Opis:
The paper reports results of a biometric study of four features of Leymus arenarius (L.) Hochst. caryopses on the basis of 23 samples collected at marine and inland sites. The productivity of caryopses in the spike and the strength of their germination were determined.

Bringing a complex systems perspective to bear on classroom-oriented research challenges researchers to think differently, seeing the classroom ecology as one dynamic system nested in a hierarchy of such systems at different levels of scale, all of which are spatially and temporally situated. This article begins with an introduction to complex dynamic systems theory, in which challenges to traditional ways of conducting classroom research are interwoven. It concludes with suggestions for research methods that are more consistent with the theory. Research does not become easier when approached from a complex systems perspective, but it has the virtue of reflecting the way the world works.

The attenuation variability of hearing protector devices plays a primary role in determining compliance, or lack of, with occupational noise exposure limits. This study presents an estimate of the ear muff attenuation variability, which includes several factors (biological diversity, positioning, sound field, ageing) for which specific information from laboratory studies is available. A mean value of the attenuation variability for ear muffs σFR = 4.8 dB is found. This value is about 65% larger than the typical value measured according to existing test standards. Being marginally smaller than the mean variability resulting from field measurements, and certainly within the wide range of fluctuations of the latter, it represents a robust and reliable quantity for application in any workplace environment.

Opis:
The paper presents results of multivariate analysis of variations of radon concentrations in the shallow underground laboratory and a family house, depending on meteorological variables only. All available multivariate classifi cation and regression methods, developed for data analysis in high-energy physics and implemented in the toolkit for multivariate analysis (TMVA) software package in ROOT, are used in the analysis. The result of multivariate regression analysis is a mapped functional behaviour of variations of radon concentration depending on meteorological variables only, which can be used for the evaluation of radon concentration, as well as to help with modelling of variation of radon concentration. The results of analysis of the radon concentration variations in the underground laboratory and real indoor environment, using multivariate methods, demonstrated the potential usefulness of these methods. Multivariate analysis showed that there is a potentially considerable prediction power of variations of indoor radon concentrations based on the knowledge of meteorological variables only. In addition, the online system using the resulting mapped functional behaviour for underground laboratory in the Institute of Physics Belgrade is implemented, and the resulting evaluation of radon concentrations are presented in this paper.

Suevite is the impact breccia rock with glass particles that attracts the attention of researches because of its broad variability. Many characteristics of the environment and impact process determine this attention, and, in consequence, various descriptions and names of the rock are presented in the literature. The Rochechouart impact structure is a good example of suevite or suevite-like rock diversity in its several localities (Rochechouart, Chassenon, LaValette, Montoume). The relationships between suevite components and target rocks can be exemplified by Kara and Popigai and other astroblemes. To simplify the classification of the rock, its main and more stable components (matrix, glass, clasts) should be considered. More detailed analysis of the suevite components can be used for sub-classifications, similarly as it is done for other Earth rocks. In addition, a short description of suevites from various astroblemes is presented. The possibility of the monomict suevite breccia creation is discussed.

Opis:
In situ measurements of physical and biogeochemical variables were conducted along a transect in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Qatar during late summer (September 2014) and winter (January 2015) to investigate their vertical, spatial and temporal variability. The study reveals that the water column is characterized by strong stratification during late summer in the deepest station, where the water depth is around 65 m and the surface to bottom temperature variation is around 9.1°C. The water column is vertically homogeneous during winter due to surface cooling and wind mixing. The surface to 23 m water column is characterized by ample dissolved oxygen (DO) during late summer and winter in the offshore regions, however, relatively low DO is found during late summer due to weak mixing and advection under weak winds and currents. Dissolved oxygen drops to hypoxic levels below the summer thermocline, and the winter high DO layer extends up to the bottom. Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) is relatively high during late summer in the offshore region, while that in the nearshore regions is very low, which is linked to the anthropogenic stresses from the central east coast of Qatar. The results identified in this study fill an essential gap in the knowledge of regional primary production dynamics.

ObjectivesA method of continuous heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) recording was used for the evaluation of the cardiovascular system parameters in participants of short-term (<1 month) high-latitude expeditions, in comparison with the parameters of residents of Central Russia and the Arctic region.Material and MethodsA dynamic examination of participants of Arctic expeditions (30 men, residents of middle-latitude regions, aged 46.7±1.7 years), workers permanently living in Central Russia (the Moscow region, 44 men, aged 46.7±1.0 years) and residents of the North (the Murmansk region, 35 men, aged 46.6±1.3 years) was performed. The authors used a spiroartheriocardiorythmograph allowing the parallel recording of HR, BP, spectral characteristics of HR variability (HRV) and the variability of systolic BP (sBP) and diastolic BP (dBP), cardiac performance parameters, and spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (BRS). The parameters were recorded at rest, in a sitting position, over 2 min.ResultsThe basic clinical parameters (HR, BP and cardiac performance) did not differ in the workers living in different climatic zones. However, the residents of the North demonstrated a lower total power (TP) of the dBP variability spectrum and a lower relative power of the high-frequency (HF) range in both the sBP and dBP variability spectra. The participants of expeditions to the North had a lower TP of the HRV spectrum (in comparison with both control groups) that did not change during the expeditions; BRS was reduced, while the TP of the sBP spectrum was increased in comparison with the corresponding parameters obtained from the residents of circumpolar regions, and decreased during the expedition in parallel with a decrease in the sBP values. The TP of both the sBP and dBP variability spectra, as well as the power of the HF range in these spectra, were similar in the participants of expeditions to those obtained from the residents of Central Russia, and they considerably surpassed the corresponding parameters in the northerners surveyed.ConclusionsThe revealed peculiarities of the cardiovascular system in the participants of high-latitude expeditions can be considered as correlates of positive, and adequate in terms of the physiological value, adaptive shifts in the autonomous regulation of the cardiovascular system.

Opis:
It is well known that one of the factors that influence the indoor radon variability is the floor level of the buildings. Considering the fact that the main source of indoor radon is radon in soil gas, it is expected that the radon concentration decreases at higher floors. Thus at higher floors the dominant source of radon is originating from building materials, and in some cases there may be deviations from the generally established regularity. In such sense, we chose one freestanding single-family house with loft and other 16-floor high-rise residential building for this study. The indoor radon measurements were performed by two methods: passive and active. We used passive devices based on track-etched detectors: Radtrak2 Radonova. For the short-term indoor radon measurements, we used two active devices: SN1029 and SN1030 (manufactured by Sun Nuclear Corporation). The first device was fixed in the living room at the ground level and the second was moved through the floors of the residential building. Every measuring cycle at the specified floor lasted seven days with the sampling time of 2 h. The results show two different indoor radon behaviours regarding radon variability due to floor level. In the single-family house with loft we registered intense difference between radon concentration in the ground level and loft, while in the high-rise residential building the radon level was almost the same at all floors, and hence we may conclude that radon originated mainly from building materials.

genetic variability
Opis:
Common whitefish (Coregonus maraena) in Poland belongs to the endangered species. The degradation of the environment causes common whitefish to lose its natural reproduction sites. The natural genetic structure of whitefish has been compromised by anthropogenetic activities involving eutrophication, river regulation, the introduction of non-native species and as well as excessive exploitation of the species. The genetic variability of common whitefish (Coregonus maraena) from 2 sites: Pomeranian Bay and the lower Oder river, was assessed using microsatellite markers. A total of 45 caught individuals were analysed (26 from Pomeranian Bay and 19 from the Oder river). Polymorphism at nine loci, Str60INRA, Str73INRA, Strutta 12, OmyFgt1TUF, Str85INRA, Str591INRA, Ssa85, Ssa197, T3-13 was assessed. The results indicated that all the investigated populations showed a high level of genetic variability. The level of genetic variability was determined using the FST parameter and was high investigated populations (0.215). Microsatellite analysis demonstrated a higher observed heterozygosity as compared with the expected heterozygosity in all the investigated populations. The FIS coefficient values below zero in all the investigated populations of common whitefish indicate the excess of heterozygotes. The high number of heterozygotes may be related with a more intense influx of genes from outside of the local population. The study demonstrated that microsatellite markers (SSR) are very useful in the assessment of the genetic variability of common whitefish (Coregonus maraena). Our results characterize the selected populations of whitefish and may be useful for further research on this endangered species.
W sumie analizowano 45 pozyskanych osobników (26 z Zatoki Pomorskiej i 19 z Dolnej Odry). W pracy oceniano polimorfizm dziewięciu loci: Str60INRA, Str73INRA, Strutta 12 OmyFgt1TUF, Str85INRA, Str591INRA, Ssa85, Ssa197, T3-13.

The phenomenon of erosion on mountain and submontane areas influences directly on high variability of soil properties. In the work there were presented results of analysis of spatial variability of bulk density, total porosity, organic matter content and saturated hydraulic conductivity, on eroded slopes of the Kasińczanka stream basin. Geostatistical analysis was carried out using the kriging method, based on irregular network, consisted of 52 points, situated by means of the GPS. Taking into account the calculated variability coefficient it was stated, that on the investigated area, the most flexible spatially was saturated hydraulic conductivity, while the less flexible turned out total porosity. Using the determined models of semivariance, the maps of spatial variability of chosen parameters were drafted. It was stated that high value of variance influenced on higher smoothing of spatial distribution in interpolation. Results of geostatistical analysis will allow to find locations for new measuring points, what has substantial significance in mountain areas, for precision analysis of soil properties. Based on the obtained results, it can be stated that the kriging method may be useful tool for determination spatial variability analysis of soil properties on an areas of mountain basins.

