    As the number of people visiting national parks in Poland is constantly growing, it is important to recognise their varying motivations and preferences. This is particularly important in the most popular national parks, such as the National Park in the Karkonosze Mountains (KNP). KNP is visited by two millions tourists annually, which makes it the second most popular national park in Poland. The aim of study was to classify visitors of the national park in terms of their motivation to visit. Three main categories of visitors were identified: leisure seekers, nature lovers and active tourists. The category of leisure seekers was the largest and most diverse with respect to their preferences. Nature lovers knew a lot about the park, especially as regards its geodiversity and its fauna and flora. The number of active visitors keeps growing every year. Active tourism, especially in the KPN, requires advanced equipment and good physical fitness. The findings of the study tourism trends in mountain national parks and can provide insights for its management. The article ends with some predictions regarding future trends and changes in the classification of KPN visitors after the pandemic.

    The paper has employed a three-factor model of constraints, which differentiates intrapersonal, interpersonal and structural. The study was carried out on a sample of N = 981 adult residents of Poland. The three most common barriers constraining attendance at attractions were identified: availability, high entrance fees and lack of time. The constraints were found to be related to a number of socio-demographic characteristics, such as gender, age, education, size of place of residence and household income per capita. Three market segments limited by similar constraints and showing similar attraction attendance behaviour were identified with their socio-demographic characteristics.

The author will show both the overall changes in numbers of registered tourists during those 15 years, its distribution within the city in the last year, and the number and specificity of foreign arrivals (non-residents). Based on surveys in 2009-12, the author will discuss the structure of tourism in Łódź, taking into consideration one-day visitors and tourists, tourism consumption and distribution within the city space.

    Over the last dozen years or so, museums all over the world have changed dynamically in terms of their attitude towards their audience. Their attention is centred more and more around the viewers, and their needs have become the management’s priority. The word “viewer” no longer means the guest of a museum. The visitor becomes a participant in the museum’s activity, and even its co-creator. In Great Britain, projects based on the idea of the audience co-creating the museum programme are being conducted, for example the Tate Gallery, which has been running the Young Tate programme (later the Tate Collective) for young audiences since the mid-1990s. In the USA, the idea of participation in museums has been popularised by Nina Simon whose participation helped the Museum of Art and History in Santa Cruz. In Poland, practices involving visitors have successfully been used, for example, by the Museum of Art in Łódź, and on an unprecedented scale – the National Museum in Warsaw in their “Anything Goes” project curated by children. However, we know that not everything goes in a museum, and that each participatory action – irrespective of the flexibility of the scenario – needs to be kept in line. The aim of this article is to identify the significance of museum participation as defined by people who run museums, and to reflect upon the limits to the freedom of participants in a museum programme. The methodology comprises a comparative analysis of a selection of participatory actions chosen by various museums, as well as a survey carried out among those who run museums.
    Na przestrzeni minionych kilkunastu lat w muzeach na całym świecie obserwujemy dynamiczne zmiany w zakresie podejścia do muzealnej publiczności. W centrum zainteresowania coraz większej liczby muzeów staje widz, a spełnianie jego oczekiwań i potrzeb staje się priorytetem kadry zarządzającej. Słowo „widz” często przestaje też znaczyć tylko muzealnego gościa. Odwiedzający muzeum staje się bowiem uczestnikiem muzealnych aktywności, a nawet ich współtwórcą. W Wielkiej Brytanii projekty oparte na idei współtworzenia programu muzealnego przez publiczność realizowane są np. przez Galerię Tate, która od połowy lat 90. XX w. prowadzi program Young Tate (później Tate Collective) dla młodych odbiorców. W StanachZjednoczonych partycypację w muzeach propaguje Nina Simon, która w działalności partycypacyjnej znalazła ratunek dla Muzeum Sztuki i Historii w Santa Cruz. W Polsce po praktyki angażujące odbiorców z sukcesem sięga np. Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi, a ostatnio na nieporównywalną dotąd skalę – Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie w projekcie wystawy „W muzeum wszystko wolno”, której kuratorami były dzieci. Wiadomo jednak, że w muzeum nie wszystko jest dozwolone, a każda praktyka partycypacyjna – niezależnie od elastyczności scenariusza – zawsze musi pozostać w jego ryzach. Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja znaczeń przypisywanych muzealnej partycypacji przez osoby kierując muzeami oraz refleksja nad granicami wolności osób uczestniczących w muzealnym programie. Metodologia obejmie analizę porównawczą wybranych praktyk partycypacyjnych realizowanych przez muzea oraz ankietę przeprowadzoną wśród osób zarządzających muzeami.

