This paper presents a validation study of a new questionnaire of self-control as an individual trait. The questionnaire has two parallel versions, one based on self-reports (AS-36) and another one based on informant reports (AS-36-3). Each version consists of three subscales, called Inhibition (12 items), Switching (12 items), and Goal Monitoring (12 items). Eight samples of participants (N = 935 altogether) took part in the validation study. Both versions obtained satisfactory indices of internal consistency, assessed with Cronbach’s alpha and split-half coefficients. Selfcontrol assessed with this scale proved to be entirely independent of general intelligence. However, AS-36 and AS-36-3 scores tended to correlate with other self-report measures of trait self control, such as Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone’s (2004) self-control scale. We conclude that AS-36 is a valid and reliable tool, suitable for assessment of self-control in both research and diagnostic settings.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of the two methods of statistical quality control of products. That two methods differ from each other mainly by a way of determining a subset of products subjected to inspection. The first of the two methods, hereinafter referred to as the completely random method, is to draw a certain number of products for control of the entire products population. The second method, called the method of drawing from partitions, is a pre-split across the specific products population into smaller parts, called partitions, and then create a representation (sample) of the products subject to control by drawing the products from each partition. The main result of this study is to determine the conditions for which the effectiveness of quality control methods with drawing from partitions is not less than the efficiency of the method with fully random drawing, whereby the efficiency criterion is the likelihood of the event, consisting in the fact that there is at least one incorrect product among the drawn products. The considerations were illustrated by numerical examples, designed to compare the effectiveness of the analyzed methods of quality control.

This paper presents an overview of some recent results concerning the emerging theory of minimax LQG control for uncertain systems with a relative entropy constraint uncertainty description. This is an important new robust control system design methodology providing minimax optimal performance in terms of a quadratic cost functional. The paper first considers some standard uncertainty descriptions to motivate the relative entropy constraint uncertainty description. The minimax LQG problem under consideration is further motivated by analysing the basic properties of relative entropy. The paper then presents a solution to a worst case control system performance problem which can be generalized to the minimax LQG problem. The solution to this minimax LQG control problem is found to be closely connected to the problem of risk-sensitive optimal control.

Opis:
Maximum Torque Control (MTC) is a new method applied for control of induction motor drives. The drive is controlled by dc voltage supplying a converter in the range below nominal speed and by a field that weakens for a speed range above the nominal speed. As a consequence, the control is quite similar to the control of a classical separately excited dc motor. This control method could be explained as a kind of simplification of Direct Torque Control (DTC), because the switching scheme is the same as for the DTC, but the variable responsible for a torque control is constantly set for “torque increase”. This kind of control of induction motor drive is simpler than DTC because torque values need not be estimated. The proposed control method offers very good performance for 3-phase induction motors and requires smaller switching frequency in comparison to DTC and Field Oriented Control (FOC). The application of the control is widely demonstrated for a 3-phase 315 kW, 6 kV motor drive by use of computer simulation.

Opis:
In this paper we collect some results about boundary Dirichlet control problems governed by linear partial differential equations. Some differences are found between problems posed on polygonal domains or smooth domains. In polygonal domains some difficulties arise in the corners, where the optimal control is forced to take a value which is independent of the data of the problem. The use of some Sobolev norm of the control in the cost functional, as suggested in the specialized literature as an alternative to the L2 norm, allows to avoid this strange behavior. Here, we propose a new method to avoid this undesirable behavior of the optimal control, consisting in considering a discrete perturbation of the cost functional by using a finite number of controls concentrated around the corners. In curved domains, the numerical approximation of the problem requires the approximation of the domain Ω typically by a polygonal domain Ωh, this introduces some difficulties in comparing the continuous and the discrete controls because of their definition on different domains Γ and Γh, respectively. We complete the existing recent analysis of these problems by proving the error estimates for a full discretization of the control problem. Finally, some numerical results are provided to compare the different alternatives and to confirm the theoretical predictions.

Vibrating plates can be used in Active Noise Control (ANC) applications as active barriers or as secondary sources replacing classical loudspeakers. The system with vibrating plates, especially when nonlinear MFC actuators are used, is nonlinear. The nonlinearity in the system reduces performance of classical feedforward ANC with linear control filters systems, because they cannot cope with harmonics generated by the nonlinearity. The performance of the ANC system can be improved by using nonlinear control filters, such as Artificial Neural Networks or Volterra filters. However, when multiple actuators are mounted on a single plate, which is a common practice to provide effective control of more vibration modes, each actuator should be driven by a dedicated nonlinear control filter. This significantly increases computational complexity of the control algorithm, because adaptation of nonlinear control filters is much more computationally demanding than adaptation of linear FIR filters. This paper presents an ANC system with multiple actuators, which are driven with a single nonlinear filter. To avoid destructive interference of vibrations generated by different actuators the control signal is filtered by appropriate separate linear filters. The control system is experimentally verified and obtained results are reported.

This paper deals with the efficient control of the pH process. Considering the PI + gain scheduling (PI+GS) controller as the benchmark and its control performance as the base, we investigate experimentally the overall improvement in the control performance obtained by the application of the Balance-Based Adaptive Controller (B-BAC), which requires only the measurement data of the flow rates and pH values. The improvement of the control efficiency is investigated not only in terms of the controlled variable performance but also in terms of the manipulated variable performance considered as the considerable control cost. The application of the B-BAController can ensure lower controlled pH variability at the price of the control effort similar to the PI+GS approach and thus it can improve the overall efficiency of pH control. The second important contribution is the experimental validation of the very simple and intuitive tuning procedure for the B-BAController.

In this paper, both attitude and altitude controls of a Quad-Rotor type MAV are discussed and analyzed. To stabilize the attitude, one order memory based controller is selected, the performance of which is independent of the detail model information, leading to enhanced robustness. While for the altitude, a Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controller is proposed. The experimental results of the real flight demonstrate the stability and robustness of the controllers.

The paper presents the interval arithmetic-based method of designing a discrete-time closed-loop anti-sway crane control system based on the fuzzy interpolation of linear controller parameters. The interval analysis of a closed-loop control system characteristic polynomial coefficients deviation from their nominal values is proposed to define a minimum number of fuzzy sets on the scheduling variables universe of discourse and to determine the distribution of triangular-shaped membership functions parameters, which satisfy the acceptable range of performances deterioration in the presence of the system’s parameters variation. The effectiveness of this method was proved in experiments conducted using the PAC system on the laboratory scaled overhead crane.

