Opis:
A recent study has shown increased warming in the fjords of west Spitsbergen. Their location is critical, as they are situated along the main northward pathway of Atlantic Water (AW) which is a great source of heat to the Arctic Ocean and the fjords. In the light of ongoing warming, we aim to discuss differences between the fjords under northward transformation of oceanic waters. We compared summer hydrographic conditions in two fjords located in two opposite ends of west Spistbergen: Hornsund in the south and Kongsfjorden in the north. The study is based on high resolution CTD measurements collected during Arctic cruises between 2001 and 2015. The emphasis was put not only on differences in water temperature, salinity and water masses but also the freshwater content (FWC), AW transport and heat delivery to the fjords. In general, the water in Kongsfjorden is on average 18C warmer and its salinity is higher by 0.5 compared to Hornsund. It is also characterized by two times greater transport of AW and heat delivery to the fjord. On the other hand, Hornsund reveals two times higher FWC. Both fjords undergo a gradual warming due to an increased presence of Atlantic origin waters. The ongoing warming is accompanied by an increase in variability of temperature and salinity dependent on the domination of the Sørkapp Current (SC) or the West Spitsbergen Current (WSC) on the West Spitsbergen Shelf (WSS). Nonetheless, Hornsund remains more Arctic-type fjord compared to Kongsfjorden, due to stronger blocking by SC.

Opis:
Between May and October of 2003, mineral composition of surface (0.5 m deep) and bottom (5.0 meters) waters, at measurement stations in north-western and south-eastern parts of Great Lagoon (Szczecin Lagoon), have been studied. Total concentrations of ionic macrocomponents: Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, HCO3 - , SO4 2- have been determined. Differentiation of ionic composition and changing level of concentrations of ionic macrocomponents in waters, depending on location of measurement station, depth of water sample collection and time of examination, have been proved. Bottom waters in south-eastern part of Great Lagoon had highest salinity level, whereas surface waters in the same location had lowest degree of salinity. Taking into consideration relatively small number of measurements, authors of present paper regard outlined investigations as diagnostic and obtained conclusions as preliminary ones. Towards substantial variability in ionic composition and magnitudes of concentrations, it is practically impossible to forecast and define values of concentrations of individual ionic components and general salinity degrees, basing on chlorides concentrations, what was often pursued, until now.
W roku 2003 w okresie od maja do października oznaczano stężenia ogólne makroskładników jonowych (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, SO4 2-, HCO3 - ) i na podstawie tych oznaczę obliczano przybliżone wartości zasolenia wód Wielkiego Zalewu (Zalew Szczeciński). Próby wody do badań pobierano w miejscach stacji pomiarowych zlokalizowanych w północnozachodniej (stacja nr 1) i w południowo-wschodniej (stacja nr 2) czesciach Zalewu. Wodę czerpano z warstwy powierzchniowej (z głębokości ok. 0,5 m) i naddennej (z głębokości ok. 5,0 m). Próby wody do badań pobierano z częstotliwością raz w miesiącu. Badania potwierdziły znany wcześniej fakt znacznego zróżnicowania składu jonowego i stężenia substancji mineralnych w wodach Wielkiego Zalewu w zależności od miejsca poboru prób i głębokości, z jakiej próby pobierano. Związane to było z zachodzeniem w ekosystemie Zalewu (wzdłuż drogi spływu wód w dół estuarium) przemian prowadzących do zmiany składu chemicznego wód.

Opis:
This research was conducted to evaluate the effects of water salinity and nano-silica (NS) and humic acid (HA) on Bermuda grass. The study was carried out under greenhouse and exterior space conditions in a completely randomized design with factorial arrangements. Treatments included 4 water salinity levels (0, 5, 7 and 9 dS/m) and 4 level of NS (0, 1, 2 and 3 mm/l) as well as 4 level of HA (0, 50, 100 and 150 mg/l). Results indicated a decrease in chlorophyll content, and increase in proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and electrolyte leakage (EL) with increasing levels of salinity. The chlorophyll content in greenhouse and exterior space also increased with increasing levels of NS and HA, while proline in two environments, with increasing levels of NS and HA decreased. EL with increasing levels of NS fluctuated, but with increasing levels of HA, it decreased in two environments. With increasing levels of NS, CAT in both environments was eventually decreased after the oscillation, but there was no particular trend in HA levels. With increasing levels of NS and HA, MDA in the greenhouse decreased and in the exterior space – it increased. Finally, by increasing levels of NS and HA, SOD did not show any change in the greenhouse condition, but in the exterior space, the SOD was decreased.

Opis:
This paper presents the impact of salinisation on the aquatic mollusc fauna in flooded mine subsidences in the Karvina region (Czech Republic). The results of the previous research on salinity in flooded mine subsidences show that some of them contain a high content of dissolved inorganic substances (above 1000 mgl-1). These substances can affect the vegetation and animals occurring in the water and the surrounding area. The phylum of Mollusca was selected as a model group for the fieldwork as it includes species with the proven bioindication potential. The occurrence of aquatic mollusc species was studied at 10 sites. The sites were selected based on the content of dissolved substances (the salinity gradient from <500 to >1000 mgl-1).. A total of 12 aquatic mollusc species were found, including one species identified as a potential bioindicator of the negative effect of salinisation on aquatic biota. The analysis showed statistically significant positive correlations between the content of dissolved inorganic substances and the presence of alien species Potamopyrgus antipodarum (J.E. Gray, 1843). The gradient of salinity significantly affects the species composition of the mollusc fauna in flooded mine subsidences and may affect the biodiversity of this group.

