Opis:
Identical atomic planes of transition-metal disilicides can form different stacking when they are ordered in several combinations of four different positions A, B, C, D. The following arrangements can be formed: AB in C11_b structure of e.g. MoSi₂, ABC in C40 structure of e.g. VSi₂ and ABDC in C54 structure of e.g. TiSi₂ disilicides. The ABC atomic plane stacking along the ⟨111⟩ cubic directions is well known in the fcc lattice, where three basic types of stacking faults are known: intrinsic or extrinsic faults and elementary twin, however, other types of stacking faults can be detected in transition-metal disilicides due to the occurrence of the fourth position D. On the other hand, the faults well known in metallic systems as antiphase boundaries need not be metastable in disilicides. Based on the results of ab initio calculations, it can be predicted which types of planar defects are metastable corresponding to the local minima on the energy surface of generalized stacking faults or unstable when they are represented, for example, by saddle points. The character of dissociation of the dislocation cores is directly related to the existence of metastable stacking faults. Moreover, the space distribution of dislocation cores has a direct impact on dislocation mobility and, therefore, also on macroscopic mechanical properties of materials. The behaviour of extended crystal defects in disilicides that is caused by covalent interatomic bonding, is discussed starting from the geometrical analysis, and it is demonstrated that predictions of materials properties can be deduced.

Opis:
This paper deals with the identification of multidomain configuration in ferroelastic phases of $La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}Ga_{0.9}Mg_{0.1}O_{3-x}$ using polychromatic synchrotron X-ray radiation (Laue method). A nondestructive approach for the determination of domain misorientations, orientation of domain walls and their configuration in the nanosize ferroelastic domain structure was developed. The proposed approach can be used to study the nanosize ferroelastic domain structure in small crystals of submillimeter sizes at different external fields, including temperature. The ferroelastic domain structure in the orthorhombic as well as in the rhombohedral phases of $La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}Ga_{0.9}Mg_{0.1}O_{3-x}$ crystals has been identified. The intersection of walls leads to the formation of a chevron-like pattern. The observed reversibility of domain patterns during temperature cycles is probably caused by the interaction of domain boundaries with point defects, most likely oxygen vacancies.

Hydrogen interaction with vacancies in α-Ti was investigated employing positron lifetime spectroscopy combined with ab initio theoretical modeling of vacancy-hydrogen complexes. Ab initio modeling revealed that multiple hydrogen atoms up to 7 can be trapped at vacancies in the α-Ti lattice. Trapped H atoms are located close to the nearest neighbor tetrahedral sites around the centre of vacancy. Lifetimes of positrons trapped at vacancies associated with various numbers of hydrogen atoms were calculated. Positron lifetime measurement of H-loaded α-Ti samples revealed that phase transition into the hydride phase introduced dislocations. Vacancies were created by H loading as well and agglomerated into small vacancy clusters.

In the present work positron annihilation spectroscopy was employed for investigation of hydrogen-induced defects in Pd. Well annealed Pd samples were electrochemically charged with hydrogen and development of defects with increasing hydrogen concentration $x_{H}$ was investigated. At low concentrations (α-phase, $x_{H}$ < 0.017 H/Pd) hydrogen loading introduced vacancies, since absorbed hydrogen segregating at vacancies lowers remarkably the vacancy formation energy. When hydrogen concentration exceeds 0.017 H/Pd, particles of palladium hydride (PdH) are formed. Stress induced by growing PdH particles leads to plastic deformation which generates dislocations and vacancies in the sample.

Defect studies of Nb irradiated with 10 MeV electrons were performed in the present work by means of positron annihilation spectroscopy. The lattice defects were characterized by positron lifetime spectroscopy. Moreover, defect depth profiles were studied by slow positron implantation spectroscopy. The experimental investigations were accompanied by first principles theoretical calculations of positron parameters. It was found that irradiation-induced vacancies in Nb specimens are surrounded by H, which causes a shortening of the lifetime of trapped positrons. The influence of a Pd and Cr over-layer on the H concentration in the Nb specimens was examined.

Transverse magnetoresistance was studied in monocrystalline GaAs:Te doped above the equilibrium doping limit and annealed to partially deactivate donor impurities. It is shown that in a sample with partial deactivation of Te impurities, which exhibits structural fluctuations in microscale, both strong positive and some negative magnetoresistances arise, which are difficult to understand within the relaxation time approximation in degenerated homogeneous semiconductor. It is discussed that a consideration of the role of spatial fluctuations (in carrier concentration, conductivity, etc.), e.g. as proposed by Herring, allows for an understanding of positive component of magnetoresistance observed in the sample with a distinct microscopic structural disorder. With the aim to better understand the transport in GaAs:Te, a model material doped above the doping limit, we discuss both positive and negative components of measured magnetoresistance.

In the paper turbine blades made from single crystal CMSX-4 superalloy were investigated by X-ray diffraction methods (topography, Ω-scan mapping) complemented by scanning electron microscopy observations. By the X-ray diffraction topography method several misorientation defects were visualized as well as dendrites arrangement. It was discussed that tip of the airfoil and thin walled area of the turbine blades located near the trailing edge can accumulate more growth defects than other airfoil part, due to the complex shape of the mould.

Theoretical analysis of the ferro-elastic domain structure of a $La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}Ga_{0.9}Mg_{0.1}O_{2.925}$ crystal in three different crystallographic phases is presented. Parameters of these configurations are obtained using group theoretical approach, the method of spontaneous deformation as well as theoretical interpretation of twinning resulting from mechanical deformation (mechanical twinning theory). In the three phases of $La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}Ga_{0.9}Mg_{0.1}O_{2.95}$ - trigonal, orthorhombic and monoclinic - the parameters of ferro-elastic domain structures are determined; namely the quantity of orientation states, symmetry elements of connection between states, orientations and types of domain walls, tensors of spontaneous deformations of the perovskite-type cells for every orientation state, elements of twin shifts, which are needed for the reorientation of some orientation states to others. By using the found parameters of bidomain configurations a mechanism is proposed, which causes chevron-like domain configurations in compounds with martensitic phase transitions.

