In this paper we describe a few architectures and software for parallel-processing computers. We have tested a cluster constructed with the use of MPI. All tests have been performed for one- and two-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic plasma. We have concluded from the results of these tests that a simple problem should be run in a sequential node, as its execution time does not essentially decrease with the number of processors used. At the same time, the execution time of a complex problem decreases significantly with the number of processors. In the case of two-dimensional plasma the acceleration factor has reached the value of 3.7 with the use of 10 processors.

This paper deals with the development of mechanism with hybrid kinematic structure called trivariant and its subsystems. Hybrid machines are characterized by connecting advantages of both type mechanisms together - high dynamics of parallel mechanisms for positioning and high flexibility and high mobility range of serial mechanisms for orientation. At our department was built the small-scale mechanism prototype used for testing, functional verification, for education and training. There was created the simulation software and control system based on standard PC for this prototype. Our prototype can be applied like small CNC milling machine but it is possible to modify it also for the manipulation with objects like robot device.

The Bulgarian-Polish-Russian parallel corpusThe Semantics Laboratory Team of Institute of Slavic Studies of Polish Academy of Sciences is planning to begin work on the creation of a Bulgarian-Polish-Russian parallel corpus. The three selected languages are representatives of the main groups of Slavic languages: Bulgarian represents the southern group of Slavic languages, Polish – the western group of Slavic languages, Russian – the eastern group of Slavic languages. Our project will be the first parallel corpus of these three languages. The planned corpus will be based on material, dating from one period (the 20th century) and will have a synchronous nature. The project will not constitute the sum of the separate corpora of selected languages.One of the problems with creating multilingual parallel corpora are different proportions of translated texts between the selected languages, for example, Polish literature is often translated into Bulgarian, but not vice versa.Bulgarian, Russian and Polish differ typologically – Bulgarian is an analytic language, Polish and Russian are synthetic. The parallel corpus should have compatible annotation, while taking into account the characteristic features of the selected languages.We hope that the Bulgarian-Polish-Russian parallel corpus will serve as a source of linguistic material of contrastive language studies and may prove to be a big help for linguists, translators, terminologists and students of linguistics. The results of our work will be available on the Internet.

The present paper discusses real parallel computations. On the basis of a selected group of dynamic programming algorithms, a number of factors affecting the efficiency of parallel computations such as, e.g., the way of distributing tasks, the interconnection structure between particular elements of the parallel system or the way of organizing of interprocessor communication are analyzed. Computations were implemented in the parallel multitransputer SUPER NODE 1000 system using from 5 to 50 transputers.

Opis:
In this article we present a navigation system of a mobile robot based on parallel calculations. It is assumed that the robot is equipped with a 3D laser range scanner. The system is essentially based on a dual grid-object, where labels are attached to detected objects (such maps can be used in navigation based on semantic information). We use a classical SMPA (Sense - Model - Plan - Act) architecture for navigation, however, some steps concerning object detection, planning and localization are parallelized in order to speed up the entire process. The CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) technology allows us to execute our algorithms on many processing units with use of a inexpensive graphics card which makes it possible to apply the proposed navigation system in a real time.

This paper is devoted to the total tardiness minimization scheduling problem, where the efficiency of a processor increases due to its learning. Such problems model real-life settings that occur in the presence of a human learning (industry, manufacturing, management) and in some computer systems. However, the increasing growth of significant achievements in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning is a premise that the human-like learning will be present in mechanized industrial processes that are controlled or performed by machines as well as in the greater number of multi-agent computer systems. Therefore, the optimization algorithms dedicated in this paper for scheduling problems with learning are not only the answer for present day scheduling problems (where human plays important role), but they are also a step forward to the improvement of self-learning and adapting systems that undeniably will occur in a new future. To solve the analysed problem, we propose parallel computation approaches that are based on NEH, tabu search and simulated annealing algorithms. The numerical analysis confirm high accuracy of these methods and show that the presented approaches significantly decrease running times of simulated annealing and tabu search and also reduce the running times of NEH.

The herein proposed method of synthesis of the parallel robot applied as flight simulator motion system control laws came from author's 20 year experience in developing, integrating and testing the control laws and their software dedicated to different simulators. The goal of the simulator motion control law synthesis at the proposed method is not minimizing cost function taken at the beginning of that synthesis process but achieving positive assessment by the operator (e.g. pilot) team on the basis of simulator motion perception. Procedures adopted for those simulators FAT (Final Acceptance Tests) within proposed method were based on standard military equipment testing methods. Performing the final and the most important tests by the real device operators (pilots) was the new element here. The other important modification of the classical method was introducing the simulated object acceleration derivative into the filters controlling the simulator motion system. It appeared to be particularly effective in the cases of highly manoeuvrable airplane simulators.

Between lexical meaning and valency – towards a method for extracting equivalents based on a parallel corpus Some entries in translation dictionaries (even in those for closely related languages) offer multiple target equivalents with disparate meanings even when the meaning of the source word is not considered ambiguous within the source language. The translator’s task of choosing the best fitting text unit is made even more difficult by sparse exemplification and missing or sketchy valency information. Using a parallel corpus, we explore to what extent valency (seen in a broad sense both as a syntactic and semantic property) can help to cope with a few difficult cases of Czech psych verbs in relation to Polish and how the lexical caps can be filled. Next, we compare the manually compiled lists of translation equivalents in context, annotated and sorted by their valency properties, with results of an automatic method, using word-to-word alignments in a lemmatised parallel corpus to build a list of equivalent pairs, annotated by their frequency. We conclude that valency is an important (though not omnipotent) discriminant for the choice of the target equivalent and that the list of translation pairs extracted automatically from a parallel corpus can be a useful supplement to a standard translation dictionary.

Amyloid β (Aβ) is the subject of numerous studies due to its link to the devastating Alzheimer’s disease and it exists in a parallel structure in fibril aggregate. The Iowa mutant (D 23 N) Aβ posses a unique antiparallel fibril aggregate structure and can also form parallel structure. This structural difference, coupled with the fact that occurrence of the Iowa mutant is correlated with early onset Alzheimer’s, suggests to use these peptides as candidates for computational studies of the structural determinants of the toxicity of Alzheimer’s disease. In order to compare the two observed Aβ structural motifs, we designed a computational study to probe the factors that affect the stability of parallel and antiparallel aggregates. Since the structural changes may occur on a timescale beyond that sampled in traditional molecular dynamics (MD), we employed a techniques of scaling the mass to reduce the solution ’s viscosity and compared the results to regular molecular dynamics. The knowledge gained from this study could provide insight into the mechanism of selection for antiparallel and parallel two fold structures.

W artykule przedstawiono analizę porównawczą dotyczącą badania efektywności kilku równoległych implementacji algorytmu Gaussa-Seidela. Analizowany w artykule algorytm pozwala na osiągnięcie dosyć dobrych pod względem szybkości zbieżności oraz wartości współczynnika przyspieszenia obliczeń wyników w porównaniu do standardowej sekwencyjnej oraz równoległej implementacji metody Gaussa-Seidela. Obliczenia praktyczne przeprowadzono w środowisku procesorów wielordzeniowych oraz w środowisku klastrów obliczeniowych.
The paper presents the results of the efficiency analysis of some parallel implementations of Gauss-Seidel algorithm. The main idea of the presented method consists in successive modification of the search directions used in the computations. This modification is performed on the basis of solutions of local optimization subproblems received for all stages of the algorithm. The analyzed algorithm enable to achieve a good efficiency of parallel computation in terms of speed of convergence and value of speedup factor in comparison to standard sequential and parallel implementation of Gauss-Seidel method. Parallel computation were implemented in the multicore processor and multiprocessor cluster.

This article summarizes experimental analyses for the determination of process parameters that can be achieved in an industrial machine tool with parallel kinematics. Focus is on the examination of the machining results' dependency on position and direction. Therefore milling experiments are conducted, testing different positions and directions within the workspace. Surface quality, process forces, acceleration as well as vibration characteristics of the working platform are assessed. Based on measured frequency responses the stability limits are determined at different locations within the workspace. By these examinations it can be confirmed that the dependency of static and dynamic machine properties on position and direction has an influence on machining results. Best results are achieved in central positions of the machine used for most of respective operations. Furthermore it's represented that the machining results are comparable to conventional serial machines though parallel kinematics show a stronger dependency on direction.

