Opis:
The analyzed election campaign, which is so distant from the contemporary era and so different from the campaigns nowadays, presents the process of historical evolution: from campaigns which were “simple”, but demanding and requiring enormous effort from the candidate, to campaigns which are technologically and organizationally advanced. Nowadays the presence of electronics, psychology, political science and marketing reduces the number of candidate’s responsibilities in the process of election strategy. The candidate has a team of specialists who take over such responsibilities. Creating a candidate is not such a big problem as it was in Rome two thousand years ago.

Opis:

Opis:
The primacy of the Bishop of Rome is an essential, if not a fundamental element of the unity of Church and belongs to the mainstream of ecclesiology throughout its whole history. It is anchored in the study of the doctrine of the New Testament and from the very beginning, starting from the oldest patristic sources, such as the Epistle of Saint Clement of Rome to Corinthians and Ignatius of Antioch’s Epistles, there have been utterances indicating Saint Peters extraordinary role in the universal Church and the significance of his stay in Rome and the foundation of the local Christian community there. The Church Fathers also emphasize that Peter is present in all fundamental events related to the foundation of the Church and it was him who was entrusted with the care for its unity by Jesus. The first writers who start to describe Peter as the Bishop of Rome are Tertullian and Cyprian, who teaches that the Bishop’s authority is like the Apostles’ authority and uses the term cathedra Petri referring to Rome. Although Saint Irenaeus attributes the foundation of the Roman Church to Peter and Paul, in the course of years, especially after the transfer of the Capital of the Empire to Constantinople, he also puts the name of Peter at the top of the list of Roman Bishops. Many biblical scholars and patrologists also emphasize that Paul never laid claim to be the Bishop of Rome.

Opis:
The paper is a critical examination of the excavators’ interpretation of the sequence of walls of the 8th-6th century BC unearthed in Sector 9 of Carandini’s excavations between the Palatine and the Sacra Via as fortifications, and of a discontinuity they claim to have discovered in them as the original Porta Mugonia. The arguments against this interpretation: 1) the walls were too flimsy to have ever served as fortifications; 2) the proposed location of the main gate of the Palatine settlement is most improbable in the light of the natural relief and the character of land surface of the zone; 3) the excavators’ reconstruction of the street pattern before the Late Archaic transformations, centering on the alleged gate, is entirely arbitrary and contrary to the zone’s natural configuration; 4) the discontinuity interpreted as the opening of a gate is not obvious in the first wall and indemonstrable in the others; 5) from the last phase of the second wall onwards there is nothing that might be interpreted as the surface of a street that would have led from the gate to the Palatine.

history of Rome
Opis:
Tacitus’texts are permeated with fear. This effect is reached as a result of the use of a rich vocabulary related to fear and numerous scenes in which fear plays a major role. The structure of Tacitus’stories is in fact composed of the overlapping kinds of fear caused and felt by people in power, participating in its execution, aspiring to hold it and subjected to it. Consequently, the stories expose the mechanism of Roman power, which was driven and fueled by fear. The reason why Tacitus used the description of fear in the historical texts also seems to be significant. The aim of this article is therefore to look at the semantic layer of the words that the historian used to illustrate fear, to emphasize the aspect of power within interpersonal relations, which were almost entirely based on fear, and to indicate the reason that could have prompted Tacitus to use this feeling in presenting the history of Rome.

ROME (CITY)
Opis:
In order to determine the number of inhabitants of the city of Rome in the imperial period, scholars have used four methods. The first one takes into account the amount of grain distributed each day to the population, the second one the quantity of grain imported to Rome every year, the third one the number of houses and insulae, the fourth one, less useful for the period discussed in this article, the amount of pork distributed to the inhabitants. It seems certain that at that time Rome could have had a million inhabitants, crowded in an unbearably small space. This number began to diminish in the 4th century A.D.

Opis:
The present paper discusses a peculiar fragment in ”Historia Augusta” (v. Probi 8) concerning the gift of a horse to Probus from his soldiers. According to former scholars, it represents nothing else than a literary topos. Consequently, the passage has not been the object of much interest to contemporary historians. However, the author argues that, irrespectful of its authenticity, this anecdote may constitute a key to proper understanding of Probus’s image created in “Historia Augusta”. Thus, on one level of analysis, the story serves as a means of presenting an idealised image of the emperor. On the other hand, it may also be considered as an omen imperii.

The main aim of the following article „Wieczny, wieczny Rzym!..”. Uwagi na marginesach Veneri et Romae Jerzego Żuławskiego is to describe Rome, the facts and imaginative world seen through author’s eyes. Żuławski’s “Heartily Rome” is shown as a place where reality and mind creation infiltrate. Described places have the power to encourage author’s imagination and influence his memories to create a unique vision of his own world. Rome as a “dead” city (because of the souvenirs of the past) appeares as a place with its own life, in full bloom, not from Bedeker’s points of view, but from the subjective, very personal position. This paper is divided into three parts: Dead city, Old and contemporary Rome, Alone wanderer. Every single part is related to the distinctive feature which in the end will be helpful to create an interpretation of Jerzy Żuławski’s essay Veneri et Romae which was chosen as the fundamental base. To be able to create accurate analysis and interpretation the author of this paper reached for many information contained in dictionaries, additional literary and methodology output and different sources which are connected with: Rome, journey, city.

The aim of this study was to examine the main features of the bioclimatic conditions of three European cities using a new Universal Thermal Climate Index. Daily values of meteorological variables for 12 UTC for the cities for 1990-2001 were used in the study. Using the frequency of UTCI and one-way Anova, the results showed that in all the three cities “no thermal stress” dominated throughout the year. “Extreme” values of heat as well as “cold stress” were observed but in none of the cities “extreme cold stress” occurred. The values of UTCI differed for all the three cities in each studied year. The cities differed from each other in each month during the whole year with the exception of spring - March and April.

Opis:
Roman Triptych by Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936) is a musical impression of the Eternal City: each of the tone poems – Fountains of Rome (1916), Pines of Rome (1924), and Roman Festivals (1928) – contains four part-images evocatively described in a literary commentary contained in the score. The object of musical meditation involves not solely the monuments and views of Rome, but also the town’s history (including episodes of antiquity and the Middle Ages) as well as urban folklore. This dazzling musical vision, characteristic for its masterly instrumentation, is entwined with dilemmas from the Respighi epoch. The composer belongs to the so-called generazione dell’ottanta, i.e. a formation of composers striving towards a renaissance of Italian instrumental music and hence opposing the degeneration which, in their opinion, affected European music under the impact of the expressive subjectivism of German compositions. Certain aspects of the role which they ascribed to Italy were concurrent with Fascist conceptions. An assessment of Respighi’s actual ideological involvement, however, remains an open question – his aesthetic attitude assumed shape prior to 1922 and the composer did not take a stand regarding political issues.

Opis:
Throughout Gabriele d’Annunzio’s vast and multiform productions, Ovid’s presence shines through with the strength of a model both ancient and modern. Since his years at the “Cicognini”, he feels bound to Ovid by a similarity “in lyrical ways” and by a relationship of “consanguinity” based on their common origins. The assiduity in Ovid’s readings, testified to by the large number of volumes of the Augustan poet in the library of the Vittoriale, is reflected in a dense network of echoes – some perspicuous, others subtle – that can be found in the Vate’s most famous works. During his twilight years, d’Annunzio’s nocturnal exploration finds singular affinities with the Ovidian elegies of exile to which he feels attracted the most. Even in the nascent silent film industry, d’Annunzio, creator and forerunner of fashions, sees a prodigious form of visual art that has in Ovid a millenary antecedent. Beyond the unavoidable differences separating the two temporally distant authors, the paper attempts to outline an overall profile of the correspondences and possible equations between d’Annunzio and Ovid without pretense of exhaustiveness. In the wake of perspectives inaugurated by distinguished masters, it is an attempt to offer cues for interpreting, from the vestiges of classicism, d’Annunzio’s art within the Ovidian framework.

The main aim of the article is to present some plans of rebuilding of Rome and Berlin as an important element and mechanism of process of legitimizing the totalitarian political system (Italian fascism and German nazizm). The process of rebuilding of Rome started with the uncovering of some important monuments constructed in ancient times (for instance Ara Pacis Augustae or Colosseum). Thanks to creation of some new roads and streets (for instance via dell’Impero – modern Via dei Fori Imperiali or via della Conciliazione), we can walk and admire the Eternal City. Afterwards, some new complexes had been constructed – such as the university campus (città universitaria), great sport complex (Foro Mussolini, modern Foro Italico) and the vast area for world’s exhibition (EUR). On the other hand, some plans connected with the new German capital (so-called Germania) remained plans and sketches, only.

