The thesis considered in the article is the statement that mild intellectual disability is a demanding disability. Three dimensions were distinguished in the description of the situation of persons with a mild intellectual disability:1. Attributes of the phenomenon of mild intellectual disability2. Attributes of the population of people with mild intellectual disabilities3. Attributes of selected elements of the mesosystem of people with mild intellectual disabilities The key phenomena for these dimensions were analysed. The ambiguity of these phenomena has become the basis for considering the opportunities and threats that they may pose. Due to the extensiveness of the issues raised, the issues discussed are presented in two parts. The present text is considers the first two of the dimensions listed.

The interactive model of vocational rehabilitation includes two key components: the rehabilitated individual and the vocational rehabilitation environment. The interaction of these two elements should contribute to the improvement of vocational competencies of people with disabilities[1]. Due to the fact that parents are considered as the second main contributors (just after teaching staff) of vocational training as well as life and vocational orientation of children and teenagers[2], the family environment can be treated as a significant part of the vocational rehabilitation of people with intellectual disability. Therefore, the aim of this study was to discover how parents of individuals with intellectual disability participate, if they do, in vocational training of their children.

Opis:
The purpose of the paper is to show lifestyles of intellectually handicapped adults in the context of the Andrzej Siciński concept. The paper presents the results of research carried out following the interpretive trend, in the hermeneutic-phenomenological perspective, using the dialogue method. The study shows that the disabled manifest habits indicating a blocked, withdrawal as well as a here-and-now-oriented style. The analysed persons exhibited a searching style only in a small extent. There were no statements indicating a change-oriented style. The respondents adapted passively to the conditions of their lives, they were reluctant to speak about the future and about the need to change something in their own lives. The analysis and interpretation of the research results revealed three incompatible areas: (1) culture patterns (the way of thinking, norms of functioning in a particular community), (2) resources of their environment, and (3) resources of an individual, which explains why the lifestyles of intellectually handicapped people analysed in the study were oriented towards passive adaptation rather than to development and changes.

Children with disabled siblings grow up in specific conditions. The case study presents the profile of a young woman living with a disabled brother. Because of her family situation she has become very understanding and tolerant of people with disabilities. She has no fear of the need to help them, is very responsible and has a sense of duty to such people. However, on the negative side, the woman is afraid of the genetic determinants of the disease and fears to start her own family. She is also afraid that her husband might have a negative attitude towards disability and she has ambivalent feelings about taking over the care of her brother.

Education is a complex process. Very often it is defined as a general set of action aimed at education, which comprised of aims and rules. Exemplification of education are educational institutions, and educational programmes on each its level. Among many of its aims the most crucial is leading the individual to full independence. Independence is a complex process, demanding not only the example but also own and very often verified experiences. Experiences, which allow the individual to recognize own possibilities, needs and roles, which are going to be fulfilled. Independence allows then for asking questions concerning oneself, own place among others, and these always stay in a close bond to own identity. In special education the subject of identity gain greater significance. Pedagogues concentrate mainly on language expression and on actions, by which disabled are expressing themselves. More important become examining if undertaken educational actions allow disabled to perceive themselves as independent individuals. Are they equipped with emancipated, inner strategies of controlling? Or, another way round, is their independence controlled from outside and depends on retrieving inner patterns of behaviours?

Purpose: Maintaining balance in humans involves continuous changes in parameters. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of hippotherapeutic exercises on development of the sense of balance in boys aged 15 to 17 years with mild intellectual disability. Methods: The study examined 50 randomly chosen boys aged 15 to 17 years with mild intellectual disability from the special education centre in Leżajsk, Poland. The study participants were divided into two groups: experimental group, who participated for 3 months in hippotherapeutic classes and the control group, with boys attending outdoor or indoor physical education classes. Before and after completion of the study, both experimental and control groups were diagnosed by means of Accu SwayPlus force plate. The force plate was used to determine alterations in the position of the centre of pressure (COP) on the platform in the frontal and sagittal planes in relaxed standing position with feet spread to the shoulder width and with eye control with respect to the base of support (BOS). The description was based on mean displacement of the centre of gravity (COG), mean velocity of displacements of the COG, mean radial displacement and total length of the COP pathway. Results: In the experimental group, equestrian exercises induced a series of significant changes that pointed to the improved balance reactions. The character of these changes in the positions analysed was similar: values of body sway in the sagittal plane and their range and mean displacements decreased statistically significantly after training. The same tendency was observed for mean radial displacements in the free open position and with closed support surface. Furthermore, the velocity of displacement and the length of the COP’s projection pathway on the support surface in the free open position was also reduced. All significant changes and trends found for the experimental group, which occurred after 3 month of hippotherapeutic classes, suggest improved parameters of balance. Conclusions: The lack of changes in balance parameters in the control group shows that the hippotherapeutic classes significantly develop balance abilities in boys aged 15 to 17 years with mild intellectual disability.

Opis:
The source literature lacks a precise vision of an adult with an intellectual disability. The dominant view, in which the life of people with intellectual disabilities is perceived, is the indication of health, architectonic, employment, and educational barriers, or of the lowered social competencies required for the proper fulfilment of social roles. Is that right? The fates of the graduates of one of the special schools in Poznań, are an attempt to answer that. The subjects include both professionally active and unemployed graduates, women who have established families, and fulfil the roles mothers and wives, as well as, an adult man receiving pension benefits. The stories of Justyna, Patryk, Ania and Kamil, prove that people with mild intellectual disabilities consider vocational work as one of the basic attributes of adulthood. Simultaneously, they imply the need for urgent changes in special vocational education, aimed at minimising the observed discrepancies between the vocational competencies acquired by people with disabilities, and their fitness regarding the modern labour market. The fates of two adult women, Beata and Magda, confirm thatmarriage and family are values held in high regard, remaining an important aspect in the life plans of people with intellectual disabilities. Szymon’s story is an example of a man who, due to somatic disorders accompanying intellectual disabilities, and the overprotective attitude of his parents, is unable to act as a fully mature person. Therefore, the adulthood of persons with mild intellectual disabilities has manyfaces. It seems important to monitor the situation of special school graduates systematically, as, in the constantly changing reality, it will allow them, to be more rationally prepared for the fulfilment of their social life.   .

