Opis:
Strategia druga to podkupienie stylu eksplanacyjnego i kultury metodologicznej nauk o złożności. Strategia trzecia to zaciąganie u teorii złożoności długu terminologicznego. Strategia czwarta zaś, najtrudniejsza, to rozwijanie własnej, socjologicznej teorii złożoności.
The paper presents four strategies that sociology employs in the face of social complexity and the development of complexity science. The first strategy comes down to announcing bankruptcy on the part of the discipline or playing the role of a minor consortium member in transdisciplinary research projects within complexity science. The second strategy is 'buying' the explanatory style and methodological culture of complexity science. The third one is becoming indebted to complexity theory terminology. The fourth strategy, the most difficult one, is to develop its own, distinct sociological theory of complexity.

The Complexity Index method is an approach developed to help manufacturing companies quantify complexity in production. This paper sheds light on the connection between complexity and manufacturing problems and how the Complexity Index method was used to capture the areas in a production line with high levels of complexity to determine the sources of manufacturing problems related to labour time, surplus production, and manufacturing error. The main areas perceived as complex were due to Work Instructions, Work Content, and Product Variants. The perceived complexities were assessed for proper actions to be taken to decrease their level of complexity. The correlations between complexity and manufacturing problems were used for tracking related issues and ways for improvement. This study presents data on the use of workers’ perception to uncover the areas of complexity, which could be used by the management team to pragmatically capture difficulties and issues related to manufacturing problems to improve the production system.

Opis:
The purpose of the article is to adapt elements of the so-called complexity theory to analyzing the operations of the system of institutional support for disabled persons in Poland. According to the main thesis of the article, complexities produced by the institutional systems and putting the burden of reducing it on the disabled persons themselves is an important mechanism of discrimination. Additionally, the basic problems related to the effectiveness of institutional support result from lack of competence in the institutional system’s dealing with the complexity of the phenomenon of disability. An empirical illustration of the thesis is drawn from the data gathered during 60 interviews and 2 workshops, conducted with the experts in the field of disability. The analysis not only contributes new theoretical insights to the reflection on disability, but it also indicates the direction of desirable developments in social policy.

One may hear that over time languages tend to simplify their grammar and notably their morphological system. This intuition, probably based on linguists’ knowledge of the rich inflectional systems of older Indo-European languages, has been challenged, particularly by sociolinguistic typologists (e.g. Trudgill 2011; Braunmuller 1984, 2003; Nichols 1992). They hypothesise that languages spoken by small and isolated communities with a dense network may complexify their grammar (Trudgill 2011: 146-147). The present article investigates the nominal inflection systems of 14 varieties of German in order to survey whether there is any such diachronic tendency towards simplification and whether instances of complexification can be observed, too. The varieties under analysis include present-day Standard German, Old High German and Middle High German (two older stages of German) and eleven present-day non-standard varieties which make part of the Alemannic dialect group. First, it will be shown that there is a diachronic tendency towards simplification if we consider the total complexity of nominal inflection. Second, however, we can identify instances of diachronic complexification too if we take a closer look at single categories. Interestingly, diachronic complexification appears only in the non-standard varieties, not so in the standard variety. This may support the hypothesis that isolated varieties are more complex than non-isolated ones.

Opis:
The discussion on the complexity of natural language is a fascinating topic that has been treated by scholars from different philosophical and theoretical perspectives. The main challenge to overcome when studying complexity is represented by its quantification: discussing complexity means dealing with objective measurements. Since languages are systems, i.e. they are made up of elements, it is possible to examine the structural complexity of a language by counting the elements present in the system. Systems (that is, languages) are in turn made of sub-systems (that is, areas), each sub-system being described by a series of features whose inventory sizes can be, for example, relatively small, relatively large, or average. This paper aims at formulating an Index of Phonological Complexity (IPC) based on the typological features covering the phonological area as defined in the World Atlas of Language Structures (WALS). After a brief discussion on these features, their recoding and subsequently their normalisation to a common scale will be argued for. Then, three indexes of phonological complexity will be proposed and applied to West African languages. Given its high degree of linguistic diversity determined by both genetic and typological variety, West Africa is an interesting ground for measuring complexity as well as a promising laboratory for further calibration and refinement of the indexes.

One of the mathematical tools to measure the generation rate of new patterns along a sequence of symbols is the Lempel-Ziv complexity (LZ). Under additional assumptions, LZ is an estimator of entropy in the Shannon sense. Since entropy is considered as a measure of randomness, this means that LZ can be treated also as a randomness indicator. In this paper, we used LZ concept to the analysis of different flow regimes in cold flow combustor models. Experimental data for two combustor’s configurations motivated by efficient mixing need were considered. Extensive computer analysis was applied to develop a complexity approach to the analysis of velocity fluctuations recorded with hot-wire anemometry and PIV technique. A natural encoding method to address these velocity fluctuations was proposed. It turned out, that with this encoding the complexity values of the sequences are well correlated with the values obtained by means of RMS method (larger/smaller complexity larger/smaller RMS). However, our calculations pointed out the interesting result that most complex, this means most random, behavior does not overlap with the “most turbulent” point determined by the RMS method, but it is located in the point with maximal average velocity. It seems that complexity method can be particularly useful to analyze turbulent and unsteady flow regimes. Moreover, the complexity can also be used to establish other flow characteristics like its ergodicity or mixing.

A property of n-vertex graphs is called evasive if every algorithm testing this property by asking questions of the form “is there an edge between vertices u and v” requires, in the worst case, to ask about all pairs of vertices. Most “natural” graph properties are either evasive or conjectured to be such, and of the few examples of nontrivial nonevasive properties scattered in the literature the smallest one has n = 6. We exhibit a nontrivial, nonevasive property of 5-vertex graphs and show that it is essentially the unique such with n ≤ 5.

The contribution addresses a topic discussed since the 17th century by philosophers, logicians and lexicographers: to what extent does the semantic complexity of certain words convey knowledge of the extralinguistic world? What influence does this knowledge have on the coherence of a text? Conversely, another type of complexity must be taken into account as well, the one starting from things: what linguistic devices are adopted to express this complexity in an efficient way? The relationship between the complexity types and knowledge has been investigated by different strands of research in the humanities and is becoming a focus of multidisciplinary research.

Opis:
The modern economics is currently at a very interesting point in time, as explaining the phenomena occurring in the economy continues to increase the diversity of economics. Expression, both on the condition of the economics and the condition of the methodology of economics, tends to reflect on the reliability of the assumptions used so far, as well as the position of economics in the social sciences. As a result of the increase of available analytical instruments, the area covered by the economic analyses expands. Studies of the economy, including industry, currently require taking into account categories such as complexity, defined most simply as the complication of the relationship between the elements of the isolated system. The issue of complexity allows for the analysis of issues related to the industry as a reflection of the adaptive behavior of a complex system by introducing new research problems. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to new research possibilities in the problems of the industry, which are created through the concept of complexity.

The total rainbow connection number of a connected graph G, denoted by trc(G), is the smallest number of colors that are needed in a total-coloring of G in order to make G total rainbow connected, that is, any two vertices of G are connected by a total rainbow path. In this paper, we study the computational complexity of total rainbow connection of graphs. We show that deciding whether a given total-coloring of a graph G makes it total rainbow connected is NP-Complete. We also prove that given a graph G, deciding whether trc(G) = 3 is NP-Complete.