Apollonius of Tyana
philosopher
Opis:
The present paper examines the life of Apollonius of Tyana, who lived in the Greek territory in the first century AD, a famous pagan Phytagorean philosopher and, allegedly, a man of numerous miracles. The text is divided into three parts. In the first one the sources of information about Apollonius are discussed. Many of them come from debates between pagan and Christian intellectuals, who lived after his death. The most important testimony is the biography of Apollonius by Flavius Philostratos, a sophist connected with the court of Julia Domna, wife of emperor Septimius Sever. In the second part of this paper Apollonius’s unusual life is shown with an aim of evaluating which of the events reported in the sage’s biographies contain some element of historical truth and which are only implausible anecdotes. The third part of the article attempts to provide an answer to the question raised in the title. It seems that Apollonius of Tyana was neither a saint nor a charlatan in the Christian nomenclature but rather a figure who could be named theos aner (divine man) in the Hellenic(?) sense of this term. He was an eminent pagan holy man who throughout his entire life held intellectual discussions with Christians.

The compartment in A Change of Heart is a secular space. However, the Sacred will gradually invade it through hallucinations of the narrator. Thus an unexpected and fantastic struggle led by the Pope, priests, cardinals, prophets and sibyls against Leon Delmont will cause a change of his initial decision, motivating and justifying the novel’s title.

The paper presents the results of studies of epitaphs for children up to almost eight years of age from the city of Rome (3rd-4th c. – B. Stawoska-Jundziłł, Vixit cum parentibus. Children aged under seven in Christian families from Rome of 3rd-4th c., Bydgoszcz 2008) in comparison with the views of John Chrysostom on the upbringing of small children. The content of over 2000 children from Rome demonstrates a high status of even the youngest offspring in the Christian families from this city. The founders cared for their religious „endowment”, bestowed their love on them and tried to remember them as members of the family even if they had died after a few days or months. It was unquestionably believed that small children are immediately saved, go to God and commune with the saints. Thanks to this the family could hope for their support and prayers. Whereas, John Chrysostom only casually mentions small children and, what is more, ambivalently: on one hand presenting them on the basis of thorough observations of their behavior and looking after them and on the other hand as mindless creatures, a harbinger of valuable person following the Stoics e.g. Seneca. As far as the most important for me question of the death of small children is concerned he takes a stand similar to that of the Romans. The children are really without sins (they did not commit them consciously) so God shall accept them only through the hardships of illness and death. Now they are asleep (unlike in the studied epitaphs) but they will rise from the dead and join their parents. Thus, the despair after their death is pointless; God decided the best for them. The difference lies in the fact that the founders of epitaphs more decidedly see the perfection of posthumous existence of even the smallest children who there reach their full maturity whereas John does not seem to be interested in this issue since he directs his teaching mostly to maturing and mature Christians in the earthly life and not in the beyond.

Nummularii, like the other groups of entrepreneurs in the ancient Rome, such as tra- pezitae, argentarii, mensarii, mensularii, coactores, coactores argentarii, stipulatores argentarii, collectarii, were engaged in the banking business. Among the wide range of services offered by the Roman bankers nummularii dealt initially only with the quality and exchange of coins. Therefore, by performing these operations they performed the role of official assay institutions. Their duties were initially primarily to examine coins and metal from which they were made, and setting the value of minted gold and silver co- ins. Nummularii have used empirical examining methods, based on the senses of sight, touch, hearing, and by comparing them to the patterns and samples. They also checked whether the coin was minted by the appropriate authority. There is no evidence that other bankers, in addition to nummularii, were involved in the control of the quality of the coin. Presumably, after some time they expanded their business in banking. In addi- tion to examining the quality of coins nummularii also engaged in their exchange. They conducted also deposit operations and that’s why they became competitors to argentarii on the market of banking services.

The author of this article looks into Jesus’ attitude towards secular authority and the State as well as their law and institutions in the view of synoptic tradition (Mt 22,15–22; Mk 12,13–17; Łk 20,20–26). After deep exegesis has been completed, the author states that according to Jesus’ teaching presented in selected materials, the relations between the Church and the State should be created and guaranteed in order not to force a religious citizen choose either one or other in a situation in which faith and living according to its rules in everyday life is perceived by laic representatives of authority as opposing the state and rejecting its laws and institutions. It should also be mentioned that Jesus led his wordlylife during divine Caesar’s reign and Pax Roman and was not convicted for any political or state offence. Living in both Caesar’s kingdom and God’s kingdom he led his life according to the rules of Kingdom Gospel. Here is the meaning of His words: „The God’s kingdom is among you” (Łk 17,21).

The paper relates to the information contained in the Early Christian inscriptions from Rome (IC V R v. 1 - 1 0 ), from the fourth to sixth century, concerning boys below 8 years of age and referred to in the epitaphs by the term puer. The age was selected so that the information concerned children and not teenagers when the overtone of such expression could have sexual connotations. There are only 38 such epitaphs for 1962 children in the above mentioned age (1.9% ). More than a half of them (20) are very modest containing only name, age and sometimes the simplest epithet and motto (bm, in pace). The rest however include the information typical of other children’s epitaphs, posthumous descriptions, baptism details and allusions to the social background. The founders of the tomb stones are parents (10) and then the term puer is additional, even tender but also anonymous people (28) when the term could signify a slave (only one sure case) or a foster child, a boy who knew the faith (puer in fide). In my opinion they must have been orphans brought up by the community, sometimes assigned to serve in the Church (especially boys called puer nomine X ).

Władysław Oleszczyński (1808-1866) was the most outstanding Polish sculptor and medallist of the Romantic epoch, the author of the first – not existing any more today – monument of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań (1857), who, as a participant in the November Uprising was forced to remain in emigration, mainly in France, where he carried out a lot of works for the French society. He died and was buried in Rome. We know relatively little about Oleszczyński's private life, or about the very person of the artist. In the record office of the Community of the Resurrection in Rome there are two interesting documents. One of them is a list of things deposited with the Community after the artist's unexpected death; and the other one is detailed information about the expenses connected with his burial. In the office there is also one letter written by Władysław Oleszczyński to the Ressurectionists in March 1861, a copy of the artist's another – earlier – letter, a couple of letters written by his brother Antoni several months after the sculptor's death, and two letters written by his widow at roughly the same time. From them we learn the inside story of the stormy ending of Władysław Oleszczyński's marriage to an unknown French woman, which lasted for nearly thirty years. Although the cited documents and letters do not give unambiguous answers to many questions, they still broaden our knowledge of that extraordinary artist.

In his letters to Marcin Kromer, he reported on the help he provided to his patron in their activities for Poles, especially in establishing and building the Polish hospice and the Church of St. Stanislaus. He described the activities of Poles in Rome. After Hozjusz’s death, Reszka continued to organize activities for the Polish diaspora by establishing the Polish College. In addition, he recommended those traveling to the Polish Commonwealth to seek Kromer, helped settle matters in the Roman Curia, lent money, and was the executor of the wills of Poles who died in the Eternal City.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to investigate the Roman correspondence by Cyprian Norwid. As far as this author is concerned the term: Roman correspondence can imply some different issues, like the letters written during Norwid’s four visits to the Eternal City within the space of the years 1844-1849, some later correspondence referring to Rome and expressing the author’s longing for this place, letters to the members of the Congregation of the Resurrection in Rome etc. There is also a category of correspondence in which Norwid poses as an ancient Roman using some Latin words or structures typical of Roman correspondence: such words as: Vale, Latin forms of expressing the date and place (ex. Lutetiae Parisiorum) or initial formulae including the greeting and the names of the addresser and addressee. There are also very interesting letters in which Norwid exactly identifies himself with Ovidius. Such Norwid’s letters connected with the ancient Rome is the main subject of this article. Most of them Norwid wrote in 1860s, when he most probably began to write letters with the mentioned elements. These letters result from some Norwid’s special sense of Roman identity, which is emphasised by the expression: Civis Romanus that Norwid used with regard to himself in some of these letters. The article analyses the way in which Norwid understood his “Roman identity” and why he was defining himself as a “Roman citizen”. The general conclusion is that such references in Norwid’s letters are connected with his sense of many-sided alienation. They are considerably different from the ,,Roman letters” written by Norwid, co-creating the romantic Rome of artists, in the years 1844-1849.

