Opis:
The concept of capital is one of the most noticeable and at the same time the most unclear concepts organizing not only the field of social sciences, but also the public debate in Poland and in the world. The article analyses two ways of conceptualization of the capital rooted in political and neoclassical economy together with their sociological modifications. The aim of this short reconstruction is to present a complex relation between the economic capital and the social capital treated as moral capital. This ambiguity induces us to ask a question about the significance of shifting this concept from the field of economic analyses to the centre of sociological theories in the context of crisis and transformations of late capitalism.

In the era of mass currency pertaining to the Bourdesian concepts of cultural and social capital, the latter given in somewhat different renderings by a plethora of other authors, such as Putnam, Coleman and so on it is easy to forget what the true 'founding father', or 'mother', if you like of the entire 'capital' family was. Furthermore, the notion concerned, owing to its association to the economic, and in particular managerial practice and corporate governance, could be said to possess even greater importance than the two varieties of the supreme category mentioned above, all their -real or ostensible charm, apparently so attractive to the practitioners of the humanities and social sciences notwithstanding. However, the patience of the reader is kindly requested; the concept concerned will be tackled head-on in Part II of the present book while in the brief Part I the underlying theoretical and conceptual framework that shall be deployed in that analysis needs to be illuminated. And you know what? As opposed to some other authors who in similar circumstances tell the reader that she can, if she wants, skip this (purportedly hard to swallow and boring) theoretical considerations and skip to the core of the matter, which in this book is placed in Part II; as distinct thus to the majority of writers, the reader is not advised by the present author to skip the theoretical section, since absent these considerations, she is bound to have some difficulties in understanding or understanding in full the material in the remaining parts of the current work. Finally, being frank by default, so to speak, the undersigned must confess that there are certain more personal motivations behind the aformentioned recommendation, too; after all, parents worldwide commonly boast about their offspring and precisely such a relationship obtains between the current intellectual producer and the principal theoretical core of what is being put forward below.

In modern economic theories, human qualities are treated as autonomous production factors, which are called “human capital”. However, in these theories, there is no description of the relationship between human capital and the man who is his “bearer,” nor an explanation of the process of that capital formation. In the thesis, the author tries to justify it as follows: Human qualities, including knowledge and skills, are an integral part of a human being, that is, they are involved in every human act. It is therefore wrong to analyze their economic significance in isolation from the whole structure of human activity. Through his action, man discovers the potential in things and relationships in the form of the possibility of using them for a particular purpose. Capital is thus realized by the human potential of things that form a system for transforming the world. In the first part, a general description of the theory of human capital will be made. In the second part, it will be criticized. In turn an attempt will be made in the third part to show the proper relationship between man and capital from the perspective of personalism.

Purpose: The aim of the article is to examine the selected determinants of the expected rate of return on human capital. Methodology: We conducted an anonymous survey of expected salaries among the Accounting and Controlling students at the Cracow University of Economics, which provided a unique setting for the analysis. On the basis of collected data for the cost of living and the cost of professional education for every participant, we used the human capital model developed by Dobija to compute the perceived level of the human capital of each individual. Then, we compared the expected salaries with the perceived levels of human capital and computed expected rates of return on human capital. The following research methods are used: literature review, statistical tests, econometric modeling. Findings: On the sample of 754 respondents, we found that male students expect a higher rate of return on their human capital than female students, while older students expect a lower rate of return on human capital than younger students. Research limitations: Only one field of study was used to measure the determinants of the expected rate of return on human capital. Originality: We contribute to the salary expectations and human capital literature by identifying a significant gender salary expectations gap that holds even after considering individually assessed costs of living and professional education. Our findings are consistent with the well-known observation that women tend to expect lower salaries than men.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the employment-related real income gaps according to the education level reached by the working population during the 19972017 period. Using a panel methodology (pseudo-cohorts) it sums up that throughout recession, employment-related real income gaps by education level are wider, amplifying income inequality. During the economic boom the narrowing of the gap was due to the weak growth in skilled employment that did not manage to recover the pre-crisis values. This phenomenon is typical of a labour market structure with less skilled employment demand than its increasing supply. eTh employment-related diefrence in reduction of the real income gaps is exclusively reflected by a decline in employees from the highest education segment. The whole of tertiary education although with less intensity, replicates its trend. Not only educational credentials increase future employment-related income but also starting then not completing a university degree provides a significant disparity. Gender control shows a sharp drop in its determination.

Opis:
People should be at the centre of attention within knowledge-based economics. The leaders of each enterprise ought to focus on providing the best conditions for their employees’ professional and individual development and treat them with respect in terms of their dignity and needs. In contemporary literature two notions in perceiving people in organisations are noticeable. The first one treats employees as ‘resources’ which have to be properly used or as ‘capital’ that should bring a decent return on investment. The second notion derives a lot from Christian philosophy and sees the human as a person who treats work as a way to realize his calling and thus is able to take responsibility for the decisions made and actions taken. Acting in a constantly changing environment, people have to be flexible and able to take advantage of emerging opportunities and avoid threats. Within this process it is not a matter of being a human ‘being’ but rather becoming, which means that they are incessantly developing their potential. Although it is hard to predict human behaviour, the main task for managers is to lead in a way that will help employees use their full potential for both their own and the company’s benefit.

Aby ocenić sytuację Polski, dokonano przekrojowej analizy w latach 2013 i 2019. Uzyskane wyniki badań zostały omówione, a następnie przedstawiono wnioski.
Human capital is one of the most important factors influencing the economies of countries. This study analyzes human capital in European countries. 27 countries were examined in terms of factors reflecting the level of human capital, which were selected on the basis of substantive and formal criteria. There was a broader view of human capital both in terms of quantity and quality. Thus, the Ward’s method from the group of agglomeration methods was used in order to group countries in terms of the similarity of the researched resource. The human capital of Poland was also examined in comparison to other European countries and the changes that have occurred in recent years. In order to assess the situation of Poland, a cross-sectional analysis was made in 2013 and 2019. The obtained research results were discussed and the resulting conclusions were presented.

Opis:
The article deals with the study of the role of human and social capital in shaping the processes of regional development in Poland in 2002–2014. The study is aimed at seeking answers to the question whether and to what extent the characteristics of human and social capital development impeded or fostered the achievement of convergence in living standards (GDP per capita) in regional systems (NUTS-2). The following tools were used: multidimensional statistical exploratory analysis – the cluster analysis (Ward’s, k-means), linear ordering – as well as correlation analysis and measures of statistical dispersion. The analysis confirm a stronger link of the processes of economic development in Polish regions with human capital than in those with social capital, whereby there is evidence indicating that it was rather a higher level of the economic development that stimulated changes in human capital and the reverse impact of human capital on the change in the GDP per capita was weaker. When it comes to the educational component of human capital, it can be assumed that this component of human capital could have had a more polarizing than converging impact. The social capital did not mitigate nor strengthen the polarizing impact of human capital. There was, therefore, no confirmation to the hypothesis that intangible factors – human and social capitals – contributed to the convergence in living standards among regions in Poland in 2002–2014.

