    Opis:
    The article shows literary and documentary presentations of the first years of building Nowa Huta in the context of the avant-garde gesture of blurring the traces of the past and attempting at establishing a completely new beginning. Another equally important goal is to show how Nowa Huta, a model city of socialist visions, was organized by the dialectic of materialization and dematerialization which governed both the rhetoric of architectural visions and descriptions of human – especially women’s – corporeality. The author combines idealized (and therefore immaterial) approach whose ideological senses are projected onto the architecture of a utopian city with the socialistic approach to the body as a precisely shaped form whose biological and generally material qualities are disciplined. The author describes a few attempts of bodily disobedience to the dictate of the form, exposing the gap between postulated construction plans and the reality of everyday life entangled in the materiality of architecture and the biological nature of the body.

    The article is an attempt at providing an interpretation of Natalia Malek’s work Kord in the context of sculpture and materiality. Starting from outlining a definition of a sculpture as a situation and a meeting, the author tries to demonstrate how a poetical language stages the sculptural, departing from the tradition of concrete poetry in favour of openness and potentiality of a poem. The essential contexts for the following argument are both elements of the study of objects and the feminist approach to corporality, which stimulate thinking in terms of the matter and materiality and enable us to interpret Malek’s project as addressing dualisms of Western metaphysics, as well as calling for a different type of reading. The category of “material vision” (de Man) is for the author of the article a point of departure, however, in result, it turns out to be insufficient and gives way to the project of reading understood as a “sculptural situation”.

    This paper explores the interdependency between digital matter and the representational or mimetic layer of the digital game object. The main aim is to foreground the mechanisms by which the representationalelements of the game world emerge from the materiality of the process of play. These mechanisms are examined from the perspective of the ontology of the game object. The issue of digital materiality will be linked with the aesthetical explorations of Tadeusz Kantor, who emphasised the relation between the materiality of the theatre and its fictional elements. As the main example of this analysis, I will focus on Undertale (Toby Fox, 2015) as an example of a game that plays with the boundaries between the fictional world being presented and the elements of digital materiality that are usually hidden from the player’s sight.

    The discussion initiated in the 1960s by McLuhan concerning the interrelationship between what is said (orality) and what is written (literacy) has been replaced by a new approach focusing on the connection between image and text. This shift of attention results, among others, from the increasing role of technical media and computers and the decreasing role of the traditional written culture in the shape of books and print. The contemporary media are becoming something more than just a passive tool for information transmission. The text and the word itself are undergoing technologization, as Walter Ong, has put it, and they are often accompanied by the image. Linguistics cannot ignore these changes, and investigates the evolving materiality of communication, focusing on design, the so-called text performance, visual layer, and the whole emerging from both the image and text. The last two are becoming so strictly connected, especially in internet hypertexts, that the phrase “iconic turn” is often used. Apart from that, there appears text fragmentation, which leads to changes in the process of reception: ordinary reading recedes replaced by holistic reading (based on whole images).

    Opis:
    The aim of the paper is to point out certain analogies between de Saussure’s theoretical reflection on the ontic properties of expressions and the corresponding old Chinese and Indian concepts. Following a review of de Saussure’s ideas, the author proceeds to present their Eastern analogues. The main focus is turned to the fact that the Chinese Moists as well as the Indian grammarians and philosophers elicited proportion as the key to the understanding of the mechanism of language. The Sanscrit grammarians, the philosophers of Mīmāṃsa as well as, most probably, Gongsun Long in China saw clearly the invariant and non-material nature of expressions. The Buddhist logicians and the Moists also pointed to the oppositional character of expressions as constitutive for language.

    The article is an attempt to understand the need to develop methodological and theoretical tools for defining and underlining the meaning of a comic book’s material quality. Assuming that the modern tactile and sensual aspects of a physical manifestation of the comic book medium are becoming one of its most important specifics, then the author, is trying to explore the scientific consequences of a turn towards focusing on the “materialistic” inside the comic book industry.     In this article we analyze the role played by materiality in the reproduction of caring practices in urban neighborhoods. Our theoretical aim is to show the capacity of social practice theory to combine and reintegrate the perspectives of sociology, anthropology, and geography through the concept of neighborhood caring, which refers to the behavioral, symbolic, and spatial dimension of people’s attitudes toward their neighbors as well as to the place they live in. Based on qualitative research in six urban housing estates in three cities, we want to examine four modes through which materialities are entangled in the invisible work of the everyday collective accomplishments of neighborhood well-being, that is: (1) integrating individual performances into collective endeavors of caring practices; (2) creating conditions for the orchestration (or disorganization) of practices of caring undertaken by a variety of entities (i.e., private and public, institutional and non-institutional); (3) being an element of social practice involved in the collective processes of negotiating and reflecting; and (4) delivering an emotional component facilitating or hampering day-to-day relations and interactions as preconditions of practices of neighborly care.

    Sound art is a term used to classify works which incorporate sound as the main artistic means of communication with the audience. If we look at the presence of sound in art from a historical viewpoint, our attention can be drawn by Cabaret Voltaire and the performances of Dadaist on its stage. Sound became also an element of performances, and constituted an integral part of many of them. However, it only accompanied the artworks and was not an independent object of art. The text focuses on materiality which is an integral part of Sergei Tcherepin’s sound artworks. In his artworks, a material object and sound constitute a specific unity.
    Sound art to pojęcie określające prace, w których dźwięk jest dominującym środkiem artystycznym. Z historycznego punktu widzenia, naszą uwagę może przyciągnąć Cabaret Voltaire i występy dadaistów na jego scenie. Dźwięk stał się też elementem performansów i stanowił integralną część wielu z nich. Jednakże stanowił element „towarzyszący”, a nie był samodzielnym „obiektem” sztuki. Artykuł skupia się na materialnym elemencie towarzyszącym pracom Sergeia Tcherepina, amerykańskiego artysty, którego twórczość zaliczana jest do sound art. W jego pracach materialny obiekt i dźwięk stanowią swoistą jedność.

    The article traces the evolution of the status of objects, understood as a carrier of creative expression, from the avant-garde concepts of Duchamp readymades or surrealistic “disturbed objects” to neo-avant-garde installations (Spoerri, Anselmo, Černý, Jasielski, Schneider, Bałka, Hasior). The most important point ofreference for the considerations is the belief in the specific autonomy that the object acquires in avant-garde and neo-avant-garde theories. Moving constantly from a usable to artistic context - or at least participating in negotiations between these spheres - an object must also be seen in terms of everyday cultural practices. The author uses the theory of “smart object” developed by artists and art theoreticians (Agata Pankiewicz, Marcin Przybyłka, Roch Sulima) to show relationships between useable objects, which are intentionally non-artistic, but which are in the field of artistic activities (smart objects), with strictly aesthetic artifacts. Considering several selected properties (the degree of interference of the subject and the recipient in the structure of the object, its collagelike and temporary nature, external appearance, the way of functioning in space, the location on the axis of utilitarian / aesthetic), the author tries to extract those aspects of materiality that determine the status object. As it turns out in the case of some conceptual works, it is difficult to distinguish clearly between their artistic and “smart” dimensions. It leads to the elimination of the boundaries between art and non-art, but it also contributes to the conviction that the material nature of the object itself is in a way a guarantee of the “conceptual” character of the work, especially in the era of the dominance of the digital circulation.

    This article places the category of mindfulness in the field of public humanities and social sciences, moving beyond its therapeutic-meditative and individualistic discourse. Searching for different conceptualisations of mindfulness, the author explores reflection focused on people’s political nature rather than their subjectivity as individuals. The thus placed mindfulness allows us to, firstly, make a claim for sociological imagination (Mills), and secondly, oppose to humanities being pushed to esoteric peripheries and having their scientific value questioned. To analyse mindfulness as our duty towards the world, the author refers to Richard Sennett’s sociology and Tim Ingold’s anti-hylomorphic project. Both concepts promote focus on the material and processual character of the world to enable us to live in it ethically and ecologically. Mindfulness is understood here as striving for the coordination of mind and body, theory and practice, conceptual (non-material) work and physical labour. It is about focusing on cooperation and respecting inequality. In this sense it may be perceived as an element of sophisticated work and a mechanism that prevents alienation.

    Spiritual, metaphysical and religious quests seem to be one of the most important aims of writing and literature. At the same time, literature created by outstanding individuals is naturally predestined to arouse quest and desires. The fundamental aim of this article is to explain, on the basis of the works of Jerzy Hulewicz, the ways in which literary creativity is able/not able to face the metaphysical emptiness mentioned by Jürgen Habermas.
    Omawiając fenomen twórczości Tadeusza Micińskiego (1873-1918), Jan Stur (1895-1923) napisał: „Zrozumieli wieszcze rzecz najważniejszą: należy powiedzieć ludowi, by czynił w ten a ten sposób dla dobra ojczyzny. Spyta lud: czemu mamy dla ojczyzny cierpieć i ofiarować dobytek nasz i wygodę naszą? A wonczas – materjalizm nie wystarczy.

