    Historically, approaches within the field of migrant entrepreneurship have almost exclusively focused on migration to nation-states in the Global North. Despite more-recent studies extending the scope to migrants’ home countries – and even third-country locations – they have nonetheless remained rooted in South–North migratory contexts and, subsequently, have been mainly theorised based on the concept of persistent power imbalances internationally. Indeed, studies of migrant entrepreneurship in reverse (North–South) migratory contexts have exposed a number of assumptions implicit within these approaches. What is needed, therefore, is a theoretical approach which can account for the global asymmetry hitherto overlooked in the field of migrant entrepreneurship. This paper aims to do exactly that, offering the concept of ‘global embeddedness’, which situates the phenomenon of migrant entrepreneurship within a wider, asymmetrical global environment and, in so doing, provides a way of accounting for variations in migrant entrepreneurship found outside of the Global North.

    The network view can be successfully employed while investigating the role of relationships in deriving the competitive advantage of contemporary supply chains. Prior studies, when elaborating on the competitive advantage of supply chains, are mostly anchored in either the resource-based view or the dyadic view, as two complementary, but distinct concepts. Consequently, there is a dearth of studies that elaborate on the concept of network competitive advantage as the extension of relational view. To address this gap, this study aims to combine the network view of competitive advantage with embeddedness as an important dimension of the social capital. In this study, the concept of structural and relational embeddedness has been employed to offer a systematic conceptual analysis of the network competitive advantages of triadic supply chains. Based on this conceptual reasoning, we then build key theoretical propositions that aid in deeper understanding of how the relationships are shaped by the social capital to derive the network competitive advantage of supply chains.
    Podejście sieciowe może być z powodzeniem wykorzystane w badaniu roli, jaką odgrywają relacje międzyorganizacyjne w osiąganiu przewagi konkurencyjnej współczesnych łańcuchów dostaw. Dotychczasowe publikacje podejmujące tę tematykę są z reguły zakotwiczone w teorii zasobowej lub ujęciu diadycznym, jako dwóch komplementarnych, lecz odmiennych perspektywach poznawczych. W rezultacie brakuje badań, które podejmowałyby problematykę sieciowej przewagi konkurencyjnej będącej rozszerzeniem szkoły relacyjnej. Celem artykułu jest wykorzystanie koncepcji zakorzenienia społecznego (w szczególności zakorzenienia strukturalnego i relacyjnego) w rozpoznaniu sieciowej przewagi konkurencyjnej. W wyniku przeprowadzonych rozważań sformułowano postulaty, które umożliwiają głębsze zrozumienie roli zakorzenienia społecznego w kształtowaniu relacji międzyorganizacyjnych służących budowaniu przewagi konkurencyjnej łańcuchów dostaw.

    Research of industrial enterprises concerning their impact on the surroundings through multiplier effects is becoming more and more important due to changes in the organisation of production processes. They mainly result from the increasing technological advancement of products and the need to achieve the expected financial effect, which is possible only through large-scale production. The result of these components is a continuous increase in the specialisation of both companies and individual industrial plants. These processes are reflected in contemporary models of industrialisation, which show that companies operate on the basis of more and more complex value-added chains. This increases the indirect impact of enterprises on the development of the surroundings. The article aims to present the mechanism of functioning of multiplier effects and indicate factors that affect different sizes, as well as the scale of their range. It also presents the evolution of the idea of multiplier effects on the ground of macroeconomics and shows the contribution of Polish researchers to this trend of knowledge. It should be noted that the research to date in this area is not often undertaken both on scientific grounds and in the field of broadly understood economic consulting for the benefit of local government units, which results mainly from the lack of data. The need to obtain detailed data, particularly financial data, within the company chain is a crucial barrier.

    Ranggeh River is one of the inlets of Lake Maninjau (West Sumatra, Indonesia), which has a vital role in supporting the life of native fish. Increasing anthropogenic activities (agriculture and human settlements) around the river can harm benthic macroinvertebrates as natural food for fish. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze and observe water quality changes and their impact on the benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the Ranggeh River. Sampling was conducted from February to August 2019 using the Hess Sampler tool. The results indicate that the anthropogenic impacts around the Ranggeh River on water quality has changed the macroinvertebrate benthic community structures (composition, abundance, and biological index). Furthermore, the Ephemeroptera Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) number of taxa index were superior in reflecting disturbances in the Ranggeh River compared to the Family Biotic Index (FBI) and the Percent Model Affinity (PMA). In conclusion, the anthropogenic effect on the macroinvertebrate community in the Ranggeh River prominently was caused by habitat changes rather than enrichment by nutrients (TN and TP).

    Guy Standing's book The Precariat has had a significant impact in stimulating a debate about the changing nature of work across the broad sweep of the global economy. He advances the notion of precarious workers, originally put forward by Italian autonomist Marxists, to suggest that they constitute a new and separate class. This article reflects on the notion of precarious work and addresses the temporal, historical and analytical weaknesses manifest in many accounts by proposing a political economy synthesis. The discussion takes place through the theoretical lens of embeddedness that takes seriously the structures and institutions of capitalism and the agency of workers individually and collectively. First, it is argued that two key influences on the structural embeddedness of precarity are the spatiality of capitalism and its endemic tendency to crisis. Second, the temporal and institutional embeddedness of precarity is discussed in historical and comparative context. Third, the agential influence on embeddedness is examined with regard to the possibility of the self-organization precarious workers and their potential for forging solidarity with other groups. The article concludes that precarious work is intrinsic to capitalism and therefore the precariat cannot be understood as a class in itself. The implications of this for activists is that solidarity needs to be forged between all groups of workers in order to organise for decent and stable employment.

    This paper analyses neighbourhood embeddedness of immigrant and non-immigrant populations in six European cities. We define neighbourhood embeddedness as an individual level concept and distinguish two main dimensions: place and network embeddedness. The neighbourhood embeddedness concept provides us with the possibility to study attitudinal and behavioural aspects of individuals related to the place of living. Using data from the ‘Generating Interethnic Tolerance and Neighbourhood Integration in European Urban Spaces’ (GEITONIES) project, we explore communalities and differences in the degree of embeddedness and its underlyingmechanisms for immigrant and non-immigrant residents across a set of different neighbourhood types. Our findings suggest that neighbourhoods are still important focal points of social life. But immigrants are characterized by higher levels of neighbourhood embeddedness than native residents which are mostly related to the strong link between perceived feelings of attachment to the people in the neighbourhood and the place as such.

