Opis:
The present article regards the specificity of the realization of the Polish theme in N. Leskov’s prose. This element of the Russian writer’s artistic world is represented in his writing of the 1860s-1880s. N. Leskov had a personal experience of Poland which he visited at the beginning of the 1860s. Most vividly Polish thematics is represented in the novel Nowhere (1864), as well as in the stories and articles of his last years: Russian Democrat in Poland (1880), Interesting Men (1885), etc.The realization of the Polish motif in N. Leskov’s prose is, on the one hand, traditional for Russian literature, depicting international phenomena and topos of different cultures as „other” which are seldom perceived as foreign and hostile. The individuality of N. Leskov is manifested in the fact that his version of depicting Poland and Polish is opposed to the official state imperial position according to which Poland was regarded as a permanent source of danger. This stereotype is destroyed in N. Leskov’s prose.

The author of the article analyses “Polish” pages of Daniel Stein, the translator, one of themost disputable novels written by Ulitskaya. Complicated life of frontier (eastern and western) Polish lands shown through life stories of the characters is dealt with. The subjective images ofPoland which appear in consciousness of the heroes are of the utmost importance for understandingthe ideology of the novel. In general the image of Poland in L.Ulitskaya’s novel is connectedwith semantics of losses, and the break of characters’ real connections with their homeland can beunderstood as the evidence of trouble, disintegration of integrity.

The article examines the notion of bovarism which can be seen in the work of the most outstanding Russian writers of the second half of the 19th century, for example Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Anton Chekhov. It seems that the source of bovaristic attitude, which is culturally, socially and psychologically motivated, is the extremity of the Russian character prone to self-sacrifice, offering and suffering, as well as cruelty and sadism. A Russian variant of bovarism is boredom and melancholy.

Opis:
The tragedy Borys Godunov should be admitted to be a picture of an essential culture space. The drama represents generally accepted stereotypes and patterns refering to the Polish nation, however it pays attention to diversity of meaning of Pushkin’s attitude towards Poland. The poet contrasted in the work culture and customs of both nations, he chose heroes, whose names and behaviour evoked readers’ doubts and associations with the biography of Pushkin. Characters of the drama are among others: the fictitious son of Andrzej Kurbski - the Kazakh hero, the nobleman Sobański - in all probability related to the emissary Karolina Sobańska, mysterious and susceptible of various interpretations Piotr Łukicz Chruszczow. Present Pushkin’s texts researches confirmed, that impossible is univocal defining the poet’s mutual relations to Poland and the Polish. Pushkin’s views on the Polish matter differed from his personal connections with Mickiewicz’s compatriots, but, probably, he had the invariable and finally specified opinion on the real weight of the Republic of Poland’s culture and its meaning for Russia and Western Europe.

The voice of the heart should be the guide in resolving moral problems. This voice is the gift of God and as such it can be usually trusted. Thus, morality is based on theology. Murav’ev’s theology presents a grand vision of providential God who appears to be viewed from the unitarian perspective.

The aim of the article is to review Victor Pelevin’s works in terms of their critique of current social and political processes as well as various kinds of ideologies and theories. Despite the writer’s association with the group of postmodern artists he is not only focused on typically postmodern text games and playing with readers, his ambitions are also targeted at shaping their views and behaviors. The author of Generation “P” reacts vividly to the changing reality, he is a keen observer with ambitions to influence the world. He raises issues of universal nature, protesting against all ideological norms, social categories, standardizing fashions and stereotypes that enslave human beings, against all ways of manipulating human consciousness. His approach is constantly met with criticism of both pro-Western and traditionalist circles. The former accuse him of an overly skeptical attitude to the Western model of life, while the latter do not like the writer’s ironic approach to social reality, polemics with Russian values and attempts to discredit them.

In 1921-1923 Berlin was a centre of Russian emigration. Many poets and writers from Russia, like Maksim Gorki, Aleksy Remizow, Andriej Bieły, Ilja Erenburg, Aleksy Tołstoj, Władysław Chodasiewicz, Borys Pasternak, and for a short time also Marina Cwietajewa and Siergiej Jesienin, connected their life with this city. It was just in Berlin where was working one of the most interesting and the most intriguing writer of XX century (1922-1937) - Vladimir Nabokov. These period was characterized for him not only by happy moments (first love, marriage, birth of son), but also by tragic ones (death offather). His stay in Berlin marked out really important stage in creativity of Nabokov. It was theplace of his debut in the pages of Berlin’s newspaper “Руль” in 1921, in which he published his first poems under the pseudonym Sirin. In Berlin Nabokov wrote his first story and first novel. Itwas where he achieved his fame and formed his unique style of writing. Nabokov’s emigrant prose from 20’s constitutes an extraordinary guidebook to Berlin. In his art pieces he recreated the topography of Berlin by using architectural codes. Most often he related the code of home to a closed, domestic and peaceful circle. It is a circle tight in the meaning of space, but profound in the meaning of sensations. The lack of real home was a reason to lookingfor surrogate and it effected disorientation in the world in which poet had no place. The city hasa role of open, then foreign and hostile space. Here for the most part we can see the code in the shape of street or houses in city. This kind of code used by Nabokov, but also by other emigrantpoets, creates a feeling of disharmony, artificiality and unnaturalness.