    This article is a study of the domestic monetary and financial life of young middle-class couples in Warsaw, Poland, and its suburbs. We use ethnographic evidence presented as case studies to illuminate the practices in which our interlocutors actively appropriate, mobilize, and transform money and finance to pursue moral visions of the good life. The article focuses on the household understood in processual terms of ongoing negotiations between moral and market dimensions. The first section is focused on the ways in which young couples perform relational work aimed at achieving or maintaining moral order. Couples match the diverse possible uses of money at home to their changing notions of the kind of couple they are or wish to become. The second section proceeds from the observation of a widening gap between rising middle-class aspirations and economic possibilities in contemporary Poland and explores the practices of negotiating various forms of assistance from parental households. The third and final section argues that the incursion of technologies into domestic life means that artifacts like software or digital banking increasingly materialize and mediate morality and thus actively contribute to the shaping of the household as a project of a good life.

    The paper ponders over the issue of memory and urban space. It shows how these categories have been discussed in the literature and how they are connected to the problem of place identity. The paper also highlights the need to appreciate and assess the physical aspect of objects, which act as memory markers in the urban space. The author argues that what is being memorialised and conveyed as meaning is the past lived experience. As a case in point, two memory acts are analysed in the paper, clearly showing the interdependence of various temporalities in the anniversary celebrations. In the festivities celebrating the 100th (in 1881) and 150th (in 1931/2) anniversaries of the consecration of the Lutheran church in Warsaw, the capital of the Kingdom of Poland in the Russian partition and later the capital of a resurrected independent Polish state after 1918, the different present-oriented needs were mirrored in the narratives and commemorations of the past. Idiosyncratic visions of the past help make the small and vulnerable community of Lutherans in an otherwise primarily Roman Catholic environment more coherent, as its members may lay claim to history and construct and stabilise their identification process as descendants of past generations. Moreover, the material fabric of the church seems to be an indispensable factor. The parishioners’ lived experience appears to be a crucial component of commemorations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

    Getting at the tacit understandings of an artful practice is critical in coming to understand the processes of creativity. To achieve this, the researcher, specifically the ethnographer, must place herself in the position of the maker, that is she must herself, make and create. This article provides an account of arriving at the methodological imperative of in situ ethnographic research through actual ethnographic research on the relation of maker and material. From an in situ position, it theorizes the modalities of expression in practice, from problem-solving, to personal style, to the intentional drawing in of embodied histories in practice. This incorporation of varying embodied histories into a current practice is then explored as the possibility for affecting what is recognized in the field as ”new” or ”innovative”. We will see, however, that is affect is grounded more in the corporeal revealing of unexpected aspects of the material worked up.

Tekst jest ciałem i czytanie jest cielesne. Doskonałym exemplum tak pojmowanej synestetycznej wrażliwości tekstu jest intersensualna proza Vladimira Nabokova. W krytyce oraz praktyce przekładu Nabokova, podobnie jak w translatologicznej koncepcji Douglasa Robinsona (The Somatics of Translation), to właśnie synestetycznie odczuwana materialność języka staje się kluczowym kryterium doboru leksykalnych oraz syntaktycznych środków w tłumaczeniu. W obu przypadkach synestezja okazuje się zasadą językowego instynktu tłumacza. Synestezja ukazuje się jako strategia językowej przyjemności, stanowiącej somatyczny impuls obcowania z tekstem. Barthes, Nabokov oraz Robinson wskazują na synestezyjne odczuwanie języka jako źródło translatorskiej intuicji, czytelniczej wrażliwości oraz tekstualnej przyjemności, pojmowanej jako integralna składowa doświadczeniowego wymiaru lektury oraz przekładu.
    In describing the delightful pleasures of reading and writing, Roland Barthes juggles multi-modal sensual metaphors, engaging and entangling the senses in a synaesthetic embrace: words have flavour, a texture, making us giddy, blush and aroused. A text is a body and reading a sensual experience: Barthes’ tactile, kinetic “gush of words*” becomes the basis for thinking, talking and taking action within language. Synaesthetic “patina of consonants, lustful vowels”, “(...) materiality, sensuality of breathing, rasping, softness of lips” becomes the foundation of readers’ and writers’ delight arising out of texts.

    The article describes Karolina Grzywnowicz’s Chwasty (Weeds) project. In order to provoke the recipients to reflect on the life of the resettled people, the artist cut out a piece of the Bieszczady meadow and transferred it to Warsaw, where the installation was accidentally mowed. Attempting to answer the question why Weeds were destroyed, we examine how accurate the artist’s recognition is that the Bieszczady landscape is a carrier of memory of the resettled people, and then we prove that the part of the meadow, which in the Bieszczady co-created the keenly practiced landscape, is alienated and transformed into a commodity, and thus it loses its culture-forming functions. The project and the concept of landscape closely related to it are analysed from two complementary perspectives: field experience and anthropology of art.

W artykule analizuję konkretne przykłady tych użyć, zaczerpnięte przede wszystkim z krytycznoliterackich wypowiedzi o najnowszej polskiej prozie, by ukazać, jak „materialność” wpływa na typ komentarzy krytycznych, w tym zwłaszcza na możliwości i ograniczenia recenzji.
    The paper reviews the meanings attached to the notion of “materiality” by literary criticism since 1990s. These meanings depend on several essential philosophical tendencies: poststructuralism, critical social theories, and posthumanism, which has a significant influence on critical-literary conceptualizations of “materiality”. The paper analyzes specific examples, mostly from critical-literary texts about contemporary Polish prose in order to show how “materiality” affects different types of critical commentary, including especially the possibilities and limitations of review.

    A radical reconstruction of the exposition layout at the Museum of the City of Warsaw, connected with the general reconstruction of the facilities and retirement of its longtime director, Janusz Durko (1951-2003), resulted in 2017 in opening a new permanent exposition called Things from Warsaw. The exposition consists of 21 cabinets containing 8 000 items selected out of 300 000 included in the museum holdings (e. g., Cabinet of Warsaw Monuments, Cabinet of Warsaw Silver and Plate Tableware, Cabinet of the Warsaw Sirens, Cabinet of Postcards, Cabinet of Souvenirs, Cabinet of Shrines). The main criterion was the materiality and authenticity of particular items, which resulted in the absence of multimedia presentations and suggested “appropriate” narratives. The main curator of the exposition is Jarosław Trybuś, art historian and curator rewarded with the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2008. His team followed an idea of Bjørnar Olsen that due to various conceptualizations the material world studied by the humanities has been so dematerialized that we can hardly believe our eyes. Thus the features of the exposition – sincerity, seriousness, and modesty – suggest a new approach to the city’s history through experiencing the reality of things treated not so much as “witnesses,” but rather as “actors” of the past events. This turn to materiality stems from the hope to come close to the things without the mediation of words imposing predictable interpretations in advance. In other words, the exposition is a kind of lesson in openness, multidirectional reading, and the de-ideologization of history. The Things from Warsawexhibition has been analyzed in reference to three criteria: openness to the “other,” creating a vision of the future, and the inspiring power of imagination.

    Według Pavlenki (2010) badania krajobrazu językowego (KJ ) nie mogą być w pełni zrozumiałe bez znajomości przeszłości. Rozwinięciem tej idei jest traktowanie badań KJ jako procesu diachronicznego. W artykule analizujemy KJ George Town (obiekt z Listy Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO ) w stanie Penang w Malezji, gdzie istnieje wiele świadectw dokumentujących zmiany zachodzące w czasie. Za wyjątkową cechę George Town należy uznać mieszankę języków pojawiającą się na szyldach sklepów, wśród nich znajdują się egzemplarze pochodzące jeszcze z końca XVIII wieku. W celu zrozumienia zmian społecznych i historycznych, jakie zachodziły w George Town, zebrano dane z wielu źródeł, były to m.in. opowieści właścicieli sklepów, informacje z obiektów historycznych (np. kartek pocztowych i książek) i broszury dostępne w centrum historycznym. Do analizy, kategoryzowania i interpretowania szyldów zastosowano podejście geosemiotyczne. Z badań szyldów i ich treści wynika, że stare szyldy z okresu brytyjskiej kolonizacji były wykonane z drewna a napisy były w większości pisane po chińsku i angielsku. Po uzyskaniu niepodległości przez Malezję zaczęto używać metalu i niestandardowej odmiany języka malajskiego. W roku 1975 zmieniono kilka malajskich zwrotów i właściciele sklepów zaczęli używać standardowego malajskiego. Współczesne szyldy są kolorowe, multimodalne i w większości z tworzyw sztucznych. Najnowocześniejsze z nich także świecą w nocy. Diachroniczne badanie KJ skłania autorów do refleksji, w jaki sposób globalizacja i postęp technologiczny wpływają na treść i wygląd szyldów sklepowych w George Town.
    According to Pavlenko (2010), linguistic landscape (LL ) studies cannot be fully understood without considering the past. Consistent with this idea is conceptualising LL research as a diachronic process. In this study, we explore the LL of George Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Penang in Malaysia, which is filled with evidence of historical changes from the past until its current state. A unique characteristic of George Town is its blend of different languages, which are displayed on shop signs and can be traced back to the late 18th century. To understand the social and historical changes that have taken place in George Town, data was gathered from several resources, including personal narratives by shop owners and historical artefacts such as postcards, books, and brochures obtained from the heritage centre. A geosemiotic approach is adopted to categorise, analyse, and interpret the subsequent collection of shop signs. In terms of the materiality of signs and their linguistic content, the findings reveal that old shop signs from the British colonial period were engraved on wooden boards and mostly written in Chinese or English. After Malaysia gained independence, metal signboards and non-standard Malay were used. In 1975, several Malay terms were changed, and shop owners started using Modern Standard Malay on signs. Currently, shop signs are more multi-modal, colourful, and most likely made of polycarbonate. More recent signs also light up at night. Through a diachronic examination of the LL , we reflect on how phenomena such as globalisation and technological innovation are having an impact on the nature of George Town’s shop signs, and the materiality of these signs.

