Opis:
Although the academic interest in media and information literacy (MIL) is ever increasing, there are not many studies that analyze the public perception of media literacy. This article analyses the interrelations between encouragement measures implemented by media policy and the perception of media literacy in society. The research employs data from a national representative survey (May 2019; N=1,017 respondents). The study explores the respondents’ media literacy perceptions; opinions on risks potentially caused by insufficient media literacy skills; and respondents’ experience with MIL activities. The survey results are compared with survey data on media literacy encouragement measures, aims and target audiences obtained from the Media Policy Unit at the Ministry of Culture media literacy partners. The theoretical background is supported by the media literacy ideological model, which explains media literacy within relationships with the social institutions in which it is practiced, as well as social processes. The data results are controversial. Even though more than half of Latvia’s population view their media literacy knowledge as insufficient, 52% of the respondents are not interested in MIL issues. Concerning the consequences of insufficient media literacy skills within society, the respondents focused mostly on threats to children (40%) and general public safety (28%), decrease in welfare (28%), societal regress (25%), fewer opportunities for high-quality education (26%) and Latvia being behind other EU countries (24%). Even though the media literacy encouragement measures in Latvia include activities aimed at various audiences, they have been noticed by only a slight number of respondents (7–10%).

Opis:
With the popular and the political competing for our global electronic attention what is often overlooked are questions surrounding access and participation on social media platforms, which have become contested domains of advertising, recruitment, propaganda, and activism. As the very definitions of what it means to be „literate“ or what constitutes a „text“ continue to change, having the ability to „read“ continues to hold significant importance. Marshall McLuhan argues in The Guttenberg Galaxy that the printing press created a paradigm shift. In removing the mystique from texts and making ideas more accessible not only did literacy rates rise, but for McLuhan, social relations and power dynamics were fundamentally and irrevocably changed. In line with a history of humanity that continually shifts power and social relations through uses of new technologies, this paper explores how new forms of language and social patterns of interactions on social media have created a similarly potent paradigm shift, changing the meaning of existence both online and in person. This is the Googleburg Galaxy.

Opis:
Media literacy is a critical skill, a subset of information literacy, that at this point in history is more important than ever. Students entering higher education generally receive information literacy instruction at the lower division level. However, the skills taught at this level are rudimentary and geared toward introducing students to scholarly and peer-reviewed sources. Conversely, students have relied upon more popular resources in K-12 education and may not have the evaluative skills to more responsibly consume, and ethically use, popular, news, and social media content. Current instruction methods silo instruction between scholarly and peer-review sources for academic use separately from media consumption in everyday life. This separation is problematic as students may achieve academic information literacy and still fall prey to misinformation, they find online and in social situations. While the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework addresses the need for a set of information literacy abilities, the National Association for Media Literacy Education takes this further with their core principles. At California State University, Bakersfield, media literacy is integrated into several information literacy opportunities. However, it is in full-term information literacy instruction, where we most fully develop the concepts and techniques specific to media literacy.

Opis:
The article focuses on aspects of media literacy in digital games and seeks to answer the question whether digital games can develop players' media competences and, if so, in which areas. The article points out the positive aspects of the player's immersion in digital games as a way to develop competencies without the player realizing it. Through a qualitative content analysis with a focus on media competences, it offers an extensive list of games and the competences found in them. The research included 32 digital games from 1997 to 2022. The decisive criterion was the presence of any media in the game (print, radio, television, internet, advertising, music, etc.) with which the player can interact – i.e. use them (read, listen, watch) or create other media products through them. At the same time it distinguishes between the use of media as a supplementary or entertainment element in games and media work as a direct determinant of the further development of the story or gameplay. The article concludes that digital games can indeed teach media competence without the player realising it, but that this has its limits.

Together with the growing level of the digitalization in the field of multimedia, also convergence of media, information and digital literacy have been growing up. In case of the traditional mass media, it was important to have skills to use the media content in a critical, aware and selective way. Nevertheless, in the era of the Internet and extended availability of information in the digital form, the importance of information and digital technologies literacy also grows. It regards to some extent the technical ability to use particular technological solutions, but also forming aware and active consumers and authors of the media content. The main goal of this paper is researching the relation between forming the media literacy as a component of human capital, and the realization the European Union’s targets in the area of building a knowledge-based economy. On the basis of the subject-matter literature and other source materials a hypothesis, which classifies the media education as a key process during creating a single European information space, shall be verified. In the first part of the paper, the author concentrates on presenting the dependence between human, personal and social capital. Next, on the basis of the European definition of media literacy, the author examines capabilities of achieving progress in the field of media education in terms of the present European audiovisual policy.