The article presents the results of research on the possibility of increasing the recovery factor of oil fields by implementing the waterflooding treatment as one of the most common enhanced oil recovery method. Based on the interpretation of data from the core flow tests, an attempt was made to characterize the displacement process using original reservoir brine and waters with lower salinity level. Additionally, the relation between the type of wettability of the rock and recovery factor was investigated. Original reservoir fluids that were characterized in terms of their basic rheological parameters were used for research purposes. The rock material consisted of 16 samples of Cambrian sandstones. The initial scope of work concerned the petrophysical characteristics of the cores, including the determination of their basic parameters, such as absolute gas permeability, porosity and pore volume. Based on the determined values of permeability, the available samples were grouped which made it possible to perform test sets for pairs with the most similar filtration parameters in the next stages of the research. Further work included the performance of relative permeability analyses and the determination of the value of the mobility factor for the oil – reservoir water system in order to determine the type of wettability of the rock and the potential efficiency of the oil displacement process. The main element of the research was the simulation of the waterflooding process carried out in two parts – the first with the use of the original reservoir water (corresponding to the secondary recovery methods) and the second with the use of low-salinity waters (the third recovery methods) in two variants of the mineralization level. Based on the obtained data of the displaced oil, for each of the displacement medium recovery factor curve were constructed and compared with the determined type of wettability of the rock.

Opis:
The population increase, urbanization and intensification of agriculture and demands for water supply in the coastal plain of Collo led to excessive pumping of the unconfined aquifer with limited dimensions. This study aimed to characterize the effect of the overexploitation of the groundwater from the only unconfined aquifer in the region, what resulted in the inversion of the groundwater flow and the rise the possible seawater pollution that is shown in the water table map. The causes and effects of the saltwater intrusion were discussed. The interpretation of the electrical conductivity measurements, chloride and sodium maps have shown clearly the areas where values were the highest with tighter curves towards the sea, the wadis Guebli and Cherka. These values distribution indicated a marine source of salinity in wells and boreholes close to the sea and wadis.
Przedyskutowano przyczyny i skutki intruzji wód słonych. Interpretacja pomiarów przewodności elektrycznej i mapy rozmieszczenia jonów chlorkowych i sodowych ujawniły obszary o wartościach tych parametrów rosnących w kierunku morza i uedów Guebli i Cherka.

W kolejnych cyklach obiegu masy następuje kumulacja soli w masie i pogorszenie właściwości wytrzymałościowych, szczególnie wytrzymałości na rozciąganie w strefie przewilżonej. Parametrem charakteryzującym stopień zasolenia wody jest przewodnictwo elektrolityczne. W artykule przedstawiono sposób zmniejszenia zasolenia wody miejskiej metodą odwróconej osmozy oraz uzyskane efekty w zakresie zmniejszenia zużycia mieszanki bentonitowej. Prawdopodobnie głównymi jonami powodującymi wzrost przewodnictwa są jony Cl-.
The article discusses the problem of water quality, which is used in the foundry used green sand in production cycle. The issue involves the problem of the salinity of water, which translates mainly to reduce the strength properties of the green sand. This article presents a method of reducing the salinity of city water and the results of its systematic research. It also indicated the results of green sand, done with the addition of city water with a high and a low conductivity. Analyses show that water is a determining factor in the properties of the sand mould, so the focus should be on maintaining its high quality.

Opis:
Spadek ten był wynikiem ograniczania dopływu zasolonych wód do kopalń czynnych (były to tzw. działania "u źródła), o wodach silnie zmineralizowanych. Przewiduje się, że największy efekt ekologiczny w zlewni Górnej Wisły zostanie uzyskany po 2006 roku w wyniku zatopienia kopalni "Piast" Ruch II i przekształcenia wyrobisk tej kopalni w zbiornik retencyjno-dozujący.
The article analyses the impact of hard coal mining restructuring on the quality of surface waters in the Upper Vistula catchment area, resulting from changes relating to salty waters discharge from mine draining. On the basis of monitoring results have been analysed quality changes of Vistula waters at the 40 km of the section from the measuring-control point below the Goczałkowice reservoir - before mine water discharge - to the measuring-control point Pustynia-Oświecim - after mine water discharge from mines in the Vistula catchment area (without "Janina" mine). There have been also analysed water quality changes in the tributaries of the Vistula river: Gostynia, Goławiecki stream, Przemsza. It has been ascertained that after 1994 followed water salinity reduction in the Gostynia and Przemsza rivers in the estuary section to the Vistula river as well as in the Vistula in the cross-section Nowy Bieruń (23.7 km) and Pustynia-Oświęcim (0.5 km). Furthermore, the balances of discharge of mine waters deriving from the drainage of mines located in the Upper Vistula river basin in 1994-2003 were compared and a balance forecast for 2010 was presented. The analysis has pointed out that the summary load of chlorides and sulphates, introduced directly to the Upper Vistula as well as through its tributaries, was subject to gradual reduction (by about 30% in the years 2000-2001 in relation to the year 1994). This decrease was the result of limitation of inflow of salty waters into operating mines (this was the so-called action "at the source"), with highly mineralised waters. We predict that the greatest ecological effect in the Upper Vistula catchment area will be achieved after the year 2006 in consequence of flooding in the "Piast-Part II" mine and transformation of workings of this mine into a storage reservoir.

Opis:
The Baltic is a stratified sea. The upper layer is under the influence of atmospheric and terrestial factors. The mechanisms of these external factors on the surficial and subsurface water layer are well recognised but the vertical exchange in the water body is still not sufficiently investigated. Field measurements at sea are time consuming and expensive. A model of the Baltic Sea distributed to and accessible by institutions investigating the Baltic Sea is advantageous because of easier exchange modelled data. The modelling, especially of the surface layer is important due to the fact that outside the coastal zone continuous measurements of physical parameters is difficult. The comparison between measured in situ and modelled data serves as a tool for the corrections to HIROMB resulting in better approximation of real phenomena occurring in the Baltic Sea. Temperature and salinity values obtained on board rlv Baltica during the POLRODEX'97 expetriment were compared with modelled values. The analysis showed significant differences between in situ measurements and obtained from the HIROMB model.