    In the Augustan Age, a new aesthetic preference was propagated in the Roman Empire – the surface of white marble was valued as it symbolised the strength and superiority of the ‘new age’. Soon, an immense trade in high quality marble over land and sea developed to meet the emergent demand. While the development and scale of this trade is well studied, the repercussions that the new aesthetic preference had on the local architectural traditions in areas where no marble was close at hand is not commonly considered. In this contribution, two developments are traced, taking the Corinthian capital as the leitmotif. First, in the short period between c. 40 and 10 BC, patrons would choose imitation of marble in plaster to meet up with the demands of the new standard and to demonstrate their adherence to the Empire. In the second line of development, a different path was taken – a conscious use of local materials which went hand in hand with the development of a new type of capital, the so-called ‘Nabataean blocked-out’ capital. This combination turned into a new vernacular tradition across large parts of the eastern Mediterranean. Both developments were local responses to a new ‘global’ trend and can therefore be viewed as a phenomenon of glocalisation in the Roman Period.

    The essay investigates the notion of palpable language in Seamus Heaney’s poetry. It is here argued that Heaney’s particular imaginative strength lies in his ability to fuse the words and the world, whether it is the place that is being evoked, the animal or the material reality. The focus is here laid on Heaney’s celebrated poems of place names (Dinnseanchas) but also on his less critically appreciated lyrics that seek to unite the word with animals and, finally, on the few poems that envision what might be termed an incarnated language. As a result, Heaney’s life-long ideal, whereby “what survives translation [is] true,” is shown to develop towards a language that could become, as nearly as possible, a tangible presence in our experience of the world.
    Niniejszy esej bada pojęcie języka namacalnego w poezji Seamusa Heaneya. Postulowane jest tu twierdzenie, że szczególna siła wyobraźni poety leży w umiejętności złączenia słów i świata, czy to jako miejsce ewokowane w wierszu, czy jako zwierzę, czy też wreszcie jako fragment rzeczywistości materialnej. Uwaga zostaje tu poświęcona szeroko komentowanym wierszom poświęconym nazwom miejscowości (tradycyjne irlandzkie Dinnseanchas), lecz również mniej przyswojonym lirykom, które szukają możliwości splecenia słów ze zwierzętami. Wreszcie analizie zostaje poddanych tych kilka wierszy, które można by określić mianem języka wcielonego. W efekcie, ideał, który od zawsze bliski był Heaneyowi – że „to, co przetrwa w przekładzie jest prawdą” – ukazany zostaje jako próba stworzenia języka będącego tak bardzo, jak to tylko możliwe namacalną obecnością w naszym doświadczeniu rzeczywistości.

    The article concerns problems of materiality in Ślady nieobecności. Poszukiwanie Ireny Szelburg [Traces of Absence. In Search for Irena Szelburg] by Anna Marchewka. The author of the article reveals originality of Marchewka's biographical practice interpreting records of material experience, spatial experience and photographic ekphrasis. The main feature of this new mode of biographical writing is the stress on physical, somatic aspect of biographer's experience, which indicates different kind of epistemology - embodied, engaging body as much as mind and emotions.

    Badanie sprawozdania finansowego jest procesem złożonym. Ważną kwestią wpływającą na wynik prac biegłego rewidenta jest zjawisko istotności, zatem przed opracowaniem ostatecznego planu badania ustala on kryteria istotności. Autor artykułu pozytywnie ocenia stan prawny w zakresie poruszanej problematyki, zwraca jednak uwagę na konieczność większego spopularyzowania kwestii ustalania istotności w badaniu jako zagadnienia mającego ogromny wpływ na wydawanie sprawozdania z badania. Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie przeglądu literatury i aktów prawnych, dotyczących istotności w badaniu sprawozdań finansowych, jak również analiza stosowanych narzędzi szacowania istotności w jednostce audytorskiej A. Do zrealizowania celu wykorzystano krytyczną analizę literatury, analizę jakościową aktów prawnych oraz materiałów udostępnionych przez jednostkę A. W celu sformułowania końcowych wniosków posłużono się metodą syntezy.
    Audit of financial statements is a complex process. An important issue affecting the performance of an auditor is the materiality, so the statutory auditor sets the materiality criteria prior to the final audit plan. The aim of the article is to present a review of literature and legislation concerning materiality in the audit of financial statements, as well as an analysis of the materiality assessment tools used in audit unit A. In order to achieve the objective of the article, critical analysis of the literature qualitative analysis of legal acts and materials provided by the entity A were used.

    This text is a translation from English into Polish of a fundamental text for research into reproductions of works of art, written by Constanza Caraffa, the leading theorist of the field. It is an introductory chapter of her important volume Photo Archives and the Photographic Memory of Art History (2011), in which she elucidates the meaning of a photo-archive as a site of research into photographs of works of art as individual, material objects. Using examples and her work experience in the Photothek at the Kunsthistorische Institut in Florence, she presents the complexity and abundance of information that photographic reproductions of works of art can carry, over and above the traditional understanding of a photograph as a document transparent onto the object it represents.

    The present paper presents Blaustein’s critical remarks on the selected assumptions of Husserl’s phenomenological method. The analysis concerns the socalled pretranscendental phenomenology. First, I present the critique of the concept of impressons. Then, I analyze remarks upon aspects pertaining to the concept of materiality and quality of act.
    Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje uwagi krytyczne Blausteina odnośnie do wybranych założeń metody fenomenologicznej Husserla. Analiza dotyczy umownego okresu fenomenologii przedtranscendentalnej. Najpierw przedstawiam krytykę koncepcji wrażeń, następnie odnoszę się do uwag na temat wybranych aspektów związanych z koncepcją przedstawienia, w tym przede wszystkim do materii i jakości aktu.

    Artykuł przedstawia rozważania na temat Leviathana (2012), filmu zrealizowanego przez Luciena Castaing-Taylora i Vérénę Paravel, antropologów współtworzących Sensory Ethnography Lab (Uniwersytet Harvarda). Autor proponuje, by traktować film jako antropologię nowej generacji, zrywającą z tradycyjnym Geertzowskim „opisem gęstym”, nastawieniem antropocentrycznym i reprezentacją dominującą w myśleniu zachodnim. Kładzie nacisk na materialność/materiały, zmysłowość, procesualność, a także nierozróżnialność aktorów ludzkich i pozaludzkich. Ważnymi dla prowadzonego wywodu autorami stają się Gilles Deleuze i Félix Guattari oraz Tim Ingold. Zdanie tego ostatniego (Zaangażowanie w świat wiąże się z odczuwaniem go, a nie zamieszkiwaniem w świecie sensu) mogłoby być szczególnym wprowadzeniem do analizowanego filmu. 
    The article offers a reflection on Leviathan (2012), a film made by Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel, anthropologists associated with the Sensory Ethnography Lab (Harvard University). The author proposes to regard the film as a new type of anthropology, breaking with the traditional Geertzian “thick description” and anthropocentric perspective, but also with the philosophy of representation dominant in the Western world. It emphasizes the importance of materiality/materials, sensuality, processuality, but also the indistinguishability of human and non-human actors. The argument draws on the concepts of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, as well as Tim Ingold. Perhaps the latter’s sentence (To engage with things is to sense the world, not to inhabit a world of sense) could be a kind of introduction to the film.

