Opis:
The Baltic is a stratified sea. The upper layer is under the influence of atmospheric and terrestial factors. The mechanisms of these external factors on the surficial and subsurface water layer are well recognised but the vertical exchange in the water body is still not sufficiently investigated. Field measurements at sea are time consuming and expensive. A model of the Baltic Sea distributed to and accessible by institutions investigating the Baltic Sea is advantageous because of easier exchange modelled data. The modelling, especially of the surface layer is important due to the fact that outside the coastal zone continuous measurements of physical parameters is difficult. The comparison between measured in situ and modelled data serves as a tool for the corrections to HIROMB resulting in better approximation of real phenomena occurring in the Baltic Sea. Temperature and salinity values obtained on board rlv Baltica during the POLRODEX'97 expetriment were compared with modelled values. The analysis showed significant differences between in situ measurements and obtained from the HIROMB model.

Opis:
This work deals with the changes in sea surface temperature (SST) in selected grids located along the West Greenland Current (Fig. 1). The West Greenland Current is a warm current, which transports warm waters to the bay/ gulf of the Baffin Sea and in this way has a great influence on the formation of ice cover and on air temperature in this area. The Reynolds's data set, version SST OI v.1., covering values of mean monthly SST in grids 1ox1o has been used as the data source. Yearly temperatures for selected grids have been calculated on the basis of mean monthly temperatures. The Reynolds's data set covers whole years from the period 1982-2002 (21years). This period is especially interesting because during these years (and also at present) an advanced process of sea ice cover degradation and an increase in air temperature has been observed in Arctic. At Greenland, especially during the past few years, an advanced process of ice melting on land was noted - summer ablation reaches the level of 1600-2000m. That is why changes in SST at the same time may also be interesting. Trends in chronological series of mean yearly values of SST in grids located along the West Greenland Current ([59°N, 44°W], [62°N, 52°W], [66°N, 56°W], [70°N, 58°W], [74°N, 60°W] and [76°N, 72°W] ) have been analysed. Such an analysis indicated that in all grids of the West Greenland Current the trends in water temperature prove to be positive and that these trends are statistically relevant (p < 0.05 ) in nearly all grids. An exception to this pattern is the sea area extending around the Cape Farewell (grid [59, 44] - the first part of the West Greenland Current} where the trends are very low and statistically not relevant (Tab. 1). The highest values of trends can be observed in grids [62, 52] (+0.059deg./year) and [74, 60] (+0.051deg./year) resulting in the increase in SST by 1.24°C and 1.07°C over the period of 21 years. These grids are located in the initial and final parts of the West Greenland Current. Far weaker trends were observed in central part of the current [70, 58] - +0.030deg./year and in grid [76, 72] - +0.035 deg/year. Yearly temperatures of water in the West Greenland Current prove to show strong correlation (see Fig. 2). The mean monthly values of SST have also been analysed. The highest values of trends (statistically relevant) were noted in grid [74, 60] in August (+0.193deg/year) and in September (+0.136deg/year) thus giving in the analysed period the increase in SST by 4.05°C and 2.86°C. Such distribution of trends in time indicates that the role of the summer warming of the sea surface has increased. Positive trends in spring and autumn months in grids [62, 52] and [66, 56] are statistically relevant. In grid [70, 58] positive trends are observed both in summer months as well as in winter ones and in the northernmost located grids positive and statistically relevant trends are observed in almost all months during which waters are ice free. Yearly values of SST in the south part of the West Greenland Current prove to show strong negative correlation with the Hurrell NAO index (r~ -0.7; see Fig. 4) the monthly values of SST show delayed correlation with the Hurrell NAO index; correlations which are statistically relevant were noted in the period from June to December, the maximum (r = -0.64 to ?0.74) in the period from August to October. Monthly and yearly values of SST which show statistically relevant correlation with the Hurrell NAO index disappear at latitude 67°N-68°N. In the analysed period the NAO index indicates weak negative trend which is not relevant (-0.052/year), however correlation of yearly SST with NAO index over the analysed period are statistically relevant, e.g. in grid 66°N, 056°W, they explain 45% of the observed changeability in SST (R = 0.69, F(1.19) = 17.6, p< 0.0005).

The work presents changes of oxygen indices in carp ponds during the summer season. The basis of the research were regular water tests conducted in two ponds: Mydlniki II intended for carp farming in the second year of fish production cycle and Bocian used for carp farming in the third (final) year of breeding. The temperature of pond water in July and August was optimal for development and farming of cyprinid fish and ranged from 16.6 to 30.5 °C. The lowest value of oxygen dissolved in water (6.4 mg·dm sup>-3) was registered in Mydlniki II pond and was higher than the oxygen optimum for carp (5 mg·dm sup>-3). Oxygen saturation in water of fish ponds exceeded the optimum upper limit value (168%) on a few dates, however, it posed no lethal threat for fish. In August in Bocian pond oxygen saturation fell within the range of optimal values, creating better conditions for fish development. In the secondary pond (Mydlniki II) it was found that oxygen saturation in water on 12 dates was lower than the low optimal value (96%).

The paper presents the dynamics of daily water temperature fluctuations in Lake Kierskie (West Poland) and determines the effect of air temperatures and wind speed on the variability of the parameter (water temperature). The analysis was based on hourly water temperature values from the period from May 2012 to January 2018. The data analysis permitted the description of the thermal regime of waters in the lake in the hourly cycle in reference to each month, and designation of months characterised by the highest and lowest stability of water temperatures. More than half of the analysed days was characterised by a change in water temperature not exceeding 1°C. The course of water temperature showed strongly positive correlations with air temperature, and weak correlations with wind speed. Water temperatures in the lake were correlated the strongest with air temperatures with a 24 h time step.

Opis:
Water temperature is one of the basic physical parameters of rivers and lakes. Rising temperature can transform these ecosystems over a broad range of factors (water mixing, water quality, biological conditions, etc.). In the case of rivers, their thermal regimes also can be modified by local conditions (e.g., tree cover, adjoining water bodies, etc.). In this paper, we address the functioning of the river-lake system in northern Poland (Kocunia River-Lake Sławianowskie) in terms of the effect of the lake on temperature conditions in the river. Dependencies in daily water temperatures between stations located above and below the lake were assessed with linear regression. Based on daily morning water temperatures for the period 2012-2017, it was determined that water temperature in the river below the lake was higher than at the measurement site located above the lake by an average of 1.1°C. The greatest differences were recorded in summerautumn months when average monthly downstream water temperatures were as much as 3.9°C higher than upstream water temperatures. This phenomenon is an example of a local factor (the lake) magnifying global factors, i.e. rising temperatures associated with climate change. The information in this paper can provide future reference for decision makers and state institutions with responsibility for measures aimed at reducing the effects of climate change.

Subject of the study are changes of the water temperature occurring on the Polish Baltic coast during years 1951-2010 (in Kołobrzeg, due to deficiencies in the data, for the years 1957-2010). It is expressed in the form of a linear trend. The study was based on the monthly average temperature of the sea water in the following stations: Świnoujście, Międzyzdroje, Kołobrzeg, Władysławowo, Hel and Gdynia. For most of analyzed stations an increase in average annual temperature of the water were observed. The largest one was recorded in Gdynia. In Świnoujście there were no significant changes in water temperature except for the slight its drop in June. A significant increase in the water temperature occurred in Międzyzdroje in February, March, April and May; in Kołobrzeg in January and March; in Władysławowo in January, February, March, April and June and in Hel and Gdynia in February, March, April, May, July and August. The greatest changes were in April in Hel and Gdynia.
W większości analizowanych stacji (oprócz Świnoujścia i Kołobrzegu) nastąpił wzrost średniej rocznej temperatury wody. Największy odnotowano w Gdyni, gdzie temperatura wody wzrastała średnio o około 0,02°C rocznie. Istotny statystycznie wzrost temperatury wody nastąpił w Międzyzdrojach w lutym, marcu, kwietniu i maju, w Kołobrzegu w styczniu i marcu, we Władysławowie w styczniu, lutym, marcu, kwietniu i w czerwcu, a w Helu i Gdyni w lutym, marcu, kwietniu, maju, lipcu i sierpniu. Największe zmiany następowały w kwietniu (w Helu i Gdyni powyżej 0,03°C rocznie). W Świnoujściu nie wystąpiły istotne zmiany temperatury wody z wyjątkiem niewielkiego jej spadku w czerwcu.

