Opis:
The paper presents results of investigations of a novel method for diesel exhaust filtration in a fibrous filter supplemented by the external electrostatic field (FEF), which may be used to eliminate the occupational hazard near sources of diesel emission. The reported research follows the preliminary basic study of soot removal in such systems (Ciach, Sosnowski, & Podgorski, 1995), and is focused on the construction and testing of a prototype technical-scale FEF device. The results suggest a strong relation between applied voltage and filtration efficiency of the system and demonstrate the influence of aerosol precharging on the efficiency, which can be more than 95%.

Materiał i metody Do pobierania próbek powietrza na stanowiskach pracy maszyn i urządzeń emitujących SSD zlokalizowanych na powierzchni do oznaczania EC wykorzystano próbnik kasetowy bez impaktora z filtrem kwarcowym, a w przypadku pomiarów w kopalniach niewęglowych – próbnik do frakcji respirabilnej typu Higgins-Dewell Cyclone FH022. Do oznaczania EC zastosowano metodę analizy termo-optycznej węgla z wykorzystaniem detektora płomieniowo-jonizacyjnego. Med. Pr. 2023;74(2)
Background This paper presents and discusses the results of the determination of elemental carbon emitted in diesel engine exhaust into the air of workplaces where machines and equipment with diesel engines are used. In order to assess occupational exposure to elemental carbon (EC) as a marker of exhaust gases emitted by diesel engines, 51 ground-based workplaces where people who operate or maintain equipment with this type of engine work were measured. Measurements were also carried out at 9 workplaces in non-coal mines. Material and Methods For air sampling at workplaces of diesel exhaust emitting machines and equipment located on the surface, a cartridge sampler without an impactor with a quartz filter was used for elemental carbon determination, while for measurements in non-coal mines the Higgins-Dewell Cyclone FH022 respirable fraction sampler was used. The thermo-optical carbon analysis method using a flame ionisation detector was used to determine elemental carbon. Results Analysis of the results of the determined elemental carbon concentrations at workplaces located on the ground, i.e., in car repair shops, and in the steelworks where combustion forklifts are operated, showed that the highest concentrations of elemental carbon were determined at the old forklift workplaces in the steelworks. The determined EC concentrations at these workstations were 353 μg/m³ and 78 μg/m³, respectively. In the non-coal mines, elemental carbon concentrations were in the range of 7.5–50 μg/m³. Conclusions Exposure assessment at the surveyed workplace in the steelworks showed the highest 7-fold exceedance of the maximum admissible concentration (MAC) at the position of the combustion forklift operator. At the other surveyed workplaces in the car repair shop the marked concentrations were in the range of 0.1–0.5 MAC or <0.1 MAC. In non-coal mines, the determined concentrations ranged 0.12–1 times the MAC. Med Pr. 2023;74(2)

Opis:
The exhaust gases from marine diesel engines contain high SO2 and NOx concentration. The applicability of the electron beam flue gas treatment technology for purification of marine diesel exhaust gases containing high SO2 and NOx concentration gases was the main goal of this paper. The study was performed in the laboratory plant with NOx concentration up to 1700 ppmv and SO2 concentration up to 1000 ppmv. Such high NOx and SO2 concentrations were observed in the exhaust gases from marine high-power diesel engines fuelled with different heavy fuel oils. In the first part of study the simulated exhaust gases were irradiated by the electron beam from accelerator. The simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx were obtained and their removal efficiencies strongly depend on irradiation dose and inlet NOx concentration. For NOx concentrations above 800 ppmv low removal efficiencies were obtained even if applied high doses. In the second part of study the irradiated gases were directed to the seawater scrubber for further purification. The scrubbing process enhances removal efficiencies of both pollutants. The SO2 removal efficiencies above 98.5% were obtained with irradiation dose greater than 5.3 kGy. For inlet NOx concentrations of 1700 ppmv the NOx removal efficiency about 51% was obtained with dose greater than 8.8 kGy. Methods for further increase of NOx removal efficiency are presented in the paper.

Doświadczalnie (waga Langmuird) i teoretycznie (dynamika molekularna) badano oddziaływania fizykochemiczne między benzo[a]pirenem (BAP) i głównym składnikiem surfaktantu płucnego, DPPC.
Physicochemical interactions between benzo[a]pyrene (BAP) and a basic constituent of lung surfactant, DPPC, were studied experimentally (Lang-muir balance) and theoretically (molecular dynamic approach). Changes in dynamic surface tension and compressibility of DPPC film at air - water interface were observed and explained by the incorporation of BAP molecules into DPPC monolayer. Similar phenomena can be of importance during oscillations of lung surface during breathing, so the results suggest a potential mechanism of health effects from diesel exhaust gases inhalation.

Opis:
Ambient particulate matter (PM) is a component of the natural environment and a certain number of particles that varies with time, having many different properties which also change over time, is constantly present in the air. It can be assumed that the scope of environmental effects of PM is the broadest among all air pollutants: it affects the human health, climate, ecological conditions and visibility. Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) are the two most important components of suspended dust. The continuously increasing road traffic intensity is highly correlated with increasing concentrations of both of these components in the air of urbanized areas all over the world. In spite of this, the amount of data on OC and EC concentrations in Poland is still insufficient, especially in the case of areas located close to busy roads. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of vehicular traffic on ambient concentrations of PM-related OC and EC, and their mass size distribution in a typical urban area of the Upper Silesia. PM samples were collected simultaneously at two sites located in the Katowice city. One of the selected measurement points was situated in the city centre and characterized so-called urban background. The second measurement point, located near the A4 motorway, was in the area directly exposed to the influence of traffic emission. Dust was sampled during two measurement periods (2–10 August and 15–22 September 2011) using thirteen-stage impactors – DEKATI Ltd. (DLPI, Dekati Low Pressure Impactor). Analysis for the content of OC and EC in the collected dust samples was carried out by means of a thermo-optical method with the use of a Sunset Laboratory OC/EC carbon analyzer. During the entire measurement program strict adherence to the rigorous requirements for quality control of the obtained results was ensured. Concentrations of PM1-, PM2.5- and PM10-related OC and EC in Katowice, near the A4 motorway, were close to values obtained in other parts of the world in different measurement periods, at traffic sites of similar characteristics. Also values of the concentration ratio of OC bound to PM10 and PM2,5 (or PM2,5) were similar to quantities determined in different locations. In Katowice, due to municipal emission and poor quality of vehicles travelling the roads, also the coarse fraction of dust was enriched in EC. This situation is unusual in comparison to other regions. The effect of emission from engines of the cars travelling the motorway manifested itself mainly by elevated EC concentrations compared to the urban background site. For TSP the EC concentration was higher, five times in the beginning of August and two times in the second half of September. The largest differences between EC concentrations in the location near the motorway and in the urban background area were observed for the PM0.06–0.108, PM0.108–0.17 and PM0.17–0.26 fractions. In both measurement periods, at the traffic site in Katowice, the maxima of mass size distribution of EC were in the diameter range characteristic for soot emitted from Diesel engines (0.108–0.26µm). The fact that the influence of exhaust emission from vehicles travelling the motorway on EC concentrations was more pronounced in the second half of September than in the first half of August, was caused by larger EC emission from various sources in Katowice during the period following summer holidays. Concentrations of organic carbon bound to TSP in both measurement periods in Katowice was only 10% higher in the urban traffic site than in the urban background site. The largest differences between OC concentrations near the motorway and in the urban background are observed in the ranges 0.06–0.17 and 1.0–2.5 µm. Maxima of the mass size distribution of PM-related OC, both at the urban traffic site and at the background site, were similar in both measurement periods. It was inferred that the small differences between OC concentrations in the traffic and the background site are caused by the process of secondary aerosol formation, less intensive near the motorway than in the urban site.

Opis:
W warunkach narażenia ostrego spaliny wywołują podrażnienie błon śluzowych oczu i górnych dróg oddechowych, bóle oraz zawroty głowy, zmęczenie i nudności. Cząstki stałe zawarte w spalinach indukują nowotwory płuc u zwierząt doświadczalnych, głównie gruczolaki i gruczolakoraki, przy czym jedynie u szczurów zmiany te były znamienne statystycznie i powtarzalne.
Diesel exhaust contains components of complete combustion such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide and of incomplete combustion such as nitrogen oxides, carbon, monoxide, hydrocarbons, aldehydes, phenols, sulfur compounds, which can cause irritation of the upper respiratory track. Diesel exhaust also produces submicron-sized particles that cause soiling and poor visibility. These particles have been regarded as presenting only a minimal health risk; however, the presence of carcinogens adsorbed on the particles has raised concerns about the potential for lung cancer from exposure to diesel exhaust. Therefore, to establish MAC values for diesel exhaust data from studies on carcinogenic effects in laboratory animals were considered. A linear model was used in considering assessment of the risk for the worker population. Based on acceptable risk 10-3 MAC value for diesel exhaust was calculated to be 0.5 mg/m3. No MAC-STEL values have been established.

Opis:
Particulate matter and chemical substances adsorbed by it, such as carcinogenic PAHs, are of massive significance and may negatively impact human health due to the place where they accumulate within the human body, as mentioned in the introduction. The conducted studies have indicated that in addition to diesel engines, also petrol engines may be a potential source of environmental pollution with ultra-fine particles. The text presents the results of the study of carcinogenic substances (PAH) in particulate matter emitted in the exhaust gases of diesel and petrol engines. An Electric Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) was used to measure the size of particulate matter in real time and to establish the distribution of particulate matter size present in the exhaust gases. Also using the ELPI, fractions smaller than 0.25 µm were separated and then, in order to establish PAH concentrations, the material collected on the impactor level filters cutting off the 0.4-0.03 µm fractions was analysed. The observed numerical, dimensional, surface, volume and mass concentration distribution values for the exhaust gases from a petrol engine corresponded to, respectively, 0.93; 0.75; 0.89; 2.05; and 1.38% of the values recorded for diesel exhaust gases. The calculated aver-age PAH concentrations adsorbed on small fractions for emissions from the tested engines also indicated a reduction of emissions of tested compounds in the case of petrol engine operation. The largest total PAH concentration, i.e. 35 ng, was marked in fractions smaller than 0.1 µm of fine particulate matter emitted in diesel engine exhaust, whereas in the case of a petrol engine, it amounted to 11 ng m-3 and was marked in the 0.4 µm fraction. Benzo(a)pyrene was at a maximum concentration of 1.3 ng m-3 in the fine particulate matter fraction with the aerodynamic diameter of 0.1 µm in the diesel engine exhaust gases and respectively in the 0.4 µm fraction in the petrol engine exhaust gases. Measurements have indicated that the particulate matter in fraction below 0.4 µm is emitted into the environment by the emissions from diesel engine exhaust and, to a lesser degree, also from petrol engine exhaust. The studies have not indicated the tendency of individual PAH com-pounds to be adsorbed only on single fractions of particulate matter with specific dimensions.

