Aim: The aim of this paper is to define the correlation between experiencing personal well-being and manifestations of spirituality of an individual.  Methods: The study involved the citizens of Chernihiv (average age – 33.2 years old): 96 people in total, 40 men and 56 women. The following methods were used: a) to measure the components of personal well-being – Satisfaction with Life scale by E. Diener, Psychological well-being scale by С. Riff, Questionnaire of parameters of subjective social well-being by T. Danylchenko; b) to measure the spiritual component – EPU Plus (Egoism - Personal Uniqueness) by L. Z. Levit, Methodology of measuring social interaction (mentality aspect) by G. L. Voronin. Results: The source of experiencing personal well-being is positive health (physical abilities, absence of physical limitations). Factors that decrease personal well-being are low level of tolerance and the pursuit of pleasure. Personal well-being is ensured by belief about collaboration and experiencing positive health as a state of readiness for activity. Psychological well-being has a negative correlation with basic egoism (the pursuit of pleasure) and a positive one with social egoism (ability to comply one’s needs with the group interests, following social rules and norms). Subjective social well-being relates to the highest egoism (unique self-realization, realization of existing potential in an acceptable way). The orientation towards achieving personal or public goals determines the peculiarities of experiencing well-being in the eudaemonic and hedonistic dimensions.

Research interest in topics such as happiness, the quality of life, and the experience of well-being has dramatically increased in the past four decades. Global measures of Subjective Well-Being (SWB) have long held a prominent position in this burgeoning body of research (Diener, 1984; Pavot, 2008). Despite their widespread acceptance and use, the validity and utility of global measures of SWB have been challenged at several levels of analysis. These critiques have ranged from the conceptual basis of SWB (e.g. Ryan & Deci 2001; Ryff, 1989; Ryff & Singer, 2008) to very specifi c concerns about the context of the assessment situation and the cognitive processes involved in formulating a response to such measures (Pavot & Diener, 1993a; Schimmack & Oishi, 2005; Schwarz, & Strack, 1999). The purpose of this paper is to review and address some of the more prominent critiques of global measures of SWB, and to discuss methodological procedures and strategies for minimizing threats to the validity and increasing the utility of global measures of SWB.

Introduction: The aim of the presented research was to check whether there is a connection between teachers’ self-efficacy and their psychological well-being from a holistic (hedonic and eudaimonic) perspective. Method: The study involved 100 teachers who were asked to fill in the following research tools with proven psychometric properties: the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and the Psychological Well-being Scale. Results: The obtained data confirm that there is a connection between self-efficacy belief, and hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. The degree of professional promotion grades modifies the relationships considered. Conclusions: The psychological well-being of teachers is significantly associated with their evaluation of efficacy, which may have a positive impact on the effectiveness of teachers’ professional functioning and the achievements of their students.

Background. A holistic approach to health requires the development of tools that would allow to measure the inner world of individuals within its physical, mental and social dimensions. Objectives. To create the Physical, Mental and Social Well-being scale (PMSW-21) that allows a holistic representation of various dimensions of well-being in such a way as they are perceived by the individuals and how affected their health. Material and methods. The study was conducted on the sample of 406 inhabitants of Warsaw involving in the Social Participation in Health Reform project. The PMSW-21 scale included: headache, tiredness, abdominal pain, palpitation, joint pain, backache, sleep disturbance (physical domain), anxiety, guiltiness, helplessness, hopelessness, sadness, self-dissatisfaction, hostility (mental domain), security, communicability, protection, loneliness, rejection, sociability and appreciation (social domain). The five criterial variables of health and seven of life experiences were adopted to assess the discriminative power of the PMSW-21 scale. Results. The total well-being scale as well as its physical, mental and social domains showed high reliability (Cronbach a 0.81, 0.77, 0.90, 0.72, respectively). The analysis confirmed the construct validity. All the items stronger correlated with their own domain than with the others (ranges for physical: 0.41 – 0.55, mental: 0.49 – 0.80 and social: 0.31 – 0.50). The total scale demonstrate high sensitivity; it significantly differentiated almost all criterial variables. Physical domain showed high sensitivity for health as well as for negative life events variables, while the mental and social domains were more sensitive for life events. Conclusions. The analysis confirmed the usefulness of PMSW-21 scale for measure the holistic well-being. The reliability of the total scale and its domains, construct validity and sensitivity for health and life determinants were at acceptable level.
Wprowadzenie. Holistyczne podejście do zdrowia wymaga stworzenia narzędzia, które umożliwiłoby mierzenie wewnętrznego świata jednostki w jego fizycznym, psychicznym i społecznym wymiarze. Cel. Opracowanie skali Fizycznego, Psychicznego i Społecznego Samopoczucie (PMSW-21), która umożliwi przedstawienie w sposób całościowy różnych wymiarów samopoczucia w taki sposób, jak są one postrzegane przez jednostki i jak wpływają na ich zdrowie. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono na próbie 406 mieszkańców Warszawy biorących udział w projekcie Partycypacja Społeczna w Reformowaniu Zdrowia. Skala PMSW-21 obejmowała: ból głowy, przemęczenie, ból brzucha, kołatanie serca, ból stawów, ból pleców, trudności w zasypianiu (domena fizyczna), niepokój, poczucie winy, bezradność, beznadziejność, smutek, niezadowolenie z siebie, wrogość (domena psychiczna), bezpieczeństwo, komunikatywność, ochronę, samotność, wykluczenie, towarzyskość i szacunek (domena społeczna). Do oceny mocy dyskryminacyjnej skali PMSW-21 przyjęto pięć zmiennych kryterialnych dotyczące zdrowia i siedem dotyczących doświadczeń życiowych. Wyniki. Zarówno całkowita skala, jak i jej domeny fizyczna psychiczna i społeczna wykazały wysoką rzetelność (Cronbach a odpowiednio 0.80, 0.77, 0.90, 0.72). Analiza potwierdziła trafność konstruktu. Wszystkie pozycje silniej korelowały z własną domeną niż z pozostałymi (zakresy dla fizycznej: 0.41 – 0.55, psychicznej: 0.49 – 0.80 i społecznej: 0.31 – 0.50). Całkowita skala wykazała wysoką czułość, znacząco różnicowała niemal wszystkie zmienne kryterialne. Domena fizyczna wykazała wysoką czułość zarówno w przypadku zmiennych kryterialnych dotyczących zdrowia jak i negatywnych zdarzeń życiowych, natomiast domeny psychiczna i społeczna były bardziej czułe w przypadku zdarzeń życiowych. Wnioski. Analiza potwierdziła użyteczność skali PMSW-21 do całościowego mierzenia samopoczucia. Rzetelność skali całkowitej i jej domen, trafność konstruktu oraz czułość w odniesieniu do uwarunkowań zdrowotnych i życiowych była na akceptowalnym poziomie.

The aim of this paper is to define the correlation between social evaluation and personal well-being.  Methods. The study involved the citizens of Chernihiv (average age – 31.5 years old): 91 people in total, 37 men and 54 women. The following methods were used: the scale of satisfaction with life scale by Diener, as adapted by Leontiev and Osin (2008); questionnaire of parameters of subjective social well-being by Danylchenko (2015); subjective life satisfaction scale by Lybyna (2008), questionnaire on the peculiarities of evaluation by other people by Danylchenko (2019). Results and conclusion. In Ukrainian society, the most important reference groups are parents and a spouse, while friends and colleagues play a comparatively smaller role. All these groups are more likely to give positive and neutral social evaluations. However, negative evaluations are more likely to come from colleagues and friends, and positive – from family. There are differences in indicators of subjective well-being, social acceptance (as a measure of social well-being) and competence between people who are assessed predominantly positively and predominantly negatively. Subjective well-being is reduced reproaches from reference groups. Praise contributes to the enhancement of subjective social well-being Comparison with other people and the existence of a role model reduces psychological well-being. The filter for the perception of positive and negative evaluations from the social environment is a person’s self-acceptance.

Objectives: This paper aims to investigate the possibility of constructing a hybrid version of well-being and making an attempt at its operationalisation. Research Design & Methods: The theoretical framework is based on the capability approach of Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, while the empirical part of the paper refers to a fuzzy set theory. Findings: We propose three measures of hybrid well-being, referring to (1) the minimum formula, (2) a mobility index, and (3) the concept of internalities. Implications / Recommendations: We are convinced that it is not only possible to create a philosophically informed measure of well-being, but also that this kind of measure can be crucial in the context of public policy due to its sensitivity to autonomy and adaptation problems. Contribution / Value Added: Findings of this research can be seen as an attempt to merge philosophical investigation with economics theories and applications.

Schwartz created a circle of values reflecting people’s individual systems of goals and motivations. These values can be grouped into different dimensions: self-protection versus self-growth and concentration on others versus concentration on self. In the present study, we analysed how these dimensions are related to hedonic and eudaimonic well-being; N=747 participants, representative of the general Polish population, completed the Portraits Value Questionnaire, Satisfaction with Life Scale and Questionnaire for Eudaimonic Well-being (online study). A series of models were tested using structural equation modelling. We found that concern for self and self-protection values were related to higher hedonic well-being, whereas concern for others and growth values were related to its lower levels. However, growth and concern for others were positively linked to eudaimonic well-being, but they may also positively and indirectly impact hedonic well-being (suppression effect). These results suggest that some values are associated with a feeling of self-realisation at the cost of current hedonic well-being.

According to the most popular conceptualization of materialism by Richins and Dawson it consists of three components: acquisition centrality, acquisition as the pursuit of happiness and possession -defined success. They are usually combined and an overall indicator of materialism is used commonly in various studies. In the article the three components are examined separately. Differences in their nature are revealed in a theoretical analysis, whereas in two empirical studies the ways they connect with well -being are presented. The results show that the overall materialism explains much less variance of well -being than the three components taken separately. Of the three the possession-defined happiness is the most detrimental to all aspects of well -being. The possession-defined success does not connect with well -being at all. Finally, acquisition centrality elevates hedonic and psychological well -being. The conclusion is that the modest effect of materialism on well -being, usually identified in various studies, is probably at least partly due to conflicting forces existing within the construct.

The paper provides an overview of the information sources, methodology and main findings of the research of quality of life and poverty using indicators of subjective well-being applied by state statistics agencies in Ukraine. The paper describes the system of indicators for self-evaluation of the attained level of well-being, the level of satisfaction from meeting the basic living needs, and the limitations in consumption abilities of selected population groups due to hard conditions. In addition, methodological approaches in national statistics practice are discussed for the case of analysis of economic deprivation and for infrastructure development as indicator of geographic accessibility of services and non-geographic barriers causing the deprivation of access. Also, this paper reviews the factors that underlie the deprivations and define the percentage of population that is particularly affected by multiple deprivation in Ukraine. It covers the data on dynamics and analyses the distribution of deprivation by different population group, for several years. Finally, it describes further steps on the way to enhance the information capacity of subjective wellbeing studies, particularly as regards implementation of the contemporary approaches in international perspective, including Europe.

This paper draws on experience of the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) programme to measure national well-being, particularly the high-profile element of the programme in which subjective well-being measures have been collected and published since April 2011. We reflect on drivers of the ONS work and on how these have given rise to interest both in national well-being – the Beyond GDP agenda – and in the use of subjective well-being measures (self-reported, personal well-being) in public policy. Although we touch briefly on measurement and analysis issues, we mainly concentrate on user requirements, the international context, and political, policy, public and business use of well-being data.

An important aspect of human development in midlife is, according to E. Erikson’s theory, the successful resolution of the crisis between generativity and stagnation. Generativity is understood as focusing one’s energy on productivity and creativity – the creation of new works and ideas dedicated to future generations. It is assumed that generativity results from personal needs and constitutes a response to the social expectations directed at individuals. Concern for the next generation does not go hand-in-hand with concern for the personal development of a person in midlife and this imbalance may lead to a psychological discomfort and a sense of martyrdom. Accordingly, it can therefore be concluded that a person focusing on the well-being of the social environment and neglecting her/himself is incapable of feeling that they are a subject that manages their fate and makes decisions enabling them to achieve personal psychological well-being. It could, therefore, be expected that the fulfilment of generative goals may lead to a reduction in the psychological well-being of a representative of middle adulthood. Empirical data has not confirmed this expectation.

