Opis:
Belief is a mental state, its content being the statement of a certain state of affairs. With respect to the manner they arise, we divide beliefs into spontaneous and reflexive. When we take into consideration their bases, we speak about basic beliefs and beliefs derived from others. The terms “spontaneous belief” and “basic belief” have various meanings, but they are equivalent with regard to their range.  Contemporary religious spontaneous and basic beliefs have various forms. In the Christian religion we speak, among other things, about numinous beliefs, as described by R. Otto, and A. Plantinga’s properly basic beliefs. According to Otto, numinous experiences (of that which is tremendum et fascinans) are a source of firm beliefs for man, i.e. he has had contacts with some objective manifestations of divinity. Plantinga (whose thinking belongs to a more “naturalistic” strain) writes about properly basic beliefs, such that arise spontaneously in man (if he is not depraved by sinful life) who remains under respective circumstances. Such beliefs are the grounds for theistic derivative beliefs. The arguments for the truthfulness of the beliefs of the first and second type bring forth a series of questions, and they are constantly discussed by philosophers of religion.

Opis:
The present analyses focused on the adaptation of the Personality Beliefs Questionnaire (PBQ) – a tool measuring beliefs specific to personality disorders. Two Polish versions of the PBQ were developed: a translation of the original version consisting of 126 items, and a modified version comprised of 124 items (the scale for borderline personality was made diagnostically independent; the scale for schizotypal personality was added, and the items were assigned to the scales not only on the basis of their content but also on the basis of factor analysis results). For both versions, indicators of measurement reliability and validity were obtained based on results from more than 1,600 subjects. The data showed that the scales of both versions demonstrated acceptable reliability in terms of both internal consistency and temporal stability. The values of convergent validity of the scales in both versions were comparable (correlations with scales of the SCID-II questionnaire for Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II and TALEIA-400A: Test for AxiaL Evaluation and Interview for Clinical, Personnel, and Guidance Applications, assessing personality disorders), but scales of the modified PBQ version showed better discriminant validity (its internal structure also was very clearly confirmed by the results of confirmatory factor analysis). Insufficiently high convergent validity was found for both PBQ versions, including high intercorrelations among scales. Therefore, the discussion emphasized that although the PBQ allows for the identification of specific beliefs in personality disorders, it is not a diagnostic equivalent for tools assessing disorders per se.

This article presents the findings of an innovative qualitative study involving one CLIL (content and language integrated learning) student and one student in a parallel, non-CLIL strand at high school level in Sweden. The aim of the study was to investigate differences in students’ beliefs about language. The success of second (L2) and foreign language (FL) learning depends to a large degree on individual differences (Dörnyei, 2005; Skehan, 1991). Differences are normally elicited through questionnaires, interviews, and/or observations. In the present study, the aim was to get direct access to the informants’ own perspectives, without the content being too directed through predetermined questions. In this study, students were asked to take photos illustrating how they view (a) their L1 (Swedish), and (b) the FL/L2 English. Then the photos were thematically organized by the researcher. Subsequently, the thematic organization and the photos themselves were discussed with each of the informants during an inter iew. The informants were asked to elaborate on each theme and/or picture as to why and how it illustrates the respective language for them. The findings reveal substantial differences between the two informants in their views on their L1 and FL/L2, with the CLIL student highlighting communication rather than seeing the two languages as separate systems, and the non-CLIL student seeing language rather the other way around.

The study’s main aim is to look for relationships between political beliefs and political subjectivity of grey voters (over 65). Political beliefs contain a motivational element, mainly due to being embedded in the values and needs of the respective individuals. This can affect the consciously created place of the citizen within the political system in different directions. The orientation of the study on the grey voters may be cognitively engaging due to the several sources related to historical events that took place in Poland. Political beliefs were conceptualized through dimensions on a left-right scale, where xenophobia and religious fundamentalism were diagnosed in the area of cultural beliefs. In contrast, acceptance of capitalism and anti-welfare were diagnosed in the area of economic beliefs. Political subjectivity was diagnosed using an original tool, whose preliminary analysis made it possible to distinguish three factors of the construct: political initiative, political sense, and identification with the political system.

D. Wulff (1991) developed a notion of post–critical beliefs as a proposal for the description of religion in the light of the progress of secularization and socio–cultural changes. According to his theory, we can situate(place) potential attitudes toward religion in a two–dimensional space. The vertical dimension stands for Inclusion vs. Exclusion of Transcendence, and the horizontal one—for the way an individual interprets religious content: Literal vs. Symbolic. In this way, the two dimensions determine four quadrants, each reflecting a potential attitude towards religion, operationalized by D. Hutsebaut (1996) in the Post–Critical Belief Scale (PCBS) as: Orthodoxy, External Critique, Relativism and Second Naiveté. The research presented in this paper is our attempt at fi n ding an answer to the question whether the religious attitudes determined by Wulff are related to self–consciousness types. We tested 159 adult individuals by means of the PCBS scale by D. Hutsebaut and the Self–consciousness scale (O–Z scale) by Z. Zaborowski and Z. Oleszkiewicz. The results of these tests are that the refl ective type of self–consciousness correlated positively with Orthodoxy and Second Naiveté and negatively with External Critique and Relativism.

The presented study examined the relationship between teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and their experience of burnout. Its participants were 230 schoolteachers from fourteen Slovenian primary schools. The Questionnaire of Teacher Pedagogical Beliefs and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey were applied. The findings suggest pedagogical beliefs as predictors of teacher burnout dimensions. Teachers’ negative pedagogical beliefs about students’ behavior and discipline maintenance are related to a greater experience of emotional exhaustion whilst negative beliefs about teachers’ trust in students and the role and responsibility of the teacher are related to a greater experience of depersonalization and decreases in personal accomplishment.

CONSPIRACIST BELIEFS SCALE
Opis:
This paper presents the results of a study on the Polish version of the Generic Conspiracist Beliefs Scale (GCBS), which was designed to measure individual differences in conspiracist thinking (Brotherton, French, & Pickering; 2013). The Polish version of the scale had excellent internal consistency as measured by Cronbach alpha: .93. The Polish version also had excellent test-retest stability. To check the validity of the questionnaire, various tools were used to measure the characteristics that can be correlated with conspiracist thinking. As a result, it was found that conspiracist thinking is positively correlated with the external locus of control, the results obtained in the Scale of Belief in Zero-Sum Game and the results of the MMPI-2 Paranoia scale. It was also found that patients with paranoid personality disorder and paranoid schizophrenia had higher results on the adapted scale than healthy subjects. In sum, the Polish version of GCBS had satisfactory psychometric properties, which makes it useful for measuring conspiracist thinking.

Metacognition is a complex construct widely investigated in SLA studies, also those that focus on reading skills and reading comprehension. Ample research points to metacognition as a strong predictor in developing foreign language reading skills, thus promoting metacognitive strategies in FL education is highly recommended. This paper presents a report on a study in which Polish FL learners kept a diary for a period of one month and wrote comments in reference to the reading classes in which they participated. The data obtained from the students’ narrations allowed to examine the learners’ metacognitive beliefs defined in the study as knowledge about cognition, consisting of three components: person knowledge, task knowledge, and strategy knowledge (Flavell, 1981). The diary data were analyzed in a global narrative way, which enabled the researcher to examine a complex character and a dynamic nature of metacognition in relation to the reading lessons. The findings underline a double role that learner diaries played in this study: as a research tool useful in investigating learners’ metacognition and an effective task that seemed to facilitate the learners’ reflection skills.

Several authors (Frijda, Manstead, & Bem, 2000; Van Veen & Lasky, 2006) suggest that emotions, cognitions, and identities are intrinsically related. Authors in social psychology (Fiedler & Bless, 2000; Frijda, Manstead, & Bem, 2000; Rosiek, 2003) have considered how beliefs are particularly sensitive to affective influences and how emotions, cognitions, and identities are intrinsically related. Understanding this relationship would help researchers to reveal complex key issues in beliefs research, such as the relationship between beliefs and action. Yet, although research on beliefs in applied linguistics goes back to the 70s and 80s, there has been scant connection with emotions and identities. This paper aims to reflect on the relationship between beliefs, emotions, and identities by looking at these coconstructing, overlapping concepts to advance our understanding of language learning and teaching. Through a review of studies on beliefs, emotions, and identities within applied linguistics and other areas, I illustrate how beliefs and emotions are intrinsically and interactively related, and how beliefs within a socio-historical context influence the construction of identities. Identities influence the kinds of emotions and beliefs that individuals attribute to themselves and to others. Emotions, in turn, can influence identities and how we construct them. Implications for research on beliefs, emotions, and identities are suggested.