The Use of the Lexical Exponents of Hypothetical Modality in Polish and LithuanianIn this article the author focuses on the issue of hypothetical modality[1] in Polish and Lithuanian. A list of the basic exponents of hypothetical modality in both languages is presented. However, the focus is mainly placed on the lexical exponents. On the basis of one of the six groups, which describes a high degree of probability (H5), the differences between the use of the lexical exponents in both languages are examined. Na przykładzie jednej z sześciu grup, opisującej wysoki stopień prawdopodobieństwa (H5), omawia różnice użycia wykładników leksykalnych w obu językach. W badaniach wykorzystuje wielojęzyczne zasoby korpusowe, w tym Polsko-litewski korpus równoległy Clarin-PL.[1] [W literaturze przedmiotu na oznaczenie opisywanych tu treści stosowany jest również termin epistemiczności. MATLAB jest językiem wysokiego poziomu do obliczeń technicznych oraz interaktywnym środowiskiem przeznaczonym do projektowania algorytmów, analizy i wizualizacji danych oraz obliczeń numerycznych. Do MATLAB-a wbudowano operacje na wektorach, macierzach i tablicach, które tworzą matematyczną podstawę do obliczeń naukowych i technicznych. Pozwala to na szybsze tworzenie i wykorzystywanie algorytmów obliczeniowych - niż przy użyciu tradycyjnych języków (C, Fortran), gdyż przy realizacji zadań na niskim poziomie nie ma potrzeby deklarowania zmiennych, ich typów i adresów. Obliczenia równoległe pozwalają realizować na komputerach wielordzeniowych, wieloprocesorowych i klastrach, zadania intensywne numerycznie i z dużą ilością danych. W artykule opisano możliwości wykonywania obliczeń równoległych w środowisku MATLAB v. 7.11 (R2010b) z wykorzystaniem jego bibliotek Parallel Computing Toolbox v.5.0 oraz MATLAB Distributed Computing Server v.5.0.
MATLAB is a high-level technical computing language and interactive environment for algorithm development, data visualization, data analysis, and numeric computation. The MATLAB language supports the vector and matrix operations that are fundamental to engineering and scientific problems. It enables faster development and execution of algorithms than with traditional languages (C, FORTRAN) because it do not needs to perform low-level administrative tasks, such as declaring variables, specifying data types, and allocating memory. Parallel computing lets solve computationally and data-intensive problems using multicore processors, GPUs, and computer clusters. In this paper, the application of the parallel computing in MATLAB v. 7.11 (R2010b) environments has been described with using Parallel Computing Toolbox v.5.0 and MATLAB Distributed Computing Server Version 5.0.

In this paper I present a corpus-based study of the interference of the verb say from English source texts into their Polish translations. I compare a sizeable corpus of native Polish fic- tion with corpora of English-Polish fiction translations and argue that the various forms of the verb say commonly used in the English narration influence the choices made in some (albeit not all) of the Polish translations. In order to exemplify my claims I use parallel corpora to show how two different professional translators working with an identical set of source texts were influenced by the narrative verb distribution.

The paper brings forward an idea of multi-threaded computation synchronization based on the shared semaphored cache in the multi-core CPUs. It is dedicated to the implementation of multi-core PLC control, embedded solution or parallel computation of models described using hardware description languages. The shared semaphored cache is implemented as guarded memory cells within a dedicated section of the cache memory that is shared by multiple cores. This enables the cores to speed up the data exchange and seamlessly synchronize the computation. The idea has been verified by creating a multi-core system model using Verilog HDL. The simulation of task synchronization methods allows for proving the benefits of shared semaphored memory cells over standard synchronization methods. The proposed idea enhances the computation in the algorithms that consist of relatively short tasks that can be processed in parallel and requires fast synchronization mechanisms to avoid data race conditions.

The paper addresses the problem of scheduling in the two-stage flowshop with parallel unrelated machines and renewable resource constraints. The objective is minimization of makespan. The problem is NP-hard. Fast heuristic algorithms using list scheduling and greedy strategies are proposed. For evaluation of the performance of the algorithms computational experiments are performed on randomly generated test problems, and results are reported.

The paper describes the results of analysis on the resonance phenomenon in a parallel RLCα circuit with supercapacitor modeled as a fractional-order capacitance. A complex, more accurate fractional-order model has been taken into analysis. Formulas for frequency characteristics and resonance conditions have been derived and presented by simulation studies of the concerned fractional-order system.

Dzisiejsze procesory w komputerach osobistych i urządzeniach mobilnych umożliwiają coraz bardziej efektywne zrównoleglanie działań w celu szybszego uzyskania wyników. Twórcy oprogramowania mają wiele różnych możliwości zaimplementowania współbieżności, jednak zazwyczaj trzymają się jednej, najbardziej znanej sobie techniki. Warto prześledzić działanie każdej z nich, aby odkryć, kiedy można ją wykorzystać w sposób efektywny, a kiedy lepiej poszukać alternatywy. W poniższym artykule zostały przedstawione sposoby równoległej implementacji obliczeń matematycznych z wykorzystaniem wątków, zadań, puli wątków, puli zadań oraz równoległej pętli for z klasy Parallel. Wszystkie zostały napisane w języku C# na silniku Windows Presentation Foundation platformy .NET. Zaimplementowane obliczenia matematyczne to obliczenie liczby Pi z pomocą wzoru Leibniza.
Nowadays processors working in personal computers and mobile devices allow for more and more effective parallel computing. Developers have at their disposal many different methods of implementing concurrency, but usually use the one, that they now best. It is beneficial to know, when a particular technique is good and when it is better to find an alternative. This paper presents different ways of implementing parallel mathematical calculations using threads, tasks, thread pool, task pool and parallel for loop. Each method was used in a C# application running on Windows Presentation Foundation engine on .NET platform. Implemented operation is calculation value of Pi using Leibnitz’s formula.

The models of the non-renewal reliability systems with dependent times to failure of components are presented. The dependence arises from some common environmental stresses and shocks. It is assumed that the failure occurs only because of two independent sources common for two neighbour components. The reliability function of series and parallel systems with components depending on common sources are computed. The reliability functions of the systems with dependent and independent life lengths of components are compared.

One of the most challenging issues in the case of many and multi-core architectures is how to exploit their potential computing power in legacy systems without a deep knowledge of their architecture. The analysis of static dependence and dynamic data dependences of a program run, can help to identify independent paths that could have been computed by individual parallel threads. The statistics of reusing the data and its size is also crucial in adapting the application in GPU many-core hardware architecture because of specific memory hierarchies. The proposed profiling system accomplishes static data analysis and computes dynamic dependencies for Java programs as well as recommends parts of source code with the highest potential for parallelization in GPU. Such an analysis can also provide starting point for automatic parallelization.

In this paper, it was presented numerical results related to three dimensional simulation of motion of a vortex ring. For the simulation it was chosen the Vortex In Cell method. The method was shortly described in the paper. The numerical results were obtained on the single processor (x86) architecture. The disadvantage of the single processor computation is a very long time of computation. To menage this problem, we switched to the parallel architecture. In our first approach to the multicore architecture we tested the possibility and algorithms for the solution of the algebraic system of equations that resulted form discretization of the Poisson equation. We presented the results obtained with CUDA architecture. In order to better understand how does the parallel algorithms work on CUDA architecture, it was shortly presented a scheme of the device and how programs are executed on it. We showed also our results which are related to the parallelization of some simple iterative methods like the Jacobi method and Red-Black Gauss-Seidel method for solution of the algebraic system. The results were ncouraging. For the Red Black Gauss-Seidel using GTX480 card, the calculations were 90-times shorter than on a single processor. As we know the solution to the Poisson equation is equivalent to the solution to the algebraic systems.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki numeryczne ruchu trójwymiarowego pierścienia wirowego. W obliczeniach zastosowano metodę cząstek wirowych, która została pokrótce opisana. Obliczenia przeprowadzono na pojedynczym procesorze (x86). Wadą takiej realizacji jest długi czas obliczeń. Dla przyspieszenia obliczeń zaproponowano algorytm obliczeń równoległych w środowisku wieloprocesorowym karty graficznej z technologią CUDA. Architekturę karty krótko opisano. Znajomość architektury ma istotne znaczenie dla efektywności kodu. Napisany program przetestowano, rozwiązując układ równań algebraicznych otrzymany po dyskretyzacji równania Poissona. Przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń dla zrównoleglonych, prostych metod iteracyjnych rozwiązywania układów równań takich jak metoda Jacobiego czy „Red-Black Gauss-Seidel”. Dla metody „Red-Black Gauss-Seidel” oraz karty GTX480 otrzymano 90-krotne przyspieszenie czasu obliczeń względem pojedynczego procesora.

