This study deals with the current issues of social work mainly in the Czech and European contexts. It shows that the debate on social work crisis finds its roots of the crisis in social policy, and in structural, legislative and financial conditions it creates for social work. The study, therefore, suggests three questions that should be answered primarily by social work both as a practical profession and professional research, to be able to define its own professional interest.

Opis:
The object of social work are both the individuals and social groups (families or more extended communities). Depending on which groups of people require help, social work arouses various requirements which from the point of view of the social workers’ education create the need for specialisation. One can distinguish several specific groups of the clients of social work: children, the old age people (gerontological nursing), ill and disabled individuals and local communities. Special problems and challenges appear when a child is its object. It happens that because in the case of children separating interim help or long-term financial assistance from the pedagogic influence is impossible, and thus from responsibility for charges’ future. Social workers do not bear full responsibility for the state of child’s future, because they share this responsibility with different subjects, it does not mean, however, that they do not bear it at all. One can distinguish two extreme positions among the theoreticians of social work: according to one of them, represented among others by H. Radlińska, social welfare institutions totally take over the responsibility for the child’s future, what is connected with the limitation of freedom, and according to the latter, such a responsibility, in practice, is not possible.

Then – referring to the classification of selected authors – the basic functions of leisure time were characterized, including the perspective of social pedagogy (having a rest, playing, self-development). Next, the essence of social work was defined and its essential functions were listed. Finally, the attention was paid to leisure time as an important indicator of social participation and one of the key domains of social work. Here the concept of Pierre Bourdieu’s capital was referred to. In the final part of the study, the educational dimension of social work in the context of leisure time was pointed out.

Opis:
Global economic, cultural and ideological processes in society affect social work and the welfare regimes in developed countries. In their day-to-day work, social work professionals are confronted with the impact of unemployment, the widening income gap, social vulnerability and disadvantageous living conditions. In contemporary social work practice, there is a call for effective models of practice that promote practitioners’ autonomy and their abilities to give support that is more preventive, to their clients. This article reports on some developments in social pedagogy within the context of social work issues and offers insights on practical preventive social interventions. It identifies four bases for operating schemes in social pedagogy within social work practice: empowering strategies, an appreciation of clients’ cultural and ethnic preferences, responsive communication and promoting collaboration, along with cultivating alliances with significant actors around the client. The potential of these operating schemes as tools might be applied to varied preventive interventions. The article concludes that these bases within socio-pedagogical social work can extend the capacities of welfare services by changing the dominant discourses shaping many contemporary welfare service contexts, as well as by the workers themselves supporting their clients’ lifeworlds.

There is a growing academic tradition of employing strategies of reflective skills in social work education. Social professions are often dealing with the problems of vulnerability and complexity that exist when encountering clients’ needs. This article arises from the experiences of the author in providing reflective learning to health and social work students in Sweden. This study opens with evoking the concept of knowing and learning. It explores and discusses the epistemological basis of reflective learning to facilitate students’ knowledge creation, clinical reasoning and reflective learning in front-on planning interventions. Further, the study present an example of a reflection scheme matrix applied in the social work and social pedagogy bachelor educational programs at Malmö University to support student’s reflective learning and information gathering while planning social interventions for service receivers. During their reflective reasoning, students are supported in their process of reflection to gain control of the unsorted information and shape a base for their own internal experience while analysing the client’s situation. This article concludes with commentary about reflective learning potential including making sense of real professional situations, meaningful engagements and how to prepare students for professional operationalisation in complex, unpredictable situations.

Gerontological social work becomes more and more autonomous field of social work and its specificity is connected with the profile of service receivers. Elderly are the social group, who compared to other socially weak groups, have a higher level of capabilities – financial, personal, life-span, relations. They also have various needs and huge diversification inside of this age group. They are a very challenging group in the social care system because of tension between higher resources and increasing need of support. The aim of the article is to show how the gerontological social work can be described in the wide context of social work theory. There is also an attempt to define and to show the distinctness of gerontological social work as the tool of acting. The perspective of description is more theoretical than formal.

Poland, like many European countries, is moving away from a welfare state thus it is essential to focus on the effective use of social work, which aims to encourage individuals and groups to change their life situation. Social assistance clients with the support of social workers are taking action to permanently become independent and overcome the crisis. The process of promoting and strengthening the correct attitudes to life in social work, in addition to relevant laws and regulations, is determined by the relationship that is formed between the social worker and the client. Undoubtedly, the basis for effective and proper relationship is assistance in the essential process of interpersonal communication which includes feedback as significant part of it.

Social work deals with problems of individuals, families, organizations and communities. However, an evolving set of challenges continues to shape the future of social work theory, research and interventions. Social work is a profession with its own code and follows a set of standards and ethics rules at the federal level, but the licensing processes are controlled at the state level and the professional policies are set at the national and local level. Social workers, therefore, are trained to think in a systemic way and to work with a person-in-environment perspective at the individual and the community level. This text shows how the challenges of the twenty-first century impact the education of social workers as well as social work practice. The economy and globalization present a number of challenges – all of which contribute to creation of new social problems and need for social innovation. New technologies have opened the door for educational and clinical opportunities to connect and engage people in need, however, the digitalization excluded a group of people with a low income. Social work education must keep up with the pressures of the economic aspects influencing the education market and the growing evidence base to support trauma-informed care, the use of psychiatric rehabilitation, prevent bullying at schools and cyberspace, care for elderly and the constant changes ushered in by modernization and globalization. The implications of these challenges are reviewed and provide guidance for social work educators, social work students and social work practitioners.

Opis:
There has been a long-standing discussion in Poland about the efficient and effective functioning of the social welfare and integration system. The transformations it has been undergoing for years in connection with the possibilities of benefiting from the EU funds and as a results of its attempted reforms and rationalisation demonstrate that the issue of professionalising the social worker profession is actually of little interest to anybody, despite the fact that this is a regulated profession with quite a strong presence in the current scientific discourse. If performed in a professional manner, methodical social work is a very important tool which may significantly contribute to increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of social interventions, thereby improving the quality of the public sphere in this segment. In this context, an important role is played by evaluation, understood as analysing the value of a specific action – with reference to social projects and programmes. Of particular importance here is the latest generation evaluation, which makes use of action research, thereby increasing the chances to raise the level of social participation and simultaneously reduce the problem of social exclusion. On the other hand, it is necessary to note the crucial role that evaluation may play in reinforcing and sustaining the professional identity of social workers, especially in the face of the constant changes and reforms of the social welfare system.

This article aims to present social work as a practice protecting the rights of people suffering from the processes of marginalisation. It takes as its point of departure two models of advocacy structuring multiple types of activity in this field, ranging from work with particular individuals to political engagement at the macro level. The next part offers a discussion of the results of a quantitative study (CAWI and CATI interviews) conducted among social workers from local social welfare centres in the Wielkopolska region. In the light of analysis of the obtained data, the practice of advocacy in social work emerges as one focused on providing direct assistance in the form of financial and non-financial benefits. The declared level of acceptance to facilitating collective action and macro practice of social work was lower. The results also reveal the attitudes of social workers to social rights and social problems.

Various methodological approaches have been appearing in Polish social work for several years, referring to experiences proven in other countries, such as the Solution Focused Approach, Family Group Conference, Motivating Dialogue, Video Interaction Training (VIT), supervision, coaching or community organization/development. What distinguishes them from the current characteristics of methodological activities is opposition to the problem-oriented model dominating social work in Poland and developing a commonly recognizable solution-oriented model. The aim of this article is to present a preliminary concept of a new methodological approach – Positive Social Work (PSW) – its assumptions, to define theoretical references and to characterize a specific “road map” for the development of this approach to the helping methodology.

Opis:
This article is inspired by an EU-founded project on intergenerational mentoring: ‘HEAR ME’, which was conducted from 2009–2011 in five European countries. Starting from the demographic challenges that affect all European welfare states, the authors discuss attitudes to and possibilities in involvement of older people in voluntary social work as mentors for young people. The challenge of the ageing societies is quite often discussed as the ‘burden of the elderly’ and discussed as an economic problem. However, the challenge is not only economical. It is also a social and cultural challenge, among other things because a unilateral focus on the economic aspects may cause dissolution of the social cohesion and decrease in well-being for far too many people. The HEAR ME project aimed at developing strategies for lifelong learning and new roles for older people based on their competences, network and an assumed desire of generativity. Action learning seems to be an appropriate learning concept in relation to keeping older people engaged in the community. The authors thus point at participating and lifelong learning as part of the answers to the demographic challenges, and they suggest what you might call a pedagogical turn in social work and social policy.

Family is a basic space for shaping a young person. The family is today the most important alternative form of child custody. Requires special attention and interest, especially those whose purpose is to provide support and assistance. Therefore, social work is becoming an important character as a form of support and help for foster families. The article presents an empowerment perspective, which is the foundation of solid social work and the desired social worker's activity. Bypassing them as a guide to working with a foster family is the closure of social work in standard forms of help, focused on problems rather than family resources. There are then blockades that hinder the wider perception of reality as a surrogate family. Meanwhile, relativity in social work has a strong influence on the most important person in the family and provides a guarantee of good cooperation.

