Opis:
Cadmium is a dangerous occupational and environmental toxin. It accumulates in the human organism mainly in liver and kidneys. Cadmium half-life is about 10 years, so the symptoms of cadmium intoxication may occur several years after the exposure. Until now in treating intoxication with this metal chelating compounds have been used, burdened with numerous undesirable symptoms. In our investigations anthocyanins from Aronia melanocarpa were used to reduce the harmful results caused by cadmium. Administering anthocyanins with cadmium chloride resulted in a statistically significant decrease of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, concentration of bilirubin and urea in blood serum and decreased cadmium cumulation in liver and kidneys in relation to animals receiving cadmium chloride only.

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to determine the physiological and biochemical changes among bakers, induced by heat exposure at the workplace.Material and MethodsInformation was collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire. Vital signs were measured and recorded by a trained nurse before and after each work shift. A venous blood sample was drawn at the end of each work shift. The mean wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) index in the bakeries and offices was measured.ResultsThis was a cross-sectional study involving 137 bakers working in 20 bakeries, and 107 control subjects comparable in terms of age, race, marital status, years of service, income, and cigarette smoking. There was a significant weight loss and increase in the respiratory rate, the heart rate, and oral body temperature among the bakers compared to the control group. Sodium levels were significantly lower, while blood urea nitrogen levels were significantly higher, among the bakers than in the control group. There were unfavorably hot working conditions in the bakeries: the WBGT index in the bakeries was 37.4°C while the average WBGT for the offices was 25.5°C.ConclusionsThe changes in the physiological and biochemical parameters among the bakers were found to be associated with exposure to high environmental heat in the bakeries, as judged by the WBGT index. Preventive measures should be aimed at reducing the adverse effects of heat exposure among bakers and should be directed towards the man-machine-environment triad.

Opis:
Infections caused by nematodes of the subfamily Cyathostominae affect nearly 100% of pastured horses. Despite of an absence of pronounced symptoms, cyathostominosis can have very serious health consequences. The aim of this study was to monitor changes in total protein levels and concentrations of selected microelements and macroelements in the blood of horses before and after ivermectin treatment. In healthy horses infected by the studied parasites, total blood protein levels were below the physiological norm, but iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) concentrations were within normal limits. Ivermectin treatment reduced the number of excreted parasite eggs (FEC) by 100%, and dead parasites were observed in feces. Decreased iron (Fe) concentrations and an insignificant increase in total blood protein levels were reported. A progressive decline in iron levels was observed when parasite eggs reappeared in feces 60 days after treatment. Iron loss takes place as a result of bleeding from the large intestine when adult nematodes affected by the drug are removed from intestine and fourth-stage larvae leave parasitic nodules in the intestinal wall. A drop in iron levels could be an indirect indicator of the severity of cyathostominosis.

Opis:
Zearalenone (ZEA) is a mycoestrogen frequently found in food and animal feed materials all over the world. Despite its hydrophobic character, ZEA is also found in surface and ground waters which suggests an environmental risk for aquatic animals. Knowledge concerning mycotoxin-related mechanisms of toxicity is still incomplete, e.g. little is known about the influence of ZEA exposure on fish. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ZEA on selected biochemical parameters in juvenile rainbow trout after 24, 72, and 168 h of intraperitoneal exposure (10 mg/kg of body weight). The analysis showed a slight tendency towards prolonged blood clotting time and significant iron deficiency in the liver and ovary of exposed animals. However, no differences in aminotransferase (AlaAT, AspAT) activity or glucose levels in fish plasma was observed. The results of this study suggest that although trout exposed to ZEA did not exhibit any distinct symptoms of liver damage, the mycotoxin tested was able interfere with blood coagulation and iron-storage processes.

Opis:
Introduction. Nicotine is an alkaloid that affects the functioning of the central nervous system and produces dependence. In low doses, it acts as a stimulant and relaxant. Nicotine was reported to have pro-cognitive effects in humans and animals. However, high doses of nicotine are harmful for many organs. The aim of the study was to check whether a 30-day exposure to transdermal nicotine affects memory and biochemical parameters in mice. Materials and method. A total of 32 mice (16 males and 16 females) were used in the experiment. Mice were divided into 4 groups of 8 animals each: I control-females receiving placebo patches for 30 days, II females receiving nicotine patches for 30 days, III control-males receiving placebo patches, IV males receiving nicotine patches. Spontaneous alternation and locomotor activity were examined weekly in a Y-maze. Body mass was recorded daily. On day 30, venous blood samples were obtained and the animals were anaesthetized with CO2. Their blood was used to measure alanine transaminase (ALT), asparagine transaminase (AST), cholesterol, creatinine and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1C). Results. Nicotine significantly improved memory in male mice on day 8. It increased ALT and AST activities in males and females, as well as the concentration of cholesterol in their blood sera. Conclusions. In conclusion, transdermal nicotine may produce transient improvement in fresh spatial memory in male mice, but it is not a long-term effect and therefore nicotine does not seem to be appropriate for use in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. It elevates blood cholesterol level and thus may increase the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events; moreover, it negatively affects liver enzymes. Nicotine use is therefore not recommended.

Selected qualitative and biochemical parameters were determined in cryopreserved semen used for artificial insemination, sampled from 120 bulls reared at the Animal Breeding and Insemination Center in Bydgoszcz. The total average motility of the analyzed sperm samples was determined at 62.51%. The percentage of motile spermatozoa displaying progressive forward motility was 21.65%. Analyzed samples were characterized by a high percentage of sperm cells with a intact plasma membrane (71.21%) and active mitochondria (71.32%). High efficiency of the enzymatic antioxidant system of the evaluated sperm cells was demonstrated by high activity of CAT, GPx and SOD (494.37, 2847.83 and 5.31U/1x109 spermatozoa, respectively) values and low values of the DNA Fragmentation Index (9.32). The results of the study, obtained with the involvement of advanced analytical methods, indicate a high fertilizing capability of the analyzed sperm samples.

The increasing interest in enzymatic growth promoters prompted this investigation of the effect of an enzymatic stimulating complex on selected hematological and serum biochemical parameters in boars. The enzymatic complex [five proteases (proteinases-endopeptidases) and two peptidases (exopeptidases) obtained by fermentation from Streptomyces fradiae] was added to diets for three months, at initial doses of 90 (group El) and 120 (group E2) g/ton feed for the first seven days followed by 40 and 60 g/ton, respectively, in the subsequent weeks. The evaluation was based on selected hematological (RBC, WBC, HCT (Ht), HGB (Hb), MCV, MCH, and MCHC) and biochemical (AST, ALT, AP, Ca, Mg, urea, cholesterol, creatinine, inorganic phosphorus, and oxyglucose) parameters determined before and after the experimental period. The reported values were within physiological norms. Statistical differences were found between experimental groups with respect to WBC, HCT (Ht), MCV, MCH, AP, Ca, Mg, creatinine, and inorganic phosphorus. The study results indicate that the complex of proteolytic enzymes administered to boars caused no negative changes in their metabolic profiles. The statistically different hematological and serum biochemical parameters, while within normal limits, point to an early stage of microcytic anemia and heightened agitation that could be the result of intensified nitrogen metabolism.

