Opis:
Over the last forty years, since Bandura (1977) introduced the concept of self-efficacy, there have been a constantly growing number of research publications using this concept. Its early development resulted in the creation of a new construct of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) proposed for the first time by (Chen et al. 1998). Since then, many different groups of research concerning ESE have emerged - one of them is the study of ESE of students. With regard to this particular group, a recent tendency to study ESE in a pre-post setting can be noticed i.a. Karlsson, Moberg (2013), Shinnar, Hsu, Powell (2014), Ismail, Zain, Zulihar (2015). Due to the increasing interest in entrepreneurial self-efficacy research and the need to fill the gap in the literature with regard to European post-communist countries (and particularly – Poland) (Drnovsek, Wincent, Cardon, 2010), in this paper we present a brief overview of ESE research and pose the question whether ESE of Polish students can serve as an early predictor of their subsequent entrepreneurial activities, potentially leading them to nascent entrepreneurship. The research material was collected from the SEAS (Survey on Entrepreneurial Attitudes of Students) Project carried out at the Faculty of Management and Economics, Gdańsk University of Technology. The research sample was composed of 72 students - ESE was measured in a pre-post setting using a single item based on a five-point Likert scale. One of the research conclusions is that ESE manifested by student-beginners seems to influence their later entrepreneurial behavior in a statistically significant way - potentially making ESE a valuable early predictor of future entrepreneurial activities. In the concluding part of the study, limitations are discussed and future study developments are indicated.

The authors discuss the role of general self-efficacy in new ventures creation. In the first part of the article antecedents and consequences of self-efficacy are described based on Bandura’a theory (1984). Antecedents, which include mastery experience, social modelling, physiological arousal and social persuasion, are discussed in relation to the situation of nascent entrepreneurs. Self-efficacy’s consequences - such as perceiving stressful situations as challenges and the ability to recover from disappointments are hypothesized to be important factors deciding on nascent entrepreneurs’ behavior and outcomes. In the second part of the article a distinction between general self-efficacy and entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) is described. The authors discuss theoretical and methodological aspects of using ESE in research on nascent entrepreneurs’ intention to create new ventures.
Źródła poczucia własnej skuteczności, do których należą doświadczenie własnych sukcesów, modelowanie społeczne, pobudzenie emocjonalne i perswazja społeczna, zostały przedstawione w kontekście sytuacji początkującego przedsiębiorcy (preprzedsiębiorcy). Autorzy przedstawiają teoretyczne i metodologiczne aspekty wykorzystania ESE w badaniach dotyczących intencji założenia firmy u preprzedsiębiorców.

Opis:
The article presents empirical and diagnostic research aiming to recognise how a generalised feeling of self-efficacy differentiates students’ independent learning. In the research, Generalized Self – Efficacy Scale (GSES) was applied (according to R. Schwarzer, M. Jeruzalem, in the Polish adaptation by Z. Juczyński) as well as a free-form interview, partially categorised. The study group was composed of 215 intentionally selected pedagogy students, following full-time and part-time courses. The variable adopted in the research differentiates the view of students’ independent learning, mainly in terms of the degree of involvement in their own learning. A high level of self-efficacy seems to be related to regularity, persistence in learning, consistency, the ability to focus on longer periods of learning, as well as the ability to plan and organize one’s own learning process. A generalized sense of self-efficacy, however, is not critical to how we understand the concept of learning, assigning value to it, and the used learning techniques.

Opis:
Introduction: Self-efficacy in nurses appears to be of great importance, and is one of the indicators of behaviour Purpose: Nurses’ self-assessment of their generalized self-efficacy in relation to their workplace. Material and methods: The study involved random sample of 570 nurses. A diagnostic survey was carried out using the standardized Generalized SelfEfficacy Scale (GSES). Results: The average value of self-efficacy amounted to 29.3±30. Among the respondents, 56.8% represented category of “high efficacy”, whereas others were of “average efficacy” (32.3%) and “low efficacy” (10.9%). The overall assessment of the nursing profession was higher in participants who presented higher values on GSES scale (R=0.12). The average general level of satisfaction in terms of 20 aspects of professional work was connected with self-efficacy which proved statistically significant. Analysis of self-efficacy score did not indicate statistically significant differences among workplaces. Conclusion: Over half of the participants represented the category of “high efficacy”. The group of nurses employed in district hospitals presented the least instances of low self-efficacy assessment. Individuals who were satisfied with their nursing professional development opportunities had a higher self-efficacy. The higher the perception of self-efficacy, the higher the workplace satisfaction. The average level of satisfaction resulting from various aspects of nursing profession depended on the perception of selfefficacy in the following areas of assessment: professional development opportunity, decisionmaking autonomy, sense of purpose at work, and, to a lesser extent, occupational safety, maintaining work-life balance, and the possibility of communicating with people.

The authors present the results of research carried out in the 2017/2018 academic year among foreign languages teachers at eight higher education institutions. The aim of the study was to find out the connection between the participation activity rate of foreign languages teachers in specially focused network pedagogical communities and the level of professional self-realization through their self-efficacy. We used methods of mathematical statistics, computer data processing and discursive reflextion for drawing logical conclusions from experimental data. 267 foreign languages teachers from Ukrainian universities participated in the first stage of research. During the second stage, 108 selected foreign languages teachers completed a questionnaire for collecting data and evaluating the level of their self-efficacy. Results indicate a significant difference in the professional self-realization levels among the members and non-members of specially focused network communities and confirm the suggested hypothesis.

The aim of the study was to recognize the self-efficacy of teacher education candidates for the teaching profession. Both generalized and specific self-efficacy has been studied for physical education teachers, as well as their correlation was defined. The studies were carried out by using a diagnostic survey among 80 students of the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice. The Scale of Generalized Self-Efficacy and Physical Education Teaching Efficacy Scale were applied. The research results indicate that teacher education candidates have high self-efficacy in both scale studies. The highest self-efficacy is achieved in the area of individualization of teaching skills, the lowest in teaching pupils with special needs. Studies have shown that students who have higher generalized self-efficacy feel more effective in tasks, related to fulfilling the role of a physical education teacher.

Our study describes the relationship of second language learning motivation, self-efficacy, and anxiety; that is, how motivation, cognition, and affect might interact during the process of second language learning. Questionnaire data were collected from 236 Hungarian students studying at various secondary schools. Structural equation modeling was used to investigate the proposed circular relationship of students’ motivated learning behavior, language learning experience, self-efficacy beliefs, and both debilitating and facilitating anxiety. Our results indicate that: (a) the process of motivation is complex and influenced by other individual difference (ID) variables, and (b) the investigation of ID variables in constellations rather than in isolation seems to be more fruitful in understanding language learner differences.

Teachers, including physical education (PE) teachers, are at risk of burning out in their work. The consequences of this syndrome have a negative impact on the teacher themselves and on their students. Therefore it is very important to identify factors that may prevent its occurrence. Self-efficacy is considered one such factor. The aim of the study was to determine if self-efficacy specific to PE teachers is related to their burnout. The study was conducted using a survey method, with the use of the Physical Education Teaching Efficacy Scale [PETES] and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. A total of 401 PE teachers were surveyed. PE teachers turned out to be rather moderately burnt out, except for one dimension - a reduced sense of personal accomplishments - which in almost the whole sample reached high values. Regression analyses conducted for all three dimensions of burnout were significant, explaining from 4% up to 10% of the variance. The dimension of accomplishments was positively predicted by two kinds of self-efficacy: applying scientific knowledge in teaching PE, and teaching students with special needs. Emotional exhaustion was significantly and negatively predicted by assessment efficacy, and using technology efficacy, and positively by accommodating skill level differences of efficacy. Finally, depersonalization was negatively predicted by instructional efficacy.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between Big-Five personality traits, perceived self-efficacy (GSES) and dimensions of occupational burnout in accordance with Christina Maslach’s three-factor burnout model (emotional burnout, depersonalization, perceived lack of own accomplishments). Data collected among 271 teachers (82% female) aged 20–68 confirmed findings from previous research that four personality traits (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness) are correlated with burnout and that they are significant predictors for all dimensions of burnout. In addition, it was shown that GSES plays a moderating role as a buffer that protects people with high levels of neuroticism from a sense of lack of own accomplishments. It was also found that GSES plays a mediating role for the relationship between Extraversion, Conscientiousness and Neuroticism and perceived lack of own accomplishments and that it is a suppressor for the relationship of neuroticism with emotional exhaustion. The results are discussed in the context of personality theories and their possible applications.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to analyze the role of the five-factor model (FFM) of personality and self-efficacy as predictors of business performance in nascent entrepreneurs in cultural and creative industries (n = 81). The study was prospective and longitudinal – the assessment of personality preceded the start of a self-owned business by the participants – and an assessment of business performance was conducted twice: seven months and abouta year after starting the business. The results showed that the participants wereless neurotic, more extraverted, more open to experience, and more conscientious and had a stronger sense of general self-efficacy in comparison to the general population. The FFM traits were weak but significant predictors of business performance; the strongest predictive traits were extraversion, neuroticism, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Some analyses including neuroticism and extraversion supported the hypothesized mediating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between personality traits and some indices of business performance. The results are discussed in the context of previous studies, including meta-analyses.

