The objective of the present study was to demonstrate the effect of dietary resistant dextrins, as potential prebiotics, on the intestinal microflora of young rats. Enzyme-resistant dextrin, prepared by heating of potato starch in the presence of hydrochloric (0.1% dsb) and tartaric (40% dsb) acid at 130ºC for 2 h (CA-dextrin). The experiment was performed on 24 Wistar male rats at 3-wk of age, divided by analogues in three experimental groups (control, starch and dextrin). Analyses determined the overall bacterial counts and the counts of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides and Clostridium strains within the feces and cecal contents of rats using fluorescence in situ hybridization method. CA-dextrin had no effect on primary growth indicators (body weight, body weight gain, dietary consumption) or the mass of the small intestine and the cecum, but dextrins caused a reduction in pH and the concentration of ammonia within the cecal contents. That supplementation of diet with resistant dextrins had a positive effect on composition of intestinal microflora in rats. It increased the counts of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains both in the feces and in the cecum. Moreover, it reduced the counts of Clostridium and Bacteroides strains. These results may suggest that resistant dextrins exerted a prebiotic-like effect in the large intestine.

In the present study, enzyme-resistant dextrin, prepared by heating of potato starch in the presence of hydrochloric (0.1% dsb) and citric (0.1% dsb) acid at 130ºC for 3 h (CA-dextrin), was tested as a source of carbon for probiotic lactobacilli and bifidobacteria cultured with intestinal bacteria isolated from feces of three healthy 70-year old volunteers. The dynamics of growth of bacterial monocultures in broth containing citric acid (CA)-modified dextrin were estimated. It was also investigated whether lactobacilli and bifidobacteria cultured with intestinal bacteria in the presence of resistant dextrin would be able to dominate the intestinal isolates. Prebiotic fermentation of resistant dextrin was analyzed using prebiotic index (PI). In co-cultures of intestinal and probiotic bacteria, the environment was found to be dominated by the probiotic strains of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, which is a beneficial effect.

W wyniku pracy badawczej opracowano materiał włóknisty, o strukturze przestrzennej, przeznaczony na warstwy przeciwuderzeniowe w ochraniaczach stosowanych w ubiorach i wyposażeniu ochronnym osób uprawiających sporty urazogenne. Materiał otrzymano w wyniku nowatorskiego zastosowania proekologicznych włókien kokosowych, o dużej zawartości lignin oraz środka wiążącego z udziałem kopolimeru etylenu i octanu winylu z dodatkiem środków porotwórczych. Opracowany materiał został zgłoszony pod nazwą Impactex w 2005 r. do Urzędu Patentowego jako projekt wynalazczy nr P-374169. Jego skuteczność w zakresie tłumienia energii uderzenia potwierdziły rezultaty badań przeprowadzonych na stanowisku, służącym do oceny zdolności amortyzacji uderzenia ochraniaczy sportowych. Oryginalna konstrukcja stanowiska umożliwia taka ocenę przy jednoczesnym zastosowaniu dwóch metod badawczych. Została również zaproponowana nowatorska metoda oceny rozkładu siły pod ochraniaczem, podczas badań na stanowisku, wykorzystująca cienkościenne czujniki ciśnienia. Procedura badań ochraniaczy przeciwuderzeniowych przewiduje także, możliwość porównania wytypowanych wskaźników z przyjętymi w literaturze biomechanicznej wybranymi kryteriami dla określania poziomu ludzkiej tolerancji na uszkodzenie danego obszaru ciała.
As a result of research work, the fibrous material featuring 3D-structure has been developed and dedicated for impact-resistant layers of protectors applied in clothing and protective equipment for individuals practising traumatic sports. The material was gained by innovative applying eco-friendly coconut fibres, reach of lignin and binding means with co-polymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate with porogenous agent. The developed material has been submitted in 2005 under the name of IMPACTEX to the Patent Office as the invention project no. P-374169. Its efficiency on attenuating the energy of hitting was confirmed by the results of tests executed on a workstation designed for assaying the sports protectors' capability to suppress impacts. The original design of the workstation allows for such an assay with two test methods applied simultaneously. An innovative method of assaying the force distribution under the protector was also suggested, while testing on the workstation with thin-walled pressure sensors used. The testing procedure for impact-resistant protectors includes also the possibility of comparison selected indices to the selected criteria accepted by biomechanical bibliography to determine level of human toleration for injury of given area of body.

To reduce heat losses from buildings various methods are used. One of them is applying so called “thermal resistant paints”. These paints can be put in principle on the inner but also on outer surfaces of building external walls. The aforementioned paints are put on a surface in the similar way as other paints in building construction technology and form a thin insulation layer. The acting of this paints consists in causing a noticeable temperature drop within this layer and simultaneously on the wall surface. This work presents the experimental rig, measurement procedures and selected measurement results.