The paper presents the results of a study on differentiation of the morphological structure of soil and selected physical and chemical properties of soils in toposequence of the Opalenica Plain. The study was conducted in a 1200 m long transect running through a typical soil toposequence for the Polish Lowland, and therefore the results presented in this study can be extrapolated to similar geomorphological conditions of the area. On the basis of pedological cross-section, the following soil units were distinguished: PWspgl – Albic Luvisols (Arenic) with glossic properties, PAt – Albic Glossic Retisols (Loamic), PAsp – Albic Glossic Retisols (Aric, Arenic), PAspgg – Albic Glossic Retisols (Aric, Arenic, Oxyaquic), PWsggl – Albic Luvisols (Aric, Arenic, Stagnic) with glossic properties, PWgggl – Albic Luvisols (Aric, Loamic, Stagnic) with glossic properties, CZgg – Mollic Reductigleyic Eutric Gleysols (Aric, Loamic), CFt – Fluvic Phaeozems (Aric, Arenic). Each of these units has its own specific position in toposequence but the occurrence of Fluvic Phaeozems (Aric, Arenic) are associated with geogenetic processes of Mogilnica river. In this work, using a multiple regression analysis a statistically significant relationships between the position of the soils in relief and the terrain slopes and the organic carbon content in Ap horizon, the cation exchangeable capacity, the sum of exchangeable bases and the pH were obtained. Systematic variability of most soil properties of Ap horizon have shown two distances of spatial variation. The first concerns the systematic changes in shorter distance (from 132 to 344 m) and can be associated with differences in soil properties between separate soil units. The second distance of spatial correlation ranges from 431 m to 792 m, which testify to the fact that quantitative changes in the properties of soils are realized gradually and distinctly, together with the differentiation of the slope, over several separate cartographic units.

Opis:
Pollen morphology and pollen variability of Rubus gracilis were studied. A total of 260 grains from 13 natural Polish localities were examined. Important characteristics include: a stretched bridge; a visible pore area and endopores; ectocolpi arranged regularly, more or less evenly spaced or, more rarely, joining one another in the apocolpium, long (79.3% length of the polar axis) and narrow; exine sculpture striate, distinct; striae and muri of equal width, rather narrow; striae usually running parallel to the polar axis, sometimes forming semicircles in the apocolpium zone; with distinct perforations. The size, outline and shape turned out to be poor criteria when identifying the species. A statistical analysis of 10 quantitative grain characteristics showed their little variability. The highest variability was found to occur in two traits connected with d (the distance between the apices of two ectocolpi). Statistical studies revealed no differences among the grains from the individual localities, likely the result of apomixis.

Highly scattered results of the content of total phosphorus in potato tubers and starch were found. The main source of the variation in starch phosphorus content was the potato variety character. The percentage of this source of variation in the total variation of starch phosphorus content was 78%. On the other hand, the total phosphorus content in potato tuber was determined by the environmental conditions. The percentage of variation from the interaction of years and locations in the total variation of tuber content of phosphorus was 84%.
Badano bulwy 10 odmian skrobiowych ziemniaka pochodzących z doświadczeń oceny odmian, uprawianych w ciągu 3 lat, w 3 stacjach doświadczalnych różniących się znacznie warunkami glebowo-klimatycznymi. W materiale doświadczalnym oznaczono zawartość fosforu całkowitego w bulwach ziemniaka i w skrobi. 1). Średnie wartości dla poszczególnych odmian były mało zróżnicowane w przypadku zawartości fosforu całkowitego w bulwach: 2,42-3,01 g/kg s.m. i znacznie zróżnicowane dla zawartości fosforu w skrobi: 0,54-1,22 g/kg s.m. skrobi (tab. 1).

A rich (about 60 specimens) collection of Schlotheimophyllum, large rugose corals from the Silurian of Gotland, Sweden, was studied. Although the material is mostly fragmentary (beach pebbles), the presence of growth lines, clearly seen in thin sections, provides reliable numerical data. Analyzed were corallum shape, septal numbers, and aspects of coloniality. Uniformity of variability spectra of these parameters indicates that all of the material studied belongs to a single, variable species, which is Schlotheimophyllum patellatum (Schlotheim, 1820).

The design process in geotechnical engineering requires the most accurate mapping of soil. The difficulty lies in the spatial variability of soil parameters, which has been a site of investigation of many researches for many years. This study analyses the soilmodeling problem by suggesting two effective methods of acquiring information for modeling that consists of variability from cone penetration test (CPT). The first method has been used in geotechnical engineering, but the second one has not been associated with geotechnics so far. Both methods are applied to a case study in which the parameters of changes are estimated. The knowledge of the variability of parameters allows in a long term more effective estimation, for example, bearing capacity probability of failure.

Pollen grains of 15 species of the genus Sansevieria were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The pollen grains were single, but dyads were also found. The basic shape of the pollen grains (with chemical treatment) was subprolate, prolate and prolate-spheroidal and the pollen grains were large (> 50 mm). The pollen grains observed in SEM were prolate-spheroidal, subprolate, prolate and perprolate. The aperture occupied nearly the entire distal hemisphere. The surface of non-apertural areas was microreticulate, psilate–perforate, fossulate and verrucate. The surface of the apertural area was psilate-perforate-verrucate, microreticulate-verrucategemmate and psilate-perforate. The tectum was homogeneous, with perforations. Our results suggest that some species cannot be separated based on pollen grain morphology, but only may be categorized into their groups. The present study investigated pollen grain morphology in eleven species for the first time in terms of pollen micromorphology and provided some important new data.

Uniforming sugarcane management without any knowledge of soil variability could result in some parts of a sugarcane field receiving insufficient inputs, while other parts receive an excessive input. The research aimed at assessing the soil variability and sugarcane biomass along Ultisol toposequences in Central Lampung, Indonesia. Two sugarcane catenas and one forest catena were fully described in the fields. Soil horizons are represented by Ap/Ah/M, E, B, Cc and Cg with dominant clay translocation. The gleying symptom was found only in the lower slope to depression. The concretion depths can be used as an erosion indicator if the soil parent material is well characterized. Soil P has a maximum value of Ap horizon and decreases with the depth and no effect of internal erosion in the form of soil P accumulation in subsoils can be observed, except for the colluviated horizon. Kaolinite clay is dominantly found to buffer the changes in pH, except Ap horizon of sugarcane. The organic C depends on the pedogenesis and catena form. Al saturation indicates that the dominant soil weathering is intensive. Al saturation in the Ap horizon (Catena G1; G2) was reduced from 80% to 20–40% caused by liming and fertilization. The catena position was the main factor causing the increasing soil variability, which was responsible for the variability of sugarcane biomass. The sugarcane biomass increased with decreasing slopes. The highest biomass was found in the depression (105 tones/ha) if the sedimentation process is characterized by the formation horizon M and accompanied by the nutrient accumulation from the hilltops.

Opis:
Currently two morphological species of the genus Fomes (Polyporaceae, Basidiomycota) are known: F. fomentarius (L.) Fr. and F. fasciatus (Sw.) Cooke. Both species are very important in the decomposition of wood and in the nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. Moreover, F. fomentariusis also known as a source of medicinal and nutraceutical products. Recently the existence of three separate ITS lineages/sublineages among F. fomentarius strains has been clearly established - A1 (the strains isolated from North America), A2 (only from Europe) and B (from Europe and Asia). In this review the current knowledge of the morphological variability of F. fomentarius basidiomata has been summarized in respect of the reliable separation of its lineages/sublineages. Micro- and macrofeatures and geographic variability of the basidiomata have been described. Morphological traits of the F. fomentarius basidiomata can vary due to geographical distribution. These phenotypic differences can be based on the presence of several groups or interactions between the genotype and environment. However, no clear differences between basidiomata, useful for reliable separation of the lineages/sublineages, have been observed so far. A recent description in North American Fomes research articles is based on basidiomata of the A1 sublineage. It is most possible that the descriptions in European literature are based on basidiomata of two other lineages/sublineages and thus we cannot discriminate between them. In the future a detailed study of the macro- and microtraits - pileus and pore surface colors, basidioma size, depth of tube layer, and basidiospore size - is therefore proposed for reliable separation of the lineages/sublineages of F. fomentarius.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to induce somaclonal variability in the callus culture of L. hirsutum f. typicum and L. chilense and to characterize them in respect to tolerance to salinity. Callus was initiated on the cotyledon fragments grown on the medium supplemented with NAA and BAP. The tolerance of callus to salt was tested on MS media containing NaCl in concentration 25, 50, 75, 100, 200 mM. Callus tolerant to 100 mM NaCl was next regenerated by ten weeks on the media with different doses of growth regulators. After this time genetic differences between selected fragments and control (MS medium containing no growth regulators) were determining using ISSR-PCR method. The results show that NaCl concentration significantly affects the regeneration of callus in L. hirsutum f. typicum and L. chilense. The dose 200 mM NaCl of the medium results, in both species, in callus dying. Comparing the genetic similarity of examined callus samples with the control ones in both species, it may be stated that the differences in their response to NaCl and applied growth regulators were generally in the range 2–30%.