In order to measure and monitor a country’s well-being and progress, a particular path has to be followed, leading from concept to measure, to interpretation. The process requires: (a) defining the concepts to measure and monitor and their conceptual dimensions, together with the ambits (domains) in which the concepts are observed and monitored; (b) developing/selecting indicators; this requires the identification also of the appropriate techniques aimed at their synthesis; (c) defining the perspectives through which the indicators should be observed and the consistent organization of the monitoring process; (d) defining the interpretative/explanatory models, which actually link the obtained results to the previously defined concept. The widely accepted main concepts defining the progress of a country (or community) are the well-being of individuals (quality of life), its fair distribution (equity), and sustainable promotion (sustainability). The paper aims at (a) clarifying different issues concerning the well-being of societies by providing a conceptual instrument allowing anyone to orient themselves among all the emerging proposals and to distinguish between serious and propagandistic ones; (b) unravelling the primary methodological aspects and issues that should be considered in constructing indicators.

Despite the two concepts, community risk and community well-bein seem to constitute the two sides of the same coin - community (especially, local community) as a place to live - they rarely coincide with each other in empirical analyses. The main thesis of tkis paper is that analyzing them jointly seems to be fruitful, especially in a policy-oriented evaluation research conducted in the context of community development. Community well-being is, by its very nature, an example of the truly interdisciplinary notion. When defined in terms of happiness and subjecive well-being it becomes the focus of predominantly psychometric approach. Sociologist prevail in attempts to interpret it in terms of quality of life and of social indicators. And economists and statisticians are trying to measure nation-wide material and non-material aspects of well-being with intention to incorporate them into a appropriately re-formulated, or extended, system of nacional account. As a part of these conceptualizations (moving "beyond GDP") some approaches are being developed to include the value produced under non-market activities, including the non-profit organizations or third sector (either through utilizing Satelite Accounts methodology or through the labor market research. However, no much attention is given in such frameworks to well-being conceived as an attribute of a local community. The objective of this paper is two-fold. First is to demonstrate the compexity involved in the relationships in which the concept of well-being remains with local risk and local capital, at the analytical level. Second, how this complex pattern of interaction can contribute conceptually and methodologically to the advancement of the process of integrating social science research in the area of the pro-well-being community development. To create and use the new types of university-community relations in this context seems to be the most promising approach for social scientists, and is recommended here as a way worthwhile to follow.

Dobrobyt społeczno-ekonomiczny to pojęcie złożone, które nie ma w literaturze precyzyjnego i jednoznacznego określenia, stąd trudności jego pomiaru. Wielu polityków, ekonomistów, międzynarodowe instytucje i media próbują wykorzystywać produkt krajowy brutto, czy też do- chód narodowy, jako miernik dobrobytu. Jest to podejście niewłaściwe, gdyż jeden i ten sam miernik nie może poprawnie charakteryzować dwóch różnych merytorycznie agregatów – produk- cji i dobrobytu. W badaniach spoleczno-ekonomicznych podejmowane są próby wprowadzenia alternatywnych, czy też komplementarnych w stosunku do PKB mierników dobrobytu. Trwają poszukiwania formuły, stąd pomiar dobrobytu społeczno-ekonomicznego jest otwartym proble- mem badawczym. Głównym celem referatu jest zaprezentowanie próby pomiaru dobrobytu spo- łeczno-ekonomicznego z wykorzystaniem modelowania miękkiego. W pierwszej części referatu zaprezentowane będą rozważania na podstawie literatury o spo- sobach definiowania i pomiaru dobrobytu społeczno-ekonomicznego. Jednym ze nich jest opraco- wany w ramach Programu Narodów Zjednoczonych d.s. Rozwoju (United Nations Development Programme) wskaźnik rozwoju społecznego HDI (ang. Human Development Index). Wskaźnik HDI jest oparty na trzech podstawowych czynnikach: poziomie zdrowotności, poziomie wykształ- cenia oraz dostępności dóbr materialnych, które decydują o powiększaniu zdolności i możliwości człowieka. Inne podejście jest stosowane w ramach koncepcji trwałego i zrównoważonego rozwo- ju, która zakłada poprawę jakości życia współczesnych i przyszłych pokoleń oraz wskazuje po- trzebę przewartościowania celów rozwojowych z materialnych na niematerialne. Koncepcja zrów- noważonego rozwoju podkreśla trzy aspekty rozwoju: społeczeństwo, gospodarkę i środowisko naturalne, przy czym to ten ostatni element jest bardzo mocno podkreślany. Założenia trwałego i zrównoważonego rozwoju uwzględnione są przy konstrukcji wskaźnika trwałego dobrobytu ekonomicznego ISEW (ang. Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare), bądź jego modyfikacji wskaźnika autentycznego rozwoju GPI (ang. Genuine Progress Indicator). Druga część referatu będzie poświęcona zastosowaniu do badania dobrobytu społeczno- ekonomicznego modelowania miękkiego. Metoda ta pozwala na badanie powiązań między zmien- nymi ukrytymi (niemierzalnymi), czyli zmiennymi nie mającymi jednoznacznych odpowiedników wśród zmiennych obserwowalnych (mierzalnych). W oparciu o opis teoretyczny budowany jest model, który wyjaśnia kształtowanie się wartości badanej zmiennej ukrytej poprzez zależności z jej indykatorami (zmiennymi mierzalnymi), a także poprzez związki z innymi zmiennymi ukry- tymi. W badaniu dobrobytu społeczno-ekonomicznego, oprócz aspektu materialnego, muszą być uwzględnione korzyści wynikające z ochrony zdrowia oraz edukacji. W modelu przyjęto, że do- brobyt społeczno-ekonomiczny jest zależny od poziomu rozwoju gospodarki i jakości środowiska naturalnego. Zbudowany model miękki ma posłużyć do analizy dobrobytu społeczno- ekonomicznego w krajach Unii Europejskiej.

The Psychological Well-Being Scales (PWBS) is a questionnaire designed by Ryff (1989) to mea-sure six dimensions of eudaimonic well-being: self-acceptance, positive relations with others, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, and personal growth. Translated into several dozen languages, this questionnaire is a commonly used instrument for measuring well-being. The article presents the effects of work on the Polish adaptation of two versions of the PWBS: full (84-item) and short (18-item), conducted as a series of four studies with a total sample of 2,035 participants aged 13 to 78.The results confirmed the reliability of the full version of the PWBS and the six-factor structure of well-being. They also confirmed the criterion validity of the questionnaire, reflected in correlations with validation instruments.

A major focus of attention in psychology has been on the consequences and determinants of well-being. Religiosity and personality have both been shown to predict mental health and well-being, but the two predictors have not often been investigated together. In 4 studies involving 7 surveys (total N = 1,530) in various social and religious contexts, the relations among well-being, religious orientation, and personality factors were studied. Results showed that Extraversion was the single strongest correlate of higher levels of subjective and psychological well-being. Religiosity had null or weak positive relationships with well-being, and managed to explain variance in some aspects of positive functioning beyond personality factors. The null or week relationship of religiosity with well-being beyond personality was consistent across the HEXACO and the Big Five models of personality structure. It has been suggested that religion is relatively more important for eudaimonic than for hedonic way of living.

The theoretical and philosophical foundations of human well-being are well-described in psychology research. Within the construct of well-being, psychologists distinguish eudemonic positive aefct and hedonic positive aefct, although they are not only nor mutually exclusive approaches. Empirical findings demonstrate a correlaiton between the general positive aefct and favorable health outcomes. Recent discoveries also show a biological paetrn, which underlines the correlation. Thanks to describing the conserved transcriptional response to adversity (CTRA) mechanism, a new direction of research is emerging, exploring a relationship between profile of gene expression in immune cells and positive aefct. The study aims to examine the role of Self-Forgiveness in shaping the Human Flourishing of the adults. Two hundred fourteen participants (18 to 30 years) comprising 100 males (Mean Age = 22.15(1.61)) and 114 females (Mean Age = 22.00(1.95)) were chosen for the study. Self-forgiveness (Mudgal & Tiwari, 2017a) and Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (Keyes, 2005) were used as the tools. Self-forgiveness comprises Realization & Reparation, Guilt, Attribution and overall self-forgiveness (sum of the first three) while Human Flourishing consists of Hedonic and Eudaimonic (Social plus Psychological) Well-Being. The aggregate of Hedonic and Eudaimonic is overall Human Flourishing. The findings suggested no gender differences in Self-Forgiveness of the participants. Conversely, gender differences were observed in all the dimensions of Human Flourishing in favour of males. Irrespective of gender, Realization & Reparation was positively correlated with Hedonic, Social, Psychological and Eudaimonic Well-Being as well as Human Flourishing except for Guilt and Attribution that showed small positive or negative correlations. Irrespective of gender, Overall Self-Forgiveness correlated positively with all the dimensions of Flourishing. Gender and Realization & Reparation emerged as the significant predictors accounting for significant variance in all the dimensions of Flourishing while Guilt and Attribution did not. The findings suggested that remorse, easy acceptance of wrongdoing, repairing the relationship with self and others, ability to minimize negative emotions towards self, monitoring others’ positive behaviours and acknowledgements of valued and close relationships were the psychological mechanisms that may underlie the predictive strengths of self-forgiveness in regulating flourishing.

The psychological well-being and its perception became a wave of post-existentialism and the de- velopment of the concept of positive psychology, one of the key research problems of contemporary psychology. One can not ignore the dichotomous division of the concept of mental well-being - de- rived from ancient reflection on happiness - into hedonistic and eudaemonist theories (Ryff, 1989). The hedonistic perspective, whose representative was Epicurus, treated happiness as pleasure. On the other hand, the basis of eudaemonic reasoning - represented by Aristotle - was a moral, meaningful life. Eudaymonia is a composition of everything that a man needs for a happy life - with happiness being not the same as pleasure, but without happiness life will not be pleasant. The article presents the main theories of human mental well-being, along with an indication of the directions of research in which they can be used.

The article contains an overview of selected existing indicators of well‐being, mainly from the standpoint of economics. An analysis of classical indicators focusing mostly on material prosperity has been conducted in the first part of the article. Then, the more recent, alternative indicators of well‐being have been cited and briefly reviewed. Those alternative indicators take psychological, social and environmental factors, among others, into consideration. The important idea of sustainable development has also been presented, not only in context of development goals, but also as a concept of living a balanced life with less waste and needless consumption. In the later part, possible directions for measuring well‐being in the future have been presented. It has been noted, that while the classical indicators of well‐being often offer dated and impractical approaches, they prove to be highly useful when combined with analysing other, more contemporary data and indicators, due to the inherent material dimension of satisfying human needs.
Artykuł zawiera przegląd wybranych istniejących wskaźników dobrobytu, głównie z punktu widzenia ekonomii. W pierwszej części artykułu przeprowadzono analizę klasycznych wskaźników skupiających się głównie na dobrobycie materialnym. Następnie przytoczono i krótko omówiono nowsze, alternatywne wskaźniki dobrobytu. Te alternatywne wskaźniki uwzględniają między innymi czynniki psychologiczne, społeczne i środowiskowe. Przedstawiono także ważną ideę zrównoważonego rozwoju, nie tylko w kontekście celów rozwojowych, ale także jako koncepcję zrównoważonego życia z mniejszą ilością odpadów i niepotrzebnej konsumpcji. Zauważono, że choć klasyczne wskaźniki dobrostanu często oferują przestarzałe i niepraktyczne podejście, to jednak okazują się bardzo przydatne w połączeniu z analizą innych, bardziej współczesnych danych i wskaźników, ze względu na nieodłączny materialny wymiar zaspokajania ludzkich potrzeb.