Introduction: Polish society is ageing, which means that the population of the elderly represents, and will continue to represent, an increasing proportion of the population. This situation implies a number of consequences and problems that need to be solved. This paper discusses one of the important issues related to an ageing Polish society, which is social work with elderly women and men. Method: The article is based on qualitative research (structured in-depth interview) conducted in 2011 among employees of social welfare centers (social workers and psychologists) in Podlaskie Voivodship. The study covered all the social welfare centers in the voivodship. As many as 145 interviews were conducted – 133 with social workers and 12 with psychologists. Results and conclusions: This paper discusses the similarities and differences in working with elderly women and men, illustrated with the statements of social welfare employees. Respondents indicated that working with seniors is more difficult than with young people as it requires more time and patience. However, there are also many advantages of this kind of contact, such as seniors’ gratitude and their cultured approach to social workers. Seniors’ gender also matters. Men are less likely to report to the centers, but if they decide to take such a step, they work harder than women and do not withdraw from the activity. In the summary of the paper, there are directions for future activities in the field of social work with the elderly.

Opis:
Biographical interviewing is used not only in research but also in clinical work such as social work practice. However, as social work settings differ from research settings, the ways of doing, analyzing, and using biographical interviews will differ. The differences arise from the reasons for and the purposes of the interview, the institutional context, the relationship between interviewer and interviewee, interviewees’ capacity for storytelling and reflective work, time limits, the structure of the biographical interview, and follow-up interviewing. In social work, interviewees are in a more vulnerable position than in research, and there is a stronger power imbalance. The service users’ expectations are essential for the work, and it is important that the users articulate their expectations because the purpose of social work is to change and improve the life situation of service users. This asks for ethical considerations that are partly different from those necessary in research. The biographical interview with Natalia is here analyzed using the strengths perspective as the social work theoretical framework. The analysis shows that in her present life Natalia has many strengths and resources, which, in a social work situation, could be mobilized to support her in getting more control over her life. Her perceived strengths are: her capacity for storytelling and reflection; her emotional and cognitive capacities; her willpower; and her capacity for enjoying her present life and planning for her future. Resources identified are: her significant others; her economic situation; her satisfying job situation; her capacity to have dreams for the future; and her religion. Implications for social work, both in the past and in the present, are discussed.

The reflection on the idea of empowerment has been strongly emphasized in numerous theoretical studies in recent years. There are numerous values of this concept, however difficulties arise with the moment of transition it from the theoretical to the practical perspective. There are many situations where the subjective approach penetrates with the no subjective one. The purpose of this article is to explore the (non)subjective support relationship in social work (among clients, families and social workers) as a not obvious, barrier-restricted and not always able to use in practice. The analysis of the issue was conducted in the context of different conditions, e.g. functioning of social welfare clients, the work of professionals and the social welfare system, and the impact of these factors on the way how the helping relationship was created. The answer to the question if the helping relationship in social work can become subjective is not easy at the moment. As the authors emphasized in the final conclusions, the subjectivity in the helping process has the opportunity to appear in the strengths-based social work practice, especially in empowerment approach, Solution Focused Approach, Family Conference Group, Video Interaction Training or Motivational Interviewing. The article also presents the possibilities and dilemmas of applying these approaches in the practice of social work.

Wydawała ona własne książki i czasopisma. Organizowała wiele akcji i rekolekcji. Wobec narastającego w latach siedemdziesiątych alkoholizmu i demoralizacji społecznej, ks. Blachnicki zainicjował w roku 1979 kolejny ruch trzeźwościowy – Krucjatę Wyzwolenia Człowieka. Widząc zakłamanie systemu komunistycznego, propagandy „szerokiego poparcia społecznego”, w marcu 1980 r. wezwał oazowiczów do bojkotu „wyborów” w PRL i przemyślenia swojego uczestnictwa w partii komunistycznej i w innych marksistowskich organizacjach.
Rev. Franciszek Blachnicki (1921-1987) is counted among the people who in a special way influenced the shaping of the Polish society in the period of the Polish People’s Republic. He spent the Second World War as a prisoner in Auschwitz and other Nazi camps and prisons. After the war he entered the Seminary and in 1950 he started his pastoral work. In the years 1957-1960 he developed a temperance movement – The Temperance Crusade whose central office was located in Katowice. It published its own books and periodicals and it organized numerous actions and retreats. After the Crusade was abolished by the State authorities Rev. Blachnicki started liturgical and catechetic work, initiating the Oasis Movement in 1969. The participants in this movement adopted a style of life that was different from the one popular in the Polish People’s Republic. Despite difficulties created by the communist authorities the Light – Life Movement developed dynamically, gathering 78 thousand people in summer retreats at the end of the 1980s. Because of alcoholism and social demoralization that grew in the 1970s Rev. Blachnicki initiated another temperance movement in 1979 – The Crusade for the Liberation of Man. Seeing the hypocrisy of the communist system and the propaganda of a “broad social support” in March 1980 he appealed to the Oasis participants to boycott the “election” in the Polish People’s Republic and to think over their membership in the communist party and in other Marxist organizations. In the “Solidarity” period Rev. Blachnicki prepared a special program of evangelization retreats for working people. In November 1981 he initiated an association called the Independent Christian Social Service. In 1982, in emigration in Germany, he established the Christian Service for the Liberation of Nations. The association worked for the liberation of nations that lost their statehood or independence. Rev. Blachnicki’s dynamic work was stopped by his sudden death in February 1987.

This article discusses conditions of professional social work in public organizations, especially from the perspective of the Nordic countries. We propose that public arenas for social work consist of three domains with different functions and logics, yet interconnected and interdependent. These domains are the domain of politics, the domain of management and administration, and the domain of professional practice. The individual local organizations – made up of these domains with their respective logics – are in turn conditioned by a fourth domain, the domain of institutional conditions. This latter domain contains ideals of control, norms, and views of knowledge and technologies that exist in society, that are legitimized and disseminated by central institutions, and that govern important aspects of how the individual local organizations work. The purpose of this work is to contribute to the development of a domain theory for the organization of social work in the public sector.

The article aims to present the results of research on the use of standardised tools that measure the level of commitment and exposure to human rights of social workers and social work students. The research was based on the adaptation procedure of two separate scales – Human Rights Engagement in Social Work and Human Rights Exposure in Social Work – to Polish cultural background and linguistic environment. The first part discusses issues related to the importance of human rights in social work, up-to-date status human rights-based social work perspective and a literature review in this area. The research part presents the procedure and discusses the results of theoretical validity and reliability tests. The Cronbach alpha coefficient was obtained at the level of .877 and .845, which indicates a high level of internal compatibility. It was not possible to determine the nature of the regularities shaping the relationships between the variables, items of the scale In the case of the Human Rights Engagement in Social Work scale the exploratory factor analysis (Varimax rotation) made it possible to identify five factors explaining 51.9% of the variability. In the case of the Scale of Human Rights Engagement in Social Work, the exploratory factor analysis allowed for the identification of five factors explaining 58% of the variance of variables. In the case of Human Rights Exposure in Social Work, factor analysis made it possible to identify three factors explaining 65% of variances. Then, an attempt was made to interpret the results and the perspective of the potential application of scales over the attitudes of social workers and students of social work was presented. Polish versions of the scales were also described. The results of the analysis of the Polish version of the scales indicate that they are reliable and possess theoretical accuracy, thus allow for measuring the level of engagement and exposure to human rights knowledge in the field of social work.

This paper provides an overview concerning the connections between prevention and social work. Both these types of activity have a common origin because they are derived from the theory of social pedagogy. At present, there is a growing need for social security as well as prevention which attempts to go beyond the existing facts and prevent aggravation of pathological phenomena in families and local communities. A major role in social security is played by social work performed with the aim of improving the functioning of individuals and families in their natural habitat. It includes elements of prevention preceded by a good diagnosis as well as pre-planned and methodical influencing based on the contract with the client. Both social work and prevention have the same axiological bases, which means that the supreme value is man who has the right to development, social participation and self-determination despite the difficulties they encounter. In addition to many other functions, social work also fulfils the preventive function through the actions that are undertaken in order to prevent the occurrence or development of adverse behaviours, states or phenomena in a particular population. The essence of these actions is to counteract such threats the occurrence or intensification of which is probable in the future.

In many countries of the Global North, social work developed as an independent profession and discipline in the 20th century. One of the countries in which social work became established as a professional field was Germany. This field's origins go back to the “social question”. The articles in this volume deal with current social work issues, offering an insight into the current state of discussion on each topic in Germany. They all draw attention to the complex interplay between local social work and the field’s expansion beyond individual places and national states, and the interconnections between national societal developments in Germany and those on an international, global level.

Opis:
Human life has two forms. The first one is the successful management of private, professional life, the second one is in certain moments inability to harmonize their states and processes with the environment. Here we can see the effect of the social worker and his client. Client - an individual who at some point cannot understand the meaning of his own actions, gets into situations that seem to be so difficult to manage and he is not able even think about possible strategies for solutions. Social worker - a person who has such a wide range of options to address the adverse situations that at one point he is capable to offer and apply several solutions. The social worker is, therefore a person who has theoretical knowledge and social skills, knows how to react and propose a solution. Career opportunities in practice are wide and necessary due to the increasing number of socio-pathological phenomena, problems and vulnerable groups. Social skills are trainable. It is, therefore necessary to appeal to the development of these skills, which influence the future direction of personality and career opportunities in the field of social work.