Spośród negatywnych wskaźników kapitału ludzkiego należy odnotować dużą spadkową dynamikę liczby ludności zarówno w kraju, jak i we wszystkich okręgach Litwy.
The analysis of indicators of human capital in Lithuania shows that the biggest changes recorded in the discussed period were undergone by the following indicators: the percentage of people with higher education, the number of full-time students per 1,000 residents (employees), the number of employees in R&D per 1000 inhabitants (employees), the number of infant deaths per 1000 live births and the distance of Lithuania’s employment structure from the structure of the EU 15. Among the negative indicators of human capital downward trends in the population sizes both in the country and in all counties of Lithuania should be recorded. In the analysis of spatial differentiation between counties of Lithuania it was stated that the best indicators of human capital were shown by Vilnius and Kaunas Counties. In the analyzed period, these districts showed the highest positive dynamics of indicators of human capital. Such human capital indicators as number of employees in R&D sector, full-time students and academics presented the biggest spatial heterogeneity. The smallest regional variations were observed among the tested indicators for the number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births and the proportion of economically active people with secondary vocational education as well as a similar indicator for the percentage of employed people with secondary vocational education. Several counties of Lithuania had very poor results of the analyzed measures of human capital. This primarily refers to Tauragė and Marijampolė Conties. They also had the weakest results concerning dynamics of changes of indicators of human capital.

Opis:
The paper offers an empirical analysis of the effectiveness of spending on junior high schools in Poland on the basis of students’ performance during external exams in 2002-2006 and Central Statistical Office (GUS) data on local government budgets. The study makes use of multilevel models, including an “educational value-added model.” Even though the methods used by the author do not make it possible to determine the exact cause-and-effect relationships involved, they are more reliable than methods used in most previous studies of this kind in Poland. The results obtained by Jakubowski suggest that, under the existing institutional arrangements, the total expenditure of Poland’s central and local governments per student has no influence on the average increase in knowledge among junior high school students. Greater spending neither upgrades the quality of education nor helps equalize educational opportunities, Jakubowski concludes. These findings carry a clear message for decision makers and local government officials responsible for educational policy showing that their policies do not necessarily contribute to an increase in the country’s human capital stock. Further investment in the national education system requires a rethinking of the effectiveness of individual measures, Jakubowski says. At the same time, he adds that further research is needed to look for more effective educational programs to improve the quality of education in Poland.

Opis:
The paper aims to quantify changes in the quality of Poland’s working population in 1993-2006. An important drawback of standard measures of labor input, such as the number of people employed or total hours worked, is that they treat the labor force as a homogenous entity. The starting point for calculating effective labor input in this paper is to loosen this assumption by disaggregating employment into groups within which the homogeneity assumption would be more valid. The subsequent aggregation explicitly takes into account the diversity of the marginal product of labor between the groups, using the average wage as a proxy. The empirical analysis is based on microeconomic data from a labor force survey. Education, age and sex were considered as important criteria in accounting for the heterogeneity of labor productivity. The analysis shows that labor input quality in Poland grew in 1993-2006 at an annual average rate of 0.9 percent, adding 0.6 percentage points to the average annual GDP growth rate. The main factor behind the improved quality of labor was an improvement in the educational structure of the working population.

Inter-sectoral cooperation is one the most important elements of contemporary, place-based policy. Deriving from the conditions of the environment, also the global one, local actors should join their forces by investing in the resources determining today’s’ development – knowledge and human capital – in the most effective way. However, internal national or regional conditions, very often do not allow for efficient adaptation of development mechanisms, even when they have been already tested in other places. By narrowing the area of analysis to the relationships between territorial self-government and non-governmental organisations, this paper is an attempt to answer the question on what scale, in the Polish conditions, public-social partnerships are being built and what is their scope. Analysis concerns the institutions involved in the investment in knowledge and human capital, operating in the region of Lodz.

Opis:
In the context of the transition of the national economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan to an innovative type of development, the issues of the formation and development of human capital are becoming increasingly important. Increasing labor productivity, developing high-tech production, creating innovative products in the republic is impossible without providing the branches of the national economy with personnel who have the necessary professional and personal competencies. In turn, social and economic factors affect the formation and quality of human capital, while there is an uneven spatial distribution of human resources. Accordingly, the priorities of the socio-economic development of the territories require coordination with the tasks of increasing human capital. The basis of this study is the analysis of the reproduction processes of human capital in the regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan, taking into account the socio-economic component. The object of the research is the human capital of the regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the subject of the research is the socio-economic aspect of the development of human capital. The method of the integral index for assessing human capital was taken as the main model for calculating human capital. We identified not only socio-economic factors affecting the effective use of human capital in the regions, but also demographic, environmental components and calculated indices based on these factors. The analysis showed that one of the key factors affecting the differentiation of the level of accumulated human capital is socio-economic. According to the results, the regions were identified as leaders and outsiders in terms of the level of accumulated human capital, regions with a post-industrial warehouse of the economy have high indicators of the human capital index, regions with agricultural specialization are low.

T.W. Schultz, G.S. Becker and J. Mincer are regarded as the creators of the concepts and theories of human capital. At the beginning of the 60s of the twentieth century they got interested in this subject. However, the studies of the role of the man as well as their skills in the economy had been carried out before. Over the years, human capital was considered as an element of intellectual capital. Both of these capitals and their development are included in the activity of enterprises. This article presents the genesis and essence of the recognition of human capital as a part of the intellectual capital comprising the reflections of some economists on human capital and the interpretation of intellectual capital issue, as well as its components. Due to limited length of the article only a selective presentation of views of researchers dealing with depicted issues was possible.

Opis:
The main focus of this study is on understanding the importance of social dynamics of cities for attracting human capital to urban regions. The principal research question of the article is “if there is a spatial dependency on neighbouring provinces’ social environmental qualities in human capital attraction for Turkey.” It is believed that developmental disparities among regions can be overcome with a balanced distribution of human capital. In this article, first the concept and importance of human capital and its evolution throughout economic history are explained in order to emphasize the relationship between development and human capital for urban regions. The literature review consists of migration models developed and used in previous studies and recent literature that together consider human capital and its flow with spatial analysis. A review of migration models helps structure the quantitative models’ building blocks, or the concepts to be quantified. Literature that discusses human capital and spatial analysis, at the same time, guides the study in implementing the most appropriate analysis technique. The literature discussed in the paper is focused on human capital migration and urban attractiveness. Its similarity with the current study work is the focus on the relationship between urban environment components and human capital. However, the cited studies lack the “spatial/relational” approach to urban regions which means that the effects of developments in settlements neighbouring the region were ignored. The contribution which we intend to make with the current study is to adapt the spatial econometric analysis to the problem of human capital attraction. Literature review is followed by data used in the empirical part of the study, and brief information on spatial econometric analysis. Next, findings of the empirical spatial econometric analysis of Turkey’s 81 urban regions are provided. Overall, the analysis indicated that undergraduate and post-graduate migrants care about the social prosperity of the neighbouring environment of destination province. The last part concludes with an interpretation of empirical study findings and discusses relevant urban and regional policy instruments.

