    This main aim of this paper is to present some theoretical considerations about the need for a cultural approach in modern developmental psychology. Starting with a critique of the over-universalisation of developmental research in American psychology, the authors present a paradigm of a relational-developmental system, using the concept of embodiment and a cultural approach in psychological research, in which the principal object of analysis is person-in-action as a culturally inclusive alternative for developmental psychology. This approach will be exemplified by research on development through guided participation and the role of shame in moral and social development in Confucian culture.

    This article introduces so-called honour crimes (sometimes termed honour based violence), which tends to occur within Islamic communities located within ‘host’ countries in Europe. It is a very specific type of crime, which takes place in the family setting in Muslim families, and is in direct contradiction with the democratic values and legal systems of Western states. The aim of this paper is to introduce the issue and illustrate it in relation to selected cases. It offers both an evaluative and descriptive stance.

    According to Wierzbicka (1999), one of the core values of Polish culture is sincerity and emotional frankness, in this study we tested this assumption analyzing display rules operating between friends. 100 respondents completed modified version of the Display Rule Assessment Inventory (Matsumoto, Yoo, Hirayama, & Petrova, 2005). Results show that Polish participants endorse more expression with close friends than with acquaintances and strangers. The obtained differences between those groups were quite large and similar to a pattern typical for collectivistic cultures. On the other hand, we reported high level of overall expressivity, typical of individualism. Such a high expressivity was found for all studied emotions, but pride, which is consistent with previous research on self-presentational modesty in Polish culture (e.g. Dabul, Wosińska, Cialdini, Mandal, & Dion, 1997).

    The article is focused on application psychological intercultural approach based on cross – cultural challenges. In the paper the theory, procedures were presented and what is most interested one example of real organisation which can be called “intercultural competence excellence”. In the first part of the paper, the report and “working’ definition of intercultural competencies are described and intercultural approach based on Bennet, Deardorff and Heyward were presented. Having a framework of intercultural competence such as these presented and discussed above, the criteria of ICC was presented. They was used to described the CICA as an organisation. The real example can be helpful in ensuring a more comprehensive, integrated approach in everyday work and life and promoting a better cross-cultural dialogue.

    This article presents the cultural factors which contribute to understanding psychological health and pathology. The definitions of understanding psychological health and ways of approaching treatment were analysed, with particular emphasis on the role of religion. Understanding health and pathology was analysed from the perspective of the distinction between illness and disease. Four academic disciplines tackling this topic – psychology of religion, cultural psychology, indigenous psychology and clinical psychology – were presented as specific ways of approaching a conceptualisation of the above problems.

    Celem artykułu jest ukazanie znaczenia fińskiej emocji kulturowej sisu („wytrzymałość”, „odwaga”, „upór”, „determinacja”) i odczytanie jej w ramach założeń psychologii kulturowej emocji R. Shwe- dera. Traktowanie emocji jako determinowanych kulturowo skryptów i zastosowanie mitoanalizy (Shweder, Haidt 2005) stwarza narzędzie umożliwiające badanie i adekwatne rozumienie emocji kulturowych. Rozbiór emocji na człony narracyjne umożliwia precyzyjne zdefiniowanie i odczytanie znaczenia emocji kulturowych - nawet tak złożonych, jak sisu.
    The study aims to examine the meaning of the Finnish cultural emotion sisu (“perseverance”, “courage”, “stubborn”, “determination”) and reads it through the paradigm of R. Shweder’s cultural psychology of emotions. The reading of emotions as culturally constructed scripts and applying myth analysis (Shweder, Haidt, 2005) should yield a new framework for examination and adequate comprehension of cultural emotions. The study attempts to expose that by decomposing an emotion-script into its constituent narrative slots, one can make visible the cultural underpinnings of emotions even such indefinable as sisu.

    The text is an introduction to psychological anthropology, a subdiscipline of culturalanthropology that looks into interactions linking cultural phenomena with human psychological processes. The history of the concept of psychological anthropology and its definitions is discussed and then juxtaposed with explanations of the concepts of ethno-psychology, cultural psychology, and cognitive anthropology. The discussion is contextualized by the history of the subdiscipline itself, which over the last 150 years has been developed and co-developed – often in a complex and convoluted way – by subsequent anthropological approaches and trends, with which it has at times been identified.
    Tekst stanowi wprowadzenie do antropologii psychologicznej, subdyscypliny antropologii kulturowej zajmującej się interakcjami łączącymi zjawiska kulturowe z procesami psychologicznymi człowieka. Omówiono historię pojęcia antropologii psychologicznej i jej definicje, a następnie zestawiono ją z objaśnieniami pojęć etnopsychologii, psychologii kulturowej i antropologii poznawczej. Dyskusję kontekstualizuje historia samej subdyscypliny, która na przestrzeni ostatnich 150 lat była rozwijana i współrozwijana – często w sposób złożony i zawiły – przez kolejne podejścia i nurty antropologiczne, z którymi czasami była utożsamiana.

