The results presented here are taken from empirical studies relating to the relation between academic achievement and sex, type of school, and self-esteem, as well as self-esteem and sex, school level, and academic achievement. Aside from specific issues, these results show, first, that levels of achievement and self-esteem in middle school show much lower values than in high school and primary school. Secondly, although girls show a higher level of achievement, there is no difference between their self-esteem compared to the self-esteem of boys.

The culture of inquiry in moral thought had already introduced the method of eliciting judgement about images and stories through open-ended questions in the first third of the 20th century. In our research, we investigated the moral reasoning of students. We sought to answer how pupils in public, Catholic, and Waldorf schools judge moral dilemmas in fictional stories. Students’ (N=1144) responses to single-choice selective closed-ended (yes or no?) and open-ended (why?) questions about the reason for their choice were used to judge the decisions of the characters in three realistic, believable, age-appropriate stories. In the first story, taking unlawful advantage was accepted most by public school students and least by Catholic school students. In the second story, the actors’ solution method was rejected mainly by Waldorf students, with social justification. In the third story, there was no significant difference between the perceptions of the school models’ pupils, with a similar pattern of rejection. The results are only valid for Hungary.

Opis:
Jesuit boarding schools did not fulfil only social roles. They were educational institutions shaping discipline, morality and religiousness of their pupils. The monks organized various activities for their students which were conducive for acquiring and consolidating knowledge. Students’ time was filled with the review of school material, literary exercises, debates or production of theatre performances. The offer depended on the degree of exclusivity of a given establishment. In the Second Republic of Poland, there functioned three Jesuit schools for laymen: in Khyriv (Pol. Chyrów), Vilnius and Gdynia. Only the first two ran boarding schools. Both boarding schools offered very good living conditions, and the life of the alumni passed according to a similar, clearly defined day rhythm. The institutions in busy urban Vilnius and peripheral Khyriv were very much different. The educational process used for the boarding students from Vilnius lacked special rigours, which was different from the methods generally accepted at that time. The behaviours of boarding students from Khyriv, in turn, were regulated in the minutest detail by Statutes and regulations and the system of punishments was very elaborate. The schools tried to restore order by the method of overcoming the resistance of the more independently feeling and thinking pupils.

The social situation of students with disabilities, due to existing stereotypes, social distance, not coping with the diversity and many other factors will be complex. The purpose of this article was to analyze the situation of pupils with sight disabilities in non-segregated forms of education: mainstream and integrated schools. Participation in social relations of blind and visually impaired students is described from two perspectives: the objective expressed in the sociometric position in the classroom as well as subjective measured by social integration – satisfaction with peer contacts. Existing relationships between these two variables and factors moderating it became the basis for interpreting the results of research conducted on a group of 60 students with visual impairment. A significant correlation between positive sociometric status and social integration, while generally neutral sociometric positions and relatively high satisfaction with peer contacts might suggest, that students with visual impairment in nonsegregated education forms are tolerated and subjectively do not feel the negative attitudes of their peers. Unfortunately, rarely they belong to the category of accepted students.

The ensuing article tackles the problems of closing small schools. It constitutes an attempt to reflect upon a new phenomenon, which is becoming more and more common, and it is caused by the introduction of austerity in the budgets of self-government entities liable for running educational institutions. This difficult and complicated situation means that local communities are forced to undertake essential solutions towards this new reality, which concerns mainly children and their parents. Discussion over these solutions will aim at searching for effective and economic ways of the running and functioning of small schools appropriated for liquidation. The undertaken problems seem to be justified because of approaching political and economic changes occurring at both national and local scale.

1519 was a special year for the city of Poznań, owing to the foundation of a new school, the Lubrański Academy. It was the first school of humanities in Poland to follow the best models of Renaissance education and employed illustrious teachers like Krzysztof Hegendorfer and Benedykt Herbest. In the 16th century, the Academy was considered a rival of Krakow University; ultimately in the early 17th century, the Academy was affiliated with the University. As a result of the affiliation, the Poznań school enjoyed stability, a group of experienced teachers and a curriculum recognized by the society. The curriculum stood out in Poland by its inclusion of practical preparation for performing various political functions, especially in the field of law, and, as in other educational institutions, by preparing young people for cultural life in the country. Its relations with Krakow University also had drawbacks: during the Enlightenment reforms of the education system, the Lubrański Academy adopted a conservative and reactionary position. Despite this, the authorities managed to introduce several modern solutions, especially in the realm of teaching modern foreign languages.

This article presents the results of research conducted on the research sample of N=388 teachers in rural secondary schools. The aim of the research was to answer the problems concerning knowledge and activities undertaken by teachers in rural secondary schools in the prevention of the phenomenon of cyberbullying. The method used in this study was diagnostic survey. The research technique was individual, categorized interview, based on the author’s interview questionnaire. The collected data shows that educational classes are the most popular preventive actions organized in secondary schools in rural areas on the safety of children and young people in the Web. As part of preventive actions, the majority of teachers take the conversations with students to raise their awareness in the area of the dangers associated with the use of the Web. Analyses flow requests that the level of knowledge of the actions and initiatives organized by the institutions, especially the local environment, as well as the level of knowledge of websites and telephone hotlines among teachers in rural secondary schools is low. Such a low level of knowledge will translate into the quality of preventive measures implemented by teachers, especially in the aspect of information strategy.

While European nations are in the process of schooling large numbers of refugee youth from the Middle East and Northern Africa, empirical research on successful methods of social integration of this vital next generation of citizens is sparse. To address this void of knowledge, we review relevant lessons learned about school-based interethnic relations in the United States (U.S.) that offer some insights into successful social integration. By focusing on refugee youth’s needs to feel safe and connected in school, we focus specifically on social policies and educational practices that separate vs. integrate different ethnic groups together in schools and classrooms. To understand how and why segregation of groups fosters prejudice, while diversity promotes greater school safety and connectedness, we specifically highlight the role of cross-group friendships and the development of multiple social identities. Recommendations for new research directions on refugee youth are also provided.

