Opis:
This article reports on the updating and validation of a questionnaire for vocabulary learning strategies. An English as a second language (ESL) version of the Vocabulary Learning Questionnaire (VLQ), first published in Gu and Johnson (1996), was created based on its latest version. Two response formats were piloted, that is, a paper version with a 7-point Likert scale and an online version with a 100-point slider bar. A series of validation procedures resulted in a 62-item instrument which was then administered online among 682 English language learners at the tertiary level in China. The paper presents evidence of content validity, construct validity, internal consistency reliability, and predictive validity. It also provides suggestions for interpreting and using the questionnaire for both research and instructional purposes.

Incidental vocabulary learning has attracted a great deal of attention in ELT research. However, it is important that teacher and researcher exploitation of vocabulary developments be guided by more than replication of previous research designs. For conclusions based on empirical research to be valid, it is important to be clear about exactly what any data being gathered pertains to. While Karakaş & Sariçoban (2012) claim to have presented a solid piece of research on the effects of subtitled cartoons on incidental vocabulary learning, in practice it is not so. It is argued that the research design validity resulted in questionable results having little relevance to genuine incidental vocabulary learning.

This study explores the complex relationships between language learning motivation, vocabulary learning strategies, and two components of second language vocabulary knowledge (i.e., vocabulary size and depth), within the framework of self-regulated learning. Responses to questionnaires were gathered from 185 secondary-level Korean adolescent learners of English as a foreign language, regarding their motivation and vocabulary learning strategy use; additionally, the results of their vocabulary size and depth tests were collected. We adopted structural equation modeling for analysis, with vocabulary learning strategies consisting of memory, cognitive, and metacognitive categories, and vocabulary knowledge consisting of vocabulary size and depth. The results showed that motivation directly predicted vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary knowledge, and indirectly predicted vocabulary knowledge via vocabulary learning strategies. When further classified, intrinsic motivation was found to have a stronger influence on the use of vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary knowledge than extrinsic motivation. We discuss the implications of increasing learners’ motivation and repertoire of strategies for improving vocabulary size and depth.

This study investigated EFL learners’ perspectives about their vocabulary learning experiences via a smartphone application. An online demographic questionnaire was used for recruiting 50 EFL learners from a language teaching channel in Telegram messenger required to use a smartphone application called Vocabulary Flashcards 2016 for a month. After finishing the sampling procedure, the participants were asked to take part in Dialang online diagnostic test to specify their vocabulary level proficiency based on CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). The quantitative and qualitative data were collected utilizing evaluation questionnaires and semi-structured interviews respectively. The evaluation questionnaire adapted from Chapelle’s (2001) evaluation criterion was used to evaluate the application from the users’ perspectives. This study investigated the effects of learners’ proficiency level and gender differences on using the application, and their perspectives on the negative and positive aspects of the application were also uncovered. The findings showed that the users held positive attitudes towards the application because it influenced their learning positively and provided them with both form and meaning-focused instruction, but they were dissatisfied with the app’s levels and authenticity. Results of independent t-test and ANOVA respectively showed that gender and vocabulary proficiency level did not make significant difference on participants’ app usage patterns. The findings of this study highlighted the users’ localized needs which could be used as guidelines for customized vocabulary apps’ development purposes. The study’s implications for learners, teachers, and app developers are discussed in detail.

The paper begins with an explication of the notions of collocation and collocational competence. It further presents the results of an analysis of the relevant research on collocational competence. Based on publications of researchers from all over the world, the research question which has been formulated concerns the dependency between a well developed collocational competence and the level of proficiency in reading, listening, writing and speaking. And conversely, the analysis seeks to find out if the language skills above automatically develop learners’ collocational competence. Finally, the article shows the influence of collocational competence on language reception and production, and discusses some methods which may improve foreign language learners’ collocational competence

It is not fully known whether nouns or verbs are easier to learn in a second language. A noun learning advantage has been observed for children in many languages (e.g., Gentner, 1982), but few have examined whether mature second language learners show a similar pattern. In the current study 84 university students were trained with nonce words for 96 familiar, concrete concepts (half nouns, half verbs), half labeled ostensibly, and half in contexts that allowed label meanings to be inferred. Vocabulary knowledge was assessed through recognition tests after a delay of either five minutes or one week. No evidence of a word class advantage was found-participants did not demonstrate a noun advantage. Ostensive training was superior to inferential training at five minutes but not after one week.