In the modern world, truth has become an anachronistic value. At the same time, hopes associated with its restitution by the networked crowd have proved futile. The growing dominance of audiovisual media inevitably leads to the formation of a new man, driven more by affection than rationality. Phenomena such as secondary illiteracy, language depletion and the rise of populism are signs of this process. The development of media literacy suggested by theoreticians of education may be an insufficient remedy for the indicated civilization problem. The solution may be returning to basic competences shaped, in particular, by philosophical education, which may become the proper medium for restoring critical reason in society.

This contribution aims to familiarize educators with the unique ways in which videogames convey meaning as a media form and to provide an instrument, based on videogame theory, that educators can easily employ in intermediate and advanced English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms to teach critical media literacy. In order to equip teachers with the skills needed to teach the critical media literacy of videogames, the author reviews relevant videogame theory, including Bogost’s procedural rhetoric (2008a) and Consalvo and Dutton’s (2006) holistic analysis. Important concepts from these schools of videogame criticism are combined with Freire’s (2010) notion of problematizing to create an instrument that can be productively employed by educators to teach students to be critical players of videogames. It is found that the approach offered bridges the gap between theory and student concerns, results in greater personalization on the part of students when they analyze videogames, and is able to help students raise emergent issues that the researcher could not anticipate. It is hoped that educators will share these emergent issues and continue the discussion.

The image of the child raises questions that need to be analyzed and discussed, particularly in the visual messages of the advertisements. The presence or absence of children and the characteristics of their reflections in the media, specifically in the context of television commercials, put forward controversial issues. Due to the easy positioning of the child image, different narratives aim to place the child as a family member, a cute object, or a potential future user. The paper discusses how children´s image is used in the frame of the automobile ads. As the main source of data, internet commercials were given priority. Also, a focus group of 20, and a sample group of 100 children were questioned regarding their reflections on ads and sample actions practiced in the ads. The findings indicate that car ads containing children´s images tend to take precedence. In the ads, the concept of family is portrayed and associated with happiness, comfort, freedom, and trust, etc. While the samples provide examples from all segments of society, representations of white and blond kids in well-off families are more frequent. Childish purity and sensitivity are exhibited and emphasized in the context of car ads: their quality, performance, features, and capacity are always within the limits of the interests of children. If not real cars, the toy versions are enough to set the agenda as long as they are accessible to children to use, touch, and feel.

In the previous research (ANR TRANSLIT, Mapping media literacy practices and actions in EU 28) organisations of journalists were identified as stakeholders in promoting media literacy. Theirrole was seen as essential in promoting credibility as a competence based on the truthfulness and relevance of content and sources. Furthermore, in 2014 they were identified as key actors by UNESCO within the Paris Declaration on Media and Information Literacy in Digital Era. Credibility is still seen as fundamental media capital. Although media organisations were one of the first stakeholders promoting credibility, recent research has showed that their activities in promoting media literacy were outnumbered by NGOs. According to the European Federation of Journalists, one of the main goals of journalists’ organisations is to defend values such as freedom of the press, independency, quality and credibility. In this study the authors research the existing activities of organisations of journalists in promoting media literacy throughout the EU. The results of a survey done within organisations of journalists and the results of content analysis of websites are presented. The authors’ goal is to examine how organisations of journalists are engaged to promote media literacy and to what extent they produce additional activities to tackle disinformation, fake news and media manipulation.

Nowadays, when the flow of fake news in traditional media and on social media platforms has increased dramatically, media and information literacy (MIL) skills are more important than ever. MIL promotes the critical thinking skills that enable people to make independent choices, in particular how to evaluate and choose different information sources and channels, as well as how to interpret the news and information received through those channels. This article explores how young people in Lithuania evaluate the trustworthiness of news. Two groups of students were selected for the experiment: young people who had participated in a basic course in MIL, and young people whose learning was minimally related to MIL. The study was conducted using a survey and eye-tracking device that enabled researchers to record and analyse readers’ real behaviour and to identify the distribution of attention, i.e. the concentration of sight and time spent on particular news elements. The research results show a clear difference between these two groups and thus confirm the importance of media literacy education.