Symmetry relations between the domain states in $GdFeO_{3}$ type crystals have been obtained using group-theoretical analysis for prototype and ferroelastic space groups. Models for possible domain pairs are developed. The ion locations on the domain boundary were estimated as intermediate positions between the sites in crystal structure of neighboring domain states. It is shown that the crystalline structure of the boundary approaches to the prototype phase structure - the ideal $ABO_{3}$ perovskite-type structure, however certain deformations remain. In addition to the shifts of the all ions the tilts of oxygen octahedra of the some type and related displacements of A ions should take place during the switching of orientation states. The tilts of octahedra and displacements of A ions are sufficient to form translation states (antiphase domains). Antiphase domains can have boundaries between themselves basically along the three faces of the orthorhombic cell.

Suitable techniques for the growth of high-quality single-crystal diamond are needed in order to use single-crystal diamond in power devices. Because the ion plantation technique cannot be used for diamond doping, a drift layer and a conduction layer for a diamond power device were grown by chemical vapor deposition. An important challenge in this field is to reduce the dislocation density in the epitaxial layer. The dislocation density was found to increase during the chemical vapor deposition process. Because a defective surface is one cause of increased dislocation density, the use of a UV-polished substrate having no scratches due to mechanical polishing was investigated.

This paper is focused on four different commercial oxide-dispersion-strengthened ferritic steels (MA 956, ODM 751, MA 957 and ODS Eurofer) with different chromium content and the change of their microstructure after helium ion implantation. The samples were implanted with kinetic energy of ions up to 500 keV and the implantation depth was up to 1.2 μm. The implantation was performed at Institute of Nuclear and Physical Engineering, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. The samples were observed prior and after the implantation by positron Doppler broadening spectroscopy with slow positron beam (energy up to 36 keV) which is one of the most suitable techniques due to its sensitivity to surface and subsurface layers up to 1.6 μm. The results showed visible change of defect presence in all samples and defect depth profiles are in a good accordance with SRIM software calculations displaying the Bragg peak. According to measured data, ODS Eurofer (9% Cr) seems to be the most radiation resistant from the group of all investigated steels and MA 956 (20% Cr) as the most radiation affected steel.

The effect of selector geometry on the dendrites growth and defects formation in the selector-root area of the blade were analyzed. The Laue diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction topography were applied. It was found that, during crystallization of the selector, the dendrite cores, after reaching the surface of mould, may bend, if the angle between dendrite cores and the mould surface was equal to 12°. When the angle was equal to 24° the growth of dendrites has been stopped. It can be stated that the defects, which appeared in the selector were inherited by the root part.

Manganese dioxide samples were prepared from fluorine containing electrolytes with additives of $Co^{2+}$ ions. Atomic absorption spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis were the methods of the samples characterisation. Manganese dioxide at the presence of cobalt forms nanosized ramsdellite structure crystallites of mostly needle-like morphology with significant content of hydroxide groups. The main phase state in manganese dioxide samples obtained at the presence of cobalt is $γ-MnO_{2}$ with ramsdellite structure and low content of intergrowth defects. The sample doped both with lithium and cobalt can be indexed to a hollandite-type structure (tetragonal; space group I4/m) of $α-MnO_{2}$.

Measurements of X-ray scattering from very highly doped GaAs:Te single crystals as a function of doping level and thermal treatment (annealing temperature) are reported. Reversible diffuse X-ray scattering occurs after sample annealing below a certain temperature. Presented results indicate an inhomogeneous arising of impurity-impurity correlations in GaAs:Te solid solution. Observed features of diffuse X-ray scattering in reciprocal space can be well understood within Krivoglaz theory of scattering due to spatial fluctuations of solute atoms pair correlation function and related lattice deformations. Good coincidence of diffuse X-ray scattering with the free electron concentration changes caused by an annealing is reported. Free electron concentration drop accompanying impurity correlation strongly suggests a certain form of impurity bonding.

Optical absorption and photoconductivity investigations of nominal pure and Mg²⁺ doped β-Ga₂O₃ single crystals have been carried out. Additional bands in the UV (3.6-4.6 eV) and near-IR (0.4-1.2 eV) spectral regions were found in optical absorption and photoconductivity spectra. A correlation between Mg²⁺ doping, annealing in oxygen atmosphere as well as optical absorption and photoconductivity bands were established in gallium oxide. Electronic transitions from shallow traps and F-centers were observed in the IR spectral region (0.4-1.2 eV). Absorption and photoconductivity in the UV region are related to deep acceptor levels created by native defects and impurities.

Opis:
The electrical and optical properties of semiconductors are largely determined by the defects and impurities they contain. Without a doubt, hydrogen is the impurity which exhibits the most varied and exotic properties. In most semiconductors, it is found in three charge states and four configurations. It forms (at least) two types of dimers as well as small and large precipitates such as platelets. H also interacts with impurities and defects. It removes or changes the electrical activity of many shallow and deep centers, and catalyzes the diffusion of interstitial oxygen (in Si). Sometimes, it exhibits quantum tunneling and is associated with unusual effects such as Fermi resonances. But one of the most exotic forms of hydrogen in GaAs and Si is the interstitial H$\text{}_{2}$ molecule, which appears to play a critical role in processes such as the "smart cut". It is the only interstitial molecule observed (so far) in semiconductors. In GaAs, it behaves like a nearly-free rotator, with properties very much as one would expect them to be. But in Si, the early experiments were puzzling. No ortho/para splitting was observed, the symmetry appeared to be C$\text{}_{1}$, the single HD line was at the wrong place and had the wrong amplitude, and other features seemed strange as well. Recent experimental studies have now resolved many issues. However, the behavior of the simplest molecule in the Universe proved to be a tough nut to crack, which goes to show that devils can be a lot more fun than angels after all.

