Opis:
Catalytic reforming is an important intermediate in the processing of crude (naphtha in particular) to obtain gasoline. The catalyst used in the process (platinum) is quite expensive and may negatively impact the business if not used judiciously. The aforesaid not only refers to the reduction in loss of the catalyst per unit of gasoline produced but also to the manufacturing of an environmentally friendlier product alongside which is the need of the planet and also a necessity to meet the increasingly strict government norms. In order to meet the above requirements, various refineries around the world use various well-known conventional methods which depend on the quality and quantity of crude manufactured by them. This paper focuses on highlighting recent advancements in methods of catalytic regeneration (CR) in the reforming unit of petroleum industries to produce high octane gasoline, without any major replacements in their existing setup. Research papers formulated by the application of methodologies involving non-linear models and real-time refinery data have only been considered to avoid any deviations/errors in practical applications. In-depth analysis of these papers has led to the origin of some ideas which have been included as suggestions and can be considered as subjects of further research. In all, the objective of the paper is to serve as a reference for researchers and engineers working on devising optimum methods to improve the regeneration of reforming catalysts.

This paper discusses acoustic and lasers based bathymetric systems in terms of their applicability in diverse circumstances. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are compared in terms of capabilities, cost and accuracy. None of these systems can provide full bottom coverage in all circumstances but could be supplementary to each other. Information has been presented in support of this conclusion. Acoustic bathymetry is suitable at deeper waters whereas laser bathymetry may be used in shallow clear coastal waters. A hybrid option has been suggested with the mix of these systems for higher survey efficiency and lesser costs. This paper is of interest to persons involved in ocean acoustics study and survey projects planners as well as to the developers of laser instruments for study ocean water and bottom properties and object detection such as wracks, boulders and other objects.

The static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is the multipurpose FACTS device with the multiple input and multiple output system for the enhancement of its dynamic performance in power system. Based on artificial intelligence (AI) optimization technique, a novel controller is proposed for CSC based STATCOM. In this paper, the CSC based STATCOM is controlled by the LQR. But the best constant values for LQR controller's parameters are obtained laboriously through trial and error method, although time consuming. So the goal of this paper is to investigate the ability of AI techniques such as genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) methods to search the best values of LQR controller's parameters in a very short time with the desired criterion for the test system. Performances of the GA, PSO & ABC based LQR controllers are also compared. Applicability of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through simulation in MATLAB and the simulation results are shown an improvement in the input-output response of CSC-STATCOM.

Opis:
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) has been used since last over two decades as a measure of performance in manufacturing industries. Unfortunately, enough, application of OEE in mining and excavation industry has not been duly adopted. In this paper an effort has been made to identify the OEE for performance evaluation of Bucket based Excavating, Loading and Transport (BELT) equipment. The conceptual model of OEE, as used in the manufacturing industries, has been revised to adapt to the BELT equipment. The revised and adapted model considered the operational time, speed and bucket capacity utilization losses as the key OEE components for evaluating the performance of BELT equipment. To illustrate the efficacy of the devised model on real-time basis, a case study was undertaken on the biggest single bucket excavating equipment – the dragline, in a large surface coal mine. One-year data was collected in order to evaluate the proposed OEE model.
Model koncepcyjny podejścia całościowej oceny stosowany dotychczas w przemyśle wytwórczym został zaadaptowany by uwzględniać specyfikę systemów urabiania, ładowania i transportu. Odpowiednio zmodyfikowany model uwzględnia czas pracy układu, tempo pracy, spadek ładowności koparki i spowodowane w ten sposób straty, umożliwiając dokonanie całościowej oceny wydajności pracy systemu. Poprawność opracowanego modelu działającego w czasie rzeczywistym zbadano na przykładzie systemu do urabiania, załadunku i transportu wykorzystywanego w dużej kopalni odkrywkowej węgla. Do oceny poprawności modelu wykorzystano zebrane dane obejmujące cały rok pracy urządzeń.

Over the years laser welding has evolved as a fabrication process capable of overcoming the limitations of conventional joining methodologies. It facilitates the welding of diverse range of materials like metals, non-metals, polymers etc. Laser transmission welding is a technique employed for fabricating intricate shapes/contours in polymers with better precision compared to the other conventional processes. Nylon6, a synthetic semi-crystalline polymer is utilized as an engineering thermoplastic due to its high strength and temperature resistant properties. In the earlier researches, various welding techniques were employed for the fabrication of polymers and metals keeping the laser beam stagnant, and much emphasis was given only to temperature distribution along the different axes and limited attention was given to residual stress analysis. Therefore, in this research work, a three-dimensional time-dependent model using a moving laser beam is used to fabricate unreinforced Nylon6 specimens.

Opis:
Biometrics is the science of human recognition by means of their biological, chemical or behavioural traits. These systems are used in many real life applications simply from biometric based attendance system to providing security at a very sophisticated level. A biometric system deals with raw data captured using a sensor and feature template extracted from raw image. One of the challenges being faced by designers of these systems is to secure template data extracted from the biometric modalities of the user and protect the raw images. In order to minimize spoof attacks on biometric systems by unauthorised users one of the solutions is to use multi-biometric systems. Multi-modal biometric system works by using fusion technique to merge feature templates generated from different modalities of the human. In this work, a novel scheme is proposed to secure template during feature fusion level. The scheme is based on union operation of fuzzy relations of templates of modalities during fusion process of multimodal biometric systems. This approach serves dual purpose of feature fusion as well as transformation of templates into a single secured non invertible template. The proposed technique is irreversible, diverse and experimentally tested on a bimodal biometric system comprising of fingerprint and hand geometry. The given scheme results into significant improvement in the performance of the system with lower equal error rate and improvement in genuine acceptance rate.