Opis:
The question whether perceptual experiences justify perceptual beliefs is ambiguous. One problem is the well familiar skeptical one. How can perceptual experiences justify beliefs if those experiences may systematically deceive us? Our experiences might be just as they are and yet the world might be radically different. But there is also another problem about the justification of perceptual beliefs which arises independently of the above skeptical worry. This other problem has to do with our understanding of the very notion of justification. It seems natural to think that justification can exist only in so far as what is justified is inferentially linked to the justifier. The question, then, is whether perceptual experiences can serve as an inferential basis for perceptual beliefs. The content of experiences does not seem to be the same sort of content that is possessed by beliefs. So the nature of the relation be- tween experiences and beliefs is far from obvious. In this paper I survey various attempts of justifying the view that there is an inferential relation between experiences and beliefs so that the latter can be justified by the former and I argue that none of those attempts is satisfactory. I also suggest that the problem which those attempts address may be illusory. Even though it seems true that experiences and beliefs possess different kinds of contents, there may be no logical gap between those contents that needs to be bridged by some philosophical reflection.

Opis:
The paper focuses on discovering the relationships between pedagogical architecture and classroom didactics. It is looking for an answer to the question what beliefs teacher trainees have about pedagogical spaces, what connections they see between efficient learning and the organisation of pedagogical spaces, and how they would organise space during their own teaching practice. During the study, two methods were used: unstructured reflective diaries (N=29) and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). The key point of fsQCA data analysis was the conversion of qualitative data into fuzzy sets. This process was done in several steps. Results shed light on the functional space model of the school, and highlighted the significance of individual, social, learning, and private spaces. The complex space representation of the students showed the school architecture, the inner world of the institution, forms, colours, and the unity of objects and internal space. All this has an effect on methodological culture as non-classical space organisation facilitates the use of new generation methods.

Theoretical framework within which this paper is set is the conception of teachers’ epistemological beliefs. The author’s attention is focused on the classification of teachers’ beliefs in the realistic, contextual and relativistic approach. The question that permeates this study is whether the teacher’s beliefs are consistent with their work in practice. A questionnaire was made for the purpose of the research and the sample encompasses 420 teachers in Serbia. Results show that the subjects mostly estimate that they belong to a constructivist profile. However, their answers indicate that their acting is different from their self-assessment. Research findings imply a need for an awakening of teachers with regards to personal epistemologies.

This paper explores freedom of philosophical and non-religious beliefs in Bulgaria. It outlines the constitutional framework of this freedom both in the contemporary Bulgarian constitutional model based on the current 1991 Constitution and in Bulgarian constitutional history as well as previous fundamental laws – the 1879, 1947, and 1971 Constitutions. The paper explores both the legal and socio-legal aspects of freedom of philosophical and non-religious beliefs, analysing the role of normative ideologies in the context of secularism – specifically, the largely secular Bulgarian society. The paper demonstrates the relationship between freedom of philosophical and non-religious beliefs and freedom of religion in Bulgaria. Attention is devoted to organised philosophical and non-religious beliefs. The article explains why freedom of philosophical and non-religious beliefs is protected as an individual and not as a collective right. The paper also explores the practical problems of the philosophical and non-religious beliefs in Bulgaria.
Badaniami objęto prawne i socjologiczno-prawne aspekty wolności przekonań światopoglądowych i niewyznaniowych, a stawiane pytania dotyczą roli ideologii normatywnych w zsekularyzowanym kontekście – w tym przypadku, wyraźnie świeckim społeczeństwie Bułgarii.

I give both semantic and axiomatic characterization of conditional beliefs. They are interpreted in terms of plausibility or preference ordering on worlds. I also investigate the relation between notions of belief and knowledge. The logic may be used, for example, for epistemic analysis of some extensive form games.

Young people constitute a characteristic group of the unemployed. The notion of work has many various meanings for them, which offers them opportunities for both personal development and for growing up in a role of a member of a specific community. Social competences, including the declared beliefs, are named among the causes of the unemployment of young people. This article endeavours to provide the diagnosis of the beliefs of young people (school and university students) regarding the long-term unemployed, and to show the selected correlations. 1084 persons participated in the study, including 588 secondary (general and technical) school students and 496 students of various faculties of tertiary education from nine provinces of Poland. The results of the analyses indicate that young people declare the firmest belief that the long-term unemployed have poorer knowledge and the weakest belief that the long-term unemployed are to be blamed for their own occupational situation. The results presented may be useful for the purpose of perfecting specific strategies and forms of assistance and prevention provided to young people by specialists and voluntaries .

Aim. The aim of the article is to understand how Chinese parents draw on their learning beliefs and experiences within the Chinese educational context to make decisions about their children’s overseas education, as well as analysing how their learning beliefs are similar or different from East Asian or Western learning beliefs. Methods. The study is based on more than 100 in-depth separate interviews with 22 Chinese families conducted over serval years between 2016 and 2019. Based on interpretative phenomenological analysis and discourse analysis, the results are coded according to the theory of values proposed by Clyde Kluckhohn (1951). These learning values are further coded according to whether they are reflective of the American learning model (EALM), Confucian learning model (CLM), and Confucian learning philosophies. Results. The analysis shows that Chinese parents have displayed similar learning beliefs in socialising their children in the family domain, in their disapproval of the Chinese education system, and in their pursuit of a Western overseas education. The Chinese families’ pursuit of a Western education for their children are driven by their cultural leaning beliefs, which are rooted in Confucian heritage culture, and which also echo European American heritage cultures. Conclusion. Many researchers tend to emphasise cultural differences in learning, particularly between Confucian heritage and European American heritage cultures. This paper shows the possibilities of cultural learning values shaping educational choices, expands upon the understanding of Confucian heritage culture, and suggests the similarities between the learning cultures of East Asia and the West.

Beliefs reflect the way we think about different issues, attitudes and behaviours. Many of them are wrong, or – at best – simplified. Beliefs also relate to the didactics of foreign languages. This paper discusses the qualities, sources and consequences of these beliefs and presents the results of research conducted on a group of 434 students regarding beliefs among other individual variables and the process of learning a foreign language.

Mathematics-related beliefs play an important role in giving a teacher directions for taking decisions and for their behavior in a mathematics class. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to reveal the profile of teachers’ mathemat- ics-related beliefs, the consistency among belief dimensions, teachers’ practical profile in a mathematics class, and the consistency between beliefs and teachers’ practices in a mathematics class. This research used surveys with a cross-sec- tional design to collect data from 325 elementary school teachers in Jakarta. Teachers’ beliefs instruments and teachers’ practices in mathematics class were used to collect data. The findings of this research indicate that teachers tend to be constructivism-oriented but are not accompanied with suitable practices in mathematics class. Moreover, complex relationships also occur in both belief dimensions and in their relationships with the practices in a mathematics class.

The aim of the paper is to extend our formal model of persuasion with an aspect of change of uncertainty interpreted probabilistically. The general goal of our research is to apply this model to design a logic and a software tool that allow for verification of persuasive multi-agent systems (MAS). To develop such a model, we analyze and then adopt the Probabilistic Dynamic Epistemic Logic introduced by B. Kooi. We show that the extensions proposed in this paper allow us to represent selected aspects of persuasion and apply the model in the resource re-allocation problem in multi-agent systems.

The diversity of religious beliefs still surprises even scholars most familiarwith these phenomena. What is most surprising is the sheer numberof practices that reflect relations between deities and men – ranging from„devotion”, „cooperation”, to trying to „trick” deities. There have beenmany theories explaining the cause of these relations and the diversityof religious beliefs including the simplest, that these relations are true andreflect an ontological order.Leaving the question regarding the existence of supernatural beingsaside, we’re still left with a very interesting issue of human beliefs. Whydo we have such different beliefs? Why are we so attached to them? Do theyhave anything in common? What were the origins of religious beliefs? Did they changed through time?Pascal Boyer, French anthropologist studying the human mind and theprocess of learning among other issues tries to answer these, and otherquestions. He bases his answers on scientific researches of other scholars – anthropologists, evolutionary biologists, cognitive psychologists andlinguists. Boyer employs researches from such different scientific fieldsto find a new and very interesting way to try to reach the origins of religious beliefs, to reconstruct the process of forming beliefs concerning themetaphysical/non-physical world. He also tries to explain the nature of relations between men and deities. As a result of his efforts he created a theory explaining beliefs and religious behaviors that refers only to the mechanisms of human brain, and this theory is the subject of this article.

Aim. The present study is focused on exploring of the relationship between spirituality and irrational beliefs particularly in relation to movement activities in Slovakia and Czechia, i.e., helplessness, idealisation, perfectionism, external vulnerability, and negative expectation.  Concept. Our research has been focused on the investigation, comparison, and correlation between the level of spirituality and irrational beliefs depending on the frequency of sport activities.  Method. The research sample (N = 469) consisted of Slovak and Czech health population aged 18-70 (M = 41.97, SD = 13.14), of which 42.2% were men (N = 198) and 57.8% were women (N = 271). The level of spirituality was identified by means of the Expressions of Spiritual Inventory-Revised – ESI-R (MacDonald, 2000). The irrational beliefs were measured using the Scale of Irrational Beliefs (Kondáš & Kordáčová, 2000).  Results. Research results confirmed the differences between the variables of spirituality and irrational beliefs based on the frequency of sports activities. Also, we confirmed the hypothesis of negative correlation between spirituality and irrational beliefs.  Conclusion. In our study, we focused on the correlations between irrational beliefs and spirituality in group of Slovak and Czech population. Based on our results we can draw several conclusions. Research results confirmed the differences between the variables of spirituality and irrational beliefs based on frequency of sports activities.