Opis:
As is often said, social work is not just a profession but a service for the sake of those who are experiencing life crises. Some expect fully professional services, others deep empathy toward clients. Meanwhile, social workers are ever more frequently pointing out the difficulties with reconciling these (often divergent) expectations. Among the reasons indicated for this situation are divergences connected with the processes of upbringing in families, especially problems with generational transmission and the conveyance of essential norms and values. Both social workers themselves and society are posing the question: what should a social worker (or similar professional) be like? The accepted standards of social service do not resolve these issues – the established methods and techniques of activity are not enough. This is true because in each activity there appears a particular person with his or her individual problems. This reality requires a holistic perspective – in both its material and spiritual aspect, taking into account individual experience and the social context. This attitude undoubtedly represents a characteristic element of this profession. To serve another by helping is not the same as being a servant, and accompanying does not mean doing everything for the person. These problems constitute part of a wider debate on the possible limits of professionalization from the point of view of the worker’s ethical responsibilities. This article presents and analyzes results of a survey of final-year students of Social Work and Family Science studies at one of the Krakow universities, which inquired about preferred values that are important for social workers’ personal lives and professional activities.

In Germany, social work has long been more than what it was originally intended to be; it is more than an emergency support provided outside the school and family. Its fields of practice have changed over time, and analysis of those historical changes show that social work has become a constituent part of the welfare state’s basic provisions and developed a pool of pro-fessional knowledge, while its practitioners have spread into an ever more specialised array of fields. Social work has normalised into a service which modern societies need for their devel-opment and integration. As the welfare state developed its modern influence, occupations in the social sector have become part of the social infrastructure, even if market mechanisms and competition are gradually exerting greater influence in those fields of practice. However, in times of scarcity and global change, the fields of social work practice also face other chal-lenges.

For years, there has been an ongoing discussion on social work in the perspective of it being “in-between the social services and the authorities.” The jubilees referred to in this article, 100 years of social work in the world and 50 years since the official introduction of the “social worker” profession into the list of professions in Poland, provide an opportunity to draw attention to the discussion on biblical and philosophical inspirations for what was historically known as charity or philanthropy and today is called social work.

Opis:
In social practice, use of supervision becomes a natural part of improving the activities of so-cial workers and professional employees. These include some legislative conditions; supervision prac-tice has a sufficient number of accredited supervisors. So far supervision activity was mainly focused on raising the professional competences of employees of social services and to support the work teams in these entities. Experience, however, also point out the necessity to pay increased attention to the burnout of employees in these entities. The social worker’s activity in the discussed area is characterised by the diversity of clients from of view of their personal, social, health problems, as well as their work load and low salary. The problem of burnout syndrome of social workers and professional staff of public policy institutions so far was not paid attention to. No research have not been carried out, which showed this issue. The contribution is focused, in addition of theoretical contexts, to analyse the impact of supervision process at the prevention of burnout among professionals. The paper is intended to analyse the impact of the supervision process on prevention of the burnout syndrome in helping professions. The results presented have come from the research in which 93 supervisors and 260 professionals from institutions of social services took part. The aim of the research was to identify presence of an analysed theme in the process of supervision and find out what preferred ways of solving them are. A part of the research was diagnosing the burnout syn-drome on concerned helping professionals and identifying the impact of supervision on this threat. The quantitative exploratory method was used in the research mentioned. The results have produced some valuable findings: the burnout syndrome is often a primary as well as secondary theme of su-pervision of helping professionals and supervision is an effective tool of the burnout syndrome pre-vention.

The authors present the On-line on-Soul student education initiative, which was directly stimulated by the change of the form of academic education in the period of increasing COVID-19 threat. The substantive focus of group activity was the opportunity to discuss the consequences of the global state of isolation for the mental health of people and social groups, and to conduct it in the conditions of remote communication. The process, initiated in April 2020, is an example of good practice in education for social work, which – in the changed conditions of new everyday life – develops key professional competences: the ability to cooperate, closeness, openness as well as learning and giving meaning to crisis situations.

This article is an attempt to examine the new tasks and functions of social work in a society in which the biggest challenge is no longer the fight with exclusion arising from poverty, but the fight against exclusion originating in social, cultural and political differences. It is also an attempt to look at these tasks and functions in a society increasingly dominated by individuals who are less willing to undertake actions for the common good, who create a ‘society of individuals’ in which social bonds are loosening.

The education towards the job of a social employee requires the learning of specific knowledge that ensures the interdisciplinary and versatile preparation of a future professional. In this aspect, social projects are of particular importance as due to their multitasking requirements they stimulate student activity, allow for the combination of knowledge with action and activate reflexive behaviour, which allows for the evaluation of the designed activities. The preparation and implementation of projects are related to the necessity to assume a number of roles, creating the opportunity to test oneself in new activities and to determine the degree of self-readiness to do/perform the job. The aim of the article is to highlight the educational values of designing and presenting the structure of social projects realized at the Social Work Unit at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Silesia. The text also points out the difficulties that occur during the specific stages of project work and provides tips in order to avoid such difficulties.

In this regard, the authors ponder upon diverse understanding of human dignity, including human dignity as a socio-legal value and its importance to social work in general and to other principal values relevant for social work. They examine the evolution of social work approaches towards human dignity while focusing on social work related international organizations and their national members' and partners' work to promote and uphold human dignity in delivery processes of social services.

The purpose of the article is to consider a unit and family experience in confrontation with an oncology disease, showing a high degree of complexity and psych-social functioning marked with a disease. The knowledge on physical, social, emotional, existential-spiritual consequences of the disease is the basis for the ability to assess, to which degree the disturbances affect the well-being of the family and his family. However it is one of the prerequisites which encourages for deepening theoretical bases for the actions for undertaking practical consid-erations with reference to the shape of the aid offer which should be available within the support system for the patients and their families in oncological disease within social work. Among the activities concerning executing care of the patients, being recommended in the oncological tasks of the social workers is the need to accompany the units and the family faced with the disease in obtaining the possibility to function in social roles as most as possible: marital/partner, family, in professional roles. These oncological social workers undertake effective interventions allowing for overcoming the consequences of the crisis caused by the disease and strengthening the resources in the interpersonal relations and the environment of the patient. The professional work oriented to strengthening the families of the oncologically sick persons consti-tutes a special area which may extend the professional identity of the social worker with the activity in the field which is somehow a statutory obligation of the social work, but its use in practice is not a common phenomenon.

The following article analyses participation possibilities of older people in Austria based on the demographic change. On this basis, categories of work types are established and discussed. This concerns the areas of people’s own work, familial work, informal and formal engagement as well as paid work. The social worker’s attempts to the creation of the informal and formal engagement are presented from an Austrian perspective. Introduced volunteers centres and citizens’ offices devote themselves to the coordination of the engagement within the community. In addition, there are new attempts arising in volunteer’s work, like for example voluntourism. Social inequalities are to be considered in participation within society. Th ese form along the differences of age, gender, levels of education, migration and socio-economic status. Different participation areas are furthermore to be distinguished against the background of a critical discourse around participation. Participation can cause positive eff ects for older people and therefore it seems important to work on its realization. Part of this task is to indicate diff erent barriers and possibilities of implementation. Finally, quantitative proportions and developments in the diff erent working forms of older people will be discussed.

Opis:
Although parents are a vital cog in instilling and maintaining child discipline, very little information exists about the methods they employ. Using a qualitative approach, this paper explored the methods used by parents in Zimbabwe—an African context—to discipline children, elucidating their implications on children’s rights. The findings show that parents in Zimbabwe use both violent and non-violent disciplinary methods such as verbal reprimand, beating, and spanking, which, at times, violates children’s rights in the process. The use of non-violent means has also depicted a violation of children’s rights through deprivation of food, denial of playtime and shelter. Evident from the findings was, again, the existence of multiple-layered contestations on child discipline within the socio-cultural discourse—the most popularized being the debate on corporal punishment versus child rights violations. Through social work lenses, the paper provides a basis to dispel an anachronistic thought, which rationalizes the instrumentalization of punishment to achieve child discipline, underscoring the need for child rights-oriented discipline.

Opis:
In Germany, as in Poland, the genesis of care for the weak dates back to the Middle Ages. Insurance laws adopted in 1883 – 1884 and in 1889 (Bismarck empire) still work as the basis of insurance, and the model created by Bismarck was accepted by other countries and has been the basis of a social state. The legislative amendments carried out in the 90s in German insurance system reinforced the development of social sphere together with the development of social work. The article deals with the practical dimension of social work, which has been accompanied by the dynamic and multilateral development of theory. The variety and ambiguity of terms in the area of social work is also one of the presented problems. It also looks at German theorists of social work and their concepts at the turn of the 20th and 21st century.

Social work is practiced all over the world with the primary aim of helping individuals and improving the welfare of the general society. Ghana is a multi-ethnic society with a multitude of different cultural practices that may affect social work interventions (implementation by practitioners and clients’ response). The main goal of this paper is to show how indigenous cultural practices in Ghana shape the way of supporting children, older people, people living with physical disabilities and mental health disorders, and the socially excluded. This paper relies on available literature and the first-hand account of the author. The extended family system where parenting, kinship, and identity includes the nuclear family as well as grand-parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws is prominent in Ghana, especially in rural areas. The positive aspect of this system as shown in this paper shows the merits in a collectivist approach to social welfare. However, some aspects of local cultural practices are shown to limit how vulnerable people have access to needed help. The article indicates the need to prepare social workers in such a way that their practice is adjusted to respond to local cultural practices in order to ensure more people have access to help and reduce the potential of rejection by people in local communities. It also contributes to the discussion on the merits of indigenization of social work.