    Employers are the key actors in defining conditions for retirement, as well as the conditions for retaining employees; their role, however, is still not well recognised and expressed in theoretical frameworks. In order to better understand individual retirement and to design successful ageing policies we should consider the behaviour and attitudes of employers.The article presents the organisational perspective on retirement and contributes to a theoretical consideration of the role of employers and work environments in the retirement process. It discusses the classic economic approaches, including the deferred payment model, and in referring to sociology of economy and management sciences it presents the employer’s perspective in relations with older workers. The main goal of the article is to consider the retirement process as an effect of employer-employee relations.

    Nowadays the entrepreneurship phenomenon is of great importance. Small business is considered a criticalI become a subject of common approval and growing legitimization as well as of intensive governmentalsupport in various forms. In public debate and public policy, the idea of deregulation, relating to actions limit-in the public debate and public policy, providing entrepreneurs with subsidies and other kind of support isbased on the interventionism doctrine. Therefore, an ideational entrepreneurship system is created at the publicauthority level which seeks to explain and justify a certain shape of support policy for entrepreneurs. The paperargues that entrepreneurship could be perceived as an ideational embedded economic action. In order to illustratethe ideational embeddedness of entrepreneurship, EU and Polish public policy discourse form 2000–2010 wasanalysed. The objects of qualitative discourse analysis were, among others, governmental documents, strate-gies, and public statements.

    Conventional economic theories assume that competing firms act independently. This theoretical assumption is applied to economic policies and anti-trust legislation. In contrast, economic sociology describes competition as a special type of social action that is oriented towards others. More specifically, to remain in the market, competing firms monitor one another and cooperate by establishing inter-organisational social ties. This paper demonstrates that increasing market pressures, including higher levels of competition and stronger bargaining power among exchange partners, does not disrupt social ties but promotes them. Data for the analysis were collected in 2007 from 501 managers of retail chains and their suppliers in five Russia’s cities (Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, and Tyumen). The sample includes firms of different sizes that operate in the food and electronics sectors of the consumer market.

    This article presents the conception of embeddedness, which offers a new look at the development of rural areas based on their endogenous resources and the stimulation of their communities. The case in point will be the conditions and resources of the commune of Sieraków, located in the north-western part of Wielkopolska voivodeship in Poland, that contribute to its local development. Ways will be presented of reinforcing embeddedness, so as to help the commune keep as much as possible of the value added produced by the activity (agricultural and non-agricultural) of its residents, assisted by an efficient use of endogenous resources and geared to its further development.
    W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję zakorzenienia, która jest nowym spojrzeniem na możliwość rozwoju lokalnego obszarów wiejskich w oparciu o występujące tam zasoby endogenne oraz mechanizm stymulowania społeczności. W tym kontekście pokazane zostały warunki i zasoby gminy miejsko-wiejskiej Sieraków położonej w północno-zachodniej części województwa wielkopolskiego, które przyczyniają się do jej rozwoju lokalnego. Sieraków w oparciu o zasoby przyrodnicze jest gminą wypoczynkową, stanowiąc turystyczne zaplecze Poznania. Przystosowanie walorów do użytkowania turystycznego wymaga podjęcia odpowiednich zorganizowanych działań, które z jednej strony powinny ułatwiać i uatrakcyjniać ich zwiedzanie, drugiej – zabezpieczać przed niszczeniem przez turystów obszarów cennych przyrodniczo. Gmina Sieraków jest przypadkiem dobrze ilustrującym praktyczne zasady zakorzenienia opartego na kompleksowej usłudze turystycznej.

    W artykule ukazano działanie ekonomiczne, jakim jest przedsiębiorczość, z perspektywy zakorzenienia (embeddedness). Zakorzenienie działania ekonomicznego stanowi jedno z podstawowych założeń teoretycznych współczesnej socjologii ekonomicznej. Idea ta głosi, iż aktywność podmiotów w sferze gospodarczej warunkują struktury poznawcze (cognition) i społeczne, kultura oraz polityka. Scharakteryzowano wybrane teorie i badania, które pośrednio lub bezpośrednio odwołują się do argumentu zakorzenienia w rozpoczynaniu, pro- wadzeniu i utrzymaniu działalności biznesowej. Na podstawie przedstawionej w opracowaniu analizy idei zakorzenienia działania ekonomicznego stwierdzono, że należy uznać go nie tyle za spójny koncept teoretyczny, ile raczej za schemat mogący służyć jako ramy rozważań określonych zagadnień ze sfery ekonomii. Może on pełnić funkcje porządkujące, choć nie w sposób wyczerpujący, socjologiczne podejście do zjawiska działalności gospodarczej i stanowić alternatywne spojrzenie wobec szeroko pojętej orientacji ekonomicznej.
    In the paper entrepreneurship is presented from the embeddedness perspective as a type of economic action. The concept of the embeddedness of economic action is one of the key theoretical foundation of contemporary economic sociology. According to this idea the economic activity is determined by cognition, social structures, culture and politics. Selected theories are described, as well as empirical studies concerning setting up, running and maintaining a firm, directly or indirectly situated in the embeddedness paradigm. Based on the analysis of the embeddedness theory, the author argues that embeddedness is not a coherent theoretical concept but rather a potential framework for investigating various economic issues. It constitutes a scheme which could organize sociological approach to economic activity in a way alternative to economics.

    Traditional cooperative banks are considered as locally and socially embedded, lending to local clients from locally collected deposits and financing the local economy.. To offset their disadvantage due to their insufficient size, they exploit the information advantage deriving from their geographical proximity to their clients and the advantages of their peculiar corporate governance deriving from the member-ownership. This paper examines the relevant theories on cooperative finance, while examining the underlying geographical and corporate governance aspects in a less advanced transition economy environment. Governments’ preference towards commercial banking and at the same time their negligence towards the cooperatives in general led to a loose financial regulation of the sector. The limits of cooperatives’ corporate governance and demutualization intensify when loosing social/local embeddedness. Cooperative banks, located in the periphery with insufficient socio-economic conditions to develop closer relationships with borrowers accelerate capital flight from their regions. Commercial cooperatives entering new markets show higher lending activity but have more non-performing loans due to the lost information advantage.