The author’s of Resurrection letters to different addressees, as well as about 60 thousand letters to the Russian writer from all over the world are kept in the Department of Manuscript Works of the National Museum of Count Leo Tolstoy in Moscow. Indeed, it is a real mine of knowledge of the writer’s contemporary Russia and the world of those days. The author of this publication pays particular attention to the letters of correspondents in Slavonic countries who subjected Slavonic glorious ideals of freedom, union and brotherhood to a penetrating analysis in view of a peaceful community of people of different nationalities, races and cultures. Such were the letters to Count Leo Tolstoy of 6th July 1909 by All-Slavonic Association „Slavia”, as well as the letters of 11th June 1910 by a revived Polish Fellowship Association — reverting to noble as well as tragic Arian history in the Poland of Reformation, signed by Marian Tadeusz Lubecki, Jozef Ostka, Stefan Baraniecki, Stanisław Parczyński, Kazimierz Piątka, Amelia Poznańska and many others. The Russian writer was applied to with many various requests (e.g. Osip Vysoky of Czech in the matter of rendering; Andża Mita Petrovic of Belgrade in the concern of Bosnia-Herzegovina annexation by Austria; Marian Zdziechowski of Cracow in the issue of tolstoizm as a religious-ethical doctrine; Jan Niecisław Ignacy Baudouin and Jan Styka in the question of death penalty). Tolstoy’s confidant in European and Slavonic matters was a Slovakian doctor and philosopher, Dusan Makovicky, living in Yasna Polyana, the author of a masterpiece — The Yasna Polyana Record (1904—1910). Count Leo Tolstoy would consequently answer the rankling the Slavonic society questions in harmony with his rationalistic doctrine, called tolstoizm. According to the writer’s sound belief God is love and through Jesus Christ shares with His love with people. A full union with God — it is the union in the truth, love and peace. A man who chooses love is soaked through with endless kind-heartedness. The main feature of Tolstoy was a grave concern for the world’s doom. A Christian should be totally deprived of hate and the feeling of revenge; love, forgiveness, compassion, fight against evil through spreading kindliness and noble feelings should be the trails of the religion based on the life and teachings of Christ, in agreement with the principle: who lives with God, chooses love. The love of fellow being was seen and felt by the writer as a significant value which ought to be learnt and contributed to incessantly. The writer as an architect and director of purified of Christianity alien layers and a moral philosopher constantly supported kindliness and condemned evil, spreading out the space of hope and love through his obedience to peace and evangelical source of Christianity, which was perspicaciously expressed in the letter to Stefania Laudyn-Chrzanowska, in a form of a voluminous article — A Reply to a Polish Woman (One of Many).

Tolstoy, whose basic law of human life is the mutual love between people, completely rejects the meaningfulness of the penitentiary system.

Petersburg Text of Russian Literature

Opis:
Saint Petersburg – according to many, the most amazing and the only one of its kind city in the world, can be considered as a hero on many levels. One of them concerns the honorary title “Hero City” awarded to Leningrad for the outstanding heroism of its citizens during World War II , while the second is assigned to the city perceived as a literary hero. In agreement with the concept of the Petersburg Text of Russian Literature developed by V. Toporov, Saint Petersburg exclusively deserves to be identified as the city having its own, text written by a number of authors embodied in literature. The study concerning the contemporary variant of the Petersburg Text was somehow limited by the leading representative of Tartu-Moscow Semiotic School himself, who basically referred to the writings relating to the city of Saint Petersburg, starting with the images depicted in literary-canonical texts by A. Pushkin and N. Gogol and recognizing A. Blok and K. Vaginov as the topic-closing writers. Since then it could only be seen as the so-called “Leningrad Text” phenomenon. However, analyzing a number of exemplars constituting the entire Petersburg literary corpus, one could come to the conclusion that Toporov’s theories need to be reviewed in order to be consistent with contemporary Russian prose. Consequently, present-day authors not only demonstrate their deep attraction and admiration of Saint Petersburg, but also openly refer to its history, expand the environmental topics, uncover the emotional attachment to their homeland, expose their interest to urban myths, legends and traditions, or display solid relations to Petersburg literature heritage, which absolutely proves that Russian culture is constantly the literature-centered one. The study also shows that a noticeable relation to the traditional Petersburg Text can be observed in many of the latest works of prose which, again, proves the infiniteness of the entire concept.

The author pays special attention to the influence of orthodox religion on the development of feminism in Russia as well as to the specific view of the role of woman and man in the society resulting from Russian culture. Religious and cultural impact over the specific character of Russian feminism is connected with the fact that in Russia a greater emphasis is placed on gender and not on sex. Therefore, the author believes that feminism in Russia has stimulated creativity of women in different fields of art and especially in literature.

Opis:
Many researchers of Lyudmila Petrushevskaya’s works draw attention to the irony which is the significant element of her prose, drama and poetry. It is important that the ironic principle manifests itself not only as an artistic technique but also as a philosophical aspect. Irony demonstrates the ambivalence of reality. On the one hand, it ridicules and profanes everything. On the other hand, irony gives the certitude of the ontological status of reality. We can see a good example of this function of irony in the novel Nas ukrali. Istoriya prestupleniy (2017). This novel shows the common features of Petrushevskaya’s works – the unity of ironic potential and language. In this case, language is not only the style but first of all the ontological element. This is why the language becomes almost a character in Petrushevskaya’s novel. Irony opens the vital potential of the linguistic personality. As a result, one of the heroes imitates foreign speech but doesn’t speak a foreign language. Irony also helps to reveal the ambivalent nature of life. It shows that our “umora” in Sanskrit and in ancient Indian is “humour” and “death”. So, the game and profanity not only reduce the status of the hero, the image, or the reader’s expectations but, first of all, fill the gap between words, ideas, feelings, and people.

In the study of symbolic behaviour, one of the most confusing questions is that of the relationship between game and ritual. Fluid boundaries between them and lack of clear idea of the nature of these phenomena have often lead to a widening of the scope of the concepts: “game” has been thought to include ritual behaviours, and the other way round.