The following study focuses on individual differences between musicians who play solo (performing individually or as leaders), and musicians performing as part of a chamber ensemble, band, choir, orchestra, etc. We predicted that soloists would be higher on grandiose narcissism and self-efficacy. The results showed that soloists (n = 59) not only were higher on narcissism, but also had higher self-efficacy scores than musicians who perform in ensembles (n = 65). However, soloist and band players are not different in narcissism and self-efficacy when the other trait is controlled, which indicates that common features of both traits differentiate solo and band musicians. Results raise further questions on what factors affect the development of a musician’s career path.

Self-efficacy can affect an individual’s thoughts and emotions. It can be related to self-regulation processes and coping strategies. The aim of the study was to try to answer the question of whether there are correlations between the mentioned variables. To test this, an online survey was designed on the Google Forms platform, which included sociodemographic questions and three questionnaires: General Self-Efficacy Scale, COPE Inventory, Self Regulation Formative Questionnaire. The survey was prepared in English. The survey included 470 participants from Poland and Spain. The study was conducted during increased stress, which is the exam session. The result of the statistical analysis confirmed the accepted hypothesis. Strategies used in coping with stress are related to the level of selfregulation and self-efficacy. The higher the sense of self-efficacy, the more frequent the selection of favorable coping strategies, as well as the higher the level of self-regulation, the more frequent the selection of adaptive strategies and the rarer the selection of adaptive coping strategies. The results obtained are discussed in relation to the literature on the topic and previous studies, and it is suggested that further studies be conducted in a different context, taking into account that the results of self-efficacy or self-regulation could be different during intensified stress, for instance before or after an exam.

Opis:
Processes of children’s in the family are partly related to the quality of their parents’ marriage, which is influenced by various factors. Different factors have significant influence on marital quality. In particular, the link between personal characteristics of spouses (e.g. personality traits, attitudes, and values) and marital satisfaction has received much attention. However, there have been few studies concerning partners’ personal resources. The current research examined the effect of self-efficacy and resiliency on marital satisfaction among women. The study has covered 239 married women. Three questionnaires were used: the Wellmatched Marriage Questionnaire (KDM-2; Plopa, 2008), the Resiliency Assessment Scale (SPP-25, Ogińska-Bulik, Juczyński, 2008), and the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES, Polish adaptation, Juczyński, 2001). Correlation and regression analyses were performed in this study. Both general self-efficacy and resiliency proved to be positively associated with marital satisfaction in general terms. Self-efficacy also correlated positively with intimacy and similarity, while resiliency correlated positively with all favorable dimensions of marital relation, and negatively with disappointment. Regression analyses showed that one aspect of resiliency – openness to experience and sense of humour – was a significant positive predictor of marital satisfaction.

The purpose of this article is to specify whether there is any influence of school practices towards mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics outcomes. The studies about the effect of school practice on student achievement have a long history both domestically and abroad. However, the investigation of how the social context of school and practices affect student performance is not clear, especially in mathematics. To investigate this, I will chose al-touri secondary school where I teach as a case-study for my research. The instrument use for the article will be based on a questionnaire, which contains 2 sections. Section 1 will contain “School Level Environment Questionnaire” (SLEQ). Section 2 will contain “Mathematic Self-efficacy Questionnaire” (MSEQ). The mathematic scores of students will be taken for the first and second semester to compare between them and to see if there is a significant relationship between school practices and mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics outcomes. The findings indicate that there is a significant difference in students’ perception about their school practice and mathematic self-efficacy based on their achievement and according to ANOVA test, there is a relationship between school practices and mathematic self-efficacy. The result from this study can be generalized to the population of all schools in the Arab Sectors in Israel. Moreover, we can use the questionnaires obtained in the study to identify the strengths and weaknesses of schools in their teaching and learning process and to focus on improving their latter, at the same time maintaining the strength of their teaching strategies.

Forming action plans is expected to move people from intention to action. We hypothesized that the effects of planning interventions may depend on changes in self-efficacy beliefs. Participants (182 nurses and midwifes, 89% women, aged 19-50) were assigned to the control or the planning intervention (three planning sessions) groups and reported their self-efficacy, sweet and salty snack intake at the baseline and four months later. The results suggest that an increase of efficacy beliefs over time augmented the effects of the planning intervention and resulted in the lowest snack intake (the enhancing effect of self-efficacy). Planning intervention also prompted lower unhealthy snacking if efficacy beliefs were decreasing (the protective effect of planning). Those who have stable-high self-efficacy were able to achieve low snack intake regardless of the group assignment (the buffering effect of self-efficacy).

The aim of the text is to introduce BRIDGING, an international project that involves professionals working in educational institutions (kindergarten, school or crèche), academic and cultural institution from Poland, Portugal, Finland and Belgium. The project aims to improve the quality of practices in early childhood education through participation of children, teachers, cultural and academic staff in artistic projects in public spaces. Crucial part of BRIDGING is to promote various ways of communication of children and adults using the concept of citizenship in the context of holistic approach. Additionally our intention is to introduce the preliminary results of the first Polish part of the BRIDGING project research. The study was conducted to investigate how the project is perceived by kindergarten teachers. Although only the first results are presented here, it is already quite evident what the specific areas of teachers’ sense of vocational self-efficacy are. The results show that our respondents value the experiences brought to them by the project. In their opinion BRIDGING gave them an opportunity to acquire knowledge about their city, neighbourhood and the partners’ countries. They also stated that the project has improved their skills of using ICT tools and various art techniques.

The present study aims to scrutinize teacher motivation in relation to two individual level predictors, namely, self-efficacy and burnout among English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers. To this end, 142 English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers were selected from various English language institutes of Mashhad and Tehran, two cities in Iran. They were requested to complete three questionnaires: the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale, and the Work Tasks Motivation Scale for Teachers. The findings obtained via SEM revealed that the proposed model had a good fit with the empirical data. In particular, it was found that job motivation contributed significantly to burnout depletion. It was also revealed that self-efficacy positively predicted job motivation, and burnout negatively influenced self-efficacy. However, self-efficacy surpassed motivation in predicting EFL instructors’ burnout. Results were discussed from both theoretical standpoints as well as previous empirical findings. Finally, implications were presented.

Artykuł prezentuje skalę do pomiaru przekonania o skuteczności w podejmowaniu działań związanych z zakładaniem własnej firmy.
Self-efficacy beliefs can distinctively refer to different spheres of functioning and to different tasks, including entrepreneurial activity. The paper presents development of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy Scale (ESES) designed to measure perceived self-efficacy in carrying out tasks aimed at a new venture creation. Psychometric properties of the scale were evaluated on the basis of the data obtained from 315 potential entrepreneurs in a 1-year longitudinal study. Factor analysis of the ESES scores yielded three distinct narrower domains of entrepreneurial self-efficacy pertaining to: (1) gathering marketing information, (2) managing financial and legal matters, and (3) setting up business operations. The scale was shown to have high internal consistency with Cronbach’s alpha = 0.96. The ESES scores were also found to correlate positively with previous entrepreneurial experience and other personality measures, such as General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), Self-Esteem Scale (SES), Life Orientation Test (LOT-R) and Adult Dispositional Hope Scale (ADHS). People with an intention to create a new venture scored significantly higher on ESES than those without such an intention, and the level of entrepreneurial intention correlated positively with the ESES scores. All findings of the study suggest that ESES is a reliable and valid measure of entrepreneurial self-efficacy.

According to the self-expansion model, people are motivated to increase their sense of personal agency by expanding their sense of self through the acquisition of new identities. We conducted two studies to explore whether the feeling of self-expansion, resulting from multiple group memberships, is related to self-efficacy, and to test whether agentic and communal self-stereotyping mediated this relation. In Study 1 conducted in Poland (N1 = 102), and Study 2 among undergraduate students from Poland, Spain, and Sweden (N2 = 450), a significant indirect effect of self-expansion on self-efficacy through agentic (but not communal) self-stereotyping emerged.

Purpose: This study is a contribution to the validation of the Motivation to Lead (MTL) scale proposed by Chan and Drasgow (2001) in order to measure three types of motivation to be a leader: affective, social-normative and calculative. This research examines the psychometrical properties of the MTL scale in the Estonian context. Methodology: The sample of 517 military and non-military individuals from the Estonian Defence Forces, Estonian Police and students from Tallinn University participated in the study. The original MTL scale was expanded by with the addition of ideological and patriotic dimensions proposed by Amit and colleagues (2007). The factorial structure of the MTL Scale was analysed by using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (respectively N = 170 and N = 347). Findings: The results confirmed that both three- and five-component MTL scales are applicable in the Estonian context; the pool of 35 items was reduced into 25 items with good internal reliability. Moreover, the results showed correlations between leadership self-efficacy and MTL components, and differences between leaders’ and non-leaders’ MTL. The results indicate that the MTL scale can be a reliable and useful instrument to measure leadership motivation in the Estonian military context. Originality: This study is the first to adapt the MTL scale to the Estonian context. In addition, it examines the validity of ideological and patriotic MTL as part of the general MTL construct outside of the Israeli samples.