The article focuses on selected contexts of unemployment of young people, characteristic features of protection of the young people against unemployment. Youth unemployment as a multidisciplinary problem must be seen in several contexts and that is why social workers should be familiar with these wider social aspects. In spite of that, we cannot ignore the importance of changes in individual characteristic features of the young unemployed or of the youth threatened by unemployment. Consistent action of all actors participating in dealing with the problem is necessary to achieve a measurable output, i.e. to decrease youth unemployment but also to protect young people against unemployment.

The purpose of this publication is introductory presentation to the reflection on the epistemological dimension of social work. I refer here to the intended triptych announced in the first volume, a book that came out in 2009 1. The course of the whole utterance is conducted from the perspective of social pedagogy, which corresponds to my disciplinary affiliation. I am referring directly to the sources plotted by Helena Radlińska’s pen, and for me she makes an example of a Master consistent in her views and action, both at the level of academic and social activity. Tackling the issue of the epistemological dimension of social work I refer to the socio-pedagogical tradition of cognitive activities (research). That is at the same time an invitation to a discussion about cognition and getting to know everyday affairs of human life, since they are of interest to academics as well as practitioners involved in social ser- vice. A particular point of concern is the area of social work, which is where the process- ing of the reality of everyday life takes place. The uniqueness of the specifics of this area requires the researchers to think deeply before taking any action meant to interfere with life whose main actors are people. A Hippocrates’s principle Primum non nocere, seems to be a special beacon, which cannot be neglected at any stage of planning and direct interfer- ence in the affairs of human life, families, groups, communities, etc. The observations devoted to the problem of the epistemological dimension of social work allow for stating clearly that social work is a real and relational being. Its referents can be found in the social work practice space, as well as in the sphere of reflection and theoretical deliberations on this practice. The socio-educational pedigree of social work goes back to the work of Helena Radlińska. This author, researcher and engaged activ- ist was at the same time active in the field of science, education, training, care, help, support and human development. She made social work one of the main areas of the sub-discipline of social pedagogy, which is her undisputed creation. The reflection con- ducted in this volume on the fundamental issue – the epistemological reference to social work – allows to confirm in conclusion that the being in question exists in the reality of social pedagogy. Through this relationship, boundaries extend to other pedagogy-related sciences, such as in particular andragogy, resocialization, special education, pedagogy of care, pedagogy of culture or pedagogy of work and other. At the same time, due to the ongoing relationships between social work and social action theory, philosophical reflection on action and deeds, and other theories and categories consistent with social action and social work, this being exists in the extra-pedagogical space. Here we can point to such disciplines and their sub-disciplines as in particular philosophy, political science (especially social policy), sociology (especially sociology of social problems), psychology (especially social psychology) and medicine (including occupational health, nursing and health sciences), economics (especially social economics), law (in particu- lar social law), management (including organization and administering or social market- ing), etc. In all these spheres we can find traits justifying the existence of social work fitting into the space of theoretical references and practical operation. In seeking solutions to the problems posed in the project that I carried out over the years 2000–2008, I collected empiric material allowing for, inter alia, the preparation of this volume. The leading issue of epistemological foundations of cognition of social work understood as a real and relational being is the central category subjected to reflection. The project was performed in accordance with the assumptions of Helena Radlińska for social pedagogy – exploration intermingled with action. The research problems included in it were expressed in the form of certain questions. For the part connected with the epis- temological layer of social work they related in particular to the foundations of getting to know the reality of this being. They also alluded to the ways of probing/learning about social work. As a result of participatory exploration, I would find solutions to the issues of great interest to me and – in the course of the above considerations – I tried to present them together with the reasons for the adopted positions. Below, there are contained the highlights of the findings. As the basis of cognition of social work we can indicate detailed/specific episte- mology of social work. It refers to sensory cognition, rational knowledge and emotional knowledge (experienced). Within the layer explaining the dependencies as well as the mechanisms and processes taking place in the theory and practice of social work, we can trace theories of social service, social work, social action and, last but not least, hu- man forces activation theories. Their usefulness in the context of explanations leads a re- searcher to understanding the matters falling within the area of social work. Thereby, they facilitate viewing the issues of processing the reality of social life in relation to the broader background of matters, events and processes taking place in the social, group, family or individual life of every person. The methodological basis for getting to know social work in the approach presented here is an orientation that I call the third way. However, it is not only the resultant of com- bining quantitative research with qualitative research, but an approach that also extends the range of operators of cognition. I assume an integrated (phased) method of viewing/ exploring the reality of social work, in which the researcher uses both the senses and the mind. Nevertheless, besides the classical system, I also perceive the importance of emotions that I treat as an element enriching the knowing subject in the relationship the researcher – the explored environment. Emotions, which undoubtedly accompany human relationships, are in my opinion one of the essential components determining cognition. This applies to both the volitional and the perceptual sphere. Hence, it is important that the researchers should be able to harness the emotional potential of their own forces and the forces of those who are complicit in research projects. It particularly concerns skilful management of emotions, so that they do not condition the cognitive process irrespective of the learning subject (individual or collective). Another factor determining the adoption of the above-mentioned assumptions for the research oriented towards redevelopment of the living conditions and human advancement is the fact that emotions are a constant component permanently inscribed in human nature. They decide on the type, quality or strength created in the exploratory field of interperson- al relationships. The researcher aiming to interact with the Other within the processes of discovering, strengthening and activation of human forces constantly encounters the emo- tions that accompany these relationships. They somehow get involved self-actively in the process of communication and cooperation. Emotions are therefore one of the ingredients associated with getting to know man and his environment. Thus, in the presented concept, I put the emotional sphere as one of the operators of cognition. I am at the same time aware that there will be both supporters and critics of this approach. Each of the presented argu- ments will be significant in the further reflection on the outlined issues. In social pedagogy defined as lived pedagogy, undertaken research is intermingled with action. In this context, a researcher cannot be seen as an external entity that conducts the study objectively, without emotions, foreknowledge, experience, etc. In social peda- gogy treated as learning by doing, the researcher is deontologicly obliged to get engaged in the explored environment. Emotions will accopmany the investigator at every stage of exploration and action to be taken in cooperation with project participants. In this context, the role of these emotions is specifically highlighted. There is therefore not only a need to consider them as a component of cognition, but also a necessity to skillfully use them to make the act of getting to know true and the action actually serve the reconstruction of social life. Inspiration in this regard is provided by social psychology, which includes statements on the emotional intelligence of man. Talking about the methodical layer of the epistemological dimension of social work I take as a reference point the integral model of the cognitive process throughout all its stages. This entails the legitimacy of the use of all available investigative methods. My cri- terion is the adequacy of selected methods and instruments accompanying them, accord- ing to the existing needs and possibilities. I emphasize here the special role of boundaries designated with ethical standards of social (socio-pedagogical) research. Thus, preserv- ing the fidelity and procedural consistency in relation to ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions, I adopt the free use of both quantitative and qualitative in- struments. Depending on the stage of the exploration, I treat each way towards cognition as equivalent to the remaining ones. Quantitative orientation allows one to grasp the trends and directions of interesting phenomena or processes against the background of broader references to the social, cultural, political, economic, or educational reality. Qualitative orientation ensures for the researcher the possibility of dealing with social work to inves- tigate deeper into narrower segments of reality. It also leads to the understanding of the essence of the phenomena and processes they learn about, and ensures the opportunity to get closer to the practice of the action of processing the conditions of life and human de- velopment. Through interactions with individuals and social groups, the researcher gains knowledge about the world and at the same time he or she can take the role of a promoter of environmental change realizing/materializing the ideal. The researcher has for this pur- pose well-founded arguments supported by the exploration and practical experience in the area of social service. I therefore point to the third way, which is commonly referred to as Action Research following the nomenclature used by Kurt Lewin, but which had already been applied in research attempts of the Polish social pedagogy it the interwar period. As regards the theoretical reference underpinning the presented concept of detailed episte- mology – epistemology of social work, I emphasize the role of the grounded theories and the constructivist theories that complement the theories of social activity, social action, social service and human forces activation. This collection provides the theoretical basis for the practice of social work. In the undertaken considerations, I have shown that gaining knowledge on social work involves learning about its individual segments. I have distinguished nineteen types (substantive ranges) of specific actions which constitute the area of social work. However, this catalogue is by no means a closed one. It is subject to constant transformation pro- cesses that determine the dynamics of change and development of the field of theory and practice of social work. Hence, the presented segments do not close the space of social work. In the ontological dimension it constitutes a being subject to cyclical advancement. This is accompanied by the expiration of some and the formation of further components ultimately determining social activities within the daily practice of services of specific professions. It is consistent with the concept of social pedagogy perceived as a practical science that serves practice. We could say that the space of social work has a matrix structure in the presented con- cept. It is sensitive to social change, which consequently determines the dynamic move- ments both in the field of social work, and beyond its borders. The anticipated further de- velopment of social work is the effect of these movements. This applies to the theoretical dimension, as well as practice and further specialization (segmentation) corresponding to this process. The fundamental factor integrating all segments of the activity occurring in the field of social work is education. It fills the space of the field, and also determines the scope and directions of the impact in specific segments of social work. Seeking for epistemological reasons of cognition of the being which is the central category of interest – namely, social work – I made an assumption about the relationships of epistemology and methodology. In particular, I thought that philosophical reflection on cognition expressed in the theory of knowledge/cognition encompasses the space of meth- odological reflection. In such reasoning, I referred to the analogy to the position recogniz- ing the