This study investigates how Swedish learners make sense of and perceive English instruction and the process of foreign language learning in a target language-only primary school classroom. In small group discussions, 26 learners aged 9-10 were audio recorded while discussing questions related to their language learner beliefs and their classroom experiences. Learners expressed a strong consensus about the importance of both the teacher’s extensive target language input and the learners’ oral engagement, in alignment with the beliefs of the teacher. However, the analysis identified three mismatches among high anxiety learners in this context, related to incomprehensible teacher talk, social fear of making mistakes and classroom organization. As their voiced beliefs were at odds with their emotionally guided behavior of refraining from asking questions or volunteering to speak, their sense of agency was reduced. In this context, the target language-only approach appeared to have a negative impact on the emotional, organizational and instructional dimensions of foreign language instruction for many of the young learners. The findings illustrate the interrelated dynamics of beliefs, emotions and classroom context, and contribute to our understanding of learners’ foreign language anxiety and sense of agency in the primary foreign language classroom.

National cultural and religious heritage presents valuable repository of knowledge and wisdom. The article focuses on the understanding, classification and interpretation of Christian beliefs and the Gospel messages presented in the book of Fr. Zoricic (published in Venice 1780), whose theological thoughts were inspired and reinforced by various Italian and Latin writers of the time. The aim of this research is twofold: to preserve this rare spiritual book and to use it as a code of ethics. How was the dichotomy of good and evil presented in the Book? How did Zoricic describe Our Lady, God and the Body of Christ? To whom did he refer the most? To whom did he devote his writing? To be able to attempt answering these questions the Book was digitized, transcribed and transliterated.. On the basis of core terminology, extracted by natural language processing tool, a detailed linguistic analysis is provided.

The present research intends to investigate the relationship of psychological hardiness with irrational beliefs, emotional intelligence and work holism among high school teachers. The sample includes 100 male and female high school teachers working in schools in Ghorveh city (In IRAN) in the academic year 2012-2013. To collect data, Kobassa Psychological Hardiness Questionnaire, Jones Irrational Belief Questionnaire which includes 100 questions, Bar-on questionnaire contains 90 questions about emotional intelligence and Aghabeigi Workaholics Questionnaire was used. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (t-test and regression analysis) were used. The findings indicated that there is a negative and significant relationship between psychological hardiness with irrational beliefs and work holism. There is also a positive relationship between the psychological hardiness and emotional intelligence. Furthermore, there is a significant negative relationship between emotional intelligence with irrational beliefs and work holism. Finally, the results suggest that there is significant difference between the psychological hardiness, irrational beliefs and work holism of the male and female; and no significant difference between the emotional intelligence of the men and women sampled.

The study examined the relationship between metacognitive learning strategies and motivational beliefs, predicting academic performance of student teachers. The main aim of the study was to examine the predictive value of motivational beliefs and metacognitive learning strategies for students’ academic performance. In the study 307 student teachers of the Faculty of Education completed the revised version of Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (Pintrich & de Groot, 1990). Regression analyses revealed that a higher sense of self-efficacy predicted better academic performance and a higher test anxiety predicted poorer academic performance. The implications of motivational orientation for cognitive engagement and self-regulation at the faculty are discussed.

This study presents the findings of a survey regarding the beliefs of parents of children in early childhood education about the role that, in their opinion, kindergarten plays in the literacy of their children and the possible differences in teaching practices between kindergarten and primary school. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews of 15 mothers. The research was carried out at Patras, in the spring of 2017. The data was analyzed with the content analysis method and the results show a variety of beliefs about the parents’ expectations regarding the literacy methods at kindergarten, prevalent of which is the belief that children should be taught the mechanics of reading written work at kindergarten through games and without placing emphasis on the learning outcome. On the other hand, the participants seem to have accepted the emphasis of systematic teaching at year one of primary school.

The present study brings to light a new Sasanian mace in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England, acquired in 1971 from the Bomford Collection. The bronze mace head is in the shape of three ram heads, has an iron shaft, and a bronze pommel in the shape of a hand holding a ball. The mace incorporates several important decorative motifs – the ram heads which can be linked to the royal farr and to Central Asian visual language; the pearl necklace which is another symbol of the royal farr, and the triple dot motif which may have links to the star Tishtriya, to Apam Napat, or to Buddhist symbolism. In addition to these elements there is the hand motif, whose meaning is still unknown but might be linked to Asian symbolic hand gestures. The mace or scepter was an important element of royalty and of religion in Iran and Central Asia and the example in the Ashmolean museum is an important addition in the study of Iranian visual language and royal image in the specific context of Indo-Iranian mutual influence. In the present authors' opinion, the present mace is likely to date, based on relations with other objects, from the 5th - 7th Centuries and is likely to originate from Eastern-Iran or is rooted in Eastern-Iranian artistic tradition.

The aim of the current study is to examine the relationship between the pedagogical beliefs of teachers and their profession and to examine how this relationship affects teachers’ self-efficacy perception, satisfaction, and other functional characteristics of the teacher within the educational system. More specifically, the study seeks to compare the pedagogical beliefs of Muslim teachers who teach Religion subjects (i.e. Islamic studies) and the pedagogical beliefs of teachers of secular studies (i.e. Mathematics). According to the proposed research model, the teaching profession (that is, teaching religious Islam or teaching Mathematics) divergently affects the nature of teachers’ pedagogical beliefs, through which they function and perceive their role as teachers. The focus of our study is Arab teachers of Islam versus Arab mathematics teachers, who reflect traditional pedagogical beliefs on two levels, first by selecting teachers belonging to the Muslim minority in Israel, but also in the context of the distinction between teaching. The study hypothesis suggests that there is a difference between the pedagogical beliefs of teachers of Islamic studies and the pedagogical beliefs of Mathematics teachers. In particular, it seeks to examine the claim that teachers of Islamic studies will have a strong traditional belief and weaker constructive belief compared to teachers of secular studies. This research hypothesis has not been confirmed. In fact, except in terms of teachers’ satisfaction, no differences between the two types of teachers were found. This might indicate a change in the Arab society which deviates from the traditional Islamic halakhic approach that focuses almost entirely on religious studies and adopts a more modernized and liberal educational approach, centered on a Western education model and secularism.

This article is concerned with the relationship between adult attachment styles and generalized negativistic social beliefs (i.e. pessimistic expectations concerning human nature and interpersonal relations). Two general dimensions of attachment styles, avoidance and anxiety, are considered to be manifestations of an individual’s image of other people and of the self, respectively. We suggest that both dimensions may be a substantial basis for formulating negative beliefs about the social world. Firstly, we believe that a high level of negativistic social beliefs can be positively predicted by the growth of avoidance (negative image of others) and anxiety (negative image of self). Secondly, we formulate an expected interaction effect. Although the nature of such an interaction is ambiguous, it may be argued as having a synergistic as well as antagonistic pattern. These hypotheses were tested and supported (in favor of an antagonistic pattern of interaction in the case of the second hypothesis) on a representative sample of adult Poles (N = 853).

Opis:
Learners’ beliefs concerning the process of learning and teaching a foreign language without doubt play a very important role since they can determine the effectiveness of the instructional techniques and procedures that are employed by teachers, thereby considerably influencing the outcomes of that process. This applies in equal measure to teaching all the language skills and subsystems, including grammar instruction, or, more generally, form-focused instruction. In view of such considerations, the aim of the present paper is to report the findings of a study which sought to tap the beliefs of 106 Polish students of English philology with respect to such issues as the choice of the syllabus, the degree of integration of focus on form with meaning and message conveyance, the ways in which grammar structures are introduced and practiced as well as the provision of corrective feedback on grammar errors. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire specifically designed for this purpose (Pawlak, 2012, 2013b), which contained both Likert-scale and openended questions related to all of these areas. The analysis of the data demonstrates that the participants manifest clear preferences with respect to the process of learning and teaching grammar, which, on the one hand, may provide a basis for introducing modifications into grammar classes taught to English majors, and, on the other, makes it possible to identify areas that should be given more emphasis in the course of educating future teachers of English.

People believe that the effects of unecological behaviors may be compensated for by engaging in alternative conservation activities. The problem is, however, that those who hold such beliefs are less likely to engage in real behaviors. Understanding the structure of compensatory beliefs could potentially minimize this negative effect. In a pair of studies (qualitative and quantitative) we explored two aspects that appear key for compensatory beliefs 1) the similarity and 2) the relative difficulty of behaviors. We found that people spontaneously proposed compensatory behaviors which belonged to the same pro-ecological domain as the corresponding initial behaviors (Study 1). However, participants in the quantitative study agreed more often that they should compensate for one behavior with another when both behaviors belonged to the same cognitive category and simultaneously the compensatory behavior was relatively less demanding than the initial one (Study 2).