The article discusses the conception of pravednik (the pious one) in the literary output of two Russian writers - Nicolay Leskov (1831-1895) and Ivan Shmelev (1873-1950). It is an attempt at presenting literary characters of „righteous men” reflected in the literary practice of the above-mentioned writers which takes into account the following categories: social background, occupation, appearance, clothes, life style, and moral and religious outlook. Based on the chosen literary examples, the author comes to a conclusion that the type of the pious character in which she is interested shares a lot of common features in the literary output of both Leskov and Shmelev. Apart from this, it is characterized by the dynamics of created heroes. At first, the evolution of the characters was affected by social and historical conditions, and later by religious and spiritual ones.

Mnishek is the most complex and controversial personality. Another feature of her poetry was identification with her female characters and creation of imaginary, usually ideal life attitudes.

The article is dedicated to an analysis of female character from Russian story of the 30-ties of 20th Century on the basis of Wanda Dąbrowska’s example. She is playing a role of protagonist and cooperator of Russian revolutionist - Walentyn, and - on the other hand - she is an important factor, which is inspired main Hero to thinking about the human fate in history and the meaning of revolutionary activity. In this way the Reader receives a double imagine of Woman, who are representing another nationality. This double imagine is a consequence of Wanda’s character creation in the narrative strate by the main Hero - another fictional character, which is also an alter ego of the Writer, and - in the same time - by the Writer himself, who decided to set this story in the Belarussian reality from First World War and „bolshevik resolution’s” period, which are familiar to an author from his own experience. The phenomenon of different nationality of the main Heros, and than - the problem of culture dialogue, qualicifying this story to the wide and still popular stream of describing the imagine of a „Stranger” in the literature. This analysis proposes an interpretation of main female character’s plot on the basis of the Emanuel Levinas’ concept of recognizing Other (a part of the philosophy of dialogue, which is characteristic stream for the first half of 20 Century), enriched by the some features of well-known sociological categories like e.g. „familiar Stranger” or „a Stranger at the familiar place”.

The coronation of Marina awakened fears of Russians and hope on the part of the Polish since this could enable to gain control over Russia. Many playwrights make a mention of this important event, but not always is it the base for construction of their plays. The purpose of this paper is to show the plays in which plays the motif of Dimitri and Marina is essential, and, without which the architectonics of the plays would be disrupted, this motive appeared there only due to the political and historic role it played.

Russian fantasy literature
Opis:
The present paper aims at analyzing one of the most recent Divov’s stories entitled (2016). The text is interesting both due to its literary genre hybridity (it embraces elements of a melodrama, a horror story, a detective story, urban fantasy and a fairy tale) and the topics it touches upon (especially animalistic issues). Divov deploys the well-known literary and cinematic motif of a soul penetrating an object and creates a story of motorcycle haunted by a dog’s soul. Due to its original solutions (inter alia referring to films) Divov’s story is an interesting work illustrating the permanent interrelations between literatures and movies as well as the author’s exploration within this scope. Moreover, the manner of creating the animal character and placing it within the structure allow for including Divov’s story into the group of contemporary literary works reflecting the proanimal trends in Russian culture.

This paper is a short history of presentation of Russian emigrant literature in Polish textbookssince the 1970s. The author emphasizes that even in the period of Marxist views the best specialistson the subject tried to overcome the pressure of the dominant ideology and to give a completethough necessarily brief analysis of the most important writers of the „first wave” of Russianemigration. In the 1990s starts the process of „rediscovery” of many unknown names in the „thirdwave” of Russian emigrant literature which have also found their way into the textbooks. Theauthor believes that the ever increasing development of scientific research in the field will result inthe appearance of a new Polish textbook which will be able to fully satisfy the students’ needs.

On the one hand, Sergey Arno’s prose stands out due to its black humour, full of paradoxical thoughts and absurd imaginations, but on the other hand, it deals with the condition of literature, its function, value, and literary criticism (i.e. its assessment). Apart from addressing literary subjects, his works relatively often reveal autobiographical and self-referential elements. For this reason, it is possible to extract from Arno’s texts fragments investigating the value of literature and its assessment that can be identified with the author’s own position. This article is an attempt to reconstruct the writer’s views based on four of his works in prose: three fictional pieces and one non-fiction book.
Prozę Siergieja Arno wyróżnia z jednej strony pełen paradoksalnych myśli oraz absurdalnych wyobrażeń czarny humor, z drugiej zaś strony stosunkowo ważne miejsce zajmują w niej odniesienia do kondycji literatury, jej funkcji, wartości, a także do krytyki literackiej (tj. wartościowania). Ponieważ twórczość prozaika, obok literaturotematycznych, stosunkowo często wykazuje też cechy autobiograficzne i autotematyczne, z niektórych  tekstów Arno daje się wydobyć fragmenty dotyczące wartości i wartościowania literatury, które można utożsamić ze stanowiskiem samego autora. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę takiej rekonstrukcji poglądów pisarza w oparciu o cztery utwory prozatorskie: trzy fikcjonalne oraz jeden faktograficzny.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to attempt to prove that the prose of one of the most distinguished representatives of „the third wave” of Russian emigration, Vladimir Maksimov, is based on Christian philosophy. Christian philosophy is a philosophy of love. Maksimov’s characters on their way towards God and faith are almost usually led there by the selfless love of their fellow creatures. The main message of the writer’s works is the Christian concept according to which God exists in every human being. Therefore, Maksimov’s novels contain numerous examples of goodness and human mercy, thanks to which the characters discover a divine element in themselves, and then their lives gain a new, deeper dimension. The regaining of faith in another human being is, according to Vladimir Maksimov, the first step to the regaining of faith in God. The author of Seven Days of Creation saw the hope of overcoming the sin of totalitarianism in the return of the Russian nation to faith. In the writer’s understanding, totalitarianism was evil, because it denied the existence of God and destroyed the individual by depriving it of the possibility to relate to the Transcendence. Numerous biblical references confirm the Christian concept of the world and humanity in Maksimov’s works. The key to the understanding of Maksimov’s prose lies in the teachings of Christ, the deep sense of which has been enclosed in the mystery of the Resurrection.