The study concerns Polish fencing (hussar sabre fighting) and Japanese kenjutsu (art of sword). It focuses on forms of their promotion as well as popularization and its scope. In the light of history, theoretical sociology and anthropology of martial arts selected relevant facts are discussed in an attempt to explain the reasons for the changes which have occured. An attempt is also made to compare the progress of the process of institutionalization in the case of both martial arts. Three complementary qualitative research methods were used: a long-term observation in the role of a participant (25 years), content analysis of the literature and the case study. In addition, the author presents the case study of an international seminar on kenjutsu of the Katori Shinto-ryu school organized in Kraków. The date of the seminar coincided with the 20th anniversary of the battle demonstration where a representative of the fencing school fought against W. Zabłocki, a master of the Polish hussar sabre, and the 25th anniversary of practising martial arts of aikibudō and kobudō in Poland (including kenjutsu of the said school). Japanese kenjutsu is much more advanced in comparison to the Polish historical art of fencing in terms of institutionalization and popularization. However, the two-day seminar on old Japanese fencing in Krakow was an example of a cultural meeting, dialogue and educational experience confirming validity of the theory of dialogue between cultures. Polish martial arts as part of the national heritage need to be supported by the state government.

The aim of the article is to present the achievements of Professor Tadeusz Sulimirski, an archaeologist, in reference to organising and managing Polish education in exile, 1941–1947. The biographical method prevails in this research paper, presenting one of the leading figures in the Office of Education and School Affairs, as well as the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment of the Polish government in exile. Tadeusz Sulimirski launched numerous initiatives aimed at developing and streamlining all the forms of Polish education in exile. He cooperated very closely with General Józef Haller. He devoted much attention to developing Polish higher education in exile. Once the Polish government in London was no longer recognised by the British government, Professor Tadeusz Sulimirski became head of the Department of Education, formed on 7 July 1945, of The Interim Treasury Committee for Polish Questions established by the British. He demonstrated great creativity and organizational skills, while very competently coordinating the gradual discontinuation of Polish education in Great Britain and, to some extent, in some of the British dominions. He took great care of the financial situation of Polish students in Great Britain and in the Middle East. He also received students and schools from General Władysław Anders’ Polish II Corps evacuated from Italy to Great Britain. In the post-war years he was an active member of Polish academic circles. He greatly contributed to the development of Polish education in exile and to establishing Polish identity among war refugees.

Military education, as an integral and inseparable part of building the army as an institution, is changing its identity and tends to be becoming a place of development, changes, scientific research, quality teaching and education. Adoption of the National Curriculum Framework is creating conditions for these changes. Introduction of the military schools curriculum will inevitably lead to the hidden curriculum. In adult education (andragogy), the hidden curriculum appears in a more vigorous and influential form. The ability to function and the high reliability of the military system are based on hierarchy in which the formation of will is carried out from top downwards. The most prominent factors are command, obedience and reporting. In such an environment, we recognise the positive and negative effects of the hidden curriculum in Croatian military schools.

One of the main problems that were to be faced during the post-war era was educating new commanding personnel for the purposes of the Polish people’s army. The educational programmes and aims, which were being carried out at Polish military schools were imposed by the socialist system as well as a dynamic political situation in Poland. The very first post-war years were stigmatized by strong Soviet influence, which impacted both the organization of military educational system as well as the process of bringing up the army which was taking part in the mentioned institutions. Just as the reality was changing, so was the point of view at the education of a Polish officer. In the given paper educational activity present at military schools was showed, based on four main Polish military schools: The Naval Academy (Akademia Marynarki Wojennej), The National Defence Academy (Akademia Obrony Narodowej), Military Technical Academy (Wojskowa Akademia Techiczna) and Military Political Academy (Wojskowa Akademia Polityczna), from the end of World War II to the 1990’s.

The participants in the study were 469 primary school teachers from seven regions of Turkey. The data were collected via an Organizational Trust Scale. Data analysis was performed with the use of descriptive statistics, t test, one way-ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis H Test and Pearson Products-Momentus Correlation. The results of the study revealed that Turkish primary school teachers’ overall trust perceptions about their schools are high, but that they have a “moderate” level of trust perceptions about their shareholders—students and parents.

In 1863 Bishop Curia in Tarnow published a document (instruction) addressed to teachers of parish and trivial schools in the area of the Tarnow diocese working in villages and towns. A few issues were discussed in it, namely general rules of teacher’s conduct; teacher’s domestic and family life; teacher’s work at schools in church and sacristy and functioning in local environment. This instruction allows to accurately recall everyday life and school responsibilities of teachers working in these social environments.

W latach 1990-2007 powstały 42 szkoły publiczne i 322 szkoły niepubliczne.
Political, social and economic transformation, which have been taking place in Poland from 1989, were the grounds for the changes in the higher education system. Especially young people showed an interest in education, because they had limited chances in finding an attractive and well-paid job. This is why an evolution in the range of higher education was marked by a rapid demand for higher education. As an effect of this social requirements there was an increase of the number of higher education institutions. In 1990-2007 came into being 42 public schools and 322 private schools. The higher education financing system in Poland performs the division into public schools financing from the state budget and private schools which procure funds sporadically for the statutory activities. The development of the personnel academic is not stable and shows a tendency towards getting older. The decrease in birth rate is not conductive to the development of the private universities, which incomes are mainly from the fees collecting from students.

After World War II, high schools in the Gdansk region had to be built virtually from scratch. However, it is evident there were some major differences between the new and old districts, where the schools’ tasks went beyond teaching. Their role was to integrate local communities and give them a sense of stability. The former secondary school districts began their activities on the basis of pre-war organisational structures, and were established very quickly, almost immediately after the war ended. However, the network of grammar schools in new counties formed much more slowly, although in the 1945/46 school year there was already a secondary school in each county town. The intensity of the development of secondary schools can be shown in numbers. In the 1944/1945 school year, 14 secondary schools were established, and a year later there were already 28. With the development of institutional schools, their organisational development followed. Within a year, the number of students nearly trebled. Quickly, though not as strongly, there was an increase in the number of teachers. The major breakthrough for these institutions was 1948, in which, by decision of the school and party authorities, Poland experienced the reorganisation of general school education.