    This paper investigates how old Dutch firms display their corporate identity on the Internet, with special attention paid to location and place. Several scholars argue that the Internet would create the ‘end-of-geography’. Current empirical investigation found that incumbent firms display a strong sense-of-place in the presentation of ‘self’ on their websites. Location is important for old firms' images, underlining the importance of embeddedness. Location remains important when firms compete on the ‘global level’ on the Internet. This paper therefore contributes to the understanding of place and local embeddedness of firms in the ‘global internet space’.

    The article analyses dynamics of social capital that can explain how Turkish immigrants in Finland become self-employed and why they have established themselves within a particular economic sector. The mixed embeddedness perspective on ethnic and immigrant entrepreneurship is utilised to achieve a better understanding of these processes. The interview study indicates that immigrants are able to establish ethnic economies also in countries with relatively small and geographically dispersed immigrant populations. Immigrant entrepreneurs can mobilise transnational social capital for the establishment of businesses, but only under circumstances where transnational resources can be utilised as a local resource. To understand the dynamics of immigrants businesses requires an analysis of the embeddedness of immigrants in a simultaneously transnational and local social context.

    It would not be much of an exaggeration to say that the notion of ecological and social embeddedness is one of the most exploited philosophical ideas these days, both in the academia and beyond. The most troublesome about the overall trend is that many proponents of the idea of social embeddedness simplistically consider selfhood as a form of aberration which merely provides vindication for inequality and violence. In this paper, instead of attacking the problem of the individual versus the collective head-on, I approach it by way of a critique of Stephen Turner’s repudiation of transcendental collectivism (Turner, 1994; Turner, 2010). According to Turner, transcendental entities, such as tacit knowledge, presuppositions, or traditions, should be altogether removed from explanatory schemata in the social sciences. I believe that Turner’s razor cuts too deep and the rejection of implicit framing is at best premature. Against the background of the identified shortcomings of Turner’s model of interactive learning, I track the interrelations between social development and the development of the self with an eye to showing that the relationship between individual selves and social reality is an extremely complex and multifactorial matter which we cannot hope to navigate without a proper transcendental frame. The frame is what mediates the relationship between the individual and the collective.

    Niniejsze opracowanie przedstawia dorobek socjologii ekonomicznej z zakresu badań nad zjawiskami cen i wartości oraz przeciwstawia go uproszczonemu podejściu przyjętemu przez ekonomię neoklasyczną. Ta ostatnia postrzega wartość przez pryzmat ceny oraz zakłada istnienie stałych preferencji zatomizowanych jednostek funkcjonujących na izolowanych rynkach. Socjologia zakłada natomiast, że ani cena, ani pieniądzb nie są rzeczywistymi miernikami wartości oraz próbuje zrozumieć formowanie się cen nie jako wyniku indywidualnych preferencji, ale jako rezultatu społecznych i politycznych czynników warunkujących funkcjonowanie rynku.
    This paper reviews the research of economic sociology on the phenomena of prices and valuation and contrasts it with the simplified approach of neoclassical economy. The latter perceives value through the prism of prices and assumes fixed preferences of atomized actors acting on isolated markets. Sociology posits instead that neither money nor prices are the true measuring rod of worth and tries to understand how prices are set not as an outcome of individual preferences, but as a result of social and political factors determining the functioning of markets.

    Background: Leveraging the relational embeddedness perspective, we empirically investigate whether hybrid governance (perceived as a combination of market and hierarchy), and the alternate modes of governance (non-market and non-hierarchal) are capable of providing the social layer to governance within the three-tier supply chain framework. Methods: The study covers two research stages. In the first stage, the variables that demonstrate two modes of formal governance (both market and hierarchy) are reduced through the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to highlight the main underlying multi-item factors. In the second stage of our research, the cluster analysis is conducted to compare different clusters in terms of relational embeddedness. As our research is exploratory in nature, we used non-parametric tests to evaluate the significance of results. Results: The results evidence that that along with the pure mechanisms of supply chain governance (market and hierarchy), one may also identify both the hybrid and alternate modes. It corresponds to four clusters embracing three-tier supply chains with different governance mechanisms: the alternate mode, market, hybrid and hierarchy. Likewise, the study shows that both market and hybrid governance demonstrate the strongest relational embeddedness of both dyads. On the other hand, though the alternate mode of governance, perceived as neither market nor hierarchy, demonstrates stronger relational embeddedness than pure hierarchy, nevertheless the strength of its relational embeddedness is significantly lower as compared to market governance. Conclusions: The study shows that it is difficult to reveal clearly delineated tendencies regarding both the hybrid and alternate modes of governance in terms of relational embeddedness. In fact, the hybrid mode of governance should be rather linked to market as they both are very similar, while the alternate mode of governance demonstrates a moderate strength of relational embeddedness. On the other hand, the lowest strength of relational embeddedness is still reported by hierarchy.
    Wstęp: Artykuł podejmuje próbę zbadania czy hybrydowe (postrzegane jako kombinacja rynku i hierarchii) oraz alternatywne (nierynkowe i niehierarchiczne) mechanizmy koordynacji umożliwiają wyłonienie aspektu społecznego, wzbogacającego proces regulacji działań wielopodmiotowych w triadycznych łańcuchach dostaw. Metody: W warstwie empirycznej badania obejmują dwa etapy. W pierwszym etapie dokonano redukcji zmiennych manifestujących dwa formalne mechanizmy koordynacji działań wielopodmiotowych (rynek i hierarchię) za pomocą analizy głównych składowych. W kolejnym etapie badania przeprowadzono analizę skupień w celu porównania zróżnicowanych grup łańcuchów dostaw ze względu na zakorzenienie relacyjne. W celu identyfikacji poziomu istotności w artykule wykorzystano nieparametryczne testy statystyczne. Wyniki: Badanie pokazało, że obok stricto rynkowych i hierarchicznych mechanizmów koordynacji działań w badanych łańcuchach dostaw występują również mechanizmy hybrydowe i alternatywne. Korespondują one ze zidentyfikowanymi czterema grupami łańcuchów dostaw. Ponadto, rynkowy, jak i hybrydowy mechanizm koordynacji wyróżnia najwyższy stopień zakorzenienia relacyjnego obu diad w badanych strukturach triadycznych. Z drugiej strony, mimo że alternatywny mechanizm koordynacji, postrzegany jako nierynkowy i niehierarchiczny, wskazuje wyższy stopień zakorzenienia relacyjnego w stosunku do mechanizmu hierarchicznego, to jednak siła jego zakorzenienia relacyjnego jest istotnie niższa w stosunku do zakorzeniania relacyjnego wskazywanego przez mechanizm rynkowy. Podsumowanie: Przeprowadzone badania pokazują, że trudno jest praktycznie wskazać określone tendencje dotyczące zarówno hybrydowego, jak i alternatywnego mechanizmu koordynacji działań wielopodmiotowych w kontekście zakorzenienia relacyjnego diad w strukturach triadycznych. Niemniej, hybrydowy mechanizm koordynacji powinien być raczej łączony z mechanizmem rynkowym, z kolei, alternatywny mechanizm koordynacji pokazuje umiarkowaną, a mechanizm hierarchiczny najniższą siłę zakorzenienia relacyjnego.

