Opis:
The term roughness is used to describe a specific sound sensation which may occur when listening to stimuli with more than one spectral component within the same critical band. It is believed that the spectral components interact inside the cochlea, which leads to fluctuations in the neural signal and, in turn, to a sensation of roughness. This study presents a roughness model composed of two successive stages: peripheral and central. The peripheral stage models the function of the peripheral ear. The central stage predicts roughness from the temporal envelope of the signal processed by the peripheral stage. The roughness model was shown to account for the perceived roughness of various types of acoustic stimuli, including the stimuli with temporal envelopes that are not sinusoidal. It thus accounted for effects of the phase and the shape of the temporal envelope on roughness. The model performance was poor for unmodulated bandpass noise stimuli.

Opis:
The assurance of high precision alignment of workpieces with low stiffness requires thorough knowledge about the phenomena taking place in the contact area under the influence of forces exerted by actuators. It is indispensable to utilise the model of a contact and deformations taking place in it. In order to solve the problem of contact, the contact geometry was modelled by means of a flat and rough surface model based on stereometric measurements, as well as by means of the finite element method (FEM). In a FEM method, a spherical structure of the surface layer was assumed and only one zone was taken into consideration, i.e. 0.4.Rt (maximum surface roughness). Zone structure allows easy changing of mechanical properties of material during the introduction of data defined by a strengthening curve in the plastic region. The possibility of expanding the model by consecutive zones allows taking into consideration the physical properties in complex analyses of the surface layer. This paper presents the problem of contact related to the alignment and fixing process, a model of contact deformations between a flat and a rough surface, as well as the algorithm for determining the model of a surface profile according to the bearing ratio curve.

Industrial applications require functional surfaces with a strictly defined micro-texture. Therefore engineered surfaces need to undergo a wide range of finishing processes. One of them is the belt grinding process, which changes the surface topography on a range of roughness and micro-roughness scales. The article describes the use of machined surface images in the monitoring process of micro-smoothing. Machined surface images were applied in the estimation of machined surface quality. The images were decomposed using two-dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform. The approximation component was analyzed and described by the features representing the geometric parameters of image objects. Determined values of image features were used to create the model of the process and estimation of appropriate time of micro-smoothing.

Opis:
The formation of ice cover in winter on rivers, channels and run-of-reservoirs, changes flow characteristics significantly. Calculations of water surface profiles or discharge along a river reach with ice cover by means of 1-D models, requires detailed values of the roughness coefficients of the river bed and underside of the ice cover. Numerous studies dealing with roughness coefficients of the river bed with free surface flow were carried out in the past, however, very few investigations were performed on the determination of the roughness coefficient of the underside of ice cover. Data of calculations indicate that this coefficient may vary considerably with space and time, depending on the character of the ice cover, flow characteristics and meteorological conditions. In 1-D models roughness coefficient of the bed and of the underside of the ice cover must be combined into one composite roughness coefficient. The paper presents determination of roughness coefficient of the underside of ice cover based on velocity distributions in the Vistula River cross-sections with ice cover. It may be assumed that vertical velocity distribution has a logarithmic character in the regions near the bottom and ice cover. Taking into account this assumption the procedure for the calculation of Darcy-Weisbach friction factor f and Manning roughness coefficient n is proposed, basing on the data of velocity measurements in a given vertical. It was found that roughness coefficient of the underside of the ice cover varies in a much larger range than the bottom roughness coefficient and depends very much on the character of the ice cover.

Effect of thermomechanical densification of pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) on cutting forces and roughness during milling. The paper presents the results of research concerning the assessment of machinability of pine wood thermomechanically compacted. The assessment was made on the basis of the cutting forces and surface roughness after the milling process. Selected properties of native and modified wood were examined. Based on the research, it was found that compacted wood is characterized by higher cutting forces during milling. The surface quality after milling was examined and the roughness index Ra values were determined. The research shows that the modified wood is characterized by a lower Ra value both along and across the grain. Statistical analysis showed that the modification had a statistically significant effect on the values of cutting forces and the physical and mechanical properties of the tested wood.

Nowadays lot of scientific work inspired by industry companies was done with the aim to avoid the use of cutting fluids in machining operations. The reasons were ecological and human health problems caused by the cutting fluid. The most logical solution, which can be taken to eliminate all of the problems associated with the use of cooling lubricant, is dry machining. In most cases, however, a machining operation without lubricant finds acceptance only when it is possible to guarantee that the part quality and machining times achieved in wet machining are equalled or surpassed. Surface finish has become an important indicator of quality and precision in manufacturing processes and it is considered as one of the most important parameter in industry. Today the quality of surface finish is a significant requirement for many workpieces. Thus, the choice of optimized cutting parameters is very important for controlling the required surface quality. In the present study, the influence of different machining parameters on surface roughness has been analysed. Experiments were conducted for turning, as it is the most frequently used machining process in machine industry. All these parameters have been studied in terms of depth of cut (ap), feed rate (f) and cutting speed (vc). As workpiece, material steel S235 has been selected. This work presents results of research done during turning realised on conventional lathe CDS 6250 BX-1000 with severe parameters. These demonstrate the necessity of further, more detailed research on turning process results.

Opis:
This paper has attempted to scrutinize the bearing performance of a rough short bearing assisted by a ferrofluid with the help of numerical modelling of the Shliomis model. The transverse roughness is calculated stochastically by averaging the Christensen and Tonder models. A non-zero mean is assumed for the probability density function for the random variable that determines the roughness of the bearing which is symmetrical. This attempt is made to create a more pragmatic and applicable situation. Expressions that can signify a dimensionless form of pressure and bearing load carrying capacity are found using Reynolds’ equation. The load carrying capacity equation is then solved numerically with the help of Simpson’s 1/3 rule to analyze the impact on the bearing system. From the graphical representation, it can be concluded that ferrofluid lubrication based on the Shliomis model can significantly neutralize the negative effects of the bearing roughness on its load carrying capacity.

Material separation is one of the basic technological operations. Abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) is a universal cutting method; it is used for almost all structural materials, ranging from easy-to-cut materials such as aluminium alloys to materials that are difficult-to-cut after thermal treatment. In terms of assembly accuracy and product safety, surface quality and edge condition after cutting are of vital importance. Machining with ceramic brushes mounted on the machining centre is one of the methods for improving surface quality and removing burrs after AWJM. The aim of this study is to analyse the influence of machining conditions with ceramic brushes on the surface quality and effectiveness of deburring after abrasive water jet machining of EN AW-7075 aluminium alloy. For all tested brushing treatment conditions lower roughness parameters were obtained compared to the base surface after AWJM. A positive deburring effect was achieved for all fibre types after one brush pass. For the brush with the lowest stiffness fibres a rounded edge was obtained, while for the fibres with higher stiffness – the edges were chamfered.

The article deals with the simulation of single-oscillating grooves superfinishing. A model of the superfinishing tool was created according to the input information about the tool and the superfinishing process. Using this tool, a simulation of the cutting process was performed. The input parameters for the simulation were the cutting conditions, which determined the paths of tools individual grains (process kinematics). The simulation is realized by gradual removal of the workpiece material by individual grains of the tool. The result of the simulation is the profile of the superfinished surface at an evaluation length of 1.25 mm. It is possible to determine the surface roughness parameters from the profile. Creating and displaying multiple profiles side by side creates a graphical model of the superfinished surface. The simulation can be used for numerical simulation experiments, where both material and energy are saved. The article presents one such experiment together with the results – the surface roughness was influenced by individual factors. The simulation results (surface roughness parameters and surface appearance) were compared with the real superfinished surface on the outer ring of the bearing. This surface was manufactured under mass production conditions. The comparison confirmed that a simulation is a suitable tool for research of abrasive machining methods. At the end of the article is a discussion about a possible improvement of the simulation - considering 3D grains of the tool.