Spormann score
Opis:
For many years, there has been a search for a set of biochemical parameters that could facilitate the assessment of severity, prognosis, and administration of early and appropriate treatment in acute pancreatitis. Administration of treatment within the first 48 hours since admission is associated with many problems of distinguishing patients with a mild form of acute pancreatitis (AP) from those with a severe form of acute pancreatitis. Study aim: To assess the relationship between the extent of change in the concentration of 10 selected biochemical indicators: amylase, lipase, total bilirubin, creatinine, uric acid, aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, glucose, magnesium, and iron and histopathological lesions in the pancreas within 2 and 6 hours since induction of AP. The selected time periods correspond to the first and the second day of the disease in people, respectively. Material and methods: The experiments were conducted in 110 male Wistar rats weighing from 250 to 300 g. Experimental animals were divided into three groups: Z – a group in which the ranges of the studied factors and histological structure were established; K – a group of animals operated on which were injected with 0.9% NaCl into the biliary-pancreatic duct; E – a group of animals operated on in which acute pancreatitis was induced by an injection of 5% sodium taurocholate into the biliary-pancreatic duct. Animals from the K and E groups were randomly assigned to one of five subgroups from which the material for biochemical and histological examinations was collected at 2 h and 6 h since the induction of AP. Whole pancreases were dissected for histological examinations, and the samples were dyed with hematoxylin and saturated alcoholic eosin solution. The degree of pancreatic lesions was assessed according to the Spormann score. Quantitative variables were characterized by arithmetic means, standard deviations, medians, minimum and maximum values, and 95% CIs. Results: In histological preparations from rats from the E group, after 2 hours, edematous lesions, neutrophilic infiltrations in the pancreatic parenchyma, together with single petechiae started to appear and were observed. After 6 hours, the lesions became more intense, and minor foci of coagulation necrosis and minor foci of purulent inflammation in the fatty tissue appeared. Within 2 hours, statistically significant differences in the amount of four markers: creatinine, ALT, amylase, and magnesium were observed. After six hours, statistically significant differences in the amount of two markers: AST and glucose were seen. The correlations between histological assessments according to the Spormann scale and biochemical indicators were investigated, and it was observed that within 2 hours the intensity of pancreatitis increased together with an increase in AST. In group K, within 6 hours, the intensity of inflammatory infiltration increased together with an increase in creatinine concentration (correlation coefficient 0.95; p=0.0138). In group E, in the period of 2 hours, lesion intensity in the form of inflammatory infiltration increased together with an increase in the AST level (correlation coefficient 0.90; p=0.0063) and an increase in the iron level (correlation coefficient 0.78; p=0.0399). In the same group and in the same period, an increase in the AST level (correlation coefficient 0.79; p=0.0343) was associated with an increase in lesion intensity in the form of ecchymoses. Inflammatory infiltration increased (correlation coefficient -0.87; p=0.0117) within 6 hours, whereas the creatinine level decreased. Interesting results were obtained with the use of regression analysis – forward stepwise regression. In the period of 2 hours, if the creatinine level increased by 1, the intensity of lesions in acute pancreatitis decreased by 9.02, according to the Spormann score, while the other variables remained at a stable level. However, if ALT level increased by 1, the intensity of lesions in acute pancreatitis increased by 0.02, according to the Spormann score; and if the amylase level increased by 1, the intensity of lesions in acute pancreatitis increased by 0.01, according to the Spormann score, while the other variables remained at a stable level. Conclusions: Histopathological lesions occurred prior to changes in laboratory test results, whereas significant correlations with Spormann scores were seen in the case of changes in AST and creatinine levels. The study results confirm the fact that diagnostics in acute pancreatitis is very difficult and requires monitoring of many laboratory parameters.

This study examined the impact of oral supplementation with a new organic selenium preparation (selenitetriglycerides) on the health of camels (Camelus dromedarius). The experiment was conducted on 7 female camels, which were given 240 mg per animal per day of selenitetriglycerides with an oesophageal probe and subsequently monitored for 28 days. Blood samples for tests were collected 10 times (on day 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 14 and 28) and the following parameters were determined: the level of selenium, vitamin E, the activity of aspartate transaminase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) and the concentration of total protein, glucose, urea and creatinine. The following hematological parameters were determined in whole blood: white blood cell count (WBC), red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin level (HGB), platelet count (PLT) and packed cell volume (PCV). Selenium serum level increased significantly on the second day (from 40.18 µg l-1 to 198.79 µg l-1), peaked on day 7 (514.76 µg l-1) and remained at a statistically significant level relative to the baseline to the end of the experiment. Clinical observations and analysis of the hematological parameters, liver and kidney function parameters did not show any negative effect of selenitetriglycerides on camel health. The results indicate that selenitetriglycerides can be a safe and effective method of selenium supplementation in camels.

The activity of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase, total protein, albumin and cholesterol levels were determined in the blood serum of Japanese quails infected with coccidia and treated with Baycox (active ingredient: toltrazuril). Lower levels of AST and ALT activity were noted in treated birds regardless of the applied Baycox dose. The biochemical changes observed in the blood serum of Japanese quails point to coccidia-induced damage of digestive system tissues despite an absence of pronounced clinical symptoms. Significantly lower levels of AST activity and higher levels of LDH activity in treated birds indicate that coccidiosis treatment with toltrazuril contributed to the regeneration of digestive system tissues. An insignificant increase in cholesterol levels was noted, whereas the other serum biochemical parameters remained within the reference ranges.

Opis:
Before blood constituents data can be applied as a diagnostic tool, general patterns related to sex, season and collection of fish and location need to be well documented and understood. The sex of the fish may also influence the blood parameters. In turn, the values of the different blood biochemical parameters significantly influence the physiological factors and sex of the fish. Hence, there is a need to assess before reporting the biochemical indices of the fish species. The present study was undertaken to know the difference between male and female blood biochemical parameters of the fish, Notopterus notopterus. The blood biochemical measurements included glucose, protein, total cholesterol, HDL and LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine, enzymes-SGPT, SGOT and alkaline phosphatase. Furthermore, the electrolytes - sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorous were compared with regard to sex. Moreover, the effect of sex on quantitative changes in fish blood was studied. The blood parameters between the sexes indicated that male fishes consistently had higher level of all biochemical parameters than did the female fishes, and this study may be a proposal as means of sexing fish. This indicates that the male fish is biochemically and nutritionally richer than the female; in female fish this effect may come about because much of the metabolites and nutrients are continuously being exhausted in the development of gonads (ovary). The results of this study could be used for monitoring the health and the physiological condition of the fish, Notopterus notopterus in a particular aquatic body.

