On 12 July 1967 the Ministry of Education and Higher Education officially created the Faculty of Drilling and Petroleum and the Departament of Mathematics III.
Okrągłe rocznice skłaniają do podsumowań i refleksji. Właśnie w tym roku mija 45 rocznica samodzielnego funkcjonowania Wydziału Wiertniczo-Naftowego na Akademii Górniczo-Hutniczej im. Stanisława Staszica w Krakowie. Dnia 12.07.1967 roku Ministerstwo Oświaty i Szkolnictwa Wyższego powołało Wydział Wiertniczo-Naftowy, składający się z Instytutu Wiertniczo-Naftowego oraz Katedry Matematyki III.

Opis:

The new understanding of geotourism includes not only the visits to abiotic nature objects but their broad cognition, from geological structure and history, through landforms development, environmental problems, nature protection, impact on economic growth of the region up to historical and cultural contexts. The aim of such broad attempt is to better understand the relationships between geological structure, landforms, land development, history, economics and culture (including the aesthetic impressions of visitors) of a geosite and region in which it is located. Such hollistic attempt generates the demand for a new type of specialist. His education should integrate the knowledge of the Earth and environmental sciences, tourism industry theory and practice, basics of economy, finances, law, history and cultural heritage of the region together with the abilities of interpersonal communication and transfer of knowledge in a way understandable for non-professionals. The authors present the history and recent practice of geotourism education at the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environment Protection of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków.

W 2019 roku Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza w Krakowie świętowała setną rocznicę swojej działalności. Utworzona została w 1919 roku jako Akademia Górnicza. Aby sprostać gwałtownemu rozwojowi techniki, przemysł wydobywczy musiał być wspierany przez nowe, rozwijające się intensywnie nauki, a taką była wówczas elektrotechnika. Pierwsza Katedra Elektrotechniki powstała na Wydziale Górniczym w 1920 roku. Kierowanie tą katedrą w latach 1920-1946 powierzono nowo mianowanemu profesorowi Janowi Studniarskiemu. W 1946 roku powołany został Wydział Elektromechaniczny, w którego programach kształcenia znalazło się już bardzo dużo zagadnień z szeroko pojętego obszaru nauk elektrycznych. Jednak samodzielny wydział „elektryczny” utworzony zostaje dopiero w 1952 roku po podziale wydziału Elektromechanicznego, jako Wydział Elektryfikacji Górnictwa i Hutnictwa. Jego bezpośrednim spadkobiercą jest działający aktualnie Wydział Elektrotechniki, Automatyki, Informatyki i Inżynierii Biomedycznej.
In 2019, the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow celebrated its 100th anniversary. This University was established in 1919 as the Mining Academy. To cope with the rapid development of technology, the mining industry had to be supported by new, intensively developing sciences, which was then electrical engineering. The first Department of Electrical Engineering was established at the Mining Faculty in 1920. The chairmanship of this Department in 1920-1946 was entrusted to the newly appointed professor Jan Studniarski. In 1946, the Electromechanical faculty was established, whose educational programs already included a lot of issues from the broadly understood field of electrical sciences. However, an independent "electrical" faculty was created only in 1952 after the division of the Electromechanical faculty, as the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgy Electrification. His direct successor is the current faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automation, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering.

Opis:

Creative industries do not make revolutions in city planning but transform the ways of thinking about and practicing urban space development. In the context of Minsk, Belarus, creative industries are a part of the contemporary urban infrastructure transformation that is reestablishing the former Soviet urban space. The aim of this article is to document and analyze the ways that creative industries turn the urban spaces of Minsk into participatory platforms for cultural transformations. The development of these creative industries in Belarus has played a crucial role in transforming urban spaces into new inclusive cities. The distinctive feature of Belarusian creative industries is their embeddedness in the spaces of Soviet cities. Empirically, this text is based on the findings of a qualitative empirical study in the framework of grounded theory. The research seeks to understand the self-narrative and self-identification of the new creative class in Minsk (spring and summer 2018). The respondents were people who are involved in the process of developing creative industries in Belarus.

This paper’s focus is on the innovations in the urban public political agenda that are due to the interplay between participatory digital platforms, the socio-economic paths of specific urban environments, and long-term policy orientations on the national and urban levels. The context of the 2020 presidential elections in Belarus and the resulting boom of participation in the local and national political agendas is taken here as a particular configuration of the mentioned interplay and its outcomes. The first part of the paper focuses on the role of digital platforms in the studied boom of participation in 2020, the second documents the urban policy developments in Belarus during the period of 2015–2020, and the third reflects on the compatibility of the Belarusian case with wider discussions on the political impact that the spread of digital platforms has on urbanism. It is argued that the repressive state, the gradual marketization of urban development and the accompanying strengthening of urban dwellers’ economic autonomy, and the proliferation of commercial digital platforms and civic tech are the factors that have defined the studied politicization and the boom of participation in Belarus. The examined case shows the contours of emerging politics in non-democracies under conditions of ubiquitous digitalization and the pressure on the state’s redistributive capacities.

Opis:

This paper provides a conceptual theoretical review of participatory turn and gamification from a United Kingdom (UK) perspective. Democratic deficit is a perennial problem in urban-planning systems due to the number of causal factors. Participatory practices and gamification are two instruments that can be used to help alleviate low democratic responsiveness. The paper articulates how there are different ways of knowing and assessing community priorities and values – people need increased consciousness and self-confidence to participate. The UK case studies that are discussed have made a significant contribution by providing useful insights regarding the benefits and limitations of participatory practices and gamification. For example, ‘Participology’ and ‘Geogopoly’ have clear participatory gamification benefits even though they are unable to include decision-maker accountability or recreate real-life power relationships. This paper posits that the use of participatory practices and/or gamification as policy levers (specifically in UK urban-planning processes) will herald a shift in the balance of power.

Opis:

In this paper I present a comparative analysis of the knowledge discovery process applied by Socrates and the contemporary life coach. On one hand, I will use the method of in-depth analysis of selected (Socratic) dialogues by Plato, and on the other one of coaching practice and coaching values formulated by the International Coach Federation. The term “care of the self” (epimeleia heautou) appears in the Socratic dialogues, Alkibiades I and Apology of Socrates, and this term is juxtaposed with the coaching idea of “being resourceful”. “Taking care of yourself” is about constantly gaining knowledge about yourself. This knowledge is extracted by Socrates and, in contemporary terms, by a life coach. The process of uncovering knowledge involves certain key elements that are shared by both the Socratic method and modern life coaching: establishing a relationship, a purpose and relevant questions. The analysis of each of these elements leads us to the conclusion that the key value of coaching, “the resourceful state of the coach and the coachee”, has its roots in ancient philosophy – in the wisdom of Socrates.

W artykule podjęto próbę zilustrowania trzech relacji pomiędzy literaturą a miastem. W pierwszej z nich miasto staje się treścią literatury jako inspiracja, zrekonstruowana mapa, ale także indywidualne doświadczenie. W drugiej – literatura inicjuje działania twórcze w mieście. Reprezentują je rzeźby literackie, modyfikacje budynków mieszkalnych, a także interaktywne aplikacje odsłaniające lokalną przestrzeń w kontekście literatury. Trzecia relacja zawęża się do międzynarodowego programu UNESCO opierającego się na spójności działań z pogranicza sztuki literackiej i marketingu. Nowoczesne miasto staje się projektem otwartym, mającym na celu stworzenie poczucia bliskości pomiędzy czytelnikiem/mieszkańcem/turystą a przestrzenią miejską. To szansa na stworzenie zupełnie nowej jakości w doświadczeniu literatury, ale także w jej produkcji i dystrybucji, gdzie humanizacja odgrywa kluczową rolę w tworzeniu i podtrzymywaniu wspólnoty.
The article attempts to illustrate three relations between literature and a city. In the first one, the city becomes the content of literature as an inspiration, a reconstructed map, but also an individual experience. In the second, literature initiates creative activities within the city. They are represented by literary sculptures, modifications of residential buildings, as well as interactive applications that reveal the local space in the context of literature. The third relationship narrows down to the international UNESCO program based on the coherence of activities on the border of literary art and marketing. The modern city becomes an open project aimed, in particular, at creating a sense of closeness between the reader-resident-tourist and the urban space. It is an opportunity to create a completely new quality in the experience of literature, but also in its production and distribution where humanization plays a key role in creating and sustaining community.