Polish schools achieve their educational aims, as set out in the curriculum, within the framework of obligatory class periods. Extracurricular activities may be organised when schools receive additional funding from local government budgets. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the relationship between the socio-economic conditions of individual Warsaw districts and the availability of extracurricular activities in those districts' primary schools. The analysis carried out during this study disproved the initial assumption that more affluent districts with higher per capita incomes and a higher proportion of expenditures directed towards educational aims would be characterised by a larger offer of extracurricular activities. Rather, what distinguishes districts with the highest availability of extracurricular activities is their peripheral location within the territory of Warsaw. There, schools ensure longer hours of supervision for children and organised the time after class, which offers support to the parents. It is likely that it is the parents who, due to their relatively longer commute between home and work, support the organisation of such activities, not least financially.

A growing number of arts therapists around the world work in schools, but information on their practices is limited. The aim of this work is to examine the theoretical influences and therapeutic trends prevalent in Czech educational institutions. Data obtained from 142 respondents were collected using the “Practice of Arts Therapies” questionnaire. Based on a statistical analysis of the responses, the results show that therapists prefer predominantly humanistic trends with a wide range of other therapeutic influences based on assimilative integration tendencies. Contrary to the initial assumptions, it was found that there is little difference in the preferences for trends in different work environments. The results can be used for international comparisons of arts therapies in the educational environment, as they seem to be an important area of interdisciplinary practice associated with education.

The Russian Partition was characterised by the dual existence of Polish private schools an governmental schools focused on the Russification of young Polish females. In Galicia, the most controversial issue was the creation of female secondary schools, the completion of which would enable a young woman to pursue university studies. Among the numerous pieces of information pertaining to the social life of the population of the Kingdom of Poland and Galicia a number of notes and articles about the necessity to undertake the construction of schools were published. The authors would frequently mention the outrageous conditions in which children were forced to study, the lack of flats for teachers, and the failure to follow the rules of hygiene in schools. It was argued that combating illiteracy could bring positive results by securing the proper conditions for raising and educating all school-age children. Discussions in the press covered examples of local initiatives aimed at building schools, as well as ways of making the local communities of villages and towns more active.

The aim of this project was to create a ranking of the nursery schools in Wrocław with regard to the quality of the acoustic environment on their premises, using a specially developed evaluation methodology. Each nursery school was rated according to an adopted grading scale on the basis of the noise level distribution on the playground and on the nursery school building facades. Using the grading scale one can classify nursery school premises into twelve categories characterized by different acoustic environment quality, from exceptionally good (< 45 dB) to exceptionally bad (> 70 dB). The appropriately rescaled data from the acoustic map of Wrocław and the authors’ own measurements and simulation analyses were used. The developed methodology was verified by comparing the ratings yielded by it with those determined on the basis of field measurements and simulation studies, carried out for several selected nursery schools. The paper presents the results of an acoustic environment quality assessment carried out, using the developed investigative methodology, for 118 nursery schools located in Wrocław.

The aim of this article was to make an attempt to outline the perception of the acculturation process of Ukrainian children in Polish schools in their parents. Applying Berry's theory of acculturation, it was demonstrated that the systemic solutions concerning the education of children of a national minority in public institutions are rooted in the classical model of assimilation. The attitudes of the children’s parents who came to Poland for work or to escape war also indicate a desire to assimilate their children in the school environment as soon as possible, and at the same time to separate them in the home environment or in the group of compatriots.

Należy do nich zaliczyć uroczystości dworskie, narodowe, strój szkolny, koła naukowe i zainteresowań, biblioteki, czytelnie, gminy, orkiestry, wycieczki, pomoc ubogim uczniom, zbiórki na cele narodowe i społeczne. Ta ostania forma odegrała szczególną rolę w rozwijaniu wartości narodowych i patriotycznych. W znacznym stopniu przyczyniła się do tworzenia Legionów, a potem w niepodległej rzeczywistości armii polskiej.
The introduction of the constitution in the Habsburg monarchy in 1867 and the adoption of new laws between 1868–1873 seriously affected the Austrian and Galician education system. In the Polish context, achieving Galicia’s autonomy had created wider opportunities for the development of education. An expression of this was the National School Council established in 1867, which will act as the supreme authority over Polish education. From the beginning of the establishment, the Council expressed interest in the issue of raising young people. It takes place through forms of extra-curricular education. These include court ceremonies, national ceremonies, school attire, scientific circles and interests, libraries, reading rooms, school council, orchestras, trips, helping poor students collect money for national and social purposes Education was also carried out as part of out-of-school activities in cooperation with institutions dealing with educational issues. Outside the school, the upbringing of youth took place during religious ceremonies, scouting activities, dormitories, the „Sokół” Gymnastic Society or the shooting movement. This last form played a special role in the development of national and patriotic values. It significantly contributed to the creation of Legions, and then in the independent reality of the Polish army.

Linguists who collaborate with communities of speakers of endangered languages emphasize that it is often very practical matters such as the availability of resources or the political conditions in which they conduct fieldwork that influence their work the most. This article shows that linguists acting for the sake of endangered languages in a totally different environment, i.e. at European schools with students and teachers who usually are not familiar with the topic of language endangerment, may face similar challenges. I report on the results of a public outreach project aimed at raising awareness of language endangerment among secondary school communities in four European countries, and focus on Poland in particular. Three parallels with linguistic fieldwork are drawn in this article which are to illustrate that similarly to language documentation and revitalization projects, in public outreach enterprises the goals and views of external linguists may be radically different from those of the non-linguist parties involved. Mundane as they may seem, issues such as teachers’ working conditions need to be understood and properly addressed by linguists who wish to effectively bring their message about endangered languages across to the general public.

General Secondary Schools
szkolnictwo średnie ogólnokształcące
Opis:
A new form of government of the Polish state was combined with its rather intensive influence on the character of the educational system, including general secondary schools. That time is distinguished by numerous controversies, which then appeared in various social circles, political parties, and referred to the constitutional and organizational structure as well as the program structure of this school level. In the first years the controversies were more of an evolutionary character, as at that time discussion and exchange of opinions concerning differing standpoints and concepts for the Polish route to socialism were still possible. After 1948 there was no more room for discussion; the decisions about this sphere were also made by one group - the people related to the communist party (Pol. abbr. PZPR). Already right after the cessation of war activities, the tendencies leading to the centralization of education management were noticeable, and consequently, ever more intense influence of the government o f the working classes (lub the people’s government) on the functioning of schools, but, above all, on the teaching content. The process of centralization was linked with the so-called democratization process of school i.e., the question, of which the ruling communists made their priority.A consequence of democratization of the general secondary school and rendering it a tool for the manufacture of future citizens - devoted to and subjected to the government of the working classes - was the aspiration for closing private general secondary schools, and also the expulsion of religion from school. Such changes, falsely justified by the necessity to observe the principle of freedom of conscience and confession, led to the secularization of the school system. The discussed expulsion of the Church from schools, and at the same time from the sphere of educating a young generation, was supposed to serve the formation of a new socialist society in the future.