Artykuł reinterpretuje stosunek socjologii do zagadnienia złożoności świata społecznego w kategoriach ogólnej teorii systemów (ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem teorii systemów społecznych Niklasa Luhmanna).
The article grasps the relation of sociology towards the issue of social complexity in terms of the general systems theory (particularly – the theory of social systems by Niklas Luhmann). The analysis focuses on the intrasystemic process of complexity reduction. Hence the question: How sociology copes with the world’s complexity turns into the question: How sociology manages its own complexity. The category of ‘research style’ inspired by the theories of Harrison White, Pierre Bourdieu and Ludwik Fleck is introduced for a preliminary analysis of the question. The three dominant research styles within sociology are distinguished: textual, survey and identity style. None of them, as the author argues, facilitates the management of sociology’s complexity.

He claims that many misunderstandings in political science, including inaccurate predictions as well as real-time-analysis, are caused by lack of precise theory of international systems within international relations as well as failure to adapt some concepts regarding systems from General System Theory, Cybernetics, Chaos Theory and Catastrophy Theory (or paradigm of complexity as a whole), that seem to be used with success in other disciplines like biology or physics. The author proposes five essential dimensions where structure of the system could be successfully measured. He argues that systemic approach based on various theories concerning complexity can lead to resolving some essential questions concerning the nature of the system with the most important one concerning mechanisms at various levels of the system, need to be answered.

The main objective of the research work was to identify the dimensions of complexity and study the relationship between these defined dimensions in the industrial automation sector. To achieve these objectives in the study, there was assumed the following major hypothesis: With the increasing role of dynamic cross-section of the complexity there is growing importance of relationship dimension for competitive advantage. In the study there were diagnosed four dimensions of complexity. Existence of the relationship between these four identified dimensions of complexity occurred by the use of the Fisher’s exact test, which is a variant of the test of independence χ2. Furthermore, there were calculated V-Cramer factors to estimate the intensity of the above-mentioned relationship between analyzed dimensions. The research discovered that the three out of four dimensions such as the number of elements, variety of elements and uncertainty depend on the last dimension of complexity which is the relationship between elements. In the turbulent environment there is a growing importance of the relationship dimension. It forms competitive advantage and is a key condition of success in creating a new type of modern enterprise strategy that occurs within complexity management in the industrial automation sector.

This study aims to explore the missing link between English textbooks used in high schools (9th-12th grades) and English university entrance exams (2010-2019) in Turkey on lexical and syntactic complexity levels by using corpus linguistics tools: AntWordProfiler, TAALED, and the L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer (L2SCA). Official textbooks and complementary materials obtained from the Ministry of National Education have been compared against the official university entrance exams from the past decade. The results show that: (i) differences in lexical sophistication level can be observed between the two corpora, the lexical sophistication level of the exam corpus was higher than that of the textbook corpus, (ii) there is a statistically significant difference between the two corpora in terms of lexical diversity, the exam corpus has a significantly higher level of lexical diversity than the textbook corpus, (iii) statistically significant differences also existed between the two corpora regarding the syntactic complexity indices. The syntactic complexity level of the exam corpus was higher than that of the textbook corpus. The findings suggest that Turkish high school students who have to learn English with the official textbooks throughout their high school years will have to tackle low-frequency and more sophisticated words at a higher level of  syntactic complexity at the time of taking the nationwide exam. This, in return, creates a negative backwash effect, distorts their approach to L2, and raises other concerns about the misalignment between the official language education materials and nationwide exams.

Let G be a graph with vertex set V(G), δ (G) minimum degree of G and [formula]. Given a nonempty set M ⊆ V(G) a vertex v of G is said to be k-controlled by M if [formula] where δM(v) represents the number of neighbors of v in M. The set M is called an open k-monopoly for G if it fc-controls every vertex v of G. In this short note we prove that the problem of computing the minimum cardinality of an open k-monopoly in a graph for a negative integer k is NP-complete even restricted to chordal graphs.

Given graphs G and H, a mapping f:V(G) → V(H) is a homomorphism if (f(u),f(v)) is an edge of H for every edge (u,v) of G. In this paper, we initiate the study of computational complexity of locally injective homomorphisms called partial covers of graphs. We motivate the study of partial covers by showing a correspondence to generalized (2,1)-colorings of graphs, the notion stemming from a practical problem of assigning frequencies to transmitters without interference. We compare the problems of deciding existence of partial covers and of full covers (locally bijective homomorphisms), which were previously studied.

Opis:
Spoken and written language are two modes of language. When learners aim at higher skill levels, the expected outcome of successful second language learning is usually to become a fluent speaker and writer who can produce accurate and complex language in the target language. There is an axiomatic difference between speech and writing, but together they form the essential parts of learners’ L2 skills. The two modes have their own characteristics, and there are differences between native and nonnative language use. For instance, hesitations and pauses are not visible in the end result of the writing process, but they are characteristic of nonnative spoken language use. The present study is based on the analysis of L2 English spoken and written productions of 18 L1 Finnish learners with focus on syntactic complexity. As earlier spoken language segmentation units mostly come from fluency studies, we conducted an experiment with a new unit, the U-unit, and examined how using this unit as the basis of spoken language segmentation affects the results. According to the analysis, written language was more complex than spoken language. However, the difference in the level of complexity was greatest when the traditional units, T-units and AS-units, were used in segmenting the data. Using the U-unit revealed that spoken language may, in fact, be closer to written language in its syntactic complexity than earlier studies had suggested. Therefore, further research is needed to discover whether the differences in spoken and written learner language are primarily due to the nature of these modes or, rather, to the units and measures used in the analysis.

Opis:
This article begins by examining previous empirical studies to demonstrate that language anxiety, or the negative emotional reaction learners experience when using a second language (MacIntyre & Gardner, 1999), is a dynamic individual difference learner variable. I show that it forms part of an interconnected, constantly-in-flux system that changes unpredictably over multiple time scales. While at certain times this system might settle into an attractor state that accommodates contradictory conditions, perturbations that arise may lead to development and change with the curious possibility that minor disruptions generate large effects while major alterations go unnoticed. In essence, language anxiety (LA) is part of a continuous complex system in which each state evolves from a previous one. After I establish LA as a dynamic variable using the aforementioned criteria, I outline the implications and challenges for researching LA using a dynamic paradigm, which include focusing on individuals, transforming LA research questions, designing interventions and re-thinking data gathering methodologies. I conclude with implications for language teaching that emphasize: 1) raising awareness of the importance of decoding nonverbal behavior to identify moment-by-moment shifts in learner emotion; 2) remaining vigilant concerning variables that are interacting with LA that make this factor part of a cyclical process; 3) understanding that anxiety co-exists with positive emotions to varying degrees and that language tasks are not unanimously enjoyed or universally anxiety-provoking; and 4) incorporating positive psychology activities that proactively encourage buoyancy and resilience for moment-by-moment daily perturbations as well as debilitating disruptions that result in long-lasting influences.

In the present investigation, 15 first term university students were faced with 80 context-based idioms in English (L2) and Swedish (L1) respectively, 30 of which were in the source domain of animals, commonly used in both languages, and asked to explain their meaning. The idioms were of varying frequency and transparency. Three main research questions were thus addressed:1. How well do students master idioms in their L2 as compared to their L1?2. How do (a) degrees of transparency, (b) idiom frequency and (c) the choice of source domain affect students’ L1 and L2 comprehension?3. To what extent is context used when interpreting L1 and L2 idioms? Results show that while the frequency of an idiom does not appear to play a part in whether it is comprehended or not in either language, the degree of transparency is of great importance in students’ L2. Also, students make extensive use of context in their L2.