Human capital is a category that has been the subject of economists’ considerations for years. Numerous concepts, research approaches and various ways of classifying capital have appeared. Since the 1990s, in accordance with the fundamental principle of dualism, according to which capital is an abstract category, an alternative scientific research program has been conducted in the field of measuring human capital and fair wages. This program was initiated by M. Dobija and has been followed by a team of researchers from the Cracow University of Economics. The program in question is based on a proper understanding of the capital category. It has been consistently developing, and the scientific research covers a wide range of theories related to human capital and fair remuneration. The purpose of this study is to present the impact of capital from experience on the level of the fair remuneration of employees. The human capital model, in the presented considerations enables the measurement of employee qualifications in monetary units and a fair pay model. A case study on the impact from experience capital on the level of fair remuneration of employees was also presented.
Program ten zapoczątkował M. Dobija, a kontynuuje go zespół badaczy z UEK w Krakowie.

The consequence of the dynamically ongoing changes is a growing area of uncertainty and social risks. Inability to cope with the permanently occurring uncertainty on the one hand leads to several negative consequences, such as a sense of alienation, meaninglessness, or helplessness, and on the other – increases the need for development of powers to plan one’s own career path or to cope with new challenges. The demand for counseling is not only in individuals who want to quickly and effectively develop their own careers, but also in individuals that fall out of the mainstream, and are not able to function in the realities of today’s labour markets or to fulfil their professional and family roles. The paper presents an analysis of the role of guidance, resulting from the implementation of modern paradigms of social policy (anticipatory, investment, activating), and biographical and emancipation counselling models in increasing human and social capital.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the issues regarding the development and accumulation of human capital in Poland in 1998-2012, which have been analysed in respect of the formation of social capital resources. The project aims to verify a hypothesis assuming that Poland is characterized by an insufficient synergy in the development of these two types of capital. It has been presumed that this inconsistency reduces the benefits flowing from human capital accumulation processes and may create a significant barrier to achieving a higher level of development. These speculations have been presented in a broader view on the factors which „mobilize” the human capital to function – from the perspective of the components comprising the intellectual capital. In order to illustrate the position of Poland and the challenges facing the country, the analysis has been formed in an international context. The comparative analyses also use the data provided by various social surveys, such as e.g. the European Social Value, the World Values Survey, the Social Diagnosis, the World Economic Forum’s reports, the results of the research by C. Yeh-Yun Lin and L. Edvinsson (conducted among the group of 40 countries in 1995-2008) as well as the author’s own research work. The confrontation of the paths of the development of human capital and social capital in Poland in 1998-2012 reveals a positive upward trend for these two types of capital. Such harmony towards the development may largely be attributed to the positive influence of human capital on social capital. Low social capital resources make it difficult for such a relationship to occur the other way round. However, this could hardly be called the integration of development processes, since the fundamental problem concerns the differential development dynamics of these two types of capital (higher for human capital, lower for social capital), as well as extremely low social capital resources in Poland at the beginning of the transformation. This indicates that differences in human and social capital may continue to increase in the future. The insufficient integration of the development of human and social capital seems as a severe limitation of the innovativeness and the effective use of human capital in action.

This article aims to confirm the thesis that structural capital (SC) is a framework for intellectual capital (IC) in an organization, which allows proper configuration of intangibles. Therefore, in the resource-based view, it determines its strategic character. Realizing such a goal, the author pays attention to the nature of relations and connections of individual components of IC, indicating that the SC is the key factor creating intangible assets of the organization as a source of gaining competitive advantage. The reason for taking up this issue is that, despite years of discussion in the field of IC, there are still unanswered questions concerning the management of an organization’s IC, especially its planning and development. The defined knowledge gap concerns the source of strategic characteristics of IC, which, according to the resources-based view, are its rarity, originality, and the inability to be substituted or copied. The ability to shape the strategic value of intangibles makes this source itself a strategic resource and identifying it can change the way we understand IC. To achieve the paper's aim and fill the knowledge gap, the author asks whether SC can provide the characteristics of IC mentioned above and whether the strategic character of IC can be achieved independently of SC. The review and theoretical considerations are based on the analysis of the literature on IC and selected issues that are not directly related to IC, but of which the subject touches on the intangible assets commonly considered to be components of IC, such as the issue of functional stupidity, knowledge management, or resource theory. As a result of the analysis of features and characteristics of SC, the author concludes that SC is responsible for the efficient use of relational capital and human capital potential and thus is a strategic factor shaping IC as a source of achieved competitive advantage. The topic has important practical implications because by confirming the strategic role of SC, indicates the sources of effective creation of IC and its potential. The discussion also identifies directions for further research on this issue, especially the operationalization of IC and its analysis in organizations' internal structures.

As the presented study is part of a larger scientific project (statutory research) entitled Human capital management in the conditions of sustainable development, the conclusions of the analysis are the basis for further work, which will result in the development of a set of good practices for enterprises and other organisations in the field of human capital management in terms of using the potential and competences of employees active in the area of social work. The diagnosed tendency of the Polish population to work for the benefit of the social good allows the author to conclude that enterprises that want to implement the SDS should use the potential existing in socially engaged employees.

There have been various transformations in the Polish system of education and instruction taking place for several dozens of years. Currently, the most significant issue is to adjust the school curricula to the changing societal needs and to develop some methods that would make it easier for young people to obtain their professional experience and expertise after their entrance to the labor market. The transformation processes in the contemporary world trigger changes related to an increase in education in a human life, as they constitute the factor of socio-economic development.

The article includes the content of sample experiments whose results may be useful in the management of human capital creativity. It presents selected experiment concepts concerning ideational fluency, flexibility and originality and their subordination to basic patterns: simple real experimental patterns, simple basic pre-experimental patterns, simple basic quasi-experimental patterns. In addition, it includes the account of the experiment on attitude shaping. Methodical, ethical and economic limits of experiment application were determined, based on the analysis of reference books related to the method of the experiment and creativity management. The way to understand the constraints is included below in the glossary of key phrases. The subject of the study was chosen on the basis of the existent research gap. As results from analyses based on the study of foreign reference books conducted by J. Samul [2015], the experiment is still a rarely used research method in the area of human capital management. It can, therefore, be concluded that the same also (and perhaps even more so) applies to experiments concerning the management of employee creativity.

Research background: The role of human capital in modern economy development is as important as that of material growth factors. According to the three-sector model theory, economic growth is associated with the process of labour force leaving the primary sector. The research issue addressed in this paper was the human capital level estimation in European NUTS 2 regions and the relationship between the human capital level and sectoral structure of the economy. Purpose of the article: The article aimed to verify the hypotheses of absolute and conditional human capital convergence in European NUTS 2 regions. The analysis covered the 2005-2020 period for European NUTS 2 regions and two subgroups: the CEE regions and the Western European regions. Methods: A composite indicator approach was adopted to measure human capital levels in NUTS 2 regions. In order to verify the absolute and conditional b-convergence hypotheses, dynamic panel data models were estimated. The Blundell and Bond system-GMM estimator with parameter standard errors robust to heteroscedasticity was used. Findings & value added: The study positively verified the hypotheses of absolute and conditional convergence in each group of regions. Percentages of employees in sectors proved to be the steady-state determinants. The time needed to reduce differences occurring in human capital levels by half (a half-life) was about 11 times greater for the CEE regions than for the Western European ones. The value added of the article lies in proving the relationship between the sectoral structure of employees and the pace of human capital convergence in European NUTS 2 regions.

