The article attempts to analyse the notions of school culture and school climate as well as their definitions, scopes and the applied research approaches. Although such activities have been undertaken and presented both in English and German literature, they have failed to constitute a separate field of analysis in Poland and as such, have been merely addressed on the margins of other problems. In this article, the author points out the positions of researchers who have identified the need to clarify the separate identity of the notions and for this purpose, to adopt appropriate research approaches, often leading, as the author attempts to illustrate, to diverse conclusions.

Challenges faced by school principal in their daily work The article presents the challenges faced by school principals as a result of the processes specific to the modern world, analyzed in the literature. In this context, the most problematic issues in the daily work of school principals in Poland were presented. The research conducted by the Educational Research Institute indicates that from the perspective of the school principal the most problematic are administrative and legal issues, increasing bureaucratic requirements. Other problems identifi ed relate to the school staff and management of the school employees, school relations with the external environment, to a lesser extent, educational processes. Many of the described problems result from the demographic decline.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the problems related to conflicts which may happen in schools or other educational circumstances between educator and young people. The author of this article is looking for new solutions in a creative way, using some rules from his personal work experience with pupils in schools. He stresses that in order to be able to overcome difficulties with students, teachers have to be aware of five stages of feelings: anger, refusal, afterthought, reconciliation and renewal. The analysis of the obtained empirical data made it possible to introduce the conclusions concerning teacher’s attitude towards pupils who are in conflict with them. On the basis of research justifiable is a statement that teachers need to have special skills such as predisposition to retrospect and reconcile in order to restore new vital relationship with young people.

School culture is one of the indicators of school quality. Effective school leaders are continually working on changing the school, analyzing and examining why their school needs to become a better place for all students and employees. To change school culture it is very important to determine at what level it is, what elements representing it are satisfactory, and which elements are essential to be changed with the goal of improving them. The aim of this study was to determine indicators of school culture in primary schools and on this basis to determine its level. Indicators of school culture were viewed from the point of view of 562 teachers, assistants and other staff in primary schools. Through factor analysis seven indicators of school culture were distinguished in primary schools: encouraging joint work, evaluating employee achievement, teacher collegiality, principal-teacher feedback, learning partnership, colleagues’ compliments and personal involvement of teachers.

The article presents changes in perception of some aspects of psychosocial school environment of students in 1990–2010 and a comparison of some indicators for Polish students and average for 34–41 countries from HBSC network (Health Behaviour in School-aged Children. A WHO Collaborative Cross-national Study). Data from the international HBSC surveys on health behaviour of school children, carried out every 4 years were analysed. The HBSC standard questionnaire was used. Representative samples consist of students aged 11, 13, 15 years. About 60% of students liked school; 14% didn’t like it at all; 37–63% felt pressured by schoolwork; 50% agreed that their classmates were kind and helpful. Analysed indicators were less positive in Poland than the average for countries in HBSC network and different trends of some indicators were found. Between 2002–2010 (after a structural reform of the education system) disadvantageous changes were evident. Students’ perception concerning different aspects of school functioning and its environment should be taken into consideration in planning educational policy.

Student school engagement is a multi-dimensional meta-construct describing identification and sense of belonging with school environment, an acceptance of the goals of schooling and students’ mental investment of physical and psychical energy into academic work and school life. The study aims to investigate the main predictors of student school engagement in the area of pupils’ school functioning. The participants were 291 secondary school children aged between 12 and 15 years. A stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that the most important predictors of student school engagement are the time spent learning, subjective declaration about school performance, school type (private Catholic school), and quality of family and peer relations. Those variables explain 20% of the variance in the Global Student School Engagement level.

