younger ones often focused on the physical features of animals. With age, the tendency to give positive evaluations to the objects of metaphors increases, while the number of digressions decreases. The development of the understanding of conventional metaphors may take a different course than the development of the understanding of creative ones. The most distinct changes in the ability of understanding metaphors concerning humans appear at the age of eight.

According to the critical period hypothesis, the earlier the acquisition of a second language starts, the better. Owing to the plasticity of the brain, up until a certain age a second language can be acquired successfully according to this view. Early second language learners are commonly said to have an advantage over later ones especially in phonetic/phonological acquisition. Native-like pronunciation is said to be most likely to be achieved by young learners. However, there is evidence of accentfree speech in second languages learnt after puberty as well. Occasionally, on the other hand, a nonnative accent may appear even in early second (or third) language acquisition. Cross-linguistic influences are natural in multilingual development, and we would expect the dominant language to have an impact on the weaker one(s). The dominant language is usually the one that provides the largest amount of input for the child. But is it always the amount that counts? Perhaps sometimes other factors, such as emotions, ome into play? In this paper, data obtained from an EnglishPersian-Hungarian trilingual pair of siblings (under age 4 and 3 respectively) is analyzed, with a special focus on cross-linguistic influences at the phonetic/phonological levels. It will be shown that beyond the amount of input there are more important factors that trigger interference in multilingual development.

The dynamic development of teaching Polish as a foreign language, together with the official certification of this language knowledge, leads to the necessity in examination of communication needs and language preferences of young Ukrainians. In the article, we highlighted the usefulness of the Polish language among Polish philology students and language courses in north-western Ukraine. The study involved students of two universities, namely the Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University  and the National University of Ostroh Academy. An analysis of the motivational factors for learning Polish among the respondents from Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University and the National University of Ostroh Academy shows that young people understand the importance and significance of foreign languages, including Slavic ones, in the modern world.
Dynamiczny rozwój nauczania języka polskiego jako obcego wraz z urzędowym poświadczaniem znajomości tego języka powoduje konieczność badań potrzeb komunikacyjnych i preferencji językowych młodych Ukraińców. W artykule zwróciliśmy uwagę na przydatność języka polskiego wśród studentów filologii polskiej i lektoratów językowych w północno-zachodniej Ukrainie. W badaniu wzięli udział studenci dwóch uczelni, mianowicie Wołyńskiego Uniwersytetu Narodowego im. Łesi Ukrainki oraz Uniwersytetu Narodowego „Akademia Ostrogska”. Analiza czynników motywujących do nauki języka polskiego wśród respondentów z Wołyńskiego Uniwersytetu Narodowego im. Łesi Ukrainki oraz Uniwersytetu Narodowego „Akademia Ostrogska” pokazuje, że młodzi ludzie rozumieją wagę i znaczenie języków obcych, w tym słowiańskich, we współczesnym świecie.

This article concerns selected changes, that have arisen for civil ways to purchase property from the introduction in 2015 – by amending the law on the protection of monuments and care of monuments – a new institution in the form of a national register of lost cultural property. At the same time by introducing changes to the Polish Civil Code there have been introduced the relationships between entering thing in such a register and some regulated by the Polish Civil Code ways to acquire ownership of movable property, generally excluding the possibility of acquiring ownership of things entered into this register. The article analyzes these issues against the background of art. 169 and 174 of the Polish Civil Code (this is in the context of the acquisition of movable from an unauthorized person, and by prescription), and considers the civil effects of deleting things from the aforementioned register, depending on the cause of this deletion.

Existing studies on plural acquisition in German have relied on small samples and thus hardly deliver generalizable and differentiated results. Here, overgeneralizations of certain plural allomorphs and other tendencies in the acquisition of German plural markers are described on the basis of test data from 7,394 3- to 5-yearold monolingual German and bi/multilingual immigrant children tested with a modified, validated version of the Marburger Sprachscreening (MSS) language test and 476 children tested with the SETK 3-5 language test. Classified correct and wrong answers to MSS and SETK 3-5 plural items were compared. The acquisition patterns of immigrants corresponded to those of younger German children. Both monolingual German and immigrant children demonstrated generally the same universal frequency and phonetically/phonologically based error patterns, irrespective of their linguistic background, but with different tendencies such as overgeneralization of -s by German children only.

The mining activities induces the growth should be a holistic notion that encompasses the progressive development in the quality of individual’s life in terms of food, clothing and shelter and the environment for a healthy living with rising longevity of life and happiness. In West Bengal the development process reveals the indications and effects of widening inequalities between the “haves‟ and “have-nots‟ and the growing deprivation of the vulnerable and marginalized sectors of the population. There are very small trickle down effects of the economic development associated with this model of growth. But when it is necessary to undertake development projects that engage the displacement of communities, it is indispensable that these projects obtain the legal permission and support of the people who are affected and that in return for giving up their land and homes they receive priority if not exclusive rights to the benefits emanating from these projects. For the proposed work the area of the study is South Bengal which includes one district namely West Burdwan which has the highest concentration of several industries in West Bengal, India. Both descriptive and analytical approach is proposed for the study. As a tool an interview schedule is prepared to collect primary information from the people.

In the definitions, various facets of language feeling are taken up, such as its relation to intuition, reference to mother tongue and foreign language and individual or collective implications.

The development of enterprises in the globalised world depends on their development potential and ability to compete with other entities. Of key importance in the field of competitiveness is access to innovative technologies providing a competitive advantage and the ability to cooperate in their acquisition with other entities, e.g. in clusters. The authors attempted to identify the sources of technology and financing options used by companies in the metal processing industry. The studied entities are part of a cluster of national importance, and the adopted research method is based on an interview questionnaire. Studies have shown that most companies buy ready-made solutions and to a lesser extent cooperate in acquiring technology. Noticeable is also a relatively large share of financing investments in new technologies from public funds.

Non-pathological language attrition has been thoroughly investigated in the context of first as well as second language (for review, see Bardovi-Harlig & Stringer, 2010; Schmid & Mehotcheva, 2012). However, still not enough is known about language attrition in a different population. Foreign language teachers, who often fight an uphill battle trying to prevent their learners’ lack of progress, may also face a different challenge. Namely, their own linguistic skills may regress as well. Therefore, the inquiry should be extended so as to include this population. As a result, in the present study we aim to investigate the extent to which FL teachers are aware of the phenomenon of language attrition. The diagnostic study was motivated by anecdotal evidence and frequent interactions with foreign language teachers. Our observations rested on the assumption that FL teachers may experience stagnation in the language they teach or may even be on the verge of language regression. 21 primary school non-native foreign language teachers (mean age 29) representing both rural and urban areas participated in the study. All participants had a B.A. in elementary education and were pursuing their M.A. in language teaching. In our pilot study, they were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire including both closed-ended and open-ended questions. The preliminary analysis reveals factors contributing to language loss among foreign language teachers and suggests future research directions.