The article presents the results of a study on the role of social participation (Reinders) in shaping the identity (Luyckx et al.) of people with mild intellectual disability in late adolescence and emerging adulthood compared to those in intellectual norm (N = 127). Three waves of measurement were carried out at semi-annual intervals, using the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS/PL-1) and the Social Participation Questionnaire (SPQ-S). In all the waves people with intellectual disability had a higher level of the moratorium orientation, and at Wave 3 they had a higher level of the transitive orientation. Differences in the levels of identity dimensions were observed in only one wave and only in the case of exploration in depth. The type of social participation has proved to be a factor differentiating the levels of identity dimensions, especially commitment making and identification with commitment, the highest level of which was observed in people with integration and assimilation types. The study responds to the need, expressed in the literature, to focus on specific groups in identity development studies.

Objective. The aim of the research was to verify whether intellectually disabled people are responsive to motor stimulation, and whether the specific physical exercises, besides traditional rehabilitation and occupational therapy, would result in physical fitness enhancement. Materials and methods. The research was carried out on 259 persons with moderate and significant intellectual disability, participants of occupational therapy workshops. They were divided into two groups: a control group that underwent traditional rehabilitation treatment and occupational therapy, and an experimental group that additionally performed feasible physical exercises for 10 months. Participants’ body mass and height were measured to calculate their body mass index (BMI). Physical fitness was assessed with the Eurofit Special test and additional balance tests, at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. Results. The results showed that the body mass of both men and women increased in the control group, and was reduced in the experimental group. The results of the physical fitness tests were more varied, in which the control group obtained similar results in the repeated measurements, and the experimental group significantly improved the initial results after 10 months of performing the feasible physical exercises. Conclusions. The applied physical exercises performed in the experimental group were effective because they caused body mass loss and significant improvement in physical fitness.

Research findings have documented that coping of individuals with mild intellectual disability depends on social and psychological factors (Kościelska, 1998; Zigler, 1999; Switzky, 1999; Kurtek, 2009). The aim of the empirical research was to verify the regulatory role of individual experiences (conscious representation of parental attitudes) in coping of youth with mild intellectual disability in confl icts with parents. In the study of a group of 60 students (age: 14–20) from a special school, psychological methods belonging to a cognitive paradigm were used: te PCR Questionnaire (Parent-Child Relation Questionnaire) by A. Roe and M. Siegelman (1963) and RTSS Questionnaire (Coping in Difficult Social Situations) by Danuta Borecka-Biernat (2003). Both methods were adapted to low reading and understanding skills of the population (shorter items without abstract words). The results of multiple regression confi rmed the model of tendentious perception of object by R.H. Fazio (1986) in regulating coping strategies. Problem-oriented responses in confl icts with parents are explained in 30% of variance by individual experiences of Love (from mother and father as well) and not Demanding (rather Casual) mother. The predictors of aggressive coping tendency were experiences of father’s Rejection and lack of mother’s Attention (15% of variance). Finally the avoidance coping was explained in 10% by the experience of lack of mother’s Love. Obtained data comply to the holistic model of social rehabilitation of mildly intellectually disabled youth.

It was found that the level of readiness of youths from post-primary schools to function in a shared learning space with peers with reduced intellectual performance can be considered as satisfactory. At the same time, there was a significant variation in the results obtained which depended on the demographic characteristics selected, previous contacts with a person with disabilities at school, and the type of interaction distance to which the consent applied. Unfortunately, as the potential distance decreased so did the readiness to integrate learning with peers experiencing a reduced intellectual performance. In addition, a clearly greater readiness for both direct and indirect interactions (at further distances) was characteristic of girls when compared to boys. Furthermore, it has also turned out that students who had direct contact with peers with intellectual disabilities in their school education are characterised by a lower readiness to integrate, when compared to youths who did not have such contacts. The research results justify the need to better prepare students without disabilities to work together with such peers in the school environment.

overall perception of adults with intellectual and/or physical disabilities renders it necessary to consider them as individuals as well as in relation to their families, which are to be understood as natural links to communities. The exceptional situation of the families with intellectually and/or physically disabled children older than school age demands understanding and professional help. Day support centres, which constitute a major influence on the disabled, as well as their immediate environment, are an attempt at addressing these needs. The centres also allow for the achievement of a goal – they provide the families of adult children with intellectual and/or physical disabilities with support in its numerous aspects.

Current scientific publications present different paradigms of masculinity, but research in this area is a relatively new perspective. However, the specific nature of the everyday experience of people with intellectual disability is still neglected and unrecognised. The aim of this article is to show the concept of masculinity from the perspective of men with intellectual disability. The research is placed in the stream of qualitative research using a case study as a method. The subject of the research covers the statements of men with intellectual disability concerning masculinity. The analysis of the research material obtained from 12 interviews allowed for the identification of four types of masculinity.

Opis:
Do nich należą też doświadczenia duchowe i doświadczenia religijne osoby z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną.
According to the socio-ecological model, intellectual disability is a multidimensional state of human existence, which is considered in relation to the requirements of the environment. One of the factors of this model, is the context, indicates that the functioning of a person with a disability is influenced by many internal characteristics of the person and their environment. They also include the spiritual and religious experiences of a person with intellectual disability. This article will discuss issues related to the religiosity of this group of people as important for their functioning. It includes a meta-analysis of the results of research on this issue. The cognitive, emotional-motivational and behavioral components of the religious attitude will be presented. These issues are relatively rarely discussed in the literature on the subject. The analysis of the literature on the subject shows that religiosity is of great importance for the functioning of people with intellectual disabilities. Religious experiences (emotional component) and religious practices (behavioral component) are of particular importance to them.

