The present research work deals with the quantification of toxic heavy metals in the water samples collected from sea water in Międzyzdroje. While the annual average concentration of Cadmium was calculated as 0.44 ppm in 2008 of the year and 0.46 ppm in 2009 of the year. The values obtained were found to be below the permissible limit of 2.0 ppm set for inland surface water. While the annual average concentration of Chromium was calculated as 2.67 ppm in 2008 of the year and 2.64 ppm in 2009 of the year. Which was very much above the permissible limit of 0.1 ppm set for inland surface water. The observed annual average concentration of Copper in the water was 0.08 ppm in 2008 of the year and 0.05 ppm in 2009 of the year, which was below the permissible limit of 3.0 ppm set for inland surface water. While the annual average concentration of Mercury was calculated as 0.05 ppm in 2008 of the year and 0.05 ppm in 2009 of the year, which was very much above the maximum limit of 0.01 ppm set for inland surface water. The annual average concentration of Nickel in the water samples was observed to be 2.47 ppm in 2008 of the year and 2.70 ppm in 2009 of the year, which is close to the limit of 3.0 ppm set for inland surface water. The annual average concentration of Lead in the water samples was observed to be 0.06 ppm in 2008 of the year and 0.05 ppm in 2009 of the year, which is above the permissible limit of 0.1 ppm set for inland surface water. The results of the present investigation indicate that the annual average concentration of Zinc in water samples was 3.45 ppm in 2008 of the year and 3.73 ppm in 2009 of the year, which is above the permissible limit of 5.0 ppm set for inland surface water.

The paper discusses the scattering of radiation by a Baltic crude oil –sea water emulsion. The scattering spectrum calculated using the Mie solution in the spectral range from 380 nm to 730 nm is compared with the measured spectrum of light scattered through a right angle. Spectra in the wavelength range from 210 nm to 730 nm were measured using a spectrofluorimeter for fresh and stored samples of the Baltic crude oil emulsion. Scattering increases with wavelength in the UV range and then decreases slightly with the wavelength of visible light. The result of the calculation is similar to the measured spectra. Both the calculated and measured spectra display numerous relative extremes throughout the spectral area. Light scattering in the emulsion decreases during storage as the oil concentration in the medium diminishes. The results also demonstrate that the single scattering model describes the phenomenon correctly.

The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is believed to be a common parasite of almost all endothermic animals and humans. However, recent reports of toxoplasmosis in marine mammals raise concern that cold-blooded animals may also be a potential source of T. gondii infection. The article discusses the presence of T. gondii in aquatic and terrestrial poikilothermic animals, which may be important elements in the transmission of the parasite.

The environmental degradation of poly(ε-caprolactone)[PCL] in natural fresh water (pond) and in The Baltic Sea is presented in this paper. The characteristic parameters of both environments were measured during experiment and their influence on the biodegradation of the samples was discussed. The loss of weight and changes of surface morphology of polymer samples were tested during the period of incubation. The poly(ε-caprolactone) was more biodegradable in natural sea water than in pond. PCL samples were completely assimilated over the period of six weeks incubation in The Baltic Sea water, but after forty two weeks incubation in natural fresh water the polymer weight loss was about 39%. The results have confirmed that the investigated polymers are susceptible to an enzymatic attack of microorganisms, but their activity depends on environments.

Flotation using sea water has been considered as a promising alternative to concentrate molybdenite (MoS2) under alkaline conditions due to scarcity of fresh water and increasingly strict regulations on the quality of discharged water. However, the MoS2 recovery with sea water during flotation has not been satisfactory, owing to the depressing effects from the hydrophilic metallic species onto MoS2 surface. This study combines experimental and theoretical studies of MoS2 flotation to investigate how the physicochemical properties of MoS2 vary with the addition of a dispersant, sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), and in sea and fresh water. Our experimental results show that the addition of SHMP during flotation has increased the recovery of MoS2, via reducing the adsorption of the hydrophilic metallic precipitation onto MoS2 surface. The DLVO calculation confirms that the addition of SHMP increases the floatability of MoS2 by dispersing the formed hydrophilic metallic precipitation (Mg(OH)2 colloids) from the MoS2 surface, via reversing attraction force to repulsion force, thereby improving MoS2 flotation recovery.

Five years (1998, 2000–2003) of summer records of temperature, nutrients and dissolved oxygen concentrations in the upper 400 m of the water column of the northern Gulf of Aqaba were employed to produce a simple statistical model of the relationship between temperature versus nitrate, phosphate, silicate andd issolved oxygen concentrations. Temperature profiles in the upper 400 m during summer revealeda clear thermocline in the upper 200 m. This was reflected in nutrient ando xygen concentrations as nitrate, phosphate, and silicate increasedfr om the surface to deep water while dissolved oxygen decreased. The best fit relationship between temperature versus nitrate andphosphate was inverse linear and the best fit correlation between temperature versus silicate andd issolvedo xygen was fractional. The observedn utrient concentrations were shaped by a combination of the hydrodynamics and biological factors. Deep winter mixing and high nutrient concentrations dominate during winter. Shortly after the water stratifies in spring, the nutrients are drawn down by phytoplankton during the spring bloom and remain low throughout the rest of the year. The regression equations presented here will be useful in estimating nutrient concentrations from temperature records as long as the annual natural cycle is the main driver of nutrient concentrations and external inputs are insignificant. Deviations from these relationships in the future could provide insight into modifications in the nutrient concentrations probably resulting from new nutrient sources, such as anthropogenic inputs.

The complexation of cadmium and lead with humic substances was studied using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry and a standard addition technique. The titration was done for humic substances of different molecular weight that had been isolated from seawater and subsequently redissolved in organic-free seawater. The different molecular weight fractions were obtained by ultrafiltration using 1000 D (Dalton), 5000 D and 10 000 D pore size filters. Comparison of the calculated stability constants suggests that the strengths of lead complexes in the analysed fractions are similar and that cadmium is complexed by the fraction smaller than 1000 D.

Several sea and laboratory experiments have been carried out to detect and determine the fluorescence characteristics of seawater and its natural fluorescing components and to analyse the influence of oil in the surface water layer on the lidar-induced return signal. The aim of the laboratory investigations was to create a database of different natural water types and of water polluted with Petrobaltic oil. During the r/v ‘Oceania’ cruise in the southern Baltic Sea two lidar methods were applied simultaneously to detect and analyse the influence of the fluorescence emission of oil on the fluorescence spectrum of seawater. Detection of oil pollution can be used to correct the fluorescent factors of fluorescing components on the basis of natural seawater fluorescence spectra.

A method for estimating the water backscattering coefficient was put forward on the basis of experimental data of diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance and irradiance reflectance. Calculations were carried out for open sea waters of different types and the spectral dependencies were found (‘anomalous’ spectra) and explained. On this basis, a new model of light backscattering on particles in the sea is proposed. This model may be useful for modelling remote sensing reflectance spectra in order to solve the inverse problems of estimating the concentration of natural admixtures in shelf waters.

Short-term measurements of nutrient and DOC concentrations and suspended matter (particles, chlorophyll a, phaeophytin, algae and ATP concentrations) carried out in seawater layers of varying thickness (10, 90, 250 μm and the underwater layer – 15 cm depth) in spring form the basis for a discussion of the diurnal fluctuations of nutrient and suspended organic matter concentrations. Quantitative and qualitative differences in the composition of neuston species were recorded in selected sub-layers of the chemically stratified sea surface microlayer. The non-linear regression equation was applied in a mathematical model of the diurnal fluctuations of nutrients and organic matter. Two maxima and two minima were found in the diurnal cycle of nutrient concentrations and organic suspensions in sub-layers of different thickness selected from the sea surface. The first maximum, expressed by the proliferation of phytoneuston, lasted from the very early morning till mid-morning. The second maximum occurred in the afternoon. The chlorophyll a concentration, and ATP and neuston abundance declined markedly around noon, when the biologically-damaging radiation dose increased, compelling the downward migration of organisms. At the same time, the photo-oxidation of dissolved organic matter intensified and the concentrations of inorganic forms of nitrogen and phosphorus rose. A shift (up to 2 h) between the maximum and minimum neuston concentration in these sea surface layers was indicative of phototaxis occurring within the entire surface microlayer and in the underwater layer. After sunset the decline in phytoneuston abundance could be related to zooplankton grazing as well as to respiratory breakdown.

The concentration of monosaccharides in samples collected in the Gulf of Gdańsk area was determined in water filtered through ∼0.8 μm pore size filters. Seawater concentrations ranged from about 0.2 to 1.1 mg C dm−3, the highest values being detected at the mouth of the river Vistula. Seasonality was detectable in the data distribution; the majority of autumn values lay within the 0.2–0.4 range while concentrations in the spring samples were higher and the values more widely scattered. Measurements of monosaccharide concentrations at selected points during the whole observation period showed that values increased from spring to autumn as much as 5-fold. Concomitant analyses in Vistula river water yielded concentrations from 0.4 to 1.2 mg C dm−3. These latter values were all higher than those recorded in seawater in the corresponding months.