This article aims to analyze the “Robim Good” project – a digital platform for sharing urban knowledge and info about upcoming local campaigns. A vacuum among urban initiatives was established in Belarus because of the repressive policy of the authoritarian regime. As a result, around 965 non-profit organizations have been shut down. Nonetheless, there was a demand from activists to create a safe managerial organization that focused on urbanism. The “Robim Good” project became a solution. The research question is as follows: what is the value orientation of the analyzed digital platform that attracts new participants? The paper applies the value-based approach in NGO engagement. The analysis shows that one of the main promoted values and key characteristics of the digital ecosystem is security, which is directed at overcoming the dangers of the unpredictable regime. Subsequently, “Robim Good” has been able to engage volunteers and survive after a year of activity.

This article is devoted to an analysis of the “hybrid neighborhood” phenomenon. Traditionally, a Soviet residential yard is presented in urban studies as the sphere of a neighbor’s active participation. The post-Soviet changes have significantly weakened the activities of neighbor communities; however, the spread of digital communication tools (social networks and messengers) has led to an increase in civic engagement in cities (new forms of neighboring communities are created, traditions of spending time together with neighbors revived, and individuals are actively involving in the struggle for their “place in the city”). The empirical materials that are analyzed reveal the features of neighbors interacting demonstrate the differences between “neighbor” and “civil” communication modes, define the role of online communities in local self-government, and practically implement the “right to the city.”

Celem mniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie nowego modelu partycypacji w rozwoju, odpowiadającego współczesnym uwarunkowaniom społecznym, gospodarczym i kulturowym. Do finalnej konstrukcji modelu wiodą klasyczne ustalenia teoretyczne i właściwe im kategorie pojęciowe. Ewolucjonizm dostarcza terminu roli społecznej i umieszcza włączenie w rozwój w polu napięć między jednostką a systemem. Modernizacja pozwala wiązać udział w rozwoju z typem woli, czyli intencją uczestnictwa. Wreszcie dialektyka umożliwia wychwycenie podstawowej dynamiki procesu, jak również uprawdopodobnia identyfikację zbiorowej kategorii uczestnictwa. Wydaje się, że współcześnie jest nią ruch społeczny. To on pełni rolę aksjologicznego zaplecza zmiany społecznej i daje się poznać jako wartościo-normatywna warstwa rozwoju, dzięki której rozwój może zostać scharakteryzowany jako proces współtworzenia i współuczestnictwa – proces, w którym partycypuje się biograficznie, refleksyjnie i międzypodmiotowo.
The purpose of the article is to present a new model of participation in development, corresponding to contemporary social, economic and cultural conditions. Classical theoretical findings and their respective conceptual categories lead to the final construction of the model. Evolutionism provides the term of social role and places participation in the field of tensions between the individual and the system. Modernization facilitates linking inclusion in development to the type of will, i.e. intention to participate. Finally, the dialectic makes it possible to capture the underlying dynamics of the process, and also to identify the collective category of participation, which seems to be represented by a contemporary social movement. It is that movement which acts as the axiological basis of social change and becomes the value-normative layer of development, through which that development can be characterized as a process of co-creation and joint participation, in which one participates biographically, reflectively and inter-subjectively.

Opis:

Przedstawianie czasu wolnego jako czasu poza pracą nie oddaje w pełni współczesnej rzeczywistości, gdzie czas pracy i czas wolny na skutek m.in. elastycznego czasu pracy czy obecności technologii mobilnych ulegają zacieraniu. Dodatkowo coraz częściej mamy do czynienia z sytuacjami, kiedy jednostki wykonują równocześnie dwie i więcej aktywności (ang. multitasking) czy z tymi wskazującymi na wielowymiarowość praktykowania czasu wolnego (ang. multi-dimensional nature of leisure). Tym samym w badaniu czasu wolnego niemożliwe są do utrzymania tradycyjne metodologie ilościowe oparte na dychotomii praca – czas wolny. Tekst prezentuje doświadczeniową perspektywę podejścia do problematyki czasu wolnego opartą na metodologii interpretatywnej i triangulacji metod badawczych. Efektem takiego podejścia jest perspektywa myślenia o czasie wolnym, która zrywa z tradycyjną dychotomią praca – czas wolny na rzecz subiektywnego doświadczania, którego wynikiem jest różnorodność form, stylów i sposobów spędzania czasu wolnego w zmiennym kontekście społecznym.
The presentation of leisure time as time spent away from work does not fully reflect contemporary reality, in which working time and leisure are blurring due to factors such as flexible working hours or mobile technologies. Furthermore, individuals who engage in two or more activities at the same time (multitasking) or those indicating the multidimensional nature of leisure are becoming more common. As a result, traditional quantitative methodologies based on the work-leisure dichotomy are unsuitable for studying leisure. Based on interpretative methodology and research method triangulation, the text presents an experiential perspective on the approach to leisure. This approach results in a way of thinking about leisure that rejects the traditional work-leisure dichotomy in favour of subjective experience, resulting in a variety of forms, styles, and ways of experiencing leisure time in a changing social context.

Niniejszy artykuł dotyka problematyki nierówności szans edukacyjnych i możliwości realizacji kariery naukowej przez osoby wywodzące się z klas ludowych, która w polskiej przestrzeni badawczej nie była dotychczas eksplorowana. Podstawowym źródłem danych w niniejszym artykule są narracyjne wywiady biograficzne z pracownikami dydaktyczno-badawczymi polskich uczelni, którzy mimo pochodzenia z mniej uprzywilejowanych rodzin, nieposiadających znacznych zasobów kapitału społecznego, kulturowego i ekonomicznego, zdołali osiągnąć sukces w świecie naukowym. Główne pytanie badawcze brzmi: w jaki sposób konfiguracja różnego rodzaju kapitałów zakumulowanych i mających swoje źródło w rodzinie wiąże się z rozwojem kariery akademickiej w Polsce? Autorzy artykułu proponują upowszechnienie nowych pojęć teoretycznych: „antykapitał rodzinny” oraz „podwyższony kapitał kulturowy”.
This article refers to problems that have not been explored in the Polish research space so far, namely educational opportunities and career paths for academics from working classes. The basic source of data in this article are narrative biographical interviews with academics employees of Polish universities who, coming from a family with modest intellectual traditions, and scarce social, cultural and economic capital, have managed to achieve success in the scientific world. The main research question is: how is the configuration of various types of capital accumulated in the family related to the development of an academic career in Poland? The authors of the article propose the dissemination of new theoretical concepts: “anti-capital of a family” and “upward cultural capital”.

Opis:

Pandemia Covid-19 znacząco zmieniła formy spędzania czasu wolnego, między innymi wpłynęła na sposób słuchania muzyki – jednej z najczęstszych aktywności Polaków w czasie wolnym. W początkowym okresie pandemii zamknięto instytucje kultury, w tym te muzyczne, i odwołano koncerty plenerowe oraz festiwale, przez co słuchacze stracili możliwość bezpośredniego uczestniczenia we wszelkich wydarzeniach muzycznych, a artyści wykonywania muzyki na żywo. Zarówno jednym jak i drugim nie pozostało nic innego, jak przenieść swoje aktywności do Internetu. Szybko jednak okazało się, że takie obcowanie z muzyką jest dla słuchaczy (i wykonawców) niewystarczające. Z badań wynika, że jedną z największych tęsknot w czasie pandemii była chęć uczestnictwa w wydarzeniu muzycznym na żywo – koncercie lub festiwalu. Artykuł przedstawia festiwal jako przykład wielozmysłowej kultury iwentu, rodzaju święta, w którym muzyka odgrywa ważne społeczne funkcje – integracji społecznej i budowania poczucia wspólnoty, czyli tego, czego Polakom w pandemii najbardziej brakowało.
The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly changed the way people spend their leisure time, including the pattern they listen to music - one of the most common leisure activities of Poles. In the early days of the pandemic, cultural institutions, among others the musical ones, were closed and outdoor concerts and festivals were cancelled, so that spectators lost the opportunity to participate in any musical events and artists to perform live music. There was nothing left but to transfer those activities to the Internet. However, it quickly turned out that such contact with music was insufficient for listeners and performers. According to research, one of the greatest longings during the pandemic was the desire to participate in a live music event - a gig or a festival. The article presents a festival as an example of the culture multi-sensory event, a kind of celebration in which music plays important social functions of social integration and building a sense of community which is what Poles missed most during the pandemic.