The Coping Self-Efficacy Scale, CSES) assessed the overall level of coping self-efficacy and its four factors, and the Inventory of Social Competence (ISK – K) assessed four social competencies. Results showed a significant increase of low practical significance over time (pretest vs. retest) in the level of social orientation (in ISK – K) and an increase of medium significance in overall self-efficacy and in the ability to use strategies focused on problems and unpleasant emotions and thoughts (in CSES) among university students. After completion of the course, NGO participants increased (with a low practical significance) their SK-K levels of offensiveness and self-control and their CSES self-efficacy and ability to use strategies focused on problems and unpleasant emotions and thoughts. There were no significant differences between overall levels in the two courses. The study offers possible implications of social competence facilitation in the context of educational leader formation at Slovak schools.

The tool had satisfactory psychometric properties. Study 2, in which 340 students participated, verified the role of believing in free will as a potential mediator between spirituality and perceived self-efficacy. In the case of male students, total mediation was found, and in the case of female students, partial mediation was noted. The studies indicate the need to put greater emphasis on the spiritual sphere and the sense of free will in the education provided for young adults.

The aim of the study was to determine the role of self-efficacy, outcome expectancies, and risk perception (including consequences of mastectomy) in formulating the intention to undergo breast reconstruction in 178 women after total mastectomy. The social-cognitive variables were measured in the context of breast reconstruction, while depression was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory. The structural equation modeling revealed that among the predictors there were only two that accounted for the intention to undergo breast reconstruction, i.e. self-efficacy and outcome expectancies (R2 = .67). Subsequent analyses of the related moderators, i.e. depression, age, and duration of the disease indicated a good fit to the data. Nevertheless, in subgroups with poorer resources (older age, depression, and longer duration of the disease) the direct effects of self-efficacy on intention were less noticeable or non-existent. The results suggest that self-efficacy may play the regulating role in making a breast reconstruction decision if individual resources are taken into account.

Until relatively recently the impact of emotions on language learning has often been ignored and “the nature and contribution of positive emotions and beneficial emotional states deserves further attention” (Bown & White, 2010, p. 433). Our study focuses on a flexible language learning system that combines different elements: work in a virtual learning environment, group work, counselling sessions and a logbook. One of its objectives is to help students progress towards autonomy—defined as “the capacity to take control over one’s own learning” (Benson, 2011, p. 2)—in their learning of English. The logbook has been shown to be useful in helping students become conscious of the new role they have to play in such a system (Chateau & Zumbihl, 2012). A discourse analysis of 100 logbooks from the 2012-2013 cohort of students showed that the traces of emotions they contained could enable us to identify important steps in the development of autonomy, as well as make hypotheses on the links between emotions, students’ self-efficacy and the development of learner autonomy.

Agile leadership requires self-reflection. The human image of the supervisors responsible in the com- pany is characterised by appreciation, openness and respect. Leaders create framework conditions and take care of the individual development of individual employees. Their know-how and mindset should be aligned with the agile leadership style. Dealing with the essential principles (change, trust, decisions, iterations, feedback, failure culture, communication) in everyday life does not happen as a matter of course. Agile leadership often fails because of its own self-efficacy and self-functionality. The belief in one‘s own influence to make a difference in difficult situations (self-efficacy) strengthens self -confidence. In complementary self-functionality, each team member works towards a higher goal. Team success is the focus. It requires a high level of self-leadership. Employees with this competence act independently and as part of the team towards the visions and goals of the organisation. Only when self-efficacy and self-leadership are successfully developed among managers and employees can agile leadership be successfully implemented in the company.

The aim of the study is to analyze mathematical resilience from theoretical and practical perspectives. The paper is based on a review of the literature. Research on mathematics education has revealed a large proportion of students with math anxiety whose achievements in math are worsening. Such results encourage a discussion on preventing math anxiety. Research on the resilience of children and adolescents has accelerated in recent decades, resulting in the formulation of the concepts of school and mathematical resilience. The article presents the ecological model of mathematical resilience. The role of parents and teachers in promoting mathematical resilience is also described. The paper presents areas where students can self-foster mathematical resilience. The conclusions are related to the importance of strengthening mathematical resilience in education.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the influences of some personality traits, measured with the HEXACO model of personality, on the perceived ability to manage one’s own affects. The results of the correlations and the linear regressions between the personality traits, measured by the HEXACO-60, and the perceived ability to manage affects, measured by the Regulatory Emotional Self-Efficacy Belief scale, support the idea that extraversion is more related to expressing positive affects, whereas emotionality is more related to managing negative affects, and conscientiousness is slightly related to some aspects of self-regulation of positive and negative affects. The results obtained in this study for the HEXACO are similar to those displayed for FFM in previous studies regarding personality traits and positive and negative affects.

The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between the sense of generalised self-efficacy and the level of prohealth behaviours among Polish and Spanish physical education students. The study was conducted among 499 physical education students (219 Polish and 280 Spanish). The Inventory of Health Behaviours (IZZ) by Z. Juczyński and the Generalised Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) by R. Schwarzer, M. Jerusalem and Z. Juczyński were used. Among the categories of healthy behaviours included in the Inventory of Health Behaviours (IZZ), the physical education students obtained the highest average results in the area of positive mental attitude (22.26), less in the prohealth practices (20.10) and proper eating habits (19.85), and less again in the area of preventive behaviours (18.97). Statistically significant positive correlations were found between the intensification of the generalised sense of self-efficacy and the levels of positive mental attitude (p = 0.024) and preventive behaviours (p < 0.001). The moderating influence regarding home country on relationships between the generalised sense of self-efficacy and general index of pro-health behaviours (p = 0.024) was also demonstrated; in the case of the Spanish students the level of pro-health behaviours increased, but for the Polish students it decreased.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between distributed leadership and job self-efficacy with the mediating role of academic optimism of the teacher. This study is applied and correlation research based on structural equation modeling. 281 teachers of Zahedan city were selected using stratified random sampling. To collect information, three questionnaires were used: distributed leadership (Gholami, Sahranavard, & Azizi, 2014), job self-efficacy (Riggs & Knight, 1994) and teacher’s academic optimism (Beard, Hoy, & Woolfolk, 2010). For data analysis the Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated using SPSS and structural equation modeling was done using Lisrel software. Based on the results the direct effect of distributed leadership on job self-efficacy (β=0.33), the direct effect of distributed leadership on teacher’s academic optimism (β=0.76) and the direct effect of teacher’s academic optimism on job self-efficacy (β=0.42) was found to be significant. The indirect effect of distributed leadership on job self-efficacy was also found to be significant with the mediating role of organizational laziness (β=0.352). Therefore, it can be concluded that through applying a distributed leadership style in schools (with regard to trust-based leadership, a democratic climate, comprehensive support, and teachers’ professional development) the level of teachers’ academic optimism increases. With an increase in teachers’ academic optimism, their job performance can be expected to improve.

Learning in unknown circumstances is a great challenge for young people, particularly those who lack the ability to regulate their emotions. This text presents the results of research on the image of the life of students in higher grades of primary school, measured by the sense of self-efficacy and the sense of helplessness. The research was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic among 303 students. It was found that (1) students rather express their belief in their own effectiveness (agency), and, at the same time, (2) half of the students indicated the feeling of helplessness; (3) helplessness is significantly higher among girls; (4) in the case of girls, there is a clear and strong negative relation between the sense of effectiveness and the helplessness.

The positive psychology movement (Seligman, 1998) has contributed to the proclamation of a positive turn in second language acquisition (SLA) (MacIntyre et al., 2016). Within the context of individual differences, self-efficacy (Bandura, 1997), an individual’s judgment of their capability to achieve goals, has gained particular interest in language learning (e.g., Lake, 2013). The present study meta-analyzes a body of research that has investigated the relationship between second language (L2) self-efficacy and L2 achievement by exploring 1) reporting practices in this domain, 2) the strength and direction of the relationship, and 3) the effects of moderator variables on the self-efficacy-achievement link. A comprehensive literature search uncovered 37 studies, which contributed to a total of 40 independent samples (N = 23,050). The average observed effect in the sample was r = .46. A moderator analysis showed systematic variations in the effect size for learners’ first language, target language, proficiency level, and both self-efficacy and achievement type. We discuss our findings with respect to theoretical constructs and methodological practices and suggest implications for L2 pedagogy and future research into self-efficacy in SLA.

Despite the growing empirical interest in academic procrastination in the distance learning, there are only limited studies on the determinants of this phenomenon in the blended learning programmes. The present study investigates the relationships between general self-efficacy, two types of procrastination (active and passive procrastination), and the behavioural tendency to postpone learning activities in a blended learning university course using Moodle platform. Results indicate that passive procrastination is strongly positively associated with procrastination in blended learning, while perceived self-efficacy and active procrastination are unrelated to the self-reported task delays during the blended learning course. In addition, the negative link between the reported number of previous completed blended-learning courses and procrastination in blended learning is observed. Practical and theoretical implications of these findings for a blended learning environment are discussed.