    The popularity of Jerzy Lewczyński (1924-2014) coincided with the academic interest in the problem of archive, corresponding to Lewczyński’s program of the “archeology of photography,” developed in the 1970s. Lewczyński’s idea consisted in restoring Kantor’s “reality of the lowest rank,” i.e. the rejected microhistories hidden in the anonymous and the forgotten or taken out of an ashtray at the Warsaw Central train station. Today, however, one tends to forget that Lewczyński’s gesture of artistic legitimization did not aim at giving new meanings, but above all at blurring the boundary between everyday items and those which emerged from some kind of “aesthetic situation” (Maria Gołaszewska). This aspect of his art can be seen, e. g, in his visual journal, where the artist included objects of particular importance – next to Xerox copies of his own works or works of other artists, he placed also shopping receipts. Lewczyński equaled the value of cheap receipt paper with the noble velvety quality of bromine. He did not reduce his collected items to their aesthetic function, having rejected the institutionalized idea of the artifact as a work of art to enjoy by the audience. Anticipating the postulates of Bruno Latour, instead of showing objects appropriated by the power of the gaze, he presented actors: things that asked questions on their own.

    Studies related to artifacts, to what has been traditionally categorized as ‘high’ and ‘minor’ or ‘applied arts’, and to the materiality of art in recent years have been among the core foci of art history. More scholarly attention has also been given to the intersections between visual and material culture, not least in transcultural contexts. This paper seeks to contribute to these issues. Investigating transmaterial and transmedial dynamics between the arts, image-object interrelations as well as phenomena wherein images themselves gave the impulse to the creation of artifacts, the paper analyzes transfer processes transgressing various media and materials, 15th- and 16th-century Italian and Portuguese paintings in their Mediterranean and global entanglements, as well as 19th - and 20th-century artistic and academic approaches to objects in paintings.

    W prezentowanym artykule podejmuję problem konstrukcji instytucji totalnej, analizując jej aspekt przestrzenno-materialny. Przedmiotem analizy jest obóz koncentracyjny na Majdanku (KL Lublin), natomiast teoretyczną skrzynkę narzędziową stanowi podejście biograficzne użyte do analizy przestrzeni oraz materialności. Artykuł składa się z trzech głównych komponentów. Rozpoczyna go rekonstrukcja metodologii badań, w której wyjaśniam teoretyczne podłoże pracy i dwa warianty sposobu badania biografii – przestrzeni i rzeczy – oraz określam ramy materiału badawczego i sposób jego interpretacji. Następnie przechodzę do problemu przestrzenno-materialnej historii obozów i konstrukcji Majdanka, rozpoczynając od analizy historii i wzorów organizacji przestrzennej obozów koncentracyjnych, poprzez refleksję nad ich symbolicznym aspektem, po ostatnią część, ujmującą obóz w kategoriach ekologicznych.
    This article focuses on the problem of construction of a total institution by means of analyzing its spatial and material aspects. The subject of the analysis is the concentration camp at Majdanek (KL Lublin), while the biographical approach serves as a theoretical toolbox. The article consists of three main components. It begins with the reconstruction of the research methodology, where I explain the theoretical basis of the work as well as two variants of the way of examining biographies, namely space and items. Here I also define the framework of the research data and the way of interpreting it. Then, I proceed to addressing the problem of the space and the material structure of the concentration camp in Majdanek, which I do by considering the history and spatial organization of concentration camps, their symbolic dimension, and the ecological pattern.

    The article is an introduction to the emotional history of knowledge that in recent years has been developed within French anthropology, sociology, and the history of science. The author reflects on Françoise Waquet’s work entitled Une histoire émotionnelle du savoir. XVIIe-XXIe siècle (The emotional history of knowledge. XVII–XXI century) published in 2019, and analyzes it in a broad context of the interdisciplinary reflection on the history of knowledge and science. The aim of this article is to reflect on Waquet’s most important arguments and to contrast them with other propositions emerging in the field of the history of science.

    For many centuries, scientists, philosophers, artists and others have been fascinated with ruins. However, this fascination usually focused upon ancient and medieval relics. Indeed, it can be metaphorically said that archaeology was built upon ruins. Nonetheless, the archaeological analyses of ruins, their functions, meanings, uses and re-uses over the next centuries had been very selective. In short, modern ruins have been out of closer archaeological attention. It seems as if modern ruins were deprived of social, cultural, and archaeological dimensions. However, this changed during the first decade of the 21st century when archaeologists started to pay attention to the modern ruins. The so-called archaeology of (modern) ruins is one of the most interesting, provocative, and subversive fields of the contemporary archaeological discourses. The starting point of this paper is that there is no “ontological difference” between the Greek, the Roman and the Soviet ruins. All of them can and should be part of archaeological thinking. A two-step approach is applied here. First, the archaeological value of ruins in Chernobyl is discussed. A documentary entitled Czarnobyl – Wstęp Wzbroniony (2015) (Eng. Chernobyl – No Entry) is reviewed to highlight the processes of transformation of the unimaginable nuclear catastrophe into valuable heritage of the recent past. It is argued that Chernobyl can be seen as “Pompeii of our times”. Second, the review of Czarnobyl – Wstęp Wzbroniony is used as a pretext to shortly present different categories of modern ruins that one can encounter in contemporary Poland. Many of them are related with the Soviet occupation in Poland between 1945 and 1993. The point that I try to back up in this paper is that these Soviet ruins are also part of the archaeological heritage of the recent past. Accordingly, this paper is a call for a closer archaeological interest in the ruins of the recent past in general.

Pierwsza część artykułu jest krytycznym przeglądem podejść, w ramach których dotychczas sytuowano socjologiczny namysł nad architekturą. W drugiej części autor przedstawia trzy obszary badawcze, które wyraźnie pokazują zmianę paradygmatu: od obiektu do procesu. W ostatniej części wskazano na konsekwencje, jakie niesie za sobą przyjęcie przez badaczy rozumienia architektury jako dynamicznego obiektu, który staje się pełnoprawnym aktorem życia społecznego.
    The article addresses sociologists’ evolving interest in the study of architecture observed over the last few decades. The first part constitutes a critical review of existing approaches to sociological reflections on architecture. This is followed by a presentation of three areas of research that clearly show a paradigm shift: from object to process. The last section indicates the consequences of researchers adopting an understanding of architecture as a dynamic object that becomes a fully-fledged actor in societal life.

    The main emphasis of the article is on the genological analysis of liberature, characterised as the “total literature,” and proposed by Zenon Fajfer in 1999. The argument consists of three layers. Firstly, the author discusses the terms in which one can speak of liberature as a literary movement. This thesis, however, remains highly problematic, since it entails an unclear relation between liberature understood as a pioneering project (inaugurated by Zenon Fajfer and Katarzyna Bazarnik), and an element within the greater historical perspective, inspired by such “proto-liberary” writers as William Blake, George Herbert or Stephané Mallarmé. Secondly, liberature is theorised as an independent genre, which has emerged due to the increasing value of the formal and material dimensions of literary texts. Finally, bearing in mind the intersection of the semantics and the materiality of the medium taking place in “liberary” works, the author poses the problem of their ontological hybridity. As the article points out, in this case, liberature, with its ephemeral, singular and heterogeneous texts, may be regarded as the system consisting solely of differences.
    Głównym punktem zainteresowania niniejszego artykułu jest genologiczna analiza liberatury, terminu zaproponowanego przez Zenona Fajfera w 1999 roku i zjawiska opisywanego jako "literatura totalna". Wywód składa się z trzech części. Najpierw, autorka rozważa, w jakim stopniu możemy mówić o liberaturze jako ruchu literackim. Teza ta jest jednak wysoce problematyczne, ponieważ zakłada niejasny związek między liberaturą rozumianą jako pionierski projekt (rozpoczęty przez Zenona Fajfera i Katarzynę Bazarnik) oraz element szerszej historycznej panoramy, zainspirowany przez takich "proto-liberatów", jak William Blake, George Herbert czy Stephané Mallarmé. Następnie, liberatura jest rozpatrywana jako niezależny gatunek, wyrosły dzięki rosnącej wartości formalnego i materialnego wymiaru dzieła literackiego. W końcu, autorka podnosi problem ontologicznej hybrydyczności dzieł liberackich, mając na uwadze przecinanie się semantyki i materialności medium charakterystyczne dla tych dzieł. Jak wskazuje, liberatura i jej efemeryczne, osobliwe i heterogeniczne wytwory, w tym wypadku, mogą być rozpatrywane jako system składający się wyłącznie z różnic.