Propagating scattered context grammars are used to generate sentences of languages defined by scatterd context grammars followed by the strings corresponding to the derivation trees. It is proved that for every language defined by a scattered context grammar, there exists a propagating scattered context grammar whose language consists of original language sentences followed by strings representing their derivation trees.

The method and the mechatronic system of active control of the dynamic spatial positioning of the executive body of a parallel kinematics machine tool are proposed. By means of geometric modeling, the basic analytical relations that characterize the interconnection between the rods of the mechatronic control system and the power rods of the parallel kinematics machine tool are calculated. The analytical dependencies that characterize errors of the spatial position of the executive body of the parallel kinematics machine tool are set out. The prototype of the mechatronic system of active control of the dynamic spatial position of the executive body of the parallel kinematics machine tool has been manufactured and its presetting and viability checking made. The special equipment to control the exact position of the tool of the parallel kinematics machine tool when it comes to the position is proposed.

We present the actual status and the most important issues related to the installation of the data reduction LOFAR software on high power computer Prometheus located in ACC Cyfronet. We refer to the software itself as well its practical use cases in the context of the scientific tool and the detailed installation/testing methodology. We address most typical challenges and problems that occurred during our attempts to set up the complete and ready-to-use LOFAR environment (including not only programs, but also libraries, scripts and other additional tools) on non-standard (cluster-type) computing system. The result of these works is then briey summarized. We also discuss the is- sues related to LOFAR documentation, maintenance, distribution and further development. Finally, we propose some future improvements.

Multilingual corpora have found many applications in arts and humanities and social sciences, as well as in translation. A number of ways exist in which multilingual corpora can be used. Translators and CAT users would predominantly use translation memories (TM). Other users can choose from two ways of accessing the resources produced by The Institute of Slavic Studies. In the first method, the user needs to download the open-source TMX translation memories from CLARIN-PL DSpace repository (https://clarin-pl.eu/dspace) and load it into their preferred computer application. One can found free and proprietary applications that facilitate querying multilingual corpora; CLARIN-PL also offers free tools. The other method of accessing the multilingual data produced by The Institute of Slavic Studies does not require any advanced computer skills from the user. CLARIN-PL webpage includes the KonText search engine, which contains also Polish-Bulgarian resources (https://kontext. clarin-pl.eu/). The Polish-Bulgarian corpus contains the following types of resources: (1) fiction literature, (2) specialist literature (literature that is a reflection of the latest technological and cultural developments); and (3) film dialogues, which are the most similar to spoken language.

Slavic languages and the Lithuanian language in the Clarin-PL parallel corporaThe Clarin Eric and Clarin-PL strategic scientific purpose is to support humanistic research in a multicultural and multilingual Europe. Polish researchers put the emphasis on building a bridge between the Polish language and Polish linguistic technologies and other European languages and their linguistic technologies. So far, the Polish scientific community has mainly focused on Polish-English connections. Clarin-PL has been developing the first and only multilingual corpora of the Polish language in conjunction with other Slavic languages and the Lithuanian language: the Polish-Bulgarian-Russian Parallel Corpus and the Polish- Lithuanian Parallel Corpus. The parallel corpora created by the ISS PAS Corpus Linguistics and Semantics Team break through the existing “canons” and allow scientists access to interlinked multilingual language resources – in the first phase limited to the languages of the three Slavic groups and the Lithuanian language. In the article, the authors present very detailed information on their original system of the semantic annotation of scope quantification in multilingual parallel corpora, hitherto unused in the subject literature. Due to the system’s originality, the semantic annotation is carried out manually. Identification of particular values of scope quantification in a sentence and the hereby presented attempts of its recording are supported by long-term research conducted by an international team of linguists and computer scientists / mathematicians developing the issue of quantification of names, time and aspect in natural languages. Języki słowiańskie i litewski w korpusach równoległych Clarin-PLStrategicznym celem naukowym Clarin ERIC i Clarin-PL jest wspieranie badań humanistycznych w wielokulturowej i wielojęzycznej Europie. Dla polskich badaczy ważna jest budowa pomostu między językiem polskim, polskimi technologiami językowymi a innymi językami europejskimi i na ich rzecz opracowanymi technologiami językowymi. Dotychczas w nauce polskiej największy nacisk był kładziony na powiązania polsko-angielskie. Clarin-PL opracowuje zatem pierwsze jak dotąd wielojęzyczne korpusy języka polskiego w zestawieniu z innymi językami słowiańskimi oraz z językiem litewskim: Korpus równoległy polsko-bułgarsko-rosyjski i Korpus równoległy polsko-litewski. Tworzone przez Zespół Lingwistyki Korpusowej i Semantyki (IS PAN) korpusy równoległe przełamują dotychczasowe „kanony” i udostępniają nauce powiązane wielojęzyczne zasoby – w pierwszym etapie ograniczone do języków trzech grup słowiańskich oraz języka litewskiego. W artykule autorzy przedstawiają bardzo szczegółową informację o zastosowanej po raz pierwszy w literaturze przedmiotu anotacji semantycznej dotyczącej kwantyfikacji zakresowej w wielojęzycznych korpusach równoległych. Z powodu swojego rozległego zakresu i nowatorstwa ta anotacja semantyczna jest nanoszona ręcznie. Abstract: The main goal was to improve a state of the art 6D SLAM algorithm with a new GPGPU-based implementation of data registration module. Data registration is based on ICP (Iterative Closest Point) algorithm that is fully implemented in the GPU with NVIDIA FERMI architecture. In our research we focus on mobile robot inspection intervention systems applicable in hazardous environments. The goal is to deliver a complete system capable of being used in real life. In this paper we demonstrate our achievements in the field of on line robot localization and mapping. We demonstrated an experiment in real large environment. We compared two strategies of data alingment - simple ICP and ICP using so called meta scan.
Głównym celem jest artykułu jest usprawnienie algorytmu 6D SLAM za pomocą implementacji modułu rejestracji danych wykorzystującą obliczenia równoległe. Moduł rejestracji danych jest oparty o algorytm ICP (ang. Iterative Closest Point), który został w pełni zaimplementowany w architekturze GPU NVIDIA FERMI. W naszych badaniach koncentrujemy się na mobilnych systemach robotycznych inspekcyjno-interwencyjnych dedykowanych do pracy w niebezpiecznym środowisku. Celem jest opracowanie kompletnego systemu, który może być wykorzystany w realnej aplikacji. W tym artykule przedstawiamy nasze rezultaty w zakresie lokalizacji i budowy mapy w trybie on-line. Przedstawiamy eksperyment w rzeczywistym, rozległym środowisku. Zostały porównane dwie strategie dopasowywania danych, klasyczna oraz wykorzystująca tzw. meta scan.

The present paper discusses an effective adaptive methods suited for use in parallel environment. An in-house, parallel flow solver based on the residual distribution method is used for the solution of flow problems. Simulation is parallelized based on the domain decomposition approach. Adaptive changes to the mesh are achieved by two distinctive techniques. Mesh refinement is performed by dividing element edges and a subsequent application of pre defined splitting templates. Mesh regularization and derefinement is achieved through topology conserving node movement (r-adaptivity). Parallel implementations of an adaptive use the dynamic load balancing technique.