The influence of the cross-paths on successful global noise reduction is considered. Multiple vibration actuators are installed on each of the casing walls. An adaptive control strategy based on the Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm is used to update control filter parameters. A problem of sparse optimal boundary control for a semilinear parabolic partial differential equation is considered, where pointwise bounds on the control and mixed pointwise control-state constraints are given. A standard quadratic objective functional is to be minimized that includes a Tikhonov regularization term and the L1-norm of the control accounting for the sparsity. Applying a recent linearization theorem, we derive first-order necessary optimality conditions in terms of a variational inequality under linearized mixed control state constraints. Based on this preliminary result, a Lagrange multiplier rule with bounded and measurable multipliers is derived and sparsity results on the optimal control are demonstrated.

Inspired by the multi-agent systems, we propose a model-based distributed control architecture for robotic manipulators. Here, each of the joints of the manipulator is controlled using a joint level controller and these controllers account for the dynamic coupling between the links by interacting among themselves. Apart from the reduced computational time due to distributed computation of the control law at the joint levels, the knowledge of dynamics is fully utilized in the proposed control scheme, unlike the decentralized control schemes proposed in the literature. While the proposed distributed control architecture is useful for a general serial-link manipulator, in this paper, we focus on planar manipulators with revolute joints. We provide a simple model-based distributed control scheme as an illustration of the proposed distributed model-based control architecture. Based on this scheme, distributed model-based controller has been designed for a planar 3R manipulator and simulations results are presented to demonstrate that the manipulator successfully tracks the desired trajectory.

This paper presents the control designs for an autonomous forklift vehicle that drive the vehicle from an initial configuration to a final one. Three stabilization controls, which are chained-form time-varying control, sigma-transformed discontinuous control, and navigation-variables-based discontinuous control, for a forklift vehicle are compared by simulations. The sigma-transformed and navigation-variables-based discontinuous controls provide fast convergence motions from an initial to a final configuration, while the time-varying-based control provides oscillatory motion and slow convergence. The sigma-transformed discontinuous control has a set of discontinuous points in which, from a practical point of view, the control signals can blow up if a vehicle enters the set. The navigation-variables-based control, which also has a discontinuous point at the final configuration, does not produce blown up control signals since its boundedness nature. Discussion on the implementation of control algorithm is elucidated for the three stabilization controls for the forklift vehicle.

Opis:
The paper presents the model of corporate culture diagnostics for simulation in management control. Three approaches (symbolic, cognitive, and systematic) used for the diagnosis of corporate culture have been outlined. There have been provided 3 levels (basic underlying assumptions, espoused beliefs and values, and visual artifacts) to evaluate the state of corporate culture in a comprehensive way. Two methods of assessment (standard and dynamic) have been proposed for selection. 19 groups of indicators and 42 defined indicators that allow diagnosing corporate culture comprehensively have been provided. Based on the sample of 11 Ukrainian companies, the results suggest that application of the management control model provides a high quality informational base for decision-making on the trends and prospects of development, addressing problematic issues and weaknesses of the current corporate culture and use of its operating conditions and strengths to improve the overall efficiency of the company.

The paper describes a nonlinear controller design technique applied to a servo drive in the presence of hard state constraints. The approach presented is based on nonlinear state-space transformation and adaptive backstepping. It allows us to impose hard constraints on the state variables directly and to achieve asymptotic tracking of any reference trajectory inside the constraints, despite unknown plant parameters. Two control schemes (with and without integral action) are derived, investigated and then compared. Several examples demonstrate the main features of the design procedure and prove that it may be applied in case of motion control problems in electric drive automation.

Opis:
Offset-free model predictive control (MPC) algorithms for nonlinear state-space process models, with modeling errors and under asymptotically constant external disturbances, is the subject of the paper. The main result of the paper is the presentation of a novel technique based on constant state disturbance prediction. It was introduced originally by the author for linear state-space models and is generalized to the nonlinear case in the paper. First the case with measured state is considered, in this case the technique allows to avoid disturbance estimation at all. For the cases with process outputs measured only and thus the necessity of state estimation, the technique allows the process state estimation only - as opposed to conventional approach of extended process-and-disturbance state estimation. This leads to simpler design with state observer/filter of lower order and, moreover, without the need of a decision of disturbance placement in the model (under certain restrictions), as in the conventional approach. A theoretical analysis of the proposed algorithm is provided, under applicability conditions which are weaker than in the conventional approach. The presented theory is illustrated by simulation results of nonlinear processes, showing competitiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Quality Control (QC) is an active process that detects defects in a product claimed to be ready for delivery, so it can be said that QC is the key to maintaining quality. Although quantitative quality control methods based on numbers and measurements provide tangible implications with more reliable results, qualitative measurements are also important for the quality control process. When manufacturers apply appropriate quantitative and qualitative quality control methods in their production processes, they can identify problems in products and produce appropriate solutions. In this research, quality control practices are examined and their effects on the sustainability of quality are investigated. In addition, the functioning of Quality Control methods is revealed, and the usage areas and forms of the methods are examined with examples. While evaluating the Quality and Quality Control methods, which are discussed in a wide range, other titles under the title of Quality are also included within the framework of this study. In today's conditions, the improvement of concepts such as time, less cost, and quality production that gains in value in the production process is directly related to the adequacy of quality control. The aim of this paper is to solve the quality problems in the production process of manufacturing organizations by investigating various technical quality control methods used to improve all these concepts. By eliminating the quality problems and minimizing the losses, the profitability level of the organization will be increased, along with this, the quality will be improved and become sustainable.

In the present time, landing energy dissipation process in aviation shock absorber design is optimized for the most demanding, but still safe, landing scenario (reserve energy landing conditions). Most of the current solutions are based on a fixed hole (orifice) or a set of holes regulating hydraulic fluid flow in the shock absorber. This approach although safe provides no optimization of the forces acting on the fuselage in different (less energetic than limit energy) conditions. Due to the progress in hydraulic flow control, it is possible to design and control a proper system for extended optimization of the landing process energy dissipation. The complete system contains two parts, one of which is a direct flow executive electro-mechanical system and second of which is an electronic control system. The electronic control system directly manages executive system via a set of inputs, thus creating proper output signals for the optimal flow control. In this article, the author presents the idea of the computer control part of the adaptive hydraulic flow control system. The author describes a set of possible control input and output signals both external and internal, from the landing gear reference system, characterizing their role in the landing process. The author also defines possible control algorithms selected to fit the assumptions of the adaptive landing gear system. Finally, the author presents a proposal for the laboratory grade control system for future testing of the assumptions described in this article.

