Opis:
Phagotrophic protist diversity in oligotrophic soils such as alpine glacier forefields is still poorly studied. Combining morphologic observations with molecular-based analyses, we assessed the diversity of major phagotrophic protist groups in two contrasting glacier forefields in the Swiss Alps (Tiefen glacier forefield, siliceous bedrock, and Wildstrubel glacier forefield, calcareous bedrock), at sites differing in soil development. Ciliates and heterotrophic flagellates could be detected with both approaches, while amoebae could be observed only microscopically. Soils from Tiefen and Wildstrubel glacier forefields harboured distinctly different ciliate, flagellate and amoebae communities. The ciliate clone libraries from the Tiefen glacier forefield were dominated by Oligohymenophorea-related sequences while those from the Wildstrubel glacier forefield were dominated by Spirotrichea-related sequences. Testate amoebae morphospecies of the genera Corythion, Cryptodifflugia, Euglypha and Tracheleuglypha were restricted to the Tiefen glacier forefield, while Centropyxis and Trinema to the Wildstrubel one. No ciliate sequences and only a few ciliate and testate amoebae morphospecies could be retrieved from unvegetated soils of both glacier forefields. The ciliate and testate amoebae community detected at unvegetated sites were a subset of the community developed at vegetated sites. Overall, our results suggest that alpine glacier forefields are colonised by a diverse community of phagotrophic protists which seems to be shaped by bedrock geology and vegetation cover.

Opis:
Road embankments, especially their slopes’ surfaces, must fulfil all the requirements concerning the exploitation criteria after the completion of construction works. This is very important while constructing or modernizing the embankments, based on the substrate including low-strength soils as well as in simple ground conditions (most convenient). The last dozen or so years of intensive construction of transport infrastructure have shown how big is the problem of ensuring the required volumes of qualified soil material for the construction of road embankments or the modernization of railway embankments. The depleting deposits of natural and easily accessible soils for the construction of embankments result in the need to use anthropogenic soils, for example, in the form of aggregates from the recycling of construction waste and other locally available waste materials, usually in the form of slag and ashes from the combined heat and power plants. In such cases, there’s a need to treat transportation earth structures individually in the scope of designing and quality control, because there are no applicable standard provisions in this scope. This work indicates some of these important contemporary problems of transport engineering, occurring in newly built and modernized road objects, such as the stability of road embankments based on a low-strength substrate, use of anthropogenic soils and materials originating from the recycling of concrete surfaces for the construction of road embankments.

For the purposes of this Issue Paper, metals most commonly found at Superfund sites will be discussed in terms of the processes affecting their behavior in soils, as well as in those of the laboratory methods available to evaluate this behavior. The retention capacity of soil will also be discussed with regard to the movement of metals between the other environmental compartments: ground water, surface water, or the atmosphere. Long-term changes in soil environmental conditions, due to the effects of remediation systems or to natural weathering processes, are also explained with respect to the enhanced mobility of metals in soils.

Opis:
This article discusses a study conducted in order to analyse selected Digital Terrain Model (DTM) derivates in  diverse young post-glacial topographic profiles  with the aim of identifying terrain features that could be related to the soils that formed there. The area under investigation is within the reach of the youngest Vistulian Glaciation, in the north-east of Poland. The main goal of the study was to reveal indirect relationships between a lithological soil type and terrain forms, which transpire from DTM derivatives. This can directly help to assign the type of soil in the area to one of the three soil types: a) made of sand, b) made of loam, c) wet-soils. The starting point for the research undertaken was the landscape approach to soil modelling and the article deals with medium scales. Derivatives were analysed using vector data notation, focusing on selected derivative values and their spatial location in relation to one another. The results obtained indicate the possibility of using this approach as an auxiliary approach in soil mapping of areas for which the quality of source materials (such as precipitation geometry) is low. Thus, they can be of assistance in improving the existing soil maps of selected scales. The trend revealed in the obtained results of DTM analysis can be considered as a contribution to realisation of assumptions of a study in digital soil mapping with the use of selected methods of AI.

Opis:
Analiza specjacyjna wykazała najwiekszą zawartość Zn w formie związanej z krystalicznymi tlenkami żelaza (frakcja VI), a najniższą we frakcji I i II, tj. w formach wodnorozpuszczalnych i wymiennych.

The main issue of the paper is the estimation of soil hydraulic permeability based on the DMT test. DMTA, DMTC and SASK methods performed in the Nielisz dam, Stegny and the SGGW Campus of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences sites are described. The article presents the implementation of the dilatometer Marchetti test (DMT) in the determination of soil fraction and effects of its occurrence in the subsoil, tested in the Nielisz dam located in the Wieprz river valley in the Lublin province, and in various sites in Warsaw (Stegny site and SGGW Campus of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences). In order to acquire the needed data, the flat dilatometer test (DMT) method was used. A direct and indirect pressure methodology of interpreting soil swelling was characterized in the article. The paper shows the possibilities of determining sand, silt and clay soil fractions based on po and p1 pressures from dilatometer tests (DMT) and the effective (σ’vo) and total (σvo) vertical in situ overburden stress. Additionally, the main advantage of this paper is the proposal of use of a new chart to determine hydraulic permeability and soil fraction, based on DMT tests.

The exposure of heavy metals in the Drenas site – Kosovo has risen dramatically in the last 30 years because of mining and smelting activities. The study investigated the heavy metal in soil, accumulation in different parts of apple trees near the industrial sites of Drenas. The accumulation ratio values of heavy metals were calculated to assess the potential health risks. The mean concentrations of the heavy metals in the soil were in the following order of magnitude Ni > Zn > Fe > Cr > Cu > Pb > Cd > As, while that in the apples were in the order of magnitude Ni > Cr > Fe > Cu > Pb > Zn > Cd > As, in the leaves – Fe > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd > As and in the shoots – Zn > Fe > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd > As. Compared to control, the contents of analyzed metals from plant tissues of apple trees in the contaminated area were significantly higher (p<0.001). The concentration of Ni, Pb, Cr, Fe etc. in the apple tissue increased along with the heavy metal content in soils in the polluted area. The high accumulation ratio values for Pb (1.1), Cd (0.62), Cr (0.93) and Ni (0.46) were characteristic for the investigated species and indicate the accumulation ability.

Opis:
The present research was carried out with the main aim to evaluate the levels of heavy metals in some contaminated or expected to be contaminated by industrial effluents and some non contaminated soils of district Swabi. A total of 30 soil samples were collected from 15 different selected soil series of Swabi area at 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm depths and analyzed for various chemical properties using standard analytical techniques and for extractable heavy metals Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Co, Ni, Cd and Pb using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. All soil samples were found non saline having EC values between 0.13-0.56 dsm-1. Soil reaction or pH value ranged from 7.21-8.60 except Mansabdar soil which had pH value of 9.21. It was found that swabi soil was moderately to strongly calcareous in nature, alkaline in reaction having deficient to marginal in organic matter content. Furthermore all soil samples were found almost adequate in Fe, Cu and Zn for most of agriculture crops. The higher concentrations of Ni (22.21 and 21.9 mg kg-1) and Cr (8.02 and 5.11 mg kg-1) at both surface and sub surface were recorded in Gadoom Amazai soils located near ghee mills and many other industries. Higher levels of heavy metals were observed in contaminated soils as compared with non contaminated soils. Decreased in concentration levels of metals were observed in majority of soils with increase in depth. No correlation was found between AB-DTPA extractable heavy metals and soil chemical properties and it might be due to samples collected from different locations with different thermodynamic characteristics.

Opis:
In soils, where the water table is deeply located and has a minor impact on the moisture content of the surface layer, we are dealing with the precipitation-and-water type of water management. If underground water level is close to the surface, the top stratum of the soil, apart from precipitation, is additionally fed by water absorption from underground waters. Then we are dealing with ground-and-water type of manage-ment. We consider such types of water management of soil in the area of the left-bank valley of the Odra river, above and below the dam in Brzeg Dolny. The dominant soil types here are middle fen soils, based on middle clay and heavy clay as well as loam, which, in conditions of either excess or deficiency of moisture, are difficult to cultivate. The work compares water management of two soil profiles in vegetation periods between 2004 and 2009. The formation of underground waters, meteorologi-cal conditions and the course of the water reserves in the strata 0–50 cm and 0–100 cm were estimated with various supplying conditions of the active stratum of the soil. The volume of the supply with percolated water from underground water of the layer 50–100 cm on approximately 75–90 mm was also estimated. This value was mainly dependent on the depth of the retention of the water table of the soil profile above the level in Brzeg Dolny.