Opis:
Background. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an airway inflammatory disease caused by inhalation of toxic particles, mainly cigarette smoking, and now is accepted as a disease associated with systemic characteristics. Objective. The aim of this work was to investigate and compare selected biochemical parameters in patients with and without COPD. Material and Methods. Observation group consisted of clinically stable patients with COPD (n = 60). The control group was healthy persons from the general population, without COPD, who were divided into two subgroups – smokers (n = 30) and non-smokers (n = 30). Laboratory parameters were investigated by automated clinical chemistry analyzer LISA 200th. Results. Albumin in our measurements showed an average value of 39.55 g.l-1 in the patient population; 38.89 g.l-1 in smokers and in non-smokers group 44.65 g.l-1. The average value of pre-albumin in the group of patients was 0.28 ± 0.28 g.l-1 and 0.30 ± 0.04 g.l-1 in smokers group. The average value of the orosomucoid in patients was about 1.11 ± 0.90 mg.ml-1. In the group of smokers, the mean value of orosomucoid was 0.60 ± 0.13 mg.ml-1. The level of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the patient group reached an average value of 15.31 ± 22.04 mg.l-1, in the group of smokers was 5.18 ± 4.58 mg. l-1. Prognostic inflammatory and nutritional index (PINI) in the group of patients showed a mean value of 4.65 ± 10.77 and 0.026 ± 0.025 in smokers. Conclusions. The results of this work show, that the values of index PINI in COPD patients are significantly higher than in smokers (P <0.001). This along with other monitored parameters indicative inflammation as well as a catabolic process that occurs in the organism of patients with COPD.
Wprowadzenie. Grupę kontrolną stanowili zdrowi pacjenci z populacji generalnej, bez POChP, którzy zostali podzieleni na dwie podgrupy – palaczy papierosów (n = 30) i niepalących (n = 30). Parametry biochemiczne oznaczano z wykorzystaniem automatycznego analizatora LISA 200. Wyniki. Średnie stężenie albumin w grupie chorych wynosiło 39.55 g.l-1 ; w grupie zdrowych palących 38.89 g.l-1 a w grupie zdrowych niepalących 44.65 g.l-1. Średnie stężenie pre-albuminy w poszczególnych grupach pacjentów i zdrowych palących wynosiło odpowiednio 0.28 ± 0.28 g.l-1 oraz 0.30 ± 0.04 g.l-1. Stężenie orosomukoidu w grupie chorych wynosiło 1.11 ± 0.90 mg.ml-1. W grupie palących zdrowych osób średnio 0.60 ± 0.13 mg.ml-1. Stężenie białka Creaktywnego (CRP) w grupie chorych na POChP wynosiło 15.31 ± 22.04 mg.l-1, a w grupie palących 5.18 ± 4.58 mg. l-1. Prognostyczny wskaźnik odżywienia i stanu zapalnego - PINI (Prognostic Inflammatory and Nutritional Index) w grupie pacjentów wynosił średnio 4.65 ± 10.77 a w grupie osób palących 0.026 ± 0.025.

Opis:
The ongoing development of the modern society may also be easily noticed in sports. Currently, to be able to compete at the highest level at major sporting events, it is essential to conduct scientific research to estimate the individual potential and skill level of an athlete. The aim of this study was to assess the anaerobic endurance in men competing in the running events of 400 m/400 m hurdles based on the estimation of maximum power, as well as selected biochemical and physiological parameters measured in a cardiac stress test at a supramaximal intensity. Seven athletes participated in the study and were subjected to a modified version of the Wingate test (Bar-Or, Dotan, Inbar, 1997; Bar-Or, Inbar, Skinder, 1996) which involved performing three runs of a 12‑second endurance test on a cycloergometer at short intervals. This modification of the test allowed a more precise observation and a better understanding of the physiological and biochemical changes that decrease the efficiency as a result of repeated physical effort, which may significantly affect the assessment of the preparation of an athlete, and thus the assessment of the training process. The most significant changes in the course of the conducted study were observed in the values of the following biochemical parameters: glucose levels, acid–base balance of the blood and lactate levels.

Opis:
The objective of this paper was to evaluate the effects of high temperatures on biochemical parameters of hens. Heat stress generally causes a decrease in feed intake. The hypothesis that feed intake, egg production, egg quality measures, acid-base status (pH, pCO2, HCO3 –) of hens would be influenced by the high temperature period was tested. Twenty four Isa Brown hens at 60 weeks of age were used in this experiment and hens were randomly separated into 2 equal groups. Each group contains 12 hens. First control group was housed at 20.1÷21.2°C and 60÷65% relative humidity. Experimental group was housed for 2 weeks at 20.5°C and 60÷65% relative humidity in experimental box, and then exposed to 27°C and 60% for 4 week, and then allowed to recover for 2 week at 20.5°C and 60% relative humidity. All production parameters and egg quality were significantly affected by heat stress. Feed intake during first week heat period was significantly reduced (18%). In three next weeks, feed intake was increasing with reduction 14.5%, 8% and 9.5%, respectively. Blood pH values were significantly lower from 3rd week of exposure. Blood pH had these values: 1st week 7.372, 2nd week 7.371, 3rd week 7.380 and 4th week 7.289.

W badanych produktach oznaczono: liczbę bakterii Acetobacter sp., Gluconobacter sp., LAB i drożdży, pH, ogólną zawartość antocyjanów, ogólną zawartość polifenoli oraz aktywność przeciwutleniającą. Aktywność przeciwdrobnoustrojową napojów kombucha oceniono metodą dyfuzyjną, z zastosowaniem kolumienek, w stosunku do szczepów wzorcowych: Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Listeria monocytogenes serotyp 1/2a (KMSiFŻC), Yersinia entercolitica (PCM 1919), Salmonella enteri- tidis (ATCC 130764), Bacillus cereus (PCM 2019), Enterococcus faecalis (ATTC 29212), Staphylococcus aureus (ATTC 25923), Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ŁOCK 14), Candida albicans (KMSiFŻC).

Opis:
Background. Resistant starch (RS) is part of potato starch that is not digested in the gastrointestinal tract. RS4 is a chemically modified starch (for example by oxidation and esterification) and physically (by heating). Objective. The study was aimed at determining the effect of resistant starch on lipid metabolism and activity of hepatic enzymes in Wistar strain rats fed high-fat diets containing 15% of lard or 15% of soybean oil. Material and methods. Four types of diets were administered to the animals (4 groups of males, n=32): control diet (K1) containing 15% of soybean oil; control diet (K2) containing 15% of lard as well as two groups receiving the same diets with 10% addition of resistant starch RS4 (K1S and K2S). Results. The mean concentration of total cholesterol was lower in the group of animals fed a diet with vegetable oil (39.9 mg/dl) as compared to that reported in the group of rats fed the lard-supplemented diet (55.2 mg/dl). Compared to the control groups in both groups of animals receiving the diet supplemented with resistant starch RS4 the total cholesterol concentration in serum decreased by ca. 25% (differences were statistically significant). In groups of rats receiving oil- or lard-containing diets with the addition of the resistant starch preparation the concentration of triglycerides in serum decreased by ca. 47% and 10%, respectively. Conclusions. A beneficial effect of the resistant starch RS4 added to Wistar rats diets on the lipid metabolism has been shown. The concentrations of total cholesterol and triglycerides in the serum were lower and concentration of HDL-cholesterol was higher in the rats fed with the diets containing the addition of the RS4 preparation as compared to the control groups. Based on the activity of hepatic enzymes the degree of liver damage was lower in groups of rats fed with diets containing resistant starch RS4 as compared to the control groups.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Zwierzęta (4 grupy samców n=32) karmiono 4 rodzajami diet: kontrolną (K1) zawierającą 15% oleju sojowego i kontrolną (K2) zawierającą 15% smalcu oraz odpowiednio 2 grupy takich samych diet z 10% dodatkiem skrobi opornej RS4 (K1S i K2S). Wyniki. W grupach szczurów karmionych paszą z dodatkiem preparatu skrobi opornej RS4 stężenie triglicerydów w surowicy krwi obniżyło się odpowiednio o około 47% i 10%. Wnioski. Wykazano korzystny wpływ skrobi opornej RS4 dodawanej do diet szczurów Wistar na ich gospodarkę lipidową. Stwierdzono zmniejszenie stężenia cholesterolu całkowitego, TGC oraz zwiększenie stężenia cholesterolu HDL w surowicy krwi zwierząt otrzymujących diety z dodatkiem skrobi opornej RS4 w porównaniu do grup kontrolnych. Na podstawie aktywności enzymów wątrobowych stwierdzono niższy stopień uszkodzenia wątroby w grupach szczurów karmionych dietami z dodatkiem skrobi opornej RS4 w porównaniu do grup kontrolnych.