The paper presents an innovative data classification approach based on parallel computing performed on a GPGPU (General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit). The results shown in this paper were obtained in the course of a European Commission-funded project: “Research on large-scale storage, sharing and processing of spatial laser data”, which concentrated on LIDAR data storage and sharing via databases and the application of parallel computing using nVidia CUDA technology. The paper describes the general requirements of nVidia CUDA technology application in massive LiDAR data processing. The studied point cloud data structure fulfills these requirements in most potential cases. A unique organization of the processing procedure is necessary. An innovative approach based on rapid parallel computing and analysis of each point’s normal vector to examine point cloud geometry within a classification process is described in this paper. The presented algorithm called LiMON classifies points into basic classes defined in LAS format: ground, buildings, vegetation, low points. The specific stages of the classification process are presented. The efficiency and correctness of LiMON were compared with popular program called Terrascan. The correctness of the results was tested in quantitive and qualitative ways. The test of quality was executed on specific objects, that are usually difficult for classification algorithms. The quantitive test used various environment types: forest, agricultural area, village, town. Reference clouds were obtained via two different methods: (1) automatic classification using Terrascan, (2) manually corrected clouds classified by Terrascan. The following coefficients for quantitive testing of classification correctness were calculated: Type 1 Error, Type 2 Error, Kappa, Total Error. The results shown in the paper present the use of parallel computing on a GPGPU as an attractive route for point cloud data processing.

The analysis of a biological structure with numerical methods based on engineering approach (i.e. Computational Solid Mechanics) is becoming more and more popular nowadays. The examination of complex, well reproduced biological structures (i.e. bone) is impossible to perform with a single workstation. The mesh for Finite Element Method (FEM) of the order of 106 is required for modeling a small piece of trabecular bone. The homogenization techniques could be used to solve this problem, but these methods require several assumptions and simplifications. Hence, effective analysis of a biological structure in a parallel environment is desirable. The software for structure simulation at cluster architecture are available; however, FEM generator is still inaccessible in that environment. The mesh generator for biological applications – Cosmoprojector – developed at Division of Virtual Engineering, Poznan University of Technology has been adapted for the parallel environment. The preliminary results of complex structure generation confirm the correctness of the proposed method. In this paper, the algorithm of computational mesh generation in a parallel environment has been presented. The proposed system has been tested at biological structure.

This paper will show a new approach to the solution of SAT-problems. It has been based on the isomorphism between the Boolean algebras of finite sets and the Boolean algebras of logic functions depending on a finite number of binary variables. Ternary vectors are the main data structure representing sets of Boolean vectors. The respective set operations (mainly the complement and the intersection) can be executed in a bit-parallel way (64 bits at present), but additionally also on different processors working in parallel. Even a hierarchy of processors, a small set of processor cores of a single CPU, and the huge number of cores of the GPU has been taken into consideration. There is no need for any search algorithms. The approach always finds all solutions of the problem without consideration of special cases (such us no solution, one solution, all solutions). It also allows to include problem-relevant knowledge into the problem-solving process at an early point of time. Very often it is possible to use ternary vectors directly for the modeling of a problem. Some examples are used to illustrate the efficiency of this approach (Sudoku, Queen's problems on the chessboard, node bases in graphs, graph-coloring problems, Hamiltonian and Eulerian paths etc.).

The presented comparative analysis concerns two iterative solvers for large-scale linear systems related to žFEM simulation of human bones. The considered scalar elliptic problems represent the strongly heterogeneous structure of real bone specimens. The voxel data are obtained with high resolution computer tomography. Non-conforming Rannacher-Turek finite elements are used to discretize of the considered elliptic problem. The preconditioned conjugate gradient method is known to be the best tool for efficient solution of large-scale symmetric systems with sparse positive definite matrices. Here, the performance of two preconditioners is studied, namely modified incomplete Cholesky factorization, MIC(0), and algebraic multigrid. The comparative analysis is mostly based on the computing times to run the sequential codes. The number of iterations for both preconditioners is also discussed. Finally, numerical tests of a novel parallel MIC(0) code are presented. The obtained parallel speed-ups and efficiencies illustrate the scope of efficient applications for real-life large-scale problems.

The article presents a comparison of Kotlin coroutines with analogous solutions in Java and Scala in parallel program-ming using chosen metric and non-metric criteria. For that purpose, a multi-module project with corresponding imple-mentations of selected algorithms in all of the three languages was created and then analyzed. The studies were preced-ed by a description of the created project.
Artykuł prezentuje porównanie wykorzystania współprogramów języka Kotlin w przetwarzaniu równoległym do analogicznych rozwiązań w Javie i Scali względem wybranych kryteriów mierzalnych i niemierzalnych. W tym celu stworzono oraz przeanalizowano wielomodułową aplikację z odpowiadającymi sobie implementacjami wyselekcjonowanych algorytmów w trzech wspomnianych językach. Analiza poprzedzona została opisem utworzonego projektu.

Systems of consistent linear equations with symmetric positive semidefinite matrices arise naturally while solving many scientific and engineering problems. In case of a "floating" static structure, the boundary conditions are not sufficient to prevent its rigid body motions.
Traditional solvers based on Cholesky decomposition can be adapted to these systems by recognition of zero rows or columns and also by setting up a well conditioned regular submatrix of the problem that is used for implementation of a generalised inverse. Conditioning such a submatrix seems to be related with detection of so called fixing nodes such that the related boundary conditions make the structure as stiff as possible. We can consider the matrix of the problem as an unweighted non-oriented graph. Now we search for nodes that stabilize the solution well-fixing nodes (such nodes are sufficiently far away from each other and are not placed near any straight line). The set of such nodes corresponds to one type of graph center.

Opis:
Parallel kinematics with a higher end-effector degree of freedom such as hexapods and pentapods consist of a large number of joints and slender struts. However, it is only possible to create comparably low levelsof bearing and strut bending stiffness atreasonable expense due to the limited construction space. That means that these structures are very susceptible to vibration. Even in the low-frequency range they have a large number of relevant eigenmodes that are only dampened slightly. Simultaneously, it is difficult to analyze vibrational properties due to coupled eigenmodes, which also makes it difficult to discover ways to remedy this situation. This article will take the example of a pentapod to analyze the dynamic properties of slightly dampened parallel kinematics by simulation to study potential means of manipulating it. This will include a description of the model formation of the mechanical system. The article will also address ways of reducing model size and using various simulation environments to boost analysis efficiency. Finally, both passive and active strategies will be studied and evaluated for boosting damping. Amongst others it could be shown that it is not necessary to damp every of the five kinematic chains to achieve effective improvement of the system damping behaviour.

In this paper, we describe an easy and efficient way to implement certain population-based algorithms (in the discussed case, multi-agent computing system) on such runtime environments. Our solution is based on an Erlang software library which implements dedicated parallel patterns. We provide technological details on our approach and discuss experimental results.

This paper presents FPGA and softcore CPU based solution for large datasets parallel core calculation using rough set methods. Architectures shown in this paper have been tested on two real datasets running presented solutions inside FPGA unit. Tested datasets had 1 000 to 10 000 000 objects. The same operations were performed in software implementation. Obtained results show the big acceleration in computation time using hardware supporting core generation in comparison to pure software implementation.

The paper discusses the solving of inverse thermomechanical problems requiring a large number of FEM tasks with various boundary conditions. The study examined the case when all tasks have the same number of nodes, finite elements, and nodal connections. In this study, the speedup of the solution of the inverse problem is achieved in two ways: 1. The solution of all FEM tasks in parallel mode. 2. The use by all FEM tasks a common matrix with addresses of nonzero elements in the stiffness matrices. These algorithms are implemented in the own FEM code, designed to solve inverse problems of the hot metal forming. The calculations showed that developed code in parallel mode is effective for the number of tasks late than 0,7-0,9 of the number of available processors. Thus, at some point, it becomes effective to use a sequential solution to all tasks and to use a common matrix of addresses of nonzero elements in the stiffness matrix. The achieved acceleration at the optimal choice of the algorithm is 2–10 times compared with the classical multivariate calculations in the FEM. The paper provides an example of the practical application of the developed code for calculating the allowable processing maps for laser dieless drawing of ultra-thin wire from copper alloy by solving the thermomechanical inverse problem. The achieved acceleration made it possible to use the developed parallel code in the control software of the laboratory setup for laser dieless drawing.