The author examines Nemzer’s critical discourse in order to reveal his unjustified pride and confidence in the area of literary criticism. The paper presents opinions of other Russian modern critics whose activity is aimed at improving the condition of the domestic literature rather than depreciating it as Nemzer does. The analysis of Nemzer’s texts proves that his criticism within the last decades has gone into the direction of a negative critique of Russian modern literature and thus discouraging young talented writers in Russia.

The creative principles and techniques of Anton Chekhov have proved attractive to modern writers. Many late-20th-century authors, e.g. Tendryakov or Sasha Sokolov, used the naiveté and naturalness of a child’s mind when depicting contradictions and controversial issues. A connection with Chekhov is evident in the development of the theme of a mental institution, its doctors and patients (Makanin, Pelevin). Also the Chekhovian principle of refusal to categorically judge the words and deeds of the characters gains fundamental importance (Dovlatov). It is from Chekhov that modern writers have learnt to present serious psychological issues and world-view questions through commonplace imagery.

Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski and his Russian colleague Sergey Lukyanenko are considered to be two best-known living science-fiction and fantasy authors from their countries at the turn of the century. What is more, their popularity is not only connected with their homeland, but also spreads to other countries. As we can observe, Lukyanenko is the most important living Russian modern SF&F author in Poland, whereas Sapkowski is one of the best-known Polish contemporary writers in Russia (not only SF&F, but in general - right after Lem and Chmielewska). It is interesting to take a close look at their popularity and reveal how their works connect and influence many different branches of culture in Poland and Russia. It is impossible to take into consideration all of their works, so we concentrate on Sapkowski’s The Witcher saga and Lukyanenko’s four urban fantasy novels about The Night Watch and The Day Watch. On this basis we present their influence on such cultural areas as film, comic books and computer games. We also describe the reception of this influence and its results in Poland and Russia.

Since the first years before the post-revolutionary emigration („the first wave”), the problem of the special assignment given by history appeared. Authors of the emigration literature understood its mission differently, however, they did agree on this one point: the principle of artistic freedom is the underlying reason for the emigrants’ literature. Alluding to Nina Berberowa’s wellknown formula, it is not about exile, but about the mission. Spiritual values of the „mission” of the Russian diaspora are becoming a part of the national culture in contemporary times.

Opis:
The article deals with the problems of dialogue of cultures and ideas in prose pieces by Ivan Rukavishnikov (1877–1930), a Russian poet of the Silver Age, writer, cultural activist and translator. Rukavishnikov’s works are characterized by ideological and aesthetic tendencies typical of the Russian culture at the turn of the 20th century. In contemporary research parallels have been drawn between the prose of Rukavishnikov and that of Fyodor Dostoyevski, Fyodor Sologub, Valery Bryusov, Andrei Bely, Mikhail Albov and Vladimir Nabokov, among others. Rukavishnikov’s early verse is marked by the motifs of death, illness and loneliness. The majority of Rukavishnikov’s poems describe the poet’s feelings and emotions through images of weakness, disappointment, sorrow, suffering, fatigue and weariness, typical of the ‘lost generation’ poets. The same motifs are characteristic of his prose. The autobiographical persona from the lyrical poetry has a correspondent in the novel “The Damned Family” – the autobiographical figure of Viktor Makarovich, an artist and a typical individualist, focused on his personal feelings. As the author’s “porte parole”, Makarovich discusses art topics with other characters in the novel, and sometimes with himself. These artistic and intellectual discussions reflect the essence of actual Silver Age literary polemics. In the article the author also analyzes Rukavishnikov’s interest in Hindu ideas and culture, expressing the human longing for truth and perfection (manifest in the second part of the collection “The Close and the Distant”). By referring to the ancient philosophy the writer raises universal and timeless questions. These questions do not belong only to the spiritual and physical world of Rukavishnikov as a representative of the Russian Silver Age, but remain topical nowadays as well.

Russian diplomat Georgy N. Michajlowskij’s personal notes recorded in the years 1914-1920, and published in two volumes in 1993 in the series: Russia in Diplomats’ Memories, have been the main base to write this article. Being a worker of state ap-paratus of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Pievcheskij Bridge in Petersburg, Michajlowskij took part in a hard activity of the Russian diplomacy during the very hot events of the World War I and revolution times. He witnessed the fall of tcharism, short period of the Provisional Government’s govern, but after Bolshevik upheaval on October 7, 1917 he faced the very full of tension weeks when his department was taken over by Lev Trockij and communist commissars. He obviously was forced to leave the Office. Having joined the White Guard movement in 1917, he worked during the next three years’ time as a diplomat at Gen. Anton lvanovich Denikin in Rostov-on-Don and Taganrog as well at Gen. baron Pyotr Wrangel in Sevastopol. He participated in many White Guard diplomatic missions to Constantinople, Paris, London, Romę and Washington where he frequently met and cooperated with the last three Tsarist ministers of foreign affairs – Sergey Dmitriyevich Sazonov, Boris W. Sturmer, Nikolai M. Pokrovskij and then, among others, with Michail I. Tereszczenko, Pavel N. Milukov, Wasyl A. Maklakow and Peter B. Struwe who became the successors and leaders of the former Russia’s policy realised then by the Provisional Government and by the White Guard movement as well. So, he had the unique opportunity to describe almost all main figures of the Russian political and social drama which action was setting itself before his eyes. The artide is focusing on some Polish motifs, too. Generally, they are based on Michajlowskij’s writings which can be regarded as very interesting and valuable historical sources, relevant to the Polish question of the time, particularly when their author used to act on behalf of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in different commissions and committees that had been appointed to resolve the Polish question. One should pay the special attention to changeable attitudes towards the Polish question expressed by different Russian authorities.

