Opis:
Social research, including educational studies, could be conducted in accordance with ontological and epistemological assumptions of quantitative vs. qualitative research orientations. When such a distinction is present, the same phenomena are analyzed and presented in a significantly different and often mutually excluding way. Is such an approach justified? It seems it is not. Based on the precedence of a research subject over the method, it could be said that a more comprehensive picture of the phenomena analyzed emerges when researchers make use of methods accepted in both quantitative and qualitative research orientations. The article presents theoretical assumptions and interesting practical solutions of a mixed approach (a mixed methodology) in social research. On the one hand, solutions and methods recommended for the quantitative research can be useful for studies conducted in accordance with the assumptions of qualitative orientation, and on the other hand, solutions and methods recommended for the qualitative research may be useful for the studies conducted in accordance with the assumptions of quantitative orientation. Both approaches have been illustrated by particular examples of research practices.

W wielu wariantach tzw. metody biograficznej w socjologii zaleca się, aby opowieść o życiu rozmówcy (life story) uzupełnić wiedzą kontekstową, dotyczącą historii życia tej osoby (life history). W praktyce rzadko się to robi, głównie ze względu na brak dostępu do równoległych źródeł informacji. W tym artykule przedstawiamy dwa wywiady narracyjno-biograficzne, które zostały przeprowadzone z respondentami Polskiego Badania Panelowego POLPAN i w związku z tym ich analiza mogła zostać wzbogacona o wiedzę pochodzącą ze zgromadzonych w latach 1987–2013 wywiadów kwestionariuszowych (danych ilościowych). Prezentujemy sposób zestawienia materiałów i wnioski, jakie płyną z dokonanego porównania dla interpretacji danych pochodzących z różnych źródeł. Artykuł ma charakter przede wszystkim empiryczny, jednak zawiera także refleksje dotyczące (1) podziałów i napięć wewnątrzdyscyplinarnych w socjologii, (2) trudności w łączeniu odmiennych metod badawczych na poziomie danych, a nie tylko wniosków.
In many variants of the so-called biographical method in sociology it is recommended that the interviewee’s story about his or her life (life story) should be supplemented with contextual knowledge concerning the history of this person’s life (life history). In practice, this recommendation is rarely implemented, mainly because of the lack of access to parallel sources of information. In this article we present two biographical narrative interviews which have been conducted with respondents of the Polish Panel Survey POLPAN and for which it was possible to enrich the analysis by knowledge derived from questionnaire interviews (quantitative data) gathered between 1987 and 2013. We describe the way in which the interviews have been juxtaposed with the information recorded in the questionnaires and – based on this comparison – present suggestions for the interpretation of data from such different sources. The article is mainly empirical but also contains some reflections on (1) intradisciplinary divisions and tensions in sociology, (2) difficulties in combining different research methods on the data level rather than the level of conclusions.

Projekty, w których przychodzi nam pracować z dużymi wolumenami danych tekstowych, pochodzących z rożnych źródeł i zapisanych w różnorodnych formatach, rodzą wiele dylematów natury metodologicznej, wymagają często niestandardowych decyzji i rozwiązań. W szczególności zadanie polegające na opracowaniu danych o różnorodnej jakości, nieustrukturyzowanych typu quan i qual wymagać może pracy, w której dynamicznie zmieniają się strategie analizy danych, sposoby przekształcania danych tekstowych. Artykuł opisuje przykład takiej właśnie „dynamicznej” metodyki. Wykazała ona swoją wartość w zadaniu polegającym na klasyfikacji wypowiedzi pisanych. W tak zarysowanym kontekście autor artykułu mierzy się z następującymi celami: (a) czy można zastosować oprogramowanie klasy CAQDAS do pracy półautomatycznej lub automatycznej zastępującej część manualnej pracy nad klasyfikacją wypowiedzi? (b) jak skonstruować metodykę klasyfikacji dla danych o różnorodnej jakości? (c) kiedy klasyfikacja automatyczna jest przydatna, a kiedy nie ma szans powodzenia? W artykule zaznaczone zostaną momenty, w których analityk sięga po wiedzę typową dla analiz danych jakościowych oraz te, kiedy wiedza z tego obszaru nie jest już wystarczająca do realizacji wskazanych celów (natural language processing, uczenie maszynowe). Przykład projektu będący tłem artykułu wymusił zastosowanie kilku narzędzi i języków wspierających pracę na danych. Praca nad transformacją, klasyfikacją oraz wizualizacją wyników wymagała zastosowania bazy MySQL oraz programów: R, QDA Miner, Wordstat, QlikSense. Roli i ograniczeniom narzędzi klasy CAQDAS poświęconych zostało także kilka uwag.
Projects which we work with—large volumes of text data that are acquired from various sources and stored in a variety of formats—rise many dilemmas of a methodological nature, often require unstandardized decisions and solutions. In particular, compiling data of various quality, unstructured types, and of quan and qual nature requires dynamic strategies, ideas, and ways of analysis. The article describes an example of this approach. It shows its value in classification of written statements. In such context, the author of the article faces the following objectives: (a) can we use CAQDASso that semiautomatic or automatic work would replace some manual work regarding classification of the expressions; (b) how to construct a classification methodology for data of various quality; (c) when the automatic classification is useful and when there is no chance of success? The article will be marked with moments in which the analyst reaches for knowledge typical for qualitative data analysis, and when the knowledge of this area is no longer sufficient to classify content (natural language processing, machine learning). An example of a project being the background of this article forced the use of several tools and languages to support work with the data. Work on the transformation, classification, and visualization of results required applications such as: MySQL, R, QDA Miner, WordStat, Qlik Sense. Role and limits of the computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software tools have also been noted.