existence of a detailed/specific methodologies. I assumed, therefore, that in the area of methodology conceived as meta-knowledge about the social purposes of scientific knowledge/cognition and legitimate strategies for their implementation, there are specific methodologies. Reasoning further, I assumed that in the broad philosophical reflection on cognition – general epistemology – detailed epistemologies are distinguished. This circle also includes a detailed epistemology of social work. Such assumption implied future directions of reflection. I included the narrower layer of methodological reflection into the area of theoretical reflection (epistemological) on the social work knowledge (epistemol- ogy of social work). It concerns the nature and methods of getting to know social work. This is the methodology of social work, which in the procedural dimension corresponds to the methodology of cognition of that being. The whole of this area recognized as meta- knowledge of social work cognition refers to the ontological, epistemological, and meth- odological plane, and ultimately the methodical one. The conducted considerations correspond to the tradition of pedagogical and social reflection and practice of cognitive activities taking place in the social work field real- ity. Based on the example of the research conducted by Helena Radlińska and her teams I presented ways of organizing research that was carried out in human life environments. I also portrayed methods and instruments which were used by the first social pedagogues in the course of gathering empirical material. With reference to the theoretical reflection of Helena Radlińska I depicted methodological bases of social pedagogy and rules for taking exploration in field of social activity. A leading role is played here by a man along with his forces. In accordance with the basic principles of social pedagogy, these forces are a crea- tive factor. Therefore, they are subject to the processes of discovering, strengthening, mul- tiplication and activation. Ultimately, they serve the reconstruction of the gregarious life in the name of an ideal. Social pedagogy is a borderland science in its nature. Hence, it draws benefits from many other disciplines, whose achievements are useful for pedagogues and social activists. They engage their forces in the co-creation process of everyday life real- ity, so as to make the conditions that occur there favorable for human development and multiplication of happiness experienced by every person. Conducting research in the field of social work is connected with practical activity. It is done for the purpose of creating the image of the analyzed reality and plotting the cor- responding maps. A parallel objective is activation of one’s own forces as well as those of other participants of the exploration oriented towards processing the reality of gregarious life. The research is going to serve a social activist in his or her daily occupation-related real- ity, and even in his or her daily service undertaken for the good of the Other. The resulting images and maps are a kind of a signpost, which will be used by a person getting engaged in the action in the field of social work. The creator of the map (who is often its user as well) is assumed to know the foreordination of the prepared product. Nevertheless, what is also necessary is the awareness of the conditions in which this map will be used. It must have not only the main roads and basic facilities marked, and secondary paths and points of lower significance will not be sufficient, either. This map must feature hills and valleys, hidden caves and trenches, irregularities of seemingly smooth surface and holes that entail risk of falling down. It needs to render, with all possible faithfulness, all dangers a social activist may encounter while taking action in a specific area of social work depicted on the map. Mapping the threats that may affect the processes of social activities is the nega- tive perspective of the created image. However, the image cannot be one-sided, and – in particular – sketched entirely from the negative point of view. It is also useful to identify these factors that constitute for the activist and social pedagogue support in the undertaken rebuilding of the reality. This also requires a precise definition of the positive values of the reality explored. In other words, there is a legitimate need for highlighting these roads, which are available and can also be used as an alternative. They will make a kind of emer- gency exits identified in case of possible failures encountered in the performance of the original action plan. Another important aspect of the diagnosis of conditions in which social activities will be undertaken is determination of the potential of environmental forces. Recognizing these factors, which in the course of processing the reality of life gregarious will provide support is a very important issue. It is not just about a kind of reserves of human forces, but first and foremost about the environmental causative attributes remaining in the potential disposal of a pedagogue or a social worker. An acting researcher will refer to these forces in situations where it will be necessary to strengthen the flagging strength. On the map there will make the points where the activist will be able to receive support in action, get competent advice or emotional strengthening, as well as refresh, relax, and verify the as- sumptions with the then current developments. There, he or she will find the opportunity to reflect and refocus the process when necessary. These sites are important for logistical, organizational, and mental reasons. A social activist (pedagogue or social worker) cannot be subject to the processes of instrumentalization or even dehumanization. As each action operator, however, such person is constantly exposed to several threats in this area. The existing risks make it necessary to take into account crises situations while preparing the concepts of support and recuperation involved in the process of rebuilding the gregarious life. At this point it can be added as a technical note that even the instruments of action require periodic maintenance and repairs. Therefore its is not surprising that a person who is involved in the processes of social and environmental change requires care and attention to efficiency in every aspect of his or her operation. This person must be at the same time aware that upon entering the path of processing the reality of human life he or she will receive ad- equate support – both personal and infrastructure. Without a clear diagnosis of the factors which a researcher may refer to during overload (a crisis), he or she would have a sense of lonely wandering without any hope for support. The accompanying attitudes are likely to lead to distortions in the course of interaction with the human forces that at each stage must be seen as partner forces. An activist, who is experiencing emotional alienation is prone to assuming authoritarian and even dictatorial attitudes. The loss of trust and instru- mentalism in interpersonal relations are only some possible derivatives of the process of growing frustration resulting from the destructive internal tensions (emotional, mental and spiritual). On the other side of this continuum, he or she may experience a subjective sense of injustice. The consequence of these states can be resignation and withdrawal from the path of cooperation in the processing of reality. Then, the loss of hope for the success of the mission will only be a correlate accompanying the process of self-marginalization of the social activist (pedagogue). An accurate picture of the existing reality facilitates the creation of models of ideal reality (its different dimensions). These models reflect the anticipated condition indicating the direction of actions taken up in the field of social work. This process involves planned development of strategies and programs for social activity and setting targets and tasks envisaged (necessary) for their implementation. In the practice of operational activities it is useful to assign specific performers to the appropriate tasks. A significant role in the selection of the executors of these tasks is played by their competences, predispositions, experience and skills. Also the resources made available and necessary for the implemen- tation of the distributed tasks are of substantial importance. With respect to the instru- ments, particularly noteworthy is the ability to properly use them. Excellent technical equipment is not enough because it will not have any meaning without proper imagination and the ability to make the use of the tangible assets. Due to the liquidity and efficiency of the actions taken, it is also necessary to identify the ways of achieving the assigned tasks and goals. At this stage of planning, a key role is played by the deadlines concerning the completion of the tasks. The individual activists (researchers) are obliged to fulfil the obligations taken at the indicated time intervals. However, these intervals cannot be the result of a priori arrangements made on the basis of evidence inadequate to the realities of practical action. It is particularly important in this aspect to search for such time frame- work which will take into account both the causative potential of the implementers and environmental conditions under which the activities will be carried out. Excessive short- ening of the period for the implementation of operational tasks in practice causes the need for changes in the schedule of the project. On the other hand, the unwarranted extension of these deadlines may lead to a decrease in efficiency due to postponing of the moment of launching concrete work. As a result of this phenomenon, there is a threat of misconduct and low quality of the execution of the tasks. This is related to undertaking the so-called delayed action, while still trying to implement it in the allotted time. This issue seems to be clear and unambiguous on the level of thought. However, in the practice of social activity it is one of the key factors generating disturbances in the realization of projects based on the interaction of the forces of collective entities. Hence, it deserves special attention in the course of the conceptual and planning works. Submitting at this point the research concept of creative cognition, which may be a way of conducting research in the field of social work, it is worth emphasizing once again the exceptional importance of the practical dimension of social work. Research in- tertwined with action has great causative potential, which can be used successfully in the system meant to support the human (social) development. The outline of this system was shown in the summary of the first volume of the anthology of social work – Introduction to ontology... (2009a). Assuming the historical perspective it can be seen that the origins of philanthropic activity was characterized by immediacy and attractive. With the increase of the public awareness, as well as according to the expansion of the concept of respect for human life and dignity of every human being, welfare activities were gaining more and more supporters and donors. As a result of the process of sensitizing people to social issues, there occurred gradual engagement of forces in rescue, compensation, care and assistance operations. This served strengthening the forces of the weak or those in need of support. The idea of getting involved in actions for the benefit of fellow human beings has been proliferating for centuries and gaining allies. In the initial period, this mainly concerned the orientation to counteract the effects of calamities that caused tragedies in everyday human life. The dominant activities were of protective and rescue character and served resolving or mitigating problems such as hunger, homelessness, illness, be- reavement, disability caused by participation in hostilities or arising at work. Benefactors funded field hospitals, shelters, soup kitchens, and offered spiritual support, or – in some cases – even material one. Along with the professionalization of these activities, there was a shift from orphanages and rescue centers to a higher level system solutions – social welfare. The idea of a care system, the coverage and the emerging foundations of profes- sionalization meant that the activity taken in this area referred to the idea of systematiza- tion. Securing the basic life needs of a man at the minimum biological level (referring to satisfying the existential needs), was gradually replaced by higher-standard services. As for their quality they corresponded to the level which is currently defined as the minimum subsistence level. It sets out the basic conditions of human life in accordance with the standards in a given time and space. The current stage of civilization development has helped shape the constitutive bases for the social assistance system. It is an expression of a deeper reflection on the nature of man and social issues that accompany human existence. It marks a higher level of de- velopment of system activities in relation to the previously functioning welfare system. Progressive standardization, attention to the quality of offered social services, care for man perceived as a subject of interaction and, at the same time, a multidimensional being – thesea are the attributes of development. They are also the impulses, which can be read in the context of the described changes as a manifestation of the development of civiliza- tion. This observation leads to the conclusion that the offer of the twenty-first century are system products of increasingly higher quality. They make it easier to overcome the hardships that people experience in