Introduction. Acrylamide is formed in several foods during high-temperature processing. In view of reports written about the neurotoxic, genotoxic and carcinogenic effects of acrylamide, it was considered that the presence of this substance in food products might pose a risk for human health. Currently, according to EU Commission recommendations, the content of acrylamide in food should be monitored. Objective. The aim of this work was to analyze the food preferences of youth and students from medical schools in Radom, central-eastern Poland, as the most frequent precipitantsas in the field of food products that may be a significant source of acrylamide in the diet. Furthermore, an attempt was made to determine the level of knowledge of the population in the field of acrylamide. Materials and method. The research was conducted by questionnaire. The study was based on the answers of 227 respondents. The survey was carried out by direct contact with an interviewer from February – June 2012. Results. Analysis of the study population shows that women consume more coffee than men. In addition, adults over 25 years old consumed the largest quantity of coffee; it can therefore be assumed that it is a significant source of acrylamide in their bodies. However, even young people under 17 declared that they consume coffee every day (20%). Conclusions. Due to the adverse effects of this compound it is important to reduce the level of acrylamide in food products. A few people in the population (7%) had heard of acrylamide previously, but none of them had any knowledge of its occurrence and formation. It is necessary to take strong action to change attitudes towards acrylamide and attempt to introduce ways to reduce this compound in the diet, for example, by appropriate selection of products in the daily diet and appropriate means of thermal preparation of products at home.

The objective of this study was to identify teachers’ diffi culties in implementing thematic learning in elementary schools. The study was phenomenology-type qualitative research. Data were collected through interviews followed by focus group discussion; the focus group discussion involved 15 elementary school teachers from eight provinces that had implemented Curriculum 2013. The data were analyzed by means of Cresswell’s steps. The results of the study showed that teachers encountered obstacles in selecting appropriate problems and themes within thematic, scientific and problem-based learning and in managing time for project-based learning. The availability of learning facilities was still limited. The problems found at the assessment stage was the teachers’ capacity in selecting appropriate techniques, in creating good instruments and in formulating clear assessment criteria.

The audit, which covered the years 2009 2011, was aimed at evaluating the organisation and results of educating and professional development of teachers, as well as at examining whether public funds assigned for this purpose were spent properly. The audit was conducted at the Ministry of National Education (MEN), at eight regional teacher development centres, at 23 local self-government units and at 23 public schools. In this audit, NIK has found several serious irregularities in the system for professional development for teachers, such as, in particular: the funds assigned for this purpose are not managed properly, qualifications gained by teachers tend not to be used after trainings, understated funds have been planned for teachers training in local self-government units budgets and in the budget of the Minister of National Education, and the promotion system for teachers is not connected with schools achievements.

Too little attention has been paid to the school institutions intended to educate and socialize the children of the upper classes. Greece has a significant history of private educational institutions. Yet their history and role within the educational system and society has been consistently neglected. The study of elite private education and its relationship with the social reproduction of the upper and middle classes in Greece has been even more neglected. Through a study of elite private secondary schools, following the theoretical model of Pierre Bourdieu, we explored the relationship that the middle and upper social strata of Greek society maintain with specific private schools. In order to determine the above, we conducted a quantitative field survey at 13 well-known private schools in Athens, using a questionnaire. In these schools we find considerable over-representation of the social categories that are placed at the summit of the social hierarchy. A basic argument of our study was that different sections of the middle and upper classes develop different educational strategies to ensure their social reproduction and to increase their privileges. These different strategies adopted by traditional and more recently emerging social classes are reflected in the differences among the elite private schools as a “field” and they distinguished the very top private schools from the less prestigious one. Also, we have found that sections of the Greek upper and middle class provide their offspring, through certain schools and activities, with an international capital which is a necessary condition for their future participation in international educational and professional markets. The study’s central research methodology included geometrical data analysis such as correspondence analysis.

the Charter of Secularism in the schools in France
Opis:
The French Revolution sought to discover the way to view freedom. At the end of the Revolution, they proclaimed the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. In French society, these fruits of the Revolution were con-sidered something sacred. Paradoxically, in a country that did so much to cleanse public life of religious factors, the same state has begun to create a religion of the state. All of the process after the Revolution, in particular, the Law of 1905 regarding the separation between the state and the church, has fortified the idea of secularism in French society. This process of the state was introduced in the schools because they wished to construct a society which was entirely secular which believed in the values of the Republic. They therefore made divisions between the public schools and the private ones. The public schools had a secular and a national character. The substantial difference be-tween the schools was that in the public schools, the teaching of religion as a separate subject was expelled and the religious issues in the teaching curricu-lum was reduced to the minimum. It appeared only as a background in the his-torical issues. Commenting on the Charter of Secularism, I seek to respond to the ques-tion – what happened which caused them to introduce this Charter of Secular-ism in the schools? We find the first response in the actions of the young peo-ple who want to be respected along with having their religious systems respect-ed. Such problems arose when the French introduced the prohibition of reli-gious symbols. However, the prohibitions did not resolve the problem. They therefore invented and introduced the Charter of Secularism of the French School. This is a kind of new way of presenting the idea of secularism to the students. The Charter was implemented as a way of reinforcing the prohibitions which had been previously introduced. It repeats the ideas which have been presented in the schools since the end of the French Revolution. Looking at the Charter, we have the impression that it is simply a repetition of the same phrases – that it is pure theory that has nothing in common with the reality. However, the French Ministry of Education always creates new initiatives which promote the presence of secularism in the schools. Unfortunately how-ever, they do not look at the problems of the young people. They don’t want to understand their identities and especially, their religious identities.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aims of the article are of three types: exploratory, descriptive, and explanatory. The exploratory aim includes striving to identify the basic facts related to the implementation of autonomy in non-public schools after 1989; the descriptive purpose includes an attempt to document the process of autonomy in non-public schools, and the explanatory objective includes developing and enriching theoretical explanations. RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: In relation to the subject matter, the research question is: how did the process of implementing autonomy in non-public schools develop? The research used a qualitative strategy, and the tool used during the research was an interview with the founders and principals of Polish non-public schools. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Non-public schools were being established in Poland after 1989 as a result of the political transformation. They were perceived as modern grassroots forms of education based on humanistic, democratic values. Autonomy was to be a tool and help in the fulfilment of those values and ideas. RESEARCH RESULTS: In non-public schools, autonomy was a gradual process. To a large extent, the scope of autonomy and participation in decision-making processes first of all depended on the management units, such as the principal and the governing authority. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: For the founders and principals of schools, autonomy in Polish non-public schools was an important element in building the school community, although it was carried out by trial and error because there were no available models for implementing autonomy. In future, it would be worthwhile to undertake empirical research of Polish public schools in the field of exercising autonomy, and then to carry out comparative research in this area.
PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: W związku z podjętą tematyką pytanie badawcze brzmi: Jak przebiegał proces wdrażania autonomii w szkołach niepublicznych? Warto byłoby podjąć w przyszłości badania empiryczne w odniesieniu do polskich szkół publicznych w zakresie realizowania autonomii, a w dalszej kolejności przeprowadzić badania komparatystyczne w tym zakresie.