Opis:
Kruszewski, Marsz and Zblewski (2003) found out that winter temperature of water in the Norwegian Current indicates quite strong, occurring with a delay, correlations with the air temperature at Spitsbergen, Bjornoya, Hopen and Jan Mayen. Strong and statistically significant correlations between the mean sea surface temperature (SST) in the period January-March in grid 2°x2° [67°N, 10°E] and the monthly temperature of July, August and September with SST are marked the same year (3-5 month delay) and with the air temperature in November and December the following year (18-20 month delay). Waters of the Norwegian Current transport warm, of higher salinity Atlantic waters. Winter SST of the Atlantic Ocean characterizes the heat resources in the deeper layers of waters. SST in grid [67,10] in an indirect way characterizes heat resources carried with the Atlantic waters into the Norwegian Sea and farther to the Arctic together with the West Spitsbergen and Nordcap currents. The aim of this work is to describe the influence caused by changes in heat resources transported to the Arctic with the Norwegian Current on the annual temperature of air in the region of Hopen, Spitsbergen and Jan Mayen. The examined period covers the years of 1982?2002 and is marked by great warming in this area. The analysis of spatial distribution of correlation coefficients justifies Kruszewski and others (2003) hypothesis of mechanism causing the delayed influence of changes in water heat resources on the air temperature in this region The observed positive correlations between winter SST in [67,10] grid and air temperature in July, August and September result in the influence of changing water heat resources on atmospheric circulation noted in these months. Positive correlations in November and December in the following year result from the ?onflow? to the Arctic of warmer and of high salinity Atlantic waters. They have influence on the ice formation on the Greenland and Barents seas thus causing that influence of changing heat resources carried with waters on air temperature is much stronger. The analysis of regression made it possible to establish the correlation between annual air temperature at a given station (Ts) and winter water temperature (Tw) in [67,10] grid. Annual temperature in a year k is a function of two variables: Tw of the same year as the temperature Ts (Tw(k)) and Tw from the preceding year (Tw(k-1)): Ts(k) = A + b . Tw(k) + c . Tw(k-1) Table 3 contains the values of constant term and regression coefficients as well as statistical characteristics of formulas for the analysed stations. Both variables Tw from the year k and the year k-1 explain about 40% of the changeability in mean annual air temperature of the observed 20-year period at the analysed stations. This means that only one element, i.e. heat resource in the waters of the Norwegian Current, defined with the value Tw, determines more than 1/3 of the whole annual changeability in air temperature in the region located from Jan Mayen up to Hopen and from Tromso up to Ny Alesund. The station for which maximum explanation may be applied (47.7%) is Hopen, the station where the positive trend in annual temperature is the highest (+0.090°C/year). The values of regression coefficients b and c prove that the inertial factor connected with advection of the Atlantic waters has greater role in the changeability in mean annual temperature of air. The analysis of formula [2] indicates that great increases and decreases in annual temperature at the discussed stations will be observed in a k year if the values of Tw in two following years are significantly higher or lower than the mean ones. That is why the occurrence of positive trend in value of Tw should be followed by relatively systematic increase in annual air temperature at stations located at the described region. A positive trend in annual air temperature was noted at the analysed stations over the period 1982?2002. At Jan Mayen its value is +0.067 (ą0.028)°C/year (p<0.026). When taking the estimated values of regression coefficients in the multiple regression connecting the annual temperature at Jan Mayen with the value of Tw (Table 1) and the same value of trend T equal to +0.023 then the value of annual trend in air temperature at Jan Mayen influenced by trend Tw equals 0.0598°C/year. The obtained result indicates that the whole or almost whole warming observed at Jan Mayen in the years 1983-2002 may be explained by direct and indirect influence of the increase in the value of Tw over that period.

Seasonal and multi-annual variability of river water temperature has been analysed based on data from 24 gauge stations of the IMGW network. It has been characterised by means of several values of the thermal regime parameters: mean annual, semi-annual (November-April, May-October) and amplitude. The variability of water temperature in the catchment and in the stream network has been estimated. Measurement data included seven stations at the Vistula river. On the background of natural variability, rivers or their segments have been distinguished where water temperature is impacted by anthropopressure.

A recent study has shown increased warming in the fjords of west Spitsbergen. Their location is critical, as they are situated along the main northward pathway of Atlantic Water (AW) which is a great source of heat to the Arctic Ocean and the fjords. In the light of ongoing warming, we aim to discuss differences between the fjords under northward transformation of oceanic waters. We compared summer hydrographic conditions in two fjords located in two opposite ends of west Spistbergen: Hornsund in the south and Kongsfjorden in the north. The study is based on high resolution CTD measurements collected during Arctic cruises between 2001 and 2015. The emphasis was put not only on differences in water temperature, salinity and water masses but also the freshwater content (FWC), AW transport and heat delivery to the fjords. In general, the water in Kongsfjorden is on average 18C warmer and its salinity is higher by 0.5 compared to Hornsund. It is also characterized by two times greater transport of AW and heat delivery to the fjord. On the other hand, Hornsund reveals two times higher FWC. Both fjords undergo a gradual warming due to an increased presence of Atlantic origin waters. The ongoing warming is accompanied by an increase in variability of temperature and salinity dependent on the domination of the Sørkapp Current (SC) or the West Spitsbergen Current (WSC) on the West Spitsbergen Shelf (WSS). Nonetheless, Hornsund remains more Arctic-type fjord compared to Kongsfjorden, due to stronger blocking by SC.

Present study describes about the effect of coolant water flow rate and coolant water temperature underside cooling slope on structural characteristics of casted AZ91 Mg alloy. Here, over the cooling slope, hot melt flows from top to bottom. Additionally, under the cooling slope, coolant water flows from bottom to top. Slurry gets obtained at bottom of cooling slope by pouring AZ91 Mg melt from top of the slope. Coolant water flow rate with coolant water temperature underside cooling slope warrant necessary solidification and shear to obtain AZ91 Mg slurry. Specifically, slurry at 5 different coolant water flow rates (4, 6, 8, 10, 12 lpm) and at 5 different coolant water temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35°C) underside cooling slope are delivered inside metal mould. Modest coolant water flow rate of 8 lpm with coolant water temperature of 25°C (underside cooling slope) results fairly modest solidification that would enormously contribute towards enhanced structural characteristics. As, quite smaller/bigger coolant water flow rate/temperature underside cooling slope would reason shearing that causes inferior structural characteristics. Ultimately, favoured microstructure was realized at 8 lpm coolant water flow rate and 25°C coolant water temperature underside cooling slope with grain size, shape factor, primary α-phase fraction and grain density of 63 µm, 0.71, 0.68 and 198, respectively. Correspondingly, superior mechanical properties was realized at 8 lpm coolant water flow rate and 25°C coolant water temperature underside cooling slope with tensile strength, elongation, yield strength and hardness of 250 MPa, 8%, 192 MPa and 80 HV, respectively.

Opis:
Based on the results of regular monitoring and remote sensing data the patterns of water temperature and ice regime of the Dnipro River within Kyiv, as affected by global warming and a hydropower plant, were identified. The characteristic features of this stretch of the river are increasing water temperature, and the decreasing thickness and duration of ice cover. The largest water temperature increase is in summer, with a somewhat smaller increase in autumn. The increase of water temperature in spring is much less than the increase in air temperature. In summer, the gradient of water temperature increase is a little bit less than that of air temperature. In autumn, the gradient of water temperature increase is larger than the gradient of air temperature increase. From April to August the lowest water temperature is usually observed near the Kyivska hydropower plant (HPP), which is located upstream. During this period the water temperature downstream from HPP increases. The uneven daily operation of HPP causes the alternation of areas with different temperature along the Dnipro River. In the cold season the water temperature in the Dnipro River is usually higher than in other nearby urban water bodies. Freezing of the water area usually starts from the small and shallow lakes and ponds. The main branch of the Dnipro River freezes last. On the whole, the sequence of ice melting on the waterbodies is the reverse of the freezing process. The longest ice cover duration in spring is observed in the bays with small water exchange, mainly located at a large distance from Kyivska HPP.

The study attempts to answer the following question: Does human impact contribute to changes recorded in the Ner river ice regime? In replying to this question, data on water consumption in Lodz (Łódź) (a city in central Poland) in 1951-2017 were used, as well as observations of ice cover and all ice phenomena for the same period. The ice regime and water temperature of the river have changed over the past 70 years. The changes result not only from changes caused by global warming but also from additional fluctuations in this temperature as determined by changes in the quantity and quality of wastewater discharged into the river from the Lodz city agglomeration. The frequency of ice phenomena in the river decreased, and their duration dropped by almost half. This tendency was compounded by a decrease in number of days with ice phenomena, which in turn was caused by a rapid increase in the amount of waste and thermally polluted waters supplied from Lodz. The river water temperature has now stopped increasing. The course of the river ice regime now resembles that of a natural watercourse again.

The Indian marine environment supports employment for over 200 million people, including revenue of nearly $7 billion per annum. However, ecological goods and services of the shallow coast and the marine environment of the Indian peninsula are being affected by recurrent blooms of microalgae. One hundred and six published literature, starting from the first report in 1908 to 2017, were reviewed to investigate the historical occurrences of marine microalgal blooms (MMBs) around the Indian peninsula. 154 MMBs comprising 24 genera and 7 classes were reported during the study period. Noctiluca (dinophyceae) and Trichodesmium (cyanophyceae) bloom contributed 34.4% and 31.8% of total blooms. PCA revealed that high sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity were significant driving forces for Trichodesmium blooms formation, while high nutrients (NO3-N, PO4-P, and SiO4-Si) and low salinity triggered prymnesiophyceae, raphidophyceae, bacillariophyceae and most of the dinophyceae blooms. Noctiluca blooms were linked with both eutrophication and the abundance of prey organisms. HABs were generally dinophyceae dominated and were associated with mass mortality of aquatic fauna, human intoxication, paralytic, and ciguatera shellfish poisoning and even death. Increasing SST and anthropogenic influences around the Indian peninsula could increase the occurrences of MMBs (including HABs) and the number of causative taxa. Proper safety measures such as routine monitoring of phycotoxin levels in the environment and local seafood are required to be put in place in other to protect the health of the public.

Dynamic changes in stream water temperature are caused by thermal energy exchange at the interface between the water and the atmosphere, and between the water and the streambed. This heat flux is the result of physical processes which are stimulated by external drivers that control water temperature both in temporal and spatial scales. For streams, the most characteristic are diurnal fluctuations of temperature. For the purposes of this paper, electronic data loggers were used which allowed a presentation of the diurnal cycles of water temperature in a small lowland river. The measurements confirmed that meteorological conditions have a significant impact on the diurnal dynamics of stream temperature.

The study focuses on short-term changes in surface water temperature in Polish lakes, and is based upon the experimental measurements of water temperature conducted every 60 minutes during the years 1971–2015. 19 lakes were selected on the grounds of their morphometric properties. The examinations were carried out in the system of expeditionary measurements (up to 8 days) and stationary measurements (over 2 months), and included temperature of surface water and its vertical distribution. The analysis of the results showed that temperature differences of water (daily amplitudes) were observed in both time and spatial distribution. The biggest differences in water temperature occurred during spring warming, and often reached 4–5°C, while rarely exceed 2°C in the remaining periods of the yearly cycle. The mean day value occurs twice; in the morning between 8:00 (7:00 GMT) and 11:00 (10:00 GMT), and in the evening at 20:00 (19:00 GMT) and 22:00 (21:00 GMT). Daily changes in the vertical distribution of water temperature are clearly visible down to the depth of 2.5–3.5 m, whereas are just perceptible to the depth of 5.5–7.0 m.
Praca dotyczy krótkotrwałych zmian temperatury wody powierzchniowej w jeziorach w Polsce. Badania prowadzono w systemie pomiarów ekspedycyjnych (do 8 dni) i stacjonarnych (ponad 2 miesiące) i obejmowały temperaturę powierzchniową wody oraz jej pionowy rozkład.