Ostatnio w literaturze przedmiotu często sygnalizuje się problem dzieciństwa w kryzysie, przywołując określenia: „dzieciństwo nadmiaru”, „dzieciństwo cukierkowe”, „pokolenie przesytu”. Aspekt ten zainspirował autorki niniejszego artykułu do sprawdzenia empirycznego, o czym marzą dzieci wychowywane w rodzinach o wysokim statusie ekonomicznym, których potrzeby materialne zaspokajane są ponad miarę. Prezentowane w artykule badania realizowane były w konwencji badań jakościowych z zastosowaniem metody wywiadu wśród uczniów szóstych klas renomowanych prywatnych i społecznych szkół podstawowych w Łodzi.
The material well-being of the family is one of the aspects related to the concept of broadly understood holistic well-being, including psychological well-being. In the literature, the problem of childhood in crisis is often signalled under these terms: childhood of excess, candy childhood, generation of satiety. This inspired the authors of this article to check empirically what children who are raised in families of high economic status and whose material needs are satisfied excessively, dream of (wish for). The research presented in the article was carried out in the convention of qualitative research, using the interview method, among sixth grade students of private and public primary schools in Lodz.

The aim of the article is to present the situation of children in Poland in the light of the analysis of documents of public institutions and non-governmental organizations whose domain of activity is the protection of children’s rights. The context of the analyzes undertaken by the authors is an interdisciplinary current of childhood studies, and in particular the discourses devoted to caring for a child. Nowadays, the most visible discourse of child’s well-being requires observing particular areas of children’s participation in social life and asking questions about the actual situation of the child in our country, development opportunities and difficulties in implementing children’s rights and ensuring its well-being. This paper presents an outline of a new theoretical concept. The Growth Resources Model was designed to grasp the key psychosocial resources that help us develop and flourish. The model consists of three major components: positive autonomy, positive belonging, and positive emotionality. Positive autonomy is defined as a set of an individual’s key psychosocial resources allowing them to cope with reality in a constructive way and to achieve important goals. Positive belonging is defined as a set of key psychosocial resources allowing an individual to build and sustain constructive and satisfactory relations with other people. Finally, positive emotionality is indicated by a dominance of positive (pleasant) emotions over negative (unpleasant) emotions in our personal, subjective experience. The theoretical and empirical background of the model, and its major theoretical assumptions are discussed.
W artykule zaprezentowany jest zarys nowej koncepcji teoretycznej. Model Zasobów Rozwoju powstał w celu uchwycenia kluczowych psychospołecznych zasobów wspierających nasz pomyślny rozwój orazrozkwit. Model składa się ztrzech głównych komponentów: pozytywnej autonomii, pozytywnej przynależności oraz pozytywnej emocjonalności. Pozytywna autonomia zdefiniowana jest jako kluczowe psychospołeczne zasoby jednostki pozwalające jej radzić sobie zrzeczywistością wkonstruktywny sposób oraz osiągać ważne cele. Pozytywna przynależność zdefiniowana jest jako kluczowe psychospołeczne zasoby jednostki pozwalające jej budować oraz utrzymywać konstruktywne isatysfakcjonujące relacje zinnymi. Wreszcie, pozytywna emocjonalność sygnalizowana jest przez przewagę emocji pozytywnych (przyjemnych) nad negatywnymi (nieprzyjemnymi) w subiektywnym doświadczeniu jednostki. Zaprezentowane są teoretyczne i empiryczne fundamenty modelu oraz jego najważniejsze teoretyczne założenia.

In this paper we reflect on some analysis conducted by researchers as Laura Balbo, Mary Catherine Bateson and Martha Nussbaum who, although having not had direct relations among them or specific partnerships, have greatly contributed to elaborate concepts and categories regarding our new vision of the well-being. This concept, so dear to the economist Amartya Sen, draws nourishment from thoughts and lived belonging to women’s life experience, particularly as concerning their capacity to organize their daily and family life, taking care of others, shouldering the vulnerabilities and building their biographical paths with creativity and adaptation. So we can understand what is a good life through the realization of our abilities, that is of each person, and not using a utility calculation. This involves a new approach to life quality and human development, that is exactly the capabilities approach described by Sen, rehashed by Nussbaum but, for some aspects, it was already present into the studies which characterize the gender prospective.

Curiosity is a personality trait that is inversely related to depression and positively related to subjective wellbeing. However, the relationship between curiosity and these two outcomes is still unclear which hampers our general understanding of well-being. Based on research within positive psychology that showed character strengths such as curiosity can indirectly decrease depression, we hypothesized that the inverse relationship between curiosity and depression would be mediated by subjective well-being. Two hundred and fifty seven participants, between 18 and 64 years old (M = 24.50, SD = 8.33) completed a web-based survey comprising: The Curiosity and Exploration Inventory - II, Center for Epidemiological Studies - Depression and the Steen Happiness Index. We found that well-being mediated the relationship between curiosity and depression. The results indicate that curious individuals tend to report higher levels of subjective well-being which, in turn, is associated with lower levels of depression. Our findings contribute to the understanding of positive results obtained from clinical samples that underwent positive psychotherapy of depression.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the link between perfectionism treated as a personality’s trait, academic stress and college students’ psychological well-being. It was expected that the greater intensity of perfectionism achieved, the lower level of psychological well-being and the higher level of stress experienced. It was also assumed that the level of experienced stress would be a mediator of the relationship between perfectionism and psychological well-being. Alternative model with the well-being as a mediator of the relation between perfectionism and stress was also verified. Results of the study conducted on a sample of 298 students supported our assumptions. Higher level of perfectionism was associated with both higher stress level and lower sense of psychological well-being. Paths analyses provided evidence that relationship between perfectionism and psychological well-being can be explained by the high level of experienced stress (partial mediation). The analyses of well-being as a mediator in the relation between perfectionism and stress proved to be statistically significant and well suited to the sample (complete mediation). Results of this study are interpreted according to the Hobfoll’s Conservation of Resources Theory and Multiaxial Model of Coping (1998, 2006).

Subjective well-being encompasses several distinct but interacting aspects of people’s feelings, attitudes, and experiences. This paper assesses the state of the art for measuring these dimensions of people's lives, which typically involves analyzing self-reports of subjective well-being collected in survey instruments; however, other potentially complementary, technology-driven tools are emerging as well. We first answer the question, “what is subjective well-being?” and unpack its multidimensionality. The role of national statistics offices in measuring subjective well-being and deriving official statistics is considered next. We conclude by discussing how different characteristics of well-being constructs shape their applicability to policy. The overarching conclusion is that–while methodological limitations are present and a number of fundamental research challenges remain–understanding of how to collect and interpret data on subjective well-being has made enormous strides in the last two decades, and policies for a wide range of domains are beginning to be usefully informed.

A survey was carried out to explore the relationship between life aspirations, subjective well-being, and humility (i.e., accepting one’s own limitations, accepting oneself and reality, no desire for control, making use of one’s failures to improve oneself, and not putting on airs). The results indicated that humility may serve as a predictor of intrinsic aspirations and subjective well-being. Furthermore, it was established that intrinsic aspirations correlate positively with self-acceptance and acceptance of reality whereas extrinsic aspirations correlate negatively with a lack of desire for control. Two dimensions of humility: (a) recognizing one’s own limitations and (b) self-acceptance and acceptance of reality positively correlate with subjective well-being.

The intensity of stress in life is treated as the main factor differentiating mental wellbeing. The aim of the paper is to analyse opinions and behaviours concerning the choice of place and form of holiday trips in the context of stress reduction. The research was conducted in 2016 among 100 working adults. The method applied was the one of a diagnostic survey, with an authorial questionnaire. The results show that the desire of health improvement and a reduction of the negative influence of tension both have a significant influence on the choice of holiday destination. Over half of the respondents experience stress several times a week, or even every day. The main reason for nervous tension, pointed out by both men and women, is their work. The respondents confirmed experiencing numerous somatic symptoms of stress. The majority of the interlocutors perceive positive influence of a vacation on their mental condition. Expanding tourism offers towards improvement of the mental dimension of health may constitute an important element in promotion of pro-health lifestyle.

The purpose of this paper is to present selected aspects of the relationship between the father’s absence and children's well-being. The article discusses the consequences of the father’s absence in the family, including the impoverishment of the family, children's evaluation of their fathers, the health of mothers and newborn infants, lawbreaking by grown-up children, teenage pregnancy, violence towards children, alcohol abuse, drugs, and school problems. It was found that fathers play an important role in children's lives and their absence has a negative impact on their well-being.

Good mental health in childhood and adolescence is a prerequisite for optimal development, effective learning, build satisfying relationships with people, taking care of one’s own physical health, and self-management in adult life. Psychological well-being means life satisfaction and covers various aspects of life: school, family, friends, hobbies, etc. Thus, the status of well-being among students is vital for their psychological functioning. The aim of the present study was to identify selected aspects of the mental well-being of students at different stages of education. Study participants included fifty-nine students aged between 12 and 19 years (both males and females). The participants filled out a questionnaire concerning various aspects of life satisfaction and social functioning, designed specifically for the study. The results show that girls are more satisfied from their lives than boys, but they assess their own’s coping competencies lower than boys. Younger students show higher levels of general life satisfaction and better coping skills, although they more often have conflicting relationships with teachers. The results suggest that particular attention should be paid to older students, especially girls.

The current paper presents the results from some research on the relationship between In-ternet addiction, cyberchondria, and different aspects of well-being. The information available on the Internet, which is not necessarily truthful and accurate, can unreasonably amplify users health concerns. Problematic Internet use, health anxiety aroused by online searches for health information and escalation of health concerns as an indicator of cyberchondria, are all associated with a decrease in subjective and eudaimonic well-being as well as in self-esteem. The analyses indicate positive relationships between depressive symptoms on the one hand, and Internet ad-diction and health anxiety, on the other. A conclusion regarding the existence of a relationship between Internet addiction, cyberchondria and decreased levels of well-being could be drawn from the research. Furthermore, the results suggest that self-esteem and eudaimonic well-being correlate positively with the number of people with whom users communicate online.

Masculinity ideology is defined as a blend of cultural beliefs, types of behavior, and roles generally associated with men and boys. Previous studies have showed mixed effects of adherence to masculine ideology on men’s subjective well-being, indicating negative but also positive relationships. The present study focuses on agency, that is the core of stereotypic masculinity (Abele & Wojciszke, 2007), and its relationship to subjective well-being by analyzing data from a representative Polish sample of the European Social Survey (ESS). Participants were 1751 adults, aged 17 years and older (of whom 771 were men). A structural equation model was applied. The results demonstrated that agentic values (specifically valuing power and achievement) were good predictors of male and female subjective well-being. That is, the less men and women valued their own power and achievements, the lower their subjective well-being was. As expected, this association was stronger for men. Additionally, regardless of gender, we demonstrated that age was a negative predictor and that number of years of education a positive predictor of subjective well-being. This association was stronger for men.

The basic principle of attachment theory is the assumption that early childhood attachment relationships with significant others (primary attachment figure) are the pattern for the later romantic relationships in adulthood (with a romantic partner). Four questionnaire methods were applied to diagnose the quality of relationships in adult life: Plopa’s Attachment Styles Questionnaire (KSM); Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) in Juczyński adaptation, de Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (DJGLS) and Pospiszyl’s Marital Happiness Questionnaire (KSM). 250 married couples with different marital experience were subjected. The study proved the existence of statistical relationships between the secure attachment styles, well-being, loneliness and the marital satisfaction. The research confirmed the mediating impact of loneliness and psychological well-being on the marital satisfaction of adults with different attachment styles. As it turned out, the marital satisfaction can be seriously lessened by loneliness in safely attached adults and well-being can enhance this satisfaction in insecurely attached adults.

The paper aims at examining the predictive role of hope in hedonistic and eudaimonistic dimensions of subjective well-being. Five questionnaires were applied: Scale of Hope, BHI-12 Questionnaire, Satisfaction with Life Scale, PANAS-X Scale, Psychological Well-Being Scale. 206 people were subjected to the above methods. The obtained results suggest that hope understood in terms of success and as basic hope is interconnected both with hedonistic and eudaimonistic well-being. Hope for success appears to be a better predictor for a majority of dimensions of well-being, apart from the affective dimension of subjective well-being in which basic hope has a stronger predictive value. The existing connections between hope and hedonistic and eudaimonistic well-being can result from the concept of goals which is deeply embedded in both constructs and has significant motivational roles.