Science teachers communicate curricula goals to their students, prepare teaching situations and lead their students through them in order to learn science. The purpose of this study was to identify the beliefs of teachers about teaching and learning, specifically, what the teachers focus on, how they comprehend knowledge and their role in the process of learning since they can promote or hold back development of scientific literacy. Q methodology was used to investigate the beliefs of 65 science teachers by having them rank and sort a series of 51 statements. Factor analysis was used to identify identical patterns. The analysis showed that the teachers held four types of dominant beliefs about the effectiveness of science instruction and some common feature which have potential to influence educational process. Teachers concentrate on covering the content even if they declare the importance of personal construction, feel responsible for students’ learning and its outcomes. Despite stressing the activity of the students, the teachers did not emphasize particular science process skills and scaffolding process. The findings of the study suggest that systematic trainings focused on the nature of science and the scaffolding process would be beneficial for teachers in all identified factors.

The participants were 47 pre-service EFL trainee teachers from four socio-cultural contexts: Finnish, Israeli, Polish, and Spanish. Their voices have been considered because beliefs are dynamically related to actions and soon the millennial EFL teachers may implement them in the course of their teaching. The contextual approach, followed in this research, provided opportunities for discussing similarities and differences in the beliefs of Finnish, Israeli, Polish, and Spanish pre-service teachers. The identified similarities lead to outlining a tentative picture of a universal, future, post-pandemic EFL classroom.

While it is increasingly recognized that teachers have a crucial role to play in motivating learners, language teacher cognition research that focuses on beliefs about second language (L2) learner motivation and motivational practices is still rare, particularly in English for specific purposes (ESP) settings in Asia. Furthermore, much of what is available does not employ stimulated recall interviews to facilitate a comparison of espoused beliefs elicited beforehand, observed classroom practices and situated cognitions. We have employed such methodology in an under-researched ESP setting in China, to gain insights into the influence of culture and context on teacher beliefs and behavior. Our qualitative case study of three Chinese ESP teachers highlights harmony and tensions between espoused beliefs regarding student motivation and the teacher’s motivational role, and motivational practices, this harmony/disharmony being likely to impact these teachers’ self-determination. It considers possible reasons for identified tensions, including limited professional development opportunities in ESP, apparently dated knowledge of L2 motivation theory, deeply embedded Confucian values and an entrenched assessment culture. Findings suggest the need for awareness-raising and mentoring activities designed to support cognitive harmony regarding motivation and motivational practices amongst ESP teachers.

This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods research design to examine the beliefs of Vietnamese EFL students concerning oral corrective feedback (CF) and the role of some individual differences in these beliefs. The data consisted of questionnaires completed by 250 Vietnamese high school students and follow-up interviews with 15 of them. Exploratory factor analysis revealed six latent factors underlying students’ beliefs about CF, namely, (1) output-prompting CF and eliciting recasts, (2) desire for CF, (3) non-verbal cues, (4) important errors, (5) input-providing CF, and (6) less important errors. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of the interviews showed that students were positive about CF. They liked both input-providing CF and output-prompting CF for all error types. Metalinguistic feedback was the most strongly preferred, while clarification request was the least preferred. Further statistical analyses revealed some interesting relationships between students’ beliefs about CF and their gender, English learning motivation, and self-rated introversion/extraversion. Females were more positive about CF than males, and extraverted females were more positive about input-providing CF than introverted females. Also, students learning English for exams were more positive about CF than those learning English for communication. Pedagogical implications for effective feedback provision in EFL contexts are discussed.

Entrepreneurship is crucial for promoting innovation, creating employment opportunities and generating social and economic wealth in a country’s economy. In order to increase entrepreneurial activity, it is important to investigate entrepreneurial behavior by analyzing the process of businesses creation and the set of factors that favor the development of entrepreneurial aspirations, intentions and actions, which is a central goal of psychology of entrepreneurship. This research aims to deepen the knowledge about the relationship between the entrepreneurial self-efficacy, belief, motivation, family support and entrepreneurial intentions by developing a moderated mediation model. This study suggests that entrepreneurial self-efficacy partially mediates the effect of beliefs and motivations on entrepreneurial intention. This mediation is moderated by family support, which is also directly related to the intentions. The study was conducted on a sample of 446 students from four different high schools, and results support our hypotheses. Theoretical and practical implications from this research are further examined in the study.

It is now being realized that people are driven by their emotions too much greater extent than by their intellect. Therefore, most influential are those leaders who knew how to evoke appropriate emotional states in their listeners. Examples of successful propaganda provide Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and recently Rwanda. In fact, both Nazi and Soviet propaganda made it possible to exterminate thousands of people with a silent consent of common citizens. Most people are easy to manipulate because they do not realize that words are symbols that bear strong emotional load. Moreover, party and religious leaders are often not aware of the consequences of the words they use. Whether they speak of an “enemy” of the nation, religion or society their eager followers will sooner or later come to the conclusion that the enemy is a serious obstacle in the welfare of the state. It made the revolutionary to slaughter all those who dared to think and act in a different way. On the other hand, words can also create positive attitudes persuading people to offer help to those in need. It is closely connected with the way the brain works. The studies found that common are not only sensual illusions but cognitive illusions as well. They make people to act in accordance with schemas they have internalized, and to react with negative emotions to those who try to change their word outlook, and the manner of thinking since they in terpret it as an attack on their basic values.

This study reports on EFL student teachers’ opinions, beliefs and their self-awareness of developing 21st century skills, particularly the 4Cs: critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, in the Polish educational context. A questionnaire designed for the purpose of this study was administered to 53 participants who were all student teachers of English enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes. The survey results indicate that although the majority of the participants showed a low level of understanding of what 21st century skills are, they were fairly positive about integrating them into foreign language classroom instruction. At the same time, the teacher trainees tended to overrate their own abilities to develop the 4Cs in their future students. These findings suggest a greater need to raise FL teachers’ awareness as to the implementation of particular 21st century skills in the classroom. It is also postulated that enhancing such skills among student teachers in the course of teacher training is a prerequisite for 21st century skills-oriented pedagogy.

No illness had a larger impact on the lives of Japanese people in the early modern period than smallpox. Present in Japan since at least the 8th century, in the Tokugawa period smallpox became an inherent part of everyday life. In the face of insufficient medical knowledge, people turned to religion to save their families, which led to the birth of smallpox deity – hōsōgami, a bringer of illness but also a powerful protector. This paper explores the historical origins and discusses major characteristics of the smallpox deity in Tokugawa Japan as an element of folk beliefs and Shintō belief system, drawing on a popular folk tale – the tale of Sasara Sanpachi, and historical sources related to the cult of smallpox deity in the Shintō shrines of Sumiyoshi Daimyōjin and Sagi Daimyōjin.

Apotropaic behaviours in the Roman system of beliefs required the use of various forms of offerings in order to achieve the expected sacral goal. We may assume, that a full effectiveness of such actions was asserted only by human sacrifice. Along with the development of religious practices the Romans substituted human sacrifice however, in times of serious danger for the Roman community, they would reach for the early sacral experiences. In the system of Roman beliefs extremely important appeared to be the rituals at the turn of the year, which represented the periodic change of the tempus sacrum. Many of the rituals of the turn of the year played the role of lustrative rites, which were extended into practices of liberating the community from sacral miasma and received those rites which represented the destruction of cosmic order and its recovery to the state of primordial chaos. These types of ceremonies might have required a human sacrifice.

The article provides a critical-comparative analysis of selected positions lending grounds for limitation of the clasical principle of consistency of belief systems. The first part contains arguments of C. Cherniak, P. Klein, R.C. Pinto, N. Rescher and R. Brandom for the inevitability of contradictions in human belief systems. The second part presents several systems of paraconsistent doxastic logic (N.C.A. da Costa, S. French, G. Priest) formally tolerating (in various way) contradictory beliefs. The analysis especially focuses on the weaknesses of the paraconsistent interpretation of the self-deception phenomenon and the contradictions resulting from the so-called Moore's paradox.

Ordered fuzzy numbers (OFN) were introduced by Kosinski, Prokopowicz and Slęzak in 2002. The definition of OFN uses the extension of the parametric representation of convex fuzzy numbers. So far, they were applied to deal with optimization problems when data are fuzzy. In 2011 Kacprzak and Kosinski observed that a subspace of OFN called step ordered fuzzy numbers (SOFN) may be equipped with a lattice structure. In consequence, a Boolean operations like conjunction, disjunction and, what is more important, diverse types of implications can be defined on SOFN. In this paper we show how OFN can be applied in multi-agent systems for modelling agents beliefs about fuzzy expressions. Then we present preliminary version of a logic based on SOFN and study how this logic can be helpful in evaluating features of multi-agent systems concerning agents' fuzzy beliefs.
Skierowane liczby rozmyte (SLR) zostały wprowadzone przez W. Kosińskiego, P. Prokopowicza i D. Slęzaka w 2002 roku. Definicja skierowanych liczb rozmytych wykorzystuje rozszerzenie parametrycznej reprezentacji wypukłych liczb rozmytych.