Opis:

Artykuł opisuje, wyjaśnia i interpretuje fenomen biegania długodystansowego przez pryzmat kategorii immersyjności. Pojęcie to w naukach społecznych, także w socjologii, raczej nie występuje. Dlatego podjęto próbę jego operacjonalizacji. W analizie zastosowano kwerendę materiałów poświęconych zjawisku biegania, zamieszczanych głównie na włoskich i polskich portalach internetowych. Zastosowano metodę opisu interpretacji dyskursów i treści zawartych w mottach poświęconych bieganiu. Uwzględniono przede wszystkim teorię relacyjności oraz tezę o ulokowaniu jednostki w przestrzeni dwóch mechanizmów społecznych: determinizmu oraz indywidualnej sprawczości podmiotowej. Opracowano i zaktualizowano problem zarówno w jego konkretnych przypadkach (narracje i przeżycia biegaczy, osobiste doświadczenia autora w odniesieniu do zjawiska biegania, wzniosłe i zdystansowane opinie na temat biegania), jak i w zasięgu uniwersalnym (opisy i interpretacje pojawiające się w badaniach poświęconych bieganiu długodystansowemu). Na podstawie przeprowadzonych analiz wywnioskowano, że fenomen biegania jest w przypadku biegaczy zarówno wyzwalający, rekonstruujący ich biografie, jak i immersyjny, to znaczy pochłaniający, „zniewalający”.
The article describes, explains and interprets the phenomenon of long-distance running through the prism of the immersion category. This concept is rather absent in social sciences, including sociology, therefore an attempt to define it, was made. A search of materials dedicated to the phenomenon of running, posted mainly on Italian and Polish websites was used in this analysis. The method of describing the interpretation of the discourses and content contained in the mottos dedicated to running was applied. First of all, the theory of relationality and the thesis about placing the individual in the space of two social mechanisms: determinism and individual abilities were taken into account. The problem was developed and updated both in its specific cases (narratives and experiences of runners, the author’s personal experience with the phenomenon of running, lofty and distanced opinions about running) as well as in an universal scope (descriptions and interpretations present in various studies dedicated to long-distance running). Based on the carried out analyses, it was concluded in the case of runners, that the phenomenon of running is both liberating, reconstructing their biographies, and immersive, i.e. absorbing, “captivating”.

Opis:

Czas wolny to dorobek nowoczesnego społeczeństwa i stał się dostępny dzięki industrializacji. Jest wartością stałą ponowoczesnych społeczeństw. Ulega jednak przemianom – dotyczą one jego zasobów (mamy go więcej lub mniej) oraz jakości i sposobów jego spędzania. To kultura określa ilość, jakość i treść czasu wolnego, którym dysponują jednostki i grupy. W społeczeństwach kultury zachodniej dominujący jest model konsumpcyjny spędzania czasu wolnego. Jednak coraz częściej implementowane są w obszar laisure time zyskujące na popularności wartości antykonsumpcyjne i związane z konsumpcją zrównoważoną. Jest to nowość występująca w aktualnych wzorach kultury. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie, że istotne dziś zrównoważone i antykonsumpcyjne idee pokazują jednostkom i grupom, jak korzystać z czasu wolnego w nowy sposób, jak konsumować antykonsumpcyjnie. W czasie wolnym należy rezygnować z hiperkonsumpcji i konsumować inaczej – bardziej ekologicznie, zrównoważenie i bardziej oszczędnie. Podstawą artykułu jest analiza literatury przedmiotu, badań zastanych, a także praktyk społecznych związanych z niniejszą problematyką.
Leisure as an achievement of modern society has become available to the masses thanks to industrialization. It is a constant value of postmodern societies. However, it is undergoing changes – changes in its resources (we have more of it or less) and in the quality and ways of spending it. It is culture that determines the quantity, quality and content of leisure time available to individuals and groups. In the Western culture societies, the consumption model of spending free time is dominant. But, gaining popularity anti-consumer and sustainable consumption values, are being implemented in the area of leisure time more and more often. This is a novelty in current cultural patterns. The aim of the article is to show that sustainable and anti-consumer ideas that are relevant today, show individuals and groups how to use leisure time in a new way, and how to consume them in an anti-consumer way. The basis of the article is the analysis of subject literature, existing research, as well as social practices related to this issue.

Artykuł poświęcony jest wybranym aspektom społeczno-psychologicznym nadmiernego korzystania z Internetu przez młodzież. Spędzanie czasu wolnego online dostarcza wielu korzyści, ale może być także przyczyną nowych, nieznanych wcześniejszym pokoleniom problemów. Nadmierne korzystanie z Internetu może przerodzić się w uzależnienie behawioralne i podobnie jak inne uzależnienia prowadzić do zaniedbywania innych sfer życia oraz poważnych szkód zdrowotnych i społecznych. Autorka przedstawia symptomy i kryteria problematycznego korzystania z Internetu, niektóre czynniki społeczno-kulturowe sprzyjające uzależnieniu, a także dane statystyczne z krajów rozwiniętych wskazujące na to, że nadmierne angażowanie się w nowe technologie i przenoszenie znaczącej części życia do świata wirtualnego staje się poważnym problemem społecznym, którego nie wolno lekceważyć.
The article is devoted to selected socio-psychological aspects of excessive use of the Internet by young people. Spending free time online provides many benefits, but it can also cause new problems unknown to previous generations. Excessive use of the Internet can turn into a behavioral addiction and, like other addictions, lead to neglect of other spheres of life and serious health and social harm. The author presents the symptoms and criteria of problematic Internet use, some socio-cultural factors contributing to addiction, as well as statistical data from developed countries showing that excessive involvement in new technologies and transferring a significant part of life to the virtual world is becoming a serious social problem, which must not be disregarded.

Czas wolny nie należy do tematów często podejmowanych przez socjologów w Polsce, mimo że pozostaje doświadczeniem prawie każdego z nas, kto żyje w płynnej nowoczesności. Problematyka ta obejmuje zakres niezwykle szeroki, nie sposób jej ująć, ani tym bardziej zamknąć, w niewielkim tomie. Uważamy jednak, że kategorię czasu wolnego warto poddać analizie, zwłaszcza że niedawne przeżycie pandemii COVID-19 zmieniło naszą codzienność, także w wymiarze czasu wolnego. Być może rodzące się przy tej okazji pytania mogą przekształcić się w pytania badawcze i zaowocować kolejnymi studiami.
Leisure time is not one of the topics often addressed by sociologists in Poland, even though it remains the experience of almost everyone who lives in liquid modernity. This issue covers an extremely wide range, it is impossible to include it, let alone close it, in a small volume. However, we believe that the category of free time is worth analyzing, especially since the recent experience of the COVID-19 pandemic has changed our everyday life, also in terms of free time. Perhaps the questions that arise on this occasion can turn into research questions and result in further studies.

Nieustannie rozwijające się społeczeństwo europejskie aktywnie mierzy się z problemami etycznymi, dotykającymi każdej części życia. Tekst ma na celu zaprezentowanie problematyki zarządzania danymi medycznymi oraz zaproponowanie uzasadnienia dla tego obszaru działalności badawczo-rozwojowej z perspektywy Unii Europejskiej przy uwzględnieniu istniejących już wartości oraz podejścia filozoficznego. Na podstawie wybranych koncepcji prezentujących różne dziedziny filozofii oraz bioetyki artykuł prezentuje holistyczne i nowoczesne podejście do zagadnienia etyki w zarządzania danymi. Punktem wyjścia dla tego typu rozważań stała się teoria umowy społecznej T. Hobbesa, która omawia powinności człowieka wobec społeczeństwa oraz wolności przysługujących człowiekowi. Dyskurs analityczny został wsparty koncepcjami filozoficznymi L. Floridiego oraz A. Dawsona. Te dwa paradygmaty pomagają zakreślić nowoczesne problemy i terminologie, które starają się uchwycić zmieniające się aspekty technologiczne dzisiejszego świata.
Endlessly changing European society actively faces ethical problems that transpire through every part of life. This article aims to present the problem of managing and utilizing medical data and proposes a concept for justifying these types of research and developmental activities from the perspective of the European Union. By selecting appropriate texts from different areas within philosophy and bioethics, the author aims to show a cohesive and innovative approach. He utilizes the concept of a social contract from the works of T. Hobbes in order to highlight the duties of humans toward their society and the liberties that are available to them. Moreover, the philosophical concepts of L. Floridi and A. Dawson help capture the modern problems and terminologies that try to explain the everchanging technological aspects of modern society.