In this paper sliding mode control systems are considered and a new technique to attenuate chattering is proposed. The technique employs simple, first-order dynamical devices, i.e. an integrator or a low-pass filter, to compensate in part for unknown and changing disturbance. As a result of this compensation, the magnitude of the discontinuous control term is essentially reduced. The term does not depend on the admissible disturbance or its change rate, but only on the uncertainty of the disturbance at the initial time t = t[sub o]. The technique proposed in this paper attenuates the undesirable chattering without any deterioration of the system performance.

In the paper, a comparative analysis of control algorithms in the temperature control system for spray booths is presented. Additionally, basic technological limits which may have some influence on the quality of control are described. From technological point of view, a typical spray booth operates in two modes i.e. coating and drying, which are related to different temperature work points. In practice, it is the main reason of changes in plant dynamics, precisely changes in dynamical parameters of the spray booth. The authors analyzed other technological factors which might disturb the temperature inside the booth and finally make a painted covering worse or even useless. The main idea was to find robust control algorithms, mainly for temperature control, which make the process stable in any working point. In the final part of the paper, selected real time experiments are presented to show typical working modes of the spray booth and to proof the robustness of the developed and implemented control algorithm.

The aim of this work is to design a robust predictive attitude controller when the disturbance is not known and it is modelled based on the stochastic theory and not directly from the environment and its laws. The paper starts with a brief introduction about the interest of attitude control, the state of the art, the limitations and the objectives of the research work. Then it moves on the control model chosen for the work. The main part is related to the modelling of the stochastic disturbance and the actuation of the controller. The results obtained match the initial idea about the capability of the controller to work under an unknown disturbance torque. Indeed, the graphical results show, for all the different conditions considered, that the required attitude is always reached, meaning that the aim of this work was achieved.

The paper reports the design and tests of the planar autopilot navigation system in the three-degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) plane (surge, sway and yaw) for a ship. The aim of the tests was to check the improved maneuverability of the ship in open waters using the improved nonlinear control algorithm, developed based on the sliding mode control theory for the ship-trajectory tracking problem of under-actuated ships with static constraints, actuator saturation, and parametric uncertainties. With the integration of the simple increment feedback control law, the dynamic control strategy was developed to fulfill the under-actuated tracking and stabilization objectives. In addition, the LOS (line of sight) guidance system was applied to control the motion path, whereas the sliding mode controller was used to emulate the rudder angle and propeller rotational speed control. Firstly, simulation tests were performed to verify the validity of the basic model and the tracking control algorithm. Subsequently, full scale maneuverability tests were done with a novel container ship, equipped with trajectory tracking control and sliding mode controller algorithm, to check the dynamic stability performance of the ship. The results of the theoretical and numerical simulation on a training ship verify the invariability and excellent robustness of the proposed controller, which: effectively eliminates system chattering, solves the problem of lateral drift of the ship, and maintains the following of the trajectory while simultaneously achieving global stability and robustness.

An iterative method for time optimal control of a general type of dynamic systems is proposed, subject to limited control inputs. This method uses the indirect solution of open-loop optimal control problem. The necessary conditions for optimality are derived from Pontryagin's minimum principle and the obtained equations lead to a nonlinear two point boundary value problem (TPBVP). Since there are many difficulties in finding the switching points and in solving the resulted TPBVP, a simple iterative method based on solving the minimum energy solution is proposed. The method does not need finding the switching point so that the resulted TPBVP can be solved by usual algorithms such as shooting and collocation. Also, since the solution of TPBVPs is sensitive to initial guess, a short procedure for making the proper initial guess is introduced. To this end, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated using time optimal solution of some systems: harmonic oscillator, robotic arm, double spring-mass problem with coulomb friction and F-8 aircraft.

A hyperjerk system is a dynamical system, which is modelled by an nth order ordinary differential equation with n ≥ 4 describing the time evolution of a single scalar variable. Equivalently, using a chain of integrators, a hyperjerk system can be modelled as a system of n first order ordinary differential equations with n ≥ 4. In this research work, a 4-D novel hyperchaotic hyperjerk system with two nonlinearities has been proposed, and its qualitative properties have been detailed. The novel hyperjerk system has a unique equilibrium at the origin, which is a saddle-focus and unstable. The Lyapunov exponents of the novel hyperjerk system are obtained as L1 = 0.14219, L2 = 0.04605, L3 = 0 and L4 = −1.39267. The Kaplan-Yorke dimension of the novel hyperjerk system is obtained as DKY = 3.1348. Next, an adaptive controller is designed via backstepping control method to stabilize the novel hyperjerk chaotic system with three unknown parameters. Moreover, an adaptive controller is designed via backstepping control method to achieve global synchronization of the identical novel hyperjerk systems with three unknown parameters. MATLAB simulations are shown to illustrate all the main results derived in this research work on a novel hyperjerk system.

Rozważane są przede wszystkim najbardziej efektywne obliczeniowo algorytmy MPC-NPL (NPL - Nonlinear Prediction and Linearization), w dwóch wersjach: z optymalizacją QP (Quadratic Programming) z ograniczeniami i z jawną optymalizacją bez ograniczeń i spełnieniem ograniczeń nierównościowych a posteriori.
The subject of the article are predictive control algorithms (of MPC type - Model Predictive Control) for rigid manipulator arms. MPC with a state-space model and with the latest disturbance and modeling error suppression technique was applied, which avoids dynamic disturbance modeling or resorting to additional disturbance cancellation techniques, such as SMC. First of all, the most computationally efficient MPC-NPL (Nonlinear Prediction and Linearization) algorithms are considered, in two versions: the first with constrained QP (Quadratic Programming) optimization and the second with explicit (analytical) optimization without constraints and satisfying a posteriori inequality constraints. For all considered algorithms, a comprehensive simulation analysis was carried out for a direct drive manipulator, with two kinds of disturbances: external and parametric. The obtained results were compared with those for the well-known CTC-PID algorithm (CTC - Computer Torque Control), showing better control quality with MPC algorithms. In addition, the influence of the length of the sampling period and of the computational delay on control quality was investigated, which is important for model-based algorithms with fast sampling.