    Schools traditionally operate under a meritocratic system. Those children who fulfil systemic merit deserving criteria are selected as leaders within the school system. Furthermore, it is these children who stand the best chance to gain access to leadership positions once they have left school. Their silk is seen and acknowledged. They have the track record that organisations look at as first selection criteria when they are looking to appoint school leavers with an eye on promotion to leadership positions. This article specifically looks at the issues and develops them in terms of the metaphor of ‘the silk of leadership’.

    The point of departure for the remarks made in my text is Katarzyna Sikorska’s paper, opening a debate on ethical issues involved in the profession of psychologist. The paper itself is, in my opinion, a solid presentation of these issues as they appear in international and Polish codes. Against this backdrop, my remarks concern the situation in Poland. They describe this situation as advanced disintegration of the community of Polish psychologists caused by the weakness of Polish Psychological Association (PTP) and by the failure to take into account the cultural rootedness of most treatments used in psychologists’ work. The latter remark refers to the failure to take into account both the cultural identity of clients and the cultural rootedness of products imported into the country.

    Historically there have been inequities in access to school in South Africa. Differences in languages have also contributed to difficulties. In the present study a Grade One class was observed for a term as they entered formal schooling. Cultural psychology was used as the method, developing a description of the context and narrowing the observations to ten and then five children. Five school homes visits were done and one of these case studies is described here. Given the socio-economic literacy context, the child did extremely well, being self-motivated and supported by an aware single parent. The usefulness of the Cultural Psychological method is described.

Celem opracowania jest wskazanie na ważny moment ewolucji procesów akulturacyjnych we współczesnej Europie. Analizujemy przyczyny wyboru podjętego w Wlk. Brytanii oraz czynniki kolejnego wyboru: między odejściem a pozostaniem Polskich emigrantów i rodzin emigracyjnych w Wielkiej Brytanii. Tekst ma formę przeglądową, z odwołaniem do badań własnych.
    Acculturation processes as complex and multidimensional are analyzed towards different domains, different fields in which both cultures change e.g. political, work, economic, family, social, religion… In all those fields it is important to search for solutions helping to incorporate immigrants in their new societies and allow effective coexistence between majorities and minorities. To analyze post-Brexit concerns of such nature among Polish immigrants, Psychologists from Polish University Abroad in London (PUNO) designed a research program: “Poles in Britain during Brexit.”

    The present study is focussing on the leadership potential at schools that goes unnoticed, unacknowledged and un-nurtured. Traditionally, schools focus on children/learners whose leadership traits are encouraged and developed through conventional structures such as the prefect system and the leadership schools/camps that selected candidates are sent on. By developing the concept of Leadership Cocoons, this study is drawing attention to individuals whose potential for leadership lies hidden in a chrysalis form that is masked for leadership selection by pervasive, generic, norm-generated criteria. Such individuals are trapped in a situation of Perpetual Peripheral Participation around communities of leaders. As a means to explore the above issues, the paradigm of Cultural Psychology has been selected.

    This article presents an analysis of intergroup relations in light of Władysław Witwicki’s cratism theory. His theory allows social relations to be explained in light of the pursuit for a sense of power, although this has never been verified in the psychological laboratory. Because the cratism theory is largely based on the analysis of social relations described in historical documents, this paper presents an attempt to use its basic assumptions to describe the linguistic behavior (and linguistic picture of the world) of a threatened group. The examined material consisted of religious documents of the first Christians, created before and during the growing conflict with an unfriendly/ antagonistic environment. Frequency analysis shows significant changes in the cratic orientation as well as emotions and the evaluation of the social world in conflict conditions.

    The aim of the present paper is the analysis of old nicknames which relate to the way in which our ancestors communicated. The subject of the analysis are proprial items, which were formed in order to indicate if the speakers were telling the truth, or whether they were gossiping, or saying too much, as well as items which evaluated a person because of articulatory features. The present paper is also an attempt to propose research into axiologically marked appelative anthroponyms within the methodology of cultural linguistics, complemented with biological contexts, especially research from the field of evolutionary psychology and biological anthropology.