In this study an experiment is presented on how Hungarian children interpret two word orders of recursive PPs (subject-PP-verb and PP-subject-verb order). According to the research of Roeper (2011) and Hollebrandse and Roeper (2014), children tend to give conjunctive interpretation to multiple embedded sentences at the beginning of language acquisition. This interpretation later turns into an adult-like, recursive interpretation. Our aim is to discover (i) whether Hungarian children start with conjunction as well, and whether (ii) the apparently more salient functional head lévő appearing in Hungarian recursive PPs can help them to acquire the correct, recursive interpretation early. We also want to find out whether (iii) the word orders in recursive PPs have an influence on the acquisition of children. In this paper two experiments are presented conducted with 6 and 8-year-olds and adults, in which the participants were asked to choose between two pictures. One of the pictures depicted recursive and the other one depicted conjunctive interpretation of the given sentence. In the first experiment subject-PP-verb order was tested, but in the second one sentences were tested with PP-subject-verb order. We will claim that lévő, which is (arguably) a more salient Hungarian functional element than -i, does not help children to acquire the embedded reading of recursive sentences, because both of them are overt functional heads. However, the two types of word orders affect the acquisition of recursive PPs. PP-subject-verb order is easier to compute because the order of the elements in the sentences and the order of the elements in the pictures matches.

The problem of teaching English to third-age students is among the issues in ELT which have gained increasing attention and interest in recent years. The aim of this paper is to identify difficulties in learning English as a foreign language reported by students taking part in language courses at third-age universities in Poland. The research is based on the questionnaire distributed among the group of 70 third-age students of English. The results show that the problems the learners report are cantered around their age- and health- related conditions, as well as their general attitudes concerning foreign language learning. It is hoped that the present study will constitute a minor contribution to the study of learning needs and expectations of senior students in Poland.

Abstract: Selective mutism is more common than initially thought and afflicts immigrant language minority children at approximately three times the rate of monolinguals (Toppelberg, Tabors, Coggins, Lum, & Burgers, 2005). Children who have developmental language and/or articulation problems and children who are quiet due to anxiety or concerns about accents and limited fluency can suffer from selective mutism. This case study examines the efficacy of interdisciplinary treatment with three positive psychology interventions to treat an eight-year-old Spanish-English bilingual child with selective mutism.  Pet-assistance therapy, music therapy, and laughter therapy were incorporated into the child’s speech-language therapy sessions to increase verbal productions across 14 weeks.  Results indicated that pet-assisted therapy revealed positive outcomes, with modest gains for music and laughter.  Implications of outcomes, collaboration, and conclusions are discussed.

It follows on directly from my earlier analysis of the 1982 data, and attempts to broaden the base line on which the later research developed. The paper presents a brief bibliometric analysis of L2 vocabulary research published in 1983. The analysis identifies a number of research clusters that were not present in the 1982 research but will become significant in later years, and highlights the volatility of vocabulary research at this time.

This paper is the fourth instalment in a series of studies which attempt to plot the way research in L2 vocabulary acquisition has developed over the last fifty years. Earlier papers have analysed the research for 1982, 1983 and 2006 (Meara 2012, 2014, 2015). This paper follows on directly from my analysis of the 1983 research, and it uses the same bibliometric techniques that were used in the earlier papers: the co-citation methodology, first developed by Small (1973) and White and Griffith (1981). The analysis of the 1984 data shows some consolidation of the main research themes, but for the most part the L2 vocabulary research published in this year continues to be made up of small research clusters, sharing few common points of reference.

This paper uses a co-citation analysis to examine the research on L2 vocabulary acquisition that was published in 1987. This year is surprisingly volatile compared with the previous year, 1986, with a very large number of new sources appearing in the maps, and many sources identified in previous years losing their influence in the research papers that make up the 1987 data set. The paper also reports a larger analysis of all the work that appeared in a five year window from 1983–1987. This larger data set is not quite as volatile as the smaller 1987 data set, but it suggests that some sources who dominated the co-citation maps in earlier years are losing their influence.

The present study reports results from a series of computer experiments seeking to combine word-based Largest Chunk (LCh) segmentation and Agreement Groups (AG) sequence processing. The AG model is based on groups of similar utterances that enable combinatorial mapping of novel utterances. LCh segmentation is concerned with cognitive text segmentation, i.e. with detecting word boundaries in a sequence of linguistic symbols. Our observations are based on the text of Le petit prince (The little prince) by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in three languages: French, English, and Hungarian. The data suggest that word-based LCh segmentation is not very efficient with respect to utterance boundaries, however, it can provide useful word combinations for AG processing. Typological differences between the languages are also reflected in the results.

The need to create software for measuring data acquisition to ensure data collection during calibration of the multimeter and to verify its accuracy was justified. The prototype of such software working with the M-4650CR multimeter was developed in the VBA MS Excel environment. This software, called "CAL-DAQ", is a modular structure that enables the execution of individual modules in order to facilitate the measurement procedure. Software of this kind can be useful in industrial measurement management systems which are an important part of quality management systems.

Opis:
A Context Search algorithm used for lexical knowledge acquisition is presented. Knowledge representation based on psycholinguistic theories of cognitive processes allows for implementation of a computational model of semantic memory in the form of semantic network. Knowledge acquisition using supervised dialog templates have been performed in a word game designed to guess the concept a human user is thinking about. The game that has been implemented on a web server, demonstrates elementary linguistic competencies based on lexical knowledge stored in semantic memory, enabling at the same time acquisition and validation of knowledge. Possible applications of the algorithm in domains of medical diagnosis and information retrieval are sketched.

W ciągu ostatnich kilku lat nastąpił skokowy wzrost liczby aplikacji stosujących mikrokontrolery i mikroprocesory w układach pomiarowych. Ten wzrost dotyczy także zastosowań procesorów sygnałowych, pozwalających na wstępne przetwarzanie rejestrowanych danych w czasie rzeczywistym. Możliwość wstępnego przetwarzania istotnie ogranicza liczbę przechowywanych lub przesyłanych do nadrzędnego komputera parametrów w stosunku do liczby rejestrowanych próbek sygnałów. W pracy przedstawiono dwa przykładowe zastosowania procesorów sygnałowych dokonującego procesu wstępnego przetwarzania rejestrowanych próbek oraz w układzie realizującym funkcje woltomierza fazoczułego (ang. lock-in amplifier). W pierwszym przypadku przestawiono koncepcję urządzenia pozwalającego na kondycjonowanie, próbkowanie sygnałów ze wstępnym przetwarzaniem jak i rejestrację w pamięci wewnętrznej układu lub w dołączonej karcie pamięci. System został wyposażony w kilka standardowych interfejsów (USB, I2C i CAN), które pozwalają na dołączenie zewnętrznych sensorów lub nadrzędnego komputera. W drugim przykładzie wykorzystano zestaw uruchomieniowy z procesorem sygnałowym TMS320C6713 oraz zewnętrzny układ z przetwornikiem A/C. Oprogramowanie procesora realizuje generację fali sinusoidalnej oraz jej przesunięcia w fazie, funkcje mnożnika i filtracji dolnoprzepustowej - funkcje niezbędne do pracy woltomierza fazoczułego.
There is a strong growth in the number of microcontrollers and processors applications for measurement systems. This growth concerns the applications of digital signal processors as well. These processors can preprocess the sampled data before saving that limits amount of the stored data to the estimated parameters only. Two applications of digital signal processors are presented in detail: multi-channel recorder with preprocessing and lock-in amplifier. The recorder can amplify the sampled signals and saves in flash memory or memory card. This system was fitted with various standard interface (USB, I2C and CAN), that enables attachment of various sensors and a superior processor. The latter application (lock-in amplifier) uses digital signal processor TMS320C6713 and extemal A/D converter. The control program generates harmonic signal, performs multiplication and low-pass filtering to achieve lock-in amplifier functionality.