Opis:
In this study, the effect of roughness of particles on flotation efficiency along with surface forces among interacting particles was investigated. Glass beads representing smooth spherical particles with a size fraction of -150+90 μm were used. The etching technique was used to produce roughness of different degrees. Microflotation of round+smooth, and its corresponding etched samples were used to evaluate the efficiency of flotation in the case of smooth and rough systems. Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to reveal the interaction forces between the smooth and rough surfaces. According to the results, roughness of particles increased the flotation efficiency. Although the roughness of particles increased with the etching, excess etching time caused a decrease on the roughness and in turn in the flotation recoveries. The interaction forces between the glass beads changed from repulsion to attraction with the increasing hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) concentration. Further, the increase in HTAB concentration caused a change in the reversal of interaction forces from attraction to repulsion for both smooth and rough surfaces. This change started at low HTAB concentrations for rough surfaces compared to smooth ones though the magnitude of interacting forces decreased for the rough surfaces. The extent and kinetics of HTAB adsorption was dramatically influenced by the roughness of particles that affected the interaction forces as revealed by AFM measurements, and governs the flotation efficiency of particles. These results showed that roughness of particles causes significant improvement in flotation recoveries.

Opis:
Surface roughness is a very important physical feature of soil, affecting various soil processes and accuracy of remote sensing data interpretation. Thus, there is a need to describe it quantitatively. The main aim of the paper was to show needs and benefits of collecting quantitative information about soil surface roughness which is the most relevant parameter used as an index to predict water and wind erosion. Surface roughness can reduce soil erosion and soil losses even by up to 31%. Thereby, it increases the development of fauna and flora and improves the structure of soil and its biological quality. In the first section of the paper there are presented definitions of soil roughness proposed by different authors. The next section explains how various factors influence soil surface roughness. Then, the categorization of soil surface roughness discussed in literature is presented. The next part of the paper includes information about a role of soil roughness in agricultural, soil science and a hydrology research. Moreover, soil surface roughness plays an important role in a remote sensing of soils. The knowledge of quantitative soil surface roughness allows more accurate interpretation of the soil properties from remote sensing data, because this soil feature can decrease soil spectra even over 70% and makes their analysis difficult. In addition, deepening knowledge about soil roughness will allow more precise conclusions about the amount of reflected shortwave solar radiation indirectly shaping the Earth’s climate. In the final section, the techniques for measuring and indices for describing soil roughness are shown. However, the authors prefer a photogrammetry technique for collecting these data, because it is quick and easy to use, ensuring high resolution and accuracy of data (about 1 mm) and the image processing is currently simplifid as software to process is absolutely affordable.

Nowadays, growing expectations make it all the time looking for a newer and newer technologies. Many manufacturing companies put savings that can be achieved by improving the manufacturing processes, for example. Machined, consisting of cutting layer of material which is susceptible to changes in shape, volume and dimensions. Delving into this field can be said that in addition to the high degree of innovation, it is possible to also reduce costs without compromising the quality of the product, as in the time of global financial crisis is increasingly important. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of chemical composition on workability through the evaluation of the surface roughness.

Article presents analysis of surface roughness of aircraft and vehicle power transmission system gear teeth made by different Rapid Prototyping methods. Gear box models have been made by two rapid prototyping methods: stereolithography (SLA), three dimensional printing (3DP) and two rapid tooling methods: Vacuum Casting (VC), Low Pressure Injection (LPI). Surface roughness for rapid prototyping methods is determined mostly by layered system of building model. It depends on process parameters: layer thickness and model position in working space of RP machine. Vacuum Casting and Low Pressure Injection are Rapid Tooling technologies. For this technology final surface roughness is a reflection of surface parameters of tools (silicon mould, silicon matrix). The paper presents results of surface roughness measurements of gear made by few RP and RT methods. The most important thing was an analysis of surface roughness made by Rapid Tooling methods. In these methods surface roughness depends on surface parameters of basis RP model. For basis RP models finishing processing was applied. This process improves parameters of the surface. This research process allowed to define the influence of chosen RP and RT method and its parameters on surface roughness of gear tooth. It permitted to order rapid prototyping methods for application of power transmission prototype making process.

This article presents the research results of roughness and topography of the surface of Inconel 718 nickel alloy after shot peening. The evaluation of stereometric properties of the surface layer of the examined material was performed based on the amplitude, height and Abbott-Firestone curve parameters. The shot peening was carried out on the impulse shot peening stand. The impact energy Ez, distance between the traces xs and the ball diameter dk were changed in the range: Ez = 60 ÷ 240 mJ, xs = 0,15 ÷ 0,5 mm, dk = 3,95 ÷ 12,45 mm. The T8000 RC 120-140 device of the Hommel-Etamic company, along with the software, was used for measuring the surface roughness and for determining the material bearing curve. As a result of the machining, the surface roughness was reduced and the selected functional parameters were improved.

The article presents the results of studying the effects of technological parameters of milling upon surface roughness and microhardness of C45 steel objects after laser cutting. The metallographic structure formed as an effect of cutting by laser was also analyzed. The milling was performed on a FV-580a vertical machining centre. Depth of cut and feed per tooth were changed within the following range: ap = 0.09–0.18 mm and f z = 0.02–0.17 mm/tooth. To measure the surface roughness a Surtronic 3+ profile graphometer was used, whereas microhardness was measured with the use of a Leco LM 700AT microhardness tester. The surface roughness was significantly improved as a result of milling. The laser beam input and output zones were eliminated. Only a part of the layer hardened by laser cutting was removed while milling, in effect of which after milling the hardness of surface layer is much higher than hardness of the core.

Understanding of surface roughness of wood based on analysis its structure and density. The main aim of presented paper was to investigate the influence the wood density and anatomical details on surface roughness. The scope of study included samples from ten different species of wood (mainly tropical) because of wide range of density and anatomical difference. The results allow to conclude that the roughness of tested wood species demonstrated variation, depending on the wood section and the measurement direction. In general, radial sections showed higher roughness than tangential sections due to interlocked fibres in tested wood species (fibres cut in various ways on the radial section of the wood). Roughness measured perpendicular to the wood fibres were twice as high as those measured parallel to the grain. Wood density was not an important indicator determining surface roughness for tested wood species. The determining element for the roughness measured across the fibres was the diameter of the vessels. Further research is advisable due to the enormous variability of the structure and properties of wood.