The problem of cooperation of Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms with steady-state economic optimisation is investigated in this paper. It is particularly important when the dynamics of disturbances is comparable with the dynamics of the process, since in such a case the classical hierarchical multilayer structure is likely to be not efficient and give the economic yield smaller than expected. This is because the economic nonlinear optimisation problem cannot be then solved on-line to update the optimal operating point as frequently as needed. On the other hand, simple target set-point optimisation based on linear models can be also insufficiently accurate. This paper introduces approximate formulations of the target set-point optimisation problem which tightly cooperates with the MPC and is solved as frequently as the MPC controller executes. Linear, linear-quadratic and piecewise-linear formulations are discussed, tuning guidelines are also given.

We analyze regularizations of a class of linear-quadratic optimal control problems with control appearing linearly. It is shown that if the optimal control is bang-bang or if a coercivity condition for the state variables is satisfied, the solutions are continuous functions of the regularization parameter. Combining error estimates for Euler discretizations of the regularized problems with those for the regularization error, we choose the regularization parameter in dependence of the meshsize to obtain optimal convergence rates for the discrete solutions. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical findings.

The control problem with random horizon at finie number of events is investigated in this paper, where the general aim of control is the stabilization (in mean square sense) of linear system at minimum cost. This problem is reduced to the task of optima control with established finite horizon. Moreover, the differences between stabilization with fixed and random horizons are also given. To illustrate those differences a numerical example is included.

The main part of the paper is a multivariate surveillance procedure based on the division on two stages: Phase I (phase of stabilization) and Phase II (phase of monitoring). After describing some elements of multivariate statistical process control implementation (considered from the methodological point of view) author introduced two most popular control charts used in industrial practice: control charts for individual observations and for means. The article is summarized by some author's conclusions concerning popularity of multivariate surveillance and future directions of his work.

Numerical solution of PDE optimal control problems involving affine pointwise control constraints is investigated. Optimality conditions are derived and a semi-smooth Newton method is presented. Global and local superlinear convergence of the method are obtained for linear problems. Differently from box constraints, in the case of general affine constraints a proper weighting of the control costs is essential for superlinear convergence of semi-smooth Newton methods. This is also demonstrated numerically by controlling the two-dimensional Stokes equations with different kinds of affine constraints.

Opis:
The active noise-reducing casing developed and promoted by the authors in recent publications have multiple advantages over other active noise control methods. When compared to classical solutions, it allows for obtaining global reduction of noise generated by a device enclosed in the casing. Moreover, the system does not require loudspeakers, and much smaller actuators attached to the casing walls are used instead. In turn, when compared to passive casings, the walls can be made thinner, lighter and with much better thermal transfer than sound-absorbing materials. For active noise control a feedforward structure is usually used. However, it requires an in-advance reference signal, which can be difficult to be acquired for some applications. Fortunately, usually the dominant noise components are due to rotational operations of the enclosed device parts, and thus they are tonal and multitonal. Therefore, it can be adequately predicted and the Internal Model Control structure can be used to benefit from algorithms well developed for feedforward systems. The authors have already tested that approach for a rigid casing, where interaction of the walls was significantly reduced. In this paper the idea is further explored and applied for a light-weight casing, more frequently met in practice, where each vibrating wall of the casing influences all the other walls. The system is verified in laboratory experiments.

The paper deals with an optimal control problem in a dynamical system described by a linear differential equation with the Caputo fractional derivative. The goal of control is to minimize a Bolza-type cost functional, which consists of two terms: the first one evaluates the state of the system at a fixed terminal time, and the second one is an integral evaluation of the control on the whole time interval. In order to solve this problem, we propose to reduce it to some auxiliary optimal control problem in a dynamical system described by a first-order ordinary differential equation. The reduction is based on the representation formula for solutions to linear fractional differential equations and is performed by some linear transformation, which is called the informational image of a position of the original system and can be treated as a special prediction of a motion of this system at the terminal time. A connection between the original and auxiliary problems is established for both open-loop and feedback (closed-loop) controls. The results obtained in the paper are illustrated by examples.

Directional response of a vehicle implies changing its direction when sustaining lateral acceleration while moving on the road. From this response, the vehicle's explicit capabilities as well as its contribution to the system performance of the driver/vehicle combination are obtained. In vehicle control literature, handling is often used interchangeably with cornering, turning, or directional response. This paper focuses one aspect of the handling i.e. directional response. Two different controllers, namely a PID controller and a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) are designed in this paper to control the vehicle's steering in a smooth lane change maneuver. The performances of the aforesaid two controllers have been studied extensively in this paper. For achieving an improved path tracking and directional response, parameters of both the PID and FLC have been tuned and their performances have been compared. Further, the effect of changing the scale factors in the fuzzy logic approach to obtaining directional response is presented. To validate the above two control performances, a nonlinear simulation model of a HEV is developed and is used in simulation studies. Both the controllers track the desired directional signal efficiently. Both PID and Fuzzy controllers provide competitive performances. Although with the assumption of all parameters of the vehicle available PID controller exhibits slightly better dynamic performance but in the real-world scenario the fuzzy controller is preferred due to its robustness i.e. it does not depend on the parameters of the vehicle.

An averaging tank with variable filling is a nonlinear multidimensional system and can thus be considered a complex control system. General control objectives of such object include ensuring stability, zero steady-state error, and achieving simultaneously shortest possible settling time and minimal overshoot. The main purpose of this research work was the modeling and synthesis of three control systems for an averaging tank. In order to achieve the intended purpose, in the first step, a mathematical model of the control system was derived. The model was adapted to the form required to design two out of three planned control systems by linearization and reduction of its dimensions, resulting in two system variants. A multivariable proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control system for the averaging tank was developed using optimization for tuning PID controllers. State feedback and output feedback with an integral action control system for the considered control system was designed using a linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) and optimization of weights. A fuzzy control system was designed using the Mamdani inference system. The developed control systems were tested using theMATLAB environment. Finally, the simulation results for each control algorithm (and their variants) were compared and their performance was assessed, as well as the effects of optimization in the case of PID and integral control (IC) systems.