People with intellectual disability constitute a group of considerable size, who require speech therapy from the earliest stages of development. The conduct of such activity must take into account enormous variances among this section of the general population, resulting from various intellectual abilities, etiology, noted accompanying disorders (e.g. sensory or motor), state of health, and the environment in which the child grows up. In this article, the authors distinguished, from the point of view of speech therapy, a few sub-groups of the intellectually disabled, requiring various therapeutic approaches, methods and work techniques, as well as with varying prognoses.

As a method of training neurofeedback has proved to be effective in education and therapy of children (e.g., with ADHD, autism spectrum or specific learning disorders). However, there are no neurofeedback training protocols targeting individuals with a mild intellectual disability. Therefore, I designed a neurofeedback procedure for children with this disability; it focuses on attention span training. In this study I presented the pre-planned procedure to the child’s parent to determine whether the proposed method is feasible for work with a child with a mild intellectual disability. After learning the parents’ opinion, I indicate the possible further stages of developing a neurofeedback strategy for working with children with a mild intellectual disability. Finally, I demonstrate the future directions of research and planning of neurofeedback procedures for individuals with special needs.

This paper discusses issues related to the participation in culture of adults with moderate intellectual disabilities. The aim of this paper is to present the findings of a study interpreting and constructing participation in culture by members of this group. I was interested in how such people experience culture and how they interpret it and what significance they attach to its various manifestations. This piece of research was located in the current of constructivist and interpretative studies, which has enabled the application of the biographical method. The research project used four individual, in-depth and partially structured interviews and narrative analysis. The narratives told by the interviewees reveal the subjective sense and meaning imparted by people with intellectual disabilities to their own participation in culture. The narratives have shown the difficult adulthood and the resulting problems of everyday life. The biographies of adults with intellectual disabilities living with their parents show the complexity of adulthood and the resulting attributes. Due to the difficulties of everyday life, the reality constructed by the narrators is filled with regret, anger, disappointment, sadness and longing for normality. Negative emotions do not allow them to develop, to open up to people, to build relations with them. This results in a limited participation of adults with intellectual disabilities in culture in a broad sense of the word.

The aim of this study was to characterize the knowledge about the joy in children with mild intellectual disability. The premises relating to the mental functioning of these children suggest that this knowledge is poorer and less complex than the knowledge of their peers in the intellectual norm. The study used the authoring tool to measure children’s knowledge of emotions, including joy. The tool takes into account the cognitive representation of the basic emotions available in three codes: image, verbal, semantic and interconnection between the codes – perception, symbolization and conceptualization, which perform the functions of perception, expression and understanding. The study included children with the intellectual norm (N = 30) and children with mild intellectual disability (N = 30). The results mainly indicate the differences in how happiness is understood by particular groups, to the detriment of children with disability. The character of the results is largely determined by the level of organization of knowledge about joy and accompanying mental operations.

Object literature offers standards of diagnostic procedure for oligophasia. The book market still lacks, however, tools that would be developed for the purpose of logopaedic diagnoses of persons with intellectual disabilities (ID), which could fully assess the speech of a child with oligophasia. Presently, specialists utilise tools used for diagnosing other disorders or create their own research tools. The choice of relevant diagnostic tools, and, as a result – later result analysis, is a complex process mostly due to the great variation of functioning of persons with ID, and due to the lack of developed reference norms for the population of persons with ID (conclusions on language development in this group are by and large quite general, frequently formulated intuitively and without support by empirical studies). As a result, the author concluded an analysis of diagnostic tools available on the book market that could provide aid in the logopaedic assessment of a child with ID, stressing the need to create an original tool adapted for diagnosing the speech disorder of oligophasia.

For proper development and functioning, every human being needs a point of reference, which, in combination with experience, will be the model of his or her path of life. These points are laid out by people who occupy important places at different stages of life. In relationships with them, a person learns the truth about himself, grows up, learns respect, tolerance, and develops empathy. The characteristics of intellectual disability point out that it contributes to the occurrence of certain difficulties in the social functioning of the individual. Therefore, we have focused on the group of people with intellectual disabilities, because we want to know the possibilities of supporting the normalization process of their lives.

At the beginning, three basic educational environments are presented followed by the major aspects of the Catholic religious education: knowledge of God, prayer, and preparation for the sacrament of Penance and the Eucharist.

The issue of social support for the family seems to be very current and significant, especially nowadays, i.e. in the time of fast changes, globalization and consumerism. Parents raising children with intellectual disability experience many kinds of difficulties which are often impossible to deal with without external support. One of the most important forms of such help is information support, which can be defined as providing information on the child’s development, the methods of coping with difficulties, as well as education, treatment and therapy and the possibilities of support. The research group included 80 parents of children with moderate and severe intellectual disabilities. The mothers and fathers answered questions about people, institutions and organizations from which they expected to receive information support. They also stated their expectations about the kinds and forms of information support they needed.

This article consists of three parts. The first made the characteristics of paradigm shifts in the perception of intellectual disability – from the medical model to the social and political and disability in terms of emancipation. The second part is dedicated to the rear movement of parents of persons with disabilities in a sociological theory of social movements and contemporary understanding of new forms of community. The third section presents the most important stages of development of the movement of parents of persons with disabilities in Poland since the 60s to today, indicating the author's classification functions that they perform in the context of emancipation. The author at the beginning of the article poses the question of the role of parents in motion the creation of conditions for the emancipation of people with intellectual disabilities. At the same time it indicates that the movement of the parents may contribute to the emancipation of people with disabilities, by presenting them as autonomous individuals who deserve equal treatment, to support their autonomy and strengthening the sense of agency. Initiatives taken by the parents, or established with their participation entities, they tend to emphasize the role of socio professional people with intellectual disabilities. The change at the same time is the media image of the same disabilities as people with talents, skills, resources or social skills at a high level. On the other hand, the movement of the parents may also contribute to the limitations of the emancipation of people with intellectual disabilities. The emphasis on the social question could result in the presentation and reception with disabilities as dependent, in need of constant care – a consequence as a category helpless in life and socially. Indication of the emancipation of people with disabilities through active participation of parents in the public discourse enables better draw public attention to disability, which may contribute to the better understanding.