Opis:
The paper studies the morphological variability of the service tree populations in the continental and Mediterranean regions of Croatia. The inter- and intra-population variability, as well as eco-geographic population differentiation, was established on the basis of eight measured morphological characteristics of two types of leaflets (lateral and terminal) and two derived ratios, using descriptive and multivariate statistical methods. The conducted research established a high variability of morphological characteristics. In comparison with lateral leaflets, terminal leaflets showed a higher degree of variability for the majority of the studied variables. The differences between the trees within populations, as well as the differences between populations, were confirmed for all studied characteristics. The study also confirmed a trend of population variations according to the eco-geographic principle. Populations from climatically different and geographically distant habitats, in other words from the Mediterranean and the continental region, differed in the majority of studied characteristics. In addition to the established pattern of ecotypical variability between the continental and the Mediterranean regions, the clinal variability with regard to altitude and mean annual temperature was also confirmed. Small, although statistically significant clinal variability with regard to the longitude was recorded for two measured characteristics. The conducted study provided insights into the variability of the service tree populations in Croatia, which is a basis for further research that should be implemented in order to produce guidelines for the breeding and conservation of genetic resources of this rare and endangered noble hardwood species.

A three-dimensional baroclinic σ–coordinate model was applied to study the circulation and thermohaline variability in the coastal zone in the south-eastern Baltic Sea. The model is based on the Princeton Ocean Model code of Blumberg & Mellor (1987), known as POM, and has the horizontal resolution of ∼5 km and 24 σ-levels in the vertical. The hydrodynamic conditions and variability of water and salt exchange between the Gulf of Gdańsk and the Baltic Proper, and the renewal of water masses in the Gulf of Gdańsk due to atmospheric forcing are analyzed. The numerical simulations were performed with real atmospheric forcings as well as with homogeneous (spatially uniform) wind fields over the whole Baltic Sea. The numerical simulations showed that the atmospheric forcing (winds) can play a significant role in shaping the renewal of bottom saline waters in the Gulf of Gdańsk. Two regions of inflow/outflow of saline waters responsible for the salinity regime were located. The overall water exchange between the Gulf and the Baltic Proper as well as the exchange of saline bottom waters appear to be strongly dependent on wind conditions. The net flux of water of salinity >9 PSU is of the order of 48 000–100000 m3 s−1. SE, E, S and NE winds were found to exert the greatest influence on salinity conditions in the Gulf of Gdańsk. Estimates of saline (salinity >9 PSU) water residence time based on the model simulation yielded values from 46 days for SE winds to 153 days for NW winds.

The combined effect of climate change and steadily increasing seawater demand for industrial and domestic purposes in the Arabian Gulf region has a significant impact on the ecosystem in this region. Additionally, this effect may reduce the efficiency and increase the operating costs of industrial facilities that utilize seawater for cooling and other purposes. In this context, it is important to know various statistical characteristics of the sea surface temperature (SST) and their trends, in addition to the mean climatological characteristics. The analysis conducted in this study utilized a 17-year Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature Level 4 dataset of 0.01 × 0.01° spatial resolution. First, the dataset was compared against a 2-year seawater temperature measurements at the ten offshore buoys in the relatively shallow coastal waters of the United Arab Emirates between Ras Ghumais and Dubai, which showed a reasonably good agreement between the two datasets, with the estimated root mean square deviations ranging from 0.5 to 0.9°C. Subsequently, several statistical SST characteristics were calculated. The trend analysis showed not only positive tendencies in the mean SSTs of up to 0.08°C/year in the northern Gulf, but also the trends in the annual percentile exceedances, particularly the 95th percentiles (near-maximum SSTs), which increased by approximately 0.07°C/year in the western United Arab Emirates and eastern Qatar waters. On the contrary, the 5th percentiles (near-minimum SSTs) decreased by up to 0.1°C/year, especially in the waters around Bahrain, Qatar, and the western United Arab Emirates. These results indicate that extreme hot and cold SST events in the Gulf are becoming more frequent and more extreme than before.

Regularity in the emotional functioning of a human in specific time can be determined by cycles characterised by and social changes. The objective of the research was to establish whether the population subjected to the research-related tests experienced daily and weekly mood variability and, if this relation has been confirmed, describe the latter. Mood was tested by means of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Watson, Clark & Tellegen, 1988). Subjects judged their mood by means of two indicators (PA and NA) for one week, on a daily basis, and at 3-hour intervals. Daily and weekly variability was assessed by comparing averaged results obtained from all measurements carried out at specific times of the day and days of the week. The assessment of internal group differences was performed with repeated measures analysis of variance. The result obtained in the tests indicated the existence of daily differences of positive affect as well as weekly differences in relation to positive and negative affect.

Rainfall is of primary importance to both the physical and cultural landscape of any region. The objective of this study is to find the trends for rainfall variability on climate change in Batticaloa District of Sri Lanka, by analyzing 146 years of monthly data of rainfall received during the period 1869-2014 from the meteorological station of the Department of Meteorology. Some studies attribute extreme events to rainfall variability due to climate change induced by global warming. However, there is a dearth of climatological studies addressing the trends in rainfall over Sri Lanka in support of such attribution. In our study, statistical analysis such as linear and standard deviation for 3 year, 5 year, 11 year and 21 year periods were utilized to examine periodic rainfall changes in both annual and seasonal contexts. The study finds that the 3, 5 year moving average shows high drier seasons, but the 11, 21 years moving average show higher wet seasons during the period of study. The changes of rainfall are known to have led to disasters such as flood and drought. Annual rainfall varies from 864 mm to 3081 mm, the distribution of which has sight variation throughout the district.

Opis:
Climate change has become a major concern to human society because of its potentially deleterious impact worldwide. The degree to which rainfall amounts vary across an area or through time is an important characteristic of the climate of an area. This subject area in meteorology is called "rainfall variability”. Changes in amount, intensity and frequency affect the environment and society. The annual rainfall varies from 864 mm to 3081 mm (146 years data) distribution, which has sight variation throughout the district. The study purposes to examine the relationship between rainfall and paddy production. Samplings from 100 households have been gathered by questionnaire survey as primary data and the secondary data has been collected Meteorological Department, Department of Agriculture and published research reports. 146 years rainfall data and 34 years paddy cultivation data has been utilized to analyse the result. Accurate statistical methods have been used to find the variability that includes correlation and trend analysis of 3, 5 years moving average of standard deviation. As the result, the study finds that through the 3, 5 years moving average had shown high drier seasons of the years. The paddy production was very high in Maha season but this was very low in Yala season because of the rainfall variability. By the correlation between rainfall and paddy production, the significant value is positive in Maha season and this is negative in Yala season. However, both are having the different significance each other. Thus, even the rainfall was highly influenced to the higher production, this is impossible in each time. Therefore, the development of irrigation tanks and channels, rainwater harvesting and proper management would be supported to more production in Yala season.

Climate affects crop production decisions and outcomes in agriculture. From very short-term decisions about which crops to grow, when to plant or harvest a field, to longer-term decisions about farm investments, climate can positively or negatively affect agricultural systems. Although the general effects of climate change on agriculture are broadly understood, there are limited studies that model the relationship between specific crops and climate variables. The study uses the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model to analyze the sensitivity of maize yield to climate variables, fertilizer use and other non-climate variables. This paper uses annual time-series data of 47 observations spanning from 1970 to 2016. The results reveal that rainfall and temperature are important maize yield drivers in South Africa. However, if excessive, they will produce negative effects. The findings of this analysis are relevant for designing long-term interventions to mitigate the effects of climate change on maize production.

Opis:
This study was carried out with the objective to estimate the genotypic variability and other yield related traits of Ethiopian mustard in North West Ethiopia. A total of 36 genotypes of Ethiopian mustard were considered for this study. Analysis of variance was computed to contrast the variability within the collected genotypes based on yield and other yield related traits. The results revealed highly significant values(p<0.01) for days to maturity, grain filling period, number of pod per plot, secondary branches per plant, harvest index, seed yield per plot, seed yield per hectare and oil content. Significant differences (p<0.05) were noted for days to flowering, plant height, primary branch per plant, biomass per plot, oil yield per plot differences among the genotypes. Genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV %) was lower than phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV %) for all the traits studied. High genetic advance with heritability was observed in the following characters; plant height, biomass of the plant, number of secondary branch per plant and grain filling period. There are variations in the extent of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance of traits which can facilitate selection for further improvement of important traits of Ethiopian mustard. Therefore, it can be concluded that the variability within Ethiopian mustard genotypes collected from different areas of northern Ethiopia is high and vital for better crop improvement.

While hearing protection devices (HPD) have been the last and often only line of defense against noiseinduced hearing loss in the workplace, their performance has been suspect. Laboratory evaluations have not proven to predict the actual performance of HPD in the field. Individual fit testing of HPD will allow the determination of HPD performance on individual workers, and this will improve the ability to select HPD appropriate for given noise exposures and intervene with workers to ensure sufficiency in HPD performance. A modified microphone-in-real-ear (F-MIRE) has been adapted to test a variety of HPD quickly and reliably in situ. A dual-element microphone and software combination permits reliable noise reduction measurements. Statistically developed compensation factors permit direct comparison of F-MIRE predicted personal attenuation ratings to traditional laboratory measures of HPD performance using real-ear-attenuation-at-threshold assessments.