Opis:
Surface roughness parameter prediction and evaluation are important factors in determining the satisfactory performance of machined surfaces in many fields. The recent trend towards the measurement and evaluation of surface roughness has led to renewed interest in the use of newly developed non-contact sensors. In the present work, an attempt has been made to measure the surface roughness parameter of different machined surfaces using a high sensitivity capacitive sensor. A capacitive response model is proposed to predict theoretical average capacitive surface roughness and compare it with the capacitive sensor measurement results. The measurements were carried out for 18 specimens using the proposed capacitive-sensor-based non-contact measurement setup. The results show that surface roughness values measured using a sensor well agree with the model output. For ground and milled surfaces, the correlation coefficients obtained are high, while for the surfaces generated by shaping, the correlation coefficient is low. It is observed that the sensor can effectively assess the fine and moderate rough-machined surfaces compared to rough surfaces generated by a shaping process. Furthermore, a linear regression model is proposed to predict the surface roughness from the measured average capacitive roughness. It can be further used in on-machine measurement, on-line monitoring and control of surface roughness in the machine tool environment.

The article presents comparative research on the effects of milling of concave corners of elements made of aluminum alloy 7075. The work focuses on the study of the impact of changes in technological parameters and types of machining on the obtained geometrical state of the machined samples. Correct milling of the corners requires selection of the appropriate feed rate and the proper engagement angle of the milling cutter. At the corners, tool engagement angle increases, which significantly hinders the execution of stable machining and adversely affects the geometric and qualitative characteristics of the surface in the corners. Study with application of various strategies and technological parameters of milling corners with variable opening angles were carried out. The main parameters of surface roughness of the machined elements were examined. When analyzing the results obtained, conclusions were formulated indicating the relationship between the change of selected technological parameters, with the assumed type of treatment, and the obtained quality parameters of the samples made.

This work depicts the effects of deep cryogenically treated high-speed steel on machining. In recent research, cryogenic treatment has been acknowledged for improving the life or performance of tool materials. Hence, tool materials such as the molybdenum-based high-speed tool steel are frequently used in the industry at present. Therefore, it is necessary to observe the tool performance in machining; the present research used medium carbon steel (AISI 1045) under dry turning based on the L9 orthogonal array. The effect of untreated and deep cryogenically treated tools on the turning of medium carbon steel is analyzed using the multi-input-multi-output fuzzy inference system with the Taguchi approach. The cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut were the selected process parameters with an effect on surface roughness and the cutting tool edge temperature was also observed. The results reveal that surface roughness decreases and cutting tool edge temperature increases on increasing the cutting speed. This is followed by the feed rate and depth of cut. The deep cryogenically treated tool caused a reduction in surface roughness of about 11% while the cutting tool edge temperature reduction was about 23.76% higher than for an untreated tool. It was thus proved that the deep cryogenically treated tool achieved better performance on selected levels of the turning parameters.

In this paper, the kinetic of the three-phase contact (TPC) formation and the flotation recovery of highly hydrophobic solids with different surface roughness were studied in pure water and aqueous solutions of n-octanol. The surface roughness varied between 1 to 100 μm. It was found that there was a strong influence of surface roughness on both kinetics of TPC formation and flotation. The time of three phase contact formation and flotation rate were much faster for rough surfaces in both water and aqueous solutions of frother. Irrespective of the surface roughness, at above a certain frother dose, the attachment time increased and the flotation rate decreased. It was related to the presence of air at the hydrophobic solid surfaces. The mechanism of this prolongation of the time of TPC formation at the solid surfaces with different roughness due to the frother overdosage was discussed, and the experimental data were confirmed by numerical simulations.

Effect of thermomechanical modification of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) wood on machine sanding efficiency. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of thermomechanical modification of pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) on the efficiency of machine sanding. For this purpose, pine wood samples (undensified and densified) were subjected to mechanical sanding. The effect of the modification on the mass loss in the sanding process was investigated and the quality of the obtained surface was examined. Roughness parameters Ra and Rz were used as criteria for the quality of the sanded surface. The study was carried out for three different grit sizes of sanding paper. It was found that the thermomechanical modification of Scots pine wood had a statistically significant effect on the mass loss during sanding and the roughness of the obtained surface. Wood samples subjected to thermomechanical compaction were characterised by lower susceptibility to sanding measured on the basis of weight loss and lower surface roughness.

In this work is shown the result of CFD simulation of hydrodynamic conical bearing lubrication with consideration of the effect of the bearing shaft and sleeve surface roughness. The oil flow in a bearing lubrication gap largely depend on the condition of the cooperating surfaces of a bearing. Surface irregularities are formed already at the manufacturing process and furthermore the quality of the surface may change during operation of a bearing. In this work, as a parameter describing surface condition, the Ks roughness height parameter was taken (i.e. sand-grain roughness height). The hydrodynamic pressure distribution in lubrication gaps of investigated bearings were calculated by using the commercial CFD software ANSYS Academic Research for fluid flow phenomenon (Fluent). Calculations were conducted for bearings without misalignment. The Ostwald-de Waele model for non-Newtonian fluids was adopted in this simulation. The coefficients of Ostwald-de Waele relationship were determined by application of the least squares approximation method and fitting curves described by this model to the experimental data, obtained for some motor oils, presented in previous work. The calculated hydrodynamic pressure distributions were compared with the data obtained for corresponding bearings, but assuming that bearings have smooth surfaces and there is no slip on surfaces. This paper presents results for bearings with different rotational speeds and of different bearing gap heights.

Flow mechanism under roughened solar air heater is quite complex. This paper is an effort towards determining the governing equations for heat transfer and friction factor for inclined spherical balls roughened ducts. With the availability of these equations, it is easier to predict the thermal and thermohydraulic performance of such roughened solar air heaters. The governing equations are derived based on the experimental data generated under actual outdoor condition at the test rig designed and fabricated at the terrace of the Mechanical Engineering Department, the National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur in India, in terms of roughness and flow parameters. Maximum augmentation in Nusselt number and friction factor for varying relative roughness pitch, relative roughness height, spherical ball height to diameter ratio, and angle of attack was respectively found to be of the order of 2.1 to 3.54 times, 1.87 to 3.21 times, 2.89 to 3.27 times and 1.74 to 3.56 times for Nusselt number and 0.84 to 1.79 times, 1.46 to 1.91 times, 1.67 to 2.34 times and 1.21 to 2.67 times for friction factor in comparison to non-roughened duct. The optimum roughness parameters under present investigation have been found.

Providing roughness is an effective method to heat fluids to high temperature. Present paper make use of concave dimple roughness on one and three sides of roughened ducts aimed at determining rise in heat transfer and friction of three sides over one side roughened duct. Three sides roughened duct produces high heat transfer compared to one side roughened. Results are shown as a rise in Nusselt number and friction factor of three sides over one side roughened duct. Experimental investigation was conducted under actual outdoor condition at National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur, India to test various sets of roughened collectors. Roughness parameter varied as relative roughness pitch 8–15, relative roughness height 0.018–0.045, dimple depth to diameter ratio 1–2, Reynolds number 2500– 13500 at fixed aspect ratio (width/hight) 8. Highest enhancement in Nusselt number for varying relative roughness pitch, height, and diameter ratio was respectively found as 2.6 to 3.55 times, 1.91 to 3.42 times and 3.09 to 3.94 times compared to one side dimple roughened duct. Highest rise in friction for three sides over one side roughened duct for these varying parameters was respectively found as 1.62 to 2.79 times, 1.52 to 2.34 times and 2.21 to 2.56 times. To visualize the effect of roughness parameter on heat transfer and friction factor, variation in Nusselt number and friction factor for varying roughness parameters with Reynolds number is shown.