W sezonie zimowym 2006/2007 przebieg zlodzenia Hornsundu był odmienny od przeciętnego. Od listopada do marca średnia miesięczna temperatura powietrza była o 3.6–6.3 deg wyższa od średniej klima-tycznej (1978–2006). Ujemna temperatura wody powierzchniowej przy brzegu Isbjornhamny występowała od 28 IX 2006 do 27 V 2007 r. Najniższe wartości temperatury wody mierzono w drugiej i trzeciej dekadzie października (–1.8°C). Latem i jesienią 2006 r. dochodziło do bardzo intensywnego obłamywania się lodu lodowcowego, który okresowo tworzył zwarte skupienia wzdłuż brzegu. Rozwój lodu morskiego w Isbjornhamnie cechuje się stadial-nością. Pierwszy okres tworzenia się lodu morskiego miał miejsce między 6 października a 3 listopada, drugi – od połowy stycznia. W tym samym czasie dryfujący lód allochtoniczny pojawił się również na przedpolu fiordu. Od trzeciej dekady lutego do drugiej dekady kwietnia prawie cała powierzchnia Hornsundu pokryta była lodem dryfu-jącym o zmiennej zwartości. Na osiowej partii fiordu lód morski zanikł po 25 kwietnia, a w Brepollen – w trzeciej dekadzie czerwca 2007 r. Maksymalna wysokość wału lodu nabrzegowego w Isbjornhamnie osiągnęła 2.5 m.
This article presents the development of sea ice cover in the waters of central and western part of the Hornsund Fjord, as well as in its foreshore during winter season 2006–2007. Due to long lasting (November-March) high air temperatures (Fig. 1) the sea ice cover development of Hornsund was different from the average one. Significant decrease in air temperature was observed only in April (mean monthly –8.7°C). In such thermal conditions the maximum thickness of sea ice which might have been formed in the outer, sheltered from high seas areas of the fjord, estimated with the help of Zubov formula, could reach 47cm in January, 58cm in February, 66cm in March, up to 77–80cm in the period from April to May 2007 (Tab.1). In summer and autumn 2006 only brash glacier ice and small icebergs broken off the glaciers endings on the sea in Hornsund drifted in the waters of the fjord. At this time brash glacier ice and growlers broken off the Hans Glacier periodically concentrated densely along the coast of Isbjorhamna. The first forms of new ice (slush and grease ice as well as shuga) were observed close to the west coast of Isbjornhamna from 6th October till 3rd November. The second period of sea ice formation started on 7th December. However, the ice disappeared quickly because of strong winds. Not sooner than in the middle of January when severe frost was noted, a permanent ice cover was formed (young ice). But also this ice was broken and diverged in most part of the fjord. Fast ice was only observed in the internal waters of Hornsund, in the Brepollen, Burgerbukta and Samarinvagen bays. From the third decade of February till the end of April the ice cover of Hornsund experienced large fluctuations. During that period the entire area of Hornsund was covered with sea ice a few times. This phenomenon was noted when the allochtonic ice drifting in the waters of the Sorkapp Current entered western and central part of the fjord and when the central and inner parts were covered with ice formed in situ. This sea ice cover was several times destroyed by very strong east winds causing that most of ice was moved outside the fjord. At the beginning of May very strong E and SE winds caused ice removal from the axial part of Hornsund. Later, apart from two short episodes (19-29 May and 22-23 June) when open strips of allochtonic ice entered west and central part of the fjord, only single floes of broken-off the fast ice from Brepollen, Burgerbukta and Samarinvagen drifted in the waters of Hornsund. The ice season 2006/2007 ended on 19th July when the last floes of very rotten ice were observed drifting from the inside of the fjord with the tidal stream to its foreshore.

The spreading properties of several hydrocarbons (vegetable, engine, gear and crude oils) on distilled and artificial sea water were determined under laboratory conditions using a novel optical method. With the aid of Langmuir’s equation, the geometrical signatures of a discrete lens of each hydrocarbon droplet floating on a water tank served to calculate the entering E (31.30–94.18 mN m−1) and spreading S (−3.50 to −57.49 mN m−1) coefficients, and equilibrium thicknesses t∞ (0.20–1.25 cm). They appeared to be in agreement with the values derived from direct interfacial tension measurements (Wilhelmy plate and stalagmometer methods). Empirical relations of the normalized lens radius rL/rdrop and S on the water surface tension γAW were postulated as being of significant value in oil spill assessment studies at sea. The parameters obtained together with the surface properties of a natural surfactant-containing water body represent the principal input data required for modelling the spreading of a surface-tension-gradient-driven oil spill at sea.

In marine environment there are different types of objects, such as ships or naval mines, which should be located and identified. One of the location methods is based on the electric potential distribution measurement [1, 2], The object with an insulating or conductive casing, placed in an electric field, causes some field perturbations. For the purpose of the object location the dimensions of the area, where it is possible to determine electric field perturbations by measurement, are important. In this way one can pre-determine the extent of the system for locating and identifying objects placed in the seawater. This paper presents an analytical approach to the perturbation analysis of electric field distribution caused by a sphere and an ellipsoid placed in a uniform electric field. The distance, beyond which the uniform electric perturbations can be neglected, is determined.

The effect of different methodological steps on the analysis of chlorophyll a (chl a) was tested with algae cultures and Baltic Sea water. Selected experiments were tested with ANOVAs for significant differences between treatments. The results of the experiments led to the following recommendations: the sample volume should be low so that filtration takes no longer than 10 min. Extracts rather than filters should be stored if storage of the samples at −20◦C is required. However, quickfreezing in liquid nitrogen is recommended. The extraction efficiency was much better in 96% ethanol than in 90% acetone – extraction in the latter solvent requires the filters to be homogenised. The extraction time has no significant influence within a range of 3 to 24 hours if the recommended 96% ethanol is used.

Subject of the study are changes of the water temperature occurring on the Polish Baltic coast during years 1951-2010 (in Kołobrzeg, due to deficiencies in the data, for the years 1957-2010). It is expressed in the form of a linear trend. The study was based on the monthly average temperature of the sea water in the following stations: Świnoujście, Międzyzdroje, Kołobrzeg, Władysławowo, Hel and Gdynia. For most of analyzed stations an increase in average annual temperature of the water were observed. The largest one was recorded in Gdynia. In Świnoujście there were no significant changes in water temperature except for the slight its drop in June. A significant increase in the water temperature occurred in Międzyzdroje in February, March, April and May; in Kołobrzeg in January and March; in Władysławowo in January, February, March, April and June and in Hel and Gdynia in February, March, April, May, July and August. The greatest changes were in April in Hel and Gdynia.
Przedmiot badań stanowią zmiany temperatury wody zachodzące na polskim wybrzeżu Bałtyku w latach 1951-2010 (w Kołobrzegu ze względu na braki w danych w latach 1957-2010), wyrażone w formie trendu liniowego. W pracy wykorzystano średnie miesięczne wartości temperatury wody w następujących miejscowościach: Świnoujście, Międzyzdroje, Kołobrzeg, Władysławowo, Hel oraz Gdynia. W większości analizowanych stacji (oprócz Świnoujścia i Kołobrzegu) nastąpił wzrost średniej rocznej temperatury wody. Największy odnotowano w Gdyni, gdzie temperatura wody wzrastała średnio o około 0,02°C rocznie. Istotny statystycznie wzrost temperatury wody nastąpił w Międzyzdrojach w lutym, marcu, kwietniu i maju, w Kołobrzegu w styczniu i marcu, we Władysławowie w styczniu, lutym, marcu, kwietniu i w czerwcu, a w Helu i Gdyni w lutym, marcu, kwietniu, maju, lipcu i sierpniu. Największe zmiany następowały w kwietniu (w Helu i Gdyni powyżej 0,03°C rocznie). W Świnoujściu nie wystąpiły istotne zmiany temperatury wody z wyjątkiem niewielkiego jej spadku w czerwcu.

This paper discusses changes in the dissolved oxygen concentration (DOC) in the southern Baltic Sea. The oxygenation of the whole water column was estimated. Monthly mean DOCs, as well as a detailed description of the annual surface layer dissolved oxygen (DO) cycle, are presented. The DO cycle at the surface is characterized by two maxima in March/April and November, and by two minima in July/August and December. The DO decline time after the major Baltic inflow (MBI) in 2014 was estimated at about 10 months for the Bornholm Deep and Słupsk Furrow. Whereas the Bornholm Basin was relatively well oxygenated, low oxygen concentrations (<4 mg l−1) were measured in the deep layer of the Gdańsk Deep throughout the inflow period. In addition, the cod spermatozoa activation layer together with the neutral egg buoyancy layer for the Bornholm Basin and Słupsk Furrow are discussed on the basis of the measured DOCs and the variability in hydrographic conditions.

The paper analyses experimental measurements of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra in different seawaters. The fluorescence parameters, calculated from LIF spectra as the ratio of the integrals of fluorescence and Raman signal intensities, provide information about the relative changes in the concentrations of fluorescing molecules. Gathered during several cruises in 1994–2004 in the Baltic and Nordic Seas, all the data are presented as scatter plots of the fluorescence parameters of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Satisfactory correlations between these two parameters were found a) for open Nordic Seas waters, b) for the southern Baltic in blooming periods only, and c) for the Gulf of Gdańsk in non-blooming periods only.

The results of the present study showed variability in resistance of FC bacteria isolated from beach sand and sea water against tested antibiotics. Enteric bacteria were the most resistant to clindamycin and penicillin while the most sensitive to ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, neomycin, rifampicin and streptomycin. Fecal coliform bacteria inhabiting sand were more resistant to nearly all tested antibiotics compared to bacteria isolated from sea water. The majority of bacteria inhabiting sea water and sand of the studied beach were resistant to only 1-4 antibiotics out of the 12 antibiotics tested. Fecal coliform bacteria isolated from Ustka beach were the most resistant to β-lactam and lincosamide antibiotics, while the most susceptible to aminoglycosides.
Badano oporność na antybiotyki bakterii fekalnych wyizolowanych z wody morskiej i piasku rekreacyjnej plaży znajdującej się na południowym wybrzeżu Morza Bałtyckiego. Uzyskane wyniki badań wykazały zmienność w oporności bakterii z grupy coli wyizolowanych z piasku i wody morskiej wobec badanych antybiotyków. Mikroorganizmy te były najbardziej odporne na penicylinę i klindamycynę, a najbardziej wrażliwe na ciprofloksacynę, gentamycynę, neomycynę, ryfampicyny i streptomycyny. Bakterie kałowe z grupy coli zasiedlające piasek były bardziej odporne na prawie wszystkie badane antybiotyki niż te izolowane z wody morskiej. Większość bakterii zasiedlających wodę morską i piasek badanej plaży była odporna na zaledwie 1-4 antybiotyków z 12 badanych. Bakterie kałowe z grupy coli izolowane na plaży w Ustce były najbardziej oporne na antybiotyki beta-laktamowe oraz linkozamidy, a najbardziej podatne na aminoglikozydy.