Objectives Diesel exhaust fumes emission is a significant source of ultrafine particles, the size of which is expressed in nanometers. People occupationally exposed to diesel exhaust particles include mainly workers servicing vehicles with engines of this type. This article presents the analysis of measurements of ultrafine particle concentrations occurring in the bus depot premises during the work connected with everyday technical servicing of buses. Material and Methods The measurements were carried out in the everyday servicing (ES) room of the bus depot before, during and after the work connected with bus servicing. Determinations included: particle concentrations in terms of particle number and particle surface area, and mass concentrations of aerosol. Results Mean value of number concentration of 10- to 1000-nm particles increased almost 20-fold, from 7600 particles/cm³ before starting bus servicing procedures to 130 000 particles/cm³ during the bus servicing procedures in the room. During the procedures, the mean surface area concentration of particles potentially deposited in the alveolar (A) region was almost 3 times higher than that of the particles depositing in the tracheo-bronchial (TB) region: 356.46 μm²/cm³ vs. 95.97 μm²/cm³, respectively. The mass concentration of the fraction of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter 0.02–1 μm (PM₁) increased 5-fold during the analyzed procedures and was 0.042 mg/m³ before, and 0.298 mg/m³ while the procedures continued. Conclusions At the time when bus servicing procedures continued in the ES room, a very high increase in all parameters of the analyzed particles was observed. The diesel exhaust particles exhibit a very high degree of fragmentation and, while their number is very high and their surface area is very large, their mass concentration is relatively low. The above findings confirm that ultrafine particles found in diesel exhaust fumes may be harmful to the health of the exposed people, and to their respiratory tract in particular.

BackgroundExposure to fine and ultrafine particles from transport processes is a main consequence of emissions from engines, especially those with self-ignition. The particles released in these processes are a source of occupational and environmental particles exposure. The aim of this study was to assess the fine and nano-sized particles emission degree during work connected with transport and vehicle servicing.Material and MethodsThe tests were carried out at 3 workplaces of vehicles service and maintenance (a car repair workshop, a truck service hall, and a bus depot) during 1 work day in each of them. Measurements were performed using the following devices: DISCmini meters, GRIMM 1.109 optical counter and the DustTrak monitor. The number, surface area and mass concentration, and the number size distribution were analyzed.ResultsThe mean number concentration (DISCmini) increased during the analyzed processes, ranging from 4×104 p/cm3 to 8×104 p/cm3, and the highest concentration was found in the car repair workshop. The particles mean diameters during the processes ranged 31–47 nm, depending on the process. An increase in the surface area concentration value was observed in correlation with the particles number, and its highest concentration (198 m2/cm3) was found during work in the car repair workshop. The number size distribution analysis (GRIMM 1.109) showed the maximum value of the number concentration for particles sized 60 nm. The mean mass concentrations increased during the tested processes by approx. 40–70%, as compared to the background.ConclusionsAccording to the measurement results, all the workplaces under study constituted a source of an increase in all analyzed parameters characterizing emissions of nano-sized particles. Such working environment conditions can be harmful to the exposed workers; therefore, at such workplaces solutions for minimizing workers’ exposure, such as fume hoods or respiratory protection, should be used. Identification and determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Diesel exhaust in the working environment and assessment of workers’ occupational exposure to these suspected human carcinogens were the aim of this experimental investigation. The range of exposure factors calculated on the basis of 9 individual PAH concentrations determined in personal air samples shows that time-averaged concentration of these compounds did not exceed the Polish Maximum Admissible Concentration (MAC) value for PAHs, that is, 2 µg x m-3. The highest concentrations of PAHs were determined in the breathing zone of forklift operators. The maximum exposure factor was 0.427 µg x m-3(about 1/4 of MAC).

Opis:
A method for measuring exhaust smoke opacity has been developed, which allows estimating the differentiated components forming black exhaust and those forming white smoke. The method is based on video recording and special software for processing the video recording data. The flow of the diesel exhaust gas is visualised using the digital camera, against the background of the screen, on a cut of an exhaust pipe, and with sufficient illumination of the area. The screen represents standards of whiteness and blackness. The content of the black components (soot) is determined by the degree of blackening of the white standard in the frames of the video, and the content of whitish components (unburned fuel and oil, etc.) is determined by the degree of whitening of black standard on the frames of the video. The paper describes the principle and the results of testing the proposed method of measuring exhaust smoke opacity. We present an algorithm for the frame-by-frame analysis of the video sequence, and static and dynamic mathematical models of exhaust opacity, measured under free-acceleration of a diesel engine.

The suggestions appearing in the public dispute about the „technological death” of internal combustion engines in mining vehicles with diesel engines in underground mining plants in favor of the alternative drives are not completely true. It is also indicated that the new value of the Occupational Exposure Limit has been established for exhaust gases emitted from diesel engines, which will apply from 02.22.2026. for the underground mining and tunneling sectors, a level of 0.05 mg / m3 (measured as elemental carbon) may limit the using of diesel engines in mining vehicles. The new hygiene standard has been developed in order to better protect workers exposed to diesel exhaust gases in the work environment, and not to stop using diesel engines altogether. The article presents a forecast of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust in the work environment in underground mining plants after 2025 in the light of the change in the value of the hygiene standard in this regard.

Opis:
Compression ignition engines have no possibility for self-regeneration of DPF and regeneration requires additional energy for soot combustion (additional fuel or electric energy) after some period of the engine work as a result of closing of substrate pores by soot. The innovation method takes into account a self-regeneration of diesel particle filter by use of special heat recovery system. The paper shows one of possible design of DPF self-regeneration. The exhaust temperature behind the turbine and catalytic converter is very low and for an increasing of gas temperature before DPF, the heat from soot combustion can be used. The preliminary studies show a possibility of using the special design of DPF with heat recovery system. The paper presents results obtained from simulations based on one-dimensional model of such system and analysis of increasing the heat recovery ratio by change of geometry of DPF. The gas heat exchange formulas between DPF and the heat exchange model are partly included in the paper. The preliminary results of calculations show the possibility of increase of exhaust gases in front of DPF about 20%, which enables a continuous regeneration of DPF. Heat recovery ratio is depends on soot combustion rate on the wall of DPF monolith. The method enables to recover some part of energy which is lost in the conventional DPF. The paper is a part of further work in European project FP6 IPSY.

Opis:
Current and future air quality is a worldwide concern, which has resulted in both a continuous tightening of emissions legislation for vehicles and a parallel tightening of fuel specifications. The automotive and oil industry across the globe especially in EU, USA and Japan have in each case made considerable efforts to understand the relationship between vehicle emissions, urban air quality, engine technologies and fuels, and to meet the more and more stringent legislation. The supply of automotive fuels today is based almost entirely on petroleum. The quality requirements of diesel fuels become more and more stricter and it will continue in the next decades, because the clean engines need clean fuels. Therefore, fuels of low emission become significant factor in reducing toxic emission which pollutes the environment. With the introduce of low sulfur diesel fuel, the effect of sulfur become less significant. Other fuel properties such as aromatics content i.e. composition thus becomes more important. From this aspect it is investigated the affect of simultaneous addition of mono+-, di+ - and tri+-aromatics into low-sulfur diesel fuel. Obtained results show that aromatics composition has the effect on diesel exhaust emission.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of on-road exhaust emission tests of passenger car fitted with diesel engine, and a DPF (diesel particulate filter). Under such conditions the author could determine the actual vehicle emissions. The tests were performed on a road portion of a fifty kilometres or so - these tests provide information on the on-road emissions and are a basis for their ecological evaluation. For the measurement of the exhaust emissions the authors used a portable exhaust emissions analyzer SEMTECH DS by Sensors Inc. The analyzer measured the concentration of the exhaust components at the same time measuring the exhaust mass flow. The measurements of the particulate matter (mass) were done with the use of particle analyzer by AVL. The obtained data were used to calculate the relations that characterize the influence of the dynamic engine parameters on the exhaust emissions. These properties were taken into account indirectly using the whole range of speeds and accelerations of the vehicle (engine speeds and loads of the engine) for the preparation of the matrices of the emissions rate. The used data were averaged within individual speed and acceleration ranges thus obtaining the characteristics of the share of operation in individual ranges and the characteristics of the emission matrices of the individual emission components. The above results served for defining of the emission level indicator of the vehicles that can be used for classification of vehicle fleet in terms of their emission level.

Opis:
The article discusses the effect of fuel dose division in the Diesel engine on smoke opacity and composition of the emitted exhaust gas. The research activities reported in the article include experimental examination of a small Diesel engine with Common Rail type supply system. The tests were performed on the engine test bed equipped with an automatic data acquisition system which recorded all basic operating and control parameters of the engine, and smoke opacity and composition of the exhaust gas. The parameters measured during the engine tests also included the indicated pressure and the acoustic pressure. The tests were performed following the pre-established procedure in which 9 engine operation points were defined for three rotational speeds: 1500, 2500 and 3500 rpm, and three load levels: 25, 40 and 75 Nm. At each point, the measurements were performed for 7 different forms of fuel dose injection, which were: the undivided dose, the dose divided into two or three parts, and three different injection advance angles for the undivided dose and that divided into two parts. The discussion of the obtained results includes graphical presentation of contests of hydrocarbons, carbon oxide, and nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas, and its smoke opacity. The presented analyses referred to two selected cases, out of nine examined engine operation points. In these cases the fuel dose was divided into three parts and injected at the factory set control parameters. The examination has revealed a significant effect of fuel dose division on the engine efficiency, and on the smoke opacity and composition of the exhaust gas, in particular the content of nitrogen oxides. Within the range of low loads and rotational speeds, dividing the fuel dose into three parts clearly improves the overall engine efficiency and significantly decreases the concentration of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas. Moreover, it slightly decreases the contents of hydrocarbons and carbon oxide. In the experiment the contents of nitrogen oxides markedly increased with the increasing injection advance angle for the undivided dose and that divided into two parts. This, in turn, led to the decrease of the contents of hydrocarbons and carbon oxide. Fuel dose division into two and three parts leads to the increase of smoke opacity of the exhaust gas, compared to the undivided dose.