Plane contact problems with the partial slip in the contact area are considered in the paper. To make the problems more realistic, the deformation of roughness of the contacting boundary is involved. The Shatayerman model of roughness is generalized on the case of tangential problems. The problems are treated by the boundary integral method. Examples of the contact of a flat rigid punch and a rigid cylinder with an elastic half-space involving boundary imperfections are studied. The effects of roughness parameters on the distribution of normal and shearing tractions as well as on the stic-slip transition are investigated.

Across she pressing it can be applied to processing of cylindrical external surfaces processing and internal, flat and about different shapes. Examinations have been carried out for C45 steel with the use of fixed load furnisher NK-01 constructed in Department of Marine Materials and Technology. The research results have been presented in the paper and served as a basis for defining which parameters and values have greatest influence on the obtained hardness of the burnished surface. Finally conclusions related to the influence of burnishing on surface layer strengthening of a treated material have been drawn taking into account the results obtained in the research. The influence of effective strain on stereometrical properties and strain hardening at the surface layer of steel C45 after surface plastic working (burnishing) is presented. Characteristic features ofburnishing technology are a lack of thermal phenomena, simplicity of use and low-cost application. Burnishing is a technology used for the production and regeneration of parts of marine machinery, for example, can be used in the manufacture or repair of shafts and crankshafts as finishing. These papers present the influence of technological parameters of burnishing on strain hardening and surface roughness reduction ratio of ship machine elements surface layer.

The paper presents a new extension of the -Ret model to account for both the laminar-turbulent transition and the surface roughness. The new modeling approach takes into account the pressure gradient, turbulence intensity and roughness height and density. In the transition region both the intermittency transport equation and the momentum thickness Reynolds number Ret transport equation, supplemented by the correlation of Stripf et al. (2009) suitable for rough wall boundary layers are used. An additional modification of the SST turbulence model allows for modeling a full turbulent boundary layer over surfaces with sand roughness. A comprehensive validation of the new method using transitional and fully turbulent test cases was performed. Flat plate data with a zero and non-zero pressure gradient test case as well as a high pressure turbine blade case were used for this purpose The studies proved that the new modeling approach appeared to be sufficiently precise and enabled a qualitative prediction of the boundary layer development for the tested flow configurations.

Opis:
Nowadays, great emphasis is placed on increasing the efficiency of machining processes. However, this cannot be done at the expense of quality worsening of the machined surface. In this paper the influence of Wiper geometry on Ra and Rz surface roughness parameters is described when finishing turning of materials used in the aviation industry: austenitic stainless steel XCrNiNb18-9, low alloy steel 14NiCr14 and aluminum alloy A356, as well as the chips generated in the cutting process in terms of shape were assessed. It was found that for the lowest tested feed rate during turning with a Wiper insert, the values of Ra and Rz parameters do not differ significantly from the roughness parameters obtained during machining with a conventional insert. The beneficial effect of feed rate on surface roughness for the Wiper insert is clearly visible above f ≥ 0.12 mm/rev. The biggest difference in roughness parameters was recorded for the highest value of the applied feed f = 0.28 mm/rev. Using conventional insert, Ra and Rz values are almost three times bigger than for Wiper insert. The influence of the cutting speed on the Ra and Rz parameters depends on the type of material being processed. Increasing cutting speed from vc =120 m/min to vc = 200 m/min for stainless steel, Ra and Rz values decrease about 35%. Similar situation noticed for aluminum alloy, but increasing cutting speed decrease Ra and Rz values only about 18%. The situation is different for low alloy steel. Increasing the cutting speed increases the Ra and Rz parameters by about 37%. Rz/Ra ratio shows that for feed rate f ≤ 0.12 mm/rev. cutting process is unstable, because the values are between 5.5–7.5, but should oscillate around 4. Increasing feed rate value to f = 0.2 mm/rev allows to stabilize the process and the ratio value is close to 4. Wiper insert create the same form chips as a conventional insert, using the same value of feed rate.

The technical practice requirements comes to have increased demands on higher productivity, speed and quality of the machining process of various materials. Hard to machine materials, whose machining led to the development of turning with rotating cutting edge are not an exception. The machining process of auto-rotating tool is more complicated than the conventional process of turning, especially for the process of reshaping cutting layers into chips. There is a significant load in the system, that may affect the life of the cutting edge of the tool as well as the whole system and also in the final extent of the qualitative parameters of the workpiece (product / product). The article specifies the knowledge and findings of measurement in machining material 100Cr6 with an auto-rotating tool. The measurements were conducted to evaluate the integrity of the surface (roughness) of the workpiece to the impacts of cutting conditions, in particular the feed and the cutting edge inclination. It also analyzes the presence (size, character, action) of residual stresses concentrated in the surface layers of the workpiece by changing the cutting conditions.

In this paper, an experimental surface roughness analysis in milling of tungsten carbide using a monolithic torus cubic boron nitride (CBN) tool is presented. The tungsten carbide was received using direct laser deposition technology (DLD). The depth of cut (ap), feed per tooth (fz) and tool wear (VBc) influence on surface roughness parameters (Ra, Rz) were investigated. The cutting forces and accelerations of vibrations were measured in order to estimate their quantitative influence on Ra and Rz parameters. The surface roughness analysis, from the point of view of milling dynamics was carried out. The dominative factor in the research was not feed per tooth fz (according to a theoretical model) but dynamical phenomena and feed per revolution f connected with them.

The form, waviness and roughness components of a measured profile are separated by means of digital filters. The aim of analysis was to develop an algorithm for one-dimensional filtering of profiles using approximation by means of B-splines. The theory of B-spline functions introduced by Schoenberg and extended by Unser et al. was used. Unlike the spline filter proposed by Krystek, which is described in ISO standards, the algorithm does not take into account the bending energy of a filtered profile in the functional whose minimization is the principle of the filter. Appropriate smoothness of a filtered profile is achieved by selecting an appropriate distance between nodes of the spline function. In this paper, we determine the Fourier transforms of the filter impulse response at different impulse positions, with respect to the nodes. We show that the filter cutoff length is equal to half of the node-to-node distance. The inclination of the filter frequency characteristic in the transition band can be adjusted by selecting an appropriate degree of the B-spline function. The paper includes examples of separation of 2D roughness, as well as separation of form and waviness of roundness profiles.

The present study aims to unveil the characteristics of fully developed laminar, incompressible, pressure driven non-Newtonian liquid flow in rough circular microchannels. In the present analysis Gaussian isotropic roughness distribution in circular microchannel is considered. The effect of varying surface wall roughness and flow behavior index has been studied numerically for both the pseudo plastic and dilatant fluids. It is found out that while increasing the relative roughness for a particular flow behavior index, the frictional resistance to flow in the microchannel increases and the effect is more pronounced in the case of pseudo plastic fluids. In the case of a pseudo plastic liquid flow for a constant relative surface wall roughness, on decreasing the value of flow behavior index below 1, the frictional resistance to the flow in the channel increases. While in the case of dilatant fluids with increasing the value of flow behavior index from 1 and above for a constant relative surface wall roughness the frictional resistance to the flow in the channel decreases.

Comparative analysis of the surface texture of machine parts can be successfully carried out using statistical tests. The paper presents a methodology of method used to compare the surface texture by applying Hotelling’s T2 test as well as a method used to evaluate surface topography by applying fractal dimension. The tests were carried out on samples produced with the use of face milling process for four types of materials. The following types of steel were used: 40HM, C45, NC6 and WCL. For each type of material, four areas were machined with the same machining parameters. Based on these results a decision was made whether the surfaces, despite the same machining conditions, were significantly different from each other. Furthermore, the analysis indicated that the fractal dimension enabled to characterise signal irregularities in quantitative and qualitative way.