Although it may be challenging to unambiguously recognize and define it, the notion of experiencing happiness, a constituent of psychological well-being, is undoubtedly one of the key traits featuring every person, whether intellectually fit or disabled. The feeling of happiness plays a significant role when coping with various types of situations including also the circumstances faced by an intellectually disabled person. Due to the diversity and multeity of the dimensions where it occurs, the experience of happiness can be subject of analyses from various stances, including the viewpoint of an intellectually disabled person. It seems that the disabled individual’s ability to deal with difficulties, which also influences efficiency of the rehabilitation process, is actually determined by the feelings of happiness, content and optimism, all of which remain in a relation with one’s personality, life situation, and conditions in which they live. The article draws attention to the subject of experiencing happiness by and psychological well-being of intellectually disabled people. It emphasizes the possibility of both theoretical and practical applications of assumptions of positive psychology as a requisite condition for the optimization of functioning of intellectually disabled people. Beyond any doubt, due care for the intellectually disabled people’s experience of happiness and psychological wellbeing is one of the most crucial requirements of their rehabilitation process as “positive states of mind (…) provide the power to struggle with adversities of life”

The study aimed at diagnosing the opinions of parents of children with mild and moderate intellectual disability on the forms and significance of leisure time behaviour. The study revealed that parents, siblings, or other family members were most often partners of leisure for intellectually disabled children. All the respondents declare that they know what their children are doing in their leisure time and who they spend it with. Leisure time appears to be the area of limitless rehabilitation opportunities, and therefore it should occupy a significant position both in scientific research and (perhaps predominantly) in practical activities undertaken to help children with intellectual disability. Extensive activity of the school, family environment and special education teachers themselves is required to implement leisure time as a vital element in the process of revalidation of intellectually disabled children.

The world of the social experience and expectations of children with mild intellectual disabilities is very diverse. Such children do not always know how to cope with social expectations. In such situations they tend to withdraw or, conversely, behave improperly, in this way trying to mark their presence. Th e paper presents a pedagogical experiment, during which puppets were used in bibliotherapy classes. The method has already proven effective when working with children with mild intellectual disabilities. The main aim of the project was to develop adaptive behaviours in children with mild intellectual disabilities to include creative actions and the skills of social interaction in their upbringing and school environment and among their peers and to encourage them to seek effective ways to deal with their own difficulties.

The aim of this study was to characterize the knowledge about the joy in children with mild intellectual disability. The premises relating to mental functioning of these children suggest that this knowledge is poorer and less complex than the knowledge of their peers in the intellectual norm. The study used the authoring tool to measure children’s knowledge of emotions including the joy. This tool takes into account the cognitive representation of the basic emotions available in three codes: image, verbal, semantic and interconnection between the codes – perception, symbolization and conceptualization which perform the functions of perception, expression and understanding. The study included children with the intellectual norm (N = 30) and children with mild intellectual disability (N = 30). The obtained results mainly indicate the differences in how the happiness is understood by particular groups, to the detriment of children with disability. The character of the results is largely determined by the level of organization of knowledge about the joy and accompanying mental operations. The results will be discussed, among others, in the context of the adjustment of the programs of lasting increase of happiness for people with intellectual disability.

Attributes of selected elements of the mesosystem of people with mild intellectual disabilities The key phenomena for these dimensions were analysed. The ambiguity of these phenomena has become the basis for considering the opportunities and threats that they may pose. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis of the impact of drama therapy on self-awareness of the role of the body among the intellectually disabled. In particular, it was intended to examine the effects of drama therapy involving improvisation on adolescents with moderate intellectual disability. The study is focused on assessing their levels of selfawareness of the role of the body in interpersonal relationships. The instrument used for the purpose of this study was designed by the author. It consists of a ”Body in action” test, which comprises 16 questions examining the level of self-evaluation of non-verbal behaviours in social interactions. The subjects were administered the test before and after a series of drama therapy workshops. Results indicate the connection between participation in drama therapy workshops based on improvisation and an increased level of the participants’ self-awareness of the role of the body in interpersonal relationships. At this stage of research, however, the conclusions cannot be extended to the whole age-group of the intellectually disabled. This study constitutes a starting point for further exploration of this issue. It outlines a direction, since, based on the results obtained, it can be stated that non-verbal communication plays a significant role in the development of social competences.

The author emphasizes the influence of social attitudes towards an individual on his or her self-perception and also pays attention to what threatens the development of identity in people with intellectual disability. It is said that the most important thing in the process of identity formation is the fulfillment of three basic psychological needs during adulthood: the need for having positive relations with other people, the need for autonomy and the need for competence. The limited opportunities of adult women and men with intellectual disability to realize these needs are connected to attitudes towards people with intellectual disability such as over-protectiveness, compassion, focus on deficits, ignorance, segregation, control and judgments. These attitudes are generated by a set of social stereotypes, according to which a person with intellectual disability is an “ageless child”. People with intellectual disabilities are affected by a lack of autonomy, the impossibility of experiencing their own competence as well as limited social contacts as they stay under control of their closest social environment. These problems are concerned with the areas of sexuality and independent living. The author provides examples of discriminatory attitudes as well as current stereotypes and social beliefs which are an actual barrier to the psychosocial functioning of adult people with intellectual disability with respect to the realization of their sexual needs and needs for autonomy.