Opis:
The results of CFD modelling a dual fuel diesel engine powered with both methanol and diesel fuel is presented in the paper. Modelling was performed with 20 and a 50% energetic share of methanol in the entire dose. The analysis was conducted on both the thermodynamic parameters and exhaust toxicity of dual fuel engine. It was found that the various share of methanol influences the ignition delay of the combustion process and after start of main phase of combustion, the process occurs faster than in case of the diesel engine. It was found that the time of 10-90% burn of the fuel is much shorter than it is in the diesel engine. The dual fuel engine was characterized by higher indicated mean pressure in the whole range of diesel fuel injection timings. While analysing toxic exhaust emission from the dual fuel engine powered with methanol, it was found that the rate of NO formation was significantly higher than from the diesel engine. The combustion process in the dual fuel engine occurs more rapidly than in the conventional diesel engine, which contributes to form areas with high temperature, and in combination with presence of oxygen from the air and oxygen bonded in the methanol, promotes the NO formation. In the case of the dual fuel engine, it was found that soot emission was reduced. The engine running with diesel injection start at 8.5 deg before TDC, the soot emissions were more than twice lower in the dual fuel engine, while the emission of NO was much higher.

The article presents bench test results of a four-stroke, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated, DI diesel engine operating with neat JP-8 fuel (J) and its blends with Diesel fuel (D) in following proportions by volume: 90/10 (J+10D), 70/30 (J+D30), 50/ 50 (J+D50), 30/70 (J+D70), and 100% diesel fuel (DF). The purpose of the research was to analyse and compare changes occurred in the autoignition delay, combustion events, engine performance efficiency, emissions, and smoke of the exhaust when running on JP-8 fuel, jet-diesel fuel blends, and diesel fuel at a full (100%) engine load and speed of 1400 min–1 at which maximum torque occurs and rated speed of 2200 min–1. It was found that the start of injection (SOI) and the start of combustion (SOC) occurred earlier in an engine cycle and the autoignition delay decreased by 9.0% and 12.7% due to replacement of aviation JP-8 fuel with diesel fuel at a full load and the latter speeds. Maximum in-cylinder pressure was 6.8% and 4.0% higher when operating with diesel fuel, whereas brake thermal efficiency was 3.3% and 7.7% higher, and brake specific fuel consumption 2.8% and 7.0% lower when using fuel blend J+D50 compared with the respective values measured with neat JP-8 fuel. Emissions of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were 13.3% and 13.1% higher from a straight diesel running at speed of 1400 min–1, and 19.0% and 19.5% higher at a higher speed of 2200 min–1. The carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and total unburned hydrocarbons (HC) decreased 2.1 times and by 12.3% when running with fuel blend J+D70 at speed of 2200 min–1 compared with those values measured with jet fuel. Smoke of the exhaust was 53.1% and 1.9% higher when using fuel blend J+D10 than that of 46.9% and 70.0% measured with jet fuel at speeds of 1400 and 2200 min–1. The engine produced 34.5% more smoke from combustion of fuel blend J+D70 at the low speed of 1400 min–1, but smoke converted to be 11.3% lower when operating at a higher speed of 2200 min–1.

Opis:
The common demands for environmental protection in shipping are being recognized by IMO, through development of the rules with respect to SOx and NOx. This paper investigates the results of fuel injection variables, affecting cylinder process performance and exhaust gas emission. The effect of injection assembly design attributed on NO emission was estimated. The similar slow speed, large bore MAN B&W engines performance were compared. The main factors used for evaluation were: fuel consumption, rotational speed, mean and maximum in-cylinder pressures and total concentrations of NOx, CO2, O2i CO, and HC. The engines performance and NO emission were compared with conventional 6S60MC-C and latest — electronically controlled 7S60ME-C. The CFD simulation of combustion and pollutant formation was created to represent processes of a marine large bore engine. The SMC-C engine operation and standard injection nozzle design was taken as a baseline for comparison with measured NO concentration. The predicted cylinder pressures showed reasonable agreement with experimental measurements. The predictive ability of used CFD simulation package was found to be quantitatively insufficient in terms of NOx emission. However, the predicted NO emission exhibits similar sensitivity with experiment results. The quantitative set of reference data for the validation of simulation results needs to be substantially improved. The determination offuel injection and cylinder pressure history can be identified as the most important source of inaccuracy. Finally, weighted NOx specific emission factor for both engines shows close value, sufficiently placed against IMO limit presented in Fig. 11. The results are promising and show that controlled combustion process is capable of fulfilling present and future NOx emission requirements. Modern marine engines are designed with adjustable components to allow the engine to be adjusted for maximum efficiency or NOx weighted emission factor when used in particular application.

Currently, the Baltic Sea States suggests a proposal to designate the Baltic Sea as an Emission Control Area for nitrogen oxides, in accordance with Annex VI of MARPOL73/78. The emission would be estimated on the data produced by the AIS (Automatic Identification System) system that is compulsory for ships. Therefore, exhaust emission of the ships' can be computed using the actual speed and main propulsion shaft power. Mostly, main propulsion engines' exhaust emission is dependent to realistic performance and can be determined. This paper presents the results of the diesel engine research on the energy performance, components of exhaust gases and smoke and parameters related to the supply system for VW 1.9 TDI working in 2 modes: with standard, non-cooled EGR system, and without this system. All of measurements were carried out on the some engine speed – 2000 rpm (speed of maximum engine torque) and various engine loads. It was found that the serial engine control unit switches the EGR system off above 150 Nm engine load (Momax = 295 Nm). In this range of load the engine running with EGR is characterized by higher fuel consumption (lower total efficiency) ca. 5%, compared with engine without EGR. Concentration of NOx in exhaust gases was lower up to 45% but, at the same time, exhaust gas smoke and concentration of carbon oxides were strongly increasing. It can be seen that EGR system increases the temperature (up to 110°C) and changes the composition of air-exhaust gas in the intake manifold. One of reason of this fact is self-changing start of injection. Additional effect of EGR is lower air pressure behind turbocharger, because the flow of exhaust gases (into EGR) is taken before the turbine.

It is assumed that elements of Exhaust Gases Cleaning Systems creates additional resistance along fumes duct and can affect energetic process of combustion. In the paper are presented results of researches aimed on detection and recognition of dumping effect in the exhaust pipeline using devices dedicated for engine’s torque and angular speed measurement. The experiment was carried out in test stand of Gdynia Maritime University; equipped with one-cylinder, low speed engine working in two-stroke mode. Effect of increasing of gas flow resistance was achieved by installation of shutters in cross-section of exhaust pipe. The shutters diminished active flow „window“ for 50% of normal crossection area of the exhaust pipe The plan of measurements encompasses registration of Instantaneous Angular Speed of the engine’s shaft and parallel registration of Instantaneous Value of Shaft Torsion, what reflect fluctuation of torque. Value of angular speed and toque enables exact calculation of power produced by the engine. Experiment included measurements at different levels of engine’s load and with changes of mean rotational speed. Angular speed and shaft’s torsion were measured and recorded using system ETNP-10 which is based on optical sensor and set of toothed discs. That method gives high accuracy of angular speed and torsion measurement. Results of experiment are presented as difference of related curves of values’ variations of angular speed and torsion occurring at the propulsion shaft connecting the engine and the water brake.

Opis:
Particulate matter (PM) and gaseous compounds (SO2, NOx, VOC) emitted by diesel engines causes serious global environmental problems and health impact. Despite numerous evidences about the harmfulness of diesel particles, the PM emission by diesel engines used by ships, cars, agricultural machines, or power generators is still unregulated, and the efficient removal of PM from diesel exhausts is still the major technological challenge. In order to comply with the International Maritime Organization regulation, the NOx emission is reduced by using selected catalytic reactor, and sulphur oxide emission has been reduced by using fuels of low sulphur content. However, both of those measures cannot be used for the reduction of PM emission produced during combustion of marine fuels. The lack of appropriate regulations results from insufficiently developed technology, which could remove those particles from exhaust gases. Conventional scrubbers currently available on the market remove only sulphur oxide with required collection efficiency, but the collection efficiency for PM2.5 is below 50%. The article discusses the technical means used for the removal of PM from marine diesel engines via applying electrohydrodynamic methods, in particular electrostatic agglomeration, as a method of nanoparticles coagulation to larger agglomerates, which could operate in two-stage electrostatic precipitation systems, and electrostatic scrubbers, which remove particles by electrically charged water droplets. The experimental results were obtained for a 2-stroke 73 kW diesel engine fuelled with marine gas oil (MGO). The agglomerator allowed increasing the collection efficiency from diesel exhausts for PM2.5 particles by about 12%, compared to electrostatic precipitator operating without agglomerator, and the total mass collection efficiency was above 74%. The collection efficiency of electrostatic scrubber was higher than 95wt.%. The advantage of using the electrostatic scrubber is that it can also reduce the SO2 emission by more than 90%, when HFO is used.

Opis:
Changing selected engine structure parameters, especially fuel system parameters, affects the emission of harmful compounds in the exhaust gas. Changes in harmful compound emission are frequently ambiguous, as they highly depend on parameters controlling the combustion process. An additional problem is that simple interactions are frequently accompanied with mutual influence of these parameters. Therefore, we can say about different sensitivity of diagnostic parameters to the same excitations coming from the engine structure but executed at different loading states. When the set of diagnostic parameters is numerous and the values of these parameters are similar, there is a real problem with their correct classification, frequently based on subjective assessment by the analyst. In the article, the authors propose a methodology to classify the recorded diagnostic parameters. In earlier works by the authors [4,6,7], the information capacity index method (the Hellwig method) was proposed as the measure of diagnostic parameter sensitivity. Based on this method, a rankling of diagnostic parameters can be created which divides the set of diagnostic variables into stimulators and destimulators. Novel authors’ approach to the presented problem consists in including nominants, i.e. variables with the most favourable value for the analysed aspect of the research, in the set of diagnostic variables. This normalisation of the set is believed to be helpful for making a diagnostic decision free from analyst’s arbitrariness. The zero unitarization method can also be helpful in creating diagnostic tests.