Opis:
In Fellini’s Roma, the famous sequence in which ancient frescoes are discovered during the construction of the subway is a key scene and an allegory of his filmic and artistic approach. But Fellini’s boldness goes further. During the sequence, the filmmaker, using a somewhat fantastic shortcut, breaks through the wall that separates the world of the living and the forgotten world of ancient figures. He thus uses metalepsis at the heart of the film. Figures who were about to fade away under the effect of the outside world come again to life in his film, just as, in Virgil, the souls of the dead, grouped on the banks of the river Lethe, are waiting in the hope of returning to the world of the living. The film has often been compared to a patchwork, or a mosaic, imaging a complex and stratified city. But rather than a mosaic, we should speak of threshold crossings, that is to say rhetorical effects, amongst which the main one could be metalepsis. Fellini’s Roma is not only a melancholic and hectic fresco of a visionary director, but also an ever-moving network of initiatory paths. Through the Fellinian shifts and transgressions, it is the incessant renewal of Rome which is shown.

Mensarius is one of the terms describing Roman bankers. It is the Latin equivalent of the Greek trapezites – the term first used to describe persons making bank operations. This term was used by Titus Livius and from Ab urbe condita we can take important information about bankers. We find quinqueviri mensarii and triumviri mensarii. The first of them were appointed as a committee in 352 B.C., and according to plebiscitium de quinqueviris mensariis creandis. Quinqueviri mensarii were supposed to solve the problem of Roman citizens’ debts, arising from loans – nexum. They acted as as public banks. The results of the works of this committee were outstanding – they helped citizens and did not cause any loss for the treasury. It so happened, because they used public funds to cover the debts only when the debtors could give a sufficient guarantee. The rest of the debtors had to transfer their goods, which were then evaluated and sold. Triumviri mensarii were appointed as three independent clerks, having wide competences, to stop the crisis doming from the lack of money in circulation (propter penuriam argenti). They were appointed by lex Minucia de triumviris mensariis, from 216 B.C. The committee had probably the same competence as this from 352 B.C. However triumviri mensariis, contrary to the previous committee, were not appointed ad hoc, but they have operated as an office until 210 B.C. Their competence was wide. They registered citizens’ debts and were making payments. They were collecting money as depositum irregulare. Triumviri mensariis were clerks acting as state officials. You can claim that both described categories of Roman officials were acting as a sui generis public bank.

From time immemorial the society has had the need of mass entertainment, defined nowadays as the mass events. The example of this can be the organization of the Roman society, where, after analyzing the source materials, we can indicate some numerous examples of the mass events, religious, sports, or political ones. In the Roman legislation we can find a series legal regulations concerning the rules of organizing such events, chiefly, if it is about the public security. In each city, also in Rome, there was the calendar of mass events, which was completed all the time. The bodies responsible for organizing the mass events in Rome were the consuls and ediles, while, in municipalities the duumvirs and ediles. They had to provide the appropriate measures to organize the events and to guarantee the security. In case of the political events, organized during the election, the responsibility lay with the organizers. The security of the participants, particularly at the amphitheatres, was guaranteed through the legislative regulation of the principles of taking the seats at the audience. Breaking the rules was punished by the high fine. The security of the mass events in the Ancient Rome maybe was not so clearly defined as it is nowadays, but it was the matter of the Roman legislators and the public bodies. Hence, during the frequent sports events or the other entertainments organized at the huge buildings, as for example at Circus Maximus, which could contain even about 300,000 spectators, the construction disasters or public riots were the rareness.

Opis:
The third successor of St. Peter on the see of the Roman ecclesiastic community, Clement of Rome, is the author of a letter addressed to the believers in Corinth. The content of this letter offers an essential witness concerning the problems in the initial stage of the history of the Church, especially in relation to its small particle in Corinth. One of the issues discussed by Clement is encouragement for the effort of inner perfection, i.e. holiness. His offer directed to the Corinthian community contains several stages which a Christian should undergo. The ascent to holiness, according to the Bishop of Rome, starts with acknowledgement of one’s guilts. This is a condition and basis for the next stage, i.e. penance and conversion. The final stage is built on the theological virtues of faith and hope. The concept of achieving holiness, offered by Clement of Rome, is close to other witnesses of that epoch: Didache and the letters of Ignatius of Antioch.

Legislation is an art that takes inspiration from a variety of sources. There is a question: Should the antiquity be one of them? The paper attempts to give the answer. The author gives some proposals of such borrowing of ideas in the realm of marriage and family: making a choice of a candidate for a spouse, engagement and financial aspect of future marriage, contracting marriage without obligatory form, and a role of a father in the family. The presentation leads to the conclusion that the legislator should value culture of antiquity as a source of ideals but while borrowing the antique ideas he must follow the rules needed for such an action. The rules are presented in the paper, as postulates for good legislation.

History of emigration is inscribed in the history of many nations and countries; in this history it is just the citizens who are outside their countries that cultivate their national identity, the language, customs and religion. These nations also include Poles, who also in Italy took care of the attachment to their Polish identity and to the Catholic faith. „The faith and Polishness” are the two components that in the ideological and practical dimension accompanied Polish emigrants. The article shows an unknown person – Teodor Feliks Domaradzki – who was the founder and the first headmaster of the Rome school, and his cooperation with Mother Teresa Kalkstein, the Superior General of the Sisters of the Resurrection, whose result was the service to Polish emigrants in starting their school education in the Polish language.

Research of the Irano-Roman relations seems dominated by teh military perspective. This situation is cause by the very nature of the sources which mention both states mostly in light of the warfare waged between them. Equally fascinating are the diplomatic relations between Rome and Iran. One of the most interesting aspects of non-military relations are financial flows between both states. According to John Lydos, king Yazgerd was to offer emperor Theodosius II (408-450) building together a fortress which was to block the passage through Caucasus. At the same time the king demanded from the emperor participation in the costs of the defense of the fortress. The problem of the reconciliation of the payments for defending of the Caucasian frontier became the grudge between the states making the rectification of the relationships even more difficult. The key problem seems to determine the peace negotiations which initiated Iranian claim towards the Empire. The second problem might be the motives which drove Iranian monarchs in their financial claims towards the emperors.

The intention of this article is to show how a traditional aesthetic comprehension of the landscape results in overlooking landscapes regarded as degraded. Such an approach appears to dominate contemporary perceptions of Italy, resulting in their depiction as Bel Paese, whose panorama is sometimes disturbed by ugly sites. In turn, unsightliness is regarded as the outcome of, i.a. a lack of sensitivity on the part of the inhabitants. Such an omission, however, is an act of injustice. The article‘s substance is a confrontation of a vision of Rome as seen by Georg Simmel and a depiction of the Eternal City in the documentary film Sacro GRA (2013); the director presents the daily life of the residents of the region of an extensive Roman urban highway, which can be easily described as anti-landscape. Such a confrontation also serves a depiction, based on selected examples, of the way in which the comprehension of the landscape in Italian literature from the second half of the twentieth century changed: by acquiring an ethical dimension the landscape ceased to be an exclusively aesthetic phenomenon.

Over the last fifty years the tendency towards a dispersion of productive activities that emerged with globalisation and the advent of telematics have fuelled processes that are changing the structure of metropolitan areas across the world. Against the background of the general process of metropolisation, it is interesting nowadays to study the characteristics, structure and development trends of a vast “hybrid” area that has grown up around the established city of Rome. The subject of this work is an analysis of the creative sector between Rome and the sea, and the potential for future development in this area.

The aim of this paper is to present the report on the journey of Cardinal Friedrich of Hessen-Darmstadt from Rome to Wrocław, undertaken in 1676 to assume governorship of Silesia and real power over the diocese of Wrocław. The report, published in this city soon after the completion of his journey, is now preserved in the Old Prints Department of the Wrocław University Library. This source contributes new facts from the biography of the cardinal – the founder of the famous St. Elisabeth Chapel alongside the Cathedral of Wrocław, decorated with statues sculpted in Rome. During his journey to Silesia, Friedrich of Hessen-Darmstadt stayed with his retinue in Loreto, Verona and Trento, entertained everywhere with great pomp and ceremony. Then he went to Vienna, where he took part in imperial audiences and was granted the title “Durchlauchtigst”. At the end of his journey he went to Nysa and from there to Wrocław. From the art history point of view this travelogue contributes information about the “occasional architecture” and the decoration of the churches in Nysa and Wrocław, liturgical vestments and vessels, and about costumes and vehicles of Silesian dignitaries. From the literature on the subject we know that on the occasion of the arrival of the cardinal to Wrocław three new doors to the local cathedral were founded. The main entrance doors were decorated with relief depicting Jacob’s Dream and Joseph in a Well. In the light of the appropriate biblical quotations and commentaries on them these scenes illustrate the idea of the gate to the heavenly Jerusalem as well as the symbolical transition from the sphere of death to the realm of life.