Balanced Teaching zakłada ich współistnienie oraz proponuje zachowanie równowagi pomiędzy nimi w nauczaniu języka obcego.
The article is devoted to the diversification of foreign language teaching methods. The Balanced Teaching approach accurately represents this approach since it rejects competition between the foreign language teaching methods which focus either on hermeticism or on openness. Balanced Teaching assumes their coexistence and suggests their remaining in balance in foreign language teaching.

W artykule opisano możliwości zastosowania pakietów programowych Dasylab i LabView w nauczaniu przedmiotów technicznych. Opisano zjawisko akwizycji sygnałów oraz przedstawiono środowisko programowe Dasylab i Labview. Przykładowe aplikacje stworzone przy użyciu opisanych pakietów programowych zostały zaprezentowane w drugiej części artykułu.
This paper describes applicability of software packages Dasylab and LabView for teaching technical subjects. These packages allow generation of the simulated signals from sensors and follow their processing and conditioning for further processing. Described the phenomenon of signal acquisition and presents a programming environment DasyLab and LabView. Sample appli-cations design edusing these software packages are presented in the second part of article.

W 2015 r. Sejm uchwalił ustawę o kontroli niektórych inwestycji, która wprowadza specjalny reżim dotyczący nabywania akcji, udziałów, przedsiębiorstwa lub zorganizowanej części przedsiębiorstwa spółek wpisanych jako podmioty podlegające ochronie. Głównym celem regulacji jest wprowadzenie administracyjnoprawnych mechanizmów chroniących spółki o strategicznym znaczeniu dla bezpieczeństwa państwa przed próbami przejęcia przez zagraniczne podmioty. W obecnym kształcie ustawa jest nieprecyzyjna oraz zapewnia właściwym organom bardzo szeroki luz interpretacyjny, tworząc instrumenty, które pozwalają w praktyce na uniemożliwienie dokonania wszelkich transakcji skutkujących osiągnięciem istotnego uczestnictwa lub dominacji w podmiocie podlegającym ochronie. Artykuł zawiera analizę najważniejszych instrumentów uregulowanych ustawą, takich jak zawiadomienie uprzednie i następcze, oraz wskazuje najważniejsze problemy interpretacyjne związane z regulacją. W szczególności omówione zostały kwestie stosowania przepisów dotyczących milczącego załatwiania sprawy do postępowań regulowanych ustawą o kontroli niektórych inwestycji, kwestia charakteru prawnego decyzji administracyjnych wprowadzonych ustawą, kwestia możliwości wydania decyzji aprobującej nabycie istotnego uczestnictwa lub dominacji w podmiocie podlegającym ochronie oraz wybrane zagadnienia związane z zawiadomieniem uprzednim i następczym.
In 2015 the Polish Parliament enacted the Control of Certain Investment Act, which introduces a special legal regime regulating acquisition of shares, enterprise or organized part of an enterprise of companies entered on the list of the protected companies. The main goal of this regulation is to introduce administrative law mechanisms which protect companies of a strategic importance to the national safety against hostile takeovers conducted by foreign entities. However, the Act in the current state is imprecise and gives to the minister competent in the matters of energy a very broad level of interpretation margin through instruments which in practice allow to oppose any transaction resulting in acquisition of a material interest or a dominant position in companies protected under the Act. The article analyses the most important instruments regulated under the Act, such as ex ante and ex post notification and indicates the most material interpretational issues occurring under this regulation. In particular an application on regulations on a tacit approval of a case to proceedings regulated under the Act, the legal nature of the administrative decision under the Act, the possibility to issue a decision accepting the acquisition of a material interest or a dominant position in the protected company, as well as selected issues regarding the ex ante and ex post notifications have been discussed.

Inclusion of technology in the process of second language acquisition has always been a priority for both teachers and theoreticians. This paper reviews the current trends in using video-based language instruction in K-12 educational settings. Although it has been demonstrated for many years that the use of video as an instructional medium provides unique learning qualities, it has not been entirely embraced by high school English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers. Furthermore, recent advancements of digital video (low cost equipment and editing software) and Web-based video sharing services provide remarkable possibilities for supporting a variety of learning activities in ESL classrooms. Yet, classroom practice in using video technology has not gone too far beyond simple viewing and listening to video content for eliciting discussion among ESL students. This paper particularly highlights the role of video in the process of improving student pronunciation and presentation skills. The authors described a week-long classroom video-based project conducted at a Midwestern High School. The best examples of classroom practices and student activities were discussed. The most prominent observations of this project were that the video-based ESL activities contributed to the overall learning motivation and the enhancement of pronunciation skills. Finally, the authors discuss some potential issues and instructional implications of utilizing video technology in K-12 settings.

The aim of the article is to present how the immediate surroundings can help children acquire language. It presents the case study of a 12-year-old Chinese girl who, as a consequence of parents’ decision, has lived with a Polish family and has a chance to be totally immersed in Polish. The article shows the dynamic acquisition process, including also a cultural adaptation aspect. It shows that not only school teaching can have a good influence on children’s language development.

Computer forensics is a key science and competency in meeting the growing risks of cybercrime, as well as for criminal investigation generally. In order to provide irrefutable evidence of a potential crime, a specialist in the incident response team (e.g. an IT forensics specialist) must secure the digital evidence in accordance with the correct procedure. There are no strict guidelines on how to do this. It is known that the authenticity and fidelity of data must be preserved. This article will collect good practices developed by specialists in the field of computer forensics. The process of securing the evidence material from a digital data sources for later analysis will be presented.

Do problemu fuzji i akwizycji podchodzi się na ogół od strony ekonomicznej tych przedsięwzięć. Część połączeń jednak nie osiąga sukcesu z powodu nie przystawania struktur organizacyjnych łączonych przedsiębiorstw. Autor próbuje zaproponować ilościowe podejście do problemu traktując strukturę organizacyjną jako funkcję jej wymiarów. Prezentując poszczególne wymiary organizacji, dochodzi do wniosku, że istnieje możliwość sumowania wyników. Opracowana w ten sposób miara może stanowić narzędzie pomocnicze przy podejmowaniu decyzji integracyjnych łączonych jednostek.
The problem of merges & acquisition seems to be approached generally from economic side of those undertakings. However, some of those undertakings are not successful because of differences between their organizational structures. The author tries to suggest a quantitative approach to that problem, treating an organization’s structure as a function of it’s dimensions. While presenting separate dimensions of an organization he comes to the conclusion that there is a possibility to summarize the results. The measure developed in that way may become a supplementary tool while making integral decisions by entities being merged or acquired.

This paper uses a co-citation analysis to examine the research on L2 vocabulary acquisition that was published in 1985. This year seems to mark a kind of transition in the field. Unlike the earlier years analysed in this series of papers, 1985 shows signs of a coherent L2 vocabulary research front developing. The number of papers that qualify for inclusion is much greater than in previous years, and the analysis suggests that recognisable research themes are beginning to be clearly articulated.