Seed vigour, viability, the contents of soluble carbohydrates, total protein, albumins, and globulins, as well as seed coat structure, were analysed in yellow lupin (Lupinus luteus L.) cv. Iryd seeds stored for 20 years at -14oC, 0oC or at room temperature (approx. +20oC). Seed storage at room temperature reduced viability (to 2%) and increased seed leachate electroconductivity. Determinations of total proteins showed that protein content was significantly reduced in seeds stored at +20oC compared to the other storage regimens. Raffinose family oligosaccharides were the main soluble carbohydrates in seeds stored at 0oC and -14oC, whereas sucrose dominated in seeds stored at room temperature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of seed surface and seed coat sections revealed appearance of an amorphic layer on the surface of seeds stored at room temperature (not observed in other seeds) and distinct shrinking of macrosclereid layer in seeds stored at -14oC. Macrosclereids layer in all seeds was 100 um thick and accounted for 60% of seed coat thickness. The obtained results suggest that for long term storage of lupin seeds at 0oC is the most advisable temperature if both costs of storage and seed storability are considered.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to evaluate physiological changes in hematological and biochemical parameters in mares in perinatal period. Blood samples were collected from 24 pregnant Polish Konik breed mares which were divided into two groups. The first group (Group – I, n=12) comprised mares living in the wild, in the reserve. The second group (Group – II, n=12) consisted of mares kept in stables. The blood was collected 2 weeks prior to the parturition, then 24 hours after the delivery, and then at the 7th and 21st day after foaling. When comparing the two groups before the parturition, no significant differences in terms of WBC, RBC, and Hb were found, however, there was a significant difference in MCV, MCH, LYM, NEU and SEG NEU (p≤0.05). In Group II, 24 hours after the parturition and at the 21st day after foaling, a significant raise in WBC, NEU and SEG NEU (p≤0.05) was detected. No significant differences in serum concentrations of proteins such as TP, Alb or Glb were observed. As to acute phase proteins, significant rise in SAA and Hp (p≤0.05) was found in the two examined groups 24 hours after the parturition. Yet, this rise remained within physiological range. The study revealed a certain degree of fluctuations in hematological parameters, in serum concentrations of acute-phase proteins and total proteins in the mares in the perinatal period. However, these changes remained still within physiological ranges and thus they do not indicate potential susceptibility to disorders of perinatal period.

Opis:
The results of laboratory analyses, including the proximate composition, physicochemical and sensory properties of meat from the studied pigs, point to its high processing suitability and eating quality. Hematological indicators in the blood of the analyzed animal groups were within the reference ranges, excluding MCHC levels which were somewhat elevated. Significant differences were observed in Hb, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC and WBC values, subject to the meat content of the carcass. Biochemical parameters such as glucose concentrations, ALT and AST activity levels varied considerably between groups, and average ALT values somewhat exceeded the norm for the species. These results, including significant variations in selected parameters, can probably be attributed to homeostatic changes in pigs during intensive growth.

Opis:
The aims of this study were to determine the serum levels of pepsinogen, histamine, and prostaglandins F2α and E2 in lactating dairy cows affected with left displacement of the abomasum (LDA). In addition, the hematological and serum biochemical parameters were also determined in cows affected with LDA. A total of 52 adult lactating Holstein-Friesian cows affected with LDA and 30 normal cows (control) were used. In LDA cows, the average age, BCS and body weight were 4.9 ± 1.2 years, 2.5 ± 0.75, and 525 ± 150kg respectively. The average days-in-milk (DIM) in affected cows was 14 ± 6 with a range between 7 to 45 days. There were no significant differences in values of rectal temperature, heart rate and respiration rate between LDA cows and control. Rumen motility was significantly (p≤0.05) decreased in LDA cows. Cows affected with LDA had significantly (p≤0.05) increased glucose levels, and decreased levels of calcium and magnesium. There were significantly (p≤0.05) increased serum levels of pepsinogen and histamine in LDA cows while levels of prostaglandin E2 were significantly decreased in comparison to those in control cows. There were no significant changes in serum levels of prostaglandin F2α. In the hematology analyses, there were no significant changes in cows with LDA when compared to those in control cows. This study provides evidence of a possible role for pepsinogen, histamine and prostaglandin E2 in the etiopathophysiology of LDA in dairy cows.

Opis:
The paper presents investigations of the relationship between the biochemical parameters and vital signs in dairy cows. We analyzed the welfare and functioning of a dairy herd using biochemical parameters and vital signs. Life and biochemical parameters were examined. In the model indicators useful for monitoring the herd are: the age of the cows, the number of cows’ lactating, daily amount of received milk, length of lactation period for cows in the herd, the length of inter-calving period for cows, the number of days to effective insemination, the amount of protein in the feed, the level of β-oxidation in leucocytes, glucose transport through red blood cells and plasma insulin. Based on the results the mathematical model was designed allowing the presentation of a cybernetic model of cow’s organism. There was constructed a multi-equation model which determined the relationships between the selected variables describing the state of dairy cows in the herd and variables that characterize their welfare with its statistical verification.

Neospora caninum is an important cause of abortion in dairy cattle. The general health of affected cows has not been investigated before. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to identify possible relationships between certain metabolic diseases and selected serum biochemical parameters in seropositive dairy cows against N. caninum antibodies in different stages of lactation. The study was carried out using 72 N. caninum seropositive cows and 61 seronegative dairy cows (control). Serum from all cows was tested to determine their N. caninum status (seropositive vs seronegative) using commercially available indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test kit (iELISA). In addition, serum biochemical parameters including beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), glucose, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, total protein, albumin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) were determined using routine laboratory methods. The stage of lactation was obtained at the time of sampling from farm records. Student independent t-test showed that there was a significant difference in the serum concentrations of BHB, AST, ALT, and LDH between seropositive and seronegative cows. There was no significant association between seropositivity and the stage of lactation. However, multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that there was a strong association between seropositivity and BHB concentrations. Results of this study indicate a possible relationship between N. caninum seropositivity and certain metabolic diseases such as ketosis and fatty liver syndrome in dairy cows.

Introduction and aim. Computed tomography severity index (CTSI) and Balthazar score are among the most frequently used scorings in the determination of severe acute pancreatitis. The primary purpose of this study is evaluation of the effects of biochemical parameters, Balthazar score and CTSI on mortality in acute pancreatitis. At the same time, correlations with biochemical parameters, CTSI and Balthazar score were evaluated in patients with AP. Material and methods. In this study, the amylase, lipase, CRP, and procalcitonin values of patients diagnosed with acute pancreatitis were retrospectively recorded. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) images obtained at the time of presentation to the emergency department or within seven days of admission were re-evaluated by two radiologists. The CTSI scores and Balthazar scores of the patients were calculated. Results. The study included 240 patients. The amylase level of the patients was positively correlated with the Balthazar score at a statistically significant level (R=0.189, p=0.003). In addition, the relationship between pancreatic scoring systems and mortality, the AUC value for CTSI was 0.9 (95% CI: 0.826-0.973) and was higher than other scoring systems. Conclusion. CTSI had better performance in the prediction of mortality in patients with acute pancreatitis.