Educational influence is among the essential tasks of school activities. It should be performed by all the teachers and especially by form tutors. The modern model of the form tutor was formed during the interwar period. After Poland regained independence, it also gained the opportunity of creating its own schools and of conducting educational tasks in accordance with the needs of the country and the society. Educating the youth became one of the most important tasks. The duties of form tutors had to be redefined, too. The educational authorities issued the relevant regulations, which were popularised by educational magazines and introduced into schools under the guidance of school principals and teachers’ boards.

Public secondary schools in Nigeria occupy a significant position for providing qualitative education, yet there has been increasing public discontent with the quality of students being produced in the country’s public secondary schools. Teachers are regarded as one of the resources necessary for achieving the goals of secondary education. It is against this backdrop that this study examined teachers’ collective efficacy as a predictor of students’ academic performance in North Central Nigeria. Three research questions and hypotheses were generated to guide the study, which made use of a correlation-type descriptive research design with a population consisting of all teachers in the North Central region. An instrument titled the Teachers’ Collective Efficacy Questionnaire (TCEQ) was developed to elicit pertinent data from the participants. Also, students’ academic achievement was measured. The results of the study revealed that no substantial nexus existed between the teachers’ experience and the students’ academic achievement. However, the teachers’ verbal encouragement was found to be an important predictor of the learners’ academic success. Similarly, the teachers’ academic emphasis was a significant predictor of the learners’ academic performance. Based on this, it was established that teachers’ collective efficacy is an important predictor that can be used to improve students’ academic achievement. The study recommended that education administrators should acquaint their staff with the importance of collective efficacy towards improving students’ academic performance. It was also recommended that the government should organize workshops, seminars, and conferences for the supervisors, principals, and teachers of schools on efficacy issues and that teachers should be well motivated to maintain a high degree of efficacy in their various schools.

The authors analyze the subject matter of articles published in leading economic journals in the European Union and compare it with the focus of research conducted by academics from top European schools of business, economics and management. The analysis focuses on the 1998-2007 period when a growing number of papers by researchers from Central European countries began to appear in international publications. The authors assume that a paper’s chances of international success largely depend on its subject matter. That is why it is important to study what subjects are covered by leading economic journals and to examine the focus of interest of academics from leading European schools of business, economics and management, Karbownik and Knauff say. The authors use data from the Journal of Economic Literature on the topics of articles published in economic journals by authors from schools affiliated in the CEMS alliance of business schools and multinational companies. Karbownik and Knauff conclude that although the schools differ from one another-especially Central European schools differ from their counterparts in “old” EU member countries-the gap is shrinking and it is possible to say what kind of research, in terms of the subject matter, should be encouraged to narrow this gap still further.

This article will discuss one of the main topics on the educational and social agendas in Israel. Integrating children and adults with special needs into schools and the community is a worldwide issue. Many researchers have tried to find and evaluate the most effective integration methods, to assist people with special needs and enable them high quality of life and equality. In this article, we will look at the process of integrating students with special needs and the transition that took place during the last few decades regarding the idea of “inclusion”, which is now a top priority for the Ministry of Education’s directors. Based on recent studies, we will examine whether school teaching staff and student teachers are ready to implement inclusive programs in schools as required. We will then propose ways to optimize the training of the educational staff, towards the implementation of the inclusive programs.

The present work focuses on the national cultures of the early 20th century in several European countries, such as Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Spain, Russia and Romania. Since my PhD thesis analyses the evolution of the Philharmonic “Transilvania”of Cluj between 1955-1989, there will be a thorough statistic of the concerts which were held during that period in which the orchestra performed musical pieces of the composers mentioned in this essay. For some concerts, there will also be stated the date when the concert took place, as well as the conductor who was invited to Cluj. There will also be an analysis of a piano work of the Romanian composer Constantin Silvestri (Chants Nostalgiques op. 27 no. 1) which I personally played a few years ago. The study will contain a musical bibliography, as well as several footnotes stating the documents found in the archives of the Philharmonic of Cluj.

In the context of globalization and the denial of civic virtues the patriotic education of high school students is still an important issue. It involves not only the transmission of knowledge, but it is also combined with the formation of attitudes. Teaching civics, based on fair, universal values, plays a special role in implementation of these processes. The purpose of this paper is to show the patriotic education of students of secondary schools in the teaching of civics. Therefore, first will be shown the essence of patriotic education. Then there will be described the program assumptions and the forms and methods of patriotic education of high school students, implemented in the teaching of civics. There will also be shown – in the form of concluding observations – the areas of educational activities which a civics teacher should pay a special attention to.