Opis:
The paper concentrates on seasonal and spatial variations of sub-daily water temperature dynamics in lowland agricultural streams. Temperature monitoring was carried out in 24 sampling sites distributed along the tributaries of the Wkra River during the hydrological year 2021. Statistical analysis of the obtained data documented the highest water temperature dynamics in the morning, from 5:00 to 9:00 CEST, while the lowest - from 14:00 to 18:00 CEST. Seasonally, greater water dynamics were noted in the winter, expressed by a coefficient of variation reaching up to 100%. Spatially, the highest dynamics occurred in sites with the lowest proportion of riparian vegetation, while the lowest dynamics was related to higher catchment area. In the winter, the minimum daily values were recorded most frequently in the morning hours, while maximum values in the afternoon. A similar pattern was observed in the summer, but with much lower dispersion of the relative frequencies. It was found that in the winter, the dominant influence on temperature dynamics was exerted in the upstream catchment area, while in the summer, a negative relationship with riparian shade was marked. The findings suggest that the presence of riparian vegetation reduces diurnal dynamics of water temperature and is simultaneously extremely important in prolonging the duration of optimum fluctuation, responsible for the proper development of poikilothermic organisms.

Since 1987 annual summer cruises to the Nordic Seas and Fram Strait have been conducted by the IO PAN research vessel Oceania under the long-term monitoring program AREX. Here we present a short description of measurements and preliminary results obtained during the open ocean part of the AREX 2016 cruise. Spatial distributions of Atlantic water temperature and salinity in 2016 are similar to their long-term mean fields except for warmer recirculation of Atlantic water in the northern Fram Strait. The longest observation record from the section N along 768300N reveals a steady increase of Atlantic water salinity, while temperature trend depends strongly on parametrization used to define the Atlantic water layer. However spatially averaged temperature at different depths indicate an increase of Atlantic water temperature in the whole layer from the surface down to 1000 m.

Opis:
This article presents the development of sea ice cover in the waters of central and western part of the Hornsund Fjord, as well as in its foreshore during winter season 2006–2007. Due to long lasting (November-March) high air temperatures (Fig. 1) the sea ice cover development of Hornsund was different from the average one. Significant decrease in air temperature was observed only in April (mean monthly –8.7°C). In such thermal conditions the maximum thickness of sea ice which might have been formed in the outer, sheltered from high seas areas of the fjord, estimated with the help of Zubov formula, could reach 47cm in January, 58cm in February, 66cm in March, up to 77–80cm in the period from April to May 2007 (Tab.1). In summer and autumn 2006 only brash glacier ice and small icebergs broken off the glaciers endings on the sea in Hornsund drifted in the waters of the fjord. At this time brash glacier ice and growlers broken off the Hans Glacier periodically concentrated densely along the coast of Isbjorhamna. The first forms of new ice (slush and grease ice as well as shuga) were observed close to the west coast of Isbjornhamna from 6th October till 3rd November. The second period of sea ice formation started on 7th December. However, the ice disappeared quickly because of strong winds. Not sooner than in the middle of January when severe frost was noted, a permanent ice cover was formed (young ice). But also this ice was broken and diverged in most part of the fjord. Fast ice was only observed in the internal waters of Hornsund, in the Brepollen, Burgerbukta and Samarinvagen bays. From the third decade of February till the end of April the ice cover of Hornsund experienced large fluctuations. During that period the entire area of Hornsund was covered with sea ice a few times. This phenomenon was noted when the allochtonic ice drifting in the waters of the Sorkapp Current entered western and central part of the fjord and when the central and inner parts were covered with ice formed in situ. This sea ice cover was several times destroyed by very strong east winds causing that most of ice was moved outside the fjord. At the beginning of May very strong E and SE winds caused ice removal from the axial part of Hornsund. Later, apart from two short episodes (19-29 May and 22-23 June) when open strips of allochtonic ice entered west and central part of the fjord, only single floes of broken-off the fast ice from Brepollen, Burgerbukta and Samarinvagen drifted in the waters of Hornsund. The ice season 2006/2007 ended on 19th July when the last floes of very rotten ice were observed drifting from the inside of the fjord with the tidal stream to its foreshore.

The first part of the Baltic Sea ecohydrodynamic model, based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), was validated by long-term observations of sea level, salinity and water temperature fluctuations. The modelled sea surface temperature (SST) fields were also compared to satellite images – satisfactory correlation coefficients were obtained. The model bias and efficiency coefficients of the modelled variables in relation to the observed values were determined. The quality of model simulations in relation to measured values was estimated with respect to spatial and seasonal variability in shallow and deep coastal waters as well as in the open sea. The results indicated the high quality of simulations by the hydrodynamic model.

Traditionally, upwelling-related studies in the Baltic Sea have been limited to the period from May to September. Based on wintertime in situ measurements at two nearshore locations in the Gulf of Finland, clear evidence of winter “warm” upwelling events was detected and analysed. The process was very common. At a 10 m deep location, upwelling caused water temperature (T) to switch from 0—1 to 4—5°C and salinity (S) to switch from 4.5 to 6 PSU; at 20 m depth it caused a switch in T between 1 and 2—4°C and in S between 5.5 and 6.8 PSU. Differently from summer upwelling, T and S variations were positively correlated to each other. Salinity variations remained roughly the same throughout the winter, whereas T differences were higher in winter onset, then decreased to ca. 1°C, and increased again after the process reversed to summer-type upwelling in April—May. Based on analysis of SatBaltyk (January to March) sea surface temperature and salinity product imagery, winter upwelling occurrence along the North Estonian coast was 21—28% over 2010—2021, and slightly less along the Finnish coast. Regarding S variations, winter upwelling occurred with roughly similar frequencies and impacts in the northern and southern parts of the gulf. However, the impacts on T and sea ice conditions were highly asymmetrical. Upwelling kept the Estonian coast ice-free longer and water temperatures slightly higher than at the Finnish coast. Winter upwelling as a phenomenon has long been ignored and therefore probably underestimated.

A new dataset of benthic foraminiferal assemblages from Adventfjorden (tributary fjord of Isfjorden, West Spitsbergen) was compared with the results of a study conducted by Zajączkowski et al. (2010) in Hornsund (West Spitsbergen). According to Nilsen et al. (2016), Atlantic water inflow to the Isfjorden Trough occurs more readily than to anywhere else along the shelf of Spitsbergen; thus, we compared the foraminiferal assemblages of the outwash Adventfjorden fjord, located in the Isfjorden system, with glacial Hornsund, located in southwest Spitsbergen. Despite the juxtaposition of Adventfjorden and Hornsund the data revealed varying impacts of shelf-transformed water (STW) on the benthic foraminiferal assemblages. Outer and central Adventfjorden was dominated by Adercotryma glomerata, Recurvoides turbinata and Spiroplectammina sp., reflecting the presence of STW, while abundant Melonis barleeanus in the central area of the fjord indicated a large flux of unaltered organic matter. Only the head of the fjord was dominated by the glaciomarine taxa Cassidulina reniforme and Elphidium clavatum. Foraminiferal fauna characteristic of STW-influenced environments (i.e., Nonionellina labradorica and R. turbinata) were also observed in outer Hornsund. However, the glacier-proximal taxa E. clavatum and C. reniforme were dominant throughout the fjord, demonstrating the impacts of meltwater and high sedimentation. Therefore, it is likely that in Hornsund, glacial impact is a major environmental factor, which is stronger than the influence of STW.

The study to determine thermal-oxygen changes and chemical properties of water in a flow-through pond was conducted between April 2004 and March 2005 in three vertical profiles. The study involved the determination of electrolytic conductivity and pH reaction of water as well as the content of nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen, total phosphorus and sulphates. Thermal stratification was not observed in the investigated pond with the maximum depth of 2.45 m, and oxygen content was represented by a clinograde curve. Biogenic element concentrations in the pond were determined by depth in the vertical profile, and they were subject to seasonal variation. The highest concentrations of mineral substances in water were reported in the bottom layers of the pond. Although the investigated pond is a flow-through water body, it accumulates biogenic elements.

Opis:
High-latitude fjords, very vulnerable to global change, are impacted by their land and ocean boundaries, and they may be influenced by terrestrial water discharges and oceanic water inputs into them. This may be reflected by temporal and spatial patterns in concentrations of biogeochemically important constituents. This paper analyses information relating to the total suspended matter (TSM) concentration in the Porsanger fjord (Porsangerfjorden), which is situated in the coastal waters of the Barents Sea. Water samples and a set of physical data (water temperature, salinity, inherent optical properties) were obtained during two field expeditions in the spring and summer of 2014 and 2015. Bio-optical relationships were derived from these measurements, enabling optical data to be interpreted in terms of TSM concentrations. The results revealed significant temporal variability of TSM concentration, which was strongly influenced by precipitation, terrestrial water discharge and tidal phase. Spatial distribution of TSM concentration was related to the bathymetry of the fjord, dividing this basin into three subregions. TSM concentrations ranged from 0.72 to 0.132 g m−3 at the surface (0–2 m) and from 0.5 to 0.67 g m−3 at 40 m depth. The average mineral fraction was estimated to be 44% at surface and 53% at 40 m.

Opis:
Under warming climates, heat waves (HWs) have occurred in increasing intensity in Europe. Also, public interest towards HWs has considerably increased over the last decades. The paper discusses the manifestations of the summer 2014 HW and simultaneously occurring coastal upwelling (CU) events in the Gulf of Finland. Caused by an anticyclonic weather pattern and persisting easterly winds, CUs evolved along the southern coast of the Gulf in four episodes from June to August. Based on data from coastal weather stations, 115 days-long measurements with a Recording Doppler Current Profiler (RDCP) oceanographic complex and sea surface temperature (SST) satellite images, the partly opposing impacts of these events are analysed. Occurring on the background of a marine HW (up to 26°C), the CU-forced SST variations reached about 20 degrees. At the 10 m deep RDCP mooring location, a drop from 21.5 to 2.9°C occurred within 60 hours. Salinity varied between 3.6 and 6.2 and an alongshore coastal jet was observed; the statistically preferred westerly current frequently flowed against the wind. Locally, the cooling effect of the CUs occasionally mitigated the overheating effects by the HWs both in the sea and on the marine-land boundary. However, in the elongated channel-like Gulf of Finland, upwelling at one coast is usually paired with downwelling at the opposite coast, and simultaneously or subsequently occurring HWs and CUs effectively contribute to heat transfer from the atmosphere to the water mass. Rising extremes of HWs and rapid variations by CUs may put the ecosystems under increasing stress.