The paper presents results of research concerning hydrological and meteorological conditions during the stormy weather on 27th November, 2016 in the South Baltic Sea and over the Polish coast. The wind which occurred the South Baltic Sea at that time reached the force of 7 Beaufort degree and in gusts 8 to 9 Beaufort degree. The south part of the Baltic Sea was affected by the low pressure system (981 hPa) which the centre was situated in South Finland and Northwest Russia. Some destroys were observed on the Polish coast line and in ports of the Gdansk Bay. The analyses is concerned on the wind force, the wind direction, the atmospheric pressure and the sea water level in some places of the Polish coast line and especially in the Gdansk Bay.
W artykule została przedstawiona analiza warunków hydrometeorologicznych na akwenie Południowego Bałtyku podczas sztormowych warunków 27 listopada 2016 roku. Wiatr, który wystąpił na Południowym Bałtyku, miejscami osiągał siłę 7 stopni Beauforta, a w porywach 8 do 9 stopni Beauforta. Południowa część Morza Bałtyckiego była pod wpływem układu niżowego o wartości ciśnienia w centrum 981 hPa, które znajdowało się nad południową Finlandią i północno-zachodnią Rosją. Odnotowano wiele zniszczeń powstałych na polskim wybrzeżu i w portach Zatoki Gdańskiej. Analiza warunków hydrometeorologicznych skoncentrowana została na sile wiatru i jego kierunku, ciśnieniu atmosferycznym oraz poziomie wody mierzonej na stacjach pomiarowych polskiego wybrzeża, szczególnie w Zatoce Gdańskiej. Głównym celem przeprowadzonych analiz było wskazanie czynników meteorologicznych mających wpływ na podniesienie poziomu wody na polskim wybrzeżu w tych określonych warunkach pogodowych.

Direct measurements of the backscattering coefficient bb require the determination of the Volume Scattering Function (VSF) and its integration over a backward hemisphere. In sea water they are difficult and are therefore carried out very rarely. That is why the backscattering coefficient is much more frequently obtained with so-called single angle scattering meters: these operate by measuring the VSF for a fixed angle region of the backward hemisphere. This article examines the spectral variability of the correlation between directly measured backscattering coefficients and VSFs. Also presented are the averaged slopes of VSF spectra, measured in southern Baltic waters over a wide range of scattering angles.

The world’s tides are a result of the combined forces of celestial forces and centrifugal force exerted by the Earth Moon and the Sun acting on the water body, earth tides and the atmospheric tides. Harmonic analysis is the most popular and widely accepted method used for the processing and expression of tidal behaviour as well as its characteristics. Despite its strengths, harmonic analysis has a few drawbacks when short data are involved for long term prediction. However, to enhance the accuracy of the popular methodology of harmonic analysis (HA), this study presents a wavelet based harmonic model for tidal analysis and prediction. Six months of water level heights at four tide gauge stations in Sabah and Sarawak of Malaysia were employed. The results obtained agrees with the original data when a comparison was made. The root mean square error (RMSE) and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) are the statistical index tools applied to test the functioning of the model. The residual error is the deviation between the original data and the predicted data which was also computed in this study. The new wavelet based harmonic model improves the accuracy of prediction. Moreover, the model is efficient and feasible for tidal analysis and prediction.

Samples of sea, river and pond water of different absorbance were exposed to artificial radiation resembling sunlight in the UV range. A statistically significant increase in ammonium concentration was detected in pond water of the highest absorbance after 5 h of irradiation. In sea and river water a corresponding increase (< 0.5 μM) was recorded after an exposure time of 25 hours. The bulk characteristics of the analysed samples were insufficient to explain the observed differences.

Opis:
The antimicrobial activity of twelve preparations of humic substances isolated from sea water, marine bottom sediments and lake water was examined. Humic substances from marine bottom sediment samples were fractionated into humic and/or fulvic acids. The susceptibility of 11 strains of anaerobic, 8str ains of aerobic bacteria and 2 strains of yeast-like fungi to preparations of humic substances, humic and/or fulvic acids was determined employing the plate dilution technique in Brucella agar (anaerobic bacteria), Mueller-Hinton agar (aerobic bacteria) and Sabouraud agar (yeast-like fungi). Concentrations from 150 to 600 μg ml−1 of the preparations examined inhibited the growth of numerous microorganisms (Table). The results obtained seem to indicate that humic substances are involved in the self-purification of sea and lake waters.

Hydrographic data from the North Aegean Sea were used to examine the summer variability of surface water masses during the period 1998–2001. Attention was placed on the surface hydrographic features of the area, such as the Black Sea Water (BSW) plume expansion, the frontal characteristics of the BSW with the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) and the variability of submesoscale hydrographic features (such as the Samothraki Anticyclone). Strong southerly wind stresses were found responsible for relaxing the horizontal density gradients across the BSW-LIW frontal zone and displacing this front to the north of Lemnos Island, thus suppressing the Samothraki Anticyclone towards the Thracian Sea continental shelf. Under northerly winds, the BSW-LIWfront returns to its regular position (south of Lemnos Island), thus allowing the horizontal expansion of the Samothraki gyre up to the Athos Peninsula. Present results indicate the importance of medium-term wind stress effects on the generation of Samothraki Anticyclone suppression/expansion events.

Opis:
The paper presents an improved method of determining petroleum pollutants in water based on fluorescence, which allows the oil content to be estimated with an accuracy better than 50%. The method was used to measure the oil content in Gulf of Gdańsk seawater sampled at Gdynia-Orłowo between January 2006 and September 2008. The 174 measurements made during this period ranged from 1 to 120 μg kg−1, but the majority did not exceed 20 μg kg−1. The most probable level of contamination is c. 5 μg kg−1.

This study presents how human-altered hydrographical settings (flow restrictions) impacts the natural distribution and community structure of copepods in the Kochi Backwaters (KBW), the largest monsoonal estuary along the southwest coast of India. This study is primarily based on an extensive seasonal sampling in the KBW and their comparison with a historical data set. Thannermukkom Barrage (TB) was built in the southern section of the KBW in the 1970s to prevent saline water intrusion to the upstream during the non-monsoon periods. Thirteen locations (1—4 in the downstream, 5—9 in the midstream, and 10—13 in the upstream) were sampled in this study over the entire stretch of the KBW during the Pre-Southwest Monsoon (PRM), Southwest Monsoon (SWM), and Post-Southwest Monsoon (PSWM). The overall effect of TB in the KBW is a seaward push of mesohaline conditions during all seasons with varying intensities. In response to the seaward push of mesohaline conditions, copepods Acartiella keralensis, Acartia plumosa, Acartia sp., Pseudodiaptomus annandalei, Pseudodiaptomus serricaudatus, Euterpina acutifrons and Oithona brevicornis showed a corresponding spatial shift for their highest abundance and diversity from midstream during PRM to the downstream during the SWM/PSWM. Multivariate and IndVal analysis demarcated many indicator species of copepods of different hydrographical settings in the KBW. A comparison with the historical data set showed that there is an apparent long-term change in hydrography, copepod composition and community structure in the upstream of the KBW due to TB.

The conductivity-salinity conversion algorithm used for oceanographic measurements of Practical Salinity on the PSS-78 scale is designed for IAPSO Standard Seawater. The application of this formula to a given sample of non-standard seawater does not necessarily result in a constant salinity value when the sample’s conductivity is measured at different temperatures.We have experimentally studied the magnitude of this non-conservative effect of Practical Salinity using a sample of Baltic seawater possessing a density anomaly of about 50 g m−3. The apparent change of salinity observed is at the limit of experimental uncertainty and is not significantly different from the drift of Standard Seawater, which was measured for comparison.

Microcystins and nodularin are potent hepatotoxins produced by fresh and seawater cyanobacteria.T he persistence of three hepatotoxins – microcystin-LR, microcystin-RR and nodularin – was investigated in sterile BG-11 medium of different salinity and in water collected from the Gulf of Gdańsk.After 21 days of incubation at 17±1◦ C and constant illumination of about 40 μmol photon m−2 s−1 the concentration of toxins decreased by about 30–37%.N o significant changes in toxin concentration in the BG-11 media of different salinity were observed. When toxins were incubated in non-sterile seawater, their concentrations decreased markedly.It is likely that some strains of bacteria are responsible for the breakdown of the toxins.No dularin turned out to be more resistant to biodegradation than the two microcystins.The influence of certain components of cyanobacteria cells on the accelerated rate of toxin degradation was also considered.

Wake waves produced by fast ferries bring about significant changes in the optical parameters of sea water in the c. 1 m thick near-bottom layer of the coastal areas of Tallinn Bay. The greatest of these changes occur at relatively small depths, but the duration of the influence increases with increasing depth. Rough quantitative estimates suggest that the overall influence of fast ferry traffic in Tallinn Bay may result in an annual loss of the order of several hundred litres of fine sediments from each metre of the coastline.

Opis:
Lake Gardno, as the central object in the hydrographic structure, is under the influence of land and sea waters. This results in the situation where the lake together with its direct catchment forms a unique geoecosystem which differs from other inland reservoirs performing the role of local or regional recipients in hydrographic systems, in terms of the quality of water as well as the rate and dynamics of transformations occurring in it. This is an effect of overlapping influences of waters inflowing from the catchment and intrusions of sea waters. During intrusions, waters of higher salinity occur and remain during the greater part of the year in the whole water body of the lake, which is conditioned by the shape of the basin facilitating the penetration of salty waters. It was established that the water coming from intrusions remains for at least several days. There is also evidence from reconnaissance measurements that the retention is longer. The easiness of penetration and long retention period result in the fact that only periodically the desaltation effect of potamic waters leads to an almost complete desaltation of water in the whole basin of the lake Gardno.
W pracy podjęto próbę ustalenia czy w jeziorze Gardno dochodzi do intruzji wód morskich i czy skutki, które mogą one wywoływać są typowe dla jezior przybrzeżnych występujących na polskim wybrzeżu Południowego Bałtyku, czy też pod tym względem jest to jezioro wyjątkowe. Zastosowano metodę wykonywania na jeziorze powtarzalnych zdjęć hydrochemicznych z jednoczesnym określeniem aktualnej sytuacji hydrologicznej. W latach 2002- -2006 wykonano 16 serii pomiarów w 7 punktach zlokalizowanych na jeziorze Gardno. Próbki wody pobierano w warstwie powierzchniowej, naddennej oraz interstycjalnej. Wodę z tej ostatniej warstwy uzyskiwano z powierzchniowego osadu dennego pobranego pobierakiem Kajaka poprzez użycie wirówki Centrifuge. Próbki wody analizowano w laboratorium Katedry Hydrologii Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego. Stężenie chlorków określano metodą miareczkową. Poziom wody w jeziorze odczytywano na wodowskazie IMGW zlokalizowanym w Gardnie Wielkiej, natomiast poziom morza na wodowskazie Urzędu Morskiego w Porcie Rowy bądź w Ustce. Jezioro Gardno jako centralny obiekt w strukturze hydrograficznej jest pod wpływem wód lądowych i morskich. Powoduje to, że jezioro tworzy wraz ze swoja zlewnią bezpośrednią bardzo specyficzny geoekosystem, który wyróżnia od innych zbiorników śródlądowych pełniących w systemach hydrograficznych rolę odbiorników lokalnych czy regionalnych nie tylko jakość wód, ale przede wszystkim tempo i dynamika zachodzących w nim przemian. Jest to efekt nakładających się wpływów z jednej strony wód spływających ze zlewni, a z drugiej intruzji wód morskich. Podczas intruzji pojawiają się wody o podwyższonym zasoleniu. Utrzymuje się ono przez większą część roku w całym akwatorium jeziora, czemu sprzyja kształt misy ułatwiający penetrację wód słonych. Stwierdzono, że woda pochodząca z intruzji zalega co najmniej kilka dni. Są także przesłanki wynikające z przeprowadzonych pomiarów rekonesansowych wskazujące na to, że czas zalegania jest dłuższy. Łatwość penetracji i długi okres zalegania powodują, że tylko okresowo działanie wysładzające wód potamicznych doprowadza do prawie całkowitego wysłodzenia wody w całej niecce jeziora Gardno. Najczęściej to oddziaływanie wyraźnie widoczne jest tylko w południowej części zbiornika.