    Objectives Geothermal waters may contain soluble, radioactive radon gas. Spa facilities that use geothermal water may be a source of an increased radiation dose to people who stay there. It has been necessary to assess the exposure to radon among people: workers and visitors of spa centers that use geothermal waters. Material and Methods In 2013, workers of the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine measured concentrations of radon over the geothermal water surfaces in 9 selected Polish spa centers which use geothermal water for recreational and medicinal purposes. The measurements were performed by active dosimetry using Lucas scintillation cells. Results According to our research, the doses received by the personnel in Polish geothermal spas are < 0.6 mSv/year. In 1 of the investigated spas, the estimated annual dose to the staff may exceed 3 mSv/year. Conclusions In Polish geothermal spas, neither the workers nor the visitors are at risk of receiving doses that exceed the safe limits.

    Museums are progressively using ICT to reinforce cultural and heritage tourism. Museums are vital in transmitting cultural values, propagating traditions, and linking current generations to their heritage. ICT has recently gained prominence for its ability to stimulate creative approaches. The use of ICT in museum operations is widespread, particularly in the areas of presentation and preservation. Museums, according to previous research, use a range of ICT tools to enhance the visitor experience (VX) through modernizing their exhibits and object interpretation. The purpose of this paper is to gain a better understanding of the VX as well as to evaluate the visitors' standpoint on ICT in museums. The research was applied to the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization. Two primary approaches were used, which include qualitative data such as literature reviews and interviews, as well as quantitative data as the main ways that employ questionnaires. Findings indicate that integrating technological tools can enrich the VX in museums by allowing for the usage of a variety of digital media types.

    Year by year the importance of interaction with native speakers while learning a foreign language becomes more significant. Contact situations have to be provided in Japanese language education, and various educational institutions incorporate “visitor sessions” into the foreign language acquisition process. At the University of Warsaw students have many opportunities to interact with native speakers in and out of classes, but the article is focused on a “visitor session” with an A-bomb legacy successor from Hiroshima. The practical report included in this article describes the significance of visitor sessions in the field of foreingn language acquisition. Moreover it presents the significance of such sessions through the perspective of the perception of the A-bomb survivors’ testimonies by describing how in Poland, a Central European country, Japanese language students of intermediate and upper level reacted to the talk by the A-bomb legacy successor from Hiroshima. The anasysis of the effects of a “visitor session” from the perspective of foreign language acquisition shows that besides the increase of vocabulary and improvement in top-down processing competence, the interaction with a native speaker awoke interest and desire for more knowledge about the discussed topic, as well as increased students’ motivation to learn. The questionnaire taken after the session shows a shift in the students’ awareness of the topic, from external interest in the reasons for which the bomb was dropped and its destructive force, to the lives of A-bomb survivors, influencing the internal processes of contemplating war, the human condition, and world peace.