Wysiłek spotkania z „Innym” jest podejmowany przez całe życie, na przykład w sytuacji migracji, która jest częściowym opuszczeniem jednej kultury i spotkaniem z drugą. Jednostka w sytuacji migracji konfrontuje w sobie tożsamość pochodzącą z kultury pierwotnej, ukształtowanej w kraju pochodzenia, z nowymi formami zachowań nabywanymi w nowym miejscu. Część dawnych wzorców, przede wszystkim związanych z kulturą jawną (język, obyczaje, sposoby spędzania czasu wolnego), a także częściowo z kulturą ukrytą (sposoby myślenia), ulega zmianie. Pewne treści dotyczące ukrytego wymiaru (wartości i postaw) pozostają jednak trwałym elementem emocjonalnych identyfikacji. Poczucie odrębności w nieznanym wcześniej środowisku wpływa na rodzaj posiłków wybieranych przez migrantów, a wzory kulinarne stają się elementem procesu lokalizacji w warunkach postępującego ujednolicenia kulturowego. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia sposób, w jaki wzory kulinarne stają się elementami „zewnętrznymi” współczesnych tożsamości jednostkowych, społecznych i zbiorowych młodej polskiej migracji w Irlandii. Stół w sposób metaforyczny staje się elementem pomagającym odnaleźć się w obcej rzeczywistości kraju przyjmującego.
The effort of meeting the “Other” is undertaken through all life (e.g. in the case of migration, which is a partial departure from one culture to another). In a situation of migration, an individual confronts the identity coming from the primary culture, shaped in the country of origin, with new forms of behaviour acquired in the current situation. Some of the old patterns, primarily related to the explicit culture (language, ways of spending free time), and partly to the hidden culture (ways of thinking), are changing. Certain contents concerning the hidden dimension (values, attitudes) remain a permanent element of emotional identification. The sense of separateness in an unknown environment, affects the type of meals chosen by migrants. Culinary patterns become an element of the localization process in the progressive cultural unification. This article presents the way in which culinary patterns become “external” elements of contemporary individual, social and collective identities of young Polish migration in Ireland. The table metaphorically becomes an element that helps to find oneself in a foreign reality of the host country.

Opis:

Niniejsza praca dotyczy zagadnienia organizacji czasu wolnego osób przebywających na emeryturze. Kolejny etap życia po zakończeniu pracy niesie za sobą brak obowiązków zawodowych i powolne wycofywanie się z pełnionych dotąd ról społecznych. Stan ten z jednej strony może być błogosławieństwem, z drugiej powodować uczucie pustki i stres z powodu tak nadmiaru czasu wolnego, jak i konieczności przystosowania się do nowej sytuacji. Stąd pytanie: co robić na emeryturze, by przeciwdziałać wspomnianym powyżej stanom i zjawiskom i odnaleźć się w nowej społecznej roli? Analiza zasobów Internetu oraz rynku wydawniczego pozwala znaleźć różne źródła porad, z których seniorzy przechodzący na emeryturę seniorzy mogą skorzystać. W pracy poddano analizie kilka z nich. Są to rady starszych seniorów, poradniki książkowe, portale przeznaczone dla seniorów, strony www i publikacje instytucji aktywizujących osoby starsze, w końcu – portale firm komercyjnych zainteresowanych seniorami jako konsumentami. Większość rad wpisuje się w model starości aktywnej, emerytury zaplanowanej i zorganizowanej pod względem zagospodarowania czasu wolnego, przygotowania mentalnego, zdrowotnego i administracyjnego. Jest to model pożądany, gdyż pozwala zwiększyć szanse na fizyczny i psychiczny dobrostan seniorów, stąd rady takie wydają się wspierać samodzielne uczestnictwo osób starszych w życiu społecznym.
This work deals with the issue of organizing leisure time for people who are retired. The next stage of life after the completion of work brings with it the lack of professional duties and the slow withdrawal of social roles performed so far. On the one hand, this state of affairs can be a blessing, on the other hand it can cause emptiness and stress due to both the excess of free time and the need to cope with the new situation. Hence the question: “what to do in retirement?” to counteract the above-mentioned states and phenomena and find itself in a satisfying new social role. The analysis of Internet resources and the publishing market allows to find various sources of pieces of advice that beginner seniors can utilise. Several of them have been analyzed in this paper. These include tips from more senior citizens, book guides, portals dedicated to seniors, institutions that activate older people and, finally, commercial companies interested in seniors as consumers. Opis:

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza związku oceny własnego ciała dokonanej przez osobę grającą w grę RPG z wyglądem tworzonej przez nią postaci w kreatorze tej gry. Przeprowadzono badanie eksploracyjne z zastosowaniem dwóch kwestionariuszy: Skali Oceny Ciała autorstwa Franzoi i Shields (1984) w polskiej adaptacji Lipowskiej i Lipowskiego (2013) oraz autorskiego narzędzia do Oceny Ciała Postaci. Przebadane zostały 122 osoby w wieku od 18 do 39 lat, w tym 52 kobiety i 70 mężczyzn. Wyniki badań wykazały istotne statystycznie korelacje w grupie mężczyzn w zakresie podobieństwa oceny własnego ciała do tworzonej postaci w grze RPG. Oznacza to, że im wyżej mężczyźni oceniali swoje ciało w zakresie atrakcyjności fizycznej, masy ciała i kondycji fizycznej, tym bardziej postacie tworzone przez nich w grze RPG cechowały się podobieństwem do nich. Artykuł stanowi zachętę do eksploracji zagadnienia kreatorów postaci gier RPG.
The aim of this article is to analyze the relationship between the assessment of RPG player’s own body and the appearance of the character created by the player in the wizard of this game. An exploratory study was carried out using two questionnaires: the Body-Esteem Scale by Franzoi and Shields (1984) in the Polish adaptation of Lipowska and Lipowski (2013) and the authentic Characters Body Assessment. 122 participants aged 18 to 39 were examined: 52 women and 70 men. The results of the study indicated statistically significant correlations in the male group in terms of similarity of the assessment of their bodies to the created character of the RPG game. The higher the men rated their bodies regarding physical attractiveness, body weight and physical condition, the more the characters they created in the game were similar to them. The article is an encouragement to explore the issue of game creators.

Tworzone obecnie światy cyfrowe operują na pewnym stopniu umowności i wymagają od użytkownika ciągłego „aktywnego wierzenia” w prezentowaną rzeczywistość. Artykuł prezentuje wnioski z tworzenia i eksponowania artystycznej instalacji Mixed Reality pt. Makietowanie rzeczywistości. Na jej podstawie prezentuje aktualne problemy techniczne i percepcyjne wynikające z prób łączenia rzeczywistości wirtualnej i fizycznej (najczęściej wspólne dla VR, AR, MR, XR): funkcjonowanie cyfrowych dłoni, dopasowywanie paralaks, konieczny do uwzględniania ruch obiektów, deformacje optyczne, momenty podłączania się i przełączania pomiędzy rzeczywistościami, komunikację łączoną, reakcje fizjologiczne. Są to elementy zaburzające immersję i/lub poczucie „obecności” – wywołujące „odklejanie się” świata cyfrowego od fizycznego. Ich analiza pozwala zweryfikować popularne przekonania na temat obecnego i przyszłego funkcjonowania cyfrowych światów, ukazuje obecny poziom zaawansowania technologicznego oraz wskazuje obszary, które okazują się nie spełniać wykreowanych w popkulturze wyobrażeń i oczekiwań.
Nowadays digital worlds operate on a conventionality and require the user to constantly “actively believe” in the presented reality. The article presents conclusions from the creation and displaying of the MR artistic installation entitled “Reality Mock-ups”. On its basis, it presents current technical and perceptual problems resulting from attempts to combine virtual and physical reality (as VR, AR, MR, XR): functioning of digital hands, parallax adjustment, movements of objects, optical deformations, the moment of connecting and switching between realities, combined communication, physiological responses. These are factors that disrupt immersion and/or the sense of “presence”, causing the “detachment” of the digital world from the physical one. Their analysis lets to verify popular beliefs about the current and future functioning of digital worlds, reveals our level of technological advancement and indicates areas that turn out not to meet the ideas and expectations created in pop culture.

Magnant, Wang and Yuan conjectured that $ μ(G) ≤ max { \frac{n}{δ+1} , \frac{(Δ-δ)n}{(Δ+δ)} } $. In this work, we give a positive answer to this conjecture, for $ Δ ≥ 2δ $.