Presented paper shows the results of the laboratory tests on the relationship between throttling of both air intake duct and exhaust gas duct and a gaseous emission from the marine engine. The object of research is a laboratory, four-stroke, DI diesel engine, operated at loads from 50 kW to 250 kW at a constant speed equal to 750 rpm. During the laboratory tests over 50 parameters of the engine were measured with its technical condition recognized as a „working properly” and with simulated leakage of both air intake valve and exhaust gas valve on the second cylinder. The results of this laboratory research confirm that the leakage of cylinder valves causes no significant changes of the thermodynamic parameters of the engine. Simulated leakages through the inlet and exhaust valve caused a significant increase in fuel consumption of the engine. Valve leakages cause an increase of the exhaust gas temperature behind the cylinder with leakage and behind other cylinders. The exhaust gas temperature increase is relatively small and clearly visible only at low loads of the engine. The increase of the temperature and pressure of the charging air behind the intercooler were observed too. Charging air temperature is significantly higher during the engine operation with inlet valve leakage. The study results show significant increases of the CO, NOx and CO2 emission for all the mentioned malfunctions. The conclusion is that the results of measurements of the composition of the exhaust gas may contain valuable diagnostic information about the technical condition of the air intake duct and the exhaust gas duct of the marine engine.

The tests showed that a diesel fuel/butanol blend, containing 10% of n-butanol, caused a significant decrease in PM and smoke emissions, had no effect on NOx and CO2 emissions and brought about higher CO and HC emissions. The most favourable fact resulting from the butanol application as diesel fuel component is that it produces desirable changes in PM/NOx trade-off.

Wstęp: W artykule przedstawiono wyniki oznaczania zawartości wielopierścieniowych węglowodorów aromatycznych (WWA) we frakcji cząstek drobnych emitowanych z 3 rodzajów paliw diesla z zastosowaniem ultraszybkiej chromatografii cieczowej. Analizę WWA osadzonych na cząstkach stałych spalin prowadzono metodą ultraszybkiej chromatografii cieczowej z detekcją fluorescencyjną (ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection – UHPLC/FL). Największą zawartość benzo(a)pirenu oznaczono w cząstkach emitowanych podczas spalania paliwa Eco i Bio, odpowiednio: 1,5 μg/g i 1 μg/g. Zastosowanie UHPLC/FL do analizy WWA w cząstkach frakcji drobnej emitowanej w spalinach diesla pozwoliło skrócić czas analizy z 35 min do 8 min. Med. Pr. 2014;65(5):601–608
Background: The article presents the results of the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the fine particles fraction emitted from 3 types of diesel fuels using ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography. Material and Methods: Samples of diesel Eco, Verwa and Bio exhaust combustion fumes were generated at the model station which consisted of a diesel engine from the 2007 Diesel TDI 2.0. Personal Cascade Sioutas Impactor (PCSI) with Teflon filters was used to collect samples of exhaust fume ultrafine particles. PAHs adsorbed on particulate fractions were analyzed by ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (UHPLC/FL). Results: Phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene and chrysene present the highest concentration in the particulate matter emitted by an engine. The total contents of fine particles collected during engine operation on fuels Eco, Verwa and Bio were 134.2 μg/g, 183.8 μg/g and 153.4 μg/g, respectively, which makes 75%, 90% and 83% of the total PAHs, respectively. The highest content of benzo(a)pyrene determined in particles emitted during the combustion of fuels Eco and Bio was 1.5 μg/g and 1 μg/g, respectively. Conclusions: The study of the PAH concentration in the particles of fine fraction below 0.25 μm emitted from different fuels designed for diesel engines indicate that the exhaust gas content of carcinogens, including PAHs deposited on particulates, is still significant, regardless of the fuel. Application of ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection for the analysis of PAHs in the particles emitted in the fine fraction of diesel exhaust allowed to shorten the analysis time from 35 min to 8 min. In 2008 the International Maritime Organization - IMO decided to strengthen the requirements for new ships from 2011 - Tier II. However, for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), such as the Baltic Sea, stringent rules will apply from 1 January 2016 for new ships - Tier III. The new standards introduce restrictions on exhaust emissions from diesel engines - NOx and SOx. The paper presents proposal of new design an existing exhaust gas system of experimental marine diesel engine, which is situated in the Laboratory of Maritime Academy in Szczecin. The conception is due to meet to new environmental regulations. Arrangements of exhaust line, CFD model of the SCR reference plant, CFD model - inlet and outlet boundary conditions, pressure loss model for the catalytic elements, simulation results - streamlines, velocity distribution, reaction progress distribution ate presented in the paper as well design description of system of laboratory- 4-stroke and turbocharged engine. . The means of the reduction systems are based on conventional marine exhaust gas installation that includes noise silencer and soot-catcher. The after-treatment methods do not introduce significant changes in engine arrangement and operation. A new gas purifying system should be installed in the engine exhaust gas system.

This paper describes the experimental method - using non-thermal plasma reactor to cleaning exhaust gases - focused on PM compound. The demonstrator NTP reactor assembly was built as the by-pass in the real exhaust gas after-treatment system, in marine diesel engine. The reactor used to experiment is called - DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) type, The main aim of investigation was to analyze exhaust gas PM compounds under steady load of the engine. Test bench construction enables direct exhaust stream (main exhaust duet by-pass) to plasma reactor exposure with no additional components (coolers, orifices) that can change the exhaust gas properties. A new monitoring PM analyzing system, which can measure soot and SOF in low mass level, has been engaged. It consist of a diffusion charging (DC) detector with a dilution device for soot measurement, and two differential flame ionization detection (FID) method, which uses two FID detectors with separate sample lines. Exhaust emission reduction strategy for ships, Particulate Matters - PM in exhaust gas, non-thermal plasma reactor, experimental test bed and procedure, an example of reactor power measurement, test results provided into seven stages are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Large seagoing vessels are one of the largest pollution sources in the sea environment world. Marine engines operate with extremely low quality fuels contaminated by sulphur and aromatic compounds. Vessels are responsible for an estimated 14 percent total nitrogen oxide emission and 16 percent sulphur oxide, respectively. Nitrogen oxides emissions cause serious problems including acid rain in local areas such as harbours' vicinity. All diesel engine manufacturers have been working on reducing on NOx from ships. This paper describes one of the experimental methods - using non-thermal plasma reactor. NTP reactor was built as the after-treatment module in exhaust gas system in marine diesel engine. Emission measurements were carried out on the engine with and without demonstrator NTP module. The main aim was to analyze exhaust gas compounds during real engine operation, in accordance with test cycles procedureD-2 and E-2 (ISO-8178 rules). The experiment test bench gives the innovative role in the development exhaust gas after-treatment technology for marine systems. One of the most promising methods to decrease the number of toxic compounds from exhaust gas is implementing of NTP reactor as after main treatment module. As the next steps a two-stage plasma-chemical process for the control of harmful compounds: non-thermal plasma reactor and catalyst is proposed. This combination should be more effective and probably gives reduction with more efficiency of harmful exhaust gas compounds.

The control of nox emissions from marine engines proves a challenge. Diesel engine manufacturers have been investigating a variety of methods with aim of reducing nox emissions. Currently, the plasma technology is undergoing rapid development in application to diesel engine exhausts. A combination of non-thermal plasma with catalysts can be referred to plasma assisted catalysts technology. This paper briefly describes research efforts aimed at non-thermal plasma reactor development for ship use with primary focus on NO oxidation condition. The part scale plasma reactor models have been designed and manufactured for the purpose of this trial. Exhaust emission plasma after-treatment module was fitted on exhaust outlet path of the marine test bed engine for fractional exhaust gas stream examination. Subsequently, the comprehensive series of trials were performed to assess the exhaust flow properties of the main exhaust channel and plasma reactor by-pass duct. Emission measurements were carried out on engine at steady-state operation. The NO reaction activity was a major task of the experiment and throughout the measurements, the engine outlet nox levels (NO and NO2) were monitored with simultaneous NO, NO2, N2O level recording after NTP reactor.

The manufacturing of Catfish products has been developed rapidly in the Mekong delta. Every year, about 1.2 million tons of Catfish and 150,000 tons of biofuel are produced. The biofuel B100 manufactures in Mekong delta satisfies the America standard ASTM D6751; EURO EN 14214 or Vietnamese standard TCVN 7717. Mekong delta, a lower land area, has a large inland water way system with around 100.000 river boats that operate with marine diesel engine. Using the biofuel for the marine diesel engine in area will reduce the HC, CO, SOx and NOx emission to the environment. Therefore, with a study on applying the catfish biofuel, it will reduce the climate change by the increasing of sea water level and save energy by using green energy to replace petrol oil.

Opis:
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has revised air pollution regulations in MARPOL Annex VI. In 2012 Emission Control Areas (ECA) will limit fuel sulphur content to 1% and from 2015 to 0.1%). NOx emissions based on ships engine speed are also reduced for new vessels (2012 & 2016). Facing this legislation, ship owners have the alternative either to operate ships with costly low-sulphur fuels, or to keep using HFO but together with a gas cleaning equipment at the ship stack in order to reduce the rejected amount of SO2 gas in the atmosphere. To achieve this requirement, research and development organizations came out with proposing a solution that uses a device for cleaning exhaust gas of marine diesel engines. The paper presents a short communication about the DEECON project, which aim is to create a novel on-board after-treatment unit more advanced than any currently available. Each sub-unit of the system will be optimized to remove a specific primary pollutant. In particular, the technology within the DEECON system is based on novel or improved abatement techniques for reducing SOx, NOx, Particulate Matter (PM), CO and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). Some of these technologies are completely new for the maritime sector and they will represent a breakthrough in the reduction of the atmospheric emissions of ships, moving forward the performance of exhaust gas cleaning systems and fostering and anticipating the adoption of future and tighter regulatory requirements. In addition, an after-treatment strategy enables the possible adoption of alternative fuels, which often have their own emissions characteristics.
Urządzenie to będzie optymalizowane w celu usunięcia najważniejszych zanieczyszczeń tj. SOx, NOx, PM, Lotnych Związków Organicznych (VOC) oraz tlenku węgla (CO). Niektóre z tych technologii są całkowicie nowe w przemyśle morskim i stanowią przełom w redukcji emisji zanieczyszczeń do atmosfery. Ponadto, takie rozwiązanie jest uniwersalne, umożliwia zastosowanie alternatywnych paliw do zasilania silników okrętowych, które często mają własne cechy emisji.

Opis:
Greater interdependence and integration among the countries worldwide have resulted in the growth of the world trade and, what follows, marine transportation. In the last few years, despite the world economic stagnation, the number of ships has increased. An increase in the marine transportation means greater air pollution caused by ships, what is of paramount importance for the port cities. One of the efficient ways of limiting the negative impact of ships lying in ports on the environment is the power supply from the local electricity stations. This will allow for turning marine power generating systems off, what will result in the emission elimination in the ship’s mooring time along with the decrease of noise and vibrations. The infrastructure of the port electric installation necessary for the ships’ supply has to be designed so as to make the operating of different ship types possible. It is complicated as all over the world ships are equipped with different electric systems. The paper deals with general issues related to common nominal voltages and frequencies for vessels which call in European harbours and their estimated power demands. Additionally, a case study of a ferry vessel, currently undergoing retrofitting for shore connections, is presented and some particulars concerning technical solutions and environmental profits are described.

