This paper takes a stance in the debate concerning scientific understanding. It claims that the case for a specific type of understanding, understanding without explanation (UwE), is still open, despite the tendency in the current literature that might suggest otherwise. The paper begins by situating the distinction between an explanatory and non-explanatory understanding in the debate on understanding by introducing Lipton’s account of UwE. The paper then discusses the significance of Lipton’s proposals for the debate and argues that Kelp’s interpretation does not exhaust the challenge they pose to any theory of understanding. The paper then examines the best articulated critique of Lipton’s account provided by Khalifa and rejects it as inadequate. It ends by sketching out a list of positive reasons that support the continued examination of UwE.

As educators, we not only want our students to be aware of global issues, but to actually care about them. If they are the ones who will lead the next generations as scientists, politicians, or economists, they are the ones who can contribute to the end of certain practices, such as student drop out or global warming. So, as teachers, we have to give them the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to help them deal with personal and global issues that will contribute to a more tolerant and peaceful world.

Purpose: To understand the concept of empathy by nurses, get to know the importance of empathy in performance the work of a nurse and to determine the ability of empathy among nurses. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 100 nurses (females and males) working in hospitals and clinics in Mazovia province. The control group consisted of 100 persons engaged in office work. A diagnostic survey method was used in the research. The research tools were: Davis’ Interpersonal Reactivity Index, Emotional Control Scale and a questionnaire prepared by the team concerning the concept of empathy in the opinion of nurses and presenting their opinion on the importance of empathy in personal contact with the patient. Results: The level of knowledge on empathy among nurses is on the average level. The average score on this scale was 17.35 (SD=3.40). Almost 85% of the respondents claimed that empathy is equal with compassion shown to the other person - the patient. Empathy was often confused with the show of compassion. There are significant differences between the level of empathy of nurses and the control group. The differences relate to the results in the scale of perspective-taking and the scale of empathic concern. Nurses often are able to feel the experience of others, and appear to concern the other (p<0.05). Understanding empathy is associated with more frequent displaying the feeling of anger. This is a positive feature, because those people had a better self-awareness and their experiences, including anger. They could express it on the outside, usually in the socially acceptable way. It was similar with those who were convinced of the positive impact of experiencing emotions during the healing process. Conclusions: Empathy is a positive factor influencing the quality of conducted nursing work. Steps should be taken to introduce workshops of interpersonal skills as a module in the nurses’ training course

Dialogue is a necessary way of inhabiting a shared world. However, the concept of dialogue at present has become ambiguous and often abused. The purpose of this article is to introduce order into this conceptual ambiguity. Ferdinand de Saussure distinguished language (langue) from speech (parole), and following him, Paul Ricoeur wrote about discourse of the event. Here different concepts of dialogue begin. Dialogue understood as the communication, in which the accent is located in the discourse, argumentation serving to elaborate a consensus of action taken and dialogue understood as a meeting of persons. Two first concepts of dialogue are found in Jürgen Habermas’ communication theory and in Ricoeur’s dialogue led in the form of ‘hospitality lent by language’. If the essence of communication theory of Habermas is a discourse, then the essence of Ricoeur’s ‘hospitality lent by language’ is an understanding of others. The essence of the third concept of dialogue, also called the meeting, developed by twentieth-century philosophy of dialogue, are presence and love. There is also a fourth form of dialogue introduced by Georg Simmel, constituting a priori foundations of social life. For him a function or a social role is the centre. However, we can also find the fifth form of dialogue in dialogical hermeneutics of Hans Georg Gadamer, trying to combine the discursive and personal dimensions. For him the centre is both the presence of other, as well as the truth happening in dialogue. All these conceptions of dialogue have important significance for pedagogy.

In this article, I am examining the role of categorization in understanding. The problem arises from well-known distinction between explanation and understanding, which has been for a century pursued in hermeneutic tradition. Categorization belongs to explanatory endeavor and its role in understanding is unclear. In order to delimit the scope of inquiry I am focusing on the weakest kind of categorization, so called categorization ad hoc. I am examining the hypothesis to the effect that categorization plays its role in hermeneutic circle as some sort of pre-understanding. Eventually, however, I reject this hypothesis. It is because it leads to hermeneutic paradox: The notion of pre-understanding has a meaning only in the context of full-fledged understanding, which is an unattainable ideal. Such ideal cannot be used as a personal criterion of the quality of one’s understanding. There is a tension between the feeling of understanding and the scarcity of personal means to justify this feeling. I am suggesting that similar, albeit weaker effect occurs also in more elaborate, scientific categorizations. What is really wrong in the passage from categorization to understanding is some form of self-understanding: We do not know whether we understand better, or at all when we put some categorical order onto our experience. We do not seem to have the required meta-understanding.

The article presents problems of intellectual intuition in metaphysics from a semiotic point of view. There are various types of intuition in philosophy: rational intuition, irrational intuition, and sensual intuition. All of them are immediate ways of cognition. Classical metaphysics uses intellectual intuition as its main method to find out and justify its statements. The main problem of intellectual intuition is an intersubjective approach to the object of metaphysics. The main aim of this paper is the objectivization and rationalization of intellectual intuition in language. The semantic notion of meaning and the pragmatic notion of understanding are the fundamental tools which are used to translate the issue of intuition from the subject-ma$er level into the language level. This operation allows to look at intuition in a non-psychological manner. It enables the objectivization of the method of intellectual intuition in the light of the understanding of meanings.

The article deals with the study of advertising slogans. A selection of English-language slogans and their translations into Ukrainian are presented. Their categorisation according to phonetic, lexical and syntactical principles facilitates the comparison between the inner meaning of the English slogans and their reflection or transformation into Ukrainian variants. The article attempts to investigate the perception and understanding of advertising slogans in English and their Ukrainian variants by the general Ukrainian-speaking public.
Autorzy prowadzą badania nad sloganami reklamowymi. Przedstawiają wybrane slogany anglojęzyczne i ich tłumaczenia na język ukraiński. Ich klasyfikacja według cech fonetycznych, leksykalnych i składniowych pozwala na porównanie wewnętrznego znaczenia sloganów angielskich z ich odzwierciedleniem lub transformacją na warianty ukraińskie. Autorzy podejmują próbę analizy percepcji i zrozumienia sloganów reklamowych w języku angielskim i ich ukraińskich wariantów przez ogół ukraińskojęzycznych odbiorców.

The author draws our attention to the importance and complexity of developing learners' understanding as the goal of education. Her starting point is the proposal of distinguishing two types of understanding, arising from different paradigms and highlighting different aspects of this process. She distinguishes factual understanding, which is the focus of traditional pedagogy embedded in the positivist paradigm, which comes down to the mental process of updating knowledge about objective reality, and experiential understanding, the importance of which is recognized by humanistic pedagogy, which assumes that the world available to a man is a reality of values and meanings, and the process of understanding should be considered as a feature of the human way of being, consisting in their constant interpretation. In the context of this duality of meanings of understanding, she considers the presence of factual and experiential understanding in the teleological pedagogical discourse - creating goals for the 21st century education. For this purpose, she reflects on leading international educational reports and documents regarding the education system in Poland (educational reports and provisions of legal acts), as well as recalls the classic taxonomy of goals, which is a model for practitioners in formulating educational goals. The analyzes lead to the conclusion that while at the level of setting the final goals, the importance of education in understanding the world in the sense of experiential understanding is indicated, this perspective changes at the level of intermediate and specific goals, where understanding has only material connotations.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: This article is intended as a contribution to discussion on the role of music philosophy in educating contemporary participants in the world of culture. From a broader perspective, it fosters reflection on the condition of the humanities today. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS:The author makes use of traditional literary studies, employing, as a music philosopher, a speculative method and availing herself of the tools of analytical philosophy; she also refers to the empirical experiences of musicians and listeners. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The argumentation is based on metacritical analysis of the subject literature within the scope of trends and challenges in music philosophy. The author considers the possibility of educating sensitive and active receivers of classical music. She invokes the reflection of the philosopher Peter Kivy in light of the discussion carried on with him by James O. Young and Jerrold Levinson. Irrespective of their differences of opinion, these philosophers all emphasised the role of the aesthetic education of the listener. The author highlights points on which the philosophers’ dispute is merely superficial. RESEARCH RESULTS: The subject literature is dominated by the analytical model. This results partly from the obligation to imitate the sciences that weighs upon the humanities and also from subjecting the results of humanistic reflection to processes of parametrisation. Music philosophy and musicology are increasingly divorced from live experience and are turning into elite disciplines, reserved solely for a narrow group of specialists. Therefore, we should aspire to specifying how the academic goals of music-related study can be reconciled with the mission of disseminating the culture of listening to music and understanding it. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The idea of interdisciplinary reflection on the experiencing of music should be promoted among scholars (musicologists and music philosophers).

The article analyses chosen extracts from the debate about philosophical qualities of pedagogical thinking. It presents the possibility of ethical reflection inspired by contemporary hermeneutical philosophy. This hermeneutical perspective comprehends understanding not only as one of the kinds of cognitive behaviour, but also as a way of being of a subject. The dilemma, dramatic quality and openness of pedagogical activity are underlined, as well as the impossibility of boiling down the justifications of that activity to the sphere of applications of theories. It indicates that hermeneutics opened (pedagogical) thinking towards such perspective on the relationship between the external order and duty and action, which frees from both: the dichotomy of romantic release versus passive subjection, as well as from the dilemma of the rational emancipation versus conditioned consent to surrender. It does not, however, give an external solution and does not diminish the importance of choice. It emphasises the individual character of moral choice and the importance of freedom and at the same time does not leave the man on his or her own. Ricoeur’s wounded cogito (cogito blessé) – as it is highlighted – is not an abandoned, lonely subject.

W artykule podejmowane jest zagadnienie dziejowo określonego rozumienia. W przyjętej tu perspektywie hermeneutycznej podmiot rozumiejący musi uświadomić sobie własną dziejowość i dziejowość swojego sposobu rozumienia, by odkryć prawdę o przedmiocie poznawanym. Co więcej, to właśnie zakorzenienie w dziejowej tradycji usprawnia nas do rozumienia w ogóle.
The hermeneutical approach raises the relevance of concioussness of twofold relationship between understanding and historical tradition. Hermeneutic reflection involves the correction of self-understanding and emphasizes that the possibility of reaching understanding is available to us only by our belonging to a historical community.