Research objectives: The aim of this article is to investigate and analyse spirituality and religiousness in secondary school students of a public and a Catholic school. Research methods: The diagnostic survey method with a questionnaire was applied in the empirical research. The empirical data was collected with the authors’ original questionnaire on spirituality and religiousness of youth, based on publications by Janusz Mariański and Halina Mielicka. The following statistical methods were used to analyse the research material: Student’s t-test, chi2 correlation test, Fisher’s exact test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey’s post hoc test and Fisher’s linear trend test. A p-level of <0.05 was considered statistically significant and a p-level of <0.01 was considered highly significant. Structure of the article: The spirituality and religiousness of young people is an important issue in school education. Therefore, the article discusses, with reference to the literature on the subject, the basic concepts of spirituality and religiousness. The status of the existing research is shown. The methodological assumptions of our own research are discussed, as well as the characteristics of the study group with respect to the division into a public and a Catholic school. The results and statistical analysis, as well as the limitations of the research, are presented. Finally, general conclusions from the research are presented. Research results: The research was conducted in 2023. A total of 555 secondary school students participated in the study, including 341 (61.44%) from a Catholic school and 214 (38.56%) from a public school in Krakow. There were more females (58.74%) than males (41.26%) in the study group. Most of the young people (54.95%) declared that they are believers, and most of the believers (85.41%) declared that they are Catholic. The results on the spirituality scale differed significantly (p<0.05) between the groups; they were higher among the Catholic school students. Similarly, scores on the religiousness scale were highly significantly different (p<0.01) between the groups and higher in the Catholic school. Conclusions and recommendations: Based on the study significant relationships were observed between the type of school and the level of spirituality and religiousness, as well as between the declaration of faith and the level of spirituality and religiousness. The results of the research indicate that spirituality and religiousness are related to each other. Undoubtedly, attending a religious school can be a valuable contribution to developing the religious/spiritual sphere in a young person. It would be worthwhile to conduct further, detailed research on adolescents’ religiousness and spirituality in future in order to better understand and describe this issue.

The objective of the study was to assess the status of physical education at different levels of school education in rural and urban areas of Przemyśl County. The study included physical education teachers working in primary, middle and high schools. The analysis showed that most of the schools in the city have better conditions for the implementation of obligatory physical education classes. In addition, most teachers complain about conditions in schools. According to physical education teachers, combined classes, lack of equipment and appropriate sports base are the most common causes of making it impossible for them to accomplish the program of physical education in schools in the Przemyśl County.
Celem badań była ocena stanu wychowania fizycznego na różnych poziomach edukacji szkolnej na terenach wiejskich i miejskich powiatu przemyskiego. Badaniami (kwestionariusz ankiety) objęto nauczycieli wychowania fizycznego pracujących w szkołach podstawowych, gimnazjalnych i ponadgimnazjalnych. Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała, iż lepsze warunki do realizacji obowiązkowych zajęć wychowania fizycznego posiada większość szkół znajdujących się w mieście. Dodatkowo można stwierdzić, że większość nauczycieli narzeka na warunki panujące w szkołach. Według nauczycieli wychowania fizycznego łączenie klas, brak sprzętu i brak odpowiedniej bazy to najczęstsze przyczyny uniemożliwiające realizacje programu.

The paper presents three possible 'futures' and 6 scenarios for schools that are elaborated in the OECD report published as a book entitled What Schools for the Future? in 2001 and its sequel in 2003 Networks of Innovation. Towards New Models for Managing Schools and Systems. These different visions are compared and archetypes of the types of leaders that each of them might require are proposed. The implications for developing such managers to meet the demands of varying future scenarios are then considered. Sense of school belonging is related to school/classroom social membership. Students’ sense of school belonging depends on teachers, classmates and parents, and arises from a positive interpersonal relationship based on care and support, which contributes to students’ sense of community. The scientific problem analysed in the article is defined by the following question: which fac- tors of school educational environment are significant for the sense of school belonging and social membership to arise? The databases of tests, student and school questionnaires of the OECD PISA worldwide study were used for the survey. 4618 students aged 15 from 216 general and vocational schools of Lithuania participated in the survey. Analysis of data showed that some factors of school educational environment have a positive, while other ones-negative relation to the sense of school belonging.