Plant RNA interference has been a very well studied phenomenon since its discovery. We are well versed with the types of small noncoding RNAs that are prevalent in the plant systems and their pathways of biogenesis and subsequent actions. However, apart from model plant systems such as Arabidopsis and Oryza, very little information is available regarding the other members of the RNA interference machinery; specially Argonaute proteins which acts as the major stabilizing factor for execution of the interference. This work focuses on the exploration of the sequenced crop genomes available on the web using a hybrid approach of computational protein fishing and genome mining. The results indicate that this hybrid approach was successful in the identification of argonaute proteins in the crop genomes under study.

Opis:
RNA silencing is one of the important phenomenon in plant defense mechanism, it actively protect host plants against viral infections. Existing viruses must have developed counter defense strategies to survive this arms race. Such counter defense strategy is the viral silencing suppressor (VSRs) which have been reported to directly interfere with the various steps leading to the interference of viral RNAs. Most identified VSRs are multifunctional, besides being RNA-silencing suppressors, they often perform essential roles by functioning as coat proteins, helper components for viral transmission, replicases and movement proteins, proteases or transcriptional regulators. One such identified VSR is AC4 of Sri Lankan cassava mosaic virus strain. Trivial knowledge about the structure –function relationship of this VSR leads to this work, where we focus on the structure generation by modelling to identify the mode of interactions with the various effector molecules of the silencing pathways. Structural analyses have been performed to screen interacting residues. Results indicate conserved structural features which signify propensity of functional interactions and further shows that this VSR can be a potent tool for the analysis of RNA silencing mechanisms and the relationships between different silencing pathways and VSRs.

Purpose: Investigate the potential of vacuum dewatering process of on three different grades of concrete namely M20, M30 and M40 to evaluate its compressive strength. Design/methodology/approach: For this study a data set of 90 experimental observations obtained from laboratory testing with and without application of vacuum dewatering after designing and casting the concrete of said three grades. The standard cubes of size 150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm were obtained by core cutting and tested for compression after 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of proper curing. Accuracy of prediction of compressive strength of concrete by application of M5P, ANN and SVM as artificial intelligence techniques and their feasibility are assessed to estimate the compressive strength of the concrete enacted with vacuum dewatering technique. A total data set was segregated in two groups. A group of 63 observations was used for model development and smaller group of 27 observations was used for testing the models. Findings: Overall performance of ANN based developed model is better than M5P and SVM based models for predicting the compressive strength of concrete for this data set. Research limitations/implications: Investigated three different grades of concrete namely M20, M30 and M40 to evaluate its compressive strength. The experimental research involved only testing of cubes only. Practical implications: Using ANN based developed model makes it possible to quickly and accurately predict the compressive strength of concrete. Originality/value: The results of comparing three models for predicting the compressive strength of concrete and the optimal values of ANN based developed models are presented. Earlier no one has applied M5P, ANN and SVM modelling to predict the compressive strength of vacuum dewatered concrete.

Opis:
Background: The design of a remanufacturing system that recovers sold products for reprocessing is needed to meet Japan's environmental objectives. However, to establish closed-loop supply chains for sustainability, it is necessary to consider not only environmental factors but also economic efficiency. Selling remanufactured products at prices lower than new products, may expand market sizes and allow a firm to accrue higher profits. However, a cannibalization effect will occur in which consumers who would have purchased new products, instead purchase remanufactured products at lower prices. The purpose of this study is to design a manufacturing-remanufacturing system in consideration of the cannibalization effect. Furthermore, we evaluate the system including cycle of a product by using the use period of products. Methods: Based on a previous study, we develop a demand model with cannibalization effect using the Bass model. We deal with the demand affected by the different prices of products by introducing a demand function that increases as the price of products decreases. Moreover, by giving the use period of each product, we consider the case that the recovery period of each product is different. Results: In numerical examples, a manufacturing-remanufacturing system using the proposed model is evaluated. The numerical results clarify the influence of the price of remanufactured products, cannibalization rate, and introduction timing of remanufactured products on total profit and remanufacturing rate of our system. Conclusions: This manufacturing-remanufacturing system revealed the influence of cannibalization effect on total profit and the importance of price and the timing of introduction of remanufactured products. In addition, by using the use period of each product, fluctuation in the quantity of reusable products can also be taken into consideration. It is shown that it is necessary to sell remanufactured products according to product recovery.