Research in fluid dynamics can be done on both an experimental and numerical basis, For the latter a computer code needs to be written in order to solve the governing fluid flow equations. The KAPPA code is a CFD simulation package serving as a platform to develop faster and more accurate numerical schemes, better physical models, or as an engineering tool for the simulations of flows in technical equipment. Another important subject is the training and education of students or engineers. Since CFD is highly calculation intensive, new computer architectures such as vector and parallel computers are necessary to treat more complex flow fields or to resolve these flows more accurately. Therefore KAPPA has been specially designed to be used on these architectures. The structure of the code is such that the solution of additional transport equations needed for the simulation of chemistry, turbulence modeling, multiphase flows etc. can be easily implemented. In order to treat complex geometries the code is block structured. The finite volume method is used to discretize the equations in space. The code is written in Fortran 90 using the highly desirable new feature of this language. For the application of the code on parallel computers a message passing tool has been used.

Rigid still-standing hexapod frameworks, such as clamping tables, are particular suitable for this approach, as no dynamic influences need to be taken into account within the measurement model and they allow a measurement in 6 degrees of freedom. On the other hand, the stiffness of rigid frameworks is reduced by force sensor integration significantly. In addition, many approaches apply joints or flexure hinges to reduced lateral forces and improve the measuring quality, which reduce the stiffness even more. In this contribution, the compliance of a clamping table with integrated force sensors and flexure hinges is determined by experimental measurements using a multiline laser interferometer, by analytic calculation, and by finite element simulation. In conclusion, the amount of stiffness reduction by force sensors and flexure hinges is quantified and different methods for compliance determination are compared.

In this paper after a short theoretical introduction about modern techniques used inparallel computing, we report a case study related to the design and development of the Caliban Linux High Performance Computing cluster, carried out by the author in the High Performance Computing Laboratory of the University of L’Aquila. Finally we report some performance evaluation tests related to the Caliban cluster performed using HPL (High-Performance Linpack) benchmarks.

To reduce the maintenance cost and improve the effectiveness of the maintenance activities in series-parallel systems, a preventive maintenance (PM) decision model for series-parallel systems subject to reliability was developed. This model considered the effect of failure maintenance on PM cycle and the restriction of system reliability in maintenance decision making, thus can help decision-maker to arrange appropriate and effective maintenance activities. Opis:
The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) collaboration is developing a prototype time of flight (TOF)-positron emission tomograph (PET) detector based on long polymer scintillators. This novel approach exploits the excellent time properties of the plastic scintillators, which permit very precise time measurements. The very fast fi eld programmable gate array (FPGA)-based front-end electronics and the data acquisition system, as well as low- and high-level reconstruction algorithms were specially developed to be used with the J-PET scanner. The TOF-PET data processing and reconstruction are time and resource demanding operations, especially in the case of a large acceptance detector that works in triggerless data acquisition mode. In this article, we discuss the parallel computing methods applied to optimize the data processing for the J-PET detector. We begin with general concepts of parallel computing and then we discuss several applications of those techniques in the J-PET data processing.

With the rapid development of electronic technology, network technology and cloud computing technology, the current data is increasing in the way of mass, has entered the era of big data. Based on cloud computing clusters, this paper proposes a novel method of parallel implementation of multilayered neural networks based on Map-Reduce. Namely in order to meet the requirements of big data processing, this paper presents an efficient mapping scheme for a fully connected multi-layered neural network, which is trained by using error back propagation (BP) algorithm based on Map-Reduce on cloud computing clusters (MRBP). The batch-training (or epoch-training) regimes are used by effective segmentation of samples on the clusters, and are adopted in the separated training method, weight summary to achieve convergence by iterating. For a parallel BP algorithm on the clusters and a serial BP algorithm on uniprocessor, the required time for implementing the algorithms is derived. The performance parameters, such as speed-up, optimal number and minimum of data nodes are evaluated for the parallel BP algorithm on the clusters. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed parallel BP algorithm in this paper has better speed-up, faster convergence rate, less iterations than that of the existed algorithms.

Opis:
Newton-Raphson DC analysis of large-scale nonlinear circuits may be an extremely time consuming process even if sparse matrix techniques and bypassing of nonlinear models calculation are used. A slight decrease in the time required for this task may be enabled on multi-core, multithread computers if the calculation of the mathematical models for the nonlinear elements as well as the stamp management of the sparse matrix entries is managed through concurrent processes. In this paper it is shown how the numerical complexity of this problem (and thus its solution time) can be further reduced via the circuit decomposition and parallel solution of blocks taking as a departure point the Bordered-Block Diagonal (BBD) matrix structure. This BBD-parallel approach may give a considerable profit though it is strongly dependent on the system topology. This paper presents a theoretical foundation of the algorithm, its implementation, and numerical complexity analysis in virtue of practical measurements of matrix operations.

In the paper an implementation of signal processing chain for a passive radar is presented. The passive radar which was developed at the Warsaw University of Technology, uses FM radio and DVB-T television transmitters as ”illuminators of opportunity”. As the computational load associated with passive radar processing is very high, NVIDIA CUDA technology has been employed for effective implementation using parallel processing. The paper contains the description of the algorithms implementation and the performance results analysis.

This paper deals with the analysis and synthesis of a newly selected Cable-suspended Parallel Robot configuration, named CPR-D system. The camera carrier workspace has the shape of a parallelepiped. The CPR-D system has a unique Jacobian matrix that maps the relationship between internal and external coordinates. This geometric relationship is a key solution for the definition of the system kinematic and dynamic models. Because of the CPR-D system complexity, the Lagrange principle of virtual work has been adapted. Two significant Examples have been used for the CPR-D system analysis and validation.

A reliability model of a water supply network has beens examined. Its main features are: a topology that can be decomposed by the so-called state factorization into a (relatively)small number of derivative networks, each having a series-parallel structure (1), binary-state components (either operative or failed) with given flow capacities (2), a multi-state character of the whole network and its sub-networks – a network state is defined as the maximal flow between a source (sources) and a sink (sinks) (3), all capacities (component, network, and sub-network) have integer values (4). As the network operates, its state changes due to component failures, repairs, and replacements. A newly developed method of computing the inter-state transition intensities has been presented. It is based on the so-called state factorization and series-parallel aggregation. The analysis of these intensities shows that the failure-repair process of the considered system is an asymptotically homogenous Markov process. It is also demonstrated how certain reliability parameters useful for the network maintenance planning can be determined on the basis of the asymptotic intensities. For better understanding of the presented method, an illustrative example is given.

The study considers the question of whether (and how) bilingual dictionaries may be improved. The information presented in dictionaries has been confronted with textual reality (i.e., with examples of actual translations), based on the German expression fassungslos and its Polish equivalents in parallel texts. The author assumes that bilingual dictionaries are mainly used by language learners, while professional translators may consider them as one of many possible sources. In teaching, multiplying the possible equivalents or suggesting ad hoc solutions is generally not recommended. Despite the attempts at objectivizing lexicographic descriptions, which are made possible by using language corpora, it often turns out that the decisions made by dictionary authors are (and need to be) arbitrary

This paper presents an analysis allowing for the determination of the differential equation describing the circuit of the active filter inverter output current control with an additional measurement of input voltage. The resulting equation allows to determine the conditions that ensure stable operation of the filter with the load in form of a resonant LC circuit. Analysis results were confirmed by computer simulation and experimental studies of commercial active filter.

The proposed methodology is designed specially to solve difficult discrete optimization problems, such as a flexible job shop scheduling problem, which we introduce as a case study used to analyze the efficiency of the designed synchronous algorithm.