Opis:
Objectives The objective of the study was to reveal morphology, electrolyte and chosen biochemical parameters in terms of health risk in runners in reference to their age and running speed in the case of running a distance of 100 km, which occur after 12 h or 24 h of recovery. Material and Methods Fourteen experienced, male, amateur, ultra-marathon runners, divided into two age and two speed groups took part in the 100-km run. Blood samples for analyses indexes were collected from the ulnar vein just before the run, after 25 km, 50 km, 75 km and 100 km, as well as 12 h and 24 h after termination of the run. Results The sustained ultramarathon run along with the distance covered (p < 0.05) caused an increase in myoglobin (max 90-fold), bilirubin (max 2.8-fold) and total antioxidant status (max 1.15-fold), which also continued during the recovery. Significant changes in the number of white blood cells were observed with each sequential course and could be associated with muscle damage. The electrolyte showed changes towards slight hyperkalemia, but no changes in natrium and calcium concentrations. There were no significant differences between the age and speed groups for all the parameters after completing the 100-km run as well as after 12 h and 24 h of recovery. Conclusions Considering changes in blood morphology and chosen biochemical parameters in ultra-marathon runners during a 100-km run it can be stated that such an exhausting effort may be dangerous for human health due to metabolic changes and large damage to the organs. Negative metabolic changes are independent of age of an ultramarathon runner and occur both in younger (32±5.33 years) and older participants (50.56±9.7 years). It can be concluded that organ damage and negative metabolic changes during a 100-km run occur similarly in participants less experienced as well as in well trained runners. The current methods of preventing calcium deficiency during the periparturient period are based primarily on a diet low in calcium and acidifying the rumen content before parturition, as well as on oral administration of liquid preparations or boluses. The available literature does not provide information on whether these forms of prevention are effective only immediately after the parturition, or whether they also affect an organism throughout the initial lactation period. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of three methods for the prevention of postpartum hypocalcaemia on selected indicators of mineral and energy metabolism, as well as on functional parameters of the parenchymal organs during the two week period following parturition in dairy cows diagnosed with low calcium concentrations before parturition, induced by a lower dietary mineral content. The study was conducted in 60 HF cows, aged 3-6 years old, fed TMR. The animals were divided into three groups: the first group received only a mineral preparation contained in the feed, adjusted to the physiological stage and milk production level; the second group received three additional doses (directly before the parturition, then 24 hours and 48 hours after the delivery) of an oral fluid preparation containing 62.5 g of Ca; while the third group received an intraruminal bolus containing 43 g of pure calcium (immediately after parturition). This research showed that physiological hypocalcaemia occurred at the beginning of lactation in the groups which had received additional calcium preparations (groups II and III), whereas in group I blood collection one week and two weeks after the parturition demonstrated subclinical hypocalcaemia. A statistically significant increase in magnesium and a decrease in phosphorus concentrations were also observed in the latter group, as well as an excessive GGTP activity and high bilirubin concentrations. Using only one complex mineral supplement in high yielding milk cows after parturition does not ensure the expected prophylactic effects, especially in the long term.

The objective of this study was to examine the independent effect of helminths infection on biochemical blood parameters in Beagles intended for laboratory use which may contribute to a change of experimental results. As a result of research, the authors confirmed the negative effect of helminth invasion on the metabolism of the liver and kidney in laboratory dogs. Stool samples from thirty Beagle puppies were examined for parasites before the puppies were moved to the animal facility, and all were dewormed with Vetminth paste on the day they were moved. Stool examination was performed three more times and animals were given Drontal Plus flavor (Bayer) and Baycox 5% (Bayer). A fourth parasitological examination revealed no intestinal parasites in the feces. Three blood biochemical tests were performed. Experimental results clearly indicate the significant impact of intestinal parasites in dogs used in experiments.

The aim of the undertaken research was to establish the subsequent effect of silicon, which is the component in Actisil Hydro Plus preparation, and the place of cultivation on the postharvest quality of Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum multiflorum ‘Variegatum’). Plants were cultivated directly in the field or in an unheated foil tunnel. The preparation was used as a sixfold spray in three concentrations: 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4% during the plants vegetation, at weekly intervals. The control were plants sprayed with distilled water. Leafy shoots were cut at the moment of becoming morphologically mature and placed in distilled water in a controlled thermal-lightning conditions: temperature was 21/18ºC (day/night) and photoperiod of 12 h light/12 h darkness. The condition of cytoplasmic membrane was evaluated with the use of analysis of electrolyte leakage and determining the level of peroxidation of membrane lipids. The analyses of assimilation pigments (chlorophyll a + b) and proline content, the relative water content as well as postharvest longevity were established. Leafy shoots of P. multiflorum cultivated in an unheated tunnel, regardless of the spray with Actisil Hydro Plus, characterized with longer lasting decorative value. The lowest proline content in tissues after 30 days were observed in leaves obtained from plants cultivated in foil tunnel and sprayed with Actisil Hydro Plus in concentration of 0.2 and 0.3%. During the analysis conducted 30 days after starting the experiment, the most effective stop of membrane lipids peroxidation was observed in shoots obtained from plants cultivated in foil tunnel and sprayed with Actisil in concentration of 0.2%. Cultivation of P. multiflorum in foil tunnel and spray with preparation in concentration of 0.3% inhibited assimilation pigments degradation the most effectively.

Preparat zastosowano w formie 6-krotnego oprysku w trzech stężeniach: 0,2; 0,3 i 0,4% w trakcie wegetacji roślin, w odstępach tygodniowych. Kontrolę stanowiły rośliny opryskane wodą destylowaną. Ulistnione pędy ścinano w momencie osiągnięcia dojrzałości morfologicznej, wstawiano do wody destylowanej i umieszczono w kontrolowanych warunkach termiczno-świetlnych: temperatura 21/18ºC (dzień/noc), przy fotoperiodzie 12 h światła/12 h ciemności. Oceniano stan błon cytoplazmatycznych poprzez analizę wypływu elektrolitów i oznaczenie poziomu peroksydacji lipidów błonowych. Podczas analizy wykonanej po 30 dniach trwania eksperymentu stwierdzono najefektywniejsze zatrzymanie peroksydacji lipidów błonowych w wariancie, w którym pędy pozyskano z roślin uprawianych w tunelu foliowym i opryskano Actisilem w stężeniu 0,2%. Natomiast uprawa P. multiflorum w tunelu foliowym i oprysk preparatem w stężeniu 0,3%, najkorzystniej zahamowało degradację barwników asymilacyjnych.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to assess the microbiological (number of heterotrophic bacteria, actinobacteria and moulds) and biochemical (urease and acid phosphatase activity) state of peat with the admixture of composts produced from sewage sludge. An additional aim of the research was to demonstrate the influence of those substrates on the morphological traits of scarlet sage (height, number and length of shoots, number of buds and inflorescences, greenness index (SPAD)). Composts produced from sewage sludge, wheat, maize and lupine straw were mixed with peat, where their percentage varied from 25% to 75%. The substrate which included the composts applied in the experiment had a higher number of heterotrophic bacteria and a higher acid phosphatase activity level than the control substrate (peat). The multiplication of moulds and actinobacteria was more intensive than in the peat only in the combinations with K3 (sewage sludge 50%+sawdust 20%+ lupine straw 30%) and K4 (sewage sludge 50%+sawdust 20%+fresh maize straw 30%) composts, whereas the highest urease activity level was observed in the soils produced from K1 (sewage sludge 50%+sawdust 20%+white straw 30%) compost. The most optimal development of plants was observed in the substrate with compost produced from wheat straw. Composts produced from municipal sewage sludge were found to be suitable for growing scarlet sage. However, their effect depends on the percentage of high peat in the substrate.
Celem badań była ocena stanu mikrobiologicznego (liczba bakterii heterotrofi cznych, promieniowców, pleśni) i biochemicznego (aktywność ureazy i fosfatazy kwaśnej) torfu z domieszką kompostów wytworzonych na bazie osadu ściekowego. Ponadto celem badań było wykazanie wpływu niniejszych podłoży na cechy morfologiczne szałwii błyszczącej (wysokość, liczba i długości pędów, liczba pąków i kwiatostanów, indeks zazielenienia (SPAD)). Komposty wyprodukowane z osadu ściekowego, słomy pszennej, kukurydzianej i łubinowej zmieszano z torfem w różnym udziale procentowym, od 25% do 75%. Podłoża zawierające w swoim składzie komposty charakteryzowały się wyższą niż podłoże kontrolne (torf) liczbą bakterii heterotroficznych oraz wyższą aktywnością fosfatazy kwaśnej. Silniejsze namnażanie grzybów pleśniowych oraz promieniowców w stosunku do kombinacji kontrolnej odnotowano jedynie w przypadku w kombinacji K3 (50% osadu ściekowego + 20% trociny + 30% słomy łubinowej) i K4 (50% osadu ściekowego + 20% trociny + 30% świeżej słomy kukurydzianej).