This paper uses a co-citation analysis to examine the research on L2 vocabulary acquisition that was published in 1986. This year seems to mark a serious consolidation of L2 vocabulary research, with the main themes of future research appearing. The paper also reports a larger analysis of all the work that appeared in a five-year window from 1982-1986. This analysis clearly shows the beginnings of a recognisable research focus on L2 vocabulary acquisition, though this work is influenced by some surprising sources, who do not figure in more recent work in the field.

This paper presents signal synchronization aspects in a large, distributed, multichannel RPC Muon Trigger system in the CMS experiment. The paper is an introduction to normalized structure analysis methods of such systems. The method introduces a general model of the system, presented in a form of a network of distributed, synchronous, pipeline processes. The model is based on a definition of a synchronous data stream and its formal, fundamental properties. Theoretical considerations are supported by a practical application of synchronous streams and processes management. The following processes were modeled and implemented in hardware: window synchronization, derandomization, data concentration and generation of test pulses. There are presented chosen results of the model application in the CMS experiment.

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between locus of control and achievement in second language learning, when using reading and listening as the measure of success of the learners. The study was conducted on a pilot group of 102 university students, enrolled in a master’s degree course at a university in Poland. The students were asked to complete the Drwal 29-question test of locus of control and a number of reading and listening tests to complete over an extended period of time in order to gain a reliable overview of their levels of achievement. The results, somewhat against the run of expectation, indicated that there was no apparent correlation-either positive or negative-between the orientation of locus of control of the participants and achievement. This goes against the conventional assumption that there should be some form of negative correlation, as previous research indicates that sucessful learners in an academic environment are more likely than not to have an inwardly orientated locus of control.

The article presents the results of the experimental studies conducted so far on the devel- opment of infants’ primary communicative abilities, carried out in vivo. The findings of neurobiologists on the formation of the structures of the social brain not only influ- ence the process of early diagnosis of developmental disorders, but also allow for the construction of principles of early intervention. The article discusses the results of our own study of thirteen infants born in Poland and abroad, conducted by means of par- ticipant observation (online). The aim was to reveal the disturbances in shaping social responses in a lockdown situation and to define a pattern for preventive interventions.

Mergers and acquisitions are one of the most relevant external ways to increase capital and operational potential of a company. They allow for the development of both individual entities and entire sectors and are made with the goal of improving the company's financial performance. There are many different drivers for potential investors to undertake mergers and acquisitions. One of them is synergy. Synergy is understood as a result of two or more processes interacting together to have an effect that is greater than the effect that those processes make individually. Two or more businesses can merge to form one company that is capable of improving revenue or reducing expenses than either could have been able achieve independently. It refers to the additional value created by a transaction. More and more companies decide to evaluate synergies in their M&A financial forecasts, because they can allocate the available resources, increase revenues and reduce costs, or diversify their activities in more effective way. It is a specific factor that motivates businesses. However, it is important to make calculation to examine its economic sense and reduce potential risk of failure in business. This article focuses on the assessment of synergy and its implications in mergers and acquisitions.

W artykule podjęto analizę działań związanych z nabywaniem języka przez dzieci w wielokulturowym przedszkolu. Celem badań była obserwacja zmian w posługiwaniu się polskim słownictwem przez czteroletnie dzieci imigrantów. Skupiono uwagę na sposobie porozumiewania się oraz sytuacjach w przedszkolu, które pozwalają na poszerzanie słownictwa dzieci. Przebadano przyrost liczby słów sześciorga dzieci imigrantów. Dla porównania przeanalizowano słownictwo dzieci polskich. Wykorzystano zestaw 60 obrazków z zeszytu dla nauczyciela „Uczymy czytać w przedszkolu” Haliny Mystkowskiej. W trakcie badania zaobserwowano, że w badaniu początkowym dzieci obcojęzyczne słabo się wypowiadały, często nie podejmowały próby nazywania obrazków. Natomiast w drugiej próbie wykazywały większą pewność siebie, nawet jeśli nie do końca poprawnie udawało się nazwać obrazek. Kluczową konkluzją jest to, że w ramach przeprowadzonych ćwiczeń liczba słów znacznie się zwiększyła.
The article deals with the language acquisition among children in a multicultural kindergarten. The aim of the research was to observe changes in the use of Polish vocabulary by four-year-old immigrant children. Observations focused on the manner of communication as well as kindergarten situations that enabled the children to expand their vocabulary. Word growth of six linguistically diverse immigrant children were examined. The vocabulary of Polish children was studied in order to compare the two groups. A set of 60 images from the booklet for teachers "Uczymy czytać w przedszkolu" [Teaching reading in kindergarten] by Halina Mystkowska was used. It was found during the study that in the initial test the non-native speaking children spoke poorly and often made no attempt to name the images. In contrast, in the second test they showed more confidence, even if they did not quite succeed in naming the images correctly. The paper describes an universal module for video stream acquisition from fast cameras with Camera Link interface. The first version of the referenced standard defines three configurations: Base, Medium and Full. The developed module supports all of them achieving transmission speeds up to 5.44 Gb/s for raw image data in the Full configuration. The module is designed according to FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC) standard and can cooperate with carrier boards containing High-Pin Count (HPC) version of the connector. The module was tested with the TEWS TAMC-641 module.

Control and Data Acquisition System for the micro-CHP unit has been designed as a new approach to the microgeneration system supplied by energy of the Sun. This paper describes only the part of the system which is intended for controlling and measurement data collecting. Owing to the Unit, in a households, radiation absorbed by collectors can be used for heating of water, generation of electricity or obtaining the cold for air-conditioning. This top-down engineering approach are implemented by three independent subsystems. In order to manage whole station Programmable Automation Controller has been mounted. The System equipped in a proper number of flow meters, pressure and temperature sensors and liquid pumps according to an algorithm is able to control the heat distribution, calculate thermal power display these data and actual state of the unit. In addition, using LabVIEW software special programs have been written. These programs make possible to display and control states of the Unit. The entire controlling system is supplied by the 1 kW using PV Panels Subsystem. In case of the sun’s energy is not suficient, the PV system has an ability of over-switching on supply from the power network.