The ionic dopant additives have different mechanisms of their influence upon MnO₂ electrocrystallisation process and depending on dopants added the following polymorphs are stabilised: α -MnO₂ (hollandite, I4/m) - NH₄⁺; γ -MnO₂ (ramsdellite, Pbnm) - Co²⁺, Fe²⁺; layered polymorph δ -MnO₂ (birnessite, C2/m) - Cr³⁺. The defect states of intergrowth method in ramsdellite matrix and twinning, OH groups studied by X-ray diffraction and the Fourier transform infrared mtehod, respectively, indicate their high content in case of Fe²⁺ and Co²⁺-doped manganese dioxide. CVA oxygen reduction reaction peaks were established after experiments in alkaline electrolytes and dioxygen (argon, air) atmosphere. Activity of doped samples studied is comparable with other published data. Both doped with Co²⁺ and Fe²⁺ samples display maximal currents and some distinctive features in oxygen reduction reaction.

In this work, the boriding of binary (Ni-Ti) and ternary (Ni-Ti-Cu) shape memory alloys was carried out in a solid medium at 1173 K for 8 h using the powder pack method with Ekabor-Ni powders. Characterization of boride layer formed on the surface of alloys was identified by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. TiB₂, NiB₂ and SiC phases in the boride layer of borided binary (Ni-Ti) and ternary (Ni-Ti-Cu) shape memory alloys was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The microhardness and thickness of the boride layers were measured. The obtained hardness values show a hardness anomaly due to porosity and structural defects with increase of Cu content, while a decrease in the value of hardness moving from the boride layer to main structure was observed.

High-resolution photoinduced transient spectroscopy has been applied to investigating the effect of the 1 MeV neutron fluence on the electronic properties of radiation defects in Czochralski grown silicon in magnetic field. A new approach to the analysis of the photocurrent relaxation waveforms as a function of time and temperature has been presented. It is based on using a two-dimensional numerical procedure with implementation of the inverse Laplace transformation for creating images of the sharp spectral fringes depicting the temperature dependences of the thermal emission rate for detected defect centers. In the material irradiated with the fluence of 3×$10^{14} cm^{-2}$, the dominant traps with activation energies of 75 meV and 545 meV are tentatively identified with an aggregate of three Si interstitials and the trivacancy, respectively. In the material irradiated with the fluence by the order of magnitude higher, the activation energies of the main traps are found to be 115, 350, 505, 545, and 590 meV. These traps are tentatively attributed to an aggregate of four Si interstitials, as well as to vacancy related centers such as $V_3$ (2-/-), $V_2O$ (-/0), $V_3$ (-/0) and $V_4$ (-/0), respectively.

The effects of heat transport phenomena and deformation gradient through the sheet cross-section on the microstructure, texture and magnetic properties of non-oriented Fe-Si steel were investigated. In order to achieve desired conditions for the steel microstructural and textural parameters improvement, a temper rolling process at elevated temperature was examined in combination with subsequent short term annealing, employing fast heating rate in laboratory conditions. The experimental material was represented by conventional medium silicon, vacuum degassed non-oriented steel that was taken directly from industrial line after final annealing. Performed electron back scattered diffraction measurements revealed that the experimental steel, treated by our proposed thermomechanical treatment, was characterized by coarse-grained microstructure with enhanced intensity of rotating cube texture. The magnetic losses of experimental samples were measured in ac magnetic field with 50 Hz frequency on the toroid with external and internal diameters of 25 mm and 15 mm, respectively. These measurements with magnetic field intensity of 2500 A/m showed that the application of our suggested treatment led to clear power losses reduction of the investigated material from initial 9.9 W/kg to 6.4 W/kg, i.e. by more than 35%.

In order to improve soft magnetic properties of vacuum degassed NO steels, an adjusted temper rolling process for development of particular textures {100}<0vw> was used. The main idea here relies on a deformation-induced grain growth, which promotes preferable formation of the grains with desired orientation. Two vacuum degassed NO steels were chosen as an experimental material. In both cases, a coarse or columnar grained microstructure, with pronounced intensity of cube and Goss texture components, was achieved during a continuous final annealing. The obtained microstructure leads to a significant decrease of coercivity, measured in DC magnetic field. The coercivity of steel with silicon content 2.4 wt.% decreased from 42 A/m to 17 A/m. Even more remarkable improvement of the soft magnetic properties was observed for the steel with Si 0.6 wt.%, where the coercivity value dropped from 68 A/m to 12.7 A/m.

Defect structure of Czochralski grown silicon (Cz-Si) with nitrogen admixture, c_{N} ≤ 5 × $10^{14} cm^{-3}$ (Cz-Si:N), annealed for up to 10 h at 1270-1400 K under hydrostatic Ar pressure ≤ 1.1 GPa, was investigated by synchrotron diffraction topography (HASYLAB, Germany), X-ray reciprocal space mapping, and infrared spectroscopy. Extended defects were not detected in Cz-Si:N processed at up to 1270 K. Such defects were created, however, in Cz-Si:N pre-annealed at 923 K and next processed at 1270 K or in as-grown Cz-Si:N processed at 1400 K. Decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution of 2 at.% Cu in Al was investigated by means of electrical resistivity and high-resolution positron lifetime measurements. The phase composition of this alloy was determined by transmission electron microscopy. Electrical resistivity measurements were performed by a classical four-point method. Positron lifetime spectra were measured by means of a spectrometer consisting of two BaF$\text{}_{2}$ detectors and a standard fast-slow coincidence system. The specimens were first exposed to the solution heat treatment at 783 K for 19 hours with a subsequent quenching. Then the specimens were isochronally annealed in the temperature range 293 ÷ 573 K. Annealing responses of electrical resistivity and positron annihilation were studied. Resistivity measurements as well as transmission electron microscopy observations confirmed the well-known decomposition sequence of the Al-Cu alloy. The decomposition of the alloy was manifested by the decrease in the intensity of positron lifetime component τ$\text{}_{2}$ = (207 ±2 ) ps correlated with simultaneous appearance and increase in the intensity of τ$\text{}_{3}$ = (180 ± 5) ps component. Component τ$\text{}_{2}$ originates from positron annihilation in vacancies trapped at the Guinier-Preston zones while τ$\text{}_{3}$ comes from annihilation of the positrons localized in the misfit dislocations at coherent precipitates of the Al$\text{}_{2}$Cu phase. The shortest observed component τ$\text{}_{1}$ apparently belongs to annihilation of untrapped positrons.