Wprowadzenie: Trudny czas epidemii to okres osobistych zmagań z własnymi lękami, słabością, chorobą. Na samopoczucie oddziałuje także sfera, którą można nazwać  duchowością – rozumianą jako religijność lub poszukiwanie sensu życia, niekoniecznie w aspekcie transcendentalnym. Cel badań: Próba określenia, czy w czasie wyrzeczeń, który opisuje Delsol, można znaleźć potwierdzenie dla znaczenia wiary dla samopoczucia duchowego. Metoda badań: Grupa badanych (58 studentek studiów niestacjonarnych) wypowiedziała się drogą on-line na temat samopoczucia fizycznego, psychicznego, społecznego i duchowego. Przeanalizowano wypowiedzi odnoszące się do samopoczucia duchowego, wykorzystując narzędzia CLARIN: Summarize, ReSpa, oraz określono nacechowanie emocjonalne przygotowanego korpusu w odwołaniu do teorii Plutchika. Podano przykłady wypowiedzi badanych. Wyniki: Badane, opisując swoje samopoczucie w wymiarze duchowości, częściej uruchomiały emocje pozytywne niż negatywne. W wypowiedziach wskazywano na poszukiwanie wsparcia duchowego, mówiono o szczęściu. Wypowiedzi na temat samopoczucia duchowego koncentrowały się na dwóch kategoriach – religijności i sensie życia, niekoniecznie w przywołaniu obecności Boga. Wnioski: Potwierdzono, że wiara ma znaczenie dla samopoczucia duchowego „czasu wyrzeczenia”. Sama modlitwa pełni funkcję terapeutyczną. Należy zaznaczyć, że nowa duchowość jest mocno związana ze światem kreowanym przez media, dlatego sensacyjny, nie zawsze potwierdzony komunikat dotyczący epidemicznych problemów zdrowotnych przyczyniał się do złego samopoczucia i stanów depresyjnych.
Introduction: The epidemic is a difficult time of personal struggles with fears, weaknesses and illness. One of the factors that influences people’s overall well-being is what can be called spirituality – understood as an individual’s religiosity or search for meaning of life, not necessarily in the transcendental sense. Research Aim: To try to determine whether it is possible to find a confirmation for the significance of faith for spiritual well-being in time of self-denial as described by Delsol. Method: A group of respondents (58 part-time female students) gave their online assessments of their physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being. Their responses regarding spiritual well-being were analysed using the CLARIN: Summarize (ReSpa) tools. The obtained corpus was described in terms of emotionality, drawing on Plutschik’s theory. A number of responses by the surveyed students were provided as examples. Results: When describing their spiritual well-being, the surveyed students were more likely to express positive than negative emotions. In their responses, they mentioned searching for spiritual support and talked about happiness. Their responses on spiritual well-being focused on two categories – religiousness and the meaning of life – not necessarily invoking the presence of God. Conclusions: The study proved that faith is a factor in spiritual well-being in “time of self-denial”. Praying can fulfil a therapeutic function in and of itself. It should be stressed that the newly found spirituality is closely linked to the world as shaped by the media, with the sensationalistic communications about the epidemic-related health issues, not always proven to be true, contributing to poor well-being and depression.

For many countries the Industrial Revolution was an opportunity for a dynamic economic development, but it was accompanied by deep social changes. Inequalities between regions have deepened, pollution has increased and also conjunctural fluctuations have intensified. In contemporary view at the social welfare there is a tendency to abandon identifying it with the level of income. Also, the research on the causes of socio-economic success is developing. One of the aspects of the research, which the article refers to, is the role of the institutions (within the meaning of institutional economics) in the socio-economic development. The aim of the paper is to examine the relationship between indicators of institutional environment and indices related to socio-economic development. For the analysis of the institutional environment the indices published by the World Bank under the name of Worldwide Governance Indicators were used. The analysis of socio-economic level of the countries is based on Sustainable Society Index and its components, which include a wide range of factors related to well-being. The analysis was conducted in two stages. The first stage is a general study of the correlation between WGI and SSI for 151 countries from different continents. The second stage includes a more detailed analysis conducted for the European Union, using the cluster method and the analysis of the level of indicators in groups of countries. The study is based on the data from 2010.

The caregiver role can be challenging as family members address the oft en complex needs of aging relatives. Resilience, the process or trait related to addressing and rebounding from adversity, may play a role in determining how well family caregivers fare. In this study, the authors explored the relationships between resilience and well-being in a uniquely resilient group – family caregivers to Holocaust survivors. Surveys were completed by a convenience sample of family caregivers (N = 89) living in the United States. One-way between subjects ANOVA with Scheff é post-hoc tests were run to compare low-, moderate-, and high-resilience caregivers. Depression was significantly lower for each progressively higher resilience group. Physical well-being was signifi cantly lower in the low-resilience group. Caregiver burden was not signifi cantly diff erent between groups. Resilience may have a prophylactic role in preserving physical and emotional well-being in family caregivers; however, resilience and burden may have a more nuanced relationship. Burden may have been underreported due to (a) comparisons with the stress experienced by the Holocaust survivors and/or (b) a heightened sense of filial piety. Health care practitioners should be aware of the complex role that resilience can potentially play both in protecting well-being and in masking burden in family caregivers.

The aim of the study was to examine the effects of emotional reactivity and support from different sources for the well-being of teenagers on different stages of development. Data on emotional reactivity, perceived social support from different sources and subjective well-being (SWB) was gathered from 180 younger and 135 older adolescents. Regression analyses included emotional reactivity and social support from different sources as predictors of SWB (positive affect, negative affect and life satisfaction). Analyses showed that emotional reactivity predicted all components of SWB. Support was a signifi cant predictor for positive affect and satisfaction, but its specifi c functions depended on age group and its analyzed source. Interaction effects of support with emotional reactivity were signifi cant only among older adolescents - positive affect depended on interaction between emotional reactivity and support from friends, life satisfaction depended on interplay between emotional reactivity and support from teachers.

Although it may be challenging to unambiguously recognize and define it, the notion of experiencing happiness, a constituent of psychological well-being, is undoubtedly one of the key traits featuring every person, whether intellectually fit or disabled. The feeling of happiness plays a significant role when coping with various types of situations including also the circumstances faced by an intellectually disabled person. Due to the diversity and multeity of the dimensions where it occurs, the experience of happiness can be subject of analyses from various stances, including the viewpoint of an intellectually disabled person. It seems that the disabled individual’s ability to deal with difficulties, which also influences efficiency of the rehabilitation process, is actually determined by the feelings of happiness, content and optimism, all of which remain in a relation with one’s personality, life situation,and conditions in which they live. The article draws attention to the subject of experiencing happiness by and psychological well-being of intellectually disabled people. It emphasizes the possibility of both theoretical and practical applications of assumptions of positive psychology as a requisite condition for the optimization of functioning of intellectually disabled people. Beyond any doubt, due care for the intellectually disabled people’s experience of happiness and psychological wellbeing is one of the most crucial requirements of their rehabilitation process as “positive states of mind (…) provide the power to struggle with adversities of life”

In a context of increasing pressure on performance, which affects almost all Algerian companies, question effectiveness of a policy of well-being at work depends on its impact on organizational performance: Numerous figures show costs of psychosocial risks, stress, absenteeism, etc. By virtue of the principle that a happy worker would also be a more productive worker, generating benefit for enterprise and a cost-reducing factor, even generating a better productive and commercial performance. Therefore, to reach these expectations, health culture and well-being at work must be part of basic values of actors of work world who are responsible for implementing an integrated preventive approach in all companies. As a result, an appeal is made to all managers and partners to make a joint commitment to effectively and efficiently reduce causes of work accidents and occupational diseases proliferation: company health, it’s health in the business. From now on, occupational health capital management and wellbeing of any company is one of its military priorities for its performance. It is part of company strategic objectives and must be taken into account in its daily operation.

Most stratification research concerns solely the economically active population and omits inactive seniors. Retirees are often treated as a separate and rather homogeneous social category. However, this approach is only partially valid. Retirees can still be differentiated in regard to their objective and subjective well-being, which is linked to their former occupations. Using large EU-SILC datasets for Central European countries, this article focuses on the effect of pre-retirement socio-occupational category on the well-being of retirees. The category is found to be an important explanatory variable after controlling for age, sex, marital status, and other characteristics. However, there are substantial differences among countries. While in Czechia, retirees are most homogeneous in regard to their objective and subjective well-being across socio-occupational categories, the differences are considerably larger in Hungary and Poland, and on a similar level as in our benchmark country, Austria.

As a part of the European Statistical System, a general concept of measuring the quality of life was presented, defining its dimensions and partial indicators. The methodological objective of the study is to operationalize the measurement of subjective well-being(SW-B). The proposed method of measuring SW-B is based on the above concept, while incorporating the Sen’s capabilities approach. The operationalization was performed using the MIMIC model. This model incorporates both observable functionings (SW-B indicators) and sociodemographic characteristics of individuals (conversion factors). The two sets of variables are linked through the latent capabilities, which are interpreted as the SW-B measures. Empirical analysis of the SW-B in Poland in 2015 was conducted using EU-SILC data. Characteristics influencing the SW-B were identified. The SW-B depends mostly on self-perceived health and material deprivation. Moreover, higher values of SW-B were observed for those who work, have 1–2 children and are highly educated.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived stress and psychological well-being among parents of children with down syndrome. The relationship between perceiving one’s parenthood and well-being was also studied. The sample consisted of 126 parents (75 mothers and 51 fathers, aged 25-69) of children with down syndrome. our results show that ego-resiliency is a partial mediator of the relationship between perceived stress and psychological well-being. Moreover, there is a difference in well-being between parents who perceive their parenthood as a burden or challenge, and parents who report happiness and satisfaction.

The aim of the research was to answer the question whether the remote work imposed on workers during the COVID-19 epidemic has an impact on their well-being, and if so, how. The research material consisted of the results of a survey conducted among the employees referred to remote work in connection with the announced state of the epidemic in Poland. The research was conducted in the period from July 31 to August 19, 2020. The research was conducted using a questionnaire method, the study was attended by 199 respondents. A survey questionnaire was used in the study and the results obtained were statistically processed. The research carried out allowed us to obtain the results of the self-assessment of employees referred to work in the homme-office in terms of their mental well-being and physical well-being.

The article presents the relationship between the grit factor and the mental well-being of young people recruited from high school students in Podlaskie Voivodeship (n = 275). The study was conducted using the Short Grit Scale (SGS) by A.L. Duckworth, the Psychological Well-Being Scales (PWBS) by C. Ryff and the Cantril’s Ladder of Life Scale. The obtained results indicate significant positive relationships of grit with the current assessment of the quality of life and mental well-being in each of the six dimensions measured with C. Ryff’s PWBS tool (autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance). Since grit is a construct showing positive relationships with well-being and quality of life and a modifiable one – it can be shaped at an early stage of development – it should be considered as an important element when drawing future educational plans.

Communities affected by tidal flooding, need psychological treatment to overcome various problems that arise. The purpose of this study was to analyze: 1) strategic coping of communities affected by tidal flooding, 2) psychological well-being of communities affected by tidal flooding, 3) differences in strategic coping of communities affected by tidal flooding in the three regions, 4) differences in psychological well-being of communities affected by tidal flooding in the three areas, 5) the correlation between strategies coping with psychological well-being in communities affected by tidal flooding. Samples were recruited by purposive sampling of 84 respondents. Data analysis uses Spearman rank correlation and Kruskal Wallis. The results obtained by the average strategic coping of 96.73 with a range of values (79-112). Psychological well-being has an average value 197.39 with a range of values (159-228). Spearman rank results proved to be a relationship between coping strategies with psychological well-being (ρ value: 0,000; r of 0.620) with the strength of a positive relationship (0.620). Kruskal Wallis test results show differences in respondent coping strategies among the three regions taken as research samples with ρ value: 0.018 <0.05. Kruskal Wallis test results showed no differences in psychological well-being of respondents among the three regions taken as research samples with ρ value: 0.340> 0.05.