The article is an attempt to create a new category in the study of the school, which is school political culture. Theoretical meta-analysis was used. In the first part, the author explains why she asks about school political culture. Based on the assumption that the school is an organisation, it justifies applying the tools of political culture to its study. The school as an organisation is a separate system of activity, with clearly defined goals, a specific division of labour among members of the school community and connectivity between elements with a certain degree of formalisation and hierarchy of power. A comparison of elements of the school’s organisation with the basic elements of the political system is presented. The second part introduces the criteria that the theory of political culture should meet to become a theory that can be applied in school space. A meta-analysis of selected concepts of political culture: Gabriel Almond, Vilfredo Pareto and Zbigniew Blok (based on the developed criteria) allowed the selection of a leading theory. The results of meta-analysis are the subject of the third part of the article. The initial adaptation of the selected theory leading to the school specificity is a contribution to further scientific work on the development of a research tool allowing the classification of school political culture: of individual students, as well as the one dominating in the group.

W artykule przyjęto założenie, iż zmiana codziennej praktyki szkolnej zorientowanej na wzrost uczniowskich osiągnięć może zaistnieć jedynie poprzez zmianę kultury szkolnej. Przywoływane zostały wnioski badań, które zostały opracowane przez zespoły z grupy państw o bardzo zróżnicowanym profilu edukacyjnym lub uwzględniające specyfikę procesów doskonalenia w różnych kontekstach międzynarodowych. Choć w opracowaniu uwzględniono dwie grupy czynników, wewnątrzszkolnych i zewnętrznych (kontekstowych), to jednak ujęcie tematu w centrum analiz postawiło rolę i znaczenie kultury szkoły w grupie czynników wewnątrzszkolnych, istotnych w procesie wspierania jakości i efektywności szkoły.
It was assumed in the article that the change of everyday school practice oriented at the growth of pupils' achievements is only possible through changing school culture. There are references to research conclusions which were elaborated by teams from a group of countries with very diversified educational profiles or taking into account the specificity of improvement processes in various international contexts. Even though the study incorporates two groups of internal and external (contextual) factors, the role and importance of school culture within the group of internal factors was given priority in the process of reinforcement of school quality and efficiency.

Hungarian educational policy took a sharp turn in 2010, after the change of regime. The study analyses how pupil/parent preferences and enrolment chances have changed since 2000 in secondary education. The core of the study are KIFIR databases. Their task is to conduct secondary admission processes and to register applications. We have also used the data of the national com- petence survey to investigate the relationships between social background and student performance. While the strong government policy prefers vocational training, students and parents tend to turn away from it. However, the chances to enter secondary school have decreased, thus reducing the chances to enter higher education.

Aim. The aim of the research is to determine what role management and schools play in the organisation of students” free time, and what activities it undertakes to educate for leisure time. Methods. This study used methods of theoretical analysis, survey research methods, and questionnaires, in which 1410 subjects such as principals, teachers, parents and students from 150 primary schools in Bosnia and Herzegowina (B&H) participated. Results. The results show that principals and teachers have positive attitudes about the rational use of students’ free time in order to prepare them  for continuing self-education with the use of various sources of knowledge. Conclusion. Conclusions show that for a better understanding of the role of school management it is necessary to do more research about this issue on the territory of B&H, because the proper organisation and implementation of students’ free time can be successful if all participants in education work together. Research restrictions. Since it is not possible to make comparison with results of the previous research on this topic on the territory of B&H,  the study compares results with results from other countries. Practical application. The practical goal is to examine the education and to increase the understanding and awareness of the free time of young people. Originality. This study is original and creative, and it contributes to better understanding of the role of management in leisure activities on students’ emotional, social, cognitive and work competencies.

The paper presents the findings derived from the study on school principals in Poland. The study is guided by the following research questions: What requirements are addressed to candidates for the position of a school principal? Who are school principals? How does the structure of school principals look like? What tasks does the school principal have to perform? The basis of the research study is the review of the laws in force from September 1, 2018 in the field of education and accompanying executive regulations, as well as the analysis of data available in the database of the Educational Information System and the data of the Ministry of National Education. The findings inform about educational policy and practice and at the same time contribute to further research on the socio-professional status of school principals in Poland as well as on research on working conditions and the professionalization of school principal activities.