In order to control joints of manipulators with high precision, a position tracking control strategy combining fractional calculus with iterative learning control and sliding mode control is proposed for the control of a single joint of manipulators. Considering the coupling between joints of manipulators, a fractional-order iterative sliding mode crosscoupling control strategy is proposed and the theoretical proof of its progressive stability is given. The paper takes a two-joint manipulator as the research object to verify the control strategy of a single-joint manipulator. The results show that the control strategy proposed in this paper makes the two-joint mechanical arm chatter less and the tracking more accurate. The synchronous control of the manipulator is verified by a three-joint manipulator. The results show that the angular displacement adjustment times of the threejoint manipulator are 0.11 s, 0.31 s and 0.24 s, respectively. 3.25 s > 5 s, 3.15 s of a PD cross-coupling control strategy; 2.85 s, 2.32 s, 4.22 s of a PD iterative cross-coupling control strategy; 0.14 s, 0.33 s, 0.28 s of a fractional-order sliding mode cross-coupling control strategy. The root mean square error of the position error of the designed control strategy is 6.47 × 10−6 rad, 3.69 × 10−4 rad, 6.91 × 10−3 rad, respectively. The root mean square error of the synchronization error is 3.96×10−4 rad, 1.36×10−3 rad, 7.81×10−3 rad, superior to the other three control strategies. The results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Essential ingredients for fault-tolerant control are the ability to represent system behaviour following the occurrence of a fault, and the ability to exploit this representation for deciding control actions. Gaussian processes seem to be very promising candidates for the first of these, and model predictive control has a proven capability for the second. We therefore propose to use the two together to obtain fault-tolerant control functionality. Our proposal is illustrated by several reasonably realistic examples drawn from flight control.

A hierarchical sliding mode control approach is proposed for a class of SIMO under-actuated systems. This class of under-actuated systems is made up of several subsystems. Based on this physical structure, the hierarchical structure of the sliding surfaces is designed as follows. At first, the sliding surface of every subsystem is defined. Then the sliding surface of one subsystem is defined as the first layer sliding surface. The first layer sliding surface is used to construct the second layer sliding surface with the sliding surface of another subsystem. This process continues till the sliding surfaces of the entire subsystems are included. According to the hierarchical structure, the total control law is deduced by the Lyapunov theorem. In theory, the asymptotic stability of the entire system of sliding surfaces is proven and the parameter boundaries of the subsystem sliding surfaces are given. Simulation results show the feasibility of this control method through two typical SIMO under-actuated systems.

Two field experimental trials were carried out in central Italy, in 2005 and 2006, on biomass sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] in order to assess weed control efficacy and selectivity to the crop of some pre- and post-emergence herbicides applied at different doses and in different mixtures. All herbicides showed good selectivity to the crop, although postemergence treatments showed higher transitory phytotoxicity effects than pre-emergence treatments, especially when high temperatures occurred after treatments, decreasing the selectivity of leaf herbicides (i.e. MCPA, 2,4-D, bromoxynil and dicamba). Considering pre-emergence applications, terbuthylazine alone against broadleaves or in mixtures at low doses with s-metolachlor against mixed infestations (grasses + broadleaves), seemed to be the best options to obtain a good selectivity to the sorghum and a high weed control level. Aclonifen showed some limits in terms of weed spectrum and could be recommended only against simplified broadleaf weed infestations without the presence of less susceptible weeds, like Amaranthus retroflexus, Portulaca oleracea and Solanum nigrum. Propachlor seemed not to be advisable due to the low efficacy against all the major broadleaf warmseason weed species in the Mediterranean areas. Considering post-emergence applications, all treatments gave quite similar results in terms of weed control, although, the mixture of terbuthylazine + bromoxynil seemed to be the best option due to bromoxinil’s higher efficacy than other foliar herbicides, such as MCPA, 2,4-D and dicamba, which can increase the efficacy of terbuthylazine alone especially under dry weather conditions. There were no significant differences in sorghum biomass between herbicide treatments, although, the more selective pre-emergence treatments showed, on average, a higher biomass yield value than the less selective post-emergence treatments. For these reasons, biomass values seemed to be more related to herbicide selectivity than to herbicide efficacy, especially in cases of scarce competitiveness of weed flora.

In this paper the stability of a closed-loop cascade control system in the trajectory tracking task is addressed. The considered plant consists of underlying second-order fully actuated perturbed dynamics and the first order system which describes dynamics of the input. The main theoretical result establishes the conditions for Lyapunov stability formulated for the perturbed cascade control structure taking advantage of the active rejection disturbance approach. In particular, limitations imposed on a feasible set of an observer bandwidth are discussed. In order to illustrate characteristics of the closed-loop control system simulation results are presented. Furthermore, the particular implementation of the cascade control algorithm is verified experimentally using a two-axis telescope mount. The obtained results confirm that the considered control strategy can be efficiently applied for a class of mechanical systems when a high position tracking precision is required.

Opis:
The paper is concerned with the presentation and analysis of the Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC) model predictive control algorithm with the representation of the process input trajectories by parametrised sums of Laguerre functions. First the formulation of the DMCL (DMC with Laguerre functions) algorithm is presented. The algorithm differs from the standard DMC one in the formulation of the decision variables of the optimization problem - coefficients of approximations by the Laguerre functions instead of control input values are these variables. Then the DMCL algorithm is applied to two multivariable benchmark problems to investigate properties of the algorithm and to provide a concise comparison with the standard DMC one. The problems with difficult dynamics are selected, which usually leads to longer prediction and control horizons. Benefits from using Laguerre functions were shown, especially evident for smaller sampling intervals.

The paper presents a general approach to mechanical system modification aimed at controlling the steady harmonic vibrations by means of passive and active methods. The relaŹtive decrease of harmonic vibration amplitudes of selected elements of the mechanical system has been chosen as a measure of the quality of the introduced modification. The proposed theoretical method enables to determine the parameters of the system’s dynamic flexibility matrix, which show the most remarkable effect on the dynamic behaviour of the whole system. When active control is considered the method is useful in designing the structure and choosing the parameters of the control system. In certain in cases of self-excited vibration the approach helps examining the elements of the system, most responsible for this kind of excitation.