The article aims at analyzing the concept and purpose of death in the Aeneid, Book 2. In its premise, the concept of death presented within the poem reveals its ethnic, social and cultural tone. The deaths which close eight books of the Aeneid indicate the progress of a main theme: abdicate the past to defend the future. Initially, towards the closing of Book 2 Creusa dies: a loyal, affectionate wife and mother who is nevertheless to be replaced by a young bride chosen for political benefits. The modes and circumstances of the deaths elicit some immediate investigations: first, it seems meaningful that some die in the bloom of youth and others in old age; second, some must die as sacrifices to the gods; third, some are destined to die because they demonstrate furious difficulties to the completion of Aeneas’ duty. Before discussing the concept of death in Book 2 it is essential to introduce the reader into some considerations representing the structure and purpose of Book 2. The authors would like to thank professor Jakub Pigoń (Institute of Classical, Mediterranean and Oriental Studies, University of Wroclaw) for his guidance and insightful remarks throughout the process of writing of this article.

Opis:
Przedmiotem artykułu jest poszukiwanie wątków chrześcijańskich obecnych w nieoczywisty sposób w wybranych filmach Federico Felliniego. Analizowane filmy Noce Cabirii, Rzym i Słodkie życie łączy przestrzeń społeczna Rzymu, naznaczonego zarówno piętnem antycznej kultury, jak i Watykanu, jako siedziby państwa kościelnego. Filmy spaja też finałowe portretowe ujęcie bohaterek, mające charakter metajęzykowego osobistego gestu reżysera. Omawiane obrazy różnią się sposobem narracji i strukturą, ale wszystkie stawiają pytania o zasady moralne i podają w wątpliwość, a nawet kwestionują wartości religijne i kulturowe, poszukując głębszego sensu. Rzym jawi się jako współczesne miasto grzechu (biblijna Sodoma i Gomora), gdzie świętość i czystość coraz trudniej odnaleźć.
The subject of this article is the search for Christian themes presented in non-obvious ways in selected films of Federico Fellini. The analyzed films Nights of Cabiria, Rome and Sweet Life are united by the social space of Rome, marked by both the stigma of ancient culture and the Vatican, as the seat of the ecclesiastical state. The films are also tied together by the final portrait of the heroines, which has the character of a meta-linguistic personal gesture made by the director. The paintings differ in narrative style and structure, but all of them raise questions about moral principles and question or even challenge religious and cultural values in search of deeper meaning. Rome appears as a modern city of sin (the biblical Sodom and Gomorrah), where holiness and purity are increasingly difficult to find.

G. D’Annunzio, G. Jacoby /1925/, Quo Vadis, reż. M. LeRoy /1951/, Quo Vadis, reż. J. Kawalerowicz /2001/) zazwyczaj wykorzystywały typowe wzorce melodramatu historycznego: historia miłosna między rzymskim patrycjuszem a młodą chrześcijanką Ligią została osadzona w szerszym kontekście historycznym, w czasach wczesnego chrześcijaństwa i prześladowań Nerona wymierzonych w wyznawców Jezusa. Piotra).
The paper concentrates on feature films based upon Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz - a novel about ancient Rome which contributed to the writer’s Nobel Prize for literature and has been translated into more than forty languages. These star-studded movies (Quo Vadis? dir. E. Guazzoni /1913/, Quo Vadis? dir. G. D’Annunzio, G. Jacoby /1925/, Quo Vadis, dir. M. LeRoy /1951/, Quo Vadis, dir. J. Kawalerowicz /2001/) usually employed standard patterns of historical melodrama: the love story between Roman patrician and young Christian woman named Lygia is set against the broader historical background of early Christianity and its persecution by Nero. Regardless of time period and country of production, each of these films included the climax scene of bloody games - with Christian martyrs dying at the arena theater. The paper focuses on diverse cinematic designs of this bloodshed spectacle; furthermore, it tackles upon the multi-layered contexts of the representations of key historical figures (notably Nero and St. Peter).

The article discusses the image of a triumphal column in Norwid’s poems “Vendôme,” “Odpowiedź do Włoch (Fraszka),” and Szczesna. The inspiration to enquire about its function and symbolic power comes from Hegel’s lectures on aesthetics and the following passage from Epimenides: “The many columns […] many stray columns sought an edifice…” In Norwid’s thought, eternal glory is not meant for those who stand atop a triumphal column since such monuments can easily turn into dust, as confirmed by the fate of other monuments such as those of ancient leaders and Napoleon, but for the one who comes close to the “Pre-Eternal” upon physical death. The “power” is thus a value irrevocably tied to the triumphal column but has to rise to another dimension, other than that of physical power. This article recalls the idea of Paris as the “new Rome,” which was revived in the nineteenth century.

The Roman Republic struggled with many pathologies. These included usury, excessive profligacy, excesses in food and drink, gambling and political corruption. These phenomena caused far-reaching negative social consequences, so the state tried to eliminate them by means of laws. Their history clearly shows that they were extremely ineffective. They were published with noble intentions of improving customs in a broad sense and stopping the negative phenomenon of the disappearance of the features of the former ethos. They were an expression of the noble but somewhat naive faith presented by the Roman legislator that a problem could be solved by means of a law. This faith was shaken many times, and the reality of the functioning of these regulations proves that the society will always find a way to circumvent regulations that are not adapted to the conditions in which it lives

Opis:
The paper is concerned with the advice regarding choosing a wife presented in the thirteenthcentury educational treatise De regimine principum by Giles of Rome. It was the most popular “mirror of prince” in the later Middle Ages. In defining the criteria one should pay attention to Giles distinguishes three kinds of “goods” (bona) that an appropriate wife-to-be should possess. These are the so-called external (exterior) goods and internal (interior) ones, the latter being in turn divided into the bodily goods (bona corporis) and the spiritual goods (bona animae). The first kind includes such goods as noble descent (nobilitas generis), multitude of friends (pluralitas amicorum) and abundance of wealth (multitudo divitiarum); the second – beauty (pulchritudo) and size (magnitudo); the third – self control (temperantia) and liking for work (amor operositatis). These three kinds of goods, as well as particular examples of them, are drawn by Giles from Aristotle’s Rhetorica. Yet, when compared to those enumerated by medieval theologians and canon lawyers in their discussons of reasons for marrying, they do not considerably differ from them. What matters is that Giles sees and accepts all of them as relatively equally important as criteria used for choosing a wife. This is because they are all necessary for setting up a successful marriage that will bring happiness to a man.

Opis:
It is a well known fact that for several centuries the Syrian cult of St. Alexius of Rome († ca 411) remained anonymous, and for the first time his name was attested in a Greek liturgical hymn composed by Joseph the Hymnographer († 886). The reason why he was given this name remains obscure. The author argues that this was due to the transformation of the originally Syrian cult into a new (Byzantine) linguistic and cultural environment and the process went through two subsequent stages. First, since in Byzantium, unlike Syria, anonymous cults were not usual, an attempt was made to deduce his name from the Bible, where the same expression Man of God (iš elohim in Hebrew) is regularly used for prophets: not only anonymous, but also Moses, Samuel, Shemaiah, Elijah, and Elisha. Most frequently this epithet is applied to the prophet Elisha, hence this name must have been initially chosen by Byzantine bookmen to be given to the anonymous Syrian saint. Second, since the name Elisha, although well known in Byzantium, remained basically alien to the Greek speaking public and used to be perceived as exclusively Hebrew (not merely in origin, but also functionally), it was spontaneously Hellenized by its substitution with the Greek name ’Αλέξιος which sounded quite similarly to ’Ελι(σ) σαĩος (Elisha) as the originally Syrian cult spread more widely in a Greek speaking milieu. This kind of substitution of personal names based on their phonetic similarity is by no means unparalleled and can be typologically verified. Somewhere outside Byzantium, the same Syrian cult was onomastically adapted using the same algorithm as in the first Byzantine stage. However, from the same list of the Hebrew prophets another name was chosen, and the same anonymous Syrian saint was called Moses (attested in Arabic and Georgian sources). This time his name was chosen not because of the frequency with which a Hebrew prophet was characterized as a Man of God in the Bible (as in the case of Elisha), but taking into consideration the significance of personality among the same five Hebrew prophets.