The paper presents data on acquisition of conifer cones from 16 seed extraction plants operating on the territory of Poland during four consecutive years from 2009 to 2012. A high variability was observed in provision of seed units to the seed exaction plants related to specificity of a given seed year. During the four analyzed years the most commonly acquired cone was that of Scots pine – above 1.3 thousand Mg, and the most rare were pines of common fir – 31 Mg. The plants that process the largest number of cones are seed extraction plants in forest districts of Jarocin, Kluczbork and Rytel where over 600 Mg of cones were extracted. Conifer cones, which are usually treated as waste, may be utilized as an energy source. After seed extraction their mass decreases from 16 to 30% depending on the species. The analysis showed that the annual quantity of conifer cones that can be used as an energy source is on average 270 Mg of empty cones.
W artykule przedstawiono dane liczbowe dotyczące pozyskania szyszek czterech gatunków drzew: sosny zwyczajnej, świerka pospolitego, modrzewia europejskiego i jodły zwyczajnej, z 16 wyłuszczarni pracujących na terenie Polski w ciągu lat 2009-2012. Otwarte szyszki pozbawione nasion i traktowane jako odpad połuszczarski mogą być wykorzystane na cele energetyczne w lokalnych elektrowniach. Aby w tym celu można było je wykorzystać, należy na początek sprawdzić, ile rocznie pozyskuje się tego materiału. Zauważono dużą zmienność w dostarczaniu jednostek nasiennych do wyłuszczarni związaną z latami nasiennymi. Przez cztery analizowane lata najwięcej pozyskano szyszek sosny zwyczajnej ponad 1,3 tys. Mg, a najmniej jodły pospolitej - 31 Mg. Ze względu na stosunkowo małą masę pojedynczych szyszek i dużą objętość szyszki można transportować na niewielkie odległości. Do wyłuszczarni łuszczących najwięcej szyszek należą obiekty w Nadleśnictwach Jarocin, Kluczborki i Rytel, gdzie dostarczano łącznie 600 Mg szyszek rocznie. Po łuszczeniu szyszki zmniejszają swoją masę w zależności od gatunku od 16 do 30%. Analiza wykazała, że rocznie można wykorzystać na cele energetyczne średnio 270 Mg pustych szyszek. Szyszki traktowane jako odpad mogą być bezpośrednio spalane lub wykorzystane jako dodatek w produkcji brykietów i peletów.

The processability account anticipates that learners will make more underpassivization errors than overpassivization errors since passivization entails more processing. Although one study on psych-verbs and a few on unaccusatives examined Turkish L2 learners’ acquisition, no research compared a single set of learners’ acquisitions of these verbs together from a processing point of view. In this regard, the current study aims to investigate whether the processing complexity of passivization influences acquisition of psych and unaccusative verbs. It also questions whether general accuracy levels in Grammaticality Judgement Task (GJT) and degree of familiarity with target verbs are related to their level of accuracy with individual psych and unaccusative verbs. 33 undergraduate-level university students performed on the GJT and a Word Familiarity Rating Task (WFRT). The GJT included 38 items with 12 sentences for psych-verbs, 12 sentences for unaccusative-verbs, 12 sentences for distracters and 2 sentences for examples. The WFRT was a survey questioning familiarity with 6 psych and 6 unaccusative verbs. To analyse the data, a set of nonparametric tests and descriptive statistics were used. Tekst opiera się na danych empirycznych; chodzi tu o opis afisza i porównanie powstałych w ten sposób wypowiedzi autorstwa native speakers języków francuskiego i włoskiego, frankofonów uczących się języka włoskiego oraz italofonów uczących się francuskiego; w przypadku lokutorów nienatywnych mamy do czynienia z uczniami bardzo zaawansowanymi, czyli tzw. quasi-dwujęzycznymi. Autorzy dokonują przeglądu wcześniejszych prac dotyczących akwizycji partykuł zasięgu, które ukazują jasno, iż akwizycja owych partykuł związana jest z rozwojem morfologii i składni w lektach uczących się. Wspominane w artykule prace analizują więc użycie partykuł zasięgu zasadniczo na poziomie zdania, podczas gdy tekst Watorek, Dimroth i Perdue wychodzi poza jednostkę zdaniową, by zbadać funkcjonowanie partykuł na poziomie dyskursu. Szczegółowa analiza przykładów użycia partykuł zasięgu przez lokutorów natywnych oraz przez rodzimych użytkowników danego języka prowadzi autorów do konkluzji, iż w zasadzie każde zjawisko językowe powinno być analizowane na poziomie całostek ponadzdaniowych. Na podstawie tego typu analizy stwierdzić można np., iż o ile uczniowie będący na poziomie bardzo zaawansowanym nie mają kłopotów na poziomie budowy zdań w języku docelowym, tym niemniej wykazują jeszcze pewną słabość, jeśli chodzi o poprawne formowanie całostek ponadzdaniowych.

This paper is aimed at the description of hardware design, software equipment and the functionality of the second evolution of the intelligent multipurpose input/output microcontroller converter and control unit designed and assembled by the authors. Preceding stages of the unit development are concisely overviewed first, the deficiencies of which give rise to the primary motivation of this contribution. Then separate hardware parts of the novel unit are described in detail including electronic schematic diagrams. The device firmware and software capabilities are introduced as well. The advantages of the unit are highlighted compared to older versions. Its functionality, performance and efficiency are then verified by a laboratory control-related dynamic responses measurement example. In the contrary to previous evolutions, a more compact hardware design, increased A/D and D/A converter resolutions, added USB communication capability, better and more accurate analog circuits with more advanced operation amplifiers, the use of OLED instead of LCD display, the pulse-width modulated signal generated by the microcontroller unit itself can be considered among the most important improvements. Moreover, the direct use of the serial link may reduce noise significantly and makes the device more universal.

The knowledge acquisition model proposed in this paper is designed to assist with the acquisition of knowledge in a company possessing its own maintenance department. The model is built on the basis of knowledge bases. The authors focus on basic information required for maintenance department operation and expert archiving of technical documentation. Three main areas are covered by the model: knowledge acquisition and formalization, knowledge systematization and knowledge retrieval by problem or field. It is assumed that the implementation of the model coupled with an electronic knowledge acquisition report and with an application for information retrieval will bring benefits for the company.

The article presents the results of research on ways of gaining knowledge required during classes, among Mechanical Engineering students at Lublin University of Technology. Obtained results will allow an identification of the type of educational resources most often used by students, as well as identification of the sources containing content-related mistakes.

The current paper refers to the particular phonetic and phonological substance of the Chinese language. The key topics include the acoustic features of tonal languages, speech sound and audio-perception, as well as some issues of acquisition of Chinese language skills and reception conditions. The difficulties in tonal phonemes identification in hearing-impaired native Chinese and in non-tonal language users learning Chinese as a foreign language inspire the scientists to research the register of tones, acoustic features of tonal languages, the fundamental frequency (F0), tone contour and duration, and the speech signal – natural and subjected to filtration.

In Latvia there are no substantial studies on bilingual preschool children’s Latvian language as the second language. The article provides an overview of the 20th–21st century linguistic theories in the context of child second language acquisition as well as raises awareness about their infl uence on and use in the learning of preschoolers whose second language is Latvian, carrying out content analysis of the Minority Preschool Education Program(with instruction in Russian), the Latvian Language Program of X preschool education establishment, teaching resources (teaching aid kits, didactic handouts) as well as the Latvian language as the second language study content.The conclusion is drawn that the theory of communicative competence and the systemic functional grammar theory prevail as well as the basic principles of the behavioral theory can be discerned. In the teaching resources and learning process it is advisable to more often incorporate the same language material repetition in different situations and new combinations. Consideration must be given to more positive and negative transfer (interference) emphasis. To prevent children’s errors it is advisable to provide and incorporate special exercises in the teaching resources as well as methodological recommendations for the Latvian language teachers.

In this paper the incidental language acquisition of 11-year-old Flemish children (n = 30) who have not received any formal English instruction is investigated. The study looks into children’s English proficiency and the learner characteristics that can be associated with it. In order to measure the children’s English proficiency, a receptive vocabulary test and a proficiency test (which measured listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills and writing skills) were used. Information about learner characteristics was gathered through two questionnaires (for children and parents). The results show that a significant proportion of the 11-year-olds can already perform tasks at the A2 level (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) without having had any formal instruction. The study confirms that children learn English from the input they receive through different media (especially gaming and computer use). Furthermore, the data reveal a strikingly positive attitude towards English and demonstrate that in some situations Flemish children prefer using English over their L1 with their peers.