In this study the significance of attributes in child well-being is presented. The main goal was to find features most specific for child-well being evaluation in Poland. The dataset was obtained from a survey based on a special questionnaire. To select important attributes three filter for individual attribute rank were used ?2, information gain and relief attribute evaluator and one filter-subset selector based on rough set theory. In the article the dataset is described in details. All the attributes are named, divided by category and for each a domain is given. Then methods of attribute selection applied in experiments are presented. Finally results on selecting attributes relevant for child well-being are discussed.

The paper is aimed at identifying the influence of socio-psychological factors on the formation of subjective well-being of the person. The following methods were used: questionnaire, psycho-diagnostic techniques for investigating satisfaction with marriage, personal self-fulfillment in the family (on the operational level and the level of values and role sets), socio-psychological adaptation, conformity of family values and role expectations. The data about the content, structural components (cognitive, value and motivational, emotional and behavioral) and functions (regulatory, prognostic, developmental) of subjective well-being of person have been presented. Socio-psychological factors of subjective well-being of the person have been specified.
Przedmiotem analiz w artykule jest problem subiektywnego samopoczucia jednostki w zakresie zmian transformacyjnych we wszystkich dziedzinach współczesnego życia. Badanie ma na celu analizę wpływu czynników społecznych i psychologicznych na powstawanie subiektywnego samopoczucia jednostki w małżeństwie. Głównym zadaniem badań naukowych jest określenie elementów konstrukcyjnych subiektywnego samopoczucia danej osoby w małżeństwie, jego funkcje i poziomy ekspresji. Badanie zostało oparte na kwestionariuszach, psychodiagnostycznych metodach badania satysfakcji małżeńskiej, osobistego spełnienia w rodzinie (na poziomie operacyjnym i na poziomie wartości, postaw i roli), adaptacji społecznej i psychologicznej, wartości rodzinnych, spójności i oczekiwań względem ról w małżeństwie. Wykazano, że dobrostan subiektywny jednostki w małżeństwie – wielofunkcyjnej integralnej formacji społecznej i psychologicznej, w swojej strukturze obejmuje ocenę poznawczą, motywacji, wartości emocjonalne i elementy behawioralne. Ustalono, że głównymi funkcjami dobrostanu subiektywnego są funkcje regulacyjne, prognostyczne i rozwojowe. Wyróżniono czynniki społeczno-psychologiczne dobrostanu subiektywnego indywidualnej osoby: społeczną i psychologiczną adaptację i tolerancję; wartość orientacji jednostki i dobrobyt partnera w małżeństwie; zadowolenie z małżeństwa; stopień spójności znaczenia wartości rodzinnych w emocjonalnych, intymnych i seksualnych, domowych, rodzicielskich i edukacyjnych polach, pola tożsamości osobistej i społecznej aktywności; możliwość samodoskonalenia i dokonań osobistych, w połączeniu z dominacją wartości rodzinnych; pewność i rolę spójności oczekiwań i wyobrażeń, rolę molestowania; rolę zbieżności zachowań; niski poziom konfliktu w interakcji małżonków (wsparcie i komfort emocjonalny, kultura, komunikacja). Jako główny cel dalszych badań określono właściwości doświadczenia dobrostanu subiektywnego w małżeństwie na różnych etapach cyklu życia rodziny.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced higher education students to change their academic functioning, as well as the process of their social integration. This study focuses on the impact of the pandemic on student well-being, engagement and commitment to the university. The research group comprises 184 students from two universities (Poland and Germany). The research has shown that engagement with the university and the sense of commitment are negatively related to students’ well-being before the pandemic. It has also been revealed that females show higher commitment and engagement regardless of the country. Findings contribute to understanding student engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In according with Job Demands-Resources model high job resources create appropriate job attitudes directly and indirectly through increase of work engagement. The direct and indirect effects of job resources were tested in relation to organizational commitment and citizenship behavior mainly. The study was aimed at investigation the links between job resources and job related subjective wellbeing, measured by job satisfaction and positive affect at work, and also mediating role of the work engagement relating to the above mentioned link. Participants were 316 teachers. As predicted by the Job DemandsResources model, the research results show direct and indirect (via work engagement) effects of job resources on jobrelated wellbeing. High job resources (supervisor support, coworkers support and psychological climate at work) correlated with high job satisfaction and high positive affect at work. Work engagement mediated this links. The results indicate the need to develop Job DemandsResources model.

The coronavirus pandemic has turned out to be the biggest challenge the modern educational systems across the world have ever faced. Many teachers observed as their well-being plummeted as they started to overwhelmingly worry about the health of their families, as they were facing confusing instructions, unclear expectations or technical difficulties. The purpose of this qualitative study is to diagnose the role of educational coaching in stimulating the well-being of teachers during the pandemic of COVID-19. The results indicate that educational coaching can help teachers improve their well-being during the pandemic when teachers need to change their role - from classroom to remote - and succeed under a new set of circumstances.

This research was aimed at determining students’ educational well-being, mainly taking into account social pedagogy among secondary schoolchildren in Sri Lanka. The study used a survey research design and a questionnaire instrument for data collection. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 1350 secondary school students. To analyse the data, the research used descriptive analyses such as mean, standard deviation and multiple regression analysis. The results demonstrate that the social pedagogy and the students’ educational well-being were at moderate levels. Multiple regression analysis, using the stepwise method, showed that the social pedagogy correlated significantly with the students’ educational well-being. However, the study found no significant relationship between the teachers’ academic support and the students’ well-being. The implications of the study indicate that teachers need to have a good relationship with students and implement student-centred teaching methods. Various activities and mechanisms need to be organized to enhance student’s educational well-being related to social pedagogy, incorporating teachers, parents and community members.

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between gratitude and certain components of well-being which are conducive to affirming life. Additionally, we also compared how experiencing joy impacts those components of well-being. A randomly chosen 1/3 of the participants was asked to recall an event from their past when they felt grateful. Another 1/3 was asked to recall an event from their past when they felt joy. The final 1/3 of the participants was the control group. Next, all participants filled in the Satisfaction With Life Scale. Then (taking turns) they completed the Social Ties Scale and the Social Trust Scale. Finally, all participants estimated the amount of beneficiary experiences and gratitude they had received in life. The results of the study indicate that both gratitude and joy enhance happiness, and that gratitude and joy play an important, although different in some respects, role as contributing factors to happiness. The results indicate a positive relationship between the balance in gratitude experiences and the examined aspects of well-being.

Two studies were performed to test the relationship between readiness for self-improvement (consisting of two components: readiness to improve oneself and readiness to take care of one’s health) and selected measures of well-being. The first study investigated whether readiness for self-improvement is related to the selected measures of overall subjective well-being (or life satisfaction). The second one investigated in what way readiness for self-improvement is related to subjective well-being at workplace (or work engagement). The results obtained in both cases showed that readiness for self-improvement is indeed related to and does account for well-being. In the first study, readiness for self-improvement (i.e. readiness to improve oneself) accounted for overall life satisfaction within important human life domains and satisfaction with the present and future life. In the second study, work engagement, was significantly linked to readiness to improve oneself but was not with readiness to take care of one’s health.

Sampling from three wealthy counties in Shandong province (n = 855), this research examined the characteristics of an output well-being index, and the index shows good internal consistency reliability and ideal construct validity. It could be used as an instrument to evaluate the quality of life of Chinese citizens. The index was applied to an analysis of the quality of life of the residents from three wealthy counties. It shows that the level of the quality of life of the rural residents is higher than that of the urban residents, but the level of some indicators is imbalanced, and the levels of subjective and objective indicators are consistent. These characteristics of the well-being index of the rural residents from the wealthy counties are closely related with the level of the local economy and social development. It is advised that the output well-being index could be used to evaluate the degree of citizen’s need that was met and the degree of human being’s all-over development that was realized. It could also be used as an important policy instrument for the policy makers’ good governance.

The evaluation of subjective well-being, and of similar issues related to quality of life, is usually addressed through composite indicators or counting procedures. This leads to inconsistencies and inefficiency in the treatment of ordinal data that, in turn, affect the quality of information provided to scholars and to policy-makers. In this paper we take a different path and prove that the evaluation of multidimensional ordinal well-being can be addressed in an effective and consistent way, using the theory of partially ordered sets. We first show that the proper evaluation space of well-being is the partially ordered set of achievement profiles and that its structure depends upon the importance assigned to well-being attributes. We then describe how evaluation can be performed extracting information out of the evaluation space, respecting the ordinal nature of data and producing synthetic indicators without attribute aggregation. An application to subjective well-being in Italy illustrates the procedure.

A growing body of research suggests that some time perspective orientations are more beneficial than others with regard to well-being. However, little is known about the factors affecting the development of these time perspectives. This gap in the research was addressed through two studies. Study 1 (N = 218; M = 29.8 years, SD = 11.45) identified ZTPI past positive (PP) as a beneficial time perspective and past negative (PN) as a detrimental time perspective. Structural equation modelling was then used in Study 2 (N = 443; M = 31.2 years, SD = 13.0) to develop two models of the associations between attachment orientation, basic psychological need satisfaction and PP and PN, respectively. While anxious and avoidant attachment orientation were associated with both PP and PN, the three basic psychological needs were differentially associated. The findings of these studies suggest the importance of early childhood care to the development of beneficial time perspectives.

Striving for a success in parallel to the simultaneous attainment of high level of well-being is these days a common phenomenon. For quite a long time it has been also in the focus of the scientific debates and papers also dealing with education. This paper presents the findings of the study on the teachers’ perception of the student success in the context of assessment of selected success determinants and/or indicators. While analysing the theoretical relationship between student's well-being and educational success, 4 selected factors taken from the Buchner (2004) study were considered key to the undertaken research. The results showed that teachers tend to recognize factors related to the student's well-being as indicators of success, which means they perceive it as a result of achievement. Meanwhile the care for the student’s well-being before undertaking an educational task as a success determinant-related situation seems to be less visible.

The effect of retirement on perceived well-being is examined by using three waves of the Hungarian GGS data. The marginal log-linear model, which is a useful, state-of-the art methodological tool for categorical multivariate analysis, is applied to the problem. This paper ascertains that retirement has a significantly negative effect on an individual’s perceived well-being, although after three years of retirement the feeling of well-being starts to increase again. The significant decrease after retirement can be explained by the health and age of the individual, since those in living poor health and retiring at a younger age tend to have lower subjective well-being. Thus retirement and subjective well-being are conditionally independent given health and age. This paper also reveals that the perceived well-being of those who have retired between the first and the second wave is a Markov chain. This means that the perceived well-being measured in the third and the first waves are conditionally independent given the well-being measured in the second wave. The results support the idea that retirement causes a temporary reduction in well-being.

Cel – W pracy za cel przyjęto ocenę zasadności uwzględniania czasu wolnego w miernikach dobrobytu oraz określenie siły jego wpływu na subiektywne poczucie dobrobytu w grupie 113 krajów. Metoda badań – Przeprowadzona została krytyczna analiza literatury przedmiotu oraz wnioskowanie dedukcyjne. Spośród metod ilościowych zastosowano narzędzia statystyki opisowej i modele ekonometryczne, których celem było skonstruowanie dwóch autorskich mierników i porównanie ich z istniejącymi wskaźnikami dobrobytu. Autorskie mierniki zostały oparte na różnych założeniach, aby potwierdzić wyprowadzone wnioski teoretyczne. Wnioski – Na podstawie literatury przedmiotu stwierdzono, że odpowiednia ilość czasu wolnego jest warunkiem koniecznym zaistnienia istotnych elementów dobrobytu. Badania ilościowe wykazały, że zarówno popularne mierniki dobrobytu, które nie uwzględniają czasu wolnego, jak i te mniej znane, które go uwzględniają, są słabo skorelowane ze wskaźnikiem subiektywnego poczucia dobrobytu – World Happiness Index. Zagregowanie ilości czasu wolnego z PKB per capita PPP, najpopularniejszym miernikiem dobrobytu, zwiększyło jego korelację z tym samym subiektywnym wskaźnikiem, co jest zgodne z wnioskami teoretycznymi. Oryginalność/wartość – Skonstruowano autorskie mierniki dobrobytu w oparciu o mikroekonomiczne modele dotyczące użyteczności. Ponadto zbadano, w jakim stopniu one, oraz inne uznane już mierniki dobrobytu, odzwierciedlają rozkład subiektywnego poziomu dobrobytu na świecie.
Purpose – The goal of this study is to assess leisure relevance for the well-being indexes and to examine the importance of leisure for subjective well-being. Research method – A critical analysis of literature and deductive reasoning were conducted. From among the quantitative methods, tools of descriptive statistics and econometric models were used, the aim of which was to construct two original indexes and compare them with existing indicators of wellbeing. Results – On the basis of the literature, it was concluded that an adequate amount of leisure is a prerequisite for the existence of many well-being elements. Quantitative research has shown that well-being indexes are poorly correlated with the indicator of subjective well-being – World Happiness Index. Aggregating the amount of leisure with GDP per capita PPP, the most popular measure of wellbeing, increased its correlation with the same subjective indicator. These results are in line with theoretical conclusions. Originality /value – Two original well-being indexes were constructed based on microeconomic utility models and their adjustment to the subjective well-being was examined.