Artykuł nawiązuje i uzupełnia koncepcję lokalnego osadzenia działalności międzynarodowej oraz model sieciowy internacjonalizacji. Wykazano, że silne osadzenie w relacjach krajowych na poziomie interpersonalnym i międzyorganizacyjnym może stanowić dla MSP rozwiązanie służące pokonaniu wyzwań oraz barier związanych z internacjonalizacją. Rozważania zobrazowano studium przypadku dwóch małych przedsiębiorstw z branży IT i meblarskiej.
    The aim of this article is to analyse the importance of domestic interpersonal and interorganisational relationships for the start of the internationalisation and the subsequent foreign activity of small and medium-sized enterprises. The article refers and complements the concept of domestic embeddedness and network model of internationalisation. It has been shown that a strong embeddedness in the domestic interpersonal and interorganisational relationships can be a solution for SMEs to overcome the challenges and barriers of internationalisation. The analysis is illustrated by a case study of two small companies from the IT and furniture industries.

    Starting by the very fact that Mark Granovetter’s notion of “social embeddedness” became very successful by establishing new economic sociology in the 1980s yet it is argued that current economic sociology needs to work on a stronger connection to institutional arguments. It is shown that this can be based on new theoretical developments by linking micro and macro level. This article reconstructs Granovetter’s attempt of working within an action-based framework that has strong ties to the work of MaxWeber as well as to some parts of new institutionalism. The particularity of Granovetter’s approach is seen in his assumption that individuals’ interests as well as their economic actions are socially embedded in “networks of social interactions” that influence the economic outcome. With regard to Max Weber and new institutionalism, it is then argued that Mark Granovetter omits to carefully consider both firstly how mutual expectations defined within social relations are affected by more general social expectations (the institutional framework) and secondly what kind of coordination problems are precisely solved by social relations through information or expectation. But this would be important for a more complex and more realistic picture of economy. Therefore, it is recommended to analyze the interplay of different social mechanisms-social capital, trust, legitimacy, hierarchy, social entrepreneurs-that work either through information in a network, group norms or generalized expectations in an wider institutional framework. In conclusion, a methodological suggestion is made by combining historical-empirical work with theoretical arguments.

    This paper explores how diasporans achieve business model innovation by using their unique resources. The hypothesis underlying the paper is that the unique backgrounds and resources of the diaspora businesses, due to different sources of information and experiences as well as multiple networks, contributes to business model innovation in a distinctive manner. We investigate the English school market in the Philippines which is established by East Asian diaspora who innovate a business model of conventional English schools. Two case studies were conducted with Japanese diaspora English schools. Their business is analyzed using a business model canvas (Osterwalder & Pigneur, 2010) and contrasted with the conventional business model. The empirical cases show that diaspora businesses use knowledge about their country of origin and engage with country of residence and multiple networks in different locations and constellations to identify unique opportunities, leading to a business model innovation.

    This paper seeks to develop contextual constructionism through elaboration of the concept of context and the articulation of an accompanying methodology for empirical research. I approach context as a construct involving awareness when: (1) claims-makers define contexts in social problem debates, and (2) academic analysts do likewise in studying those debates and their outcomes. Such constructions can either converge or diverge, both within and across groups of claims-makers and analysts, with significant consequences for understanding and interaction. Importantly, context is never singular, for it always presupposes at least two related settings, namely, an immediate situation involving claims that is embedded in a more distant or general one which has at least a short-term historical dimension. Both social problems claims-makers and constructionist analysts, moreover, engage in “context work,” that is, efforts to sustain an overarching sense of setting between periods of social problems claims-making and research on them. I suggest that analysts examine claims-makers’ discourse in order to identify their view of context, and then apply the same scrutiny to their own presuppositions. Analysts should also be alert to strategic uses of context as a resource (“context gaming”), they should map significant shifts in constructions of context and pay attention to unobtrusive factors that might not yet have entered awareness. Finally, analysts should avoid overly deterministic accounts. For although contexts, as constructed, do indeed impose constraints, they ought not to be seen as eliminating agency, but only as locating it in ways that facilitate sociological insight.

    The purpose of the paper is to present the importance of locally embedded personal relationships and individuals’ networks for the rise of small and medium enterprises (SMEs)’ opportunities in the internationalisation process (especially the market entry phase) as well as their international operations and growth. Above all, the aim of the article is to answer the question what is influencing the actual impact of these resulting opportunities on internationalisation and growth. This paper adopts both a conceptual and empirical approach to the problem based upon a critical review of pertinent literature. Two case studies of companies from industries representing different levels of technological advancement, that is the furniture industry and IT industry, are presented.The theoretical and empirical analysis presented in the article points to the fact that relationships simultaneously facilitate opportunity recognition and themselves constitute such an opportunity. The analysis carried out as part of the case study proves that main factors determining the rise of the opportunity based on locally embedded personal relationships are trust and mutual understanding, in this way emphasising the importance of relational embeddedness. At the same time the realisation of these opportunities and therefore their impact on the internationalisation process and a company’s growth requires additional social factors (an entrepreneurial attitude) as well as economic factors (such as quality and competitive prices).