Cyanobacteria, otherwise known as blue-green algae, are oxygenic, photosynthetic prokaryotes. They occur naturally in many fresh, marine and brackish waters worldwide and play an important role in global carbon and nitrogen cycles. In their long history, cyanobacteria have developed structures and mechanisms that enable them to survive and proliferate under different environmental conditions. In the Baltic Sea, the mass development of cyanobacteria is compounded by a high level of eutrophication. The dominant species in the Baltic, the filamentous Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Nodularia spumigena, can fix dissolved atmospheric N2, as a result of which they can outcompete other phytoplankton organisms. Heterocystous, filamentous cyanobacteria also make a significant contribution to the internal nutrient loading in the Baltic. The blooms of N. spumigena are of particular concern, as this cyanobacterium produces nodularin (NOD), a hepatotoxic peptide. The concentration of the toxin in the sea is regulated mainly by dilution with uncontaminated water, photolysis, sorption to sediments and microbial degradation. The transfer of the toxin in the Baltic trophic chain through zooplankton, mussels, fish and birds has been reported, but biodilution rather than bioconcentration has been observed. Cyanobacterial blooms are thought to pose a serious threat to the ecosystem. Their harmful effects are related to the occurrence of a high biomass, oxygen depletion, a reduction in biodiversity, and the production of toxic metabolites.

The paper presents the results of research into the pigment composition of seawater samples taken from various depths in the Gulf of Gdańsk in April and September 1999. Pigments were separated by RP–HPLC, and identification was confirmed by co-injection with reference standards and on-line diode array spectra. The following groups of pigments were identified: chlorophylls: a, b, c1 + c2; photosynthetic carotenoids (PSC) – peridinin, fucoxanthin, α-carotene; photoprotecting carotenoids (PPC) – diadinoxanthin, alloxanthin, zeaxanthin, lutein, neoxanthin, violaxanthin and β-carotene. Quantitative and qualitative diversity in pigment characteristics were observed in both seasons, though lutein and α-carotene were not identified in the September samples. The respective April and September concentrations of the functional groups of pigments were: total chlorophylls content 0.47–104.25 and 0.57–13.66 μg dm−3; PSC 0.07–21.23 and 0.02–1.56 μg dm−3; PPC 0.05–14.08 and 0.04–1.79 μg dm−3. Within the PSC group, peridinin and fucoxanthin were dominant in the April samples, but only fucoxanthin in the September ones. Among the PPCs, diadinoxanthin and alloxanthin were dominant in April, zeaxanthin in September. Photosynthetic and photoprotecting carotenoids display a linear correlation with chlorophyll a content in all the samples.

Opis:
Eutrophication in two different coastal areas — the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic) and the Oslofjord/Drammensfjord (Norway) — both subject to human pressure and with restricted water exchange with adjacent seas, was investigated and compared. Sediment cores (up to 20 cm long) were collected at 12 stations using a core sampler, 6 in each of the two areas, and divided into sub-samples. The physicochemical parameters characterizing the adjacent water column and near-bottom water, i.e. salinity, oxygen concentration and temperature, were measured during sample collection. Chlorophylls-a, -b and -c, their derivatives and selected carotenoids were determined for all the samples, as were additional parameters characterizing the sediments, i.e. Corg, Ntot, d13C and d15N, grain size. 210Pb activity was also determined and on that basis sediment mixing and accumulation rates were estimated. The distribution of pigments in sediments was related to environmental conditions, the sampling site location and sediment characteristics. The results are in agreement with other observations that eutrophication in the Gulf of Gdańsk has increased, especially since the 1970s, whereas in the Oslofjord it decreased during the same period. The pigments are better preserved in inner Oslofjord sediments than in those from the Gulf of Gdańsk. The results demonstrate that the sum of chloropigments-a insediments calculated per dry weight of sediments is a valuable measure of eutrophication, providing that the monitoring site is selected properly, i.e. sediments are hypoxic/anoxic and non-mixed. Besides, the results confirm previous observations that the percentages of particular chlorophyll-a derivatives in the sum of chloropigments-a are universal markers of environmental conditions in a basin. The ratios of chloropigments-b and chlorophylls-c to the sum of chloropigments-a (SChlns-b/ SChlns-a; Chls-c/SChlns-a) may by applied as complementary markers of freshwater and marine organic matter input, respectively.

Opis:
Comparability of data collected within collaborative programmes became the key challenge of analytical chemistry in the 1990s, including monitoring of the marine environment. To obtain relevant and reliable data, the analytical process has to proceed under a well-established Quality Assurance (QA) system with external analytical proficiency tests as an inherent component. A programme called Quality Assurance in Marine Monitoring in Europe (QUASIMEME) was established in 1993 and evolved over the years as the major provider of QA proficiency tests for nutrients, trace metals and chlorinated organic compounds in marine environment studies. The article presents an evaluation of results obtained in QUASIMEME Laboratory Performance Studies by the monitoring laboratory of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (Gdynia, Poland) in exercises on nutrient determination in seawater. The measurement uncertainty estimated from routine internal quality control measurements and from results of analytical performance exercises is also presented in the paper.

The paper presents some results of research on the fluorescence properties of petroleum oil-in-water emulsions. The research addresses the question of measuring and modelling light fields in an oil-polluted marine environment. The fluorescence of the emulsion manifests itself in the spectral range from 260 to over 400 nm and is much less intensive in the visible light region. Fluorescence is always weaker than the radiation scattered in an emulsion. The measurement and modelling of ultraviolet radiation scattering requires fluorescence to be taken into consideration, but in the visible spectral region this phenomenon is negligible.

For many years the Nordic Seas have been the subject of research into ocean circulation carried out by the Institute of Oceanology PAS, especially the inflow of Atlantic water and the intensive turbulent mixing of these waters with Arctic and shelf waters. Ocean currents affect various biological processes, among them the supply of organic matter and oxygen, which constitute the foundation for the unique flora and fauna of the Svalbard islands. Spectrophotometric examinations of surface waters using an M32 B spectroflu- orophotometer (LDI Ltd.) were carried out repeatedly during Arctic cruises on board r/v ‘Oceania’. The results presented in this paper come from the AREX campaigns of 2003 and 2006. Analysis of the chlorophyll a fluorescence excitation spectra recorded shows an increase in phytoplankton abundance and the changes in the spatial distribution of the phytoplankton species characteristic of Atlantic, Arctic and shelf waters. The spatial patterns of the phytoplankton pigments and their abundance were compared with the physical characteristics of water masses. The analysis confirmed that phytoplankton species move together with the Atlantic water as this flows into northern latitudes.

The Brazil–Malvinas Confluence Zone (BMCZ) is characterized by high environmental variation, which could be reflected in several optical types of water, from one containing only phytoplankton and sea water to other optically more complex. In this paper, we analyze the spatio-temporal variability of the Chlorophyll-a detected by the ocean color sensor (CHLAsat) in BMCZ in order to understand its environmental variability. We use the MODIS-Aqua CHLAsat monthly composites imagery from 2002 to 2015, and applied two statistical methods: the correlogram-based robust periodogram to identify, over a broad spectrum of temporal, the most significant periodicities, and the pixel gradient distribution to study the spatial-temporal gradients within the BMCZ and variations over the continental shelf and coastal waters. Our results point out to the predominance of the annual cycle over most of the investigated area, although an area from latitude 37°S in direction NE, alongshore of Uruguay to Brazil, evidences interannual periodicities, possibly related to variations in the discharge of the Rio de la Plata associated with the El Niño phenomena. The ocean color spectroradiometric signature in terms of pixel gradient presents a relatively high variability (∼0.0 to 0.65 mg m−3); in particular the high values of the pixel gradient correspond to saline front of the estuarine system of Rio de la Plata, and to the strip of the platform that extends along the isobaths of 80 m (coast of Uruguay), especially in the center and south of the study area.