Opis:
In the current paper, the creation and development of the chemical school which as a completely new institution functioned since 1919 is presented. Despite the numerous transformations and under various names the school operated till the outbreak of the World War II. It was not only the new school but also relatively new military branch, which survived to the contemporary times. The established school had neither the tradition nor the history, however, by providing the services it managed to educate competent and professional commanders. Its educational system enabled the staff to train according to their positions or military specialties.

This article reviews Bolshevik policy in the field of school education in the early years of Soviet power. The author draws attention to the ideological and political differences between the party and most of the teachers, which intensified after the Bolsheviks seized power. The atmosphere of mutual distrust negatively affected the social policies concerning teachers at the local level. The terrible financial situation of the teachers led to a critical shortage of staff, a decrease in the overall competence of school employees, lack of motivation and capacity to effectively implement school reform. At the same time, the authorities significantly increased the requirements for teachers. Therefore, the Bolsheviks’ concept of the “labour school” was implemented with considerable distortions, causing a general decline in the quality of school education. Summing up the experience of school policy in the first years of the Soviet power, the Bolsheviks understood the need to review their attitude to people’s teachers and in particular to the remuneration of their labour.

Opis:
The article presents the results of analyses of the impact of the socioeconomic status (SES) of the student’s family on the selection processes at the threshold of upper secondary school. It was checked whether SES affects these processes only through the results of the lower secondary school examination or there is a direct impact of this factor. The data used came from the nationwide survey of upper secondary school students, which was a Polish extension of OECD’s PISA study. The results of path modeling prove that there is a direct impact of status factors on the selection processes and its strength is similar to the SES effect mediated by the results of the lower secondary school (gimnazjum) examination.

The article is an attempt to create a new category in the study of the school, which is school political culture. Theoretical meta-analysis was used. In the first part, the author explains why she asks about school political culture. Based on the assumption that the school is an organisation, it justifies applying the tools of political culture to its study. The school as an organisation is a separate system of activity, with clearly defined goals, a specific division of labour among members of the school community and connectivity between elements with a certain degree of formalisation and hierarchy of power. A comparison of elements of the school’s organisation with the basic elements of the political system is presented. The second part introduces the criteria that the theory of political culture should meet to become a theory that can be applied in school space. A meta-analysis of selected concepts of political culture: Gabriel Almond, Vilfredo Pareto and Zbigniew Blok (based on the developed criteria) allowed the selection of a leading theory. The results of meta-analysis are the subject of the third part of the article. The initial adaptation of the selected theory leading to the school specificity is a contribution to further scientific work on the development of a research tool allowing the classification of school political culture: of individual students, as well as the one dominating in the group.

The article introduces the Russian pedagogue Marina Aromshtam, whose contribution to modern, post-Soviet pedagogy gives her a special significance in contemporary science. Her activity at school has been illustrated by examples of two outstanding works Like a Diary. Teachers’ Stories and When Angels  Rest. The writer’s detailed biography helps to show in detail a number of changes and innovations which, thanks to her numerous articles and books, have influenced many people. Importantly, it has revived the practice of family reading, strongly involved parents in the education of their children, and has disseminated knowledge about the world among readers large and small. As a strong woman, she made significant changes in contemporary pedagogy and became a true patron of children’s education.

This study contains an analysis of school reality and refers to its perception by individuals directly engaged in it, namely the students (teachers’ perception has been excluded) who experience and face various situations occurring at school environment. The purpose of this project was to explore various aspects of school life from students’ perspective in actual and preferred terms. The research was carried out among 1,036 students of elementary school, from grade 4 to grade 7, and middle-school from grade 2 to grade 3. The research tool was TROFLEI questionnaire (Technology-Rich Outcomes-Focused Learning Environment Inventory). The study has enabled identification of those aspects of everyday school reality which are of utmost importance to the students. The results moreover revealed a gap between the actual and the preferred states for all characteristics between elementary school students and middle-school students. The study results suggest a change of teaching methods and styles in Polish school and rejection of the schematic approach to pay attention to students’ personal development and relationships between students themselves and between students and teachers. All that is a precondition for a friendly atmo[1]sphere at school and underpins a successful realization of its function.