    This paper is intended to theoretically examine the premises of the regional development paradigm. It discusses key conceptual categories and the logical structure of the idea to highlight comparative differences between the traditional and territorial understanding of space and its impact on economic development. Further considerations focus on the interpretation of derivative notions such as territorial capital, territorialisation of economic development, and development policy. The applied research method consists of a critical analysis of the literature on the subject, supplemented with an analysis of reports and expert opinions prepared for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the European Commission. Recent decades have witnessed an in-depth reinterpretation of the meaning of space in economic development processes. The term “territory” is no longer identified with a static location and a simple accumulation of resources. It is interpreted as a place that is dynamic in terms of time and space and that has emerged from interactions and network relationships with its own informal institutions and specific resources, which facilitate the attainment of improved economic efficiency. It is also perceived as a dynamic organisational structure that reduces uncertainty and risk and as a place where resources are generated and accumulated, and within which knowledge, innovation, and skills are transferred. Place-based development produces a specific system of relationships and a creative social and economic framework that can be adapted to changes by creating new resources and development opportunities.
    Celem artykułu jest analiza teoretyczna twierdzeń terytorialnego paradygmatu rozwoju. Artykuł opisuje kluczowe kategorie pojęciowe i konstrukcję logiczną tej koncepcji, by na tak określonej podbudowie przejść do pokazania różnic, w ujęciu komparatywnym pomiędzy tradycyjnym a terytorialnym rozumieniem przestrzeni i jej wpływu na procesy rozwoju gospodarczego. W dalszych rozważaniach dokonano interpretacji pojęć pokrewnych, takich jak kapitał terytorialny, terytorializacja procesów gospodarczego i polityki rozwoju. Zastosowana metoda badawcza to krytyczna analiza literatury przedmiotu uzupełniona o analizę raportów i ekspertyz opracowywanych przez OECD oraz Komisję Europejską. W ostatnich dekadach nastąpiła daleko idąca reinterpretacja znaczenia przestrzeni w procesach rozwoju gospodarczego. Przestrzeń przestaje być utożsamiana ze statycznym miejscem lokalizacji i prostej kumulacji zasobów. Terytorium interpretowane jako dynamiczne w czasie i przestrzeni, miejsce tworzone przez interakcje i relacje sieciowe, posiadające własne instytucje nieformalne i zasoby specyficzne, umożliwiające osiągnięcie wyższego poziomu efektywności gospodarczej. Postrzegane jest jako dynamiczna forma organizacji redukująca niepewność i ryzyko, stanowiąca źródło tworzenia i kumulowania zasobów oraz transferu wiedzy, innowacji i umiejętności. Rozwój terytorialny prowadzi do powstania specyficznego układu relacji i kreatywnego sytemu społeczno-gospodarczego, zdolnego do dostosowania się do zmian i tworzenia nowych zasobów oraz możliwości rozwoju.

    The host country environment is an important source of knowledge for multinational enterprises (MNEs). The resources and competencies of MNEs’ foreign subsidiaries (FS) as well as internal and external relationships are perceived to be critically important for their performance. This study intends to fill a cognitive gap in the understanding of factors influencing the innovation performance of FS established in Poland. FS innovation performance is explained by their resourcebased specific advantages, internal embeddedness in the corporate network, external embeddedness, and by interactions between their systemic power and autonomy. The analysis is based on a 2018 survey of 436 manufacturing FS in Poland. The ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model was applied, along with three quantile regression equations to provide additional layers of detail. We observed a positive influence of FS’ own assets on innovation performance, especially if coupled with their deep internal embeddedness. The study also found a positive influence of internal embeddedness on innovation performance enhanced for high/medium-high-tech firms if coinciding with strong resource-based specific advantages. Another finding was that the external embeddedness of FS had a positive effect on their innovation performance. Besides, the positive influence of systemic power on innovation performance was only revealed for high/medium-high-tech FS, while the subsidiaries’ autonomy showed no significant influence on their innovation performance.
    Środowisko kraju goszczącego jest ważnym źródłem wiedzy dla przedsiębiorstw międzynarodowych. Zasoby i kompetencje filii zagranicznych (FZ) przedsiębiorstw międzynarodowych, a także ich relacje wewnętrzne i zewnętrzne są postrzegane jako krytyczne dla ich wyników ekonomicznych. Niniejsze opracowanie ma na celu wypełnienie luki poznawczej dotyczącej czynników wpływających na sprawność innowacyjną FZ utworzonych w Polsce. Sprawność innowacyjną FZ tłumaczy się ich przewagami opartymi na własnych zasobach: zakorzenieniem w wewnętrznej sieci korporacyjnej, zakorzenieniem zewnętrznym (w relacjach z niezależnymi partnerami) oraz poprzez interakcje między siłą systemową i autonomią FZ. Analiza opiera się na wynikach badania przeprowadzonego w 2018 r. w 436 FZ zlokalizowanych w Polsce. Zastosowano model OLS (metoda najmniejszych kwadratów) oraz trzy równania regresji kwantylowej, dostarczające bardziej szczegółowych wyników. Zaobserwowano: pozytywny wpływ zasobów własnych filii na ich sprawność innowacyjną, zwłaszcza w połączeniu z ich silnym wewnętrznym zakorzenieniem; pozytywny wpływ wewnętrznego zakorzenienia na innowacyjność, silniejszy wśród FZ w branżach wysokiej/średniowysokiej techniki, w połączeniu z przewagami opartymi na zasobach; pozytywny wpływ zewnętrznego zakorzenienia FZ na sprawność innowacyjną. Poza tym udowodniono: pozytywny wpływ siły systemowej na sprawność innowacyjną, ale tylko w przypadku FZ z branż wysokiej/średniowysokiej techniki. Nie zaobserwowano znaczącego wpływu autonomii FZ na ich wyniki innowacyjne.