Supersorbent polymer application may be a way to partial reduction of water deficit, especially in sandy soils. It causes an increase in water retention, at the same time improving soil structure. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of AgroHydroGel on the activity of soil enzymes (dehydrogenases and phosphatases), as well as on selected biochemical parameters in seedlings of winter wheat cv. Skagen (activity of catalase and peroxidase and content of total polyphenols and assimilation pigments). The pot experiment was carried out on soil material taken from the topsoil of Brunic Arenosol in Agricultural Experimental Station in Lipnik, located in the West Pomeranian District, Poland. According to the classification of the United States Department of Agriculture, it was soil with a granulometric composition of loamy sand, with Corg content of 8.7 g·kg⁻¹. AgroHydroGel was added to the soil samples in amounts appropriate to doses for soils of a very high permeability (1.19 g·kg⁻¹), high permeability (1.59 g·kg⁻¹) and medium permeability (1.99 g·kg⁻¹). A monocotyledonous plant, winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Skagen, was used in the experiment. Seeds of the plant, originating from the same source, were sown into a plastic plant pots that were filled with reference soil and soil thoroughly mixed with the studied supersorbent. Soil samples were collected on days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28, and activities of acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2), alkaline phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.1) and dehydrogenases (EC 1.1.1.x) were determined. Moreover, in winter wheat seedlings, analyses of catalase (EC 1.11.1.6), peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) activity and content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids) were performed on days 14, 21 and 28. Obtained results showed significant changes in measured biochemical parameters in soil and the seedlings of winter wheat. Among soil enzymes the highest changes were observed in dehydrogenases activity. However, in the seedlings of winter wheat, a stimulation of catalase activity, inhibition of peroxidase activity and increase in assimilation pigments concentration were mainly reported. These results showed that application of AgroHydroGel may cause disturbances in soil ecochemical state and initiate oxidative stress in wheat seedlings.

Opis:
An influence of various humic-plant feed additives based on some herbs (nettle, chamomile, yarrow, perforatum), lucerne and humic materials on biochemical indices of Lohmann Brown (LB) layers blood plasma was estimated. Hens were housed in deep litter system, 20 birds in a group. Four groups were formed: control (C - standard feeding), and experimental, supplemented with preparations: E-1 herbal-humic, E-2 humic-herbal and E-3 - humic-lucerne. Hens were placed in the pens on the 16th week of life, addition of preparations with standard food mixture started at the 22nd wk and lasted until 66th wk of life. Blood for analyses was collected four times in the following periods: 27, 37, 54 and 65th wk of life. The applied humic-plant preparations to a limited degree affected the values of examined biochemical parameters in serum: total protein (TP), albumins (Albs), glucose (Glu), urea, triacylglycerols (TAG), total cholesterol (TCh), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminot-ransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). It is difficult to determine based on these study, which preparation is one the most active biologically, however is seems that humic-lucerne preparation affected the examined blood parameters to the highest degree. The reference values ranges in hens blood serum LB hens were proposed for: TP (43-65 g/l), Albs (15-22 g/l), urea (0.5-1.2 mmol/l), Glu 10-15 mmol/l), TCh (2.2-4.5 mmol/l), TAG (10-24 mmol/l), AST (4-12 U/l), ALT (150-280 mmol/l) and ALP (190-350 U/l).

Opis:
Background. Arsenic is widely distributed in the environment. The main routes of absorption of inorganic arsenic compounds are the lungs and the gastrointestinal tract. Arsenates both (III) and (V) are absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract in 55-95%, while the organic arsenic compounds in 75-85%. Arsenic poisoning leads to damage the activities and morphological changes in the stomach and intestines, causing the occurrence of nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Arsenic compounds may also be the cause of the development of certain cancers (lung, skin and liver). The first changes caused by arsenic poisoning usually remain unnoticed. Arsenic affects haematological and both lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. It also causes changes in the organs involved in metabolism, so biochemical parameters or enzymes activity are therefore a good indicator of poisoning changes. Objective. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of protein and fat content in diet on selected biochemical blood parameters in rats. Materials and Methods. Rats (11 groups n = 88) were fed with 5 types of diet: control, low-protein, high-protein, low- fat and high-fat. Animals received water without arsenic (control group) or water with 10 or 20 μg As/mL. Results. In animals fed a low protein diets, regardless of the dose of arsenic, it was a decreasing of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose in serum observed, compared to the control group. In the groups fed with low-protein diet revealed a significantly less damage in the liver as compared to the control group. In animals fed high-protein diets and with varying addition of arsenic a significant higher concentration of various biochemical parameters were found, in comparison to the respective control groups. In animals fed the high protein diet and poisoned with 20 μg As/mL of the arsenic significantly higher liver damage were found, compared to control group. Conclusions. Symptoms of arsenic hepatotoxicity measured with enzyme activity were highest in the groups of animals fed with low-protein diet. The parameters of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism depended mostly on diet than the dose of arsenic.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Szczury (11 grup samców n=88) karmiono 5 rodzajami diet: kontrolną, nisko- i wysokobiałkową oraz nisko- i wysokotłuszczową, oraz zatruwano arsenem w ilości 10 i 20 μg/ml. Wyniki. U szczurów karmionych dietami niskobiałkowymi, niezależnie od dawki arsenu, stwierdzono tendencję do obniżania się stężenia cholesterolu ogółem, triglicerydów i glukozy w surowicy krwi w porównaniu do grupy kontrolnej. W grupach oxazwierząt, które spożywały dietę niskobiałkową wykazano istotnie statystycznie mniejsze uszkodzenie wątroby w porównaniu do grup kontrolnych. U zwierząt karmionych dietami wysokobiałkowymi oraz z różnym dodatkiem arsenu stwierdzono istotne statystycznie wyższe stężenie poszczególnych parametrów biochemicznych w porównaniu do odpowiednich grup kontrolnych. U zwierząt karmionych dietą wysokobiałkową zatruwanych arsenem w ilości 20 μg/ml wykazano istotnie większe uszkodzenie wątroby w porównaniu z grupą kontrolną. Wnioski. Objawy hepatotoksyczności arsenu mierzone aktywnością enzymów były największe w grupie zwierząt karmionych dietą niskobiałkową. Na parametry gospodarki lipidowej i węglowodanowej większy wpływ miała zastosowana dieta niż dawka arsenu.