Dry areas are especially exposed to the risk of water shortages and elevated mineralization. High water salinity, caused by low precipitation, high evaporation and human impact, usually strongly limits the use of the water for irrigation. The aim of the study was to assess the quality and irrigation purpose suitability of alluvial water in the Erfoud oasis, Morocco. The samples of water were collected from 20 wells in June 2017. We observed excessive concentrations of many parameters i.a.: NO3, Cd, Ni, Na, NH4, Cl, SO4, Fe, Cr. To determine the possibility to use the water for irrigation purposes, the Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), sodium percentage (%Na), permeability index (PI), Kelly’s ratio (KR), magnesium hazards (MH) and electrical conductivity (EC) were assessed. The values of KR and MH qualified the waters as unsuitable for irrigation purposes. The observed %Na indicates that the groundwater is permissible for irrigation purposes, and permeability index, that it is of moderate quality. However, water classification using the SAR vs EC diagram confirms its high and very high alkali and salinity hazard. The mean EC value of the water was 9.5 mS cm−1.

Opis:
The Coastal Chaouia region is located south of the Casablanca city (Morocco). Since the 1970s, groundwater has been used intensively for irrigation, previously for growing citrus and currently for vegetables and forages. The increase of irrigated soils by pumping has induced environmental problems such as the degradation of groundwater quality and salt water intrusion. For these reasons, this work aimed to study the impact of the irrigation water quality upon the agricultural soils. During the study, 71 samples of well water and soil were taken to represent the whole considered area, which comprised 3 different zones (0–1.8 km, 1.8–4.5 km, and 4.5–11 km from the coast). The analyzed parameters were salinity and pH. The results showed firstly that the soil pH average values decrease for the three zones with 7.73, 7.57, and 7.52, respectively. However, the water pH averages vary from 7.24 to 7.49. For the soil electrical conductivity, it represents a light decrease moving from the nearest zone to the sea to the far one (average of 3.54, 2.66, and 2.33, respectively). A similar result is for observed water electrical conductivity with average of 6.83, 5.30, and 2.06, respectively, for the three zones. The analyses of the soil and water salinity show that both salinities decreased moving from the coast to inland. Richard and Wilcox charts have confirmed the strong mineralization and the poor quality of most of the well water which are close to the sea.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is to study the hydrochemical characteristics of Lake Dayet Erroumi (Khemisset, Morocco). Three sampling campaigns were carried out in April, July and November 2019. The temperature, pH and electrical conductivity were measured in situ using Hanna Instruments HI 98280. Concentrations of calcium, magnesium, carbonate, bicarbonate and chloride were analysed by the volumetric method. The atomic absorption technique was used to determine sodium, potassium, nitrate and sulphate. The physico-chemical analysis of the water indicates that the pH is basic. The nitrate and sulphate concentrations show that the water is of good quality according to Moroccan surface water guidelines. Furthermore, the hydrochemical facies of water is of the sodium-chloride type according to the Piper diagram. The value of the electrical conductivity indicates that the lake water has high salinity. The high mineralization of water is explained by the leaching from evaporitic rocks in the region. The principal component analysis shows that the spatial and temporal variation in salinity constitutes the major phenomenon of the hydrochemical characteristics of this lake. Salinity varies inversely with the pH value. The salinity of the water is controlled by abiotic factors (rain and evaporation). However, other parameters (pH, nitrate, carbonate and bicarbonate) depend on biotic factors. Evaporation plays a crucial role in the seasonal variation of the water chemical composition. During wet seasons, the mineralization of water decreases due to dilution by rainwater and the water level of the lake rises (high water period). During dry seasons, lake water evaporates and consequently the mineralization of the water increases, which explains the increase in salinity during the low water period.

The desalination technology can be called as bio-desalination technology to remove ions of Na+ and Cl- in brackish or saline water using mangrove plant. Before the mangrove plants were used in bio-desalination technology, the preliminary phytotoxicity test was conducted. The purpose was to determine the salinity concentration at which the mangrove species of Rhizophora mucronata can survive. The preliminary phytotoxicty test was carried out using a plastic reactor that was designed as a reed bed system. The reactors filled with gravel, sand, and artificial saline water. The variation of the NaCl concentrations were 0 mg/L as control, 10,000; 20,000; 30,000; 40,000, and 50,000 mg/L. The physical observation of the survival condition of Rhizophora mucronata was carried out during the preliminary test for 7 days. The analysis of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) on Rhizophora mucronata was conducted at the end of exposure. The results showed that Rhizophora mucronata could not survive at the concentrations of 40,000 and 50,000 mg/L. Rhizophora mucronata changed the color of the leaves to brown and the stems become softer. Multiple cell damage and the decreasing trend of sodium and chloride amounts occured on roots and stems at the salinity concentration of 50,000 mg/L. In conclusion, the high of salinity concentration (> 30,000 mg/L) can be toxic to Rhizophora mucronata.

The conductivity-salinity conversion algorithm used for oceanographic measurements of Practical Salinity on the PSS-78 scale is designed for IAPSO Standard Seawater. The application of this formula to a given sample of non-standard seawater does not necessarily result in a constant salinity value when the sample’s conductivity is measured at different temperatures. We have experimentally studied the magnitude of this non-conservative effect of Practical Salinity using a sample of Baltic seawater possessing a density anomaly of about 50 g m−3. The apparent change of salinity observed is at the limit of experimental uncertainty and is not significantly different from the drift of Standard Seawater, which was measured for comparison.