    The problem of search of an authenticity of the cities looks very actual and draws attention of numerous researchers. In the article the analogy between the human person and the city in this problem is used. For the person, as well as for the city, awareness of own identity is necessary to resist depressive tendencies. It is shown that symptoms of depression of the person are similar to the ones for depression of the cities. The identity of the city necessary for opposition of a depression is offered to be looked for in two planes – historical and geographical (to be looked for in historical and geographical plane). The historical plane is made by local myths and legends of the city and its inhabitants. The geographical plane of identity is concentrated on features of relief, climate, flora and fauna of that region in which the city is located.

    From close to its inception, St. Augustine’s misunderstanding of the nature of ancient Greek philosophy, “Christian philosophy,” and the way the human soul essentially relates to human body caused formal Christian education to be (a) born in a somewhat unhealthy condition, (b) founded upon a devastating mistake of organizational self-misunderstanding, which essentially prevented it from comprehending how human reason could function both abstractly as a contemplative (or speculative) scientific intellect and concretely as a command and control prudential reason. This flaw in Augustinian psychology of the human person and Augustine’s misunderstanding of the nature of ancient Greek philosophy continued to influence Christian education from the start of the Christian West until the Christian and secular universities of today. For contemporary Christian education to preserve its identity in an increasingly fragmented world, a psychology of the human person adequate to explain the essential connection between the human soul and body and the nature of philosophy must replace this flawed Augustinian psychology that continues to plague the contemporary world.

    The aim of this paper is to present the cultural psychology project formulated by Florian Znaniecki. In the first part of the article, the authoress reconstructs the origin of this concept by reviewing the scholar’s early philosophical writings. In the second and third part of this paper, the authoress focuses on presenting the basic categories of Znaniecki’s theory such as culture, culturalism and cultural action and highlights the role of cultural psychology in his scientific system.

    The paper aims at investigating the demonstration of Russian intuition in the contemporary Russian speculative fiction. The research thesis is that the Russians, both presented in literature and within the frames of the national character studies, manifest themselves as the intuitive introvert type according to Carl Gustav Jung’s classification. For validating the thesis, as far as the proposed literary works are concerned, one should use the instruments offered by cultural literary criticism along with the support of non-literary disciplines, such as intercultural communication and ethnopsychology. Moreover, one should consider also notes on Russian national character taken by Jung himself as well as studies on the sociocultural aspect of the analysed works. A wide range of methods and perspectives allows deep research of the “feeling – intuitive” Jungian scale as manifested within literary characters representing the Russian element (also called Russianness) in the selected works, which belong to the most significant and/or popular pieces of contemporary speculative fiction in Russia.

W dociekaniach odnoszę się do najnowszych badań psychologii rozwojowej. Artykuł kończą wnioski własne dotyczące natury ludzkiej w kontekście różnorodności oraz próba oceny tego jak koncepcja natury ludzkiej F. Fukuyamy (2004) wytrzymuje próbę różnorodności kulturowej.
    In the article I attempt to address the question what cultural diversity can teach us about human nature. Knowledge, morality and cooperation are that aspects of human life that tend to show both cultural diversity and similarity between cultures in certain respects. In the text the newest research in developmental psychology is invoked. Finally, in the article I try to asses how F. Fukuyama’s (2004) view on human nature withstand the test of cultural diversity and propose my own conclusions regarding human nature.

    The article expands on a presentation given by the author at an international symposium held at the University of Silesia from May 10-13, 2005, entitled Innovation in Higher Education: A Global Perspective. Perspectives on transformational processes in Higher Education vary widely even after forty years of exploration by psychologists, educators, sociologists, and neuroscientists. West Chester University of Pennsylvania’s Plan of Excellence includes five essential transformations in which is embedded the new Elementary Education Masters Degree Program in Applied Studies in Teaching and Learning. An essential catalyst for transformation is the experience of personal authenticity. As a goal of teacher development, authenticity paradoxically leads to heightened individuation as well as social connectedness and integration. Highlighted in this area of study are components of a six-area framework of Human Development as a formative study for personal, social, cultural, and global transformation. Future implications for questioning and enriching teacher development are explored.