The longitudinal intervention study reported here is the first to investigate the efficiency of computer learning software specifically designed for dyslexic Swiss German learners of Standard German as a second language (L2) and English as a third language (L3). A total of 40 subjects (20 of them dyslexics and 20 of them nondyslexics; 10 students from each group participated in in- terventions and the other 10 from each group served as control groups) were assessed with a battery of verbal and written pre- and posttests involving pho- nological/orthographic and semantic measures of their L2 and L3 before and after three months of daily intervention with the software. The results show that computer-based training in the L3 is potentially an important tool of intervention for dyslexic students as it has a positive effect on the components of L3 as well as L2 learning. As a consequence of their progress in acquiring the relationships between L3 graphemes and phonemes, the experimental groups, but not the control groups, made significant gains on L2 naming accuracy and speed, L2 and L3 word reading, L2 and L3 phonological awareness, and L2 and L3 receptive and productive vocabulary and comprehension tasks.

Instructed second language acquisition (ISLA) has been referenced in the larger field of the SLA literature for over two and a half decades. Currently, there are several theoretical underpinnings accounting for processes assumed to play a role in ISLA and quite an impressive number of studies have empirically addressed some aspect(s) of ISLA. Recently, a lengthy and relatively cohesive treatise of this substrand of SLA research in relation to both theoretical, empirical, and pedagogical perspectives has been published in two books (cf. Leow, 2015a; Loewen, 2015), and a new model of the L2 learning process in ISLA has been proposed (Leow, 2015a). These publications are timely and important given that the concept of ISLA not only needs to be clearly defined but also situated contextually. To this end, this article (a) revisits current definitions of ISLA in the SLA literature with the aim of identifying specific features of ISLA that underlie such definitions, (b) deconstructs ISLA by probing deeper into what comprises the termsinstructed andSLA in ISLA, (c) provides a brief summary of the cognitive processes and variables postulated by the theoretical underpinnings of ISLA and pertinent empirical research, (d) recommends that ISLA be observed from one curricular approach together with its empirical and pedagogical ramifications, and (e) provides some measure of direction future ISLA research may follow.

The norm of received pronunciation and its description in the codification does not have a long tradition. Beside short remarks in grammars, several short individual works were written since the mid-19th century but they were usually not generally accepted. Although 75 years ago, general guidelines for the codification of the pronunciation in Czech were proposed, followed by the first publication 60 years ago, its practical implementation was difficult. It should have an impact on public speech but the articulation mechanism is fixed naturally since childhood, and the defects are hard to remove without motivation. What is more, pronunciation instructions are presented in a written form, and it is necessary to express them with the user – a layman – in mind. Still, endeavours should be made to understand and to codify the pronunciation norms.

First language acquisition – imitation or innate gift? Analysis based on selected theories of first language acquisition and basic language systemsThis article deals with a surprising phenomenon typical only for human beings – first language acquisition. Its aim is to answer the question as stated in the title. The author, an English teacher working in a nursery school, looks for the answer using references to theories connected with this topic, and in addition, takes into consideration the speech of children she is in charge of. In order to demonstrate the sophisticated nature of human language, the author refers to several definitions of this term. She presents the term ‘mother tongue’ and analyses the ways of acquiring its phonetic, phonological, morphological and syntactic systems by children. She also gives numerous examples of the most common mistakes found in their speech, taken from Polish and English languages. Furthermore, three major theories regarding first language acquisition, presenting the approach of Piaget, Chomsky and Skinner to this phenomenon, are described in the article. The author reaches the conclusion that first language acquisition is a mixture of imitation and innate gift. The role of the physical mechanism enabling a human being to produce speech and that of contact with the language of a child’s parents merits emphasizing also. The result of these factors is the possibility of language acquisition.

Wartość godziwą wprowadzono do rachunkowości stosunkowo niedawno. Jest to kwota, za jaką dany składnik aktywów mógłby zostać wymieniony, a zobowiązanie uregulowane na warunkach transakcji rynkowej. Chociaż założenia tej metody są słuszne, to jednak w praktyce szacowanie wartości godziwej nierzadko okazuje się trudne i niejednoznaczne. Zgodnie z obowiązującymi przepisami wycena aktywów i zobowiązań według wartości godziwej konieczna jest także w celu ustalenia tzw. wartości firmy przy transakcjach przejęcia innej jednostki lub jej zorganizowanej części. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie, jak bardzo może się różnić wycena bilansowa od wartości godziwej poszczególnych elementów bilansu przygotowana na potrzeby przejęcia innej jednostki. Które elementy charakteryzują się największymi rozbieżnościami i z czego to wynika? Odpowiedzi na te pytania dostarczą dane dotyczące transakcji przejęcia Kredyt Banku S.A. przez BZ WBK S.A. W pracy wykorzystano analizę porównawczą danych finansowych.
The fair value was introduced into the accounting relatively recently. It is the amount for which an asset could be exchanged, or a liability settled at arm’s length transaction. Assumptions for this method are correct, but in practice, the estimation of fair value often proves difficult and ambiguous. In accordance with current regulations, valuation of assets and liabilities at fair value is also necessary to establish the so-called “goodwill” for transactions of acquisition of another company or its organized part. The aim of the article is to show how much a balance sheet valuation can differ from a fair value of the individual elements of a balance sheet prepared for the purpose of acquisition of another company. Which elements have the highest disparities and what is their source? An answer to these questions will be found in the data regarding the acquisition of Kredyt Bank SA by BZ WBK SA. The study was based on a comparative analysis of financial data.

Autor analizuje zarówno koncepcje pojęcia błędu w każdej ze szkół, jak i sposoby ich badania.
The aim of the paper is to investigate the methods of error analysis in second language acquisition. The review of approaches to error analysis is based on the works of American researchers and at the same time is a short presentation of main schools of second language acquisition in the United States. The author discusses behaviorism, cognitivism, and the dialogical school. He takes into consideration not only the concept of error, but also the methods of error analysis.

The Act of 14 April 2016 on Withholding the Sale of Properties in the State Treasury Resources of Agricultural Properties and on Amending Certain Statutes has introduced changes into the Polish legal system which significantly restrict trade in agricultural properties. These changes concern, inter alia, positive prescription of broadly understood agricultural properties. In accordance with the amended law, agricultural properties referred to in the provisions of the Act of 11 April 2003 on the Development of the Agricultural System may be acquired through positive prescription only by individual farmers in the meaning of this Act; furthermore, certain obligations have been imposed on the parties acquiring agricultural properties through positive prescription relating to their use of the properties they acquire, with far-reaching sanctions imposed thereupon. The law which has been introduced raises serious concerns, inter alia, at the level of its interpretation, including, in particular, in the context of the aims intended to be attained by the legislator by significantly and comprehensively restricting trade in agricultural properties.
Ustawą z dnia 14 kwietnia 2016 r. o wstrzymaniu sprzedaży nieruchomości Zasobu Własności Rolnej Skarbu Państwa oraz o zmianie niektórych ustaw w polskim porządku normatywnym wprowadzone zostały zmiany istotnie ograniczające szeroko pojęty obrót nieruchomościami rolnymi. Zmiany te dotyczą między innymi nabywania nieruchomości rolnych w drodze zasiedzenia. Zgodnie ze znowelizowanymi przepisami nieruchomości rolne, o których mowa w przepisach Ustawy z dnia 11 kwietnia 2003 r. o kształtowaniu ustroju rolnego, mogą być nabywane w drodze zasiedzenia jedynie przez rolników indywidualnych w rozumieniu tej ustawy; nadto, na nabywców nieruchomości rolnych w drodze zasiedzenia zostały nałożone pewne obowiązki związane z korzystaniem z nabytych nieruchomości, obwarowane daleko idącymi sankcjami. Wprowadzone uregulowania budzą poważne wątpliwości między innymi na poziomie konstrukcyjnym, w tym w szczególności w kontekście celów, które zamierzał osiągnąć ustawodawca istotnie i kompleksowo ograniczając obrót nieruchomościami rolnymi.