The analysis of variance showed highly significant differences (p < 0.01) for days to flowering, days to maturity, hundred seed weight, plant height and panicle length and differed significantly (p < 0.05) for fertile tiller per plant, filled grains per panicle, unfilled grains per panicle ,biomass yield and grain yield per plot except harvest index, indicating the existence of variability. The higher phenotypic and genotypic variance were obtained from number of filled grains, plant height, days for 50% heading, days for 85% maturity and biomass yield indicating high influence of the environment on the traits. The high level of genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation was recorded for traits like biomass yield, grain yield, number of fertile tillers per plant and unfilled grains per panicle. Heritability estimates were moderately high for days to maturity (66.01%), and thousand-grain weight (66.80%). High genetic advance as percent of means was observed for biomass yield per plot, unfilled grains per panicle, grain yield per plot, and fertile tiller per plant. Thousand-grain weight showed moderately high heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean. Therefore, selection based on this character might be effective for increasing grain yield.

In connection with IPGR participation in various national and international projects during the recent years, investigations have been conducted, in order to create a database of available old plant materials of grain legumes of Bulgarian origin. Different areas throughout Bulgaria with diverse relief, soil and climatic conditions have been visited. From the literature review and collected from previous studies data we identified the specific areas these crops occupy traditionally in the home garden and are sentimentally linked to family traditions. Questionnaires were developed, which intended to complement and update the existing information about location, farmer’s name, number cultivated species, usage, cooking recipes and storage. In this respect, numerous interviews with local people were conducted and were visited community centers, museums, schools and other organizations and institutions.

Two statistical methods, fractal geometry and geometric morphometrics, are tested for their applicability to ostracod systematics. For this comparison, two morphologically similar ostracod species (Krithe compressa and Krithe iniqua) whose genus−level systematics is still incompletely resolved, are selected. Twenty−nine right valves of each species were collected from the upper Pliocene samples at the Monte San Nicola section in southern Italy. Statistical analyses (MANOVA on morphometric shape variables, and D values) were utilized to test if geometric morphometrics and fractal analysis are appropriate into discriminating between the two species. Both methods succeeded in distinguishing the species statistically. The fractal analysis of the two ostracod species shows D values centered on 1.31±0.02 for Krithe iniqua and on 1.40±0.02 for Krithe compressa. Geometric morphometric analysis indicates significant differences between the two species and allows studying intra−populational variability as well as. The most variable traits indicated by geometric morphometrics are vestibular area and posterior outline of the shell, indicating that these traits are the most relevant for the systematics of the species analyzed. Both fractal geometry and geometric morphometrics provide a measure of population variability. Fractal analysis has the advantage of being free from any subjectivity in the selection of characters and could be most appropriate to use for analysis of complex ornamentation for systematic purposes. However, a possible advantage of geometric morphometrics over fractal analysis is its ability to indicate where statistically significant variations in shape occur on the shell.

Acoustic information, collected in the form of calibrated measurements of integrated echo energies, has been applied at the Sea Fisheries Institute since 1981 to examine the relationships between clupeoids distribution in the Baltic and the relevant environmental factors. Data were collected during different seasons for each elementary distance unit (EDSU) at standardised depth intervals and compared to the values of selected environmental parameters measured in parallel. Acoustic, biological and hydrological data were correlated temporally and spatially, then transferred to a comprehensive database, thereby enabling the 4D analysis of the factors characterising a wide range of fish behaviour. Selected characteristics describe the variability of environmental factors during the short- and long-term life cycles of clupeoids. Apart from the analysis of abiotic factors, specially prepared cross-sections of the herring in different stages of gonad maturity are presented. The aspects of variability have been described for their inclusion in the measuring and modelling herring and sprat target strength, particularly under the specific circumstances of the Baltic Sea.

Characteristics of the epidermis are of particular taxonomic as well as phylogenetic interest because they differ conspicuously between species. The differences are especially prominent in the size and shape of epidermal cells, the shape of cell walls, peristomatal cuticular rim, the distribution and position of stomata, lithocysts, hydathodes, trichomes, and the types of wax, cuticle and trichomes. Results of this study provided data on new qualitative and quantitative traits of the leaf epidermis in the selected taxa, and confirmed the classification suggested by Berg (1989).

The paper presents an analysis of wheat yields variability in the voivodeships of Poland. The main aim of the study was to find out what are the statistical relationships between the wheat yield variability and the following factors: arable area, size of wheat production area, share of arable land used for wheat production, land quality and average yield. For that purpose a multiple linear regression was applied. It was found out that the detected spatial autocorrelation of wheat yields variability measured by standard deviations can be explained in 75% by the fitted model. Two of the considered variables showed a significant negative effect on this variability: the logarithm of arable area and the land quality, while the other two: the average wheat yield and the wheat production area displayed a significant positive effect on the variability. The effect of share of arable land used for wheat production itself was not significant.

Opis:
Numerous ecological problems of continental shelf ecosystems require a refined knowledge of the evolution of suspended sediment concentrations (SSC). The present investigation focuses on the spatial and temporal variabilities of near-surface SSC in coastal waters of the English Channel (western Europe) by exploiting numerical predictions from the Regional Ocean Modeling System ROMS. Extending previous investigations of ROMS performances in the Channel, this analysis refines, with increased spatial and temporal resolutions, the characterization of near-surface SSC patterns revealing areas where concentrations are highly correlated with evolutions of tides and waves. Significant tidal modulations of near-surface concentrations are thus found in the eastern English Channel and the French Dover Strait while a pronounced influence of waves is exhibited in the Channel Islands Gulf. Coastal waters present furthermore strong SSC temporal variations, particularly noticeable during storm events of autumn and winter, with maximum near-surface concentrations exceeding 40 mg l1 and increase by a factor from 10 to 18 in comparison with time-averaged concentrations. This temporal variability strongly depends on the granulometric distribution of suspended sediments characterized by local bimodal contributions of silts and sands off coastal irregularities of the Isle of Wight, the Cotentin Peninsula and the southern Dover Strait.

Opis:
The aim of the study was an ex situ evaluation of morphological and chemical variability within the population of common avens. Plant height, number of shoots, stage of generative development (number of flower buds, flowers, and fruits), as well as weight of herb and underground organs were determined. In the raw materials total content of tannins and content of particular phenolic compounds identified by HPLC was determined. In underground organs also content of eugenol – the dominant constituent of essential oil was assessed. High diversity of morphological traits (especially weight of herb and underground organs) and the content of determined compounds (especially in herb) was found. Above- and underground organs differed in the composition and content of phenolic compounds. Underground organs were characterised by higher content of flavan-3-ols, but they did not contain chlorogenic acid, which was the dominant phenolic compound in herb.
Określono wysokość roślin, liczbę pędów kwiatowych, stopień rozwoju generatywnego (liczbę pąków kwiatowych, kwiatów i owoców) oraz masę ziela i organów podziemnych.

Opis:
Vibrations of wind turbines strongly depends on the wind. For the purpose of wind turbines condition monitoring it is very important to understand the nature of the wind, especially its time variability. The paper investigates fundamental statistics of the wind and vibrations for four wind turbines in two wind farms. Seasonal and diurnal variations are presented and discussed. For both vibration and wind speed seasonal trends are clearly visible, particularly for mean values, but also for standard deviation. Variability of vibration and wind are compared using mean/std ratio. The results can be helpful to determine operational states of wind turbines. It can also help achieve comparable results of technical state assessment for different machines located in different locations.

In this study perceived mental stress during occupational work was compared to heart rate variability (HRV) using a traditional questionnaire and a novel wristop heart rate monitor with related software. The aim was to find HRV parameters useful for mental stress detection. We found the highest correlation between perceived mental stress with the differences between the values of triangular interpolation of rythm-to-rythm (RR) interval histogram (TINN) and the root mean square of differences of successive RR intervals (RMSSD) obtained in the morning and during the workday (r = –.73 and r = –.60, respectively). The analysis shows that as the RMSSD and TINN value differences increase from night to morning, the stress decreases.

The essential purpose of this contribution is to highlight the values of the copula of the Spanish verbs ser and estar opposit to the French être, and at the same time, to propose some didactic solutions to solve errors made by French speaking students who study the Spanish as L2. Following this concern attached to the teaching / learning of foreign languages, the study raises the problem of the versatility of the verbs ser and estar opposit to être whose ambivalent character also entails a process of linguistic interference that hinders the assimilation of the values of these copula of the Spanish verbs and their correct use by foreigners learners. At the methodological level, the study is based on several exercises of translation, the direct consultation of some native informants whose mother tongue is the Spanish, together with several grammar manual of reference on this topic. Thus, taking advantage of a broad corpus compiled through these resources, the values and the fonctions of these verbal elements are explained to boost their learning and correct use following some didactic guidelines based on notional, aspectual and comparative analysis.

Stem canker and black scurf of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn are important and epidemic diseases in potato-growing regions worldwide, including Iran. In this study, 120 isolates were retrieved from infected stem canker from six potato-growing regions in Iran (Isfahan, Ardebil, Fars, Hamedan, Kurdestan and Kerman). Out of these, 30 isolates were selected as representatives for genetic and virulence analysis. The isolates were analyzed by one sequence analyzes of the ITS-rDNA region, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR), as well as virulence studies. Based on sequence analysis of the ITS-rDNA region, all 30 isolates were assigned to the anastomosis group (AG) and all were assigned to AG-3 PT. Cluster analysis using the unweighted pair group method with the arithmetic averages (UPGMA) method for both RAPD and ISSR markers revealed that they were divided into three main groups, with no correlation to geographical regions of the isolates. Pathogenicity tests showed that all isolates were pathogenic on potato cv. Agria; however, virulence variability was observed among the isolates. The grouping based on RAPD analysis and virulence variability was not correlated.