This paper presents the results from two different experiments carried out independently with two different groups of students using the same materials and the same methodology, with the aim to check whether oral translation, if applied as a main teaching technique, can foster the development of the accuracy component of language proficiency. The experiments were carried out at the International Centre for Plurilingualism at the University of Udine with two experimental groups over a period of three years. Apart from providing a positive answer to the research question, the results show that the whole training can be carried out as part of the in-class activities and is independent of factors of personal character like the amount of time a student dedicates to the L2 learning at home, his or her willingness to put him/herself to work and even, to a large extent, independent of the student’s mother tongue or previous contacts with the foreign language. Since the main goal is the rapid memorization of the lexical and grammar material inside a context, the present technique suggests itself as a promising teaching tool in any lexically specialized field of L2 study.

We report that both space and time, in which a system of interacting cells exists, possess fractal structure. Each single cell of the system can restore the hierarchical organization and dynamic features of the entire tumor. There is a relationship between dynamics of gene expression and connectivity (i.e., interconnectedness which denotes the existence of complex, dynamic relationships in a population of cells leading to the emergence of global features in the system that would never appear in a single cell existing out of the system). Fractal structure emerges owing to non-bijectivity of dynamic cellular network of genes and their regulatory elements. It disappears during tumor progression. This latter state is characterized by damped dynamics of gene expression, loss of connectivity, loss of collectivity (i.e., capability of the interconnected cells to interact in a common mode), and metastatic phenotype. Fractal structure of both space and time is necessary for a cellular system to self-organize. Our findings indicate that results of molecular studies on gene expression should be interpreted in terms of space-time geometry of the cellular system. In particular, the dynamics of gene expression in cancer cells existing in a malignant tumor is not identical with the dynamics of gene expression in the same cells cultured in the monolayer system.

Purpose: We propose and test a new leadership model. Our model is an extension of the leaderplex model which proposes that leader cognitive and social complexities are linked with leader effec tiveness indirectly, in a mediation scheme, through behavioral complexity. We enhance the leader plex model with a leader’s degree of managerial discretion as the moderator of the links in this mediation format. Methodology: We test our model with a moderated mediation approach (Baron-Kenny four-step procedure and Preacher-Hayes bootstrapping methods). Findings: We use results of interviews with top leaders in Poland and demonstrate that a leader’s managerial discretion is a moderator affecting the mediation scheme assumed in the leaderplex model. Limitations: The sample size is only 29 leaders. To preserve the respondents’ anonymity, their opinions were evaluated by only one researcher who interviewed them directly. The results may be country specific (Poland). Originality: We define new boundary conditions for the leaderplex model by showing importance of a leader’s real position (managerial discretion) in an organization. Specifically, we show that the nature of the relationships between the variables of interest will change when a leader operates in one physical environment (e.g., high managerial discretion) rather than another (e.g., low managerial discretion). null

Research on cross-linguistic differences in morphological paradigms reveals a wide range of variation on many dimensions, including the number of categories expressed, the number of unique forms, and the number of inflectional classes. However, in an influential paper, Ackerman and Malouf (2013) argue that there is one dimension on which languages do not differ widely: in predictive structure. Predictive structure in a paradigm describes the extent to which forms predict each other, called i-complexity. Ackerman and Malouf (2013) show that although languages differ according to measure of surface paradigm complexity, called e-complexity, they tend to have low i-complexity. They conclude that morphological paradigms have evolved under a pressure for low i-complexity. Here, we evaluate the hypothesis that language learners are more sensitive to i-complexity than e-complexity by testing how well paradigms which differ on only these dimensions are learned. This could result in the typological findings Ackerman and Malouf (2013) report if even paradigms with very high e-complexity are relatively easy to learn, so long as they have low i-complexity. First, we summarize a recent work by Johnson et al. (2020) suggesting that both neural networks and human learners may actually be more sensitive to e-complexity than i-complexity. Then we build on this work, reporting a series of experiments which confirm that, indeed, across a range of paradigms that vary in either e- or icomplexity, neural networks (LSTMs) are sensitive to both, but show a larger effect of e-complexity (and other measures associated with size and diversity of forms). In human learners, we fail to find any effect of i-complexity on learning at all. Finally, we analyse a large number of randomly generated paradigms and show that e- and i-complexity are negatively correlated: paradigms with high e-complexity necessarily show low i-complexity. We discuss what these findings might mean for Ackerman and Malouf’s hypothesis, as well as the role of ease of learning versus generalization to novel forms in the evolution of paradigms.

This paper addresses the issue how to strike a good balance between accuracy and compactness in classification systems - still an important question in machine learning and data mining. The fuzzy rule-based classification approach proposed in current paper exploits the method of rule granulation for error reduction and the method of rule consolidation for complexity reduction. The cooperative nature of those methods - the rules are split in a way that makes efficient rule consolidation feasible and rule consolidation itself is capable of further error reduction - is demonstrated in a number of experiments with nine benchmark classification problems. Further complexity reduction, if necessary, is provided by rule compression.

Resilience is a relatively new conceptual category used when considering security and defence. It means adaptability, resistance to threats, flexibility of response, and the ability to regenerate. The term resilience has been present in English for a long time, as evidenced by the presence of this term in old dictionaries of the English language. Originally, its meaning related to medicine and mechanics, a bit later – to human psychology, and today it has extended to the issues of resilience of cities, societies, and entire countries. An attempt at applying this new conceptualisation is associated with the recognition that the current security paradigm is losing its relevance in a rapidly changing and complex world. The changing scale of threats makes it necessary to search for new theoretical foundations for creating an effective defence policy. However, the theory of resilience has not yet been fully formulated, at best, only its theorem has. The aim of this article is to present the significance of this conceptual category, to indicate the theoretical concepts underlying this conceptualisation in social sciences, and to reflect on the value of the concept of resilience for security and defence.

In our previous work we proved the conjecture NP = PSPACE by advanced proof theoretic methods that combined Hudelmaier’s cut-free sequent calculus for minimal logic (HSC) with the horizontal compressing in the corresponding minimal Prawitz-style natural deduction (ND). In this Addendum we show how to prove a weaker result NP = coNP without referring to HSC. The underlying idea (due to the second author) is to omit full minimal logic and compress only “naive” normal tree-like ND refutations of the existence of Hamiltonian cycles in given non-Hamiltonian graphs, since the Hamiltonian graph problem in NPcomplete. Thus, loosely speaking, the proof of NP = coNP can be obtained by HSC-elimination from our proof of NP = PSPACE.

A vertex k-ranking of a simple graph is a coloring of its vertices with k colors in such a way that each path connecting two vertices of the same color contains a vertex with a bigger color. Consider the minimum vertex ranking spanning tree (MVRST) problem where the goal is to find a spanning tree of a given graph G which has a vertex ranking using the minimal number of colors over vertex rankings of all spanning trees of G. K. Miyata et al. proved in [NP-hardness proof and an approximation algorithm for the minimum vertex ranking spanning tree problem, Discrete Appl. Math. 154 (2006) 2402-2410] that the decision problem: given a simple graph G, decide whether there exists a spanning tree T of G such that T has a vertex 4-ranking, is NP-complete. In this paper we improve this result by proving NP-hardness of finding for a given chordal graph its spanning tree having vertex 3-ranking. This bound is the best possible. On the other hand we prove that MVRST problem can be solved in linear time for proper interval graphs.