Regardless of when and where migration takes place, the situation of a child-migrant is similar. In the context of migration a child of school (or even preschool) age commonly encounters problems associated with relationships with people in specifi roles. Children are in contact with their peers belonging to the “indigenous” national community, and (possibly) also with peers of other nationalities, including other emigrants, the teaching staff, and the school system as a whole. A study of the situation and problems of immigrant children in one country can therefore provide valuable information on the possible directions of research, research methods and techniques, and the range of problems that such a study should take into account. Researchers of Polish emigration to Western Europe (especially of post-accession emigration) have already stressed the need to pay attention to the situation of the child-migrant. In this article I present some of the problems faced by child migrants and their families using case studies researched in Poland.

Philip Phenix’s (1964) book Realms of meaning: A philosophy of the curriculum for general education started the ever growing movement concerned with how school education might help young people in their search for meaning, purpose and values in times of rapid cultural change. Today, in globalised, digital, secularised culture, the importance and urgency of this role have never been greater. Religious Education, with core curriculum status in Catholic schools, has both credentials and precedents for studying directly the contemporary human quest for meaning to help resource the spirituality of young people, no matter what their religious disposition. But a ‘course correction’ is needed for the discourse of Catholic Religious Education which has ‘drifted’ almost so exclusively into ecclesiastical terminology that its educational credibility as a valuable spiritual/moral school subject has been eroded, creating an ever widening discontinuity with the realities of the classroom and young people’s spirituality. A more outward-looking and less Catholic-centric emphasis would help, without neglecting commitment to the faith tradition. While concerned with the Australian Catholic sector, the article may well have relevance to other countries and contexts.

Acoustic quality of a classroom is a term proposed to describe acoustic properties that contribute to a subjective impression received by a human, such as speech intelligibility, external noise, or vocal effort. It is especially important in classrooms, where suitable conditions should be provided to convey verbal content to students, taking into account their age. The article presents a method for assessing the acoustic quality of classrooms based on a single number global index and taking into account a number of factors affecting the outcome of the assessment. Partial indices are presented and their weights are proposed based on an analysis of factors determining whether a room meets applicable acoustic requirements. Results of the assessment of the acoustic quality carried out with the use of the developed method in selected classrooms are also presented.

The main aim of the article is to analyse expectations of entrepreneurs in the recruitment process of vocational schools graduates representing three countries: Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. Questionnaire survey conducted in 2016 is confirming that the most crucial elements to which employers are paying attention at seeking the employee are the experience of the candidate and the ability to constantly learn and improve. Moreover, the most desired skills in the view of employers are communicativeness, self-reliance, teamwork and organisational skills. One should emphasise there is a competence discrepancy between companies representing the analysed countries. An example can be the level of ICT skills and knowledge of foreign languages. Potential employers from Poland and Latvia agreed that the candidate for work does not have to be fluent in another language, for example, English. A communicative level in their point of view is sufficient.

Natomiast w znacznie mniejszym stopniu angażowani byli do prowadzenia nauczania w szkołach gminnych. Artykuł powinien przyczynić się do lepszego poznania dziejów oświaty w Galicji, zwłaszcza w kontekście działalności kadry nauczycielskiej szkół ludowych.
The paper is devoted to the participation of Roman-catholic priests and church servants in teaching in village schools of Galicia. The chronological frames are 1774 and 1873 when state authorities enforced school laws. Archival and printed sources as well as academic literature are the basis of research. In the paper I advance the point that clergy (especially parish clergy) was very eagerly joining the efforts to organize village (primary) schools at parishes. Three types of schools were opened: parish schools, trivial schools and municipality schools. Priests and church employees (in particular organ players) contributed massively to the teaching endeavors in parish and trivial schools. However, they worked in municipality schools much more rarely. The paper should contribute to a better understanding of history of education in Galicia, especially in the context of teaching staff’s activity in village schools.

Opis:
Przedmiot prezentowanych badań stanowiło szkolnictwo podstawowe zawężone do I i II etapu edukacyjnego (klasy I-III i IV-VI) na obszarach wiejskich województwa małopolskiego. Badaniom poddano 12 szkół podstawowych zlokalizowanych w powiecie miechowskim. Objęto nimi dwie grupy respondentów. Pierwszą stanowili opiekunowie uczniów, a drugą - dyrektorzy szkół. Badanie objęło 705 osób. W wyniku niekorzystnych tendencji demograficznych (ryc.
The subject of the research presented was primary education narrowed down to the first and second stages (grades1-3 and 4-6) within the rural areas of Malopolskie Voivodeship. The aim of the studywas to determine the operating conditions of the network of primary schools and the consequencesof closing schools on youth education. The article utilises data from the years 2000-2012 concerning the number of pupils and primary schools, as well as teachers working at those establishments, andthe state of the population of Malopolska’s (Lesser Poland’s) villages, made available by GUS BDL(Central Statistical Office - Local Data Bank). In order to achieve the research objective the resultsof own direct studies were also used, conducted in schools via the diagnostic survey method, as wellas studies of literature on the subject, including legal acts. Twelve primary schools were subject toresearch, all located in the district of Miechow. The studies were directed at two groups of respondents. The first group consisted of students’ guardians; the second - the head teachers of the surveyedschools. A group of 705 respondents was covered by the survey. Due to unfavourable demographic trends (Fig. 1) in the rural areas of the Malopolskie Voivodeshipin the years 2000-2012, the number of students fell by 30% (Fig. 2). The consequence of this wasthe closure of 143 primary schools, which meant reducing their number by 12% (Fig. 3). Mostly small rural schools were closed in the typically agricultural areas of the north-eastern part of thevoivodeship, and less populated areas of south-eastern and eastern Malopolska (Fig. 5). This processalso took place in cities, to a lesser extent, where the decline in the number of children per school issignificantly higher as compared to the rural areas (Fig. 4). The number of closed schools would have been much higher if not for the actions of the local communities. They exploited the opportunity totake over schools through the establishment of associations and social organisations and, at the nextstage - to change the managing authority (Fig. 6). As a result, the location of schools changed considerably.Studies conducted in schools of the Miechow district indicate that the average commuting time from home to school equals 21 minutes, and is longest to schools in areas where at least twoinstitutions were closed (Fig. 7). Most students arrive at school by school bus - 60% of students. The participation of students in extracurricular activities is directly connected to the form of transport.Only 44% of students attended additional classes.