    This paper analyses the so-called biography of a thing as a way of thinking about the value and meaning of heritage. A certain, almost 100 years old, trunk is used as a case study to present how heritage is constituted trough relations between people, things, and places. Indeed, heritage is a kind of relation between humans and non-humans. To back up this thesis, this article offers a five-step approach. First, the starting point is Michael Shanks’ thesis that “we are all archaeologists now”. The British archaeologist – it can be said – argues for broadening the archaeological discourse and to look archaeologically at the world we all live in. From this point of view, a Neolithic pot sherd and a contemporary thing such as a trunk, for example, represent the same category of an archaeological artefact. Through their materiality, they both might be objects of an archaeological scrutiny. Second, I shortly discuss the archaeological research on the recent past. Archaeology is a practice anchored here and now. One of the archaeological perspectives that analyses the relics of the recent past is the approach where archaeologists study their own heritage i.e. the histories of their own families. This is the perspective developed further in this paper. Third, it is argued that the theoretical concept known as biography of a thing, can be useful in the context of the archaeology of the recent past. It is the concept that takes into account the past and present of each artefact, landscape or practice. This approach allows for studying both the social and the material memories which are crucial apropos of the archaeological research on the recent past. Here, archaeologists take into account things as well as people’s memories about them. Fourth, an analysis of a trunk which the author found in the grandmother’s basement is used as a case study to present the potential of the archaeological research on the recent past. Some episodes of the biography of a trunk are highlighted to claim that heritage is constituted through different kinds of relations between many agents, both humans and non-humans. And the last point, the trunk is a good example that shows the limitations of archaeological thinking about heritage through the lens of its preservation and management. Indeed, the crucial conclusion of this article is that, sometimes, the less preservation and management of (archaeological) heritage the better for heritage itself. In other words, destruction and decay of heritage are the very part of its biography.

    W prezentowanym artykule stawiamy pytanie o to, czym są rzeczy w świecie nieustannego konsumowania. Stawiamy tezę, że rozumienie materialności jako obiektów konsumpcji nie pozwala dostrzec złożonych (także edukacyjnych) relacji między ludźmi i rzeczami. W pierwszej części tekstu stawiamy pytanie o to, czym są rzeczy, jeśli patrzy się na nie oczami krytyka konsumpcji, oraz wskazujemy niektóre ograniczenia tej perspektywy. Następnie uwypuklamy potrzebę pedagogiki rzeczy, tj. takiej refleksji nad rzeczami w procesach edukacyjnych, która podkreśla ich rolę we wspomaganiu ludzkiego rozwoju.
    In this article we pose the question about the essence of things in the world of continuous consumption. We formulate a thesis that understanding materiality as the objects of consumption does not allow us to perceive complex (including educational aspect) relationships between human beings and things. In the first part of the article, we ask what things are through the perspective of critics of consumerism and point out some limitations of this perspective. In the last part of the article, we emphasize the need for pedagogy of things i.e. the reflection on things in educational processes that focuses on their role in supporting human development.

    This paper discusses recent advancements in the context of modern conflict archaeology in the woodlands. One aspect of this development of archaeological research is a broad use and application of airborne laser scanning (ALS). Material remains of a forced labour camp and munitions depot in the forests around Gutowiec (Poland) known as Guttowitz 35 are used as a case study. After approaching prisoners’ memories concerning the site, the results of ALS combined with the outcomes of fieldwalking at the site are presented. This article tries to back up the following thesis: due to applications of non-invasive methods (e.g. ALS, fieldwalking), archaeology is able to offer a deeper understanding and contextualization of such sites as Guttowiec 35: a fresh insight into the materiality of conflict landscapes from the recent past in the woodlands.

    This paper is a case study of a prisoner of war and internment camp in Tuchola (Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province, Poland). The camp operated between 1914 and 1923. During the First World War it was run by Germans and later, during the Polish-Soviet War, by the Poles. The site provides a context for discussing two issues around archaeological research of the recent past. The first issue is how archaeology can be used to analyse the transformations of landscapes related to modern armed conflicts. The second point deals with the documentation and analysis of the remains of the camp using ALS derivatives. The main conclusion of this paper is that LiDAR technology can be also a useful tool in the context of approaching landscapes from the recent past.

    Celem artykułu jest analiza, dotychczas niebadanych, monochromatycznych obrazów Rafała Bujnowskiego z lat 2012-2016. Koncentrując się na pracach z serii „Nokturn (Graboszyce)”, „Nokturn”, „Pejzaż w szarości” oraz „Maj 2066. Tonda”, autorka interpretuje je w kontekście doświadczenia obrazu oraz transformacji sposobów widzenia odbiorcy poprzez świadome zabiegi artysty. Artykuł prezentuje najnowszą twórczość Bujnowskiego jako zakorzenioną w historii sztuki – rozpostartą pomiędzy romantyczną poetyką nokturnu a ideą końca obrazu. Korzystanie z konwencji obrazowych nie służy jednak powtórzeniu, lecz ich reinterpretacji: stawianiu pytań o materialność dzieła, granice wizualności czy relację widza wobec płótna. Artykuł wskazuje na różne sposoby intensyfikacji doświadczenia obrazu oraz wzmacniania kontaktu odbiorców z dziełem. Zagadnienia te pozwoliły ukazać monochromatyczne obrazy jako złożony obszar znaczeń jak również środek służący badaniu teraźniejszości: przestrzeni, prędkości, czasu.
    The aim of this study is to analyse the hitherto unresearched monochrome paintings of Rafał Bujnowski from 2012-2016. Focusing on works from the series “Nokturn (Graboszyce)”, “Nokturn”, “Pejzaż w szarości” and “Maj 2066. Tonda”, I interpret them in the context of the perception of paintings, and the painter’s conscious transformation of the viewer’s way of seeing. This article presents Bujnowski’s recent works as rooted in the history of art – covering that space between the romantic nocturne tradition and the idea of the end of painting. The use of painting conventions is not based on repetition, but rather on reinterpretation: asking questions about the materiality of the work of art, its visual limits or the viewer’s relationship with the canvas. I point out different ways of intensifying the experience of paintings and the strengthening of the audience’s contact with a particular work. These aspects allow me to present the monochrome paintings as a complex space of meanings, and as a tool for investigating the present: space, speed and time.

    This essay offers a pluralized conception of local rhetorics. The local has traditionally been conceived as the backdrop or flat surface where rhetoric/discourse is situated, or at best as a contextual dimension of rhetorical situations. The history of usage of this term – evoking a fix and inert connotation that often indicates a bounded locality or site – has contributed to its neglect as a tool for rhetorical theory, while its actual use in rhetorical praxis has proliferated in conjunction to the turn to field and site-based methodologies and practices. By drawing on fieldwork about the rhetoricity of a post-disaster locality to ground my theoretical reflections, here I offer a conceptualization of local rhetorics via multiple ontologies and ecological theories. Finally, throughout the essay, I suggest a rhetorical-topographic approach as a methodological orientation to integrate existing theoretical and methodological pathways for exploring the multiple rhetoricity of the local.
    Niniejszy esej proponuje przyjęcie pluralistycznej koncepcji „lokalnych retoryk”. Tradycyjne ujęcia lokalności zwykle poprzestają na traktowaniu jej jako płaskiej przestrzeni lub tła sytuacyjnego dla retoryki lub dyskursu, a w najlepszym przypadku jako wymiaru kontekstu wpisanego w model sytuacji retorycznej. Historia użycia terminu „lokalny” – z jego konotacją stałości, nieruchomości, dookreślenia przestrzennego – przyczyniła się do zaniedbania rozważań teoretycznych z jego użyciem w badaniach retorycznych. A tymczasem użycie „lokalności” w praktyce retorycznej rozwinęło się zgodnie ze zwrotem ku metodologiom terenowym. Opierając się na pracach terenowych na temat retoryczności miejsc katastrof w celu zapoczątkowania refleksji teoretycznej, niniejsze studium proponuje konceptualizację retoryk lokalnych, która jest konstytuowana przez wiele ontologii i teorii retorycznych. W eseju omawia się podejście retoryczno-topograficzne jako orientację metodologiczną, która może integrować istniejące teoretyczne i metodologiczne ścieżki dociekań na temat wielowymiarowej retoryczności tego, co lokalne.

Przedstawia, w jaki sposób naśladowanie form zaczerpniętych z kina niemego przełożyło się na „kod bibliologiczny” (G. Bornstein), owocując nowatorskim układem typograficznym, za którego sprawą jednym z kluczowych elementów utworu stała się materialność tekstu (kompozycja typograficzna, dobór kroju, stopnia oraz odmian pisma). Ponadto zwraca uwagę na projekt graficzny, na który złożyły się elementy przygotowane przez innych artystów (Witkacy, S. Taeuber-Arp, H. Stażewski).
    The article analyzes Jan Brzękowski’s cinematic novel Bankructwo profesora Muellera [Professor Mueller’s Bankruptcy] from the perspective of avant-garde experiments with novelistic conventions. It demonstrates how the imitation of silent film forms was translated into the “bibliographic code” (G. Bornstein), giving rise to an innovative typographic layout, thanks to which the materiality of the text (typographic composition, different typefaces, fonts, and letters) became one of the key aspects of the work. Moreover, the article draws attention to graphic design created by other artists (Witkacy, S. Taeuber-Arp, H. Stażewski).