The Al-Najaf state is witnessing an increased economic development and attracting more investments that require the development of new areas and exploring new water resources. This study evaluates the quality of 12 surface water samples and groundwater from 12 wells for irrigation according to the salinity and sodicity hazards based on electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR). In addition, the concentrations of radionuclides, which include Thorium (232Th), Uranium (238U), Potassium (40K) and Cesium (137Cs) were tested in four soil samples in the study area. It was found that the average values of pH, total hardness, Na, Ca, Mg, K, Cl, SO4, NO3 for groundwater and surface water were 8 and 6, 2287 and 4006 mg/L, 1140 and 1232 mg/L, 378 and 637 mg/L, 327 and 587 mg/L, 2 and 2 mg/L, 989 and 2007 mg/L, 1149 and 1325 mg/L, as well as 2 and 2 mg/L, respectively. From salinity and sodicity hazards analysis, the groundwater had EC of 5242 µS/cm and SAR of 61, whereas surface water had EC of 6253 µS/cm and SAR of 50. Furthermore, the concentrations of radionuclides, i.e. 232Th, 238U, 40K and 137Cs in the soil samples were found to be 11.02, 34.12, 544.45, and 1.6 Bq/kg, respectively. The concentrations of radionuclides were within the worldwide baseline, expect for 40K. The study concluded that both water sources are classified as very high salinity and sodium water (class C4-S4), and it cannot be used for irrigation, only suitable for the salt tolerant crops.

Opis:
Thermohaline structure in the Gulf of Riga (GoR) was investigated by a multiplatform measurement campaign in summer 2015. Stratification of the water column was mainly controlled by the temperature while salinity had only a minor contribution. Buoyant salinity maxima with variable strength were observed in the intermediate layer of the Gulf of Riga. The salinity maxima were likely formed by a simultaneous upwelling—downwelling event at the two opposite sides of the Irbe strait. The inflowing salty water did not reach the deeper (> 35 m) parts of the gulf and, therefore, the near-bottom layer of the gulf remained isolated throughout the summer. Thus, the lateral water exchange regime in the near bottom layer of the Gulf of Riga is more complicated than it was thought previously. We suggest that the occurrence of this type of water exchange resulting in a buoyant inflow and lack of lateral transport into the near-bottom layers might contribute to the rapid seasonal oxygen decline in the Gulf of Riga

Scarcity of fresh water resources is the major constraint for agricultural development in Iran as in many other regions with arid and semi-arid climate. With the pressure on fresh water resources, the use of un-conventional water resources including brackish, saline and sewage water has received greater attentions in recent years. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of farmers' practices using saline groundwater on wheat yield and soil salinity in a Mediterranean climate of Fars province in southern Iran. The study was carried out in several commercial wheat production regions for two years. Chemical analysis of irrigation waters, volume of applied irrigation water, electrical conductivity of soil saturation extract (ECe) and yield were measured in each field. General information on agronomic practices was also collected using a questionnaire. Results demonstrate that waters with salinities higher than what has been classified as “suitable for irrigation” are being used for the production of wheat crop. Analysis of wheat yield response to saline irrigation water showed that for water salinities up to 10.7 mS∙cm–1 (threshold value) variation in yield was relatively minor, above which wheat yield decreased at a greater rate. Root zone salinity profiles showed the effect of winter rainfall in reducing soil salinity. It is concluded that although acceptable yields are obtained with some of the highly brackish waters, over application of these waters would threaten the sustainability of crop production in the region.

Opis:
Zasolenie przegród budowlanych to powszechny problem wielu obiektów, a w szczególności historycznych. Możliwość pomiaru zasolenia przegród budowlanych daje informację na temat stężenia jonów w danym materiale i umożliwia dobór właściwej metody renowacyjnej z punktu widzenia istniejącego problemu. Praca przedstawia metodę TDR jako alternatywę w wyznaczaniu zasolenia przegród budowlanych. Udoskonalenie tej metody dałoby możliwość wyznaczania dwóch parametrów (wilgotności i zasolenia) w jednym kroku pomiarowym. Przedstawiono kalibrację oraz analizę przebiegu echa impulsu elektromagnetycznego przebiegającego w przegrodach budowlanych o różnej wilgotności i różnym zasoleniu.
Salinity of the building barriers is a common problem in many objects, especially the historical ones. Ions of salt which are moved by water through the walls are the reason of their destruction. In high concentrations they crystallize inside the pores of a building structure and destroy it. They are also very inconvenient in old building renovations because of their harmful influence on external plasters. The possibility of building barriers salinity measurement gives the information about the ions concentration in the material and enables finding the suitable renovation method from the point of view of the problem. This paper presents the TDR method as an alternative in determination of building barriers salinity. Development of this method would give the possibility to measure two parameters of the barrier (water content and salinity) in one single measurement step. In the paper there are presented calibration and the analysis of the TDR electromagnetic pulse echo running in building barriers with different moisture and salinity.

This study investigated the temporal variability in the basic physical properties of deep and intermediate waters in the West Spitsbergen Current region at 76°30’N latitude from 1997 to 2016. Emphasis was placed on quantifying the changes in temperature and salinity and determining the potential drivers of these changes. Hydrographic data were obtained during annual summer cruises aboard the r/v Oceania in the Nordic Seas. The increase in the water temperature, which was especially strong in the western part of the investigated section, was associated with considerable changes in the water layers salinity. The temperature and salinity of the intermediate water increased much faster (0.021°C yr−1 and 0.0022 yr−1, respectively) than those of the deep water (0.009°C yr−1 and 0.0004 yr−1, respectively). The warming rate in the upper 2000 m was also higher than the mean warming rate of the global ocean. The source of the deep water temperature and salinity increases was the deep water inflow from the Arctic Ocean into the Greenland Sea. In contrast, the increase in these properties in the intermediate water was associated with the advection of warmer and more saline Atlantic Water from the North Atlantic to the Nordic Seas.