Janusz Korczak engaged children in writing novels intended for them. His writing experiments consisted in directly transferring children’s ideas to the paper, correcting and reworking the stories under the influence of the listeners’ comments, removing and cutting fragments of the text at their request. Following Korczak’s method, a reconstruction of understanding by modern children of created 85 years ago novel “Kajtuś Czarodziej” was made. Based on focus interviews, it was established that the fairytale context of reading is read by children on a multithreaded basis, filtered by reference to the present day, critically evaluated by older children. The linguistic layer is acceptable, while the transfer of the fairytale aspect to real life does not suit the contemporary young recipients. The children’s suggestions regarding the new plots of reading were mainly of mimetic character in relation to the original.

This article attempts exposure enterprise concept of intelligent and specify its characteristics. It identified three key features of the intelligent enterprise: learning, association and understanding. Detailed studies were characteristic of understanding. For this purpose, based on the results of empirical research conducted among students of the Faculty of Management and Economics Gdańsk University of Technology. Improving this feature enables enterprises to intelligently maintain a competitive edge.
W artykule podjęto próbę naświetlenia koncepcji przedsiębiorstwa inteligentnego oraz wyszczególnienia jego cech charakterystycznych. Zidentyfikowano trzy kluczowe cechy inteligentnego przedsiębiorstwa: uczenie się, kojarzenie oraz rozumienie. Szczegółowym badaniom poddano cechę rozumienia. W tym celu wykorzystano wyniki badań empirycznych przeprowadzonych wśród studentów Wydziału Zarządzania i Ekonomii Politechniki Gdańskiej. Doskonalenie tej cechy umożliwia przedsiębiorstwu inteligentnemu utrzymanie przewagi konkurencyjnej.

The authoress focuses on the word przyzwoitość ‘decency, decorum, propriety’ and examines the term on the basis of the corresponding dictionary entries, from the oldest to the latest, PELCRA-searched concordances of the PWN Polish Language Corpus, and Lublin-based Maria Curie-Skłodowska University students’ questionnaire-derived responses. As she concludes, the word przyzwoitość has clearly been evolving. Not only has the number of its referents increased, but also its semantic centre has been slightly shifted. Most recently, the word has been used in some sense of ‘propriety’, that is ‘fitting’, ‘suitable’, or ‘the way that it should be’, which means that something is good/appropriate in some respect but is not of any extraordinary quality. Nevertheless, in reference to selected objects it does amount to more than just the expected norm, or, at least, it resides in the higher limit of normal. Przyzwoitość then implies ‘better than average’, something like norm plus supplementary value, never average or below average. As postulated, this secondary meaning of the word is now gaining popularity at the expense of the original one that embraces moral issues. The latter happens to be appropriated by other domains, which is what probably explains a growing capacity of przyzwoitoœæ to appear in novel idiomatic expressions.

The aim of the article is to characterise and analyse Paul Amselek’s research approach to legal hermeneutics. The text provides an outline of Amselek’s assumptions and theses about legal interpretation, considered in the broad context of hermeneutics, and in the narrower context of legal logic and argument (including rhetoric and speech act theory). In point of fact, one of the methodological aims of Amselek’s philosophical reflection is to harmonise the two indicated contexts for framing interpretation — the wide context of hermeneutics, and the more narrow context of legal logic and argument. Amselek refers to issues in communication theory, reaching beyond the hermeneutic concept of text interpretation and evocation of the original authorial intention. He analyses the legal text-message in its content and argument layers, he also endeavours to specify the methodological possibilities of interpreting the attitudes and motivations of subjects — participants in communication situation (the sender and receiver of the message). He also inquires about the ethical attitudes of jurisdiction authorities, performing the interpretation of a body of law — the subjects responsible for lawmaking and the execution of law. Adopting post-Enlightenment anthropological assumptions, Amselek accepts the primacy of rationality in cognition, decision making, and activity of the human individual. However, in his considerations on interpretation he concurrently underscores the role of affective factors, motivating many choices and actions made by legal subjects.

Childlessness in marriage is still socially defined as otherness. It is a deviation from the current cultural standard and – as a consequence – it requires explanation and legitimization, especially when the otherness is deliberate. The aim of the conducted qualitative research was to establish personal definitions of the situation of childlessness in marriage applied by persons aged 50 and older. The study focused on cultural patterns of experiencing and validating this non-standard lifestyle. 21 interviews centered on this issue were conducted. The analysis of the obtained data showed that the most important variables determining the model of experiencing childlessness in marriage by the subjects were the causes of childlessness and the significance of having children in their individual hierarchy of values. In each individual case, the way of experiencing childlessness results from the configuration of the recognized order of motivation and evaluation. It also seems that the order of evaluation is significant to the entire functioning of these persons. It is relatively independent from the objective cause of childlessness.

This article demonstrates the results of the educational project “stimulating children’s thinking” carried out in some primary schools in a metropolitan environment (Lodz, Poland). The aim of the study was to identify the ways of understanding the concept of community by 9–10-year old children. In the didactical intervention operations designed, the research data came from participated observation, focus interview, and children’s production analysis (graphical visualization, pairedassociate learning tasks and tests of unfinished tasks). Based on my research, I see the need for triggering the cognitive activity of pupils in conditions that ensure the development of conceptual systems. Moreover, the findings suggest the need of broader understanding of educational environments in Polish educational culture.

Cognition of the world, construction of knowledge related to our surroundings, and expressing meanings that stem from our life experiences are by no means easy processes. A substantial part of our knowledge remains dormant, but its extraction makes it possible to grasp children’s visions of the world. Even if rarely applied in educational practice, creative activities remain a very effective approach to release children’s conceptualisation of the world. This paper presents research results that demonstrate the efficiency of creative-thinking techniques in extracting children’s visions of the world, as illustrated by the concept of the family. The study, which was conducted as a didactic intervention, was performed in the 2018-2019 school year on a group of younger pupils from a large city. The results reconstructed children’s process of understanding the above-mentioned concept and revealed the possibilities behind creative psychodidactics.

The study examines the associations of emotion understanding, interpersonal competencies, loneliness and correlated variables (perceived social support, quality of social networks). Two conceptual models of relations were tested. In the first model it was hypothesized that interpersonal competencies mediate relations between emotion understanding and loneliness, perceived social support and quality of social networks. In the second model emotion understanding was tested as a moderator of relationships between interpersonal competencies and loneliness, perceived social support and quality of social networks. Study 1 (n = 221) provided only a weak confirmation of the mediatory model, restricted to men. Study 2 (n = 206), employing different measures of emotion understanding and loneliness, confirmed weakly both the mediatory and moderatory models. In both studies a direct negative correlation between emotion understanding and loneliness was not confirmed.

The text Wittgenstein and Buddhism – their Comparison is a review of works of 30 authors who wrote about similarities between the philosophy of Wittgenstein and that of Buddhism, mainly of Nagarjuna. The similarities which have been mentioned are: anti-dogmatic and anti-doctrinal nature, set- ting limits in which the use of language has sense, a mystical base of language, rejection of thought as useless for language and understanding, atheism, the notion of unity of world and existence, admiration over miraculous nature of the world, identity of micro- and macro-cosmos, the conviction that any antitheses are of an illusory nature, realizing peace and clarity of mind as the aim of philosophy, the impossibility of adequate naming of psychic emotions, rejection of universals, and the therapeutic aspect of philosophy. The main difference between Wittgenstein and Nagarjuna is that the former looked for the source of problems in language, and the latter in mind.

The paper attempts to analyze the results of the European Social Survey Round 6 (2012, 2013), focusing on the section related to how democracy is understood in Poland and in the Czech Republic. The most interesting issue encompassed the differences in how democracy is defined in the two countries and the outcomes these differences produce in terms of the perceived legitimacy of the system, as well as demographic factors that correlate with differences in the understanding of democracy in both surveyed groups. Statistical analyses carried out in the paper indicated the presence of different definitions of democracy formulated in Poland and in the Czech Republic (the Czechs gave stronger emphasis to the liberal aspect of democracy, whereas Poles stressed its social aspects more). Nevertheless, the relationship between the definition of democracy and the perceived level of legitimacy of the democratic system (for dispersed and specific legitimacy alike) were found to be relatively weak, as was the case of the relationship between the understanding of democracy, system legitimacy and socio-demographic factors. The only factor found to be significant for the perceived level of legitimacy of the democratic system concerned the level of satisfaction with one’s own material situation.

The principal aim of this argument is to analyze the swift expansion in the proportion of older people across the globe, and to highlight the main social and economic forces causing this through methodological challenges especially through the lens of qualitative methodology. We recognize the enormity of the task. Drawing from a range of qualitative research studies provides enriched meanings about aging identity that can be used to shed light on how aging is experienced in equal to how it has been defined in macro or populational terms. Balancing micro and macro levels of understanding is key to open up broader level of explaining what it means to be an older person in different cultures Whilst this is a noble aim, there is no doubt that the rapid increase in population aging across the globe is signalling the most astonishing populational changes in the history of humankind that qualitative levels of understanding are uniquely placed to balance the huge figures in describing complex demography in that qualitative methodology unravels the facts and instead reveals the narratives, meanings and identity formation of research subjects; whereas statistical research has pre-dominantly made its findings looking at people as research objects or as a ‘number’ (Gruber and Wise 2004). The balance is key but this paper explores the issue of comparative aging underpinned by what Powell and Cook (2001) call ‘qualitative theorising’ in making sense of statistical and experiential aging.

The present article attempts to take note of some existing problems with the legal texts translation. The legal texts translation has to take into consideration the fact, that the text is experienced in two ways - translated text is the subject to further interpretation. A translator translating the legal text from Russian into Polish faces difficulties with choosing the proper lexems. Russian-Polish translating dictionaries do not always present all the meanings of the given lexems and first and foremost they do not always consider language of the law. A translator himself has to use in a translation a inner sentence context, which exceeds the context of a word which is completive to a phrase, as well as a translator has to use a surround sentence context and in comprehensiveness a legal language context which often allows to reduce the meaning of translated lexeme in relation to semantic field, resulting from the context of a word which is completive to a phrase.

The conceptual category of the reasoning narrative is the starting point for the considerations presented. Looking at the concept through the prism of interpretative interactionism and the phenomenological and hermeneutic approach helps to discover the meaning and significanceof each of the perspectives for the discovery of wealth of understanding of everything that the human person is involved in and of the world he resides in, creates and converts to his own needs. The considerations in the text stress the importance of human reflection,ability to retrace feelings in the individual biography and of being able to interpret one’s own experiences. Presenting these considerations in the biographic-narrative orientation reveals the essence of understanding of the issues discussed in the article from the perspective of the experiencing subject.

