Opis:
Social pedagogy constitutes a part of general pedagogy, so, in order to understand what this particular branch of pedagogy is, one ought first of all to clarify the meaning of the notion “pedagogy”. The concept has two basic meanings: “theoretical” one and “practical” one. In the “theoretical” sense, it means the theory of upbringing and thus the science of education, whose purpose is understanding the process of upbringing as well as the factors which influence that process. In the “practical” sense, what we understand by “pedagogy” is to sum total of all the educative activities employed for the purpose of steering the process of education in the desired direction. Speak- ing about pedagogical activities, we do not, of course, deal with activities from the field of education theory, as that would be contradiction in terms, but with the body of practical skills employed in everyday work by practical pedagogues.

This article addresses some forecasts and requirements regarding the development of social peda- gogy in the near future. Social pedagogy is a theoretical and practical discipline, and if we want to think about its future, we need to address each of these aspects separately. Developing theory in such disciplines as, for example, social pedagogy, of course, is of importance only on condition that this theory can be realized in practice. It should be borne in mind that the possibility of practicing theory (social policy or social work) depends on a number of factors to which social pedagogy has no influ- ence. In the context of reflection on the future of social pedagogy, this distinction between theory and practical needs and the possibilities of its implementation seems to be essential, as there may be a situation in which the intense development of theory will not be accompanied by an intensive practi- ce in practice.

The first is the special needs pedagogy, which has seen a dispute between the enthusiasts of institutional and social integration of the disabled with people, communities and institutions dominated by those within a given norm. The second is characteristic of the critical pedagogy and sociology – concerns people and social groups who are culturally and socially excluded and marginalised, both overtly and covertly.

In the article is taken the issue of condition of pedagogy as a research field and academic discipline. Many critical researchers and analytics arrives at a conclusion that there is a crisis of: school, higher education, upbringing, teacher’s role, educational system etc. Thus, we face common demand of changes, adaptation, reorganization, modernization, emancipation of/for/towards that what is placed within the field of pedagogy. Fundamental questions about the scientific nature and paradigmaticness of pedagogy are being moved to the further plan and giving up place to the questions about: the state of the pedagogy/pedagogics, the quality of problems considered by it and its ability/readiness to solve those problems.

Foucault’s concept of gov-ernmentality is used (Foucault, 1988) and explains how these models of governance result in peda-gogues altering their conception of what a good pedagogue is and what they do. The article then argues for the existence of a correlation between implementation of models of governance and an influence on pedagogues’ judgement.

This article will present some forecasts and postulates regarding the development of social pedagogy in the near future. Social pedagogy is both a theoretical and practical discipline, so if we reflect on its future, then we should discuss these two aspects separately. Obviously, working on the development of theories in disciplines such as social pedagogy makes sense only on the condition that these theories can be then implemented in practice, but it must be also borne in mind that the possibility of influencing the practice by the theory (e.g. social policy or social work) depends on a number of factors on which social pedagogy has no factual impact. Hence, in the context of a discussion on the future of social pedagogy, the distinction between theory and practical needs as well as possibilities of its implementation seems very much justified, because there is always the possibility that an intense development of theory might not be accompanied by equally intense activities in the area of practice.

This article aims at reconstruction of crucial for pedagogy of emancipation notions associated with colonisation and decolonisation. This objective includes both literally and metaphor meanings of colonisation and decolonisation used by P. Freire in his philosophy of education. Thus I will present modified by P. Freire conception of closed society as a relic of colonial society and I will also present his notion of colonisation and decolonisation of minds as an objective action for basic literacy during decolonisation processes in Africa in the seventies. The main reason of such purpose of this text is that colonisation is the crucial point and the main cause of emancipation in Freire’s conception of social movements in general and popular education in particular. On the other hand decolonisation is an archetypal form of emancipation, thus taking into account present social inequalities theory of P. Freire is still totally valid.