In this article we analyse how participation in a healthy life style training program affected self-esteem and positive thinking of pupils from 4 post-primary schools of Mazovia Province. Teenagers participating in “Winners’ Training” were involved in action and encouraged to take responsibility for their own development in an area of physical fitness and psychological well- being. 21 days long training, covering healthy nutrition training, intensive physical exercise training, and positive thinking training, resulted – apart from noted increase of physical parameters – in improvement of reported by participants psychological well-being, and increase of the level of their self-esteem and of the level of positive thinking The factor, which most clearly affected the variation of obtained results, was the level of commitment to the entire program on the part of school top management, which resulted in greater commitment of involved teachers, and finally in greater commitment of pupils, who put more attention and effort in the training. Teenagers voluntarily participating in the program in “more committed” schools received not only coaching, but also a lot of positive information about the program and the issues it covered, and more appreciation of their participation in it. As it seems, the increase of the measured psychological parameters resulted to greater degree from the level of individual commitment than from the measured increase of physical fitness.

Introduction and aim. The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected both the physical and mental health of societies. The present study was conducted to determine the relationship between psychological well-being with levels of anxiety, COVID-19 fear, and depression in individuals hospitalized with COVID-19. Material and methods. This descriptive correlative study was conducted with 685 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 treated in the clinics of a pandemic hospital. The data of the study were collected with the information form, psychological well-being scale (PWBS), COVID-19 fear scale (FCV-19S), and hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS). Results. The mean PWBS score of the participants was 37.21±14.3, the FCV-19S score was 20.10±10.41, the HADS-anxiety score was 9.07±7.29, and the depression score was 10.74±7.35. The PWBS scores with FCV-19S scores of the participants, HADS-anxiety, and HADS-depression scores were found to be negatively correlated (p<0.001). Conclusion. In conclusion, as the anxiety, fear, and depression levels experienced by individuals receiving inpatient treatment in a pandemic hospital due to COVID-19 increase, their psychological well-being levels decrease at a statistically significant level. It may be recommended to intervene in the anxiety, fear, and depressive symptoms of individuals receiving inpatient treatment due to a diagnosis of COVID-19 to increase their psychological well-being.

The main aim of the article is to outline welfare sociology as a potential sub-discipline of sociology and to discuss the issues of broadly defined social welfare. While in contemporary social sciences the literature concerning welfare often focuses on themes such as happiness (psychology), prosperity (economics), or quality of life (sociology), these themes may be considered too narrow and do not reflect the complexity of the issue. However, if one considers the definition of social welfare through the prism of material and non-material needs, as well as the needs expressed individually and collectively, it is possible to attempt a comprehensive study of this phenomenon. The author uses the definition of social welfare to look at research on (a) welfare state regimes, (b) welfare attitudes and (c) issues of work in contemporary capitalism, all to enable the application of research results within the analysis of the title concept.

This study examined Taiwanese undergraduates’ trajectories of emotional well-being, positive affect, and negative affect over a 16-week period within one semester. The effect of their differences in gender and time perspective profiles on intraindividual variability of weekly affect and associations between time trends of affects and use of two emotional regulation strategies, i.e., reappraisal and suppression, were also investigated. Longitudinal data from 96 undergraduates were analyzed by hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). With time passing, the habitual use of reappraisal was related to the increase of emotional well-being and positive affect and related to the decline of negative affect. By contrast, habitually using suppression was related to an increase of negative affect over time. The main findings also indicated that individuals with balanced time perspective had higher levels of emotional well-being compared to those without balanced time perspective at the baseline of the study. Gender and time perspective profiles were also demonstrated as moderators in the relationship between changes in using emotional regulation strategies on emotional well-being.

W opracowaniu analizom poddaje się strukturę wydatków konsumpcyjnych polskich gospo-darstw domowych funkcjonujących w odmiennych układach przestrzennych. Dokonuje się oceny różnic strukturalnych pomiędzy województwami w kontekście spójności terytorialnej zachowań konsumpcyjnych w latach stopniowego ujawniania się skutków globalnego kryzysu. Przeprowa-dzone badania pozwalają zweryfikować tezę o dominacji tendencji dywergencyjnych w okresie 2008–2011. Wśród głównych uwarunkowań występujących dysparytetów wskazuje się na aspekty dochodowo-zatrudnieniowe. Stąd też podkreśla się ujawnianie się współzależności w układzie: nierówności na rynku pracy – nierówności dochodowe – nierówności konsumpcyjne. Zjawiska narastających dysparytetów stanowią ponadto podstawę wniosków o niepowodzeniu dotychcza-sowej polityki spójności i polaryzacyjnym charakterze procesów rozwojowych.
The analysis of structure of consumption expenditures of Polish households functioning within different spatial areas was conducted in the study. There were estimated structural differences between voivodeships in the context of territorial cohesion of consumption behaviour in a period of gradual disclosure of effects of the global crisis. The research allowed to conclude about divergence processes in a period 2008–2011. Income and employment are pointed out among main determinants of the growing disparities. There are stressed relationships between: inequalities on a labour market – income inequalities – consumption inequalities. The growing disparities are also a base to conclude about unsuccessfull cohesion policy and polarized character of the growth processes.

Every human being has some experience of giving and receiving. Although this is a universal reality which exceeds culture, religion and ethnicity, it is only recently that research has begun to focus on the subject of gratitude. This article seeks to analyze gratitude from the perspective of modern psychological research. Specifically, it examines obstacles to the expression of gratitude and suggests strategies to enhance it. The research literature clearly supports the important role that gratitude plays in many areas of life, especially with regard to well-being, health, coping with stress, and cultivating pro-social relationships. It is very important to know what contributes to disturbances in experiencing and expressing gratitude, as well as factors that enhance it.

The main aim of the paper was to analyse the subjective well-being of the elderly in Poland, as well as its determinants by use of the logistic regression. The data used come from the 2011 wave of the survey “Social Diagnosis – living conditions and quality of life of Poles”. The analyses have shown that men aged 60 years or more had higher subjective well-being than their female counterparts. Subjective life satisfaction of the elderly in Poland decreases with age for women, but for males on the opposite. The elderly in Poland were satisfied the most with the aspects related to their personal life such as children, marriage, relationship with family member and relatives, while they were the least satisfied with situation in the country, life prospects, health status, sexual life, and economical situation of their families. Educational level and health status (measured in terms of disability) had the greatest impact on the sense of happiness. Generally people with the highest level of education had more chances to be happy than those less educated. The probability of happiness among people without disability was higher than among disabled ones. Married people also had bigger odds to be happy.

The main aim of this study was to develop a short questionnaire to assess work-related well-being from the organizational behaviour perspective. The short well-being questionnaire enables measuring longitudinal work-related well-being. Work-related well-being was assessed with a 147-item questionnaire covering both organizational and intrinsic factors of work-related well-being. The questionnaire consisted of 27 categories. The respondents were 114 women (65%) and 62 men (35%), mean age 39.2 years, in various occupations. From the extensive questionnaire a shorter questionnaire with 33 items was developed by principal component analysis. The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin measure to test the sampling adequacy of 27 factor solutions varied from .62 to .91 and Cronbachʼs α was .74–.94. Most κ values of the shorter questionnaire were .50–.94 (p < .001). The reliability of the short version was comparable to that of the original questionnaire. The short one could also be suitable for Internet and mobile questionnaire applications.

Objectives Good communication between seafarers and their families at home is essential to compensate for the work-related strain experienced on board ships. This paper presents the needs and possibilities for communication with home in seafaring. Material and Methods In total, 323 seafarers were interviewed during their work assignments on board (the participation rate of 88.5%). The results were stratified by cultural background, family ties, rank groups and shipping routes. Results The average stay of the officers on board the current vessels lasted 4 months and that of the ratings 9 months (p < 0.001). About a third of the officers and a half of the ratings evaluated these lengths of stay as too long. In the study, only 50 participants (15.5%) mentioned that the Internet on board their previous vessel was available for private use. Only 40.6% of these crew members stated that they had used it on a daily basis. Particularly the seafarers assigned to worldwide destinations and crew members without children experienced the insufficient possibilities for telecommunication as work-related strain (OR 1.87, 95% CI: 1.15–3.04 respective OR 2.00, 95% CI: 1.03–3.88). The average amount of time spent on telecommunication amounted to more than 2.5 h/week (which equals approximately 20 min/day). The average cost of about USD 30/week for telecommunication was considered by 24.7% of the seafarers as “much too high.” Conclusions The fact that several crew members considered the time spans of their assignments as too long should lead to certain adjustments. In view of the importance of good options for shipboard telecommunication, this study makes an essential contribution to understanding the crews’ needs. Measures should be taken to improve communication by allowing an easier access to information and communication technology (ICT) (on board and ashore), by offering cheaper fees, and by providing Internet access in their cabins. W niniejszym artykule została podjęta próba wskazania, które aspekty z zakresu dobrostanu psychicznego pracowników zostały już odkryte i opisane za pomocą metody naukowej, a które pozostają w obszarze niewiedzy. W artykule zostały przybliżone definicje wellbeingu, oparte o różne systemy myślenia, a także przytoczono przykładowe wyjaśnienia pojęcia wellbeingu pracowników. W badaniach nad wellbeingiem mamy do czynienia z trzema orientacjami, tj. szkołą hedonistyczną (subiektywną), szkołą eudajmonistyczną (obiektywną), a także szkołą integrującą oba podejścia. Autor przybliżył kilka wyników badań dotyczących korelacji między dobrostanem pracowników a innymi zmiennymi w organizacji (między innymi wpływem środowiska pracy, praktykami zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi, używaniem korporacyjnych mediów społecznościowych czy wpływem specyficznej kultury organizacyjnej firmy). W artykule nie zabrakło również odniesień do danych statystycznych i przykładów rozumienia wellbeingu w praktyce zarządczej. Za szczególnie ważne aspekty wywodu autor uznaje skonstruowanie pytań związanych z wellbeingiem pracowników w kontekście praktyki zarządczej oraz przygotowanie praktycznych rekomendacji. W oparciu o kwestie omówione w artykule wskazano także możliwe kierunki rozwoju dalszych badań.
This paper attempts to indicate which aspects of mental well-being of employees have already been discovered and described using the scientific method, and which remain unknown. The article provides the definitions of mental well-being, based on various thinking systems, as well as cases explaining the concept of employee well-being. In research on well-being, we deal with three research orientations, i.e., the hedonistic approach (subjective) and the eudaimonistic approach (objective), as well as the school integrating both approaches. Several results of research on the correlation between the well-being of employees and other variables in the organization were also presented: the influence of the work environment, human resource management practices, the use of corporate social media, and the influence of the company's specific organizational culture. The article also includes statistical data and examples of understanding well-being in management practice. A particularly important aspect raised in the article was the construction of questions related to the well-being of employees, precisely in the context of management practice, and the preparation of practical recommendations. Possible directions for further research were also indicated, especially on the basis of the aspects cited in the article.