Opis:
The purpose of this study is to compare the use of traditional English flash cards and the vocabulary learning method of Augmented Reality to see which English vocabulary learning method is more efficient for elementary school students. The study was conducted at an elementary school in Taiwan, and there were 60 student participants in total. This study adopted an unequal pre-test and post-test experimental design. The study was conducted in two stages in terms of data collection. In the first stage, the control and experimental group took the English vocabulary test, without any teacher instruction, as the pretest. In the second stage, the control group used flashcards to learn 20 target English words by themselves for 40 minutes. The experimental group adopted the Augmented Reality 3D effect on the 20 target words by themselves for 40 minutes. After that, both groups took the same English vocabulary test again, as the posttest. On the whole, Augmented Reality teaching effects apparently exceed the effects of the traditional vocabulary learning method. The results of this study show that the learning method of Augmented Reality was more efficient than that of learning with English flash cards among the various proficiency levels (high, intermediate, and low) in terms of English vocabulary learning. The way of using English flash cards showed significant differences between high and low level groups, as well as between intermediate and low level groups, with the exception being the difference between high and intermediate level groups. It is worthwhile improving children’s English vocabulary learning by using Augmented Reality, by incorporating it into their daily lives through mobile learning.

Communicative approaches to language teaching assume the learning occurs as a by-product of communication. The present study explores this issue experimentally, examining the phenomenon of implicit learning among Polish learners of English. The study focuses on learning to apply new English words in semantically appropriate contexts. Whether the learning is implicit or not is determined using subjective measures of awareness (following Z. Dienes/ R. Scott 2005). Polish learners of English read English sentences containing 4 target words. Next they completed an unexpected test on new sentences in which they were asked to indicate whether target words were used correctly and to provide confidence and source judgements to each answer, as subjective measures of awareness (guess/ intuition responses taken as reflecting implicit knowledge). The experimental group was compared with a control group who did not receive training. Findings include significantly above chance performance on guess/ intuition responses in both groups, with an advantage in the experimental group that approached significance, suggesting that this group may have indeed implicitly learnt about the applicable semantic contexts for the newly learnt words. The learning effect did not extend to appropriate but semantically different contexts to the ones participants saw in training, suggesting implicit learning is restricted in its scope. Educators must therefore ensure to provide representative sentence samples when introducing new words and may need to explicitly point out any contexts which semantically diverge from the ones the students were exposed to.

Level B (Independent user) is a specific stage in the process of language education because it consists of two completely different levels of language proficiency. The objectives and content of teaching on B1 level (Threshold or intermediate) and B2 (Vantage or upper intermediate) are incompatible when it comes to quantity and quality. It is necessary to choose different methods of teaching/learning at B2 level, otherwise the progress in learning can be slowed (the language learning plateau). The aim of the article is to present the specifics of learning vocabulary at B2 (Vantage or upper intermediate) level and provide some didactic strategies that can help teachers to minimize the plateauing of language learning and its effects. They can also help students in learning new vocabulary effectively.

Learning vocabulary is one of the problems faced by English language learners. The inability to use vocabulary poses difficulties to learn the language effectively. One of the ways to attract to and interest learners in learning vocabulary is through the integration of technology, such as the use of digital storytelling as its interactivity can create interest in learning. This study examined the effects of digital storytelling in vocabulary learning among young Malaysian English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. Qualitative case study was employed as the research design of this study. Findings revealed that there were several impacts of digital storytelling on vocabulary learning and all of these effects are positive. Some implications of digital storytelling on education are also discussed in this paper.

Developing learners' lexical subsystem is one of the most important tasks of foreign language didactics. The observable turn towards vocabulary (,,Wortschatzwende’’) has contributed to an in-depth reflection on learners' lexical competence, including their strategic competence. The aim of this article is to present results of a correlational research concerning the influence of personality variables (understood according to the Five-Factor Model) on the range and frequency of strategies used by Polish high-school students to learn German vocabulary. The research project described in this article was conducted in April 2021. The polish adaptation of the NEO Five-Factor Inventory was applied to examine the learners’ personality traits. The Polish version of Schmitt's Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (VLSQ) was used to investigate students’ preferred strategies for learning German vocabulary. Based on the conclusions from the research, an attempt was made to formulate practical guidelines for foreign language teachers concerning the possibilities of developing learners' lexical competence. The report is complemented by a list of open research questions and problems in this field.