Opis:
Root apex is an area of primary importance for an endodontist. When a tooth erupts in the oral cavity the apical foramen undergoes anatomical changes with age. Root development is completed and the root apex is closed three years after eruption of the tooth. Endodontic practice is influenced to a great extent by different stages of root development and the type of tissue present within the roots. Open apices pose a challenging problem for the success of root canal treatment because they favour the extravasation of the irrigating solution and/or sealer into periradicular tissues, thus jeopardizing apical healing. Regenerative endodontics (revascularization/pulpal regeneration) is a straightforward approach accomplished with currently available instruments and materials. A literature review suggests that Mineral Tri oxide Aggregate (MTA) is the most favourable and recommendable material for single-visit apexification, even in cases when regenerative endodontics cannot be performed. A plus point of MTA is its biocompatibility and hermetic apical seal with no micro-leakage. It should be considered as an effective alternate for treating immature teeth with necrotic pulps. Treatment of a tooth with open apex poses multiple challenges. However, it is not easy to decide which material should be used: Calcium hydroxide, Mineral Tri oxide Aggregate, Biodentine, Platlet Rich Fibrin (PRF), or White Portland Cement (WPC). The choice of treatment regimen depends on several factors, e.g. individual cases, experience of the operator, familiarity with handling various materials, and patient’s availability for follow-up appointments. This review highlights various challenges in the treatment of open apex, with emphasis on MTA compared with other materials.

Respiratory allergic diseases such as bronchial asthma, rhinitis, urticaria, atopic dermatitis have been steadily increasing all over the world, including India. Owing to its alarming trend, several aerobiological surveys have been undertaken in different parts of India to delineate the variety of pollen and spore load. In this review, we have reported the current state of aerobiological knowladge in India with particular reference to allergenic airborn pollen occurence in 2001–2015. Pollen have been found to contribute a significant proportion in the air and caused allergy symptoms in the local inhabitants. Aerobiological records, a questionnaire survey and hospitalization records have been employed for the analysis. Holoptelea integrifolia, Amaranthus spinosus in northern region, Sorghum vulgare, Pennisetum, Gynandropsis gynandra, Parthenium hysterophorus, Dolichandrone platycalyx in southern regions, and Parthenium hysterophorus from the western region; Cynodon dactylon, Cenchrus ciliaris in the central area; Acacia auriculiformis, Cleome gynandra, Catharanthus roseus, Phoenix sylvestris, Areca catechu, and Lantana camara in the eastern regions as potential aeroallergens in India. The statistical approach confirmed the correlation between hospitalization rate associated with allergy-related health troubles and the prevalent allergenic pollen in the air. The Poaceae group has been found to be dominant throughout India. Immuno-biochemical studies identified various protein with allergenic potential found in the pollen recorded. Epitope identification and homology of the major allergenic protein Cat r1 of Catharanthus sp and Par j 1 of Parietaria judaica have been found. Identification of allergenic pollen grains and the modern approach concerning cross-reactivity and epitope revelation of dominant airborne pollen have important clinical implications for the prevention, diagnosis and treatments of allergic diseases in India.
W regionach Indii północnych do alergenów pyłkowych należą Holoptelea integrifolia, Amaranthus spinosus, w regionach południowych Sorghum vulgare, Pennisetum, Gynandropsis gynandra, Parthenium hysterophorus, Dolichandrone platycalyx, w regionach zachodnich Parthenium hysterophorus, na obszarach centralnych Cynodon dactylon, Cenchrus ciliaris, a w regionach wschodnich Acacia auriculiformis, Cleome gynandra, Catharanthus roseus, Phoenix sylvestris, Areca catechu i Lantana camara.

Pteridophytes and more specifically ferns represent a large but threatened group of plants which often serve as important environmental markers for pollution. Reports regarding stress responses in ferns are rare, apart from a few studies involving the ecological distribution and molecular marker studies. This work isolates a glutathione peroxidase enzyme from an aquatic fern widely distributed in fresh and polluted water bodies adjacent to sources of environmental polluted sources. Further computational analyses were performed to study the structure of the protein encoded by the open reading frame. Results indicate the presence of a large number of binding pockets which serve as important binding sites in the interactions with the cognate ligands.

Catharanthus roseus G. Don. (CR) or periwinkle plants are widely grown/cultivated as garden plants in the tropics and subtropics. In spite of its predominantly entomophilous nature, CR pollen had been reported to be airborne and allergenic. The objective of this study was to discover the seasonal changes of CR pollen concentration in air, to determine its potential to cause respiratory allergy and to analyze its allergenic components. A 2-year aerobiological survey was conducted with a Burkard 7-day sampler in an agricultural farm in the suburban zone of Calcutta city where CR pollen was found to be almost perennial with 3.6-5.4% contribution to the aeropollen load. Skin prick test was conducted on 282 respiratory allergic individuals living within a 15 km radius of the study area. 29.8% of them were positive to CR pollen. Among them, 80.9% were directly involved in gardening. The whole pollen extract was subjected to gel fi ltration in a Sephacryl S-200 column. Among 5 eluted fractions, fraction I showed optimum IgE-reactivity in ELISA-inhibition. The fraction I shows 4 protein components in SDS-PAGE, within which 3 (40-66 kD molecular mass) were found to be IgE-reactive in immunoblotting using patient sera. It can be concluded that CR pollen can trigger IgEmediated respiratory allergy in the people living in close proximity.