One of the important design parameters for internal combustion engines is the geometric compression ratio epsilon. It is defined by the ratio of the maximum volume of the combustion chamber Vmax at the bottom dead centre (BDC) piston position and a minimum volume of the combustion chamber Vmin at the top dead centre (TDC) piston position. Conventional engines have this parameter set unchangeable, what is not the solution ensuring optimal benefits coming from the heat release in the combustion process, especially under altering conditions of load and speed in which they perform powering the road vehicles. It is reflected mainly in exhaust emission problem. Despite a considerable progress, further improving the ecological and energetic performances of the piston engines faces severe system limits, elimination of which requires major changes in engine design, including conversion the fixed compression ratio into the flexible one. For such innovative engine designs with so-called variable compression ratio VCR feature the geometric compression ratio parameter is as the one of the operation regulators. Due to the new development prospect the paper scope is an analysis and showing some results for the impact of compression ratio on the emissions of selected exhaust harmful components for a direct injection diesel engine. The schematics and prototype solutions for VCR technology are briefly presented too.

Opis:
The ship "Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)" has been formulated by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) as a measure of the CO2 emission performance of ships. The ship EEDI is calculated based on characteristics of the ship at build, incorporating parameters including ship capacity, engine power and fuel consumption. Shipping is responsible for CO2 discharge of approximately 3.3% global emission and despite being an energy-efficient transport means, compared with other transport modes, there are opportunities for increasing energy efficiency. The EEDI requires a minimum energy efficiency level (CO2 emissions) per capacity mile (e.g. tonne mile) for different ship type and size sectors. With the level being tightened over time, the EEDI will stimulate continued technical development of all the components influencing the energy efficiency of a ship. The paper presents an overview of EEDI calculation method for container vessels and results of experimental approach. The experimental process results through comprehensive analysis of operational data, from modern container vessel, equipped with direct main propulsion unit have been introduced. Ship operators have already been implementing energy efficiency operational measures and set goals for reducing the energy consumption of their fleet. Performance and savings are not always monitored and reported. However, it can be foreseen that such activity when is successfully promoted, reduction of CO2 emissions can be achieved.

The paper compares the basic parameters of the process of combustion in the Fiat MultUet 1.3 SDE 90 KM with and without an exhaust gas recirculation system, running according to load characteristics with the following engine crankshaft rotational speeds: n=l200 ipm, 1750 rpm and 3000 rpm. During testing, the engine was supplied with commercial diesel oil. The tested engine was provided with external exhaust gas recirculation consisting in supplying a specific amount of exhaust gas back to the cylinder via an EGR electric solenoid valve. The exhaust gas delivered to the cylinder was cooled. Exhaust gas is composed of inert gases that do not take part in the combustion process. This causes, above all, a lower rate of pressure increase in the cylinder and a lower heat release rate. Thanks to exhaust gas recirculation, lower maximal temperatures prevail in the cylinder, and the engine's operation is "softer." During experimental testing, the variation of cylinder pressure and chamber pressure, the injector operation control current magnitude, effective power, torque and the hourly fuel consumption, as well as the exhaust gas recirculation rate. Actual indicator diagrams plotted were used for determining the heat release characteristics, based on which the percentage fractions of the burned out fuel charge injected during one engine running cycle namely 5, 10, 50 and 90% fractions were determined. In addition, the indicator indices were determined. The paper has demonstrated the effect of exhaust gas recirculation on the processes occurring inside the cylinder in the self ignition internal combustion engine.

The internal combustion engine plays a vital role in transportation, industry, and shipping. However, diesel as one of the main fuels for internal combustion engines, caused many environmental and human health problems. In order to solve the problems, more researchers have been committed to the research of alternative fuels. Biodiesel is a renewable, sustainable alternative fuel, and its characteristics are similar to traditional diesel. It can be mixed with pure diesel. It has been found that a mix with pure diesel in a certain ratio can effectively reduce the negative effects caused by its characteristics, improve the combustion performance, and reduce the NOx and PM emissions. This article mainly reviews the effects of the mixture of biodiesel and diesel on engine combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions, including three parts: part (1) summarizes and analyzes the biodiesel’s production and characteristics, part (2) analyzes the engine’s performance under different working conditions, and part (3) studies and analyzes the exhaust emission under different working conditions.

Opis:
The test results and their analysis was discussed in this article. The tests were carried out in accordance with the WLTP (Worldwide Light Duty Test Procedure), on a passenger car with a compression ignition engine. The analysis was conducted doe the following variables: vehicle speed, exhaust emission rate and fuel consumption volumetric rate. The subject of the research are exhaust emission components that are harmful to the health of living organisms: carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, as well as greenhouse gases. The research results have shown a very large range of values for carbon monoxide, organic compounds and nitrogen oxides emission rate characteristics. The average distance-specific emissions values of carbon monoxide, organic compounds and nitrogen oxides were very small and were in line with the Euro 6 requirements within a large margin. Correlation studies of the measured variables were conducted - between vehicle speed and exhaust emission rate as well as volumetric fuel consumption rates, and between exhaust emission rates and volumetric fuel consumption rates. The correlation studies have shown that the highest coefficient of determination in relation to vehicle speed was found for volumetric fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission rate, and the weakest correlation for carbon monoxide emission rate and nitrogen oxides emission rate. The correlation between the rate of volumetric fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission, as well as for hydrocarbon emission and methane emission rates, was found to be the strongest. The carbon monoxide emission rate was the least correlated with all the other measured variables. Dimensionless statistical characteristics of the measured variables were determined, such as: extreme values, range, mean value, median, standard deviation, kurtosis, skewness and coefficient of variation. For all of them, the mean value was much greater than the median, and the standard deviation was greater still, than both of those values. The numerical distributions for the values of exhaust emission rate and volumetric fuel consumption turned out to be leptokurtic and have right-sided asymmetry. The coefficient of variation analysis made it possible to assess that the most dynamic properties could be observed in organic compounds emission rate, followed by carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides emission rates, and finally - the vehicle speed. Histograms of the examined processes were determined. The vehicle speed histogram was characterized by relative uniformity apart from the dominance of the idle speed. Histograms of exhaust emission rate variables were most frequently dominated by small values. The zero values occurred less frequently for the fuel consumption volumetric rate histogram. Based on the conducted research and the obtained data, a set of conclusions was drawn.

The article concerns the use of an in-cylinder catalyst that allows reducing the exhaust emissions during diesel engine operation. This is an additional method of exhaust emission reduction - however, the active component is placed inside the combustion chamber - hence much closest to the combustion process. This allows reducing the emissions at the very source (catalyst applied on the glow plugs). Such solutions are necessary because the reduction of exhaust emissions from vehicles is a key aspect of reducing the negative impact of transport on the environment.

This paper devoted to pollution of the atmosphere due marine diesel engines in operation. In the paper presented are results of the investigations carried out in the Gdynia Maritime Academy laboratory with the use of a ship diesel engine, one-cylinder, two-stroke, crosshead of longitudinal scavenging, which was loaded by means of the water brake. This diesel engine combusting heavy fuel oil IF 40. The test-involved effect of two selected control parameters of fuel injection system ship diesel engine: fuel injection pressure and injection advance angle. Both selected control parameters were changed during the experiment separately, each of them three times. And so: changing the fuel injection pressure - for three selected values: 18, 22 and 26 MPa; changing the fuel injection advance angle - for three selected values: -10 centigrade, -13 centigrade and -16 centigrade before the piston's top dead centre (BTDC). The measurements were performed within the wide range of engine load at the permanent rotational speed of 220 rpm. For each of the above selected values six measurements were performed at the following engine loads: 25%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70% and 80% nominal loads. Control parameters to change the injection pump and injector engine, during operation of the engine, by means of a supplementary-scaled instrumentation of the injector and injection pump. Owing to this is was not necessary to stop the engine before each successive test cycle. This way of realization of the measurements guaranteed running them in steady conditions. The elimination of influence of possible disturbances witch could arise from multiple starting and stopping the engine improved accuracy and reliability of the obtained results.

Presented paper shows results of laboratory tests on the relationship between the throttling of a cross area of an air intake duct and the composition of exhaust gas from the marine engine. The object of research is a laboratory four-stroke diesel engine, worked with a load from 50kW to 250kW at a constant speed. During the laboratory, tests over 50 parameters were measured of the engine with technical condition recognized as a “working properly” and with a simulated the air intake duct throttling. The simulation consisted of inserting the throttling flanges to the air intake duct before compressor, limiting duct cross-sectional area by 20% and 60% respectively. The results of laboratory research confirm that the effect of the air intake duct throttling on the engine thermodynamic parameters is clearly visible only at considerable throttling. In the case of measuring the composition of exhaust gas, both mole fractions and emissions of gaseous components markedly affected even at low throttling. For example, 20% throttling of the cross section of the air intake duct increase the mole fraction of carbon monoxide in exhaust gas almost 44% during working the engine with load equal to 250kW, and only 10% of the temperature after air cooler. Keep in mind that the temperature after air cooler was an engine parameter, which undergoes the greatest change during the simulation of that malfunction. The conclusion is that the results of measurements of the composition of exhaust gas may contain valuable diagnostic information about the technical condition of the air delivery to the engine system.

The object of research is a marine 3-cylinder, four-stroke, direct injection diesel engine with an intercooler system. The engine was loaded with a generator and supercharged. The generator was electrically connected to the water resistance. The engine operated with a load between 50 kW and 250 kW at a constant speed. The engine load and speed, parameters of the turbocharger, systems of cooling, fuelling, lubricating and air exchange, were measured. Fuel injection and combustion pressures in all cylinders of the engine were also recorded. Exhaust gas composition was recorded by using a electrochemical gas analyzer. Air pressure, temperature and humidity were also recorded. Emission characteristics of the engine were calculated according to ISO 8178 standard regulations. During the study the engine operated at the technical condition recognized as „working properly” and with simulated fuel injector malfunctions. Simulation of malfunctions consisted in the increasing and decreasing of fuel injector static opening pressure, decalibration of fuel injector holes and clogging 2 neighboring of 9 fuel injector holes on one of 3 engine cylinders.