Do badań symulacyjnych zbudowano w programie SolidWorks model bryłowy pneumatycznego manipulatora równoległego typu tripod. Badania stymulacyjne ukierunkowane zostały na wyznaczenie przemieszczenia, predkości i przyspieszenia ruchomej platformy manipulatora równoległego ostrukturze 3-UPRR. Program CAD ma ograniczone możliwości zastosowania w modelowaniu kinematyki i dynamiki manipulatorów równoległych, dlatego dalsze badania symulacyjne przeprowadzono na modelu zastępczym po zastosowaniu biblioteki SimMechanics pakietu Matlab-Simulink.
For simulation purposes a solid model of pneumatic tripod parallel manipulator in SolidWorks was constructed. The aim of the simulation was to determine position, velocity and acceleration of the moving platform of a 3-UPRR translation parallel manipulator. Since the application of CAD in modeling kinematics and dynamics of parallel manipulators is restricted further simulation was carried out by means of SimMechanics library and Matlab-Simulink package. In SimMechanics library all the solid elements of the manipulator were described by substitute geometry by means of ellipsoids and assigned both masses and intertial tensors. The manipulator consists of three identical kinematic chains (pneumatic axes) connecting the base and the moving platform. The center point of the moving platform is a resultant of relocation of three pneumatic rodless cylinders independently controlled by servo-valves.

North Korea often tries to hide the results of decades of communist authoritarian leadership and economic mismanagement. The military-first policy has caused a lack of economic development and half of the population is living in miserable conditions, suffering an acute humanitarian crisis. The UN has called for urgent aid, but to avoid it from being diverted into the military sector and the elite, it should be channeled directly to the vulnerable population and flow independently of the denuclearisation talks. There is a need of active diplomacy, international cooperation and engagement to enhance the standard of living of the North Korean people.

The influence of the co-operation frequency of threads in a parallel heuristic algorithm to solve the vehicle routing problem with time windows on the accuracy of solutions is investigated. The accuracy of solutions is defined as their proximity to the best known solutions of Gehring and Homberger's benchmarking tests. Two adaptive co-operation schemes are proposed and experimentally evaluated.
Wyznaczanie tras dla pojazdów z oknami czasowymi (ang. vehicle routing problem with time windows) jest problemem optymalizacji dyskretnej należącym do klasy problemów NP-trudnych. Istnieją metody heurystyczne rozwiązywania problemu, pozwalające wyznaczyć w rozsądnym czasie rozwiązania nieoptymalne o koszcie bliskim kosztowi rozwiązania optymalnego, takie jak symulowane wyżarzanie, przeszukiwanie tabu, algorytmy genetyczne czy algorytmy memetyczne. Wprzypadku algorytmów dwustopniowych, w pierwszej fazie minimalizowana jest liczba tras, a w fazie drugiej całkowita przebyta odległość. Flota składa się z pojazdów o jednakowej, zdefiniowanej pojemności, która nie może zostać przekroczona, a obsługa klientów musi rozpocząć się w czasie trwania ich okien czasowych.

In this paper, the implementation of a Parallel Genetic Algorithm (PGA) for the training stage, and the optimi zation of a monolithic and modular neural network, for pattern recognition are presented. The optimization con sists in obtaining the best architecture in layers, and neu rons per layer achieving the less training error in a shor ter time. The implementation was performed in a multicore architecture, using parallel programming techniques to exploit its resources. We present the results obtained in terms of performance by comparing results of the training stage for sequential and parallel implementations.

Aim of the study: Identification of factors which determine effective communication between a doctor and a patient. Development of a tool for the evaluation of doctors’ skills of breaking bad news to patients’ relatives. Material and methods: The study was conducted with the survey method, and covered a group of 94 doctors of medicine from three hospitals in the Małopolska region in Poland. The Breaking Bad News Skills questionnaire, developed by Wioletta Szwed-Łopata and Jakub Lickiewicz, describes a doctor’s behaviour in contact with a patient’s family. Results: Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to establish the factor structure of Breaking Bad News Skills questionnaire. The scree plot was used prior to determining the number of factors. Internal consistency was evaluated with Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) measure, which should be above 0.6, and Bartlett’s test of sphericity. The factor analysis identified five factors referring to the most characteristic types of doctors’ behaviour. These are: Communication (COM), Emotional Barriers (EMO), Partnership (PAR), Support (SUP) as well as Empathy and Compassion (EMP). The first of the constructed factors (8 items) focuses on statements concerning a doctor’s communication with a patient (COM), while the second factor (8 items) pertains to statements connected with the emotional context of breaking bad news by the physician (EMO). Next factor (5 items) includes statements about partnership (PAR). The fourth factor (5 items) concerns the ability to build a supportive environment (SUP). The last factor (8 items) comprises statements concerning partnership, refers to building a supportive environment and the doctor’ s empathy and compassion (SUP). Conclusions: Results of the Breaking Bad News Skills tool analyses indicate that it should be recommended for further scientific research and used in many areas of psychological and social practice.
Celem pracy jest identyfikacja czynników determinujących efektywną komunikację pomiędzy lekarzem i pacjentem, a także stworzenie narzędzia oceniającego umiejętności lekarzy w zakresie przekazywania złych wiadomości rodzinie pacjenta. Materiał i metody: W badaniu zastosowano metody kwestionariuszowe w grupie 94 lekarzy z trzech szpitali w Małopolsce. Kwestionariusz Przekazywania Złych Wiadomości (Breaking Bad News Skills, BBNS), autorstwa Wioletty Szwed-Łopaty i Jakuba Lickiewicza, opisuje zachowanie lekarza w kontakcie z rodziną pacjenta. Wyniki: W celu określenia struktury czynników Kwestionariusza Przekazywania Złych Wiadomości zastosowano eksploracyjną analizę czynnikową. Do określenia liczby czynników użyto kryterium wykresu osypiska. Do oceny adekwatności doboru próby do badania wykorzystano miarę Kaisera– Mayera–Olkina (KMO) oraz test sferyczności Bartletta. Analiza czynnikowa wykazała pięć czynników odwołujących się do najbardziej typowych zachowań lekarzy. Są to: Komunikacja (COM), Bariera Emocjonalna (EMO), Partnerstwo (PAR), Wsparcie (SUP) oraz Empatia i Współczucie (EMP). Pierwszy z utworzonych czynników (8 pytań) skupia twierdzenie dotyczące komunikacji lekarza z pacjentem (COM), drugi (8 pytań) koncentruje się bardziej na twierdzeniach związanych z kontekstem emocjonalnym, jaki towarzyszy lekarzowi w czasie przekazywania złych wiadomości (EMO). Kolejny czynnik (5 pytań) obejmuje twierdzenie dotyczące kontekstu o charakterze partnerskim (PAR). Czwarty czynnik (5 pytań) dotyczy budowania środowiska wspierającego (SUP). Ostatni czynnik obejmuje 4 pytania związane z empatią i współczuciem lekarza (EMP). Wnioski: Wyniki analiz statystycznych wskazują, że Kwestionariusz Przekazywania Złych Wiadomości powinien być używany w dalszych badaniach naukowych, jak również może być zastosowany w wielu obszarach praktyki psychologicznej.

The purpose of the study is to analyze the dynamics of regional disparities on NUTS 2 level in Poland for the period 1990–2017 within the framework of sigma convergence. We focus in particular on comparing the patterns of regional convergence before and after EU accession, introducing the methodology of parallel sigma convergence. The results show that the Mazowieckie voivodeship grew much above the average in both the pre-and post-accession periods, while eastern regions lagged behind. EU accession did not have a significant impact on the pattern of internal sigma convergence in Poland. Disparities between regions were increasing at the same pace before and after 2004, despite significant resources having been allocated to cohesion-focused undertakings after EU accession, especially in lagging eastern regions.

A parallel realization of the NDDO-WF technique for semi-empirical quantum-chemical calculations on large molecular systems in the spd-basis is described. The technological aspects of designing scalable parallel calculations on super computers (by using MPI library) are discussed. The scaling of individual algorithms and entire package was carried out for two model systems with a number of atomic orbitals of 894 and 2014, respectively. The speedup was determined in computer experiments with the RM600 E60 and Cluster Intel PIII multi-processor systems. The effect of communication rate on the package performance is discussed.

An application of parallel computation capabilities in the MATLAB language for the analysis of experimental data concerning the heat transfer coefficient on ribbed walls is presented in this paper. A description of the experimental study, mathematical model and numerical implementation is also given. The obtained results of measurements and calculations shown here clearly indicate the influence of ribbed walls on the heat transfer coefficient distribution in an internal, subsonic flow.