The author of the paper, using tools developed by postcolonial researchers, discusses the works of twentieth-century Russian writers. The setting of these texts is in the territory of Central Asia, Siberia or the Caucasus, constituting one of the factors defining them as the so-called Eastern text of Russian literature. Although most of the writers come from the other parts of Russia and – in most cases – are of Slavic descent, they know these regions quite well. These writers, however, are little interested in the problems of indigenous peoples, as long as they are not related to nationwide issues such as industrialization, collectivization or the labour camp system. The issues of destruction and loss of cultural identity, subordination, enslavement and exploitation of the local population are often omitted. The main characters in the works of Russian writers are invariably Russians, and their reference point is the Russian (Soviet) state.

The analysis of the discussed novels leads to the conclusion, that age plays no significant role in depicting the above-mentioned relationship. Furthermore, regarding “youth” and “old age” as a pair of predicates, it confirms the thesis on continuous (either consciously or unconsciously) positive doctor- and negative patient-presentation.

Citationality and intertextual combining of the new ‘New Drama’ form a central device of contemporary dramatic arts. In his comedy How I Ate My Husband (2009) Bogaev takes citationality to extremes and lucidly demonstrates that not only the dramatis personae but also the playwright himself, the director, and the audience are subjected to the torrent of models and pretexts largely determining the action. The whole life has frozen as if it was one big quotation running through the canvas of the dramatic text on all levels and linking the fictional life within the play to real life, combining traditional concepts of theatre with the ideas of new drama. There is no place for coincidence, it turns out that all is one persistent recurrence.

Opis:
The paper aims at investigating the demonstration of Russian intuition in the contemporary Russian speculative fiction. The research thesis is that the Russians, both presented in literature and within the frames of the national character studies, manifest themselves as the intuitive introvert type according to Carl Gustav Jung’s classification. For validating the thesis, as far as the proposed literary works are concerned, one should use the instruments offered by cultural literary criticism along with the support of non-literary disciplines, such as intercultural communication and ethnopsychology. Moreover, one should consider also notes on Russian national character taken by Jung himself as well as studies on the sociocultural aspect of the analysed works. A wide range of methods and perspectives allows deep research of the “feeling – intuitive” Jungian scale as manifested within literary characters representing the Russian element (also called Russianness) in the selected works, which belong to the most significant and/or popular pieces of contemporary speculative fiction in Russia.

Opis:
Najnowsza proza rosyjska, wpisująca się w nieco szerzej ujmowaną literacką „współczesność”, daje wyraz powszechności problemów „pokoleniowych” zakorzenionych w ludzkich lękach, kłopotach tożsamościowych, zagubieniu i poczuciu samotności.
The newest Russian prose fiction, codified within more extensively labelled “contemporary” literature, expresses the universality of generational problems rooted in human fears, self-identity problems, numerous confusions and a sense of loneliness. The analysis of two novels by Egor Fetisov fitting into the concept of Petersburg text of Russian literature, shows their proximity to existential issues. The considerations reflected in the dialogues of the novels’ characters are ideologically oriented, with reference to such questions as the drama of choices to make, freedom and responsibility, a game of appearances, authenticity in life, as well as some distancing from “the imposed.” The central message of the novels concerns the “decision-making indisposition” seen as a kind of powerlessness experienced in the face of necessity to make a choice. The problem, constituting one of the key experiences of human subjectivity and typical of “present-day,” is often relativised in the discussed novels.

Visual poetical text came into existence as a connection of two types of activity - the poetical (verbal) one and the visual (graphic) one. It composes a varied phenomenon, which unites poetry, painting, graphic arts, fine arts and photography together. That dependence on each other was understood differently by particular artists in distinct periods of history. Russian literature also has its rich history of visual poetry. The first trials, which were started by Symeon of Polotsk in the 17th century, were continued by Gavrila Derzhavin, Alexei Apuchtin, Erl Martov, as well as others. This new and productive period of visual poetry was connected with the vanguard movement from the beginning of the 20th century, which spread across Europe. The biggest contribution into the development of this literary genre in Russia, not only in a practical matter, but also in a theoretic one, brought in futurists and constructivists, for whom the form became an essence, and a word became an image. The poetry of Vasily Kamensky (1884-1961) had a special place among different examples of experimental word-image Russian vanguard poetry. He is known as a Russian futurist, and a poem-experimenter. His poems prove that visual poetic graphic arts, can be recognized as a dominant force in the creating of and illustration of texts. This process can be done with a basic level of meaning in the writing and illustration of the text, however, this is purely linguistical.

This text presents Nadezhda Durova, the author of the first Russian autobiography, who, in male clothing, spent nine years as an officer in the Russian army. The special interest is paid to the introductory part in which Durova returns, after many years, to her diary notes from the period of the Napoleonic campaign, adding in a description of her own childhood. Apart from the commotion of the transgender theme, raised relatively often in relation to Durova, this description allows for a view into the world of women in Russia and Ukraine at the beginning of the 19th century, as well as a preliminary mapping of the differences between female figures in the masterpieces of the Russian literary canon (as written by men) and a personal narration, based on experiences in a woman’s world.

In each of three novels by Sasha Sokolov, the category of time plays a vital role. In A school for Fools, Between Dog and Wolf and Palisandriia, the writer consistently explores “the philosophy of time.” In this article, the analysis focuses on the work titled Between Dog and Wolf since it is a text in which Sokolov intensifies his creative strategy. The writer is interested in time as a philosophical category, as well as anthropological, artistic, cultural and existential ones. By placing the category of time in the space of a game, the author of A school for Fools creates hybrid, processual and heterogeneous space-time of elements that permeate and interact with one another. “Games with time” deconstruct binary oppositions, such as linearity — cyclicality, temporality — atemporality, finiteness — eternity. At the same time the richness of language games becomes a generator of ambiguity, which destroys any homogeneous closed systems when they get deprived of the stimulating “difference”.