Changing some parameters of the engine structure alters the emission of harmful components in the exhaust gas. This applies in particular to the damage of charge exchange system as well as fuel system and engine supercharger. These changes are much greater during the dynamic states and their accompanying transitional processes. The different sensitivity of diagnostic parameters to the same force, coming from the engine structure, but realized in other loading conditions can be discussed. Presented in the paper is a model of the engine diagnostic, in which symptoms are indicators of diagnostic and emission characteristics of gaseous exhaust components. For the purpose of the paper the parameters were taken as the dominant structure in the change of fuel injection timing. The diagnostic engine model, based on the theory of multi-equation models, was supplemented by the results of the tests on the single-cylinder research engine ZS. Also proposed is a measure of the sensitivity of the diagnostic parameter during dynamic processes. The following paper is building on the problem previously published by the authors in [X].

Opis:
In this paper, attention was paid to the problem of low controllability of marine medium- and high-speed engines during operation, which significantly limits the parametric diagnosis. The measurement of quickly changing temperature of engine exhaust gas was proposed, the courses of which can be a source of diagnostic information. The F statistic of the Fisher-Snedecor distribution was chosen as a statistical tool. Laboratory tests were carried out on the bench of a Farymann Diesel engine. The tests consisted of introducing the real changes in the constructional structure of the considered functional systems of the engine. Three changed parameters for the structure were reviewed: the active cross-sectional area of the inlet air channel, injector opening pressure and compression ratio. Based on the recorded plots of the quick-changing temperatures of the exhaust gases, three diagnostic measures were defined and subjected to statistical tests. The following data were averaged over one cycle for a 4-stroke piston engine operation, (1) the peakto-peak value of the exhaust gas temperature, (2) the specific enthalpy of the exhaust gas, and (3) the rate of increase and decrease in the values for the quick-changing exhaust gas temperature. In this paper will present results of the first stage of the elimination study: the one-factor statistical analysis (randomised complete plan). The next part will present the results of the second stage of studies: two-factor analysis (block randomised plan), where the significance of the effect of changing the values of the structure parameters on the diagnostic measures was analysed in the background of a variable engine load.

Opis:
The article presents a continuation of research carried out to determine the effect of input parameters (changes in engine structure parameters) on selected output parameters (diagnostic measures), based on quickly changing exhaust gas temperature. A method of determining the simultaneous influence of two input factors (the structure parameter and the engine load) on one output factor was presented, as well as an evaluation of which of the analysed input factors has a stronger influence on the output parameter. The article presents the stages of the experimental research conducted and statistical inference based on the results. Three changing parameters for the structure were reviewed: the active cross-sectional area of the inlet air channel, the injector opening pressure and the compression ratio. Based on the quickly changing temperatures of the exhaust gases, three diagnostic measures were defined and subjected to statistical tests. The following data were averaged over one cycle for a 4-stroke engine operation: the intensity of changes, the specific enthalpy and the peak-to-peak value of the exhaust gas temperature. The results of the two-factor analysis are presented. Conclusions on the analysis are given and a criterion for the selection of a diagnostic measure, depending on the analysed parameter of the structural design of the diesel engine, is proposed. The previous part of the article presented the results of the first stage of the elimination study: the one-factor statistical analysis (randomised complete plan). This paper presents the results of the second stage of the studies: two-factor analysis (block randomised plan), where the significance of the effect of changing the values of the structural parameters on the diagnostic measures were analysed in the background of a variable engine load. The water cooled exhaust systems are not often used onboard ships. Prime goal is to lower temperature of exhaust gas from main propulsion and auxiliary engines to the defined limit. The design of such systems require detailed analysis of propulsion system operational parameters to meet designer expectations. The paper outlines the cooled exhaust system design problems in specific application. The simplified method of evaluation of expected cooling water flow requirements has been developed. Based on marine diesel engines test bench data, the results of short analysis of cooling water demand for two different diesel engines are presented. A simplified engineering approach may be useful for assessment of exhaust gas cooling system performance in commercial application like rescue vessels wet exhaust design or exhaust gas cleaning systems.

Opis:
The number of vehicles in the world is growing rapidly. Therefore, the global consumption of crude oil is increasing and its natural resources are being depleted. It causes the rise of oil fuel cost. Constantly rising energy prices and emironmental concerns have made energy saving the highest priority for transportation operators. The main goal of vehicles' operation is economy. The fuel consumption of the most popular internal combustion engines depends on various factors, and one of the most important of them is thermal condition. Energy or fuel saving is the main way to reduce operational expenses of vehicles. This paper aims to investigate fuel consumption of 1.9 liter volume direct injection diesel engine and to construct a diagram of the dependence of the amount of smoke in exhaust on the temperature of engine's operation. The temperature was fixed in the engine's crankcase, while the temperature of cooling liquid was measured at four points as well as during the engine's bench testing. Unexpected test results are obtained: when the temperature of exhaust gases rises above 70-75 °C, the amount of smoke increases by a few times. Finally, basic conclusions and recommendations are given.

The paper presents the problem of the impact of external distortions originating on laboratory test stands on the results of measurements of fast-varying diesel exhaust gas temperature. It has been stressed how significant the aspect of the test stand adaptation is during an experiment to ensure the smallest possible impact. This paper, however, focuses on the methods of mathematical processing of a signal recorded during experimental research of a real object. The most significant parameter requiring filtering is the fast-varying exhaust gas temperature in the engine exhaust channel. Methods of mathematical processing adequate to this type of distorted signal have been presented, particularly those that can be used in the Matlab environment and consisting in averaging of the obtained curves of temperature changes. The results of the application of these methods have also been presented on actual curves recorded during laboratory tests and their evaluation has been made.

Opis:
The article presents results of a laboratory study on exhaust gas emission level from a marine diesel engine. The object of the laboratory study was a four-stroke marine diesel engine type Al 25/30 Sulzer, operated at a constant speed. The examination on the engine was carried out according to regulations of the Annex VI to MARPOL 73/78 Convention. The laboratory study consisted of 3 observations: the engine assumed to be operating without malfunctions, delay of the fuel injection by 5° of crankshaft angle in the second engine cylinder, and the leakage of the fuel pump on the second engine cylinder. Additionally, parameters of fuel consumption and thermodynamic parameters of the marine engine were measured during the research. Simulated malfunctions caused changes in total weighed NOx, CO, and CO2 emissions for all considered engine loads. All simulated malfunctions caused a small change in measured thermodynamic parameters of the engine. The engine operation with the delayed fuel injection and the fuel leakage in the fuel pump in one cylinder caused a decrease of NOx and CO emission level. Fuel leakage in the fuel pump causes the CO2 emission to decrease only at low engine load. Calculations of the weighed specific fuel consumption present a 1-2% change in the engine efficiency.

In order to avoid the negative effects of increasing the amount of RME in the fuel, the nitrON® package was used, containing 3 different additives: stabilizing, washing and increasing the cetane number of the fuel. The tests were carried out with the use of the Caterpillar C27 engine of the 6Dg locomotive connected to a water resistor. The hourly engine fuel consumption (FC), NOx concentration and exhaust opacity were measured for 3 points of the F test, in accordance with UIC 624. The concentration of the nitrON® additive in the test fuel was 1500 ppm (v/v). For idling, the reduction in FC value was only 1.5% (in relation to the base fuel), but for a very high engine load and nominal rotational speed, the percentage reduction in FC was as high as 5%. The reduction of NOx concentration for idling (as a result of using nitrON®) was approx. 10%, while for high engine load, the percentage reduction of NOx concentration in the exhaust gas exceeded 15%.

To avoid the negative effects of increasing the amount of RME in the diesel fuel (to 10%), three different additive packages were used: stabilising, cleaning, and increasing the cetane number with different concentrations. The tests were carried out using a 4-cylinder, turbocharged 1.9 TDI engine from VW. The tests were carried out for 4 fuels (comparative fuel with a content of 7% RME and 3 test fuels with a content of 10% RME, differing in the content of the additive package. It was found that each of the 3 additive packages used does not have a significant impact on fuel consumption. However, a different effect of the tested additives on the composition of exhaust gases was observed. The first package had a slight effect on reducing the NOx concentration in the exhaust, but only for small engine loads. On the other hand, the second additive pack worked more effectively only at higher engine loads (in relation to the reduction of NOx concentration in the exhaust gases). In the third packet, the amount of the cetane additive was doubled (compared to the second packet). Then, the reduction in the NOx concentration in the exhaust gas by 3-8% was obtained with reference to the comparative fuel.

The description of construction and results of preliminary investigations of axially symmetrical arrangement was presented in "Researches of model plasma reactor for purify Diesel exhaust gas of particulates" published in Journal of KONES 2006. In the publication the attention was drawn to the fundamental problems requiring the solution, and namely: - The quick coating of electrodes insulators with soot, which took effect of leakance of corona discharge current and fading away of discharge, - Somewhat low, over a dozen-percentage effectiveness of cleaning process in comparison with previously studied flat arrangement, which effectiveness came up to 40 %. Subsequent investigations were concentrated on capturing of above-mentioned difficulties. Some modified variants of device were prepared. The number of electrodes was limited from three to only one, which was enclosed with insulator serving as the cardinal bracket of blades assembly generating corona discharge and the deflecting electrode. This new arrangement permitted examination of several variants of device described in present publication, which in consequence constrained searching of methods of soot settlement limitation to two final solutions: blowing-in of air stream in place of soot settlement (described in present publication) as well as burning the soot sediment on artificially warmed surface of insulator (in preparation). In order to improve the cleaning effectiveness of the system, the empirical tests of different variants of discharge area formation are carrying out with simultaneously measurement of discharge current, being the measure of its intensity. The subjects of comparison were among other things the mesh of thin wires and the aggregate of linear blades. Applying of filter modules in form of concentric meshes of different diameter of net mesh caused the improvement of cleaning effectiveness to over 40 %.
Opis konstrukcji i wyniki wstępnych badań układu osiowo-symetrycznego opisano w publikacji zamieszczonej w "Journal of KONES 2006"[1]. Wykonano zmodyfikowane warianty urządzenia, w którym ograniczono liczbę elektrod z trzech do jednej, otoczonej izolatorem, wykonanym jako główny wspornik zespołu ostrzy generujących wyładowania koronowe i elektrody odchylającej. Badaniom poddano m.in. warianty z siatką cienkich drutów w porównaniu z zespołem ostrzy liniowych. Po zastosowaniu modułu filtrów w postaci koncentrycznych siatek o różnej średnicy oczek uzyskano poprawę skuteczności oczyszczania do ponad 40 %.