The sewage treatment facility of a paper mill at Konstancin-Jeziorna was opened to process industrial and domestic wastewater. After closure of that mill, the sewage treatment facility had to be rebuilt and modernized. Therefore, it was necessary to analyse the chemical and phase composition of the sediments from facultative lagoons used for biological treatment of wastewater. Eight samples of sediments were taken to identify a general phase composition by X-ray diffraction and ten to determine concentrations of selected main and trace elements with the use of ICP-AES and AMA methods. The analyses showed that the sediments consisted of over 90% of mineral fraction, mainly kaolinite, calcite, and quartz and also neomorphic smithsonite. They contained low quantities of Hg, Cd, Co and Mo, and elevated concentrations of Zn, Ba, Mn and Sr. Comparisons of the obtained mean values with admissible concentrations of metals, as defined by Regulation of the Minister of Environment of 9 September 2002, showed that the mean concentrations of As, Sn, Co, Mo and Ni (and also of Hg and Cr in the southern lagoon) met quality standards for soils in areas under protection (group A). Mean concentrations of Pb (both lagoons), Ba, Cu, Cd (northern lagoon) as well as Cr and Hg (southern lagoon) in sediments are higher. However, they still meet standards for areas usable for agricultural and other purposes (group B). The highest concentrations were recorded for Zn, Cd, Cu and Ba in samples from the southern lagoon. These continued to be lower than all the limits acceptable for industrial areas.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of geotechnical parameters of the alluvial deposit (the areas of the Vistula and Warta river valleys) with a view to using the soil as an earth construction material and as a foundation for buildings constructed on the grounds tested. Strength and deformation parameters of the subsoil tested were identified by the CPTU (cone penetration test) and DMT (flat dilatometer test) methods, as well as by the vane test (VT). The article includes the analysis of overconsolidation process of the soil tested and a formula for the identification of the overconsolidation ratio OCR. Equation 4 reflects the relation between the undrained shear strength and plasticity of the silts analyzed and the OCR value. The analysis resulted in the determination of the Nkt coefficient, which might be used to identify the undrained shear strength of both sediments tested. On the basis of a detailed analysis of changes in terms of the constrained oedometric modulus M0, the relations between the said modulus, the liquidity index and the OCR value were identified. Mayne’s formula (1995) was used to determine the M0 modulus from the CPTU test. The usefulness of the alluvial deposit as an earth construction material was analysed after their structure had been destroyed and compacted with a Proctor apparatus. In cases of samples characterized by different water content and soil particle density, the analysis of changes in terms of cohesion and the internal friction angle proved that these parameters are influenced by the soil phase composition. On the basis of the tests, it was concluded that the most desirable shear strength parameters are achieved when the silt is compacted below the optimum water content.

Results of investigations of shearing resistance and compressibility of fine-grained cohesive soil from the southern part of the wielkopolskie voivodeship in relation to the increasing moisture content are presented. The analysis of two series of samples, using soil paste for the consistency index of 0.9 and 0.4–0.3 was carried out. The results imply that the increasing moisture content causes a decrease in the angle of shearing resistance and cohesion and is also reflected in the higher compressibility of the soil. It was observed that regardless of the soil consistency, the angle of shearing resistance decreases and the cohesion value and the oedometric modulus of primary (consolidation) and secondary compressibility grows with the increase in the clay fraction.

The efficient use of water is increasingly important and proper soil management, within the specificities of each region of the country, allows achieving greater efficiency. The South and Caparaó regions of Espírito Santo, Brazil are characterized by relief of ‘hill seas’ with differences in the degree of pasture degradation due to sun exposure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the least limiting water range in Udox soil under degraded pastures with two faces of exposure to the sun and three pedoenvironments. In each pedoenvironment, namely Alegre, Celina, and Café, two areas were selected, one with exposure on the North/West face and the other on the South/East face. In each of these areas, undisturbed soil samples were collected at 0-10 cm depth to determine the least limiting water range. The exposed face of the pasture that received the highest solar incidence (North/West) presented the lowest values in least limiting water range. The least limiting water range proved to be a physical quality indicator for Udox soil under degraded pastures.

The study was carried out on 16 selected model soil profiles, located on lands covered with soils exhibiting vertic properties in Thrace Region of Turkey. Different horizons and/or sub-horizons of 16 characteristic soil profiles were evaluated in field or laboratory conditions in terms of water holding capacity and water types properties. Total of 105 soil samples were analyzed for routine physical characteristics. Soil water holding capacity was determined applying negative potentials (Ψ) of -0.33 bar, -15.5 bar and -31.5 bar (pF 2.54; 4.2 and 4.5), using a pressure-membrane extraction apparatus. In addition to gravitational, available, unavailable and hygroscopic soil water types, the soil samples were investigated also in terms of crystal-lattice water content. The highest amounts of the listed water types were determined in soils of Büyük Mandira, Türkgeldi and Seymen containing the highest rates of smectite clay mineral. The mass percentage (Pw) rates of the mentioned water types of the investigated profies varied in the ranges of 29.1–66.3%, 10–2.15%, 22.0–32.4%, 6.0–9.0% and 5.6–8.6%, respectively. Though the mass percentages of enumerated water types in the soils of Osmanli and Yeni Mahalle, all owning high sand and lower clay content on the other hand, are between 28.9–40.6%, 6.1–15.5%, 7.4–16.8%, 2.4–4.8% and 1.7–4.4%, respectively.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of a fi eld study on using mineral materials (fine-grained sand and medium- -grained gravel) to reduce the concentration of readily soluble salts in a roadside environment. The investigated soils were Rendzic Sceletic Leptosols from an urban area characterized by a shallow humus horizon with a high content of skeletal parts, as well as a lack of homogeneity of the material in the soil profile. All soil samples were taken from five plots located along the main streets in the city of Opole (Southern Poland). It was revealed that the use of fine-grained sand and medium-grained gravel improved the structure of the surface soil layer, and thus favoured the migration of Na+ and Cl- ions into the soil profile. In comparison to control surfaces readily soluble salts were reduced with gravel and sand application. Furthermore, the mineral materials introduced on the soil surface for salinity neutralization did not affect the quality of the tested roadside calcareous soils. The results indicate that the use of mineral materials reduces soil salinity caused by NaCl. They also show the need to find new methods of salt neutralization, especially of roadside soils in order to improve and protect the quality of the environment.