Opis:

An edge imbalance provides a local measure of how irregular a given graph is. In this paper, we study graphs with graphic imbalance sequences. We give a new proof of imbalance graphicness for trees and use the new idea to prove that the same holds for unicyclic graphs. We then show that antiregular graphs are imbalance graphic and consider the join operation on graphs as well as the double graph operation. Our main results are concerning imbalance graphicness of three classes of block graphs: block graphs having all cut vertices in a single block; block graphs in which the subgraph induced by the cut vertices is either a star or a path. In the end, we discuss open questions and conjectures regarding imbalance graphic graphs.

Opis:

A multigraph is locally irregular if the degrees of the end-vertices of every multiedge are distinct. The locally irregular coloring is an edge coloring of a multigraph G such that every color induces a locally irregular submultigraph of G. A locally irregular colorable multigraph G is any multigraph which admits a locally irregular coloring. We denote by lir(G) the locally irregular chromatic index of a multigraph G, which is the smallest number of colors required in the locally irregular coloring of the locally irregular colorable multigraph G. In case of graphs the definitions are similar. The Local Irregularity Conjecture for 2-multigraphs claims that for every connected graph G, which is not isomorphic to K₂, multigraph ²G obtained from G by doubling each edge satisfies lir(²G) ≤ 2. We show this conjecture for cacti. This class of graphs is important for the Local Irregularity Conjecture for 2-multigraphs and the Local Irregularity Conjecture which claims that every locally irregular colorable graph G satisfies lir(G) ≤ 3. At the beginning it has been observed that all not locally irregular colorable graphs are cacti. Recently it has been proved that there is only one cactus which requires 4 colors for a locally irregular coloring and therefore the Local Irregularity Conjecture was disproved.

Książka dzieli się na dwie główne części. Część pierwsza, analityczna i w dużej mierze oparta na analizie materiałów zastanych, zawiera omówienie podstaw (społecznych, kulturowych, demograficznych) dla pojawienia się i popularyzacji zjawiska silver gamingu. Część druga, empiryczna, zawiera przedstawienie i omówienie wyników badania własnego, zrealizowanego z wykorzystaniem metod jakościowych. Badanie to poszerza dostępną wiedzę o praktykach polskich srebrnych graczy w wyżej opisanym zakresie, a także użycia gier cyfrowych w polskich instytucjach senioralnych. Całość dopełniają rozważania o charakterze aplikacyjnym w formie zbioru rekomendacji, których wdrożenie powinno przyczynić się do popularyzacji – jak określił to autor – „rozwojowo korzystnego” korzystania z gier cyfrowych przez osoby starsze. Książka skierowana jest do szerokiego grona odbiorców – badaczy zajmujących się problematyką starości oraz grami cyfrowymi, edukatorów i przedstawicieli instytucji senioralnych, decydentów kształtujących polityki senioralne, twórców gier zaintrygowanych demograficznymi przemianami środowiska graczy czy też samych srebrnych graczy i ich rodzin. Projekt dofinansowany ze środków budżetu państwa, przyznanych przez Ministra Edukacji i Nauki w ramach Programu „Doskonała nauka II” moduł: wsparcie monografii naukowych oraz w ramach subwencji na utrzymanie i rozwój potencjału badawczego Akademii Górniczo-Hutniczej im. Global and independent macro-social processes, such as the demographic aging of societies, digitalization and the growing importance of games in people’s lives (the so-called ludification of culture), contribute to the emergence of new social practices, an example of which is silver gaming. Silver gaming is a term that defines the practice of playing digital games among older people, which is the subject of this book. In the Polish context, this practice is innovative and poorly recognized by researchers, educators and game developers. The book incorporates a holistic approach to the phenomenon of silver gaming by inclusion of both the individual and institutional contexts of digital games usage by seniors, as well as possible positive and negative consequences for the functioning and well-being of silver gamers in the context of family life, physical and mental health and social inclusion. The book consists of two main parts. The first one, analytical and based on the analysis of existing materials, discusses the foundations (social, cultural, demographic) for the emergence and popularization of the phenomenon of silver gaming. The second part, empirical, includes the presentation and discussion of the results of own research, conducted with qualitative methods. This study expands the available knowledge about the practices of Polish silver gamers in the above-described scope, as well as the use of digital games in Polish elder care institutions. The whole is complemented by recommendations, the implementation of which should contribute to the popularization of – as I call it – “developmentally beneficial” use of digital games by older gamers. The book is addressed to a wide audience: researchers studying the issues of aging and digital games, educators, representatives of elderly care institutions, decision-makers shaping public policies, game developers intrigued by the demographic changes of the gamers’ population, or the silver gamers themselves and their families.

Opis:

The main aim of this article is to study the Poisson type problem for anisotropic p-Laplace type equation on long cylindrical domains. The rate of convergence is shown to be exponential, thereby improving earlier known results for similar type of operators. The Poincaré inequality for a pseudo p-Laplace operator on an infinite strip-like domain is also studied and the best constant, like in many other situations in literature for other operators, is shown to be the same with the best Poincaré constant of an analogous problem set on a lower dimension.

Opis:

We present the asymptotic analysis of the steady advection-diffusion equation in a thin tube. The problem is modeled in a mixed-type variational formulation, in order to separate the phenomenon in the axial direction and a transverse one. Such formulation makes visible the natural separation of scales within the problem and permits a successful asymptotic analysis, delivering a limiting form, free from the initial geometric singularity and suitable for approximating the original one. Furthermore, it is shown that the limiting problem can be simplified to a significantly simpler structure.

In this paper we consider the existence and asymptotic behavior of solutions of the following nonlinear Kirchhoff type problem $ u_{t t} - M ( \int_\Omega | \nabla u |^2 dx ) \Delta u - \delta \Delta u_t = \mu | u |^{p-2} u $ in $ \Omega \times ]0, \infty [ $ where $ M(s) = $ ⎧ $ a - bs $ for $ s \in [0, a/b [$, ⎨ ⎩ $ 0, $ for $ s \in [ a/b, + \infty ] $. If the initial energy is appropriately small, we derive the global existence theorem and its exponential decay.

Opis:

The paper deals with the second order nonhomogeneous linear differential equation (p(t)y′(t))′ + q(t)y(t) = f(t), which is oscillatory under the assumption that p(t) and q(t) are positive, continuously differentiable and monotone functions on [0,∞). Throughout this paper we shall use pairs of quadratic forms, which obtained by different methods than Kusano and Yoshida. This form will lead to a property of qualitative behavior, including amplitudes and slopes, of oscillatory solutions of the above equation. In addition, we will discuss the existence of three types (moderately bounded, small, large) of oscillatory solutions, which are based on results due to Kusano and Yoshida.

Let G = (V,E) be a connected simple graph of order p and size q. A graph G is called local antimagic (total) if G admits a local antimagic (total) labeling. A bijection g : E → {1, 2, . . . , q} is called a local antimagic labeling of G if for any two adjacent vertices u and v, we have $ g^+ (u) \ne g^+ (v) $, where $ g^+ (u) = \Sigma_{e∈E(u)} \text{ } g(e) $, and E(u) is the set of edges incident to u. Similarly, a bijection f : V (G)∪E(G) → {1, 2, . . . , p+q} is called a local antimagic total labeling of G if for any two adjacent vertices u and v, we have $ w_f (u) \ne w_f (v) $, where $ w_f (u) = f(u) + \Sigma_{e∈E(u)} f(e) $. Thus, any local antimagic (total) labeling induces a proper vertex coloring of G if vertex v is assigned the color $g^+ (v) $ (respectively, $ w_f (u) $). The local antimagic (total) chromatic number, denoted $χ_\text{la } (G) $ (respectively $χ_\text{lat } (G) $ ), is the minimum number of induced colors taken over local antimagic (total) labeling of G. In this paper, we determined $ χ_\text{lat } (G) $ where G is the amalgamation of complete graphs. Consequently, we also obtained the local antimagic (total) chromatic number of the disjoint union of complete graphs, and the join of $ K_1 $ and amalgamation of complete graphs under various conditions. An application of local antimagic total chromatic number is also given.

Opis:

We study the scalar difference equation $ x(k+1)=x(k)+\frac{f(x(k-N))}{N} $ where f is nonincreasing with negative feedback. This equation is a discretization of the well-studied differential delay equation $ x′(t) = f(x(t − 1)). $ We examine explicit families of such equations for which we can find, for infinitely many values of N and appropriate parameter values, various dynamical behaviors including periodic solutions with large numbers of sign changes per minimal period, solutions that do not converge to periodic solutions, and chaos. We contrast these behaviors with the dynamics of the limiting differential equation. Our primary tool is the analysis of return maps for the difference equations that are conjugate to continuous self-maps of the circle.