different types of situations destituting their existence. However, a significant feature of the aid scheme is its focus on the social sphere. In prin- ciple, the products offered by social assistance serve providing support to people who are unable to cope on their own with solving problems and issues marginalizing or completely excluding them from the social life. At the same time, in the operation of this system, we can recognize certain elements that give hope of moving on to the next stage of the system development. These include in particular measures meant to stimulate people to explore their own potential and activation of the possessed forces. The aim here is to overcome the passiveness and active participation in the processes of co-creation of everyday life reality. Another designate inscribing in the formal and legal dimension of the functioning of this system in Poland is the evolution of language. The name that is becoming increasingly more common and is used in the official nomenclature and the discourse conducted within the system refers to the idea of social integration of individuals, families, social groups, as well as the society as a whole. This is reflected by the formal name of the department in the Ministry of Social Policy – support and social integration. This can be read as the next step in the system development. Anticipating the directions for further transformations in the area of social activities on the Polish soil, we can re-invoke the concept of the system of human (social) develop- ment support. It involves going beyond the activity of social nature. Giving the system activities social significance extends the range of possibilities and the extent of impact. The social dimension is a component of the space relating to the social field of activity of individuals, institutions or organizations undertaking social activities. Such orienta- tion seems to reflect the increasing level of substantive quality within the system. It does not limit itself to solving problems, or even preventing them. First of all, it refers to the idea of co-creation such conditions in which human creative potential will be used. The general assumption states that man co-participating in social activities will be subject to ongoing development. He will be a subject of co-creation of the everyday life reality. The process of joint transformation of the conditions of gregarious living will therefore advance the development of human resources. It will also stimulate individuals and whole communities to be active to achieve ever higher social self-consciousness. The culture of cooperation based on the ideas of humanist subjectivity, partnership and respect for hu- man dignity will in this approach fill the space of community involvement in the affairs of everyday life. The realization of the ideal outlined in this way may in turn add to the dynamics of the process of people growing into the idea of humanity. The interiorization of this idea can help individuals and social groups in the process of acquiring the features that constitute the being of a human actively immersed in the reality that is co- -created, -processed, -reconstructed. One could say that the concept of the system of human (social) development support is a proposal whose primary purpose is to coordinate and integrate activities. They are focused on both solving problems and social issues and preventing them. This area also comprises rescue actions. They have a use in emergency situations of crisis, when short- term projects are most needed and effective. However, the foundation of this system is supporting man in the development of his potential. It is used for achieving increasingly higher ability to be a partner co-creating the reality and co-responsible for the quality and quantity of achieved results related to social interaction. That makes a man endowed with specific personal resource values become a contributor to the reality of everyday life. He is therefore the subject of cooperation and – at the same time – the recipient of the manu- factured goods for the public and individual use. Through social self-consciousness, he is able to make sacrifices and compromises in the name of solutions meant to improve the quality of social life. Understanding of the nature of social relationships and interpersonal dependencies causes in the assumed approach that that the person involved in the process of co-creation and co-transformation of the living environment skillfully eases social ten- sions generated by differences in individual human interests. Sensitivity, as well as emo- tional and social intelligence lead an active social co-activist to rational choices based on substantive grounds. Taking into account the local specificities rooted in the supra-local space he or she can participate in co-transformation of the gregarious living conditions in the name of an ideal. The ideal approach outlined above to model system solutions undertakes to indicate paths approximating a man to the ideal state. The available capacity comprises social work, which in the considered approach I can point to as a primary path to perfection. As a theory, and the more so as a sphere of practice it can be extremely useful. In the applica- tion context, social work can be seen as a set of instruments fit for use in the processes of the transformation of the reality of human life. Utilization of this tool conglomerate is possible both at the stage of the social development support system, and as part of its op- eration. In this aspect, it seems that the rank of research concepts enabling the exploration of the area of social work is increasing. Getting to know it bears the marks of a permanent process that once started is a continuous one contributing to the transformation of the life reality of individuals, families, communities, groups of people, social groups and the en- tire human race. It is in fact exploration based on action intertwined with research. Cognition of social work can be carried out in the course of projects based on the as- sumptions of the research-action concept. It is accompanied by a process of transforming the explored environments of human life. This approach, however, requires appropriate competences form the researcher active in the field of social work. This in turn is related to the necessity of proper preparation/training of the exploring activists in the area of crea- tive cognition. Referring once again to the guidelines Helena Radlińska I can re-prime in this context the postulate of thorough preparation for research work. It applies to both academics and representatives of practical activity. In cognitive processes based on the assumptions of the concept of research linked with action (which in a simplified way can be defined as creative cognition) they are equal partners. The experience gained through the undertaken research projects lead me to report a general statement. It refers to the realm of attitudes adopted by an active researcher in the field of social activity. I mean here the attitude towards the world around them and the role assumed by the co-participating researchers. Exploring the field of social work requires reflection on this issue. It is connected with a number of interpersonal relations tied up during the project at each stage of its conceptualization and implementation. The adopted attitudes reflect the approach of the investigating researcher towards the environ- ment covered by the project. In the operational dimension, it is therefore necessary to determine the superior goal that determines the planned cognitive activity. This issue becomes particularly important in the context of releasing (activation) the potential of human forces. It applies both to the researcher’s own forces and those at the disposal of the persons co-participating in cogni- tive situations. In this regard, it is useful to refer to the reflection of Helena Radlińska. She emphasized that social pedagogy is a a practical science serving life. This entails the need to identify appropriate goals of the research conducted in the field of social work practice. From the pedagogical and social message it can be gathered that they should ultimately contribute to the creative use of the expenditures (in terms of forces, time, energy, material resources – property, financial resources, etc.). The practical nature of social pedagogy in- clines/leads to constructing such research projects that will contribute to the multiplication of the human good. They will facilitate multiplication of the knowledge of the explored reality. The application dimension of this knowledge will be used for the benefit of the activities undertaken in the area of social work. Summing up the considerations dedicated to the epistemological aspect of social work, I can pose a crucial question. It may be the beginning of the cognitive process un- dertaken in the area of each segment of the reality of human life. This question bears a tele- ological meaning and refers to the aim of cognition – why?, for what purpose?, what is this cognition for? These are relevant issues from the point of engagement of human forces, the potential of which should be utilized as efficiently as possible. Referring to the goal of the cognitive activities carried out, the researcher is faced with the fundamental problem of determining his or her position in the investigated reality. The aim of the research sets the place of the exploring subject, which in the socio-pedagogical research is required to actively participate in the life of the explored reality. This objective also determines the instruments that can and should be applied to achieve the desired effects of interference in a segment of the human life reality. I can apply here a comparison of a researcher and a student. The latter, in order to gain academic recognition, makes the goal of studying his or her personal development, acquisition of knowledge, mastering skills and improv- ing performance that will enable him or her the application of the gathered knowledge in practical activities. An important result, though somewhat secondary, is the result of a test, quiz or exam. Grades are for such student some indication of the progress in the process of studying. This tool provides feedback on the areas that are already mastered sufficiently for a given level of educational advancement. They also yield information about the issues that require further work in to correct and improve one’s performance. The same can be said about a researcher who will gain recognition when the cogni- tive actions taken by him or her will serve life. The cognitive goal is fundamental, but not the only one. We can even consider its secondary position with respect to the practice of reconstruction of reality in the course of action. This is due to the recognition of the pref- erential role of social service. Cognition, in this approach, can lead to building theory and development of a scientific discipline. However, in the context of a practical orientation, these will be effects that are associated with the preparation for the work of rebuilding the reality of human life. The resulting theories can thus be useful for the practice of social ac- tivities, but will not be recognized as an autonomous scientific goal. Cognition and its theo- retical consequences are to contribute to efficient utilization of human forces in the processes of transformation of everyday human existence. In the practice of socio-pedagogical re- search, cognition of reality leads to exploring the potential of available (implicit, explicit) human forces. This diagnosis is essential in planning social activities that are undertaken with these forces. It determines the rationality of engaging the potential at hand that de- serves to be used successfully and effectively. From the socio-pedagogical perspective it seems that the practical and humanistic goal is as important as the cognitive and academic goal. In contrast, a widely recognized human (social) interest is put over the research interest, oriented at achieving theoreti- cal gains. This does not mean, however, that the scientific dimension of cognition and its theory-creating character are harmed. These are inter-balancing aspects of cognition conducted in the area of social pedagogy. Their final effects heighten the effectiveness of social activity. Hence, one should not interpret too hastily the thoughts expressed here, and presume that the guiding thesis put forward by is deprecating the theoretical dimension of the activities of social pedagogues with simultaneous appreciation of the practical context of their activity. Identifying with the viewpoint of Helena Radlińska I accept that social pedagogy as a science is to serve life. It is a hands-on science, so it chooses serving for processing the reality of gregarious life in the name of an ideal as its top priority. However, in order for this service to be efficient and kept at a high level, social activities must be grounded to a good theoretical foundation. In such cases, practice is based on the universe, not the casuistry, which enables efficient operation in identified situations. Social service is a service to the future, and also a service to the unknown, as expressed by Helena Radlińska. It requires then good preparation justified with general statements explaining certain regularities with which the getting-to-know creator (acting in the environment of human life) will deal in everyday service. Therefore, the priority attributed in the context of cognition to the reality of social work does not diminish the importance of its theoreti- cal dimension, which arises as a result of cognition, as an element accompanying gaining knowledge about the reality subject to exploration.