  The teacher today works in close relationship with others, which forces him to accept a limited set of attitudes and ways of action. I assume for the purposes of this paper two groups of factors for the teacher modeling approach: external – pedagogical supervision and school-imposed regulations deriving from state teachers’ and society’s expectations, especially from parents and students themselves, the internal factors – the process of educating and teaching every teacher and crucial, long-term formation of conscience. The purpose of this article is to specify whether there is any influence of school practices towards mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics outcomes. The studies about the effect of school practice on student achievement have a long history both domestically and abroad. However, the investigation of how the social context of school and practices affect student performance is not clear, especially in mathematics. To investigate this, I will chose al-touri secondary school where I teach as a case-study for my research. The instrument use for the article will be based on a questionnaire, which contains 2 sections. Section 1 will contain “School Level Environment Questionnaire” (SLEQ). Section 2 will contain “Mathematic Self-efficacy Questionnaire” (MSEQ). The mathematic scores of students will be taken for the first and second semester to compare between them and to see if there is a significant relationship between school practices and mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics outcomes. The findings indicate that there is a significant difference in students’ perception about their school practice and mathematic self-efficacy based on their achievement and according to ANOVA test, there is a relationship between school practices and mathematic self-efficacy. The result from this study can be generalized to the population of all schools in the Arab Sectors in Israel. Moreover, we can use the questionnaires obtained in the study to identify the strengths and weaknesses of schools in their teaching and learning process and to focus on improving their latter, at the same time maintaining the strength of their teaching strategies.

Aim of the study: According to David H. Olson’s circumplex model of family systems, there are particular dimensions that form the basis for good adaptation and growth, namely flexibility, cohesion, communication and family life satisfaction. The study explores the connections between these dimensions of family functioning, socioeconomic status of the family and educational achievements (reading, writing and numeracy skills) of preschool and early school-age children. Method: The subjects were 105 children, aged 5–6, and 105 parents of these children from the Silesian region in Poland. The parents filled out Family Rating Scales – Skale Oceny Rodziny, SOR (Margasiński, 2009), i.e. the Polish adaptation of the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale known as FACES IV (Olson and Gorall, 2006), and demographic questions to assess the family’s socioeconomic status (SES). The children completed a computer-adaptive test of school ability at the start of school (Test Umiejętności na Starcie Szkolnym, TUNSS, Kaczan and Rycielski, 2014). Results: Multivariate structural equation modeling (SEM) was performed, confirming both SES and SOR to influence the children’s level of school skills at the start of school. The children’s age (expressed in months) presented as an important variable in the model. These factors explain 78% of variance of early school abilities. The number of books and mother’s education level were found to be the variables the most closely linked to school abilities amongst the SES factors. Children with a balanced family system background reached better scores in school abilities than children from unbalanced family systems.
Cel: Zgodnie z kołowym modelem funkcjonowania rodziny Davida H. Olsona istnieją szczególne wymiary, które tworzą bazę dla dobrej adaptacji i właściwego rozwoju dziecka: elastyczność, spójność, komunikacja i zadowolenie z życia rodzinnego. Prezentowane badania koncentrują się na powiązaniach między tymi wymiarami funkcjonowania rodziny i jej statusem socjoekonomicznym a umiejętnościami szkolnymi (czytanie, pisanie, matematyka) dzieci przedszkolnych i wczesnoszkolnych. Metoda: Badaniem objęto 105 dzieci w wieku 5 i 6 lat z województwa śląskiego oraz 105 rodziców tych dzieci. Rodzice wypełniali Skale Oceny Rodziny – SOR (Margasiński, 2009), które są polską adaptacją narzędzia FACES IV (Olson i Gorall, 2006), i metryczkę określającą poziom socjoekonomiczny rodziny (socioeconomic status, SES). Dzieci poddano badaniu adaptacyjnym Testem Umiejętności na Starcie Szkolnym – TUNSS (Kaczan i Rycielski, 2014). Wyniki: Analiza przeprowadzona z zastosowaniem modelowania strukturalnego wskazała, iż zmienne SOR i SES wpływają na poziom umiejętności szkolnych dzieci przedszkolnych i wczesnoszkolnych; ważnym czynnikiem okazał się przy tym wiek dzieci (różnice w miesiącach). Zaproponowany model tłumaczy 78% zmienności wyników w zakresie umiejętności szkolnych. Wśród czynników SES zmienną najbardziej związaną z umiejętnościami szkolnymi dzieci okazał się poziom edukacji matki. Dzieci z systemów rodzinnych o przewadze komponenty zrównoważenia uzyskiwały lepsze wyniki w zakresie umiejętności na starcie szkolnym niż dzieci z systemów o przewadze komponenty niezrównoważenia.