To realize this goals article shows how non-formal assumption about doxa affects on its formal construction. The article discusses the place of the spruce in Slavic and Baltic customs, folk medicine, chants, and superstitions. The research has demonstrated that the tree has many meanings in Slavic culture (it is treated there as a female tree, which is suggested by its name in East Slavic languages), and although it seems to be straight and simple (because it is the way it grows) it has turned out to be a liminal tree of borderlands, connecting life with death, and allowing for a reconciliation with inevitability of passing, facilitating the passage of a dead person’s soul to the other dimension of eternal life. The spruce combines the joy of wedding (because it is included in the wedding tree) with the threat of infertility (if it is planted too close to home). Additionally, it protects cattle from witches and evil spirits (for the first pasture outing, cattle was driven with a spruce twig, or a tree was laid before the building from which the animals were driven out). Its blades, twigs, and cones were widely used as designates in folk medicine chants, and for infusions, extracts, and ointments used externally and internally as medicines.

Otrzymane wyniki poddano dyskusji.
Adaptation of adults and children to living in a stepfamily may be related to beliefs about creation of close relationships after divorce, assessment of the chances for success in remarriage and stepfamily (Higginbotham, and Adler-Baeder, 2008). The aim of this study was to analyze differences in beliefs about remarriage among divorced persons, who: established new close relationships after divorce, and remained alone after divorce. A comparison of persons, who have children from remarriage with those who do not, will also be made. The sample consisted of 157 divorced persons. About one half (n = 78) did not establish new relationships after divorce; 32.1% (n = 51) were involved in new close relationships, and approximately one fifth (n = 29; 18.2%) got remarried. 28 persons (17.6%) had children from the new relationships. In this study the Polish adaption by Kołodziej-Zaleska and PrzybyłaBasista (2014) of the IPPM – Remarriage Belief Inventory and the demograpic data were used. The difference significance tests between the groups were conducted. The obtained results show that there exist statistically significant differences between the investigated groups. Those persons who established new relationships after divorce are less convinced that a successful stepfamily is something short-term (p = .02) and a stepfamily as such is something worse (p = .003), if compared with the divorced persons living alone. On the other hand parents who had children from both previous and current relationship were more convinced that the previous marriage should be left behind (p = .001). These research results were discussed.

Opis:
According to St. Thomas Aquinas, there are three ways to know God: 1. Theoretical knowledge of that field of knowledge. 2. Theoretical knowledge which is the field of faith in God’s revelation. 3. Affective knowledge – by inclination and participation. Ad 1. The existence of God is not obvious to us. We have not here on Earth, direct knowledge of God. We know God indirectly, as the cause of the world. It is a metaphysical knowledge (e.g. “five ways”), and prephilosophical. Ad 2. “The act of faith (credere) is itself an act of the intellect that assents to divine truth at the command of the will, which is moved by God through grace” (STh II–II, q. 2 a. 9). Ad 3. Affective knowledge of God is a kind of knowledge, which follows the human affectivity.

Opis:
The main objective of this study was to develop a Polish version of the Remarriage Belief Inventory (RMBI; Higginbotham, Adler-Baeder, 2008) and evaluate its psychometric properties. Data were collected from a total sample of 262 divorced people. The statistical analysis confirmed satisfactory psychometric properties of the developed Polish version of RMBI. The structure of the Polish version of RMBI obtained in a factor analysis was similar to the original one – exploratory and confirmatory analyses validated the seven-factor structure. The second objective of this study was to explore the role of beliefs about remarriages in the assessment of marital satisfaction. The sample comprised 107 remarried individuals. The regression analysis showed that among the seven original remarriage beliefs statistically significant predictors of marital satisfaction were the following three: (i) success of stepfamily is slim, (ii) new partner is perfect, and (iii) stepfamilies are second-class. Further research on this topic is needed.

Opis:
W artykule analizowano zależności między wybranymi aspektami postaw religijnych uczniów szkół ponadgimnazjalnych (N = 216). Problem badawczy brzmi: Czy postawy religijne młodzieży wykluczającej Transcendencję są wewnętrznie spójne? Wykorzystano The Post-Critical Belief Scale D. Hutsebauta, Dyferencjał semantyczny Ch. Osgooda oraz Skalę Praktyk Religijnych W. Chaima.
The article analyses correlations between selected aspects of religious beliefs of secondary school students (N = 126). The research question is: are religious beliefs of young people excluding Transcendence internally coherent? The materials used include The Post-Critical Belief Scale by D. Hautsebaut, Semantic Diff erential by Ch. Osgood and The Scale of Religious Practices by W. Chaim. The Quick Cluster allowed to distinguish four groups of diff erent ways of thinking about religion: students affi rming Transcendence in a deeper way (N = 46), interpreting Transcendence symbolically (N = 48), affi rming Transcendence passively (N = 81) and those excluding Transcendence (N = 41). The diff erences between these groups concern religious beliefs connotations. Students excluding Transcendence refer to God, Pope Benedict XVI or their Religious Education teacher in a more emotionally aloof manner than the group of young believers. However, the attitudes towards St. John Paul II and Pope Francis are very positive of both believers and non-believers, which results from the sociocultural meaning of these fi gures rather than religious beliefs. Students excluding Transcendence are characterised by a much lower level of religious practices than others, although they are not consistent in it as they participate in services quite regularly (50%), infl uenced mainly by their closest environment. This conformity, however, does not apply to the practice of individual prayer or receiving Holy Communion.

In the paper we examine discrete time dynamic games in which the global state variable changes in response to a certain function of the pro_le of layers' decisions, called statistic, while the players form some expectations about its future values based on the history. Besides, there are also players' private state variables. A general model is built, encompassing both games with _nitely many players as well as games with in_nitely many players. This model extends the class of games with distorted information considered by the author in [20], in which there were no private state variables and there were much stronger assumptions about the statistic of players' decisions considered. The notions of pre-belief distorted Nash equilibrium (pre-BDNE), self-veri_cation and belief distorted Nash equilibrium (BDNE), de_ned already in [20], are applied to our wider class of games. The relations between Nash equilibria, pre-BDNE and BDNE are examined as well as the existence and properties of pre-BDNE. A model of a _nancial market { a simpli_ed stock exchange { is presented as an example. Pre-BDNE using threshold prices are proposed. One of further results in this example is potential self-veri_cation of fundamental beliefs and beliefs in in_nite speculative bubbles.

Recently, we identified 24 factors (e.g., appearance, conformity, leisure) that may capture whether people want to be similar or different from their sexual and romantic partners on different qualities in 274 (nWomen = 225) Italians (Marchi et al., 2023; Personality and Individual Differences). In this brief report, we reanalyzed that data, but now turn our attention to content we did not report previously about relationship beliefs. Participants believed similarity was more important than complementary in relationships but beliefs that physical attractiveness is important may trump them both. However, belief that physical attractiveness is important was unrelated to any of the compatibility factors and complementarity beliefs were only related to three of them, while nearly two-thirds of the correlations with similarity beliefs were significant (e.g., residence, speech, intellect). We discussed our results in terms of how different generalized relationship beliefs may manifest themselves in how similar or different people want their romantic and sexual partners to be.

The paper presents the basic theses of Paul Moser’s epistemology of religious beliefs. This author stands against the most popular among analytical philosophers models of argumentism and reformed epistemology. He emphasizes that if God is a personal being, then it is up to Him to determine the conditions and aims of His revelation. According to Moser, God’s purpose would be to reveal His moral perfection and redemption. This is why an experience of being called to a moral conversion by an intentionally acting external agent is the salient evidence justifying the rationality of theism. New epistemological perspective allows polemics with the hiddenness argument formulated by J.L. Schellenberg. Moser, in his refutation of this argument, shows that the existence of cognitively non-resistant non-believers does not prove God’s nonexistence, because lack of cognitive resistance to God is not a sufficient disposition allowing the reception of the transformative gift. The necessary condition for experiencing agapē as a divine self-manifestation is readiness to conform one’s own will to the demands of the divine love.

Contrary to a widespread thesis about the non-cognitive character of religious beliefs, I argue that it is beneficial to highlight and not marginalize the place of religion in the epistemic sphere. At least some religious beliefs (especially theism) can be qualified as true or false. Holding them as true is usually based on the evidence which is not widely accepted. This, however, does not entail that these beliefs are not true. If they are true, then holding them to be true should be seen as rational, despite of the fact, that the supporting evidence does not seem to be strong in the light of current epistemic standards of justification. It does not mean, however, that such beliefs can be hold with the highest assertion if they evoke serious doubts. Changes in religious doctrines and religious pluralism do not constitute a sufficient reason for excluding religion from the epistemic sphere, as a similar situation concerns many academic disciplines, such as philosophy, or psychology.