    Tourism expenditures are an important indicator for measuring the impact of tourism on a destination. Information taken from the micro data of tourism expenditures, together with other socio-demographic characteristics of visitors, provides important data on the tourist demand for a destination. Visitor costs in combination with other variables can be used to profile the demand for tourist goods and services in the destination area. In this paper, the daily expenses of visitors in the Gjirokastra district of Albania are analysed. The Gjirokastra district is one of the more preferred regions and attracts a considerable number of domestic and foreign visitors, because it offers a diversity tourist attractions and services. For the purposes of this study, a survey of 200 visitors was conducted. The survey results were analysed with descriptive statistics via a cluster analysis. The survey provides detailed data on the daily expenses of visitors, divided into six main categories of a typical travel budget. Through the use of data mining cluster analysis, we identified and analysed the tourists’ daily expenses based on the purpose of their visit to the area of Gjirokaster.
    Wydatki na turystykę są ważnym wskaźnikiem pomiaru wpływu turystyki na destynację. Informacje o wydatkach na turystykę, wraz z innymi cechami społeczno-demograficznymi odwiedzających, dostarczają ważnych danych o popycie turystycznym na kierunki turystyczne. Koszty odwiedzających w połączeniu z innymi zmiennymi można wykorzystać do profilowania popytu na towary i usługi turystyczne w obszarze docelowym. W niniejszym artykule przeanalizowano dzienne wydatki odwiedzających albański okręg Gjirokastra. Okręg ten jest jednym z bardziej preferowanych regionów i przyciąga znaczną liczbę turystów krajowych i zagranicznych, ponieważ oferuje różnorodność atrakcji turystycznych i usług. Na potrzeby tego badania przeprowadzono ankietę wśród 200 odwiedzających. Wyniki ankiety zostały przeanalizowane za pomocą statystyk opisowych z wykorzystaniem analizy skupień. Ankieta dostarcza szczegółowych danych o dziennych wydatkach odwiedzających, podzielonych na sześć głównych kategorii typowego budżetu podróżnego. Dzięki wykorzystaniu analizy skupień zidentyfikowano i przeanalizowano dzienne wydatki turystów na podstawie celu ich wizyty w rejonie Gjirokastra.

    The objective of this research was to analyze selected psychographic features (motivations and benefits) of national parks’ visitors in order to determine the segments of visitors using k-means method. The characteristic of five visitor segments (relaxation, nature, integration, sightseeing and physical activity) points out the significant differences between them in terms of sociodemographic factors and behavioral variables related to the organization and course of the trip to the national park. The feedback on the preparation of the national park for tourism was also gathered.

    Contemporary Catholic shrines in addition to religious activities are also entities conducting business activities. It is required in those activities to read and produce value for the customer. Visitors to the pilgrimage centers expect from those who manage the shrines professional delivering of the derived benefits and costs born in the process of purchase and use of products and services. It has been proved by surveys undertaken in five Polish shrines which conduct wide business activities. The pilgrims accept the use of economic tools to manage the religious centre. However, the studies have shown that knowledge of the quality of business management is still not an important measure for choosing the shrine. The pilgrims, however, would like to have their donation well used by those who are in charge of the religious centre.