Opis:
Mutation testing – a fault-based technique for software testing – is a computationally expensive approach. One of the powerful methods to improve the performance of mutation without reducing effectiveness is to employ parallel processing, where mutants and tests are executed in parallel. This approach reduces the total time needed to accomplish the mutation analysis. This paper proposes three strategies for parallel execution of mutants on multicore machines using the Parallel Computing Toolbox (PCT) with the Matlab Distributed Computing Server. It aims to demonstrate that the computationally intensive software testing schemes, such as mutation, can be facilitated by using parallel processing. The experiments were carried out on eight different Simulink models. The results represented the efficiency of the proposed approaches in terms of execution time during the testing process.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the use of parallel computing in the supervised machine learning processes in order to reduce the computation time. This way of computing has gained popularity because sequential computing is often insufficient for large scale problems like complex simulations or real time tasks. After presenting the foundations of machine learning and neural network algorithms as well as three types of parallel models, the author briefly characterized the development of the experiments carried out and the results obtained. The experiments on image recognition, ran on five sets of empirical data, prove a significant reduction in calculation time compared to classical algorithms. At the end, possible directions of further research concerning parallel optimization of calculation time in the supervised perceptron learning processes were shortly outlined.

W artykule zostały porównane możliwości zrównoleglenia dwóch algorytmów z dziedziny kryptografii: szyfrowania XOR oraz wyszukiwania kolizji funkcji skrótu MD5. Prezentowane rozwiązania zostały zaimplementowane w taki sposób, by używały wybraną przez użytkownika liczbę rdzeni procesora. Wydajność algorytmów została sprawdzona na różnych procesorach i przedstawiona na wykresach.
Paper compares possibility to parallelize two cryptographic algorithms: Xor cipher and MD5 collision search. Presented solutions allows user to specify number of used processors. Performance of algorithms where tested on a different types of processors and visualized on graphs.

This paper explores nostalgic memories from an unconventional perspective and their complex relationship with parallel universes. The arrow of time is not necessarily linear, and nostalgic memories pertaining to the past or the future, be it in this world or in parallel universes, could be accessed in various states of consciousness. Whatever is inside (in the internal environment of an individual) is outside (in the external environment), which is in line with esoteric teachings and individualistic experiences. The Indian concept of Maya (illusion) that applies to the material world, acts as a hindrance to experiencing Brahman or the ultimate Truth. Until one is able to perceive the infinitely connected universe in all its gigantic underlying unity, it may be posited that nostalgic memories exist in parallel universes.

A computer simulation of an atomic fluid on a GPU was implemented using the CUDA architecture. It was shown that the programming model for efficient numerical computing applications was changing with the development of the CUDA architecture. The introduction of the L2 cache decreased the latency between the global GPU memory and the registers. The performed MD simulation using the global memory and registers showed that the average acceleration relative to the CPU reached 80 times for single-precision calculations. Usually, the shared block memory gives much better results for this kind of calculation. We have found that using the shared memory gives acceleration over 116 times in comparison to the CPU. It is about 49% faster than using the global memory and registers. It is shown here that the performance of generally available graphics cards for double-precision calculations is significantly lower than for single-precision calculations. The recorded double-precision acceleration relative to the CPU in our experiment averaged 6 and 7 times for the global and shared memory, respectively. We performed these calculations on two different CUDA enable device systems.

The aim of the study was to perform bioelectric signal analysis focusing on its applicability to control of the electro-hydraulic servo drive. The natural bioelectric signals generated by brain, facial muscles and eye muscles read by the NIA (Neural Impulse Actuator) are translated into control commands in the controller of electro-hydraulic servo drive. Bioelectric signals detected by means of special forehead band with three sensors are sent to the actuator box, where they are interpreted as control signals. The test stand was constructed to control of the electro-hydraulic servo drive by means of bioelectric signals generated by the operator. The control signals from the actuator box are transmitted via a wireless network to the controller of electro-hydraulic positioning drive.

Today, in-process force measurement is required by many manufacturing applications, such as process monitoring, quality assurance, or adaptive process control. A very promising force measurement approach bases on sensor-integration into the machine structure and is particularly suitable for hexapod structures and kinematics, where it allows a measurement in 6 degrees of freedom. On the other hand, a sensor integration also affects the machine. Especially for strain-gauge-based force sensors, a stiffness reduction is predicted, as their measuring principle requires a deformation. The practical consequences of these influences are investigated in this contribution. In particular, this work presents extensive experimental studies of the stiffness change caused by sensor integration for a single hexapod strut as well as for the complete hexapod machine tool. The results are evaluated in comparison to compliances of other components, such as the kinematic joints, and to stiffness changes resulting from sensor-integration into the end-effector or the application of a commercial force/torque sensor at the end-effector. In conclusion, the studies support the approach of structure-integrated force measurement for parallel kinematics, as the stiffness loss is rather small in many cases.

Three-dimensional isogeometric analysis (IGA-FEM) is a modern method for simulation. The idea is to utilize B-splines or NURBS basis functions for both computational domain descriptions and engineering computations. Refined isogeometric analysis (rIGA) employs a mixture of patches of elements with B-spline basis functions and C 0 separators between them. This enables a reduction in the computational cost of direct solvers. Both IGA and rIGA come with challenging sparse matrix structures that are expensive to generate. In this paper, we show a hybrid parallelization method using hybrid-memory parallel machines. The two-level parallelization includes the partitioning of the computational mesh into sub-domains on the first level (MPI) and loop parallelization on the second level (OpenMP). We show that the hybrid parallelization of the integration reduces the contribution of this phase significantly. We compare the multi-frontal solver and alternating direction solver, including the integration and the factorization phases.

W artykule przedstawiono równoległy algorytm estymacji parametrów składowych sinusoidalnych złożonego sygnału. Proponowany algorytm umożliwia rozpoznanie składowych sygnału również w warunkach, gdy dysponujemy ograniczoną liczbą losowo pobranych próbek tego sygnału. Zbadany został czas pracy zaproponowanego algorytmu w funkcji liczby równocześnie uruchomionych wątków. Do testowania zostały zastosowane komputery o różnej liczbie rdzeni procesora, obsługiwanych wątków oraz zmiennoprzecinkowych jednostek wykonawczych. Wyniki eksperymentu pokazują, że proponowany algorytm może pracować efektywnie, nawet jeśli liczba wątków obliczeniowych przekracza liczbę jednostek wykonawczych procesora, na którym pracuje. W artykule zostały również zarysowane kierunki dalszych badań nad udoskonaleniem przedstawionego algorytmu.
The paper presents a parallel algorithm for parameter estimation of sinusoidal components of a complex signal. The proposed algorithm can identify the signal components when the number of available samples of the signal is limited. The proposed algorithm was tested on test computers equipped with different number of processor cores and floating point units. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can work efficiently even if the number of threads exceeds the number of processor cores. Directions for further research are outlined.

The increasing role of parallel trade is also of significance to the producers of pharmaceuticals, as it results in the lowering of their profits. Due to the existence of parallel trade within the EU, the supervisory role of antitrust authorities and courts over competition law compliance is of essence. This article analyses anti-competitive agreements concerning the limitation of parallel trade and attempts to assess their legal and social status. Described is also one of the most relevant judgments of the European Court of Justice concerning this issue. The article closes with final conclusions and a critical insight into the issue of parallel trade limitation.

Opis:
Today’s ETL tools provide capabilities to develop custom code as user-defined functions (UDFs) to extend the expressiveness of the standard ETL operators. However, while this allows us to easily add new functionalities, it also comes with the risk that the custom code is not intended to be optimized, e.g., by parallelism, and for this reason, it performs poorly for data-intensive ETL workflows. In this paper we present a novel framework, which allows the ETL developer to choose a design pattern in order to write parallelizable code and generates a configuration for the UDFs to be executed in a distributed environment. This enables ETL developers with minimum expertise in distributed and parallel computing to develop UDFs without taking care of parallelization configurations and complexities. We perform experiments on large-scale datasets based on TPC-DS and BigBench. The results show that our approach significantly reduces the effort of ETL developers and at the same time generates efficient parallel configurations to support complex and data-intensive ETL tasks.