This study is devoted to the problem of the appearance of variants in the translation of the text of the Holy Scriptures on the example of the analysis of Ps. 2:12. The aim of the study is to find out the reason for the occurrence of discrepancies in the translation of this psalm. The significance of the work lies in identifying the genesis of modern Russian translations of Ps. 2:12, as well as the reasons for linguistic difficulties that arise when translating the Hebrew and Greek Psalms into other languages. The results of the research may be used when translating and commenting on the studied text. The main conclusion is that the reason for the appearance of a “dark” place for the modern reader in the second psalm – “Accept the punishment, may the Lord not be angry” – stems from the polysemy of the Greek word “παιδείας”, which can be translated as “education, training, culture’ as well as “youth”. The Hebrew translators have interpreted this verse as “worship purely”, “worship with purity”, “arm yourself with purity”. Some of the translation options for this verse are based on the Septuagint, which gives a literal translation into Greekof the Hebrew text: “Accept / keep the lesson”. The variety of translation options for Ps.2:12results from the polysemy in the Hebrew language, superimposed on the borrowed meaningof the word “bar” from the Chaldean language and on the Greek ambiguity in the recipientlanguage; later on, the complexity of this verse increased even more due to the literalism of the Church Slavic translation. The value of this research lies in comparing the variants of the Russian translations of Ps. 2:12 and clarifying their history.

The creation of new perennial ryegrass varieties is impossible without instant access to wide range of natural variation i.e. to the ecotypes originating from different regions. The main goal of described experiment was to compare number of morphological, phenological and useful traits of European core collection of perennial ryegrass ecotypes in climatic conditions of Poland. Total number of 156 objects (incl. 4 standard varieties) originated from different regions of Europe were exposed to two management regimes (conservation and frequent cutting). During three subsequent years 22 qualitative and quantitative traits described variation of ‘main collection’. Further, on the basis of cluster analysis ‘sub-collection’ of 28 ecotypes from 9 clusters was selected and evaluated for 71 traits in field in similar management regimes as ‘main collection’. On the basis of described ecotypes variation it was possible to indicate following regions of ecotype origin in Europe: South Europe, West Europe, North-Middle Europe and Romania and Hungary. None of tested ecotypes exposed better yield formation than control varieties, however few ecotypes appeared to have better particular traits (better winter performance, faster spring regrowth etc.). Traits associated with inflorescence morphology (distance between florets in spikelet and distance between spikelets in spike, length of spikelet) seems to be the most stable traits, as contrary to abundance of inflorescences, tendency to produce inflorescences in year of sowing and green matter yield of first cut. High differentiation of ecotypes examined indicate existence of many botanical varieties as well as ecotypes of transition nature.

Seed and seedling vigour is an aspect of seed quality which affects field establishment and performance. Low maize yields have been reported  to be affected by several factors in which poor quality seed with low seed and seedling vigour. Information is scarce on seed and seedling vigour in maize inbred lines developed for tropical environments. Fifteen genotypes of tropical maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines were evaluated to determine the level of differences in seed and seedling vigour traits, and extent of relationships among traits and their heritability. A substantial amount of genetic variability was found, which suggested that most of the traits under study could be improved through selection and utilized in breeding programs. Positive and signifi- cant interrelationship  among  seed germination  and seedling  traits  and  a positive  correlation  between  seed germination and seed vigour and field emergence showed that these could be given due consideration in crop improvement for seed and seedling vigour. High genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance were obtained for seed germination, seed emergence, shoot length and seedling vigour index I and II, revealing the possibility of improvement in these characters through direct selection. The principal component analysis (PCA) identified seed emergence, shoot length, seedling vigour index I and II and tetrazolium vigour as characters that contributed greatly to variation in seed vigour in the maize inbred lines. Cluster analysis partitioned the genotypes into two groups, with group I consisting of seven genotypes and group II comprised the other eight genotypes, which suggested that hybridization between the two groups could lead to high level of heterosis. Genotype V5  had superior seedling vigour traits compared to other genotypes. Seedling emer- gence, shoot length, seedling vigour index I, seedling vigour index II and tetrazolium vigour are effective characters for good seedling vigour traits in maize inbred lines investigated.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to verify whether simultaneous responses from the muscular and circulatory system occur in the driver's body under simulated conditions of a crash threat. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in a passenger car driving simulator. The crash was included in the driving test scenario developed in an urban setting. In the group of 22 young male subjects, two physiological signals - ECG and EMG were continuously recorded. The length of the RR interval in the ECG signal was assessed. A HRV analysis was performed in the time and frequency domains for 1-minute record segments at rest (seated position), during undisturbed driving as well as during and several minutes after the crash. For the left and right side muscles: m. trapezius (TR) and m. flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), the EMG signal amplitude was determined. The percentage of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) was compared during driving and during the crash. Results: As for the ECG signal, it was found that in most of the drivers changes occurred in the parameter values reflecting HRV in the time domain. Significant changes were noted in the mean length of RR intervals (mRR). As for the EMG signal, the changes in the amplitude concerned the signal recorded from the FDS muscle. The changes in ECG and EMG were simultaneous in half of the cases. Conclusion: Such parameters as mRR (ECG signal) and FDS-L amplitude (EMG signal) were the responses to accident risk. Under simulated conditions, responses from the circulatory and musculoskeletal systems are not always simultaneous. The results indicate that a more complete driver's response to a crash in road traffic is obtained based on parallel recording of two physiological signals (ECG and EMG).

This study investigates the lower Tigris basin’s the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) sensitivity in 2000–2016 to regional climate variability reflected by the monthly precipitation and temperature time series of seven global datasets as well as to four global circulation indices. To examine the effect of climate variability on the different ecosystems, the study area has been classified into 10 smaller natural and anthropogenic landscapes based on landforms and land cover patterns. The preliminary analysis showed that the maximum biological productivity reflected by the NDVI of March and April has the highest correlation (0.5–0.8) to the same cumulative amounts of October–March period total precipitation and January–March period mean temperatures according to all datasets. In addition, this article showed there is a correlation between landscapes’ NDVI and global modulation represented by the September–February state of El Nińo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) (0.55–0.70) and December state of the dipole mode index (DMI) (0.35–0.72). Morphological changes of the cerebellar lobules are found in many congenital and acquired diseases of the cerebellum, but the information on the normal structure of the cerebellar lobules do not take into account the peculiarities of individual anatomical variability, sex and age characteristics.Aim – to investigate anatomical variability and fractal dimension of the white matter of the human cerebellar hemispheres.Material and methods. The study involved 100 cerebella of people of both sexes, who died of causes unrelated to brain pathology (20–99 years old). Parasagittal sections of the cerebellar hemispheres were investigated.Results. On parasagittal sections number of main branches of white matter is very varied and depends on peculiarities of structure of the hemispheric lobules. It was found that there is individual variability of the structure of the human cerebellar hemispheres, namely white matter branching features. We described variants of the branching of the main branches of white matter of the human cerebellar hemispheres.Fractal dimension of the white matter was determined. The white matter of the cerebellum is typical quasi-fractal structure that can be objectively described using fractal dimension. Fractal index of the white matter of the cerebellar hemispheres varies from 1.119 to 1.519; average fractal index is 1.370. Fractal analysis can be used as an objective morphometric criterion for the diagnosis of various diseases of the cerebellum and other structures of the central nervous system.Conclusions. Described variants of the cerebellar lobules and fractal dimension can be used as criteria for modern diagnostic imaging techniques for the diagnosis of various diseases of the CNS. The data can be used as the basis for atlases of serial sections of the cerebellum.

The text concerns liquidity understood as an extremely extensive category containing the aspect of changeability and blurring boundaries. It covers an extremely wide spectrum of phenomena. Liquidity is a physical category that refers to the element of water and the senses of touch and taste. It became extremely popular in sociology as an epistemological category thanks to Zygmunt Bauman. This category should be applied much more widely in analyzing phenomena in the field of literature, art, theater, performance, but also going beyond practical analytical use and transferring this concept to the level of theory. The term „liquid” refers to many associations, which in turn allow us to recall different orders and perspectives, at the same time incorporating the current argument into a broader discourse on the moving, fluid nature of the concepts of „wandering” between disciplines. These considerations are also part of the author’s concept of amorphous aesthetic categories, which include liquidity.

Introduction and objective. Aging is a process that also affects the autonomic nervous system (ANS) making it less adaptable to environmental and intrinsic stimuli and affecting its ability to maintain body homeostasis. The aim of this study was to estimate the resting ANS function using heart rate variability (HRV) method and by noradrenaline measurement in aging, 2–12-months-old rats. Materials and method. Resting 15-minute-long ECG recordings were performed in anaesthetized rats with a subsequent spectral HRV analysis. Basic non-normalized HRV components in the range of very low (VLF), low (LF) and high (HF) frequency, along with the total HRV spectrum power (TP) were estimated. Moreover, normalized LF (nLF) and normalized HF (nHF) were calculated. Blood samples were also collected to assay plasma noradrenaline (NA) level. Results. In the overall assessment, plasma noradrenaline level as well as both TP and all non-normalized HRV components demonstrated a tendency for reduction when compared the first (2nd) and last (12th) months. In the case of nLF and nHF, a trend of nLF predominance in the 2nd and 3rd month was revealed while an inverse relation was observed from the 6th month on, with nHF superiority. Overall, males reached comparable or slightly higher NA and non-normalized HRV values compared to females, although most differences were not statistically significant. A parallel decline of LF (starting from the 10th month) and HF (from the 6th month) was demonstrated in both male and female animals. Female rats had a little more stable nLF and nHF course in the study time. Conclusions. Rat ANS aging is associated with global HRV decrease with parallel plasma NA decline, although without selective impairment of individual (sympathetic/parasympathetic) ANS components.