This article examines the recent developments in the prosecution of international crimes committed in the Palestinian Territory, focusing mainly on the role of the International Criminal Court. The author analyses the Palestinian accession to the Rome Statute and the declarations issued pursuant to Art. 12(3) in order to verify whether it is possible to bring justice to Palestine through the prosecution of atrocities committed by both parties. The article pays great attention to the most recent events, such as the Prosecutor’s report on the Mavi Marmara incident and the subsequent decision of the Pre-Trial Chamber. Issues related to the Palestinian statehood are taken in account in relation to the interplay between international criminal justice and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Opis:
Pomimo ogromnego znaczenia jako świadectwa niezachowanych partii Historii rzymskiej Kasjusza Diona, Epitome Ksyfi linosa to jedno z najmniej rozpoznanych źródeł bizantyńskich.
Xiphilinos’ Epitome constitutes one of the most understudied Byzantine sources despite its great importance and role as a transmitter of the unpreserved parts of Cassius Dio’s Roman History. Until recently it was mainly perceived as an unoriginal product whose author was only a passive and often incompetent copyist. For scholars of Ancient Rome Epitome was seen only as a substitute for Dio, while Byzantinists deemed Xiphilinos as an uninteresting author. Analysis of Epitome’s first chapter devoted to Pompey shows that in fact, he was an author who actively shaped his work according to his own literary tastes and trends functioning in eleventh-century Byzantine historiography. Epitome, a didactic work dedicated to the emperor Michael VII Doukas, was an intellectual product of an era where the ancient roots of Byzantium started to play an increasingly important role in contemporary political discourse. It was also the first work of Byzantine historiography which devoted as much space to Roman history before the establishment of imperial monarchy.

The article is concerned with the title aeternus Augustus and its position in Roman imperial titulature at the end of the third and during the fourth century A.D. Modern authors tend to rate this title among the so-called unofficial imperial titulature, mainly due to the fact that it served to admire the emperor. The paper discusses forms and methods of addressing the emperor who was determined by the appellation aeternus Augustus. The analysis of these enables to appoint, out of the emperors of the discussed period, those few who were officially specified as aeterni.

Urban geomorphology has important implications in spatial planning of human activities, and it also has a geotouristic potential due to the relationship between cultural and geomorphological heritage. Despite the introduction of the term Anthropocene to describe the deep influence that human activities have had in recent times on Earth evolution, urban geomorphological heritage studies are relatively rare and limited and urban geotourism development is recent. The analysis of the complex urban landscape often need the integration of multidisciplinary data. This study aims to propose the first urban geomorphoheritage assessment method, which originates after long-lasting previous geomorphological and geotouristic studies on Rome city centre, it depict rare examples of the geomorphological mapping of a metropolis and, at the same time, of an inventory of urban geomorphosites. The proposal is applied to geomorphosites in the Esquilino neighbourhood of Rome, whose analysis confirm the need for an ad hoc method for assessing urban geomorphosites, as already highlighted in the most recent literature on the topic. The urban geomorphoheritage assessment method is based on: (i) the urban geomorphological analysis by means of multitemporal and multidisciplinary data; (ii) the geomorphosite inventory; and (iii) the geomorphoheritage assessment and enhancement. One challenge is to assess invisible geomorphosites that are widespread in urban context. To this aim, we reworked the attributes describing the Value of a site for Geotourism in order to build up a specific methodology for the analysis of the urban geomorphological heritage.

In this article I shall present an in-depth study of the condition of the Jews living in the city of Rome during the Middle and Late Republic. I shall make use mainly of epigraphic and literary sources, such as Appianus, Cicero, Josephus, Philo, Suetonius, and Varro. It seems to me, according to a careful reading of epigraphic data as well as the literary evidence presented by Valerius Maximus, that the first record of a Jewish presence in Rome ought to be dated no earlier than the second half of the second century B.C.E. According to Philo, only by the middle of the first century B.C.E. is there evidence of a much larger Jewish presence in Rome. Most of the Jews arrived as slaves in the wake of Pompey’s conquest of the Hasmonean kingdom in 63 B.C.E. and in the aftermath, during Aulus Gabinius’ consulate in 58 B.C.E. Yet there were also some liberti and a few peregrini, or immigrants. Most of them probably settled in the Subura. A hint of how Judaism and Jews were perceived during the Late Republic is given by the writings of Varro and Cicero. It seems that Varro was very impressed by the lack of images in the Jewish religion, an attitude which suggested a certain similarity to earlier Roman cultic practices. On the other hand, Cicero’s Pro Flacco reflects a negative attitude towards Judaism. Judaism is therefore characterized as a Barbarian superstition, opposed to Rome’s traditional values. It seems that the Jews as a group played a very negligible part, yet they were active in the politics of the Late Republic. A careful reading of Cicero’s Pro Flacco can show that during this period Jews still had no communitarian institutions, although they grouped together. Moreover, they were probably clientes of their conqueror patronus, Pompey, and as such they could create political pressure. Most of the Jews supported Pompey until the battle of Pharsalus. However, another group did form, which supported Aulus Gabinius, who had once been a cliens of Pompey. Later on, when Gabinius transferred his allegiance from Pompey to Julius Caesar during the Civil War, most of the Jews of Rome did the same, and switched their allegiance, following the steps of their leader in Judaea, the High Priest Hyrcanus II. According to a careful reading of a passage of Josephus’ Antiquities, which reports the decree of Publius Servilius Isauricus to the city of Parium, Julius Caesar recognized the Jewish communities, till then informal institutions, as collegia licita through the Lex Iulia.

The main point of this text is an attempt to present a few duties of the praetor and try to stipulate the origins of them. First of all it should be noted that the term praetor was not consistently used to describe only the jurisdictional magistrate, and it was used in relation, for example, to the consuls. This was probably because the sound etymological sense of the word (praeire: “to go before, to precede, to lead the way”). The appointment of praetor urbanus in 367 BC under leges Licniae Sextiae was not associated with the need to carry out a jurisdictional competence. The origins of the magistrate were strictly military in its nature, which since the end of the third century BC gave way to the area of jurisdiction. Raised considerations apply also to the praetor for foreigners (praetor peregrinus), who has not resolved disputes between the Romans and foreigners (peregrini), and his role was to ensure the military security of Italy. The jurisdictional competence of the pretorship as the most “famous” begins to emerge in the late third century BC, which is likely to be linked not only with the increase in the number of praetors, but mainly obviates external threat from the Carthage. It seems to indicate that the jurisdictional competence (civil and criminal) was not assigned to pretorship at the beginning of this office. It appears at least at the end of the third century BC and starts to become predominant among others which were associated with this office in ancient Rome.

Opis:
The article presents the view of the ancient Greeks and Romans on abortion from the ethical and anthropological point of view. The author analyses selected literary works of ancient Greek and Roman authors. The analysis leads to several conclusions. In ancient Greece and Rome children were considered a divine blessing and a treasure, while sterility was regarded as a misfortune and a divine punishment, but the killing of children in their mothers’ wombs was practiced, and even born children were put to death for eugenic reasons. This view was represented by Plato and Aristotle, despite their notion that the fetus was animated as early as the mother’s womb. The Stoics who claimed that the fetus was merely a part of the mother did not see any problem with abortion at every stage of pregnancy. Thus, abortion was practiced, but it also drew condemnation from society. It was perceived as a crime deserving of divine and human punishment, as testified by the works of Aeschylus, Cicero, Ovid, and Juvenal.

Opis:
The action of Norwid's poem Quidam takes place in Rome in Emperor Hadrian's times. The topographic realia of the city, however, do not occupy much space in the text of the work. There are no descriptions of monumental elegant edifices, temples, town squares, or indeed of the way the Roman street looked like. The houses, in which the protagonists' life goes on, are the only exception in this respect; the author made them the background for the events taking place in the poem. The article is an attempt at reconstructing the actual look of Roman houses, in which a lot of scenes that are key ones in the course of the action of the poem take place: of the villas belonging to Artemidor and to Jason Mag, of Sophia's house and of Alexander's son's tenement flat. On the basis of analysis of fragments of Norwid's text that made for these reconstructions, also the specificity was determined of the descriptions of living interiors that consist of a fragmentary character and chariness of the description, privacy and subjective treatment of the scenes, and most of all of emphasizing the function of light in constructing the image of the presented world. In Quidam the author presents an exceptional abundance of observations about light, and the meaning of the motif of light and shadow in the poem exceeds the composition significance discussed in the article and heads for evaluating-symbolic functions. The choice and arrangement of elements that make up the poetic images of interiors in the poem is conditioned, on the one hand by the narration strategy accepted by the author, where the perspective of narrator-witness dominates, and on the other by the specificity of a two-pole relation: man - interior. Both issues are given independent paragraphs in the article, an to conclude the considerations of living spaces attention is paid to the feature that is a peculiar distinctive one for the way the world is presented on the pages of Quidam. What is meant here is a clear turn to the peripheral sphere, additionally reinforced by raising the rank of the role that the fragment plays, which makes Norwid's poem appear to the reader as marked with the mystery of the interior, the person, the city.