In many practical situations fluids are normally blended with additives (viscosity index improvers, viscosity thickeners, viscosity thinners) due to which they show pseudoplastic and dilatant nature which can be modelled as cubic stress model (Rabinowitsch model). The cubic stress model for pseudoplastic fluids is adopted because Wada and Hayashi have shown that the theoretical results with this model are in good agreement with the experimental results. The present theoretical analysis is to investigate the pseudoplastic effect along with the effect of rotational inertia on the pressure distribution, frictional torque and fluid flow rate of externally pressurised flow in narrow clearance between two curvilinear surfaces of revolution. The expression for pressure has been derived using energy integral approach. To analyse and discuss the effects of pseudoplasticity and fluid inertia on the pressure distribution, fluid flow rate and frictional torque, the examples of externally pressurised flow in the clearance between parallel disks and concentric spherical surfaces have been considered.

Opis:
Reaction between the various species in slag and metal phase is usually mass transfer controlled. There have been continuous efforts to increase the reaction efficiency in slag-metal system, especially during decarburization of steel to produce the ultra low carbon steel (ULCS) in secondary steelmaking. It has been found that the surface reaction is a dominant factor in the final stage of decarburization. In the initial stage, the inner site reaction is major factor in the refining process. The mixing of bath affects the later reaction. However, the former reaction (surface reaction) is affected by the plume size area at the top of the metal surface. Therefore, a computational study has been made to understand the fluid dynamics of a new secondary steelmaking process called Revolutionary Degasser Activator (REDA) to study the bath mixing and plume area. REDA process has been considered as it is claimed that this process can reduce the carbon content in steel below 10ppm in a less time than the other existing processes such as RH and Tank degasser. This study shows that both bath mixing and plume area are increased in REDA process facilitating it to give the desired carbon content in less time. Qualitative comments are made on slag-metal reaction system based on this finding.
Ciągle dążono do zwiększenia wydajności reakcji w układzie metal-żużel, zwłaszcza podczas procesu odwęglania, przy produkcji stali o ultra niskiej zawartości węgla (ULCS) podczas obróbki pozapieciowej. W związku z tym dokonano obliczeń, w celu zrozumienia dynamiki płynów nowego procesu metalurgii pozapiecowej, nazwanego Rewolucyjny Aktywator Odgazowania (REDA), do badania mieszania kąpieli i obszaru mieszania.

Traditional safety and health system measurement procedures, practiced in various industries produce qualitative results with a degree of uncertainty. This paper presents a fuzzy-logic-based approach to developing a fuzzy model for assessing the safety and health status in the tea industry. For this, the overall safety and health status at a tea estate has been considered as a function of 4 inputs: occupational safety, occupational health, behavioral safety and competency. A set of fuzzy rules based on expert human judgment has been used to correlate different fuzzy inputs and output. Fuzzy set operations are used to calculate the safety and health status of the tea industry. Application of the developed model at a tea estate showed that the safety and health status belongs to the fuzzy class of good with a crisp value of 7.2.

Painkiller drugs or analgesics are potent pain reliever chemical agents, which are commonly used in pain therapy. Mathematical modeling by QSAR (quantitative structure activity relationship) methods are well known practices to determine predictive toxicity in biota. Now-adays, an easy screening of chemicals, QSAR can be done by using several recommended softwares. The present study was carried out by using software namely T.E.S.T. (Toxicity estimation software tool) for rat oral LD50 (median lethal dose) predictive toxicity for common painkiller drugs. These painkiller drugs were selected as 35 compounds and tabulated on the basis characteristics of one non-narcotic viz. acetaminophen, twenty non-steroidal anti-inflammatory such as bromofenac, diclofenac, diflunsial, etodolac, fenoprofen, flurbiprofen, ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, ketorolac, maclofenamate sodium, mefenamic acid, meloxicam, nabumetone, naproxen, oxaprozin, phenylbutazone, piroxicam, sulindac and tolmetin as well as fourteen narcotic viz. buprenorphine, butorphanol, codeine, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, levorphanol, meperidine, methadone, morphine, nalbuphine, oxycodone, pentazocine, dextropropoxyphene and tapentadol. The data were tabulated on experimental (bioassay) from ChemIDPlus and T.E.S.T. and predictive toxicity of 30 compounds out of 35 compounds by using T.E.S.T. The predictive data were found by T.E.S.T. that 20 and 10 compounds were very toxic and moderately toxic respectively but not extremely, super toxic and non-toxic in rat model after acute oral exposure. It is suggested to evaluate the predicted data further with other available recommended softwares with different test models like daphnia, fish etc. to know aquatic toxicity when these compounds may discharge into waterbodies.

Weakly permeable micro-tubes are employed in many applications involving heat and/or mass transfer. During these processes, either solute concentration builds up (mass transfer) or steep change in temperature (heat transfer) takes place near the permeable wall causing a change in the viscosity of the fluid. Results of the present work suggest that such change in viscosity leads to a considerable alteration in the flow behavior, and the commonly assumed parabolic velocity profile no longer exists. To solve the problem numerically, the equation of motion was simplified to represent permeation of incompressible, Newtonian fluid with changing viscosity through a micro-tube. Even after considerable simplification, the accuracy of the results was the same as that obtained by previously reported results for some specific cases using rigorous formulation. The algorithm developed in the present work is found to be numerically robust and simple so that it can be easily integrated with other simulations.