Opis:
W 6, 13 i 20 dniu życia podczas wieczornego karmienia oraz w 7, 14 i 21 dniu życia podczas porannego karmienia do preparatu mlekozastępczego dodawano jednowodną laktozę w ilości 1g . kg-1 masy ciała.
The current study presents an analysis of selected hematological and biochemical parameters of the blood plasma of calves during the first month of life, before and after administration of a milk replacer with additional quantity of lactose. The experiment was performed on 8 male Polish-Friesan calves var. Black-and-White. Blood samples were collected before the morning feeding from 6th to 8th, from 13th to 15th and from 20th to 22nd day of life. In the evening on the 6th, 13th and 20th day of the experiment and in the morning on the 7th, 14th and 21st day of the experiment, monohydrate lactose in an amount of 1g per 1 kg of body weight was added into the milk replacer. In all calves in three age groups, two-time administration of milk replacer with the addition of lactose, most likely caused rapid passage of intestinal content and additional water loss in feces, which manifested in frequent and loose stools of distinctive dark green color. Although digestive disorders were observed in the calves studied, no changes were detected in the concentrations of total protein (TP), albumin (Alb), glucose, sodium (Na), potassium (K) chloride (Cl), copper (Cu), inorganic phosphorous (iP) magnesium (Mg) as well as haematocrit (Ht) and mean corpuscular volume of erythrocytes (MCV). Calves in the first week of life, after the supply of additional portion of lactose, had significantly reduced concentration of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn).

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine whether exposure to low doses of DON leads to changes in serum hematological and biochemical profiles. In the experiment, pre-pubertal gilts (with body weight of up to 25 kg) were administered DON per os at a daily dose of 12 |ig/kg BW (group E, n=18) or a placebo (group C, n=21) over a period of 42 days. Blood for analysis was sampled seven times at weekly intervals. Minor, but statistically significant changes were observed in selected indicators, particularly in weeks 2 and 3 in values of biochemical parameters such AlAT, AspAT, Pin and Fe, and in values of hematological parameters such as RBC, MCV, MCHC, PLT, MPV, WBC, neutrophil, eosinophil, lymphocyte and monocyte counts. In group E, a decreasing trend of the values was observed in most cases, except for RBC, PLT, eosinophil, lymphocyte and monocyte counts. Similar results were obtained in the last two weeks of the experiment. Initially, exposure to DON has a stimulating effect, which is eliminated when adaptive mechanisms are triggered. The results of the study indicate that the intensity of biotransformation processes varies subjected to the body's energy resources.

Zearalenone (ZEN) widely contaminates animal feed of plant origin. The recommended safe concentrations of ZEN in feeds for various animal species are set mainly based on the mycotoxin’s hormonal properties (NOEL). Our growing knowledge about biologically active concentrations of ZEN, molecular mechanisms and cells/tissues targeted by ZEN indicates that the harmful effects exerted by this mycotoxin on animals may be far greater than previously believed. This experiment was performed on pre-pubertal gilts divided into a control group (n=9) and an experimental group (ZEN, n=9). The control group received placebo, whereas the experimental group was administered ZEN at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg feed (equivalent to 5 μg/kg BW/day) for 42 days. On days 14, 28 and 42 blood samples were collected from the animals to determine the concentrations of selected zearalenols, serum biochemical and haematological parameters. Conjugated ZEN was found in the blood serum of the experimental gilts. Changes in the analysed biochemical parameters included a transient increase in albumin and cholesterol levels. A statistically significant increase in the concentrations of neutrophilic and acidophilic granulocytes was observed in the white blood cell system. The results indicate that long-term per os exposure of pre-pubertal gilts to low doses of ZEN (below NOEL) has a modulatory effect on liver function and white blood cells.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) has become one of the most economically important diseases for the swine industry worldwide. The objective of the study was to determine selected blood antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase (GPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD)), biochemical and haematological parameters in PRRS positive and negative pigs of three different categories, mainly to test oxidative stress hypothesis in pigs naturally infected with PRRS virus. Ninety PRRS positive and 90 PRRS negative pigs were included in the study. The presence of PRRS was confirmed by serological detection of antibodies against PRRS virus (PRRSV) and detection of PRRS viral RNA by RT-PCR. Pigs were further divided into three groups of 30: piglets just before weaning (weaners), fatteners and finishers. Blood samples for determining selected blood parameters were collected from the vena cava cranialis. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher activities of SOD in weaners and fatteners and of GPX in weaners were determined in PRRS positive pigs than in corresponding groups of PRRS negative pigs. In contrast, significantly (P < 0.05) lower GPX activity was observed in finishers of PRRS positive pigs than in the corresponding group of PRRS negative pigs. Concentrations of serum total protein in PRRS positive weaners and fatteners were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those found in PRRS negative pigs. Leukopenia was observed in all three groups of PRRS positive pigs. It has been demonstrated, for the first time, that oxidative stress might be increased in PRRSV naturally infected pigs, especially in weaners.

In gilts, the period of early pregnancy occurring from the time of fertilization to the beginning of implantation is sensitive to any environmental disruptions, including an unbalanced diet of a future mother. Previously, we found that due to the undernutrition in gilts during this period, the endocrine intrauterine microenvironment and DNA methylation in the uterus have been changed. These distortions may diminish the success of pregnancy. In this study we focused on the influence of a restricted diet used in gilts during the first days of pregnancy on their biochemical and haematological parameters in peripheral blood. The applied restrictive diet vs. normal diet covered only 70% of the nutritional demands of early pregnant gilts. Normal (n = 4 gilts) or restrictive (n = 5 gilts) diets were used from the day of the first signs of the estrus until day 9 of pregnancy and biochemical and haematological parameters in blood plasma were determined during peri-implantation period, e.g. on days 15 to16 of pregnancy. In restrictive vs. normal fed gilts significantly lower plasma phosphorus, calcium and total cholesterol as well as the tendency to increasing concentrations of triglicerydes and asparate aminotranserase were found. Haematological parameters did not differ between the studied gilts. Thus, it seems that the availability of nutritional factors became suboptimal in restrictively fed early pregnant gilts. Even short-lasting undernutrition of females during the peri-conceptional period may cause a disruption of biochemical homeostasis during the peri-implantation period and probably affect the success of pregnancy.

Background. Pharmacological correction of a high-fat diet is of great interest to prevent the development of obesity and hypertension. More and more research is being done on the preventive use of medicinal herbs for excess caloric intake. Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the general physiological effect of I. helenium rhizomes and M. chamomilla inflorescences used in the diet of male rats consuming excess amounts of fat and calories in the daily diet. Material and methods. In a 30-day experiment, we determined the effect of I. helenium rhizome and M. chamomilla on the physiological activity and metabolic processes of laboratory rats consuming a high-fat diet. The physical activity was evaluated according to the mass gain of animals and change in the relative mass of the internal organs, and also the functional conditions of the central nervous system. The influence on the metabolic processes was revealed by biochemical and clinical blood analyses. Results. In a laboratory experiment on male rats, it was found that the addition of dry crushed rhizomes of Inula helenium L. and inflorescences of Matricaria chamomilla L. to the diet caused opposite changes in body weight. In the control group, the animals slightly increased their body weight (up to 111.5% of the initial weight by the end of the experiment); the rhizomes of I. helenium caused a decrease in body weight gain (up to 105.5% on the 30th day of the experiment compared to the initial weight); rats fed M. chamomilla inflorescences gained 123.2% of their initial body weight during the month of the experiment. The rhizomes of I. helenium caused an increase in the stomach relative mass. A decrease in the thymus relative weight was observed when animals were fed M. chamomilla inflorescences. The rhizomes of I. helenium stimulated an increase of blood protein concentration (mainly due to globulins), an increase in the alkaline phosphatase activity and cholesterol, and a decrease in the triglycerides concentration. M. chamomilla inflorescences reduced the blood urea concentration and increased the activity of alkaline phosphatase, causing strong changes in fat metabolism. Under the influence of the diet with the addition of M. chamomilla inflorescences, the atherogenic index increased in animals by 6.5 times relatively to the control group (due to a decrease in the concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and an increase in the concentration of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, an increase in the total cholesterol concentration). When M. chamomilla was added to the diet, the blood triglycerides concentration in animals decreased sharply and the concentration of leukocytes increased. The concentration of monocytes exceeded the limits of the physiological norm both in the control group and in the group of animals fed on M. chamomilla inflorescences. Conclusions. The results of the studies show the promise for further research of I. helenium rhizomes in the prevention of hypertension and also indicate strong risks when using M. chamomilla inflorescences for preventive purposes during high-fat and hypercaloric diet.