Position tracking systems for AC drives offering high robustness to external load torques have been presented. A triple-loop cascade control structure was employed where the inner loop is a stator current control loop and the middle loop is a speed control loop based on the forced dynamic control and respecting vector control principles. Two alternative outer position control loop designs both of which respect prescribed dynamics and settling time of position have been developed. The former system prescribes also time constant of the speed control loop while the latter one respects time constant of speed control system developed independently. To enhance the tracking abilities of both control systems the dynamic lag pre-compensator has been included. Case studies of the both position control systems for time near-optimal control and energy near-optimal control have been presented. The tracking performances of the designed control systems were assessed based on comparisons of the experimental responses with the simulated responses of the ideal closed-loop system.

In this paper we consider the problem of efficient control of inventory systems with perishable goods. In the analyzed setting the deteriorating stock at a distribution center used to fulfill unknown, time-varying demand is replenished with delay from a supply source. The challenging issue is to achieve the high service level with minimum costs when the replenishment orders are procured with lead-time delay spanning multiple review periods. On the contrary to the typical heuristic approaches, we apply formal methodology based on discrete-time sliding-mode (SM) control. The proposed SM controller with the sliding plane selected for a dead-beat scheme ensures that the maximum service level is obtained in the system with arbitrary delay and any bounded demand pattern. In order to account for the supplier capacity limitations in the systems with input constraints, we also develop an alternative control strategy based on reaching law. Both controllers achieve a given service level with smaller holding costs and reduced order-to-demand variance ratio as compared to the classical order-up-to policy.

Considering the importance of gear systems as one of the important vibration and noise sources in power transmission systems, an active control for suppressing gear vibration is presented in this paper. A gear bearing model is developed and used to design an active control gear-bearing system. Two possible configurations of control system are designed based on active bearing and active gear-shaft torsional coupling to control and reduce the disturbance affecting system components. The controller for computing the actuation force is designed by using the H-infinity control approach. Simulation results indicate that the desired controller can efficiently be used for vibration control of gear bearing systems.

The model predictive current control (MPCC) of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is highly dependent on motor parameters, and a parameter mismatch will cause the system performance degradation. Therefore, a strategy based on an internal model control (IMC) observer is proposed to correct the mismatch parameters. Firstly, based on the MPCC strategy of the PMSM, according to the dynamic model of the PMSM in a rotating orthogonal coordinate system, -axis and -axis current IMC observers are designed, and the stability derivation is carried out. It is proved that the observer can estimate -axis and -axis disturbance components caused by a parameter mismatch without static error. Then, the estimated disturbance component is compensated for by the reference voltage prediction expression. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified in two different conditions. The experimental results show that the proposed control strategy can effectively compensate for the parameter mismatch disturbance in MPCC for PMSM, improve the dynamic and static performance of the system, and improve the robustness of the system. voltage prediction expression. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified in two different conditions. When the traditional multi-motor speed synchronous control strategy is applied to the vacuum pump system, it is prone to the drawbacks of large synchronization error. In this paper, a simplified mathematical model of the motor for a vacuum pump is established and the transfer function is introduced, which weakens the multivariable, strong coupling and nonlinear characteristics of the motor system. According to the basic principle of the relative coupling control strategy, the neural network Proportion Integration Differentiation (PID) is introduced as a speed compensator in this system. It effectively improves the synchronization and anti-interference ability of the multi motor

This paper presents a new seven-term 3-D jerk chaotic system with two cubic nonlinearities. The phase portraits of the novel jerk chaotic system are displayed and the qualitative properties of the jerk system are described. The novel jerk chaotic system has a unique equilibrium at the origin, which is a saddle-focus and unstable. The Lyapunov exponents of the novel jerk chaotic system are obtained as L1 = 0:2974, L2 = 0 and L3 = −3:8974. Since the sum of the Lyapunov exponents of the jerk chaotic system is negative, we conclude that the chaotic system is dissipative. The Kaplan-Yorke dimension of the new jerk chaotic system is found as DKY = 2:0763. Next, an adaptive backstepping controller is designed to globally stabilize the new jerk chaotic system with unknown parameters. Moreover, an adaptive backstepping controller is also designed to achieve global chaos synchronization of the identical jerk chaotic systems with unknown parameters. The backstepping control method is a recursive procedure that links the choice of a Lyapunov function with the design of a controller and guarantees global asymptotic stability of strict feedback systems. MATLAB simulations are shown to illustrate all the main results derived in this work.

Opis:
An information based method for solving stochastic control problems with partial observation is proposed. First, information-theoretic lower bounds of the cost function are analysed. It is shown, under rather weak assumptions, that reduction in the expected cost with closed-loop control compared with the best open-loop strategy is upper bounded by a non-decreasing function of mutual information between control variables and the state trajectory. On the basis of this result, an information based control (IBC) method is developed. The main idea of IBC consists in replacing the original control task by a sequence of control problems that are relatively easy to solve and such that information about the system state is actively generated. Two examples of the IBC operation are given. It is shown that the method is able to find an optimal solution without using dynamic programming at least in these examples. Hence the computational complexity of IBC is substantially smaller than that of dynamic programming, which is the main advantage of the proposed method.

After short introduction a mathematical model of the drive system is presented. In the plant, the additional nonlinearities such as friction and mechanical hysteresis are considered. Then the structure of the fuzzy system is shown. Contrary to the majority of papers the controller considered is based on the II type fuzzy sets. Then the simulation tests showing performance of the proposed structure are presented. The drive is tested at different operation points, including low-speed region where friction plays dominant role. A comparison of classical PI controller with antiwindup and the proposed structure is presented. Then laboratory set-up with DC motor is described briefly. Experimental results are included in the paper. It is shown that the torsional vibrations of two-mass system are damped effectively. The impact of the existing delays of system is discussed. A summary is given at the end of the paper.

Its task is to lead a vessel included in the search by the SAR services to the datum position on the basis of the data entered by the operator into the system and then automatically to search the indicated area according to the newly defined search pattern. The set goal can be achieved thanks to the autopilot that guides the ship along a given trajectory consisting of straight lines and arcs. High control accuracy is provided by the IMC control system using a relatively simple non-linear ship model. The simulation tests of the tanker model confirmed that the indicated search area can be precisely checked in a shorter time than when using the expanding square search pattern.