Cel: Podczas akcji gaśniczych w portach morskich lub na statkach pianotwórcze środki gaśnicze stosuje się zazwyczaj z wodą morską. Skład wody morskiej znacznie różni się od składu wody wodociągowej. Wody słone zawierają znaczne ilości soli mineralnych, które mogą powodować niszczenie pian gaśniczych, zmniejszając skuteczność gaśniczą, co ma istotny wpływ na powodzenie akcji ratowniczej. Z uwagi na to środki pianotwórcze przeznaczone do stosowania z wodą morską powinny posiadać podwyższoną odporność na duże stężenie elektrolitów zawartych w wodzie zasolonej. Celem artykułu jest porównanie przydatności metod badania jakości środków pianotwórczych stosowanych do gaszenia pożarów przy użyciu wody zasolonej. Projekt i metody: W badaniach wykorzystano najczęściej stosowane w Europie metody badań środków pianotwórczych przeznaczonych do stosowania z wodą morską określone w normach PN-EN 1568 cz. 1–4, ISO 7203-1 i ISO 7203-3 w przepisach Międzynarodowej Organizacji Morskiej (IMO). W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań jakości piany: liczby spienienia i szybkości wykraplania piany oraz skuteczności gaśniczej: czasu gaszenia i czasu nawrotu palenia trzech syntetycznych środków pianotwórczych (środki S1, S2 i S3) i jednego środka fluoroproteinowego (FP 4). Środki S1 i S3 były przeznaczone do stosowania tylko z wodą niezasoloną, natomiast środki S2 i FP4 były przeznaczone do użytkowania z wodą niezasoloną i morską. Wyniki: Badania, zarówno dla środków przeznaczonych do stosowania z wodą niezasoloną, jak i morską potwierdziły gorszą zdolność pianotwórczą i mniejszą trwałość piany wytworzonej z koncentratów przy zastosowaniu wody zasolonej. Gaszenie pożarów testowych przy zastosowaniu tych samych wydajności piany (11 l/min) jest trudniejsze w przypadku testów określonych w przepisach IMO niż w przypadku innych testów (m. in. ze względu na kształt tacy). Jednak jednoczesne zastosowanie trzech dysz i zwiększenie przez to intensywności podawania piany znacznie poprawia efektywność działań gaśniczych oraz umożliwia szybkie i skuteczne ugaszenie pożaru testowego opisanego w przepisach IMO. Wnioski: Jakość środków gaśniczych wykorzystywanych podczas akcji gaśniczych ma ogromny wpływ na efektywność działań gaśniczych. W portach morskich szczególnie istotna jest ich odporność na działanie słonej wody. Środek gaśniczy o odpowiedniej jakości, właściwie zastosowany, zwiększa bezpieczeństwo osób oraz umożliwia ograniczenie ekonomicznych i ekologicznych strat pożarowych.
Aim: Fire extinguishing foam is usually combined with sea water during firefighting operations on a ship or at a seaport. The structure of sea water is different from fresh water. Sea water contains large quantities of mineral salts, which may cause the deterioration of extinguishing foam and consequently reduce the effectiveness of firefighting. For this reason foam intended for use in conjunction with sea water should contain a higher resistance to the high concentration of electrolytes contained in salt water. The purpose of this paper is to compare the suitability of testing methods for foam used in firefighting, which is mixed with sea water. Project and methods: This research project utilised the most commonly used methods in Europe for testing firefighting foam, which is mixed with sea water, specified in standards; PN-EN 1568, ISO 7203-1, ISO 7203-3 and regulations from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The article reveals results from investigations dealing with foam quality for three synthetic foaming agents (S1, S2 and S3) and one fluoroprotein foam concentrate (FP4). Tests focussed on; foam creation, expansion ratio and drainage velocity, and extinguishing effectiveness. Two foaming agents (S1 and S3) can be mixed with freshwater only. Other agents (S2 and FP4) can be mixed with both, freshwater and sea water. Results: Tests, of agents intended to be mixed with fresh water as well as those designed for mixing with sea water confirmed an inferior production of foam, with a lower expansion ratio and reduced foam stability, for concentrates formulated with the use of sea water. Achievement of the flow rate identified in IMO regulations was more difficult during tests. However, a simultaneous application of three nozzles and an increase in the delivery intensity significantly increased the effectiveness of extinguishing operations and allowed for quick and successful extinguishing of test fires. Conclusions: The quality of extinguishing agents used during fire incidents has a large bearing on the effectiveness of firefighting. During operations at sea ports, extinguishing agents’ resistance to influences of sea water is of particular importance. An agent, of appropriate quality and suitably applied increases the safety of people and mitigates the economic as well as ecological losses attributable to fires.

The wetting properties of solid mineral samples (by contact angles) in original surfactant-containing sea water (Gulf of Gdańsk,Ba ltic) were characterised under laboratory conditions on a large set (31 samples) of well-classified stones of diverse hydrophobicity using the sessile drop (ADSA-P approach),ca ptive bubble and inclined plate methods. An experimental relation between the static contact angle θeq and stone density ρ was obtained in the form θeq = Bρ + C,wher e B = 12.23 ± 0.92, C = −(19.17 ± 0.77),an d r2 = 0.92. The histogram of θeq distribution for polished stone plates exhibited a multimodal feature indicating that the most abundant solid materials (hydrophilic in nature) have contact angles θeq = 7.2,10. 7,15. 7 and 19.2◦,whic h appear to be applicable to unspecified field stones as well. The contact angle,a pH-dependent quantity,ap pears to be a sensitive measure of stone grain size,e.g . granite. The captive bubble method gives reproducible results in studies of porous and highly hydrophilic surfaces such as stones and wood. The authors consider the adsorption of natural sea water surfactants on stone surfaces to be the process responsible for contact angle hysteresis. In the model,an equation was derived for determining the solid surface free energy from the liquid’s surface tension γLV; it also enabled the advancing θA and receding θR contact angles of this liquid to be calculated. Measurements of contact angle hysteresis Δθ(= θA − θR) with surfactant-containing sea water and distilled water (reference) on the same stone surfaces allowed the film pressure ΔΠ (1.22 to 8.80 mJ m−2), solid surface free energy ΔγS (−17.03 to −23.61 mJ m−2) and work done by spreading ΔWS (−1.23 to −11.52 mJ m−2) to be determined. The variability in these parameters is attributed to autophobing,an effect operative on a solid surface covered with an adsorptive layer of surfactants. The wetting behaviour of solid particles is of great importance in numerous technological processes including froth flotation,d emulgation,an ti-foaming procedures and the coal industries. It is believed that the approach presented here and the examples of its application to common sea water/solid mineral systems could be successfully adapted to optimise several surfactant-mediated adsorption processes (see below) of practical value in natural water ecology.

W ostatnich latach coraz częściej w technologii cementacyjnej wykorzystywane są mieszaniny wiążące oparte na cieczach o różnym zasoleniu. Ma to związek z faktem, iż w wielu wypadkach konieczne jest użycie zmineralizowanej wody zarobowej, zawierającej znaczne ilości rozpuszczonych soli. Dotyczy to np. wierceń prowadzonych na platformach wiertniczych, w których jako ciecz zarobową można wykorzystać wodę morską. Woda morska jest powszechnie stosowana na wielu platformach wiertniczych, zwłaszcza w Zatoce Meksykańskiej, okolicach Alaski, Zatoce Perskiej i na Morzu Północnym. W literaturze [13] można znaleźć informacje, że woda morska jest odpowiednia do przygotowania zaczynów cementowych do uszczelniania rur okładzinowych, a własności technologiczne otrzymywanych zaczynów z kilku prób są powtarzalne i stabilne. W artykule omówiono badania laboratoryjne wykonane w INiG – PIB, mające na celu opracowanie składów zaczynów cementowych zarabianych wodą morską. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań opracowano dwa rodzaje receptur zaczynów cementowych na bazie wody morskiej (pobranej z Morza Bałtyckiego). Były to zaczyny cementowe oraz cementowo-lateksowe testowane w temperaturach 50 i 70°C i przy ciśnieniach 25 i 35 MPa. W celu opracowania odpowiedniego zaczynu cementowego należało dobrać głównie ilość środka opóźniającego wiązanie. Zaczyny cementowe posiadały gęstości od około 1790 kg/m3 (przy zastosowaniu cementu portlandzkiego CEM I 32,5) do około 1870 kg/m3 (przy użyciu cementu wiertniczego G). Czasy początku gęstnienia opracowanych zaczynów dla temperatur 50 i 70°C wynosiły około 3÷3 ½ godziny, natomiast czasy końca gęstnienia – około 4÷4 ½ godziny. Kamienie cementowe po 7 dniach hydratacji posiadały wytrzymałość na ściskanie wynoszącą około 20÷25 MPa.
In recent years, binding mixtures based on various salinity fluids are being used increasingly in cementing technologies. This is due to the fact that in many cases it is necessary to use mineralized mixing water, containing substantial quantities of dissolved salts. This applies for example to offshore drilling during which seawater can be used as mixing water. The seawater is commonly used on many offshore platforms, especially in the Gulf of Mexico, around Alaska, the Persian Gulf and the North Sea. In many publications we can find information that seawater is suitable for the preparation of cement slurries for sealing the casing and obtained cement slurries have reproducible and stable technological properties. This paper discusses the result of laboratory tests carried out in The Oil and Gas Institute – National Research Institute, for the development of formulas for cement slurries based on seawater. As a result of the tests, two kind of seawater based cement slurries (water from Baltic Sea) have been developed. Developed slurries: cement slurries and latex-based slurries were tested at temperatures 50°C and 70°C and at pressure 25 MPa and 35 MPa. The aim of laboratory tests was to develop cement slurries with the addition of an appropriate amount of retarders. Cement slurries had density in the range from 1790 kg/m3 (based on Portland cement class CEM I) to 1870 kg/m3 (based on drilling class cement G). The slurries analyses were performed at temperatures 50°C and 70oC, the beginning of their thickening time was approx. 3÷3 ½ hour, while the end of thickening time was approx. 4÷4 ½ hour. The compressive strength of cement stones was about 20÷25 MPa after 7 days of hydration.

The space-time dynamics of chlorophyll a concentration and seawater excess viscosity has been investigated in the hydrographically contrasting inshore and offshore water masses of the eastern English Channel. This was done during the phytoplankton spring bloom dominated by Phaeocystis globosa before and after the very large-scale formation of foam induced by an increase in wind-driven turbulence and the related wave breakings. The results suggest that the dynamics of chlorophyll a concentration and seawater excess viscosity are differentially controlled by the formation of foam through the intensity of the spring bloom and wind-generated turbulence.

Environmental degradability of novel organic-inorganic cellulose acetate butyrate hybrids obtained via solgel process was investigated. The degradation of hybrids was studied under marine exposure conditions in the Baltic Sea for a period of 25 weeks. The influence of characteristic parameters of sea water on the degree of degradation monitored by changes of weight and optical microscopy was discussed. The degraded samples were also examined by FT-IR spectroscopy. It has been established that the CAB/silica hybrids are more susceptible to biodegradation in sea water environment than pure cellulose acetate butyrate.