In this paper, the effects of $P_2O_5$ and heat treatment on the crystalline phases and microstructure of lithium disilicate-barium disilicate glass were examined. A wider and broad peak in the differential thermal analysis curve indicates a presence of surface crystallization instead of volume crystallization despite the use of nucleating agent, $P_2O_5$. The heat treatment schedules were planned according to differential thermal analysis data. The controlled crystallization of the compositions studied was carried out using two-stage heat treatment procedure. The glass transition temperature, $T_{g}$ of the as-cast sample were used to determine the optimum nucleation temperature. The optimum nucleation temperature was determined to be 520°C. The crystallization was carried out at 720C and 880C for 15 min. Lithium disilicate and sanbornite was the major phases and moganite or coesite were also present depending on the heat treatment duration. Due to coexistence of lithium disilicate and barium disilicate phases, the change in the melting entropy prevented the formation of spherulitic morphology and recrystallization after further heat treatments. The rise in the crystallization temperature enhanced grain coarsening and formed massive microstructures.

Opis:
In this paper atom probe tomography is used to explore early stage clustering in aluminum alloys. Two novel concepts for a modification of clustering are discussed. Control of early stage clustering is welcome from an application point of view since clustering deteriorates strength evolution during the industrial heat treatment of the important class of Al-Mg-Si precipitation-hardenable alloys. Nanoscale early stage clusters are very difficult to observe and atom probe tomography is the best technique to visualize and chemically measure Si or Mg-containing clusters in aluminum alloys. Restrictions remain in achieving the ultimate quantification of such small solute aggregates by atom probe tomography, such as detection efficiency, local magnification effects, surface migration of solute atoms, and unresolved issues with the reconstruction procedure. Here we investigate one of these restricting effects, namely the migration of solute atoms during atom probe tomography measurements. In particular Si is found to be preferentially localized or absent at certain crystallographic poles in aluminum, which derogates the experimental results gained from atom probe tomography studies of clustering in Si-containing aluminum alloys. This artifact is investigated for different specimen temperatures, detection rates and pulse fractions during atom probe tomography measurements. Optimal strategies to analyze small-scale solute clusters in Si-containing aluminum alloys are presented.

Opis:
In the present work the thermoluminescence of a lilac α-spodumene (LiAlSi$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{6}$), a natural mineral from Brazil, was investigated. Toward this aim the gamma irradiation, as well as several heating processes were carried out. The sample presented a glow curve with various thermoluminescence peaks. Emission spectrum showed only one prominent band at 610 nm, which indicates the existence of only one recombination center despite the several thermoluminescence centers exhibited, due to intrinsic defects. Using correlation between thermoluminescence and optical absorption techniques we discuss the effects of gamma radiation and annealing in the lilac spodumene, and conclude that an annealing at about 230ºC can be applied to natural lilac spodumene gems used in jewelry for increment of its lilac color.

Opis:
Despite the favourable strength and thermal stability, a disadvantage of the Mg-based alloys consists in a low ductility. Recently it has been demonstrated that ultra fine grained metals with grain size around 100 nm can be produced by high pressure torsion. A number of ultra fine grained metals exhibit favourable mechanical properties consisting in a combination of a very high strength and a significant ductility. For this reason, it is highly interesting to examine microstructure and physical properties of ultra fine grained Mg-based light alloys. Following this purpose, microstructure investigations and defect studies of ultra fine grained pure Mg and ultra fine grained Mg-10%Gd alloy prepared by high pressure torsion were performed in the present work using positron annihilation spectroscopy combined with X-ray diffraction, TEM observations, and microhardness measurements. Positrons are trapped at dislocations in Mg and Mg-10%Gd alloy deformed by high pressure torsion. A number of dislocations increases with the radial distance r from the centre to the margin of the sample. No microvoids (small vacancy clusters) were detected. Mg-10%Gd alloy deformed by high pressure torsion exhibits a homogeneous ultra fine grained structure with a grain size around 100 nm and high dislocations density. On the other hand, pure Mg deformed by high pressure torsion exhibits a binomial type of structure which consists of "deformed regions" with ultra fine grained structure and a high dislocation density and dislocation-free "recovered regions" with large grains. It indicates a dynamic recovery of microstructure during high pressure torsion processing.

Opis:
The main goal of the proposed paper is to present the results of the nitrogen ion implantation effects on mechanical and corrosion properties of NiTi shape memory alloy. Local pseudoelasticity phenomena of NiTi were determined using the ultra-low load applied system. The load-penetration depth curves show that lower nitrogen fluence improves mechanical properties in the near surface layer but higher ion fluence leads to degradation of pseudoelasticity properties. Corrosion resistance of NiTi in the Ringer solution was evaluated by means of electrochemical methods. The results of potentiodynamic measurements in the anodic range for implanted NiTi indicate a decrease of passive current density range in comparison with non-treated NiTi, without any signs related to Ni release. The results of impedance measurements recorded at the corrosion potential show a capacitive behaviour for all samples without clear predominance of one of them. It can be explained by the fact that this result concerns the first stage of corrosion exposition. It is shown that nitrogen ion implantation leads to formation of modified surface of improved physicochemical properties.