This paper focuses on the connection between the principal’s behaviors and job satisfaction among teachers. The study was conducted on a sample of 74 five middle school teachers. It was found that: (1) middle school teachers perceived their principals as supportive rather than restrictive, (2) teachers are satisfied with their job in middle schools, (3) the principal’s supportive and directive behavior was positively correlated with job satisfaction, (4) the principal’s restrictive behavior was found not significantly correlated with job satisfaction and finally (5) the principal’s directive behavior was a significant predictor of job satisfaction among middle schools teachers.

The proposed paper presents the results of a research study on the perceived organisational climate in Slovak vocational schools. The authors focus on the association between school openness and the quality of social relationships within institutions as perceived by teachers. The adapted version of the OCDQ-RS scale by Hoy, Tarter, and Kottkamp (1991) was used in the research. The results show that intimate teacher behaviour and positive relationships at work are important for the perceived organisational climate, which is an important finding for school leaders, especially in the context of the leadership style they apply.

In 2017, 46.5% of school buildings in Italy needed urgent maintenance regarding architectural usability and accessibility, but also concerning structural, energy and environmental aspects. 36% of the energy needs during the operational and management phase of the Italian school sector is required by secondary schools. The main objective of this paper is to propose an integrated (architectural, energy and environmental) redevelopment for the “Raffaello” School in Pistoia (Italy) aimed at improving the environmental and technological system and decreasing the building’s primary energy demand. Here, for the sake of brevity, we will only deal explicitly with energy rehabilitation. The results show that the replacement of the artificial lighting system with LED lamps alone leads to a 45% decrease in primary energy demand. Moreover, for the sake of completeness a cost-optimal analysis was performed referred to both heating and lighting system and technological solution for the external envelope. The cost-optimal analysis points out that the substitution of artificial lighting system is the upgrade measure that satisfy both economic and energy sustainability, confirming previous findings. Regarding external envelope redevelopment the more advantageous solution is the one with external insulation layer in wood fiber with aerated concrete blocks for load-bearing functional layer.

The aim of this research was to study the activity-related, personality-related and socio-communicative components of school teachers’ professional competence. The survey of 380 teachers using standardised questionnaires identified the manifestation specificities of the components, depending on the work in conventional or innovative schools and the length of work experience. Significant differences were found between teachers working in innovative and conventional schools. The length of work experience was found to condition the differences between the activity-related and the personality-related components. The results obtained showed that teachers in innovative schools focus on professional development and achieving independence and are optimistic and tolerant of uncertainty. Those from conventional schools tend to strive for stable working conditions and demonstrate high anxiety levels and rigidity.

Absencja szkolna stanowi problem, z którego skutkami konfrontowani są zarówno uczniowie, jak i ich rodzice lub opiekunowie prawni. Jest ona również wyzwaniem dla polskiego systemu oświaty oraz, już jako konsekwencja niepowodzeń szkolnych, dla instytucji polskiej polityki społecznej. Artykuł złożony jest z pięciu punktów. Zaprezentowano w nim rozumienie pojęcia absencja szkolna jako nadrzędnego w stosunku do różnych form nieobecności ucznia na lekcji i w trakcie innych obowiązkowych zajęć proponowanych przez szkołę. Zwrócono uwagę na specyficzną formę absencji, jaką stanowi nieobecność ucznia na lekcjach wychowania fizycznego. W artykule zaprezentowano wybrane akty prawne, które regulują wykonywanie obowiązku szkolnego przez rodziców względnie opiekunów prawnych oraz postępowanie w przypadku absencji ucznia w szkole. Zwrócono uwagę na fakt, że absencja szkolna może stanowić poważne zagrożenie dla równych szans życiowych dzieci i młodzieży.
School absence is a problem with the consequences of which both pupils and their parents or legal guardians are confronted. It is also a challenge for the Polish educational system and, as a consequence of school failures, for the institutions of Polish social policy. The article consists of five points. It presents the understanding of the school absence concept as superior to various forms of student absence during classes and other obligatory activities proposed by the school. Attention is paid to the specific form of absence, which is the student's absence during physical education classes. The article presents selected legal acts that regulate the performance of the school obligation by parents or legal guardians and the procedure in the event of student absence at school. Attention is paid to the fact that school absence can be a serious threat to equal opportunities for children and youth.