Opis:
The work presents the results of studies on meteorological and hydrological determination of water temperature in the coastal zone of the Pomeranian Bay. Different statistical methods used in the study revealed that coastal water temperature is under the influence of temperature of air masses and water temperature of inland input. The influence of water temperature of the Lower Odra River on sea temperature was stronger especially during the Odra flooding events and periods of air circulation coming from south-east to north-west directions. The influence of air temperature was increased when air circulation from north-east was noticed. As correlation coefficients received as a result of synchronous relating water temperature values at Międzyzdroje to water temperature values at Gozdowice and air temperature values at Swinoujscie were highly statistically significant it was possible to describe water temperature at the coastal zone of the Pomeranian Bay using equations of simple and multiple regression.
U wybrzeży Zatoki Pomorskiej rozkład przestrzenny temperatury wód powierzchniowych oznacza się typowo sezonowym charakterem, uwarunkowanym rocznym rytmem temperatury powietrza oraz temperatury wód śródlądowych wypływających z Zalewu Szczecińskiego. Praca przedstawia wyniki badan nad meteorologicznymi i hydrologicznymi uwarunkowaniami temperatury wody w strefie brzegowej Zatoki Pomorskiej.

Opis:
Praca omawia wpływ zmian temperatury wody powierzchniowej (TPO) w południowej i środkowej części Prądu Zachodniogrenlandzkiego na zmiany temperatury powietrza na stacjach położonych na wschodnich wybrzeżach Kanady. Szeregi temperatury powietrza pochodzą ze zbioru Historical Adjusted Climate Database for Kanada, a dane o TPO ze zbioru Reynoldsa w wersji SST OI v.1. W okresie 1982-2002 na wszystkich analizowanych stacjach występują dodatnie, istotne statystycznie trendy temperatury powietrza. Pomiędzy szeregami TPO w wybranych gridach ([62°N, 52°W] i [66°N, 56°W]) a szeregami temperatury powietrza na badanych stacjach dominują związki synchroniczne. Najsilniejsze związki asynchroniczne zachodzą pomiędzy zmiennością TPO w środkowej części Prądu Zachodniogrenlandzkiego a temperaturą powietrza na stacjach położonych na Ziemi Baffina.
This work deals the influence of changes the sea surface temperature (SST) in south and the centre part of the West Greenland Current in relays of the air temperature (AT) on stations located on eastern sea-coasts of Canada (Fig.1). The West Greenland Current is a warm current, which transports warm waters to the bay/ gulf of the Baffin Sea and in this way has a great influence on the formation of ice cover and on air temperature in this area. The Reynolds?s data set, version SST OI v.1., covering values of mean monthly SST in grids 1°x1° has been used as the data source. Yearly temperatures for selected grids have been calculated on the basis of mean monthly temperatures. Series of the air temperature for selected Canadian stations proceed from the service HCCD (Historical Adjusted Climate Database for Canada). The period 1982-2002 is characterized with the distinct warming up of the climate on the northern hemisphere. Appears this i.a. an increase in air temperature and an advanced process of sea ice cover degradation. A reason of this warming up is the accumulation of the warm in surface layers of the ocean and his distribution by the oceanic circulation. Trends in chronological series of mean yearly values of AT on stations located along of eastern sea-coasts of Canada have been analysed. Such an analysis indicated that on all staion the trends in air temperature prove to be positive and that these trends are statistically relevant (p < 0.05 ) on all stations. The highest values of trends can be observed on stations in the central and southern part of Baffin Island. Courses of the one year's temperature of air on selected stations show almost in step reaching changes (Fig. 2). Passed correlational analysis showed that among investigated series SST in selected grids ([62°N, 52°W] and [66°N, 56°W]) located on the West Greenland Current and series AT on stations situated on eastern sea-coasts of Canada dominated synchronous relationships. With the example can be the relationship among SST in grid [66°N, 56°W] and AT on the station Cape Dyer, where appear high values of coefficients of correlation and the maximum of the power of the relationship fall on December +0.93 (Tab. 1). Research showed that the variability of the yearly sea surface temperature in grid [66°N, 56°W] indeed influence on the formation of yearly AT on selected stations. On the stations Cape Dyer and Iqaluit the variability of yearly SST explains the variability of yearly AT properly into 67 and 57% (Fig. 3). On the warm West Greenland Current the changes of the water temperature outdistance during changes of the air temperature on stations of eastern sea-coasts of Canada. Such asynchronous relationships are best visible among a June and May sea surface temperature in grid [66°N, 56°W] and yearly AT on stations located in the Northern part of Baffin Island - Fig.4 and among May SST in grid [66°N, 56°W] and yearly AT in the next year (Fig.5). Most strong synchronous and asynchronous relationships between the variability of the sea surface temperature in the central part of the West Greenland Current and the air temperature occur on stations located on the Baffin Island area.

Opis:
Obszary wewnętrznych zatok fiordu Hornsund stanowią zróżnicowane i podlegające dynamicznym zmianom środowisko.
The Hornsund fjord is located in the southwest part of Spitsbergen. This part is situated in the area of dynamic changes because of two periodically upcoming flows of water, warm West Spitsbergen current and cold East Spitsbergen current. These currents are changeable by means of their specific activities due to variable flow of some waters to the fjord that occur seasonally as well as in many years time. The changeability of physico-chemical conditions of the fjord waters have been monitored for many years by terms of warm years as well as seasonally. Despite of thorough literature conveying the issue of physico-chemical conditions of Isbjornhamna's waters there is not sufficient pieces of information tackling with some conditions that are in numerous bays in the depth of Hornsund fjord. During the biological research in Hornsund concerning inner bays in July of 2000 and 2002 year the measurement of temperature, salinity and conductivity of bottom layers of water were made. The research included the following bays: Brepollen by the forehead of Horn glacier, Hyrne glacier, Mendelejew glacier, by the eastern side of Treskelen peninsula, Samarinvagen, Adriabukta, Austre Burgerbukta, Gashamna and Isbjornhamna. The conducted analysis were done for the water layers that lie 1 meter over the bottom. The research was being done was that moment of intensive flows of glacier waters. The measurement were repeated in 2002, moreover almost for the same positions. When the research was being conducted the Hornsund fjord was under the influence of warm waters on the surface by West Spitsbergen current, according the analysis of the data of surface waters taken by NOAA-CIRES Climate Diagnostics Centre. As a result of the analysis conducted some great variability of water temperature and salinity for some bays and profiles has been found. For the given positions almost similar values were found by means of two research series (2000 and 2002). The results show indicate to the variability of water layers lied in the given glacier bays. The rise of temperature of bottom waters both in Isbjornhamna and Brepollen that has been noticed during the period of 20-30 years indicates constant warming. The results of various research as well as the conclusions about the long-term lasting warming of the bottom waters available from literature can provide evidence that during the period of 20-30 years there is a change of intensity of West Spitsbergen current. Thus there is a significant change and conversion of water mass filled Hornsund.

We present the results of species distribution modeling conducted on macrobenthic occurrence data collected between 2002 and 2014 in Arctic fjord – Hornsund. We focus on species from Mollusca and Crustacea taxa. This study investigates the importance of individual environmental factors for benthic species distribution, with a special emphasis on bottom water temperature. It aims to verify the hypothesis that the distribution of species is controlled by low water temperatures in the fjord and that the inner basins of the fjord serve as potential refugia for Arctic species threatened by the climate change-related intensification of warmer water inflows. Our results confirm the importance of bottom water temperature in regulating the presence of benthic fauna in the Hornsund fjord. The distribution of studied species is clearly related to specific water mass – colder (<1°C) or warmer (>1°C); and the preferred temperature regimes seem to be species specific and unrelated to analyzed groups. This study supports the notion that inner basins of the Hornsund fjord are potential refugia for cold water Arctic fauna, while the outer and central basins provide suitable habitats for fauna that prefer warmer waters.

Mniejsze wartości średniego stężenia tlenu stwierdzono w warunkach mniejszych głębokości wody: w pierwszym pionie badawczym (I) – 1,96 g O2·m–3, a w drugim (II) – 2,22 g O2·m–3.

Opis:
The paper examines spatial and seasonal variations in diurnal water temperature dynamics in lowland rivers. Temperature data was obtained from digital temperature loggers located in nine sites across the Mazovian Lowland during the hydrological year 2016. On the basis of measurement data, mean, maximum, and minimum daily ranges were calculated in the monthly timescale, as well as the timing of extreme temperatures during the day. The results indicate that water temperature dynamics of lowland rivers have a clear seasonal pattern, with the highest variations of temperature in May and June and the lowest in January. Statistically significant differences were found in the daily temperature range between groups of the investigated sites; a higher diurnal temperature range was observed in sites draining a smaller catchment area, while larger rivers were generally more thermally stable in the daily timescale. There was also found an effect of anthropopressure on diurnal temperature dynamics in urbanized catchments, mainly due to impoundments and sewage inflows. Maximum water temperature in the studied sites usually occurred in the morning, from 06:00 to 10:00 CEST, while minimum temperature occurred in the late afternoon, from 14:00 to 18:00 CEST. Spatially, the timing of the maximum and minimum water temperatures during the day was similar in all of the investigated sites, with no statistically significant differences. However, cluster analysis indicated that in the summer half of the year the timing of the extreme temperatures was more varied between investigated sites. The results provide new insight into short-term river thermal behaviour and they are valuable in the context of game fisheries due to the significance of daily temperature variations in fish activity and feeding.