Flexible querying is all about providing users with more intuitive and efficient means of interaction with information or document bases, so that retrieving the items they are interested in becomes easier and more pleasant. In this process three steps may be identified as crucial in determining the overall result: understanding the user's request, understanding the content of what is available, and matching between the two. In this paper we present an integrated soft computing framework to tackle all three steps by incorporating fuzzy relational knowledge stored in modified ontological structures, a modified agglomerative clustering approach to knowledge based information processing, a detailed profile modeling methodology, and a novel approach to handling of large and sparse transitive relations.

The text is based on research carried out among schoolchildren of third class of primary school. It shows a way of thinking about the world typical of children and constructing their social knowledge. The text was produced as a result of series of meetings with schoolchildren of 1–3 classes and the struggle to find answers to their questions of social, existential, ethical and moral nature. It reflects childlike concepts of social knowledge. It is based on quality tests results conveyed with the usage of dialogue method. In the theoretical part there are assumptions of interpretive paradigm and theses about social interactionist theory, linguistic relativism and social and psychological constructivism as a background for the discussion. The concept of the research includes the characteristics and justification for the application of the dialogue method and in addition to that, it gives insight into the results of the research which is the reconstruction of the image of the world typical of children and reconstruction of the meanings given to social ideas by children during their conversations with adults. The research part includes the image of the world constructed by children with excerpts from their utterances, from their ways of understanding the world, their perception of their environment. It is divided into parts entitled: ‘Children search’, ‘Children think’, ‘Children speak’, ‘Children construct’. Each part is packed with children’s hot knowledge, their experience and their ways of understanding the world.

Migrant integration remains a continuous challenge in many EU countries, as shown by the retreat from multiculturalism and the concerns regarding Muslim migrants. In recent years, the increase in asylum-seekers has added further complexities to the issue. Meanwhile, volunteering is considered to be an important aspect of today’s society and a thermometer of civic well-being. Bringing together the field of migration studies and research on volunteering, we investigate whether volunteering would foster processes of integration and intercultural relations. We do so by presenting an innovative empirical study based on interviews and self-administered questionnaires conducted at two points in time over a period of about a year in a specific setting that brought together EU and third-country nationals in volunteering activities in six European contexts. Thus, we are able to provide an in-depth account of volunteering experiences and their effects on intercultural relations and processes of integration. The research highlights how volunteering fosters social interactions, intersecting with dynamics of inclusion. It is a valuable tool that strengthens the community as well as the process of social integration, helping to overcome the tensions and conflicts that persist in European societies. At the same time, we argue that volunteering cannot make up for all integration challenges since the process of societal integration requires a more comprehensive approach which includes tackling discrimination in structural integration.

This paper sets to analyse the hermeneutical process of highlighting at work in the preface written by the North Irish poet Seamus Heaney to his retranslations of Beowulf (1999). My analysis takes into account the generic identity of the preface by considering it as a textual subgenre where the translator becomes a metatranslator to voice herself out of invisibility, engages in a (self-reflexive) hermeneutical analysis and “justification” by commenting on the choice of the translated work and their translation choices. The analysis is carried out with the help of two concepts elaborated by Gadamer: situatedness and self-understanding to show how Seamus Heaney fuses different horizons in the process of his retranslation.

In this editorial introduction to the issue, the author and editor of the journal “Zagadnienia Rodzajów Literackich. Formy kultury i teorii” tries to use several concepts to deal with eleven texts gathered in the issue. The main theoretical problem arises because the issue is not focused on a particular subject. Instead, the author of the introduction claims that most articles can be described using a concept of extravagance and the other ones — applying a concept of reportage. All writings in this editorial are described metaphorically as frottage and parergon. The first article is characterized using a generic concept of extravaganza and eccentrics. The second article is a description of the uses magic and modern enchantment as understood by Max Weber, the third — rococo and militancy. The fourth article is about translating on the margins, the fifth on multilingual postcolonial translation, the sixth on post-human analysis of national myths. The second part of the issue is more devoted to reportage in the context of gonzo journalism and storytelling and quality research, as well as crypto philosophy. The final point is about understanding as a passerby. Frottage and parergon are the most crucial theoretical concepts used in this editorial introduction. In the humanities, such concepts can be seen as political through and through.

This review article discusses the book Understanding How Science Explains the World by Kevin McCain, published by Cambridge University Press (2022). With an impressive combination of clarity and depth, McCain provides the reader with a firm grasp of how science works, of what science aims to achieve, and of what makes science a successful epistemic enterprise. The review article reconstructs the book’s overall dialectic and identifies one potential point of tension which concerns the role of truth or accuracy in scientific knowledge.

Architecture has always been a means of expressing world viewpoints that are governing in a given society. Gothic architecture expressed man's desire to come closer to divine infinity. Gothic cathedrals would combine two worlds separated by an infinite metaphysical distance. Baroque architecture attempted to include in the vertical scheme the whole heritage of the passing and the temporal: aspects of nature, human existence and the richness of human spirituality. All this in a temporal, diachronic aspect, an aspect subjected to constant change, an aspect full of energy, dynamics and motion. The 20th century introduced trends that attempted to unite the visible world with the divine. Matter was divine and the divinity was material. This pantheistic interpretation of nature was reflected in architecture. Will Christian architecture come to an end or will it triumph? Will architecture be a stumblingblock or a spring-board for the Christian faith? This triumph will not be achieved by looking for new arguments in the never-ending debate, but through a better understanding of Christian Revelation, which is known but superficially, both by Christians and their adversaries. That is the reason why architecture contains and expresses merely a general outline of Christian doctrine. Ideas expressed in other architectural styles also have a superficial influence.

Studies into fiction and its linguistic specifies are frequently done from the perspective of comprehension. In this study comprehension means finding and construing senses. Therefore the entire text is the area for building up senses. The sense of the text is explained as a configuration of ties and relationships among various elements in a situation emerging as a result of some activity or communication at the moment when that situation is being created or recreated by a person who adequately understands the text. In the article the figurative sense of the prose by Boris Pasternak and the semantic diversity of the language in the prose by Henry James and the comedy by William Shakespeare are shown. In prose semantic vagueness and polysemantic ambiguity are connected. The process of understanding the texts of implied sense is described. A complementary principle in the system of language tunes down and brings together the multicoloured canvas of the text. The naturalistic meticulousness is contrasted to the overall whole. Determination arouses the reader’ s curiosity and encourages him to look for the inexplicitly expressed sense of the text. Today, given the available findings of extensive scholarly research, it is imperative to probe into the issues surrounding sense from new offbeat angles and vantage points.

Reflecting on the understanding of the world from the perspective of children is significant for several reasons. First, it allows us to examine the kind of thinking and actions of children which is of an interpretative nature: it reveals not only the child’s personal knowledge, but above all, the ways of understanding, categorising and evaluating an ambiguous and often conflicted reality. It also provides an opportunity to reconstruct the cognitive skills manifested in the verbal and non-verbal reactions of children put in front of an organised problematic situation. In view of such a conclusion, it is worth taking the time to analyse the complex problem: how children perceive the world and how to reconstruct in practice children’s processes associated with understanding, categorising, and evaluating the world.

Carried out theoretical and empirical research led to the emergence of understanding of internal and external. Understanding internal intelligent enterprise applies spheres: employees and for all-sized enterprise. While understanding the external environment it is aimed at and the need to adapt the company.
W artykule podniesiono istotę pojęcia „rozumienie” w aspekcie inteligentnego przedsiębiorstwa. Przeprowadzone badania teoretyczne i empiryczne pozwoliły na wyłonienie rozumienia wewnętrznego i zewnętrznego. Rozumienie wewnętrzne w inteligentnym przedsiębiorstwie dotyczy sfer: pracowników oraz całego przedsiębiorstwa. Natomiast rozumienie zewnętrzne skierowane jest na otoczenie i potrzebę dostosowania przedsiębiorstwa.

The aim of this article is to extract from Gadamer’s writings his view about understanding in the humanities and to confront the results of this research with analyses of other interpreters. The key to the epistemology of the humanities is the ontology of its subject and, above all, its object. The former has been characterized by its finiteness, historicity and irremovable assumptionism of cognition. To the latter two basic features have been ascribed: dynamism (it exists only as the motion of thinking) and indefiniteness in such, which is connected with the fact that it is not given, but created by the subject. In the humanities understood in such a way we can only have the existential, and not classic, concept of truth. The very humanistic activity is more about creation than cognition.

Discovering advertisement functions by children. Perceived reality and persuasiveness of advertisingEvolution in perception of advertisement in children takes place in middle and late childhood. The most significant change concerns discovering persuasive function of this form of communication. Considering advertisement as one of the forms of audiovisual transmission we can use the knowledge about the specific character of media understanding by children in order to perform a complex description of these processes in childhood. The aim of the present study is to determine if discovering of the persuasive function of the advertisement is accompanied by changes of its realism evaluation, which is the principle of creating the genre of each media transmission specimen. The studied population covered 165 children in five group aged between 4 and 8. The children were individually interviewed about the functions of the advertisement and the perceived reality of the information presented in it. In the studied period of childhood the study revealed changes of the children’s view of the advertisement communication, which becomes evaluated in connection with discovery of its persuasive function. The change proceeds from perceiving advertisement similarly to educational programmes and cartoons, which educate and entertain, towards perceiving advertisement as a persuasive communication presenting real objects in the context of unreliable information.

Motyw hermeneutyki należał do jednego z najważniejszych toposów teologii ewangelickiej XX wieku. Hermeneutyka jako samodzielna dyscyplina badawcza w ramach protestantyzmu rozwinęła się w XVII wieku za sprawą Johanna Conrada Dannhauera (1603-1666). Etyka ewangelicka jako wyodrębniony dział teologii powstała za sprawą Georga Calixta (1586-1656), autora Epitome Theologiae moralis. Dopiero jednak za sprawą Schleiermachera, ojca neoprotestantyzmu, wyodrębniła się hermeneutyka filozoficzna per se, czyli synteza istniejących dotąd koncepcji interpretacji – ogólna teoria rozumienia. U Schleiermachera odnajdujemy również motyw postrzegania etyki teologicznej jako teorii rozumienia państwa, społeczeństwa i kultury. Współczesna etyka ewangelicka w całości teologicznego namysłu pełniła szczególną rolę w końcu lat 80. i początku 90. XX wieku. Wówczas też motyw rozumienia jako specyfi cznego zadania etyki znalazł szczególną rolę w pismach Trutza Rendtorff a, Wolfh arta Pannenberga, a wśród najnowszych opracowań przedmiotu, w etyce – dziele szwajcarskiego teologa Johannesa Fischera.
The theme of hermeneutics was considered one of the most important subjects of 20th century Protestant Th eology. Hermeneutics as an independent discipline in Protestant Th eology began to develop in the 17th century, thanks to Johann Conrad Dannhauer (1603-1666) who published his concepts at that time. Protestant ethics as a separate section of theology was presented by Georg Calixt (1586-1656) in his book Epitome Theologiae moralis. It is, however, in fact Friedrich Schleiermacher, who can be acknowledged as the father of philosophical hermeneutics. In his theological ethics we can find a particular function of the discipline as a way to understanding the state, society and culture. Th e system of ethics played a central role in Protestant Th eology in the late 80s and 90s of the 20th century. Among the most important theologians who emphasized the hermeneutical function of Protestant ethics Trutz Rendtorff and Wolfh art Pannenberg must be mentioned, and among the most recent papers on the subject, the work of Swiss theologian Johannes Fischer.