Children were asked questions to learn their opinions about television, tablet computers, the internet, and smartphones. The results revealed that children had knowledge about the media environment and they used it intensively. However, they were not aware of the possible dangers of the media contents substantially. It was understood that children did not get any knowledge or education about media usage and most of the children encountered negative content. The results suggest a need for training in media literacy for children.

It focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of the implementation of media education within the conditions of Czech education, while considering the limits as well as challenges, which teachers and academics trying to get students acquainted with the media world have to face. Important parts of media literacy policies are the conceptual, methodological and theoretical materials that can have a significant impact on the successful establishment of media education in both school and out-of-school education. The interview highlights that even such conceptual materials and tools are subject to rapid obsolescence and it is necessary to continuously innovate and complement them, so that they can reflect the very dynamic development of the media as well as constant changes in the preferences or behaviour of the audience members. These arguments should also be taken into account when preparing future journalists and other media professionals, as well as in dealing with the issue of hybrid threats and fake news.

Neoliberalism and its focus on consumption, disposability, and individualism has managed to undercut ideals of female empowerment and kindness. This paper discusses the problematic approach to commercializing and incentivizing being kind and being strong, specifically as it relates to young girls and women. Through an analysis of clothing and commercials, this paper looks at the commodification of personality traits and empowerment. It is through these mechanisms that marketers commodify kindness -- it is palatable enough to sell, and just far enough away from the word feminism to not upset potential brand loyalists. By taking this soft approach, rather than working to bolster the identities of women and girls and to empower them, these companies in their commercial advertising and clothing options continue to center girls and women as consumers, while failing to challenge the dominant structures in place.

Socio-political changes in the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries in the conditions of geopolitical processes specified by the collapse of the Soviet and socialistic systems, rapid development of information-and-communication technologies have transformed information space. Contemporary Ukrainian journalism and its national information space have been established in interdependence with sociopolitical, economic, cultural-educational development of the independent Ukrainian state. Media were both a mirror and a catalyzer of the socio-political processes. Ukraine’s development in the current conditions of the military aggression and increased information threats creates a necessity to protect its national information space, to improve the system of information security and resist to information operations, and to decrease negative results of the impact of external information. Globalization of the information space and the increased scope of untrue information in the post-truth age require an expansion of the opportunities for media education, a development of critical thinking and enhancement of the level of citizens’ media literacy, their ability to counterstand manipulations both from inside and outside.

Theoretically, the public is engaged in the accountability process, mainly in two ways: it conceives an image of professional quality and it may call journalism to account. Therefore, this study explores the meaning and functionality of media accountability from a users’ perspective: How do news media users perceive media accountability in relation to journalistic quality? Focus group analysis highlights how the mechanism of quality deduction strengthens the link between perceived media accountability and journalistic quality. Supporting the normative-economic rationale, this study identifies media accountability as a quality assessment tool, a quality trade mark and as journalistic value on its own. However, threshold perception clearly discourages news users to engage in accountability processes. It is suggested that news media may benefit from an accessible but proportional media accountability infrastructure.

It draws attention to the functions of media education in relation to civil society, the society of knowledge, and the society of communication democracy. In the modern media civilization, these competences, acquired through formal and informal education, are the basis for conscious functioning in many social roles (eg citizen, consumer) and dealing with disinformation. The last part of the article is dedicated to shaping media competences in young children (2.5-7 years old), who should develop these skills under the care of an adult. The task of educational environments is the systematic implementation of home media education that facilitates the child's functioning in the environment of traditional and new media.