Pedagogy Montessori
Opis:
The latest issue of “Elementary Education in Theory and Practice” is devoted to the pedagogical thought of Maria Montessori, one of the greatest innovators of 20th century education. Her pedagogical concepts, although designed over 100 years ago, seem to carry an unusual freshness, originality and intellectual depth, inspiring new generations of teachers, researchers and parents. As Clara Tornar has noticed, the unique cognitive potential of this pedagogy is based on interrelations between the method of scientific observation and its consequent development and improvement, based on rigidly precise scientific criteria – rationality and objectivity. M. Montessori perceived the classroom learning environment as an exclusive “psychological laboratory”. Not from the behaviourist perspective, however, not as a place where, in rigorously controlled conditions, a researcher is activating a stimulus to induce the proper, preplanned and expected reaction of the child. On the contrary, her vision of a psychological laboratory built and practiced in Casa dei Bambini was based on three cyclical phases, representing the methodology of research in action: designing a learning environment prepared for exercising free choice – the place for empowering the child, triggering the free expression of the child’s psychological needs, inner potential and developmental tendencies; methodically observing the child’s reactions to this environment and the conditions for free action; and, finally, reorganizing and transforming this environment to make it serve better to the observed needs and possibilities of the child, to make the stimuli included in this environment facilitators for the child’s development, for constructing his/her own developmental potential.

In the first part of the article, the author presented the difference between postcolonialism and neo-colonialism in relation to people with disabilities and in Disability Studies. Afterward, he highlighted the illusory nature of research and, above all, educational activities in favor of people with disabilities. He argues that in the case of this group of people, we are dealing with neo-colonial pedagogy rather than a postcolonial one.

The article is a modified and updated version of an excerpt from the book entitled: 'Invisible environment' (Witkowski, 2014) published in Polish language by Impuls. Hermeneutic approach in pedagogy refers to two following areas: to methodology of research and to theory of education. Hermeneutics denied the objectivity of knowledge in the humanities. Actually the purpose of hermeneutic pedagogy is not the search for evidence supporting the objective notions, but the search for legitimate interpretations in the sphere of educational reality. The aim of this paper is to define the foundational methods of such legitimization. Statements proper for hermeneutic pedagogy are not objective in the positivistic sense; they should have the virtue of intersubjectivity and be open to verification. Methods of legitimization ought to embrace various understandings of educational reality in the form of cultural text and social behavior. The other field of hermeneutic research in pedagogy is the hermeneutic theory of education. It is focused on the category of understanding as the ground of education. In this case the pedagogy’s aim is to balance the subjectivism rooted in the ontology of understanding. It may be achieved through the emphasis laid on intersubjectivity of understanding, both in its dialogical and communicative aspects.

The aim of the study is articulated in the title. The author is reconstructing Kantian philosophy and pedagogic, the thesis of postmodernism and post-modern pedagogic and indicates the relationships and differences of those two systems. Both Kant and the Baden-based neo-Kantians enabled the emancipation of the humanities. The Kantian model of pedagogy was the basis for pedagogic directions, belonging to the meta-theory of humanistic education and critical pedagogy, especially the postmodern one. There are clear links with Kantian ideas of pedagogy, the way to capture the role of dignity, knowledge and freedom in the morality of a human being. There are also significant differences: Kant did not include to his pedagogy social, political and pluralistic questions, which are so important in postmodern pedagogy.

Economic recession in its simplest explication is the decline in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of any country. For over 25 years, recession set in Nigeria in 2015 with the oil price adjustment that affected global economy. Its effect on the country’s export has been punishing, seeing export and government revenues decline rapidly. This is due to some factors that include the fact that oil is Nigeria’s main source of foreign exchange earnings and government and financial revenue; insurgency in the North East of Nigeria and the agitating activities of the Niger/Delta region which has seen Chevron and some oil prospecting companies, the straightening of dollar which has made the Naira of less value. The study determine the extent to which the recession has affected students of school age. It describes the process of Theatre for Development (TFD) in the University of Calabar International Demonstration Secondary School (UCIDSS) as a means of evaluating the students’ knowledge of economic recession and how the recession has affected their studies and career choice. The issues discussed here came from the students, enabling them develop critical reasoning that will help them rekindle their ambitions as well as eliciting their knowledge of changes around their environment. Methodologically, Semi-Structured Interview, TFD and other participatory methodologies like FGD and playmaking were used and for those students who may have issues discussing their views in problem, Key informant Interview was applied.