Estimation of population abundance is one of the most difficult tasks in wildlife management. In case of forest−dwelling ungulates, none of the currently available survey methods is satisfying in terms of accuracy, precision, and cost−effectiveness. Therefore, we propose a new method of ungulate monitoring based on distance sampling and using unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with thermal infrared cameras. The method is potentially more reliable and cost−effective than conventional survey techniques. It also allows for aerial surveys in the dark when animals are most active. However, the method needs to be tested before wide−scale implementation in wildlife management practice. While the effects of sampling design and effort on accuracy and precision of abundance estimates are well recognized, the importance of population and habitat characteristics is often overlooked by wildlife managers. We used simulations to assess the effects of population size, animal aggregation, and habitat−depended detection probability on the accuracy and precision of wildlife aerial survey results. We created 1000 virtual populations defined by population density (2−22 individuals/100 ha), mean group size (1−6 individuals), and probability of animal detection during surveys (proportional to canopy cover, 30−60%). Animals were distributed on a virtual study area (5000 ha) according to randomly generated density distribution. Each population was subjected to 25 simulated surveys using the same design (39 transects grouped in three 2.0×2.5 km blocks). The transects covered 12% of the entire study area. We used conventional distance sampling to estimate abundance and generalized linear models to assess the effect of each parameter on the accuracy and precision of estimates. The estimation accuracy was mostly affected by the probability of detection (B=–0.75) and, to a lesser degree, by aggre− gation (B=–0.25) and population size (B=0.09). Precision was influenced by the aggregation (B=0.32) and population size (B=–0.26), while detection probability had a weaker effect (B=–0.11). Observed significant differences in quality of abundance estimates derived by the same survey design, but with differing population and habitat characteristics, indicate that each survey requires an individual approach. It is impossible to formulate general recommendations, e.g. concerning flight plan or area coverage. To achieve the required level of precision, while minimizing the survey costs, it is necessary to test alternative survey designs with the aid of computer simulations.

Due to recent climate changes and monsoon variability, the amount, pattern, and intensity of rainfall are significantly changing in many Asian countries. This paper attempts to study the annual and seasonal rainfall patterns and their variability, and the occurrence of droughts. Monthly rainfall data have been collected from the Department of Meteorology, Colombo, from 1871-2020 for Batticaloa station. The Standard Deviation, Coefficient of Variation least-square trend had computed for annual and seasonal rainfall to study the rainfall variability as whole and different epochs. To study the drought scenario Standardized Precipitation Index had computed, and then the drought was categorized based on the SPI criteria, and the drought severity had distinguished. Spatial rainfall distribution maps had prepared using Arc GIS 10.4 software. The Standard Deviation and the Coefficient of annual rainfall variation are 423.9 and 24.8%, respectively. The epochal variability results reveal that the variability of rainfall is higher in 1961-1990 (CV: 28.9%), which indicates the low dependability, while variability is lower in the epochs of 1931-1960 (CV: 17.7%) and 1871-1900 and (19.6%) respectively. The long-term rainfall trend (1871-2020) results reveal the increasing trend and its r2 = 0.0271. However, only the epoch 1961-1990 shows a downward trend with r2 = 0.2398. The rainfall anomaly results reveal the extreme drought had occurred in 1968 and 1889. The severe droughts had occurred in 1998, 1983, 1981, 1980, 1909, and 1890. Out of 150 years of data periods, 25 years had been identified as drought years. The probability of drought occurrence is P = 0.167. Terefore once in five to six years, drought could have occurred.

Opis:
In this paper, the long-term variability of global solar radiation in the agricultural area of Lower Silesia is analyzed based on a 56-year long (1961-2016) measurement series recorded at the Agro- and Hydro-meteorological Wrocław-Swojec Observatory (SW Poland). Yearly and monthly global radiation sums with their extreme and mean values were compared with radiation data from Warsaw (Central Poland) and Potsdam (East Germany). The dynamics of variability between consecutive months, seasons and years was also taken into account. The conducted positive trends show a significant increase in the investigated global radiation sums for Lower Silesia and also for Central Poland and the eastern part of Germany. The trends are strongly related to long-term macro-circulation changes in the North Hemisphere, particularly with the phases and sub-phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The relations between the investigated values of global solar radiation and these macro-circulation patterns are very complicated and they very often have an asynchronous character. The first, juvenile stage of the NAO positive phase (the 1970s and 1980s), when annual sums of global solar radiation in Wrocław-Swojec reached only the average level of about 3700 MJ·m-2 and warm half-year about 2800 MJ·m-2 respectively, was cloudy and rainy. This period was distinctly different than the advanced stage of one (the 1990’s and later years) with bigger sunshine duration and smaller annual precipitation, when the adequate radiation sums amount to 3 900-4000 MJ·m-2 and 3 000-3 100 MJ·m-2 respectively.

The problem of liquid wastes is still current not only in Poland, but also in the world. The primary source of liquid wastes are single-family and multi-family houses. To a lesser extent, public service or production facilities, mainly in urban areas, are equipped with no-outlet reservoirs. Low concentrations in liquid wastes and their high density are often some difficulty to work with not only by sewage treatment plants, but also collection points. Therefore, the knowledge of the composition of liquid wastes supplied to the collection points is important. The paper presents the results of research as well as variability of concentrations of selected parameters of liquid wastes supplied to the collection point in Bialystok, that accepts both municipal and industrial sewage. Statistical processing of the obtained results and those derived from The Waterworks Bialystok showed the presence of high variability of total suspended matter and electrolytic conductivity as well as organic impurities expressed as BOD5 and COD.

Otrzymane rezultaty badań laboratoryjnych opisują przebieg zmian lokalnych cech wytrzymałościowych Re i Rm wzdłuż osi badanych prętów, a także zmiany modułu sprężystości podłużnej E. Zestawione w referacie realizacje wskazują, że zmiany cech lokalnych dla prętów o długości fabrykacyjnej mają charakter oscylacji wokół wartości średnich. Model matematyczny opisujący tego typu zmienność stanowi szum losowy, czyli losowe wahania wokół wartości centralnej.
This paper presents the results of the experimental research on mechanical properties of selected aluminum alloys, representative of the heat treated alloys (6xxx series) and the strengthened one from cold working only alloys (5xxx series). Results of laboratory tests, which describe the local changes of the strength characteristics of Re, Rm and Young’s modulus E, indicate that variability in the local characteristics of the bars are oscillations around the average values along the axis of the bars. A mathematical model for describing this type of variation is random noise, or random fluctuations around a central value.

The work determines the range of variability in the price of turkey livestock and its relation to prices of chickens, pork and beef in 2006-2015. In 2006-2011, the variability coefficient for turkey livestock was 5 to 10%, whereas in 2012-2015 it dropped below 5%. The prices were most stable out of prices of chickens, pork or beef. The biggest influence on the variability of the turkey livestock price was the long-term trend and cyclic fluctuations (82% of the total variability on average). Seasonal fluctuations had lower amplitude (between 7 and 4%) than in the case of prices of pork and chickens, and their input in the total variability amounted to 14% on average. The price of turkey livestock presented the strongest correlation with the price of beef (r=0,851) and chickens (0,837), and was the least correlated with pork (0,681). In 2006-2015 the price of turkey livestock increased by 68%, beef by 57%, chickens by 29% and pork by 13%.

Opis:
This article presents the results of studies conducted on the variability of thermal and precipitation conditions in Poland in the second half of the 20th century, especially taking into consideration periods which were unfavorable for agricultural production. Averaged spatial temperatures and precipitation totals from consecutive years 1951 to 2000 were used. A significant increase in spring temperatures was noted, while the winters also became warmer. This had a significant effect upon the change of the thermal vegetation period's duration. No changing trends were noted with regard to the amount of precipitation. The analysis of the seasonal structure during the anomalous years, with regard to temperature and the amount of precipitation, made it possible to pinpoint years particularly unfavorable for agricultural production. There was a certain repeatability of unfavorable conditions, tied to the existence of a relatively stable 8-year cycle of temperature change, which was especially noticeable during the wintertime. During the last two decades of the 20th century, high temperature values, occurring also in the summertime, in combination with insufficient precipitation, contributed to the occurrence of dry spells and even periods of drought. The occurrence of dry spells during the vegetation period and the extreme shortening of the vegetation period have a significant effect upon the amount of grain crop production.

Analysis of time series was performed of cloudiness, air temperature and precipitation for the years 1951-2000, the data used representing lowland Poland. The properties of the temporal course of these elements of climate and the interrelations between their variability in time have been determined. The strength of dependence of precipitation and temperature upon the magnitude of cloudiness in the annual cycle has been assessed with the linear correlation coefficient. The essential climate-forming role of cloudiness has been confirmed. The magnitude of cloudiness over Poland explains up to 70% of variability of temperature and precipitation. These interrelations are the strongest in the warmer half of the year. Atmospheric circulation and cloudiness explain up to 85% of variability of the climate elements studied.