Opis:

We revise Krein’s extension theory of semi-bounded Hermitian operators by reducing the problem to finding all positive and contractive extensions of the “resolvent operator” $ (I + T)^{−1} $ of $ T $. Our treatment is somewhat simpler and more natural than Krein’s original method which was based on the Krein transform $ (I−T)(I+T)^{−1} $. Apart from being positive and symmetric, we do not impose any further constraints on the operator $ T $: neither its closedness nor the density of its domain is assumed. Moreover, our arguments remain valid in both real or complex Hilbert spaces.

A coalition in a graph $ G = (V,E) $ consists of two disjoint sets $ V_1 $ and $ V_2 $ of vertices, such that neither $ V_1 $ nor $ V_2 $ is a dominating set, but the union $ V_1 ∪ V_2 $ is a dominating set of $ G $. The local antimagic (total) chromatic number, denoted $ χ_{la} (G) $ (respectively $ χ_{lat} (G)$ ), is the minimum number of induced colors taken over local antimagic (total) labeling of $ G $. We provide a short proof that every graph $ G $ is local antimagic total. The proof provides sharp upper bound to $ χ_{lat} (G) $. We then determined the exact $ χ_{lat} (G) $, where $ G $ is a complete bipartite graph, a path, or the Cartesian product of two cycles. Consequently, the $ χ_{la} (G ∨ K_1) $ is also obtained. Moreover, we determined the $ χ_{la} (G ∨ K_1) $ and hence the $χ_{lat} (G) $ for a class of 2-regular graphs $ G $ (possibly with a path). The work of this paper also provides many open problems on $ χ_{lat} (G) $. We also conjecture that each graph $ G $ of order at least 3 has $ χ_{lat} (G) ≤ χ_{la} (G) $.

In this note we explore the structure of the diffusion metric of Coifman-Lafon determined by fractional dyadic Laplacians. Opis:

The purpose of this paper is to study the oscillatory properties of solutions to a class of delay differential equations of even order. We focus on criteria that exclude decreasing positive solutions. As in this paper, this type of solution emerges when considering the noncanonical case of even equations. By finding a better estimate of the ratio between the Kneser solution with and without delay, we obtain new constraints that ensure that all solutions to the considered equation oscillate. The new findings improve some previous findings in the literature.

Opis:

For any $ n ∈ \mathbb{N} $, the n-subdivision of a graph $ G $ is a simple graph $ G^\frac{1}{n} $ which is constructed by replacing each edge of $ G $ with a path of length n. The m-th power of $ G $ is a graph, denoted by $ G^m $, with the same vertices of $ G $, where two vertices of $ G^m $ are adjacent if and only if their distance in $ G $ is at most m. In [M.N. Iradmusa, On colorings of graph fractional powers, Discrete Math. 310 (2010), no. 10-11, 1551-1556] the m-th power of the n-subdivision of $ G $, denoted by $ G^\frac{m}{n} $ is introduced as a fractional power of $ G $. The incidence chromatic number of $ G $, denoted by $ χ_i(G) $, is the minimum integer k such that $ G $ has an incidence k-coloring. In this paper, we investigate the incidence chromatic number of some fractional powers of graphs and prove the correctness of the incidence coloring conjecture for some powers of graphs.

Opis:

In this work, we study a one-equation turbulence k-epsilon model that governs fluid flows through permeable media. The model problem under consideration here is derived from the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations by the application of a time-averaging operator used in the k-epsilon modeling and a volume-averaging operator that is characteristic of modeling unsteady porous media flows. For the associated initial- and boundary-value problem, we prove the existence of suitable weak solutions (average velocity field and turbulent kinetic energy) in the space dimensions of physics interest.

Let $ A $ be a bounded linear operator in a complex separable Hilbert space, $ A^∗ $ be its adjoint one and $ A_I := (A − A^∗)//(2i) $. Assuming that $A_I $ is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator, we investigate perturbations of the imaginary parts of the eigenvalues of $ A $. Our results are formulated in terms of the “extended” eigenvalue sets in the sense introduced by T. Kato. Besides, we refine the classical Weyl inequality $ \Sigma_{k=1}^\infty (Im \lambda_k (A))^2 ≤ N_2^2 (A_I) $, where $ λk(A) (k = 1, 2, . . .) $ are the eigenvalues of $ A $ and $ N_2(·) $ is the Hilbert-Schmidt norm. In addition, we discuss applications of our results to the Jacobi operators.

In this paper, we study the oscillatory behavior of the solutions of a first-order difference equation with non-monotone retarded argument and nonnegative coefficients, based on an iterative procedure. We establish some oscillation criteria, involving lim sup, which achieve a marked improvement on several known conditions in the literature. Two examples, numerically solved in MAPLE software, are also given to illustrate the applicability and strength of the obtained conditions.

Opis:

In this paper, we combine the local linear approach to the relative error regression estimation method to build a new estimator of the regression operator when the response variable is subject to random right censoring. We establish the uniform almost sure consistency with rate over a compact set of the proposed estimator. Numerical studies, firstly on simulated data, then on a real data set concerning the death times of kidney transplant patients, were conducted. These practical studies clearly show the superiority of the new estimator compared to competitive estimators.

Opis:

The weakening of strong textures in Mg alloys is a crucial factor in obtaining good quality final products that are less anisotropic. Considerable attention has been focused on experiments to find the optimal chemical composition of alloys or processing conditions. However, to reduce time-consuming experiments, texture simulations can help in specifying future research directions. In the present work, the texture evolution in rolled Mg and its alloys was studied using the viscoplastic self-consistent model. The texture simulations presented in the study cover unidirectional rolling, reverse rolling, and cross rolling of Mg and its alloys to check if the change in deformation path has an impact on the activation of non-basal slip systems. The results obtained in the study may help to design the best processing technology and reduce the mechanical anisotropy of magnesium alloys. Slip systems such as basal, prismatic, and pyramidal were taken into consideration. To reflect the effect of alloying elements on hardening, different values for critical resolved shear stress were considered. Pole figures and slip system activity were investigated to understand the texture evolution during rolling as the deformation path changes. It was found that cross rolling may be the most effective processing technology to reduce strong textures during the rolling of Mg alloys. To activate non-basal systems, critical resolved shear stresses and the Schmid factor must be modified. The former can be changed by increasing the processing temperature, proper alloying elements, or change in the strain rate sensitivity; the latter by changing the deformation path.

Opis:

The fracture of shape memory alloys is distinct from that of conventional metals, owing to the coexistence and interaction of multiple special features such as martensitic transformation, dislocation-induced plasticity, thermomechanical coupling and others. In this paper, the impact of thermomechanical behavior upon the crack initiation of a NiTi shape memory alloy under Mode I loading is investigated numerically and verified experimentally. A constitutive model incorporating phase transformation, plasticity and thermomechanical coupling is established. Via backward Euler integration and finite-element implementation, the longitudinal strain, martensite volume fraction and temperature field in the vicinity of the crack tip are furnished. The effects of grain size and loading rate on J-integral are revealed. The grain size dependence of crack initiation is non-monotonic. For the samples with grain sizes of 1500 nm, 18 nm and 10 nm, the shielding effect takes place in front of the crack. Additionally, the anti-shielding effect is detected for samples with grain sizes of 80 nm and 42 nm. The parametric study shows that loading rate imposes limited influence on J-integral, which is attributed to a small scale transformation. The decrement of yield stress and the increment of transformation hardening modulus can alleviate the anti-shielding effect and arouse the shielding effect upon crack initiation. The presented results shed light on the design and fabrication of high toughness phase transformable materials.

In this paper, a three-dimensional micromechanical-based constitutive model is proposed to describe the temperature-dependent performance of a cyclic deformed superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy. The dominant texture of the specimen is prescribed as <111> direction along the longitudinal direction. Apart from martensitic transformation, various mechanisms regarding superelastic degradation are taken into consideration. In order to be extended from the single-crystal scale to the polycrystalline version, the constitutive model is implemented into finite element software. It is verified that the measured cyclic response of a superelastic NiTi is well reproduced by the presented approach. Furthermore, the predicting capability of the proposed model is verified by simulating the mechanical behavior of NiTi tube subjected to cyclic bending.