Opis:
The paper concerns Russian contemporary politically engaged literature and takes into consideration the writings of an acclaimed Russian prose-writer, radical anti-Kremlin opposition activist – Zakhar Prilepin. A political turn in Russian contemporary literature is a way of raising an objection to the political authorities, who bring an incessant pressure on the society to reproduce the official public discourse. It is also the act of uniting particularities of aesthetics, existence and politics, as well as breaking with the vision of literature distanced from the public issues. The common ground for Russian writers’ political commitment is a resistance to the postmodernism paradigm connected with an attempt to define the conditions and mechanisms of new ideology (in the „new realism” current). Deeply political writings of Prilepin seem to be an anti-liberal and anti-individualistic rebellion, as well as a thorough critical study of Russian contemporary society. The revolutionary prose-writer is against the doctrine of cultural pluralism, the activities of neo-liberal ruling elite, the growing political authority of Russian middle class and the dominant vision of collective memory.

Opis:
The present study explores the ways of utilizing literature in political dispute, as defined by Bakhtin’s concept of speech genres exploited in secondary genres. The material includes Turgenev’s and Dostoyevsky’s novels and Yevgeny Chirikov’s family chronicle. The writers in question present politics in the anthropological sense of the term: as man’s relation to his social reality. The author attempts to determine which literary works were viewed as politically motivated and what functions they fulfilled in political disputes. The analysis reveals the following: literary works often served as a pretext to start a dispute, and in the dispute itself – as a means of defining the protagonists’ cultural and generational identity and values, as a rhetorical trick, as a source of social concepts and behaviours, as a catalyst for a revolutionary paradigm and, finally, as a means of discriminating against political opponents. On these grounds, the author is inclined to argue that Russian literature of the 19th century constituted a strong social communication component and provided ideological material for political discourse.

The article presents the figure of Karl Dedecius (1921–2016) by exploring his activity as a translator and ambassador of Polish – but also Russian – literature and culture in German-speaking countries (mainly Germany). Having spent his youth in pre-war multicultural Łódź and – after the outbreak of WW II – having been a prisoner of war in Soviet camps, in December 1949 Dedecius moved to the GDR, from where he fled three years later with his family to West Germany. For 25 years he had divided – his life between literary translation, notably poetry, work as an insurance agent and family matters, and after retiring he managed to set up the Deutsches Polen-Institut, a non-governmental institution devoted to the popularisation of Polish literature in Germany, which he led in the years 1980–1998. As one of his close collaborators states, Dedecius’s editorial legacy comprises about 200 books which he either translated, wrote or edited, with poetry translations and literary essays being the core of his literary activity. He rendered some 3,000 poems of roughly 300 Polish poets into German and composed ca. 10 books that present and analyse – chiefly the 20th-century – Polish literature; some of them also contain essays on translation, fragments of which are cited and commented in the present article. Another important source and basis of considerations is Dedecius’s autobiography Ein Europäer aus Lodz [A European from Łódź], which explains the background of the author’s life at its different stages.

The idea of Sophia – the personified Wisdom of God served as a symbol of independence and identity of the republic in the political culture of Novgorod the Great. In Old Russian chronicles and other narrative sources which can be connected with Novgorod, one may find statements showing that – in the eyes of the Novgorodians themselves – Wisdom was not only one of the main attributes of God, but also a separate character, a kind of divine being, who could be interpreted as patronesses and supernatural protector of the city-state. Construction of the temple of Hagia Sophia in Novgorod is usually dated to 1045–1050. In the source material one can find information that Novgorodian Sophia church was undoubtedly the most significant and important monument in the city. The theme of Wisdom of God is also a very prominent topic in Novgorodian historiography and literature. Moreover, the feminine personification of God’s Wisdom can also be found on the coins, emitted by the city-state from 1420.

Submissive to authorities psychiatry would be considered a great contributor to the novel’s plot. The text, which evidently car-ries out the objectives of literary fiction, by applying certain techniques is gaining the strength of realism, the absurdity becomes apparent and the world depicted appears more and more plausible.

It is attributed usually to Cyril of Turov (who died before 1182), one of the greatest writers of the Old Russian period. The oldest manuscript containing the full text of the Word of Wisdom is the parchment code from the thirteenth century, which is currently stored in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. A small fragment of the Word of Wisdom was also written on a birch bark document, found in its entirety in Torzhok near Novgorod the Great. This relic is usually dated to the years 1170-1190.

The article describes the recipes for the “witches’ ointment” quoted in the Russian literature of the 1st half of the 20th century. According to the European tradition dating back to the Middle Ages this drug enabled the worshippers of Satan to freely translocate (by air) to their covens with the aid of the powers of hell. Described are primarily the herbs, which, according to the characters of the Valery Bryusov’s novel The Fiery Angel, were to constitute the base of the concoction. The recipes given by Renata and one of the Agrippa von Nettesheim’s disciples slightly differ. There are, however, some components common to both of them. These include the henbane (Hyoscyamus niger, L.), the bittersweet (Solanum dulcamara, L.), the parsley, probably to be identified with the fool’s parsley (Aethusa cynapium, L.) or the hemlock (Conium maculatum, L.), and the wolf’s bane (one of the species of Aconitum, Helleborus foetidus, L. or Claviceps purpurea).