Opis:
The main task of this paper is to explain if there is an energy-active sea zone in the vicinity of the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula which controls changes in atmospheric circulation in this area. The analysis made by use of the data comprising information about mean monthly sea surface temperatures (later SST) and SST anomalies in 2 x 2° grids - GEDEX and data about mean monthly air temperatures taken at the Arctowski Station (Meteorological Yearbooks of the Arctowski Station). Common data spanned the period from January 1982 to April 1992. The first stage of this work was to find so called .active grids", i.e. grids of bigger influence of ocean surface on thermic regime of distant areas. In order to do that an analysis of changes in SST in parts of the South Ocean comprising the Bellingshausen Sea, the Drake Strait, the Scotia Sea and the boundary between the Scotia Sea and the Weddell Sea was carried out. The analysis resulted in a conclusion that three grids situated 80oW: 56°,60° and 64°S show the larger relation with the flow of air temperature at the Arctowski Station. There are synchronic and asynchronic correlations between SST anomalies and the air temperature in nominated grids of the Arctowski Station. The results of analysis of synchronic correlations have been presented in table l. Asynchronic correlations are of complicated nature and distributions. Most numerous simple correlations were reported to occur between the temperature at the Arctowski Station and SST Anomalies in grids [80°W, 64°S]. The largest correlations are those with anomalies occurring in January, February and March. They can be observed in the air temperature with 11-13 months delay. The combined correlations are multiple correlations between regression equation of synchronically occurring anomalies (AN) in those grids and the air temperature at the Arctowski Station (ARC) in consecutive months (1, 2, 3, ..., n, n + 1, n + 2); ARC_n = a + b AN[80.56]_n + c AN[80.60]_n + d AN[80.64]_n. Table 2 contains set of multiple correlation coefficients and those which are likely to be significant have been marked. It has been stated that SST anomalies at 800W in March correlate with monthly air temperatures at the end of summer the following year (February and March) at the Arctowski Station and with temperatures of the early and midwinter of the following year (May, June, July). The variation in SST anomalies in March explains 88% - 69% of variance of variation in the air temperature in June and in July of the following year at the Arctowski Station (fig. l). The response of the air temperature to the occurrence of SST anomalies in October at 800W is much faster - from one to five months. Large correlation between the air temperatures at the Arctowski Station and SST anomalies can be observed already in December of the same year and in January, March and April in the following year (fig. 2). The above stated facts lead to conclusion that the distribution of SST does not influence the flow of the air temperature in a continuous way. Future variations in the air temperature are influenced by the states of thermal field of water measured at crucial moments (the end of summer and the end of winter). They are the states, which later on are slowly modified by processes of radiation in-and off flow, wind chilling and dynamic processes active in the ocean (heat advection following the mass advection). Thus a thesis can be stated that the SST anomalies occurring in grids 56°, 600 and 64°S. 800W may serve as predictive values to work out long term prognosis of the air temperature at the Arctowski Station. These prognosis can be divided into "early" prognosis with 2-6 months' advance (equations 1-4) and "distant" prognosis with 11-18 months' advance (equations 5-8). The above mentioned equations explain about 91% to 52% of variations in the mean monthly air temperature at the Arctowski Station. The presented facts indicate that there really is energy-active zone in the Bellingshausen Sea. Chapter 6 in 4 points shows how the hypothetical mechanism works. It can be understood and explained in a similar way as in case of the Labrador Sea and the New Foundland region (Marsz 1997). The analysis of synchronic statistical correlations between the air temperature at the Arctowski Station and the distribution of SST anomalies at 80°W indicates, among others, the presence of the mechanism described in Chapter 6. Such correlations have been analysed and discussed in a detailed way for April (fig. 3, equations 9 and l0) and for July (fig. 4, equation 11).

Opis:
Svalbard archipelago, a high latitude area in a region undergoing rapid climate change, is relatively easily accessible for field research. This makes the fjords of Spitsbergen, its largest island, some of the best studied Arctic coastal areas. This paper aims at answering the question of how climatically diverse the fjords are, and how representative they are for the expected future Arctic diminishing range of seasonal sea-ice. This study uses a meteorological reanalysis, sea surface temperature climatology, and the results of a recent one-year meteorological campaign in Spitsbergen to determine the seasonal differences between different Spitsbergen fjords, as well as the sea water temperature and ice ranges around Svalbard in recent years. The results show that Spitsbergen fjords have diverse seasonal patterns of air temperature due to differences in the SST of the adjacent ocean, and different cloudiness. The sea water temperatures and ice concentrations around Svalbard in recent years are similar to what is expected most of the Arctic coastal areas in the second half of this century. This makes Spitsbergen a unique field study model of the conditions expected in future warmer High Arctic.

Przeanalizowano ponadto aspekty ekologiczne związane z zastąpieniem tradycyjnych paliw energią promieniowania słonecznego, określając stopień ograniczenia emisji gazów cieplarnianych.
The paper presents the analysis of theoretical potential as regards employing solar collectors to heat up water used in cattle and swine breeding in small and large commodity farms. Computations have been carried out for a specific set of solar collectors working between June and November. Completed calculations allow to find to what extent the heat derived from solar collectors is capable of covering power needs for heating up water used in animal production. Moreover, the researchers have analysed ecological aspects involved in replacement of conventional fuels with solar radiation energy, determining the extent of greenhouse gas emission reduction.

The objective of the paper is the analysis of changes in the thermal conditions of the Prosna River in central Poland (station Bogusław) over the last 50 years (1965–2014). Based on daily temperature measurements performed by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute, it was determined that the mean annual water temperature in the analysed river considerably increased by an average of 0.27°C∙decade–1. In monthly distribution, the highest increase was recorded in April. It amounted to 0.46°C∙decade–1. Changes in water temperature were strongly dependent on the transformation of climatic conditions. An increase in the annual air temperature in the analogical multiannual for station Kalisz (about 20 km from the research site) amounted to 0.3°C∙decade–1. Such evident changes in the thermal regime of the Prosna Regime have and will have an effect on the functioning of the entire ecosystem. It is clearly visible among others in the occurrence of ice phenomena the persistence of which decreased by 5.6 day∙decade–1.

Statistical relationships between the quantum yield of photosynthesis and selected environmental factors in the ocean have been studied. The underwater irradiance, nutrient content, water temperature and water trophicity (i.e. the surface concentration of chlorophyll Ca(0)) have been considered, utilizing a large empirical data base. On the basis of these relationships, a mathematical model of the quantum yield was worked out in which the quantum yield Φ is expressed as a product of the theoretical maximum quantum yield ΦMAX = 0.125 atomC quanta−1 and six dimensionless factors. Each of these factors fi appears to be, to a sufficiently good approximation, dependent on one or two environmental factors and optical depth at most. The model makes it possible to determine the quantum yield from known values of these environmental factors. Empirical verification of the model yielded a positive result – the statistical error of the approximate values of the quantum yield Φ is 42%.

Although PWR reactors make up the large majority of the world's nuclear power plants, BWR reactors also have a share in this industry. It is difficult to find data on the performance of a BWR power plant in off-design and variable load conditions in the literature. Therefore, the paper presents how cooling water temperature affects the efficiency and power output of a BWR unit. The qualitative effect of changes and the trend related to the effect of cooling water temperature on the performance of the power plant are known, but the quantitative effect has to be determined for specific power units. Depending on the location of the nuclear power plant, various temperatures of cooling water for use in condensers and thus various operating conditions of the cooling system can be achieved. To analyze how cooling water temperature affects the performance of the power unit, a model of a BWR power plant was developed using the Ebsilon software. The model was based on data provided in [1] concerning LaSalle County Nuclear Generating Station. Calculations showed that within the examined range of cooling water temperatures at the condenser inlet between 10 and 28oC the gross power output of the unit decreases by 91.405 MW and the gross efficiency drops by 2.773 percentage points.

The paper discusses the current prognoses of aquaculture development worldwide putting an emphasis on its effect on the environment and the issue of the protection of water reservoirs in different countries. Water consumption in diversified aquaculture systems is presented herein as well as the characteristics of the mechanical and biological water treatment methods in fish farms, with particular attention paid to the recirculating water systems. New aquaculture technologies using post-production waters are presented. The paper provides a discussion on the contribution of aquaculture to the global greenhouse gas emissions and the means of limiting this emission. The effect of climate change on aquatic ecosystems is presented in the context of the changes of the aquaculture production profile. The paper includes a brief presentation of the methods of mitigating the changes with respect to contamination of aquatic ecosystems as well as climate change. Reducing the water footprint can be achieved through selective breeding, species diversification and implementation of more technologically advanced aquaculture systems such as: integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, aquaponics and recirculation systems in aquaculture. The need for certification of fish farms with water recirculation systems is justified in the paper. The issues addressed herein are summarised and the main areas for extending the research promoting preservation of aquatic ecosystems in aquaculture are presented.

The paper discusses changes of the mean monthly sea surface temperature on the Russian Arctic seas in the years 1979-2016. It was found that during the period under investigation there was a slow increase in water temperature. However, only in the Barents Sea it was statistically significant in all months of the year, and in the SW part of the Kara and western Chukchi seas from June to December. In the analyzed 38 years the highest rise in surface water temperature was recorded in the East Siberian Sea (+0.57°C/decade in August and +0.44°C/decade in September) and in the SW Kara Sea in July (+0.53°C/decade). Still on all these seas, except for the Barents Sea, until June inclusive, the water temperature was lower than its freezing temperature for a particular salinity specific for the sea. At the latest, freezing temperatures reached the waters of the Barents Sea, where in the last decade (2006-2015) at the approach to the north entrance of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) rarely water temperature has fallen below the freezing point. At the same time, the Chukchi Sea waters reached freezing temperatures in December. This means that vessels sailing through the NSR in November will have the chance to pass it through "ice free" water or in thin, young ice, which for modern ships is not a major threat.

Nodularia spumigena forms extensive summer blooms in the Baltic Sea. The occurrence of the blooms is determined by water temperature, light intensity and nutrient concentration; levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in particular are critical. The time of the seasonal maximum and intensity of the Nodularia bloom in the Gulf of Gdańsk vary significantly from year to year. In 2001 a rapid and massive proliferation of N. spumigena was observed in late June – early July. The concentration of nodularin in water ranged from 90 to 18 135 μg dm−3 and in lyophilised phytoplankton samples from 3000 to 3520 μg g−1 d.w. (dry weight). Such a high concentration of toxin in the recreational waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk constitutes a health risk for users of bathing areas. In 2002, the N. spumigena bloom was less dense, but lasted longer, with a maximum in late July – early August. In 2002 the concentration of nodularin did not exceed 12.6 μg dm−3 in water and 919 μg g−1 d.w. in lyophilised phytoplankton samples. Other cyanobacterial toxins – microcystins and anatoxin-a – were also detected in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk.