Apotropaic behaviours in the Roman system of beliefs required the use of various forms of offerings in order to achieve the expected sacral goal. We may assume, that a full effectiveness of such actions was asserted only by human sacrifice. Along with the development of religious practices the Romans substituted human sacrifice however, in times of serious danger for the Roman community, they would reach for the early sacral experiences. In the system of Roman beliefs extremely important appeared to be the rituals at the turn of the year, which represented the periodic change of the tempus sacrum. Many of the rituals of the turn of the year played the role of lustrative rites, which were extended into practices of liberating the community from sacral miasma and received those rites which represented the destruction of cosmic order and its recovery to the state of primordial chaos. These types of ceremonies might have required a human sacrifice.

Opis:
Karl Christ belonged to the most eminent German historians of the ancient Rome of the latter half of the 20th century. He was particularly interested in the Roman Empire and its place in the European history. This was vividly reflected in his “Geschichte der römischen Kaiserzeit”, which had as many as six editions in Germany. The book conveys the conviction that the history of the Roman Empire constitutes a fundament of contemporary Europe, regardless of the assessment it received over the centuries, which was often very negative. Karl Christ believed that in our times, Roman Empire acquires a new meaning in view of the unification of Europe. Naturally enough, this engenders the question whether a similar process had taken place in the past, whether there is a model of unity and if so, whether it has a chance of being successful. It turns out that the Roman Empire, despite its weaknesses and drawbacks, can be the only point of reference, regardless of the ways in which Europe is “unified”. The observation is also applied in a broader perspective which extends beyond Europe. This is associated with the ongoing globalisation, which in its turn provokes questions about a similar phenomenon in the past, and almost automatically evokes the example of the Roman Empire. Therefore Christ decided to provide the reader with a comprehensive compendium of knowledge of the Roman Empire in a structural-dialectic approach, so as to facilitate the understanding of persistence of the ancient realm and its impact on European history, at the same time enabling one to arrive at its spiritual and cultural roots. Christ wished to acquaint the contemporary inhabitant of our continent with the dialectics of development of the Roman world, its structural evolution, internal social and cultural diffusion and finally the development of culture in all its manifestations. The historian believed that only in this fashion, i.e. not only through history of persons and events, based on sensational elements, can one appreciate the place of the Roman Empire in the developmental sequence of the European continent and its significance for the contemporary cultural shape of Europe. This is also reflected in Christ’s studies on the history of historiography, or the image of the history of ancient Rome and the specificity of the Roman Empire that had been created by various authors over the centuries. This is also where he undertook the effort to evaluate the positions assumed by German historians in the Nazi times and during the Communist era, in the German Democratic Republic. Nonetheless, the studies of history of historiography were only a means to an end, which was to promote the awareness of the importance of the Roman world, or Mediterranean civilisation as a whole, for the contemporary European culture as well as highlight its persisting influence. In Christ’s opinion, it is that “dialogue of a historian with history” which demonstrates to the fullest extent the dialectic bond between antiquity and the present day.słowa klucze

Opis:
The purpose of the paper is to determine the scope of application of Article 4(1), which con- stitutes the general rule of the Rome II Regulation concerning the law applicable to non- contractual obligations. Article 4(1) says that: unless otherwise provided for in this Regula¬tion, the law applicable to a non-contractual obligation arising out of a tort/delict shall be the law of the country in which the damage occurs. However, this rule is subject to numerous exceptions, which the author divided into three groups: 1) exceptions resulting from the structure of Article 4 (Article 4(2) - common habitual residence in the same country, and Article 4(3) - escape clause), 2) exceptions resulting from the whole Regulation (Articles 5 to 9 - separate regulations for different types of tort, Articles 10 to 12 - separate regulations for non-contractual obligations, Article 14 - freedom of choice, Article 16 - overriding man- datory provisions, Article 17 - rules of safety and conduct), 3) restrictions resulting from other acts of EU and international law (the Hague Convention of 4 May 1971 on the Law Applicable to Traffic Accidents). The analysis resulted is the thesis that Article 4(1) of the Regulation applies to a few types of cases (mainly traffic accidents), which, however, happen quite frequently. The author of the paper refers to the provisions of law (analysis of existing legal regulations), as well as to literature based on these provisions, and therefore uses the dogmatic and legal methods of scientific research.

In the presented article, I try to answer the question whether in the Roman state there is a possibility to find the roots of the constitution. In Roman state the constitution as a separate normative act did not exist, the separate jurisdiction of public law was not created, and a constitutional law was primarily based on the custom and political practice. However, in the preserved source material, among others, Cicero’s and Polybius’ statements can be found, which refer to the political issues. On the basis of their analyses, I try to prove that the ideas of constitutionalism and constitution, of course in a substantive sense, date back to the ancient Rome.
To jednak w zachowanym materiale źródłowym można odnaleźć m.in. wypowiedzi Cycerona i Polibiusza odnoszące się swoją tematyką do kwestii ustrojowych.

The founders of the European Union, while signing the Treaties of Rome on 25th March 1957, foresaw that the construction of the united Europe would be accompanied by internal conflicts and crises. They believed that such temporary difficulties would not stop the integration process, but would rather strengthen the feeling of solidarity. However nowadays, when the emerging problems seem to question the future of the EU, it is not sure whether Europe will overcome them being more united indeed. In his article, the author discusses the most important political conditions that influence the debate on the future of the Union, he presents alternative scenarios of the further development of the European integration process in the perspective of the year 2025, and he attempts to set a potential place of Poland in the changing Europe.

Regaining the legion’s standards (insignia) lost by Crassus as a result of his defeat at Carrhae was widely used in the Roman propaganda during the times of Augustus. The event in question had a rich religious significance in addition to its prestige. Referred to in literature as a factor contributing to the emperor’s glory, as the event was also a prerequisite of and a step towards building the Roman reign without borders. After recovering the standards, the success was celebrated not only in the above-mentioned contexts, but also as a military victory that forced the Parthians into surrendering. The occasion was similarly distinguished in numismatics and iconography, and by means of them promoted the connection of the signa with Mars the Avenger, both due to the character of the god’s veneration and origins thereof. Associating the recovered standards with the god could also involve the fulfilment of Caesar’s obligations and one of his promises.

The Catholic Church is an organic community of the Christian faithful who believe in Jesus Christ. Everyone has his place and functions in the Church. The functions of the faithful appear as individual and collegial, and are closely related together. The Pope’s office is an individual function in the Church. Like the Apostle Peter, he was chosen by Christ himself as the first of the Apostles, and so is the Pope today, he is the head of the college of bishops. The Pope, Roman Pontiff is the first successor of the Apostle Peter, the Vicar of Christ, and the pastor of the universal Church on earth. By virtue of his office he possesses supreme, full, immediate, and universal ordinary power in the Church, which he is always able to exercise freely. His authority is the supreme and it consists of legislative, executive and judicial one.

This article depends of beginnings of the Church, when it started to organize itself, with well known historically-theological arguments. Peter confessed Jesus as the Christ and got special place among Apostles. His role matures in young Church community, which is escaping from Jewish religion. Peter tramps the way from Jerusalem thru Antioch to Rome, confirming his appointing to the first among Apostles and to being Rock in the Church. Nascent Rome Church keeps this special Peter’s succession. Clement, bishop of Rome, shows his prerogatives as a successor of Peter. Later, bishop of Cartagena, Cyprian, confirms special role both Peter and each bishop of Rome among other bishops. He also was finding appropriate role for each of them. Church institution, based on Peter and Apostles persists and shows truth of the beginnings and faithfulness to them in nowadays papacy. Methodological elements Presented in the introduction let for the lecture of Gospel and patristic texts without positivistic prejudices presented in old literature of the subject.

European countries share certain features, roots and, to a large extent, history. In the present article attention is paid to the Greek and Roman influence on European civilisation, or “Western Civilisation.” To this day Europeans refer to broadly understood models of ancient culture contained in the concept of polis as a community of equal citizens, in promoting representative bodies, appreciation of elements of merchant culture, rationality and emancipation, the concept of Roman Law that together represent the signa specifica of the Western civilisation. If one adds to this the contribution of Christianity and barbarian tribes, one may reconstruct an adequate representation of the “roots of Europe.”