The aim of the article was to identify and quantify the impact of human potential on the level of innovation of the Visegrad Group (V4) countries. In the theoretical part of the considerations, a critical analysis of the literature on the subject and a library query were used, while in the empirical part a statistical analysis was applied, which included the characteristics of a sample of selected features, an analysis of a series of correlations examining the matching of features, and an analysis of the results obtained. The collected data was compiled using descriptive statistics - average values, dynamics of changes, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. In the course of the analysis, it was possible to identify several dependencies with a fairly strong or moderate strength of the relationship. The main conclusions include the fact that there is a fairly strong positive correlation between human resources in science and technology and expenditure on research and development in the enterprise sector. The practical implication of the study may be the fact of diagnosing the main attributes of human capital which, in turn, may be interpreted as outlining a certain field for the application of a targeted policy aimed at increasing the innovativeness of the Visegrad Group.

Improving the lives of citizens requires modern management architects to implement modern solutions in various areas of social life. Undoubtedly, local government administration, as the closest public authority to man, must be efficiently managed in order to effectively manage others. The influence of international cooperation on the development of states and organizations is as old an issue as international cooperation itself. However, the subject matter discussed in this article is current and important for the area of management sciences, because it treats this as a contemporary development of human resources management in local government administration within similar but different legal and organizational systems functioning in the European Union. Therefore, this article presents the main research problem, which will concern the elements of international cooperation, which are covered by local government administration bodies in the district of Żywiec, affect the management of human resources and their development and what changes are introduced in ZZL of local government administration. The subject matter required conducting research on the basis of the phenomenological trend in order to better understand the processes taking place with the participation of the human factor.

The article looks at the issue of public health understood as an important factor of production. The author also analyzes the impact of the population’s health on economic growth. Korporowicz discusses a variety of approaches to public health, with a particular emphasis on a socioeconomic approach. She highlights the economic aspect of health as a component of human capital that creates the basis for examining living conditions and socioeconomic development. Health also needs to be evaluated for the purposes of economic calculations in the area of health protection policies, the author says. Such evaluations are used to determine the costs of health insurance, for example in the case of car accidents. The author counters a popular belief that the level of human capital is exclusively associated with education and public spending on education. According to Korporowicz, the health status of the population influences the level of human capital, while healthcare needs to be treated as a major socioeconomic category. Health is a resource that is subject to wear and can be enhanced and partly replenished by adequate investment. It plays an increasingly important role in the structure of production. Without it, uninhibited economic growth is impossible, the author argues. Korporowicz sets out to prove that health and healthcare can be analyzed in terms of the theory of public goods. Health is an asset that can be used in a specific way, the author says, but its benefits cannot be directly accessed through the market; nor is health subject to competition because the more health there is among individuals, the more society benefits as a whole. This is what sets public goods apart from private goods, which means that the idea of analyzing health on the basis of the public goods theory is justified, the author argues. It needs to be assumed that economic growth is impossible without a healthy and efficiently functioning innovative and creative society, Korporowicz adds. In modern economies, economic efficiency strongly depends on the intellectual potential and health of the population, the author concludes.

The paper argues about the role of higher education not only in terms of knowledge transfer andacquisition of vocational skills among young people, that is, the creation of qualified human capital  for the needs of the economy, but also in terms of implementation of the educational role of the university, one currently underrated. It is aimed at the education of creative, open-minded, responsible graduates, capable of understanding a dynamically changing reality, able to adapt to changes flexibly, and accept responsibility for their own development. The article presents an example of good practices in the field of comprehensive student support in higher education as developed by the University of Dąbrowa Górnicza. This approach, in addition to improving the professional potential of students, is also focused on forming their values, goals, attitudes and beliefs which will significantly affect their behavior and the way they use the acquired knowledge in the future.

Aim/purpose – Theoretical arguments about the impact of corruption on economic growth have divided economists into two groups. The first one believes that corruption is an obstruction to economic growth and development while the second – that corruption plays a positive role in the development process. Therefore, the arguments on the effects of corruption on economic growth are inconclusive. This study investigates the effects of corruption on economic growth as measured in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita growth in Nigeria and India due to the pervasive corruption in the two low-income countries. Design/methodology/approach – The study employed Mo’s framework (2001) for investigating corruption and growth mechanism. The data for the study which covered 1980-2015 was extracted from the World Bank data repository. Corruption was measured by the Corruption Perception Index. Other variables are population growth rate, trade openness, education and the output of agriculture, industry and service sectors. Correlation coefficients were used to show a correlation between corruption and GDP growth rate for both countries. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression was used to estimate the effects of corruption on economic growth. Findings – The major findings of the study are: (1) Corruption has a stifling effect on economic growth when the measures of human capital, political instability and capital formation were not included in the estimation for India; (2) Corruption has a positive effect on economic growth when the measures of human capital, political instability and capital formation were included interchangeably and combined together in the estimation for India; (3) Corruption has a stifling effect on economic growth when the measures of human capital, political instability and capital formation were both included and excluded in the estimation for Nigeria; and (4) The transmission mechanism results show that corruption adversely affects economic growth through investment and human capital in both countries. Research implications/limitations – The implications of this study are that corruption produces a dampening effect on growth in both countries and the transmission channels were through investment and human capital. The limitation of the study has to do with the data. A better measure of corruption aside corruption perception index may produce different results. Originality/value/contribution – The unique contribution of the study is the investigation of the channel through which corruption affects economic growth in India and Nigeria.

Opis:
Human capital is generally assumed to be the most significant element of the intellectual capital, which brings special contribution in building company value. Thus, managers are interested in gaining and maintaining the personnel that has a significant competence potential (knowledge, skills, attitudes, motivation). Therefore, when attempting to establish factors that allow to create value in an organization on the basis of human capital, it becomes necessary to account for the examination of organizational context itself. However, such research should not only focus on the organizational context as such, separately, but examine organizational context in its relation to professional functioning of the employees. One of the perspectives of approaching this aspect of organizational context is the measurement of employee‑organization fit.

Trust is one of the central values in social and organisational life. Values are created by particular people or specified social groups. Human resource management in an organisation should therefore establish proper interpersonal relations based on trust. The literature on the subject presents many definitions and statements of researchers, referring to the activities which build trust. Trust building in the organisation is an element connecting employees with the organisation. The role of staff management is to present employee-friendly behaviours and to avoid behaviours which undermine trust. There is therefore an urgent need for trust management in modern organisations.