Bacterial production and the accompanying environmental factors were measured in the water columns of two Arctic fjords during the cruise in July and August 2013. Water samples were collected at six stations located in the central part of Hornsund and Kongsfjorden. In Hornsund, where average water temperatures were 1.25-fold lower than in Kongsfjorden, the bacterial production was twice as high (0.116 ± 0.102 vs 0.05 ± 0.03 mg C m−3 h−1). Statistical analysis indicated that chlorophyll a concentration itself was not a significant factor that affected bacterial production, in contrast to its decomposition product, pheophytin, originating from senescent algal cells or herbivorous activity of zooplankton. Single and multiple regression analysis revealed that water temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and pheophytin concentration were the main factors affecting bacterial production in both fjords.

Cercopagis pengoi, a species native to the Ponto-Caspian area, was recorded for the first time in the Baltic Sea in the Gulf of Riga and in the open Gulf of Finland in 1992. Sampling in the shallow coastal area of the western part of the Gulf of Gdańsk at weekly intervals between April 1999 and April 2000 revealed the presence of C. pengoi in the zooplankton community. The species was recorded twice, at densities of 1369 indiv. m−3 on 30 July 1999 and 421 indiv. m−3 on 5 August 1999, when the water temperature was at its maximum, in excess of 21.7◦C and 23.9◦C respectively. C. pengoi had never been recorded in the Gulf of Gdańsk prior to 1999.

Opis:
Climate model results for the Baltic Sea region from an ensemble of eight simulations using the Rossby Centre Atmosphere model version 3 (RCA3) driven with lateral boundary data from global climate models (GCMs) are compared with results from a downscaled ERA40 simulation and gridded observations from 1980 –2006. The results showed that data from RCA3 scenario simulations should not be used as forcing for Baltic Sea models in climate change impact studies because biases of the control climate significantly affect the simulated changes of future projections. For instance, biases of the sea ice cover in RCA3 in the present climate affect the sensitivity of the model’s response to changing climate due to the ice-albedo feedback. From the large ensemble of available RCA3 scenario simulations two GCMs with good performance in downscaling experiments during the control period 1980–2006 were selected. In this study, only the quality of atmospheric surface fields over the Baltic Sea was chosen as a selection criterion. For the greenhouse gas emission scenario A1B two transient simulations for 1961 –2100 driven by these two GCMs were performed using the regional, fully coupled atmosphere-ice-ocean model RCAO. It was shown that RCAO has the potential to improve the results in downscaling experiments driven by GCMs considerably, because sea surface temperatures and sea ice concentrations are calculated more realistically with RCAO than when RCA3 has been forced with surface boundary data from GCMs. For instance, the seasonal 2 m air temperature cycle is closer to observations in RCAO than in RCA3 downscaling simulations. However, the parameterizations of air-sea fluxes in RCAO need to be improved.

Opis:
Miedwie Lake is the biggest post-glacial lake of the West-Pomeranian Voievodship. At the same time it is the fifth of the largest lakes in Poland. As regards the geographical situation, Miedwie Lake is situated centrally between three big agglomerations i.e. Szczecin, Stargard Szczecinski and Pyrzyce (Fig. 1). The lake lies on the territory of three municipalities: Pyrzyce and Warnice in the District of Pyrzyce as well as Stargard Szczecinski in the District of Stargard (Rozmiarek 1983, Szyper 1990). At the moment, the reservoir is characterised with the regular, prolonged shape resembling an ellipse. Banks are shallow, regular and sometime very wet. The lake has the belt of the nearshore reaching locally tens metres far from the lake bank, what is the reason, together with the fact that the wind blows always here, that it is convenient for practising the various kinds of water sports. The lake area amounts to 3 527 ha; maximal depth – 43.8 m; average depth – 19.3 m; water capacity – 681.7 mln m3; shore-line length – 38.8 km; water level datum 14.1 m above sea level; maximal width 3.16 km; maximal length 16.2 km. The lake’s bottom is the lowest situated area on the territory of Poland.

The runoff coefficient is one of the fundamental hydrological characteristics of a catchment. It indicates a share of the precipitation water that runs off from the catchment. The results of the runoff coefficient calculation based on measurements carried out continuously in the Cerhovický Stream catchment over a considerable period of time, i.e. from 1988 up to 2006 are presented. The precipitation and runoff data in the catchment were used. Mean value of the runoff coefficient and the runoff coefficients for the agricultural and forest parts of the catchment are presented. The total mean runoff coefficient for the Cerhovický Stream is 0.19 with the standard deviation of 0.06. Mean runoff coefficient for the forest part is 0.13 and for the agricultural part - 0.24. Differences between the years with a higher and a lower precipitation were followed as well. We also statistically evaluated possible hydrological changes caused by the construction of the highway and the market centre. For another possible explanation of quite high standard deviation of the mean annual runoff coefficient we followed the monthly runoff coefficient dependence on water temperature and of ground water table depth.
Współczynnik spływu jest jedną z podstawowych cech hydrologicznych zlewni. Określa on tę część wód opadowych, która odpływa ze zlewni. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń współczynnika spływu na podstawie ciągłych i długotrwałych (1988-2006) pomiarów opadu i spływu, prowadzonych w zlewni strumienia Cerhovickiego.

Opis:
Wetland is an important natural source of methane (CH4) generated under the actions of methanogens in the anaerobic environment. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to quantify the response of methane emissions to water levels by simulating three water levels (10, 20, and 40 cm) in constructed wetlands and the methane was determined by the static chamber-gas chromatograph technique. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the emissions of CH4 were positively correlated with water temperature and air temperature while they were negatively correlated with air humidity. The water levels simulation experiment showed that the emission of CH4 was the highest when the water level was 20 cm and the CH4 concentrations of the water-air interface had different patterns at various water levels in the daytime. In conclusion, water level and temperature should be considered when accounting for greenhouse gas emissions in constructed wetlands as they both have important influences on CH4 emission.

Exergy analysis of low temperature geothermal heat plant with compressor and absorption heat pump was carried out. In these two concepts heat pumps are using geothermal water at 19.5°C with spontaneous outflow 24 m3/h as a heat source. The research compares exergy efficiency and exergy destruction of considered systems and its components as well. For the purpose of analysis, the heating system was divided into five components: geothermal heat exchanger, heat pump, heat distribution, heat exchanger and electricity production and transportation. For considered systems the primary exergy consumption from renewable and non-renewable sources was estimated. The analysis was carried out for heat network temperature at 50/40°C, and the quality regulation was assumed. The results of exergy analysis of the system with electrical and absorption heat pump show that exergy destruction during the whole heating season is lower for the system with electrical heat pump. The exergy efficiencies of total system are 12.8% and 11.2% for the system with electrical heat pump and absorption heat pump, respectively.

Introduction. Legionella longbeachae, a causative agent of Legionnaire’s disease, has often been associated with potting soil and gardening, a feature quite distinct from other Legionella species. The precise transmission mechanism is still unknown, although due to the ecological coherence of the soil and water there is a potential risk of infection by contaminated stagnant water in the garden. Objective. The aim of the study was to explore the ability of L. longbeachae to survive in stagnant tap water usually used for watering in gardens. The influence of different factors (temperature, pH and NaCl concentration) on L. longbeachae survival in stagnant tap water was also tested. Results. The result showed that L. longbeachae is viable in stagnant tap water over 100 days at 4 °C and 25 °C. The survival of L. longbeachae exposed to different pH and NaCl concentration suggests resistance to low pH values (pH2 and pH5) and all tested NaCl concentrations at temperatures lower than 25 °C. The ability of L. longbeachae to persist in stagnant tap water should be taken seriously in the risk assessments as a possible hidden reservoir of infection.

The data were gathered not only from our measurements of thermal waters occurring in the Polish Carpathians, but also from the attained published references in the world. The graphical relations between concentrations of the uranium and radium isotopes in thermal waters and their parameters such as temperature and mineralization were drawn up and discussed. The relation between the contents of 226Ra and 228Ra for the investigated waters was also analysed. The relations show that the influence of temperature on the mineralization and radioactive elements in thermal waters is complicated.

Opis:
The difficulties of access and detailed measurements of land surface temperature (LST) and water surface temperature (WST) especially in wetlands made the use of remote sensing data as one of the sources and techniques to estimate many climate elements including surface temperature and surface emissivity (ɛ). This study aims to estimate the surface temperature of the wetland of Lake Oubeira located in northeastern Algeria and their spatiotemporal evolution in both land and water. Landsat OLI-TIRS images in two dates (April and September 2016) obtained from the USGS have been used in this work, and forms the basis of a series of operations to obtain the final LST: development of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), conversion of the digital number (DN) of the thermal infrared band (TIR) into spectral radiance as well as the calculation of the effective luminosity temperature of the sensor from the spectral radiation and surface emissivity (ɛ). The results show that the LST varies in space and time (from 16 to 31°C in April and from 24 to 41°C in September). This implies that the absorption of the equilibrium temperature at land cover depends on the optical properties of the surface, which are essentially determined by its water content, colour and morphology. At the same time, the water surface is the lowest land cover temperature, which also has a spatial variation (from 19 to 25°C in April and from 26 to 34.5°C in September) induced by atmospheric temperature, wind direction and speed and the depth of the lake.