In this paper we propose a new mathematical model describing the deformations of an isotropic nonlinear elastic body with variable exponent in dynamic regime. The median location problem concerns finding locations of one or several new facilities that minimize the overall weighted distances from the existing to the new facilities. We address the problem of locating one new facility with a radius r on networks. Furthermore, the radius r is flexible and the objective function is the conic combination of the traditional 1-median function and the value r. We call this problem an extensive 1-median problem with radius on networks. To solve the problem, we first induce the so-called finite dominating set, that contains all points on the underlying network and radius values which are candidate for the optimal solution of the problem. This helps to develop a combinatorial algorithm that solves the problem on a general network G = (V,E) in O(|E||V|³) time. We also consider the underlying problem with improved algorithm on trees. Based the convexity of the objective function with variable radius, we develop a linear time algorithm to find an extensive 1-median with radius on the underlying tree.

The main objective of this work was to characterize the viscoelastic properties of additively manufactured Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene based on tensile stress relaxation tests. The stress relaxation measurements were conducted with a temperature range of 25–100°C. The two-layer viscoplastic constitutive model was adopted to describe the elastic and viscous behavior of the investigated material. The model parameters were calibrated using an inverse analysis and stress relaxation data. The model’s predictive capabilities were assessed by comparing the model predictions with experimental data not included in the calibration process.

Początki Kopalni Soli „Bochnia” sięgają 1248 r. Na przestrzeni wieków zmieniała się jej struktura, sposób eksploatacji, a także przeznaczenie, a sami górnicy byli w Polsce pionierami w kwestii sposobu wydobycia oraz zastosowanych technik. Przez setki lat wydrążono kilkanaście szybów, a pod Bochnią powstał labirynt chodników i korytarzy – swoiste miasto pod miastem. Ze względu na wyczerpywanie się złoża oraz coraz to większe koszty zaprzestano wydobycia, a ostatni kruch soli wyjechał na powierzchnię w 1990 r. Od tego czasu przedsiębiorstwo czyni starania mające na celu ochronę dziedzictwa przyrodniczego i historycznego przez zabezpieczanie wyrobisk oraz udostępnianie ich do zwiedzania rzeszy turystów.
The beginnings of the “Bochnia” Salt Mine date back to 1248. Over the centuries, its structure, methods of operation and purpose have all changed, with its miners being pioneers in Poland with regard to the method of extraction and the technologies used. Over hundreds of years, several shafts have been excavated, and a maze of galleries created near Bochnia, creating something like a town outside and underneath the city. Due to the depletion of the deposit and increasing costs, mining was stopped, and the last lump of salt came to the surface in 1990. Since that time the company has been making efforts to protect the natural and historical heritage by securing the workings and making them available for sightseeing by tourists.

Opis:

This article deals with the first hitting times of a Bessel process to a square-root boundary. We obtain the explicit form of the distribution function of the hitting time by means of zeros of the confluent hypergeometric function with respect to the first parameter. In deducing the distribution function, the time that a radial Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process reaches a certain point is very useful and plays an important role. We also give its distribution function in the case that the starting point is closer to the origin than the arrival site.

Opis:

The choice of the lattice sites to be reoriented in the Monte Carlo Potts algorithm for grain growth simulation is repeated in a non-homogeneous way. Therefore, some grains are favorably growing than others. This fact may seriously affect the simulation results. So a modified MC method is presented. Lattice sites are selected for reorientation one by one following their positions in the matrix in each Monte Carlo step (mcs). This approach ensures that the various selections of one lattice site within every mcs are eliminated, and no favorable growth of grains at the expense of others. The calculation time considerably decreases. The effect of real-time and physical temperature on the grain growth kinetics is discussed.

We generalize certain well known orthogonal decompositions of model spaces and obtain similar decompositions for the wider class of shifted model spaces, allowing us to establish conditions for near invariance of the latter with respect to certain operators which include, as a particular case, the backward shift S*. In doing so, we illustrate the usefulness of obtaining appropriate decompositions and, in connection with this, we prove some results on model spaces which are of independent interest. We show moreover how the invariance properties of the kernel of an operator T, with respect to another operator, follow from certain commutation relations between the two operators involved.

This paper presents an overview of the applications of computational intelligence techniques, viz. artificial neural networks, fuzzy inference systems, and genetic algorithms, for the design of biomaterials with improved performance. These techniques are basically used for developing data-driven models and for optimization. The paper introduces the domain of biomaterials and how they can be designed using computational intelligence techniques. Then a brief description of the tools is made, followed by the applications of the tools in various domains of biomaterials. The applications range in all classes of materials ranging from alloys to composites. There are examples of applications for the surface treatment of biomaterials, materials for drug delivery systems, materials for scaffolds and even in implant design. It is found the tools can be effectively used for designing new and improved biomaterials.

Opis:

The main goal of this work is the integration of in-house software with commercial numerical software based on the finite element method (FEM). The main idea is to develop a universal interface to perform process simulations with multiscale models. The interface allows the combination of external procedures with commercial software with minimum programmer’s work putting in integration. As an example, the model of material recrystallization of steel was implemented, added to the commercial application, and the software was tested for a process defined as a sequence of compression and cooling. The material model takes into consideration each type of recrystallization that occurs during a sequence of thermal and mechanical processing such as static recrystallization (SRX), dynamic recrystallization (DRX), and meta-dynamic recrystallization (MDRX). It allows the prediction of recrystallized volume fraction (X) and grain growth on each step of numerical simulation for each Gauss point in the computation domain. The presented multiscale model of process sequences not only allows to calculate microscale model parameters such as grain growth and recrystallized volume fraction, but also reflects the impact of the microscale model on macroscale parameters.

By using the Mountain Pass Theorem, they prove the existence of positive radial solutions for small values of λ.

Opis:

This paper concerns a viscoelastic Kirchhoff-type equation with the dispersive term, internal damping, and logarithmic nonlinearity. We prove the local existence of a weak solution via a modified lemma of contraction of the Banach fixed-point theorem. Although the uniqueness of a weak solution is still an open problem, we proved uniqueness locally for specifically suitable exponents. Furthermore, we established a result for local existence without guaranteeing uniqueness, stating a contraction lemma.

Opis:

Motivated by applications, we consider new operator-theoretic approaches to conditional mean embedding (CME). Our present results combine a spectral analysis-based optimization scheme with the use of kernels, stochastic processes, and constructive learning algorithms. For initially given non-linear data, we consider optimization-based feature selections. This entails the use of convex sets of kernels in a construction of optimal feature selection via regression algorithms from learning models. Thus, with initial inputs of training data (for a suitable learning algorithm), each choice of a kernel K in turn yields a variety of Hilbert spaces and realizations of features. A novel aspect of our work is the inclusion of a secondary optimization process over a specified convex set of positive definite kernels, resulting in the determination of “optimal” feature representations.

In this paper, the effect of the preliminary processing of a substrate on the properties of a grown heterostructure is investigated. It is shown that the growth of an epitaxial layer on a buffer layer after preliminary annealing (before the growth) makes it possible to decrease the value of mismatch-induced stress. An analytical approach has been introduced for the analysis of mass and heat transfer in a multilayer structure accounting for mismatch-induced stress.

Opis:

A finite-strain constitutive model of a superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy is proposed in this paper. Via backward Euler implicit integration scheme and the incorporation of material softening, the model is implemented into finite element code to reproduce a Lüders like deformation of a superelastic NiTi. The simulation results are in agreement with the experimental results, indicating that the constitutive model can reasonably predict the mechanical behavior of a superelastic NiTi. A parametric study further verifies that the magnitude of softening modulus has a significant effect on the stress-strain response and Lüders-like deformation of a superelastic NiTi.

Opis:

Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations have been used to investigate the response of semi-crystalline polymers in nanoindentation tests, using polyethylene (PE) as an example. To that purpose, semi-crystalline simulation boxes of linear PE with various chain lengths up to C2000 were created by homogeneous nucleation during the non-isothermal cooling of melts. The final crystallinity depended on the chain length and the cooling rate used and could be estimated using various parameters like density, fraction of bonds in trans conformation, and energy terms. The simulation boxes were transferred into surface models and subjected to nanoindentation tests using non equilibrium MD. This allowed the deformation behaviour of the material to be analysed directly. Strong dependencies on the crystallinity of the PE were found, which underlines the importance of considering crystallinity when investigating the mechanical properties of semi-crystalline polymers by means of simulations.