The aim of the presented research was to adapt the Test of Problematic Using of the Internet (TPUI) for a group of people with mild intellectual disability and offer a preliminary analysis of its psychometric properties. The TPUI is an instrument that allows the measurement of problematic Internet use. Problematic Internet use is defined as “excessive involvement in the use of certain Internet applications (mainly related to interactivity) with clear features of addictive behaviour, causing psychological, social and health problems” (Poprawa, 2011a, p. 217). The TPUI was subjected to psychometric verification in research involving 178 students with mild intellectual disability. Considering the diverse aetiology of intellectual disability, adolescents diagnosed with a genetic syndrome and adolescents with multiple disabilities were excluded from the study. Firstly, the analysis focused on descriptive statistics and distribution. Subsequently, exploratory, reliability and confirmatory analyses were applied. Finally, instrument standardisation was performed. The preliminary results lead to the conclusion that the Test of Problematic Using of the Internet is probably an instrument allowing a reliable and accurate measurement of problematic use of the Internet among adolescents with mild intellectual disability. Confirmation of these conclusions requires conducting further analyses on a sufficiently large group of students.

Inclusion of able peers into the process of aiding the development of disabled children is beneficial for both groups. Able children have the opportunity to get to know disabled peers better, to understand them and to develop an accepting attitude toward them. Disabled children have the opportunity to learn that their able peers pay attention to them and are willing to play and talk to them. They also have a chance to experience that they can successfully influence other people. What is more, their autonomy increases since they have to relay more on themselves in interaction with peers. In the article the author analyzes the following issues: 1) theoretical basis of peer tutoring; 2) types of teaching interaction between children; 3) preparing the non-disabled peers for the role of tutors; 4) effectiveness of peer tutoring in teaching children with intellectual disabilities; 5) role of the teacher as an organizer of peer tutoring; 6) questions that require verification by future research. sification of the social issued and different possibilities of its interpretation. An important characteristic of this perspective is also the fact that it points out the need of trying to improve democracy. Like Laclau claims, “the moment of imagining of a desire is maybe more important than its accomplishing, because it is the moment that motivates us to action and initiates the creative thinking”.

The goal of the paper is presentation the indexmeasure concerning the classmatesschemes of adolescents’ with mild intellectual disabilities (mid). Psychosocial paradigm in rehabilitation inclines to get acquainted with subjective perspective which encourages to compiling instruments matched to cognitive abilities and social experience of the population. The theoretical approach of the tool is: the Theory of Social Schemes by B. Wojciszke (1986). The essence of these schemes is to see others as acting intentionally. As a key of partnerships (with classmates) there were distinguished two dimensions: help bullying and inclusion isolation which are very common presented in objective research perspective on mid. Due to the limited cognitive abilities of this population the research tool are based on Likerttype scale reduced to 4 options of choice. Moreover the items are formulated in easylanguage based on real episodes. The psychometric procedure included such steps as: preparing a set of items focusing on these experiences, estimation of the content adequacy (by 6 Competent Judges). Then a group of 103 students (55 female and 48 male) with Special Educational Centre (SOSW) aged 18 to 22 years under the equinumerosity representation of both male and female, and rural and urban milieu were selected. Obtained data (with the Statistica 10 and XL STAT programs) made it possible to prove the theoretical accuracy (by factors analysis) and the internal reliability (by Cronbach Alpha) of the tool. Therefore the index have sufficient psychometric properties and may be used to explore the subjective schemes of classmates with mid.

Special needs teachers with degrees from three different universities in southern Sweden participated in the survey. The results show that a majority of the respondents had long experience before they started the special needs training program and they describe the direct encounters with students in the classroom as an important part of their work. Supervision and subject-development also exist, but not to the same extent as classroom teaching.

The present article undertakes an attempt to present the contemporary concept of intellectual disability in the context of the social model of disability. Attention was focused on the definition of intellectual disability, its assumptions and the basic dimensions of the functioning of people with intellectual disability. In addition, it was attempted to assess their compatibility with the postulates included in the social model of disability. As a result of the analysis, it was established that placing a stronger emphasis in the concept of intellectual disability on the interrelations between how it is perceived and who a person with intellectual disability becomes would promote stressing the role of the social environment in their development, in addition to encouraging the support and strengthening the tendency to perceive intellectual disability in the socio-educational dimension.

Opis:
Humans maintain balance in the vertical position through random movements that result from instability of the body supported in two points. These tracking movements are responsible for the motor activity focused on maintaining body balance. The role of the postural control system is to choose a strategy, that is, the behaviour as a response to stimuli and regaining the balance through coordinated activity of the muscles that stabilize the talocrural and hip joints that perform movements in the frontal and sagittal planes. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of equestrian classes on postural balance in the frontal and sagittal balance in healthy boys aged 15 to 17 years and boys at the same age with mild intellectual disability. The study examined 100 randomized boys aged 15 to 17 years with mild intellectual disability and healthy boys. The study participants were divided into two groups: experimental group, who participated for 12 weeks in equestrian classes and the control group, with boys attending outdoor or indoor physical education classes. Before and after completion of the study, both experimental and control groups were diagnosed by means of Accu SwayPlus force plate. Maximum and minimum locations of the position of the centre of pressure (COP) with respect to the base of support on the platform were evaluated in the frontal and sagittal planes. The description of the parameters was based on the arithmetic mean, maximal and minimal value, scatter diagram and percentage distribution of values. Correlation of the parameters was also evaluated. Significant changes were found in the experimental groups after horse-riding classes, which pointed to the improvement in balance response, particularly in the sagittal plane, both in terms of minimal and maximal values. The character of these changes was similar: value of body sway in the sagittal plane was reduced and the higher percentage of minimal values was recorded for each parameter in both planes after the equestrian effect. Correlations were found between maximum position of the centre of pressure (COP) in the frontal plane and minimal and maximal position of the centre of pressure in the sagittal plane. All the significant changes and trends found for the experimental group which occurred after 12 weeks of equestrian classes suggest improved parameters of balance. The lack of changes in balance parameters in the control group shows that the equestrian classes help develop balance abilities in healthy boys aged 15 to 17 years and, to a lesser extent, in those with mild intellectual disability.