In the current national curriculum (the Framework Educational Programme for Basic Education – FEP) the concept of child /pupil/student has become the basis for conceptual thinking about the whole educational process. If we want to respect the pupil´s personality, then it is necessary realize in practice the relevant didactic concept. It includes an approach to student assessment, too. Such assessment fully engages pupils in targeted judging process. In this contribution we describe a model of a comprehensive and developing assessment and conditions for its implementation. In the proposed model student self-assessment is fully connected to the systematic assessment of the teacher and gains a significant importance for self-directed learning. Both assessing processes (teacher assessment and pupil self-assessment) support the student´s motivation and efforts to achieve the set goals and encourage teachers to select appropriate strategies developing the personality of the pupil.

The study investigated psychometric properties of the Sport Motivation Scale-6 (SMS-6), assessing intrinsic regulation, four extrinsic regulation constructs, and amotivation among athletes competing at a regional and national level. In particular, we tested the factorial structure of SMS-6, its short-term stability, and the associations of SMS-6 constructs with self-efficacy, self-esteem, motivational climate, and satisfaction with sport performance. Participants were 197 athletes (57.4% women), representing team (54.7%) and individual disciplines. The measurement was repeated at the three-week follow-up (n = 107). Results yielded support for the six first-order factor structure (three second-order factors). More autonomous forms of motivation were related to higher levels of self-efficacy, performance satisfaction, and taskoriented motivational climate in sport organizations. Sequential multiple mediation analysis showed that the association between general self-efficacy and performance satisfaction at a follow-up was mediated by introjected regulation and personal-barrier self-efficacy.

To this end, a general temporal intelligence (GTI-S) scale was designed based on the subconstructs of time in the literature. The scale, along with the learning self-regulation questionnaire (SRQ-L) and the English self-efficacy scale was administered to 520 EFL learners. To validate the GTI-S, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was run. The results of Pearson product-moment correlations demonstrated significantly positive relationships between temporal intelligence and controlled self-regulation, automatic self-regulation and self-efficacy (p<.05). Moreover, the findings of multiple regressions revealed that Linearity of Time, Economicity of Time, and Multitasking are the most important subconstructs of time with relation to these variables.

Opis:
The article provides an empirical analysis of a relationship between ethical orientations and educational self-efficacy. Ethical orientations are defined in the theoretical system of K. Gilligan, whereas self-efficacy is viewed through the social-cognitive theory. The results of the analysis of variance demonstrate the existence of statistically significant differences in self-efficacy between teachers who prefer the ethics of justice and those who prefer the ethics of care, in favour of the former. However, the Eta coefficient shows that the relationship strength is not very large. In conclusion of the result interpretation we explain what our research explicates and what lies beyond its capacity.

Entrepreneurship is crucial for promoting innovation, creating employment opportunities and generating social and economic wealth in a country’s economy. In order to increase entrepreneurial activity, it is important to investigate entrepreneurial behavior by analyzing the process of businesses creation and the set of factors that favor the development of entrepreneurial aspirations, intentions and actions, which is a central goal of psychology of entrepreneurship. This research aims to deepen the knowledge about the relationship between the entrepreneurial self-efficacy, belief, motivation, family support and entrepreneurial intentions by developing a moderated mediation model. This study suggests that entrepreneurial self-efficacy partially mediates the effect of beliefs and motivations on entrepreneurial intention. This mediation is moderated by family support, which is also directly related to the intentions. The study was conducted on a sample of 446 students from four different high schools, and results support our hypotheses. Theoretical and practical implications from this research are further examined in the study.

Opis:
Given the lowering of trade barriers among nations, the internet revolution, and a resultant increase in the bargaining power of consumers, coupled with the economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic, firms are increasingly forced to make use of a high performing workforce. It is to raise the quality of their products and/or services as global competition for the consumer’s money severely punishes inefficiencies. As a result of this, it has become imperative for organizational researchers to determine the important antecedents of employee task performance. Hence, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the domain-based self-efficacy and employee task performance. Drawing on the Social Cognitive Theory, we propose that there is a relationship between these two variables, and that the relationship is moderated by emotional intelligence, with the view of shedding light on the inconsistent nature of the results from previous studies. Through the descriptive survey research design, the multi-stage sampling technique was applied in eliciting data from a total of 342 employees of the Nigerian banking industry who are employed in the customer services sector. From the simple moderation analysis conducted after utilizing the Process macro, results indicate that there is a positive and significant relationship between domain-based self-efficacy and task performance. However, emotional intelligence moderates this relationship in such a way that the positive relationship between self-efficacy and task performance was weaker among subjects who reported a higher level of emotional intelligence. In the light of these findings, it was recommended for managers particularly in the banking industry to set up intervention strategies that have the potentials of promoting a desirable level of domain-based self-efficacy among their employees while also ensuring that an optimal mix of emotional intelligence both within and across components is promoted with the view of achieving a desirable moderating impact of this relationship.

This paper has been written using data derived from a major study conducted by Oyugi (2011). The study investigated the contribution of entrepreneurship education to the development of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and intentions among university students in Uganda. The paper recognizes the development and the teaching of entrepreneurship courses in most universities in Uganda with the aim of rolling out students sufficiently equipped to become job creators. At a time when efforts are being made to address graduate unemployment through mainstream training in entrepreneurial skills in post-primary and post-secondary education, this paper provides timely guidance on the entrepreneurial curriculum. It proposes a quantitative analysis in which entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial self-efficacy are key to developing entrepreneurial intentions of students. To investigate this, two hypotheses were formulated. Data was collected by means of a mail survey questionnaire completed by students, randomly selected from a sampling frame of third year students, who had training in entrepreneurship course. The findings revealed that significant relationships exist between entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial intention, while self-efficacy was found to partially mediate the entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial intention.

This study looked at the impact of the integration of contemplative practices on foreign language anxiety, positive and negative affect, self-efficacy, classroom climate, and language learning in students enrolled in an advanced intermediate Spanish language course in the USA. Data included pre- and post-test surveys, exam scores to measure learning outcomes, student interviews, and course evaluations. In the contemplative group, students engaged in brief 10-minute contemplative practices once a week, while the non-contemplative group followed the same syllabus but was not exposed to contemplative practices. Analysis of the data showed no significant differences in foreign language anxiety, self-efficacy or affect between the non-contemplative and contemplative groups at post-test but significantly higher scores on classroom climate measures in the contemplative group. Significantly higher grades were found on course exams for students in the contemplative group. Analysis of the pre-/post-survey data revealed a significant decrease in foreign language anxiety in both groups over the semester but not for affect or self-efficacy. This study extends the existing research on contemplative practices to a new context-affect and learning in foreign language courses.

Critical and creative thinking skills share a considerable scholarly discussion; little is known about the gender-based differences in students’ critical thinking and creativity, along with their impact on academic performance in the Arabian Gulf context. Data for the study were collected through standardized measurements from 220 students and matched with students’ performan ce in various assignments. The data were analyzed through group comparisons and classification algorithms. The results demonstrated gender differences in academic success and relationships between critical thinking and creativity. The current study may assist researchers and practitioners in the educational field who enhance creativity and critical thinking development among students considering gender and academic success. This will allow to improve teaching-learning experiences and prepare youth for their further professional success.

Objectives: This study aims at exploring associations of general self-efficacy (GSE), workplace violence and doctors' work-related attitudes. Material and Methods: In this study a cross-sectional survey design was applied. Questionnaires were administrated to 758 doctors working in 9 hospitals of Zhengzhou, Henan province, China, between June and October 2010. General information on age, gender, and years of working was collected, and the doctors' experience and witnessing workplace violence, job satisfaction, job initiative, occupational stress as well as GSE were measured. General linear regression analysis was performed in association analyses. Results: Both experiencing and witnessing workplace violence were significantly positively correlated with the level of occupational stress but significantly negatively correlated with job satisfaction, job initiative, and GSE. General self-efficacy significantly modified relationships between both experiencing and witnessing workplace violence with occupational stress (β = 0.49 for experiencing violence; β = 0.43 for witnessing violence; p < 0.001) and with job satisfaction (β = -0.35 and -0.34, respectively; p < 0.05). However, it did not modify the relationships between both experiencing and witnessing workplace violence with job initiative (p > 0.05). The levels of occupational stress declined significantly with the increase of GSE, while job satisfaction increased significantly along with its increase. The effects of GSE on occupational stress and job satisfaction weakened as the frequency of violence increased. Conclusions: The findings suggest that GSE can modify effects of workplace violence on health care workers' stress and job satisfaction. Enhancing GSE in combination with stress reduction may lead to facilitating health care workers' recovery from workplace violence, and thereby improving their work-related attitudes.