We study CdTe:Cr single crystals grown by the physical vapor transport method from pre-synthesized (Cd,Cr)Te alloys with 5 at.% of chromium nominal content. Macrodefects in the form of (111)-oriented thin platelets of dopant-related second phases were detected by scanning electron microscopy patterning of the chemically treated surfaces of the crystals. Magnetic properties of the crystals were investigated by ferromagnetic resonance using X-band Bruker spectrometer (9.43 GHz). Their ferromagnetic resonance spectra show several broad lines, which position depends on the orientation of the sample in relation to the external magnetic field in spectrometer. The angular dependences of ferromagnetic resonance spectra are interpreted in the frame of shape anisotropy of ferromagnetic resonance of the planar defects embedded in a weak magnetic CdTe matrix.

This paper presents a comparison of commercially used German and Russian reactor pressure vessel steels from the positron annihilation spectroscopy point of view, having in mind knowledge obtained also from other techniques from the last decades. The second generation of Russian reactor pressure vessel steels seems to be fully comparable with German steels and their quality allows prolongation of NPP operating lifetime over projected 40 years. The embrittlement of CrMoV steels is very low due to the dynamic recovery of radiation-induced defects at reactor operating temperatures. Positron annihilation spectroscopy techniques can be effectively applied for evaluation of microstructural changes caused by extreme external loads by proton implantation, with aim to simulate irradiation and for the evaluation of the effectiveness of post-irradiation thermal treatments. We used our actual and previous results, collected during last 20 years from measurements of different reactor pressure vessel steels in "as received", irradiated and post-irradiation annealed state and compare them with the aim to contribute to general knowledge based on experimental positron annihilation spectroscopy data.

Opis:
In the past decade there has been an explosive growth in the consumption of sapphire driven by the demands of the next generation of energy efficient general lighting based on GaN LEDs. This application requires orienting these rhombohedral corundum crystals such that the substrate surface is the c-plane; a basal plane defined using hexagonal axes. Sapphire crystals form a strong facet on the c-plane, and growth in that direction generally results in crystals with high defect densities, particularly dislocations, and low angle grain boundaries. To overcome this drawback, the usual methodology is to grow the crystal in the a-direction and then core drill rods perpendicularly which are then sliced into c-plane substrates. For all crystal growth techniques commonly employed for sapphire, this approach suffers from poor material utilization. Although this has generally been viewed as an acceptable trade-off in the manufacturing process as long as 2" substrates were the dominant market, as substrate diameters have increased towards 150 mm and larger, this compromise is no longer seen as a viable alternative because of the low material utilization and the high energy consumption of the growth process. This has led to a renewed look at the Czochralski process for more efficient c-axis substrate production.

The dependence of defect detection by cathodoluminescence in a scanning electron microscope on the electron beam current is considered. The examined specimens are AlGaAs/GaAs laser heterostructures with InGaAs quantum well. It is shown that for low electron beam currents, which are typically used, the uniform cathodoluminescence is observed, while for the increasing high electron beam current the oval defects become more and more visible. The influence of electrical properties of the structure on the luminescence detection is explained.

The calculated optical properties of basic point defects - F-type centers and hole polarons - in KNbO$\text{}_{3}$ perovskite crystals are used for the interpretation of available experimental data. The results of quantum chemical calculations for perovskite KNb$\text{}_{x}$Ta$\text{}_{1-x}$O$\text{}_{3}$ solid solutions are presented for x=0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.75, and 1. An analysis of the optimized atomic and electronic structure clearly demonstrates that several nearest Nb atoms substituting for Ta in KTaO$\text{}_{3}$ - unlike Ta impurities in KNbO$\text{}_{3}$ - reveal a self-ordering effect, which probably triggers the ferroelectricity observed in KNb$\text{}_{x}$Ta$\text{}_{1-x}$O$\text{}_{3}$. Lastly, the (110) surface relaxations are calculated for SrTiO$\text{}_{3}$ and BaTiO$\text{}_{3}$ perovskites. The positions of atoms in 16 near-surface layers placed atop a slab of rigid ions are optimized using the classical shell model. Strong surface rumpling and surface-induced dipole moments perpendicular to the surface are predicted for both the O-terminated and Ti-terminated surfaces.

Pure and Ni (2 at.%) doped cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles have been synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method at room temperature. Effect of Ni doping on CdS compound semiconductors has been analyzed using X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Raman and optical absorption studies. X-ray diffraction study confirmed the structure of the obtained nanoparticles to be single-phase zinc blende with the diffractions from (111), (220) and (311) planes. Energy dispersive spectroscopy study confirmed the presence of Ni in the CdS lattice. The average particle size obtained from the transmission electron microscopy studies are in agreement with the crystallite size calculated from X-ray diffraction data. The optical studies exhibited a clear red shift of absorption edge as a function of Ni doping.

Scanning tunneling microscopy, positron annihilation and X-ray diffraction were applied for the study of annealing of submicrocrystalline nickel prepared by equal channel angular pressing. Several processes were revealed in the structure of submicrocrystalline nickel on different scale levels during annealing in the range Δ T=(20÷360)°C. A decrease of grain nonequiaxiality and further structure refinement were observed with a temperature increase in the range Δ T=(20÷180)°C. Subgrain growth with maximum =60 nm at 120°C occurred on the lower scale level within the same temperature range. Grain growth and microstress decrease in submicrocrystalline nickel observed at T>180°C indicate the beginning of recrystallization. The main positron trap centers were identified in submicrocrystalline nickel within different temperature ranges. In as-prepared samples positrons are trapped at dislocation-type defects and vacancy clusters that can include up to 5 vacancies. At the annealing temperature Δ T=(20÷180)°C positrons are trapped at low-angle boundaries enriched by impurities. Within the range Δ T=(180÷360)°C the dominant trap is dislocations.

