Opis:
Interaction Analysis has been explored for the initiating topics, turn taking, and asking and answering questions in face-to-face learning environments during the last decades. This study investigated the form and sequence of the questions and answers in an asynchronous environment from a non-interventionist point of view. To conduct the research, 16 questions and answers from the discussion boards of an eight-week international online research course from 30 participants were copied, classified, and analyzed according to the Hmelo-Silver and Barrows’ (2008) grid. All the questions were classified as long-answer, short-answer, and task-oriented questions and their frequencies were calculated. Also, the presence of the Initiation, Response, and Feedback/Inquiry (IRFI) pattern was examined The results indicated that the largest number of questions fell under long-answer types and the participants were more motivated in responding the long-answer queries relating directly to the immediate studied materials or asking about definitions and personal ideas. The findings supported the idea that IRFI pattern might not be applicable in asynchronous environments. Therefore, the instructional patterns need to be designed carefully according to the needs of the new contexts. This study could enhance meaningful interactions in online educational settings such as language learning, teacher training, and professional development.

Aim. The purpose of the research is to depict how talented students create their personal learning environment. The author of that paper shows a difference that has occurred thanks to the comparison between the manner in which average students and talented students build their personal learning environment. Methods. The author has conducted quantitative research, by making a survey. The surveys were carried out among fifty talented students. This paper focuses on the presentation of their opinions. The respondents presented how they constructed their personal learning environment. Additionally, they expressed their viewpoints about their digital competences. Results. The analysis shows that talented students are familiar with the latest digital tools. It allows them to design their personal learning space effectively. They can collect and process information profitably. They are also keen to share their knowledge with other participants of an educational process via the Internet, using some complex and practical devices. Moreover, talented students prefer discussing educational problems with other students online. They use some appropriate tools, such as chat rooms and social networking services. According to the research, the author can conclude that talented students are able to build and improve their digital learning space very well. They seem to create their personal learning environment functionally and consciously. Conclusions. Talented learners use advanced searching strategies, methods of collecting and storing information, and also teamwork tools. It is particular that they are autonomous learners but they also like sharing knowledge with other learners. The level of information competences of the talented students is quite high.

The article discusses the methods of defining and describing the processes of learning in what is generally acknowledged as the learning environment. In the contemporary pedagogical discourse the category of the “learning environment” (formerly associated with the surroundings of school and the classroom) is always expanding and acquiring new meanings, in the wake of ecological changes and the virtualisation of contemporary culture. The “learning environment” becomes a part of the ongoing descholarisation, which manifests itself, for example, in the “open space” movement, outdoor education or “Gesamtschule”, the trends related to the transfer of education outside of school. In the last part of the text, a postulate is formed to include a “learning for the environment” category to the pedagogical theory and practice. This stems from the need to deepen the social sensitivity of the threat of degradation of the entire ecosystem in which we live today.

Although the genesis of connectivism as a theory of learning in the digital age dates back to the early 2000s, in Polish pedagogy this concept remains relatively unknown, sparse in academic debates, and downright rare in empirical research. The main purpose of the article is to present the knowledge and opinions of Polish teachers regarding connectivism. To what extent do Polish teachers know the theory of connective learning? Which of its assumptions do they see as key? To what extent are they willing to apply these assumptions in practice as a path or tool for developing their own professional competences? These research questions were the basis for a survey, the presentation of which constitutes the backbone of this article. The research indicates a clear cognitive dissonance in the minds of the teachers surveyed: the gap between the perception of the potential values of connectivism and the ability/readiness to use its tools in their own learning. The summary of the text contains conclusions for in-service teacher training, which needs to be reorganized to include the most valuable connected learning instruments so as to provide teachers with the skills necessary for successful self-regulated learning in the digital age.

Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is a fad in the 21st century academic landscape. A number of studies found out that students perceive VLEs positively and that VLEs facilitate learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and provide an avenue for educators to extend a helping hand to their EFL students. Sustaining VLEs is not an easy task as it raises various concerns and challenges, particularly in the domain of EFL learning. This paper reports on the results of a qualitative study aimed to shed light on the stakeholders’ perception towards VLE as well as the significant concerns and challenges encountered by EFL lecturers and their students on their actual use of VLEs in a higher education institution. Furthermore, the study unveiled the practical tips to create efficient and effective VLEs, based on the suggestions of both the EFL students and their lecturers.