Estuaries are transition zones between the land and the sea which form aquatic ecosystems, often referred to as marginal filters. Numerous classifications of estuaries are based on such criteria as: geomorphological structure, the character of water circulation and stratification, the ratio between freshwater and marine water and the type of energy flow. However, not all estuaries fall into one of the above categories. Some of them represent an intermediate type, while the type of others may change depending on the season and related changes in water inflow rate. Fisheries, including bi-valve mollusks, depend on the high productivity of estuarine areas, which can be also used as ports or sites of recreation and industrial activities. Estuaries play a fundamental role in maintaining an ecological balance in the biosphere.
Estuaria to tereny przejściowe pomiędzy lądem a morzem, które tworzą wodne ekosystemy, często nazywane „filtrami brzeżnymi”. Liczne klasyfikacje estuariów oparte są na takich kryteriach, jak: struktura geomorfologiczna, charakter cyrkulacji i stratyfikacji wód, stosunek dopływających wód słodkich do morskich oraz typ przepływu energii. Nie wszystkie estuaria można zaliczyć do jednej z przedstawionych kategorii. Niektóre z nich stanowią typy pośrednie, inne zmieniają typ z jednego w drugi, w zależności od pór roku i związanych z tym zmian tempa napływu wód. Wielka produktywność estuariów może być wykorzystana przez człowieka do produkcji żywności w formie hodowli ostryg, małży i rybołówstwa; mogą służyć jako porty, rejony rekreacyjne i ośrodki przemysłowe; mają również ogromne znaczenie ekologiczne dla zachowania równowagi w biosferze.

In May 2010 a copious bloom of the raphidophyte Heterosigma akashiwo was observed for the first time in Red Sea waters off the coasts of Saudi Arabia. This bloom was confined to an area where water and phytoplankton flow freely between the sea and a shrimp farm. The phytoplankton density and physico-chemical characteristics of the sea water were therefore investigated weekly at bloom and non-bloom sites in order to gain insight into the environmental factors prevailing at the bloom site and their link with the shrimp farm runoff. The bloom site showed higher nutrient concentrations than the non-bloom site, indicating the possible role of the shrimp farm in flushing nutrients into this site. The bloom appeared on 27 May, coinciding with a decrease in salinity (<300/00) and an increase in temperature (>19◦C). The results of toxicological assays showed that both bloom samples and batch cultures of H. akashiwo were toxic to Artemia salina and exhibited haemolytic activity with respect to rabbit erythrocytes. Bloom samples showed a higher toxicity (LC50 = 8.9 × 104 cells ml−1) and haemolytic activity (EC50 = 3.64 × 104 cells ml−1) than the batch cultures (LC50 =11.6×104 cells ml−1, EC50 =5.1×104 cells ml−1). In the light of the results of this study, the link between H. akashiwo blooms and shrimp farm runoff should be considered during the monitoring of Red Sea coastal waters for the presence of harmful algal blooms.

This overview presents in detail the state of knowledge of the abilities of various components of the Baltic Sea environment to accumulate trace elements and radionuclides. Particular components of the Baltic ecosystem (abiotic and biotic) are considered as potential monitors of pollutants. The use of seaweeds, e.g. Fucus vesiculosus or Zostera marina is recommended, also molluscs, e.g. Mytilus edulis, for biomonitoring surveys of metal pollutants and radionuclides in the Baltic Sea. However, several requirements need to be met if results are to be reliable. Since metal levels and radionuclide activities in the growing tips of F. vesiculosus reflect exclusively the levels of their dissolved species in the ambient seawater, this alga is very useful for monitoring dissolved species of metal pollutants and radioisotopes in the Baltic ecosystem. In contrast, M. edulis, a filter feeder is an appropriate tool for monitoring trace elements occurring in both chemical forms, i.e. dissolved and suspended species. Therefore, full information on the bioavailability and toxicity of heavy metals (depending on their chemical speciation) as pollutants of the Baltic Sea can be obtained if at least two biomonitoring organisms are applied simultaneously, e.g. F. vesiculosus and M. edulis. Moreover, the data matrix can be interpreted more accurately if not only trace element but also macroelement concentrations (Ca, Mg, Na, K) in these two representatives of Baltic phytoand zoobenthos are taken into consideration; this point requires special attention. Two coastal species of fish, i.e. Zoarces viviparus and Perca fluviatilis, are good biomonitors of metallic contaminants, so their use as sentinels is recommended. The budgets of chemical elements and the ecological status of the Baltic Sea are presented. Several ‘blacksp ots’, e.g. large estuaries and seaport towns, heavily polluted by trace elements, are identified in the Baltic Sea and other enclosed seas such the Mediterranean and the BlackS eas. Of these seas, the Baltic is the most heavily loaded with trace elements and organic pollutants. The overview identifies gaps in our environmental knowledge of the Baltic Sea, and sets out possible priorities, key areas or strategies for future research.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki analiz związanych z możliwością zastosowania promieniowania laserowego do zdalnej detekcji prowadzonej w środowisku wody morskiej. W ramach projektu badawczego, realizowanego w Instytucie Optoelektroniki WAT, opracowano układ dwubarwnego dalmierza laserowego, który posłuży do wykonania badań i weryfikacji przyjętych modeli teoretycznych. Uwzględniono przy tym zarówno analityczne wyznaczenie mocy sygnału tła jak i mocy użytecznego sygnału echa. Omówiono wiele zjawisk związanych z propagacją promieniowania laserowego w wodzie morskiej a także wpływ jej najważniejszych własności optycznych na możliwości prowadzenia podwodnej teledetekcji. Dla założonej realizacji sprzętowej przedstawiono obliczenia związane z wyznaczeniem stosunku sygnał-szum dla różnych warunków prowadzonej teledetekcji oraz dokonano określenia maksymalnych zasięgów skutecznej pracy dalmierza laserowego do pomiarów podwodnych.
Theoretical and practical aspects of laser application in the field of underwater remote sensing are presented. Water characteristics concerning electromagnetic radiation propagation have been considered. Analytical approach covers both "echo" signal reflected from an underwater object and background noise signal level generated mainly by the sunlight and diffuse atmospheric illumination. Considering the real configuration of the equipment and its technical specification, signal-to-noise ratio level was computed for some specific environmental conditions. It enabled to evaluate the maximum distance ranges of underwater remote sensing. The results form the basis for practical applications of Lidar system developed at the Institute of Optoelectronics of the Military University of Technology in Warsaw.

Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) is an important component in the carbon cycle of land-locked seas. In this paper, we assess the POC concentration in the Gdańsk Deep, southern Baltic Sea. Our study is based on both a 1D POC Model and current POC concentration measurements. The aim is twofold: (i) validation of simulated concentrations with actual measurements, and (ii) a qualitative assessment of the sources contributing to the POC pool. The POC model consists of six coupled equations: five diffusion-type equations for phytoplankton, zooplankton, pelagic detritus and nutrients (phosphate and total inorganic nitrogen) and one ordinary differential equation for detritus at the bottom. The POC concentration is determined as the sum of phytoplankton, zoo-plankton and pelagic detritus concentrations, all expressed in carbon equivalents. Bacteria are not simulated in this paper. The observed large fluctuations of POC concentrations are attributed to its appreciable seasonal variability. The maximum concentration of POC varied between 870 mgC m−3 in May and 580 mgC m−3 in September, coinciding with the period of maximum dead organic matter and phytoplankton biomass concentrations. The results of the numerical simulations are in good agreement with observed values. The difference between the modelled and observed POC concentrations is equal to 3–28% and depends on the month for which the calculations were made, although no time trend of the difference is observed. The conclusion is that the numerical simulations are a ufficiently good reflection of POC dynamics in the Baltic.

Chromatografia jonowa coraz częściej wykorzystywana jest do analiz próbek innych niż woda do spożycia i ścieki. Przykładem może być przemysł farmaceutyczny, gdzie chromatografia jonowa stanowi szybką oraz wiarygodną metodę sprawdzania m.in. czystości farmaceutyków. W niniejszej pracy do badania zawartości podstawowych nieorganicznych jonów w próbkach preparatów stosowanych do higieny jam nosowych czyli popularnych "wód morskich" zastosowano metodę chromatografii jonowej. Analizie poddano 10 próbek wybranych roztworów dostępnych na polskim rynku. Różniły się one sposobem dozowania, jak i deklarowanym pochodzeniem (3 naturalne wody morskie, 2 oceaniczne, 2 uzdrowiskowe i 3 otrzymane syntetycznie).

Few studies have examined testate amoebae assemblages of estuarine tidal marshes. This study investigates the possibility of using soil testate amoebae assemblages of a brackish tidal marsh (Scheldt estuary, Belgium) as a proxy for water level changes. On the marsh surface an elevation gradient is sampled to be analyzed for testate amoebae assemblages and sediment characteristics. Further, vegetation, flooding frequency and soil conductivity have been taken into account to explain the testate amoebae species variation. The data reveal that testate amoebae are not able to establish assemblages at the brackish tidal marsh part with flooding frequencies equal to or higher than 36.5%. Further, two separate testate amoebae zones are distinguished based on cluster analysis. The lower zone’s testate amoebae species composition is influenced by the flooding frequency (~ elevation) and particle size, while the species variability in the higher zone is related to the organic content of the soil and particle size. These observations suggest that the ecological meaning of elevation shifts over its range on the brackish tidal marsh Testate amoeba assemblages in such a brackish habitat show thus a vertical zonation (RMSEP: 0.19 m) that is comparable to the vertical zonation of testate amoebae and other protists on freshwater tidal marshes and salt marshes.