The water regime is the main factor contributing to the formation of landscapes in the river deltas of arid zones, any fluctuations in which lead to a change in the integral hydromorphic landscape. After the construction of the Kapshagai reservoir, the anthropogenic load on the ecosystem of the Ili River delta increased, as a result of which degradation processes, such as drying out and salinization, intensified. In the short term, this phenomenon may lead to the desertification of about 1 million ha of land in the modern river delta. In this regard, the main goal of this study is to look at the processes of desertification in the modern delta of the Ili River, using remote sensing data, which allows for quick identification of the long-term dynamics of degradation processes. For this, the authors used satellite data from Landsat 1–5 MSSS and Landsat 8OLI satellites for 1979 and 2019 and soil analysis data obtained through the ground (field) surveys. Using regression analysis of space and soil data, predictors for interpreting space images were identified and maps of landscape drying and soil salinization were compiled, reflecting the changes that have occurred over the past 40 years. As a result, it was found that in 2019, compared to 1979, the area of landscapes covered with vegetation had decreased by 12% and there was a transformation of hydromorphic landscapes into salt marshes and solonetzes. Over the past 40 years, the volume of non-saline soils has decreased by 41.3% and the volume of saline soils has increased to varying degrees. That is, at present, on the territory of the modern delta, a difficult land improvement situation has developed associated with the cessation of spring and summer floods due to the intensive water use at the Chinese and Kazakh sides.

Wykorzystanie pierwszych narzędzi kamiennych w strefie Ryftu Afrykańskiego do skrobania osadów solnych było prawdopodobnie początkiem urabiania skał. Dotyczy to sposobów wydobycia soli w odkrywkach, w kopalniach podziemnych i otworowych, transportu i wykorzystania soli.
This study is a review of the association between man and salt during the evolution of the humans from the animals to the contemporary man. Based on the model of the origin of man by Yves Coppens (1994), the author indicates that the access to salt was one of the fundamental conditions of the evolutionary success of the hominids and the origin of the homo sapiens. Using the first rock tools to scratch salt deposits in the area of the African Rift was probably how mineral extraction began. Owing to the biological conditions of mankind, salt always played the role of an important nutrient. Various associations between man and salt were documented since the origin of alphabet. Those concerned the methods of salt extraction from open pits, underground mines, and solution mines, as well as salt transportation, and applications of salt. Salt extraction considerably influenced the organization and economies of states in ancient, medieval, and contemporary times. Salt was and has been collected from the sea, salt outcrops, brine leaks, surface deposits, and underground formations. Demonstrating the present-day uses of salt, we indicate the current diversity of mining technologies, methods, and types of working development, including the systems of underground storage in former workings and caverns, as well as making old workings available to tourists. The use of brines or salty air in underground mines and graduation towers for medical purposes is expanding. The workings in salt mines were also used for conducting nuclear tests. This paper also mentions the adverse effects of salt waste, including the increased salinity of watercourses and large, natural water reservoirs. For that reason, the need of increased rationality and responsibility in salt management has been indicated.

Opis:
In the discussion of water quality control, the first and most effective parameter that affects other variables and water quality parameters is the temperature situation and water temperature parameters that control many ecological and chemical processes in reservoirs. Additionally, one of the most important quality parameters studied in the quality of water resources of dams and reservoirs is the study of water quality in terms of salinity. The salinity of the reservoirs is primarily due to the rivers leading into them. The control of error in the reservoirs is always considered because the outlet water of the reservoirs, depending on the type of consumption, should always be standard in terms of salinity. Therefore, in this study, using the available statistics, the Ce-Qual-W2 two-dimensional model was used to simulate the heat and salinity layering of the Latyan Dam reservoir. The results showed that with warming and shifting from spring to late summer, the slope of temperature changes at depth increases and thermal layering intensifies, and a severe temperature difference occurs at depth. The results of sensitivity analysis also showed that by decreasing the wind shear coefficient (WSC), the reservoir water temperature increases, so that by increasing or decreasing the value of this coefficient by 0.4, the average water temperature by 0.56°C changes inversely, and the results also show that by increasing or decreasing the value of the shade coefficient by 0.85, the average water temperature changes by about 7.62°C, directly.

Changes in the basic physical properties of selected areas of the Baltic Proper were analysed on the basis of the results of a 12-year series of high-resolution measurements collected during cruises of r/v ‘Oceania’. The high-resolution CTD sections covered three main basins: the Bornholm Basin, Słupsk Furrow and Gdańsk Basin. Positive temperature trends of 0.11 and 0.16◦C year−1 were observed in the surface and deep layers respectively. The salinity trend was also positive. The rise in the air temperature has probably caused the increase in surface water temperature, while advection has been of greater significance in the deep layer. The increase in salinity coincides with the more frequent occurrence of small and medium-size inflows through the Danish Straits, even though large inflows are evidently less frequent than used to be the case. The seasonal variability of temperature in the water column was analysed. The phase shift in the seasonal evolution with depth is described. The maximum temperature shift in the waters investigated varies from 32 to 38 days.

A total of 439 measurements of downward ultraviolet irradiance in North European coastal waters have been analysed, half of which have been taken from other authors. The depths Z(10%) where the irradiance is reduced to 10% of its surface value vary by one order of magnitude in the open coastal waters,b oth at wavelengths of 310 nm (0.3–10.4 m) and 380 nm (1.2–13.0 m). In the fjords and estuaries the depth ranges are reduced to 0.08–6.1 m at 310 nm and 0.18–7.7 m at 380 nm. Mixing with saline ocean waters can increase these light penetration depths to more than 10 m,while river water can reduce them to a few centimetres.

The paper presents change of water quality within Vistula River in the city of Warsaw. Water samples for analysis were taken from four different measurement points in the period from February to June 2016. Based on the results of laboratory studies it was demonstrated that the Vistula River in Warsaw is exposed to the input of pollutants contributing to increase the salinity, especially in winter and early spring. The concentration of both chlorides and sulphates were highest in February and was decreasing in subsequent months of the year. At the same time it has been shown that during the entire study period the concentration of Cl– ion exceeded the limit values for water quality II class in Poland. While the SO4 2– concentrations in water samples taken in the winter months (February-March) exceeded the limit values for the second quality class, in April, it was within the acceptable range for II class water quality, and in May and June does not exceed the value referred to as standard for I class of water quality. Based on the analysis of indicators of nutrients (N-NH4 , N-NO3 , Ptot.) it was found that the Vistula is not exposed to eutrophication due to their low concentration, which indicates a very good water quality. At the same time permanganate index (CODMn) indicates a low organic load of Vistula.