Opis:

Instead of the classical finite element (FE) based microstructure simulation, a Fast Fourier transform (FFT) based microstructure simulation, introduced by Moulinec and Suquet (1994, 1998), also enables the computation of highly resolved microstructural fields. In this context, the microscopic boundary value problem is captured by the Lippmann-Schwinger equation and solved by using Fast Fourier transforms (FFT) and fixed-point iterations. To decrease the computational effort of the fixed-point solver, Kochmann et al. (2019) introduced a model order reduction (MOR) technique based on solving the Lippmann-Schwinger equation in Fourier space with a reduced set of frequencies. Thereby, the accuracy of this MOR technique depends on the number of used frequencies and the choice of frequencies that are considered within the simulation. Instead of the earlier proposed fixed (Kochmann et al., 2019) or geometrically adapted (Gierden et al., 2021b) sampling patterns, we propose a sampling pattern which is updated after each load step based on the current strain. To show the precision of such a strain-based sampling pattern, an elasto-plastic two-phase composite microstructure is investigated.

Opis:

The paper deals with the problem of optimal material distribution inside the provided design area. Optimization based on deterministic and stochastic algorithms is used to obtain the best result on the basis of the proposed objective function and constraints. The optimization of the shock absorber is used as an example of the described methods. One of the main difficulties addressed is the manufacturability of the optimized part intended for the forging process. Additionally, nonlinear buckling simulation with the use of the finite element method is used to solve the misuse case of shock absorber compression, where the shape of the optimized part has a key role in the total strength of the automotive damper. All of that, together with the required design precision, creates the nontrivial constrained optimization problem solved using the parametric, implicit geometry representation and a combination of stochastic and deterministic algorithms used with parallel design processing. Two methods of optimization are examined and compared in terms of the total amount of function calls, final design mass, and feasibility of the resultant design. Also, the amount of parameters used for the implicit geometry representation is greatly reduced compared to existing schemes presented in the literature. The problem addressed in this article is strongly inspired by the actual industrial example of the mass minimization process, but it is more focused on the actual manufacturability of the resultant component and admissible solving time. Commercially accessible software combined with authors’ procedures is used to resolve the material distribution task, which makes the proposed method universal and easily adapted to other fields of the optimization of mechanical elements.

The continuous casting machine considered in this study is used to cast both blooms and beam blanks. The secondary cooling can be divided into cooling zone z0, cooling zone z1, cooling zone z2, and cooling zone z3. For each geometry, there are specific molds, z0, z1, z2 (sprays and support rollers), which need to be replaced when there is a geometry shift. The changing of the cooling segments brings security risks for the operators and reduces the continuous casting availability. Therefore, it is desired to have a common z2 for both blooms and beam blanks to reduce operational risk exposure and increase the machine production rate. For this to be possible, it is necessary to assess the temperature and resistance of the solidified skin, the effects of thermal stresses, ferrostatic pressure, and contact stresses. This work is the first step in this study. A thermo-mechanical model was developed for both geometries. The thermal model was verified by temperature measurement and shell measurements of blackouts. Finally, the results were analyzed and compared.

Opis:

Current solutions to convert the axis-symmetric compression test (ACT) data to flow data ignore the barrelling deformation in the sample. This work presents a solution for the test which accounts for the sample’s barrelling by discretising it into a finite number of layers of different radii. The solution assumes a constant and sliding friction at the anvil-sample interface. The sample’s flow behaviour is identified by combining a recent kinematic solution of the test, Prandtl–Reuss–Mises’s equations and a slab-analysis of the layers. It also involves an averaging of the effective plastic stresses developed in the individual layers. The solution is verified for a special case of no-barrelling which matches the currently used solution.

Opis:

The paper focuses on adapting the random cellular automata (RCA) method concept for the unconstrained grain growth simulation providing digital microstructure morphologies for subsequent multi-scale simulations. First, algorithms for the generation of initial RCA cells alignment are developed, and then the influence of cells density in the computational domain on grain growth is discussed. Three different approaches are proposed based on the regular, hexagonal, and random cells’ alignment in the former case. The importance of cellular automata (CA) cell neighborhood definition on grain growth model predictions is also highlighted. As a research outcome, random cellular automata model parameters that can replicate grain growth without artifacts are presented. It is identified that the acceptable microstructure morphology of the solid material is obtained when a mean number of RCA cells in the investigated neighborhood is higher than ten.

Opis:

The results of the calculations of the local heat transfer coefficient HTC and a heat flux HF on the face of a cylindrical sample made of 1.0503 steel are presented. The sample was cooled from a temperature of approx. 930°C in a mineral oil having a temperature equal to 50°C. The experiments were performed for three speeds of the oil stream (0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 m/s). The oil stream was directed perpendicularly to the cooled surface. The temperature of each sample was measured with 4 thermocouples and recorded with a frequency of 10 Hz. The maximum values of HTC always occurred in the axis of the sample and were in the range of 8000 to 10,000 W/(m² K). The results are presented in the form of useful graphs showing the dependence of HTC and HF on the surface temperature for various velocities of cooling oil. The calculations were made with self-developed software using the inverse solution of the boundary heat conduction problem.

Opis:

Explosive welding is a complex process involving various phenomena influenced by a series of parameters in a noticeably short span of time which affect the morphology and eventually the quality of the weld. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the influence of these parameters on material behavior with a series of numerical simulations based on a meshless approach. The developed model is based on the SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) method and is used to investigate Ti/Cu system behavior as a case study. Examples of the resulting temperatures and pressures as a function of process setup are presented within the paper. The results obtained demonstrate how weld morphology is related to the process conditions.

Opis:

The continuous development of coal extraction technology in hard coal mines, including the increased efficiency of the machinery and equipment used in mining, encourages manufacturers to increase the power of these machines. This also entails an increase in their weight. Transporting these machines to their destination, especially to the face, is the task of suspended transport systems, i.e.: a suspended railway system. The proposed solution consists in welding flat bars to the flanges of the I-beam, which will increase the unit weight of the load that can be carried by each car of the transport set moving along the railway. This paper contains a technical description of the modified rail and basic strength calculations, the results of which confirm the advisability of its use.
Ciągły rozwój technologii wydobycia urobku w kopalniach węgla kamiennego, w tym zwiększanie wydajności maszyn i urządzeń stosowanych w górnictwie, stymuluje producentów tych maszyn do zwiększania ich mocy. Pociąga to za sobą również wzrost ich masy. Dostarczenie tych maszyn do miejsca przeznaczenia, szczególnie do przodka, jest zadaniem transportu podwieszonego, tj. kolejki podwieszonej. Proponowane rozwiązanie polega na tym, że do półek dwuteownika specjalnego przyspawano płaskowniki, które pozwolą na zwiększenie jednostkowej masy ładunku, możliwej do przewiezienia przez każdy z wózków jezdnych zestawu transportowego poruszającego się po trasie kolejki. Artykuł zawiera opis techniczny szyny o zmodyfikowanej konstrukcji oraz podstawowe obliczenia wytrzymałościowe, których wyniki potwierdzają celowość jej stosowania.

Opis:

The interval function and the induced path function are two well studied class of set functions of a connected graph having interesting properties and applications to convexity, metric graph theory. Both these functions can be framed as special instances of a general set function termed as a transit function defined on the Cartesian product of a non-empty set V to the power set of V satisfying the expansive, symmetric and idempotent axioms. In this paper, we propose a set of independent first order betweenness axioms on an arbitrary transit function and provide characterization of the interval function of Ptolemaic graphs and the induced path function of chordal graphs in terms of an arbitrary transit function. This in turn gives new characterizations of the Ptolemaic and chordal graphs.

Opis:

The crossing number $ \text{cr} (G) $ of a graph $ G $ is the minimum number of edge crossings over all drawings of $ G $ in the plane. In the paper, we extend known results concerning crossing numbers of join products of four small graphs with paths and cycles. The crossing numbers of the join products $ G^∗ + P_n $ and $ G^∗ + C_n $ for the disconnected graph $ G^∗ $ consisting of the complete tripartite graph $ K_{1,1,2} $ and one isolated vertex are given, where $ P_n $ and $ C_n $ are the path and the cycle on $ n $ vertices, respectively. In the paper also the crossing numbers of $ H^∗ + P_n $ and $ H^∗ + C_n $ are determined, where $ H^∗ $ is isomorphic to the complete tripartite graph $ K_{1,1,3} $. Finally, by adding new edges to the graphs $ G^∗ $ and $ H^∗ $, we are able to obtain crossing numbers of join products of two other graphs $ G_1 $ and $ H_1 $ with paths and cycles.

A technique is developed to establish a new oscillation criterion for a first-order linear difference equation with several delays and non-negative coefficients.