Based on the analysis of the existing methodology, an author's approach to assessing the competitiveness of human capital at various economic levels is developed, which is based on a comparative evaluation of the multitude of characteristics of such capital, the construction of matrices with a gradation of such an estimate. Its use makes it possible to determine to what extent, in what directions of development of human capital there is a lag from other competing entities, which leads to the loss of possible benefits from its use in the economy. The main results of approbation of such an assessment in Ukraine are revealed, which show negative trends, a crisis of social responsibility, the need for innovative changes in the development of human capital in order to increase its competitiveness.

Opis:
Przejawia się on m.in. w umiejętnościach, wiedzy, zdolnościach, zdrowiu.
While characterising the human capital, there is emphasised that it is what is produced and added to the human being's life, is manifested, inter alia, in skills, knowledge, abilities, health. This resource may be bigger or smaller, it can be formed and developed through investment in the human being but it also is subject to depreciation. The deliberations in the article are focused on the issues connected with investing by households in their members' capital. The very effect of activities undertaken by the household connected with its members' needs is creation of human capital both in quantitative and qualitative terms. The areas of carried out investments taken into account in the article are education, health and culture.

The main aim of the article is to estimate the resources of human capital and its differentiation in the counties of Warmia and Mazury. There was applied the synthetic indicator of human capital (WZKL) on which basis there was made a hierarchy of counties. The analysis was carried out in spatial and time dimension, using data from the Local Data Bank from the Central Statistical Office and the censuses. The analysis covers 2002 and 2011. In those years the censuses were conducted, which are the only reliable source of information about education an essential component of human capital. The purpose of the study is to find answers to research questions: what is the state of human capital, what is its spatial differentiation, and what changes have occurred in the period 2002–2011 in the counties of Warmia and Mazury?

In a modern economy human capital is the basic resource, directly influencing production and the financial results of the enterprise. Employee involvement determines their better job performance and the achievement of better financial results. The analysed companies – winners of the contest named Best Employer in Poland demonstrated increasing effectiveness and profitability of their activities which was shown by the calculated coefficients. The human capital coefficients based on the data from financial reports do not reflect the proper analysis of changes in return on investment and human capital productivity dependent on the level of employee involvement. A proper evaluation should concern not only financial results such as sales revenues, but also non-financial results.

The article offers a synthetic presentation of the results of analyses of diverse data resources and other scientific information concerning the healthcare in Poland. These studies were conducted in order to put forward positive changes that are not only to prevent the fall of the system, which is highly probable, but also to improve the availability of medical services and increase their quality. These studies are of major importance because the availability of medical (healthcare) services is largely determined by whether it is possible to implement the idea of sustainable development among employees, which indirectly determines the possibility of implementing sustainable development principles incorporated into legal circulation under one of the first articles of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. The concept of sustainable development is not only one of the important reasons which call for modernisation of the functioning of the healthcare system, but also an idea which, once applied, may be helpful in solving healthcare problems. Considering the fact that the largest problem of this system in Poland lies in the shortage of employees, it becomes clear that by trying to ensure sustainable development of employees working in other industries, first, it is necessary to take care of their health, which must lead through sustainable development of healthcare workers. The aim of the article is to present the comprehensive nature of the idea of sustainable development of employees, the role of health protection in achieving a balance by employees, and to show the way to build integrated programmes to maintain the health of employees and their families against the background of the limitations of the Polish healthcare system.

The paper aims to identify potential threats and opportunities in reference with combining full-time studies with gainful employment from the perspective of future transition of the graduates to the labor market. A hypothesis whether the job of the full-time students provides professional experience, required by employers, was verified. Moreover, it discusses if their professional activity may constitute a solid tie between education and the work after graduation, when continued at the same workplace. The conclusions were drawn, based on the results of the survey conducted over a population of students in the master’s degree course in economics at the University of Economics in Katowice in years 20142016. According to the survey, students rarely undertake job in compliance with their area of study, however, the majority gains valuable skills and competences. Additionally, it proves there exist certain obstacles while combining studies with job which poses a real threat to educational capital. The research also unveiled that less than one third of the students consider present job as a running start to future employment, mainly due to their lack of interest in such a solution.

This paper proposes a dynamic economic model with health, human capital and wealth accumulation with elastic labor supply. The economic system consists of one industrial, one health, and one education sector. Our model is a synthesis of four main models in economic theory: Solow’s one-sector neoclassical growth mode, the Uzawa-Lucas two sector model, Arrow’s learning by doing model, and Grossman’s growth model with health. The model also includes Zhang’s idea about creative leisure or learning by consuming. Demand and supply of health service and education are determined by market mechanism. The model describes dynamic interdependence among wealth, health, human capital, economic structure, and time distribution among work, health caring, and education under perfect competition. We simulate the model and examine effects of changes in the propensity to consume health caring, the efficiency of producing health caring, the propensity to receive education, and the propensity to save.

Competitiveness is a key factor determining the development of a region and hence the standard of living of its inhabitants, and human capital is one of the most important factors enabling improvement of regional competitiveness. The aim of the presented research is to analyse the spatial differentiation of the level of human capital in the regions of the European Union (EU) in relation to their level of competitiveness. The results show significant disproportions in this respect, especially between the so-called old and new EU. The higher levels of human capital in the old EU regions were also generally accompanied by a higher level of competitiveness. In the long run, this will lead to an increase in regional disparities in development.

Research background: The subject of the study is the disproportionate development of rural and urban areas in terms of human capital in the context of the convergence process. Purpose of the article: The main goal of the study is to assess the rural-urban disparities on the educational attainment of the population (adopted as a human capital proxy), based on the example of Poland. Methods: The Bray-Curtis measure of structures diversity, the Kruskal-Wallis test and regression analysis were applied to investigate the scale and dynamic of the rural-urban educational divide in Poland in the period 1988-2018. Findings & Value added: The paper emphasizes the aspect of rural-urban differences in the Polish economy and their dynamic nature. Studies have revealed that in 1988-2018, in Poland, the disparity in educational attainment between rural and urban populations was gradually reduced. This process, however, was not accompanied by the reduction of internal educational disparities in the rural space. The study results are helpful in verifying the effectiveness of public funds, allocated in recent years in order to accelerate the multi-functional development of rural areas in Poland and other CEE countries.

Purpose: Comparative analysis of human capital and its efficiency in enterprises with various business profiles, especially the so-called old and new economy. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis was carried out on the example of companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange operating in the industrial and high-technology sectors. For its purposes, indicators based on financial data and used, among others in the method of assessing the efficiency of intellectual capital - VAIC. Findings: The obtained results allow to conclude that the situation in terms of human capital level and its efficiency, including labour efficiency, in the analysed enterprises is highly diversified. These differences not only exist between companies from different sectors, but also within individual sectors, industrial as well as high-tech. Companies from high-tech sectors are generally characterized by a higher human capital level, as well as its efficiency, which is particularly distinguished by the sector Video Games Developers. Research limitations/implications: Due to the limited quantitative research sample, compared to the total number of companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and the industries and sectors they represent, the results obtained and the conclusions drawn on their basis can be treated as preliminary and contributing to further broader research. Practical implications: As the results of the analysis show how individual industrial and high technology companies compare to the competition in terms of the level and efficiency of human capital, it may be an indication for their management boards of the need for actions aimed at improving the efficiency of human capital. Social implications: As the subject of the analysis is human capital in an enterprise, its results may contribute to changes in the field of corporate social responsibility in the analysed enterprises in the area of employees. Originality/value: The topic of the article is not new, but in the literature there are hardly any studies on the assessment of the efficiency of human capital in the intersectoral approach.