Shoreline changes and groundwater quality monitoring have become pressing issues for the coastal region of Bangladesh. This study investigated the shoreline changes from 2000 to 2020 and evaluated the groundwater quality, as well as SWI in the Kuakata coastal area. While analyzing satellite images, the temporal shoreline changes were assessed through the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) in ArcGIS 10.4.1. Higher erosion rates (>2 m/year) were found in the southernmost part and the SE part of the studied area. Twenty-five groundwater samples were collected, and the physicochemical parameters were measured to assess the groundwater quality. The geographic information system (GIS) was used to assess the spatial variation of the EC, pH, and Cl⁻ contents through the inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation method. The EC, Cl⁻, and pH values of the studied groundwater ranged from (1.2 mS/cm to 19.5 mS/cm), (79.88 mg/L to 11241.67 mg/L), and (7.9 to 8.7), repectively. The analysis revealed that the majority of the groundwater samples were unsuitable for drinking purpose due to higher EC and Cl⁻ values. Saline water intrusion (SWI) was determined by using the alternative EC vs Cl⁻ method in the southern part of the Kuakata beach area, which was closest to the sea.

The article presents research data on the amount of salts in the irrigated soils of the Mughan-Salyan massif, their composition, water-salt regime, and their forecast. It was found that the soils on the territory of the massif were saline to varying degrees. In general, the area of non-saline soils in the massif is 125,650 ha, mildly - 272,070 ha, moderately - 210,560 ha, highly - 125,850 ha, very highly - 109,450 ha and saline soils - 27,520 ha. The absorbed bases in the soils of the massif were studied, and it was determined that they change depending on the amount of salts as follows: in mildly saline soils, Ca - 57.82-68.31%, Mg - 25.26-36.28%, Na - 5.49-6.43%; in moderately saline soils - 56.77-65.76%, 27.03-35.58%, 7.12-7.94%, respectively; in highly saline areas - 54.05–64.75%, 24.94-43.67% and 9.19-14.42%. As you can see, the soils are mildly and moderately saline. The soils in the surveyed areas are saline to varying degrees (i.e., the average value of salts in the 0-100 cm layer of the soil varies between 0.25 and 1.00%). The biological product used in these soils contains a wide range of macro and microelements, humic acids, fulvic acids, amino acids, vitamins and enzymes that do not contain BioEcoGum mineral fertilisers. This biological product was used for the first time and one of the main goals was to study the improvement of water-physical properties of soils after its use. Therefore, the water-salt regime of the soils of the study area was studied on three experimental sites selected for the area, the number of irrigations for different plants, and their norms were determined taking into account the depth of groundwater in the soils and shown in tabular form. They are widely used in farms and these regions, taking into account the proposed irrigation norms and their quantity.

Relationships between the zooplankton community andv arious environmental factors (salinity, temperature, sampling depth and bottom depth) were established in the European Arctic Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) using multivariate statistics. Three main zooplankton communities were identified: an Atlantic Shallow Community (AtSC), an Arctic Shallow Community (ArSC) anda Deep Water Community (DWC). All species belonging to AtSC andArSC were pooledandtheir relative abundances in the total zooplankton calculated with respect to a particular layer (surface, midan dd eep strata), regions (the Barents Sea, Fram Strait andt he waters off northern Svalbard), years (1999 or 2003) and seasons (spring or autumn). Mapping of the proportions of Arctic andA tlantic species ledto the conclusion that zooplankton from the MIZs do not exactly follow complementary water masses, although the general pattern of AtSC and ArSC dominance accords with the physical oceanography of the study area (AtW and ArW respectively). The mid layer proved to be a better predictor of mesozooplankton distribution than the unstable conditions near the surface.

Since 1987 annual summer cruises to the Nordic Seas and Fram Strait have been conducted by the IO PAN research vessel Oceania under the long-term monitoring program AREX. Here we present a short description of measurements and preliminary results obtained during the open ocean part of the AREX 2016 cruise. Spatial distributions of Atlantic water temperature and salinity in 2016 are similar to their long-term mean fields except for warmer recirculation of Atlantic water in the northern Fram Strait. The longest observation record from the section N along 768300N reveals a steady increase of Atlantic water salinity, while temperature trend depends strongly on parametrization used to define the Atlantic water layer. However spatially averaged temperature at different depths indicate an increase of Atlantic water temperature in the whole layer from the surface down to 1000 m.

From October 2002 until March 2003 surprisingly warm, oxygenated waters were frequently encountered in the Baltic Sea in the area between the Bornholm and Fårö Deeps from the halocline down to the bottom. Owing to their ventilation effect in the stagnating deep waters, their occasional observations have partly been incorrectly attributed to the inflow events of October 2002 or January 2003. The emergence of some of these waters can be traced back to the exceptional summer weather conditions in August and September 2002 in central Europe. The warm waters played a remarkable renewal pacemaker role for the subsequent important winter inflow of January 2003. The evolution of this summer inflow is described and possible causes are discussed.