The aim of this study is to present the selected findings of a research into the cooperation of The News Agency of the Slovak Republic with individual types of schools in the Slovak Republic, as well as to create a systematic overview of the current state and trends in this area. We have decided to examine the topic and illustrate its relation to individual types of schools in Slovakia as, within the conditions of the Slovak Republic, it still remains an unexplored area. This is one of the first comprehensive research tasks in Slovakia, which attempts to answer the questions concerning press agencies and schools within the context of media literacy development. The aim of this study is to analyze the cooperation of The News Agency of the Slovak Republic with individual types of school in Slovakia over the period of 2012-2016. We focus on the quantitative and qualitative analyses of secondary data created in the reviewed period within the framework of this cooperation. The second aim of the study is to present the results of research carried out at primary and elementary schools, the aim of which was to find out about the ways educational institutions utilize the services of the press agency within the concept of learning-by-doing when teaching media education. The research sample consisted of 2,164 elementary schools and 794 secondary schools from all regions of the Slovak Republic. We addressed these schools with an 11-item questionnaire examining the quantitative and qualitative aspects of cooperation with the public service News Agency of the Slovak Republic. At the same time, we analyzed the data created within this cooperation over the years 2012-2016. The news service provided by The News Agency of the Slovak Republic represents a tool used at Slovak primary schools, especially in the preparation of school media, as well as at teaching media education and other subjects. Nevertheless, the intensity of its use is undersized and there are still quite a number of schools that do not use this valuable service in their educational activities at all.

Critical thinking, media literacy (MIL) and digital and creative competencies are essential for young people to thrive. School can play a fundamental role in raising awareness towards conscientious and creative media usage, particularly considering today’s adolescents – Gen Z. This is not only the generation most exposed to online contents, but also the one that makes the most use of mobile media to connect, learn, express and actively engage in causes. This research conducted media production activities based on secondary school curricula to explore and promote discussions about citizenship and MIL topics. Digital narratives (DNs) creation activities were co-designed with teachers of various subjects and carried out in two Portuguese schools, involving about 190 students aged between 15 and 18. The results of the exploratory questionnaire to students and the DNs’ content analysis point out that the creation of DNs acts as a lever to promote discussions about citizenship in formal settings and that, despite difficulties related to tools and basic literacies, students appreciate activities that engage them in critical reflection and transformative learning. However, the findings suggest that young people don’t believe that using these languages contributes to making a change or to their voices being heard by adults and institutions.

This research addresses the impact of disinformation and media illiteracy on civil discourse and informed societal activity in the United States. The research provides analysis of the conditions surrounding disinformation and media illiteracy, as well one proposed solution for the problem: a media literacy educational program for both digital and non-digital natives via an international alliance of experts. Initially, the „Digital Divide“ of the early 21st century referenced individuals unable to access digital information with the same efficiency as those individuals in a household with a personal computer. In 2007, the introduction of smart phone technology transformed some of the Digital Divide population by providing information previously restricted to individuals with PC access to anyone who owned a phone. However, frequency of use is not the equivalent of mastery or thorough understanding. In 2016, the disinformation campaigns surrounding the U.S. presidential election, and later popular culture campaigns such as supposed controversy surrounding Disney’s The Last Jedi, emerged as foreign interference with American culture exploiting cultural divides. This research addresses two things: (1) Recognition of a caveat to the Knowledge Gap Theory in 21st century media interaction; and (2) Creation of a media literacy educational program via an international coalition for the sole purpose of combating disinformation..

Media literacy is defined as a set of competencies that helps people critically analyze, understand and create media messages. Teaching children to become media literate emerged as a new field of education in the second half of the 20th century. While the pioneering work of Dewey, Freinet, Gerbner, Hall and Whannel (as cited by Cappello et al., 2011) was influential in the development of media literacy, this article argues for the importance of positioning media literacy in a broader theoretical context. Therefore, the article presents an analysis of media literacy education by relying on two of the founders of modern social thought: Rousseau and Mill. The article demonstrates how Rousseau’s treatise is as timely as ever when it comes to understanding the educational aims of media literacy. Similarly, Mill’s approach helps us in understanding the importance of media literacy education not only in school curricula, but also in many other aspects of social life.