Introduction. The current state-of the art points to a positive impact of copper (Cu) supplements on the general health status in poultry. Copper induces beneficial changes in the haematological and biochemical blood parameters. It also displays immunostimulating properties and helps maintain a proper microbiological balance in the digestive tract. Objective. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of Cu at the dose of 50 mg/kg BW, administered in organic and inorganic form, on the haematological and biochemical blood parameters and level of Cu bioaccumulation in the liver and pectoral muscle. Materials and method. The study was carried out on 45 BUT-9 turkeys which had been were reared for 16 weeks. They were divided into 3 experimental groups: I – the control group; II – fed with CuSO4 at the dose of 50 mg Cu·dm-3 H2O; III – received a Cu chelate with lysine at the same dose. Results. The administration of Cu at the dose exceeding the nutritional recommendations did not induce beneficial changes in the examined birds. This indicates that it is not necessary to administer Cu doses higher than the recommended levels. The extent of Cu accumulation in the pectoral muscle increased by 40% compared to the control group, whereas in the liver it was higher by 30–35% than in the birds without Cu administration. The level of Cu in tissues does not pose a risk to consumers. Conclusions. The supplementation of Cu at the dose of 50 mg has a negative impact on the level of the analyzed parameters. The results of the presented study indicate that the administered Cu dose exceeds birds’ demand for this element.

The aim of the studies was to state whether the replacement of 10% DM of basic rate of roughages by wheat DDGS affected favourably the yield and chemical composition of milk from cows in the first stage of lactation. The experiment was carried out on 50 cows of Polish HF breed, with the average milk production in herd during lactation preceeding the experiment on the level of 8200 kg. The cows were classified in two groups, 25 animals in each group. Both groups of cows were fed the same basic rate of roughages which consisted of maize silage, grass silage, silage produced from sugar beet pulp, ensiled grain of maize and wheat and straw additive. In the experimental group, 10% of DM of basic rate was replaced by the same quantity of wheat DDGS. In the both groups the same concentrate, consisting of wheat meal, soy meal, linen cake and protein concentrate, was also employed. In the both groups, concentrate constituted 50% of DM of the rate. Before commencement of the experiment, after 30 and then, after 90 days, the yield of the cows was examined, milk samples were collected and milk composition, casein fractions, SCC, total bacterial count and the selected physiochemical and technological parameters of milk were determined. After 30 and 90 days of the experiment, blood samples were collected from the examined cows and the selected biochemical parameters: glucose, total protein, albumins and urea were determined. Any statistically significant differences in any of the examined parameters were not found after one month of the experiment as well as after 3 months of the study.

Opis:
Rowing is a sport discipline, which requires extreme physical strength and endurance and appropriate aerobic and anaerobic capacity as well. However, when the workout intensity and load is very high, exercise is associated with temporary changes in cellular metabolism and the immune system. The study included one male rower aged 28 years - the highly-skilled and experienced athlete. We determined basic cardiorespiratory fitness measures, complete blood count, and 24 clinical chemistry parameters including relevant biochemical and haematological parameters and matrix metaloproteinases activities. Maximal exercise on the rowing ergometer induced 2-fold increase in absolute counts of all leukocytes subsets. There was observed an increase in C-reactive protein concentrations as well. MMP-9 activity increased 1,3-fold compared to the baseline value. Exhaustive exercise caused significant changes in creatinine and urea serum levels, but the most prominent changes were found in total and direct bilirubin concentrations. Maximal exercise induced also a decrease in the iron and magnesium levels. No changes in ALT, GGT and ALP activity were observed, while increase in CK, AST and LDH activity in post-exercise time and the decrease during the recovery was found. Therefore acute specialized movement on the rowing ergometer is not the cause of muscular damage, but rather indicate efficient adaptation to the physical exercise. Moreover, it seems that maximal exercise induces an inflammatory response characterized by greater count of all subpopulations of leukocytes, elevated levels of CRP and MMP-9 serum activity.

Opis:
The experiment was conducted on 30 periparturient Polish Holstein-Friesian Black-and-White cows. Animals were kept in a loose-housing system and received TMR (total mixed ration) whose qualitative and quantitative composition varied with the stage of lactation and milk yield. Blood for biochemical analyses was collected by a veterinarian three times: 1-3 weeks prepartum (I), 1-3 weeks postpartum (II), and 4-8 weeks postpartum. Blood samples were analysed for energy metabolism (glucose concentration), protein metabolism (total protein and albumins), liver status (aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase) lipid metabolism (cholesterol and triglycerides), and minerals (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus). The parameters were stable and generally within the physiologically normal range, except protein which in lactations 2-3 and 4 slightly exceeded the reference value at the third blood sampling. The reference values were also exceeded for albumins in lactations 1, 2-3 and 4 at the third blood sampling. Differences (p ≤ 0.01) were observed only in the cholesterol content at the peak of lactation between the first and fourth lactation. The cows yielding more than 9,700 kg milk were characterized by higher blood glucose levels, but lower protein levels compared to the cows producing less than 9,700 kg milk. At the peak of lactation, the protein level exceeded normal values regardless of the milk production level. In our study, peak lactation cows with lower milk yield showed a higher level of AST, which exceeded normal values. In our study, the lipid indicators (cholesterol and triglycerides) were within the physiologically normal range. The highest cholesterol level was observed during the dry period in the blood of lower yielding cows. All blood parameters were stable and fell within the physiologically normal range except for protein, which slightly exceeded the reference value at the third sampling.

Opis:
Rivers are considered the most important sources of surface water on Earth. They are play a significant role in all human activities and the quality of river water is needed. Therefore, the importance of the water quality index is arising through providing data base about quality of the water source, and explain the change in the water quality over a period of time continually. This study involved determination of physicochemical and biological parameters of Lower Zab river in Kirkuk city at two different points. The objectives of the study are to assess the present water quality, through analysis of some selected water quality parameters like pH, TDS, BOD, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, EC, alkalinity, and salinity etc. and to compare the results with the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment and National Sanitation Foundation Water Quality Indices. Raw water samples were collected from the Lower Zab river twice a month by one sample every 15 days from each station. The water quality data include 16 different parameters. Tests were carried out following the American Public Health Association standard methods. The results show that all parameters values were within the standards of drinking water proposed by the CCME standards and Iraqi standards or the World Health Organization standards for drinking purpose, except turbidity, DO, nitrate, calcium, which were mostly higher than the standards and sometimes BOD and potassium. The results of WQI showed that the water quality at LZ3 station is lower than LZ2 station due to the polluting activity of the Lower Zab river. Furthermore, for the years 2014, 2015, and 2016, the water quality was degraded due to the ISIS war. Also, it was noted in the 2013 year that the water quality degraded more in fall and winter seasons due to that the earth has exposed to the long-dried season and then suddenly exposed to a high rainfall season which in turns leads to increase some parameters very high (i.e. turbidity). Finally, the Lower Zab river water cannot be use for drinking directly. However, a pretreatment is needed before the drinking use.