Celem artykułu jest zarysowanie procesowego podejścia do koncepcji mixed methods research z uwzględnieniem triangulacji konwergentnej i/lub holistycznej. Cel został zrealizowany poprzez przegląd literatury w obszarze mixed methods research i triangulacji jako koncepcji wspomagającej zagadnienie pluralizmu metod badawczych. Na strukturę artykułu składają się trzy zasadnicze części oraz zakończenie. W pierwszej części przedstawiono etiologię i przesłanki metodyczne pluralizmu metod badawczych (mixed methods research). Część druga opracowania dotyczy projektowania mixed methods research z ujęciem perspektywy triangulacji metodologicznej – opisano procedurę doboru metod w zależności od celu teoretycznego i metodycznego w badaniach mixed methods research z zastosowaniem triangulacji konwergentnej lub/i holistycznej. W części trzeciej zaprezentowano procesowe ujęcie projektu badawczego z zastosowaniem koncepcji mixed methods research w odniesieniu do triangulacji konwergentnej i/lub holistycznej. W zakończeniu uwagę poświęcono głównie zaletom i ograniczeniom przedstawianej koncepcji.

There is a relationship between selected factors of creation of authorized car organization and phenomeno-logical conception. In marketing, this philosophical method is used in qulitative research. Mixed research methods are used in studies connected with the existence of dealership organization. The research done among the clients of the authorized car service shows, that customers do not want to in-dependently tell their opinion about the organization. This happens, because there are so many technical indicators in car service organization. Customers who indicate the reason themselves for the visit in car ser-vice organization assess the quality service worse than those who choose the reason from the questionnaire. In addition, customers who are independent in determining actions needed it to be improved, later assess the quality of service better. In summary, mixed research methods allow to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the organization.

Space exploration is currently gaining momentum. This interest is crucial for attracting students to space sciences. We present the results of a qualitative and quantitative study on space exploration perception among university students. Our study showed that participants are interested in space sciences, but their intention to engage in space education is low. Female and male students did not differ in terms of general attitude and interest in space and were equally (not) likely to engage in space education and career. Our findings have practical value for designing interventions to enhance students’ engagement in space education.

Celem artykułu jest refleksja metodologiczna nad dialektyczną relacją pomiędzy procesem badawczym a procesem wspomaganej komputerowo analizy danych jakościowych. Na podstawie długoletniego doświadczenia w korzystaniu z różnych narzędzi CAQDAS autor stara się ukazać ich wpływ na zmianę sposobu myślenia o metodologii, procesie analizy danych i prowadzeniu terenowych badań jakościowych. Specyfika użycia CAQDAS w praktyce badawczej wymaga swoistego rygoryzmu metodologicznego w procesie gromadzenia i archiwizacji danych oraz dokładności i precyzji w procesie kodowania, analizy i wizualizacji danych jakościowych. Zastosowanie komputerowej analizy danych jakościowych w praktyce badawczej kształtuje nie tylko ramy interpretacji socjologicznej, ale przede wszystkim zmienia optykę i sposób percepcji problemów badawczych. Istotą tego procesu jest swoista interakcja pomiędzy nowymi technologiami a tradycyjną metodologią analizy danych i prowadzenia badań jakościowych. W tym sensie korzystanie z CAQDAS w praktyce badań jakościowych kształtuje osobowość i tożsamość badacza jakościowego, jego styl pracy i warsztat analityczno-badawczy oraz sprzyja rozwijaniu nowych umiejętności analitycznych i informatycznych, bez których trudno wyobrazić sobie współczesne jakościowe badania socjologiczne.
The purpose of this article is methodological reflection on dialectical relationship between the qualitative research process and the process of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis. Basing on many years of experience in the work with various CAQDAS tools, the author tries to show the impact they have on shifting the way of thinking on methodology, the process of data analysis and conducting qualitative research. The specificity of CAQDAS usage in research practice requires methodological rigor in the process of collection and archiving of data, as well as the accuracy and precision in the process of coding, analyzing, and visualizing data. The use of computer-aided analysis of qualitative data in research practice not only shapes a framework for the sociological interpretation but also changes the way of perceiving research problems. The essence of this process is a specific interaction between new technologies and traditional methodology, data analysis, and qualitative research. In this sense, the use of CAQDAS in qualitative research practice is shaping the personality and identity of qualitative researcher, his/her style of work, data analysis, and conducting the fieldwork; it develops his or her new analytical and computer skills without which it is difficult to imagine a modern qualitative sociological research.