In international comparisons, Finland has often appeared as a frontrunner in promoting media literacy, especially from the perspective of national-level policies and structures. In this study, our aim is to broaden knowledge about the meaning of media education in the Finnish ministerial-level policy framework by examining in which administrative sectors policy documents concerning media education have been published and how the concepts of media education and media literacy have been framed. The results suggest that media education and media literacy are addressed widely across the different administrative sectors in Finland, but mostly by the Ministry of Education and Culture. There is also variance in the ways in which the concepts are presented in the policies. In the article, eight identified frames of media literacy are discussed, including protectionism, cultural participation, future working competences, inclusion, broad media education, democracy, national security, and cosmopolitanism. The article highlights the importance of nuanced understanding of the meanings and limits of media education and research-based policy development.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has been associated with many psychological and social effects, followed by a rise of fake news and false information about the condition. This study's main aim was to deeply understand people’s experiences and precise opinions about social media information on COVID-19. This qualitative study was conducted to examine the COVID-19 social media literacy using the content analysis. Participants in the study were 20 people from Hamadan Province, Iran. Data were analyzed using the MAXQDA software version 2010. Considering the results for the volume of social media literature about COVID-19, 21 subcategories and five categories were obtained. The five categories included purpose with three subcategories such as „sales for economic gain“, constructedness with five subcategories such as profiteering „advertising companies“, audience with one subcategory such as „all people“, format with five subcategories such as „highlighting the disease consequences“, and lifestyles with seven subcategories such as „drinking alcohol“. Familiarity with individuals' views based on culture and context for designing and planning educational literacy programs for media skills and competence in the new media age for distinguishing between fake and credible COVID-19 media messages and critically evaluating media content for all people is essentialespecially in the new media infodemic ecosystem. The themes obtained in the study can be used for designing educational interventions and appropriate assessment tools as well as promoting health media literacy in the field.

The subject of the study is to review the current state of contemporary student journalism. The aim of the case study is to clarify the theoretical background and then evaluation of the state (challenges and limits) of selected student journals on the basis of defined attributes. Part of the authors' goals is also the identification of the most common errors and problems in the analysed school magazines. At the theoretical level, the authors define the main concepts of the issue, characterize the student media and the specifics of the creation of the media. Last but not least, the authors define the position of student media in the educational process and their contribution to education in the field of media education. Based on the theoretical definition of the issue, the authors' approach is to use qualitative analysis of selected student magazines. The case study focuses on six student magazines from six elementary schools in Slovakia, which are involved in a research project focused on material-didactic support of media education teaching at Slovak primary and secondary schools, as well as reflexive-productive media learning via full-time and e-learning courses. In the research part of the case study, the authors approach the journals via qualitative analysis in three defined categories: the content of the journal, the graphic aspect of the journal and the organization of work in the journal / editorial office. Within these categories, journals are analysed in several specified attributes, e.g. elaborated topics, journalistic genres, journal break, colourfulness, editorial process, editing process and others. The conclusion of the case study is to interpret and summarize the most important findings of the research and a set of recommendations that respond to the identified shortcomings of the analysed sample of student journals in the examined points.

W artykule odniesiono zasady „właściwego stosunku do mediów” sformułowane przez Ojca Profesora Leona Dyczewskiego do współczesnej komunikacji marketingowej: reklamy i public relations. Zgodnie z Jego zaleceniami podjęto zagadnienie edukacji medialnej w odniesieniu do wiedzy i kompetencji odbioru reklamy. Opierając się na badaniach Setha Ashleya i współpracowników, opracowano skalę do pomiaru kompetencji obioru treści reklamy zawierającą elementy pomiaru wiedzy na temat 1) sposobów, w jakie twórcy reklamy efektywnie docierają do odbiorców, 2) znaczeń przekazu reklamy oraz 3) reklamowych reprezentacji rzeczywistości. Skalę Ashleya i współpracowników rozszerzono o dodatkowe miary kompetencji. Dodano do modelu dwa nowe składniki: miary dla samooceny umiejętności korzystania z mediów (subiektywnej oceny wiedzy o mediach) i znaczenia, jakie odbiorcy przypisują edukacji medialnej.
The article refers to the principles of “appropriate attitude to the media” formulated by Father Professor Leon Dyczewski to contemporary marketing communication: advertising and public relations. In line with his recommendations, the issue of media education was taken up in relation to the knowledge and competence of advertising reception. Based on the research by Seth Ashley and colleagues a scale for measuring media literacy was developed, with particular emphasis on content creation techniques and reception of advertising. The model includes elements of knowledge measurement about 1) the ways in which media outlets effectively reach their audience, 2) messages & meanings of advertising, and 3) advertising representations and reality. The scale of Ashley and colleagues was extended to include additional media literacy measures. Two new components have been added: measures for self-assessment of media literacy (subjective media literacy) and the importance that receivers attach to media literacy.