It is typical of breeding experimentation to conduct experiments on large breeding material tested on small plots with a limited number of replications. Under such conditions, observations made on adjacent plots are biased by the effect of autocorrelation and fertility trends. The actual treatment effects can be masked and the capability of the breeder to detect true treatment differences is impaired. This paper deals with the problem of the estimation of effects of spatial variability and their impact on the efficiency of treatment comparisons. The considerations are based on the results from a breeding experiment with 25 treatments of fodder pea arranged according to the partially balanced incomplete block design (IBD) with 4 replications. Plant height and seed yield were analysed with the conventional statistical method ANOVA, the nearest neighbour analysis (NNA) and kriging. Eventually, the efficiency of the neoclassical methods relative to the completely randomised design (CRD) and randomised block design (RBD) was calculated. The estimation of the treatment effect on plant height was accomplished most efficiently with the NNA, whereas the efficiency of the alternative methods in the estimation of seed yield was comparable to the efficiency of the RBD.

Genotypic and phenotypic variances, genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance were estimated for 16 agronomical characters in West African okra for two seasons, using 25 West African okra lines of diverse origin. Considerable differences were observed for some characters in the two seasons. Number  of days to flowering, number of leaves at flowering, plant height at flowering and number of pods at branches showed  seasonal differences. The estimates of genotypic coefficients of variation (gcv) in the two seasons were close in many cases. The gcv values ranged from 1.41 for number of days to flowering in the early season to 68.63 for number of branches per plant in the late season planting. Heritability estimates ranged from 5.02% for number of leaves at flowering in the early season to 99.54% for weight of matured pod during the early season. This study highlighted the significance of genotype-environment interaction in the breeding programmes of West African okra. The relatively large genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability estimates and genetic advance for number of pods at stem, number of pods per plant, number of branches per plant, weight of matured pods and seed yield per plant, were indicative of likely effectiveness of selection for such characters.

Opis:
The paper contains the results of natural film experiments carried out on inland waters in the Dead Vistula (Martwa Wisła) catchment area during 1999–2002 using the integrated Langmuir trough-Wilhelmy plate system,w hich ‘cuts out’ an undisturbed film-covered area without any physicochemical sample processing. The static film parameters result from the generalized scaling procedures applied to the surface pressure-area isotherms. They appear to correspond well to observations of the film composition (Alim, MW, Eisoth),film solubility and the miscibility of its components (via R, ΔSc and y factors),and surface concentration (πeq, Γeq). A novel approach is presented for the adsorption dynamics on the basis of the mixed kinetic-diffusion model and analyses of the dynamic surface pressure plots, whic h leads to the determination of the effective relative diffusion coefficient Deff/D and activation energy barrier Ea/RT . There is reason to believe that certain classes of film-forming components or ‘end-members’ may dominate the static and dynamic surface properties. Some of these substances can be used as source-specific surface-active biomarkers to trace temporal and spatial changes due to environmental factors or the production of biological matter. The concept was tested for the Dead Vistula river and its tributaries. The results demonstrate that natural films are a complex mixture of biopolymeric molecules covering a wide range of solubilities, sur face activities and molecular masses with an apparent structural film architecture. Such studies could lead to the development of film structure parameters – indicators of ecosystem quality and the state of the environment.

Radiation data recorded at 12 sites around the central part of the Baltic Sea during 1996–2000 drawn from the BALTEX (Baltic Sea Experiment) meteorological data archives are used to study the spatio-temporal variability of daily global radiation totals. The annual average daily global radiation total varies from about 10MJ m−2 at Visby (on Gotland) and Kołobrzeg (on the coast of Poland) to less than 9 MJ m−2 at Z¯ıl¯ani (inland Latvia), ˇ Silut˙e (Lithuania) and Jokioinen (Finland). The monthly average daily global radiation total over the whole region extends from 0.93 in December to 19.0 in June. The variability in global radiation is analysed on the basis of the fraction of the daily total at the top of the atmosphere. The spatial and temporal variability is the least in August – this shows that the variation in the cloud cover and atmospheric properties at this time of year is the smallest. The spatial correlation is the strongest between the two Finnish stations – Vantaa and Jokioinen. It is also high between Stockholm and Norrk¨oping, on the east coast of Sweden. The correlation coefficients are the largest over the whole area in April. Radiation data from coastal stations are compared with an earlier parameterization based on ship observations (Rozwadowska & Isemer 1998, Isemer & Rozwadowska 1999). It is concluded that in climatological research, actinometric data from Visby can be used to characterize the radiation field over the northern part of the Baltic Proper and those from Kołobrzeg to characterize the adiation field over the southern part of this sea.

9-months tapeworms obtained from 3- 6-specimen populations of the 42nd generation of Hymenolepis diminuta WMS „strain" were compared with tapeworms obtained from quantitatively similar populations deriving from one-specimen infections of H. diminuta WMS il1. In both groups of tapeworms the majority of strobilas had unilateral position of genital pares (PGP), while the remaining ones were characterized by variable PGP. The latter appeared in 41.4% of H. diminuta WMS „strain" tapeworms and in only 24.6% of tapeworms coming from H. diminuta WMS il1. In tapeworms with unilateral as well as with variable PGP deriving from H. diminuta WMS il1, the average number of type 0p3a proglottids (all three testes on the aporal side) was significantly higher than in H. diminuta WMS „strain". It results most probably from suitable selection of mother specimens for successive generations of H. diminuta WMS il1. In both compared groups the growth of the number of PGP changes was correlated positively with the number of type 2p1a proglottids and negatively with the numer of type 1p2a and 0p3a proglottids.

Analyses were done using empirical orthogonal function (EOF) and wavelet spectrum analysis in order to know spatial and temporal distributions related to the main forcing of the ocean climate variability for the period of January 1997 to December 2008 (12 years). The first EOF modes of Chl-a, SSHA and SST accounted for 42.8%, 36.5%, and 27.4% of total variance, corresponded with interannual signal for all the first modes, respectively. The spatial patterns of the first and second EOF modes of SSHA, SST and Chl-a gave a very typical cold water of SSHA, low SST and high Chl-a concentration located along the southern coast of Indonesian archipelago and warm water of SSHA, high SST and much less Chl-a concentration in the offshore region to make frontal areas along the latitudinal line around 10–12ºS. The results showed that total variance of the first two mode of SSHA, SST, and Chl-a explain 59.94%, 35.52%, and 55.26 %, respectively. These infer that SSHA and Chl-a give more response to the climate variability of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) forcing in the study area.

This study assessed the artisanal fisher folk’s perception of the effects of variability in climatic factors on fish yield in Kainji Lake basin. The specific objectives were to: describe the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents; assess the artisanal fisher folk’s perception of the effects of variability in climatic factors on fish yield; and assess the influence of variability in climatic factors on fish yield. Both primary and secondary data was used for the study. Primary data was collected from 173 respondents using structured questionnaires while secondary data was obtained from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and the National Institute of Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR), all of them located in New Bussa, Niger State. Once collected, the data was analyzed based on descriptive and inferential statistics involving the use of multiple regression models. As shown by the results, 91.32% of respondents were male; many (75.14%) of them aged between 41 and 60. Most of them (90.18%) were married and had Quranic education (96.62%). 48.74% had a household composed of 6 to 10 members. The respondents perceived all the factors of climate variability (draught, change in the lake’s water levels, variations in the seasonal calendar, change in seasonal rainfall, Harmattan intensity and change in temperatures) as unfavorable developments (with small variations in the mean scores). As an exception, humidity and change in sunlight conditions were believed to be favorable aspects by the respondents. The implication is that all the variables except humidity and change in sunlight conditions will adversely affect the fish yield, as claimed by the respondents. As shown by the results of a multiple regression study of the influence of variability in climatic factors on fish yield, the temperature had a negative influence on fish yield, whereas water inflow had a positive effect. The study recommends that the local population should attend adult literacy classes and improve their formal education levels. The management of NIFFR and other higher authorities, such as the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Environment, that are vested with the responsibility of managing the water bodies, should be advised to stock the water bodies with fish species that are resistant to temperature. In turn, the artisanal fisher folk should be encouraged to improve on their management practices, especially as regards overfishing and the use of obnoxious fishing methods. Also, they should extend their livelihood to such areas as crop production, animal breeding, trading/commerce and services as alternative income diversification strategies to cushion the effect of declining fish yields as a result of climate change.

The species of the Late Devonian, earliest Famennian placoderm fish Bothriolepis jeremejevi has been downranked to subspecies Bothriolepis leptocheira jeremejevi comb. nov. in a result of detailed morphological studies of the type specimens and abundant new material from the type locality of the Sosnogorsk Formation, South Timan, Komi Republic, Russia. This taxon closely resembles Bothriolepis leptocheira leptocheira from Scotland, B. leptocheira curonica from Latvia, and B. leptocheira ssp. from Severnaya Zemlya differing only in small deviations of the size, proportions and shape of some plates of the armour. The composition of vertebrate assemblages from Scotland, Latvia, and Severnaya Zemlya containing B. leptocheira demonstrates a reduced diversity of antiarch placoderm, acanthodian, and sarcopterygian fishes; however, the Sosnogorsk assemblage differs in a larger diversity containing very primitive tetrapod and diversified sarcopterygian fishes including dipnoans and porolepiforms but lacking acanthodians. Wide distribution of a single species of Bothriolepis and usually diminished diversity of vertebrates suggest that the earliest Famennian vertebrate assemblages conform the survival faunas of the latest Frasnian–earliest Famennian biotic crisis.