Opis:
The change of some parameters of an engine structure affects emission of harmful components in engine’s exhaust. This applies first of all to damages in a charge exchange system as well as in a fuel system and an engine supercharging system. These changes are significantly greater during dynamic states and in the time transient processes. It is possible to talk about different sensitivities of emission factors understood here as diagnostic parameters for the same extortion from the structure of the engine but executed in other load states. The article presents a diagnostic model of the engine in which the diagnostic symptoms are indicators and characteristics of the emission of gaseous exhaust components. The model was supplemented with the results of tests on the real object, which was a marine diesel engine. Propose measures of the sensitivity of the diagnostic parameter during dynamic processes - processes characterized by high variability of waveforms, which variability causes problems not only of measurement nature, but also often interpretive.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the diesel engine research on the indicator and heat realized diagrams for VW 1.9 TDI working in 2 modes: with standard, non-cooled EGR system, and without this system. All of measurement was carried out on the some engine speed – 2000 rpm (speed of maximum engine torque) and various engine load. Some of the analyzed parameters were read directly from the measurement systems (e.g. indicator diagrams) or engine controller (e.g. start of injection) and the rest of them had to be calculated. The calculation of rate of heat release (δQ/dα) was based on the well-known mathematical model. When the exhaust gas recirculation valve is open, the maximum of combustion pressure and rate of maximum kinetic heat release (δQk/dα)max are smaller than when the valve is closed. These facts are connected with the shorter self-combustion delay for engine working with EGR. But this is also associated with reduction of the rate of maximum diffusion heat release (δQd/dα)max, which means that more particulates (PM) are excreted into the atmosphere. This fact explains e.g. significantly higher smog of exhaust gases for diesel engine which works with EGR system. The analysis results show that exhaust gas recirculation system slightly deteriorates the energetic parameters of VW 1.9 TDI engine, but, at the same time, significantly reduces the level of toxic nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases.

Opis:
The change of some of the engine’s structural parameters affects the change of toxic compound emission in exhaust gases. It mainly applies to the damage sustained by the charge exchange system as well as the fuel system and the engine supercharging system. These changes are definitely higher during dynamic states and the related transient states. As such, it is possible to speak of a diverse sensitivity of the diagnostic parameters on the exact same excitations which come from the structure of the engine but are realized in other states of load. In the paper presented is the diagnostic model of an engine, based on the theory of multi-equation models, in which the diagnostic symptoms are the indices and characteristics of exhaust gas compound emissions. For the sake of this paper, the modal value of the structure parameters was assumed to be the change in the angle of advance of the fuel injection. The diagnostic model of the engine was supplemented with the results of research conducted on a station equipped with a single cylinder CI test engine. In previous works of the author, the information capacity index method (the Hellwig method) was suggested for the measurement of the sensitivity of a diagnostic parameter. Based on this method, a ranking of diagnostic parameters can be created, which divides the collection of diagnostic transients into stimulators, destimulators and nominants. This normalization of the collection seems to be helpful during making a diagnostic decision.

To identify amid PM particulates the particles other than soot, the filters used in diesel engine testing have been analysed. Analysed filters had been applied in the study on a 6-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine, technically proficient, working at constant torque and speed. The particles captured on the filter were put under observational study using the possibilities of electron microscope and spectroscopic analysis. The testing was done on a scanning electron microscope JSM-5800 of the firm Jeol (Japan), coupled with an X-ray spectrometer Link ISIS of the firm Oxford Instruments Ltd. (United Kingdom). It was found, that on the filter surface, besides the soot particles of uniform colour and structure, there were also other particles of different colour and form. These particles were localized and examined in terms of the chemical elements in their composition. Their dimensions also were determined. Metal particles were identified: ferrous alloy, zinc alloy and the silicon alloy. Amid the particulate matter, some heterogeneous particles were identified. They had the form of agglomerates of different structure, compound of elementary particles of different origins and materials.

Opis:
The paper presents experimental research on a 4-stroke, 3-cylinder, turbocharged AL25/30 Diesel engine. Research consisted in investigating the effect of the geometry of the fuel injectors on the exhaust gas composition from the engine. During measurements, the engine was operated with a regulator characteristic of a load range from 40 kW to 280 kW, made by electric water resistance. The engine was mechanically coupled to the electric power generator. Three observations were made for each engine load, operating with fuel injectors of varying geometry. All considered types of injectors were installed on all engine cylinders. Mentioned injectors differed in the size of the nozzle holes diameters, holes numbers and angles measured between the holes axis. Engine performance data were recorded with a sampling time of 1 s. Cylinder pressure and fuel injection pressure on the front of each injector were collected also. The composition of the exhaust gas was measured using an electrochemical analyzer. According to the results, the change of fuel nozzle geometry results in a change in fuel spraying and evaporation and consequently changes in the course of the combustion process. The effect of this is the change of the composition of the exhaust gas.

The article presents experimental test results of a DI single-cylinder, air-cooled diesel engine FL 511 operating with the normal (class 2) diesel fuel (DF), rapeseed oil (RO) and its 10%, 20% and 30% (v/v) blends with aviation-turbine fuel JP-8 (NATO code F-34). The purpose of the research was to analyse the effects of using various rapeseed oil and jet fuel RO90, RO80 and RO70 blends on brake specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency, emissions and smoke of the exhaust. The test results of engine operation with various rapeseed oil and jet fuel blends compared with the respective parameters obtained when operating with neat rapeseed oil and those a straight diesel develops at full (100%) engine load and maximum brake torque speed of 2000 rpm. The research results showed that jet fuel added to rapeseed oil allows to decrease the value of kinematic viscosity making such blends suitable for the diesel engines. Using of rapeseed oil and jet fuel blends proved themselves as an effective measure to maintain fuel-efficient performance of a Didiesel engine. The brake specific fuel consumption decreased by about 6.1% (313.4 g/kW·h) and brake thermal efficiency increase by nearly 1.0% (0.296) compared with the respective values a fully (100%) loaded engine fuelled with pure RO at the same test conditions. The maximum NOx emission was up to 13.7% higher, but the CO emissions and smoke opacity of the exhaust 50.0% and 3.4% lower, respectively, for the engine powered with biofuel blend RO70 compared with those values produced by the combustion of neat rapeseed oil at full (100%) engine load and speed of 2000 rpm.

The paper discusses influence of the charging air parameters marine diesel engine on the emission toxic compounds in aspect of protecting the atmosphere against pollution from the sea vessels, pointed to the possibility of reducing NOx emissions by changing the parameters of charging air. In this group of activities undertaken to reduce nitric oxides emissions applied inter alia cooling the air and changes in pressure at the beginning of compression stroke. This is discussed in the background of normative acts, in particular the 73/78 MARPOL Convention (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships) referring to prevention against marine environment pollution, and later amendments to the Convention with Annex VI (Regulation for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships) dealing with reducing the emission of nitric oxides and sulphur oxides into the atmosphere by sea vessels engines. It was also discussed the issue of air humidification as a method to reduce NOx by injecting hot water into a stream of pumped air. This is an overview on the example of two methods proposed for using in marine engines: CASS (Combustion Air Saturation System), HAM (Humid Air Motor system). The results of experimental tests of the influence of charging air pressure on content of exhaust gas, especially content nitric oxides (NOx), of ship diesel engine supplied with marine heavy fuel oil IF40 have been presented in this paper.

The article presents selected issues of mathematical modeling of heat exchange between the thermocouple and the exhaust gas flowing them, in unsteady conditions. On the way of energy balancing consideration of thermodynamic processes developed differential equations describing the dynamic properties for three versions of the design sheathed thermocouples: with weld isolated from the sheath, with weld welded the sheath and with the open weld. On this basis were determined the equations describing the time constants. After substituting the appropriate the input data : materials and heat-flow, provided by the manufacturer (the company "Termo-Precyzja") it was possible to compare the numerical values of the time constants of thermocouples and make a rational choice for the diagnostic tests conducted marine diesel engines.
W artykule przedstawiono wybrane zagadnienia modelowania matematycznego wymiany ciepła pomiędzy termoparą i omywających ją spalinami w warunkach nieustalonych.

Opis:
In the paper is discussed an effect of initial dose division on emission of toxic components in exhaust gases of dual fuel self-ignition engine run on CNG as the main fuel and on Diesel oil used to ignition of the gas. To disadvantageous features of the dual fuel engine belongs excessive worsening of engine performance at partial loads due to leaning of gaseous mixture. It results from worsening of combustion process of lean mixtures, effecting in excessive emission of toxic components of exhaust gases. In the present paper one strived after reduction of this problem by division of the initial dose. The second dose of the Diesel oil, according to assumptions, should activate fading combustion of the gas. The investigations have confirmed advantageous effect of division of the dose on emission of the NOx, at slight increase of CO and THC. Simultaneously, overall efficiency of the engine has increased.

Opis:
A mathematical model of joint operation of a piston engine with pulse turbine drive, compressor as well as air supply of a diesel locomotive is presented in the article. This model in an integral part of the complex engine-generator power unit of a diesel locomotive in steady states and transient conditions, developed by the authors. The periodic process in the exhaust manifold is represented as two specific characteristic ranges which encompass the process of forced exhaust and the scavenging process. The scavenging calculation is carried out jointly with the processes taking place in the inlet manifold of the engine, including inlet devices of the locomotive. The process of forced exhaust is calculated separately from the inlet processes and doesn`t require usage of empirical coefficients of impulsiveness. Both processes are represented as systems of nonlinear algebraic equations describe in the quasi-steady flow of working fluid in the elements of the inlet and exhaust tracts. The gas-dynamic calculation of the turbine in the transition process is conducted while taking into account changes in flow angles on the rotor blades. As a result of numerical calculation of the a8S22W diesel operational indices in transient modes, a satisfactory compliance of the calculated and the experimental results was obtained.

Opis:
The paper discusses the impact of changes in the compression ratio on the operating parameters of a diesel engine, e.g. on the temperature of exhaust gases. It presents the construction of the laboratory test stand, on which experimental measurements were realized. It is characterized how the actual changes of the compression ratio were introduced to the existing engine. The program of experimental investigations taking into account the available test stand and measurement possibilities was described. A statistical and qualitative analysis of the obtained measurement results was made. The use of F statistics of the Fisher-Snedecor distribution was proposed to assess the significance of the effect of compression ratio changes on the specific enthalpy of the exhaust gas stream. The specific enthalpy of exhaust gases was analysed for one cycle of diesel engine work, determined on the basis of the course of quickly varying temperature of exhaust gases. The results of these analyses are discussed and the utilitarian purpose of this type of evaluation in parametric diagnostics of piston engines is presented.