Estuaries are dynamic ecosystems characterized by great and constant variability of physicochemical gradients and biological parameters. Considerable fluctuations in salinity levels, temperature, pH, concentrations of oxygen, nutrients and organic matter are quite natural in such water bodies. There are many estuarine forms at the Polish Baltic Coast, including open-sea gulfs (the Gulf of Gdansk and the Pomeranian Gulf), water bodies connected to the Baltic Sea (Lake Łebsko) and periodically closed water bodies connected to the Baltic Sea by channels or through river-mouths (Lake Jamno and Lake Gardno). The mouths of large rivers, like Odra and Vistula, also show features of estuaries. Estuaries perform a very important function of specific natural filters for a variety of chemical compounds contained in waters flowing through this area. In this way they form an effective buffer zone that prevents the penetration of toxic biological substances into seawater.
Estuaria są dynamicznymi ekosystemami o bardzo dużej i ciągłej zmienności gradientów fizykochemicznych i parametrów biologicznych. Znaczne fluktuacje w poziomie zasolenia, temperatury, tlenu, pH, steżenia nutrientów oraz materii organicznej są naturalnym zjawiskiem w tych zbiornikach wodnych. Polskie Wybrzeże Bałtyckie obfituje w wiele form typu estuariowego, począwszy od zatopionych zatok w otwartym morzu (Zatoka Gdańska i Zatoka Pomorska) do zbiorników mających stałe połączenie z morzem (jezioro Łebsko) lub okresowo zamkniętych i przez kanały lub ujściowe odcinki rzek kontaktujących się z morzem (jeziora Jamno i Gardno). Cechy estuariów wykazują również ujścia wielkich rzek jak Odra i Wisła. Estuaria pełnia bardzo ważna funkcje jako swoiste naturalne filtry dla różnych związków chemicznych zawartych w przepływającej wodzie. Tworząc skuteczną strefę buforowa uniemożliwiają przedostawanie się wielu substancji biologicznie toksycznych do morza.

Existing statistical models of in vivo light absorption by phytoplankton (Woźniak & Ostrowska 1990, Bricaud et al. 1995, 1998) describe the dependence of the phytoplankton specific spectral absorption coefficient a∗ pl(λ) on the chlorophyll a concentration Ca in seawater. However, the models do not take into account the variability in this relationship due to phytoplankton acclimation. The observed variability in the light absorption coefficient and its components due to various pigments with depth and geographical position at sea, requires further accurate modelling in order to improve satellite remote sensing algorithms and interpretation of ocean colour maps. The aim of this paper is to formulate an improved model of the phytoplankton spectral absorption capacity which takes account of the pigment composition and absorption changes resulting from photo- and chromatic acclimation processes, and the pigment package effect. It is a synthesis of earlier models and the following statistical generalisations: (1) statistical relationships between various pigment group concentrations and light field properties in the sea (described by Majchrowski & Ostrowska 2000, this volume); (2) a model of light absorption by phytoplankton capable of determining the mathematical relationships between the spectral absorption coefficients of the various photosynthetic and photoprotecting pigment groups, and their concentrations in seawater (Woźniak et al. 1999); (3) bio-optical models of light propagation in oceanic Case 1 Waters and Baltic Case 2 Waters (Woźniak et al. 1992a, b, 1995a,b). The generalised model described in this paper permits the total phytoplankton light absorption coefficient in vivo as well as its components related to the various photosynthetic and photoprotecting pigments to be determined using only the surface irradiance PAR(0+) surface chlorophyll concentration Ca(0) and depth z in the sea as input data.

Hydrogen degradation of high-strength steel and its welded joints has been evaluated under monotonically increasing, and constant load modes in sea-water. Tests were carried out in air, and sea-water at open circuit potential and under cathodic polarization. Relative values of: elongation, reduction in area, and fracture energy were chosen as measures of hydrogen degradation in slow strain rate tests (SSRT) on cylindrical smooth specimens.

Maritime safety involves minimizing error in all aspects of the marine system. Human error has received much importance, being responsible for about 80% of the maritime accident worldwide. Currently, more attention has been focused to reduce human error in marine engine maintenance. On-board marine engine maintenance activities are often complex, where seafarers conduct maintenance activities in various marine environmental (i.e. extreme weather, ship motions, noise, and vibration) and operational (i.e. work overload and stress) conditions. These environmental and operational conditions, in combination with generic human error tendencies, results in innumerable forms of error. There are numerous accidents that happened due to the human error during the maintenance activities of a marine engine. The most severe human error results in accidents due to is a loss of life. Moreover, there are other consequences too such as delaying the productivity of marine operations which results in the financial loss. This study reviews methods that are currently available for identifying, reporting and managing human error in marine engine maintenance. As a basis for this discussion, authors provide an overview of approaches for investigating human error, and a description of marine engine maintenance activities and environmental and operational characteristics.

Monte Carlo simulation method of oil spill domains determination based on the probabilistic approach to the solution of this problem is proposed. A semi-Markov model of the process of changing hydro-meteorological conditions is constructed and its parameters are defined. The general stochastic model of oil spill domain movement for various hydro-meteorological conditions is described. Monte Carlo simulation procedure is created and applied to generating the process of changing hydro-meteorological conditions and the prediction of the oil spill domain movement impacted by these changes conditions.

An important question stated in the presented paper is: Could rotifers be the indicators of climate change in the Antarctic environments? Rotifers are one of the most important components of the invertebrate fauna of the Antarctic freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. However, investigations of their distribution, diversity and an ecological role in the environment have been widely neglected, mainly due to the methodological and taxonomical difficulties. During the investigations 176 species of rotifers were found, including the endemic and cosmopolitan species. Their existence is directly proportional to microvariations of humidity factor. Scientists still have poor knowledge about the occurrence of rotifer species in recently studied habitats e.g. cryoconite holes, nunataks or soil. Probably rotifers could be the indicators of climate change in the Antarctic freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems but more investigations and monitoring studies are needed.

Monothalamous foraminifera with organic and agglutinated test walls (‘‘allogromiids’’ sensu lato) deserve attention because of their importance in deep-sea and shallow-water soft-bottom communities and their crucial phylogenetic position at the base of the foraminiferal evolutionary tree. However, our knowledge of the biodiversity and ecology of monothalamous foraminifera is very incomplete and geographically patchy. Here, we present a short review based on the available data on monothalamous, soft-walled foraminiferal taxa from the Adriatic Sea in response to several environmental parameters (i.e., organic matter, oxygen, grain size, depth). The main results of the studies provide evidence of the importance of these foraminiferal taxa in this shallow, temperate latitude area;they represent a start for the identification of soft-shelled monothalamous morphotypes that could be potential bioindicators of environments influenced by inputs of fresh waters, increasing eutrophication and consequent fluctuations in bottom-water oxygenation. The contribution of this soft-shelled component to living benthic foraminiferal assemblages appears not negligible and excluding it from foraminiferal studies can potentially lead to a loss of ecological information. The study, therefore, provide an atlas of the Adriatic soft-shelled foraminiferal taxa in order to 1) encourage the species-level description, if possible, or alternatively a basic morphotype characterization, 2) facilitate future comparisons of taxa from similar settings, 3) promote their potential use in future biomonitoring investigations together with the hard-shelled foraminifera.

Opis:
Subsea transmission pipelines (STP) are designed to transport liquids, gases or solid/liquid mixtures over some distances. STP are buried underground or submerged in water for transportation of natural oil and gas (O&G) products. A Vernonia amygdalina (VA) solution is prepared to act as an inhibitor. The specimens are kept in a workable state. Steps are taken to prepare each specimen. All cuts and sheared edges were ground out to prevent them from becoming sites for preferential attack. The finishing of the specimen surface with grit abrasive paper (sand paper) and rinsing of the specimens in distilled water are carried out. Then, degreasing of specimen in acetone and air-dried are carried out. Upon drying, the specimens are immediately weighed to obtain their initial weights. Twelve specimens are used for the test as follows: 6 Aluminum (Al); and 6 mild steel (MS) samples. With a 2M concentration of VA solution, the MS and Al samples are immersed in different plastic containers containing 400ml of seawater with pH value of 7.25 with no (0%) inhibitor added to it. A 5% (400ml) of the VA solution is poured into the measuring cylinder for each sample-Al and MS. The specimens are suspended by the strings and completely immersed in the different percentage test media. The same procedure is carried out for each of the different percentages (i.e. 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%) and a total of 12 solutions are set up. The seawater used has 7.25 pH. At the end of every week (168 hours), the specimens are removed from the corrosive media. Observation and recording of appearance of the specimen, noting sites are done to analyze the effect of the VA solution on the AL and MS used for the STP. Values are obtained and graphs plotted on weight loss (WL) and corrosion rate (CR) versus the time. It is observed that the VA solution has different effect on the STP at different time and percentage of the VA solution introduced into the environment of the pipe. It was also observed that optimum inhibition of coupons is obtained between 15-25% of VA solution during the first four weeks of testing. At the fifth week, the inhibitor was gradually losing its effectiveness. This means that more inhibitor needs to be added at regular intervals in order to sustain the effectiveness of the inhibitor.

The habitat 1110 ‘Sandbanks that are slightly covered by sea water all the time’ is protected in 766 Natura 2000 sites in Europe. Due to its significant structural and functional diversity in particular European countries, there is a necessity of working out specific site indices for the state assessment. Methodology of the monitoring and assessment of habitats from Annex I, II, IV, and V of Habitat’s Directive is gradually expanding; therefore, the first assessment of the state of 1110 habitat in Poland was an expert judgement. The aim of this work was the presentation of methods used in the ‘Sandbanks that are slightly covered by sea water all the time’ state assessment in selected European countries and presentation of the assumptions for the assessment in Poland. This paper is a continuation of the series concerning marine habitats assessment issue. The first article focused on habitat 1160 ‘Large, shallow inlets and bays’.
W Europie siedlisko 1110 ‘Piaszczyste ławice podmorskie’ jest objęte ochroną w 766 obszarach Natura 2000. Ze względu na znaczne zróżnicowanie strukturalne i funkcjonalne siedliska w poszczególnych rejonach istnieje konieczność wypracowania specyficznych dla danego regionu wskaźników do jego oceny. Metodyki monitoringu siedlisk i gatunków z załączników I, II, IV i V Dyrektywy siedliskowej są stale uzupełniane, jednak w Polsce dotychczasowa ocena siedliska 1110 była oceną ekspercką. Celem pracy jest prezentacja kryteriów stosowanych do oceny stanu siedliska 1110 w wybranych krajach oraz przedstawienie ogólnych założeń do przeprowadzenia takiej oceny w miejscach występowania tego siedliska w Polsce. Niniejsza praca stanowi kontynuację cyklu artykułów dotyczącego metodyk oceny stanu siedlisk morskich. Pierwszy artykuł został poświęcony siedlisku 1160 ‘Duże i płytkie zatoki’.