The article analyses the essence of forest education in the context of its impact on shaping children’s attitudes. Referring to examples of forest activities, less structured than activities in school classes and allowing for greater independence for children, it argues for using various forms of forest education, because direct contact with the forest gives better opportunities to know, discover and understand nature and shape a culture of communing with the forest. At the same time, the importance of the forms and content of forest education for shaping pro-social attitudes is emphasised. Children with greater freedom of action learn to solve problems, make decisions, create rules and observe them and treat the forest environment with respect, which translates into respect for the whole world around them.

The appeal, in a form of a typical gloss, once again tries to encourage the members of the Parliament of the Republic of Poland to make the effort of providing comprehensive regulation of legal and organizational situation of Polish Folk High Schools and other adult education entities of non-commercial character.

The aim of the article is to present the contribution of Open-Air schools in the context of the evolution of the school environment and development of modern pedagogy. The article takes into account the historical context of evolution and the historical development of pedagogical ideas. The article focuses on the connection between pedagogy and architecture – regarding school, both disciplines are inextricably linked. Pedagogy is the theoretical foundation of teaching practice, implemented in an architectural space. The quality of this space is of great importance for learning outcomes. Consciously the design and architecture of a school creates something more than a simple housing for the process of education. It can create an environment for education and could strengthen that process in a synergistic manner. In reality, we can observe almost the opposite situation, when the school space, instead of comprehensively stimulating the students, becomes a materialized symbol of the oppressive nature of the educational system. Open-Air schools of the early twentieth century seem to be still an avant-garde and a model, which should be rediscovered. They offer the opportunity to develop social, emotional, and creative skills. These objectives are itemized by many as essential for education in the future.

Opis:
Polityka rządu polskiego w latach 1918-1939 wobec szkół żydowskich była zróżnicowana. Opisując politykę wobec szkół żydowskich, można ją podzielić na trzy okresy. W pierwszym okresie – od 1918 do 1926 roku – władze polskie prowadziły lojalną politykę wobec trzech typów szkół żydowskich – polsko-żydowskich, religijnych i z nauczaniem w języku hebrajskim. Nielojalna polityka dotyczyła szkół z językiem jidysz jako językiem nauczania. W latach 1926-1932 rząd polski aktywnie wspierał ruch syjonistyczny i partię "Agudat Israel". W drugim okresie wzrasta liczba szkół dwujęzycznych z językiem polskim i hebrajskim, polskim i jidysz, hebrajskim i jidysz jako językami nauczania. Lata 1932-1939 charakteryzują się dalszą polityką lojalności wobec szkół hebrajskich, wyznaniowych i dwujęzycznych. Polityka rządu polskiego wobec szkół żydowskich była zdeterminowana ogólną polityką wobec różnych partii i ruchów politycznych żydowskich.
The Polish Government Policy in 1918-1939 towards Jewish schools was diverse. Describing policy regarding Jewish schools, we can divide it into three periods. In the first period – from 1918 to 1926, Polish authorities implemented a loyal policy towards the three types of Jewish schools – Polish-Jewish schools, religious schools and schools with instruc-tion in Hebrew. A disloyal policy was towards schools with Yiddish as a teaching language. In the period from 1926 to 1932 the Polish government actively supported the Zionist move-ment and party „Agudat Israel”. One could deserve developing a network of „Tarbut” schools in Hebrew, which was subordinated to Zionist movement. Religious schools were rather developed, too. At the same time increased the number of schools in Yiddish, which were strongly pursued by local authorities and were illegal. In the second period increases the number of bilingual schools with Polish and Hebrew, Polish and Yiddish, Hebrew and Yiddish as teaching languages. The years 1932-1939 are characterized by further policy of loyalty to the Hebrew schools, religious schools, and bilingual schools. Policy of Polish Government towards Jewish schools was determined by general policy towards different Jewish parties and political movement.

This study examined the effectiveness of the mnemonic instruction in enhancing reading abilities among grade three learners with dyslexia in two public primary schools in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The Skinner’s reinforcement and the Information Processing theories were employed. A quasi-experimental design with one control group and one experimental group was used. Two schools, one was an intervention and was control one. A sample size of 43 learners was obtained in the two selected schools using purposive sampling technique. 23 parents (from the intervention school) participated in the questionnaires. The tools used were the Bangor Dyslexia Test, pre- and post- tests, and a reading comprehension test. The results revealed that there was a statically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores for the experimental group, t (22) = -10.753; p <.001, suggesting that mnemonic instruction is highly effective in enhancing reading abilities among primary school learners with dyslexia. The study recommends that the Department of Basic Education should revise the policy that reading is tested from grade one, instead of from grade three, that those who are not able to read do not proceed until and unless they are able to read, and to train teachers on how to use various approaches to enhance reading abilities, including mnemonic techniques.

Opis:
The quality of the air of the internal and external environment has always been of particular interest to man. In recent years more and more attention has been paid to the study of bioaerosol in didactic buildings, especially such as kindergartens and schools, because students and teachers staying at school for several hours can not be exposed to conditions harmful to their health. It should be emphasized that in schools where there are no ventilation systems and ventilation is primarily a method of airing, the concentration of microbiological factors and dusts are largely determined by the concentration of these pollutants contained in atmospheric air. The aim of the study was to perform a quantitative analysis of bacterial aerosol and to determine the particle size distribution in the premises of school buildings located in southern Poland. The research was conducted in ten schools located in different cities of the Malopolska province. Measurements of bacterial aerosol were made by using Andersen's 6-stage impactor, during school hours, in 4 naturally ventilated school rooms (small classroom, large classroom, gym, corridor) and outside. The capture surface were a standard Petri dishes, filled with Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA), for the determination of bacteria. Particular matter measurements were made with the DustTrak II sampler (model 8530, TSI Inc., Shoreview, MN, USA) and microclimate parameters – temperature and relative humidity were measured using the Kestrel 4000 Anemometer (Nielsen-Kellerman, USA). Studies have shown that the concentration of bacterial aerosol in the indoor environment of school premises ranged from 7 to 27 162 cfu·m-3 and was significantly higher than bacterial concentrations in outdoor air, where the concentration of bacteria ranged from 176 to 7 434 cfu·m-3. The highest concentration of bacterial aerosol was observed in the school corridor (27 163 cfu·m-3) and the small classroom (20 439 cfu·m-3). However, these differences were not statistically significant. Comparing the median of concentration of bacteria between the examined rooms, the highest differences were observed between the classrooms (median: 2 078 and 2 351 cfu·m-3) and the school corridor (median: 2 798 cfu·m-3), however, there was no statistically significant association (p < 0.05). Regardless of the tested environment, bacterial aerosol concentrations inside and outside the classroom were high and exceeded the proposal limit values for this type of interiors. As a result, it should think the equipping school buildings with a functioning, efficient ventilation or air conditioning system to provide "clean" air in school premises where teachers and students are present.