In this study, I investigated how different forms of human capital and social capital of new Chinese immigrants affect their job-search and job transitions in the Flushing area. I conducted sixteen indepth interviews with new Chinese immigrants who were seeking job opportunities within Flushing, documenting not only their personal background but also their immigration and working experiences in both China and the United States. Results indicate that the aggregation of certain human capital has positive influence on immigrants’ income, rather on immigrants’ job-findings and job transitions. The efficiency of social ties, instead of strength of social ties, is a more significant unit of analysis in the co-ethnic labor market. Though immigrants’ efficient social ties may be helpful for finding their first jobs in the U.S., the efficiency of social ties with regards to job-searching may dramatically decrease as immigrants stay longer in the U.S. As a result, social ties may not have a salient influence on immigrants’ job transitions.

Purpose: Empirical results about the direct relation of knowledge leading to financial performance at a firm is dispersed. This study aims to examine the impact intellectual capital (IC) has on firm performance in Polish and Dutch listed firms. Methodology: Quantitative data is collected based on audited annual reports from the top 20 companies listed at the Warsaw Stock Exchange and Amsterdam Stock Exchange between 2007 and 2011. IC is measured using the VAIC methodology with its individual elements of HCE, SCE, and CEE. Direct relations between ICE, HCE, and SCE and five measures of firm performance are statistically analysed. Results: The results suggest that there is a direct positive relationship between ICE and firm performance of Polish and Dutch listed firms, particularly with ROA, ROE, EP, and to a lesser extent with ATO. Firms listed in Poland provide a stronger positive ICE relation to ROA and ROE where firms listed in the Netherlands provide a stronger positive ICE relation to EP. Regarding individual elements, HCE relates highly positive to ROA, ROE, and EP where SCE finds only partial negative relation with ATO. Implications: Nurturing IC and in particular HC confirms the importance of firm knowledge and employees with right training and other support. Additionally, further clarification regarding SC is required. Originality: This paper presents the first study of the IC relationship with firm performance in Poland as well in the Netherlands. Additionally, the comparison between firms of both countries establishes a novelty in IC research.

Based on social network theory, the study explained the digital transformation process of startups in Vietnam during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study examined the relationship between social capital, human capital, access to resources, and digital transformation of startups in Vietnam. The study used Partial Least Squares - Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) with a sample size of 230 startups managers. The results show that there are positive and statistically significant relationships between social capital, human capital, access to resources, and digital transformation. The results also reveal the partial mediating roles of access to resources and human capital in the relationship between social capital and digital transformation. The results proposed some managerial implications for startups managers in building relationship networks with stakeholders such as government agencies and business partners (customers, competitors, suppliers, and providers of digital platform services). Through managers' social capital, accessible resources and the improvement of human capital have accelerated digital transformation for startups to escape the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the study presented some limitations and directions for further research.

Opis:
Economies not only grow, but also change their output structure in the process. Although structural changes take place throughout the whole process of economic development, the author identifies certain phases of that process, which in his opinion are of particular significance. They are: industrialisation (a shift in the development engine role from agriculture to industry) and an emerging engine role of human capital-intensive services (a shift of dominance from industry to services). The first of these phases has been intellectually much better researched than the second. There are numerous researches that prove general standardised patterns of structural transformation as well as differences between them. The author notes that the inflection point, when the share of the manufacturing sector reaches its maximum level (between 30% and 40% GDP), is probably somewhat overstated, given various distortions generated by activist developmental strategies. Also, he points out to the studies that place the beginning of intensive growth (growth on per capita basis) in poor countries at a much earlier date than it would arise from the established literature sources. The second phase is less well recognised both theoretically and empirically. There are no ‘fixed’ issues and the theoretical part, as well as the empirical, are at the very early stage of development. The only certain fact, or constant, is the positive correlation between the level of development (in terms of GNP p.c.) and the share of human capital-intensive services  calculated in different ways. The author’s contribution to the study of the second phase of transformations concerns the link between the level of GNP p.c. and the level of economic and civic freedoms. It is stressed that while in the industrialisation process the correlation between the two variables is weak, it is much stronger in the second major phase of emerging dominance of human capital-intensive services.

Kazakhstan takes confident steps in the direction of integration into world information space. For example, in 2017 the state program "Digital Kazakhstan" whose implementation will allow development on the basis of experience of the developed countries various digital services, including health care and education was adopted. Therefore, the adopted and realized state programs of strategic nature reflecting both economic and social policy of the state have to be under construction for the development of cross-cultural communications and the international integration that in turn, will give the forward growth of the human capital quality. Purpose. Based on the experience of the developed European countries, the article aims at introducing proposals for the educational and health services quality improvement as this will contribute to the qualitative development of human capital in Kazakhstan. Methods. For the descriptive procedures at the abstract’s theoretical part logical method has been applied; when determining the index of human development dynamics in Kazakhstan, other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), certain European states the comparative analysis has been carried out; synthesis of foreign experience in formation of social and economic policy of the state has been performed. Results. The level of development of human capital, combining such components as literacy, health, longevity and the very quality of life, is an indicator of the welfare and prosperity of the country. Kazakhstan's rating on the human development index shows positive growth dynamics, which indicates the available opportunities to enter the group of countries with a very high HDI level. Growth can be ensured by improving education indicators and the health status of the population. For the qualitative growth of human capital in Kazakhstan, along with the implementation of a number of adopted state programs in the field of educational and medical services, it has been proposed to continue strengthening of international educational and scientific ties as forms of intercultural communication that facilitate the exchange of information, traditions, technologies, research; to provide digital literacy to the population of remote villages and settlements; to focus on increasing of the population's literacy in health issues for the effective use of the health system.