In an average Polish language intermediate class (level B1/B2) there are two types of learners; namely, heritage language learners (HLLs) and foreign language learners (FLLs). HLLs are of Polish origin and have gained partial knowledge of the language in a natural environment, unlike FLLs who have learnt Polish in a formal institutional setting and have no Polish roots whatsoever.Teachers of Polish as a foreign/second language claim (in anecdotal evidence), that HLLs speak more fluently, particularly when talking about everyday topics, and that their production sounds more native like, as it is more formulaic. HLLs are, however, perceived as poorer vocabulary learners than FLLs. The aim of the research described in this article was to find out if this phenomenon can be ascribed to the different number and/or type of vocabulary learning strategies used by learners from the two groups.

This case study investigates the effectiveness of the application of the blended approach to teaching a foreign language. The approach can be defined as a combination of a face-to-face classroom component with online instruction (Graham 2003). In the present study the element that was blended within the face-to-face component was asynchronous computer mediated communication in the form of e-mail exchanges between a native speaker of English and a Polish learner of English. The effectiveness of the approach was measured in terms of expanding vocabulary knowledge. The findings revealed that e-mail correspondence treated as an integral part of a language course helped the student to expand her vocabulary, eliminate the majority of spelling mistakes and influenced the complexity of her writing.

This study describes an experiment in vocabulary learning. The vocabulary was presented to students in two different forms, the classical one (a list of vocabulary presented on a paper sheet), and a computer-generated one (to guarantee validity: with the same list as shown on the paper sheet). No other variables have influenced learning. The remembrance of the vocabulary was tested immediately after, one day after and one week after learning. The results: Vocabulary remembrance was strikingly worse when learning from the computer screen in comparison with learning the classical way, from the paper sheet.

This study examined the efficacy of using Quizlet, a popular online study tool, to develop L2 English vocabulary. A total of 9 Japanese university EFL students participated in the study. The learners studied Coxhead’s (2001) academic vocabulary list (AWL) via Quizlet over the course of 10 weeks. Results of the pre- and post-tests revealed that the learners were able to make statistically significant gains. Moreover, a questionnaire administered by the researcher indicated that the students had positive perceptions of Quizlet to study L2 vocabulary. Specifically, all three constructs studied – perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention to use Quizlet – had mean scores greater than 4 on a 5-point Likert scale, indicating a high-level of agreement. Based on these findings, the author supports the use of Quizlet in the EFL classroom.

This research investigates the effects of the use of Kahoot! to improve English vocabulary learning in an EFL context using a quasi-experimental post-test design. An experimental and a control group from two 9th grade classes participated in the study. A pre- and post-test were applied to both groups and the scores of both groups were compared to determine whether there was any variation. The interventions in each group consisted of two lessons a week for four weeks. In particular, the results of the experimental treatment indicated an improvement regarding English vocabulary knowledge using the Kahoot! app, with a significant variation and a medium effect size. In general, this suggests the necessity of implementing new strategies with the available ICTs at hand to enhance the learning of English in Chilean classrooms.

Forming synchronous and asynchronous learning networks utilizing internet has been simplified by new technologies. The present study investigated the effects of learners’ choice of cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies on vocabulary gain and retention levels in the e-learning context. 180 participants took part in this study and 120 audio podcasts plus still and animated pictures were presented to the participants in the Telegram channel. 23 strategy items on a 5-point Likert scale were presented to the participants by means of a voting robot system on the main page of the channel after the treatment. Additionally, an immediate as well as a delayed vocabulary posttest in the form of multiple-choice were administered, separately. Four one-way ANOVAs were run in order to answer the questions. The results revealed that the choice of cognitive strategy significantly affected the level of vocabulary gain and retention. In other words, learners who applied more cognitive strategies had higher levels in vocabulary gain and retention. However, the choice of meta-cognitive strategy had no considerable influence on vocabulary gain and retention.

Since vocabulary is a strong predictor of reading comprehension, vocabulary homework is seen as a way to improve reading comprehension. This study utilized an online learning platform to deliver vocabulary homework to students learning reading skills in the classroom and compare their scores with students given paper-based homework and those who did not receive any homework. The objective of the research was to determine the differences in reading achievement between students who were given either paper-based vocabulary homework or online vocabulary homework, in addition to classroom face-to-face interaction (experimental groups) and those who only participated in face-to-face interaction in the classroom (control group). Two experimental groups were instructed to complete vocabulary homework outside of the classroom. The selected vocabulary for homework consisted of 400 words common to the target academic texts. The data were collected by administering a reading comprehension pre-test and post-test, where five academic texts were used with approximately ten questions for each text. The results revealed a p-value of 0.047 for the paper-based homework group, 0.045 for the online vocabulary group, and 0.338 for the control group, which suggests that both experimental groups outperformed the control group in the post-test.