Opis:
Some specific lexemes in the Old Bulgarian translation of Hippolytus of Rome’s Commentaries on the Book of Prophet DanielThe object of the current research is Talkovanie na Kniga na propok Daniil – the Slavonic version of the Commentaries on the Book of Prophet Daniel (Commentarii in Danielem, CPG 1873) by Hippolytus of Rome (c. 170–235), the earliest and most profound commentaries on this Old Testament book. They were written round 204 and their translation into Old Bulgarian can be counted among the earliest works of Bulgarian literature. The time of the Commentaries’ translation is under discussion, its dating ranging from the last decades of the ninth to the middle of the tenth century. Some linguistic facts of the Commentaries have sporadically been compared with the partial translation of the Book of the Prophet Daniel, included in the Prophetologion. Also, some comparisons have been made between the Slavonic translation of the Commentaries and the so-called Talkovni proroci – a translation of Old Testament books of prophets with commentaries. The analysis is based on a 1519 manuscript of the Commentaries (No. 486 from the Volokolamsk Collection, Russian State Library, Moscow), which follows the tradition of the earlier copies and most profoundly keeps the content of the Commentaries. In addition to morphological particularities, in the text there are many lexical idiosyncrasies, which can facilitate the dating and localization of the translation. Among these lexical markers can be singled out which show more interesting data. Many lexemes can be found which are particular to the early written codices and testify to the antiquity of the translation. For instance, some specific lexemes match with words, used in the Codex Suprasliensis and the First Miscellany of Tsar Simeon (Izbornik of 1073), which shows that the Commentaries are one of the earliest translated works of the Old Bulgarian literature.

Private international law is of great practical importance in the European Union, especially for the proper functioning of the internal market. It has been enacted mainly in the form of the Rome I-Regulation. The question of which national law applies in a cross-border case is often decisive with regard to employment contracts, because national substantive employment laws remain extremely diversified. The first aim of this paper is to outline the major issues relating to conflict-of-laws rules concerning the employment relationship. The second aim is to show the scope of the freedom to choose the law applicable to the employment relationship. The employment relationship, like any contractual relationship, can be subject to the law chosen by the parties but this choicehas limited practical importance. The priority is therefore the protection guaranteed to the employee under the law of the state indicated by objective hyphens.

In 63 BCE the army of the Roman General Pompey the Great invaded ancient Palestine, destroyed part of the Jerusalem temple, and ended the nearly eighty-year-old Hasmonean state. The Romans thereafter ruled ancient Palestine either directly or through a series of client kings. The great Jewish War against the Romans of 66–70 CE was largely an effort to restore independent Jewish rule. The Jewish historian Josephus, who served as a general in this conflict, tells us that a messianic oracle inspired many Jews to take up arms against the Romans.1 This nearly five-year conflict ended with the Roman destruction of Jerusalem and the Jewish temple. Sixty-two years later, Simeon bar Kochba – presumed by many Jews to be the messiah – led Jewish rebels in a second ill-fated revolt against Roman rule. After this failed war, the Jewish community abandoned nationalism and the active hope that a messiah would violently overthrow their oppressors.

The essay is excerpted from a chapter of a book that is currently being written by the author. The working title of the book is Spacery po kościołach rzymskich [Walks through historical churches and temples of Rome] (Wydawnictwo Zeszytów Literackich). The present essay aims at discussing the specific character of the Christian church architecture of the city of Rome that constitutes nodes of a network that has been developing throughout one and a half millennia. Each of the chapters of the book is centered around a particular walk of the town that includes on its way the described churches. The walks cover virtually the whole of the old town and some of the adjacent palaces. The adopted method of presentation is purely personal and has a character of a “Roman diary” — to some extent, the author has been inspired by Promenades das Rome by Stendhal. The diary is, however, a particular guide book on the town for those who want to experience something else that the offer presented by standard guidebooks. Notwithstanding it subjective angle, the book does not interfere in passing the essential historical and artistic knowledge to the reader. Rome appears here to be a singular place, as a personification of one of the most important stages of Western civilization.

Opis:
Wyobrażenia te stanowią nieprzebrane bogactwo do analiz innych sfer historii rzymskiej niż tradycyjnie pojmowane dzieje polityczne imperium. Wskazano także kilka sposobów i metod interpretowania materiału numizmatycznego. Są to: analizy deskryptywne, studia stricte numizmatyczne, analizy stylistyczne, studia historyczne, studia ideologiczne. Trzy pierwsze procedury pozostają podstawowym stopniem poznania sensu wyobrażenia monetarnego, a nawet często są niezbędnym warunkiem przejścia do pogłębionych nad nim studiów historycznych czy ideologicznych.
The article constitutes a brief commentary on the value of Roman coins and medallions as sources of historical cognition. Discussion about the question of the cognitive appeal of ancient Roman coins has a long history of its own. In a somehow a priori manner the author sides with the supporters of the considerable significance of Roman coins and medallions in historical research. In this context, she focuses on the message of numismatic sources contained in inscriptions, and especially in the iconography of the obverse and reverse sides of coins and medallions. These representations constitute an inexhaustible source of information for analyses of spheres of Roman history which are distinct from the traditional concept of the political history of the empire. Moreover, a number of ways and methods of interpretation of numismatic material are indicated. These include the following: descriptive analyses, numismatic studies sensu stricto, stylistic analyses, historical studies, ideological studies. The first three procedures remain to be the fundamental means of the cognition of the sense of a numismatic representation, and in many cases they constitute necessary conditions for the transition to in-depth historical or ideological studies in this subject.

Legal education in Rome and in the modern times
Student legal clinics
Opis:
In the Roman Republic, providing legal advice was treated as the most worthy civil duty. Furthermore, giving legal advice was an indispensable preliminary stage for a later political career. In the period of the Late Roman Empire, the legal profession developed in the form of a corporation of people serving legal advice and pleading before courts. The legal education differed in the period of the Roman Republic and of the Roman Empire. In the former one, education of a young lawyer primarily consisted of practicing under the care and supervision of a master, who was a jurist. As an example of such method of education may serve the career of Marcus Tullius Cicero. Moreover, in the period of Principate, the most significant development of law took place by means of interpretation conducted by jurists. What is more, in the same period, the first law schools were established. At the same time, the need arose to create a textbook introducing students to the legal principles. An example is the Gaius’ Institutiones manual, which presents the Roman law system according to the genera and species divisions. The article concerns various concepts and reforms of legal education in Poland. Furthermore, the article discusses the role that can be played by the student legal clinics, which refers to the ancient models of legal education.

W artykule omówiono książkę Daria Calomino Defacing the Past: Damnation and Desecration in Imperial Rome.
In her review of Dario Calomino’s book Defacing the Past, Anna Anzorge-Potrzebowska presents her reflections on the condemnation of memory inspired by this publication. Calomino’s aim has been to trace the changes introduced to the images of Roman rulers across various media. Those changes could (though not always had to) bear marks of a negative judgment of a given figure for ideological or political reasons. Calomino’s focus is on numismatics. His considerations are supplemented by references to analogous modifications of images of people from the emperors’ entourage and extensive use of sources other than numismatic. This approach places Calomino in a stream of research connected with the condemnation of memory. The way this author conducts the narrative also highlights such issues as the memory culture, the policy of historical memory in the Roman empire. The reviewer deliberately indicates here the area of the empire because Calomino’s book is not devoted exclusively to the Roman perspective.

Pigs were popular farm animals in ancient Rome. They were bred to obtain meat, fat and as sacrificial animals. The ancients believed that pigs were relatively low maintenance and, therefore, recommended keeping at least a few on the farm. The diet of pigs was similar to wild boars’. The Romans preferred to put pigs to pasture, but at the same time, they emphasized that animals should have access to wetlands, food of animal origin and highly diverse plant food. The works of agronomists note numerous plant species that should be native to the regions intended for pig grazing. In the autumn-winter period, the diet of pigs was supplemented by feeding acorns, leaves, chaff, etc. A separate diet based on barley or roasted wheat was used in the case of sows and piglets. The activities of the breeders were aimed at increasing the milk production of sows and ensuring the healthy development of piglets. The way pigs were fed in ancient Rome indicates the considerable knowledge of the breeders of that time. The preferred diet not only provided nutrient-rich food, but it also helped to keep the animals in good shape.