The low achievement of long jump athletes and the limited virtual-based aquatic plyometric exercises to increase lower extremity muscle strength are the gaps in this study. This study aims to increase lower extremity muscle strength of long jump athletes through virtual-based plyometric aquatic training. This research adopted a mixed methods research. This study involved participants from long jump athletes at the University of Tanjung Pura in Indonesia (n = 20). Participants were divided into two groups, namely an experimental group (n = 10) and control group (n = 10). The quantitative instrument involved a leg dynamometer for measuring lower extremity muscle strength. While, the qualitative instrument used in-depth interview. Quantitative data analysis was carried out through IBM SPSS to calculate descriptive statistics and normality, while the paired sample t-test to test differences in lower extremity muscle strength values in the experimental and control groups. Qualitative analysis was carried out through recording, describing and coding stages, which categorized into three themes. Based on quantitative results, it showed that virtual-based plyometric aquatic training was proven significantly increase lower extremity muscle strength (ps0.05), but there was no significant effect in the control group (p & 0.05). Qualitative results found out that most of the participants gave a positive opinion regarding virtual-based plyometric aquatics. Thus, this study confirms that virtual-based plyometric aquatic training can be used to increase lower extremity muscle strength.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie podstawowych założeń podejścia – określanego dalej jako „integralne”, które miałoby połączyć te dwa rozbieżne wymogi: pluralizmu i integralności. Tłem dla podejścia integralnego jest uporządkowanie podejść spotykanych w metodologii na pluralistyczne i monistyczne. Podejście integralne stanowiłoby także próbę przezwyciężenia fundamentalnego podziału na podejście przyczynowe i symboliczne, który wyraźnie zarysowany został już w dyskusjach XIX-wiecznych. W rozważanej tu wersji podejścia integralnego zasadnicze założenie dotyczy odpowiedniego wykorzystania wnioskowań kontrfaktycznych w taki sposób, by wyodrębnić istotne przyczynowo zjawiska, a następnie wśród nich określić czynniki reprezentatywne dla wszystkich rodzajów badań. Szczególnie zauważalne jest to w przypadku prowadzenia zróżnicowanych metodologicznie badań różnych płaszczyzn ontologicznych.
The purpose of the article is to present the basic assumptions of the approach – hereinafter referred to as “integral”, which would combine two divergent requirements: pluralism and integrity. The background for an integral approach is to organize the approaches found in the pluralistic and monistic methodological standpoints. An integrated approach would also attempt to overcome the fundamental distinction between causal and symbolic approaches that has already been clearly outlined in the discussion of nineteenth-century. As contemplated herein the essential assumption of the integral approach concerns the use of a suitable counterfactual inference so as to extract causes of the relevant phenomena, and then determine factors representative for all types of studies involved in a given research process. Particularly noticeable is the case for conducting methodologically diverse studies of different ontological levels.

Use of mixed methods research design in knowledge creation. Case study on public health

Na podstawie epistemologicznej koncepcji tworzenia wiedzy naukowej proponuję nowy sposób oceny roli metod mieszanych w badaniach: przez odniesienie ich nie tylko do poziomu publikacji, lecz także do projektu badawczego. Na przykładzie wybranych publikacji z zakresu zdrowia publicznego wskazuję dwie różne role metod mieszanych w tworzeniu nowej wiedzy: rola generatywna na poziomie projektu badawczego oraz synteza dotychczasowej wiedzy na poziomie pojedynczych publikacji.
Based on the epistemological concept of scientific knowledge creation, I propose a new way of assessing the role of mixed methods research design: by referring them not only to the level of publication but also to the research project. On the example of selected public health publications, I point to two different roles of mixed methods in the creation of new knowledge: a generative role at the level of a research project and the synthesis of existing knowledge at the level of publication.

Over the last few decades, the Iranian Kurdish society, including family and kin¬ship systems, has experienced enormous changes as a result of government im-plemented modernization efforts. This paper reports the results of a quantitative/ qualitative mixed methods study aimed at exploring (a) the nature of change in family and kinship systems and (b) how people understand and interpret these changes. The sample for this study was drawn from the Mangor and Gawerk tri¬bes residing in the Mahabad Township located in the West Azerbaijan Province of Iran. Using standardized questionnaires, 586 people were sampled as part of the quantitative portion of the study. For the qualitative portion, data was collected on 20 people using both in-depth interviews and participant observations. The quantitative data was analyzed by SPSS software and the qualitative data was in¬terpreted using grounded theory procedures. The quantitative findings showed that the urbanization, modern education, and mass media have all contributed to the emergence of a new form of family and kinship life. In addition, while sup¬porting quantitative findings, the qualitative results revealed that participants were aware of and sensitive to sources, processes, and effects of modernization on their family and kinship life.