Opis:
This paper reviews the classifications of organic soils as applied in different countries, with particular attention drawn to those based on international and European norms. These norms propose the distinction of four groups of organic soils: peats (fibrous, pseudo-fibrous, and amorphous), gyttja and humic soils, which may be further divided into sub-groups. Organic soils are included within poor soils, because of their considerable susceptibility in relation to water, which causes their high compressibility, low strength and high shrinkage. Existing regional and international norms and plans appear not to characterise these soils sufficiently. The classification proposed in this paper will allow determination of the relationships between particular engineering geological parameters, which, to a large degree, will help planning of such objects as embankments or melioration structures. This is, however, possible only within particular genetic types. Organic soils developed in different conditions differ not only in organic matter content, but also in their chemical and physico-chemical character (i.e. degree of carbonisation, relation of humic acids to fulvic acids, bitumen content, degree of coagulation and decomposition of organicmatter). The evaluation of organic soils requires firstly the determination of their origin, and then each genetic group should be subdivided based on the content of organic matter. The relationships between the physical, physico-chemical and mechanical properties should be then determined within these groups.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine soils pollution by heavy metals (Zn, Cu and Cr) and their content in pine needles taken from terrain of Krakow Agglomeration. It was found large changeability of individual trace metals content in analyzed plants and soils material. The metals content in soils amounted to: 12.64–631.9 mg Zn, 1.24–35.06 mg Cu and 2.39–158.9 mg Cr kg–1 dm. The average content of zinc, copper and chromium in soil samples from the city of Krakow terrain was visibly higher than in the analogous material taken from neighboring localities. Variation coefficients of individual trace elements content were: 102.8 % for Cr, 72 % for Zn and 54.2 % for Cu. The highest amounts of analyzed heavy metals was found in soils from places of Krakow Agglomeration located in zones of large intensity of road traffics and in Old Town where the influence of anthropopressure lasts the longest. High their contents were observed also in soil samples taken from the periphery of Krakow and in localities with dense one-family buildings situated along the main traffic routes. The relatively low content of these metals in soils were observed in multifamily dwelling housing estates and in smaller villages from the periphery of the Agglomeration. On average, the most pollution of studied soils with Cu and Zn was found in the eastern part of the Agglomeration, while the lowest in western one. The highest average Cr content was observed in the soil samples taken from northern part of the Krakow Agglomeration while the lowest in southern part. Contents of zinc and copper in soil were significant positively correlated with organic matter content in soil. The average contents of analyzed trace metals in pine needles taken from the city of Krakow terrain and from neighboring localities were differed slightly. The average content of these metals in pine needles from the Agglomeration terrain amounted to: 55.45 mg Zn, 4.76 mg Cu and 2.54 mg Cr kg–1 d.m. Individual metals content in plant was differentiated in diverse extent. The largest variation was found in case of Cr (V = 40 %), lower for Zn (V = 30.8 %), and the lowest in case of Cu (26.4 %). The highest average analyzed heavy metals content was found in needles of pine grown in southern part of the Krakow Agglomeration. The smallest Cu and Cr contents were observed in needles taken from the trees grown in northern part of the city and neighboring localities, while the smallest Zn content was noted in samples from the northern part of the Krakow Agglomeration. Obtained results did not prove a substantial correlation between heavy metals content in soil and in pine needles, what points at origin of Zn, Cu and Cr from deposition from the atmosphere. The bioaccumulation coefficients of analyzed elements had higher values in case of samples taken from countryside than those taken from city Krakow terrain.
Stwierdzono duże zróżnicowanie zawartooeci poszczególnych metali oeladowych w analizowanym materiale glebowym i rooelinnym. Gleby zawierały: 12,64–631,88 mg Zn, 1,24–38 mg Cu oraz 2,39–158,9 mg Cr kg–1 s.m. OErednie zawartooeci cynku, miedzi i chromu w próbkach glebowych z terenu miasta Krakowa były wyższe niż w analogicznym materiale pobranym z okolicznych miejscowooeci. Średnio największe zanieczyszczenie badanych gleb Zn i Cu stwierdzono we wschodniej częoeci aglomeracji, a najmniejsze w częoeci zachodniej. Największą średnią zawartością Cr odznaczały się gleby z północnej, a najmniejszą z południowej częoeci aglomeracji krakowskiej. Zawartość cynku i miedzi w glebie były istotnie dodatnio skorelowane z zawartością materii organicznej. Przeciętna zawartość tych metali w igliwiu sosen rosnących na terenie aglomeracji wyniosła: 55,45 mg Zn, 4,76 mg Cu i 2,54 mg Cr kg–1 s.m. Zawartości poszczególnych metali ciężkich były zróżnicowane w niejednakowym stopniu. Największą zmienność stwierdzono w przypadku Cr (V = 40 %), następnie Zn (V = 30,8 %), a najmniejszą w przypadku Cu (26,4 %). Średnio najwięcej wszystkich analizowanych metali stwierdzono w szpilkach sosen rosnących w południowej części aglomeracji krakowskiej. Najmniej Cu i Cr zawierały igły pobrane z drzew z północnej części miasta oraz z graniczących z nią miejscowości, natomiast najmniejszą zawartość Zn zanotowano w próbkach pobranych w północnej części aglomeracji.

Potassium (K) response curves were generated for some Malawi soils using four different rates of potassium fertilizer, with grass being used to estimate plant availability. The study was conducted to find the point of maximum response for potassium. The soils were characterized, limed and fertilized with equal amounts of nitrogen. Potassium was applied at four rates: 0.0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 me K/100 cm3 soil. The K treated soils were put in pots and cropped with grass. The grass was harvested six weeks after planting, dried and weighed. In general, addition of potassium resulted in increased growth of grass in all soils, with some soils showing better response than others. For montmorillonitic soils and soils with mixed mineralogy response was linear up to the highest rate of 0.4 me K/100 cm3. Apparently the 0.4 me K/100 cm3 soil was not enough to give maximum yield for these potassium depleted soils. For the kaolinitic soils 0.4 me K/100 cm3 soil was beyond point of maximum response. The variation of response to added potassium in the different soils calls for soil specific fertilizer additions. Smallholder farmers should move from blanket (crop specific) fertilizer recommendations currently being used to crop and soil specific fertilizer recommendations. Basal fertilizer dressings (starter packs) should always contain potassium. Correlation and calibration studies should be conducted to establish a potassium low optimum level for Malawi soils.

A basic set of experiments for the determination of mechanical properties of sands is described. This includes the determination of basic physical and mechanical properties, as conventionally applied in soil mechanics, as well as some additional experiments, which provide further information on mechanical properties of granular soils. These additional experiments allow for determination of steady state and instability lines, stress-strain relations for isotropic loading and pure shearing, and simple cyclic shearing tests. Unconventional oedometric experiments are also presented. Necessary laboratory equipment is described, which includes a triaxial apparatus equipped with local strain gauges, an oedometer capable of measuring lateral stresses and a simple cyclic shearing apparatus. The above experiments provide additional information on soil’s properties, which is useful in studying the following phenomena: pre-failure deformations of sand including cyclic loading compaction, pore-pressure generation and liquefaction, both static and caused by cyclic loadings, the effect of sand initial anisotropy and various instabilities. An important feature of the experiments described is that they make it possible to determine the initial state of sand, defined as either contractive or dilative. Experimental results for the “Gdynia” model sand are shown.

The volume of each analysed soil sample was 3.93 cm3 and was similar to the volume and the size of the magnetic susceptibility standard. The research was carried out for 10 soil samples with a magnetic susceptibility range varying from 20 to 1600x10-8 m3 kg-1. The soil samples contained technogenic magnetic particles and particles of natural magnetite of geogenic origin. The study was performed for a field of 2 mT.

The aim of this study was to estimate the content of trace elements (Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb) in soils and consumer plants grown under and without the influence of traffic. The species such as lettuce, raspberry, beetroot, apple, carrot, chives and onion were selected for the study. The samples were mineralized and the heavy metal content in plants and soils was determined by means of atomic absorption spectrometry. The content of heavy metals in the soil from municipal allotments was higher than in the soil from the Saniki Colony. For both samples, the permissible soil content was not exceeded. The amount of trace elements in plants varied depending on species, but the place of vegetables and fruits origin was also important. Most of trace elements occurred in larger amounts in the plants from allotments, and in smaller amounts in the plants from Saniki Colony.

A compaction theory is applied to description of stress wave propagation through saturated sands, including such associated phenomena as pore pressure generation and liquefaction. Numerical examples show that liquefaction is possible during either loading or unloading, depending on the magnitude of applied stress and mechanical properties of saturated sand. It is shown that the stress wave propagates without change of shapes but produces regrouping of the intrinsic stresses in matrix and fluid, i.e. generating excess pore pressure and reducing mean effective pressure, which leads to liquefaction. Those effects are caused by permanent porosity changes due to rearrangement of the granular structure of the sand, and pore water compressibility.
Przedstawiono zastosowanie teorii zagęszczania do opisu propagacji jednowymiarowej fali upłynnienia w nawodnionych piaskach. Zjawisko to prowadzi do upłynnienia nawodnionego gruntu.

Heavy metals and antibiotics resistance are intense public interest owing to their pollution in the environment and potential deleterious effects on human health. A total of 15 isolates of Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli (50 manure garden soils) were tested for their resistance against certain heavy metals and antibiotics. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of Pb²⁺, Co²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Zn²⁺ for each isolate were also determined. B. subtilis, B. cereus, P. aeruginosa and E. coli exhibited high tolerance to minimum inhibitory concentrations of 3,200 μg/ml for Pb²⁺, 400 μg/ml for Cu²⁺ and Co²⁺, and 100 μg/ml for Zn²⁺ in agar plates. All the isolates were highly resistant to lead and they showed 100% growth in 3,200 μg/ml concentration. It was observed that all isolates were resistant to a wide range of antibiotics namely clindamycin, ceftazidime, aztreonam and vancomycin.

The results of the low-background gamma spectrometric measurements of protected mountain areas (Zacharovanyy Kray, Chorne Bahno, Ihthyological Preserve Rika and Uzhanskij National Natural Park) in the region of Primeval Beech Forests of the Transcarpathia, Ukraine, are presented. The distances between sampling points in a single protected area were in the range of 200–400 m in elevation of 300 m; probes were taken from the surface, from depth 20 cm and more than 50 cm. The proposed sampling scheme allows one to investigate the radionuclide concentration in protected area’s soils, their distribution on/near the mountain ridges and migration in depth (0–50 cm). We also investigate the infl uence the soils’ pH on the contents and the migration of nuclides. The obtained data allow us to study the statistical regularities between the sampling points along and down mountain ridges on the base of their radionuclide content. These results are important for evaluating the radon content/distribution and developing standards in the radionuclide content of the soil Carpathian region.