Praca składa się z czterech części. W części pierwszej sformułowano i podano rozwiązanie zagadnienia sterowania optymalnego w liniowym układzie stochastycznym z kwadratowym funkcjonałem kosztów na skończonym i nieskończonym przedziale czasowym. Problem ten obszerniej omówiono w [4] i [8].
An adaptive control problem for linear, continuous time stochastic system is described and solved in this paper. The unknown parameters in the model appear affinely in the drift term of the stochastic differential equation. The parameter estimates given by the maximum likelihood method are used to define the feedback gain. It is proved that the parameter estimates are strongly consistent and the cost functional reaches its minimum, i.e. the adaptive control is optimal. In this paper the continuity of the solution of the algebraic Riccati equation as a function of coefficient is also verified. The continuity is important for applications to problems in adaptive control.

This paper presets the specification and implementation of the control system of the mobile platform Rex. The presented system structure and the description of its functioning result from the application of a formal method of designing such systems. This formalism is based on the concept of an embodied agent. The behaviours of its subsystems are specified in terms of transition functions that compute, out of the variables contained in the internal memory and the input buffers, the values that are inserted into the output buffers and the internal memory. The transition functions are the parameters of elementary actions, which in turn are used in behaviour patterns which are the building blocks of the subsystems of the designed control system. Rex is a skid steering platform, with four independently actuated wheels. It is represented by a single agent that implements the locomotion functionality. The agent consists of a control subsystem, a virtual effector and a virtual receptor. Each of those subsystems is discussed in details. Both the data structures and the transition functions defining their behaviours are described. The locomotion agent is a part of the control system of the autonomous exploration and rescue robot developed within the RobREx project.

In this paper, we apply the heuristic method for determination of control functions for controllability analysis of nonlinear power systems. The problem of control of quasi-linear systems under proper assumptions on the nonlinear term is considered in the general statement. Making use of the Green’s function solution of nonlinear systems, the exact and approximate controllability conditions are expressed in terms of unknown controls in an explicit form. The way of resolving controls determination is discussed. As a particular application, a one-machine infinite-bus system is considered described by a coupled system of three first order ordinary differential equations. Two heuristic forms of admissible controls are considered providing approximate controllability within the same amount of time having different intensities. Results of numerical simulations are presented and discussed.

Opis:
This paper takes advantage of nonuniqueness of the inverse problem for nonsquare transfer function matrices of multivariable systems in order to select such poles, if any, of a minimum variance control system that can either guarantee its closed-loop stability or provide (a sort of) robustness to the control system. As a result, new pole-free and stable-pole MVC designs are offered for nonsquare LTI MIMO systems, the most general of them utilizing the Smith-factorization approach and the so-called control zeros. The new designs contribute to an illustration and extension of the Davison’s theory of (nonsquare) minimum phase systems, in that the lack or presence of (appropriate) control zeros can provide a required performance to the MVC system. Simulation examples in the Matlab/Simulink environment confirm the potential of the control zeros and their impact on redefinition of the minimum phase property.

Like any term, “quality” needs some explanation as well. The aim of the article is to outline the issues of quality assurance and control according to the current international standards (The INTOSAI Framework of Professional Pronouncements, IFPP). The analysis of the documents indicates imprecision and inconsistency of the existing approach with regard to the separated parts of the above-mentioned system. The following sections of the article refer to the understanding of the issues of quality assurance and control in individual principles, standards and guidelines of INTOSAI in order to finally formulate the concept of the chain quality that can be concluded from these documents.

The adaptive version of the discrete time-varying linear quadratic control is considered under the assumption that the coefficients have limits as time tends to infinity sufficiently fast in certain sense and the limiting system is observable and stabilizable. It is proved that time invariant LS estimator can be used to estimate the limits of the coefficients and that it is strongly consistent under some conditions well known from the time invariant case. The estimator of the parameters is used to define an adaptive control law and it is shown that the control law is optimal.

The paper raises the issue of controlling rural low voltage microgrids in an optimal manner. The impact of different criterion functions, related to the amount of energy exchanged with the distribution system operator network, the level of active power losses, the amount of energy generated by different energy sources and the value of financial performance measures regarding the microgrid operation, on the choice of operating points for devices suggested by the optimization algorithm has been analyzed. Both island and synchronous microgrid operation modes are being considered. We propose two variants of the optimization procedure: the first one is based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm and centralized control logic, and the second one takes advantage of the decentralized approach and Monte Carlo methods. A comparison of the simulation results for two sample rural microgrids, obtained for different objective functions, microgrid operation modes and optimization procedure variants, with the use of prepared algorithm implementations, has been provided. The results show that the proper choice of an objective function can have a crucial impact on the optimization algorithm’s behavior, the choice of operating points and, as a consequence, on microgrid behavior as well. The choice of the proper form of the objective function is the responsibility of the person in charge of both the microgrid itself and its operation. This paper can contribute towards making correct decisions in this area. Generally, slightly better results have been achieved for the centralized control mode of operation. Nevertheless, the results also suggest that in many cases the approach based on distributed logic can return results that are better or sufficiently close to the ones provided by the centralized and more sophisticated approach.

Nowadays, the growth and complexity of functionalities of current information systems, especially dynamic, distributed and heterogeneous information systems, makes the design and creation of such systems a difficult task and at the same time, strategic for businesses. A very important stage of data protection in an information system is the creation of a high level model, independent of the software, satisfying the needs of system protection and security. The process of role engineering, i.e. the identification of roles and setting up in an organization is a complex task. The paper presents the modeling and design stages in the process of role engineering in the aspect of security schema development for information systems, in particular for dynamic, distributed information systems, based on the role concept and the usage concept. Such a schema is created first of all during the design phase of a system. Two actors should cooperate with each other in this creation process, the application developer and the security administrator, to determine the minimal set of user’s roles in agreement with the security constraints that guarantee the global security coherence of the system.