In this article it has been attempted to confirm the thesis on the existence of co-dependence between the individual’s proactivity and self-efficacy in the process of developing a professional career. To this end, a review of selected theoretical depictions on both, constructs and results of research explorations specifying mutual relations, was conducted. The objectives of the study were to recognize the main motives for engagement in actions beyond basic professional duties among various professional groups and to identify selected properties of the subject and context of activities that contribute to such beyond-duties engagement. A set of questionnaires in electronic or paper form was completed by 209 employees, including 104 representatives of assistance professions and 95 representatives of creative professions, aged between 21 and 67 years (M = 37.54, SD = 9.55). It was established that the main motives for beyondduties engagement in both groups of professionals under study were self-actualization and acting for the benefit of others. With the use of structural equation modelling, subjective and contextual determinants of engagement in actions beyond basic professional duties were identified as self-efficacy and action meaningfulness. The research discusses the phenomenon of engagement in extra activities at work from the perspective of the acting person/employee. The study results can be useful for managers in setting goals of appropriate type and manner to their employees as well as for task assignment.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is to verify the assumption that pronunciation learning during a course of phonetics is hindered by the feeling of anxiety (Phonetics Learning Anxiety) experienced by foreign language (FL) learners studying English as their major at universities or colleges. A study carried out among 32 students of the School of English at Wroclaw University (Poland) revealed a significant negative correlation of moderate strength between the subjects’ level of Phonetics Learning Anxiety (PhLA) and their attainments on pronunciation tests (sentence, passage and word reading) conducted after a 45-hour (30x90-minute lessons) course of practical phonetics. The detrimental effect of PhLA on pronunciation learning was further supported by t-tests, in which the pronunciation of high anxiety subjects was found to be at a significantly lower level than that of low anxiety students. The Phonetics Learning Anxiety Scale, a 44-item questionnaire based on a 6-point Likert scale, designed for the purpose of the research sheds light on the nature of this peculiar type of apprehension experienced by advanced FL learners in a specific educational context (i.e. a traditional classroom, rather than a language or computer laboratory), in which the major focus is on pronunciation practice. The obtained quantitative data imply that such factors as fear of negative evaluation (represented by general oral performance apprehension and concern over pronunciation mistakes, pronunciation self-image, pronunciation self-efficacy and self-assessment) and beliefs about the nature of FL pronunciation learning are significant sources of PhLA. Anxiety about the transcription test (IPA Test Anxiety) - one of the other hypothetical determinants of PhLA - did not prove to be correlated with the general level of Phonetics Learning Anxiety

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional face-to-face learning was suddenly replaced by online learning in universities all over the world. This sudden switch posed a wide variety of challenges to teachers and students. This paper focuses on one teaching practice, teachers’ feedback, and on a students’ form of self-perception, self-efficacy beliefs, both inherent to the teaching-learning process, whether it occurs in the classroom or a virtual environment. An action-research mixed-method study was performed to analyze how teachers’ feedback can impact translation students’ self-efficacy beliefs in three educational modes: face-to-face lessons, blended learning and online learning. This study was performed in two phases. Firstly, a quasi-experimental field study was performed before the outbreak of the pandemic in three groups of the same course: one offered traditional classes, whereas the other two included blended learning. Following the essence of action-research, the results of this first phase were implemented in an online translation course during the pandemic. After comparing and contrasting the results obtained in these two phases, we can conclude that indirect, elaborate and dialogic feedback fostered the students’ self-efficacy beliefs, irrespective of the educational mode.

Zastosowano Skalę Uogólnionej Własnej Skuteczności (GSES) R. Schwarzera i współpracowników, Kwestionariusz Radzenia Sobie (KRS) E. Gruszczyńskiej, Kwestionariusz Satysfakcji z Życia (SWLS) E. Dienera i współautorów oraz Inwentarz Objawów Depresyjnych A. T. Becka (BDI).

Objectives The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between workplace bullying, mental health and an intention to leave among nurses, and the mediating role of self-efficacy. Material and Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among 385 nurses in Taiwan. Data were collected by means of self-report questionnaires, including the Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Chinese Health Questionnaire, and the Employee’s Turnover Intentions and Job Destination Choices Scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were used. Results Bullying was found to negatively correlate with self-efficacy and mental health, and positively with an intention to leave. Self-efficacy positively correlated with mental health, and negatively with an intention to leave. Hierarchical regression showed that bullying and self-efficacy were significant predictors of both mental health and an intention to leave. Self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between bullying and mental health, as well as an intention to leave. Conclusions Self-efficacy acted as a mediator of workplace bullying, mental health and an intention to leave among nurses. It could protect victims from the devastating effects of bullying behaviors. Opis:
ObjectivesThe aim of the research was to analyze the impact of selected factors: years of service, the number of interventions, self-efficacy and stress, on occupational burnout. It was hypothesized that firefighters with more years of service and a bigger number of interventions would be characterized by higher perceived stress and burnout, and that self-efficacy would have an impact on reducing the level of perceived stress and burnout.Material and MethodsThe participants were firefighters (N = 576) from 12 Polish voivodeships, aged 20–58 years, with different seniority: up to 3, 4–8, 9–15 or >15 years of service. The following research tools were used: the Link Burnout Questionnaire, the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale, the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, and an independent questionnaire to gather additional information. A correlation between particular variables was carried out; the Kruskal-Wallis test was performed together with a post-hoc analysis to examine differences in the severity of individual variables depending on seniority, followed by a path analysis studied together with the identification of direct and indirect impacts.ResultsThe number of interventions did not affect the severity of experienced stress or any of the aspects of burnout. Work experience directly influenced the level of perceived stress (β = 0.219), disillusion (β = 0.076), and relationship deterioration (β = –0.156). The generalized sense of self-efficacy was found to impact both on reducing the sense of stress (β = –0.418) and on all 4 aspects of professional burnout: psychophysical exhaustion (β = –0.181), relationship deterioration (β = –0.16), the sense of professional inefficacy (β = –0.275) and disillusion (β = –0.143).ConclusionsThe results have shown that: 1) the number of interventions does not affect the severity of experienced stress or particular aspects of burnout; 2) years of service increase the severity of experienced stress and occupational burnout; 3) self-efficacy has an impact both on reducing the sense of stress and on all aspects of burnout.

This study explores the relationship between teachers’ sense of efficacy and their organizational commitment at colleges in Pakistan. It was conducted on a sample comprising 494 public-sector Pakistani college teachers. Tschannen-Moran and Hoy (2001) developed the teachers’ sense of efficacy scale, and John P. Meyer and Natalie J. Allen's developed organizational commitment scale (1991) was applied to collect the data. Hypotheses were tested using the Pearson Product Moment formula. The effects of the factors of the teachers’ sense of efficacy on organizational commitment were determined using the Regression Analysis. It was determined that a higher degree of teachers’ sense of efficacy enhances organizational commitment, as highlighted by a significant positive correlation between the teachers’ sense of efficacy and organizational commitment. There was a significant positive correlation between three factors of the teachers’ sense of efficacy scale and three components of organizational commitment of college teachers. It was also established that the teachers’ sense of efficacy can predict organizational commitment. The study shows that teachers’ sense of efficacy must be considered when selecting and training prospective teachers. To become efficient and effective, teaching organizations must pay considerable attention to monitoring and boosting the positive Sense of self-efficacy among their teaching staff.

Background. Self-efficacy is an individual’s belief in their skills and abilities to act in order to reach a chosen goal, irrespective of any obstacles. The motivation to act increases with the rise of self-efficacy. This is connected with sports results achieved by sportsmen. The authors emphasized that the choice of a coping strategy in difficult situations depended on many factors, e.g. personality traits, age, gender, or current physical and mental health. The objective of the paper was to analyse the influence of self-efficacy and locus of control on the choice made by players in terms of their coping strategy in difficult situations. Material and methods. A group of 12 players and 51 students was investigated. The measurement tools were: Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations, Men at Work questionnaire, and Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale. Results and conclusions. The predominant coping strategy among the subjects was the task-oriented style. In both groups, a statistically significant correlation was achieved between self-efficacy and the task-oriented style. A moderate relationship between locus of control and self-efficacy was observed among players.

Opis:
Wprowadzony przez Alberta Bandurę termin: „poczucie własnej skuteczności” to pewnego rodzaju faktyczne przekonanie jednostki o „poradzeniu sobie” w różnych sytuacjach życiowych, to towarzysząca jednostce myśl „potrafię to zrobić”.
School plays an important function in teenagers’ lives. The mission of all educational institutions should be to provide young people with knowledge and prepare them for life in society. School can open doors and offer prospects for a better future. The average teenager spends eight hours a day at school. The school should be friendly and become the main place of development. The labour market is changing, so the task of the school should be to create an entrepreneurial attitude. The psychological term which connects this two facts is called self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is defined as a personal judgement of “how well one can execute courses of action required to deal with prospective situations”. School success is composed of good marks and good functioning in the school environment. Creating school adjustment should be a necessity for teachers, not a choice. “School of Entrepreneurship” is a program for young people to create the self-efficacy in the student life. The program was created by Happy Childhood Foundation in Lublin and was attended by about 1800 students in 2017. This article describes this program and how important it is for students is to improving the self-efficacy and be brought up to entrepreneurship.