The problem of improving the voltage profile and reducing power loss in electrical networks must be solved in an optimal manner. This paper deals with comparative study of Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Differential Evolution (DE) based algorithm for the optimal allocation of multiple FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) devices in an interconnected power system for the economic operation as well as to enhance loadability of lines. Proper placement of FACTS devices like Static VAr Compensator (SVC), Thyristor Controlled Switched Capacitor (TCSC) and controlling reactive generations of the generators and transformer tap settings simultaneously improves the system performance greatly using the proposed approach. These GA & DE based methods are applied on standard IEEE 30 bus system. The system is reactively loaded starting from base to 200% of base load. FACTS devices are installed in the different locations of the power system and system performance is observed with and without FACTS devices. First, the locations, where the FACTS devices to be placed is determined by calculating active and reactive power flows in the lines. GA and DE based algorithm is then applied to find the amount of magnitudes of the FACTS devices. Finally the comparison between these two techniques for the placement of FACTS devices are presented.

The present study aims to detect morphological abnormalities in Zygnema sp. because this test species have high adaptive capacity in unfavourable environmental stress. This alga is inhabited at the suburban bank of river Ganga, West Bengal, India. The study was done at experimental sites, downstream at Khardah near sewage water mixing area was compared with upstream control site Kalyani as no sewage water discharge. External and internal abnormal morphology such as undulating or wavy and extra outgrowth on cell wall, sometimes bending inwardly and outwardly as external deformities while internal anomalies such as pigment loss, nucleus was in circular, rectangular, oval and amoeboid shapes, also vacuolated and trilobed, broom like chloroplasts and central part of the thallas dried in between two segments. It was observed that this test species was surviving and well adapted with above mentioned deformities. The present preliminary study with Zygnema sp. can be utilized for in situ and ex situ indicator species for riverine biomonitoring. Further research may be relevant to know both tolerant and sensitive algae species inhabited at the river Ganga bank alongwith biochemical and genetic parameters. The present work is suggesting that other inhabiting algae and this adaptive test species can be used for bioremediation of pollutants.

The chromosome numbers in Lychnis coronaria (n=12) and Silene vulgaris (n=24) are given for the first time from India, along with Gypsophilla ceratioides (n=15) from the Western Himalayas. The course of meiosis varies from normal to abnormal in different populations of Silene conoidea, S. edgeworthii, S. vulgaris, Stellaria media, S. monosperma and S. semivestita. The course of meiosis was abnormal in all studied populations of Lychnis coronaria. Abnormal microsporogenesis (cytomixis, chromosomal stickiness, unoriented bivalents, formation of laggards and bridges) led to reduced pollen fertility and differences in pollen grain size.

Background. Free radicals play a key role in the development of several pathological conditions. Therefore, antioxidants (AOs) are the first line of defense against free radical damage and are critical for maintaining optimum health and wellbeing. Objectives: To assess the perception of dental practitioners regarding use of antioxidants in oral health. Method. A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted among 296 dental practitioners in Tricity (Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, India). A self-structured close-ended questionnaire was used to assess the perception of dentists regarding the use of antioxidants in their patients. It consisted of 12 questions with dichotomous response and five point likert scale ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data, followed by the Chi-square test to check significant differences between the responses. Correlation between responses were analysed through the Spearman’s rank correlation. Statistical analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20 (Illinois, Chicago, USA). Results. A statistically significant difference was observed between genders, with females 181 (61%) having more knowledge than males 115 (39%) regarding the use of antioxidants in their clinical practice. It has been found that dental professionals in academics prescribes more antioxidants to their patients than the private practitioners. Postgraduates 76 (77.6%) had a higher level of knowledge than graduates 86 (43%). Conclusions. Knowledge about antioxidants should be highlighted in the health sciences curriculum. It is recommended to expand the use of antioxidants in oral health to bring down the burden of chronic diseases like periodontitis and catastrophic diseases like precancerous lesions and oral cancer.

Opis:
Our cytomorphological study of various populations of Elsholtzia ciliata (Lamiaceae) collected from high-altitude sites of Kashmir Himalaya revealed two euploid cytomorphotypes, diploid (n=8) and tetraploid (n=16), growing sympatrically but inhabiting two different habitats. This is the first report of tetraploid (4×) E. ciliata from the Indian subcontinent. We found the course of meiois to be normal in diploids, but tetraploid individuals showed chromosome and meiotic irregularities: cytomixis at early prophase I, stickiness at metaphase I, and chromosome bridges at anaphase I. In tetraploids, 23 of the 26 pollen mother cells observed at metaphase I showed 0–6 quadrivalents, suggesting that the tetraploid is a segmental allopolyploid. Microsporogenesis was also abnormal in tetraploids, showing the formation of triads. All these anomalies are conducive to lower reproductive potential (40.70%) in tetraploids than in diploids (90.50%). Significant morphological differences between the two cytotypes are presented.