Analizy subiektywnego dobrostanu (SWB) stały się integralnym elementem badań społecznych realizowanych przez instytucje akademickie, komercyjne, publiczne czy międzynarodowe. Oceny formułowane przez respondentów traktowane są jako wskaźnik oceny sytuacji indywidualnej w kontekście społecznym. Wewnątrzkrajowe zróżnicowanie subiektywnego dobrostanu może być zatem traktowane jako wymiar nierówności społecznych. Badania porównawcze, w znacznym stopniu koncentrujące się na krajach zachodnich, pokazują stabilny, wysoki poziom SWB i zmniejszające się zróżnicowanie SWB, a także ujemną zależność między zróżnicowaniem SWB wewnątrz populacji a średnim poziomem SWB. W celu rozszerzenia obecnego stanu wiedzy w artykule przeprowadzono analizy dystrybucji subiektywnego dobrostanu w krajach postsocjalistycznych i odniesiono je do krajów Europy Zachodniej. Na podstawie danych pochodzących z Europejskiego Sondażu Społecznego dla lat 2002–2016 prześledziłyśmy trendy w zakresie poziomu i zróżnicowania SWB, a także kształt jego dystrybucji. Dokonałyśmy porównań krajów posttransformacyjnych, a także krajów Europy Środkowo- -Wschodniej i Zachodniej. Wyniki wskazują na wyższe niż w grupie krajów zachodnich, ale zmniejszające się w analizowanym okresie, nierówności SWB w krajach posttransformacyjnych przy jednoczesnym wzroście średniego poziomu dobrostanu. Analizy potwierdzają negatywną zależność pomiędzy średnim poziomem SWB oraz poziomem PKB per capita a dyspersją SWB, natomiast otrzymane wyniki dotyczące relacji pomiędzy nierównościami dochodowymi a dyspersją nie są jednoznaczne.
Within social sciences, there has been recently a growing interest in subjective well-being (SWB) measures. Assessments formulated by respondents in this respect are an indicator of their subjective view on their individual position within a larger social context. Variation in reported SWB levels within a country can be therefore regarded as a dimension of social inequality. Comparative research, which concentrates predominantly on western democracies shows stable and high average levels of SWB and a falling SWB variation, as well as a negative correlation between these elements. The article extends the existing state of knowledge to CEE countries. Using data from the European Social Survey for 2002–2016, the article traces trends in the average level and the dispersion in SWB in these countries and compares them to western European societies. Variation in SWB is higher among CEE countries, but falling, as the average SWB grows. Furthermore, the analyses confirm the negative impact of the level of economic development and the average SWB level on its dispersion also for CEE countries. However, we have not found evidence of a positive correlation between economic inequality and SWB variation for this group.

Using the micro data of Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) in 2017, this paper analyzes the logical relationship between intergenerational care, intergenerational support and subjective well-being of the elderly. The study found that intergenerational care can significantly enhance the subjective well-being of the elderly, and there are age and income heterogeneity. Further analysis found that there is a partial mediating effect of intergenerational support in the effect of intergenerational care on the subjective well-being of the elderly. Based on this, it is necessary to build an elderly care service system that is coordinated by home-based community institutions and combined with medical care and health care, vigorously develop an inclusive nursery service system, establish and improve the nursery policy and mechanism, and promote the professional and standardized development of infant care services.

Psychology well-describes the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of human well-being. Within the construct of well-being, psychologists distinguish eudemonic positive affect and hedonic positive affect, although they are not only nor mutually exclusive approaches. Empirical findings have documented a correlation between the general positive affect and favourable health outcomes. Recent discoveries also show a biological pattern, which underlines the correlation. Thanks to describing conserved transcriptional response to adversity (CTRA) mechanism, a new direction of research which explores a relationship between profile of gene expression in immune cells and positive affect, is emerging.

The quantum revolution undermined the solid nature of reality, opening the door to the primary role of mind, and proposing scenarios with unexpected features. In this paper interesting aspects of quantum physics are considered, with inevitable repercussions on our lives, which can decisively influence our actions and future. These findings underline the importance of building a cognitive resilience with mindfulness training, for improving the ability to regulate emotions, attention to the true surrounding reality, mood and well-being in life.

The aim of the study presented was to verify empirically a conception of workaholism as a multidimensional syndrome. The study also investigated the notion of ‘functional’ and ‘dysfunctional’ types of workaholic, on the basis of the participants’ cognitive evaluations of their quality of life. The research group comprised Polish managers who had graduated with, or were studying to attain, a Master’s degree in Business Administration. The 137 participants completed a set of questionnaires that were based on five different research tools. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the theory that workaholism has a three-dimensional structure that includes behavioural, cognitive, and affective dimensions. Using cluster analysis, three types of worker were identified, two of which represented types of workaholic with different scores for the dimensions of workaholism and for aspects of quality of life. The research demonstrated that workaholism is a three-dimensional construct. It enabled the integration of different perspectives and also confirmed that dysfunctional and functional types of workaholic exist. Furthermore, this paper provides practical insights about workaholism for practitioners of human resources that can be used in the selection and evaluation of employees.

Maintaining high levels of well-being in the face of a chronic disease requires utilization of many psychosocial resources in the coping process. The efficacy of this process depends on using coping strategies that fit to the specificity of a particular chronic disease. The aim of this study was to show the relationships between well-being and coping strategies, and less studied constructs such as resiliency and personal empowerment among people with diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. The study comprised 100 participants (59 with type I diabetes and 41 with rheumatoid arthritis) who completed a set of questionnaires measuring wellbeing, strategies of coping with stress, resiliency and personal empowerment. As expected, there was a significant indirect effect of resiliency on well-being through mediators such as personal empowerment and disease-specific coping strategies. The results support the significant determinants of well-being among people with chronic diseases. They also indicated a more complex structure of the variables in which resiliency plays a major role for the well-being by the means of coping strategies and personal empowerment.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników badań na temat roli przyjaźni w doświadczaniu dobrostanu psychicznego przez adolescentów. Założono, że dzięki przyjacielowi łatwiej może przebiegać adaptacja adolescenta tak do wewnętrznych przemian, jak i do oczekiwań społecznych, co z kolei pozwoli mu na osiągnięcie poczucia spełnienia, samoakceptacji czy zadowolenia z życia. Postawiono więc pytanie, czy istnieje związek pomiędzy doświadczaniem przyjaźni a dobrostanem psychicznym adolescentów. Oczekiwano, że taki związek o charakterze dodatnim istnieje odnośnie do dobrostanu osobowościowego, społecznego oraz emocjonalnego. Zbadano 112 uczniów w wieku 15-18 lat, w tym 71 dziewcząt i 37 chłopców (4 osoby nie określiły swojej płci), za pomocą dwóch narzędzi: Kwestionariusza do Badania Relacji Społecznych i Kwestionariusza do Badania Dobrostanu Psychicznego Adolescentów. Ustalono, że istnieje dodatni związek pomiędzy doświadczaniem przyjaźni a dobrostanem osobowościowym i społecznym, co potwierdziło hipotezę, natomiast nie została potwierdzona hipoteza w odniesieniu do dobrostanu emocjonalnego, gdzie takiego związku nie ustalono.
This article presents the results of research on the role of friendship in the experience of well-being for adolescents. It was assumed that with a friend can easily run adaptation of adolescent to internal changes, and to social expectations, which in turn will allow them to achieve a sense of accomplishment, self-acceptance and satisfaction with life. We put the question of whether there is a link between the experience of friendship and mental well-being of adolescents. It was expected that such a positive relationship concerns the well-being of personality, social and emotional. Examined 112 students aged 15-18 years, including 71 girls and 37 boys (4 persons did not indicate their gender), using two tools: Questionnaire for the Study of Social Relations and Questionnaire for the Study Mental Well-being of adolescents. It turned out that there is a positive relationship between the experience of friendship and personality and social well-being, which confirmed the hypothesis but it has not been confirmed hypothesis in relation to the emotional well-being, where such a link has not been established.

The present paper focuses on the effects of personality traits on the levels of Internet addiction and cyberchondria and their consequent effects on well-being. For the purposes of the research, mediation analyses were carried out, clarifying the infl uence of personality traits on well-being mediated by Internet addiction, cyberchondria and anxiety aroused by online health information seeking. It was established that Neuroticism leads to decreased well-being through the mediating infl uence of health anxiety, escalation and persistence of health concerns. Health anxiety is a mediator in the relationship between Openness to Experience and well-being. It was established that low levels of Agreeableness and Conscientiousness, and high levels of Openness, and Neuroticism, infl uence Internet addiction, which in turn leads to decreased well-being. Furthermore, we established the mediated infl uence of Internet addiction on the tendency for cyberchondria and health anxiety through using the Internet for health information and judgment biases.

W ujęciu rozwojowym starość stanowi tak samo ważny etap życia jak każdy inny. Poznanie psychologicznych aspektów starzenia się oraz różnych czynników mających wpływ na poczucie satysfakcji z obecnej sytuacji życiowej osób w wieku późnej dorosłości stanowi o prawidłowościach procesu adaptacji do starości. Ważnym elementem tego procesu wydają się być działania mające na celu inkluzję tej szczególnie podatnej na wykluczenie społeczne grupy. W tym kontekście warto zastanowić się nad rolą rodziny, społeczeństwa, a także predyspozycjami osobowymi, które mogą mieć wpływ na proces pomyślnej adaptacji do starości, w tym możliwość realizowania potrzeb i podnoszenia jakości życia seniorów. W niniejszym artykule, odwołując się do założeń teorii aktywności oraz teorii wycofania się, przedstawione zostaną próby aplikacji badań własnych, dotyczących osobowych aspektów mających wpływ na poczucie dobrostanu osób aktywnych zawodowo w okresie późnej dorosłości.
Old age is, in terms of development, just as important stage of life, like everyone else. Understanding the psychological aspects of aging and the different factors affecting the feeling of satisfaction with the current life situation of people in their late adulthood, it is about the regularities of adaptation to old age. An important element of this process appear to be efforts to inclusion of this group, who are particularly vulnerable to social exclusion. In this context, it is worth considering the role of family, society, and personal predisposition that can affect the process of successful adaptation to old age, including the ability to meet the needs and improve the quality of life of seniors. In this article, referring to the assumptions of the theory of activity and the theory of withdrawal, will be presented trials application own research on the personal aspects affecting the sense of well-being of economically active persons in late adulthood.

The research participants were people aged 60-79. The research shows that higher employment status contributes to their psychological well-being, primarily to positive interaction with others and their ability to master the environment. The research has proved that higher education and confidence in financial well-being of employed people reduces the intensity of asthenic emotions, while in those unemployed it increases the intensity of asthenic emotions. The employed are more self-confident, their self-confidence contributes to their psychological well-being. Self-confidence of the unemployed people while enhancing psychological well-being at the same time increases sthenic emotions. It is shown that reticence as self-attitude modality plays a greater role in the personality structure of the elderly people who are unemployed. The conclusions are made on weak and strong points of employment in late adulthood

Cultural intelligence is described as the ability of a person to behave adequately in culturally diverse environments. It involves comprehending the effects of cultural background on the attitudes of people for auspicious participation in any social setting. Cultural intelligence may be positively and significantly correlated with professional well-being among English as foreign language (EFL) teachers. So, the present study sought to investigate the correlation between Turkish EFL state school teachers' cultural intelligence and their professional well-being. A sample including 120 EFL state school teachers completed two questionnaires: (1) Cultural Intelligence Scale developed by Cultural Intelligence Center (2005); and (2) the Scale of Teacher Perception of Professional Well-Being developed by Yildirim, Arastaman and Dasci (2016). The results of the study indicated significant correlations between Turkish EFL state school teachers' cultural intelligence and their professional well-being. This study may help English Language Teaching (ELT) departments to implement materials to their curriculum for aiding EFL teachers in terms of developing cultural intelligence.  Furthermore, this paper makes a unique contribution to the area of cultural intelligence by identifying whether there is a relationship between cultural intelligence and professional well-being.

Satisfied desires make you happy. Desires are fantasy narratives a  person tells about her life and goals. They focus on intentional objects that are happiness-makers for the person: to achieve them is supposed to make one happy. Normally, such objects are good things and their context is seen in a positive manner. However, the goals may also be hurtful, as the person herselfsees it. These are, at least sometimes, mad desires. To explain them, it is not enough to say that they are impulsive and irrational, unconscious, or that they are good in disguise. I explain what this means and give some examples. I also consider the thesis that satisfaction of desire is less than full happiness, which may well be true. This becomes clear when we think of moral choices.