    This paper intervenes in the Granovetter-Polanyi debate by reassessing the level of embeddedness of social and economic relations under conditions of systemic transition. Using panel data collected in Poland, this analysis examines this relationship for three distinct periods of transition: initial (1988–1993), advanced (1993–1998), and post-transitional (1998–2003). This paper shows that during transition from communism to capitalism economic relations tended to disembed from social relations, but this relationship remained significant; friendship ties were conductive to an individual upward mobility, economic well-being and entrepreneurial activity. In contrast to Polanyi’s argument, however, entrepreneurship-the most marketable area of individual advancement-is found to exhibit the highest degree of social–economic embeddedness. These results do not directly support either Polanyi’s or Granovetter’s arguments, however they do accord with a neo-Polanyian argument, as advanced in this paper.

    The phenomenon of employee turnover intention is a significant issue at work; however, Malaysia is equally suffering a similar problem. Empirical evidence has shown that employee turnover is more popular among public sector employees (academicians). Turnover-related studies are typically undertaken on nurses rather than in the academic field. Even though various studies involved academics, their studies mostly highlighted the relationship with job satisfaction. In this context, the moderation effect of personality dimensions between job embeddedness and turnover intention will help address employee turnover problems. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between job embeddedness (fit, links and sacrifice) and procedural justice with the turnover intention among academic staff in Malaysia’s public universities. This study also examined whether personality moderated job embeddedness and turnover intention. A total of 734 data were collected from a sample of academic staff in five public research universities. This study found that the dimensions of the sacrifice of the job embeddedness were significantly negatively related to the turnover intention. It was also found that personality does not moderate the relationship between job embeddedness and turnover intention. The results also showed that procedural justice was negatively related to turnover intention among academic staff. The implications of the theory and practice and suggestions lead to future discussion.
    Zjawisko intencji rotacji pracowników jest istotnym problemem w pracy; jednak Malezja boryka się z podobnym problemem. Dowody empiryczne wykazały, że rotacja pracowników jest bardziej popularna wśród pracowników sektora publicznego (akademików). Badania związane z obrotem są zwykle podejmowane na pielęgniarkach, a nie na polu akademickim. Chociaż różne badania obejmowały naukowców, ich badania w większości podkreślały związek z satysfakcją z pracy. W tym kontekście efekt moderacji wymiarów osobowości między zakorzenieniem w miejscu pracy a intencją rotacji pomoże rozwiązać problemy związane z rotacją pracowników. Celem tego badania jest zbadanie związku między zakorzenieniem w miejscu pracy (dopasowanie, powiązania i poświęcenie) a sprawiedliwością proceduralną z intencją rotacji wśród kadry akademickiej na publicznych uniwersytetach w Malezji. Badanie to sprawdzało również, czy osobowość moderowała zakorzenienie w pracy i intencję rotacji. W sumie zebrano 734 dane od próby kadry akademickiej z pięciu publicznych uniwersytetów badawczych. Badanie to wykazało, że wymiary poświęcenia zakorzenienia w miejscu pracy były istotnie negatywnie związane z intencją rotacji. Stwierdzono również, że osobowość nie moderuje związku między zakorzenieniem w pracy a intencją rotacji. Wyniki pokazały również, że sprawiedliwość proceduralna była negatywnie powiązana z intencją rotacji wśród nauczycieli akademickich. Implikacje teorii i praktyki oraz sugestie prowadzą do przyszłej dyskusji.

    The purpose of the work is to identify the ways and scope of territorialization processes of human capital as well as to analyze its perception and values in economic processes. Theoretical research begins with the identification of human resources as a production factor that is reevaluated and reinterpreted towards the concept of human capital. Human capital is not initially associated with the place and space, especially in the initial period of globalization of the late twentieth century. However, also under the global trends it is getting territorialised, which is raising the role of territory in economic processes both in the local, as well as in global scale. At the same time, the nature of innovative processes also changes, from a linear model to open innovation systems. These systems are also determined by the properties of the territory. Thus, two important features of human capital are revealed through evolution, subject to embeddedness and concentration processes. Human capital is an important element of territorial capital that determines the existence and attractiveness of innovative entrepreneurial milieu. The role of the spatial proximity of the institutional environment is invaluable in his investment process.
    Celem pracy jest identyfikacja sposobów i zakresu procesów terytorializacji kapitału ludzkiego a także analiza jego percepcji oraz wartości w procesach ekonomicznych. Badania teoretyczne zaczynają się od identyfikacji zasobów ludzkich jako czynnika produkcji, który ulega przewartościowaniu i reinterpretacji w kierunku pojęcia kapitał ludzki. Kapitał ten początkowo ma charakter aprzestrzenny, zwłaszcza w początkowym okresie procesów globalizacji końca XX wieku. Jednak, również pod wpływem globalnych trendów ulega on procesom terytorializacji, co podnosi rolę terytorium w procesach ekonomicznych zarówno w skali lokalnej, jak i globalnej. Zjawiskom tym towarzyszą zmiany charakteru procesów innowacyjnych, od modelu linearnego do systemów otwartej innowacji. Systemy te także zdeterminowane są właściwościami terytorium. W drodze ewolucji ujawniają się zatem dwie ważne cechy kapitału ludzkiego, podlega procesom zakorzeniania i koncentracji. Jest ważnym elementem kapitału terytorialnego decydującym o istnieniu i atrakcyjności innowacyjnych środowisk przedsiębiorczości. W jego procesie inwestycyjnym nie do przecenienia pozostaje zatem rola bliskości przestrzennej otoczenia instytucjonalnego.