Opis:
In Poland, the production of electricity and thermal energy is based mainly on hard and brown coal burning. It causes great amount of furnace waste, including ash-slag mixtures from wet deposition of waste. According to GUS data in 2010 9 million tons of waste were produced and 253.7 million tons are still on landfills being a burden to the environment. One of possible ways of their usage is earthworks, where ash-slag mixtures are allowed to use in low layers of road embankments, under the condition that they will be built in places that are dry or isolated from water. This restriction is a result of high sensitivity of furnace waste for changes in moisture content as well as their high susceptibility to filtration deformations. There fore it is crucial to determine strength characteristics of this type of materials depending on their moisture content. The purpose of the paper was to determine the influence of moisture content of ash-slag mixture from “Skawina” Power Plant on its shear strength parameters as well as to determine stability of embankments formed from this type of material. Within the scope of laboratory tests, basic geotechnical parameters as well as shear strength parameters and permeability of ash-slag mixture were determined. Shear strength tests were carried out in the standard direct shear box apparatus at the compaction indexes IS = 0.90, 0.95 and 1.00. The moisture content was close to optimal and 5% lower or higher than the optimal moisture content. Permeability tests were carried out with the constant hydraulic gradient on samples at the compaction indexes Is = 0.90 and 1.00. Based on obtained results it was stated that ash-slag mixture from “Skawina” Power Plant has high shear strength parameters and relatively high values of permeability coefficient, although values of these parameters greatly depend on mixture compaction. Additionally shear strength tests showed that the moisture content has a great influence on shear strength parameters. Depending on these tests results and using proposal of calculative model by Matsushi-Matsukury effective strength parameters of the mixture were estimated. Comparing calculations results with parameters obtained from the triaxial shear tests it was stated that the proposed model gives safe values of effective strength parameters so they were used for stability calculations for a model road embankment, which was exposed to heavy rainfall. Infiltration calculations were carried out assuming daily intensity of rainfall on 100 mm/day, which corresponds with 1% probability of rainfall for the Kraków area. These calculations showed, that high permeability of the mixture has a significant influence on the range of changes in the slopes moisture content and the accepted rainfall density was insufficient to saturate this material when there is a free water flow in the embankment’s body. This process can occur only in case of the embankment formed from the mixture on the ground that has lower permeability than the mixture. Calculation results showed that embankment formed from the mixture at high compaction had a high value of safety factor, which indicates that the ash-slag mixture can be a valuable substitute for natural soils.

The carried out research indicated considerable influence of communication-generated pollution, with simultaneous influence of other local emission sources. The relation of magnetic anomalies was indicated, which may be the result of ferromagnetic materials aggregation, originating mainly from combustion processes. The road structure, including the surface condition, the main construction material and susceptibility of the surface to cracking are equally important when considering the magnetic increase. A considerable variation of magnetic measurements in different season was pointed out; however, the largest median values of magnetic susceptibility were recorded in the summer season.

Degradation of pastures caused by anthropogenic and climatic factors leads to desertification, loss of soil fertility, reduces productivity of the pasture grass and it is a prerequisite for socio-economic problems. Pastures of Western Kazakhstan cover more than 70% of the lands under economic use and are the main fodder source for the farm animals. In the late years, degradation of pastures in Western Kazakhstan takes place due to intensive animal grazing. The aim of research is to study the impact of technology for grazing the farm animals on the pastures soil cover to prevent the processes of degradation and desertification, as well as the rational use of pasture ecosystems. Through these studies, experimental data were obtained on the current state of the pastures soil cover in Western Kazakhstan with different types of chestnut soils depending on the grazing technology. An excess intensive grazing of the farm animals has negative influence on physical and chemical factors of the chestnut soil types.

Soil is one of the most important elements of the natural environment, it is characterized by the highest resistance to degradation. It is the first element in the trophic chain and may have different effects on the health condition of people, primarily through the consumption of plant raw materials. One of the effects of soil contamination is the formation of excess free radicals in cells, which leads to oxidative stress. Free radicals contribute to the damage of lipids, proteins, mitochondrial and nuclear DNA and also to disorders in the signalling pathways responsible for the broad spectrum of cellular responses. The result of this is the emergence of many diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disorders, osteoporosis, inflammation, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease. However, it is possible for people to protect themselves from the excess of free radicals found in soils and cultivate plants in the best quality soils. The best way to assess soil quality is to determine its total antioxidant capacity using the different methods available (FRAP method, CUPRAC method, FOLIN-CIOCALTE method, ABTS+ method, DPPH+ method). Such designations make it possible to assess the soil in terms of its suitability for the production of high-quality food or the possible need for reclamation. It should be noted that soil quality may be improved by adding antioxidant compounds to it, which in turn will increase the amount of antioxidants in agricultural raw materials. One of the ways to achieve this is balanced fertilization, especially organic, but also mineral.

Introduction. Mercury release in the environment is mainly the result of human activity, particularly from coal-fired power stations, residential heating systems, waste incinerators, and as a result of mining for mercury, gold and other metals, which have led to widespread global mercury pollution. Excessive exposure to mercury is associated with a wide range of adverse health effects, including damage to the central nervous system, digestive and immune systems, and to lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes. Objective. The main aim of the study is to summarize the selected mercury sources in the environment of the Slovak Republic, regarding waste incinerators, landfill waste, crematoria, chemical plants, rivers and soils. Brief description of state of knowledge. Although the neurologic symptoms of Minamata disease were identified sufficiently for specialists to classify mercury as the causative agent, the acceptance of mercury ́s environmental impacts will require several decades of research. Several new issues have arisen – the need for energy conservation leads to the use of fluorescent lighting, which contain mercury; emissions driven by increases in coal combustion, incineration and economic development have sent more mercury into the air, soil and water. Conclusions. Mercury is toxic to human health, posing a particular threat to the development of the child in utero and early in life. The systematic analytical controls of contaminants in water, soil and air are important. The installation of modern cleaning technologies to comply with the maximum emission level can substantially minimized the environmental impact of incinerators. Since human cremation is also an increasing practice, further research on mercury emissions is necessary.

Introduction and Objective. Contamination of soil by mercury poses several risks to human health through consumption of fruits and vegetables. In Slovakia, a high concentration of mercury is found in the soil of the Central Spiš region. The objective of the study is to measure the mercury concentrations in the parts of selected plant species and trees growing within 100 meters of a former ore processing facility. Materials and Method. A total of 24 samples of plants, 20 samples of parts of needle-leaved trees and 9 samples of parts of broad-leaved trees were collected from soils with a high concentration of mercury. The concentration was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry in different parts of the plants: leaves – 18 species, roots – 15 species, stems – 11 species, flowers – 7 species), and different parts of trees (crust – 8 species, branches – 8 species, needles – 5 species, cones – 5 species, leaves – 3 species). Results. The concentrations of mercury in the soils taken at a depth of 0.25 m exceeded the maximum allowed levels more than 50-times. Potatoes, parsley and carrots from these soils exceeded the maximum allowed mercury levels 6-times, 5-times and twice, respectively. The average concentrations of mercury in the roots of 2-year onions exceeded the limit more than 50-times. The flowers of cornflower contain 18.20 mg. kg-1, leaves of dandelion 10.61 mg. kg-1 and roots of plantain 6.80 mg. kg-1 of mercury. Regarding trees, the highest concentrations were found in the branches of juniper and leaves of aspen – more than 1 mg. kg-1. Conclusions. The systematic monitoring of mercury is still very important, since it was found that the end of ore processing does not solve the issue of contamination in the Central Spiš region. Therefore, the consumption of fruits and vegetables from the areas of former ore processing facilities is not recommended.

The construction of embankments on organic soils is associated with necessary to improve subsoil conditions. Soft organic soils are often highly compressible and have low shear strengths, what causes large deformation, both vertically as well as horizontally, that may occur during and after the construction period [11]. The settlements usually appear quickly but can also continue for a very long time because of the secondary compression [6]. However, in Poland there are large areas with soft organic soils where diff erent kinds of embankments have to be constructed. In these cases, the prediction of soil behavior and the selection of a proper design method becomes an important and complex engineering task. In this paper the analysis of the soft subsoil deformation process under load is presented. The main factors that determine the consolidation of soft subsoil are described, as well as the proposition of changes in organic soils properties for better prediction of the construction’s settlements. Based on fi eld observations and laboratory test results, the characterization of organic soft soils and the results the calculation procedure are proposed.