In the present study, the influence of bioaugmentation strategy on the co-treatment of 13% v/v reject water and municipal wastewater at a decreasing temperature was evaluated. The experiment was performed in two identical laboratory sequencing batch reactors with the active volume of 8 L. Each one was operated using a 12-hour cycle at sludge retention time of 3 d. The SBR A was bioaugmented with a mixture of wild-living bacteria and Archaea in a dose 0.25 ml. In turn, the comparative reactor (SBR B) was non-bioaugmented, the Archaea product was replaced with an equal volume of dechlorinated tap water. The experiment was divided into 3 phases, each with a different temperature range (20, 15 and 10°C). The temperature reduction did not adversely affect the process performance in the bioaugmented and non-bioaugmented system. Significant removal efficiencies were achieved in both SBRs. The major differences were observed for the COD content in the bioaugmented SBR at a temperature of 10°C. In this case, statistically lower concentrations in the effluent were observed in the bioaugmented system than in the non-bioaugmented one. Additionally, at a temperature of 10°C, an improved process performance was observed in the Archaea presence, but the differences were of no statistical significance.

Opis:
The paper presents a research hypothesis assumed that the air temperature affects the amount of the water consumption per capita for household purposes (indoor water use). Investigations were conducted based on daily water meter readings of several rural households located in Mszana Górna and Włostowice (Southern Poland). Owing to the double water consumption metering, it was possible to determine the daily water consumption in households, separately for household purposes and for additional purposes. In the performed analysis, the correlation between the average daily air temperature and daily water consumption per capita was tested. For this purpose, correlation coefficients were determined and a 95% confidence interval was assumed. The obtained results showed lack of a clear dependence between the tested variables. Depending on the household, correlation coefficients indicate the existence of a correlation from slight, by weak to moderate. In addition, it was tested that the growth of the air temperature by 1°C caused an increase of the water consumption per capita in the range of 0.14 dm3•d-1•C-1•°C-1 and 1.17 dm3•d-1•C-1•°C-1 (Mszana Górna) and 0.41 dm3•d-1•C-1•°C-1 and 1.78 dm3•d-1•C-1•°C-1 (Włostowice). It can be concluded that often rapid growth of the water consumption in households in spring and summer season and the term of “water consumption per capita” used in this case, primarily concern greater water demand for additional purposes, not for residents’ household purposes.

One of the rational ways of energy saving is to use the heat of wastewater from energy companies for open ground heating and cultivation crops. The most significant sources of heat are thermal and nuclear power plants that produce low-thermal waters of 28-35°C. Heating of the ground with the use of circulating warm water allows to increase temperature at all points of the soil profile. The maximum thermal effect from heating ground is observed at the depth of pipe heaters (7.3- 11.1°C). Ground heating allows to extend the growing season for crops by 3-4 weeks, which can expedite harvesting and thus maximise the harvest. In natural moisture conditions, ground heating does not lead to significant reduction of moisture reserves in the active layer throughout the growing period. There is a redistribution of moisture in a soil profile. It decreases in the zone of pipe heaters and redistributes toward the top. The formation of the nutrient regime changes, the content of mobile phosphorus and potassium, and nitrate nitrogen increases, whereas the content of ammonia nitrogen is reduced. Ground heating is a new special heat reclamation technique. It allows not only to control temperature of the agricultural crop environment, but also to dissipate heat in the ground, and promote the utilisation of waste heat and the stabilisation of the environment.

The waste warm waters from power plants, owing to their temperature regime (25–38°C) and the volumes of discharge, allow for their use for heating of open ground areas in agriculture. Underground heating by such water is a new, special heat and irrigation method which enables not only purposeful regulation of temperature conditions of the crop growing environment, but also dissipates heat in the soil, thus cooling the water for its reuse. This makes it possible to reduce the thermal pollution of water sources.

Thermohaline structure in the Gulf of Riga (GoR) was investigated by a multiplatform measurement campaign in summer 2015. Stratification of the water column was mainly controlled by the temperature while salinity had only a minor contribution. Buoyant salinity maxima with variable strength were observed in the intermediate layer of the Gulf of Riga. The salinity maxima were likely formed by a simultaneous upwelling—downwelling event at the two opposite sides of the Irbe strait. The inflowing salty water did not reach the deeper (> 35 m) parts of the gulf and, therefore, the near-bottom layer of the gulf remained isolated throughout the summer. Thus, the lateral water exchange regime in the near bottom layer of the Gulf of Riga is more complicated than it was thought previously. We suggest that the occurrence of this type of water exchange resulting in a buoyant inflow and lack of lateral transport into the near-bottom layers might contribute to the rapid seasonal oxygen decline in the Gulf of Riga

In this study, the effect of bioaugmentation on the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) performance while treating municipal wastewater and reject water under various temperature conditions was examined. Two lab-scale SBRs, each with the active volume of 8 L were used to perform this research. For bioaugmentation, a mixture of wildliving Bacteria and Archaea in a dose 0.25 mL was added to SBR A, while SBR B was a control one. Both reactors were fed with a mixture of wastewater and 13% v/v reject water. During the experiment, 5 phases with different temperature range were distinguished, each one lasted 14 d. The temperatures were investigated in 5°C increments, i.e. 20, 25, 30, 25 and 20°C. The obtained results indicated that in the bioaugmented reactor (SBR A), lower concentrations of NH4+–N, TSS, NO2-–N in effluent were observed as compared to control (SBR B). While for NH4+–N, regardless the temperature, the observed differences were statistically significant. Importantly, in both SBRs, the process was carried out in a stable way.

This study investigated the temporal variability in the basic physical properties of deep and intermediate waters in the West Spitsbergen Current region at 76°30’N latitude from 1997 to 2016. Emphasis was placed on quantifying the changes in temperature and salinity and determining the potential drivers of these changes. Hydrographic data were obtained during annual summer cruises aboard the r/v Oceania in the Nordic Seas. The increase in the water temperature, which was especially strong in the western part of the investigated section, was associated with considerable changes in the water layers salinity. The temperature and salinity of the intermediate water increased much faster (0.021°C yr−1 and 0.0022 yr−1, respectively) than those of the deep water (0.009°C yr−1 and 0.0004 yr−1, respectively). The warming rate in the upper 2000 m was also higher than the mean warming rate of the global ocean. The source of the deep water temperature and salinity increases was the deep water inflow from the Arctic Ocean into the Greenland Sea. In contrast, the increase in these properties in the intermediate water was associated with the advection of warmer and more saline Atlantic Water from the North Atlantic to the Nordic Seas.

The objectives of the research were to: fulfil the preliminary assessment of the sensitivity of the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant and denitrification and decomposition models to variations of climate variables based on the existing soil database; validate the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant and denitrification and decomposition modelled outcomes against measured records for soil temperature and water content. The statistical analyses were conducted by the sensitivity analysis, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients and root mean square error using measured and modelled variables during three growing seasons. Results of sensitivity analysis demonstrated that: soil temperatures predicted by the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant model showed a more reliable sensitivity to the variations of input air temperatures; soil water content predicted by the denitrification and decomposition model had a better reliability in the sensitivity to daily precipitation changes. The root mean square errors and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients demonstrated that: the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant model had a better efficiency in predicting seasonal dynamics of soil temperatures than the denitrification and decomposition model; and among two studied models, the denitrification and decomposition model showed a better capability in predicting the seasonal dynamics of soil water content.

Article shows and discusses the results of research concerning influence of chosen technological characteristics of the coagulation process on the efficiency of aluminum coagulants: sulfate (VI) aluminum and polyaluminum chloride (Flokor 1,2A) and also iron coagulant: sulfate (VI) iron (III): PIX-112, in the removal of underground water pollution. The analysis of results showed that the efficiency of coagulant in underground water pollution removal increases along with the increase of dose tested coagulants, with the increase of water temperature and with flocculation process prolongation. Polyaluminum chloride Flokor 1,2A proved to be the most efficient. Sulfate (VI) iron (III) – PIX-112 turned out to be the least efficient one.

Opis:
Changes in the basic physical properties of selected areas of the Baltic Proper were analysed on the basis of the results of a 12-year series of high-resolution measurements collected during cruises of r/v ‘Oceania’. The high-resolution CTD sections covered three main basins: the Bornholm Basin, Słupsk Furrow and Gdańsk Basin. Positive temperature trends of 0.11 and 0.16◦C year−1 were observed in the surface and deep layers respectively. The salinity trend was also positive. The rise in the air temperature has probably caused the increase in surface water temperature, while advection has been of greater significance in the deep layer. The increase in salinity coincides with the more frequent occurrence of small and medium-size inflows through the Danish Straits, even though large inflows are evidently less frequent than used to be the case. The seasonal variability of temperature in the water column was analysed. The phase shift in the seasonal evolution with depth is described. The maximum temperature shift in the waters investigated varies from 32 to 38 days.

The paper presents the results of research on the mass and the energy potential of malting barley straw of the "Klas" variety. The research was designated on a 100 ha plantation located in Pojezierze Iławsko-Sztumskie region. Using the Yara N-Sensor processor, precise application of mineral fertilizers according to determined fertilization demand allowed increasing the grain yield by 26% and the straw biomass yield by 74% compared to the control sample. The resulting increase in biomass obtained in the form of straw impacts its possible partial use for energy purposes without negative effects on the environment. The tested energy value of malting barley straw as a function of moisture content allowed a conclusion that between 10 and 25% of water content the energy value drops from 13.1 to 7.4 GJ·t-1 . For an average water content of 15%, this yields an energy potential unit of 23.76 GJ·ha-1 . Following observations of the combustion process, it was concluded that barley straw cannot be used as a source of biomass for the largescale power production since its ash melts at below 800ºC.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań potencjału masy i energii słomy jęczmienia browarnego odmiany ”Klas” wyznaczonego na plantacji 100 ha zlokalizowanej na Pojezierzu Iławsko-Sztumskim. Precyzyjne aplikowanie nawozów mineralnych wg ustalonych potrzeb nawozowych przy pomocy procesora Yara N- Sensor, umożliwiło zwiększenie plonu ziarna o 26% i biomasy słomy o 74% w porównaniu do próby kontrolnej.