The child cannot be a background for teachers’ actions but an authentic real creator of his/her development. School should evolve from a socially and culturally authorised knowledge-transferring institution into an agency which will be a community of life and work. This paper focuses on selected aspects of a new culture of learning: constructive, self-regulated, situated and collaborative, that prepares the student for smooth functioning in a world marked by change.

The digitality on the portal is seen as a visual-sound enhancement of classes and the technical facilitation of the teacher’s work. In spite of the current innovative trends, the general model promoted on the website is seen as functional-behavioral.

The purpose of this study is to investigate EFL university students' learning strategies used in a digital English learning environment, and to analyze the interrelations between their use of learning strategies and individual learner factors, such as gender, English proficiency levels, learning experiences, and the duration of using the digital learning environment. The participants of the study were 400 students selected from two universities located in South Korea. A questionnaire was developed to examine the use of digital English learning strategies (DELS) based on Oxford's (1990) SILL and was distributed in an online survey form. Data collected in the present study was statistically analyzed to show that, first, the most frequently used strategy category was compensation strategies, and this was followed by memory and metacognitive strategies. Second, learner factors included in this study showed statistically significant relationships with the use of DELS, but the duration of using digital devices was not related to DELS usage. From these findings, the study concludes that understanding the learning process and strategy use patterns is very critical to make students strategic learners in a digital English learning context and eventually to develop students’ digital English abilities. The suggestions and implications for further study are also discussed.

This article is an introduction to the discussion on the essence of teaching methodology and the changes in its forms in contemporary culture. Two approaches to methodology are proposed: as a socially collective praxis, often unconsciously drawing on cultural practices, and as a so-called expert methodology – a collection of patterns of proper execution, which are a manifestation of the power/knowledge relation in the fi eld of education. Psychology and cognitive science reports confirm that expert methodology is now losing its theoretical justification. The adoption of the concept of cultural (archetypal) methodology gives a chance of a deeper change in the practice of education, whose avant-garde are the concepts of the “reversed class” and of learning as a “dispersed” study, which consists of: equipment, material environment, and network interactions.

The conception is designed by means of literature analysis, complemented with the findings of empirical/diagnostic/correlative research of quantitative/ qualitative character, meant to pinpoint the levels of 1160 teachers’ information literacy within the area of the use of ICT tools and methods. The boundary values of the model were determined (i.e., the concept-constructs of “cloud” and “silo”) together with their referents to six layers, including: technology, society, economy, knowledge, culture and philosophy (epistemology, axiology). Also, an attempt was made to calibrate teachers’ performance in their educational environment at the time of technological and cultural change.

Research background: There is currently a need for empirical research regarding the validity of specific work environment model elements supported by strong statistical evidence. The amount of research conducted in this field has been particularly limited in Central-Eastern Europe. The desire to fill in these gaps was at least in part responsible for the uniqueness of the research approach and its differences from previous similar studies. Purpose of the article: The purpose of this study was to examine factors affecting employee engagement and to examine their relationship with each other using Visegrad countries as an example. Methods: The initial data is taken from the fourth European Company Survey (2019) for management respondents. After data cleaning, the sample sizes for Czechia, Hungary Poland, and Slovakia are N(CZ)=904, N(HU)=682, N(PL)=511, and N(SK)=361, respectively. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), the following five dimensions were identified for this research: (1) inclusiveness, (2) empowerment, (3) work autonomy, (4) organizational learning environment, and (5) work engagement. An analysis of structural equation modeling (SEM) was conducted to determine the links that exist among these dimensions of a constructive work environment. Findings & value added: The structural model indicates that inclusiveness and empowerment have a significant positive impact on work engagement in all the countries examined. Inclusiveness was the strongest predictor of work engagement, followed by empowerment. Both of the two other predictors in the model (workplace autonomy and organizational learning environment) generally had less or no effect on employee engagement. The present study extends recent literature on work engagement by empirically validating the influence of workplace environment-related factors, as well as providing useful organizational policy recommendations for managers.