Opis:
The article concentrates on the identification of geotechnical parameters of alluvial soil represented by silts found near Poznań and Elbląg. Strength and deformation parameters of the subsoil tested were identified by the CPTU (static penetration) and SDMT (dilatometric) methods, as well as by the vane test (VT). Geotechnical parameters of the subsoil were analysed with a view to using the soil as an earth construction material and as a foundation for buildings constructed on the grounds tested. The article includes an analysis of the overconsolidation process of the soil tested and a formula for the identification of the overconsolidation ratio OCR. Equation 9 reflects the relation between the undrained shear strength and plasticity of the silts analyzed and the OCR value. The usefullness of the sediments found near Poznań as an earth construction material was analysed after their structure had been destroyed and compacted with a Proctor apparatus. In cases of samples characterised by different water content and soil particle density, the analysis of changes in terms of cohesion and the internal friction angle proved that these parameters are influenced by the soil phase composition (Fig. 18 and 19). On the basis of the tests, it was concluded that the most desirable shear strength parameters are achieved when the silt is compacted below the optimum water content.

A simple model describing pre-failure deformations of granular soils is derived on the basis of a wide range of experimental data. The model is defined by two incremental equations describing the volumetric and deviatoric strains. Functions appearing in governing equations were determined from experiments performed in the triaxial apparatus, with additional measurements of lateral strains for some simple stress paths. These functions are different for loading and unloading, and have different shapes for contractive and dilative soil samples. The instability line is built into the structure of the model. The incremental equations were applied to predict the soil behaviour during anisotropic compression, including determination of the K0-line. Some basic statistical characteristics of the initial density index of investigated soils and deformations during isotropic compression are presented.

Theoretical analysis of shaking table experiments, simulating earthquake response of a dry sand layer, is presented. The aim of such experiments is to study seismic-induced compaction of soil and resulting settlements. In order to determine the soil compaction, the cyclic stresses and strains should be calculated first. These stresses are caused by the cyclic horizontal acceleration at the base of soil layer, so it is important to determine the stress field as function of the base acceleration. It is particularly important for a proper interpretation of shaking table tests, where the base acceleration is controlled but the stresses are hard to measure, and they can only be deduced. Preliminary experiments have shown that small accelerations do not lead to essential settlements, whilst large accelerations cause some phenomena typical for limit states, including a visible appearance of slip lines. All these problems should be well understood for rational planning of experiments. The analysis of these problems is presented in this paper. First, some heuristic considerations about the dynamics of experimental system are presented. Then, the analysis of boundary conditions, expressed as resultants of respective stresses is shown. A particular form of boundary conditions has been chosen, which satisfies the macroscopic boundary conditions and the equilibrium equations. Then, some considerations are presented in order to obtain statically admissible stress field, which does not exceed the Coulomb-Mohr yield conditions. Such an approach leads to determination of the limit base accelerations, which do not cause the plastic state in soil. It was shown that larger accelerations lead to increase of the lateral stresses, and the respective method, which may replace complex plasticity analyses, is proposed. It is shown that it is the lateral stress coefficient K0 that controls the statically admissible stress field during the shaking table experiments.

Opis:
This study presents research on the content of mercury and aluminium in arable soils within the range of influence of the Coal Mine and Power Plant Turów (Bogatynia region). The results were compared for reference with the region of Zgorzelec, which is situated outside the range of emission and with the results of tests conducted by other authors. The tests did not show a statistically significant increase in the mercury level in arable land from the range of influence of the Coal Mine and Power Plant Turów, neither in comparison to soils from Zgorzelec region. It is noticeable that the maximum level of mercury in the analysed area was nearly twice as high as in the values obtained in soils from industrial area in Opole and 25 times lower than the maximum mercury level found in the soils of Jelenia Góra District. On the other hand, tests of aluminium content showed a significant, nearly 3 times higher level of this metal in the range of direct influence of the Coal Mine and Power Plant Turów in comparison with the Zgorzelec region. The noted values were higher than in soils from industrial area in Opole.

Opis:
Powyżej występują piaski i żwiry średniozagęszczone i zagęszczone.
The ground and water conditions of the Wrocław city centre are presented based on the study conducted on several objects located near the Odra riverbed and in-between the Grunwaldzki Bridge and Millenium Bridge. In this area, glacial tills of the Sanian 2 Glaciations are found at the depth of 12–15 m. These tills are consolidated, hard-plastic and with a tendency to becoming semi-solid. They are overlain by compacted and medium-compacted sands and gravels that are irrigated and the water level depth is directly linked to the water levels of the Odra River. Interbedding of soil strata and lenticules of organic soils with variable thickness ranging between a few tens of centimetres and 2–3 m can occur in these deposits. The surface of the area is covered with non-engineering fills resulting mostly from warfare during the World War II. The results allow stating that the construction of buildings in this region will depend on both the depth to the Sanian 2 till and the lithological variability of the overlying deposits.

Celem badań była analiza przestrzennego zróżnicowania procesów i czynników glebotwórczych oraz właściwości pokrywy glebowej głęboko wciętej dolinki erozyjno-denudacyjnej Wieprzy w okolicach Mazowa (Równina Sławieńska, Polska północna). Badania wykazały, że mimo niewielkich rozmiarów dolinki erozyjno-denudacyjnej, w jej obrębie występuje duża różnorodność czynników i procesów glebotwórczych. Gleby dolinki zaklasyfikowano do czterech typów (brunatne kwaśne, deluwialne brunatne, deluwialne próchniczne, torfiasto-glejowe). Wrozwoju gleb, w skali całej dolinki, podstawową rolę odgrywa rzeźba terenu, a procesy glebotwórcze pozostają w ścisłym związku z jej morfogenezą.
The aim of research was an analysis of spatial differentiation of soil-forming processes and factors, as well as of soil properties, in a deeply incised erosional-denudational valley of Wieprza near Mazów, northern Poland. Despite small size of the valley, there exists considerable variability of soil-forming factors and processes within its limits, hence soil systematic position, morphology, and physico-chemical properties vary across the valley. Soils in the valley belong to four types: acid brown soils (cambisols), deluvial brown soils, humic deluvial soils and peaty-gley soils. Three main landscape elements can be distinguished within the study area: upper surfaces, valley sides, and valley floor. Each zone is typified by its own complex of soil-forming factors. In the upper slope/plateau area soil properties reflect the characteristics of parent rock. Loamy deposits of former ice-dammed lakes support acid brown soils of low pH, high content of organic matter in the humic horizon, and completely depleted in carbonates. Slopes below are subject to erosion, hence the thickness of humic horizon and organic matter content are reduced in respect to soils present on the plateau. In slope concavities one can observe deposition of material brought down by slope wash and the build-up of deluvial soils. These soils show the development of cambic horizon, which typically contains large quantities of organic matter. In the valley floor mud deposition and the development of humic deluvial soils takes place. The latter are enriched in organic matter, nutrients, favourable C/N and C/P ratio, and have higher pH if compared with soils on the slopes and on the plateau. Their evolution remains under significant influence of water seeping from the truncated water-bearing horizons and, seasonally, water issued from drains. The surplus of water is conducive for peaty-gleyey soil development. At the entire valley scale, local relief is a key factor influencing soil evolution, whereas soil-forming processes remain in close correspondence with morphogenesis of the valley.

Recently, there is an increasing need for accurate and rapid thermal measurement of soils. Within a variety of available methods a needle probe test is most widely used. The needle probe method was standardized for the measurement of thermal conductivity of soils and soft rocks. In the paper, two different interpretation methods of the needle probe test were used for determination of thermal conductivity of selected soils. The first method (ASTM D5334-05 Standard approach) takes into account only the data which are recorded during heating while the second approach is based on fitting the known analytical solution to the data obtained within both heating and cooling phases. The soil samples used were classified as clayey ones. Laboratory tests were performed using the KD2Pro thermal conductivity meter (Decagon Devices) with a TR-1 sensor. The main goal of the paper is to show that the selection of interpretation method is very important and may lead to significant differences in resulting thermal conductivities.

Activities of radioisotopes were measured in samples of forest soil. The samples were collected in forests situated along the roads from Złoty Stok (Poland) to Hradec Králové (Czech Republic). Each soil profile was separated into individual horizons and subhorizons. Activities of radioisotopes were measured in the sample of each soil horizon. Activities of the following radioisotopes were determined by gamma-ray spectrometry: 214Pb, 214Bi, 231Th, 235U, 212Pb, 212Bi and 228Ac. Distributions of the data concerning radioactivities were positively skewed. The lowest activity was found for 235U (median value was 2.25 Bg/kg) and the highest one for 228Ac (16.26 Bg/kg in median). In organic horizons activities of radionuclides were lower than in organic ones. Interrelation between activities was examined using ordinary and robust regression methods. It was found that activities of the radioisotopes were well correlated.