The paper presents results of MES calculations of temperature, stress and displacement distributions. The considered engine was the actual naturally aspirated one of 4C90. Calculations were performed by means of Abaqus Standard computer program. The engine elements considered were exhaust and inlet valves. This numerical tool used in the calculations enabled the execution of the finite element method calculations in non-linear range on the basis of iterative calculations of the geometrically non-linear issues using Newton - Raphson methods. The elements utilized in model were of C3D8T type, 8th. nodal, hexagonal to paired temperature-distortional analysis with the shape function of the first type. The elements of this type were used to model geometrically straight elements, such as: the valve seats, weld overlay, the valve guides, the valve disks, the valve stems. The remaining parts of engine were modelled with the utilization of C3D4T elements 4th nodal, tetragonal to paired temperature-distortional analysis with the shape function of the first type. The paired temperature-distortional analysis was carried out. The total number of elements was 371095, in this 20698 elements in inlet valve, 15117 elements in exhaust valve, 3264 elements in weld overlay, 2108 of elements in inlet valve seat, 1664 elements in exhaust valve seat, 126233 elements in the head. Obtained results are in fair agreement with similar studies for the other CI engines. Results of experimental studies into wear mechanisms at the valve seat surfaces are presented. Corrosion, adhesion and indentation wear were documented by means of SEM and EDX measurements. Results of numerical calculation proved that significant sliding takes place on the mating surfaces, which was caused by the mutual displacement of valve seat insert and valve stem.

Pozostałe części silnika zamodelowano z wykorzystaniem elementów C3D4T 4-węzłowych, tetragonalnych do analizy sprzężonej temperaturowo-odkształceniowej z funkcją kształtu 1-rzędu.

Opis:
This paper presents the application of Fisher-Snedecor distribution F statistics to assess the significance of the influence of changes in the active cross-sectional area of the inlet air channel (Adol) flow in a diesel engine on the observed diagnostic parameter determined on the basis of measurements of the quick changing exhaust gas temperature in the outlet channel, which is the specific enthalpy of the exhaust gas stream within one engine operating cycle (hspal). A plan of experimental tests carried out on the laboratory stand of a single-cylinder Farymann Diesel type D10 laboratory engine was presented and the method of determination of F statistics values for the obtained measurement results was characterized. Representative results of calculations were presented and the strength of Adol input parameter influence on the determined diagnostic parameter hspal simplified physical model of the working process of a compression ignition engine as the object of diagnosis was evaluated. It is planned to further develop the experimental research program to determine the significance of the influence of changes in the values of selected parameters of the engine structure on other diagnostic measures determined from the exhaust gas temperature signal, i.e. the mean peak-to-peak value as well as the rate (intensity) of increase and decrease in its value for individual engine cycles.

The paper presents the model of combustion process in the marine, turbocharged, 4-stroke and Diesel engine. The main target of modeling is the assessment of the exhaust gas composition. Presented multi-zone, 3-D model of combustion process consists of the following sub-models of processes: the fuel injection, the brake-up and the evaporation of fuel and the turbulence flow and the heat transfer phenomena. Presented model basis on the 3Z-ECFM mechanism of combustion and the initial and boundary conditions collected during direct measurements. The positive validation of the calculation results are obtained for mean and maximum value of the combustion pressure and values of oxygen and nitric oxides fractions in the exhaust gas. Unfortunately, fractions of carbon compounds in the exhaust gas are not properly calculated.
Praca prezentuje model procesu spalania 4-suwowego, turbodoładowanego, okrętowego silnika o zapłonie samoczynnym. Celem modelowania była ocena składu emitowanych spalin. Model ten to wielostrefowy, trójwymiarowy model spalania, obejmujący proces wtrysku, rozpylania i parowania paliwa wraz z towarzyszącymi im zjawiskami turbulentnego przepływu i wymiany ciepła.

Opis:
Changing some of the parameters of the engine structure affects the emission of harmful components in the exhaust gases. This primarily concerns damage in the cargo exchange system as well as in the fuel system and engine boost system. Changes in emissions of harmful compounds are often ambiguous, depending largely on the parameters that shape the combustion process. An additional problem is that often simple but undesired interactions occur with the interaction of these parameters. It is therefore possible to speak of different diagnostic parameters' sensitivity to the same extractions from the engine structure, but implemented in other load states. In cases where the set of parameters is numerous and the values of these parameters are similar, there is a real problem with their proper classification, often based on the discretion of the researcher. In the paper the authors propose a methodology for classification of acquired diagnostic parameters. In previous papers [4, 5], Hellwig's method of information capacity index was proposed as a measure of diagnostic parameter sensitivity. This method can be used to build a diagnostic parameter ranking that divides the set of diagnostic variables into stimulators, destimulators and nominators. This normalization of the set seems to be helpful in making a diagnostic decision not influenced by the discretion of the researcher. The zero unitary method can also be helpful in creating diagnostic tests.

The article presents issue of determining the time constant of thermocouple. The importance of dynamic properties of thermocouples during experiments was indicated. This paper presents the laboratory stand where experiments were made to determine the time constants of two types of thermocouples. Three methods of calculating this parameter were presented. The value of the time constant was determined by the numerical simulation of heat transfer between thermocouple’s weld and the surrounding exhaust gases, assuming the slow – changing of the process, namely transition from the steady state to the other. In the next step this parameter was calculated for the same transition but it was based on real and quick – changing temperature of exhaust gases, recorded during the experiment on laboratory stand. As the third method there was shown determining the value of time constant for the temporary conditions, for quick – changing temperature, recorded during the experiment, for the pseudo-periodic process within the duration of the cycle of engine. At the end, a comparison and evaluation of the calculation results was made, and the usefulness of the method of determining the time constant of thermocouples.

This paper describes the methodology and test results of diesel particulate filter (DPF) functional testing performed on non-road compression ignition engine application installed on test bed. The scope of work included testing of various DPF regeneration strategies, backpressure and balance point tests and emission performance evaluation during a legislative test cycle. The aim of this study was to observe and investigate the influence of raw exhaust gas parameters on DPF functionality in terms of filtration efficiency, soot loading, type and duration of the regeneration and emission performance. Under investigation was the capability of soot burning rate and fuel penalty. The DPF sample under test was part of the complete exhaust aftertreatment system (ATS) which consisted of: a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a DPF and a selective catalytic reduction system (SCR) with urea dosing and ammonia slip catalyst (ASC). Testing was carried out on a heavy-duty diesel engine installed on a test stand with a dynamic dynamometer and equipped with an emission bench. The test program allowed to assess the engine matching to exhaust aftertreatment system with regard to emissions compliance, in-service operation and necessary engine control unit (ECU) calibration works. The results show the influence of the DPF regeneration strategy on its duration and on the soot mass burn rate. Passive DPF regeneration was a favorable mode of DPF cleaning, due to lack of fuel penalty and lower aging impact on the entire ATS. Optimization of soot flow rate, exhaust gas temperature and the chemistry of the DOC/DPF was further recommended to ensure the long-term durability of the entire system.

Opis:
Doświadczenie ostatnich lat pozwala jednak wypowiedzieć stwierdzenie, iż wykonana praca przynosi wyraźne efekty i doprowadza do globalnego obniżenia emisji substancji szkodliwych. Jednostkowe zużycie paliwa z recyrkulacją i z chłodzeniem wykazuje nieco wyższy poziom niż bez chłodzenia w całym zakresie badanej zmiany momentu obrotowego. Zatem pomimo zastosowania urządzenia EGR o niezbyt skomplikowane budowie w znacznej mierze potwierdzone zostały założenia teoretyczne. Jednakże sterowanie procesem recyrkulacji nie jest łatwe i wymaga dostrojenia parametrów regulacyjnych (kąt wyprzedzenia wtrysku, dawka paliwa).
The systematic limitations of the emission of harmful substances and the implementation of succeeding editions of last time EURO rules, essentially, are nuisance to constructors and the producers of internal-combustion engines. Curiosity however is this, that first of all limitation of the emissions of harmful matter takes place „on paper". At the same time since originate the succeeding intensifications of rules relative of the harmful matter emissions. Later only the hard work of the constructors and producers is begun, in order to equal this what became endowed in the law. The experience of last years permits however to express ascertainment, that the exercised work brings distinct effects and leads to a global lowering of the emission of harmful matter. But therefore activity led in this direction are most justified and necessary. During performed research was found, that the quantity of the nitrogen oxides on the exhaust recirculation application becomes essentially smaller. In accordance with the assumptions recirculation influenced also on growth of the hydrocarbon content. The unitary fuel consumption with exhaust recirculation without the cooling shows the lowering together with growth of engine torque. The unitary fuel consumption with exhaust recirculation and with the cooling proves some higher level than without the refrigeration in the completely researched range of the engine torque change. Therefore despite the application of the EGR equipment of not very complicated design the theoretical assumptions became affirmed to a large degree. However control of recirculation process is not easy and requires the adaptations of regulating parameters (injection advance angle, fuel dose).

Opis:
The article presents the research results of compression-ignition engines, with a small displacement. Engines that were tested, were characterized by the same displacement, but have been produced in two versions: with a power of 51 i 67 kW, and for each version were used two methods for surface treatment of cylinders: conventional honing and made by laser oil microchambers. Each motor has been tested durability consisting of 504 hours of work. For the analyzes were selected three parameters: opacity, blow-by exhaust gases to the crankcase and lubricating oil consumption. Oil consumption was analyzed based on both the average hourly consumption resulting from the refilling of oil, and the hourly consumption measured at different loadings.

Opis:
To reduce exhaust NOx and smoke, it is important to measure flame temperature and soot amount in combustion chamber. In diesel combustion it is effective to use the two-color method for the measurement of the flame temperature and KL factor, which is related with soot concentration. The diesel flame was directly and continuously observed from the combustion chamber at running engine condition by using a bore scope and a high-speed video camera. The experimental single cylinder engine has 2.0-liter displacement and has the ability with up to five times of the boost pressure than the naturally aspirated engine by external super-charger. The devices of High Boost, Wide Range and High EGR rate at keeping a relatively high excess air ratio were installed in this research engine in order to reduce exhaust NOx emission without smoke deterioration from diesel engines. The video camera nac GX-1 was used in this study. From observed data under the changing EGR rates, the flame temperature and KL factor were obtained by the software of two-color method analysis. The diesel combustion processes are understood well by analyzing high-speed movies of the diesel flame motion and its temperature. The NOx and smoke are mutually related to maximum flame temperature and also it is possible to reduce simultaneously both NOx and soot emissions by high EGR rate in a single cylinder diesel engine.