An exquisite artist of the word himself, Cyprian Norwid was also a voracious, observant, and critical reader. He authored many writings about reading, or the ‘art of reading’ that requires effort, commitment, and collaboration with the writer. The poet used the verb ‘to read’ in several meanings: 1) ‘To put letters into words and words into sentences, and thus discern their content and decode them at the fundamental level’; 2) ‘To utter or render aloud, perorate, recite’; 3) ‘To consider, analyse, interpret, and grasp the actual meaning of words and utterances’; and 4) ‘To examine someone or something closely, and thus try to obtain an indepth understanding of them’. Norwid’s observations about reading provide a significant starting point for many studies and interpretations of his other works. However, hardly any of them are dedicated to non-specialist audiences. The most recent publication of this type, Norwid – interpretacje [Norwid: Interpretations], is a collective work of a few authors. It has been prepared as part of the ‘Jubilees’ series to celebrate the Year of Cyprian Norwid.

Celem tekstu jest zobrazowanie procesu tworzenia tekstu poetyckiego. Autor naucza, że do napisania wiersza będącego sposobem docierania do rzeczy ukrytych, konstruowania świata potrzebne są natchnienie, inspiracja (przeżycie), nośna w treści wizja oraz jej artykulacja. Potrzebna jest poiesis, i jej towarzysz – utwór poetycki. Prócz tego potrzebne jest również rozumienie różnych sposobów „zorganizowania” myśli. Autor przekonuje, czego dowodem są zamieszczone w tekście wiersze, że poezja przynosi mnogość treści ukrytych gdzieś głęboko, w naszej jaźni. A racjonalność wymaga uprawy, uprawy różnorodnej i skutecznej.
The aim of the text is to show how to write poetry. The author teaches that to write a poem, which is a way of reaching what is hidden and constructing the world, you need to have an inspiration, an experience, an expressive vision, and the articulation of that vision. You need both poiesis and its companion: a poem. Apart from that, you also need to understand various ways of “organizing” thoughts. The author argues (illustrating this with the poems included in the text) that poetry refers to a variety of contents concealed deep in our self. Rationality, in turn, needs to be diversely and effectively cultivated.

The study falls into the field of translation studies and deals with the issue of translation activity as a process in which the translator works with the concepts of equivalence as well as the concept of culturally appropriate translation, taking into account the quality translation product. Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie koncepcji kiczu ujętej w ramy hermeneutyki filozoficznej H.-G. Gadamera. Rozważono przykłady wypowiedzi z obszaru sztuki i form wyrazu obecnych w codziennym życiu. Starano się pokazać jak fałszywość kiczu, wyraża się w odniesieniu do prawdy i jej przemilczania. Źródła kiczu odszukujemy bowiem w języku, w związku z językowym charakterem ludzkiego myślenia. W ujęciu hermeneutyki filozoficznej jawi się on jako sposób biernego bycia. Poprzez przemilczenie treści pomija się istotę wypowiedzi. Kicz jest, wobec tego wyrazem nie stylu, ale postawy.
The article concerns the question of how kitsch is constituted. H.-G. Gadamer approach has been taken to describe examples of kitsch in the field of art and in everyday life. The author defines kitsch as falsehood and find its source in language. The falseness of kitsch is expressed in relation to the truth. Such separation from it could be called concealment. It is an expression of human passivity.

Contemporary cultural phenomenon and the type of their receipt uncover that applied up to now ideas are faulty. More and more we have to do witch texts that their receivers do not pay attention to signs and values but to sensual qualities. “Return to things” and “neomaterialism” are popular slogans in contemporary humanities but without conviction that it means necessity of resignation prevailing foundations (for ex. understanding or interpretation) and forces us to acceptation rather naturalistic ideas. Describe of enterprises which are popular on rural and in small towns in Poland shows us that this change is important and unavoidable.

Abstract: Th e article concerns employees’ situation on the contemporary labour market. In particular, the essence of changes in work environment and the competences necessary to carry them out were characterized. Subsequently, the attention was focused on the employees’ confusion in the face of technological and organizational changes and on the conditions enabling the understanding of the goals and consequences of these changes. A separate place is devoted to the considerations on the ways of reacting to the changes occurring.
Streszczenie: Artykuł jest poświęcony sytuacji pracowników na współczesnym rynku pracy. W szczególności scharakteryzowano istotę zmian w środowisku pracy oraz niezbędne do ich przeprowadzenia kompetencje. W dalszej kolejności skoncentrowano uwagę na zagubieniu pracowników w obliczu zmian technologicznych i organizacyjnych oraz na warunkach umożliwiających zrozumienie celów i konsekwencji tych zmian. Osobne miejsce zajmują rozważania na temat sposobów reakcji – zareagowania na występujące zmiany.

In this article, I am going to discuss the issues of triggering children’s understanding of natural concepts (on the example of the concept of time) in a cultural context. I was particularly interested in the resources provided by culture to help children understand natural concepts. In the research, I applied the basic types of procedures for collecting qualitative data: observation (observer-as-participant), interview (direct, personal, focused), documents (children’s products) and audiovisual materials (audio and video recordings). The didactic intervention activity was conducted in two second grade and two third grade classes in primary schools in metropolitan environment. The reconstruction of the children’s understanding of the concept of natural time revealed its complexity. For children there is not one time, but many dimensions of time entered in two profiles: physical time (clock) and psychological time (time of memories and perceptions). Based on my research, I see the need for triggering the cognitive activity of pupils in conditions that ensure the development of conceptual systems containing both matrix concepts and natural notions.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przybliżenie wybranych cech umów międzynarodowych oraz Memorandum of Understanding. Artykuł przedstawia ogólną charakterystykę umów międzynarodowych oraz terminologię używaną w obu rodzajach tych dokumentów. Autorka wyjaśnia znaczenie oraz podaje możliwe rodzaje zastosowania Memorandum of Understanding w zestawieniu z standardowymi umowam międzynarodowymi. Niniejszy artykuł wskazuje również na podobieństwa pomiędzy tymi rodzajami dokumentów, które prowadzić mogą do wielu nieporozumień pomiędzy zawierającymi je stronami. Wskazane są również różnice, których celem jest wyznaczenie właściwego kierunku w trakcie pracy nad tworzeniem tego rodzaju dokumentów. Autorka zwraca również uwagę na możliwe zagrożenia wynikające z niewłaściwie użytego słownictwa w tego rodzaju dokumentach.
The article aims at characterizing selected features of the international agreements andMemorandum of Understanding. It presents general characteristic of agreements and terminologyused in both types of these kinds of documents. The author has explained the meaning and themain aim of using the Memorandum of Understanding instead of the standard internationalagreements. This article indicates the similarities between both of these documents resulting inmany misunderstandings between parties to such agreements. It also presents the differencesbetween them in order to show the right direction while drafting such documents. The author hasalso presented the consequences that may appear when the specified terminology is not followed.

Opis:
The discovery of mirror neurons and the characterization of their response properties is certainly an important achievement in neurophysiology and cognitive neuroscience. The reference to the role of mirror neurons in ‘reading’ the intentions of other creatures and in the learning process fulfils an explanatory function in understanding many cognitive phenomena beginning from imitating, towards understanding, and finishing with complex social interactions. The focus of this paper is to review selected approaches to the role of mirror neurons in mental activity as understanding, and to conclude with some possible implications for researches on mirror neurons for philosophical theories of understanding.

Für Martin Luther ist allein die Heilige Schrift Grundlage des christlichen Glaubens – „Sola scripura“ – nicht die Tradition der Kirche, der er sehr kritisch gegenüberstand. Grundlegend war für ihn dabei „sein Verständnis von Christus und sein Verständnis paulinischer Rechtfertigungsbotschaft “. Das Lesen und Hören der biblischen Texte hatte auf ihn eine befreiende Wirkung. Die Gefahr dabei ist, dass dies exklusiv verstanden werden könnte, und die Bedeutung der Glaubensgeschichte Israels für die christliche Bibelauslegung ausgeblendet wird, wie es bei Martin Luther der Fall war. Er stellte sich sehr scharf gegen die jüdische Auslegung, da deren Sichtweise auf die Texte des Ersten Testaments, seiner Meinung nach das Verständnis der Heilsbotschaft bzw. die Christusbotschaft des Ersten Testaments verdunkeln würden. Die Befreiungserfahrung in der Verkündigung des Evangeliums ist zuerst die Fokussierung des Heilshandels Gottes, das weder exklusiv noch inklusiv zu verstehen ist, sondern kommunikativ-dialogisch. Hier ist nicht entscheidend, welche Religionszugehörigkeit letztlich mitgebracht wird, sondern allein das auf Gott Vertrauenkönnen wie Abraham.
Martin Luther was pretty much in opposition to traditions of the church. Th is is because he took the Scripture as sole foundation and basis for (his) Christian faith – “sola scriptura”. “His understanding of Christ as well as his understanding of Paul’s doctrine of justifi cation” was of central importance for Luther. Reading the Bible and listening to biblical texts had releasing and liberating effects on him. Yet, people have to be aware of the danger that these scriptural texts can be interpreted exclusively in a way that one forgets about the meaning of Israel’s history and faith for Christianity. Th at was one of Martin Luther’s great misunderstandings. He was in opposition to the Jewish exegesis because he thought that this could have clouded the believer’s perspective on the Jesus’ message of salvation as well as on the message of Christ as revealed in the First Testament. Experiencing liberation through the proclamation of the Gospel fi rst of all implies the focus on God’s saving work. Th is again should neither be understood exclusively nor inclusively but in a communicative and dialogic form. It is not important which religious denomination people belong to, but rather that they can trust God like Abraham did.