The awareness of the growing importance of the complexity in creating a new type of a modern enterprise strategy and in introducing changes within planning, control and organizational structures contributed to undertaking studies on relationships occurring between the complexity of a modern enterprise and its flexibility in the sector of industrial automation, as well as filling the gap relating to the cognitive impact of poor complexity management on the flexibility of the company. The main objective of the research work is to check whether there is an important relationship between the complexity of the business and its flexibility in the industrial automation sector. Quantification of the relationship between these two quantities – the complexity and flexibility – happened by the use of the Multidimensional Correspondence Analysis (MCA) and Perceptual Maps. The study which has been carried out indicated that the flexibility and complexity functions in the enterprise management rise, however, the knowledge of these issues is highly insufficient. The research discovered that the obstacles which hamper striking a balance between the flexibility and complexity in their advanced stages exert a devastating impact on the quality of the process management. Reducing the flexibility at its higher levels generates a context in which the market risk is enhanced. Companies characterised by improper flexibility management bear higher workforce costs and their processes of decision-making last longer. Methodical and systematized study of flexibility and complexity will decrease the destructive influence of the interaction between these two categories.

In a letter published on March 30, 2021, 24 world leaders have called for global solidarity in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. This commitment to act in solidarity with low-income countries however was won under duress, and it was in part at least self-serving. Can this still be called solidarity? On the basis of a functional view on solidarity the paper argues that states can indeed act in solidarity, if they accept costs to assist others with whom they recognize similarity in a relevant respect. States can act in solidarity, or they can fail to act in solidarity, also in situations of duress and if solidary acts also serve their own interests. The paper concludes that if this is true for the Covid-19 pandemic it is also true for the climate crisis, where damage of even much bigger dimensions are to be prevented. Also in regard to anthropogenic global heating, nobody is safe until everyone is safe.

This paper proposes a methodology based on system connections to calculate its complexity. Two study cases are proposed: the dining Chinese philosophers’ problem and the distribution center. Both studies are modeled using the theory of Discrete Event Systems and simulations in different contexts were performed in order to measure their complexities. The obtained results present i) the static complexity as a limiting factor for the dynamic complexity, ii) the lowest cost in terms of complexity for each unit of measure of the system performance and iii) the output sensitivity to the input parameters. The associated complexity and performance measures aggregate knowledge about the system.

The aims of this article are: 1) to offer a deeper and more theoretically grounded understanding of the dysfunctions of the institutional support system for people with disabilities in Poland; and 2) to propose inspirations for a new, ‚agile’ disability policy. To this end the author applies concepts from Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social systems and its more recent interpretations, as well as ideas from so-called complexity theory. It is shown that the dysfunctions of the institutional system can be interpreted as resulting from the system’s autopoiesis and insensitivity to the complexity of the environment. Yet, as the system/environment relationship is precarious, the system could be motivated to redefine itself and to implement solutions that would make it more responsive to the environment. It is argued that an agile disability policy, based on the assumption that complexity is a crucial environmental feature, could be a solution to this problem.

The speed of sound (SoS) in tissues reflects their mechanical properties and therefore can carry valuable diagnostic information. In conventional ultrasound sonography (US), however, this information is not readily available. Furthermore, since the actual SoS is unknown, image reconstruction is carried out using an average SoS value for soft tissues. The resulting local deviations from the actual SoS lead to aberrations in US images. Methods for SoS imaging in US therefore have the potential to enable the correction of aberrations in classical US. In addition, they could also become a new US modality. There are several approaches to SoS image reconstruction. They differ in terms of input data requirements, computational complexity, imaging quality, and the potential for signal analysis at the intermediate stages of processing. This article presents an algorithm with multi-stage processing and low computational complexity. The algorithm was verified through numerical simulations and phantom measurements. The obtained results show that it can correctly estimate SoS in layered media, which in most cases model the tissue structure well. With its computational complexity of O(n), the algorithm can be implemented in real-time ultrasound imaging systems with limited hardware performance, such as portable ultrasound devices.

In the up to date competition, the optimal degree of complexity severely influences the success of distribution networks and therefore the success of the entire company. Nevertheless, it seems that up to now, limited research has been done on distribution network complexity. Therefore, this paper deals with current theoretical and practical approaches of complexity management in distribution networks. Methodologically, first an in-depth literature review is conducted, highlighting the existing complexity handling tools in different areas. Since this analysis shows that no approach specifically copes with the requirements of distribution networks, exploratory expert interviews are carried out. Comparing the findings shows that neither literature, nor industrial practice investigate or institutionalize complexity management in distribution networks. Thus, this paper provides opportunities to close this gap. On the one hand, a framework which can be used to elaborate suitable complexity management strategies for distribution networks is presented. On the other hand, the relevant areas of distribution networks are narrowed down in order to create a basis for developing a comprehensive method for complexity management in distribution systems.

The situation on all kinds of financial markets is determined by their increasing complexity. Negotiation of sovereign debt is also a complex endeavor. Its complexity results both from structural characteristics – number of actors, problems of coordination, communication, cooperation and conflict and from cognitive limitations. The survey of literature on sovereign debt management shows that no research has been done on complexity of sovereign debt management, and sovereign debt negotiation in particular. The aim of the paper is to provide initial framework concepts of complexity of sovereign debt restructuring negotiation referring to a universal collection of characteristics of negotiation. A model of debt restructuring negotiation is elaborated and a set of its complexity- related characteristics is proposed.

Opis:
In the evaluation of geomorphic effects of extreme rainfalls equally important are their temporal diversity and spatial distribution of rainfall and water circulation. Three main types of extreme rainfalls (heavy downpours, continuous rains and rainy seasons differ not only in the duration and totals but especially in their intensity. The recognition of these parameters and their relation to features of substratum (permeability, infiltration rate, groundwater storage) help to calculate the thresholds for erosional and gravitational processes. The recognition of only daily rainfall and lithology of deeper substratum is not enough. The equally important is the delimitation of spatial extend of extreme rainfall, what in case of very sparsly distributed raingauge network is possible to reconstruct by a ground survey of geomorphic effects. These questions are examplied by events from last decades. The counteraction to the effects of heavy rains and floods depend on various parameters and different measures may be undertaken. In closing chapter the author propose typology of floods which may have practical value in counteractions and forecasting.

Effectively optimizing dilation and erosion is an extensively studied but not completely resolved problem. In this paper, a new optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the efficiency of dilation and erosion. Four notions are given to define the edges for any simply connected structuring element (SE). An assistant algorithm is proposed to detect these edges. Based on these notions, three iteration equations can be derived, which redefine dilation and erosion as iteration calculation. Time complexity of the new algorithm is reduced to O(n³). In addition, the new algorithm is suitable for online applications without the decomposition of SE. Simulation shows that with the same parameters, the performance of the new algorithm is better than that of Yang's algorithm.