The progressing process of industrialization poses a greater and greater threat to the natural environment, especially agricultural land. To determine the balance of this environment, it is necessary to study the impact of these pollutants and to determine the so-called This paper tries to solve the problems of impact assessment by creating the so-called environmental algorithm, in which all the basic components of the soil environment are taken into account, for the simulation of pollutant emissions. The necessary calculations were made using modern calculation techniques in the Information Center SGGW-AR. Defining these soil relationships is the basis for constructing models that will objectively define the actual state of "soil resistance to contamination". These models should become the basis for planning plant production for areas with a higher degree of risk, and also affect the still current problem of stereotypical testing of soil suitability for agricultural production, known as "soil valuation"

The impact of winter addition of salts to roadside soils was studied for the national road No. 28 in Poland, in Małopolska Region. The measured sections of the road No. 28 are two access ways to the city of Grybów. According to instructions of GDDiKA (General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways) both sampled routes: Grybów–Gorlice (sampling section G-G) and the section Nowy Sącz-Grybów (N-G) were included in II standard of winter road maintenance. The general increase in soil salinity, chloride concentration and pH values from the roadside soils was evidenced by the difference of results of two sampling campaigns, before and after winter season of 2015/16. Salinity indicators showed significant increase, even though weather winter season 2015/16 was rated as mild and road de-icing salts were applied at less-than-average rate. Soil hydraulic properties were calculated estimated from soil texture using pedo-transfer functions for estimating the dynamics of salts into soils, suggesting easy leaching of salts from topsoil.

Opis:
The presented study aimed at determining the influence of the increasing dose of new Z-ion zeolite substrate on the growth of maize (Zea mays L.) as species belonging to energy crops. In order to achieve the study aim, the pot experiment was carried out where the plants were grown on six series of media i.e.: on marginal soil (the control series I), on arable soil (the control series II) and on four mixtures of marginal soil with increasing Z-ion substrate addition (1%, 2%, 5%, 10 % v/v). The pot test was carried out in a phytotron with a 13/11 light/dark regime. After the end of the experiment, the mean values of the vegetative parameters (wet and dry biomass of roots and stems) characterizing the plant growth in particular media series were determined. The C:N ratio for maize stems was calculated as well. The obtained study results showed a favorable influence of Z-ion substrate additions on the vegetative growth of maize. Already a 1% (v/v) substrate addition to marginal soil increased the wet and dry stems biomass by 173–204%. At the same time, it turned out that in the sixth week of plant growth, a 5% substrate addition to the marginal soil enables to achieve the value of vegetation parameters at a level similar to that of the parameters characterizing the plant development on arable land. Thus, at an early stage of plant growth, a 5% substrate dose can be considered as one allowing a similar course of maize growing on marginal soil as in the case of arable soil. It is worth noting that at this substrate dose, the C:N ratio in maize stems reached the value of 13.05, at which the plant biomass is the substrate ensuring the fairly proper course of methane fermentation supplying fuel in the form of biogas.

This paper presents the results of the heavy metals accumulation (Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe) in soils and plants (Typha angustifolia L., Urtica dioica L., Ranunculus sardous Crantz and Rumex Crispus L.) collected along the banks of the Sitnica River, which flows through various cities of Kosovo and is quite stressed due to the discharges of urban, industrial, and agricultural pollutants. The aim of this research was to verify the accumulation of heavy metals in water, soil and plants, since vegetables that used as food are cultivated in the vicinity of sample collection. The analyses were conducted with applied methodology in the analytic laboratory of Kosovo Agriculture Institute by using MP-AES 4200 for Cd and Cr, ASS-Scientific for Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and Pb in plant samples, whereas 4100 MP-AES was used for determination of metals in soil. The results show variations in different metal values found in the samples of the analyzed soils and plants. The lowest values accumulation of the metals analyzed were recorded at A1 (Devetak Station) near the river source and did not contain anthropogenic influences, whereas the highest values were recorded at A3 (Kuzmin Station), which belongs to the middle flow of the Sitnica River that is polluted by wastewater (urban) discharges.

The research was carried out in the morainic areas and in river valleys in NE Poland, where seven sites located in the macroregion of Masurian Lakeland were selected. Thirteen soil profiles representing the following organic soils were studied: earth-covered murshic soils (OMnm), murshic peat soils (OTmu), hemic murshic soils (OMhe) and sapric murshic soils (OMsa). The aim of the research was to investigate the content of selected macro- and microelements in surface formations of organic soils and to determine the influence of sedimentation processes on their spatial distribution. In terms of quantity, the analyzed macro- and microelements can be arranged as follows: Ca > Al > Fe > K > Mg > Na > P > Mn > Zn > Pb > Cr > Ni > Cu > Co. Organic soils situated in the depressions had various degrees of silting with mineral sediments from the nearby areas. Along with erosive waters, deluvial material rich in minerals was flowing along the morainic slopes. Therefore, mineral-organic formations (AO) located in the ecotone zone between mineral and organic soils had the highest content of total Mg – 4.85 g kg-1, K – 5.94 g kg-1, Al – 24.87 g kg-1, Fe – 17.77 g kg-1, Zn – 0.066 g kg-1, Cr – 0.046 g kg-1, Ni – 0.025 g kg-1, Pb – 0.060 g kg-1. The highest content of total calcium, manganese, iron, copper and cobalt was found in mineral-organic formations (AO) and strongly silted murshes (Mtsz). The contents of calcium and sodium were significantly positively and the contents of other macro- and microelements were significantly negatively correlated with the amount of organic matter, organic carbon and total nitrogen.

Opis:
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a very potent greenhouse gas whose concentration in the atmosphere is steadily increasing. Almost 80% of the annual N2O emissions in Poland originate from agriculture, and its main source is the use of agricultural soils. This study attempts to estimate the N2O emissions from agricultural soils and presents statistical analyses and spatial distributions for all Polish communes. For this purpose, a solution has been proposed which could be successfully applied by local government in order to assess N2O emissions, as well as to monitor the impact of actions undertaken to limit them. The annual N2O emissions from agricultural soils in Polish communes varies from 0.002 Mg N2O-N to 437.77 Mg N2O-N (with an average value of 21.13 Mg N2O-N and a standard deviation of 23.86 Mg N2O-N), and the cultivation of organic soils is its main source. The use of fertilizers and nitrogen fertilization with plant residues, as well as indirect emissions from nitrogen leaching, are also significant. The results may be used to provide a database for local governments, which will serve, not only to identify local emission sources related to agricultural soils, but also to properly plan and prioritize measures for its reduction.

Opis:

This article presents a modified incremental model describing pre-failure deformations of granular soils under classical triaxial conditions. The original shape of equations has been proposed by Sawicki and Świdziński [40, 41]. A new form of equations that are consistent with the proposed definitions of deviatoric loading and unloading is suggested. Triaxial tests necessary for calibrating the proposed model have been performed. The modified model is used to simulate the deformations and stability of sand for every pre-failure loading path and makes it possible to describe the behaviour of granular soil under both drained and undrained conditions. A comparison of experimental and numerical results is presented. All investigations were performed in a classical tri-axial apparatus.

The paper deals with the diffusion equation for pore water pressures with the source term, which is widely promoted in the marine engineering literature. It is shown that such an equation cannot be derived in a consistent way from the mass balance and the Darcy law. The shortcomings of the artificial source term are pointed out, including inconsistencies with experimental data. It is concluded that liquefaction and the preceding process of pore pressure generation and the weakening of the soil skeleton should be described by constitutive equations within the well-known framework of applied mechanics. Relevant references are provided.

The purpose of the work was to assess the results of simulation of soil water content (SWC) and the simulated crop yield quantity using a module LandscapeDNDC model which belongs to the family of DNDC models. The assessment was conducted on the outcome data gathered during the simulation carried out in the experimental plots of Agricultural Experimental Station in Brody (nearby Poznań, Poland) in the period of 28 March to 13 August 2012. The crops grown in the experimental fields were as follows: alfalfa, potatoes, winter wheat, rye and spring barley. Average daily content of water in the soil at the depth of 10 cm from 28 March to 13 August 2012 was 12.95 ± 0.52% (CI = 95%). This value was measured by the sensors installed in the automatic measurement site located 20–60 meters from individual experimental fields. This area in 2011/2012 was overgrown by low vegetation (monocotyledons and dicotyledons). Simulated average value of SWC for the experimental plots in the same period was 12.43 ± 0.85%. These results lead to a conclusion that the model correctly simulates water conditions of the soil. Simulations conducted in LandscapeDNDC brought the crop yield results which amounted from 64.4 to 116.1% of the specific actual crop yield. The crop yield quantity of spring barley was simulated most accurately, then the crops of alfalfa, winter wheat and potatoes. The measured quantity of winter rye crop yield (7.1 t ha-1) differs from national average quantity which was 2.4 t ha-1 in the years from 1999 to 2011. Such a big crop yield obtained in the experimental plot is rare in farming conditions, which results in the overestimation of the crop yield quantity by the model.