This study aims to show the effect of individual SMS-based academic vocabulary reporting activities on EAP learners’ general academic vocabulary learning and attitudes. An experimental design was employed for this purpose. A total of 60 EAP students were randomly assigned to three different cohorts, consisting of 20 students each. The three different cohorts received 120 academic words and reported their meaning and definition in Indonesian (AVRI), in English (AVRE), and in both Indonesian and English (AVRIE). Then, a general academic vocabulary test (GAVT) was administered to assess their academic vocabulary acquisition. The findings indicate that learning English academic vocabulary applying mixed languages revealed higher vocabulary scores gains than the other two groups because the double representations of the meanings strengthen their comprehension and acquisition. Learners also show positive attitudes toward the implementation of SMS-based reporting activities as they can select their vocabulary more freely to suit their learning needs.

The focus of these projects has been on the impact of English on the development of the mother tongue and the development of skills in the foreign language. Overall the results show that there is no negative effect on the mother tongue and that the gains in English proficiency are substantial. Given the specific situation in the Netherlands where English is very present, in particular in the media, a real comparison of the findings with those from other countries is problematic.

In this article, we discuss the elaboration and use of vocabulary lists aimed for learners of French as a for-eign language. These lists are commonly based on corpora, which, in the ideal case, are representative, relevant and large. As for the English language, this kind of corpora has been available for a long time (e.g. the COCA and the BNC). Vocabulary lists, which are often used in learning contexts, have been based on these corpora. The situation is, however, less favorable when it comes to the French language, with fewer corpora meeting the mentioned criteria, and, thus, fewer possibilities to create vocabulary lists that are useful for learners. In this contribution, we present work that has been done in order to create a vocabulary list, Riksprovsordlistan, containing about 4,000 words and used at all Swedish universities. The discussion focuses on methodological challenges such as choice of counting unit – lemma vs. word family –, the role of frequency, thematic vocabulary, as well as characteristics of written vs. spoken corpora.

This study aimed to find out whether watching subtitled cartoons influences incidental vocabulary learning. The study was conducted with 42 first grade English Language Teaching (ELT) department students at the University of Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Burdur. To collect data from the subjects, a 5-point vocabulary knowledge scale was used and 18 target words were integrated into the scale. The pre-test and post-test group design was selected for the administration. After subjects had been randomly assigned into two groups (one subtitle group and the other no-subtitle group), they were given the same pre- and post-tests. The findings of study did not support the assumption that the subtitle group would outperform the no-subtitle group, since there were no significant differences between two groups according to t-test results. However, there was significant improvement in both of the groups from pre-test to post-test scores. This progress was attributed to the presentation of target words in cartoons. In this way, the target words were contextualized and it became easy for participants to elicit the meanings of the words.

Rapid changes in technology are reflected into all walks of education as well as language learning and teaching situations. In line with these changes, studies into the integration of mobile phones into language learning contexts, particularly to facilitate vocabulary acquisition, have spawned. However, learners’ perceptions regarding the impact of the integration of mobile technologies are not fully explored. This study aims at discovering learners’ perceptions of mobile phone integration in translation classes. Twenty-seven learners studying at an English Language and Literature department in a north-western Turkish university were sent SMS text messages including the target words before, during and after the translation courses for 6 weeks. Nine students who were selected based on their frequency of response rate, 3 the most frequent respondents, 3 average respondents and the least 3 respondents respectively, were interviewed. A content analysis of the semi-structured interviews reveals information about the learners’ mobile telephone use and their perceptions of mobile phone use for language learning purposes. The findings reveal that learners in general hold a positive opinion of mobile phone integration although some hesitations have been voiced. A discussion of learners’ perspectives on the current and future use of mobile phones is provided.

The controversy about form focus versus content focus or lexicality versus textuality and the relevance of the respective chosen degree of contextualization of the teaching material for successful L2 vocabulary acquisition is still considered unresolved. While on the one hand Krashen with his input hypothesis (1985 ff.) and the work that followed him (e.g., Wu 2010, Yang 2011, Jergerski 2021, Lichtman/VanPatten 2021, Lowen 2021) advocate content-oriented vocabulary work, other researchers such as Laufer (et al. 2009, 2010, 2017a,b), Spada (2011), Shintani (2013), Yang/Shintani/Li/Zang (2017), Kang/Sok/Han (2019), Sima (2019), McLean/Stoeckel (2021), Soodmand (2021) and other representatives of modern language teaching research argue for paying much more attention to form-oriented vocabulary work. One of the main reasons for this divergence may be that many empirical studies only cover a small database of a few test vocabulary items in observation periods that are also very limited in time, which severely limits gene- ralizable statements from the outset. This paper addresses this problem and discusses the possibilities of a computer-based longitudinal analysis and optimization of the complex learning conditions of L2 lexicon acquisition. The focus is on the extent to which the contrast of context isolation versus context integration of lexical learning material influences learning efficiency and success. The empirical data collected in the pilot study presented here (based on more than 107,000 computerized lexical learning and reactivation records) and their systematic analysis demonstrate that the dependence of lexical learning and reactivation performance on the chosen degree of contextualization is apparently much lower than propagated by both representatives of the input hypothesis and proponents of form-focusing.