The current paper aims to compare the complexity of texts translated into English-based creole languages and English. The main motivation for the choice of topic was the growing body of evidence that languages and language phenomena, such as texts, may be regarded as complex adaptable systems of signs. These systems may display some fractal properties, such as self-similarity at different scales. In consequence, texts may be analysed in the same manner as other fractal objects. It is possible, for instance, to estimate their fractal dimensions which, to some extent, reflect the degree of their structural complexity. Such an assumption enables one to calculate and compare fractal dimensions of parallel translations of texts to various languages in order to compare their complexity levels. Methods which enable comparisons of complexity of texts in different languages are particularly important with regard to creole languages, since the complexity of contact languages is still the subject of debate. In the following study, ten parallel translations of passages from the New Testament were mapped onto time series plots based on the length and the frequency rank of words. The values of Hurst exponent as well as fractal dimension were estimated and it was found that the studied time series did not differ significantly between English and English-based creoles with respect to their fractal dimensions. The results lend support to the idea that creole languages are simply new languages which are merely different from their superstrate language rather than being less complex, at least with regard to their lexical patterns.

Notwithstanding the primacy of the CV syllable, a number of languages allow for more complex types of syllables. In particular, word-initial consonant clusters are particularly challenging for any phonological theory. In this paper it is argued that obstruent clusters may be the result of casual speech processes where the most salient/ frequent phonemes and features occurring in most pronunciation variants of a word are preserved. As a result, sibilants, being acoustically salient, tend to occur more often than other obstruents as the first member of word-initial obstruent clusters. A framework couched in Optimality Theory is presented, where a subfamily of faithfulness constraints refer to strength values stored in the underlying representation. The more salient and/or frequent a phoneme/feature is, the higher the strength value assigned to it. Finally, a number of languages are compared, arguing that their phonotactic differences may be due to the different ranking of markedness constraints and MAX-STRENGTHVALUE constraints.

In audiovisual translation, stylometry can be used to measure formal-aesthetic fidelity. We present a corpus-based measure of syntactic complexity as a feature of language style. The methodology considers hierarchical dimensions of syntactic complexity, using syllable counting and dependency parsing. The test material are dialogues of several characters from the TV show “Two and a Half Men”. The results show that characters do not differ syntactically among themselves as much as might be expected, and that, despite a general tendency to level differences even more in translation, the changes in syntactic complexity between the original and translation depend mostly on the respective character-feature combination.

The aim of this paper is to enhance our understanding of evolution of the concept of competitiveness: how it developed and changed over time. The intention is to review three theoretical and practical reasons that explains why it remains such an important and elusive concept in the same time. First, competitive advantage in particular area or activity will always coexist with relative competitive disadvantage of an organization. Second, organizations can attain competitive advantage in many different ways, also by luck, and it is very difficult empirically to differentiate one from another. Third, many of the complications in studies of organizational competitiveness are results of growing multidimensionality, complexity and fuzziness of organizationenvironment relationships.

Poszukiwanie mechanizmów harmonizujących i stabilizujących procesy ekonomiczne prowadziło do stawiania praktycznego problemu znajdowania, stabilności i jednoznaczności równowagi jako głównego obszaru badań (stabilizacja równowagi w systemie).
The central problem in mainstream economics was in particular the search for mechanisms harmonizing and stabilizing economic processes (the invisible hand of the market). This led to the practical problem of finding, stability and uniqness of the equlibrium as the main area of research (stabilization of the system). The study of the states of equilibrium is important and interesting, but it should not concern mainly the conditions of existence and uniqueness. The possibility of positive feedback in the economic system generates two new problems, such as multiple equilibrium and dynamics (evolution) of the economic system. These are two important effects of the economic system’s reaction to changes (shocks) in conditions of instability. The aim of the article is to present the problems of multiple equilibria and the concepts of complexity economics in contemporary literature on the subject.

The present paper demonstrates that insights from the affordances perspective can contribute to developing a more comprehensive model of grammaticalization. The authors argue that the grammaticalization process is afforded differently depending on the values of three contributing parameters: the factor (schematized as a qualitative-quantitative map or a wave of a gram), environment (understood as the structure of the stream along which the gram travels), and actor (narrowed to certain cognitive-epistemological capacities of the users, in particular to the fact of being a native speaker). By relating grammaticalization to these three parameters and by connecting it to the theory of optimization, the proposed model offers a better approximation to realistic cases of grammaticalization: The actor and environment are overtly incorporated into the model and divergences from canonical grammaticalization paths are both tolerated and explicable.

The general trend in language education over the years has been to ascribe to language learners increasing power and responsibility for their own learning. While this is commendable, the autonomy of learners is still constrained by views of language that see learners as being mere “hosts” of another’s language. Such views restrict learners to roles as language learners who make errors not language users who innovate. This article argues for a more enlightened view of language and of learners, one inspired by a complexity theory perspective. It also proposes that such a perspective is respectful of learner agency.

Przedmiotem badań jest dokonanie pomiaru złożoności schematów aplikacyjnych UML i GML opracowanych w Głównym Urzędzie Geodezji i Kartografii w zakresie prac związanych z implementacją dyrektywy INSPIRE w Polsce.
Implementation of the INSPIRE Directive in Poland and construction of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure have caused a significant increase of interest in making spatial data and services available, particularly among public administration and private institutions. This entailed a series of initiatives that aim to harmonise different spatial data sets, so to ensure their logical and semantic coherence. The process of harmonisation requires either working out new data structures or adjusting existing spatial data structures to the INSPIRE guidelines and recommendations. Data structures are described with the use of UML and GML application schemas. Incorrect or too complex data structures have direct influence on the ability to generate GML data sets with concrete data (objects), and thereby can cause various problems and anomalies at the data production stage. The principal subject of this research is to measure complexity of UML and GML application schemas prepared in the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography in Poland within the INSPIRE Directive implementation works. It is also assumed to analyse existing complexity measures of XML Schemas and to examine a possibility to use various tools to measure complexity of data structures expressed in UML and GML (XML Schema).

Consonant clusters appear either lexically within morphemes or morphonotactically across morpheme boundaries. According to extant theories, their diachronic dynamics are suggested to be determined by analogical effects on the one hand as well as by their morphological signaling function on the other hand. This paper presents a mathematical model which allows for an investigation of the interaction of these two forces and the resulting diachronic dynamics. The model is tested against synchronic and diachronic language data. It is shown that the evolutionary dynamics of the cluster inventory crucially depend on how the signaling function of morphonotactic clusters is compromised by the presence of lexical items containing their morpheme internal counterparts.

Część pierwsza tekstu stanowi wprowadzenie do rozważań. Ostatnia część to podsumowanie pracy.
Contemporary research into the theory of international trade focuses on introducing new qualitative, structural and institutional aspects. One of the topics that seems to be gaining popularity is the issue of the complexity of bundles of exported goods, its determinants, and the effects it has on other elements of national economies. This paper is devoted to the problem because it is still unexplored by the Polish literature. The first section serves as an introduction. The second one contains a survey of literature on the significance of complexity for the economy, especially economic growth and structural transformations. The third section presents the determinants of complexity. The fourth one presents modern trends of complexity distribution among countries and groups of goods. The final section provides a conclusion to the discussion.