Opis:
Objectives: The aim of this two-wave study has been to test the spillover and crossover of job and family demands on changes in perceived stress at work and in the family. Specifically, we proposed that demands from one domain (work or family) spilled over to another domain through interrrole conflict (work–family/family–work conflict) and context-specific self-efficacy. Additionally, we hypothesized that changes in perceived stress were impacted not only by a person’s own demands through interrole conflict but also by the demands of one’s significant other, in the process of crossover. Material and Methods: The study was of dyadic design and it was conducted online, among 130 heterosexual couples, at 2 time points separated by 3 months interval. Hypotheses were verified by means of the path analysis. Results: No support was found for the spillover of job and family demands on changes in perceived stress through interrole conflict and self-efficacy, neither for women nor for men. With regard to the crossover, no support was found for the actor effects, i.e., a person’s demands did not impact changes in one’s own work- and family-related perceived stress but partial support was found for the partner effects, i.e., women’s job demands were associated with men’s changes in work and family-related stress through women’s work–family conflict, and men’s family demands were associated with women’s change in family-related perceived stress through men’s family–work conflict. Conclusions: The study is a longitudinal test of the Spillover–Crossover model and Work–Home Resources model demonstrating that job and family demands are transmitted across domains and across partners in the intimate relationships through the interrole conflict but the nature of this crossover is different for men and women. Opis:
The aim of the study was to answer the question about changes in self-efficacy, coping strategies, and well-being during residential alcohol addiction psychotherapy. Correlations between these changes were also explored. The participants were 60 patients of a specialized alcohol addiction treatment center attending structural-strategic residential group therapy. Self-efficacy, well-being (two indicators: satisfaction with life and depression), and coping strategies (four indicators: problem-focused, emotion-focused, and meaning-focused strategies plus seeking social support) were assessed twice: at admission and then at the end of the treatment, i.e., six weeks later. The tools used for this purpose were, respectively: Schwarzer et al.’s Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), Diener et al.’s Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Gruszczyńska’s Coping Questionnaire (KRS). The results of bivariate latent growth curve analysis with bootstrapping show a decrease in depression as well as an increase in strategies focused on problem, on meaning, and on seeking social support. All these changes were positively correlated, which indicates that the intensification of coping is connected with a decrease in depression. Additionally, pretest coping intensity was shown to moderate changes in satisfaction with life, which increased only in the “low copers” group. For the remaining variables, significant interindividual variances were found regarding both the starting points and the rates of change. Thus, results indicate the need for analyzing changes during treatment from two perspectives: in terms of group means and in terms of variance around these means, which capture interindividual variability in the change process.

Many professions have some identified features or performance rules that are considered characteristic of an expert. However the standards and expectations regarding teachers’ work might not have been clear to the majority of the teachers. The attributes that are demanded or expected from teachers are very diversified and span many fields of expertise. One of the reasons behind it may be the co-existence of multiple paradigms in the social sciences. Those paradigms cannot be applied simultaneously since the disparities between them are often insurmountable. Yet they define the role of a teacher and hence are crucial to the assertion of expertise in teaching. Therefore I come to the conclusion that understanding paradigms and their consequences for the role of a teacher may provide the necessary criteria of performance and a path to becoming an expert teacher. Without the knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts and the meaning of what it is that the teacher is trying to achieve through their performance, the teacher will not be able to work deliberately on their development or to critically reflect on it.

In reference to cultural patterns in collectivistic societies, teaching and learning are greatly influenced by the teachers’ collectivistic or individualistic cultural orientation (Kaur & Noman, 2015). However, in dealing with both audiences and their teaching platforms, a chasm appears between methodologies and their applications since collectivistic societies are reluctant to accept methodologies perceived as mere Western innovations. In other words, a seemingly pedagogical incongruence arises where direct individualistic Western influence is perceived as unsuitable to a collectivistic mindset. One must keep in mind that family members in collectivist societies, who view themselves as part of a group rather than independent individuals, seem to feel more interdependent and mutually responsible for each other. In addition to Vygotski’s assertion that children’s cognitive development is enriched through social interaction with more skilled individuals (1978), Bandura (1982) emphasizes that the degree to which learners believe in their own self-efficacy influences their functioning cognitively, motivationally, emotionally, and their decision making process. Also, self-efficacy is perceived to accelerate the process of adapting to a new environment while learners adopt new cultural practices and consent to norms and expectations. In our exploration, second-language learners (SLLs) from collectivistic societies advance academically—English as a second language included—within the frame of sociocultural theory, since they seem to be motivated by their culturally- induced sense of obligation to honor their parents and other group members. These SLLs are positively influenced by their prior experiences with the group’s perceptions and expectations of their capability to learn an additional language (Bandura & Schunk, 1981; Schunk, 1991). Our research seems to indicate that this outcome is significantly affected by the self-efficacy and self-reliance produced by prior successes in challenging tasks that may have been mandated by the SLL’s elders. In addition, SLLs also seem to succeed in accomplishing more challenging goals as they observe their families’ values and traditions even when they are in a society that enforces individualistic values.

The changes taking place in the modern societies, and in particular the changes on the job market, have resulted in several individual consequences. The particular area of interest is the process of human development, up till now explained with the aid of models based on stages of development. These stages assume that the growth and improvement change in terms of quality and at the same time they marginalize the ideas of repetition, reduction and standstill. The aim of this paper is to discuss the contemporary psychological theories and concepts behind the mechanisms regulating the process of transition from vocational education to work. The paper presents the basic theories of Human Agents by Albert Bandura. In its light the mechanisms of self-efficacy are discussed as the most important regulators of vocational activities. Following that, Human Agents concept continuation by Augustyn Bańka is also cited, in particular, the mechanisms regulating the course of vocational career. Empirical relations between the attitudes of young adults entering job market and their perception of self-efficacy are also presented.

The article originates in the experience of the Children’s University Foundation gained during the participation in the international project STEAM4U, implemented as part of the Erasmus+ program. The aim of the study is, on the one hand, to explain the concept of self-efficacy in the field of education. On the other hand, it outlines the problems of gender and origin inequity in the world of science. The author of the article describes the project initiatives undertaken by the Foundation that enhance children’s self-efficacy and presents selected teaching strategies that can be applied to the activities of children’s universities or other educational institutions. The study presents selected data derived from the research on the children’s self-efficacy, carried out as part of the project activities. The data allow for answering the question of whether the classes at the Children’s University strengthen the children’s self-efficacy and for indicating what types of activities are greatly appreciated by children. The participants’ answers reveal that the most significant factors influencing the enhancement of self-confidence in the area of STEAM are active involvement and the use of learning methods other than those exploited at school. The experience described in the text may be an inspiration for other educational initiatives, encouraging them to enrich the teaching process with strategies oriented on developing the children’s self-efficacy.

Opis:
Working in the support professions is associated with a heavy mental and emotional burden. Social workers face human tragedy, difficult situations, a shortage of resources, and the need to make extremely responsible decisions regarding people’s fate, and they may even be exposed to aggression from demanding clients. These factors may cause unpleasant experiences and emotional tensions among social workers, disrupting the course and structure of professional activities. Self-efficacy may help in coping with this burden. It constitutes the belief that one has the skills allowing them to cope better with problems (cf. Zientek, 2006; Bandura, 2007; Wierzejska, 2018). The article aims, therefore, to determine the role of self-efficacy in explaining the perceived workload of social workers. The obtained research results indicate that social workers’ self-efficacy is a significant predictor of their sense of workload.
Praca w zawodach pomocowych wiąże się z dużym obciążeniem psychicznym i emocjonalnym. Pracownicy socjalni spotykają się z ludzką tragedią, sytuacjami trudnymi, deficytem środków, koniecznością podejmowania niezwykle odpowiedzialnych decyzji dotyczących ludzkich losów, niekiedy narażeni są nawet na agresję roszczeniowych klientów. Czynniki te mogą powodować przykre przeżycia i napięcia emocjonalne pracowników, zakłócać przebieg i strukturę wykonywanych czynności zawodowych. Zientek, 2006; Bandura, 2007; Wierzejska, 2018). Celem artykułu jest więc określenie roli poczucia własnej skuteczności w wyjaśnieniu odczuwanego obciążenia pracą pracowników socjalnych. Uzyskane wyniki badań wskazują, że poczucie własnej skuteczności pracowników socjalnych stanowi istotny predyktor ich poczucia obciążenia pracą.

The aim of the article is an empirical verification of self-efficacy among teachers of early school education. Diagnostic survey was conducted among 44 primary school teachers. The survey used Albert Bandura`s Teacher`s Self Efficacy (TSE) questionnaire, translated by the author of this paper. The results of the study indicate that teachers achieve the highest levels of efficacy in educational skills, and the lowest in parental involvement and ability to create a safe, stimulating work environment in contact with students, other teachers, and school staff. The results also indicate that teachers who are in the process of gaining further degrees of professional advancement show higher self-efficacy than teachers who have already attained the status of qualified teacher.
Celem artykułu jest empiryczna weryfikacja poczucia własnej skuteczności wśród nauczycieli edukacji wczesnoszkolnej. Przeprowadzono badania metodą sondażu diagnostycznego wśród 44 nauczycieli klas początkowych. Zastosowano kwestionariusz Teacher’s Self Efficacy (TSE) Alberta Bandury w tłumaczeniu autorki.