The quality of the machined surface is one of the most important criteria when products are processed. For different materials, there are differentially fitting processing technologies and cutting modes to ensure that the parts have surface roughness in the allowed value range. In this paper, the research on surface roughness of machining tropical wood by milling method is presented. It is necessary to establish and solve the optimal problems with such aims as the highest surface quality, minimum cutting power and the highest productivity in the optimal cutting mode. Using a great amount of experimental planning and many constrained nonlinear optimization problem solving methods, the authors built a process and solved the problem to determine the optimal cutting parameters such as feed per tooth Sz, tool tip radius ρ, depth of cut h, etc. that satisfy the above object. Research object is tropical wood chukrasia and this is the database to design woodworking machines by milling method and choose a reasonable working mode when processing on CNC machines.

The hereby article presents results of experimental tests which prove the possibility of indirect evaluation of the grinded object's quality with the application of monitoring and analysis of selected acoustic emission signal (AE) registered during the machining process. As the grinding process is carried out and the grinding wheel wear progresses, the acoustic emission signal value is shaped adequately to the workpiece surface quality changes. The binding descriptor of changes of roughness profile and material residual stresses is the RMS value of the acoustic emission signal and in particular the statistical features that characterize the distribution of values contained in the signal sample in relation to the average value. The analysis results indicate that the acoustic emission signal is a convenient indicator for evaluation of stresses cumulated in the surface layer of the material and in selected surface geometrical structure parameters.

Opis:
The processes of machining have vital influence on the operating properties of machine parts because they ensure the formation of the required geometrical structure of the working surfaces and the condition of the top layer. In this paper the influence of emulsion mist parameters on Ra, Rz and RSm surface roughness parameters is described when finishing the turning of C45 carbon steel. It was found that cutting parameters have considerably greater influence on roughness parameters in comparison with emulsion mist conditions. When increasing cutting speed from 100 to 300 m/min Ra and Rz values decrease nearly 2 times, but RSm value does not depend on speed. When increasing feed rate from 0.1 to 0.2 mm/rev Ra, Rz and RSm values increase more than twice. Changes of emulsion mass flow and compressed air flow affect roughness parameters reach 9–15% of maximum. It was shown that Parameter Space Investigation method can be used efficiently for quick analysis of tested parameters and optimization of their values.

Opis:
This paper explores the parametric appraisal and machining performance optimization during drilling of polymer nanocomposites reinforced by graphene oxide/-carbon fiber. The consequences of drilling parameters like cutting velocity, feed, and weight % of graphene oxide on machining responses, namely surface roughness, thrust force, torque, delamination (In/Out) has been investigated. An integrated approach of a Combined Quality Loss concept, Weighted Principal Component Analysis (WPCA), and Taguchi theory is proposed for the evaluation of drilling efficiency. Response surface methodology was employed for drilling of samples using the titanium aluminum nitride tool. WPCA is used for aggregation of multi-response into a single objective function. Analysis of variance reveals that cutting velocity is the most influential factor trailed by feed and weight % of graphene oxide. The proposed approach predicts the outcomes of the developed model for an optimal set of parameters. It has been validated by a confirmatory test, which shows a satisfactory agreement with the actual data. The lower feed plays a vital role in surface finishing. At lower feed, the development of the defect and cracks are found less with an improved surface finish. The proposed module demonstrates the feasibility of controlling quality and productivity factors.

Potwierdziły to prace wstępne prowadzone w warunkach warsztatowych. Pełne badania mogą spopularyzować tą zarzuconą metodę i dać wymierne korzyści w postaci znacznego polepszenia stanu powierzchni bez kosztownego szlifowania.
In the paper well-known but rarely used gears generating method called diagonal hobbing is presented. Previous studies of this subject usually were not precise and imperfect. Relationships and formulas which were presented in scientific literature couldn't be directly applied to workshop practice. Unfortunately most of these relationships give wrong results considering accuracy of the gears. There is no other way to obtain satisfying results then by working out detailed analysis concerning kinematic chain of specific machine tool on which the process will be held. In this paper results of previously presented strategy gave satisfactory results. Preliminary investigations and experimental tests which were carried out at workshop environment proved correctness of previously made assumptions. Main investigations consider an influence of selected cutting parameters on surface condition of the gears generated by diagonal hobbing method. In theory by applying diagonal hobbing method we should obtain cross-shaped paltern on the surface of the teeth. Consequently this type of paltern should improve surface roughness of teeth flanks of the gears. Results obtained during tests partially confirmed these predictions. Preliminary tests were carried out on normalizing gears (not hardened). Next step of our investigation will consider hardened gears where we predict better results in case of surface roughness of manufactured gears. Pull investigations might popularize diagonal hobbing and might give many people an advantage of manufacturing very accurate gears without necessity of employing expensive grinding processes.

Opis:
There are several fundamental steps for the technological preparation, which are required to optimize the thermal spray coatings. In order to ensure proper bonding of the coating, important is properly preparation of substrate. The surface of the substrate has to be clean and should have a suitable roughness after previously performed treatment. Knowledge about the effects of process parameters allows designing the coatings obtained with an optimal adherence. Only when all the components of the spraying coating process are used correctly there is possible properly design the technology. The article describes the impact of technological parameters of grit blasting to obtain the roughness of the steel substrate (steel S185) to the process of metallic coatings by cold gas dynamic spraying. Research was carried out by using the Dymet® 412K appliance, designed for applying metal coatings and substrate surface cleaning. Grit blasting is a mechanical method of surface preparation of metal parts. It allows obtaining a high degree of surface cleanliness and a determined roughness. The authors took into account parameters such as operational pressure, spray angle (incidence) of abrasive grit blasting in the axis of the stream and feed rate of used abrasive particles (Al2O3) passed to the nozzle of spray gun. Carried out the multiple regression analysis of the roughness parameters results. It revealed the existence of certain influences and changes of process parameters, which affect on the surface quality. Carried out calculations by using a multiple regression showed that the greatest correlation is between the required roughness and the feed rate of used abrasive particles. The studied roughness was described by the parameters: Ra, Rz, Rt and RSm. Stepped growth (from 0.1 to 0.8 g/s) of abrasive particles feed rate caused a decline of all of the roughness parameters. It has been found that the values of the roughness in the least depend on the operational pressure.

Detection of rolling bearing faults by vibration analysis is an important part of condition monitoring programs. In this paper a new method for detection of bearing defects based on a new concept of local surface roughness, is proposed. When a defect in the bearing grows then roughness of the defective surface increases and measurement of the roughness can be a good indicator of the bearing defect. In this paper a method of indirectly measuring surface roughness by using vibration signal is introduced. Several attached examples including both numerically simulated signals and actual experimental data show the effectiveness of the new, easy-to-implement method.