Density (ρ), refractive index (n), ultrasonic velocity (u), and viscosity (η) were measured for the binary mixtures formed by butylamine with 1-butanol and tert-butanol at temperatures 293, 303, and 313 K over the entire composition range. Excess molar volume V$\text{}_{m}^{E}$, molar refraction deviation ΔR$\text{}_{m}$, deviation in ultrasonic velocity Δu, viscosity deviation Δη, and excess Gibb's free energy of activation for viscous flow ΔG$\text{}^{*E}$ were derived from the experimental data and the computed results were fitted to the Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. The values of V$\text{}_{m}^{E}$, ΔR$\text{}_{m}$, Δu, Δη, and ΔG$\text{}^{*E}$ were plotted against the mole fraction of butylamine. The observed positive and negative values of excess parameters for both the mixtures were explained on the basis of intermolecular interactions present in these mixtures. The higher negative values of V$\text{}_{m}^{E}$ and ΔR$\text{}_{m}$ and positive values of Δu, Δη, and ΔG$\text{}^{*E}$ for butylamine + 1-butanol mixture suggest that specific interactions are taking place in butylamine + 1-butanol mixture, while weak dipole-dipole induced forces and dispersive forces seem to be responsible for butylamine + tert-butanol mixture. Furthermore, different empirical relations were used to correlate the binary refractive indices. An excellent agreement was found between experimental and theoretical values.

The present study deals with biomonitoring to know mollusc species as an indicator. In the present study, presence, absence and abundance of particular gastropod and bivalve species were identified in the different banks of river Ganga. The study was carried out at two experimental sites, Sodepur (Exp-1) and Khardah (Exp-2), West Bengal, India as the area exhibits a major sewage water outfall in the river compared with upstream control site, Kalyani (Cont-1) and downstream control site, Batanagar (Cont-1). The present biomonitoring shows qualitatively and quantitatively that in experimental no mollusc species were observed near the wastewater discharge area into the bank of river Ganga at Khardah while both sites of the sewage discharge area into the bank of river Ganga at Sodepur particular gastropod Bellamya sp. were observed when compared to control area. The highest variety and total nos of gastropods and bivalves (280 nos) were recorded in the upstream at Kalyani and lowest variety and total nos of only gastropods (150 nos) were recorded in the downstream at Batanagar. The present biomonitoring work was a preliminary observation to know sensitive and tolerant or accumulator mollusc species in the bank of river Ganga from a stretch of Kalyani (upstream) to Batanagar (downstream) in between urban wastewater discharge area (Sodepur and Khardah). Further researches must be relevant in relation to biomarker assessment with the physico-chemical factors and stress tolerant detoxification mechanism of particular mollusc species.

The propagation of plane waves in a rotating homogeneous, isotropic, thermoelastic solid with double porosity following Lord-Shulman’s theory of thermoelasticity has been investigated. It is assumed that the medium rotates about an axis normal to the surface with a uniform angular velocity. There may exist five coupled waves that evolved due to the longitudinal, transverse disturbance, voids of type-I and type-II, and temperature change in the medium. The secular equation for the model under consideration has been derived with the help of formal solutions and boundary conditions. The amplitude of displacements, temperature change and volume fraction fields for voids of type-I and type-II have also been computed analytically. Finally, numerical computations have been carried out for magnesium crystal material to understand the behavior of amplitude of phase velocity, penetration depth, specific loss, displacement components, temperature change, and volume fraction field due to type-I and type-II voids corresponding to the different rotation rates. Various graphs have been plotted to support the analytical findings. The study may be used in the development of rotation sensors, material design and thermal efficiency.

The refractive indices, densities and ultrasonic velocities of binary liquid mixtures of tetrahydrofuran (THF) with methanol and o-cresol over the entire composition range have been measured at 293, 303 and 313 K. Refractive index, density and ultrasonic velocity data have been used to evaluate the molar refraction deviation $ΔR_{m}$, deviation in ultrasonic velocity Δu, excess internal pressure $π_{i}^{E}$, excess molar enthalpy $H_{m}^{E}$ and excess free volume $V_{f}^{E}$. The computed results of $ΔR_{m}$, Δu, $π_{i}^{E}$, $H_{m}^{E}$ and $V_{f}^{E}$ were fitted to the Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. These results suggest that specific strong interactions are taking place in THF + o-cresol mixture while dispersive forces seem to be responsible for behaviour of THF + methanol mixture. Further, experimental refractive index and density data of these mixtures were also used to test the validity of the empirical/semi-empirical relations and models for refractive index and density, respectively.

It is shown that annealing under stress of FINEMET-type metallic glass ribbon (FeCuNbSiB) induces magnetic anisotropy of an easy-plane type (cross-section of the ribbon). This conclusion has been drawn analyzing experimental results obtained by means of Kerr-effect (domain structure) and Mössbauer spectroscopy operating in the so-called "magic angle" configuration which allows us to calculate all three spatial components of magnetization. Additionally, it is also shown that no crystallographic texture is created in the sample after stress-annealing, the feature which would have been an origin of the observed anisotropy.

Specific heat ratio (γ), pseudo-Grüneisen parameter (Γ), heat capacity $(C_p)$ and effective Debye temperature $(θ_{D})$ for binary system of tetrahydrofuran with o-cresol and methanol respectively, were calculated using the experimentally measured densities, velocities and viscosities of the pure liquids and their mixtures over the whole composition range and at T = 293, 303, 313 K. The excess pseudo-Grüneisen parameter $(Γ ^{E})$, excess molar isentropic compressibility $(K_{s}^{E})$ and excess acoustic impedance $(Z^{E})$ were also calculated. The excess deviation functions have been correlated using Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. The observed values of the excess parameters plotted against the mole fraction of tetrahydrofuran have been explained on the basis of intermolecular interaction suggesting strong interaction in tetrahydrofuran + o-cresol than in tetrahydrofuran + methanol. Partial molar isentropic compressibility at infinite dilution and their excess values were calculated for each component. Sanchez theory, Goldsach-Sarvas volume fraction statistics, Sudgen's relation, Flory-Patterson-Rastogi and Brock and Bird model were used with the Aurebach relation to compute theoretically the values of ultrasonic velocities at varying temperatures. The velocity deviations were estimated in terms of average percentage deviations. Internal pressure for both the systems were calculated theoretically and discussed on the basis of relative applicability of the models in theoretical estimations. The isothermal compressibility $(k_T)$, for these binary mixtures were theoretically evaluated by using the Flory statistical theory and five hard sphere models and compared with the experimental values.