    W pierwszej części artykułu zostały przedstawione trzy koncepcje teoretyczne ukazujące wpływ dużych przedsiębiorstw na rozwój regionalny: efektów mnożnikowych, zakorzenienia oraz społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu. W drugiej części analizie przestrzennej i pod względem rodzaju działalności zostały poddane największe przedsiębiorstwa w województwie wielkopolskim. Podmioty wyznaczono pod kątem przychodów ze sprzedaży na podstawie ogólnopolskiego rankingu „Lista 500” „Polityki”. W końcowej części artykułu opisany został wpływ największych przedsiębiorstw na rozwój województwa wielkopolskiego na przykładzie Volkswagena Poznań.
    The issue of the impact of strategic investors, particularly foreign, on regional and local development, in the last few years has become an important subject of studies in economic geography and spatial management. However, it is not easy to assess plainly the results of localization of large companies: the data are difficult to get and interpret. The aim of the article is to: 1) shortly explain three concepts explaining impact of large companies on regional development: multiplier effects, embeddedness and corporate social responsibility (CSR), 2) analyze in a spatial and branch context the largest companies (in terms of sales’ revenues) in Wielkopolska voivodeship in 2011 (the list is based on the ranking “Lista 500” “Polityki”), 3) describe an example of impact of large company – Volkswagen Poznań on regional development. The analysis showed that among the 50 largest companies in Wielkopolska voivodeship the most represent food industry (11) and retail and automotive sector (8 each). The research proved that the largest companies concentrate in the center of the region – in Poznan agglomeration, where 28 out of 50 largest enterprises (56%) are located. It was observed that 22 of the investigated enterprises were awarded for declaring activities in the field of corporate social responsibility, which comprises various actions aimed at improving local community life. The empirical example of Volkswagen demonstrated ways in which large company can contribute to the regional development.

    The article presents immigrant entrepreneurship as a field of research. In the first section, the main concepts related to immigrant entrepreneurship are recounted. It is followed by an analysis of factors that give grounds for regarding immigrant entrepreneurship as a separate field of research. Several important trends and tendencies in immigrant entrepreneurship research are also outlined. The last section is devoted to a discussion on potential challenges faced by researchers.
    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie przedsiębiorczości imigrantów jako obszaru badań, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jego kulturowego kontekstu. Tekst rozpoczyna prezentacja podstawowych pojęć związanych z przedsiębiorczością imigrantów. Wskazane zostały elementy specyfiki, które powodują, że przedsiębiorczość imigrantów może być traktowana jako odrębny obszar badawczy. W opracowaniu wskazano także wybrane trendy w badaniach i wyzwania stojące obecnie przed badaczami przedsiębiorczości imigrantów.

    Unter vielen Aspekten scheint sich die Rechtsübersetzung besonders gut zur Anwendung der Prinzipien der funktionalistischen Translationsansätze, besonders der Skopos-Theorie von J.H. Vermeer, zu eignen. Jedenfalls könnte sich eine konsequente Durchsetzung des Prinzips der kulturellen Einbettung als unangebracht, sogar als irreführend erweisen, da sie zu Störungen in der durch die Translationshandlung stattfindenden Rechtskommunikation führen kann. In einigen Rechtsgeschäften, wie z.B. in Verträgen, an denen Vertragsparteien aus verschiedenen Staaten beteiligt sind, wird nur ein Rechtssystem als Kommunikationsrahmen definiert (das sog. maßgebende bzw. anwendbare Recht). In solchen Fällen kann man das Prinzip der kulturellen Einbettung nur mit Bezug auf die linguistischen Aspekte des Textes anwenden, in weiterem Ausmaß, d.h. was die Kultur- bzw. Rechtsgrundlage des Textes betrifft, haben aber der Ausgangs- und der Zieltext den selben Referenzrahmen.
    Tłumaczenie prawne w wielu aspektach wydaje się być odpowiednim polem dla zastosowania zasad funkcjonalistycznego podejścia do przekładu, szczególnie zasad teorii skoposu J.H. Vermeera. Mimo to, można także zastanowić się, na ile do tych tekstów odnieść można ujęcie kulturowe, oraz w jakim stopniu może ono wpłynąć (pozytywnie czy negatywnie) na przekład komunikacji prawnej. W niektórych transakcjach prawnych, takich jak umowy międzynarodowe czy tam, gdzie w grę wchodzą podmioty zagraniczne jako strony, tylko jeden system prawny stanowi obudowę komunikacyjną. W takiej sytuacji należy z ostrożnością uwzględniać właściwe założenia podejścia kulturowego tak, by teksty wejściowy i wyjściowy posiadały taką samą ramę referencyjną. 
    In many aspects, legal translation seems to be an adequate domain for applying the principles of the functionalist approaches to translation, especially the skopos-theory by J. H. Vermeer. Nevertheless, an indiscriminate application of the principle of cultural embeddedness could prove questionable, if not misleading, as it may cause disturbance in the legal communication occurring through the translation act. In some legal transactions, such as e.g. international contracts, involving contracting parties belonging to different nations, only one legal system is adopted as the communication framework (i.e. the governing or applicable law). In such cases, the functionalist principle of cultural embeddedness needs to be applied selectively, i.e. only with respect to some linguistic features of the text, while in a broader sense, as far as the cultural and/or legal foundations of the text are concerned, the source and the target text will have the same reference frame.

    Zagraniczne spółki zależne (filie zagraniczne) angażują się w dwa rodzaje współpracy: współpracę wewnętrzną (korporacyjną: z firmą matką oraz innymi filiami córkami) i współpracę zewnętrzną (międzyorganizacyjną). Opierając się na koncepcji „dualnego zakorzenienia”, niniejszy artykuł proponuje model wyjaśniający rolę relacji wewnętrznych i zewnętrznych w budowaniu przewagi konkurencyjnej wynikającej z innowacji. W opracowaniu opisano wyniki analizy ścieżek, wykonanej przy wykorzystaniu danych z kwestionariusza Community Innovation Survey 2010–2012 na próbie przedsiębiorstw – członków grup kapitałowych z 10 państw UE, w większości krajów Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Wyniki pokazują pozytywny wpływ podwójnego zakorzenienia na innowacyjność filii zagranicznych, prowadzącego do budowania przewagi konkurencyjnej opartej zarówno na kosztach, jak również wyróżnianiu się. Wiedza pozyskiwana z zewnątrz jest mediatorem związku między relacjami wewnątrz korporacji a budowaną przewagą konkurencyjną. Relacje zewnętrzne i wewnętrzne nie wykluczają się nawzajem, wręcz przeciwnie – jeśli występują jednocześnie, wzmacnia to ich wpływ na innowacyjność. Integracja wewnętrzna odgrywa decydującą rolę w budowaniu przewagi konkurencyjnej wynikającej z innowacji nakierowanej na obniżanie kosztów, podczas gdy relacje zewnętrzne mają większy wpływ na przewagę konkurencyjną wynikającą z różnicowania. Kierownictwo przedsiębiorstw powinno więc promować oba typy relacji, uwzględniając ich odrębne role w procesie budowania przewagi konkurencyjnej.
    The foreign subsidiaries of multinational enterprises are involved in two types of networks: an internal (corporate) network within the company including the headquarters and sister subsidiaries, and an external (inter-organizational) network of cooperating partners. Based on the concept of “dual embeddedness,” this paper proposes a model explaining the role of internal and external relationships in developing innovation-related competitive advantages. A path analysis was conducted based on data from the Community Innovation Survey’s 2010–2012 sample of enterprises – members of capital groups from 10 EU member states, mostly CEE (post-transition countries). The results show the positive influence of dual embeddedness on subsidiaries’ innovation, leading to competitive advantages based on cost and on differentiation. A mediating role for external knowledge in the link of internal integration and competitive advantage is posited. External and internal relationships are not mutually exclusive; on the contrary, together they reinforce each other’s impact on innovation performance. Internal integration plays a decisive role in building innovation-related competitive advantages based on cost, whereas external relationships have stronger influence on differentiation-based advantages. Therefore, the management of such firms should promote both types of relationships, considering their distinct roles in the process of building competitive advantages.