Opis:
Introduction: Syncope is defined as transient loss of consciousness, due to decrease in brain perfusion. The most frequent mechanism is vasovagal syncope. In many patients, the cause of syncope remains unspecified, despite an extensive diagnostic work-up. Tilt-test (TT) is an acknowledged diagnostic tool for syncope. Currently, the so-called Italian protocol of TT is most widely used. Vasovagal syncope is caused by impaired circulatory regulation in response to orthostatic stress. One of the available tools to examine the influence of the nervous system on the circulation is the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). Despite numerous publications concerning HRV parameters and autonomic regulation in patients with syncope, direct comparisons and metaanalysis of the results is impossible, due to variability of TT protocols and study group specifications. Aim of the study: As there is no uniform model of HRV during TT, we aimed to analyze HRV parameters during TT (performed according to the Italian protocol) in patients with vasovagal syncope, in order to determine the possible application of HRV measurements in clinical practice in that group of patients. Detailed objectives were: (1) analysis and comparison of HRV in patients with and without the history of syncope; (2) analysis of HRV changes in consecutive stages of TT; (3) identification of possible HRV differences between patients with positive and negative TT results. Materials and methods: Patients between 18 and 50 years of age were qualified for the study, if they had a history of at least 2 incidents of syncope or presyncope within the preceeding 6 months, and if signs and symptoms indicated the vasovagal mechanism. The study group included 150 patients: 100 consecutive patients with a postive TT result (POS), and 50 consecutive patients with a negative TT result (NEG). The control group (CG) comprised 50 volunteers with no history of syncope nor presyncope, matched according to age and sex to the study group. In all patients a TT was performed according to the Italian protocol, with paced breathing at a rate of 15/min. Time-domain (meanRR, SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50) and frequency-domain (abs_LF, abs_HF, rel_LF, rel_HF, norm_LF, norm_HF, LF/HF) HRV parameters were analyzed and compared at different stages of TT in the study groups as specified above. Results: 100 patients at the age of 18-44 years were included in the POS group, 50 patients at the age of 18-39 years in the NEG group, and 50 volunteers at the age of 20-39 in the CG. Volunteers in the control group developed unexpectedly high percentage of positive TT (14 patients). For consistency of analysis, the CG was thus subdivided according to the result of the TT into CG_POS (positive result of TT) – 14 patients, and CG_NEG (negative result of TT) – 36 patients. Based on HRV analaysis, no significant differences in HRV values were noted between patients with a history of syncope and positive or negative result of TT. Upright tilt resulted in HRV changes of the same direction and value in syncopal patients in the POS and NEG goup, as well as in patients in the CG_NEG group. Conclusion: HRV values and changes of those values at subsequent stages of TT were not different between syncopal patients with postive or negative TT result, or negative TT control group. The Italian protocol of TT may be associated with a surprisingly high percentage of false positive results.

This article is devoted to the analysis of the suffixes variability of the Russian verb on the example of prefixed imperfective verbs. The empirical material was based on the Russian National Corpus. The use of the corpus analysis method made it possible to distinguish all prefixed verbs with variable suffixes: -ыва-/-ива- and а-/-я- (e.g. замеривать – замерять, заготавливать – заготовлять). The results of the study showed that the formation of verbs with suffixes variability determine many problems of the modern Russian language – from phonetics (e.g. взре́зать – взреза́ть – взре́зывать), and lexical semantics, to stylistic and aspectual semantics.

The purpose of the paper is to analyze the spatial variability of precipitation in Poland in the years 1981–2010. The average annual rainfall was 607 mm. Precipitation in Poland is characterized by high spatial and temporal variability. The lowest annual precipitation was recorded in the central part of the country, where they equaled 500 mm. The highest annual precipitation totals were determined in the south, equaling 970 mm. The average precipitation in the summer half-year is 382 mm (63% of the annual total). On the basis of data from 53 climate stations, maps were made of the spatial distribution of precipitation for the period of the year and winter and summer half-year. The kriging method was used to map rainfall distribution in Poland. In the case study, cross-validation was used to compare the prediction performances of three periods. Kriging, with exponential type of semivariogram, gave the best performance in the statistical sense. Their application is justices especially in areas where landform is very complex. In accordance with the assumptions, the mean prediction error (ME), mean standardized prediction error (MSE), and root mean-square standardized prediction error (RMSSE) values are approximately zero, and root-mean-square prediction error (RMSE) and average standard error (ASE) reach values well below 100.

The thesis of the article is that by focusing attention on the values of the average measurement of school achievement, we ignore variability, thereby reducing significantly the understanding of dynamics in students’ behaviour, development and learning (acquisition of knowledge and skills). The article attempts to show that the approach focused on trends in average is not well fitted to the dynamic nature of phenomena diagnosed in education and can be the source of many artefacts. The pitfalls in which in this approach we most often fall include: (a) a static measurement; (b) averaging the results; (c) the treatment of standard deviation as a measurement error and noise information which is not worth dealing with.

From the ecological and economic points of view it is necessary to change agricultural practice towards low- input cultivation systems. This requires breeding of new cultivars with improved utilization efficiency of mineral nutrients. The response of fifty spring wheat cultivars representing different origin and years of release (from 1990 to 1996) to different concentrations of the Hoagland nutrient solution was investigated under controlled conditions (climatic chamber). A wide variability in N, P, K contents, their utilization efficiency and production of dry matter was found among wheat cultivars at the shooting phase of plant development at all nutrient concentrations applied. The variability coefficient decreased with the increasing concentration of Hoagland solution. Old Polish cultivars (released 1900 – 1960) and most of the intermediate cultivars (released 1961 – 1980) showed high of N, P, K utilization efficiency. The modern cultivars (released after 1981) showed either high or low N, P, K utilization efficiency. This efficiency was determined by dry matter (r= 0.94 - 0.98) and N, P, K contents (r= 0.62 - 0.94). The majority of spring wheat cultivars showed almost linear response of the evaluated parameters to increased nutrient concentration in Hoagland solution. It was been proved that genetic variability of N, P, K utilization efficiency can be assessed as early as at shooting phase.

Opis:
Light verb constructions are typically interpreted as idiom-like, fixed patterns in the literature (see e.g. Forgács 2015). However, corpus data suggest that such constructions may also display variability, potentially inviting a study in terms of synonymy. For instance, this is the case with barátságot köt [lit. ‘tie a friendship’] ~ barátságot sző [lit. ‘weave a friendship’] ~ barátságot épít [lit. ‘build a friendship’], all meaning ‘make friends’. In the present case study, I explore patterns of the structure N-ba/be ‘into N’ + V, in particular feledésbe V ‘become forgotten’ (where feledésbe means ‘into oblivion’), homályba V ‘become obscure’ (where homályba means ‘into obscurity’) and sötétségbe V ‘become dark’ (where sötétségbe means ‘into darkness’). More specifically, I examine variants of these LVCs (e.g. homályba vész [lit. ‘be lost into obscurity’] ~ homályba szürkül [‘fade into oblivion’]), yielding synonym groups. Primarily using corpus data from the Hungarian National Corpus, I seek to find out how these three synonym groups are related semantically, and how their similarities and differences can be described by studying i. central and marginal patterns within them and ii. verbal lexemes (elfelejtődik ‘become forgotten’, elhomályosul ‘become obscure’ and elsötétedik ‘become dark’, respectively) with which they are synonymous.

It also explains what is meant by the incommensurability of scientific theories, and shows that the term “incommensurability” has a vague meaning in the philosophy of science. Issues of intertheoretical incommensurability have been the subject of many research papers. This article explores just one such approach, which deals with the vagueness of the term “incommensurability” by distinguishing five levels of incommensurability with respect to scientific theories. This intellectual tool also facilitates the grasping of differences between the epistemic frameworks being analysed. The issues involved are far-reaching, and their detailed consideration exceeds the scope of single article. Therefore, I have decided to present them in two separate papers. In this one, I explore only the methodological level of incommensurability of epistemic frameworks. While exploring that level, I focus on different standards of what counts as scientific, and on criteria for evaluating research outcomes of the sort advocated by followers of the different epistemic frameworks.

Opis:
Passive area sources, such as primary settling tanks, located in the area of wastewater treatment plants can significantly impact odour air quality. This paper presents the variability of odour emissions from the primary settling tank at the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant (MWWTP) during a one-year study of odour concentrations determined by dynamic olfactometry. The investigations indicated that the highest monthly average value of the specified odour emission rate was for July (49.89 ouE/m2/s). Preliminary statistical analysis results using a multiple regression model showed the statistical significance of the independent variables in the form of wastewater temperature and retention time concerning the specific odour emission rate values.

Opis:
Uzyskane w trakcie badań terenowych informacje wraz z zarejestrowanym materiałem muzycznym stanowią źródłowy materiał badawczy, a przedstawione w artykule informacje dotyczą jedynie wybranych parafii.
This article is dedicated to research on the religious folk songs of the district of Postavy. The territory chosen for this research has the same borders as the district of Postavy, defined by the Catholic Church authorities. The main sources of the research are primarily catholic communities. The main aim of the given research was to preserve and to document the oral versions of catholic folk religious songs. This article is an empirical observation based on conducting interviews with the local people of these areas. The information received in this way together with the recorded phonic material constitutes the source of material for analysis, the material mentioned in this article is taken from some of the parishes. Most interesting examples of songs have been chosen to analyze. It was also interesting to find songs that can be called contrafactum or disambiguation. Differences have been noticed between the records made during the interviews in the district of Postavy and the hymn book versions by means of comparing melody, metro-rhythmics and form. The research on the religious folk songs of the district of Postavy helps to get the idea of the present state of the catholic music culture in the given region and contributes to the study of one of the features of folk music in the Catholic Church tradition which is called variability.