The present study addresses the utilization of induction furnace steel slag which is an anthropogenic waste, for enhancing the mechanical properties of a commercial aluminium alloy A356. Different weight percentage (3wt%, 6wt%, 9wt%, and 12wt%) of steel slag particles in 1 to 10 μm size range were used as reinforcing particles in aluminium alloy A356 matrix. The composites were prepared through stir casting technique. The results revealed an improvement in mechanical properties (i.e. microhardness and tensile strength) and wear resistance with an increase in weight percentage of the steel slag particles. This research work shows promising results for the utilization of the steel slag for enhancing the properties of aluminium alloy A356 at no additional cost while assisting at same time in alleviating land pollution.

A Kelvin-Voigt model consisting of a spring and a dashpot in parallel was applied for the viscoelastic characterization of solid rocket propellants. Suitable values of spring constants and damping coefficients were employed by a least squares fit of the errors to generate creep curves using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) for composite solid propellants. Three different composite propellant formulations based on HTPB/AP/Al having burning rates of 5 mm/s, 15 mm/s and 20 mm/s were tested under different stress levels varying from 0.1 MPa to 3 MPa and at different temperatures varying from 35 °C to 85 °C. Creep behavior with recovery was studied and analyzed to evaluate the viscoelastic properties. The change in spring constants, representing elastic deformation, was very small compared to the damping coefficients for the propellants studied. For a typical propellant formulation, when the stress level was increased, the spring and damping coefficient both increased significantly whereas for an increase in temperature, they remained nearly constant. However, the ratio E/η was observed to be constant and independent of stress level. It was also observed that the variation of E and η varied linearly with increase in stress whereas their ratio showed a logarithmic variation. A mathematical correlation was developed to evaluate the viscoelastic properties during creep of composite propellants.

Omicron, the new ‘Variant of Concern’ of SARS-CoV-2, is rapidly evolving into new sub-variants or sub-lineages (BA.1, BA.2 etc.). These sub-variants have higher transmissibility, decreased vaccine effectiveness and increased risk of reinfection. As a result, many nations across the globe are reporting surge in infections which is a matter of concern. Understanding Omicron and its sub-variants is vital for development of public health policy and preventing disease transmission. The present paper throws a spotlight on the newly detected sub-variants of Omicron as reported in ongoing researches which are available only in pre-print form and also the importance of a booster dose of the vaccine. Information regarding recent research on a new nasal vaccine formulation, which may be effective against the new variants, is also highlighted in the paper.

Oryza sativa Linn. (rice) and Corchorus capsularis Linn. (jute) are the two major crops of the Bengal basin. Both rice and jute are generally grown in submerged flooded conditions, where arsenic bioavailability is high in soil. The consumers of the edible parts from both plants therefore face an inevitable source of exposure to arsenic, with consequent accumulation and toxicity. The objective of the study was to observe the in-vivo temporal variation of arsenic bioaccumulation in the different parts of O. sativa and C. capsularis. Rice plant specimens (Aman rice, Ratna variety) of different age groups (1, 2 and 3 months old) were analyzed in HG-AAS for absorbed arsenic content in different parts. The accumulation of arsenic remained significantly high in the initial phase of growth, but decreased with time. Amount of arsenic bioaccumulation followed the decreasing order: root > basal stem > median stem > apical stem > leaves > grains in all the three age groups of the rice plant samples. C. capsularis followed a trend of arsenic bioaccumulation similar to O. sativa. O. sativa had more accumulation potential than C. capsularis, but C. capsularis showed much higher efficiency of arsenic translocation in the above ground parts. This is the first ever report of time-dependent decrease in arsenic bioaccumulation in O. sativa and C. capsularis. The contamination level can reach the grain part in significant amount and can cause health hazards in more severely arsenic affected areas. Intensive investigation on a complete food chain is urgently needed in the arsenic contaminated zones for further risk assessments.

This paper reports on a Butacene® based composite propellant with high burning rate. The effect of replacing HTPB with Butacene® on the physical, mechanical and ballistic properties, and sensitivity towards impact and friction, has been studied. The ballistic properties were evaluated as burning rates at various pressures (7-11 MPa), pressure exponents, ignition temperatures etc. As expected, a remarkable enhancement in burning rate at low pressures was observed with increasing percentage of Butacene®. Comparatively lower n-values were observed for compositions containing Butacene® than for HTPB based propellants. The sensitivity of Butacene® based compositions, in terms of impact and friction, was found to be increased with an increasing percentage of Butacene®.