The essay undertakes to investigate the phenomenon of erotic friendship as an “intertextual friendship” and, at the same time, “somatic (mis) understanding” (German: Un-beziehung). The following considerations include a discussion on the relationship between Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, viewed first of all as bohemian characters of bohemian life and the protagonists of the mitologised homo-erotic relationship. Beside a hermeneutic attempt at describing the intimacy shared by both poets, or stages in the development of their intimate relations (with reference to French literature of the subject and texts that have not yet been translated into Polish), the author writes extensively on the reception of the relationship of the legendary pair of friends-lovers A-war period, Agnieszka Holland’s film Total eclipse and the most recent poetical texts by Ewa Sonnenberg. The essay is complemented by some considerations on similar cases, analogous to the instance of the relationship between the two French poets: epistolary romance between R.M. Rilke and M. Tsvetaeva and, important within the context of the reception of Rimbaud in Poland — love/friendship exhibited in the letters between Andrzej Czajkowski and Anita Janowska.

The extent of Heidegger’s crucial influence on Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics became fully visible only relatively recently with the discovery of the young Heidegger. Early Heidegger’s hermeneutics of facticity as an attempt to understand human existence had a profound impact on Gadamer. Gadamer’s hermeneutics opens up the horizon of mediation between the manifestation of Being and human understanding. Language, as the mediation between human beings and the world, discloses their original belonging together: In itself, the word is mediation; the word mediates itself. Gadamer’s radicalization of Heidegger’s question of Being leads him to the fundamental question of human understanding.

W tym artykule analizujemy trudności studentów matematyki w przejściuod rozumienia trapezu jako czworoboku posiadającego dwie podstawy różnejdługości do ujęcia zgodnego z jego formalną definicją. Nasze badanie zostałoprzeprowadzone wśród 25 studentów – przyszłych nauczycieli matematyki. Wtrakcie studiów studenci ukończyli kurs „geometrii elementarnej”, który trwał2 semestry (60 godzin wykładów i 60 godzin ćwiczeń). Celem tego kursu było,między innymi, zapoznanie studentów z podstawowymi pojęciami geometrycznymiz wyższego stanowiska i przygotowanie ich do rozumienia roli definicjiw nadawaniu formalnego znaczenia pojęciom matematycznym. Ci sami studenci,po pewnym czasie, w ramach zajęć z dydaktyki matematyki otrzymalikilka opisów niektórych pojęć geometrycznych (między innymi – trapezu) a ichzadaniem było ocenienie, czy te opisy można uznać za poprawne definicje. Dodatkowo,w przypadku opisów niepoprawnych mieli wskazać na czym polegabłąd i starać się go usunąć. Badania pokazały, że studenci reagowali dwutorowo:nie mieli problemu z rozpoznaniem tej definicji, którą analizowali jakowzorcową podczas zajęć z geometrii, i z uznaniem jej jako poprawnej. Z drugiejstrony, ich próby naprawy opisów odbiegających od poprawnej definicjibyły najczęściej zgodne z szeroko rozumianym obrazem pojęcia, często stowarzyszonymz własnościami figury, a nie z jego definicją. To wyobrażenie byłododatkowo zdominowane przez prototypowe zrozumienie trapezu jako czworokątaposiadającego dwie podstawy – w tym ujęciu „podstawy” były utożsamiane„z dokładnie jedną parą boków równoległych”. W artykule zostaładodatkowo przedstawiona skrótowa analiza szkolnych opracowań dotyczącychprezentacji pojęcia trapezu. Na tej podstawie można stwierdzić, że obraz pojęcia„trapez” reprezentowany przez badanych studentów jest ściśle powiązany ztymi prototypowymi reprezentacjami, prezentowanymi w podręcznikach. Wynikibadań sugerują, że wczesne intuicje, wzmacniane pierwotnymi szkolnymireprezentacjami pojęcia są bardzo stabilne i odporne na asymilację wczesnychujęć w ramy szerszych znaczeń. Takie wyniki mogą wyjaśniać niektóre trudnościdotyczące niewłaściwych intuicji związanych z pojęciami geometrycznymi.W związku z tym sugerują potrzebę bardzo wyważonego, długoterminowegoplanowania nauczania matematyki, w którym wprowadzane intuicyjnie pojęciana niższych szczeblach edukacyjnych nie będą blokować tego rozumienia,które w przyszłości będzie funkcjonować w matematyce ujmowanej formalnie.

The 2.0 law has come into force. However, its effects will be determined by the methods of its implementation by the staff of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the authorities of Higher Education Institutions in Poland and academics dealing with science and arts. Achieving a consensus that satisfies all parties requires cooperation, openness to others, as well as work on the development of cooperation itself. The aim of the article is to emphasize the development of cooperation, which, according to the author, should be conditioned by “research in action”. Therefore, drawing attention to the elements of this structure, taking into account the “historical consciousness”, embedding these activities in the phronesis and developing the forms of understanding included in it, should be the foundations of an interpretation of the 2.0 law. However, the interpretation of this law will prove more friendly (useful) for the interested parties themselves, if the research in action will take into account the general idea of praxis.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is conceptualized as a personality trait or an ability. Most of conducted studies on EI-coping association referred to trait emotional intelligence. Therefore, the role of ability emotional intelligence is less clear and need to be further studied. The present study examined the relationship between two EI abilities (emotion recognizing and emotion understanding) and stress coping strategies in adolescent men and women. The data were collected from 1033 Polish high school students (520 men and 512 women) aged 18-20 years (Mage = 18.46 years). Coping strategies were assessed using the COPE inventory and emotional abilities were measured using the Emotional Intelligence Scale – Faces (SIE-T) and the Emotion Understanding Test (TRE). The results supported the existence of an association between EI abilities and coping strategies. The analyses of the interaction effects revealed the moderating role of gender on some of the relationships between EI abilities and coping strategies.

A qualitative study was carried out to survey attitudes towards and feelings associated with verbal irony among gelotophobes and nongelotophobes (gelotophobia denoting the fear of being laughed at). Sixty-one people (13 gelotophobes) were surveyed using an open-ended online questionnaire. An inductive, manifest content analysis was carried out. The analysis distinguished that non-gelotophobes treat verbal irony as a skillful way of drawing attention to absurdity. Irony was also often seen as a personal quality rather than a linguistic form. Concerns with recognizing irony appeared very rarely. In contrast, the gelotophobes’ responses displayed a more negative and one-sided attitude towards irony, describing it mostly as a way to put down and insult. These findings, though obtained in a general exploration, present a perspective complementary to that seen in linguistic and psycholinguistic literature as they draw attention to matters of personal experience of irony use. Additionally, the study’s methodological limitations and further directions for research are discussed.

The reception of theatric plays by the young viewer (an example of which can be found in the discussion after the student's premiere of Acropolis directed by Łukasz Twardowski) reveals the need to expand the theatric education with the elements of the post-war tradition of the Polish scene. The example of the cultural gap in this regard can be heard in e.g. the voices of young critics on the re-mix on Lidia Zamkow, which show the lack of knowledge on the meaning of the cultural phenomenon, which was the theatre of that director. Implementing the subject, the main aim of which would be to familiarize the students with great personas of the theatre of the last five decades into the cultural studies curriculum seems absolutely necessary if one wants to raise an aware member of the culture – also the post-modernist one

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present a way of understanding the time by junior high school students. The basis of the research are the surveys of 15-year-olds from Lublin regarding the title issue. The paper is divided into three parts – I start with the approximation of such notions as understanding and time, based on the literature of philosophy, pedagogy, psychology, linguistics. Respondents generally have negative associations with the category discussed in the paper, are aware of time’s transience and evanescence, which is reflected in definitions created by them. The last part is a presentation of an in-depth understanding of time. Here, I analyze essays on the subject: Time flows independently of us, but the way it is managed depends on every human being. Students mainly refer to their personal experiences and thoughts, arguments regarding  iterature constitute a decided minority.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie sposobu rozumienia czasu przez młodzież gimnazjalną. Podstawę badań stanowią wypowiedzi ankietowe lubelskich piętnastolatków dotyczące tytułowego zagadnienia. Pracę dzielę na trzy części – rozpoczynam od przybliżenia pojęć: rozumienie oraz czas, opierając się na literaturze z zakresu filozofii, pedagogiki, psychologii, językoznawstwa. W części centralnej stwierdzam, iż respondenci na ogół posiadają negatywne skojarzenia z omawianą w szkicu kategorią, są świadomi jej ulotności i przemijalności, co znajduje wyraz w tworzonych przez nich – najczęściej poprawnych – definicjach. Ostatnią część stanowi przedstawienie pogłębionego rozumienia czasu. Analizuję w niej rozprawki na temat: Czas płynie niezależnie od nas, ale sposób jego zagospodarowania zależy już od każdego człowieka. Uczniowie powołują się w nich głównie na osobiste doświadczenia i przemyślenia, argumenty dotyczące literatury stanowią zdecydowaną mniejszość.

Relation between executive functions and theory of mind in the light of microgenetic approachResearch of numerous international and Polish development psychologists (Carlson and Moses, 2001; Hughes, 1998; Perner and Lang, 2002; Perner, 1998; Skórska, 2004; Putko, 2004; 2008; Kielar-Turska, Białecka-Pikul and Skórska, 2006; Bazak, 2009) point to a relation between executive functions (EF) and a theory of mind (ToM). Character of this relation is subject to research and scientific disputes (Putko, 2008), but the relation remains hypothetical. Presented research concerns the relation between EF and ToM in children aged 3 to 4 i.e. the period during which both functions develop. Microgenetic approach was used to verify the hypothesis. Children with high and low level of EF were selected from 98 children aged between 3;9 and 4;3. In 10 meetings, participants were solving several types of tasks measuring ToM. Subsequently, the measurement of EF was re-performed. Results of the research confi rm the relation between EF and ToM. Besides, microgenetic approach has made it possible to observe that children aged between 3 and 4 characterised by different levels of EF development differ in acquiring abilities of mental states understanding in other people.

Music education through audiation consists of two processes: 1) informal direction developing subjective sense of tonality and meter, which takes place at home and nursery on the basis of intuition and learning how to audiate things; 2) formal teaching in school in order to develop a sense of objective tonality and meter, in which the emphasis is on understanding and mastering of how things should be audiated. Aesthetics is a general theory of art, a science of: 1) social and psychological sources of the formation of art and views on it; 2) social function of art and its development; 3) evaluation criteria for items in terms of their beauty; 4) historical development of the criteria of beauty. The article poses the question of whether music education is based on the assumptions of the theory of learning music by Gordon combined with aesthetic education in terms of Lissa. The purpose of music education and art education is to develop interests and needs of one’s own experience of artistic expression in an imitative and creative activity in various forms. There were attempts of showing that aesthetic education is a natural consequence of implementation of music education based on learning theory and it was suggested to combine learning theory with aesthetic music education due to a common area of interest – dealing with the so-called aesthetic situations, and in the framework of the creator, the creative process, the work of art, listener, process, perception of art and aesthetic values. Remarks by Gordon and Lissa are consistent, intriguing and useful to create a music curriculum.