One of the innovative technology of producing the components is Selective Laser Melting (SLM) belongs to additive manufacturing techniques. SLM technology has already been successfully applied in the automotive, aerospace and medical industries. Despite progress in material flexibility and mechanical performances, relatively poor surface finish still presents a significant weakness in the SLM process. The scope of the present article is the study the influence of selective laser melting parameters such as laser power, scanning speed, exposure time and hatch spacing through additive manufacturing as well as the orientation of the model corresponding to the laser beam on the surface characteristic of the components made from Ti-6A1-4V alloy. By using optimized process parameters, a low surface roughness can be obtained. In research, the machine for the selective laser melting of metal powders Renishaw AM 125 device was used. Based on experiment plan, 32 models were produced, which were examined to define the surface roughness and thus represent an influence of process parameters and the orientation on the model surface quality. The article discusses the fundamental factors determining the roughness that gives invaluable knowledge to improve the surface quality of SLM parts.

Rubbers are interesting materials and are extensively used in many mining industries for material transportation. Wear of rubber is a very complex phenomenon to understand. The present study aims to explain the influence of rock properties on wear of M and SR grade rubber used in top cover of conveyor belts. Extensive laboratory experiments were conducted under four combinations of normal load and sliding speed. The wear of both the rubber types were analyzed based on the rock properties like shear strength, abrasivity index and fractal dimension. A fully instrumented testing set up was used to study the wear of rubber samples under different operating conditions. In general, wear was higher for M grade rubber compared to SR grade rubber. Increase in shear strength of rocks depicts decreasing trend for the wear of M and SR grade rubber at lower load conditions. Moreover, a higher load combination displays no definite trend in both the rubbers. The strong correlation between the wear of rubber and frictional power for all rubber-rock combinations has given rise to the parameter A, which reflects the relative compatibility between the rubber and rock. Increase of Cerchar’s Abrasivity Index of rocks shows gradual enhancement in wear for M grade rubber in all the load and speed combinations whereas, it fails in SR grade rubber due to its higher strength. The wear of rubber tends to decrease marginally with the surface roughness of rocks at highest normal load and sliding speed in M grade rubber. However, the wear of M and SR grade rubber is influenced by the surface roughness of rocks.

Elements made of plastic are metalized to give new properties such as conductivity or corrosion resistance. In this work, experimental work related to the electroless deposition of metallic coatings on plastics was carried out. For this purpose, the copper and nickel coatings were catalytically deposited on elements printed using hard-lightened resin. The effect of the metallization time on the properties of copper and nickel coatings was determined. In addition, the process of deposition metals in the magnetic field was analyzed with different direction of magnetic field to the surface of the samples. The coatings were analyzed by XRF, XRD method and morphology of surface was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

The influence of organic additives on the process of surface electropolishing of AISI 304 type steel was determined. Additives were selected in initial potentiodynamic tests pursuant to the plateau analysis on the current/potential curves. The assessment of the operational effectiveness of additives consisted in determining the relationship between surface gloss after electropolishing and the mass loss of the sample and in determining surface roughness. The applied electropolishing bath consisted of a mixture of concentrated acids: H3PO4  and H2SO4 and the following organic additives were used: triethylamine, ethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether and glycerol. The best electropolishing result, i.e. low roughness and high gloss of stainless steel surface with a relatively low mass loss of the sample at the same time were obtained for baths containing triethanolamine.

The present paper focuses on the shear strength exhibited by rocks and soils when sliding along dry and wet surfaces, with this mechanism of failure being strongly related to the water lubrication phenomenon. It is well known that the frictional behaviour of geomaterials requires multiscale investigation. Under this perspective, experimental evidence of both friction at the grain scale (i.e. interparticle friction) and friction along sliding surfaces of rock and granular soil samples (i.e. surface friction) are analysed by using data from the literature. The review is addressed at linking different scales, stating the differences between rocks and soils in terms of frictional response to sliding and trying to point out still open problems for the research.

In the cutting process, when the cutting edge leaves the material, burrs are often formed on the edges of the workpiece. Due to inconveniences associated with burrs, such as problems with properly fixing the workpiece on the machine for further processing or problems with parts working in assemblies, deburring operations must be performed. In addition to that, burrs may pose danger for workers at the production stage and for customers at the stage of using the finished product. One of the popular deburring methods is brushing. Apart from deburring, brushing can be used to change surface layer properties. The aim of this study is a comparative analysis of the effect of machining with wire and ceramic brushes on microhardness and the surface quality of EN AW-7075 aluminium alloy. Results show that, for all defined brushing conditions, lower surface roughness parameters are obtained when using ceramic brushes rather than wire brushes. In contrast, the use of wire brushes leads to increased microhardness of the surface layer.

Opis:
On ships for connecting pipes in seawater installations, fire and other installations and for joining pipes to fittings or receivers, flange-type couplings are often used. It is important to ensure tightness between pipe flanges (ASME). If the system pressure does not exceed 1.6 MPa, “open” flange packing using flat gasket rings is used. Rubber, textolite, polyvinyl chloride or metals and alloys with good plastic properties (e.g. aluminum, copper, Monel alloy, Armco iron) can be used as a sealant material (depending on pressure in installation). The tightness of the joint determines the quality (geometric structure) of the surface of the flange at the contact point with the gasket. Reduced roughness ensures even distribution of surface mounting pressures on flange joint gasket. This article deals with the assessment of the use of burnishing as a finishing treatment for flange faces and the selection of rolling parameters. Samples used for the tests were made of S235J2 carbon steel. Burnishing treatment was done with the SKUV20 tool. The working element of the tool was in the shape of a roller. Burning was performed using the following parameters: the burnishing force (Fn) – 600 N, 800 N and 1000 N; Feed rate (f): 0.08 mm/rev, 0.13 mm/rev, 0.24 mm/rev; the speed of burnishing (vn) – for a diameter of 55 mm – was 45 m/min, 65 m/min, 78 m/min. The research was carried out on the basis of trivalent plan Hartley. As the output variables (dependent variables), the roughness reduction index (KRa) and the (Su) were adopted. Based on the multiple regression analysis, it was found that the greatest impact on reducing roughness and surface hardening of burnished material has burnishing force. The dependence between dependent variables and Fn is proportional. The effect of the burnishing speed (vn) on the values of KRA and Su parameters is statistically insignificant. Machining of the active surface of the pipe flanges should be carried out with a burnishing force of 1 kN, a feed rate of 0.08 mm/rev and a burnishing speed of 45 m/min.

The paper presents the research results of relationship between surface roughness reduction index KRa and three input parameters: burnishing speed Vn, feed fn and burnishing force Fn., and all combinations of levels of yields N measured for 48 points of experiment. The experiment was repeated 3 times. In order to select the model describing the results of tests, the stepping approximation analysis was performed. It relayed at incorporated into the model in following steps approximation elements function, giving the biggest decrease of the sum of squared deviations. The first approximation was based on the ternary monomial of the powers from 0 to 3 for each input value. This approximation aim was to show, that the index of surface roughness reduction does not depend on the burnishing speed in the made in the area of research. The reduced input parameters to two, i.e. fn and Fn. The plan of the experiment was brought to N = 12 and M = 12. The best approximation of test results obtained in the case of Laurent polynomial with stepping selection of elements. The biggest contribution to the decrease in the sum of squared deviations was element −1 ∙ 3 , and then fn 2. The article shows that in the range fn {0.6:1.2} there was not information on the successful model and the lack of influence of f and Fn on the results of the experiment. It is postulated to retry the experiment for the feed f <0.6.