John Amos Comenius belongs to the most important thinkers in European theology, philosophy, and pedagogy. His thoughts and ideas, contained in numerous works, over the centuries have been the subject of research and study by authors all over the world and have been the basis for the development of pedagogy as a science, as well as many modern understandings about education. We especially emphasize pedagogical work Great Didactic (lat Didaktica magna) as his most significant and famous work, where is presented the whole educational system and organization of teaching, which many parts are still applied today. The most previous authors who deal with analyzing the Comenius thought, in his works mentioned comeniology, but as a phenomenon, he doesn't have clearly definition and content. Today, scientists tend to point out the need for the existence of comeniology as a science. The aim of this paper is to analyze the pedagogical thoughts and ideas of John Amos Comenius from the aspect of applying his original ideas in contemporary didactics and methodology of pedagogy. For the purpose of this study, we used the method of theoretical analysis and the historical method with the technique of analyzing the content of available pedagogical sources. The content of this paper leads us to emphasize the significant influence of Comenius on developing and the existence of methodology of pedagogy and to point out the methodology of pedagogy as a possible subject area of the comeniology as a science.

Opis:

Opis:
Summary
Anti-pedagogy is a revolutionary approach to bringing up children, in which they are treated like adults. Just like them, they bear the consequences of their own deeds and experience self-responsibility. The opposite of anti-pedagogy is „black pedagogy”, which turns out to be a controversial current of research, because it assumes that children should be submissive to adults. Heinrich Hoffmann in a collection of poems for children entitled The Golden Wand published in 1845 showed the rules of its operation. The protagonists of these terrifying stories are children who were severely punished for „misdeeds”. It is unacceptable for a contemporary pedagogue to apply penalties for behaviours that are typical of a young man. A pedagogue, being a mentor, should show the right way through conversation, instead of punishing.

The subject of this analysis is an attempt to reflect on the pedagogical system of Antoni Makarenko as a pedagogue of street children. Just as the street peddlers of today worked with children whose negative and afflicted relationships with the world have led to an attitude of distrust and dislike. When analyzing his concept, I referred to the thought he had made in “Pedagogical Poem”. Confronting the idea against the views of modern street pedagogues, I tried to answer the questions: what does Makarenko share with people working today with this category of children? How much of his ideas worked out almost a century ago are the inspiration for modern street pedagogues? Makarenko, like the street pedigreers of today, was focused on building contacts, appreciated the significance of the meeting, tried to answer real problems and needs of homeless youth. What distinguishes modern street pedagogy from the Makarenko pedagogical system is its critical character. Makarenko’s pedagogy, due to ideological dominance (which was not discussed in the pedagogical activity aimed at shaping the planned political consciousness of the charges), lost its emancipatory character.

Traditional pedagogy of religion, although strongly differentiated internally, is usually situated on the junctures between pedagogical and theological normativity. This modality of research allows one to identify paradigmatic analogies in relation to the current of revaluation of religion and phenomenology of religion in contemporary religious studies. In these traditions, represented e.g. by Mircea Eliade, Gerardus van der Leeuw or Rudolf Otto, involve the assumption that the common phenomenon of religion in all available forms and manifestations is an element of the natural and essential human experience. This experience remains internalized as a manifestation of the transcendent spiritual reality of homo religiosus. Drawing on the categories of normativity and non-normativity in the study of pedagogy of religion, on the categories of orthodoxy and heresy as well as non-theological theories of contemporary religious studies, the paper poses the question concerning the possibility of going beyond the pedagogical-theological paradigm in the study of pedagogy of religion as a subdiscipline of general pedagogy.

The African-American scholar bell hooks is a well known figure in the Western academic milieu. This article makes an attempt at presenting the model of engaged pedagogy represented in hook’s works and her public appearances. This is done by highlighting the issue of subjective experience in the educational setting. Hook’s concept of race and gender is brought to attention to present the aforementioned issue within the broader context of her socio-cultural concepts she is known for. The outcome of this reconstruction shows us that the model of engaged pedagogy is developed by hooks into a wide set of postulates of structural change of the American schooling system, as well systems in other parts of the world. Therefore, it seems plausible to put her works within the tradition of critical pedagogy as found in the works of Paulo Freire and others.

Phenomenology has been well-received in pedagogy from the very beginning. With direct reference to Husserl, Aloys Fischer calls for a Descriptive Pedagogy. Only on the basis of a close description of educational processes similar to the phenomenological reduction can the educational sciences rediscover their actual subject matter. In this article the author traces the development of phenomenological thought in educational theory with a special focus on the notions of corporeality and negativity. As a necessary condition of perception in general, corporeality constitutes an important factor in the structural being-to-the-world of the human being. Apart from being able to sense its surroundings the body can also be perceived as part of these surroundings. Due to this double role, the subject opens up to foreign influences and negativity. Thus, the other plays an important role in the constitution of the identity of the subject. Through corporeality, a sphere of intersubjectivity is opened up. A recapitulation of Käte Meyer-Drawe’s Pedagogy of Inter-Subjectivity and Wilfried Lippitz’ Theory of Bildung and Alterity shows how these thoughts can be made useful for pedagogical discussion. Hereby, sociality and alterity prove to be foundational categories for educational settings in general. Finally, the author gives an outlook on current developments in phenomenological pedagogy.