In this paper I compare George Berkeley’s evaluation of utility of the Christian religion, as presented in his Alciphron (1732), with John Stuart Mill’s re-evaluation, contained in his posthumously printed essay Utility of Religion (1874). I obviously take also into account the two philosophers’ other works provided the utility in question is discussed there to some important extent. I argue, among others, that Berkeley’s claim that the Christian religion is necessarily and most greatly useful, i.e. inevitably leads to the happiness of mankind, as well as Mill’s acceptance of rather the contrary claim, logically depend on assumptions regarding either the world as such (Berkeley), or the human mind as such (Mill), hence one cannot, indeed, decide the problem apart from taking them into consideration.

The article deals with the relations between religion and psychology in the period of the rising classic (“historical”) schools of psychology from 1879 until the late 1950s. These years were significant for psychology as an independent discipline. The emphasis is put on the important psychologists’ attitudes towards religion and religious belief. Among others the views of W. Wundt, F. Brentano, W. James, S. Freud, C.G. Jung, A. Adler, E. Fromm, W. Stern, R. Otto, G.S. Hall, G.H. Mead, J.B. Watson, H.J. Eysenck and G. Allport are presented. The article illustrates a number of phenomena which are necessary to understand the above-mentioned problem. Particular attention should be paid to the search for ideological identity of psychology in the “historical” period, some terminological issues and the changes of psychological schools’ attitudes towards religion and religiosity.
Znaleźli się wśród nich, m.in.: W. Wundt, F. Brentano, W. James, S. Freud, C.G. Jung, A. Adler, E. Fromm, W. Stern, R. Otto, G.S. Hall, G.H.Mead, J.B. Watson, H.J. Eysenck i G. Allport.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the relationship between students’ skills in multiple representations of fractions and self-efficacy beliefs about the usage of the multiple representations of fractions. 232 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, attending three elementary schools in Turkey’s three provinces, Erzurum, Rize and Trabzon, participated in the study. “Multiple representation of fractions flexibility test” which had three sub-dimensions as recognition, conversion and problem solving, and “Beliefs about the use of multiple representations questionnaire” were administered to the students. The data indicated that there was a significant relationship between the students’ multiple representation skills and self-efficacy beliefs about the use of multiple representations. Particularly, conversion skill was found to be a powerful predictor of self-efficacy beliefs of students towards multiple representations.

Stalnaker – w przeciwieństwie do Lewisa i Perry’ego – broni tradycyjnej koncepcji przekonań.
Self-locating beliefs are problematic for the popular theory according to which a belief is a two-argument relation between a thinker and a proposition. The theory does not explain the cognitive value of self-locating beliefs and their impact on behavior. Self-locating beliefs seem to be irreducible to singular beliefs about oneself, because one might have the latter without having the former. David Lewis, John Perry, and Robert Stalnaker each proposed a different solution to the problem. Stalnaker – unlike Perry and Lewis – defends the traditional theory of beliefs. His solution requires an assumption that a lack of self-locating belief can always be represented as ignorance with regard to which world is the actual one. I discuss Clas Weber’s arguments against this solution.

In ancient Japanese beliefs there was no specific concept of the underworld even though those beliefs were based on a cult of ancestors. The land of the dead, anoyo, had no specific location. It was not situated underground, nor in heaven – it was somewhere close to the world of the living, so that the spirits of the ancestors could watch over their relatives. More information about the Land of the Dead appears in the chronicles of Kojiki and Nihogi describing the death of the goddess Izanami and her departure to Yomi. A more extensive image of the underworld, especially a vision of hell with multiple levels, appeared on the Japanese Islands with the arrival of Buddhism. This article analyses different visions of the underworld that have developed in Japanese beliefs throughout history. Both Shintoist and Buddhist beliefs are discussed, as well as myths and legends about deities, demons and creatures related to death and the Land of the Dead.

Interest and self-efficacy beliefs are important components of motivational constructs that share some common characteristics and influence learning. Studies examining how these two relate to each other, however, appear to be few, especially in the area of language learning. To fill this gap, this study aims to investigate how interest in learning English and proficiency influence self-efficacy in listening, using a pre/post-design. This study focused on exploring the role of interest on the development of self-efficacy in 107 EFL Korean university students, with a low-intermediate English proficiency. Despite the participants' proficiency, they were found to possess and maintain relatively high interest over the English course they were enrolled in. Regression analyses revealed that, unlike at the beginning of the course, individual interest was found to be a significant factor in the development of advanced skill self-efficacy around the end of the semester, even predicting it more than proficiency did.

In this paper, the empirical and theoretical contributions of an attribution approach to emotion and motivation are reviewed. It is contended that reported empirical findings regarding when causal search is initiated, the perceived causes of events, the three underlying properties of causes (locus, stability, and control), and the relations between these properties and emotion and expectancy are definitively replicable. In addition, these data provide the foundation for both interpersonal (e.g., help-giving) and intrapersonal (e.g., achievement strivings) theories of motivation. Hence, attribution theory has left a theoretical foundation and a supporting array of data. In addition, the theory sheds light on some weaknesses of other approaches to motivation, which err in their understanding of phenomenal causality. The characterization of attribution theory as naïve or “grandmother” psychology is discussed and it is contended that a distinction must be made between its empirical versus conceptual features.

In my article I reconstruct the main threads of Robert Stalnaker’s book Our Knowledge of the Internal World, which focuses on the problem of our epistemic relation to our experience and the relation between experience and knowledge. First, the book proposes an interesting view of externalism, which combines classical externalist claims with a contextualist approach to content ascriptions. The approach accommodates some important internalist intuitions by showing how content ascriptions can be sensitive to the perspective from which a subject perceives the world. Second, Stalnaker proposes a theory of selflocating and phenomenal knowledge, which should be understood in terms of differentiating between real possibilities. The puzzling upshot of this elegant solution is that it commits one to the existence of possibilities accessible only from the first-person perspective. Finally, Stalnaker presents an argument which shows that our knowledge about our phenomenal experience is no more direct than the knowledge about external objects. Stalnaker’s claim that by merely having an experience we don’t learn any new information seems, however, too strict in light of his contextualist approach to content ascriptions.

Opis:
Prezentowane studium socjologiczne zajmuje się problematyką przemian religijności młodzieży słowackiej – konkretnie trzech podstawowych wymiarów religijności, a mianowicie wiary, wierzeń i praktyk religijnych – konkretnie w latach 2006 – 2016.
In the sociological study presented in this article, Ondrej Štefaňak deals with the issues of changes in religiosity among Slovak youth. Štefaňak zooms in on three basic dimensions of religiosity, namely, religious faith, beliefs and practices; the period covered by this research concretely is the decade 2006 to 2016. Štefaňak’s discussion is based on theoretical reflection related to the main paradigms and models of religious changes among young people in the postmodern world. Štefaňak refers mainly to empirical data from last four population censuses in Slovakia and to two instances of sociological research of religiosity among the young generation from the Spiš diocese in northern Slovakia (Spiš, Liptov and Orava regions). This empirical data not only supports the model of advancing secularization and the reinforcement of the phenomenon of “belonging without believing”. In fact this research also partially confirms the model of stabilization or even revitalization of religiosity among the young generation of Slovaks.

Opis:
New challenges generated for teacher education in the context of dynamic changes in socio-cultural and technological reality are putting the issues of the teacher's professionalism in a new light. The purpose of this study is an attempt to reconstruct ways of understanding the professionalism of an early education teacher and its dimensions from the perspective of pre-service teachers. The concept of research is based on the assumption that starting education by reconstructing the common beliefs of the candidates for teachers about selected areas of education plays a key role in the constructivist-oriented teacher education. Revealing ways to conceptualize and assess the professionalism of early education teachers by those who begin pedagogical studies allows for planning ways of using their common knowledge on this subject and to predict directions of their studies. The text is based on a qualitative analysis of written statements by students starting studies in the area of pre-school and early school education. Obtained research results that indicate a dominating perception of the professionalism of the teacher working with children at the early school age allow to determine the necessary directions of changes in the education of future teachers. This perception visible in teachers’ statements are instrumental, “closed” and based on a selected teaching paradigm.
Nowe wyzwania generowane pod adresem edukacji nauczycielskiej w kontekście dynamicznych zmian rzeczywistości społeczno-kulturowej i technologicznej stawiają w coraz to nowym świetle kwestie profesjonalizmu nauczyciela.

Opis:
The paper addresses the problem of the axiological implications of beliefs in the context of pluralistic societies. For this purpose, the question of beliefs is placed within a dynamic concept of individual or communitarian identity, so-called narrative identity. This concept is based on the identity of a character correlated his action represented by a plot. On the social level, the coexistence of the strong identifications rooted in beliefs requires the acceptance of an appropriate model. This study is an attempt to answer the question whether a purely formal character of the universalization rule and the argumentative procedures is sufficient in this regard. In this perspective there is a risk of an annihilation of the axiological background which is decisive as far as the human involvement in a responsible construction of the social life is concerned. To protect the investigations from an excessive abstraction, they are transferred in the field of a phenomenological research on the motivation of human will. This inquiry is completed by a confrontation with the formal principle of universalization elaborated by Kant. As a result, the two opposite perspectives seem to be complementary. The two final examples of a wise deliberation and some possible coexistence of strong beliefs in the area of historical policy provide the reader with a larger model of such a coexistence.