We report on the effect of interstitial iron defect and doping on iron physical properties and stability of iron telluride by combined experimental and theoretical study. We find that antimony doping and increase iron content in interstitial effect have both the effect to slightly decrease the temperature of the magneto-structural transition $T_\text{trans}$. From stability calculations and absence of change in lattice parameters, it is suggested that insertion of antimony did not occur. Large decrease of $T_\text{trans}$ down to 32 K was observed with Ni doping and our stability calculations confirm that the Ni doping is most favorable in the stability point of view. First-Principles calculations of stability of defect using supercell technique for stoichiometric FeTe indicate that the most stable defect is iron interstitial defect, by far, confirming the proposal done in the literature. Our electronic calculations indicate the appearance of large peaks around the Fermi level in the case of this defect and not just simple doping effect.

In the present work, the creep deformation behaviour of a new cast intermetallic Ti-46Al-8Ta [at.%] alloy is analysed. Constant load tensile creep tests were performed at initial applied stresses ranging from 200 to 400 MPa in the temperature range from 973 to 1073 K. The measured creep deformation curves are analysed and the observed deviations from calculated curves are discussed based on microstructural changes observed in the studied alloy during creep. The kinetics of creep deformation are evaluated in terms of the true activation energy for creep and the stress exponent. Creep damage initiation and propagation leading to the fracture of the creep specimens are characterized as functions of the applied stress and temperature.

Propagation and reflection of plane elastic waves in the acousto-optic crystals tellurium dioxide and calomel as well as in the ferroelectric material barium titanate is examined in the paper. The reflection of the waves from a free and flat boundary separating the crystal and the vacuum is investigated in the (001) planes of $TeO_2$, $Hg_2Cl_2$, and $BaTiO_3$ in the case of glancing acoustic incidence on the boundary. The analysis shows that as much as two elastic waves may be reflected from the crystal surface. Energy flow of one of the reflected waves in paratellurite and calomel propagates in a quasi-back direction with respect to the incident energy flow, so that both energy flows are separated by an angle as narrow as a few degrees. It is found that a relative intensity of the unusually reflected wave in the acousto-optic crystals may be close to a unit in a wide variety of crystal cuts. Possible applications of the examined phenomena in acousto-optic devices are discussed in the presentation.

Cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence measurements are commonly accepted as revealing local properties of a specimen region excited by a beam of electrons or photons. However, in the presence of a strong electric field (e.g. a junction) an electron (or light/laser) beam-induced current is generated, which spreads over the structure. A secondary non-local electroluminescence, generated by this current and detected together with the expected luminescence signal, may strongly distort measurement results. This was confirmed by cathodoluminescence measurements on test structures prepared by focused ion beam on AlGaAs/GaAs/InGaAs laser heterostructures. Methods for minimizing the distortion of measured luminescence signals are presented.

We did a density functional theory spin-polarized calculation based on pseudopotential method on the effect of both vacancy and substitutional impurity in the tungsten tri-oxide lattice. We investigated oxygen and tungsten vacancies and for substitutional dopants we used palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt) and gold (Au) atoms with the formula $A_xW_{1-x}O_3$ and x=0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.5. We obtained electronic band structure, density of states and magnetization of defected and doped WO₃. The results show that in the presence of tungsten vacancy, WO₃ acts as a semiconductor with an indirect band gap while oxygen vacancy induces a metallic behavior for WO₃. Besides, for Pt and Pd the location of trap states lead to photoexcited hole capturing, which can improve photocurrent but for Au dopant, the trap states occur in the middle of the band gap as active recombination centers. Furthermore, both kind of vacancies and Pt dopant can induce magnetization in all values of x, while Pd and Au are less efficient in inducing magnetization.

This lecture will introduce and revise recent experimental developments on correlative laser-assisted atom probe tomography and optical spectroscopy, with a particular attention to the domain of semiconductor nanostructures. The main goal of correlative microscopy is to gain a deeper insight in materials science studies. For the materials scientist, indeed, the possibility of establishing a link between optical spectroscopic properties of a given system and the reconstruction of its 3D structure and composition by atom probe tomography yields an unprecedented insight into the complex influence of the structure on the electronic states and on the optical transitions characterizing the system. This lecture will therefore revise the different approaches by which it is possible to correlate optical spectroscopy experiments - in particular micro-photoluminescence with atom probe tomography and, possibly, with transmission electron microscopy. Dedicated sample preparation protocols and recent case studies will be reported. Finally, a perspective approach will be introduced, in which the same femtosecond laser pulse could be exploited not only for triggering ion evaporation, but also photon emission in situ in the atom probe itself.

Damage buildup and defect transformations at temperatures ranging from 15 K to 300 K in ion bombarded InGaAsP epitaxial layers on InP were studied by in situ Rutherford backscattering/channeling measurements using 1.4 MeV $\text{}^4He$ ions. Ion bombardment was performed using 150 keV N ions and 580 keV As ions to fluences ranging from 5 × $10^{12}$ to 6 × $10^{14}$ at./$cm^2$. Damage distributions were determined using the McChasy Monte Carlo simulation code assuming that they consist of randomly displaced lattice atoms and extended defects producing bending of atomic planes. Steep damage buildup up to amorphisation with increasing ion fluence was observed. Defect production rate increases with the ion mass and decreases with the implantation temperature. Parameters of damage buildup were evaluated in the frame of the multi-step damage accumulation model. Following ion bombardment at 15 K defect transformations upon warming up to 300 K have also been studied. Defect migration beginning above 100 K was revealed leading to a broad defect recovery stage with the activation energy of 0.1 eV for randomly displaced atoms and 0.15 eV for bent channels defects.

The defect build-up, structure recovery and lattice location of transition metals in ion bombarded and thermally annealed ZnO and GaN single crystals were studied by channeled Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and channeled particle-induced X-ray emission measurements using 1.57 MeV ⁴He ions. Ion implantation to a fluence of 1.2×10¹⁶ ions/cm² was performed using 120 keV Co and 120 keV Mn ions. Thermal annealing was performed at 800°C in argon flow. Damage distributions were determined using the Monte Carlo McChasy simulation code. The simulations of channeled Rutherford backscattering spectra reveal that the ion implantation leads to formation of two types of defect structures in ZnO and GaN such as point and extended defects, such as dislocations. The concentrations of both types of defects are at a comparable level in both structures and for both implanted ions. Differences between both implantations appear after thermal annealing where the Mn-doped ZnO reveals much better transition metals substitution and recovery effect.