A father’s presence is important and necessary, and almost impossible to replace in the upbringing process. The father gives his child such stimuli and patterns in his social and moral development which his mother is not able to offer him. In connection with functioning in various social groups every human being fulfils definite social roles. The roles of parents and children belong to such roles. However, they are not something stable and have undergone many transformations over the centuries. The father’s role is unique. First of all, he is supposed to be a tutor. His task is, similarly to the biological mother who gives birth to her child, to “give birth” to him as a new creature by upbringing. A father’s role is to create an atmosphere of safety in the family, and participate in all aspects of the family life.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the transformations of the teacher’s roles in the context of the alternative education. The idea of the ‘pedagogy of the oppressed’ by Paolo Freire has been presented in details. A short outline of the book’s history has been given. The social and political roots of the education as the tool  of oppression have been shown. The banking concept of education has been criticized as the one that contradicts the idea of freedom and democracy. The author reinforces the idea that democratic changes of education gave start to different alternative visions of the teacher’s role, which were expressed through different approaches to the education that constituted branches of the alternative pedagogy. As it is shown in the article, antipedagogy, critical pedagogy, Gestalt pedagogy, emancipation pedagogy, transgressive pedagogy questioned the  teacher’s traditional role of being the only source of knowledge able to pass it to students as objects of teaching. Different changes in the teacher’s roles have been demonstrated: the neglected one (in antipedagogy), the one of the transformational intellectual assisting in criticizing everything (in critical pedagogy), the thoughtful facilitating partner (in Gestalt pedagogy), the child’s self-actualization supporter (emancipation pedagogy), the dialogue learning organizer (transgressive pedagogy). The author draws the conclusion that the teacher’s role has been transformed with the stress transfered from teaching to learning; when both the teacher and the student are partners in their reciprocal learning.

The category that is reinterpreted in relation to the modern theories of the production of the common and the new forms of being together that thus produced, is Makarenko’s notion of the “collective”. Based upon this, I propose an idea of a collectivizing pedagogy, that is a remedy for the current neoliberal delegitimization of all forms of common identity, and the latter’s effects such as incapability of imagining (and consequently teaching about) the possibility of a communal, solidary action.

In the work of Janusz Gnitecki one can point to several areas of research that fall within the notion of the philosophy of education – anthropology and pedagogical axiology, methodology of pedagogical research, educational comparative studies. In his view pedagogy receives a specific interpretation according to which it is a meta-reflection and meta-narrative covering the space of human existence and essence and thus it falls entirely within the philosophy of education. An important contribution of this philosopher and teacher is the development and application of the ambivalence category in pedagogical research, to which this article is devoted.

The basic determinant of a public school as a social and educational environment should be the promotion of social inclusion and cohesion. In most countries of the European Union, religious instruction is a subject of school education. These countries adopt different models in terms of legal legitimacy, organization and curriculum. The idea of introducing religion as a compulsory subject appeared in Poland. Non-public schools, i.e. a school run by social, religious or privat units, have the right to special curricular solutions. A public school, i.e. a school free of charge and available to every student, regardless of their worldview, should conduct religious education in the spirit of dialogue and social cohesion as an element of general education. This article presents a comparative analysis of religious education in public schools from the perspective of the relationship between religious particularism and general education. I assume that in individual countries both religious particularism and general education may be defined differently in the context of school education.