    Wstęp: W wodach geotermalnych znajduje się m.in. rozpuszczalny gaz - α-promieniotwórczy radon, który stanowi zagrożenie dla zdrowia człowieka, szczególnie po przedostaniu się do jego dróg oddechowych. Ośrodki SPA, które wykorzystują wody geotermalne, mogą stanowić źródło zwiększonej dawki promieniowania dla osób w nich przebywających. Celem pracy było oszacowanie dawek otrzymanych przez pracowników i kuracjuszy zażywających relaksu na podstawie informacji o stężeniu radonu dostępnych w publikacjach naukowych. Materiał i metody: Analizowano wartości stężeń radonu w 17 geotermalnych placówkach: 3 w Grecji, 5 w Iranie, 4 w Chinach i 5 w Indiach. Z wykorzystaniem zależności mówiącej, że 1-godzinna ekspozycja na stężenie radonu 1 Bq/m³ przy współczynniku równowagi F = 0,4 odpowiada dawce efektywnej 3,2 nSv, oszacowano dawki otrzymane przez ludzi przebywających w SPA. Wyniki: Stwierdzono, że poziom stężenia radonu w SPA jest od kilku do kilkunastu razy wyższy od stężenia w zamkniętych pomieszczeniach, np. w budynkach mieszkalnych, w których nie wykorzystuje się wód geotermalnych. W 82% analizowanych SPA istniało niebezpieczeństwo otrzymania przez pracownika dawki wyższej niż 1 mSv/rok, co zgodnie z polskim prawodawstwem kwalifikuje taką osobę do kategorii B narażenia radiacyjnego (m.in. do objęcia kontrolą dozymetryczną). Dawki pochłonięte przez kuracjuszy są dużo niższe ze względu na ich krótki czas przebywania w narażeniu na radon emitowany przez wody geotermalne. Wnioski: Analiza stężeń radonu w placówkach SPA pokazuje, że temat ochrony radiologicznej osób pracujących przy wodach geotermalnych jest istotny. Należałoby objąć takich pracowników geotermalnych kontrolą dozymetryczną. Med. Pr. 2013;64(2):193–198
    Background: Geothermal waters contain, among other components, soluble radon gas. Alpha radioactive radon is a health hazard to humans, especially when it gets into the respiratory tract. SPA facilities that use geothermal water can be a source of an increased radiation dose to people who stay there. Based on the available literature concerning radon concentrations, we assessed exposure to radon among people - workers and visitors of Spa centers that use geothermal waters. Material and Methods: Radon concentrations were analyzed in 17 geothermal centers: in Greece (3 centers), Iran (5), China (4) and India (5). Doses recived by people in the SPA were estimated using the formula that 1 hour exposure to 1 Bq/m³ of radon concentration and equilibrium factor F = 0.4 corresponds to an effective dose of 3.2 nSv. Results: We have found that radon levels in SPAs are from a few to several times higher than those in confined spaces, where geothermal waters are not used (e.g., residential buildings). In 82% of the analyzed SPAs, workers may receive doses above 1 mSv/year. According to the relevant Polish regulations, people receiving doses higher than 1 mSv/year are included in category B of radiation exposure and require regular dosimetric monitoring. Doses received by SPA visitors are much lower because the time of their exposure to radon released from geothermal water is rather short. Conclusions: The analysis of radon concentration in SPA facilities shows that the radiological protection of people working with geothermal waters plays an important role. It seems reasonable to include SPA workers staying close to geotermal waters into a dosimetric monitoring program. Med Pr 2013;64(2):193–198

    Opis:
    The subject of this article is the analysis of the activities conducted by the Archaeological Reserve in Kalisz-Zawodzie and its role in education and popularization of archaeology. It is based on the results of conducted quantitative and qualitative research surveys among visitors to the reserve and residents of Kalisz, including students of one of the primary schools, and interviews with experts. On their basis, the profile of visitors, the motivation they were guided by and their perception of the reserve and its offer were determined. In order to improve the image of the reserve and develop an appropriate offer, an original program and organizational concept for the discussed facility was created on the basis of the collected information.

    Opis:
    An unusual iconographic motif—a fringed piece of linen—depicted in the Chapel of Hatshepsut, part of the queen’s temple at Deir el-Bahari, is examined in this paper as an illustration of the interest, well attested in Hatshepsut’s reign, in past artistic models/sources. The Chapel of Hatshepsut was intended for the mortuary cult of the female pharaoh, while the motif under discussion appears to have been inspired by decoration earlier by 500 years, found inside a burial chamber cut into the rock cliff of North Asasif, which is a natural continuation of the Deir el-Bahari amphitheater. The tomb (TT 311) belonged to Khety, a courtier of the Eleventh Dynasty pharaoh Mentuhotep II Nebhepetra. Assuming the validity of this iconographic link, the question arises concerning the accessibility of decorated burial chambers from the Eleventh-Dynasty in this area and their possible role as “pattern books” in the design of the early Eighteenth Dynasty private and royal mortuary monuments. In addition, the paper addresses the issue of the Chapel of Hatshepsut serving as a monumental “pattern book” for the Late Period Theban tombs.