Roughness of surface of Intraocular Lens plays an important role, which can provide important information on the interaction between the surface of the implanted lens and lens capsule, among others. Although surfaces appear smooth to the naked eye, they are quite rough at the microscopic levels. The paper presents a technique for measuring surface roughness using AFM. It was found that the size of the scan area does not significantly affect the two standards parameters describing the surface roughness profile (Sa and Sq), however, significantly affect the parameters describing the shape irregularities (Ssk and Ska).

Miniaturization of devices and implementation of new technologies create the necessity of application of small cross-section conduits, hence requirements and demand associated with the use of microchannels is growing. Flow and heat transfer models developed and validated for macrochannels do not account for phenomena relevant in microchannels, and the difference increases with decreasing dimensions characterizing the flow and methods of surfaces machining. In this paper examples of microdevices and the effect of macro and microelement surface roughness on devices performances were presented.

Artificial neural network (ANN), a Computational tool that is frequently applied in the modeling and simulation of manufacturing processes. The emerging forming technique of sheet metal which is typically called single point incremental forming (SPIF) comes into the map and the research interest towards its technological parameters. The surface quality of the end product is a major issue in SPIF, which is more critical with the hard metals. The part of the brass metal is demanded in many industrial uses because of its high load-carrying capacity and its wear resistance property. Considering the industrial interest and demand of the brass metal products, the present study is done with the SPIF experiment on calamine brass Cu67Zn33 followed by an ANN analysis for predicting the absolute surface roughness. The modeling result shows a close agreement with the measured data. The minimum and maximum errors are found in experiment 3 and experiment 7 respectively. The error of predicted roughness is found in the range of –30.87 to 20.23 and the overall coefficient of performance of ANN modeling is 0.947 which is quite acceptable.

In recent times, undesirable climatic conditions have been attributed to climate change. The intensity of rainfall has amplified extremely, causing floods in many areas worldwide. It is desirable to regulate and minimize the consequences of floods and excess downpour. Using geospatial data for the development of hydraulic models and mapping of simulation results has become standard practice for floodplain assessment. The objective of the current investigation is to use one-dimensional floodplain modeling of the Bhima River between Lonikand and Rahu using the RAS-mapper tool (HEC-RAS). The modeled river reach is about 67 km long, near the Pune administrative division of Maharashtra, India. The hydrodynamic flow computations were carried out for the years 2005 and 2017. A total of 595 cross sections along the main river was employed for hydrodynamic flow simulations. In this study, cross-sections and past observed flood data have been used to develop a 1-D integrated hydraulic model of the Bhima River. The simulated water levels are also validated with observed water levels and found to be reasonably correlated.

Analysis of sliding friction of WC-Co composite on particleboard. The paper presents the analysis of the coefficient of friction at the contact area between WC-Co composite and particleboard. The four types of WC-Co composite in the form of milling indexable knives for wood materials machining were tested. The tests were carried out on a linear reciprocating tribotester (pin-on-flat), where the sample was the clearance surface of WC-Co indexable knives and the counter-sample was made of three-layer particleboard. Before and after tribological tests, the surface roughness of tested knives was measured. The highest values of friction coefficient were obtained for the type UMG04 of cemented carbide - with nano size of WC grains and the lowest content of cobalt. The average coefficient of friction for selected types of WC-Co correlated with the average increase in surface roughness (the roughness parameter Ry).

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to study the behaviour of transient elastohydrodynamic contacts subjected to forced harmonic vibrations, including the effect of surface waviness for concentrated counterformal point contact under isothermal conditions. Profiles of pressure and film thickness are studied to reveal the combined effects of sinusoidal external load and surface roughness on the lubrication problem. The time-dependent Reynolds' equation is solved using Newton–Raphson technique. The film thickness and pressure distribution are obtained at different snap shots of time by simultaneous solution of the Reynolds’ equation and film thickness equation including elastic deformation and surface waviness. It is concluded that the coupling effects of the transient sinusoidal external load and wavy surface would result in increase in modulations of the pressure and film thickness profile in comparison to the case where the smooth contact surfaces are subjected to sinusoidal external load.

Opis:
In this work the influence of the drawing speed on fatigue strength of high carbon steel wires has been assessed. The drawing process of φ5.5 mm wires to the final wire of φ1.6 mm was conducted in 11 passes, in industrial conditions, by means of a modern Koch multi-die drawing machine. The drawing speeds in the last passes were: 5, 10, 15 and 20 m/s. For φ1.6 mm wires the investigation of fatigue strength has been carried out. In order to explain the effect of drawing speed on fatigue strength of rope wires, the roughness of drawn wires have been also determined. In addition, the numerical analysis of the drawing process on the base of Drawing 2D in which distribution of redundant strain, has been shown. The data of investigations prove the favourable effect of high drawing speed on fatigue strength of drawn wires. It was found that the better fatigue strength of wires drawn at the speed of 20 m/s compared to the wires drawn at the speeds of 5-15 m/s is associated with a better geometric structure of the surface of those wires. In addition to the high fatigue strength of the wires drawn with high speed is related to theirs higher redundant strain. The obtained data investigation can be applied in wire industry while implementing the new technologies of high speed drawing process of high carbon steel wires.

Opis:
A methodology was developed in order to estimate wind erosion by comparing the differences in soil loss with a 3D laser scanner inside a wind tunnel, to relate the change in soil micro-relief to soil loss. We evaluated the effectiveness of a low-cost laser scanner in a wind tunnel for examining the winddependent variation in soil surface micro-topography, thereby enabling soil wind erosion to be quantified both quickly and accurately. We, therefore, studied the effect of soil crusting in an intensive horticultural crop, low-tilled soil (once a year) in cereal cultivation, and tilled soil (several times a year) in an ecological citrus orchard, paying attention to the changes occurring when soils are tilled. Moreover, we observed an aggregation effect of CaCO3 in the wind-erodible fraction, a protective effect of surface stoniness against a direct impact of wind and the incidence of soil particle content. Different behaviour, in terms of random roughness, is due to more stones and/or remnant vegetation being highly resistant to wind in Calcisol, Cambisol, Fluvisol and Arenosol plots, thus increasing surface roughness. In Anthrosol and Leptosol plots, on the contrary, initial roughness was due to large unstable and wind-eroded aggregates which resulted in a decreased surface roughness.

Opis:
This paper presents two triaxial finite element (FE) models: a “full model” and a “quarter model”, representing the contact between the specimen’s rough surface and the ideally smooth and flat surface of the punch. Models have a contact zone that represents the topography of the real surface and has elastoplastic properties close to those of the real contact. The contact zone was entirely modelled on the basis of roughness measurements performed on a real milled specimen made of 5083 aluminium alloy. The developmentof the FE models, the stages in their refinement and the interlinking of the contact zone with the material of the specimen are described. The results of the computed deformations occurring during the specimen contact loading with the punch were compared with the experimental results. The possible causes of the observed deviations of the computer simulation results from the experimental ones were discussed. The models were used to analyse the effect of the specimen’s material properties, i.e. Young’s modulus, yield strength, compressive strength and material hardening, on the deformations in the contact. On this basis a procedure for predicting the parameters describing the contact characteristic in cases of changes in the properties of the subsurface zone is proposed.