Analytical formulations for the outage probability (OP), symbol error rate (SER), and ergodic sum rate for the researched vehicle networks are established Rusing i.i.d. Nakagami-m fading links. Standard receivers, such as least square (LS) and minimum mean square error (MMSE), are outperformed by the stacked long-short term memory (S-LSTM) based DL-NOMA receiver. Under real time propagation circumstances, including the cyclic prefix (CP) and clipping distortion, the simulation curves compare the performance of MMSE and LS receivers with that of the DL-NOMA receiver. According to numerical statistics, NOMA outperforms conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) by roughly 20% and has a high sum rate when considering i.i.d. fading links.

Three different inversion approaches namely the look-up table, genetic algorithm, and artificial neural network were used and performances were evaluated. Application of the genetic algorithm for crop parameter retrieval is a new attempt among the variety of optimization problems in remote sensing which have been successfully demonstrated in the present study. Its performance was as good as that of the look-up table approach and the artificial neural network was a poor performer. The general order of estimation accuracy for para-meters irrespective of inversion approaches was leaf area index > canopy chlorophyll content > leaf chlorophyll content > equivalentleaf water thickness. Performance of inversion was comparable for broadband reflectances of all three sensors in the optical region with insignificant differences in estimation accuracy among them.

Opis:
In the present study, the effect of multiple part-through cracks on the vibration characteristics of thin isotropic rectangular plate is presented. The proposed analytical model is developed using Kirchhoff’s classical plate theory and the crack terms are formulated using the simplified Line Spring Model (LSM). The application of Berger's formulation helps to transform the derived governing equation in the form of well known Duffing equation with cubic nonlinearities and then the solution for final governing equation is obtained using Galerkin's method for two different boundary conditions. The fundamental frequency of the plate as affected by the number of cracks, cracks length, cracks orientation, and plate aspect ratio for different boundary condition is presented. It is found that the results obtained for natural frequencies are maximally affected by number of cracks, crack length and orientations.

Opis:
An integrated study based on calcareous nannofossils, organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts, and ammonites from the Washtawa and Kanthkot formations of the Wagad Uplift have allowed a detailed documentation of the stratigraphic position of these formations within the Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian sediments of the Kachchh Basin, western India. The nannofossil assemblages from the lower part of the Nara Shale Member exposed in the Nara and Washtawa domes, the Kanthkot Ammonite Beds along the Trambau River section, and the Patasar Shale Member exposed along the Trambau River section and the Patasar Tank section in the eastern part of the Wagad Uplift belong to the NJ 14 Cyclagelosphaera margerelli Zone of the Early Oxfordian, the NJ 15a Lotharingius sigillatus Zone of the Middle Oxfordian, and the NJ 15b Cretarhabdus conicus of Early Kimmeridgian age, respectively. Zonation schemes, based on calcareous nannofossils, dinoflagellate cysts, and ammonites were calibrated highlighting their biostratigraphic potential. These studies may represent a reference biochronology for Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian age strata applicable to the Tethyan realm of which India was a part during Late Jurassic times.

Opis:
Chitosan (CHT) is a natural compound that has been used to control postharvest pathogenic diseases due to its capability of eliciting natural defense responses in plants. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of foliar CHT application on yield and quality of the litchi fruit. Chitosan was applied by spraying on to fruit and foliage just after fruit set four times at 7-day intervals with four varying doses viz. 100, 250, 500, and 1,000 µg L−1 and a control (0 µg L−1). Although the application of CHT had no significant effect on the size of the fruits (length and width), the total contents of phenolics, flavonoids, and ascorbic acid and the antioxidant activity of litchi fruit arils were significantly increased in CHT-treated fruit compared with the untreated control. The highest phenolic, flavonoid, and ascorbic acid contents were 334 µg gallic acid g−1, 881 μg quercetin g−1, and 178 µg g−1, respectively, in fruits treated with 500 µg L−1 CHT. However, the highest antioxidant activity (622 μg butylated hydroxytoluene g−1) was recorded in 250 µg L−1 CHT-treated fruits. Our findings revealed that the application of low doses of CHT in a litchi orchard might improve fruit quality by increasing the content of antioxidants and antioxidant activities.
Najwyższe stężenia związków fenolowych, flawonoidów i kwasu askorbinowego, wynoszące odpowiednio: ekwiwalent 334 μg kwasu galusowego g−1 , ekwiwalent 881 μg kwercytyny g−1 i 178 μg g−1, stwierdzono w owocach traktowanych 500 μg L−1 CHT.

Opis:
Nowadays, in positron emission tomography (PET) systems, a time of fl ight (TOF) information is used to improve the image reconstruction process. In TOF-PET, fast detectors are able to measure the difference in the arrival time of the two gamma rays, with the precision enabling to shorten signifi cantly a range along the line-of-response (LOR) where the annihilation occurred. In the new concept, called J-PET scanner, gamma rays are detected in plastic scintillators. In a single strip of J-PET system, time values are obtained by probing signals in the amplitude domain. Owing to compressive sensing (CS) theory, information about the shape and amplitude of the signals is recovered. In this paper, we demonstrate that based on the acquired signals parameters, a better signal normalization may be provided in order to improve the TOF resolution. The procedure was tested using large sample of data registered by a dedicated detection setup enabling sampling of signals with 50-ps intervals. Experimental setup provided irradiation of a chosen position in the plastic scintillator strip with annihilation gamma quanta.