Artykuł poświęcony jest problematyce stresu szkolnego. W pierwszej części tekstu omówiono zagadnienia teoretyczne: najczęstsze sposoby definiowania i rozumienia stresu, jego przyczyny i skutki. Następnie scharakteryzowano stres szkolny, wskazując jego objawy, główne źródła i konsekwencje nadmiernego napięcia przeżywanego przez uczniów w szkole. Przedstawiono także założenia badań empirycznych, zrealizowanych metodą sondażu diagnostycznego w grupie 440 uczniów w wieku 12–14 lat, których celem było poznanie opinii uczniów na temat wybranych aspektów stresu szkolnego. W artykule zreferowano wyniki badań dotyczących problemu obecności i natężenia stresu szkolnego w codziennym doświadczeniu dzieci i młodzieży. Uzyskane dane wskazują, że badani przeżywają stres szkolny o różnej częstotliwości i poziomie natężenia. Najwięcej jest uczniów z przeciętnym i niskim poziomem stresu (ok. 40% dla każdego z tych poziomów), poziom wysoki dotyczy blisko 20% respondentów. Zarejestrowano wzrost odsetka uczniów z wysokim poziomem stresu w gimnazjach w porównaniu do szkół podstawowych, zauważono też, że nadmierne napięcie częściej dotyczy dziewcząt, które odczuwają stres bardziej intensywnie. Przedstawiono również deklarowane przez uczniów symptomy stresu w obszarach: fizjologicznym, emocjonalnym, poznawczym i behawioralnym. Na podstawie analizy uzyskanego materiału empirycznego podjęto próbę ich interpretacji i sformułowano wnioski praktyczne.
The article concerns the problem of school stress. In the first part, theoretical issues are discussed: the most common definitions and understanding of stress, its causes, and effects. School stress is then characterized: its symptoms and main sources are presented as well as the consequences of excessive strain felt by students at school. The assumptions of empirical research on school stress as viewed by students are also presented. The research was conducted through a diagnostic survey on a group of 440 students aged 12–14. The article presents the results of the research on the problem of stress and its intensity in students’ daily school life. The data obtained in the research shows that the students experienced stress with different frequency and intensity. Most of the students experienced average and low levels of stress (ca 40% for each level), and 20% of the students were under high levels of stress. An increased number of highly stressed students was observed in middle schools compared to primary schools. Also, it was noticed that more girls than boys suffered from intense tension. Symptoms of stress – physiological, emotional, empirical, and behavioral ones - declared by the students are also presented. Interpretation and conclusions are made based on the analysis of the empirical material.

The main intention of the conducted project was an attempt to bring closer a fragment of school daily life which covers the time of break between lessons and to recognise the meanings which are attributed by pupils to the school bell sound. The text presents results of my research, which illustrate the world of children’s meanings associated with the sound of the school bell – an inherent attribute of pupils’ daily life. What significance do they ascribe to the sound of the school bell? What does its sound really mean to them when it signals a beginning of another lesson and what when it starts a break? Such formulated questions specified the area of my empiric quests. These attempts of mine belong to the trend of research which on the one hand contributes to the fuller comprehension of childhood shown from the perspective of the very children, whereas on the other hand it may reveal senses and meanings which are given by children to the world that surrounds them.