    Opis:
    An overview of literature on and state of knowledge of the application of user-centred design methodologies are discussed. Based on the experience with creating digital products and multi-media exhibitions, the Author claims that the role of users/visitor experience testing in the process of designing and implementing technological projects is of key importance. Using the example of the work on the new version of the multimedia display titled ‘Experiencing Chopin’ (2020) at Warsaw’s Fryderyk Chopin Museum, the paper discusses means of adaptation of the most popular research and evaluation techniques in usercentred testing in the museum context.
    Niniejszy artykuł stanowi przegląd literatury i stanu wiedzy w zakresie stosowania metodyk user-centered design w projektowaniu. Bazując na doświadczeniach tworzenia produktów cyfrowych oraz wystaw multimedialnych, w artykule przekonuję o kluczowej roli badań użytkowników/zwiedzających w procesie projektowania i wdrażania projektów technologicznych. Na przykładzie opracowywania w 2020 r. nowej odsłony ekspozycji multimedialnej pt. „Doświadczanie Chopina” w Muzeum Fryderyka Chopina w Warszawie, w artykule omówione zostały sposoby adaptacji najpopularniejszych technik badawczych i ewaluacyjnych stosowanych w badaniach użytkowników w kontekście muzealnym.

    Opis:
    The goal of this paper is to present a research method used during trade shows, which is commonly named as a mystery visitor, and in particular to identify its unique characteristics and the conditions under which correct results may be achieved. The authors used to one of the variants of participant observation, which is mystery visitor, as a research method. This method was used during the MAPIC – the world’s largest retail real estate business trade show. Mystery visitor method can be used to examine in detail various phenomena existing in exhibitors’ activities and to assess a general level of customer service during a particular trade show. The observation based on the mystery visitor method, carried out during trade shows, which is properly conducted can provide numerous benefits for both exhibitors and exhibition event organisers. The mystery visitor research method has not been presented in the marketing literature yet. This paper fill in the existing gap, in particular, by indicating characteristics of that method. The paper points out how to effectively use the mystery visitor method in practice in order to assess trade show performance.

    Opis:
    Konrad Prószyński (pseudonim: Kazimierz Promyk; 1851-1908) – samouk, wybitny działacz oświatowy, zainteresowany głównie szerzeniem oświaty wśród włościan. Był autorem wielu nowoczesnych elementarzy, w tym elementa-rza ściennego oraz uznanego za najlepszy na świecie w 1892 roku (spośród 500 elementarzy, nadesłanych na wystawę zorganizowaną przez Towarzystwo Pedago-giczne w Londynie), elementarza wydanego w 1887 roku pt. Obrazowa nauka czy-tania i pisania. Propagował wiedzę naukową, w tym szczególnie wiedzę rolniczą, w wydawanych przez siebie kalendarzach „Gość” (12 edycji, od 1881 roku) oraz tygodniku „Gazeta Świąteczna”, współredagowanym przez jego czytelników – często tych samych, którzy uczyli się czytać i pisać z jego elementarzy.
    Konrad Prószyński (a.k.a.: Kazimierz Promyk; 1851-1908) – a self-taught man, great educational activist, interested mainly in spreading education among peas-ants. He was the author of many modern reading primers, including a wall-mounted version, which was chosen as the best in the world in 1892 (from among 500 primers sent in to an exhibition organised by the Pedagogical Society in London), a primer published in 1887 entitled Picture-based learning of reading and writing. He pro-moted scientific knowledge, especially agricultural, in calendars published by himself called “The Visitor” [„Gość”] (12 editions, from 1881 onwards) and the weekly „Holiday Gazette” [“Gazeta Świąteczna”], co-authored by its readers, often ones who had learned to read and write from Prószyńki's primers.