Gender is a key factor in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), where its impact on language learning strategies (Aslan, 2009; Oxford & Nyikos, 1989; Sumarni & Rachmawaty, 2019) and productive vocabulary (Canga Alonso & Arribas García, 2014; Fleckenstein, 2018; Jiménez Catalán & Moreno Espinosa, 2004) has been investigated. However, to our knowledge, there is a lack of research of gender on language learning strategies in relation to productive vocabulary in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The present study aimed to pursue three objectives. The first one was to ascertain whether males or females employed more language learning strategies. The second objective was to determine whether males or females had more productive vocabulary. Finally, the third objective was to investigate whether there was a statistically significant relationship between language learning strategies and productive vocabulary. The sample consisted of 51 EFL learners (20 males and 31 females) at the second year of Spanish non-compulsory Secondary Education (equivalent to 12th grade). The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire (Oxford, 1990) and the Productive Vocabulary Levels Test (PVLT) (Laufer & Nation, 1995, 1999) were the instruments employed in order to measure informants’ language learning strategies and productive vocabulary respectively. Afterwards, students’ answers were processed electronically and analyzed quantitatively. Results revealed that females use language learning strategies significantly more than males, but there were not statistically significant differences between them regarding productive vocabulary. Moreover, a positive correlation was found between language learning strategies and productive vocabulary.

Film audio description recounts the visual content of the film and it is primarily intended for the visually impaired audience. However, when used by sighted viewers, it provides an extra channel of communication which is reinforced by the simultaneous picture. Consequently, this combination of the visual input and language may facilitate the process of learning vocabulary in the second language (Paivio’s theory of dual-coding, Kress’ theory of multimodal teaching and learning). This paper presents the results of a pilot study investigating the effects of film audio description on incidental learning of English in sighted speakers of Polish. The aim of this pilot study was twofold: firstly, to verify if learning vocabulary in English can be enhanced by the use of film audio description and secondly, to test the research method. The study was carried out on a group of 120 learners of English. The participants were divided into four groups (two control groups and two experimental groups). The research instruments included: pre-tests, watching an excerpt of a film with audio description (experimental groups) and without audio description (control groups), repeated post-tests and oral performance (only in Control 2 and Experimental 2). Preliminary observations suggest that audio description may stimulate vocabulary learning in the second language, but there are still certain issues to be considered: the frequency of exposure to the audio described material, the type of the audio described material, the vocabulary type and size, and the number of participants.

This article is an attempt to draw readers’ attention on the role of borrowings from Roman languages in teaching Polish as a foreign language. Those borrowings are a large, but still underestimated group in lexical supply of Polish. Author has shown the results of her research concerning ability to recognize Roman borrowings among people learning Polish as a foreign language at basic level and her conclusions made from the research.

Watching media with subtitles at this time when streaming platforms have gone into our lives, have become a habit for a lot of people’s daily live. We consider this as an opportunity for students of Spanish to continue practicing the language once they are not in the classroom. These platforms provide subtitles in many languages and this tool might be helpful when studying a new one. Given that there is scarce data in this line of research, this study seeks to contribute to it by demonstrating that viewing media may improve de vocabulary acquisition (apart from other skills) and proving that subtitles may help in this process.

Learning word formation mechanisms (reception level) and acquiring the ability to use derivatives in communication (production level) is a vital issue for foreigners learning Polish, which lets them enlarge immensely their active and passive vocabulary. The derivative system partially belongs to grammar, and partially to lexis, and this fact should be reflected in the language teaching/learning process. In that process, however, it very often ‘belongs exclusively to grammar’. The author, invoking psycholinguistic research, claims that such a solution, though not thoroughly wrong, may result in a lower than achievable level of internalization of derivatives in Polish language learners’ mental vocabulary. An alternative solution, she suggests, is to link teaching of derivatives with particular subject topics.