The article reveals the actual problem of understanding and reception of the translation of a literary work in the context of Belarusian-Russian bilingualism with the dominant use of the Russian language. Although the translation in a bilingual context often helps readers to understand better, it can also hinder the reception when bilingual readers comparing both texts are not satisfied with translation. It is not possible to establish general limitations on account of the variability of both understanding and subsequent creation of the work which is by nature subjective and ambiguous. Not only should translators have a thorough knowledge of the language of the original work but they also are expected to know social-cultural conditions of the society for whom they translate.

This paper presents empirical research concerning Slovenian and Hungarian young learners’ (7–11 years of age) travel experiences, perceptions, and beliefs about their neighbouring countries (Austria, Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia) and their citizens in order to enhance effective cross-border institutional cooperation. A non-random sample of young learners (n=200) from Slovenian and Hungarian primary schools in the border area participated in the study. The results highlight that young learners’ personal contacts with local people and travel events develop positive perceptions and understanding of their neighbouring national groups. Young learners also perceive socio-economic inequalities, however their knowledge of neighbouring languages is the key element in developing their awareness of and positive attitudes to cross-border cooperation.

The presented article was an attempt to explore the differential concept building by teaching students of the elementary level through activity-based instruction. An experiment was conducted in a public sector secondary school on students of grade 6 in teaching of social studies. The major finding of the current showed that concept building was made easier and understandable by teaching students with the use of activity-based instruction as compared to lecture-based instruction in teaching of social studies. It was further explored that the academic achievement of students taught with the use of activity-based instruction was significantly better than that of students taught with the use of lecture-based instruction. Therefore, it was suggested that the effects of activity-based instruction can be investigated by teaching other subjects using this method and teachers may be trained in how to teach their respective subjects with the use of the activity-based teaching method.

Idea układu z Schengen narodziła się w Saarbrucken, gdzie Francja i Niemcy podpisały porozumienie ułatwiające ich obywatelom przekraczanie wspólnej granicy. Pomysł ten został zaakceptowany w krajach Beneluksu, które do niego dołączyły. W 1995 r. do porozumienia przystąpiły Hiszpania i Portugalia. Natomiast status obserwatora uzyskały Grecja, Austria, Włochy, Norwegia, Szwecja, Finlandia, Dania i Islandia. Rzeczpospolita Polska przystąpiła do Układu z Schengen 21 grudnia 2007 r. Niniejszy materiał będzie częściowo odpowiedzią na często zadawane pytanie: Jaki jest wpływ rozwiązań z Schengen na codzienne życie obywateli. Jest to umowa znosząca kontrolę osób przekraczających granice między państwami członkowskimi tej umowy. Konsekwencją porozumienia było rozszerzenie współpracy w zakresie bezpieczeństwa granic, polityki azylowej i współpracy transgranicznej.
The idea of the Schengen agreement was born in Saarbrucken, where France and Germany signed an agreement to make it easier for their citizens to cross the common border. This idea was accepted in the Benelux countries that joined it. In 1995. Spain and Portugal joined the agreement. In contrast, Greece, Austria, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland have obtained observer status. The Republic of Poland entered the Schengen Agreement on December 21, 2007. This material will partially answer a frequently asked question: What is the impact of the Schengen solution on the everyday life of citizens. It is an agreement abolishing checks on persons crossing the borders between the member states of this agreement. The consequence of the agreement was the expansion of cooperation in the field of border security, asylum policy and cross-border cooperation.

W artykule została poddana ocenie monografia Krytyka hermeneutycznego rozumu. Preliminaria Andrzeja Przyłębskiego (Universitas, Kraków 2016). Autor porządkuje swój wywód wokół trzech celów. 1) omówienie głównych tez przedstawionych w książce; 2) przedstawienie je w szerszym kontekście współczesnej hermeneutyki oraz 3) zainicjowanie dyskusji nad problematyką filozofii hermeneutyki, jej statusem i podstawami teoretycznymi. W rozważaniach został położony nacisk na sposoby definiowania relacji między rozumieniem a wyjaśnieniem (ze względu na ich dialektyczne powiązania).
The paper presents a critical approach to Krytyka hermeneutycznego rozumu. Preliminaria by Andrzej Przyłębski (Universitas, Cracow 2016). It aims to:1) discuss the main theses presented in the book; 2) depict them in a larger context of contemporary hermeneutics and 3) start a discussion over the issues of hermeneutic philosophy, its status and theoretical background. The article emphasizes the manners of defining relations between understanding and explaining (due to their dialectic connections).

The author assumed that a fair understanding of communication is such a reception which is close to the content, intent and mode assigned to it by the sender. That reception depends on the extent of the knowledge of a recipient, and their axiological attitude and view of the world. The analysed examples indicate various aspects of fairness of understanding and trigger questions regarding the method of studying the phenomenon.
Autorka przyjmuje, że rzetelne rozumienie przekazu to taki odbiór, który jest bliski treści, intencji i sposobowi nadanym przekazowi przez nadawcę. Odbiór ten uwarunkowany jest stopniem wiedzy odbiorcy oraz jego postawą aksjologiczną i wizją świata. Analizowane przykłady pokazują różne aspekty rzetelności rozumienia oraz skłaniają do pytań o metodę badania opisywanego zjawiska.

Qualitative research aims at unwrapping the ordinary and the exceptional in order to bring us closer to a complete description and interpretation of life. People’s narratives are particularly effective in revealing deeper dimensions of experience and of meaning. Narratives always need to be read against the background of the empirical reality in which they are embedded. Most of the narratives referred to in this article are situated against the empirical reality of South Africa as a society in transition, still marred by inequality and inequity. One narrative, from a project conducted in the Czech Republic, shares some contextual characteristics with the South African examples—the Czech Republic is also a society in transition, previously employing institutional violence to suppress political dissent. An important aspect when dealing with intense political and social transformation is the presence of highly charged feelings and emotions. As part of the contextualization for this article I briefly argue that the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (1996-1998) in many ways did the groundwork for a new appreciation of the sharing of emotional accounts and revelations pertaining to atrocities, injustices, and suffering. This Commission’s work prepared the way for recognition of the potential of such sharing to create a better understanding of the experience of life in a deeply divided context. In the article, I argue for the establishment of a social encounter—a concept frequently used in the micro-sociological writings of Randall Collins—between researcher and research participant in an attempt to come to deeper levels of understanding. During episodes of emotional sharing of experiences and feelings a research participant often reveals deeper levels of social interaction—these revelations have the potential to open the way for a hermeneutical process towards understanding. Dramatic recall can lead to reconstructing a story that contains all the elements of what was originally heard, seen, and felt. The article uses five examples of narratives containing moments of high levels of emotion—each example opening the way for better understanding of the experiences of the research participants.

Specyficzny dialog zachodzi w relacji wychowawca- wychowanek .Wymaga on wzajemnej otwartości. Egzemplifikacją ludzkiego dialogu jest ten, który dzieje się między teatralnymi postaciami. Przedmiotem niniejszego tekstu jest analiza kwestii otwartości na inne osoby, na inne sposoby myślenia, czyli problem warunków niezbędnych do zaistnienia twórczego dialogu (w różnych jego odmianach) na teatralnej scenie.
Dialogue as an exchange of thoughts between two people assumes equality and respect of partner views. In the assumptions of the I-YOU dialogue, the views of Janusz Tarnowski, Józef Tischner, Jarosław Gary and Martin Buber were quoted. The specific dialogue takes place in the relationship of the educator-pupil. It requires mutual openness. The exemplification of human dialogue is the one that happens between theatrical figures. The subject of this text is to analyze the issue of openness to other people, to other ways of thinking, that is the problem of the conditions necessary for the creation of a creative dialogue (in its variations) on the theatrical stage.

The assumptions of the own research presented in the article refer to the socio-interactive approach that assumes that learning and proper language acquisition by a child require cognitive activity, proper progress in cognitive development, and active - resulting from social relations - observation of adult speech. The research assumptions also take into account the importance of the autoregulatory function of language and systemic understanding of the concept of family. The aim of the study was to check the presence of the relationship between speech understanding by children with delayed verbal development and the various dimensions of their family functioning and ego-resiliency of parents. The study included a group of 72 well-cognitively functioning Polish children aged 5-7 with a diagnosis of delayed verbal development and their families selected using random and nonprobability sampling. The children were examined using the Polish Picture Vocabulary Test – Comprehension - version A (PPVT-C). Functioning of the families of the examined children was operationalized by the results of FACES IV by D. Olson (the Polish version of the scale was used); while the Ego Resiliency Scale was used to study resilience. The results of the conducted research indicate, among others, that families of children with lower scores on speech understanding present less favorable functioning profiles in the scope of selected dimensions of FACES -IV: Family Communication, Cohesion, Disengaged and Family Satisfaction. However, the relationship between the child's understanding of speech and other demographic variables such as parent's age, parent's gender, parent's education, marital status has not been confirmed. It was recognized that the results of the research will allow in the future to optimize the therapeutic services offered to children with verbal development disorders and their families in their natural environment, as well as to allow the presentation of appropriate strategies to support speech development (especially speech understanding abilities) in children. The creation of a group representing a certain type of language disorder will allow a better adaptation of the training program to the specific difficulties experienced by a child, as well as allow for more effective involvement of parents in preventive measures.