In this study, the effects of calcite and mica contents in nepheline syenite (NS) samples beneficiated by high intensity dry magnetic separation and flotation methods on ceramic bodies were investigated in detail. The NS samples were, first, sintered to observe the physical and surface roughness properties, and characterized based on the change of NS samples such as color, shrinkage, water absorption, and surface roughness after the sintering process. L-a-b color and Ra, Rz, Rt values for the NS samples were determined. The decrease in calcite and mica contents affected the surface of sintered specimens positively by reducing roughness values. Additionally, the water absorption values were found to be directly proportional to Ra values for unglazed surfaces. In conclusion, calcite and mica minerals in NS samples negatively affected surface quality by forming pinholes due to dehydroxylation and outgassing reactions in the sintering process.

The paper presents the investigation of the optimum design parameters of a solar air heater (SAH) having wire ribs as artificial roughness by using the Taguchi method. The solar air heater has arc shape roughness geometry with apex upstream flow on the absorber plate. The objective of this paper is to obtain a set of parameters that deliver maximum thermo-hydraulic performance. For this objective, a new parameter the thermo-hydraulic improvement parameter (ηTHIP), has been introduced. For the present analysis, the effects of Reynolds number (Re), relative roughness pitch (P/e), angle of attack (α), and relative roughness height (e/Dh), denoted by A, B, C, and D, respectively, have been considered. An (L18 = 61 · 3 2 ) orthogonal array (OA) was chosen as an experimental plan for applying the Taguchi method. The set of control factors for the solar air heater SAH which delivers the maximum Nusselt number (Nu), and minimum friction factor (fr) – are A6B2C2, and A1B1C3 respectively. To obtain the maximum THIP the experimental set-up requires only one single run using the parameter A6B2C2, hence there is no need to run it all 54 times.

The surface roughness parameter is measured in the cutting feed direction and against it. The parameters of the cutting process, the number of levels and their values were established. Based on these parameters, the research was designed on a complete factorial experiment, randomized with seven blocks. The surface roughness values were measured using a roughness tester. The research method used involved the Romanovski test. The aim of this test was to identify the data affected by aberrant errors, to remove them from the samples and then to repeat the tests for the remaining data strings until all values met the conditions imposed by the test.

Opis:
Testing the tightness of a square joint between oak wood elements. The study was carried out to determine the tightness of square joints between elements made of oak wood. To determine the degree of tightness of these joints, a device measuring the swelling pressure of oak wood under the influence of water humidification was designed. Checking the tightness of joints was carried out for surfaces obtained by machining through: grinding, milling, machine planing and manual planing. Contact angles at the phase boundary wood-water and their roughness achieved as a result of machining were also determined. During the wood swelling pressure test, the values of the preload of square joints were changed. The analysis of the results showed that the tightness of the square joint is influenced mainly by the roughness of the surface obtained as a result of machining and the size of the force of the initial load exerted on the moistened surfaces.

Opis:
In engineering industry the production of components begins with separation of the base material and this technological operation can be time consuming, especially in large-scale production. Such production can be made more efficient by means of laser technology focusing on material cutting. Efficiency of cutting is determined not only by shortening of working time or energy saving, but also by the required cutting quality. In the paper we compare the impact of cutting speed changing and laser beam performance on the cutting edge quality. Based on requirements of dimensional accuracy and preset roughness of the cutting edge, we evaluated the cutting quality of laser in samples of different materials. Measured values of sample dimensions and roughness are compared in conclusions of the paper, where we estimate whether the samples meet specified requirements of dimensional accuracy and roughness of the cutting edge in order to make the production process more efficient.

Opis:
High precise measurement techniques and surface structure analysis are required in advanced fields of interchangeable manufacturing and precision engineering. This study presents the characterization of the surface roughness of the machined milling cutters by experimental precision measurements and the image processing tool. The data obtained are compared to assess the surface characterization parameters and computational data in terms of precision, accuracy, sensitivity, repeatability and resolution. In the experimental measurement phase, the roughness measurements and surface topography characterization were performed in the nanotechnology laboratory using the stylus profilometry and digital microscopy. The computational phase was performed using an image processing toolbox with precise evaluation of the roughness for the machined metal surfaces of the end mill cutting tool. The surface parameter database is established exhibiting an advantage over the traditional method. This study reveals a comparison methodology of the end mill surface parameters using both stylus readings and image processing software for widely used end mill cutting tools that have considerable effect on characterization of sensitive manufacturing surface of millings.

Actual engineering surface cannot be characterized only in two dimensions, basing upon a single profile. For this reason three dimensional analysis was created where surface is represented by a gird of points with coordinated serving as input data for parametric analysis. In the paper general assumptions concerning topography analysis were presented. translation tables for nominally flat and curved surfaces as well as 3D parameters were described. Differences in 2D and 3D meaning were shown. Their significance in some cases makes proper roughness assessment from profile practically impossible. Anisotropy analysis was also presented.

Opis:
Conventional shot peening (SP) is cheap surface treatment widely used to enhance fatigue life of mechanical components [3,4]. Basically, it is shooting small particles (shots) on the surface of the sample. However, the process itself is so complex that a lot of companies are not able to optimally employ it due to the amount of parameters that must be controlled all at the same time. The duplex process consists in two stages of shot-peening treatment. The first one consist of shot-peening with spherical cast steel shots or cut wire shots. During the second stage the samples processed in stage one were subject to shot-peening with glass beads. In this work, RSA-501 aluminium alloy was shot peened using shots of different material and diameter and tested using a measurement of residual stresses and surface roughness. Tests and studies conducted so far on RSA-501 aluminium alloy demonstrate that bombardment by a treatment medium in the form of glass beads or shots of various shapes and diameters induces permanent plastic deformation of the surface layer. The roughness achieved after the shot-peening process was determined for each treatment medium. The largest value of Ra parameter was achieved for cut wire shots and this result is consistent with the above-mentioned theoretical knowledge. This medium is the most aggressive one to the surface being treated primarily due to the sharp edges of shots. The duplex process was successful in obtaining higher values of compressive stresses in surface layer than values achievable in conventional single-stage shot peening process.

Opis:
Surface roughness of particles plays an important role in bubble-particle interaction process. However, the continuous attachment and detachment process have rarely been characterized between the surface of different roughness and air bubble. In this study, the continuous attachment and detachment processes between the surface of different roughness and air bubble were investigated by a highly sensitive microbalance. The bubble–surface interaction process was monitored by a high-speed camera to analyze the geometry parameters, including distance, adhesion diameter, and contact angle. It was found that the bubble-particle attachment time increased with the increase of surface roughness. The magnitude of the repulsive force in the bubble-surface approaching process increased with the increase of surface roughness, while the attractive force in the bubble-particle retracting process decreased monotonically with the surface roughness. The force measured by microbalance was finally compared with the calculated one. The calculated force at the biggest force point also increased with the decrease of surface roughness. These results indicate that coal particles with lower surface roughness, which have less water-filled pores and pillars, is more conducive to flotation due to the lower repulsive force in the bubble-particle attachment process and higher adhesive force in the bubble-particle detachment process, and vice versa.

Surface roughness is an important indicator in the evaluation of machining and product quality, as well as a direct factor affecting the performance of components. A rapidly developing filtering technology has become the main means of extracting surface roughness. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is constantly updating and improving the standard system for filtering technology in order to meet the requirements of technological development. Based on the filters already accepted by the international standard ISO 16610, this study briefly introduces the filtering principle of each filter, reviews the development of each filter in the application of surface roughness, and compares the advantages and limitations of their individual performances. The application range of each filter is summarized and, finally, the future direction of the digital filtering used in surface roughness is extrapolated.