Mass media, and especially digital media, have become an important tool of literacy and have increased their use in classrooms for educational purposes. This is of great interest in scientific literacy and Brossard and Shanahan (2006) developed an instrument to evaluate the understanding of scientific terms and basic science concepts. In this quantitative study we analyse the relationship between Spanish digital mass media and scientific literacy in pre-service primary teachers (N = 189). Results showed that these university students have a term knowledge level lower than the one found by Brossard and Shanahan in the USA. On the other hand, conceptual knowledge was not correlated at all to the term frequency in the Spanish digital newspapers considered. The conclusions suggest that participants do not use digital newspapers to improve their science education so a change in students’ use of those digital media from ludic to educational purposes is needed.

Opis:
Artykuł traktuje o potrzebie pedagogiki medialnej i znaczeniu edukacji, szkolnictwa w rozwoju cyberkultury.
Contemporary reality is a product and an element of cyberculture. The world is suspended in virtual reality, which not only penetrates the real world but becomes its creator. Media pedagogy, supported by media literacy, seems to be the key to the ordering of social reality. Education in shaping media competences is one of the main tasks of current education. Properly trained media education and media literacy will allow for the effective use of the media and will enable people to create cyberculture in a responsible and conscious way. At present, however, media education in Poland is not developing in a desirable way. The article deals with the need for media pedagogy and the importance of education in the development of cyberculture.

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest ukazanie znaczenia edukacji medialnej w procesie przygotowania dziecka do funkcjonowania we współczesnej przestrzeni komunikacyjnej i informacyjnej społeczeństwa XXI wieku.
This article aims to show the importance of media education in the process of preparing children to function in the modern communication and information space of 21st century society. Today, the mass media are one of the integral elements of our everyday environment. This is evident in the example of the development of digital media, which in recent decades have become an indispensable part of the environment in which young people grow up. In this context, media education, both in technological and cultural terms, is the educational activity aimed at equipping children with media literacy. The acquired skills help children to develop a conscious attitude and critical reception of media as well as the rational use of them as tools of communication, learning and work. In the article these areas of media education have been identified and discussed, which are associated with the process of socialization of children and placing them into virtual social space. The processes of socialization and enculturation are part of educational activities, they prepare children and youths for life in the digital world and facilitate their entry into a social reality mediated by the media. These actions build resistance to the common threats of modern communication and increase the safety level in this way.

Small children show a lot of media activity: they are perfectly capable of handling new technologies, they have been using them since the first years of their life. What activities they show depends on the family home and the behaviors they observe with their parents. With their support and providing positive patterns, the child can become not only a passive media user, but also an active media content creator, a kind of mediacreator, which over time will have a real impact on the reality in which he grows up. In the article, I present some of the results of the my research, in which I checked what role the media plays in the life of a child in an early school age. I try to answer the question, what media activities are displayed by children – whether it is only passive and imitative, or maybe they are actively creating media content.

Aim. This research study aims to examine the role and activities of key stakeholders in Slovakia who participate in non-formal education activities focused on the issue of critical thinking in relation to media communication. The aim was to gain an overview of the ways and means by which these actors address their target groups and what conceptual approaches they use to increase the level of media literacy at the national level. Methods. Framework analysis of secondary data on Slovak subjects whose non-formal educational activities and tools focus on the issue of critical thinking, disinformation and fake news by increasing the level of media and information literacy of various target groups. Results. The analysis of secondary data showed that representatives of various stakeholders in Slovakia offer different categories of projects and activities to increase the level of media and information literacy of various target groups. The obtained results indicate that the most active providers of non-formal education activities are in the sector of non-governmental organisations and think tanks. Our analysis also aimed to examine what types of educational activities organisations provide. The most significant representation is static online content (various types of educational content available through the website). Conclusions. The presented research results suggest that in terms of the position of key actors, the ways of their involvement in non-formal education processes are sufficiently diversified. They use a wide range of implementation concepts and models to develop critical thinking through non-formal learning methods for different target groups.