This study explores the acquisition of definiteness and article use in written Swedish by Finnish-speaking teenagers (n=67) during the three years in secondary school. The studied grammatical phenomena are problematic for all L2 learners of Swedish and are especially difficult for learners, such as Finns, whose L1 lacks expressive definiteness morphologically. The informants produce complex NPs already in their first narratives. The form of NPs poses significantly more problems than the choice of a correct form of definiteness. Hence, it is possible that previous knowledge in English helps informants in the choice of definiteness. The common nominator for problematic expressions is simplification, in both formal aspects and in the relation between form and meaning. Previous research in Sweden has made similar findings. The most central types of NPs build an acquisition explainable by a complexity hierarchy between the different types of NPs. The informants master best NPs without definiteness markers. Definite singulars containing an ending are significantly easier than indefinite singulars, the indefinite article of which is notoriously difficult for Finns learning Swedish as an L2. For a historian of immigration observing current debates, less disturbing than what people don’t know about immigration history, are the things they “know” that simply aren’t true. Recent immigrants are often held up to an impossible standard of the melting pot that was a much slower and more messy process than it appears in the romanticized hindsight of public memory. This paper offers an overview of the process of negotiation and mutual accommodation that has always figured prominently in the integration of immigrants into our society over the past two centuries. Except for the origins of immigrants and the color of their skin, little has changed over the last two centuries. English is alive and well, even on the Mexican border and the West Coast. In Amy Tan’s autobiographical novel, The Joy Luck Club, an immigrant mother laments that her daughter’s Chinese vocabulary hardly extends beyond “pee-pee” and “choo-choo train,” asking plaintively, “How can she be her own person? When did I give her up?” Immigrant parents have been asking that question for a long time. Some things never change.

The concept of affordances originating in Gibson’s work (Gibson, 1977) is gaining ground in multilingualism studies (cf. Aronin and Singleton, 2010; Singleton and Aronin, 2007; Dewaele, 2010). Nevertheless, studies investigating affordances in respect of teaching, learning or using languages are still somewhat rare and tend to treat isolated aspects of multilingualism. This is despite the fact that the theory of affordances can actually provide a valuable, supplementary, up-to-date framework within which a clearer, sharper description and explication of the intriguing range of attributes of multilingual communities, educational institutions and individuals, as well as teaching practices, become feasible. It is important that not only researchers and practitioners (teachers, educators, parents, community and political actors) but also language users and learners themselves should be aware of how to identify or, if necessary, design new affordances for language acquisition and learning. The aim of this article is to adapt the concept of affordances to multilingualism studies and additional language teaching, and in so doing advance theoretical understanding in this context. To this end the article contains a brief summary of the findings so far available. The article also goes further into defining the ways of how affordances work in relation to multilingualism and second language teaching and puts forward an integrated model of affordances.

In 2010 a collaborative working group was formed under the professional associations: International Association of Geodesy (IAG WG4.2.5) and International Federation of Surveys (FIG WG5.5). Entitled ubiquitous positioning, this working group aims to harness and develop existing research outputs available internationally in this research domain. Our goal over the next four years is to provide an online resource for academic and industry professionals, who can use these research outputs thereby reducing duplication and facilitating more rapid progress in the development of ubiquitous positioning systems. This paper presents a summary of the research activities and results of the working group to date. In particular, it presents the results of extensive testing to characterize the performance of a range of low-cost MEMS inertial sensors. The test scenarios, data acquisition software, processing tools and results obtained will be fully described and presented. The performance of these sensors in augmenting GNSS positioning is also presented using results obtained from a combination of loosely and tightly coupled Kalman filters. Finally, the future plans for the working group over the next four years and opportunities for wider collaboration will be discussed.

In this paper, an USB – DAQ interface unit that allows connecting data acquisition (DAQ) application to USB is presented. The unit contains two main components: USB to FIFO IC controller and application controller, designed as VHDL core for FPGA. DAQ logic can be connected to USB through simple I/O and streaming interfaces, thus development time of user application can be reduced. The design was tested with high-speed and SuperSpeed FTDI and Cypress USB – FIFO controllers.

The paper describes implementation of a new technology of digital systems design in case of medical measurement interface of IMPULS system used for acquisition of ECG signal from pacemaker patients. Similarly as in other applications, the processor circuit is a base of digital system, however - regarding large number of performed tasks - it is assisted by additional peripheral logic circuits. At the beginning, there were used standard elements (logic gates, counters, registers, etc.), however a growing complexity of beyond processor operations encouraged designers to apply the programmable circuits. The paper presents the stages of digital system development that has been implemented in medical measurement interface. It is the excellent example of possibility to integrate several standard elements in one integrated circuit.

Current fast development requires continuous improvement of employees’ skills and knowledge. Therefore, companies are looking for the best way for improving the employees’ qualifications and understanding of new concepts and tools which have to be implemented in manufacturing areas. One method employs gamification for this purpose. The aim of this paper is to present how gamification can increase the acquisition of knowledge concerning lean manufacturing concept implementation. Gamification is an active learning approach for people who will understand the subject easier by ‘feeling’ and ‘touching’ personally the analysed problems. The research utilized a questionnaire which assessed the game participants’ engagement level. The assessment focused specifically on the participants’ motivation, cognitive processing and social aspects. The participants were also examined before and after the game in order to assess the increase of their understanding of different lean manufacturing topics and tools. Five different games with different groups of participants were played. The results confirmed the hypothesis that gamification has a positive impact on the knowledge acquisition as well as on motivation, cognitive processing and social aspects. Finally, various insights on how to better design, conduct and utilize gamification in the similar technical context are presented.

The paper deals with the measurement preparation for the exhaust gases measurement. The measurement is carried out within the project of basic research. The aim of the project is the research of the influence of an unconventional charging intercooling on the selected ecological and economical parameters of a turbocharged compression ignition internal combustion engine in the specific operational conditions. The paper gives the information about the types, numbers, specification and position of the sensors used. The measuring scheme with the connection of sensors and connector blocks is also shown. The details about the single parts of the measuring chain are given. The paper also shows the view on the sensors through the photographs. Some results from a testing measurement are also shown and the results from the selected sensors can be compared. The two different intercoolers are used for charging air cooling. The first intercooler is the air/air type equipped with a ventilator, the second intercooler is the water/air type without a ventilator. The total displacement of an engine is 7.61. The measurement itself is aimed mainly to acquire information regarding the influence of the low temperatures of charging on the amount of NOx. Also the influence on the amount of particulate matter is examined through the mentioned measurement.