Parenthood of people with intellectual disability is still a controversial issue but cannot be avoided because many of them want to have families and be parents. Altogether with introducing the idea of normalization, integration and empowerment they strive more and more intensively for their right to “normal” life. The main doubt is if they can be good parents. Previously the opinion was that intellectual disability makes it impossible and that their children are always in danger of poorer environment, neglect of their needs or abuse. Now factors influencing parenthood abilities are better identified. They are: socio-economic status, family functioning, parents' physical and mental health, child characteristics, social factors and others. Nowadays the main question is not if people with intellectual disability can be parents but how to support them to be good parents.

The symbolic interactionism theory was extremely helpful in preliminary deliberations and the discussed integrated-community flats were based on the conception of total institutions. Therefore, the following questions were asked: What characteristics of a total institution does the integrated-community flat have? Can the integrated-community flat be described as having characteristics of a total institution? A qualitative case study with participant observation was used for this purpose.

The article “Identity of an intellectually disabled person in the light of socio-cultural conditions” is an attempt to answer the following question: How much do social and cultural conditions influence the process of self creating picture of an intellectually disabled person? Each person is formed by environment in which one lives any by people one meets with, it very often occurs without one’s conscious will and intention. These factors belong to the weakest ones in the structure of personality with intellectual disorders. Therefore tradition, prejudice, lack of knowledge or ignorance of social environment may deprive the intellectually disabled person stimuli which could develop one’s personal potential and help in identity moulding. A human being lives in given cultural and social conditions which may favour some of them or handicap and even deprive the others. The author of the paper is looking for the answers for the following questions: Does contemporary culture support a human being in the development in one’s humanity? Isn’t it a danger for preserving one’s identity? What is the picture of a person with intellectual disability in society and what does this picture from – myth stereotypes or reliable scientific knowledge and experience of direct contact with these people? One should have a proper picture of not only a person with intellectual disability but also his/her family whose expresses and duties are multiplied. Changes in social mentality concerning disability are taking place although they are often of declared character which is not supported by authentic readiness for coexistence based on the rule of different rights and equal chances. The picture of people with intellectual disability is still inappropriate to reality, harmful and unfortunately modelling negative attitudes towards them. They perceive themselves in the same way as they are perceived by society. Therefore fully-efficient society is obliged to take responsibility for the shape and quality of relations with disabled people towards greater normalisation of inter-human relationships in all spheres of social life.

The case study method was used to conduct the research. In the first part of this article the authors described two issues: cerebral palsy and intellectual disability. They indicated the causes, as well as the most common symptoms of these developmental disorders. In the next part the authors provided an extensive description of various diagnostic tests. They enabled the researchers to explore, among others, speech expression and perception, as well as phonematic hearing. The results of these different tests were thoroughly analysed. Consequently, it has been proved that the level of child’s linguistic and communication skills corresponds to the results achieved by children with similar deficits and disorders.

This study aims to provide more in-depth knowledge about professionals’ views regarding Internet use among youths with intellectual disability (ID). How do the professionals describe the abilities of the youths with ID when using the Internet for social, romantic, and sexual reasons? What kinds of experiences do the professionals have of these youths’ Internet usage, and how do they talk about their ways of dealing with this? In what ways do the professionals describe their own competence regarding Internet usage among youths with ID aged 16-21 years, and do they express the need for any specific tools? Qualitative research interviews were conducted with 17 professionals, 4 males and 13 females, between the ages of 29 and 58. The professionals described challenges with the youths’ various emotional and intellectual abilities, as well as their technical knowledge in relation to Internet use. The results highlight three themes: A two-fold usage, Between being controlling and permissive, and A lack of strategies. The article discusses the development of a ‘Participation-script’, where a continuous dialogue with the youths with ID exists parallel to a restrictive Net-script. We argue that everyday school situations concern joint decision-making between professionals and pupils with ID. Such an approach to participation is based on relationships, that is, oriented towards the self-understanding and individual agency of youths with ID, as well as to the self-understanding of the professionals involved in the lives of youths with ID.

Support for stage creativity and acting in theater therapy is to encourage participants, i.e. adults with intellectual disabilities, not so much to demonstrate theatrical skills and aesthetic sensitivity, but to discover something new in themselves, important for health and psychosocial well-being. In the therapeutic theater, building a spectacle involves overcoming personal limitations and challenging oneself. The potential benefit of this process may be gaining confidence, an important state in the area of social relations. The article aims to indicate the conditions for raising the level of self-confidence of adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in theater therapy and to indicate the consequences harmful for interpersonal relationships, while self-confidence is associated with more negative attitudes towards other people.

W badaniach wykorzystano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego, a w konstrukcji narzędzia badań posłużono się Kwestionariuszem Stereotypowego Postrzegania Osoby z Upośledzeniem Umysłowym (KSPOUU) autorstwa Marii Chodkowskiej i Beaty Szabały (Osoby z upośledzeniem umysłowym w stereotypowym postrzeganiu społecznym, 2012).
The article presents the results of the analysis of differences between men and women in terms of the intensity of stereotypical beliefs about people with intellectual disabilities. In the research, a diagnostic survey method was used, and in the construction of the research tool the Questionnaire of Stereotypical Perception of a Person with Mental Handicap (KSPOUU) by Maria Chodkowska and Beata Szabała (Osoby z upośledzeniem umysłowym w stereotypowym postrzeganiu społecznym, 2012) was used. The research involved 394 students, including 258 women (65.48%) and 136 men (34.52%) attending grades I, II or III of high school. As a result of the analyses carried out, it was found that although the level of intensity of stereotypes in the examined group was not high, they were not strongly rejected either. In addition, it turned out that the results obtained by women suggest that their beliefs about people with intellectual disabilities are less burdened with stereotypes than the beliefs of men. Research has confirmed that gender can be an important variable in analysing the perception of people with intellectual disabilities.