The paper is founded on the distinction between traditional school represented by Johann F. Herbart and progressive school here represented by Bell Hooks. The main purpose of this article is to describe specific characteristics of these two educational models taking into account changes within them. Foucault’s disciplinary power schema provides methodological tools for better apprehension of the location of power in the classroom. In particular, the concept of exam mentioned by Foucault in his Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison has great importance for better understanding of changes within the two aforementioned educational models and student-teacher relations. It appears that power is a fundamental element in these relations, which is exemplified by the presence of the hidden curriculum and how it affects students. Conceiving teaching as a technical activity the autor argues that the way this power is performed depends on the teacher’s character, skills and will.

Due to the complexity of tasks, powers and responsibilities, an important issue for the efficiency and quality of schools and other educational institutions is the selection and preparation of the leaders of these institutions. In the post-transformation era in Poland legal empowerment and the tasks of the school principals were the subject of numerous modifications. The scope of responsibilities of school principals is correlated with the demands for candidates to these positions. Curriculum overview of postgraduate studies and courses in education management discloses a basic rather than a thorough level of substantive preparation of candidates for leadership positions. In selecting the adequate people for the nomination to these positions it is also proposed to consider the suitability of candidates for managerial and leadership roles in target institutions.

The subject-matter of the research presented in this article is the preparation of Polish preschool and early-school education for work with refugee children that have fallen victim to the war in Ukraine. The research is a review one, and the analysis of Polish and foreign literature relevant to the matters referred to in the title of the article is included in it. As the result of the conducted archive and library searches, it was ascertained that, hitherto, rather little research into this problem has been conducted in Poland (the reason for which fact is the absence of previous experiences with a minor being a war refugee), and also rich relevant experiences in the countries of the West, confirmed by the extensive literature of the subject. This article indicates the principal directions of research and activities – the problem of war trauma as experienced by a child, supporting the families of refugee children, and providing an ECEC teacher with competences required for the purpose of work with a child refugee afflicted by war. This article constitutes a sui generis prolegomena of research the objective of which is to prepare Polish ECEC teachers for facing the challenges connected with war in Ukraine and the presence of an Ukrainian child refugee in the Polish institutions of education.

Historically there have been inequities in access to school in South Africa. Differences in languages have also contributed to difficulties. In the present study a Grade One class was observed for a term as they entered formal schooling. Cultural psychology was used as the method, developing a description of the context and narrowing the observations to ten and then five children. Five school homes visits were done and one of these case studies is described here. Given the socio-economic literacy context, the child did extremely well, being self-motivated and supported by an aware single parent. The usefulness of the Cultural Psychological method is described.

Inclusive education can be considered a modern approach to the both general and special education. For providing the best conditions of getting a proper education for every student irrespective of their social status, gender, colour of skin, state of health, etc. it is essential to provide professional environment, support and assistance at schools for those who need it as well as create healthy educational environment in the students’ group. The problem is accomplished by the fact that not all students with special educational needs are recommended or able to visit public schools because of the extent of their disease. Therefore the role of special education here shouldn’t be abolished. So, the article is aimed to analyse the world scientific approaches to special and inclusive education and make a comparative characteristics of the three types of schools: special school, school with integrated study and inclusive school.

The submitted study addresses the weight of school bags as one of the risk factors of poor posture in pupils during mandatory school attendance. The research group included 680 children aged 6 to 14. The weight of the school bag was measured during one workweek from Monday to Friday. The results showed that many early school age pupils are overburdened with an inappropriate school bag weight. The weight of the empty school bag that exceeds the permitted weight according to the Czech national standard has a significant effect on the total weight of the school bag. Teachers should participate in the remedy of the situation. They should not only look for possible solutions, but also educate the parents of the pupils in this matter.

The presented study explored the memories of 332 pedagogy students about the bullying experiences and their former schools. Findings indicate that: (1) young adults have very different experiences with bullying, (2) time spent at middle school was assessed as the worst, (3) general judgment of school was correlated with bullying experiences, especially students who were involved in bullying problems as a victim or bystander were less positive in their appraisals of school. The study provides a unique account of how young adults view their school experiences. Data is discussed in terms of its psycho-educational implications.