Opis:
Paul Natorp, John Dewey and Sergius Hessen are usually considered to represent three different philosophical and pedagogical doctrines developed at the turn of the Twentieth century. These are, respectively: neo‐Kantianism, pragmatism and humanistic pedagogy widely rooted in Wil‐ helm Dilthey’s philosophy. Contrary to this common classification, Hessen himself described his own concept of pedagogy as an applied philosophy as a continuation of Natorp’s thought. However, Hessen also noted that an approach very similar to his one can be found (with some restrictions) in John Dewey’s theory. In this case, the fundamental issue is to determine the relationship between philosophy and pedagogical theory and practise. The main part of this article will identify the specificity of this relationship: the specificity implied by the concept of pedagogy understood as applied philosophy. The concept of pedagogy, understood as an applied philosophy in its theoretical and practical aspects, is the basis for critical reconstruction of social life in general. It is the opinion shared by all three philosophers that this type of reconstruction should be based on the communal dimension of basic social interactions, that is, on the communal dimension of work. The only way for the renewal of a different form of social life leads through regaining through them an essential communal dimension of human work. All three authors agreed that to regain the communal dimension of human work by another form of social interaction would only be possible when certain conditions are present; that is, when work will be permeated by individual creativity. The presence of such conditions shall be ensured by the educational community. Thus, the educational community should be a starting and end point for any critical social reconstruction as well as for the pedagogy understood as an applied philosophy.

I would like to present the general outlook on dominant tendencies within educational studies and shortly introduce my analysis in the context of so called „turning point” of educational discourse in the second half of XX century. I would like to propose to look at that moment of our actual cultural and educational field through two dominant perspectives and metaphors on which two different pedagogies are grounded. I would like to introduce two domianant metaphors within the educational field and the new tendencies, shortly how the educational studies shift from the „survival pedagogy” to the „spiritual pedagogy”. In general, this atriculations founded in the mindfull critics of educational practices undermine the cultural shift which is based on the process of abandom the tradition values, and the civilisation trends of development which generated the actual shape of culture to be axhausted. The great positivismproject was adjected by the new generations of educators with new and fresh approach to the educational problems. At that moment it’s clear that we stand before the creation the new, alternative vision of the social world and culture in general. I would like to present the changes of that social process on the example XX-century pedagogy, which I hope is touched by that cultural transformation. I would like to concentrate on the educational discourse as a econcrete area of such cultural shift. It’s rather difficult to recognize the whole field of that revolutionary and alternative movement within our culture. In my text I would like to show the process of transition from „survival pedagogy” into „spiritual pedagogy”. As we simply know from the poststructural perspective each of educational interpretation operates in the social contexts has own definition of the aims, functions and tesks of education. After Michel Foucault works we can say that each of the educational discourse and interpretation is grounded in the cultural power/knowledge forces. The new generation of educatorsproposed new approach towards social analyses of edacational aims and destination. In that movement the main aim of edacation is to build identity of pupils. There are of course many researchers shared that view on edacational discourse eg. Zbyszko Melosik, Tomasz Szkudlare, Lech Witkowski, Zbigniew Kwieciński in Poland ( to give only representative examples) and Henry Giroux and Peter McLaren in the United States. They proposed the new approach towards the understanding of edacation destination and obligations and broke the traditional interpretation. They rejected the traditional inerpretation of „formingthe reason” or „excercising the reason” as the main goal of education towards the popular culture and sensses. And they based their interpretations on that aspect of identity construction process. I would like to propose in my text general outlook at the cultural shift within educational discourse as the transtition from the metaphor of „survival pedagogy” towards the „spiritual pedagogy”. These metaphors also determined two different perspectives and approachesto education. I wolud argue that these perspectives are based on the two different antopological visions and determine different pedagogies.

W ramach tekstu, w odwołaniu do myśli posthumanistycznej i nowego materializmu (Braidotti, Barad, Latour), podkreślających relacyjny charakter rzeczywistości, sprawczość nie-ludzi oraz ograniczenia humanizmu, podjęto próbę postawienia pytania o nieantropocentryczną pedagogiczność lasu.
Within the framework of the text, with reference to posthumanist thought and new materialism (Braidotti, Barad, Latour) emphasizing the relational character of reality, the causality of non-humans and the limitations of humanism, an attempt is made to raise the question of a non-anthropocentric pedagogy of the forest. The question, then, is how the forest can be understood by educational theory and research that does not presuppose an understanding of education as a specifically human activity and does not understand non-humans as contexts, tools or obstacles to this activity, but as actors characterized by pedagogical agency. To this end, the question of anthropocentric forest pedagogy was first raised and some limitations of such an understanding were pointed out. Next, a non-anthropocentric understanding of the forest and related challenges for pedagogy were pointed out.