Introduction Since 1 January 2016 certain groups of nurses and midwives (N&Ms) have been entitled to administer certain medicines to patients and issue perceptions for it (independent nurse prescribing - INP), issue prescriptions upon physician's order (supplementary nurse prescribing - SNP) and to refer patients to determined diagnostic tests. Students’ knowledge on the possibility and principles of nurse prescribing seems to be important. Aim of study To evaluate the knowledge of 1st year students of Bachelor’s studies in nursing and midwifery on the possibility and principles of prescribing authorities of N&Ms in Poland. Material and methods 2338 1st year students of Bachelor’s nursing (1941) and midwifery (398) studies from 26 state higher vocational schools of universities. Own questionnaire assessed in the pilot study; the internal reliability of measurement on the knowledge rating scale was estimated by calculating Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient Results Group of 11% to 64% (depending on a question) gave correct answers. 14 % knew criteria which N&Ms are required to meet in order to refer patients to diagnostic tests. Almost 2/3 of the interviewees also knew where to find the list of active substances allowed in medicines independently prescribed by N&Ms. The internal reliability of the knowledge rating scale was 0,389. Conclusions The knowledge of students regarding N&Ms’ prescribing powers is superficial, but most of respondents knew the crucial issues. It is necessary to correctly determine education standards and to focus on their implementation tools, so that those concerned could acquire desired competences during studies.

A new form of government of the Polish state was combined with its rather intensive influence on the character of the educational system, including general secondary schools. That time is distinguished by numerous controversies, which then appeared in various social circles, political parties, and referred to the constitutional and organizational structure as well as the program structure of this school level. In the first years the controversies were more of an evolutionary concepts for the Polish route to socialism were still possible. After 1948 there was no more room for discussion; the decisions about this sphere were also made by one group – the people related to the communist party (Pol. abbr. PZPR). Already right after the cessation of war activities, the tendencies leading to the centralization of education management were noticeable, and consequently, ever more intense influence of the government of the working classes (lub the people’s government) on the functioning of schools, but, above all, on the teaching content. The process of centralization was linked with the so-called democratization process of school i.e., the question, of which the ruling communists made their priority. A consequence of democratization of the general secondary school and rendering it a tool for the manufacture of future citizens – devoted to and subjected to the government of the working classes – was the aspiration for closing private general secondary school, and also the expulsion of religion from school. Such changes, falsely justified by the necessity to observe the principle of freedom of conscience and confession, led to the secularization of the school system. The discussed expulsion of the Church from schools, and at the same time from the sphere of educating a young generation, was supposed to serve the formation of a new socialist society in the future.

Opis:
This article concerns distinct contexts of schooling for migrant children who are enrolled in private and public educational institutions in Poznań, Poland. In my study, I recognized that although the schools have different methodologies and languages of instruction, teachers expect the same obvious and predictable patterns of migration – either the children will stay in a country permanently or the children will immigrate somewhere else. This factor – educator expectations – can have more consequences on migrant children’s experiences than the differences between type of school – public or private. The exploratory fieldwork was conducted twice, once in 2010 and once 2013, in the same schools with the same group of students and teachers. In the article, I tried to address some obvious and unobvious practices of schools concerning migrant children, such as the myth of the language barrier as a main obstacle to learning, the lack of basic knowledge about countries of origin, the ignorance of multiculturalism as well as the phenomenon of individual treatment in both types of schools. In the recommendations, I give suggestions on how to perceive a migrant child as a strong and influential personality and how schools could conform to liquid migrations.

Aim. In recent decades, according to the enormous transformation in educational systems, the importance of educational spaces in the developed world has been increasingly sought after by educators and due to think of all the more attractive these spaces, they have thought differently. The present study was conducted to study the evolution of the educational environment of primary schools in Iran and Germany and compare them with each other.Methods. This research is descriptive research based on the comparative method. The study has also the standards criteria for designing primary schools in Iran and Germany.Results. The results of the research point to various differences between schools in Iran and Germany and then justify the differences similarities between the organization of primary education, description of the primary education system, selecting and training teacher education and similarity how to select and educate the teacher.Conclusion. The study showed In Iran, a major factor in the development of education is religion. In the pre-Islamic period, Zoroastrianism has been a factor in the philosophy and principles of education. After Islam, education has benefited from the philosophy and principles of Islam and has fully influenced primary education. But in the primary period of the German educational system, politics, ideology and the opinion of educators have played an important role in the transformation of education and, as such, in primary education.

Nowadays, when schools are closing and teachers are made redundant, a question arises whether the current educational system and the teaching methods or the knowledge and skills which people leave school with are adequate. Now, as never before, students and em-ployers realize how important practical skills are in the labor market. Where are schools and universities in meeting this need? Do schools answer the natural needs people have for self--development? Does the educational system stimulate development of individuals interests? Unfortunately, I think the answer to a lot of these questions would be negative. Yet, if so, it is time we fi nd a way to offer something more, not only to young people, but also to adults who want to explore the area of their interests by taking the trouble to obtain further degrees. One of the solutions to the urgent needs for the educational system is a pragmatic approach towards learning and teaching.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a trigger for the educational reform into on-line teaching for preschools, schools, and universities. All educational institutions were faced with this new and unprecedented situation. The change has been defined by technology and thus the education as we know it – face to face and inside a classroom – was transformed into an on-line and distance learning. Access to technology, internet platforms or on-line materials as well as teachers’, parents’ and students’ technological competence made the change challenging. Polish Saturday Schools are unique and autonomous institutions where learning, even under optimal circumstances, is demanding. Hence, an insight into the teachers’ perspective on the on-line delivery seemed valuable and important to research.