Eutrophication-related problems in the Western Harbour ofA lexandria were studied monthly from April 1999 to March 2000. Variation in salinity appeared to be the key to all changes in water quality and plankton abundance in the harbour. Both at the surface and near the bottom the salinity was lower (annual average: 35.1 and 38.3 PSU respectively) than in the open sea (39 PSU). Dissolved oxygen levels indicated poor aeration conditions along the water column (2.3–3.98 mg l−1). Average pH values were approximately similar in the two layers (8.1 and 8 respectively) but exhibited different ranges ofv ariations. Nutrient salts varied widely, often occurring in high concentrations, with ranges of 0.12–5.7 and 0.06–2.6 μM at the surface and the bottom respectively for phosphate, 0.21–20.46 and 0.25–18.12 μM for nitrate, 0.29–3.3 and 0.23–1.66 μM f or nitrite, 0.56–57.46 and 2.32–43.73 μM for ammonia and 0.3–36.3 and 0.48–38.4 μM for silicate. As a result ofn utrient enrichment, phytoplankton growth was very intensive, reflected by an abnormally high concentration ofc hlorophyll a (annual average: 33.82 μg l−1). At the same time the death ofl arge numbers ofp hytoplankton cells could be inferred from the relatively large amount of phaeopigment (annual average: 10.39 μg l−1). The high levels ofn utrient salts and phytoplankton biomass together serve as a good indicator ofhig h eutrophication levels in the Western Harbour throughout the year. These conditions clearly affected the zooplankton stock, which varied between 5.8–93.6×103 indiv. m−3, although for most of the time values remained at a low level (annual average: 26 728 indiv. m−3).

A project was developed concerning the operational system of surveillance and the recording of episodic events in the Baltic Sea. In situ information was to be combined with multi-sensory satellite imagery to determine the extent of algal blooms, to track their evolution and that of rapid environmental events like hydrological fronts. The main element of the system was an autonomous Ferry Box module on a ferry operating between Gdynia and Karlskrona, automatically measuring temperature, salinity and chlorophyll a fluorescence. At pre-selected locations, discrete water samples were collected, which were subsequently analysed for their phytoplankton content, and algal hepato- and neurotoxins; they were also used in toxicity tests with Artemia franciscana.

A new dataset of benthic foraminiferal assemblages from Adventfjorden (tributary fjord of Isfjorden, West Spitsbergen) was compared with the results of a study conducted by Zajączkowski et al. (2010) in Hornsund (West Spitsbergen). According to Nilsen et al. (2016), Atlantic water inflow to the Isfjorden Trough occurs more readily than to anywhere else along the shelf of Spitsbergen; thus, we compared the foraminiferal assemblages of the outwash Adventfjorden fjord, located in the Isfjorden system, with glacial Hornsund, located in southwest Spitsbergen. Despite the juxtaposition of Adventfjorden and Hornsund the data revealed varying impacts of shelf-transformed water (STW) on the benthic foraminiferal assemblages. Outer and central Adventfjorden was dominated by Adercotryma glomerata, Recurvoides turbinata and Spiroplectammina sp., reflecting the presence of STW, while abundant Melonis barleeanus in the central area of the fjord indicated a large flux of unaltered organic matter. Only the head of the fjord was dominated by the glaciomarine taxa Cassidulina reniforme and Elphidium clavatum. Foraminiferal fauna characteristic of STW-influenced environments (i.e., Nonionellina labradorica and R. turbinata) were also observed in outer Hornsund. However, the glacier-proximal taxa E. clavatum and C. reniforme were dominant throughout the fjord, demonstrating the impacts of meltwater and high sedimentation. Therefore, it is likely that in Hornsund, glacial impact is a major environmental factor, which is stronger than the influence of STW.

Silicon is a major nutrient for siliceous primary producers, which can become a potential limiting nutrient in oligotrophic areas. Most of the silicon inputs to the marine environment come from continental discharges, from both superficial and ground waters. This study analyses the main sources of silicon and their dynamics along the southernmost 43 km of shoreline in the Gulf of Valencia (Western Mediterranean Sea). The salinity and silicate concentration in the different compartments (springs, freshwater wells, beach groundwater, surf zone and coastal waters) in this coastal area were determined. In addition, chlorophyll a and phytoplankton community were analyzed in the surf zone and coastal waters. Silicate concentrations in freshwater wells ranged between 130 and 150 μM, whereas concentrations of this nutrient declined to 49 μM in freshwater–seawater mixture transects. At the same time, there was a positive gradient in silicate for both freshwater and coastal waters southward. An amount of 18.7 t of dissolved silicate was estimated in the nearest first kilometre nearest to the coastline, 6 t of this silicate belonged to the background sea level. On the other hand, the sum of the main rivers in the area supplies 1.6 t of dissolved silicate per day. This implies that a large amount of the remaining 11.1 t must derive from submarine groundwater discharges, which would thus represent 59% of the coastal dissolved silicate budget. Overall, it is suggested that a subterranean transport pathway must contribute considerably to silicate concentrations throughout this zone, which is characterized as permeable.

Eastern Mediterranean water and heat balances were analysed over 52 years. The modelling uses a process-oriented approach resolving the one-dimensional equations of momentum, heat and salt conservation; turbulence is modelled using a twoequation model. The results indicate that calculated temperature and salinity follow the reanalysed data well. The water balance in the Eastern Mediterranean basin was controlled by the difference between inflows and outflows through the Sicily Channel and by net precipitation. The freshwater component displayed a negative trend over the study period, indicating increasing salinity in the basin. The heat balance was controlled by heat loss from the water surface, solar radiation into the sea and heat flow through the Sicily Channel. Both solar radiation and net heat loss displayed increasing trends, probably due to decreased total cloud cover. In addition, the heat balance indicated a net import of approximately 9 W m−2 of heat to the Eastern Mediterranean Basin from the Western Basin.