Opis:
Dreams defined as a form of mental activity that focuses on fulfilling desires, aims, and plans regarding one’s life are a synthetic reflection of a human being’s past and presence, and his or her vision of the future. Exploring dreams has cognitive, ethical, and practical dimensions. It provides knowledge of a person’s inner life and the quality of his or her experiences. Analysis of the dreams of people with moderate intellectual disabilities expresses respect for their humanity. The findings of explorations regarding the dreams of this group of people can serve as a predictor in developing practical solutions to improve the quality of their lives. The paper presents information on the dreams of women with moderate intellectual disabilities. Their dreams refer to something that is beyond them – to the issues of self-esteem, independence, social response to disability, and the features of their situation in life. Their dreams show exclusion from the privilege of adulthood, that is – from independence. They show a strong bond between the women and their mothers, their desire to enhance their lives, and their aiming at stabilization and being among familiar, close people. Observations made in the study suggest the need for institutions that will replace motherly care in the future and will allow an enriched life.
Ukazują silną więź z matką, pragnienie wzbogacenia życia i dążenie do stabilizacji, bycia wśród znanych, bliskich osób.

Opis:
Autistic spectrum disorders (ADS) and epilepsy are common pediatric neurological disorders. Prevalence of both is estimatedat approximately 1% in the population. These two disorderscan appear separately or coexist in the same person, often with concomitant specific developmental disorders and intellectual disability. The comorbidity of ASD and epilepsy is well known and the occurrence of epilepsy in ASD ranges, according to various authors, from 2,7%–46%.The relationship between ASD and epilepsy is bidirectional: patients firstly diagnosed with ASD can develop epilepsy, andconversely, children with epileptic seizures can develop autistic symptoms. The recent studies indicate that epilepsy occurrsmore frequently in patients with ASD [13,7%] than ASD amongpatients with epilepsy [3,4%]. The crucial risk factor in both casesis intellectual disability. The risk of developing epilepsy in patients with ASD according to the literature data ranges from 6–46%. ASD studies indicated that there is no dominant type or epilepsy syndrome. However, most scientists indicate that partial seizures are the most commonly reported. The risk of developing epilepsy is greater in the older children and in patients with lower IQ. On the other hand, children firstly diagnosed with epilepsy can also develop ASD; according to published data the risk is from3,4%–37%, the highest among children with the early onset and with frequent seizures. The higher risk of ASD is also related to other various epileptic syndromes (infantile spasms, Dravet syndrom) and in children with developmental disorders and intellectual disability. In many works, common pathophysiological mechanisms have been shown to underlie both of these diseases Appearance of both could be determined by structural abnormalities in CNS, genetic and environmental factors, metabolic disorders or perinatal injuries.

This literature review analyzes eight specialized papers which focus on issues of the perceptual motor skills of children and pupils with mild intellectual disabilities. Children and pupils with mild intellectual disabilities have deficits in perceptual motor skills. The deficits of adaptive and intellectual skills of these children and pupils may be greater (mainly because of their conceptual and abstract reasoning) than their relative deficits of perceptual motor skills. Stronger perceptual motor skills in children and pupils with mild intellectual disabilities may be the target of school intervention as a means of alleviating problems in adaptive functions.

W badaniach zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego, a do analizy danych wybrano metody statystycznego opracowania, np. Test 2 .
The article is of theoretical and research character. It presents an analysis of opinions expressed by assistance programmes students from Poland and Ukraine on spiritual support for persons with intellectual disability (ID). The research was conducted among first year students of psychology, pedagogy and special pedagogy. Spirituality of man is one of the elements that make up the fullness of humanity. A diagnostic survey method was used in the study and statistical methods were used for data analysis, e.g. Test 2. The findings are not diametrically differentiated by individual variables. The results show that young people from these two countries, who in future will be dealing with individuals with ID, recognize spiritual support for this social group as one of their fundamental rights.

It allows to select activities for children at different stages of development, stimulates thinking, teaches to put the newly acquired knowledge into practice and enables to learn through doing, which in particular raises the level of effectiveness of teaching children with mild intellectual disabilities. The joint teamwork of the whole class on the project helped them to enter the social life of the school, becoming a good plane of inclusion. However, according to the studies, the problem is the knowledge and awareness of possibility of applying this method by primary education teachers to support the school functioning of children with special educational needs including those with mild intellectual disabilities.

The article discusses how students of special educational centres are empowered to enter adulthood. The transition from adolescence to adulthood is difficult for many young people. People with intellectual disabilities may face barriers in achieving their independence. The situation of students of special educational centres is particularly problematic. It involves a difficult family situation, experience of neglect, abandonment, and indifference. What accompanies such young people in the process of becoming independent is oftentimes a sense of loneliness and anxiety connected with leaving the institution and taking up an independent life.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present employers' opinions towards employing people with intellectual disabilities. The possibility of employment is a chance to develop and possibility to limit the social isolation of this group. However the chance for such activity for the people of intellectual disability is low from the point of view of workers of poviat labor offices. Low level of education is the main reason for not employing people with intellectual disability. The vast majority of this group have only primary education, and only a small part has special vocational education. Despite the fact that people have a positive attitude to the professional activity of people with intellectual disability, they are not willing to employ it in their own enterprises. The aim of the questionnaire research conducted at CIOP-PIB in 2020 was to show the opinion about people with intellectual disability as workers and employers opinions toward about employment of this group. The article presents the results of these studies.

The Constitution of the Republic of Poland mentions as one of the principles of electoral law its universality. This means that anyone who meets the requirements of law is entitled to vote. The admissibility of exclusions from this principle is also expressly defined by the law. One of the limitations in the exercise of electoral rights is an intellectual disability resulting in the incapacity of the individual. Meanwhile, Poland’s international obligations resulting e.g. from the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities provides with a necessity of a deeper reflection on the present solutions. The ratification by Poland of the UN Convention has stimulated discussion on the political rights of people with intellectual disabilities, extending the field of debate on the legitimacy of the current form of institution of incapacitation. The aim of this article is to reflect on the current solutions in the exercise of electoral rights by people affected by intellectual disability but not being incapacitated.