Opis:
The primary objective of this paper is the custom design of an effective, yet relatively easy-to-implement, predictive control algorithm to maintain normoglycemia in patients with type 1 diabetes. The proposed patient-tailorable empirical model featuring the separated feedback dynamics to model the effect of insulin administration and carbohydrate intake was proven to be suitable for the synthesis of a high-performance predictive control algorithm for artificial pancreas. Within the introduced linear model predictive control law, the constraints were applied to the manipulated variable in order to reflect the technical limitations of insulin pumps and the typical nonnegative nature of the insulin administration. Similarly, inequalities constraints for the controlled variable were also assumed while anticipating suppression of hypoglycemia states during the automated insulin treatment. However, the problem of control infeasibility has emerged, especially if one uses too tight constraints of the manipulated and the controlled variable concurrently. To this end, exploiting the Farkas lemma, it was possible to formulate the helper linear programming problem based on the solution of which this infeasibility could be identified and the optimality of the control could be restored by adapting the constraints. This adaptation of constraints is asymmetrical, thus one can force to fully avoid hypoglycemia at the expense of mild hyperglycemia. Finally, a series of comprehensive in-silico experiments were carried out to validate the presented control algorithm and the proposed improvements. These simulations also addressed the control robustness in terms of the intersubject variability and the meal announcements uncertainty.

This paper presents an algorithm for nonlinear adaptive control of the viral load in HIV-1 infection. The infection model considered is a reduced complexity nonlinear state-space model with two state variables, that represent the plasma concentration of uninfected and infected CD4+ T-cells of the human immune system. The viral load is assumed to be proportional to the concentration of infected cells. First, a change of variables that exactly linearizes the system is obtained. For the resulting linear system the manipulated variable is obtained by state feedback. To compensate for the uncertainty in the infection parameter of the model an estimator based on a Control Lyapunov Function is designed.

The stability of the building system using the proposed control is verified through the Lyapunov approach. It is also proved that the synergetic controller is robust to external disturbances. Then, synergetic theories are used to design a reconfigurable control for damper stuck failures in variable air volume (VAV) to recover the nominal performance. Simulations are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller for a three-zone building.

Stability analysis based on Lyapunov theory is performed in order to guarantee the closed loop stability. A modification of digital controller algorithms, based on the introduction of a virtual reference value, which never exceeds active constraints in the actuator output is presented and investigated for some algorithms used in single-loop control systems. This idea, derived from virtual modification of a control error, can be used in digital control systems subjected to both magnitude and rate constraints. The modification is introduced in the form of on-line adaptation to the control task. Hence the design of optimal (in a specified sense) digital controller parameters can be separated from actuator constraints. The adaptation of the control algorithm (to actuator constraints) is performed by the transformation of the control error and is equivalent to the introduction of a new, virtual reference value for the control system. An application of this approach is presented through examples of three digital control algorithms: the PID algorithm, the dead-beat controller and the state space controller. In all cases, clear advantages of transients are observed, which yields some general conclusions to the problem of processing actuator constraints in control.

Predictive control algorithms have been worked out mainly to control linear plants. There is a great demand to apply different control ideas to nonlinear systems. Using predictive control algorithms for nonlinear systems is a promising technique. Extended horizon one-step-ahead and long-range optimal predictive control algorithms are given here for the parametric Volterra model (which includes also the generalized Hammerstein model). A quadratic cost function is minimized which considers the quadratic deviations of the reference signal and the output signal at a future point (or points) beyond the dead time and also penalizes large control signal increments. For prediction of the output signal, a predictive model is applied which uses information about the input and output signals up to the current time. A predictive transformation of the nonlinear dynamic model is given. The incremental model is advantageous since the cost function contains the control increment and not the control signal itself. An incremental transformation of the predictive forms is also described. Sub-optimal solutions to the optimal control algorithms are discussed with different assumptions for the control signal during the control horizon. The effect of the different strategies and the effect of the tuning parameters is investigated through simulation examples.

The adaptive speed controller uses on-line trained fuzzy neural network, which enables very fast tracking of the changing speed reference signal. This adaptive sliding-mode neuro-fuzzy controller (ASNFC) is used as a speed controller in the direct rotor-field oriented control (DRFOC) of the induction motor (IM) drive structure. Connective weights of the controller are trained on-line according to the error between the actual speed of the drive and the reference model output signal. The rotor flux and speed of the vector controlled induction motor are estimated using the model reference adaptive system (MRAS) – type estimator. Presented simulation results are verified by experimental tests performed on the laboratory-rig with DSP controller.

The method is based on a two-loop model following control (MFC) system containing a nominal model of the controlled plant and two controllers: the nonlinear, suboptimal fuzzy predictive one as the main controller and the proposed robust controller as an auxiliary one. In the paper ways of employing Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models to synthesize Model Predictive Control with State equations (MPCS) for nonlinear processes and basic features exhibited by the MFC structure are presented. The resulting controller has been incorporated into the MFC structure, and then a method for synthesizing the auxiliary controller has been given. The proposed control structure has been tested for its performance on control plants with perturbed parameters. Results of tests lend support to the view that the proposed control method may find wide application to robust control of nonlinear plants with time-varying parameters.

Opis:
Nonlinear motion of the microcantilever probe in the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) has been extensively studied considering mainly the van der Waals forces. Since the behavior of the microcantilever is vital to quality of generated images, the study of control strategies that force the probe to avoid undesired behavior such as chaotic motion, is also of significant importance. A number of published works has shown that the microcantilever is subject to chaotic motion for a certain combination of parameters. For such a parameter combination, the control system must suppress the chaotic motion. Here, an study of the AFM mathematical model is presented, aiming to find a region of operation of the AFM where the motion is chaotic. In order to suppress the chaotic motion, a periodic orbit of the system is obtained, and the controller forces the system to that periodic orbit. Two control strategies are used, namely: The State Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) and the Optimal Linear Feedback Control (OLFC). Both control strategies consider the complete nonlinearities of the system, and the OLFC guarantees the global stability. The numerical simulations carried out showed the efficiency of the control methods as well as the sensitivity of each control strategy to parametric errors. Without the parametric errors, both control strategies were effective in maintaining the system into the desired orbit. On the other hand, in the presence of parametric errors, the SDRE technique was more robust than the OLFC.

The paper addresses an important issue in surface vessel motion control practice that the ship dynamics and sailing performance can be affected by speed loss. The vessel speed is significantly decreased by the added resistance generated by waves. An adaptive sliding mode course keeping control design is proposed which takes into account uncertain ship dynamics caused by forward speed variations, while avoiding performance compromises under changing operating and environmental conditions. The sliding mode control provides robust performance for time-varying wave disturbances and time-varying changes in ship parameters and actuator dynamics. After combining the unknown but bounded system uncertainties, the design of the adaptation law is obtained which is based on the Lyapunov’s direct method. Simulations on a ship with two rudders illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution.