    Nurses' turnover has been a major concern globally, which is strongly influenced by nurses' intent to leave. However, only a few large sample studies on the predictive factors associated with nurses’ turnover intention were conducted in Bali Province, which is currently promoting health tourism. This study analyses the effect of Person Organization Fit and Person Job Fit on Nurse Turnover Intention mediated by job satisfaction and moderated by Job Embeddedness. The study was conducted at a private hospital involving 311 employees as a sample. The data were collected utilising a questionnaire through the distribution of questionnaires; then, the data was analysed using Logistic Regression. The results show that PO-Fit, PJ-Fit, job embeddedness and job satisfaction have an essential impact on reducing turnover intention. PO-Fit and PJ-Fit may increase job satisfaction. However, job satisfaction and job embeddedness do not mediate the effect of PO-Fit and PJ-Fit towards intention. This study contributes to developing an integrated model to reduce turnover intention. This study enriches the literature on turnover intention and related variables to be considered for decision-making in the healthcare industry, especially in hospitals.
    Rotacja pielęgniarek jest głównym problemem na całym świecie, na który silny wpływ ma zamiar odejścia pielęgniarek. Jednak w prowincji Bali przeprowadzono tylko kilka dużych badań próbnych dotyczących czynników predykcyjnych związanych z intencjami związanymi z rotacją pielęgniarek, które obecnie promują turystykę zdrowotną. Niniejsze badanie analizuje wpływ dopasowania organizacji osoby i dopasowania osoby do stanowiska na intencję rotacji pielęgniarek za pośrednictwem satysfakcji z pracy i moderowanej przez zakorzenienie w pracy. Badanie przeprowadzono w prywatnym szpitalu na próbie 311 pracowników. Dane zostały zebrane za pomocą kwestionariusza poprzez dystrybucję kwestionariuszy; następnie dane analizowano za pomocą regresji logistycznej. Wyniki pokazują, że PO-Fit, PJ-Fit, zakorzenienie w pracy i satysfakcja z pracy mają istotny wpływ na zmniejszenie zamiaru rotacji. PO-Fit i PJ-Fit mogą zwiększyć satysfakcję z pracy. Jednak satysfakcja z pracy i zakorzenienie w pracy nie mediują wpływu PO-Fit i PJ-Fit na intencję. Badanie to przyczynia się do opracowania zintegrowanego modelu w celu zmniejszenia zamiaru rotacji. Niniejsze badanie wzbogaca literaturę dotyczącą zamiaru obrotu i powiązanych zmiennych, które należy wziąć pod uwagę przy podejmowaniu decyzji w branży opieki zdrowotnej, zwłaszcza w szpitalach.

    Opis:
    Artykuł ma charakter koncepcyjny. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie istoty osadzenia sieciowego projektów międzyorganizacyjnych jako głównej determinanty ryzyka w projekcie. Wskazano na specyfikę ryzyka współpracy międzyorganizacyjnej, którego głównym źródłem jest niepewność zachowań partnera. Za najbardziej efektywną metodę zarządzania ryzykiem relacyjnym uznano kontrolę społeczną. W artykule wykazano, że znaczenie kontroli społecznej w projektach międzyorganizacyjnych jest zdeterminowane wzorcem i poziomem osadzenia sieciowego, zwłaszcza osadzenia strukturalnego wpływającego na rozwój makrokultury, ułatwiającej koordynację projektów i zastępującej wzajemne zaufanie uczestników projektu rozwijane w bezpośredniej współpracy. W artykule przedstawiono typologię projektów międzyorganizacyjnych wskazującą na prawdopodobny charakter i poziom osadzenia społecznego.
    The article is of the conceptual nature. The aim of this article is to present the essence of network embeddedness of inter-organisational projects as a major determinant of risk in the project. The nature of the risk in inter-organisational cooperation, which main source is behaviour uncertainty of the partner, was pointed out. The social control was considered as the most effective method of relational risk management. The article indicates that the importance of social control in the inter-organisational projects is determined by the pattern and the level of the network embeddedness, especially the structural embeddedness forming a macroculture facilitating project coordination and replacing mutual trust between project participants developed in their direct cooperation. The article presents a typology of inter-organisational projects indicating the likely nature and level of social embeddedness.
    Статья имеет концептуальный характер. Цель статьи – представить суть сетевого закрепления позиций межорганизационных проектов в качестве основного детерминанта риска в проекте. Указали специфику межорганиза- ционного сотрудничества, основным источником которого является неуве- ренность в поведении партнера. Самым эффективным методом управления реляционным риском считают общественный контроль. В статье доказали, что значение общественного контроля в межорганизационных проектах опре- деляется образцом и уровнем сетевого закрепления позиций, в особенности стуктурного их закрепления, влияющего на развитие макрокультуры, облег- чающей координацию проектов и замещающей взаимное доверие участников проекта, развиваемое в непосредственном сотрудничестве. В статье предста- вили типологию межорганизационных проектов, указывающую вероятный характер и уровень общественного закрепления позиций.