W ramach rozpowszechnionej tendencji do nieskrępowanego łączenia paradygmatów z czasem pojawił się także, częściowo opozycyjny wobec niego, nurt zmierzający do łączenia elementów humanistyki i nauk przyrodniczych, w szczególności rozumienia i wyjaśniania. Nie reprezentuje on jednak znanej z historii tendencji do podporządkowania humanitas wymogom scientia, lecz szuka nowej równowagi pomiędzy nimi i teoretycznych podstaw do integracji pozwalającej na wytwarzanie bardziej ugruntowanej wiedzy, a także umożliwiającej lepsze przewidywanie i refleksyjną kontrolę życia społecznego. Jest to zadanie szczególnie istotne w sytuacji późnonowoczesnego dynamicznego rozrostu coraz bardziej złożonych systemów społeczno-technologiczno-ekologicznych generujących nowe ryzyka i możliwości. W eseju, za pomocą narzędzi z obszaru analizy dyskursu i socjologii oraz filozofii wiedzy, zostaje podjęta analiza kilku kluczowych teoretycznych założeń, na których może być ufundowana integracja. Przedstawiono również propozycję połączenia procedury interpretacji i wyjaśniania w koncepcji „maksymalnej interpretacji”, a także próbę wyjaśnienia tendencji, która ją zrodziła i jej interpretacji w kategoriach teorii kulturowej Mary Douglas.
For the two last decades cultural social sciences have been facing critical methodological transformation. The widespread tendency in qualitative research to mingling and synthesizing differing interpretive paradigms has been recently confronted with a venture to integration of science and the humanities. This current is not a plain revitalization of historical tendency to submit interpretive methods to scientific explanation of social life, but is seeking a new theoretical base to establish a balance between hermeneutic and causal analysis. This essay discusses different theoretical concepts of the relationship between hermeneutic interpretation and causal explanation. It introduces a concept of “maximal interpretation” devised inside the strong program of cultural sociology as a procedure of unified interpretive-causal analysis of historical events, and analyzes this innovation with theoretical lenses of grid-group theory.

Celem artykułu jest dokonanie analizy hermeneutyki dyskursu, zarysowanej przez Paula Ricoeura w Teorii interpretacji, oraz zestawienie związanych z nią wątków z zagadnieniami, które w swojej filozofii poruszał Hans-Georg Gadamer. Ricoeur w swoim dziele ukazuje interpretację jako dialektyczny proces przebiegający od naiwnego rozumienia do wyjaśniania, a następnie od wyjaśniania do rozumienia pogłębionego. Na każdym z tych trzech etapów pojawiają się problemy, z którymi Gadamer zmagał się kilkanaście lat wcześniej w Prawdzie i metodzie. To jednak koncepcja Ricoeura będzie dla mnie punktem wyjścia, gdyż zagadnienie interpretacji jest w niej przedstawione w systematyczny i uporządkowany sposób, natomiast analogiczne wątki dotyczące interpretacji, które możemy odnaleźć u Gadamera, są rozmieszczone w wielu pracach oraz często przeplatają się z zagadnieniami niedotyczącymi wprost samego fenomenu rozumienia.
The article aims to analyze the hermeneutics of discourse outlined by Paul Ricoeur in his Interpretation Theory, and to compare the themes  related to it with the issues raised by Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophy. In his work, Ricoeur presents interpretation as a dialectical process going from naive understanding to explanation, and then from explanation to a deeper understanding. At each of these three stages, some problems arise with which Gadamer had struggled several years earlier in his Truth and Method. However, it is Ricoeur’s concept that will be the starting point for the author  as it displays the issue of interpretation in a systematic and orderly manner, while analogous themes  regarding interpretation which can be found in Gadamer, are distributed among many of his works and are often intertwined with issues not directly related to the phenomenon of understanding itself.

The aim of the article is to define the methodological status of the proposed new sub-discipline of political sciences – the political science of religion (politology of religion). The diagram of naturalism adopted in the text indicates the choice of the perspective of cognition for an alliance of religions and politics as a single social and political phenomenon. The position expressed in the text aims to find a common knowledge base for the two most important social phenomena. The presented postulate takes into account the combination of knowledge in the field of political sciences and theology, sociology of religion, religiousness or history with the classical methodology of sciences, characteristic for mathematical natural science.
Celem artykułu jest próba określenia metodologicznego statusu postulowanej nowej subdyscypliny nauk o polityce – politologii religii. Przyjęty w tekście schemat rozumiejącego naturalizmu wskazuje wybór perspektywy poznania dla sojuszu religii i polityki jako jednego zjawiska społecznego-politycznego. Stanowisko wyrażone w tekście zmierza do znalezienia wspólnej płaszczyzny wiedzy dla dwóch najważniejszych zjawisk społecznych. Zaprezentowany postulat uwzględnia łączenie wiedzy z zakresu nauk o polityce oraz teologii, socjologii religii, religioznawstwa czy historii z klasyczną metodologią nauk, charakterystyczną dla zmatematyzowanego przyrodoznawstwa.

This paper focuses on the practices between parent and child firms in corporate spinoffs. We uncover the enacted aspects of knowledge, called knowing, through theories from seven cases of incumbent-backed spin-offs and find that the management of the parent firms are highly involved in the spin-offs. The practices associated with spinning off are solving problems, involving multidisciplinary expertise and entrepreneuring management at the parent firm. We contribute to the spin-off literature by discussing the knowledge required for successfully spinning off child firms and to practice theory by empirically uncovering the practical understanding involved in the origin and perpetuation of an organization.

The paper discusses the chosen ongoing perspectives related to science understanding based problems. Science is viewed, following Robert Merton, as a functioning institution. Social context plays a significant role in defining the possibilities of developing science. The question arises how a functioning institution can be effectively analyzed and which perspectives can be implemented. Hence this paper’s goal is to reveal some ways of exploring science understanding. Consequently the paper touches the scientific discourses upon science discussing its academic functional ethos and on the other hand tension between bureaucratization and openness in science. More broadly how far science is democratized in an academic interaction. The proposition of examining the problem of the quality of science as an institution is to grasp two perspectives: first, the formal perspective, related to the legal field and its rationality and second, followed by Adele Clarke known as “situatedness”. The idea of joining formalization with situatedness can be regarded as an embodiment within John Meyer and Brian Rowan’s concept of an institutionalized organization. Hence science understanding is defined as a complex functioning institution escaping from a modern version of science into many postmodern ad-hoc made sciences. Over the centuries, mankind has undergone a great revolution, but not before the pace of change was not as deep and fast as it is now. The process of globalization, the disappearance of borders, integration of the countries of Europe, the growing number of multi-ethnic states that the process of unification in the economy and the occurrence of different values underlines the importance of multiculturalism. For centuries, different cultures mutually displaced, destroy, seek to dominate and expansion and single action aimed at mutual understanding were not effective. But a different world is possible. Lead to a different way in the economy, politics but also and above all in the culture. And it is intercultural education has lead to the understanding of cultural differences – from the subcultures in their own communities to the culture of remote communities, prepare to interact and strengthen their own identity. Cooperation with representatives of the different cultures of the global world is a very important and responsible task for the modern system of education aimed at preparing the public to new challenges. They consist in building a global culture, to deepen their own identity of individuals, groups and communities by promoting tolerance and dialogue, because of globalization, despite the trend towards integration and unification of people from all over the world, our actions and choices are determined by history, tradition and the culture in which we were raised and grew up. Intercultural education includes a dialogue, so that creates a culture that results in contact with others. This dialogue is the basis of all culture and dialogue is a way to co-existence of cultures and intercultural education and dialogue is a service to the dignity of man.

In this paper, a novel neural network is proposed, which can automatically learn and recall contents from texts, and answer questions about the contents in either a large corpus or a short piece of text. The proposed neural network combines parse trees, semantic networks, and inference models. It contains layers corresponding to sentences, clauses, phrases, words and synonym sets. The neurons in the phrase-layer and the word-layer are labeled with their part-of-speeches and their semantic roles. The proposed neural network is automatically organized to represent the contents in a given text. Its carefully designed structure and algorithms make it able to take advantage of the labels and neurons of synonym sets to build the relationship between the sentences about similar things. The experiments show that the proposed neural network with the labels and the synonym sets has the better performance than the others that do not have the labels or the synonym sets while the other parts and the algorithms are the same. The proposed neural network also shows its ability to tolerate noise, to answer factoid questions, and to solve single-choice questions in an exercise book for non-native English learners in the experiments.

In this article we present results of research aiming at describing the strategies used by 10-year-old children while solving one geometric task. The research was lead through three different stages. In May 2015 the Educational Research Institute in Poland carried out a survey titled Competences Of Third Grades. One task, related to the domain "the geometric imagination", solved by 199 361 students, achieved a low degree of solvability, also among students achieving good results in other educational domains. To identify the strategy for solving this task, about 3000 submitted solutions were reviewed. One of them was based on imagination of action. We were interested to which extent such dynamic thinking is present in children's solutions, therefore, in the next stage, individual observations of a child working on this task were carried out. 35 children aged 10 years participated in this stage. The results of all stages are briefly presented in this study, with particular attention to the result of the third stage. This last stage supports our opinion that dynamic reasoning is possible to trigger, but requires special teaching methodology and specially designed tasks.

Zastosowane metody badawcze to analiza polegająca na wyodrębnieniu istotnych, dla podjętego celu, pojęć i kategorii (analiza porównawcza) oraz odczytaniu ich sensu i znaczenia w kontekście przyjętej problematyki badawczej (analiza treści) z zastosowaniem elementów metody wglądu fenomenologicznego i elementów hermeneutyki filozoficznej. PROCES WYWODU: Wskazane przez wybranych autorów drogi stanowią możliwości sprzyjające odnajdywaniu siebie, a tym samym swojego miejsca w świecie w poczuciu sprawstwa i samostanowienia. Stanowią one pewne procesy i mechanizmy, które mogą i powinny inspirować do działań wychowawczych w duchu humanistyki. WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: Można je ująć w pięć kluczowych, niezbędnych/koniecznych w osiągnięciu wskazanego celu, kategorii, jakimi są: 1) narracja siebie i swoich aktywności (refleksja, autorefleksja, konwersacja wewnętrzna, dialog i wyobraźnia narracyjna); 2) stawianie sobie pytania o sens bycia w świecie w poczuciu autentyczności; 3) rozumienie siebie i otaczającej rzeczywistości; 4) odpowiedzialność za własne myślenie, mówienie, rozumienie i działanie; 5) zaangażowanie w rozwój osobisty i społeczny, zajmowanie stanowiska (świadomy sposób bycia w świecie). WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE, REKOMENDACJE: Stanowią one odczytane inspiracje, takie jak budzenie, poruszanie, wstrząsanie ku przemianie, ku lepszemu byciu sobą, ku rozwojowi w procesie wychowania. To działania (praxis) tworzą świadomość i tożsamość siebie, wyznaczając miejsce w świecie, dlatego wychowanie winno być sztuką życia odpowiedzialnego i satysfakcjonującego.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the undertaken analyzes is to indicate coherent – in their significance and meaning, although variously defined – ways and processes read as educational inspirations flowing from the discussed authors. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem is to realize the possibilities of managing your life, to experience responsible agency in your activities in various spheres of human life. The research methods used constitute an analysis isolating the concepts and categories relevant for our purpose (comparative analysis) and reading their sense and meaning in the context of the adopted research issues (content analysis) using elements of the method phenomenological insight and elements of philosophical hermeneutics. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The paths indicated by selected authors are opportunities for finding yourself and thus your place in the world in a sense of agency and self-determination. They constitute certain processes and mechanisms that can and should inspire to educational activities in the spirit of humanities. RESEARCH RESULTS: They can be included in five key categories necessary to achieve the indicated goal, which are: narrative of yourself and your activities (reflection, self-reflection, internal conversation, dialogue and narrative imagination); asking yourself questions about the sense of being in the world in a sense of authenticity; understanding of yourself and the surrounding reality; responsibility for your own thinking, speaking, understanding and acting; commitment to personal and social development, taking a position (a conscious way of being in the world).CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: They are read inspirations such as waking up, moving, shaking to change, to be better yourself, to develop in the process of education. It is actions (praxis) that create self-awareness and identity by defining a place in the world, which is why education should be the art of a responsible and satisfying life.