Introduction: Stress experienced by parents of a disabled child can have a negative impact on family relationships. Purpose: Assessment of parents coping with critical situations. Materials and methods: We analyzed 83 families, including 30 families from Poland, 25 families from Belarus and 28 families from France and we used Coping Inventory for Stress Situations (CISS) and The General Self- Efficacy Scale (GSES). Results: After hearing the diagnosis most often parents felt shock (63.3% from Poland, 68% from Belarus and France 85.7%). Main parents' emotions induced by the disability was fatigue (76.7% from Poland, 44% from Belarus and 71.4% from France - p=0.028) and sadness (73.3% from Poland, 40% from Belarus and 28.6% from France - p=0.002). Most often in response to the annoying and stressful child’s behaviour parents tried to admonish (76.7% from Poland, 56% from Belarus and 75% from France) or shout at the child (66.7% from Poland, 24% from Belarus and 17.9% from France p <0.001). The least likely preferred style of coping with stress in all countries was the search for socializing. The highest rate of self-efficiency characterize parents from France, the lowest from Poland. Conclusions: The existence of factors which could significantly affect the level of burn-out syndrome in parents, such as the deterioration of the financial situation (mainly in Belarusian families), sadness, fatigue, insomnia (mainly in Polish families). Parents chose effective strategies of coping, and the predominant style was focused on the task. It has been shown that parents lack the ability to control negative emotions, which in particular affected Polish families (for example, domination of trials to admonish and explain, shouting at the child).

Cars have long been considered goods that symbolize status, yet few studies integrate the impact of symbolic and affective motives on the car buying decisions, with even fewer studies focusing on the infl uence of these motives on Eastern European consumers’ buying behaviour. The aim of this paper is to propose and test an integrative model, derived from the MOA model, which accounts for consumer motives (instrumental, symbolic and affective), constraints and abilities. The model is tested on a sample of Romanian consumers owning a driving licence. The data analysis was based on structural equation modelling. Findings indicate that symbolic and instrumental car use motives positively infl uence the intention to buy a car sooner, while affective motives have a negative infl uence, leading consumers to postpone the intention to buy a car. Results also show a signifi cant positive effect of self-effi cacy on intention implementation. Thus, the stimulation of symbolic motives may increase car buying intentions, while the presence of affective motives may lead consumers to still enjoy their current car. The paper contributes to expanding our understanding of consumer behaviour through an integrative model, which includes psychological motives, external factors and consumer abilities.

The paper presents a quasi-experimental study clarifying the variability of maths teachers’ sense of self-efficacy based on their personal theories regarding differences in mathematical giftedness between girls and boys. Didactic self-efficacy is understood as a judgment of the possibility of teaching all learners. A ‘personal theory’ is understood as a verbalized group of judgments regarding the source of mathematical giftedness among girls and boys. The two variables, i.e. ‘personal theories’ and ‘biological sex’, were introduced in a two-factor NOVA model. A strong main effect for ‘personal theories’ was noted, while there was no statistically significant effect for biological sex. The result shows that gender stereotypes can weaken teachers’ sense of didactic self-efficacy, and consequently block pupils’ opportunity for development.

Introduction: The aim of the presented research was to check whether there is a connection between teachers’ self-efficacy and their psychological well-being from a holistic (hedonic and eudaimonic) perspective. Method: The study involved 100 teachers who were asked to fill in the following research tools with proven psychometric properties: the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and the Psychological Well-being Scale. Results: The obtained data confirm that there is a connection between self-efficacy belief, and hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. The degree of professional promotion grades modifies the relationships considered. Conclusions: The psychological well-being of teachers is significantly associated with their evaluation of efficacy, which may have a positive impact on the effectiveness of teachers’ professional functioning and the achievements of their students.

Background Studies suggest that teachers’ ability to perform their work tasks well is one of the most important antecedents of the achievements of students. This project was focused on verifying an underresearched relation among basic psychological needs satisfaction and frustration, the way the teachers use their time to recover from work stressors, with their performance and self-efficacy. Material and Methods The participants were 503 teachers from a representative sample of schools in Poland. In the study performance (Individual Work Performance Questionnaire), self-efficacy (Norwegian Teachers Self-Efficacy Scale), basic psychological needs (Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction and Frustration Scale), and recovery processes (Recovery Experience Questionnaire) were measured. Results As expected, the results showed that there is a strong relation between basic psychological needs and teachers’ individual performance and self-efficacy. However, this relation is partially mediated by some recovery processes, mostly control and detachment. Conclusions The results prove that, to some extent, the relation between basic psychological needs satisfaction and teachers’ performance and self-efficacy could be explained by the stress recovery processes undertaken by teachers in their free time. This study focused on explaining these relations and suggesting ideas for further studies in this domain.

Purpose: Studies find that psychosocial safety climate is positively associated with workplace safety behaviors. However, the mechanism through which psychosocial safety climate exerts its effect needs further investigation. Therefore, this study investigated the indirect effect of work self-efficacy in the relationship between psychosocial safety climate and workplace safety behaviors. Methodology: Participants, who were 155 bank workers (F=66.5%; mean age= 33.9, SD=6.4), responded to an online survey of workplace safety behavior scale (WSBS), psychosocial safety climate scale (PSC-12), and work self-efficacy scale (WSES). Results: Results from correlational analyses revealed that psychosocial safety climate positively related to workplace safety behaviors. Moreover, work self-efficacy positively correlated to workplace safety behaviors. The mediation analysis using Hayes Process Macros indicated an indirect effect of work self-efficacy in the relationship between psychosocial safety climate and workplace safety behaviors. Creating a psychosocially safe climate may enhance bank workers’ safety behaviors in the period after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The aim of the study was to confi rm the mediation effects of the task-specifi c self-effi cacy on the relationship between the general self-effi cacy and intention and planning considering treatment. The study comprised 265 subjects, of which 165 were post-mastectomy women and 100 patients hospitalized due to acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The variables were assessed using the Generalized Self-Effi cacy Scale (GSES) and tools developed to examine the context of treatment. The data were analyzed using the bootstrapping procedure. The results confi rmed the indirect effects of task-specifi c self-effi cacy, both in women making a decision to undergo breast reconstruction, and in patients after ACS formulating intention to change risk behaviours. As smoking was considered to be a moderator in the post-ACS group, the obtained associations were observed only among the patients declaring quitting smoking. In view of the fact that taskspecifi c self-effi cacy is susceptible to context (e.g. it may depend on quitting smoking), it is useful to assess it in order to increase treatment effectiveness.

The sudden loss of mobility is always an extremely difficult situation, since it entails many consequences. In the process of dealing with it, the individual’s predispositions play a significant role. Three predispositions seem to be crucial for maintaining emotional balance, accepting the existing health situation and coping with challenges: dispositional optimism, a sense of self-efficacy and psychological resilience. The aim of our study was to compare the levels of these individual predispositions and dimensions that affected the ability of the study group to cope with the sudden loss of mobility as a result of a traffic accident, and to determine the relationships between them. The study group consisted of 72 adults (36 women and 36 men), who suffered from full paralysis of the lower limbs due to spinal cord injury caused by a traffic accident. The research tools used were the GSES Scale, the LOT-R Test, the SPP-25 N Scale, the Beck Depression Scale, the AIS Scale and the CISS Questionnaire. The women in our study exhibited lower levels of all three of the selected predispositions. They also present more severe symptoms of depression and a lower acceptance of the loss of mobility. When facing stressful situations, they prefer the emotion-oriented style and, less frequently, the avoidant style, and they reveal a lower tendency to choose the task-oriented response. Dispositional optimism, self-efficacy and resilience positively correlate with acceptance of the disability and the use of a task-oriented style to cope with stress. However, they correlate negatively with the severity of depressive symptoms and a style focused on emotions. Gender is a moderator of relationships between the studied parameters.