This paper focuses on the Russian and Polish receptions of the works of Roman Senchin, a leading representative of the New Realism Trend in Russian literature. The writer’s debut was his collection of short stories entitled Athens Nights (Афинские ночи), published in 2000. Since then, Senchin has written many works, including The Yeltyshevs (Елтышевы), published in 2009 and translated into several languages. His works are widely commented on, discussed, analyzed, and interpreted not only by Russian literary scholars, critics, and commentators of Russian cultural life, but also by Polish researchers investigating contemporary Russian literature. The article presents the views of literary critics and literary scholars concerning Senchin’s works, as well as reflections on their typical or dominant features. Despite widely differing points of view, Russian literary critics agree that Roman Senchin is the most pessimistic contemporary Russian writer.

The article analyzes three pieces of Russian, Ukrainian and Polish contemporary literature on the subject of “the death in Venice”. The authors of the works, by referring to the literary tradition, consciously strengthen the myth of the "the city of death". In their interpretations this myth has two dimensions: the general and the individual. In the general dimension the vision of a dying beauty and fading power encourages reflection on the transitory nature of civilization. The individual dimension is based on the sense of identification of a dying character with a "dying" city, i.e. Venice.

The aim of this paper is to depict significant parallels between the works  of Witold Gombrowicz and Viktor Pelevin within the scope of reinterpreting national myths. In their novels, Trans Atlantic and Buddha’s Little Finger, the writers seem to take account of substantial danger related to fixed, ossified forms of understanding the notions of nation and motherland. Despite visible differences in their styles both novelist stay alert to automatized relationship to any phenomenon and make attempts at provoking the reader to rethink their relationship to the abovementioned terms. The author of the present paper finds these issues crucial and very up-to-date in the post postmodern society and culture, in particular in light of the recent geopolitical changes.

The Old-Russian account about the siege of Constantinople by participants of the Fourth Crusade in 1204 has survived in several East Slavic historiographical texts and represents primarily an independent literary work. Certainly, the earliest of these texts is the Novgorod First Chronicle. It is an older edition preserved only in one copy – the so-called “Synodal manuscript”, which was written in the middle of the thirteenth century. At that time the story was written. Its author could have taken information about the events he described directly from eyewitnesses. His account of events is characterized by objectivity and credibility and constitutes a valuable resource for the study of the Fourth Crusade

Thanks to the applied method, the following thesis concerning the poet’s idiolect were formulated: 1) Boris Poplavsky’s poetic world is of a definitely substantive structure; 2) the most important role in the specification of the presented world is played by senses - visual impressions and colours; 3) the lyrical subject acts mainly as a reporter of current events; 4) the used adverbs reveal the poet’s inclination to “stretching” time and space; 5) high frequency of the “I” pronoun testifies significant egocentrism of Poplavsky’s. *

Opis:
The aim of this article is to analyze and interpret Vladislav Khodasevich’s poem Petersburg (Петербург, 1925), in which the poet evokes the image of the city during the war communism period from the distance of emigration. The poet presents the city in many dimensions: as a place of struggle for physical survival in an era of crisis caused by the Russian Civil War; as a space where high culture clashed with the barbarism of Bolshevism; and in an autobiographical key – as a time in which his own creative forces flourished. The cityscape is based on a series of antinomies: past – present, tradition – innovation, spirituality – materiality, sacrum – profanum, the real world – the surreal world, the culture of old Russia – the primitivism of new times. This allows us to look at the poem simultaneously from several perspectives: historical-literary (cultural life in St. Petersburg during the Civil War), biographical (the poet’s stay in the city in the years 1920–1922), intertextual (assignment of the poem to the Petersburg text) and metatextual/self-referential (Khodasevich’s aesthetic views).

The author analyses the interpreting techniques used by Adam Pomorski in his translation of Black Man by Sergey Yesenin. It becomes obvious that the Polish interpreter used traditional methods of text translation, not always keeping the formal, semantic, and stylistic structure of the original text. So, in his version Pomorski emphasized the presence of a second author-creator, i.e. himself, and left traces of his interpreting initiative in almost every line, amplifying translation, introducing unmotivated inversions, using archaic and modernized lexis. Due to such a pretentious manner of Pomorski’s translation the reader received the text which doesn’t always remind Yesenin’s original lines.

Utopia as a literary genre gains popularity in transitory moments, periods of social, economic and mental transformations. Literary visions of the future can be treated as forecasts of the development of societies, or projections of dreams about a better tomorrow, but in the case of anti-utopias, these predictions are not optimistic and have their source in the reality contemporary to the author. The abundance of dystopias in the early 21st century testifies to writers’ concerns about the development of the country and society. The main theme of the latest anti-utopias is undoubtedly the problem of limiting or even depriving an individual of freedom, but the writers also showed particular concern for the future of Russia as a state, its territorial integrity, culture and special spirituality. Both the future autonomy of the country and its indivisibility were quite often questioned, and fears or even phobias were associated with the vision of the threat of Chinese colonisation.

Opis:
The work of Pseudo-Methodius, whose creation (in the original Syrian version) dates back to ca. 690, enjoyed considerable popularity in Medieval Slavic literatures. It was translated into Church Slavic thrice. In all likelihood, these translations arose independently of each other in Bulgaria, based on the Greek translation, the so-called ‘first Byzantine redaction’ (from the beginning of the 8th century). From Bulgaria, the Slavic version of the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Methodius spread to other Slavic lands – Serbia and Rus’. In the latter, the work of Pseudo-Methodius must have been known already at the beginning of the 12th century, given that quotations from it appear in the Russian Primary Chronicle (from the second decade of the 12th century). In the 15th century, an original, expanded with inserts taken from other works, Slavic version also came into being, known as the ‘interpolated redaction’. All of the Slavic translations display clear marks of the events that preceded them and the circumstances of the period in which they arose. Above all, the Saracens – present in the original version of the prophecy – were replaced by other nations: in the Novgorod First Chronicle we find the Mongols/Tatars (who conquered Rus’ in the first half of the 13th century).