The text presents a pedagogically important issue of textbooks for ethnic education. The exam-ples investigated are textbooks for early Kashubian education. In Polish pedagogy, ethnic text-books are rarely the subject of research in the field of early education pedagogy, regional edu-cation pedagogy and intercultural pedagogy. For this reason, they are periodically a subject of critical research which is aimed at examining them in the context of pedagogical reflections on cultural aspects of religiosity and religious beliefs. Religiosity and religious beliefs are the key area of the article. They allowed the textbook to present an aspect of “the truth” about ethnic identity (Kashubian identity). It also enabled me to recognize the textbook pattern of identity as a pattern of identity behaviours (Tadeusz Lewowicki) in the areas of language (Kashubian speech) and religious behaviours (Catholicism) and beliefs (Slavic-Kashubian).

Aim. The purpose of conducting a self-contained study on the naming of visiting places was the main motivation for this study. It is aimed to examine the historical background, visiting times, pre- and post-visit practices of mausoleum and grave visits seen in Turkish culture based on the regions of Bolu and Duzce, and to create a classification related to the ways in which the visiting places are named. Methods. This study covers the places of visit in Bolu and Duzce provinces in general, and visits to mausoleums in particular. Research: traditions, customs, rites, ceremonies have been revealed based on folk beliefs by using the discipline and methods of folklore. The data were collected through interview, participatory observation, and unattended observation methods. Results. As a result of this study, in Bolu 50, in Duzce 17 the tomb and the grave were examined and it was determined how and according to what these sacred places received their names. Conclusion. In almost every study conducted on sacred places of visit, various researches have been carried out by different disciplines on the naming of sacred places, and a new naming study was being conducted each time according to the characteristics of the region. This has led to the emergence of independent classifications. In this regard, there has been a need to conduct a comprehensive study of the naming and including the characteristics of the person buried in the grave. Based on this need, it was both the first in this field of study and a classification was put forward.

Opis:
The article concerns judicial integrity in its basic meaning, i.e. as the consistency of actions with beliefs. Firstly, a reconstruction of the role of a judge’s beliefs was undertaken on the basis of the philosophy law, which allowed for proving that at least on the grounds of the so-called third path theory, they are treated as essential. However, acknowledging their role raises questions about the danger of instrumentalising law by the judge and of instrumentalising the judge by the law. Ronald Dworkin’s philosophy which extensively refers to the concept of integrity was interpreted as a solution to the issue. Then, it was noted that this approach is too narrow, as it limits the possibility of including the judge’s beliefs in adjudication only when they meet the requirements of so-called appropriateness tests, and are therefore already included in the content of the legal order in some way. Furthermore, integrity in this sense does not cover the judge’s behaviours besides decision-making, the status of which increasingly requires a theoretical explanation and normative classification. In consequence, it was stated that the concept of integrity is connected with paradoxes. In spite of that, an attempt was made to design a more systematic approach to judicial integrity in adjudication and behaviour, which would lead to proving that it is something that should be cared about, and consequently, its behaviour should be made the object of normative and institutional solutions. At the same time, the concept of integrity seems to have more heuristic power than normative one.

The purpose of the article is to show how the religious education that B. F. Skinner experienced changed his perception of man and the world, and ultimately influenced his abandonment of faith and directed him onto the path of radical behaviorism. Analysis of the available literature shows that the difference in the views of Skinner’s opponents (Joseph Wood Krutch, Tomasz Szasz, Ayn Rand) and his allies (Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris) lies in their different upbringing and complex life experiences. Related beliefs influenced their understanding of spirituality and free will.

Opis:
First of all the article looks at the building of an a posteriori logic of beliefs i.e. observation developed on the principle of how, people usually think, what kind of judgments they make about reality and what actually is described by the truth of the judgments under the influences of beliefs. In this situation, we have to depart from the customary practice of a priori semantics of possible worlds in favour of semantics for models intended. Secondly, we find that in practice, human judgments indirectly accept a logic of thinking generally, which leads us - thirdly - to define this logical system as an extension of intuitionistic logic. Fourthly, and finally, our empirically generated logic of beliefs, proves to be logic of hypotheses and suppositions, because judgments made on the basis of intuitionistic logic are not assertive judgments.

Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to estimate some basic data related to the fertility in the chosen groups of Polish and Czech women. We have tried to acquire and analyze the attitudes and beliefs of these women in motherhood and the desire to have children. These data enable to verify the interdisciplinary hypothesis explaining the decline of birth rate and low fertility in European countries. Materials and methods: The authors performed the survey by means of a questionnaire formulated after a comprehensive discussion of possible reasons of birth rate decline. They have tried through the questions of the survey to verify the hypothesis that the decline is the result of the cumulative mental changes occurring in contemporary societies. The questionnaire completed 90 Polish women students pursuing complementary studies of nursing in Higher School of Applied Sciences in Nysa, during the academic year 2012/2013. The questionnaire also completed 53 Czech women students pursuing part-time studies and training at the Tomas Bata University in Zlin (the Czech Republic). Results: The above surveyed 90 Polish women gave birth to 132 children, so fertility rates is 1.46. The average age at the birth of the first child was 24.7 years, of the second child 27.5 and of the third child 31.7 years. The surveyed 53 Czech women gave birth to 86 children, so fertility rates is 1.62. The average age at birth of the first child was 24.7 years, of the second child 27.2 and of the third child 27,5 years. The authors present also convictions, beliefs and attitudes of the women under study. Conclusions: The multifaceted and interdisciplinary hypothesis (theoretical model) formulated at the outset of our work, can be useful for attempts to estimate the pro-family attitudes in different populations of women. The results in the light of compliance with the proposed theoretical model allow for the formulation of proposals for action, which would counteract the decline in birth rates.
Średni wiek ankietowanej w momencie narodzin pierwszego dziecka wynosił 24,7 lat, w momencie narodzin drugiego dziecka: 27,5 i trzeciego dziecka: 31,7 lat.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to examine the relationship between happiness and religious beliefs. THE RESEARCH PROBLEMS AND METHODS: The research problem is contained in the question: What is the relationship between happiness and religious beliefs in the light of the theoretical- cognitive analysis? The literature on the subject was analyzed. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The analysis of the literature relevant to the subject began with selected approaches to happiness, among others in relation to positive psychology. Next, the researcher referred to category – religious beliefs, and finally, the relationship between two the analyzed categories was examined. The process concluded with forensic attention that was focused on the conclusions resulting from this analysis. RESEARCH RESULTS: Happiness, determined by many factors, including essentially a person’s personality and the events that occur in his /her life, is linked to the religious beliefs. Religious people tend to be happy more than those without beliefs. Thus, it can be implied that there is a correlation between the categories: religious beliefs and happiness. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The conducted analysis of the research subject, eliciting aspects of positive psychology such as happiness, the sense of meaning in life, indicated an important factor shaping positive attitudes towards the life trajectory, which are religious beliefs. This issue should be dealt with in the future in the context of shaping a mature human personality, which is undoubtedly influenced by religious beliefs and their quality considered in the category of the quality of spiritual life, and the quality of life, in general.
Osoby religijne wykazują większą tendencję do bycia szczęśliwymi. Zachodzi zatem korelacja pomiędzy przekonaniami religijnymi a szczęściem.

“How Come We Don’t Deliver?” asks Elana Shohamy in the title of her paper on imagined multilingual schools and tackles the striking issue in education: the need for a paradigm shift towards a multilingual approach. This paper focuses on the role of immigrant teachers in this process. Based on the sociolinguistic framework of linguistic markets and the pedagogical framework of professionalization, it presents a qualitative study on teachers’ language beliefs. Using linguistic biographies, this study reconstructs how beliefs towards multilingualism emerge and develop under different educational settings. The findings indicate significant deviations in the perception of multilingualism and showcase deep insights into the development of these perceptions over time. The results reveal the importance of socio-political setting and contribute to a reflected understanding of linguistic diversity management in multilingual education and the need for teacher professionalization.

Data from surveys indicate that people, in general, do not trust others. On the other hand, in one-shot trust games, where the player decides whether to send money to an anonymous partner, the actual rate of trust is relatively high. In two experiments, we showed that although reciprocity expectations and profit maximization matter, they are not decisive for trusting behaviour. Crucial factors that motivate behaviour in trust games seem to be altruism and a type of moral obligation related to a social norm encouraging cooperative behaviour. Finally, we were able to divide participants into specific profiles based on amount of money transferred to the partner, altruistic motivation, and belief in partners’ trustworthiness. This shows that the trust game is differently perceived and interpreted by different participants.

The area of folklore beliefs, even for autochthons, is still considered as not fully discovered and very often not understandable part of cultural heritage. Meanwhile, the folklore perception of the world is mostly determined by local practices and beliefs which roots are connected with pre-Christian cultural space. One of the figures present in beliefs of highlanders from Zagórze region is płanetnik. The aim of the article is to present the characteristic of beliefs and also to examine the level of knowledge about this figure among modern highlanders. Research material includes: Ethnographic publications, legends obtained recently and the results of survey conducted among the youth from high schools in Mszana Dolna. The diversity of the analysed sources will able to recreate the evolution of folklore beliefs about płanetnik during the second half of the 20 th century, moreover, it will answer the question if płanetnik and connected with him beliefs are still the part of heritage for people from Zagórze region.