Digital competens belongs to one of the key competens in the Hungarian education as well. This study examines the written documents which are related to media literacy with the help of the document analysis method. We have proved the fact, due to the written documents and the devel-opment plans, that with a well-planned and well-built media education we could cover several different cross-curriculum areas and ensure wide range of education goals.

Opis:
The author of the article analyses the current situation of the film and other media in the contemporary core curriculum of public education. The definition of film education, established in the document, is presented on the basis of the qualitative and quantitative analysis. The author uses a broad perspective in order to provide the reader with a comprehensible description that includes various aspects of the current situation. The article begins with the analysis of the core curriculum for lower primary schools and moves on to the upper primary schools focusing on the details of teaching Polish. Then, the author concentrates on the core curriculum for high schools and art classes for all levels showing that the established model of film education is scattered and chaotic. It seems more of a case of an incidental arrangement rather than a deliberate and thought-out planning as there is no proper project of film education as a school subject. That is why, the author of the article uses the term elusive when referring to film education. Another reason for that is the fact that film education as a subject focuses on the usage of ICT. However, media literacy and film education should be perceived as components of cultural education. Films should be discussed and analyzed in a similar way to literature.

Opis:
The article deals with the training of media competence in children of preschool age. We present this aspect in terms of theoretical and practical on the example of the program – “Preschool in the media world” – realized in Non-Public Scientific Integration Nursery Mini College in Kielce. This is one of the ways of media education, which, in the management of the said kindergarten, teaching staff and parents of preschoolers, is necessary in the twenty-first century. Today children are the recipients of the media from an early age. Often they cope well with the support of technology. Despite this, the competence of instrumental not enough, because everywhere are coming to these different types of media messages. Therefore media education should be introduced from kindergarten to accompany children in the media world. Children should be aware of both the benefits and risks of the media. The teacher’s task is to give them directions to the reception of the media to reasonably benefit from them, drawing from both the fun, as well as knowledge.

The state is not able to control all the information flows and channels of obtaining information by ordinary citizens. This is especially felt in the conditions of war, as the enemy constantly changes the forms and methods of destructive influence, resorting to hybrid techniques. This is why media literacy needs to use new mechanisms for its improvement and dissemination. The ability to resist and oppose the information attacks of an enemy will depend on the consciousness and awareness of each individual and society as a whole. This article sheds light on this problem. It is also indicated that disinformation campaigns are becoming more and more widespread and pose a serious threat to critical infrastructure and democratic processes in the state. It is important to understand these tactics and methods are used by actors to spread misinformation and false narratives to manipulate audiences. By recognizing these strategies, individuals, organizations, and governments can take steps to mitigate the impact of disinformation campaigns. This is

In the Information Society era, the actions of states, organizations and individuals depend on access to up-to-date and valuable information, and this depends, to a large extent, on the dynamic development of new information and communication technologies. Providing information security, the author understands as actions aimed at securing citizens, society and institutions of the state against any negative influence in the information sphere. The subject of the author’s interest is social information security. An important issue is the problem of fake news - unreported, false information that most people do not recognize due to their low level of media competence. Frequently false information is deliberately fabricated to reach the mass audience, and the problem is compounded by the fact that more and more people treat social media as the most important source of news.

Seventeen workshops on STEAM and Media Literacy, involving 500 children aged 3-10, their families and other community members, in a pandemic context, was the end result of the third phase of the ‘Digital Citizenship Academy’. This community-based action research project began in early 2015, in a Lisbon neighbourhood of Portugal. The workshops were planned, implemented, monitored and assessed by 29 teachers during an online training initially planned to be developed on site. Despite the Covid-19 outbreak, teachers implemented strategies to overcome the lack of resources and autonomy of many students, especially younger ones, and the training focus remained on the production of scientific, artistic, technological, but also media content. The workshops allowed the creation of media and STEAM products primarily focused on the arts, but in which science, technology, engineering and mathematics were present. Results point to the fact that STEAM projects gain in relevance when associated with Media Literacy activities, and vice versa. Although there is a general feeling that the situation resulting from the pandemic prevented the achievement of more significant results, the training course was suitable to pedagogical practices, provided an opportunity for sharing of experiences, practices and ideas, fostered cooperation and interdisciplinary, and resulted in useful resources.