Opis:
The longevity of items and objects of architecture favours changes in their function. What remains is the memory of a place and works of art, which charge a given space with emotions. In human awareness, they lay the foundations of cultural identity. The memory in question has accumulated both in the works of visual art and in writings, delivering a testimony to the transformations of the image of Rome. Therefore, the present article covers the essential artistic and cartographic images of medieval Rome, instances of mythologisation and metamorphoses of space, as well as the city’s history as viewed through the prism of art. The evoked and discussed historic literary sources include Mirabilia Urbis Romae, or a collection of silva rerum tales by Giovanni Rucellai, Il zibaldone quaresimale (a record of a journey to obtain indulgence undertaken in 1450). Literary metamorphoses are interpreted in the context of the findings of art history. In a similar manner, changes in the imagined vision of Rome are laid out on the example of a cycle of 15th-century paintings by Hans Holbein the Elder, Hans Burgkmair and Master who signed with initials L.F. Executed for a monastery in Augsburg, the cycle presented seven station churches and was a kind of biblia pauperum, which adopted the orm of a painted story of a pilgrimage to Rome. The cycle proved to become a fostering and building force behind the process of spiritual metamorphosis of the place carried out by visual means.

Opis:
The main purpose of this study is to determine which conflict of law rules constitute the basis for the search for the law applicable to private-law compensation claims provided for in Article 82 of the GDPR, and whether it is possible to apply the Rome II Regulation on the law applicable to non-contractual obligations in this regard. The authors first set out the main features of the claim, with particular emphasis on those areas where discrepancies may arise at the level of national law. They then qualify the claim as a tortious one, which leads them to pose a question about the applicability of the Rome II Regulation in this case. Special attention is given to the relationship between privacy and personal data protection. The authors argue that these two spheres have become gradually separated from each other and finally, under GDPR, claims for damages for a breach of personal data protection being independent of claims for an infringement of personal rights. Consequently, they assume that the law applicable to a claim under Article 82 of the GDPR should be indicated on the basis of the Rome II Regulation, despite the doubts arising from the exclusion provided for in Article 1.2.g Rome II. If approach is accepted, it will have significant consequences for the harmonisation of the application of the GDPR in the EU Member States, and for achieving the harmonisation of decisions at the level of national law.

Based on the Nordic sculptor community in Rome around 1860, the article discusses candidates that served as inspiration for the fictional Olaf Malm from Telemark, the protagonist in the chapter “Malms historie” in Vilhelm Bergsøe’s key novel Fra Piazza del Popolo (1866). Some of the clues in the text are Malm’s sculptural works. A study of different sources and earlier research together with the candidates’ personality, biography, and travel patterns point in a new direction and strengthen the probability of the Norwegian sculptor Hans Johnsen Budal as being the main model, whereas some traits hint at the Danish sculptor Herman W. Bissen. The candidacy of the sculptor Olaf Glosimodt, which is established in Norway, however, is no longer credible.

During the Middle Ages two dualistic communities were active in Bulgaria and Bulgarian lands – Bogomils and Paulicians. Paulicians, unlike Bogomils, survived as a separate religious sect up to the 17th century, when most of them gradually accepted Catholicism. The detailed reports of Catholic missionaries, priests and bishops shed light on different aspects of their beliefs and practices from the 17th century. The aim of the present article is to propose an explanation of a strange ritual and a legend spread among the Bulgarian Paulicians and recorded in the above-mentioned reports. The thesis of the article is that the legend and the ritual in question refer to the early history of Paulicianism. The ritual is related to syncretic religious notions and goes beyond the scope of dualism. I try to examine the legend and ritual in the context of Paulician history in the Balkans, especially in the context of Paulician belief system, inherited from the early Anatolian Paulicians.

Beginning from the 1st century BC the overwhelming activity of Greek medicine practitioners was transferred to Rome where the most outstanding physicians such as Archagatos, Asclepiades, Temison, Soranos, Athenois, Archigenes and others appeared. In the first centuries of the Roman Empire medical practitioner were exempted from tax obligation and released from the performance of public service duties.

It describes the ministry of primacy as the function given to St. Peter the Apostle and his successors, conferred upon him by Jesus Christ, with the purpose of ensuring the unity and permanence of the Church. The article also addresses the problem of the ecumenical quest, where the pope is the most difficult obstacle in the process of unifying Christianity. The last part of the article presents the praxeological aspect of the ministry of primacy in John Paul II’s pontificate.

Opis:
The article evaluates the spatial aspects of historical crime novels located in Ancient Rome. In particular, it demonstrates the image of the Roman Empire and the functions of space. This classic mise-en-scène is completely subordinated to the genre convention. The space becomes not only a background but also a component of various criminal actions. Unlike in Agatha Christie’s novels, it does not create an idyllic counterpoint to the murderous instincts of Roman citizens. The article concentrates on the form of historical crime fiction, in which all elements are subordinated to the attractiveness of intrigue. However, it also refers to the cognitive ambitions of the historical novel. So the question is what the reader learns about the SPQR of the declining Republic or about Vespasian Rome. First and foremost, it is the vivid image of the metropolis – chaotic, eclectic and vital. It is the world in a state of territorial expansion. Contrary to the assumption shared by Ryszard Koziołek with David Lowenthal that the past is the domain of otherness and that the difference generates incomprehensibility, this picture seems to be extremely familiar and understandable. This is probably due to the fact that the foreignness of “Romanity” has been familiarized in popular culture.

Opis:
The  most important source for the research into weaving products are excavated fabrics. By defining its weave, spin direction of the thread, raw materials used or the employed dyestuff the origin of the fabric may be determined, as well as the loom on which it was weft. Iconography is also greatly useful in the reconstruction of weaving work.  The first loom known inRomewas the vertical warp-weighted loom. This loom, despite offering the possibility of weaving very broad fabrics, quickly went out of use inItaly, probably because weaving on it requires earlier preparation, such as weaving the starting border. Also, we do not know any representation of this type of loom in Roman art.   The vertical two-beam loom resembles the warp-weighted loom, with the exception that the row of weights is replaced with a horizontal beam. It is easier to use, as it does not require preliminary work, so weaving can be begun at once.     We also know representations of this loom in Roman art, which facilitate the reconstruction of its use in antiquity. The most interesting issue is the question of familiarity with the horizontal loom. The written sources do not mention it, nor is there any representation in art that we know of, therefore we must rely on what the fabrics themselves present. However, one may venture a claim that the more complicated the pattern, the greater the likelihood of the horizontal loom having been used.   Furthermore, its knowledge might be attested to by the contents of Diocletian’s edict. One cannot underestimate the evidence for the existence of a horizontal loom, yet it should be assumed that it had not been introduced on a wide scale. Consequently, it appears that the Romans made use primarily of vertical looms, with the prevalence, from the turn of of the two-beam loom.

Filipa Nereusza szlak wędrówki dewocyjnej po siedmiu bazylikach Rzymu mógł mieć swoje źródła w tradycji ludowej, a bez wątpienia wynikał z przywołania i zaadaptowania do nowych warunków pamięci o znanej niegdyś ludycznej w charakterze obrzędowości modlitewnej.
The religious tour of seven Roman basilicas described back in the 16th century by St Philip Neri is thought to have its roots in folk tradition, though undoubtedly was a product of recalling and adapting the memory of an old, ludic prayer tradition to the new circumstances. The itinerary described by the saint listed four major basilicas: St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican, St Paul’s Basilica Outside the Walls, Basilica of St John Lateran, Basilica of St Mary and three minor ones: Basilica of the Cross of Jerusalem, St Basilica of St Lawrence Outside the Walls, and St Sebastian’s Basilica. In 1621 the Krakow printing house of Franciszek Cezary issued a brochure entitled Siedm kościołów krakowskich. Its release was initiated by Marcin Szyszkowski, who had stayed in Rome for many years, where he acquainted himself with the work of St Philip Neri. The moment Szyszkowski became the Krakow bishop, he began to implement elements of post-Trent devotion of the Eternal City in his own diocese. One of such innovations was to initiate the Service of the Seven Krakow Churches, which was granted privileges and indulgences of the Roman pilgrimage trail.

Opis:
"Nowy humanizm" Peccei, stawiając w centrum zagadnienia humanistycznej reorientacji kultury współczesnej, współpracy i pogodzenia z natura, stanowi projekt do dzisiaj aktualny.
Gro Harlem Brundtland's consideration of "sustainable development" is not the first attempt to cover such issues. Among the concepts considered since U Thant's report, special attention must be focused on "new humanism", as developed by Aurelio Peccei. This concept was created during discussions about one of the most important documents constructing an awareness of our responsibility for future: "Limits to Growth", which was published in 1972 as a report by the Club of Rome. It sets a precedent for thinking in terms of "sustainable development". Its ethical message stresses the moral aspects associated with humankind taking a responsible attitude towards the conditions and character of existence on Planet Earth. The crux of Aurelio Peccei's concept is the emphasis it places on the need to connect material changes with the reorientation of human sensitivity and spirituality. Peccei's "new humanism", at the centre of which lies the issues of humanistic reorientation of contemporary culture, cooperation and conciliation with nature, is still valid.