    Tekst jest próbą analizy wybranej twórczości biograficznej polskich pisarek w kontekście kulturowych zwrotów – topograficznego i materialnego. Biografie takich autorek, jak m.in. Ewa Kuryluk, Agata Tuszyńska czy Joanna Olczak-Ronikier, stanowią przykłady narracji odzwierciedlających założenia historii nieantropocentrycznej, wedle której tożsamość człowieka budowana jest w relacji z rzeczami, a rzeczywistość materialna i cała sfera tego, co„nie-ludzkie”, odsłaniają nowe możliwości interpretacji ludzkiej egzystencji. Twórcze ambicje autorek biografii coraz częściej ukierunkowane są na poszukiwanie tego, co określić można jako antropoteocentryczny wymiar historii, w którym to, co „boskie”, nie ma charakteru religijnego czy moralnego, ale jest wyrazem konfrontacji badaczki z tajemnicą duchowych, pozamaterialnych wymiarów egzystencji człowieka. Biografizacja przestrzeni oraz uprzestrzennienie narracji biograficznych stają się w konsekwencji manifestem duchowego potencjału współczesnych dyskursów (auto)biograficznych.
    The text is an attempt to analyse selected biographical works of Polish female writers in the context of cultural turns: the turn to materiality and the topographical turn. The biographies of authors such as Ewa Kuryluk, Agata Tuszyńska and Joanna Olczak-Ronikier constitute examples of narratives reflecting the foundations of non-anthropocentric history which stipulates that the human identity is built in relation with objects, and the material reality and the entire “nonhuman” sphere provide new possibilities for the interpretation of human existence. The creative aspirations of female authors of biographies are increasingly oriented towards the search for the anthropo-teo-centric aspect of history where the “divine” has no religious or moral nature but is an expression of the researcher’s confrontation with the mystery of spiritual, non-material aspects of human existence. In the consequence, biographisation of space and spatialisation of biographical narratives become a manifest of spiritual potential of modern (auto)biographical discourses.

    Artykuł, zainspirowany poglądami Daniela Ferrera na genetyczną wariację jako proces zbudowany z wielu powiązań, a nie serię wolnych operacji podporządkowanych innym operacjom, przedstawia literacką genezę jako grę wariacji. Reguły gry można jedynie wstępnie rozpoznać po zidentyfikowaniu jej składników wynikających z tekstu i dokumentu. W artykule szczególną uwagę poświęcam analizie wariacji in absentia, czyli sytuacji, w której choć zapisana jest tylko jedna wersja tekstu, można zestawić ją z wersją, która będzie bliższa czytelnikowi (bądź bardziej oczekiwana). Wariacja in absentia jest istotna dla analizy zarówno tekstowych, jak i materialnych aspektów procesu pisania (np. zmiany układu na stronie, zmiany długopisu, zastąpienia pomocy pisarskich). W artykule śledzę ten rodzaj wariacji na podstawie szkiców Os Degraus do Parnaso (Stopnie na Parnas), kolekcji esejów wszechstronnego pisarza i analitycznego filozofa M.S. Lourenço (1936–2009). Dokładna interpretacja tekstowych oraz materialnych stałych i zmiennych, w zakresie pisowni i użycia narzędzi pisania, prowadzi do wniosku, że przypadki w tekście (elementy, które według W.W. Grega wpływają jedynie na formalną prezentację) nie są zawsze przypadkowe w genezie literackiej.
    The article, inspired by Daniel Ferrer’s view of genetic variation as a process built of many interconnections, rather than a series of free operations subordinated to other operations, presents literary genesis as a game of variation. The rules of the game can only be tentatively discern by identifying its components from text and document. In the article, I devote special attention to the analysis of variations in absentia, i.e. a situation in which, although only one version of the text is written, it can be compared with a version that is closer to the reader (or more expected). Variation in absentia is essential for analyzing both textual and material aspects of the writing process (e.g. page layout changes, pen changes, replacing writing aids). In this article, I follow this kind of variation from the sketches of Os Degraus do Parnaso (The Steps to Parnas), a collection of essays by the versatile writer and analytical philosopher M.S. Lourenço (1936–2009). Accurate interpretation of textual and material constants and variables, in terms of spelling and the use of writing tools, leads to the conclusion that cases in the text (elements that, according to W.W. Greg, affect only formal presentation) are not always accidental in literary genesis.

    This article elaborates on a conception of poetic form derived from the work of the contemporary Polish poet Andrzej Sosnowski, in order to further our understanding of form as something material and dynamic rather than static and purely “textual”. Sosnowski often comments on the materiality of poetry as a useful metaphor that allows us to grasp its peculiar semi-autonomous condition; hence his eagerness to employ the metaphors of poetry as choreography, bodily gesture or action. By putting Sosnowski’s comments in the context of contemporary debates on form and matter in literature—from historical materialism and its traditionally complicated relationship to formalism to a more traditional philological approach to the so-called “new materialisms”—I attempt to point out a possibility of transcending the usual tensions and divisions organising these debates. Here, I find particularly useful the notion of “affordances,” as used by Caroline Levine, as well as the techno-poetic approach of Nathan Brown, and certain conceptual tools offered by the “new formalist” movement. Finally, I reference the work of Adam Ważyk, Sosnowski’s predecessor and one of his main inspirations, in order to show the poetic form as a way of protecting/preserving certain forms of life. Ważyk’s idea of form as a means of resisting entropy provides a unique insight into the more practical aspects of the politics of poetic form.
    Artykuł przedstawia koncepcję formy poetyckiej zaczerpniętą z twórczości Andrzeja Sosnowskiego, mając na celu rozwinąć rozumienie formy jako czegoś materialnego i dynamicznego, nie zaś statycznego i czysto tekstualnego. Sosnowski często powołuje się na materialność poezji jako użyteczną metaforę pozwalającą uchwycić jej specyficzną semi-autonomiczną kondycję - pochodną tej myśli są chętnie stosowane przez niego porównania poezji do choreografii, gestu, akcji. Ustawiając uwagi Sosnowskiego w świetle współczesnych debat nad formą i materią w literaturze - od materializmu historycznego wraz z jego zwyczajowo skomplikowaną relacją do formalizmu, przez tradycyjne podejścia filologiczne, po tak zwane „nowe materializmy” - autorka artykułu stara się wskazać możliwości przekroczenia napięć i podziałów organizujących to pole. Szczególnie pomocny kontekst znajduje w pojęciu „afordancji” tak, jak rozumie je Caroline Levine, a także w techno-poetologicznym podejściu Nathana Browna czy w poszczególnych narzędziach i koncepcjach oferowanych przez ruch nowoformalistyczny. Przywołuje również twórczość Adama Ważyka - poety, który pozostaje jedną z głównych inspiracji Sosnowskiego - by przedstawić formę poetycką jako metodę chronienia/przechowywania pewnych form życia. Ważyka koncepcja formy jako środka odpierania entropii zapewnia szczególny wgląd w bardziej praktyczne aspekty polityki form.

    Heidegger’s The Origin of the Work of Art reevaluates how artworks are meaningful by offering a phenomenological description of the work of art as an historically situated event. This ontological interpretation of art not only rehabilitates our sense of the materiality and singularity of the artwork but it also enables us to think the conditions of the creation and genuine preservation of artworks. In this paper I develop the concept of ruination and argue that ruination is the essence of the artwork. My interpretation emphasizes Heidegger’s insistence on the finitude of the artwork and reveals that Heidegger’s example of the ruin of the ancient temple is exemplary precisely because the ruination of the artwork is an essential characteristic of its happening rather than something that befalls it from outside.

    Artykuł jest próbą ukazania powiązań między archeologią a współczesnością. Zaprezentowane zostały w nim trzy zagadnienia. W pierwszej części autorzy, wychodząc od krótkiej refleksji na temat niedawnego kryzysu ekonomicznego, starają się wykazać, że archeologia na jej najbardziej podstawowym poziomie jest rodzajem działalności społeczno-kulturowej. Druga z poruszanych kwestii dotyka związków między czasem i materialnością w ramach praktyki archeologicznej. Na koniec autorzy zwracają uwagę na to, jak archeologie funkcjonują na styku historii i pamięci. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie archeologii współczesności jako obiecującej dziedziny badań archeologicznych o społecznym i kulturowym znaczeniu dla obecnych i przyszłych społeczności.
    This paper discusses the links between archaeology and contemporary. Tree issues are presented. In the first part of the paper, due to a short reflection concerning the recent economic crisis, it is argued that archaeology is, at its most elementary level, a kind of social and cultural practice. Second issue touches upon the connections between time and materiality in archaeological practice. Finally, the issue of how archaeologies are at the crossroad between history and memory is pointed out. This paper tries to account for archaeologies of the present as a promising field of conducting archaeological research of social and cultural value for the present and future societies.