Opis:
Research background: Currently the topic of a company's intellectual capital is being widely investigated by various researchers. Nevertheless, only a small number of studies on the company's intellectual capital impact on its market value were conducted. What is more, the concept of a company's intellectual capital itself is not unified. There are some discrepancies in defining a company's intellectual capital, unifying structural model of the company's intellectual capital, and harmonizing the research methods and models of how to evaluate a company's intellectual capital. Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to examine various scientific approaches of the company's intellectual capital and its impact on the market value of a respective company; to prepare a model of company's intellectual capital and its impact on the market value. What is more, the aim of this article is to check and test the model effectiveness using an example of the Baltic States listed companies. Methods: Data on 58 Baltic States' companies that are listed in Nasdaq Baltic stock exchange were taken as the basis of the research. Based on four component model (human capital, structural capital, juridical capital, relational capital) a set of indicators for assessing company's intellectual capital was formed. Expert evaluation was used in order to assign weights for different structural parts of intellectual capital. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted in order to find out what factors are the most significant for a company's intellectual capital. In order to find out how specific elements affect company's intellectual capital, a pair-wise multiple correlation and regression analysis were used. An average comparison method was used to reveal differences between companies of different countries. Findings & Value added: The study contributes to the Baltic States' knowledge on intellectual capital. It was detected that it is appropriate to use human capital, structural capital, juridical capital, and relational capital structural parts as components of company's intellectual capital while investigating its impact on market value of a respective company. According to the obtained results, the model of a company's intellectual capital and its impact on the market value was created, optimized, and its validity checked using exploratory factor analysis. The model was used to test the Baltic States listed companies and how their intellectual capital affects the market value. It was identified that intellectual capital in the listed companies of the Baltic States has a positive impact on their market value. Nevertheless, the study revealed that intellectual capital structural parts do not equally affect the market value of listed companies. The findings support the conclusion that human capital and relational capital have the greatest influence on the market value of listed companies. Companies where structural capital comprises the largest proportion of intellectual capital had lower levels of intellectual capital aggregated index, which could be examined in future studies.

The paper contains analyses of life expectancy mainly in the context of its relation to the level of individual’s education. The data was referred to the specific Eurostat researches which take the above mentioned criterion of population’s division into consideration. 14 EU countries (including Poland) and 2 countries, which are not in the EU territory, were included in the research. The project was carried out from 2007 to 2010. The life expectancy of 30‑year‑old individuals was examined, assuming that the first effects of investment in the human capital connected with education are revealed at this age (deliberations were set in the economic theory of the human capital).

As spatial diversity of economic development is one of the main problems of modern economies, researchers have attempted to define the conditions and factors influencing this phenomenon. Among others, two intangible factors are suggested: human capital and social capital (Herbst ed. 2007). The primary objective of this work is a spatial and spatio-temporal analysis of the diversification of human and social capital within the Polish NUTS 3 subregions. The two detailed targets are constructing composite indicator of both of the mentioned types of capital as well as examining spatial interactions between human capital, social capital and the GNP level per capita. The large diversification of human and social capital in the Polish subregions has been confirmed. Clusters of regions with low levels of human capital have been indicated, whereas in the case of social capital a grouping of its high values was observed. The research also confirmed the positive correlation between GNP per capita and human capital, with high values of both variables in the larget cities. Additionally, there are some subregions with high levels of economic development surrounded by low levels of human and social capital (Łódź, Szczecin, Wrocław). It is possible that high level of GNPpc in these regions was the incentive causing the relocation of human capital from the neighbouring regions. The correlation between GNPpc and social capital, where significant, is of the low-high type. These subregions are located in the east and south of Poland.

Opis:
The main goal of this study is to make an attempt to estimate the remuneration equitable for a college graduate in Poland. The equitable remuneration should be enough to satisfy needs of the employees and their families as well. The youths, while starting the higher education, dream about the equitable remuneration after being graduated. Every man raises and extends capital for the whole life since the birth to the moment when he takes up a job. The rules according to which the human capital is paid are determined by the nature of the capital itself. The human capital is em-bodied in human resources. The capital is not an abstract idea and it has resources that enable to value the capital in monetary units. In the case of graduates the raised capital is the sum of capital-ized costs of living during the 24 years period and capitalized costs of the professional education during the 5 years period. The capital located in human is often dispersed as a result of illnesses, accidents, unemployment, wars or other random incidents. The employee’s human capital could also decreases as a result of the physical effort connected with the job and depends on time pass-ing. The salary should be the compensation of any loss in the human capital. What’s more, the size of the salary should be also the result of economic constant of potential growth implementation. Previous experiential research prove that the constant mentioned is about 8% per year. The theory of the human capital created by M. Dobija lets us measure the capital included in the youths. Thanks to the idea of the human capital we can also estimate properly the remuneration equitable for a college graduate in Poland, that was proved by consideration above.

Entrepreneurial teams play an extremely important role in the development of any country, especially in developing countries. To understand entrepreneurial teams that operate in a low-technology industry, we rely on the network and human perspective on entrepreneurship. In this paper, we investigate how the social and human capital of entrepreneurial team members influences their ability to identify entrepreneurial opportunities and mobilize external resources. We extend prior research in two ways. First, by using the ordered probit method to measure the identified entrepreneurial opportunities number at the level of entrepreneurial teams. Second, to our knowledge, there is a very small number of studies that have theoretically and empirically investigated the mobilization of external resources, especially at the level of entrepreneurial teams.

Opis:
The author considers the questions relating to the formation of lawyers’ professional traits from the point of view of the significance which human capital and investment in this capital hold in contemporary times. It follows from the analyses, which were carried out, that the dire need for taking up actions with the aim to shape lawyers appears one of the most vital tasks. This requires taking into account visible trends in the changing job market. Another aspect results from the need for multilevel qualifications and conditions behind lawyers’ actions and their decisions. Thus, colleges of higher education which educate prospective lawyers, as well as lawyers’ corporations, are confronted by challenges of forming, in young people, features that are indispensable for them to be valuable lawyers and not only executors of simple activities. The author points to the fact that lawyers need shaping because, among others, during their whole social lives and realization of professional tasks their personality traits and potential related to communication will constantly manifest through accepting and following or rejecting and opposing values, principles, reflexions, empathy, sensitivity, the farthest-fetched imagination, objectivism, cooperation, dialogue, distancing themselves from political disputes, etc. Students of the art of law should be characterized by a changed mentality, new vision of law – service to man, and realization of standards of law, as well as perception of the importance of knowledge, skills, attitudes and competences.

Since the middle of the last century, non-formal education (NFE) has been promoted as a complement to or substitute for formal education. This paper argues for the legitimacy of NFE neither as a complement nor a substitute but as an alternative to formal education. From the findings of a pilot study into four programs in western Uganda, NFE is presented as a viable alternative to formal education for its ability to develop social capital, necessary for building self-reliance in learners.

Human capital is crucial for proper performance of tasks in an enterprise. The aim of the article is to present the human capital as the main resource in building a competitive advantage of the enterprise. The article covers the issue of using human capital as a valuable resource within an organization necessary to create its competitive advantage. Due to the diversity of definitions of „human capital” and the interpretation of the notion of „competitive advantage”, in this study it was assumed that human capital is the fusion of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, abilities, internal motivation and attitudes of employees. The competitive advantage has been defined as a strong asset allowing the company to win with competitors on a local level. The publication was based on the selected literature of the subject and the results of our own research.