The volunteer work becomes an important element of the public domain which needs qualitative changes and creation of a new social consciousness. Characteristic features of the volunteer work are mainly connected with the fact that it focuses on a human being in need. They can also be connected with social work as a supporting activity for people in various difficult situations. Although the history of social work shows many examples of relations between volunteer work and professional social work – contemporary volunteer work cannot be identified with social work. However, the activities of many students of social studies in associations and non-governmental organizations are very important for their personal and professional development, creating their competences and gaining experiences for the future professional work. Reflections concerning the volunteer work and its role in the field of social work education are important and may be treated as an element of discussion concerning education in connection with democracy and social/public activity in general. The article includes theoretical analysis of the selected aspects of volunteer work and professional social work, discovering the possible similarities and differences between those forms of social activity and emphasizing the role of volunteer work in shaping the professional competences within the field of social work.

The aim of the article is to review the applicable normative acts related to the divorce of parents from the point of view of risk and the opportunities they create for the situation of the child and the family. The authors draw attention to the responsibility of social workers and family assistants in the process of supporting families in this crisis. The increasing number of divorces in Poland obliges researchers to undertake scientific discussions and conduct reliable scientific research, the results of which will also be changes in the practical approach of professionals working with families. The first part of the article focuses on the negative consequences of the development of children who are witnesses and victims of a family crisis and the relationship between children and parents. The authors emphasise the essence of tasks undertaken in social work addressed to the whole family experiencing a crisis caused by the breakdown of the parents’ marriage. In the last part of the article, the authors take up a polemic about supervision in social work, as an example of good practice in developing the competence of family assistants and social workers in their professional work.

The 21st century is characterised by many changes and related anxiety. The development of new technologies, climate crisis, pandemic or armed conflicts translate into the functioning of individuals, groups and communities. Social workers are not indifferent to these issues. They react to the occurring phenomena by educating, animating, motivating and providing broadly understood support. This article was inspired by papers presented during this year's conference organised by the European Association of Schools of Social Work and the Institute of Social Services of Porto (Instituto Superior de Serviço Social do Porto) that took place on June 20–23, 2023. The content presented by its speakers is supplemented in this paper with references to domestic and foreign literature on the subject.

The purpose of this article is an attempt to show the development of Polish social work based on the works of Prof. Ryszard Borowicz. In the text were subjected to scientific reflections definitions and the main categories of research described by the author, which may be a starting point for the development of the theory and practice of social work (human dignity, work, equality and social justice, the auto-selection). The author devotes attention to questions of education and social work tasks facing contemporary social work. Text analysis R. Borowicz has allowed many findings. The main thing is that social work is transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary science that combines the traditions of different disciplines (especially sociology, pedagogy, social policy), the creation of social theory and practice should benefit from the experience of the world, but without forgetting the native and most importantly you need think about the future, and not focus on the present, because there will be more social problems and new needs that challenge for social work. Notably, many of the issues raised by the researcher is still valid and therefore worth reaching for his works and re-discover them.

W pierwszej części artykułu dokonano wyjaśnienia podstawowych pojęć, następnie scharakteryzowano profil „dłużnika-emeryta”, uwzględniając główne przyczyny i konsekwencje zadłużenia osób starszych. W kolejnej części podjęto próbę zidentyfikowania możliwości wsparcia, jakie mogą uzyskać zadłużeni seniorzy z ramienia instytucji pomocowych, w tym głównie pracownika socjalnego.
Old age is a stage in the life cycle in which people particularly need the support of their family and institutions. Social assistance institutions, especially social workers working directly in the residential environment, are therefore faced with a special task of dealing with situations that may endanger the safety of the elderly. One such threat is the current debt of Polish seniors – almost half of elderly people have loan commitments. The aim of this study is to analyse the phenomenon of indebtedness of older people, with emphasis on the possibilities of support. In order to achieve this goal reliably, the available literature and the latest reports of the Economic Information Bureau have been analysed. In the first part of the article the basic concepts were explained, and then the profile of the “pensioner-debtor” was characterized, considering main causes and consequences of debt of elderly people. In the next part, an attempt was made to identify the possibilities of support that can be obtained by senior debtors on behalf of assistance institutions, mainly social workers.

The article raises an important issue which is the lack of information within the framework of conducted activities, which is visible on many levels of work with the family in which there is domestic violence. It seems that the Polish system of counteracting domestic violence appears to many practitioners as an area requiring a continuous evaluation process, implemented in such a way that on the local ground it is possible to "diagnose" the difficulties faced by specialists creating a local system of counteracting domestic violence. In the area of diagnosing local difficulties, it seems that too little reflection is devoted to many other important issues. Therefore, can evaluation be a response to the lack of reflection and reliable information?

In the last few decades, the traditional concept of family has weakened while the development of numerous new constellations has gained a lot of attention. Convention sees family as a nuclear social formation, where heterosexual parents raise their children well. This view attests to the potential for healthy functioning in a variety of family arrangements, and to the stability of these social environments. In the turmoil of our rapidly changing world, the value of system orientation is changing and questions are being raised over what is an ordinary landscape of family life, its constellations and optimal functioning. This article raises family-relevant issues and discusses social pedagogy in family social work, particularly related to social care in Sweden intended for socially vulnerable populations such as the elderly, members of minority ethnic groups, and persons with disabilities suffering from discrimination and social exclusion. It is concluded that – in these populations – the family constellation, be it traditional or modern, is not really the issue, since public social care service constructions have mostly replaced traditional caring relations within families with leveling institutional structures. The social pedagogy in family social work professional practice is conducted using socio-ecological approaches for assessment, treatment and service delivery, for the improvement of individual wellbeing referred to as the individual, social and sociopolitical life-world context.

Although community organizing as a method of social work began to develop in Ukraine in the 1990s, but unlike individual and group social work, the attempts to introduce it into the activities of social welfare institutions and non-governmental organizations were unsystematic and not very successful. The aim of the article is to determine the possibilities of Polish experience of community social work implementation in Ukraine, taking into account the ongoing reform of local self-government. The study, the results of which are presented in the article, was designed as a so-called desk research and based on the results of the comparative analysis of Ukrainian and Polish scientific publications, documents, official websites, etc. The historical background of community social work development in Ukraine is outlined, the analysis of Ukrainian legal acts regarding norms and principles on community organizing is conducted. The article provides an overview of Ukrainian concepts and models of community social work. Particular attention is paid to the possibilities of Polish experience’ application, while implementing community organizing into practice of social welfare institutions as well as of NGOs. Possible structural and institutional changes related to the implementation of community organizing in social work practice and its benefits for the revitalization programs were analyzed. Polish experience of establishing a nationwide circle of community social work professionals was described. The author concludes that the challenges and barriers arising before community social work in both countries are quite similar and assumes that it is reasonable to take into account Polish experience, while implementing community organizing in Ukrainian realities.

The article represents a part of a master thesis research project carried out at Klaipeda university. Concepts of biological, emotional, and procedural parenting obligations were utilised to analyse the issues of social work support for adoptive families. Procedural and emotional components were found to raise the biggest challenges. Although fostering and adoption mean raising a child deprived of parental care and usually needing additional help, social work support is mostly oriented towards fostering families. Therefore, social work support for adoptive parents while rather intensive in preparing the necessary documentation, initial training and matching of a family and a child, basically stops after the child arrives in a family. After that support remains purely voluntary and occasional. Research results show that the adoption process needs to be improved by revising training programmes, enhancing inter-institutional communication, and enriching the information provided for adoptive parents. The current procedures are seen as inefficient by social workers and adoptive parents.

The intensity of the development of voluntary service will be in the future a road on which the main aims of social work will be realized by helping people in need. A series of tax reliefs and exemptions will be mainly the consequence of connecting this type of activity with business. A system created in this way will allow to help transfer a stream of money which will build an essential pillar for the social activity. Costs borne by voluntary service were lower and still will be lower than costs of strictly institutionalised organisations. Moreover, this primal idea, for which above mentioned voluntary service was set up, will be retained. One cannot also exclude such a situation when voluntary service makes up an alternative form of social activity for many people. Because for them the political activity which was discredited many times is not possible to accept. The more often a political scene will be the arena which will be losing credibility and confidence, the more often and wider will develop nongovernmental patterns of social activity including voluntary ones at every level of the organization of society. Social structures have not worked out any different alternative and it is necessary to suppose that they will never work it out. The lack of social activity, and at the same time a lack of development of voluntary service as an alternative for strongly formalised solutions is threatened with self-destruction of social structures, and in the consequence dismantling of democratic systems as a result of a decline in their efficiency.

The aim of the article is to show the presence of the concepts of interdisciplinarity, multidisciplinarity and heterogeneity in scientific texts in the field of social work, to compare the methodological status of social pedagogy and social work as areas of scientific knowledge also created thanks to interdisciplinary research, and to propose the postulate of the superiority of the pedagogical epistemological and methodological perspective in building theoretical foundations. Social work. It was pointed out that social pedagogy, both in the historical, institutional and subject and content aspects, is closely related to the basics of social work. Taking into account the scope of issues analyzed by social work and its methodological and historical conditions, a structured way of understanding the concept of interdisciplinarity of social work and locating it in the area of social pedagogy was proposed, calling the process of this location subdisciplinarization of social work. The problems discussed in the article are of a meta-theoretical and meta-methodological nature, and the main source of the research are texts on the basics of pedagogy and social work.