Opis:
Grading children is of great importance in the educational process. It allows children to learn about their abilities thus shaping their self-esteem and also to define themselves in relation to other people, points to resources and areas for work, builds motivation to undertake further activity, which is why it is particularly important for students with mild intellectual disabilities. However, the grading process is very complex and requires teachers’ knowledge and skills in this area. The aim of the research was to determine what dilemmas in grading students with mild intellectual disabilities teachers of mainstream schools have. The results obtained show that the grading this group of students gives teachers many difficulties and it is therefore necessary to make many changes in this area to make evaluation a factor supporting the effectiveness of education of children with mild intellectual disabilities, and thus a factor that optimizes their development.

Self-perception is a particularly important determinant of human existence in a broad sense. A multifaceted self-image, its positive perception and acceptance have a significant impact on individual psychosocial comfort, optimal development, and functioning and quality of life improvement. This paper specifically stresses the need for people with mild intellectual disabilities to develop social skills in a broad sense that influence quality of life and that are determined by a positively perceived self-image and the social adaptation level. The partial findings of the author’s research study presented in the paper point to numerous spheres of the participants’ personalities and their adaptation behaviors that constitute an important developmental potential of people with mild intellectual disabilities. The self-perception and social adaptation of people with mild intellectual disabilities is treated as a unique aim of objective scientific inquiry in the article. The issues presented from such a point of view can be considered as valid, justified and aiming to optimize the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities. The paper includes a theoretical discussion and empirical analyses. The theoretical part details the essence of intellectual disability, social adaptation, and self-perception in people with intellectual disabilities. The empirical part provides the methodology of the author’s research study, the findings, and analysis. As a whole, the paper provides a basis for pragmatic conclusions and recommendations.

Opis:
This article presents problematics related to social policy and the system supporting the vocational activity of persons with intellectual disabilities in Poland. Analyses aimed at finding an answer to the question posed in the title are based on the results of a research project entitled Employment and disability. An analysis of the vocational experience of people with intellectual disabilities in Poland, which aimed at an exploration of the policy of the employment of persons with disabilities, practices in the area of employment services, and a reconstruction of the experience of subjects involved in the work situation: job coaches, persons with intellectual disabilities, and coordinators of employment projects. The methodological framework of the project was provided by the grounded theory set in social constructivism as presented in Charmaz’s works. The research material was collected in 25 workplaces employing persons with disabilities in various parts of Poland, mainly by means of in-depth interviews, observation, and field notes. The paper presents only a small  fragment of the research results. The analyses focus on the presentation of the assumptions, goals, and trends of the employment policy, ways of functioning of the system of support of the vocational activity of persons with intellectual disabilities, and the confrontation of these systemic assumptions with the experience of persons involved in the implementation of this employment policy in the Polish reality. The article is therefore a critical analysis of the current policy of the employment of persons with intellectual disabilities, unmasking the existing paradoxes and apparent actions in the system of vocational support and the labour market

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present socio-cultural processes of doing gender categories in women with intellectual disabilities and to identify barriers and limitations which they face on the way of „becoming women”. The study and its analysis are based on the critical approach. The method of data collection was a participant observation conducted during three proprietary workshops on femininity organized for 17 women with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities (5–6 people in a group), attending an occupational therapy workshop. The aim of our workshops was the empowerment of one’s own femininity and strengthening of processes of doing gender by the participants. The analysis of collected material revealed that the process of shaping gender identities of women with intellectual disability is a subject of social control of the local community. Participants of the workshops are well aware that they are adult women and they strive for the realization of cultural patterns of femininity. In their case, however, these patterns are socially regulated and the women themselves internalize certain limitations imposed by the society during the socialization process. They instinctively “know” what they are allowed to do, and what they cannot gain as women with intellectual disabilities.

Opis:
People with intellectual disabilities (IDs) are often recognised as suffering from “social exclusion”. Attempts aimed at combating this exclusion include support in finding employment and preparing them for living independently. Unfortunately, for a large group of people with intellectual disabilities the aforementioned strategies of promoting social inclusion are unattainable, and thus alternative areas of social inclusion are sought after. The arts/artistic work may be one of them. Due to the fact that the study was conducted as participatory action research, the main areas of social exclusion of people with intellectual disabilities were exposed. This allowed for attempting to prevent this phenomenon. In this study, artistic work has become a laboratory of social practices toward people with intellectual disabilities and the solutions created in the realm of the arts may serve as an example for designing a normalising model of support for people with intellectual disabilities in other areas as well.

Z obciążonym w kierunku chorób neurologicznych wywiadem rodzinnym (padaczka i niepełnosprawność intelektualna u brata). Wobec możliwego rodzinnego charakteru schorzenia wykonano panel genetyczny w kierunku najczęstszych mutacji związanych z padaczką. W badaniu wykryto mutację w genie SLC6A8 odpowiadającą za deficyt transportera kreatyny (CRTR). Rozpoznanie potwierdzono wykonaniem spektroskopii MR. U chłopca włączono suplementację kreatyną, argininą i glicyną.
Creatine is an endogenous organic substance used to store and release the energy necessary for metabolic processes in the body. It occurs mainly (98%) in muscles. Small amounts of this component are also found in brain, liver and kidneys. The diseases leading to the synthesis and transport disorders of creatine are called CCDS - cerebral creatine deficiency syndromes. These inborn errors of creatine metabolism include: GAMT – guanidinoacetate methyltransferase deficiency, AGAT – L-arginine: glycine amidinotransferase deficiency and CRTR – creatine transporter deficiency, chromosome X recessive disorders. We present the case of a patient with drug resistant epilepsy, intellectual disability and positive family history (epilepsy and intellectual disability in brother). Due to the possible family disorder we performed the genetic testing for common mutations associated with epilepsy. The SLC6A8 mutation responsible for creatine deficiency syndrome was found. By performing MRI spectroscopy we confirmed the diagnosis. We applied supplementation of creatine monohydrate, arginine and glycine. The frequency of cerebral creatine deficiency syndromes is not known. The most suitable diagnosis is indicating decreased (or lack) peak of creatine in MRI spectroscopy. In AGAT and GAMT supplementation of creatine is applied.