In this work, we report on the effects of high static magnetic field on the formation of desirable crystallographic orientation of grains ("rotating" cube) during the primary recrystallization of non-oriented steels. Vacuum degassed non-oriented steel with the silicon content about 1 wt% was taken from industrial line after final cold rolling with 80% of deformation and then it was subjected to the laboratory annealing at temperature of primary recrystallization. Whole annealing process was carried with and without the applied external magnetic field of 14 T. The analysis of crystallographic orientation of experimental material was studied by electron backscattered diffraction technique. The microstructural and textural observations have shown a small difference in average grain size between samples annealed with and without magnetic field as well as increase of the "rotating" Cube component and decrease of the intensity of deformation texture by application of magnetic field. The magnetic measurements show that the coercivity value of the sample annealed in the magnetic field of 14 T can be reduced by approximately 3% in comparison with sample annealed under the zero field conditions.

Shot peening was applied to austenitic stainless steel 1.4541 (EN). The surface treatment was performed at various impact energies E, impact densities j and ball diameters D. This resulted in improved microhardness, which increases monotonically with the increase of E, j and 1/D. However, its changes with E and j achieve saturation at about 400 HV0.1. On the contrary, no saturation is observed in the investigated range for 1/D. In the un-shot peened 1.4541 (EN) steel, the lifetime component of low intensity was found with use of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). It corresponds to positron annihilation from delocalized state of positrons in bulk. In the shot peened samples the bulk component is no longer observed. Instead, two types of defects can be identified: vacancy-like defects coupled with edge dislocations and vacancies or their small clusters (consisting 3÷5 vacancies). The results of PALS and hardness testing do not correspond very well, especially in the case of the samples shot peened with balls of varying diameters. The most probable reason for this are different depth profiles of both methods. It seems that the defects, which are responsible for the increase of static microhardness above 400 HV0.1 are located mostly below the surface layer penetrated by positrons.

The present work investigates the influence of laser scribing of grain-oriented silicon steel on the improvement of its soft magnetic properties via magnetic domains modification. The experimental material was represented by conventional Fe-3%Si grain-oriented electrical steel that was taken directly from industrial line after the final box annealing. The laser scribing treatments were applied onto the material surface in order to induce thermal stresses having crucial influence on the magnetic domains refinement. The laser scribing conditions have been optimized by introducing thermal stresses onto the experimental material surface leading to optimal refinement of final domains structures and desired magnetic softness minimization. A semiquantitative relationship has been found between the domain patterns and the used fiber laser treating method. The obtained modified domain structure led to a significant decrease in coercivity measured in DC magnetic field from 20 A/m to 12 A/m.

In the present work, controlling mechanisms of creep deformation of a new cast air-hardenable Ti-46Al-8Ta [at.%] alloy was studied. Long-term constant load tensile creep tests combined with an abrupt change of the applied stress were performed at 700°C. The response of the alloy to a stress reduction is analyzed. Transient behaviour with zero creep before recommencing creep at a reduced load is related to possible creep deformation mechanisms. The dislocation microstructures are analysed for creep strains corresponding to the minimum creep rate by transmission electron microscopy. The controlling mechanisms of creep deformation are identified from the transient creep behaviour of the alloy during stress reduction, the stress exponent and dislocation microstructures observed after creep testing.

The effect of Sm addition on the microstructure and superconducting properties of Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) bulk superconductors has been studied. Nominal composition: 1 mol YBa₂Cu₃O_{7-δ} + 0.25 mol Y₂O₃ + 1 wt% CeO₂ was enriched with different amounts of SmBa₂Cu₃O_y powder with the aim to increase critical current density, J_c, especially in higher magnetic fields by introducing additional pinning centers. Single grain YBCO bulk superconductors with SmBa₂Cu₃O_y (Y123-Sm) addition were prepared by the optimized top seeded melt growth process. Microstructure analysis, performed by polarized light microscope, revealed that SmBa₂Cu₃O_y addition leads to a higher amount of slightly coarser Y₂BaCuO₅ particles, which is related to lower critical current densities (J_c ≈ 6×10⁴ A/cm²) of the YBCO samples with SmBa₂Cu₃O_y addition in low magnetic fields. On the other hand, an enhancement of critical current density, J_c, in higher magnetic fields was observed for Y123-Sm samples. Moreover, a maximum trapped magnetic field, B_{tmax}, of 564 mT at 77 K in Y123-Sm, x=0.0025 sample (Ø 17.2 mm) was 43% higher than that for YBCO sample without any addition.

We report on electronic transport measurements of the magnetic semiconductor Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}As, whereby the defect landscape in various metallic thin films (x=6%) was tuned by He-ion irradiation. Changes in the distribution of activation energies, which strongly determine the low-frequency 1/f-type resistance noise characteristics, were observed after irradiation and can be explained by deep-level traps residing in the As sublattice. Various other kinds of crystalline defects such as, for instance, Mn interstitials, which possibly form nanoscale magnetic clusters with a fluctuating spin orientation, also contribute to the 1/f noise and can give rise to random telegraph signals, which were observed in films with x=7%. In addition, we neither find evidence for a magnetic polaron percolation nor any features in the noise near the Curie temperature.

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was applied to investigate the microcapsules composed of n-eicosane (filling material) and polysiloxane polymer (shell) in the range of temperatures 123-333 K. Pure components of microcapsules were also investigated as a base for interpretation of the measurement results. The temperature of phase transitions in microcapsules was determined. It showed the appearance of a rotary phase, which is not present in pure n-eicosane. In the considered material, two types of free volume have been identified. The sizes of free volumes able to accommodate Ps were estimated using standard models. On the basis of the o-Ps intensities, the content of polysiloxane in microcapsules was estimated as about 40%. Internal structure of the microcapsules (morphology) was observed by scanning electron microscopy.