Opis:
The paper is divided into two parts. The introductory part discusses the sociological aspect of the term New Russian, which becomes the starting point of the analysis of a specific type of literary characters. The literary picture of the New Russian has evolved in its long history (reaching the Old Russian folklore) as it did not always use to connote negative characteristics. Nowadays the New Russian is exclusively presented as an anti-character, the typical features of whom are inter alia: the absence of clearly defined identity, the specific attitude to money understood as the source of power, an extremely instrumental approach to other people, and disdain for the broadly understood tradition (including family tradition). In Russian literature this type was at the peak of its popularity at the turn of the millennium and since then it has degraded almost exclusively to mere anecdotal characters in readers’ memory.

A number of early works by L.N. Tolstoy is devoted to the problems of love in its modifications, modulations and shades. Tolstoy who, as an artist, discovered the law of “fluidity” of human person proves here that love states are multidimensional and changeable, that movement is the nature of love itself. Love feeling goes through its different kinds: from “beautiful” and “selfless” love to ideal, highly moral “active” love. Gradations are relative, differences among “kinds of love” are caused by degree of presence of subjective-egoistic element. Stages of “dialectics” of feelings are interconnected with emotional and spiritual development of the personality. Tolstoy is sure that man is free in choice of his own way in the life of heart and in his responsibility for it to his own life and other people.

Opis:
The sequence concerning the reign of Peter and Maria Lekapene as well as the Byzantine-Bulgarian relations between 927 and 969 can be found in the second version of the Hellenic and Roman Chronicle. It is a vast historiographical work, whose authors attempted to demonstrate the history of medieval Rus against the broad background of universal history, drawing on the sources of Byzantine provenance known in Slavonic translation (mainly the chronicles of John Malalas and George Hamartolus). Given the fact that the Hellenic and Roman Chronicle does not contain information about the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks, the year 1453 is considered the terminus ante quem for the second version of the said chronicle, which is of interest to us here. Its oldest preserved copies come from the mid-fifteenth century. The passages about Maria and Peter are extensive. They include about six columns of text written in semi-uncial in the most representative copy of the second version of the Hellenic and Roman Chronicle, i.e. manuscript БАН, 33.8.13, which is dated to the last quarter of the fifteenth century. Reading them allows one to ascertain that they constitute only a reworded version of the Slavic translation of the relevant passages of the B-version of the Georgius Monachus Continuatus. The content of the Byzantine source is quoted here in full without any abbreviations or author’s additions. The differences between the text of БАН, 33.8.13 and the text of РГБ, собр. Ундольского [Ф. 310], № 1289 – constituting the basis for editing the translation of the Georgius Monachus Continuatus of the B-version – are limited only to the stylistic and editorial level, except for the changes resulting most probably from the copyist misunderstanding the meaning of the original.

Opis:
The theme of the article focuses on the description of the tactile sphere selected for the presentation of Russian literary prose figures from the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 21st century. The term “homo hapticus” is understood in the article as a characterization of a figure expressed through touch. At the same time, haptics, representative of the physical, biological side of the characters’ functioning in the world, is closely related to their spiritual sphere and can be referred to types of saintly characters. These dependencies are expressed by both the touching and the touched subject, and in particular by the body elements involved in the haptic turn – in my examples these are the hands and the mouth. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that the haptics of the analysed characters abolishes the binary between the material and spiritual worlds. He points out that touch reflects not only a specific physical action, but is closely related to the Russian cultural context, primarily the religious. It is the haptics of the figures who act as healers that allows them to be called righteous men – expressing a loving Christian attitude towards their fellow man.

Opis:
" The text is a review of Roman Katsman’s monograph, entitled Vysshaya legkost’sozidaniya. Sleduyushchiye sto let russko-izrail’skoy literatury (Boston–St. Petersburg: Academic Studies Press–BiblioRossica, 2021). This is a continuation of his research included in the previous book, Neulovimaya real’nost’. Sto let russko-izrail’skoy literatury (1920–2020) (Boston–St. Petersburg: Academic Studies Press–BiblioRossica, 2020). Katsman steps back from perceiving Russian-Israeli literature as a part of Russian literature and describing it only in contexts and connections related to Russian culture. The recognition of such literary autonomy requires a separate research method, tools and conceptual apparatus. In his book from 2020, Katsman presents a philosophical and cultural paradigm, which aims to define the perspective of Russian-Israeli literature; in the other monograph, he supplements this paradigm with the myth-creating potential contained in this literature.

Opis:
Alexander Prokhanov is one of the most significant figures in the patriotic-conservative circles in Russia. What makes him extraordinary is his versatility – he is a political activist, journalist, media personality and a writer. The idea of special historical destiny of Russia is a constant component of his political views which have a strong mystical background. The novel Star Man is a typical example of the literary expansion of his political concepts by referring to the poetics of myth.

Opis:
The subject of discussion in the present paper is the model of the dispute as a speech genre created by Ivan Turgenev. Special attention is paid to eristic techniques of disputation. Eristic techniques (those proposed by Schopenhauer) determine the intention of a dispute aimed not at establishing the truth, but at convincing the addressees of the validity of argumentation presented by certain disputants. An analysis of the course of the disputes in Turgenev’s novels allows us to notice the use of many eristic techniques, in particular, the shifts of emphasis from the subject of the dispute (ad rem) to the disputing persons (ad personam). It proves that the writer focuses on pointing to the forces that can lead Russia towards a better future, rather than on looking for a way of solving problems. A positive characterization of the moderate disputants, while not of the fierce ones, allows for a more precise conclusion: Turgenev was a supporter not of eternal disputes but of dialogue and compromise.