A driver’s mental and physical states while driving on hazardous roads significantly determine the incident of traffic accident. The objectives of this paper are to analyze the impact of road complexity on the psychophysiological load experienced by drivers through the use of Electroencephalography (EEG). Three conditions were examined through driving simulation, namely motorway, rural road, and city road. The data were collected from three respondents (drivers) who had different driving experiences, including < 3 years, 3 to 5 years, and > 5 years. Besides, each respondent would go through two tests with different situations: a normal situation and interfered situation (noises). The tool used was Emotive EPOC neuroheadset with 5 channels (electrode) which represent brain parts, such as the frontal (AF3 and AF4), temporal (T7 and T8), and parietal/occipital Pz. The simulation test results show that the beta signal for the motorway road situation in the occipital lobe, which functioned as visual, is more dominant compared to electrodes in other parts. Meanwhile, data from the rural road and the city road indicate a strong signal of emotions and visuals. In addition, based on the metrics performance result, the drivers’ level of stress reached its highest on the city road, as much as 45, followed by the rural road = 44 and the motorway = 42. While for the concentration index, the city road achieved 47, the rural road = 50 and the motorway = 53. EEG can be used as the basis for drivers performance assessment within different road situations so that the alert system for drivers can be engineered better.

Let G = (V, E) be a simple, undirected and connected graph. A connected dominating set S ⊆ V is a secure connected dominating set of G, if for each u ∈ V \ S, there exists v ∈ S such that (u, v) ∈ E and the set (S \ {v}) ∪ {u} is a connected dominating set of G. The minimum size of a secure connected dominating set of G denoted by γsc(G), is called the secure connected domination number of G. Given a graph G and a positive integer k, the Secure Connected Domination (SCDM) problem is to check whether G has a secure connected dominating set of size at most k. In this paper, we prove that the SCDM problem is NP-complete for doubly chordal graphs, a subclass of chordal graphs. We investigate the complexity of this problem for some subclasses of bipartite graphs namely, star convex bipartite, comb convex bipartite, chordal bipartite and chain graphs. The Minimum Secure Connected Dominating Set (MSCDS) problem is to find a secure connected dominating set of minimum size in the input graph. We propose a (∆(G)+1)-approximation algorithm for MSCDS, where (G) is the maximum degree of the input graph G and prove that MSCDS cannot be approximated within (1 − ɛ) ln(|V|) for any ɛ > 0 unless NP ⊆ DTIME |V|O(log log |V|)) even for bipartite graphs. Finally, we show that the MSCDS is APX-complete for graphs with Δ(G) = 4.

Brualdi and Quinn Massey [6] defined incidence colouring while studying the strong edge chromatic index of bipartite graphs. Here we introduce a similar concept for digraphs and define the oriented incidence chromatic number. Using digraph homomorphisms, we show that the oriented incidence chromatic number of a digraph is closely related to the chromatic number of the underlying simple graph. This motivates our study of the oriented incidence chromatic number of symmetric complete digraphs. We give upper and lower bounds for the oriented incidence chromatic number of these graphs, as well as digraphs arising from common graph constructions and decompositions. Additionally we construct, for all k > 2, a target digraph Hk for which oriented incidence k colouring is equivalent to homomorphism to Hk.

W przypadku badania odbioru dzieł sztuki taka operacja prowadzi do naruszenia struktury samego dzieła i rodzi problemy metodologiczne.
The article describes a method of analyzing the degree of complexity of images. Modification of images is often necessary when they differ with respect to statistical image properties such as complexity for instance. However, when it comes to studies on perception of art, such intervention might violate the actual structure of an artwork leading to severe methodological issues. We propose a different approach i.e. application of a coefficient aimed to control for unwanted effects of image complexity on eye movements. Present article describes the method of complexity coefficient calculation based on gradient counting for each pixel of an image. This approach might be useful in many studies that employ eyetracking to complex stimuli.

In this correspondence an efficient approach to structure of hardware accelerator for calculating the quotient of two complex-numbers with reduced number of underlying binary multipliers is presented. The fully parallel implementation of a complex-number division using the conventional approach to structure organization requires 4 multipliers, 3 adders, 2 squarers and 2 divider while the proposed structure requires only 3 multipliers, 6 adders, 2 squarers and 2 divider. Because the hardware complexity of a binary multiplier grows quadratically with operand size, and the hardware complexity of an binary adder increases linearly with operand size, then the complex-number divider structure containing as little as possible embedded multipliers is preferable.

That supply chain management and logistics are a determining factor for the long term success of a company was well documented by Forrester over a half century ago [1], with the importance of the statement only growing through the intervening years. Whether consciously factored into the operating mode or not, logistics and distribution channel management plays a critical role in the life, and death, of a firm. From the rudimentary beginnings of the start-up company to the hectic world of the growth company and onto the relatively secure existence in mature markets, the value chain consisting of logistics and distribution channel linkages follows the firm, until it solidifies into immutable form of the mature value chain and begins to exert an inexorable pressure on the survival of the entire chain, and conversely the chain imposes its will on the members. The emergence of mature industry value chains is often driven by the need to monopolistically control logistics and distribution channels which provides a competitive advantage but also introduces a serious exposure to pending shock loadings of the chain.

We upgrade [3] to a complete proof of the conjecture NP = PSPACE that is known as one of the fundamental open problems in the mathematical theory of computational complexity; this proof is based on [2]. Since minimal propositional logic is known to be PSPACE complete, while PSPACE to include NP, it suffices to show that every valid purely implicational formula ρ has a proof whose weight (= total number of symbols) and time complexity of the provability involved are both polynomial in the weight of ρ. As is [3], we use proof theoretic approach. Recall that in [3] we considered any valid ρ in question that had (by the definition of validity) a “short” tree-like proof π in the Hudelmaier-style cutfree sequent calculus for minimal logic. The “shortness” means that the height of π and the total weight of different formulas occurring in it are both polynomial in the weight of ρ. However, the size (= total number of nodes), and hence also the weight, of π could be exponential in that of ρ. To overcome this trouble we embedded π into Prawitz’s proof system of natural deductions containing single formulas, instead of sequents. As in π, the height and the total weight of different formulas of the resulting tree-like natural deduction ∂1 were polynomial, although the size of ∂1 still could be exponential, in the weight of ρ. In our next, crucial move, ∂1 was deterministically compressed into a “small”, although multipremise, dag-like deduction ∂ whose horizontal levels contained only mutually different formulas, which made the whole weight polynomial in that of ρ. However, ∂ required a more complicated verification of the underlying provability of ρ. In this paper we present a nondeterministic compression of ∂ into a desired standard dag-like deduction ∂0 that deterministically proves ρ in time and space polynomial in the weight of ρ.2 Together with [3] this completes the proof of NP = PSPACE.Natural deductions are essential for our proof. Tree-to-dag horizontal compression of π merging equal sequents, instead of formulas, is (possible but) not sufficient, since the total number of different sequents in π might be exponential in the weight of ρ – even assuming that all formulas occurring in sequents are subformulas of ρ. On the other hand, we need Hudelmaier’s cutfree sequent calculus in order to control both the height and total weight of different formulas of the initial tree-like proof π, since standard Prawitz’s normalization although providing natural deductions with the subformula property does not preserve polynomial heights. It is not clear yet if we can omit references to π even in the proof of the weaker result NP = coNP.

This article introduces a new measure of linguistic complexity which is based on the dual nature of the linguistic sign. Complexity is analyzed as consisting of three components, namely the conceptual complexity (complexity of the signified), the formal complexity (complexity of the signifier) and the form-meaning correspondence complexity. I describe a way of plotting the form-meaning relationship on a graph with two tiers (the form tier and the meaning tier) and apply a complexity measure from graph theory (average vertex degree) to assess the complexity of such graphs. The proposed method is illustrated by estimating the complexity of full noun phrases (determiner + adjective + noun) in English, Swedish, and German. I also mention the limitations and the problems which might arise when using this method.