Research background: Although perceived barriers are considered one of the central constructs in entrepreneurship research, most previous studies only examine the direct effect of perceived barriers on attitudes and/or intentions to become entrepreneurs. Little attention is paid to how perceived barriers can weaken individuals' translation from entrepreneurial intentions to actual behaviors. Purpose of the article: This research aims to adopt the Social Cognitive Career Theory and a moderated mediation model to bridge the entrepreneurial intention-action link, investigate the moderation effects of perceived barriers on this link and the mediation path from entrepreneurial self-efficacy to entrepreneurial behavior via entrepreneurial intention. Methods: A valid sample of 1,698 Vietnamese respondents with real working and business experiences through the stratified random sampling with three stages and PROCESS macro approach have been used to examine the moderated mediation effect of perceived barriers on the entrepreneurial self-efficacy-intention-behavior linkages. Findings & value added:  The findings of this study shed new light on entrepreneurial literature by applying the Social Cognitive Career Theory to illustrate the moderated mediation effects of perceived barriers and entrepreneurial intention in the relationship between entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial behavior. Particularly, the translation from entrepreneurial intentions into start-up actions was found to became weaker when perceived barriers was high. Moreover, perceived barriers were also found to negatively moderate the indirect effects of entrepreneurial self-efficacy on start-up behaviors through entrepreneurial intentions. The findings of our study also provide several essential recommendations for policymakers and practitioners to encourage individuals' business venture creations and enhance entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Celem niniejszego opracowania było przedstawienie psychometrycznych właściwości Norweskiej Skali Poczucia Własnej Skuteczności Nauczycieli (Norwegian Teachers Self-Efficacy Scale – NTSES) – narzędzia do pomiaru takich przekonań w grupie nauczycieli szkół podstawowych, gimnazjalnych i średnich. Materiał i metody Dane zebrano wśród 404 nauczycieli. Med. Pr. 2017;68(6):743–755
Background Self-efficacy refers to different spheres of human functioning and to different tasks, including teaching activity. It is regarded as an important personal resource related to coping with stress. This paper was aimed at presenting psychometric properties of the Norwegian Teachers Self-Efficacy Scale (NTSES), related to these beliefs in the group of teachers. Material and Methods Psychometric properties of the scale were evaluated on the basis of the data obtained from 404 teachers of elementary and middle schools. Results Our analyses of exploratory and confirmatory factor revealed a 3-dimensional structure, but not a 6-dimensional structure of NTSES as obtained in the original Norwegian study. They also showed high reliability and construct validity coefficients. Teachers self-efficacy was positively correlated with general self-efficacy, internal locus of control and negatively with job burnout. Conclusions Although NTSES can be used in the study of Polish teachers, this should be done with great caution and the measure of global index of NTSES should be used. Additional studies on a larger sample of teachers are recommended. Med Pr 2017;68(6):743–755

Self-efficacy is a well-known and researched concept originating from the social-cognitive theory of Albert Bandura (1977, 1997). However, it still seems to be able to promote interesting reflections that are important for language education in higher education, both in teacher and learner activities. According to a number of studies learners acquire important skills and attitudes that are linked to a high degree of self-efficacy: they are highly motivated to learn, set ambitious goals for themselves, and are more persistent and committed to learning than those with a low degree of self-efficacy. The text analyses the results of a quantitative-qualitative study conducted among students participating in foreign language classes at the University of Warsaw. The collected data is analysed with the aim of answering the following research questions: What is the level of self-efficacy in written expression in a foreign language at B2-C2 levels? How do the students perceive the teacher-lecturer’s actions to strengthen their sense of self-efficacy? Do they see strengthening their involvement in written expression as a key element of self-efficacy? In addition, we are also interested in their opinion towards the possibilities of Chat GPT in this regard. The results are used to propose some teaching activities that will enhance students’ self-efficacy in written expression at B2-C2 levels as an important motivational factor which may result in a sense of agency.

Opis:
Background. Many studies documented an increase in the alcohol consumption among athletes, particularly among representatives of some disciplines, such as team sports. Objective. The aim of the study was to analyse the consumption of alcohol beverages among Polish elite team sport athletes, depending on their sex, age and selected personality traits (general self-efficacy and health locus of control). Material and Methods. The study included 517 Polish team sport athletes (251 women an 266 men). The subjects were examined with an original alcoholic beverage intake survey, General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales (MHLC). Relationship between the intake of alcoholic beverages and explanatory variables (sex, age, psychological traits) was determined on multivariate analysis of variance and analysis of regression. Results. Beer turned out to be an alcoholic beverage which the surveyed athletes consumed most often (a few times per month on average). Wine, spirits and alcoholic cocktails were consumed less often (once a month on average). Multivariate analysis showed that consumption of wine, including dry wine, increased significantly with age of the study subjects (p<0.001). Women significantly less frequently considered beer and vodka (p<0.001), whereas men significantly less often preferred wine (p<0.05). The level of general self-efficacy did not influence the intake of alcoholic beverages (p>0.05). Lower levels of Internality were associated with less frequent consumption of beer (p<0.001), and lower scores for Powerful Others with lower intakes of dry wine (p<0.001) and vodka (p<0.01). Lower scores for Chance showed a significant association with lesser preference for alcoholic cocktails (p<0.05). Conclusions. The frequency and structure of otherwise relatively limited intake of alcoholic beverages among elite team sport athletes were influenced by their sex, age and health locus of control.
Wprowadzenie. Cel. Celem badań była analiza częstości konsumpcji napojów alkoholowych w zależności od płci i wieku oraz wybranych cech osobowości (uogólnionego poczucia własnej skuteczności i umiejscowienia poczucia kontroli zdrowia) w grupie sportowców wyczynowo trenujących gry zespołowe. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w grupie 517 polskich sportowców trenujących gry zespołowe (251 kobiet i 266 mężczyzn). W badaniach zastosowano: autorski kwestionariusz częstości spożycia napojów alkoholowych oraz Skalę Uogólnionej Własnej Skuteczności (GSES) i Wielowymiarową Skalę Umiejscowienia Kontroli Zdrowia (MHLC). Wyniki. Spośród napojów alkoholowych badani sportowcy ogółem najczęściej (średnio kilka razy w miesiącu) spożywali piwo, a rzadziej (średnio raz miesiącu) wino, napoje wysokoprocentowe i koktajle alkoholowe. Kobiety istotnie rzadziej wybierały piwo i wódkę (p<0,001), a mężczyźni wino (p<0,05). Poziom uogólnionej własnej skuteczności nie wykazywał związku z częstością spożycia napojów alkoholowych (p>0,05). Niski poziom wewnętrznej kontroli zdrowia był istotnie związany z mniejszą częstością konsumpcji piwa (p<0,001), a niski poziom kontroli zdrowia umiejscowionej w innych osobach był istotnie związany z mniejszą konsumpcją wina wytrawnego (p<0,001) i wódki (p<0,01). Niski poziom kontroli zdrowia umiejscowionej w przypadku był istotnie związany z mniejszą konsumpcją koktajli alkoholowych (p<0,05). Wnioski. Relatywnie ograniczona skala konsumpcji napojów alkoholowych wśród sportowców wyczynowo trenujących dyscypliny zespołowe wykazywała zróżnicowaną częstość i strukturę w zależności od płci i wieku oraz umiejscowienia poczucia kontroli zdrowia.

Opis:
Background. Increased nutritional demands of athletes should be covered with a variable well-balanced diet, supported by dietary supplements stimulating synthesis of energy, development of muscle mass and strength, and improving physical capacity. Objective. The aim of this study was to analyze an association between the level of general self-efficacy and dietary supplement use among Polish athletes practicing American football on a competitive basis. Material and methods. The study included the group of 100 athletes (20-30 years of age, mean 24.27±2.76 years) who practiced American football on a competitive basis. The popularity of various dietary supplements was determined with an original survey, and the level of general self-efficacy with General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) by Schwarzer et al. Statistical analysis, conducted with Statistica 10.0 PL software, included intergroup comparisons with the Chi-square test. Results. Isotonic drinks (74%), vitamin (65%) and mineral supplements (50%) and protein concentrates (53%) turned out to be the most popular ergogenic supplements among the American footballers. The group of less popular supplements included caffeine and/or guarana (44%), joint supporting supplements (40%), BCAA amino acids (39%), creatine (36%), carbohydrate concentrates (30%) and omega-3 fatty acids (30%). Analysis of a relationship between the popularity of ergogenic supplements and general self-efficacy showed that the athletes presenting with lower levels of this trait used multivitamin supplements significantly more often than did the persons characterized by lower self-efficacy levels (p<0.05). Conclusions. The popularity of some dietary supplements varied depending on the general self-efficacy level of the athletes; the popularity of vitamins was significantly higher among the sportsmen who presented with lower levels of this trait.
Wstęp. Różnorodna i zbilansowana dieta powinna służyć pokryciu zwiększonych potrzeb żywieniowych sportowców, a jej uzupełnieniem mogą być żywieniowe środki wspomagające, stymulujące generowanie energii, rozwój masy i siły mięśniowej oraz poprawiające wydolność fizyczną. Cel. Celem badań była ocena zależności między poczuciem własnej uogólnionej skuteczności a stosowaniem żywieniowych środków wspomagających w grupie polskich sportowców uprawiających futbol amerykański. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w grupie 100 polskich zawodników (20-30 lat, średnia 24,27±2,76) wyczynowo trenujących futbol amerykański. Stosowanie żywieniowych środków wspomagających oceniono w oparciu o przygotowany kwestionariusz. Do pomiaru poczucia uogólnionej skuteczności wykorzystano standaryzowaną Skalę Uogólnionej Własnej Skuteczności (GSES) wg Schwarzera i wsp. Analizę wyników przeprowadzono za pomocą testu Chi2 w programie Statistica 10.0 Pl. Wyniki.