    Artykuł omawia korzyści płynące z konceptualizacji korespondencji jako medium interpoetyckiego. Analizuje tekstowe i wizualne sposoby uobecniania adresata i nadawcy w listach oraz ich zakłócenia powodowane przerwaniem pisania listu przez rozmowę telefoniczną. Wskazuje na rolę fikcjonalizacji odbiorcy i nadawcy jako warunku wytworzenia „wirtualnej rzeczywistości” listu. Przedstawia podstawowe figury i toposy uobecniania w korespondencji na podstawie zbiorów korespondencji: Wisławy Szymborskiej i Kornela Filipowicza, Marii Pawlikowskiej-Jasnorzewskiej i Stefana Jasnorzewskiego, Stanisława Barańczaka i Lecha Dymarskiego oraz Zofii i Kazimierza Moczarskich.
    The paper discusses the benefits of conceptualizing correspondence as an interpoetic medium. It presents an analysis of textual and visual ways of constructing the presence of the addressee and the sender in letters, and the disruption of constructing this presence caused by interrupting the writing process by a phone call. The paper indicates the fictionalizing role of the addressee and the sender as the condition for creating the “virtual reality” of a letter. It presents basic figures and topoi for acknowledging the presence in correspondence based on the collections of correspondence between: Wisława Szymborska and Kornel Filipowicz, Maria Pawlikowka-Jasnorzewska and Stefan Jasnorzewski, Stanisław Barańczak and Lech Dymarski, and Zofia and Kazimierz Moczarscy.

    Autorka analizuje jeden z dzienników osobistych z obozów koncentracyjnych autorstwa Abrahama Kajzera, więźnia KL Auschwitz-Birkenau i AL Riese (filia KL Gross-Rosen na Dolnym Śląsku). W artykule została wykorzystana teoria Pawła Rodaka dotycząca szeroko rozumianej materialności dziennika jako praktyki piśmiennej, która należała do wyjątkowo skomplikowanych w czasie II wojny światowej, zwłaszcza w obozach koncentracyjnych (znalezienie materiału i narzędzia pisarskiego, stworzenie przestrzeni oraz wytworzenie rytuałów piśmienniczych; miejsce ukrywania notatek oraz ich losy powojenne). Dziennik nie jest jedynie zapisem tekstualnym, jest ściśle związany z życiem. W obozach był bardzo niebezpieczną praktyką (autor mógł zapłacić życiem za pisanie). Abraham Kajzer pisał w jidysz na workach po cemencie ołówkiem kopiowym w obozowej latrynie, która była również miejscem przechowywania notatek. Po wojnie przekazał materiał Adamowi Ostoi, który go przetłumaczył oraz przygotował do publikacji. Kajzer opisał obozową rzeczywistość i traumatyczne przeżycia, które obok wielu innych są dowodem nazistowskiego ludobójstwa.
    The author analyses one of the intimate diaries from concentration camps written by Abraham Kajzer, who was a prisoner of KL Auschwitz-Birkenau and AL Riese (which was a part of KL GrossRosen on Lower Silesia). In article is uses Paweł Rodak's theory of broad understanding of diary's materiality as a writing practice, which was very complicated and difficult during the World War II, especially at concentrations camps (finding material and tool to write, organizing space and work out a ritual of writing; also place where notes were hiding and their fates in the post-war years). Diary it's not only on textual level but it's closely related to regular life. But in the camp writing daries was extremely dangerous practice (author could pay with his own life for it). Abraham Kajzer was an writing in Yiddish on empty cement bags with indelible pencil in camp latrine, where he was also hiding notes. After war he passed on his material to Adam Ostoja, who translated them and edited to publication. Kajzer described his reality in concentration camps and many traumatic experiences, which are one of many evidences of the Nazi genocide.

Autor przedstawia i interpretuje dwa projekty artystyczne Aleksandry Borys: instalację Air Mapping oraz choreografię Dancing the Dance. Prace te zestawia z teorią realizmu agencyjnego Karen Barad. Stara się wykazać, że materia w twórczości Borys może być postrzegana przez pryzmat jej procesualnego charakteru, a nie jako niezmienna podstawa rzeczywistości.
    This article attempts to broaden the Polish theater discourse into analyzing modern choreography practices, focused on the use of objects in dance performances and exploring new ways of understanding materiality. The considerations are based on the assumption that matter is perceived by the creators of new choreography as an active factor which can be incorporated in the artistic process in various ways. The author presents and interprets two artistic projects by Aleksandra Borys, the installation Air Mapping and the choreography Dancing the Dance, and juxtaposes them with Karen Barad’s theory of agential realism. He aims to demonstrate that in Borys’s work matter can be perceived as a process rather than as an unchanging basis of reality.

    Artykuł jest próbą zdefiniowania zjawiska w światowym kinie współczesnym, które wykorzystując nowe sposoby komunikacji w obrębie sztuk wizualnych i ich haptyczności, stara się rekreować nastroje i wrażliwości konotowane z kulturą minionych czasów. Fortepian Jane Campion, jako świadectwo zaangażowanej lektury przede wszystkim poezji Emily Dickinson, ale też Wichrowych Wzgórz Emily Brontë, staje się tu przykładem fabuły z jednej strony nasyconej perspektywami, motywami i sytuacjami zaczerpniętymi z tych utworów, z drugiej wykorzystuje stylistyczną multisensoryczność kina, by w przedstawionych bohaterach i przedmiotach ich otaczających odtwarzać dynamikę relacji i nastroje znane z przekazów o kulturze połowy XIX wieku. Dzięki temu staje się auraptacją (adaptacją auratyczną; ang. auraptation – auratic adaptation), adaptacją aury wyczytanej spomiędzy literackich świadectw epoki, przeniesieniem w dzisiejsze czasy i właściwe im media niepowstałej w wieku XIX opowieści.
    In this article, I attempt to define a new phenomenon in world contemporary cinema. Thanks to new visual means of expression, with a focus on their haptic nature, film tries to recreate moods and sensitivities associated with the past. As an informed reading of Emily Dickinson’s poetry and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, Jane Campion’s The Piano becomes an example of a plot that is, on the one hand, filled with perspectives, motifs and situations from these works and, on the other hand, thanks to the stylistic multisensory nature of cinema, recreates the nineteenth-century dynamics of relations and moods recorded in historical sources in specific characters and objects. Thus, it becomes an auraptation (auraptation: auratic adaptation), an adaptation of the aura found in the literary testimonies of a given epoch. It translates a story that was not created in the nineteenth century into the present and the contemporary media.

    Celem głównym artykułu jest porównanie podejść do zasady istotności ujawnień na gruncie raportowania CSR, zrównoważonego rozwoju i zintegrowanego, a także wyjaśnienie relacji zasady istotności z pozostałymi zasadami stanowiącymi podstawę dobrych praktyk w obszarze raportowania niefinansowego. Artykuł nawiązuje do metodyk procesu określania istotności wskazanych w wytycznych GRI, standardach AA1000 oraz rekomendacjach IFAC. Poruszany temat przedstawia istniejące rozwiązania oraz nawiązuje do wprowadzonych ostatnio zmian lub poprawek. W publikacji zaprezentowano też wnioski wynikające z dokumentu dotyczącego zmian w definiowaniu istotności w odniesieniu do sprawozdań finansowych, opublikowanego przez IASB w październiku 2018 r., oraz wznowionego standardu AA1000 AP dotyczącego zasad społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu. Przeprowadzone w artykule wnioskowanie utwierdza czytelnika w przekonaniu, że sprawozdawczość niefinansowa ukierunkowana jest na potrzeby szerokiego grona interesariuszy.
    The main objective of the paper is to compare approaches to the materiality principle with regard to reporting on CSR and sustainable development as well as integrated reporting. The article also explains the relation of the materiality principle to other principles that form the basis of good practices in the non-financial reporting area. It highlights the methodologies of the materiality determination process indicated in the GRI guidelines, AA1000 standards and IFAC recommendations. The presented topic refers to existing solutions and adresseses recent changes or amendments. The publication presents conclusions resulting from the document on changes in defining materiality in relation to financial statements published by the IASB in October 2018 and the renewed standard AA1000 AP. The inferences confirm the reader in the belief that non-financial reporting is targeted at the needs of a wide range of stakeholders.

    The paper presents an analysis of Barack Obama’s first presidential victory speech and its Polish translation. The analysis focuses on loss of repetitions in translation, resulting in modified meaning and effect of the original speech in the target text. Several theoretical vehicles are employed in the paper to explain how those shifts lead to loss in translation and, hence, affect Obama’s message: overt translation, functional equivalence and loss of materiality. The main motivation behind this paper was a desire to investigate ways in which the purpose that political discourse serves in the original language and socio-political context is handled in translation and to what ends.
    Artykuł prezentuje analizę przemówienia Baracka Obamy po wygraniu pierwszych wyborów prezydenckich oraz jego polskiego tłumaczenia. Analiza skupia się na wyeliminowaniu powtórzeń w tłumaczeniu, co zmieniło wagę i efekt przemówienia. Zastosowano kilka koncepcji teoretycznych w celu wyjaśnienia, w jaki sposób te zmiany prowadzą do strat w tłumaczeniu, a przez to strat w przekazie przemówienia: przekład jawny (overt translation), ekwiwalencja funkcjonalna oraz utrata znaczenia/wagi (loss of materiality). Głównym źródłem motywacji do napisania tej analizy była chęć prześledzenia sposobów, w jakie cel, któremu służy dyskurs polityczny w języku oryginalnym oraz kontekst socjo-polityczny są potraktowane w tłumaczeniu i czemu to służy.