Opis:
Ballasted columns are an interesting technique for improving compressible soils in situ. Their major advantages are to reduce compaction, increase the bearing capacity of soils, accelerate consolidation, and eliminate the risks of liquefaction during earthquakes. Thanks to these advantages, reinforcement processes are considerably developed in the field of geotechnical construction and this is on an international scale. Numerical modelling is a necessary and effective alternative for approaching the real behavior of soils reinforced by ballasted columns. The present work aims to change several parameters, being, among others, the number of columns, the rise of the water table, and the friction angle. With this in mind, a parametric study was carried out in order to determine the influence of certain parameters on the settlement results and observe their influence on the mechanical behavior of the soil using the Plaxis 2D calculation code. This study found that the correct choice was based on the number of columns, which is three, while the increase in groundwater level does not have a significant influence on the results.

Chemical investigations of metals content in the soils (0.0–0.3 m) from the Włochy district in Warsaw were conducted in Autumn 2012. Sixty-one samples were collected in sites earlier indicated, with particular reagard to post-industrial areas and productive plants as sources of contamination. The content of arsenic, barium, chromium, cadmium, cobalt, copper, molybdenum, nickel, lead, tin, zinc and mercury was determined after digestion of samples in aqua regia. Additionally, the acidity and grain-size analyses of soil samples were carried out. The results of chemical and grain-size analyses are presented in a series of maps. An estimation of the degree of soil contamination by metals was carried out based on permissible limit values specified in Rozporządzenie…., 2002. Over most of the district area the soils are included into groups A and B (80.3% of the samples) and they are mostly used according to the recommendation of Rozporządzenie…, 2002, as the residential or agricultural areas. The soils classified into group C (including the industrial and communication areas) occur in post-industrial areas, where productive and service plants are currently located, and along the communication routes. In the contaminated areas, migration of the metals is limited by soil alkalinity.

Opis:
The paper concerns the evaluation of the initial stiffness of selected cohesive soils based on laboratory tests. The research materials used in this study were clayey soils taken from the area of the road embankment No. WD-18, on the 464th km of the S2 express-way, Konotopa-Airport route, Warsaw. The initial stiffness is represented here by the shear modulus (Gmax) determined during resonant column tests. In the article, a number of literature empirical formulas for defining initial value of the shear modulus of soils being examined were adopted from the literature in order to analyze the data set. However, a large discrepancy between laboratory test results and the values of Gmax calculated from empirical relationships resulted in the rejection of these proposals. They are inaccurate and do not allow for an exact evaluation of soil stiffness for selected cohesive soils. Hence, the authors proposed their own empirical formula that enables the evaluation of the test soils’ Gmax in an easy and uncomplicated way. This unique formula describes mathematically the effect of certain soil parameters, namely mean effective stress ( p′) and void ratio (e), on the initial soil stiffness.

Opis:
The paper presents theoretical solutions of the consolidation problem with respect to the different conditions of continuous loading and its application. The author introduces modified consolidation parameters and dimensionless parameters characterizing the course of the consolidation process. Therefore it is possible to calculate the theoretical pore water pressure distribution for various loading procedures in continuous loading (CL) consolidation tests occurring in constant rate loading (CRL), constant rate of strain (CRS) or controlled gradient (CG) tests. The calculation results allow presentation of the attributes that differentate CL consolidation and classical incremental loading (IL) consolidation. A new method of calculation cv (coefficient of consolidation) is proposed using theoretical diagrams of porewater pressure distribution and results of laboratory measure ments during the CL test. A comparative analysis of the methods currently used for cv calculation and the new method is presented here. The cv values estimated by means of method referring only to the seepage factor of consolidation, are usually higher than those based on the strain course. Proper projection of the seep age factor of consolidation makes it possible to shorten the time of consolidation tests in accordance with results of many field observations. The methods described herein can be useful in studying physical conditions of sedimentation, glacial geology, early diagenetic process and applied geology.

It discusses the rank of anthropogenic soils in soils classification as in PN-86/B-02480: Building soils. Definition, symbols, and description of the soils classification and it elaborates on the difficulties in distinguishing anthropogenic from indigenous soils. Using the example, inter alia, of Trasa Armii Krajowej in Warsaw, the Authors present problems associated with construction on anthropogenic soils, including those soils with great thickness, and illustrate problems with assessment of the condition of old berms, predominantly consisting of ashes. In addition, the article demonstrates that the study of anthropogenic soil construction should be comprehensive and should entail indigenous soils in the immediate vicinity of the site.

A magnetic study of 16 samples of topsoil and 2 soil profiles (11 samples) in the area of Cisna-Wetlina Landscape Park was carried out. The whole collection of the samples represents typical Carpathian soils – brown and sour. Magnetic susceptibility, frequency, dependence of magnetic susceptibility, temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility, thermal decay of saturation, isothermal remanent magnetization, parameters of hysteresis loop and anhysteretic remanent magnetization of the samples were measured in a laboratory. Mass magnetic susceptibility of topsoil specimens is below 40∙10−8 m3 ∙kg−1, which indicates that the investigated area is probably not polluted currently. The study of the samples from two soil profiles reveals a slight enhancement of magnetic susceptibility in the upper horizons, presumably related to natural processes. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and saturation isothermal remanence of four soil samples show that the presence of iron sulphide minerals (pyrrhotite) and maghemite is associated with hematite. The occurrence of other iron sulphide minerals in the soil is also possible. The saturation isothermal remanence curves do not confirm the presence of magnetite. Studies of the hysteresis loop reveal a significant role of paramagnetics among magnetic minerals occurring in the samples. Hysteresis parameters (coercive force, coercivity of remanence, saturation magnetization, isothermal remanent magnetization) and anhysteretic remanent susceptibility allowed the authors to evaluate the grain size distribution and reveal the presence of pseudo-single domain (PSD) grains.

The studies were conducted in the years 2012–2014 on agricultural areas affected by the gas and dust emissions of the Copper Smelter “Głogów”. The content of five trace elements – copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cadium (Cd), arsenic (As) – was determined in soil samples collected on the borders of the protection zone of the smelter by means of the AAS method. Additionally, the collected samples were used to determine the pH of the analysed soil. The studies showed that the contents of the analysed trace elements in the soil depended on the location of the soil in relation to the sources of the emission of the pollution and were the result of a strong concentration of these elements in a period of intensified emission from the plant. The element which caused the greatest soil pollution was copper. A strong variation in pH values was observed in the analysed soils (ranging from acid to alkaline reactions). The pH of most of the soils was ≥5.6. The conducted studies formed the basis for determining the initial isoline of the areas which exceeded the legal standards for soil quality in the discussed area. These studies are an integral complement to existing work on the evaluation of the local variability of soil pollution with heavy metals and arsenic in an area affected by smelter emissions.

This paper presents the results of the copper concentration in the soil forms approaching high-lighted the general and potentially available to plants at different distances from the edge of the roadway at the national road No. 3 in the area of Nowe Miasteczko. The results were compared with the Polish standards. The total Cu content ranged of 6-135 mg∙kg-1, and Cu potentially available to plant of 5-80 mg∙kg-1. The highest copper concentration was achieved right at the edge of the road. Lower copper concentrations were obtained in soil localized farther from the road. Comparing the value of copper to the Regulation of the Minister of Environmental of 9 September 2002 on standards for soil quality and land quality standards states that Cu concentrations did not exceed the limit values for soil group B and C.

The index Cc for contaminated organic soil can be estimated from the established compression index of "clean" soil and dielectric constant of the porous medium of polluted soil.

This experiment was carried out in laboratory conditions. The aim of this work was estimating allelopathic potential of Taraxacum officinale on seeds germination and initial growth of Poa pratensis. In the experiment different concentration of soil’s and plant’s water solution obtained from common dandelion were employed. The inhibition of germination energy of Poa pratensis under the influence of plant extracts produced from roots and leaves of Taraxacum officinale was found. Germination availability was inhibited in a higher degree by extracts prepared from the leaves than the roots of Taraxacum officinale. Higher concentrations of all solutions of both the soil and the plant inhibited the length of seending of Poa pratensis.

Trends in changes of water storage in upper soil layers were analyzed. The observations were carried out from 2002 to 2016 hydrological year in a small forest catchment in the district of Siemianice Forest Experimental Farm (LZD). The samples were taken from the upper soil layer of profiles located in different forest habitats, both at the beginning and at the end of hydrological half-years. Water storage was evaluated separately for two layers at the depths of 0–15 cm and 15–100 cm. Changes in water storage determined using the Mann-Kendall test were found to indicate multi-year trends. Results of the study are inconclusive. There were no statistically significant long-term trends in water storage changes in soil profiles in moist mixed broadleaved and coniferous forest and also in the soil profiles of fresh habitats. However, it is worth noting that statistically significant downward trends of water storage in two soil profiles located in ash alder swamp forest and moist broadleaved forest were observed. To some degree, they can be accounted for by long-term downward trends of ground-water levels in the area.