The increase in number of antibiotic resistant bacteria poses a serious environmental and health problem. The development of microbial resistance is intensified by the widespread use of antibiotics in medicine, veterinary, farming and aquaculture. The wastewater treatment plants receiving the wastewater from hospitals, slaughterhouses, farms, pharmaceutical industry and houses can be potential places of spreading of antibiotic resistant genes. The molecular mechanisms of the bacterial resistance, including the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistant genes and the presence of mobile genetic elements can be responsible for the increase in antibiotic resistance during wastewater treatment. The aim of this study was to analyze the phenomenon of bacterial resistance to selected β-lactam antibiotics (ESBL) by detecting the genes that determine this resistance. The PCR method was used to analyze the occurrence of two genes: blaPER and blaGES in wastewater samples. It was revealed that the resistant/total bacteria ratio was significantly higher in the effluent compared with the influent wastewater. Genes blaPER and blaGES were isolated from several strains predominating in both aeration tank (5% and 20% respectively) and effluent wastewater (15% and 12% respectively).

Many genes responsible for the disease development were identified from transposon-tagging, micro-array, and proteomics analyses. Here, we introduce especially the genes required for the initiation of pathogenic life cycle, the suppression of otherwise induction of resistance responses, massive production of virulence factors in plant pathogenic bacteria and an unique plant gene responsible for the development of canker symptom. From these findings we came to raise some new strategies to construct disease-resistant plants by genetic engineering.

Nosocomial infections caused by strains Acinetobacter baumannii strands are a growing clinical problem. The occurrence of multidrug-resistant strands is observed and that limits the ways of therapy considerably. The aim of the study was to determine the rate of infection and susceptibility spectrum of the species Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from patients treated at Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Hospital in Zgierz with particular emphasis on surgical wards. Materials and methods. The material consisted of Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were obtained from samples of materials from patients treated at Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Hospital in Zgierz from January to December 2011. Isolated bacterial strains were cultured at microbiological substrates. Isolates were identified to species using the VITEK 2 GN card (bioMérieux) and Vitek 2 automated system (bioMérieux). Susceptibility towards antibiotics of particular strains was determined by the means of AST NO 93 card. In the case of resistance towards carbapenem, the MIC was marked by E-test with Mueller Hinton substrate. The occurrence of MBL was verified by the means of disc system with Mueller Hinton substrate. Results. We have shown that total number of Acinetobacter baumannii infections at hospital was 140 (10,31% of total results of cultures). Percentage of Acinetobacter baumannii infections at wards: Intensive Care Unit 48%, Surgical Departments 20%, Internal Diseases Department 16%, Neurology 13%, other wards - 3%. The susceptibility percentage of Acinetobacter Baumannii against antibiotics: colistin 90%, imipenem 64%, meropenem 43%, ampicillin-sulbactam 28%, amikacin 27%, gentamicin 24%, cefepime 9%, ceftazidime 7%, ciprofloxacin 7% Conclusions. Acinetobacter baumannii infections are a significant proportion of nosocomial infections. Most relate to surgical wards and ICUs. Acinetobacter baumannii is resistant against most antibiotics. The highest percentage of sensitivity demonstrated for colistin and carbapenems

Opis:
Explosives with improved high temperature properties are usually referred to as 'thermally stable explosives' or heat-resistant explosives. They are safer, more reliable and more stable at elevated temperatures and find applications in modern Ordnance, Space and Nuclear applications. This paper discusses general approaches for the synthesis of thermally stable explosives, their properties and specific applications. This paper also gives a comparative account of the properties of some of the most thermally stable explosives reported so far. Based on their ease of synthesis, properties (mainly stability at elevated temperatures and insensitivity to impact, friction and percussion) and cost, TATB is considered as a benchmark, thermally stable explosive which is discussed in detail. Furthermore, this review also describes the synthesis and properties of BTDAONAB which does not melt below 550 °C and is considered a better thermally stable explosive than TATB. Finally, a new line of research in this field in the years to come is also highlighted.

The technical condition of the blades has a critical influence on the reliability and life span of a gas turbine and an engine into which it is built in. The main causes of blade damage are overheating, creeping, thermal fatigue, high temperature corrosion, etc. It is often caused by adverse operational conditions or manufacturing defect, e.g. using insufficiently durable types of heat-resistant protective coatings or applied in an improper manner on the blade material. Reaction of coatings and blade material to mechanical and thermal loads depends mainly on the operating temperature of the turbine. Selection of a protective coating and material to manufacture a blade with an assumed strength must take into account its mechanical and thermal properties at maximum aerofoil temperature. The article presents characteristic forms of operational damages to the gas turbine blades of a turbojet aero engine. Distinguished were operational factors and their influence on the technical condition of coatings during the engine operation period. An influence of excess exhaust gas temperature on the condition of the heat-resistant blade layer was shown. Shown were also results of morphology tests of coating degradation types. Results of micro-structure tests of the blade superalloy after damage to the heat-resistant coating were also presented.