The open character of the research project is stressed. The reviewer discusses in detail another parallel, between two London texts: Norwid’s The Larva and Dostoevsky’s Winter Notes on Summer Impressions. In conclusion there is a passage on the inspiring role of Skalińska’s book, which fills an important gap and draws a horizon for the future comparative research.

Opis:
Image edge detection plays a crucial role in image analysis and computer vision, it is defined as the process of finding the boundaries between objects within the considered image. The recognized edges may further be used in object recognition or image matching. In this paper a Canny image edge detector is used which gives acceptable results that can be utilized in many disciplines, but this technique is time-consuming especially when a big collection of images is analyzed. For that reason, to enhance the performance of the algorithms, a parallel platform allowing speeding up the computation is used. The scalability of a multicore supercomputer node, which is exploited to run the same routines for a collection of color images (from 2100 to 42000 images) is investigated.

The paper considers the problem of preemptive scheduling in a two-stage flowshop with parallel unrelated machines at the first stage and a single machine at the second stage. At the first stage, jobs use some additional renewable resources which are available in limited quantities. The resource requirements are of 0-1 type. The objective is minimization of the makespan. The problem is NP-hard. We develop heuristic algorithms which first solve the problem occurring at stage 1, and then find a final schedule in the flowshop. An extensive computational experiment shows that the proposed heuristic algorithms can be an efficient tool capable of finding good quality solutions.

The article presents an analysis of phase resonance conditions for the parallel RLCα circuit with supercapacitor. Supercapacitors behaviour somehow differs from classic dielectric capacitors, therefore it is necessary to develop their new mathematical models, using fractional - order differential equations. A simple fractional - order supercapacitor model has been assumed, taking into account its internal equivalent series resistance ESR too. A lossless inductance has also been assumed and relations for equivalent admittance and resonance occurence conditions have been derived in the considered parallel RLCα circuit with supercapacitor. The analysis was conducted for different fractional-order parameter α values. Derived relations have been illustrated by simulation examples. The existence of resonance frequency depends largely on the supercapacitor series resistance value.

This paper addresses issues associated with distributed computing systems and the application of mixed GPU&CPU technology to data encryption and decryption algorithms. We describe a heterogenous cluster HGCC formed by two types of nodes: Intel processor with NVIDIA graphics processing unit and AMD processor with AMD graphics processing unit (formerly ATI), and a novel software framework that hides the heterogeneity of our cluster and provides tools for solving complex scientific and engineering problems. Finally, we present the results of numerical experiments. The considered case study is concerned with parallel implementations of selected cryptanalysis algorithms. The main goal of the paper is to show the wide applicability of the GPU&CPU technology to large scale computation and data processing.

Sorting is a common problem in computer science. There are a lot of well-known sorting algorithms created for sequential execution on a single processor. Recently, many-core and multi-core platforms have enabled the creation of wide parallel algorithms. We have standard processors that consist of multiple cores and hardware accelerators, like the GPU. Graphic cards, with their parallel architecture, provide new opportunities to speed up many algorithms. In this paper, we describe the results from the implementation of a few different parallel sorting algorithms on GPU cards and multi-core processors. Then, a hybrid algorithm will be presented, consisting of parts executed on both platforms (a standard CPU and GPU). In recent literature about the implementation of sorting algorithms in the GPU, a fair comparison between many core and multi-core platforms is lacking. In most cases, these describe the resulting time of sorting algorithm executions on the GPU platform and a single CPU core.

The big data concept has elicited studies on how to accurately and efficiently extract valuable information from such huge dataset. The major problem during big data mining is data dimensionality due to a large number of dimensions in such datasets. This major consequence of high data dimensionality is that it affects the accuracy of machine learning (ML) classifiers; it also results in time wastage due to the presence of several redundant features in the dataset. This problem can be possibly solved using a fast feature reduction method. Hence, this study presents a fast HP-PL which is a new hybrid parallel feature reduction framework that utilizes spark to facilitate feature reduction on shared/distributed-memory clusters. The evaluation of the proposed HP-PL on KDD99 dataset showed the algorithm to be significantly faster than the conventional feature reduction techniques. The proposed technique required >1 minute to select 4 dataset features from over 79 features and 3,000,000 samples on a 3-node cluster (total of 21 cores). For the comparative algorithm, more than 2 hours was required to achieve the same feat. In the proposed system, Hadoop’s distributed file system (HDFS) was used to achieve distributed storage while Apache Spark was used as the computing engine. The model development was based on a parallel model with full consideration of the high performance and throughput of distributed computing. Conclusively, the proposed HP-PL method can achieve good accuracy with less memory and time compared to the conventional methods of feature reduction. Extraction and Presentation of Bilingual Correspondences from Slovak-Bulgarian Parallel CorpusIn this paper the results of the automatic extraction and presentation of bilingual correspondences from Slovak-Bulgarian Parallel corpus are described. The equivalent phrases are extracted from sentence and word level automatically aligned corpus, filtered, indexed and presented in a dictionary-like interface. The bilingual dictionary database contains 80 thousand phrase pairs consisting of approximately 350 thousand words (per each language). Counting unique word forms, the size is 31 thousand in the Slovak part of the dictionary, 26 thousand in the Bulgarian part.

Forms of Address as Discrete Modal OperatorsThe category of expressions of politeness includes, among others, forms of address. Forms of address express honorification. Honorification can be defined as a special type of meaning that consists of information about the social and interpersonal relations between the speaker and the addressee, the speaker and the hearer, and the speaker and the protagonist of the predication. As far as their place in the syntactic structure is concerned, forms of address can either be integrated with the other elements of a predication or not. However, they are always part of a predication’s semantic structure. Moreover, forms of address convey the speaker’s attitude to the meaning of the predicate that they want to convey, which consequently means that forms of address also carry a modal element. Modality can be defined as a situation in which an individual is in a particular mental state, i.e. exhibits some kind of attitude to a situation or a type of situations.Forms of address can be categorised as modal operators conveying imperatives, requests, suppositions, etc. The term "operator" can be used for a unit of language when it changes the semantic structure of the predication. My research on honorification is mainly based on contemporary corpora, both monolingual and multilingual. In the present study, I analyse forms of address which carry imperative and optative meanings. Formy adresatywne jako dyskretne operatory modalneW obrębie wyrażeń realizujących funkcje grzecznościowe znajduje się grupa form adresatywnych. Są one częścią kategorii honoryfikatywności rozumianej jako szczególny rodzaj znaczenia zawartego w treści wypowiedzi, informację o towarzysko-społecznej relacji między nadawcą a odbiorcą, nadawcą a słuchaczem oraz nadawcą a bohaterem wypowiedzi. Gramatycznie formy adresatywne mogą być zarówno zintegrowane, jak i niezintegrowane syntaktycznie z resztą wypowiedzi, ale zawsze są częścią semantycznej struktury zdania. Wyrażają one także stosunek mówiącego do komunikatu, jaki przekazuje odbiorcom komunikatu, i tym samym mają przekaz modalny. Przez modalność autor rozumie sytuację, w której dane indywiduum (osoba) znajduje się w danym stanie mentalnym, tj. ma określony stosunek do szeregu sytuacji i typów sytuacji.Formy adresatywne można uznać za dyskretne operatory modalne zawierające takie treści, jak: rozkazuję ci, życzę sobie, przypuszczam i in. Termin ,,operator" używany jest w przypadkach, w których możemy go wskazać jako nośnika zmian w semantycznej strukturze zdania. Współczesne badania nad honoryfikatywnością autor opiera głównie na obecnie opracowywanych narodowych korpusach wielojęzycznych równoległych i jednojęzycznych i analizuje formy adresatywne o znaczeniu imperatywnym i optatywnym.

The methods of the tolerance ellipsoidal estimation for the tasks of synthesis of the tolerances to parameters of radio-electronic circuits and possibility of its parallelization are considered. These methods are the result of the task of estimation the solutions of an interval system of linear algebraic equations (ISLAE) which is built according to given criteria of optimality. The numerical algorithm is proposed for solving the tolerance ellipsoidal estimation tasks with a possibility of parallelization.