Opis:
Africa is regarded as the least developed continent in terms of overall development and specifically in terms of human capital development (HCD) efforts. Research on the determinants of HCD in Africa is scanty, as the literature is dominated by country-specific studies as well as group of country studies that primarily focus on the effect of human capital on growth and other economic development parameters. Therefore, this paper investigates the determinants of human capital development in 33 African countries over a 14-year period from 2000 to 2013. The empirical analysis is predicated on Sen’s capability approach that was modified following Binder and Georgiadis (2011) in order to explicitly account for the role of health, infrastructure and institutions as potential drivers of HCD. This is a departure from previous studies that focused primarily on the role of education. In addition to preliminary tests such as line plot, descriptive statistics and correlation analysis carried out, the data is analysed using panel unit root, co-integration and causality techniques. Findings show that all the variables are integrated of order one while HCD and its determinants have a stable long-run equilibrium relationship. Specifically, all the variables significantly influence HCD in the long run, whereas the contemporaneous models suggest that only institutions matter. Utilizing alternative estimators as well as estimation of subsamples, robustness tests reinforce our findings. Therefore, African governments may consider supporting HCD through sustained investment in the education and health sectors. At the same time, short-term gains may be attained through enhanced institutional quality and infrastructure development.

Family as a historical category has undergone many transformations in the course of history; these transformations were characteristic of various eras. Despite the change of the meaning and model of the family, it has an irreplaceable role for the modern system of the free-market economy, which expresses itself especially in the creation and development of human capital. Human capital considered as the main factor of economic development finds nowhere else such a favorable environment for the emergence and development as in the family. It entails, however, a necessity of bearing considerable costs to ensure its members a better chance of success in professional and social life. As a result, this situation is rebound on the demographic structure of society, because parents reduce the number of children by reason of the necessary input as they want to invest in the ’quality’ of their children’s human capital. Based on the demands for social justice and having regard to the future fate of the aging societies, it is necessary to undertake appropriate action on the grounds of social policy. These activities should be focused in particular on the equitable distribution of burdens, and thus opportunities for the social and professional success of individuals and families, the success that leads to a higher level of social and economic development of the wider community.

The process of development of contemporary enterprises is conditioned by many factors, both interior as well as resulting from the environment in which the entity operates. One of the factors influencing the efficiency of organizations that operate in an uncertain and complex environment are human resources which should have certain competencies, theoretical knowledge, practical skills and adhere to organization’s values which are considered to be important. It is well known that quality of human capital, as well as skilful management of this capital is nowadays the main area of building market position of contemporary enterprises. This paper is an attempt to assess the importance of human factor in development of SME sector companies. The carried out analyses indicate the great importance of human factor in development of small and medium-sized firms on the market. Entrepreneurs representing the surveyed entities value the importance of this factor and estimate that in the coming years human resources will play even greater role in the development of their companies.

Opis:
The author presents the evolution of the theory of economic growth and concludes that fundamental questions about the theory of growth should be addressed by applying a general concept of human capital based on knowledge and qualifications. Human capital is the most comprehensive indicator to describe economic growth and differences in affluence among nations. The analysis is divided into two parts. The first part of the study describes the historical evolution of “economic thought”-from a stage where technological progress was treated as an “exogenous phenomenon” and a veritable “manna from the sky,” as the author describes it, to a situation in which technological progress became an “endogenous variable” resulting from the accumulated know-how. The subsequent evolution of the term involved a reevaluation of the role of the human factor in production. With time, economists discovered that, alongside physical capital, human capital was a prime factor that contributed to growth as a driving force behind technological progress. The second part of the work describes the complex role of human capital in the production process. The author notes that, in a modern economy, the human factor determines the development and implementation of new technologies, in addition to the production process itself. Human capital determines the technology gap, the diffusion of know-how and the efficiency of its adaptation. As a result, investment in human capital is a fundamental factor behind development, the author concludes.

Purpose: The theory of endogenous growth suggests a number of relations between income inequality and human capital. However, empirical evidence in this field is scarce. Therefore, in this paper we aim to demonstrate the existence of interdependencies between income inequality and human capital across OECD countries.Methodology: We present findings of the endogenous growth theory on the mechanisms linking inequality with human capital. Subsequently, we attempt to verify these links empirically using the regression function estimated by means of the generalized method of moments (GMM). The empirical analysis is based on panel data from 1995–2010.Findings: The results of the study reveal the existence of a negative relationship between income inequality and health indicators (infant mortality and maternal mortality). However, we did not reach an authoritative conclusion about the relationship between income inequality and quantitative indicators of educational achievement.Research limitations: Research is limited to the sample of OECD countries. Interdependencies between income inequality and human capital could be captured more clearly using a broader sample.Originality: This paper presents one of few studies testing the relation between human capital and income inequality. The use of high-quality empirical data on inequality (SWIID data) and the generalized method of moments made it possible to contribute new arguments to the discussion of empirical analyses of these economic categories.

Human capital is one of the key driving factors of productivity growth, thus it is necessary to evaluate the differences between generations in this area, including chosen demographic and socio- economic characteristics. One of major variable is the size of the place of residence. According to the size of the city there are different availability of infrastructure – educational, cultural, as well as to healthcare and the workplaces. The aim of this paper is the assessment of the level and structure of human capital of cities residents taking into consideration two criteria – size of cities and belonging to various generations in Poland. The empirical analysis is based on the Social Diagnosis data. In statistical analysis the two-way analysis of variance, as well as descriptive statistics and simple tests are used.

Human capital is the core resource that companies have and which they should accumulate. Efficiency of enterprises’ operations does not depend on possession of particular type of capital, but is a result of its skilful management. Thus effective human capital management in enterprises is one of key conditions of their market success. Stimulating creativity of employees together with improvement in knowledge and competence management are areas, which companies are increasingly focusing on.

Research background: Importance of intangible resources for country's economic growth is widely recognized. However, empirical evidence of this influence is hard to show due to measurement limitations of intangible resources. Majority of empirical studies concentrates on the analysis of a specific type of intangible resource's influence on economic growth. National intellectual capital concept provides background for an integrated assessment of the country's intangible resources. This new approach enables the estimation of intangible resources' influence to economic growth in a more complex way. Purpose of the article: a) To examine various scientific approaches of the national intellectual capital and its impact on the economic growth; b) to offer a measurement model of the national intellectual capital influence on economic growth; c) to evaluate the specific European Union countries' intellectual capital's effect on their economic growth. Methods: Econometric analysis; refined factor value computation method using the standardized regression coefficients; the SAW method; expert evaluation, cluster analysis; correlation and regression analyses. Findings & Value added: A review of the economic growth theories showed that structural components of intellectual capital (human capital, structural capital, social capital, relational capital) in economic growth theories are analyzed as key determinants of economic growth. Our proposed research methodology consists time lag between variables and this let us evaluate casual relation. Empirical analysis of 25 European Union countries' intellectual capital's effect on their economic growth rate revealed that national intellectual capital and the countries' level of economic development have statistically significant impact on economic growth rate. The analysis of intellectual capital components' influence on economic growth rate of 25 European Union countries showed that only human capital and the level of economic development have statistically significant influence. A more comprehensive human capital's influence on economic growth analysis revealed that 63.1 percent of the long-term economic growth rate in 25 European Union countries can be explained by differences in their economic development level and differences in educational achievement factor values. Moreover, analysis of national intellectual capital effect on economic growth in separate clusters allowed to identify influence differences in each group of countries.