The 15 - cm layer of bottom sediments of the Lake Bukowo was examined. Organic sediments make up to 32% of the Lake Bukowo bottom surface, the mixed sediments - 52% and the sandy ones - 16%. Bottom sediments of this lake displayed a high content of organic matter ca. 28%, nitrogen ca. l. 2%, silica 65% and phosphorus 0.9%. Nitrogen and phosphorus were deposit into sediments in the main form of organic compounds. These sediments were characterized by low content of metals (average: Ca 1%, Mg 0.8 %, Fe 1.3% and Al 1.1%). The pollution of Lake Bukowo increased comparison to 1987.
W jeziorze Bukowo badano 15-centymetrową warstwę powierzchniową osadów dennych pod kątem ich właściwości chemicznych. Stwierdzono, że 32% powierzchni dna tego jeziora zajmują osady denne typu organicznego, 52% - typu mineralnego i 16% - typu piaszczystego. Osady denne charakteryzowały się wysoką zawartością materii organicznej - średnio 28%, azotu 1,2%, krzemionki 65% i fosforu 0,9%. Azot i fosfor akumulował się w badanych osadach głównie w formie związków organicznych. Metale występowały w nich w niewielkich ilościach: przeciętnie Ca - 1%, Mg - 0,8%, Fe - 1,3%, Al - 1,1%. Skład chemiczny osadów był zróżnicowany w obszarze jeziora, w zależności od wpływów czynnika lądowego i czynnika morskiego. W rejonie wpływów wody morskiej steżenia materii organicznej, związków azotowych i fosforowych były najmniejsze, a w rejonie dopływów z ladu składniki te wykazywały bardzo wysokie wartości.

The Mediterranean region has a particular place in geopolitics at the edge of three continents, Europe, Asia, and Africa, and between the Straits of Gibraltar and the Bosporus. This makes it a constant subject of political competition between several European countries and the European Union (EU) as a whole. This area is faced with political, economic, environmental, and social challenges. To meet them the EU requires a common vision and to act in concert. A particular challenge in the context of the Mediterranean region is a drastic drop in water resources combined with environmental degradation. As water is an integral part of human life and habitats, it lays the foundations for complicated hydrologic cycle and interdependencies in all form of life on earth. The most challenging thing is to resolve the problem of “competition for water” between humans and habitats. The idea of self-sustaining development addresses this challenge. Its effective implementation and harmonization requires the inclusion of environmental issues (with water management) in state policies at national and international levels. The article aims at presenting water management as a key challenge to sustainable development with a deductive approach, from the global situation and patterns of conduct to regional practices in the Mediterranean countries.
Region śródziemnomorski zajmuje szczególną pozycję na arenie międzynarodowej. Leży na styku trzech kontynentów, co sprawia, że jest przedmiotem stałego zainteresowania zarówno poszczególnych państw zachodnich, jak i całej Unii Europejskiej. Obszar ten stoi wobec wyzwań politycznych, gospodarczych, ekologicznych i społecznych. Sprostanie różnorodnym wyzwaniom wymaga od UE i partnerów śródziemnomorskich wspólnej pracy i wizji. Szczególnym wyzwaniem w kontekście regionu śródziemnomorskiego jest drastyczny spadek zasobów wodnych połączony z degradacją środowiska naturalnego. Woda jest nieodłącznym elementem życia ludzkiego i przyrodniczego. Tworzy relacje w oparciu o skomplikowany cykl hydrologiczny i współzależności wszystkich form życia na Ziemi. Obniżenie zasobów wodnych pod względem ilościowym i jakościowym może mieć negatywny wpływ na każdą formę życia. Wyzwaniem jest rozwiązanie problemu „konkurencji o wodę” między człowiekiem a przyrodą. Odpowiedzią na to jest idea rozwoju samopodtrzymującego się, zaś skutecznym sposobem jej realizacji oraz osiągnięcia harmonizacji we wszystkich obszarach działalności człowieka jest włączenie kwestii środowiskowych (w tym wody) do przepisów krajowych i międzynarodowych. Celem artykułu jest analiza zarządzania wodą stanowiąca kluczowe wyzwanie dla rozwoju samopodtrzymującego się, uwzględniająca podejście dedukcyjne do globalnych sposobów gospodarowania wodą oraz do regionalnej praktyki państw śródziemnomorskich.

The problem of ballast water has been present in the world for the last hundred years, but it has grown and become more complex with the increasing intensity of overseas traffic. Introduction of various species from different parts of the world threatens flora and fauna, especially regarding small and closed seas, such as the Adriatic Sea. New species cause an interruption of the existing food chain which keeps the natural balance and purity of the sea. Many domicile organisms in the sea have been disappearing due to changes in environmental conditions, which significantly impairs the sea-water quality. This paper deals with different possible ways of sea and port protection from ballast water, starting with administrative measures, up to proposals of technologies by which those waters could be treated. The problem of ballast water is of particular concern in the Montenegrin part of the Adriatic Sea, and the protection proposal is given.

The pathways of energy supply for mixing the deep waters of the Baltic Sea is largely unknown. In this paper, a parameterization of the internal wave drag forces on barotropic motion is developed and implemented into a two-dimensional shallow water model of the Baltic Sea. The model is validated against observed sea levels. The dissipation of barotropic motion by internal wave drag that is quantified from the model results show that breaking internal waves generated by wind forced barotropic motions can contribute significantly to diapycnal mixing in the deep water of the Baltic Sea.

The paper contains the results of natural surface film surface pressure – area experiments carried out in inland waters and shallow offshore regions of the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas during 1990–99 under calm water conditions using the Langmuir trough – Wilhelmy filter paper plate system, which ‘cuts out’ an undisturbed film-covered sea area without any initial physico-chemical sample processing. The limiting specific area Alim (268–3157 ˚A2/molecule−1) and mean molecular mass (0.65–9.7 kDa) of microlayer surfactants were determined from the 2D virial equation of state applied to the isotherms. Film structure signatures were derived from π − A isotherm hysteresis and application of the 2D polymer scaling theory. The stress-relaxation measurements revealed a two-step relaxation process at the interface with characteristic times τ1 (1.1–2.8) and τ2 (5.6–25.6) seconds suggesting the presence of diffusion-controlled and structural organization relaxation phenomena. The results demonstrate that natural films are a complex mixture of biomolecules covering a wide range of solubilities, surface activity and molecular mass with an apparent structural organization exhibiting a spatial and temporal variability.

Bottom-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler measurements indicate that the net transport of water (844 m3 s−1) in the Little Belt makes up only 6% of the total transport between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. This is a smaller percentage than the 9% commonly found in the literature. Owing to barotropic and tidal currents the gross transport is 5 times larger. The net transport is directed towards the North Sea mainly in the top 32 m of the water column but towards the Baltic Sea it occurs in the lower 5 m of the water column. The resulting transport of phosphorus is strongly affected by vertical mixing in an area of hydraulic control in the narrow part of the Little Belt. Comparisons of phosphorus profiles in stratified waters and in the mixing area indicate a yearly entrainment of 15 tonnes P from the bottom water to the surface layer. This vertical transport of P forms part of an internal loop in the general transport between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. Compared to the transport observed 15–16 years ago, the present net phosphorus transport of 163 tonnes yr−1 from the Baltic Sea through the Little Belt is substantially lower.

The response of semi-realistic wind speed increase scenarios to the mean sea level and current regime of semi-enclosed sub-basins in the Baltic Sea is studied with a 2D hydrodynamic model. According to the model output of spatial mean sea levels, an increase in the westerly wind component by 2 m s−1 leads, for example, to a mean sea level rise of up to 3 cm in windward locations in the study area. The sea level change patterns depend on the wind scenario and coastline configuration. The increases in wind speed considered here also lead to enhanced water exchange through the straits, strengthening of the basin-scale circulation, enhancement of up- and downwelling, and increased bottom stresses near coasts.

The Ponto-Caspian cladocera Cercopagis pengoi invaded the Baltic Sea in 1992. For the first time it was recorded in the Gulf of Riga and three years later it appeared in the Gulf of Finland. In the summer of 1999 it had been also found in huge numbers in shallow areas (0.5 - 10 m) of the Gulf of Gdańsk.

The cold intermediate water (CIW, T<8◦C) entering the Strait of Istanbul and its variation along the strait have been studied by using monthly conductivitytemperature- depth (CTD) data sets collected during the period from 1996 to 2000. In the northern exit of the strait, CIW is located between the seasonal thermocline and Mediterranean water originating from the lower layer of the Sea of Marmara. The thickness of CIW decreases from April to October. In the Strait of Istanbul, CIW is observed as a layer of temperature <14◦C. The thickness of this modified cold intermediate water flowing southwards with the upper layer decreases, while its temperature increases along the strait due to mixing with adjacent water. In the southern exit of the strait, the modified cold intermediate water is observed during the period from May to October. If CIW exists in the Black Sea exit region of the strait, modified cold water is found in the Marmara exit region during the same period. The distribution of CIW in the Strait of Istanbul contributes to our understanding of the dynamics of the strait, especially in the summer months.

This paper presents a functional model of river-sea ships (shortly called: SRM) operating in European system of transport corridors. It is composed of two parts: Part I contains a descriptive model of functioning the SRM fleet with taking into account various shipping tasks as well as impact factors (external and internal factors, limitations and criteria). Also, a mathematical model of functioning the SRM fleet, including choice of relevant economic criteria (e.g. profit maximization, capital return period minimization etc), is presented. Results achieved on the basis of the functional model are presented in Part II of the paper.

The first part of the Baltic Sea ecohydrodynamic model, based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), was validated by long-term observations of sea level, salinity and water temperature fluctuations. The modelled sea surface temperature (SST) fields were also compared to satellite images – satisfactory correlation coefficients were obtained. The model bias and efficiency coefficients of the modelled variables in relation to the observed values were determined. The quality of model simulations in relation to measured values was estimated with respect to spatial and seasonal variability in shallow and deep coastal waters as well as in the open sea. The results indicated the high quality of simulations by the hydrodynamic model.