The study presents an assessment of the achievements and problems of intercultural pedagogy as an important educational (sub)discipline, which has been developing intensively in Poland – particularly since the 1990s. Against the background of a crisis of multicultural education, a new suggestion was presented aimed at overcoming its drawbacks in the form of the theoretical assumptions and practical solutions of intercultural education. However, understanding and accepting intercultural education depends on many factors – e.g., historical experiences, the developmental level of societies and the socio-political system. This necessitates presenting the essence of intercultural education as well as formulating its message both in Poland and worldwide.

The author tackles the problem of the new quality of pedagogy in postmodern Poland. It is expressed in the absence of “one” theory, one meta-language which is used to describe and explain basic concepts and processes. Moreover, it creates theoretical foundations for the development of detailed pedagogical sciences. Each attempt to set up a universal project or meta-narration becomes an unreasonable interpretation of phenomena or theories and the will to gain power. None of individual interpretations can be superior to any others. There are not any “better” or “worse” theories. I reveal new approaches to pedagogy as: – science of pedagogical sciences (metapedagogy); – comparative pedagogical thoughts; – meta-science, or the science of all sciences about upbringing and education.

Opis:
The first International Social Pedagogy Conference took place February 22-24, 2018 in Puebla, Mexico. The conference, Social Pedagogy and Social Education: Bridging Traditions and Innovations, was hosted by Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) in partnership with the Social Pedagogy Association, ASU, REMPES, and Ceiba. The conference hosted over 350 participants from 17 countries and offered presentations in English, Spanish and Portuguese, representing a wide variety of topics which reflect many of the diverse areas encompassed by social pedagogy research and practice. REPORT In 2011, the first social pedagogy masters program in North America - a Master of Art in Social and Cultural Pedagogy - was approved by Arizona State University for the School of Social Transformation in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. Within two years students in that program created a graduate organization, SCP-GO (Social and Cultural Pedagogy Graduate Organization), to connect with each other, organize events, and represent students’ needs and interests to the faculty. As the first of these graduates transitioned from University into a variety of careers and post-graduate studies, a need presented for a professional association to facilitate connections in North America between practical and theoretical pedagogues. Thus, the Social Pedagogy Association was created in 2015. The Social Pedagogy Association (SPA) brings together practitioners, academics, students and others to exchange experiences and to share knowledge and resources about social pedagogy theory, research and practice. The SPA strives to be an inclusive organization that believes in the importance of the free flow of ideas and scholars for the advancement of research, theory and educational practices. We are here to encourage scholarly interaction, collaboration, and debate from diverse intellectual perspectives and countries of origin by bringing together practitioners, academics, students and others to exchange experiences and to share knowledge and resources about social pedagogy theory, research and practice. (O’Neil, 2015) The SPA recognized a disconnect between academia and practice. While academics often engage in interdisciplinary study, and many practitioners refer to the works and successes of others in their fields, there is often a gap in communication between research and practice. As social pedagogues we bear a responsibility to ensure that gap is minimized as effectively as possible. As the academic discipline and practical application of social pedagogy expands, it is necessary that theoretical and practical pedagogues communicate and work in tandem. In 2004, prominent social pedagogue, Henry Giroux, wrote: I think too many cultural studies theorists are remiss in suggesting that pedagogy is primarily about schools and, by implication, that the intersection of cultural studies and pedagogy has little to do with theorizing the role pedagogy might play in linking learning to social change outside of traditional sites of schooling. Pedagogy is not simply about the social construction of knowledge, values, and experiences; it is also a performative practice embodied in the lived interactions among educators, audiences, texts, and institutional formations. Pedagogy, at its best, implies that learning takes place across a spectrum of social practices and settings. (Giroux, 2004, p.61) Rooted deeply in northern Europe and South America, the field of Social Pedagogy is growing and changing as it spreads and develops in the UK, Central America, and, most recently, North America. The discipline has more than 150 years of history as both an interdisciplinary academic field of inquiry and a field of practice that is situated in the intersection of three areas of human activity: education, social work, and community development (Schugurensky, 2011). Hans Thiersch defined the role of social pedagogue thus: The role of the social pedagogue is to help people to critically analyze their problems, reflecting on the social causes of the individual problems and to find options for successful everyday life. The focus is connecting help for the individual with political action in the context of social justice and well-being, while recognizing social and political resources. (Schugurensky, 2014, p. 9) It is of utmost importance that pedagogues ‘across a spectrum’ listen to one another and aid each other in this critical analysis and reflection. This need for an increase in communication was recognized by members and partners of the SPA soon after its founding. “As a critical practice, pedagogy’s role lies not only in changing how people think about themselves and their relationship to others and the world, but also is energizing students and others to engage in those struggles that further possibilities for living in a more just society.” (Giroux, 2004, p. 64) As pedagogues, we must also energize and engage one another. There is possibly no greater power than that inherent in the exchange of ideas and culture. In 2017, Jan Rothuizen and Lotte Harbo reminded us that “Bridge-building means changing society and not just working with care but also with community development, so as to address the wider and systematic aspects that affect the marginalized groups” (Rothuzian, p.18). It was with this idea of bridging connections and supporting one another that the SPA organized and planned the first International Social Pedagogy Conference which took place February 22-24, 2018 in Puebla, Mexico. The conference, Social Pedagogy and Social Education: Bridging Traditions and Innovations, was hosted by Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) in partnership with the Social Pedagogy Association, ASU, REMPES, and Ceiba. The intention of this conference was to bridge differences within the theories of academia and help to unite those theories with the experiences of field-work practitioners, an important connection that is all-too-often overlooked. The conference was held with the intention of bringing together the various studies and practices of social pedagogy and social education around the world. The conference welcomed any and all researchers and practitioners whose work falls into the realm of social or critical pedagogies and social education, to include topics such as: refugee education, cultural pedagogy, the formation/education of social educators and social workers, technology and social education, pedagogical theory, social pedagogy and social education in schools, and more. The conference hosted over 350 participants from 17 countries and offered presentations in English, Spanish and Portuguese, representing a wide variety of topics which reflect many of the diverse areas encompassed by social pedagogy research and practice. By forging initial connections between researchers and practitioners, we hope to continue to find and increase ways in which these connections can influence and impact the growth of social pedagogy and social education around the world. The hope of the SPA is that we continue to identify tension fields, share successes and challenges internationally within the field and research, and come to an understanding of social pedagogy advised and shaped by our varied cultures, experiences, and educations. The SPA will be partnering in June of 2020 with the University of Central Lancashire (CLAN) to host the second International Social Pedagogy Conference in Larnaka, Cyprus. We are excited to see the unification of ideas and knowledge and look forward to a future of partnership with pedagogues around the world.