The twenty first-century learning environment, the classroom in particular, is believed to create conditions for a language learner to engage in autonomous and cooperative learning activities. It is also believed to develop and sustain motivation, to foster self-regulation and – last but not least – to facilitate the learning process. The learning environment is composed of the learner, other students, the teacher and the physical environment, i.e. the furniture and equipment. The research presents students’ opinions concerning the positive and negative influences of selected aspects of the classroom environment on their language learning process, motivation, ability to self-assess, self-confidence and attitudes to the target language and culture. As seen from data analysis, it is the teachers whose knowledge, behaviours and attitudes appear to have the biggest influence on students’ learning process. The opinions are collected from students’ written guided interviews and may become an inspiration for teacher educators at the university level.

Opis:
The article describes a new form of e-learning – adaptive e-learning. The theory of this form is based on a series of pedagogical-psychological rules which are aimed at the technical possibilities of today’s IT. The very basics of adaptive e-learning is comprised of the student’s learning style and a group of algorithms which will assign a suitable study material to the student according to his/her learning style. This whole process is automatized and secured by a virtual teacher – control manager. Its functions will be described in detail in this article.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is twofold: to present an authentic collaborative project devoted to the transcreation of different versions of Polish legends and folk tales (with eventual publication in an academic journal), as well as to demonstrate the advantages of applying the transcreative approach to translation in translator training at MA level. The project in question was accomplished in the academic year 2018/2019 by a team of the 1st and 2nd year MA students, partly out of the classroom in an authentic setting and partly within the frames of a specialised collaborative translation course. The paper presents a new idea to teach translation, based on action research and the out-of-the-classroom approach to translator training, and includes a qualitative research case study of students’ views on the project as well as some pedagogical implications, such as the proposal to introduce collaborative transcreation activities into translator training curricula.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to examine how university classroom environment changes with the arrival of foreign students, especially those who are participants of international exchange programmes. The learning environment is an important component of higher education, as adult students are often conscious learners, who want to learn and see the purpose in doing so; also, they are often self-conscious, especially in a foreign language class. A multi-cultural classroom can be a beneficial element of university education, for both the students and the teacher, as it provides an opportunity for students to share experiences and bring their insights to the learning process. Conversely, one of the challenges a university teacher faces is to find a way to actively involve all the students in the class, taking into account their various backgrounds, different language skills and learning experiences, styles and preferences. The article is designed specifically to examine the effects of student mobility on the learning environment and the challenges, costs and benefits of education in a multicultural class. It also presents recommendations to make the adult learning environment an effective one, especially when it comes to education in a multicultural environment and learning in a foreign language.

Academic achievement varies according to the perception of learning environments (LE). The current study aimed to investigate how the perception of LE differs according to level of academic achievement. 1,106 Thai undergraduate students replied to a survey. Analyzing the data with One-way analysis of variance differences were found in perception of the LE in terms of task orientation and instructor feedback. Average-achieving students perceived task orientation higher than high and low-achieving students. High-achieving students perceived instructor feedback the most. This study provides insights into each type of LE applied in the classroom and suggests how individual academic achievers can be suitably enhanced.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the paper is to assess the level of interest in the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) during and before the pandemic, as well as to identify and compare solutions implemented at selected Polish universities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research methodology: The preliminary study was based on bibliometric analysis. The frequency of the VLE notion in the scientific literature was verified. Then a case study was applied. Six universities in Poland were analyzed, which had to make radical organizational changes in a short time, allowing them to conduct classes with students almost exclusively remotely. Findings: The conducted analysis led to the identification of significant similarities in the procedures undertaken and organizational changes of the universities described. Some variation has been observed in terms of the software used that builds the university’s VLE. Research limitations: Only cases of universities in Poland have been described. The choice of the university was intentional. Value: The value of the paper is to draw attention to: on the one hand, the versatility of the VLE, and on the other, certain common features that university VLEs should have in order to ensure the work of the university (and other institutions dealing with education) in a crisis situation.
Wyniki: przeprowadzona analiza doprowadziła do wskazania dużych zbieżności w podjętych procedurach i zmianach organizacyjnych opisanych uczelni.