    Opis:
    In the discussion about the modern school, as an institution and a building, there are many social actors, often with different positions. More and more often, though still rarely, the students’ voice is allowed. Their perspective, as many studies show, can be extremely different from that of adults. The aim of my research was to recognize and understand the primary school students’ perspective in terms of their experience of the broadly understood school space and to describe the material and nonmaterial conditions of spaces in which children feel good and like to learn. I conducted my research in 2021 and 2022, shortly after the pandemic and the remote learning. I conducted the research in an interdisciplinary, qualitative approach among 12 students functioning in four different educational systems and environments: home education, private urban schools, public urban schools and public rural schools. The results of my research indicate that children need variety in the school space to feel comfortable and learn effectively. Respondents’ statements revealed several key factors important in places of learning: sense of security, free learning, completeness of the place, possibility to ask questions, consideration of home conditions and setting specific boundaries for the place of formal learning.
    W dyskusji o współczesnej szkole, zarówno w rozumieniu instytucji, jak i budynku, występuje wielu aktorów społecznych o często zróżnicowanych stanowiskach. Coraz częściej, choć nadal rzadko, dopuszcza się głos uczniów. Ich perspektywa, jak wskazuje wiele badań, bywa skrajnie różna od perspektywy dorosłych. Celem moich badań było poznanie i zrozumienie perspektywy uczniów szkół podstawowych w zakresie ich doświadczenia szeroko rozumianej przestrzeni szkolnej oraz opisanie warunków materialnych i niematerialnych przestrzeni, w których dzieci czują się dobrze i lubią się uczyć. Przedstawione w tym artykule badania własne przeprowadziłam na przełomie lat 2021 i 2022, krótko po doświadczeniu pandemii oraz nauki zdalnej z nią związanej. Badania prowadziłam w ujęciu interdyscyplinarnym, jakościowym wśród 12 uczniów funkcjonujących w czterech różnych systemach i środowiskach edukacyjnych: edukacji domowej, szkołach miejskich prywatnych, szkołach miejskich publicznych i szkołach wiejskich publicznych. Wyniki moich badań wskazują, że dzieci potrzebują różnorodności w przestrzeni szkolnej, aby czuć się komfortowo i skutecznie się uczyć. W moim badaniu wypowiedzi respondentów ujawniły kilka kluczowych czynników ważnych w miejscach nauki, które obejmują: poczucie bezpieczeństwa, swobodę w nauce, kompletność miejsca, możliwość zadawania pytań, uwzględnienie warunków domowych i wyznaczenie określonych granic dla miejsca formalnego uczenia się.

    Sporządzanie zapisków terenowych pozostaje integralną częścią obserwacji uczestniczącej, która polega na tym, że badacz uzyskuje wgląd w konkretne sytuacje społeczne i zjawiska kulturowe. Procedura notowania z pozoru wydaje się prosta, jednak w istocie jest to złożony proces, uwarunkowany przez rozmaite okoliczności oraz mający swe korelaty cielesne i materialne. Dlatego warto zdawać sobie sprawę nie tylko z tego, co badacz zapisuje, ale także, że w ogóle zapisuje oraz – nade wszystko – jak to robi. Kwestie te należy zaś analizować w sposób zindywidualizowany i zlokalizowany, zorientowany na działania konkretnego badacza w konkretnym terenie. W artykule podejmuję refleksję nad praktycznymi aspektami tworzenia notatek terenowych na przykładzie własnych badań nad autyzmem.
    Writing field notes is a vital part of participant observation necessary to gain insight into specific social situations and cultural phenomena. The procedure of data recording seems deceptively straightforward, but is indeed a complex process conditioned by various circumstances, which have their own specific materiality and corporeality. Therefore, it is worth perceiving not only what a researcher writes, but also that he/she writes, and above all – how he/she writes. This in turn should be analysed as individual and localised practice, associated with a particular researcher and a particular field. In the paper I pay attention to the practical aspects of note-taking on an example of my own research on autism.

    Krajobraz konfliktu to koncepcja przykuwająca obecnie uwagę w studiach krajobrazowych. Kierunkuje analizy przede wszystkim w ramach archeologii współczesności, stanowiąc jeden z kluczy odczytywania historii ze struktur otaczającego nas krajobrazu kulturowego. W artykule przedstawiono propozycję rozszerzenia koncepcji krajobrazu konfliktu w dyskursie o żydowskim materialnym dziedzictwie religijnym. Humanistyczne zwrócenie się ku materialności odsłania nowe konteksty Zagłady, w tym jej nie-ludzkie, bo krajobrazowe reprezentacje. Adaptację koncepcji w studiach nad żydowskim dziedzictwem religijnym przedstawiono na przykładzie badań przeprowadzonych w przestrzeni Nowego Cmentarza Żydowskiego w Łodzi. W pracy omówiono wyniki analiz dotyczących wybranych elementów krajobrazu konfliktu stanowiących składowe m.in. substancji nagrobkowej nekropolii. W badaniach wykorzystano metodykę nieinwazyjnej dokumentacji terenowej oraz wykonano analizę komparatystyczną danych fotogrametrycznych i teledetekcyjnych (m.in. chmury punktów z lotniczego skaningu laserowego, zdjęć lotniczych). Na tej podstawie skonstruowano przestrzenne modele zinwentaryzowanych struktur dziedzictwa materialnego, stanowiących historyczne palimpsesty, i wyodrębniono elementy krajobrazu konfliktu.
    The landscape of conflict is a conception which has recently attracted a lot of attention in landscape studies. It chiefly inspires studies that represent the field of the archeology of the present, thus constituting one of the keys to reading? history from the structures of the surrounding cultural landscape. This article proposes to extend the conception of the landscape of conflict into the discourse about Jewish material religious heritage. Attention paid by the humanist to materiality reveals new contexts of the Holocaust, including its non-human, landscape representations. Here, an adaptation of the conception in the studies of Jewish religious heritage has been carried out on the example of research conducted in the vicinity of the New Jewish Cemetery in Łódź. This article presents the results of studies of chosen elements of this landscape of conflict, elements which, along with other functions, constitute the physical fact of the gravestones of the necropolis. The research drawn upon was gathered using the methods of non-invasive field documentation; the analysis involves the comparisons of photogrammetric and teledetection data, including point clouds obtained by laser scanning and aerial photographs. These were the basis for the spatial models of the structures of material heritage under consideration, which constitute historical palimpsests, and for the identification of the elements of this landscape of conflict.

    Opis:
    Solitude is, to some measure, in the centre of Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophy. Indeed, in each of the three periods of his philosophical path, solitude adopts a different shape. In the first period, Levinas shows us hypostasis as the solitude of the monad, tragically enclosed within itself. In the second period he sketches before our eyes the image of solitude as a transcendental condition of the occurrence of encounter with the Other. Whereas in the third period, he asserts the solitude of the subject who is infinitely responsible for Others. Admittedly, the term “solitude” (la solitude) appears only in the first period of his philosophical quest. In the second period, he designates solitude by the terms “separation” (la séparation), while in the third period he calls it “selfness” (le Soi). Although Levinas uses those three distinct terms, which might suggest completely different realities, they converge precisely in what constitutes the substantial richness of the experience of solitude.

    Opis:
    In the first part of the paper devoted to the multidimensional analysis and interpretation of the novel by Reif Larsen, I show that the liberary optics will allow its optimal reading. The analysis of the form of this work, its “flesh”, was carried out in relation to the proposals of Zenon Fajfer and Katarzyna Bazarnik — the founders of the liberature theory, which centres its interest on the materiality of the book as a physical object, focusing on the integrity of the form of the recording with the content conveyed. Selected anatomical details of a liberary text are its “external” characteristics, manifested mainly in the shape and the structure of the book, as well as in the related field of intermedia. I have established that the media conveying the meaning of The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet are: the text and the material form of the book, forming an organic whole; all its elements, including the non-verbal ones, are the media of its meaning. The important elements include, among others, its format imitating the shape and dimensions of a popular American spiral notebook; increased spacing mimicking printing rulings; multi-topic marginalia; a small font size — reflecting the handwriting of a young cartographer; numerical values (e.g.: the dimensions of the volume, the number of chapters, the numbering contained in infographics, the numbering of exhibits displayed on the cover and the website); transtextual operations (e.g.: intertextual quotation-motto, hypertextual graphic references to Moby Dick by Herman Melville or the metatextual reference to the philosophy of Plato).