This article presents the main epistemological and axiological assumptions of the Lvov-Warsaw School (LWS) and argues that these assumptions led to agnosticism and the conviction about the irrationality of religious beliefs, so common among the LWS members. It is shown that these assumptions were deeply rooted in the tradition of modern epistemic individualism and evidentialism. The final part of the paper discusses two contemporary modifications of the epistemology characteristic of Twardowski and his disciples. The first one, formulated by Jacek Jadacki, is the conception of directival rationality; the second has been proposed by Ryszard Kleszcz and can be labeled relative rationality. Both these conceptions compromise on the LWS firm position concerning the irrationality of religious beliefs and make it possible to regard such beliefs as rational.

Despite the lack of documented differences in the intensity of creative abilities between women and men, the observed disproportion between men and women in terms of creative achievements may result from different socialization and education paths of boys and girls. The purpose of the article is to compare teachers’ beliefs about the characteristics of a creative boy and a creative girl. 128 experienced kindergarten and elementary school teachers were involved in the study. The research results showed a significant diversity of teachers’ beliefs about the characteristics of girls and boys in terms of creativity. While the surveyed teachers did not notice differences in the ingenuity and originality of boys and girls (t = 0.96; p > 0.05; d = 0.08), in their opinion, a creative girl was perceived as significantly more conscientious (t = 7.03; p < 0.05; d = 0.62) and subordinated to the expectations of other people (t = 4.34; p < 0.05; d = 0.38) than a creative boy. The revealed differences were analyzed theoretically (theories of creativity, socio-cultural concepts of gender).

This paper discusses beliefs associated with human spiritual elements (often called “souls”) held by the indigenous Nahua from Sierra Zongolica, Mexico. Spiritual elements, such as tonalli, nawalli, and yolotl form part of a complex of correlated and often overlapping concepts. Such semantic intricacy related to the notion of a spiritual element is not just a local peculiarity of Sierra Zongolica. It appears in ethnographic data concerning other Nahuatl speaking areas, as well as in early colonial sources. Th erefore, the case of Nahua beliefs constitutes a challenge to monosemantic, unambiguous defi nitions of Mesoamerican indigenous concepts of human spiritual elements, as presented by many anthropologists and ethnohistorians.

Increasing numbers of citizens rely on social media to gather both political and non-political information. This fact raises questions about belief formation and belief updating in the social media setting. Using Facebook data on users’ behaviour in Poland in 2017, I test the hypothesis that individuals tend to like content that confirms their beliefs. I measure the political preferences of nearly 1.4 million users who were active on the main political and news media pages and classify them as being supporters of certain political organisations or as being politically unaffiliated. Based on the principles of analytical sociology, I construct a theoretical model that may explain the results. According to the model, users tend to like posts from only one source of information. There are also statistically significant differences in the news media preferences of supporters of different political organisations. They are prone to like posts published by sources that accord with their views. The model also correctly predicts that politically unaffiliated users choose media outlets that are considered unbiased or less biased. The results support the hypothesis that users of social media prefer exclusive or near-exclusive sources of information.

Although the COVID-19 vaccine has been recommended as the safer and more effective prevention for COVID-19 disease relative to other alternative medications, yet across the globe, many people are resistant to receiving it. Setting out to explain such a paradox, we conducted an online survey among a sample of Indonesians (N = 4758) when the World Health Organisation (WHO) granted authorisations for the clinical trial of various vaccines against COVID-19. The results revealed that participants’ support for theories that the COVID-19 vaccine is invented to harm their nation (i.e., COVID-19 vaccine conspiratorial beliefs) positively corresponded with the perceptions that international collaboration in the COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial is not aligned with their nation’s actual needs (i.e., the perceived assumptive international collaboration) and negative attitudes towards the vaccine. In turn, the perceived assumptive international collaboration was positively related to negative attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccine. We also showed that the positive relationship between COVID-19 vaccine conspiratorial beliefs and the perceived assumptive international collaboration in the vaccine clinical trial was more prominent among participants who were strongly resistant to take vaccines supplied by other countries due to national pride (i.e., vaccine national glorification).

It symbolizes strength flowing from youth, severity, and even spring, of which arrival was celebrated in a special way, that required a particular time-space. Our task is to track, in what extend Russian poet uses Slavic folk traditions, and reflects them in his works, and to what extend he modifies traditional motifs. There is a reference i.e. to Vyacheslav Ivanov and Vladimir Toporov findings. We underlined the relations between celebration of Jarila holidays with Bakhtin’s concept of life carnivalesque.

In this paper, I will argue that awareness of images and metaphors held by foreign language learners about the nature of the target language and its learning can be of substantial value and provide teaching practitioners with useful insights about how to deal with various language learning problems. To elicit images which learners hold about foreign language learning, a questionnaire was given to 350 learners of English in different places in Iran. The questionnaire asked the respondents to provide images about learning a foreign language by using a sentence completion task: “Learning a foreign language is like . . .” The responses gained in 200 questionnaires were content-analyzed and the identified images and metaphors were summarized under more broad-ranging categories. The information that the metaphors and the resulting metaphorical categories provide and the theoretical interpretations which can plausibly be made are discussed in some detail and put in a cognitive-psychological perspective.

We research the characteristics of quasi-religions as the separate phenomena that operate mainly in the form of secular organizations and that try to transform the identity of its members in their desired direction. It is emphasized that the concepts of quasi-religious and pseudo-religious beliefs are not identical and require of separate religious studies research. But it can be considered that common to both phenomena is only their arising at the boundaries between sacred and secular. The paper presents a review of quasi-religious concepts – from Tillich to Greil, as well as a description of quasi-religious practices and quasi-religious movements.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with recreational gamblers (N=67), the paper focuses on superstitious beliefs and practices used by players of various games to influence or control outcomes. The study was conducted in the spirit of the interpretative approach formed by folklorist Alain Dundes (1961). Results suggested that superstition, in a variety of forms – signs, magic, conversion – was clearly an accepted part of gambling for most respondents. Although more pronounced in games of chance, superstition appeared to be more significant in the experience of interviewees who played skill games, creating “illusion of control.” Future research on the link between superstition and religion, and on the role of social networks in fostering and developing superstition-related knowledge is warranted.

Based on selected works by Kornel Filipowicz, the article presents the writer’s reflection on the absurdity of the world in relation to Albert Camus’s literary and philosophical concept. The article has been divided into ve entitled parts, of which the rst one is an introduction to the article, and the last one is its conclusion. In Disintegration of the World two short stories by Filipowicz are presented, in which the theme of absurdity appears. According to the article’s author, they can refer to the idea of absurdity by Albert Camus. The part: Mapping the absurd uses the examples of Camus’s essays and Filipowicz’s stories to outline the ontic status of the absurd that both writers give. The next subsection, Two Sides of the Same, juxtaposes the reflections contained in one of Filipowicz’s short stories and Camus’s early parable, directing attention to both thinkers’ understanding of the idea of the absurd. In the Blind Men, the context of Pieter Bruegel’s painting „The Blind Leading the Blind” additionally appears in order to emphasise Filipowicz’s reflection on the existence of two opposing epiphanies in the world at the same time – absurdity and sense. The article closes Doxographical landscape with absurdity in the background. According to the author’s findings, the absurd in Filipowicz’s work appears in the doxographical impressions of his characters and is an expression of the subjectivity of human experience.

Learners’ beliefs on language learning and perceived self-efficacy are important to the success of their second/foreign language (SL/FL) learning. To reveal the general profiles of and relationship between Chinese students’ beliefs about English learning and self-efficacy, the present study examined beliefs about English learning and self-efficacy held by Chinese university EFL (English as a FL) learners at differing English proficiency levels. A total of 1,698 students from a top university in Beijing answered a battery of questionnaires. The results revealed a general overview of the students’ beliefs about the nature of language learning and the roles of teachers, feedback and learning strategies, and self-efficacy. Another major finding was that participants at different English proficiency levels differed significantly from one another in beliefs about language learning and self-efficacy.

Opis:
This paper presents sample results from a poll conducted among experts (scientists, philosophers and theologians) regarding the roots of the controversy between the evolutionary account of human origin and religious convictions about creation. It appears that the position one takes in this controversy is influenced much more by one’s opinions than professional background. The controversy is usually only seemingly ‘solved’ at the level of a priori assumptions, erroneous definitions of ‘evolutionism’ and ‘creationism’, semantic viewpoints, epistemological positions and pragmatic choices. The core issues in the controversy (e.g., the role and meaning of chance in random evolutionary factors versus divine providence, or problems stemming from a body-soul dualistic anthropology) are widely neglected and do not play a significant role in deciding one’s views on the matter.