A number of results have been obtained on this subject, principally devoted to understanding how wide the Phelp(C) and P1-help(C) classes are. For example, it seems that the Phelp(•) operator contracts NP ∩ coNP}, while the P1-help(•) operator enlarges UP. To better understand the relative power of P1-help(•) versus Phelp(•) we propose to search, for every relativizable class D containing P, the largest relativizable class C containing P such that for every oracle B PBhelp(CB)? PB1-help(DB). In the following paper: Cintioli P. and Silvestri R. 1997 Inf. Proc. In this paper we consider the case of D=UP ∩ coUP and demonstrate the existence of an oracle A for which PAhelp(UPA2 ∩ coUPA2) is not contained in PA1-help(UPA ∩ coUPA). We also prove that for every integer k ≥ 2 there exists an oracle A such that PAhelp(UPAk ∩ coUPAk) ? UPAk.

An $(f, g)$-semi-matching in a bipartite graph $ G = (U \cup V, E) $ is a set of edges $ M \subseteq E $ such that each vertex $ u \in U $ is incident with at most $f(u)$ edges of $M$, and each vertex $v \in V$ is incident with at most $g(v)$ edges of $M$. In this paper we give an algorithm that for a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, $n \leq m$, constructs a maximum $(f, g)$-semi-matching in running time $O(m \cdot $ $ min\{ \sqrt{\Sigma_{u \in U} f(u)}, $ $ \sqrt{ \Sigma_{v \in V} g(v) } \})$. Using the reduction of [5] our result on maximum $(f, g)$-semi-matching problem directly implies an algorithm for the optimal semi-matching problem with running time $ O( \sqrt{n} m \log n ) $.

Decomposition is the best method to analyze complicated systems. The whole system is divided into a set of smaller parts, i.e. subsystems. These items are connected to each other by input and output interfaces. Every subsystem could be analyzed using separate algorithms and procedures that are more suitable for solving the local task. In the article, a complicated electrical system is decomposed and the interaction decoupling mode is used to coordinate the local task solution. Each of the first–level subsystems, such as an optimization problem, is defined completely independently from the other problems. The subsystems are instructed to select the local input as well as the local interface output in an optimal fashion. The local task's solution depends not only on the internal subsystems’ parameters, but on the value of interfaces too. To achieve the global task solution, local tasks have to be coordinated using an appropriate coordination principle.

The volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment means growing challenges for companies. New ideas could be inspiring for managers who cope with complex problems. One of the fields within which academics look for solutions is nature. The mechanism behind immunology system could also bring some stimulants for managers’ thinking. The response towards a disturbance factor of the immune system is an inspiration for identifying a resistance system of the company. From the methodological point of view, the system approach constitutes a framework for building comparisons between two different research areas, respectively – immunology and the company. The external barriers subsystem, the non-specific defence subsystem, the fuzzy specificity subsystem and the target-oriented (specific) defence subsystem constitute the resistance system of the company. In business practice, the resistance system was analysed with reference to the activities of one of the small companies.

The physiological and psychological responses to environmental heat stress have been well established. However, in the tropical climate (i.e., hot: 31 ±2 °C and wet climatic environment: 75% ± 10% rH), that concerns millions of people, most studies deals with exercise: Aerobic exercise is negatively affected and the impact of this environment on cognition is unclear. This short communication reviews some studies using cognitive tasks realized in tropical climate or using environmental conditions leading heat stress. In agreement with the literature, it is suggested that, at school, office or university in tropical climates, it is preferable to study in air conditioning or naturally ventilated rooms than in hot and wet climatic conditions in order to reduce feelings of fatigue and thermal discomfort. Further investigations, using cooling or psychological training techniques are needed in order to try to limit the negatives effects of tropical climate on cognition.

This work concerns the evolving pattern of the lexical richness of the corpus text of China Government Work Report measured by entropy, based on a fundamental assumption that these texts are linguistically homogeneous. The corpus is interpreted and studied as a dynamic system, the components of which maintain spontaneous variations, adjustment, self-organizations, and adaptations to fit into the semantic, discourse, and sociolinguistic functions that the text is set to perform. Both the macroscopic structural trend and the microscopic fluctuations of the time series of the interested entropic process are meticulously investigated from the dynamic complexity theoretical perspective. Rigorous nonlinear regression analysis is provided throughout the study for empirical justifications to the theoretical postulations. An overall concave model with modulated fluctuations incorporated is proposed and statistically tested to represent the key quantitative findings. Possible extensions of the current study are discussed.

This paper presents a low multiplicative complexity fully parallel algorithm for multiplying two dual quaternions. The “pen-and-paper” multiplication of two dual quaternions requires 64 real multiplications and 56 real additions. More effective solutions still do not exist. We show how to compute a product of two dual quaternions with 24 real multiplications and 64 real additions. During synthesis of the discussed algorithm we use the fact that the product of two dual quaternions can be represented as a matrix–vector product. The matrix multiplicand that participates in the product calculating has unique structural properties that allow performing its advantageous factorization. Namely this factorization leads to significant reducing of the multiplicative complexity of dual quaternion multiplication. We show that by using this approach, the computational process of calculating dual quaternion product can be structured so that eventually requires only half the number of multipliers compared to the direct implementation of matrix-vector multiplication.

In this model the actual processing time of the jobs depends only on its position in a schedule and can be described by the piecewise linear function. For single-processor problem with introduced model, we show that the problem of minimizing the makespan criterion for independent jobs with release dates is strongly NP-hard, but some special cases of this problem are polynomially solvable. Based on those special cases, we propose 4 heuristic algorithms and we experimentally examine their usefulness for solving the general problem.

This paper presents a novel low-complexity soft demapping algorithm for two-dimensional non-uniform spaced constellations (2D-NUCs) and massive order one-dimensional NUCs (1D-NUCs). NUCs have been implemented in a wide range of new broadcasting systems to approach the Shannon limit further, such as DVB-NGH, ATSC 3.0 and NGB-W. However, the soft demapping complexity is extreme due to the substantial distance calculations. In the proposed scheme, the demapping process is classified into four cases based on different quadrants. To deal with the complexity problem, four groups of reduced subsets in terms of the quadrant for each bit are separately calculated and stored in advance. Analysis and simulation prove that the proposed demapper only introduces a small penalty under 0.02dB with respect to Max-Log-MAP demapper, whereas a significant complexity reduction ranging from 68.75% to 88.54% is obtained.

This study examined the effectiveness of implicit and explicit learning methods on the acquisition and retention of the decision-making skill in low and high complexity situations. 60 novice students were divided into explicit, implicit, and control group. Experimental groups followed 12 training courses. A pre-test, a post-test, and a retention test were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the instructional methods. All participants were evaluated in decision-making speed and accuracy in laboratory tests under simulated conditions. A three-way factorial ANOVA was conducted (3 Group X 2 Complexity X 3 Measurement periods) with repeated measurements on the last factor for the accuracy and reaction time. The analysis showed a significant improvement in decision-making accuracy, in low complexity for both experimental groups. In high complexity situations, the explicit method improved over time and was better than the implicit for decision accuracy. No differences were found among groups or measurements for the decision speed in either low or high complexity situations. It seems that in complex sport conditions, the use of explicit learning helps novices to develop decision-making accuracy more than the implicit learning method, since guided discovery may guide the participants to process contextual information from the sports environment more effectively.