The development of electronic systems has significantly contributed to the rapid increase in the number of controllers working in vehicles, and thus the amount of data transferred between them. The large amount of information sent prevents the driver from directly mastering or understanding them, hence it was necessary to limit the displayed parameters on the instrument cluster to the most important ones, so that the driver can focus on driving. However, in motor sports and in various types of road tests or research, where the driver is supported by an additional team of engineers, information sent between vehicle controllers can prove extremely valuable. Most often, the whole staff of people responsible for conducted traction tests does not occupy the vehicle, so as not to disturb the conditions. Their analysis usually takes place in a designated service spot, in which case the parameters from the on-board data transmission network are usually transmitted by radio from the vehicle to the archiving system. Therefore, research into the development of wireless data transmission systems from vehicle controllers is also carried out at the Opole University of Technology. This article describes the possibilities of using a system built at the Opole University of Technology for wireless conduction of diagnostics and analysis of current operating parameters of a recreational All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV). In addition, in the designed system, it is also possible to connect external sensors to analyse parameters normally not registered during the course on normal vehicle operation.

In recent years there has been a growing interest to incorporate hypertext glosses into L2 reading materials and accordingly, it has provoked researchers to uncover to what extent and under which moderator variables a specific type of gloss yields more effective outcomes than other types of glossing. The present meta-analysis attempts to examine the magnitude of the effect of different gloss types (single vs. multiple glosses) on L2 vocabulary acquisition along with identification of the contextual factors that influence between-study variation through synthetizing 34 primary articles which satisfy the inclusion criteria. The overall effect size is found to be + 0.83 (p<0.05), indicating that multiple glosses (text+visual) has a large, positive effect on learners’ vocabulary acquisition than single mode of glossing (text-only). Moderator analyses further suggest that intensity of the program and L2 proficiency level are potential moderators influencing the heterogeneity between effect sizes, whereas the learning context, sample size and research design do not have such impact.

This article deals with the issue of legal position of lessees in a situation wherepart of agricultural (arable) land is excluded from the lease contract according to the provisions of the Act of 16 September 2011 amending the act on managing agricultural property of the State Treasury. This issue raises a number of interpretative doubts in connection with the extremely vague wording of the relevant provisions of the said act. In particular, controversy arises due to the parallel use, in the content of Article 4.7 of the Act, of the terms “authorisation” and “priority right”. According to the position of the Supreme Court, in such a situation, the lessee is entitled only in terms of the acquisition of real estate. In literature and in a number of judgments of common courts, there is also a position according to which the lessee has a claim to conclude a sales contract. The analysis presented in the article leads us to a conclusion that under the regulation of Article 4.7 of the Act of 16 September 2011, the position according to which the lessee shall have priority in the purchase of real estate, is correct.

The processes that take place in the mind of a multilingual person during the second language acquisition are mostly shrouded in mystery. We can only observe traces of these processes manifesting themselves in the interpenetration of two or more linguistic systems. The current study aims to recognize how the knowledge of L1, in this case Spanish, influences on the acquisition and usage of the target language – Portuguese (L2), and how to take advantage of the interferences to make the L2 learners succeed. The possibility of linguistic influences grows with each acquired language. There are also important contributing factors such as a degree of similarity between the languages, a level of proficiency in each of them, and the manner and time of a language acquisition. During the Portuguese course at the Spanish Philology, we can observe such phenomena as: code switching or total displacement, hybrids, false friends, multi-word units calquing, and morphogrammatical transfer. Although one of the factors that affects the L2 acquisition is the level of proficiency, the students hardly take advantage of their mother tongue, selecting the language typologically closer to Portuguese, Spanish. The students use the previously acquired knowledge to create analogies that should be considered as an intermediate step in the acquisition of L2, not as something negative, but rather a means for providing a starting point for the analysis of error which, consequently, leads to improvement.

Over the past few years, a huge increase in the number of various computer vision applications can be observed. These are widely used in such areas as video surveillance, medical diagnostics, biometrics recognition, and the automotive and military industries. Most of these solutions take advantage of high-resolution cameras in order to obtain high-quality images. Surprisingly, little attention is paid in the literature to the practical implementation of off- the-shelf image acquisition systems. Most of the available solutions are composed of custom-developed electronic devices that use specialized multi-core DSPs and/or FPGA technology. Therefore, a novel realization of a scalable and comprehensive image acquisition system based on synchronized high-resolution Gigabit Ethernet cameras is presented in this paper. The proposed solution allows for the connection of multiple cameras along with any number of external illumination modules. The selected devices can be synchronized with each other in user-defined configurations; hence, a designed solution can be easily integrated in both simple and complex applications. The authors describe the design and implementation processes of the proposed platform in detail. The performance issues that can occur in such systems are presented and discussed. The obtained results are encouraging and useful for the development of similar solutions.

The article investigates and discusses the changes in the management of resources at Poznań University Library that were implemented over the last two decades (between 1992–2014). Based on the analysis of the internal regulations and adjustments concerning the acquisition policy and surrounding issues, the authors present the evolutionary process of its development over the last twenty years that has led to its present shape. Against this particular background, the accompanying changes in the work organization, structure and the management of the Library are also discussed.

While there is substantial research on literacy in the L1, factors impacting literacy in the L2 remain understudied. Preliminary research indicates that orthographic accuracy and typology influence literacy acquisition, indicating these aspects of linguistic representation need further exploration within the context of second-language acquisition (SLA). Additionally, SLA research on individual learner differences highlights emotional factors such as attitude and motivation, which are widely considered critical indicators of L2 success. Motivation is closely linked to perceptions towards the L2, which indicates learner perceptions of L2 literacy could impact success in learning to read and write. As such, this paper presents a cross-lingual, mixed-methods study that compares the orthographic transparency and typologies of 26 languages against learners’ (n = 217) perceptions of L2 literacy acquisition, such as perceived difficulty of the orthography and a self-assessment of literacy skills. Results indicated that orthographic transparency has a greater impact on learners’ perceptions compared to typology alone.

Opis:
W pomiarach środowiskowych dużą grupę stanowią pomiary parametrów powietrza atmosferycznego. Są to najczęściej pomiary ukierunkowane na podstawowe parametry gazów takie jak temperatura, ciśnienie, wilgotność, skład, zanieczyszczenia. Najtrudniejszą grupą pomiarów są precyzyjne pomiary parametrów dynamicznych związanych z ruchem powietrza. W tekście przedstawiono samodzielnie zaprojektowany system do wielopunktowego pomiaru prędkości i ciśnienia powietrza. Przykładowe wyniki działania systemu pomiarowego zamieszczono w końcowej części artykułu.
A large group of measurements among environmental measurements are measurements of atmospheric parameters. The most common measurements are focused on the basic parameters of gases such as temperature, pressure, humidity, composition, pollution. The most difficult group of measurements is accurate measurements of the dynamic parameters associated with the movement of air. The text presents the self-designed system for multi-point measurement of velocity and air pressure. Examples of the results of the measurement system are given in the final part of the article.