    Artykuł odwołuje się do ustaleń psychologii, zwłaszcza eksperymentalnej psychologii społecznej, jak też socjologii i antropologii kulturowej. Zarysowuje i ilustruje na wybranych przykładach osobliwości uniwersaliów psychologicznych pozbawionych umocowania biologicznego. Jak się argumentuje, są one wytworami przydatności atrybutów lub mechanizmów psychicznych w adaptacjach kulturowych do środowiska naturalnego. Takie powszechniki o kulturowej genezie nie mają odpowiedników w naukach nomotetycznych. Zwykle pojawiają się w rozmaitych kontekstach kulturowych czy historycznych z różną częstością i intensywnością, czasem pełnią tam odmienne funkcje. W rezultacie opisujące je teorie psychologii społecznej nieuchronnie różnią się od teorii charakterystycznych dla nauk przyrodniczych, które bywają spostrzegane przez psychologów społecznych jako niedościgniony ideał.
    The paper builds on settlements of psychology, especially of experimental social psychology, and refers to sociology and cultural anthropology as well. It outlines and illustrate by selected examples the peculiarities of psychological universals without biological foundations. It is argued that they are the results of usefulness of psychological attributes/mechanisms in cultural adaptations to natural environment. The universals of cultural genesis do not have the equivalents in the nomothetical sciences. They usually appear in various cultural/historical contexts with varying frequency and intensity, and sometimes perform there diverse functions. Accordingly, the social psychology theories that focus on such universals unavoidably differ from the theories typical of natural sciences, which are perceived by social psychologists as the matchless ideal.

    The main aim of this article is a draft of so-called psychology of cultural participation by Krystyna Zamiara, which is based on a sample of overcoming a cognitive perspective typical of psychological research participation of individuals in a culture and an extremely anti-individualistic, anti-psychologist perspective typical of cultural sciences, represented in this article by social-regulational concept of culture by Jerzy Kmita. As a result of overcoming limitations deriving from the two extreme points of view, would become possible to determine an area of effective cooperation between them in the research of cultural participation.

    Celem badań była eksploracja sposobów konstruowania tożsamości narracyjnej przez młode osoby dorosłe z niepełnosprawnością fizyczną oraz poszukiwanie czynników społecznych i kulturowych, które mogły wywrzeć wpływ na zróżnicowanie tego rodzaju narracji. W badaniu wykorzystano wywiad na temat historii życia Dana P. McAdamsa. Przebadanych zostało 40 młodych osób dorosłych z różnym rodzajem oraz momentem nabycia niepełnosprawności fizycznej. Wśród respondentów znalazły się zarówno osoby z niepełnosprawnością wzroku, jak i ruchu. Niepełnosprawność osób badanych miała charakter wrodzony lub stanowiła konsekwencję uszkodzenia ciała w biegu życia. Wyniki badań świadczą o tym, iż według respondentów istotny wpływ na kształtowanie się ich tożsamości narracyjnej wywarły trzy grupy czynników: 1) doświadczenia związane z relacjami społecznymi, 2) czynniki kulturowe, szczególnie przekazy medialne, 3) doświadczenia związane z własnym ciałem i jego niepełnosprawnością. W wywiadach na temat historii życia, których udzielili respondenci, można także wyodrębnić czynniki niepowtarzalne, właściwe dla kontekstu historii życia konkretnych osób badanych, które wywarły według nich wpływ na kształtowanie ich narracyjnej tożsamości. Na podstawie analizy literatury przedmiotu [m.in. Edwards 2007, Leszczyńska 2010, Dunn, Burcaw, 2016] można stwierdzić, że wyniki badań stanowią wkład w poszerzenie wiedzy dotyczącej czynników sprzyjających rozwojowi tożsamości narracyjnej osób dotkniętych niepełnosprawnością.
    The aim of the thesis was to explore the different ways of constructing the narrative identity by young adults with physical disability and to look for social and cultural factors which could have impact on the variety of constructions of respondents’ narrations about the one’s own life. The author used the Life Story Interview written by Dan Mc Adams. The examined persons were 40 young adults with different kind and moment of gaining disability. There were persons with motor and the visual disability in the researched group. The disability of answerers was natural or was a cosequence of the impairment of the body during one’s own life. The studies’ outcomes indicate that according to responders’ point of view the main impact on the process of forming their narrative identity have three groups of factors:1) the experiences connected with the social relationships, 2) the cultural factors, especially mass- media, 3) the experiences connected with one’s own body and its impairment. There were also exceptional factors in each individual story which significantly influenced the form of the person’s narrative identity. The analysis of the thematic literature [among others Edwards 2007, Leszczyńska 2010, Dunn, Burcaw 2016] shows that the results of this research may broaden the knowledge about factors which can be helpful in forming the narrative identity of young adults with physical disability.