Most of the current research has found that highly religious people have better well-being compared to people with low religiousness. However, the former group is not immune from occasionally feeling anger toward God, which has an adverse effect on well-being. The purpose of this research is to study whether anger toward God moderates the effect of religiousness on the well-being of Christian college students. The data were derived from 228 respondents (55 male) from a religious university using the Four Basic Dimensions of Religiousness (4-BDRS), the Attitude toward God Scale (ATGS-9), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). The results of the moderation analysis using Process version 3 demonstrated that Anger toward God significantly moderated the effect of religiousness toward well-being (b = .01, 95% Cl [.001, .023], t = 2.14, p < .05). The higher the level of anger toward God, the lesser the effect of religiousness on well-being. Therefore, it is essential for students to resolve their divine struggles. The implications and applications of this study are discussed.

This study explored the links between health and well-being to the grit of DepEd Regional Office IX employees during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 75 employees participated in this descriptive correlational research through an online and offline self-report questionnaire. The data analysis utilized multiple linear regression to determine grit’s predictors from the mental health continuum of emotional, psychological, and social well-being. The study showed that health and well-being factors positively correlated with employees’ grit. Moreover, the results revealed that the employees’ psychological and social well-being were significant predictors of grit while emotional well-being did not significantly predict employees’ grit. These research outcomes affirm that if the workers are psychologically and socially healthy, they tend to perform better. These outcomes suggest that workplace measures should be in place to promote workers’ health and well-being for them to fulfill their job effectively and efficiently.

The broadly understood human functioning in the situation of professional work is the subject of interest in many fields of science. Nowadays, more and more often the attention of theoreticians and psychologists - researchers focuses on issues related to occupational burnout experienced in the workplace, ways of dealing with it and its consequences manifest in many spheres of human life. Particularly exposed - on the effects of professional burnout - by a social group are representatives of high-risk occupations. Analyzing the theoretical and empirical aspects of the impact of burnout on the functioning of people, an attempt was made to answer the question: What conclusions can be drawn in order to strengthen the welfare of members of disposable groups?

This study was designed to explore the relationship between family functioning, coping strategies, and psychological well-being (PWB). It is hypothesized that coping strategies would mediate the relationship between family functioning and PWB. Data were collected from participants during lockdown (N = 224) including male (n=97) and female (n=127) by using a convenient sampling technique. Family functioning, Coping strategies, and PWB were measured using the ICPS Family Functioning Scale, Cope Inventory, and Flourishing Scale, respectively. The Pearson product-moment correlation analysis indicated a significant relationship among family functions sub-scales, coping strategies sub-scales, and PWB. The results suggested a mediating role of active coping between subscales of family functioning and psychological well-being.

Positive psychology was founded on three main pillars: positive emotions, positive character traits associated with good living and positive institutions that create conditions for students to flourish (Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). Nevertheless, the research in psychology so far has been concentrating on positive emotions and character strengths. Enabling institutions have been the least well studied of the three pillars. A salient additional perspective, as MacIntyre and Mercer (2014) propound, would be to concentrate on the context in which students can experience enjoyment and flourish in foreign language learning. I try to fill the niche by analyzing a language school in the further education context in Poland which seems to be a positive institution. I base my study around the two criteria: enabling success and promoting positive language learning environments or student well-being. The language school is analysed from three different angles: physical, pedagogical and psychological by means of an ethnographical research method and participant observation. The study is carried out in order to answer the research question: Can the school be labelled as a positive institution? The results demonstrate that the institution enables success as well as provides a positive learning environment and thus could be regarded as positive. The study is hoped to have contributed to positive psychology research by demonstrating what it means to be a positive institution in practice.

In accordance with the concept of A. Adler (1933/1986) – the community feeling is an individual characteristic which is relatively stable throughout life. It refers to an inner relationship of one person with other people: a feeling of unity with others or separation from others. People with high community feeling are motivated in their actions by striving towards the common good, whereas people with low community feeling intend to exhibit their superiority over others in their actions, which would allow them to compensate for their inner feeling of inferiority. On the basis of the Adler concept the following hypotheses were formulated: There is a negative connection between the community feeling and anxiety. The community feeling is positively connected with self-esteem and psychological well-being. A slight increase in the community feeling can be observed with age. The community feeling increases in the age of middle adulthood. 585 people between 20 to 65 years of age were examined. Methods: Community Feeling Questionnaire, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-Being. The hypotheses assumed were verified.

In this article, we examine the notion of well-being in light of the relationship between positive and normative economics. Having identified four interrelationships between possible theoretical developments within the two fields, we propose a framework for the analysis of normative economic theories. The starting point for these considerations were competing stances on well-being proposed by neoclassical welfare economics, Robert Sugden, Amartya Sen, and Daniel Hausman.

In the article reasons for “education in possession” are introduced. The author defines the concept of “education in possession” in terms of educational objectives and means of their realization which are to help people in conscious and responsible choices related to fulfilling their vital needs using effectively available material resources. In the approach applied instead of looking at the problem from the point of view of idealistically set goals and directions of education, a question has been asked if acquiring and possessing material goods can provide clear advantages for individuals in relation to the quality of their lives. Such advantages are considered to serve as standards for the appropriateness of people’s choices and at the same time as benchmarks for educational objectives. The author, drawing conclusions from the results of numerous studies on the relationship between psychological well-being and material wealth, shows that wealth fulfils its function in relation to the fulfillment of human needs in the area of necessary comfort and in relation to the effectiveness of individuals’ everyday activities. Beyond that material strivings seem to be psychologically disadvantageous and lose their importance. After reaching a certain level being wealthier does not mean being happier, because the obtained surplus of possessions, being unnecessary, requires dealing with additional costs of the psychological nature. These psychological costs of material wealth have their roots in external and internal factors. The former are connected with objective discrepancies in wealth within societies and cultural rules and values, the latter with a type of motivation for acquiring material possession, nature of material goals, an individual level of materialism, a conflict between values, and a way of managing material resources. The avoidance of the costs described is treated in the article as a major educational objective in the field of “education in possession”.

Introduction and aim. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the major reproductive health issues, thought to be multifactorial, needs serious attention as a dual burden (health and economic) mainly for developing countries like India, due to its rapid rise (30%) in the last couple of years. Therefore, widespread and liberal screening for this disorder towards prognosis, diagnosis and intervention seems to be an urgent area of research. In this background, the present study attempts to unravel the association of salivary microbial diversity and PCOS. Material and methods. To achieve the purpose 100 clinically diagnosed PCOS individuals and 110 age matched non-PCOS participants from Bengalee Hindu caste population, West Bengal, India was considered. Obtained salivary samples were identified with 16S rDNA amplification and microbial diversity were determined by Alu I restriction enzyme digestion. Results. The present study revealed an explicit pattern of DNA fragment lengths varied between 200 bp and 225 bp in PCOs in comparison to the non-PCOS group. Conclusion. The cardinal feature of the present study as the first attempt from India envisaged, utilization of salivary microbial diversity as an additional potential and economizing biomarker for PCOS that stimulate new horizon of research in 21st century’s anthropology – the anthropology of microbes.

Background. The negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health are still present today and are the subject of international research. The present cross-sectional quantitative study aimed to assess depression, anxiety and stress as well as mental health and well-being among Hungarian adults. Material and methods. The online survey study consisted of two data collections: the first survey was conducted in the spring of 2022 with the participation of 482 adults, while the second survey was performed in the spring of 2023 with 1157 adults. The questionnaire contained questions on sociodemographic data, about subjective mental status and characteristics of mental health. Results. During the one year passed since the last pandemic wave, mitigation of the symptoms of depression and stress and the worsening of anxiety symptoms was observed among the Hungarian adult population. A slight improvement of emotional and psychological well-being but a mild deterioration of social well-being was experienced in the same timeframe in the year following the pandemic. Conclusions. Long-term monitoring of the population’s mental status is justified, and the attention of professionals working in the field of mental health improvement is again directed to the necessity of prevention and intervention programs targeting vulnerable groups.
Wprowadzenie. Negatywne z punktu widzenia zdrowia psychicznego skutki pandemii COVID-19 nadal są obecne i pozostają przedmiotem międzynarodowych badań. Niniejsze ilościowe badanie przekrojowe miało na celu ocenę depresji, lęku i stresu, a także zdrowia psychicznego i dobrostanu u dorosłych Węgrów. Materiał i metody. Przeprowadzone przez Internet badanie ankietowe składało się z dwóch zbiorów danych: pierwsze badanie przeprowadzono wiosną 2022 r. z udziałem 482 osób dorosłych, a drugie badanie przeprowadzono wiosną 2023 r. z udziałem 1157 osób dorosłych. Kwestionariusz zawierał pytania dotyczące danych społeczno-demograficznych, subiektywnego stanu psychicznego i charakterystyki zdrowia psychicznego. Wyniki. W ciągu roku od ostatniej fali pandemii zaobserwowano złagodzenie objawów depresji i stresu oraz pogorszenie objawów lękowych wśród dorosłej populacji Węgier. W tym samym okresie w roku następującym po pandemii odnotowano niewielką poprawę w zakresie dobrostanu emocjonalnego i psychicznego, ale również łagodne pogorszenie dobrostanu społecznego. Wnioski. Długoterminowe monitorowanie stanu psychicznego populacji jest uzasadnione, a uwaga specjalistów zajmujących się dziedziną poprawy zdrowia psychicznego jest ponownie skierowana na konieczność wdrożenia programów profilaktycznych i interwencyjnych ukierunkowanych na szczególnie wrażliwe grupy.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przegląd badań naukowych dotyczących problematyki dobrostanu (well-being) uzdolnionych dzieci i młodzieży. Przyjęto procedurę przeglądu systematycznego w oparciu o protokół Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (Page et al. 2021). Analizie poddano 15 artykułów opublikowanych w latach 2005–2022 w recenzowanych czasopismach naukowych. Analizy pokazały, że nie można jednoznacznie stwierdzić, czy uzdolnienia są czynnikiem ryzyka, czy też czynnikiem chroniącym dla subiektywnego poczucia dobrostanu dzieci i młodzieży uzdolnionej. Jednocześnie wyniki badań publikowane w większości analizowanych tekstów nie wskazały istotnych statystycznie różnic między poczuciem dobrostanu subiektywnego, jak i psychicznego uczniów uzdolnionych w porównaniu do uczniów o przeciętnych zdolnościach. W badaniach subiektywnego poczucia dobrostanu uzdolnionych dzieci i młodzieży wykorzystuje się szereg skal odnoszących się do różnych obszarów psychofizycznego funkcjonowania człowieka, np. nastroju, stresu, poczucia własnej skuteczności, zainteresowań, poczucia samotności, poczucia humoru, klimatu szkolnego, co pozwala na holistyczne spojrzenie na analizowane zjawisko.
The purpose of this article is to review recent literature on the subjective well-being of gifted and talented students and to consider its practical implications. Fifteen articles were reviewed, published between 2005 and 2022, and selected according to a systematic protocol from two widely used online databases. The analysis showed that it could not be clearly stated whether giftedness is a risk or a protective factor for gifted and talented children’s and adolescents’ subjective well-being. Simultaneously, the research results published in most of the analyzed articles did not indicate statistically significant differences between the sense of subjective well-being and psychological well-being of gifted and talented students compared to average-ability students. Studies on the well-being of gifted children and young people employ a number of scales relating to different areas of human psychophysical functioning, i.e.: mood, stress, sense of self-efficacy, interests, sense of loneliness, sense of humor, atmosphere in school, which allows a holistic view of the analyzed phenomenon.

The study aimed to examine whether the students’ psychological well-being and online school burnout are mediators in the association between relational resources and engaging in risky behaviour by adolescents. 186 primary and secondary school students took part in an online survey. Students’ psychological well-being was a mediator in the association between relational resources and socially unacceptable stimulating behaviours, while e-learning burnout mediated the relationship between relational resources and health and life-threatening behaviours. The findings emphasise the critical role of strengthening the students’ potential and stress resilience and building a support social network.