The paper presents the possibility of applying spent synthetic ion exchangers and sorbents based on natural zeolites for the reclamation of degraded soils. The obtained research results confirmed the improvement of the soil sorption capacity (cation exchange capacity) caused by the addition of spent ion exchange sorbents. They also enabled to determine the magnitude of changes of the analyzed parameters depending on the amount of wastes introduced to the soil. The addition of 1% (w/w) spent cation exchanger enables to increase the cation exchange capacity twice, whereas in the case of zeolite, the observed increase reaches about 20%. Simultaneously, introduction of waste ion exchange sorbents increases the content of exchangeable calcium and magnesium while doubling in the content of these macroelements is observed for 5% (w/w) and 2% (w/w) of spent ion exchanger, respectively. In the case of the exchangeable potassium content, a satisfactory increase is observed with 1% (w/w) addition of spent zeolite.

Opis:
The objective of this work is the agroecological substantiation of the use of treated wastewater for irrigation of agricultural land. As the result of the experimental research, it was established that the soil microflora plays an essential role in strengthening or weakening the biological activity of soil. Therefore, with an irrigation rate of 250 m3/ha of wastewater, a 1.5 times increase in the number of microbiota colonies is observed on average both in hog farms and cattle breeding complexes; with a rate of 350 m3/ha – a 2-fold increase; with a rate of 450 m3/ha – a 3.5–4-fold increase. An increase in nitrifying soil features has also been observed. Thus, if the value on the control in the soil layer from 0 cm to 60 cm is 27.2 mg of nitrate per 1 kg of arid soil, in the version with wastewater irrigation it reaches 46.7 mg. According to the research results, the use of defecate, the waste of sugar production, in the treatment of wastewater of livestock farms does not have a negative agroecological impact on the soil. Therefore, the method of wastewater treatment of pig-breeding complexes and farms can be recommended for use in irrigation reclamation, which includes treatment of wastewater with burnt defecate in the dose of 50–200 mg/dm3, with the pH value varying in the range of 7.5–8.5. After settling-out of the obtained mixture in settlers, it is divided into a transparent liquid fraction and the sediment, i.e. an organomineral fertilizer. Afterwards, the fluid body is fed to irrigation of agricultural land, and its excess is discharged into waterways and reservoirs. The sediment is fed to the vortex layer equipment with mobile ferromagnetic particles or thermolized, where their complete disinfection takes place.

The moorsh-forming process in peat formations is well known, but the moorshing of muds is poorly recognized. So far, a few studies on physical properties of mud soils, including muddy-moorsh soils, have been carried out. Main physical properties of muddy moorsh from the Lower Biebrza Basin were described and compared with the properties of muds from the same area. The results show remarkable changes of physical properties of muds caused by the moorsh-forming process. Only ash content in muddy moorsh is similar to that in muds, from which muddy moorshes have developed. The decay of muds results in significant increase in bulk density, specific density and in a decrease of total shrinkage. The retention properties decrease due to lower capillary water capacity, maximum water capacity, and moisture at pF 2.0 and pF 2.7. Actual moisture significantly decreases and air content increases. Moorshing of muds changes also the structure of soil pores. The content of micropores decreases while that of macropores and mesopores increases. Changes in physical properties of muds caused by the moorsh-forming process are similar to changes that take place in peat soils. The number of analysed moorsh samples was low because of point-wise distribution of muddy-moorsh soils in the Lower Biebrza Basin. Therefore, the obtained results, especially those concerning pF curves, should be treated as a rough approximation. Further studies on muds are recommended to better recognise the effect of moorsh forming process on physical properties of this type of soils.

Opis:
In the area of Kujawy-Pomerania province in Bielawy town the limestone is exploited which is the main resource in the production process carried out by Lafarge-Cement Plant. The alkaline reaction of emitted dusts caused excessive alkalisation of the surrounding soils which are also simultaneously contaminated by trace metals (including mercury). The aim of the study was to assess the impact of Lafarge-Cement Poland SA Plant ("Kujawy" Bielawy) activity on total content of mercury in arable soils in the vicinity of the plant. As a research material served arable soil gathered at various distances from the plant. Samples were collected from surface (0-20 cm) and subsurface (20-40 cm) horizons. Moreover samples were also collected from two soil profiles classified as Haplic Luyisol (Piechcin) and Haplic Podzol (Krotoszyn). The total content of mercury was determined in solid samples by atomic spectrometry method using AMA 254 mercury analyser. The results were as follows: in the 0-20 cm horizons within the range of 11.20-27.09 (4g o kg-1 and in 20-40 cm horizons - from 11.53 to 26.48 ug o kg-1. In profile samples, the total mercury content was within the range of 3.89-27.15 ug o kg-1. In the Haplic Luvisol the highest total content of Hg was detected at the C horizon, the lowest however at Eet horizon. In the case of the Haplic Podzol, the highest concentration of Hg was found in surface and subsurface horizons. The assessment of the total mercury content in soils surrounding Lafarge-Cement Poland SA Plant, did not confirm the influence of cement dusts on mercury contamination.
Badane gleby zaliczono do piasków gliniastych (PN-R-04033). Natomiast jedynie w próbkach profilowych z Krotoszyna stwierdzono obecność CaCO3 w wierzchnich poziomach: 5,9 i 5,0 %.

Distribution of black soils in Slovakia using the International Network of Black Soils (INBS) is evaluated in this paper. Numerous soil profiles (17,620 soil profiles from the complex soil survey of agricultural land and 318 monitoring sites in Slovakia) have been reviewed for their evaluation. According to the INBS criteria, the following parameters were evaluated: thick layer of humus, soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil organic matter (SOM) as well as a base saturation. In addition, some qualitative parameters of dark-coloured soils have been also evaluated (i.e. total nitrogen content – N tot , C/N ratio, C HA /C FA ratio and colour quotient Q4 6 ). On the basis of obtained results there was determined that the area of black soils, according to the INBS criteria, represents 93,654.63 ha which constitutes 19.7% of all black soils mapped according to land and ecological evaluation units and 3.92% of total agricultural soils in Slovakia. According to the INBS criteria, black soils are characterised by average thick humus layer of 57 cm and SOC content of 2.66% as well as 4.58% of SOM with high base saturation (96.65%).

Preliminary edometer tests of silty soils - loesses from Wrocław area were presented. The coefficient of collapse value i/mp and effective yield stresses value were determined. The YSR were finally estimated. The calculated value of i/mp was less than 0,02 - i/pm = 0,016, so examined soils are not collapsing type. The YSR values changed together with the soil sample saturation - for Sr = 1 value of YSR = 1,45, and for Sr = 0,35 value of YSR = 0,95. They were noticed that the state of the consolidation of soils is changed after saturating from overconsolidated to normally consolidated state.

Opis:
The research was conducted in 2008–2010 in Krakow. The experiments were located close to three busy streets of the city: Mickiewicz, Igołomska and Lublanska Avenue. 16 objects were set up at each location (2 variants in 8 replications). The experimental objects were pots with kentucky–bluegrass, Alicja c.v. 24 pots contained the plants which before sowing were stimulated with a green light emitted by the laser diode, three times for 30 seconds, whereas the remaining 24 pots were sown with red fescue sowing material without previous irradiation. The experiment aimed at determining the effect of pre–sowing stimulation of kentucky–bluegrass seeds with a laser diode on heavy metal contents. After three years of kentucky–bluegrass exposure along the streets in Krakow a smaller soil pollution with heavy metals was assessed in the pots sown with the grass sowing material which was pre–sowing stimulated with the laser diode. Computed bioaccumulation coefficients (BC) revealed that the kentucky–bluegrass which was pre–sowing stimulated with the laser diode accumulated higher quantities of all analyzed heavy metals than the plants which were not stimulated before sowing. Bioaccumulation coefficients (BC) calculated for plants not stimulated pre–sowing included in the range: 0.254–0.561 Zn, 0.434–0.512 Cu, 0.029–0.043 Pb, 0.178–0.211 Ni and 0.047–0.076 Cr, while for plants stimulated pre–sowing laser diode ranged: 0.341–0.849 Zn, 0.623–0.680 Cu, 0.043–0.071 Pb, 0.269–0.341 Ni, 0.063–0.128 Cr.