By bringing people closer together, the phenomenon of globalisation not only accentuates differences but also it reinforces the sense of identity and belonging. This paradoxical and dynamic picture puts us straight before the challenge as to how to accommodate differences in order to live peacefully together. The gulf between “us” and “them” become more and more visible. The perception we can have of “others” remains deeply shaped by the values and precepts we learn in our respective cultural and educational circles. Yet, because men are not mere cultural products, individual responsibility and rational deliberation play an important role in the ways we approach “others.” In this article, we investigate prejudices as a phenomenon that is in the heart of above-mentioned issues. After a brief investigation into the nature of a prejudice, the paper outlines two main philosophical positions that either rehabilitate prejudices (Hans-Georg Gadamer) or calls for their abandonment (Descartes). The author argues that, despite the good arguments to be found in both positions, the nature of prejudices—as “something not yet knowledge”—puts upon us a kind of “moral and epistemological obligation” to overcome them, in order to do justice to ourselves and to our fellowmen, and construct sustainable and peaceful societies.

Autor zauważa, że lekkomyślne i barbarzyńskie zabójstwa niewinnych ludzi (muzułmanów i niemuzułmanów) mogą zostać powstrzymane poprzez podjęcie wysiłku porozumienia i pokojowego współistnienia. Zaleca model Proroka Mahometa, ukazujący tolerancję i pokojowe współistnienie jako wyjście z owych kryzysów i sposób na zaprowadzenie pokoju w społeczeństwie, gwarantującego zrównoważony rozwój.
The paper espouses the purpose of religion as designed for man by Allah and highlights the level of relationship between individuals and groups. Some religious crises recorded in the country that has led to wanton destruction of lives and properties are highlighted. The paper probes into causes of religious crises as well as misunderstanding between adherents of different faith that pose security challenges in the country, through analytic study. It laments that the reckless and barbaric killings of innocent people (Muslims and non-Muslims) could be averted through understanding and peaceful co-existence. The model of Prophet Muhammad on tolerance and peaceful co-existence is recommended as a way out of the challenges and a way of entrenching peaceful society which guarantee a sustainable development.

Brought out of silence is a category used by Smolińska-Theiss to present children’s narrations and dialogues about their everyday matters. They take the form of letters to God, to presidents, albums with children’s drawings, photos, children’s films, graffiti, posts and comments. Originally, they date back to Korczak’s studies. Our text is also an act of letting children speak and appreciating their comments and opinions. It is concerned with children’s understanding of the world. Defining the meaning of life by children is the key category here. We called it “a comparative study” due to the fact that we will present utterances by both Polish and Ukrainian children as the category “a meaning of life” may be interpreted differently in various cultural, political or social contexts. The research carried out both in Poland and abroad indicates that a child is a competent unit capable of making logical utterances with the content which shows deep understanding of the world. This text is based on the following theoretical studies: – thinking about a child originating in a postmodernist childhood paradigm as well as psychological constructivism; – the analysis of research material has been based on Judith Butler’s theory – Frames of War.

The article takes up an issue of the Humboldt’s idea of university in two perspectives. In the first part of the analysis, in reference to the Max Weber’s lecture Wissenschaft als Beruf, we present the reasons for the failure of the Humboldt’s program due to the changes in the structure and function of the science, which occurred in the 19th century. In the second part, however, we depict the transformation of Humboldt’s program that was carried out by Wilhelm Dilthey. His justifying of humanities (Geisteswissenschaften) has retained, from today’s perspective, its topicality. It can be demonstrated with the aid of investigations of Jürgen Habermas, Eva Illouz and Hans Joas. Dilthey’s solutions, which continue the Humboldtian tradition, can be used to define the role and tasks of the humanities in the contemporary education model based on the idea of lifelong learning.

Artykuł jest próbą prezentacji poglądów filozoficznych na pochodzenie ludzkiej zdolności interpretacji i rozumienia znaczeń. Autor inspiruje się wynikamy współczesnych nauk biologicznych, kognitywistycznych i psychologicznych, w świetle których można przeciwstawiać się koncepcjom hermeneutycznym, jakie tkwią w nowożytnej tradycji antropocentrycznej. Chciałbym zarysować wyjaśnienie statusu bytowego tzw. kompetencji hermeneutycznych w formie znaturalizowanej, która nie unika płynnego stopniowania struktur czy umiejętności podmiotowych bez popadania w trywialny redukcjonizm. Będę twierdził, że choć pełne ukształtowanie procesów rozumienia pozostaje zarezerwowane dla konkretnych grup spośród gatunku ludzkiego, to można racjonalnie uzasadnić, że u odmiennych gatunków zwierząt i bezpośrednich przodków człowieka mamy już do czynienia z elementami hermeneutycznych kompetencji, które legły u podstawy pojęcia Dasein. Jeżeli zasadniczym problemem książki Konrada Lorenza Odwrotna strona zwierciadła była próba rekonstrukcji historii naturalnej ludzkiego poznania i polemika z tradycją Kanta co do istoty poznania, to niniejsza praca stanowi zalążek refleksji nad naturalną historią ludzkiego rozumienia oraz nad polemiką z antropocentryczną hermeneutyką filozoficzną. Głównym celem pracy jest przyjrzenie się hipotezie, jakoby podmiotowe egzystencjały rozumienia, nastrojenia czy bycia-w-świecie można było ujmować w formie naturalnych adaptacji organizmów ludzkich i pozaludzkich.
The article attempts to present the philosophical idea of origin of human capability to interpret and understand meanings. I am inspired by the results of contemporary cognitive and natural sciences as well as psychology. In view of those sciences one can defy hermeneutical concepts, which are embedded in the modern anthropocentric tradition. I would like to explain the ontological status of so-called hermeneutical skills in a naturalized form that does not avoid the continuous gradation of subject’s structures or abilities without falling into trivial reductionism. I demonstrate that the comprehensive formation of understanding processes is reserved for particular groups of human beings. However, it can be justified that different animal species and direct human ancestors are equipped with some elements of hermeneutical skills. These skills are a ground of the notion of Dasein. This paper begins my reflection on the natural history of human understanding and on polemics with anthropocentric philosophical hermeneutics. The basic aim of this work is to closely consider the hypothesis which states that the fundamental aspect of human existence (primordial modes) such as comprehension, attuning towards meanings or being-in-the-world can be grasped as natural adaptations of human and non-human organisms.

Komunikowanie międzykulturowe istnieje od dawna – pewnie od pierwszych kontaktów pomiędzy społecznościami, które już były w ten czy inny sposób zróżnicowane, odmienne, i które posługiwały się innymi językami. Intensyfi kacja kontaktów między różnymi społecznościami i społeczeństwami, szczególnie w nowoczesności, sprawiła, że z natury rzeczy wzrosła ilość i zakres tego komunikowania. Różnych sytuacji wymagających komunikowania międzykulturowego jest wiele. Pomiędzy różnymi jednostkami i grupami oraz ich kulturami, a nawet pomiędzy odmiennymi cywilizacjami, może istnieć komunikowanie, może istnieć porozumienie, a nawet zrozumienie, choć nie jest ono łatwe, proste ani tym bardziej jednoznaczne. Treść prezentowanego artykułu ma charakter teoretyczny i dotyczy ona po pierwsze form komunikowania międzykulturowego, po drugie jego „istoty”, za którą uznaję fakt, iż zawsze jest ono swoistym „przekładem”, oraz po trzecie trudności i przeszkód w jego praktycznym funkcjonowaniu.
Intercultural communication is common, although diff erent is the degree of cultural diff erences between partners in communication. Every act of communication requires a certain portion of common cultural competence that is the ability to understand symbolic messages. Each act of intercultural communication is also a kind of “translation”, as it involves a “translation” from a different culture to one’s own culture. This is possible thanks to a certain similarity of cultures and a will to communicate. “Translation” makes it possible to fi nd something common, or at least something similar, between contacting partners who belong to diff erent cultures. Nevertheless, the understanding is rarely full, because generally in communication (and even more in intercultural communication), there are many obstacles making it diffi cult, that is, among others: objective language diff erences, stereotypes, lack of understanding of the nuances and the context of communication. Communication is, however, possible, despite the lack of full understanding.

The paper analyzes publications on refugees in Poland. It presents the conceptual asymmetries and clichés that might hinder the realization of the postulate that the researchers should be the translators of the worldviews of both the refugees and the members of the host society. Three types of asymmetries are being discussed. The first one concerns the unequal regard to the trustworthy and motives of informants. Many authors treat the relations given by the refugees under study as statements on facts, while the relations of other categories of informants as declarations. By the same token, the explaining of the motives of actions in the case of refugees usually takes into account the broad cultural context, while in the case of other categories of research subjects this context is not embodied yet their actions are being evaluated. The second asymmetry pertains to the explanation of the failure of the adaptation processes, which is not matched by a similar one as far as success stories are concerned. Eventually, the third asymmetry consists of differentiated attitudes with regard to the non-governmental organizations and the state agencies. It is often the case that non-governmental organizations are a priori positively evaluated, while state agencies negatively. The paper also considers another often encountered conceptual cliché which describes the centers for refugees as a total institution. The empirical material under analysis shows that these do not fit Erving Goffman's definition of this phenomenon.

This article presents the research conducted on intellectually disabled persons employed in the Professional Activation Municipality Institution in Dobra (Poland). The main aim of this analysis was to uncover how persons with mild intellectual disability understand law principles. In the conducted studies qualitative strategies, such as, imperative theoretical paradigm and phenomenological approach were used. Gathered empirical materials were used as a basis for reconstructing the experiences of researched employees, by decoding and describing the way mildly disabled persons understand law principles.