The thermogravimetric measurements revealed the possibility of increase of oxygen content in studied LCSM samples by additional annealing under oxygen atmosphere and low temperature. Finally, the effect of this annealing on magnetic properties was demonstrated.

The aim of this work was the evaluation of ion-beam induced luminescence for the characterization of luminescent oxide materials containing rare earth elements. The yttrium aluminium garnet epilayers doped with Nd, Pr, Ho, and Tm atoms were used. The ion-beam induced luminescence spectra were excited using 100 keV $H_2^{+}$ ion beam and were recorded in the wavelengths ranging from 300 nm up to 1000 nm. The separate parts of the surface of the same samples were used for ion-beam induced luminescence and cathodoluminescence experiments. Cathodoluminescence spectra have been recorded in the range from 370 nm up to 850 nm at 20 keV e-beam in scanning electron microscope equipped with a grating spectrometer coupled with a photomultiplier. The observed narrow ion-beam induced luminescence lines can be ascribed to the well known radiative transitions in the rare-earth ions in the YAG crystals. The cathodoluminescence spectra reveal essentially the same emission lines as ion-beam induced luminescence. The decrease of the ion-beam induced luminescence lines intensity has been observed under the increasing ion fluences. The ion-beam induced luminescence may be used for characterization of transparent luminescent materials as an alternative method for cathodoluminescence and can be especially useful for observation of ion-beam damage formation in crystals.

Opis:
The γ-γ perturbed angular correlation technique is a very powerful tool for the investigation of dopant incorporation and damage recovery after implantation in semiconductors. The basic principles of the technique will be introduced followed by a discussion of its strengths and limitations. Examples of its application will be given, ranging from cavities in silicon, effects of uniaxial stress on acceptor-donor pairs in silicon to damage recovery in nitride semiconductors like GaN.

The paper shows an influence of doping on lattice constant of a semiconductor. Three effects are discussed: (i) "size" effect caused by a different ionic radii of dopant and host atoms, (ii) lattice expansion by free electrons proportionally to the deformation potential of the conduction-band minimum occupied by this charge, (iii) different thermal expansion of the undoped and doped samples. The experiments have been performed by using the high resolution X-ray diffraction at 77-770 K on AlGaAs:Te and GaAs:Si.

Opis:
Homoepitaxial layers of GaN were grown by metalorganic chemical vapour deposition on single crystals obtained by high-pressure, high-temperature technology. For each metalorganic chemical vapour deposition run, four samples were placed, (00.1) and (00.1̲) faces of the Mg-doped insulating and undoped highly-conductive substrates. The layers were examined using X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and far-infrared reflectivity. It was found that the (00.1̲) easier incorporates donors resulting in higher free-electron concentrations in the layers grown on these sides of the crystals, both, undoped and Mg-doped.

The room temperature Mössbauer spectra of $\text{}^{57}$Fe were measured for the bcc Fe$\text{}_{0.948}$Cr$\text{}_{0.052}$ solid solution quenched into water being at about 295 K from different temperatures not exceeding 1000 K, i.e. from the temperatures for which probabilities of formation of "clear" (Schottky) vacancies as well as vacancies forming the separate interstitial-vacancy (Frenkel) pairs are negligibly low. The obtained data were analysed in terms of concentration of unoccupied places in the 14-site surroundings of an $\text{}^{57}$Fe Mössbauer probe in the sample. It turned out that the concentration of vacancies detected by the probe increases with temperature very rapidly - at the rate of about 10$\text{}^{-4}$ K$\text{}^{-1}$. The result may suggest that the Mössbauer probe is sensitive to a possible thermal distortion of the lattice or creation of very close Frenkel pairs (the interstitial is the nearest neighbour of the vacant lattice site).

Epitaxial $La_{0.67}Ca_{.33}MnO_3$ (LCMO) thin films by off-axis magnetron sputtering were deposited on $SrTiO_3$ (STO) substrates. Complex impedance measurements (module and phase of the thin film impedance) in frequency range 1-30 kHz are done. Substantial dependence of both: module and phase of the complex surface impedance is observed. The temperature interval scanned is from 77 K to room temperature. The impedance has inductive behavior for temperatures less than the Curie temperature and capacitive for higher temperatures. Reduction of the film thickness from 60 to 30 nm shifts the impedance curves to the lower temperatures.

Opis:
In this work, we employed the Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction in a study of point defect formation in intermetallic phases of the B2 structure of the Fe-Al system as a function of Al concentration. The results are compared with the concentrations of point defect determined from positron annihilation data. In the Mössbauer effect, two types of samples are investigated: Fe-Al alloys with few additives obtained by induction melting and Al-rich metallic powders produced by the self-decomposition method and intensive grinding of high energy in the electro-magneto-mechanical mill. We present the values of the $\text{}^{57}Fe$ isomer shift and quadrupole splitting for the components describing the point defect in the local environment of a Mössbauer nuclide. The concentration of the Fe vacancies and Fe atoms substituting Al (Fe-AS) are determined. The results showed that an increase in Al content causes an increase in vacancy and Fe-AS concentration.

Opis:
GaN:Cr and GaN:Fe single crystals as well as GaN:Mn micropowders highly doped by transition metals were grown to investigate low temperature superconductivity. Magnetic measurements revealed type I superconductivity with $T_{C} ≈ 6 K$ and $H_{C} ≈ 600 Oe$, identical for all compounds and also identical to that observed before in GaP:Cr and GaAs:Cr. The presence of amorphous inclusions of gallium may explain existing superconductivity as a result of a phase transition leading to β-Ga during cooling down of the sample. Since the observed parameters are close to those characteristic for superconducting Ga(II) this possibility could not be ruled out.