Relationships between the zooplankton community andv arious environmental factors (salinity, temperature, sampling depth and bottom depth) were established in the European Arctic Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) using multivariate statistics. Three main zooplankton communities were identified: an Atlantic Shallow Community (AtSC), an Arctic Shallow Community (ArSC) anda Deep Water Community (DWC). All species belonging to AtSC andArSC were pooledandtheir relative abundances in the total zooplankton calculated with respect to a particular layer (surface, midan dd eep strata), regions (the Barents Sea, Fram Strait andt he waters off northern Svalbard), years (1999 or 2003) and seasons (spring or autumn). Mapping of the proportions of Arctic andA tlantic species ledto the conclusion that zooplankton from the MIZs do not exactly follow complementary water masses, although the general pattern of AtSC and ArSC dominance accords with the physical oceanography of the study area (AtW and ArW respectively). The mid layer proved to be a better predictor of mesozooplankton distribution than the unstable conditions near the surface.

Peat degradation is accompanied by the subsidence of peat surface due to the loss of organic matter. Long-term observations carried out in the Experimental Station of Reclamation and Grassland Farming in Biebrza (the Kuwasy peatland) showed that the subsidence might vary from 0.7 to 1.5 cm annually. Disappearance of that amount of organic matter is followed by the transport of large loads of dissolved organic carbon to ground and then to surface waters through which it is removed from the object in question. This work was aimed at studying the effect of temperature and ground water table depth on observed (both spatial and temporal) differentiation of organic carbon concentration in ground waters of peatlands which had been transformed by various human activity and natural processes. The study was carried out in peats of the Biebrza Valley in three objects of distinctly different water and soil properties. The study revealed different concentration of organic carbon in ground water of used peatlands as compared with that in unused peatlands and a relationship between the intensity of dissolved organic carbon release from peat and hydrothermal conditions.

Recently, boiler plants are have been the subject of intensive investigations in the context of energy-saving technologies and management for power saving and reduction of emissions. Modern boiler design offers several benefits with this respect. In the past, improper design of boilers has been the cause of explosions which led to the loss of life and property. Modern designs attempt to avoid such mishaps. This paper presents a novel Self-Adaptive Whale Optimization Algorithm (SAWOA) for improving the learning characteristic of the neural network, the major intention being to model the characteristics of the boiler plant and so to effectively predict the boiler behaviour. The performance analysis of the introduced model has been carried out using the three test cases with consideration of several parameters. In the experimental analysis, the introduced technique is compared with the existing ones, based on such approaches as Neural Model (NM), Firefly (FF-NM), Adaptive Firefly NM (AFF-NM), and Whale Optimization Algorithm-NM (WOANM). In this comparison, the error, i.e. the difference between the actual and the predicted value, was used, and the results revealed that the error is lower for the introduced technique under different experimental scenarios. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance level of SAWOA is by 18% better than those of NM, FF-NM, and AFF-NM, and by 3.74% better than that of WOA-NM. This confirms the quality of performance of the proposed approach regarding boiler plants.

Opis:
Five years (1998, 2000–2003) of summer records of temperature, nutrients and dissolved oxygen concentrations in the upper 400 m of the water column of the northern Gulf of Aqaba were employed to produce a simple statistical model of the relationship between temperature versus nitrate, phosphate, silicate andd issolved oxygen concentrations. Temperature profiles in the upper 400 m during summer revealeda clear thermocline in the upper 200 m. This was reflected in nutrient ando xygen concentrations as nitrate, phosphate, and silicate increasedfr om the surface to deep water while dissolved oxygen decreased. The best fit relationship between temperature versus nitrate andphosphate was inverse linear and the best fit correlation between temperature versus silicate andd issolvedo xygen was fractional. The observedn utrient concentrations were shaped by a combination of the hydrodynamics and biological factors. Deep winter mixing and high nutrient concentrations dominate during winter. Shortly after the water stratifies in spring, the nutrients are drawn down by phytoplankton during the spring bloom and remain low throughout the rest of the year. The regression equations presented here will be useful in estimating nutrient concentrations from temperature records as long as the annual natural cycle is the main driver of nutrient concentrations and external inputs are insignificant. Deviations from these relationships in the future could provide insight into modifications in the nutrient concentrations probably resulting from new nutrient sources, such as anthropogenic inputs.

Opis:
An impact of surface spray and pressing temperature on the properties of high density fibreboards. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of chosen process parameters: water spray amount and 3rd press heating section temperature on the mechanical, physical properties of ultrathin (2.5 mm) industrial high-density fibreboards (HDF) produced with 5% of recovered HDF (rHDF) addition. Boards were produced with 0 ml/m2 – V0, 8 ml/m2 – V8, 16 ml/m2 – V16 and 32 ml/m2 – V32 of surface water spray addition on top and bottom side in industrial hot continuous press with 3rd heating section temperature setups: 145oC (V45), 160oC (V60) and 175oC (V75). After variants examination with different surface water spray amount it was found, that there is roughly linear positive correlation for MOR increase for up to 10% comparing V0 to V32 and for surface roughness decrease for up to 31%. Surface water spray improved IB for up to 21% while WA decreased for up to 9% for V8 comparing to HDF produced without surface water spray addition. According to 3rd press heating section temperature influence – MOR and MOE has increased while other mechanical properties worsen with pressing temperature increase – drop in IB and SS.
W drugiej części zastosowano zmienne temperatury 3-ciej sekcji grzewczej przemysłowej prasy ciągłego działania, tj.: 145oC, 160oC i 175oC.

Opis:
A medium-sized inflow (about 200 km3 according to IOW data, - personal communication) of saline water into the southern Baltic Sea occurred during January 2003. Unlike any previously observed inflow, this one brought very cold water, of temperatures around 1-2oC and less. Since the temperature of the deep water in the southern Baltic before the inflow was exceptionally high (11-12oC), the inflowing waters produced dramatic changes and a steep temperature gradient. The movement of the inflowing waters through the deep basins and channels of the Baltic Sea from the Arkona Basin to the Gdańsk Deep during next 4-8 months is described. Frequent mesoscale structures and intensive mixing followed the eastward transport of the inflow water, particularly in the Bornholm Deep and Słupsk Furrow. The present paper is based on data collected during 6 cruises r/v "Oceania" between December 2002 and August 2003. The last cruise in August took place in order to assess the long-term consequences of the inflow.

Opis:
The north-eastern part of Nidziańska Basin, near Staszów, boasts a large grouping of small but relatively deep lakes of karst origin. In 2010, 26 of them underwent regular measurements of the temperature of their surface layer of water. The results show that although the basins are situated close to each other and the area has similar characteristics, the temperature differs significantly. The thermal differences reach 11.6ºC. The warmest lakes appear to be Lake Łajba, Duży Staw, Lakes Torfowe I and Torfowe II. However, the coldest surface water is in lakes Piąty Staw, a small unnamed lake located near Lake Ciemne and an unnamed lake sandwiched between Lake Szyja and Lake Jasne. The fact that the temperature of the water goes up results directly from solar radiation, which was the strongest in the case of Lake Łajba, located in an open area. However, the coldest basins were located in the central parts of the lakes of the floating peat islands. Those biogenic islands are perfect “insulators”, protecting the water from thermal radiation. Moreover, the lakes which are fed with soligenous water supplies, tend to have a lower temperature.

Opis:
Soil enzyme activity indicates potential of the soil to sustain biochemical processes, which are essential for the maintenance of soil fertility. Dehydrogenase activity reflects total oxidative activity of soil microflora, catalase activity is responsible for the decomposition of H2O2. Redox potential (Eh) is an index of the soil aeration status. Effects of soil temperature and water content on Eh, soil dehydrogenase activity and catalasc activity in an Eutric Histosol at three different fields planted with Papulus nigra, Salix amencana, and grasses (with Alopecurits pratensis, Phalaris arundinacea, Festuca pratensis is as dominating species) were studied at the depths of 10, 30, 50, 70 cm. Enzyme activity and redox potential showed seasonal fluctuations following natural changes of soil water content and temperature. Dehydrogenase activity was significantly correlated with soil temperature and water content (r=0.37** and r=0.27***, respectively). Redox potential showed a significant correlation with soil water content (r=-0.32*** ). Catalase activity did not exhibit any correlation with the tested parameters. The type of plantation influenced enzyme activities; tree cover was characterised by higher dehydrogenase and catalase activities than meadow soils.

Opis:
A project was developed concerning the operational system of surveillance and the recording of episodic events in the Baltic Sea. In situ information was to be combined with multi-sensory satellite imagery to determine the extent of algal blooms, to track their evolution and that of rapid environmental events like hydrological fronts. The main element of the system was an autonomous Ferry Box module on a ferry operating between Gdynia and Karlskrona, automatically measuring temperature, salinity and chlorophyll a fluorescence. At pre-selected locations, discrete water samples were collected, which were subsequently analysed for their phytoplankton content, and algal hepato- and neurotoxins; they were also used in toxicity tests with Artemia franciscana.

Opis:
From October 2002 until March 2003 surprisingly warm, oxygenated waters were frequently encountered in the Baltic Sea in the area between the Bornholm and Fårö Deeps from the halocline down to the bottom. Owing to their ventilation effect in the stagnating deep waters, their occasional observations have partly been incorrectly attributed to the inflow events of October 2002 or January 2003. The emergence of some of these waters can be traced back to the exceptional summer weather conditions in August and September 2002 in central Europe. The warm waters played a remarkable renewal pacemaker role for the subsequent important winter inflow of January 2003. The evolution of this summer inflow is described and possible causes are discussed.

Opis:
In order to evaluate the ability of the crop water stress index to estimate grain yield and water productivity of maize and black gram in the climatic conditions of Urmia (Iran), research was conducted under the conditions of single-row drip irrigation. This study was conducted in a randomized complete block design with four irrigation levels including 50 (I1), 75 (I2), 100 (I3) and 125 (I4) percent of the water requirements of the plants with three replications. The mean crop water stress index values for the I1, I2 and I3 treatments were 0.53, 0.44, and 0.28, respectively during the growth period of maize, and 0.37, 0.23, and 0.15 for black gram, respectively. In the present study, the correlation between the crop water stress index and the grain yield and also the water productivity of maize and black gram was high. According to the results, the highest grain yield for maize and black gram was obtained at crop water stress index values of 0.28 and 0.15, respectively. Therefore, these values are recommended for the irrigation scheduling of the plants. It should be noted that the maximum water productivity index for maize and black gram was obtained at crop water stress index values of 0.44 (I2) and 0.37 (I1), respectively, which are the values recommended for irrigation scheduling under restricted access to water.