The article is an analysis of a single case-a biographical narrative of a Tri-City resident who enters adulthood at the beginning of political transformation in 1989, and whose life path turns out to be an unintentional, dynamic journey between various professions, social worlds and structural positions. This creates a complicated and ambiguous biographical pattern which does not fall into either the socio-economic promotion of the “winner” or into the degradation of the transformation “loser.” The reconstruction of this pattern reveals the hero’s great resourcefulness and entrepreneurship, but also the fragility of the structures stabilizing his life and the volatility of life orientation points. The binder of this biography turns out to be, above all, reflexivity and, what I suggest calling, the narrative agency of the narrator, who can transform his structurally dispersed and chaotic life experiences of the time of transformation into a very original story, making him a strong subject of his own fate. This, however, creates the inevitable tension between the experienced or lived life, life history and the narrated life, life story, prompting us to again pose the question about the commonly assumed, although differently defined, correspondence between the level of reality and the level of its linguistic (in this case-autobiographical) representation.

Opis:
In the article, the author concentrates on the exploration of the nature of leadership behaviours and their impact on organisational performance in multinational enterprises (MNEs) in turbulent environments. The results of studies were to answer the following two questions. How and which leadership approach helps understand adaptive processes in an emerging environment? What are complex leadership behaviours of MNEs and how do they influence a successful organisational performance? The article begins with theoretical foundations for the perception of leadership in the light of assumptions resulting from the complexity theory. Then, the empirical context for deliberations, i.e. behaviours of international enterprises in the conditions of emerging markets, is presented. Relationships between leadership and results obtained by organisations were described on the basis of the quality attitude of the case study. The research sample included five small and medium-sized MNEs developing their business activity on emerging markets (EMs). The results exhibit two strategies of dealing with the complexity of phenomena, i.e. complexity reduction and complexity absorption. The aim of the first one is convergence, the latter one is divergent in a distinct way. Effectiveness in both cases requires different activities to combine the administrative and the adaptive functions of leadership. Moreover, in surveyed companies, depending on which leadership types were dominated, the organisations were inclined to develop their activities in different domains of the environment of the emerging market. These tendencies may, in short-term, suggest a possible direction of development of organisations.

For reliability allocation of a large scale series mechanical system composed of a great number of components, the component reliabilities allocated according to classical system reliability model are unrealistically high, even though the assigned target reliability for the system is quite low. Generally, the traditional system reliability model can not properly express the relationship between system reliability and component reliabilities, owing to the statistical dependence among component failures. For the same reason, system reliability can not be simply allocated to the individual components according to traditional system reliability model. Based on comprehensive analysis to the controlling factors for component failure dependence, the present paper introduces a new definition of system/subsystem complexity and component complexity, highlights load uncertainty dominated asperity and presents load roughness based principle for system reliability allocation. According to such a principle, system reliability requirement can be reasonably allocated to components, and totally determined at the level of component strength distribution.

Opis:
Hypersubstitutions are mappings which map operation symbols to terms. The set of all hypersubstitutions of a given type forms a monoid with respect to the composition of operations. Together with a second binary operation, to be written as addition, the set of all hypersubstitutions of a given type forms a left-seminearring. Monoids and left-seminearrings of hypersubstitutions can be used to describe complete sublattices of the lattice of all varieties of algebras of a given type. The complexity of a hypersubstitution can be measured by the complexity of the resulting terms. We prove that the set of all hypersubstitutions with a complexity greater than a given natural number forms a sub-left-seminearring of the left-seminearring of all hypersubstitutions of the considered type. Next we look to a special complexity measure, the operation symbol count op(t) of a term t and determine the greatest M-solid variety of semigroups where $M = H₂^{op}$ is the left-seminearring of all hypersubstitutions for which the number of operation symbols occurring in the resulting term is greater than or equal to 2. For every n ≥ 1 and for $M = Hₙ^{op}$ we determine the complete lattices of all M-solid varieties of semigroups.

Opis:
The concept of affordances originating in Gibson’s work (Gibson, 1977) is gaining ground in multilingualism studies (cf. Aronin and Singleton, 2010; Singleton and Aronin, 2007; Dewaele, 2010). Nevertheless, studies investigating affordances in respect of teaching, learning or using languages are still somewhat rare and tend to treat isolated aspects of multilingualism. This is despite the fact that the theory of affordances can actually provide a valuable, supplementary, up-to-date framework within which a clearer, sharper description and explication of the intriguing range of attributes of multilingual communities, educational institutions and individuals, as well as teaching practices, become feasible. It is important that not only researchers and practitioners (teachers, educators, parents, community and political actors) but also language users and learners themselves should be aware of how to identify or, if necessary, design new affordances for language acquisition and learning. The aim of this article is to adapt the concept of affordances to multilingualism studies and additional language teaching, and in so doing advance theoretical understanding in this context. To this end the article contains a brief summary of the findings so far available. The article also goes further into defining the ways of how affordances work in relation to multilingualism and second language teaching and puts forward an integrated model of affordances.

Opis:
For the anti-jamming purpose, high linear complexity is desired for each frequency hopping sequence in an optimal set. Using a proper power permutation, Wang has shown that an optimal set of frequency hopping sequences with small linear complexity can be transformed into a new optimal set of frequency hopping sequences with large linear complexity. This paper conains two results. First, we extend the result of Wang. A power permutation is only suitable for a special construction of optimal set of frequency hopping sequences, see Wang (2011). However, the power permutation chosen in this paper applies to the general construction of optimal set of frequency hopping sequences. Second, by using a binomial permutation polynomial P(x), which is different from those permutations used before, we obtain a novel optimal set of frequency hopping sequences with high linear complexity from an optimal set of frequency hopping sequences with small linear complexity. By counting the number of different roots in the sequence representation, we determine the linear complexities of the frequency hopping sequences in two optimal sets transformed by the power permutation or binomial permutation.

This article is focused on design of traditional historical domes. Outstanding works of architecture such as: the dome of Hagia Sophia, dome of the dome of the rock mosque, the dome of Florence Cathedral, the dome of Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, as well as less famous – Greek-Catholic Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Krowica Sama have been analyzed. According to the criterion of geometrical complexity we created the table in which the individual structures were systematized. The table also includes information on historical period, building materials, technology and dimensions for all examples. The paper aims to summarize the changes that took place in terms of how to construct and demonstrate the appropriateness of use of this type of solution, which led to the conclusion that each of new solutions is based on already existing one.

In this correspondence, we discuss two efficient algorithms for the execution of forward (FDMWT) and inverse (IDMWT) discrete multiwavelet transform basic operations with reduced computational complexities. We used multiwavelet basis proposed by Geronimo, Hadrin, and Massopust (GHM). The direct implementation of GHM-FDMWT basic operation requires 23 multiplications and 19 additions. The direct implementation of GHM-IDMWT basic operation requires 23 multiplication and 16 additions. At the same time, our solutions allow designing the computation procedures, which take only 10 multiplications plus 15 additions for GHM-FDMWT basic operation and 10 multiplications plus 10 additions for GHM-IDMWT basic operation