In the article the concepts of “refugee” and “internally displaced person” are differentiated, information on the number of IDPs depending on the region of the country and the problem of calculating the real number of internal migrants are provided and analyzed. The authors highlight the advantages and disadvantages of the current state of social work with IDPs (for example, the existence of a Strategy for the Integration of Internally Displaced Persons and the implementation of long-term solutions for internal displacement, which identified the main problems of IDPs and general solutions). Government agencies are not flexible enough to create a comprehensive assistance system. A significant part of the work to help refugees is undertaken by volunteers and NGOs, partly supported by international partners. The authors also point out the areas of social work with IDPs, its purpose and objectives, methods, forms and principles of work of social educators with IDPs.

This paper explores the issues of current achievements in the field of the constructivist social work with the family, as well as presents a new perspective on the use of constructivist thought in this area. The constructivist approach was particularly developed in the 1970s. Still, it remains a concept that strongly influences the process of helping the family. Numerous constructivist-oriented methods of working with the family were developed in Europe and the United States; they also inspired Polish social work. The solution-centered approach is the most widespread approach to the constructivist school of thought in Poland. In addition, among a wide range of these concepts we can distinguish: constructive social work by Nigel Parton and Patrick O'Byrne, strengths-based social work by Ann Weick, Charles Rapp, Patrick W. Sullivan, Walter Kisthardt, Dennis Saleebey, the concept of positive practice by Gary Clapton and strengths-based work models (FGC, VIT). Researchers of social work less frequently refer to positions that fall within the current of systemic (operational) constructivism by Niklas Luhmann. The analysis undertaken in the article aims to show the ways of (re) defining the helping process, as well as the role of partners involved in this process in the theories of Heinz von Foerster and Niklas Luhmann.

This article is an introduction to the topic of the axiology in a social work. A social work, as a professional, supportive and pro-social activity, appeals to and aspires to the realization of values. The purpose of this study, based on the literature, is to show the essence of responsibility in a social work. This category should be considered from the perspective of the participants in the social relationship − the social worker and the client of social assistance services. Such angle of looking enables us to recognize responsibility as not only theoretical but also practical problem.

The paper addresses the issues relating to the education and socialization of children living in the culture of poverty, i.e. the situation when the privation affecting the family is not merely a convergence of many incidents, but it becomes a long-lasting experience which results in generational encumbrance. The consequences of such a situation are noticeable in many spheres of children’s and adolescents’ lives, particularly at home, school and among peers. The main purpose of the paper is to indicate educational problems of children living in poverty and describe the areas which impede socialization and educational interventions. The paper highlights the value of education as a real chance to break the cycle of generational poverty stemming from the culture of privation. It also presents school as an institution which reinforces inequalities, and family – as an institution which socializes to poverty. The article contains indications on social work with children from poor families. The paper contains research analyses performed based on such sources as “Memoirs of the Unemployed,” published in Poland in 2003–2006 (5 volumes) and in 1933. The analyses undertaken in the paper are referred to the concept of the culture of poverty proposed by Oscar Lewis.

In the education of social workers, it is particularly important to seek working methods that provide to experience values which define the foundations of professional action. The authors of the article approve the personalistic philosophy as a theoretical basis of educational work, the practice of which is based on the cooperation of academic staff and students, striving for partnership, open dialogue and experiencing personal subjectivity. Nevertheless, the essence of the issue is to search for the content of education, which refers not only to contemporary social issues, but also to their historical conditions and correlates. The context for the article is a reflection on the history of 20th century eugenics, with particular emphasis on the extermination of nearly a quarter of a million people with mental illness and disabilities performed by the German Nazi. It is difficult, without studying the times in which the history derailed, to fully understand the social responsibility of people who are particularly vulnerable and exposed to social non-recognition and damage. The curriculum of social workers’ education at the Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow has included the space of the Clinical Hospital in Krakow's Kobierzyn, where, in cooperation with the Institute of Therapy and Social Education - the Association, an educational project under the name of Axiological Walk in Kobierzyn is being implemented. The article is based on reflection on axiological education in the light of evaluation of the aforementioned project.

Professional support for elderly people requires preparation to provide assistance in the face of a health loss, including oncological diseases, the risk of which increases especially at this stage of human development. A social worker asked to help a person who is struggling with an oncological disease needs to have a broad psychological, sociological and pedagogical knowledge. Working by applying the individual case method, a social worker focuses their support actions on a direct impact on the person and their social environment. Generally speaking, the purpose of the case work method is to strengthen the individual, raising their energy and internal abilities through a consciously directed process of individual work with the person, and (if the situation requires it) to extend the support by organising additional help from the specialised institutions , appropriate for solving a given problem. The theoretical background for the effective implementation of the case work method at the stage of diagnosis, then preparation of an assistance plan and implementation of planned intervention activities in the area of assistance to the elderly patients with an oncological disease, may be the concept of A. Maslow. It turns out that the usefulness of this theoretical concept has been repeatedly verified in practice, in processes of identifying the needs of seniors and planning interventions by social workers when dealing with the extremely difficult experience of an oncological disease in late adulthood. The advantage of the theoretical background discussed is that it indicates specific areas of biopsychosocial functioning, which requires concentration and diagnostic sensitivity of social workers in contact with a senior person that goes beyond the standard assessment of the client needs. The aim of this article is to bring closer the theoretical basis for diagnostic and intervention actions that can be undertaken by a social worker providing support to the seniors submitted to oncological treatment.

XX wieku.

In the last half-century, there has been a revolution in the way contemporary society perceives supports, and treats people with disabilities, and interacts with them. The previous models of working with such people used in social work have been replaced with new, innovative approaches. Professional social workers will have to face the new challenge consisting in the right of people with disabilities to self-determination.
W ostatnim półwieczu we współczesnym społeczeństwie doszło do rewolucji w sposobie postrzegania, wspierania i leczenia osób z niepełnosprawnością oraz współdziałania z nimi. Dotychczasowe modele pracy z osobami z niepełnosprawnością obecne w pracy socjalnej straciły swoją rację bytu na rzecz nowych, innowacyjnych podejść. Profesjonalni pracownicy socjalni będą musieli sprostać nowemu wyzwaniu jakim jest prawo do samostanowienia osób z niepełnosprawnością.

Times we live in make us question what is going to happen with the world after the pandemic. The struggle against COVID-19 and changes produced will have impact on the mind of many people. Some lose their relatives, who they cannot bury. Others live in a constant state of fear about their health and future living. The world will never be the same. People will never be as they were before this traumatic event. The invisible enemy – coronavirus – will leave a lasting mark on their memory. Many will need support which can be provided by specialist counselling. Many will struggle with a trauma, which will make the return to “normality” impossible for a long time. A traumatic experience is a psychological trauma suffered by a person and caused by a strong, sudden stimulus. This stimulus is intensive enough to cause changes in the areas of soma, psyche and polis, and it also directly threatens health or life of a person. People after a traumatic experience require a complex assistance to return to their normal functioning. Currently, this stimulus is a deadly virus. The article presents the role of the specialist counselling in the area of social work with a person and their family after a traumatic experience.

Opis:
The notion of a method is not identical with the notion of model of social work, although different models assume different methods of work. Many models of social work have been created. One can mention, for example, the psychosocial model (based on the assumption that the cause of the problems of an individual are unconscious, unrealized conflicts and unfulfilled, subconscious needs; the solution of the problems is sought through an analysis of events and experiences from the past), problemic, structural, model of modification of behaviours; group therapy, resocialization model, crisis model etc. Thus, in the functional model, one puts the emphasis on building the relation with the ward, maximal use of the time given and avoiding diagnostic categories as useless in social work. The problem-oriented model bases on the assumption that problems are an inevitable element of life, their solution is sought through analysing present factors, the main emphasis is put on the ward's involvement in the solving of the problem, the task of the social worker is determining the ward's subjective attitude to the problem and motivating him to action. The structural model is based on the assuption that the individual's problems are the effect of a definite social structure and they do not result from personal neglect, and the basis of help is support for the client and his immediate social environment. The model of behaviour modification, based on psychological behaviourism, assumes that through employing knowledge about the mechanisms of learning one can change attitudes and the way the individual reacts49. It is worth mentioning also models which integrate social work with individuals, groups and communities. An example of such a model is the systemic model, in the frames of which one can differentiate several variants, e. g. ecological, life model, competence model). In the systemic model one emphasizes the improvement of relations between the ward and his or her social environment through seeking a system of social support, rejecting the view that the ward's situation can be improved through actions directed exclusively onto him or her or their environment methods.

Social work is an occupation, in which, one helps other people for free. The main purpose of this help is to improve the social function of the individual, who because of difficult situation, is unable to improve his/her status on his/her own. Future of the individual depends (partly or completely) on the help offered by the social worker [Praca socjalna, 2002: 14]. The goal of social work is to stop the process of social exclusion (marginalization) by deleting its causes. This way of understanding the term of social work should be distinguished from the term of social help, which helps citizens mainly financially. Sometimes, in practice, it is quite hard to distinguish social work from social help because one of the goals of social help is social, and professional stimulation of people who are socially excluded from the society due to poverty, what in fact, covers with social work.