Opis:
The Pogórska Wola palaeovalley of combined tectonic and erosional origin dissects the Mesozoic floor of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin to a depth exceeding 1200 m. It formed during Paleogene times presumably due to fluvial and submarine erosion, concentrated along a local pre-Late Badenian graben system. All members of the foredeep’s Badenian-Sarmatian sedimentary fill attain distinctly greater values inside the palaeovalley than on top of elevated plateaux on palaeovalley shoulders. The fill comprises the Early to Late Badenian sub-evaporite Skawina Formation, the laterally equivalent Late Badenian evaporite Krzyżanowice and Wieliczka formations and the supra-evaporite Late Badenian to Early Sarmatian Machów Formation. Over the plateaux and in the highest palaeovalley segment, the evaporites are developed in the sulphate facies Krzyżanowice Formation, whereas in the lower palaeovalley segments chloride-sulphate facies evaporites of the Wieliczka Formation occur. The rock salt-bearing rocks are involved in thrusting and folding at the Carpathian orogenic front, which helps to assess the lateral extent of the Wieliczka Formation in seismic records. The deep palaeotopographic position of the evaporites inside the palaeovalley, combined with their lithological and sedimentary features, point to their formation via subaqueous gravity flow-driven redeposition of originally shallow-water evaporites, preferentially halite-bearing, presumably combined with precipitation from sulphate and chloride brines at the palaeovalley floor. Both the redeposited sediments and the brines must have come from the adjacent plateaux and from a thrust-sheet top basin, approaching from the south on top of the Cretaceous-Paleogene Carpathian flysch thrust wedge.

Opis:
The first part of the Baltic Sea ecohydrodynamic model, based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), was validated by long-term observations of sea level, salinity and water temperature fluctuations. The modelled sea surface temperature (SST) fields were also compared to satellite images – satisfactory correlation coefficients were obtained. The model bias and efficiency coefficients of the modelled variables in relation to the observed values were determined. The quality of model simulations in relation to measured values was estimated with respect to spatial and seasonal variability in shallow and deep coastal waters as well as in the open sea. The results indicated the high quality of simulations by the hydrodynamic model.

Opis:
This paper is based on the idea that the hydrographical conditions in the Bornholm Basin, and any other basin, can be understood from knowledge of general hydromechanical principles and basin-specific factors. Published results on the variability of the vertical stratification are shown and discussed. Such analyses demonstrate the residence time of water at different depth levels. Different modes of currents forced by winds and by stratification gradients at open vertical boundaries are presented. Vertical mixing is discussed and published results for the Bornholm Basin are shown. An experiment demonstrates that the diffusive properties of the enclosed basin, i.e. below the sill depth of the Słupsk Furrow, can be computed quite well from the horizontal mean vertical diffusivity obtained from historical hydrographical observations. A published two decades long simulation of the vertical stratification shows that the through flow and modification of new deepwater in the Bornholm Basin can be well described based on existing knowledge regarding crucial hydromechanical processes. It also suggests, indirectly, that there should be a weak anticyclonic circulation above the sill depth, which is supported by current measurements.

Opis:
Microorganisms associated with aquatic macrophytes can in various ways interact with a plant and influence its activity and vice versa. A low-salinity intrusion into freshwater environment can affect plant-microorganism interactions. In this study, effects of different salinity conditions on the abundance and community composition of associated microorganisms with charophytes in the Curonian Lagoon were assessed. From the results, we found that short term salinity changes affected the abundance of bacteria and fungi associated with charophytes, whereas no response was reflected in the taxa composition of fungi, showing that other factors could be of more importance. The increased fungi abundances and different fungi composition in August in comparison to June was probably related to senescence process of aquatic vegetation. 8 fungi taxa were isolated and identified in association with charophytes, while higher diversity was revealed by DGGE technique.

Opis:
High-latitude fjords, very vulnerable to global change, are impacted by their land and ocean boundaries, and they may be influenced by terrestrial water discharges and oceanic water inputs into them. This may be reflected by temporal and spatial patterns in concentrations of biogeochemically important constituents. This paper analyses information relating to the total suspended matter (TSM) concentration in the Porsanger fjord (Porsangerfjorden), which is situated in the coastal waters of the Barents Sea. Water samples and a set of physical data (water temperature, salinity, inherent optical properties) were obtained during two field expeditions in the spring and summer of 2014 and 2015. Bio-optical relationships were derived from these measurements, enabling optical data to be interpreted in terms of TSM concentrations. The results revealed significant temporal variability of TSM concentration, which was strongly influenced by precipitation, terrestrial water discharge and tidal phase. Spatial distribution of TSM concentration was related to the bathymetry of the fjord, dividing this basin into three subregions. TSM concentrations ranged from 0.72 to 0.132 g m−3 at the surface (0–2 m) and from 0.5 to 0.67 g m−3 at 40 m depth. The average mineral fraction was estimated to be 44% at surface and 53% at 40 m.

Opis:
From 1994 to 1996 changes in the concentrations of dissolved mono- (MCHO) and total dissolved polysaccharides (TCHO) as well as the activities of carbohydratedegrading enzymes (α- and β-glucosidase, glucosaminidase) were investigated during mixing of water from the River Odra and the open Pomeranian Bight. This study addresses the question of whether their distribution was a result of physical dilution alone or if biological interactions were detectable. Within the salinity gradient, ranging from 1.9 to 7.8 PSU, TCHO declined from 13.2 μmol l−1 near the Świna mouth to 2.8 μmol l−1 after mixing. Concentrations of MCHO decreased from 3.4 μmol l−1 to 1.1 μmol l−1 but its distribution pattern varied more between summer and autumn than that of TCHO. The hydrolysis rate (Hr) by glucosidase and glucosaminidase activities was reduced from 13.9% h−1 to 0.3% h−1 and 9.9% h−1 to 0.2% h−1, respectively, and correlated with the uptake rate of glucose (To) by bacteria. In summer, the To/Hr ratio increased from about 1.2 to 29.4, mainly because of stronger decreases in Hr than in To. It was shown that the relationship between enzymatic release and uptake of carbohydrates influences the concentration of dissolved carbohydrates within the salinity gradient. Most probably, the decrease in carbohydrate-degrading enzymes is the result of reduced substrate stimulation and the lower number of particle-associated bacteria.