The goal of this article is to present the main theoretical and methodological assumptions of an international research project on the educational contexts of cultural resistance in Poland and Portugal. In this article, we will first analyse, in a resumed way, the various lines of thought related to cultural resistance, radical democracy critical pedagogy; then we will present an example of a critical pedagogy, the punk pedagogy, in order to demonstrate that the reality we describe is not only present at the abstract level; then, and finally, we proceed with the research methodology that we intend to trigger in order to analyse the educational contexts of cultural resistance in Portugal and Poland. In this article we are talking about two countries with very dissonant stories. Even today, in the context of membership of the European Union, the course of both countries seems to diverge. However, we argue that the comparison between these two distant and different countries may open new perspectives on the contexts of cultural resistance and critical pedagogy. Like the example of punk, these practices of cultural resistance can serve as a way to empower active civic and political participation, going beyond the simple act of voting every four years and promoting a radical democracy.

The ultimate goal of this paper is to investigate the pedagogical views and attitudes of Moroccan high school teachers towards Method-based pedagogy. It attempts to investigate the extent to which teachers are satisfied with and committed to conventional methods. Also, the paper aims at investigating the alternative practices teachers are more likely to resort to in order to compensate for the limitations of conventional methods. In addition to this, a further objective of this study is to investigate the extent to which pre-service teacher training programs in Morocco are aware of the challenges of the post-method era. This is measured through their awareness of the requirements of the post-method era and the extent to which teacher trainers concern themselves with equipping the prospective teachers with the necessary skills to be reflective researchers and responsibly eclectic teachers. In this respect, the data collection instruments opted for in the present study ranged from quantitative to qualitative in nature. The findings reveal that the vast majority of Moroccan high school teachers (P=78%) are dissatisfied with conventional methods and - (P=96%) of them- are not committed to one or two teaching methods. The vast majority report that they resort to an eclectic approach to language teaching due to the impracticality and inflexibility of the established methods. Most teachers (P=80%) admit that they use a random eclecticism as they rely mainly on their intuitive rather than principled judgments. In this regard, interviews with teacher trainers and supervisors also reveal that pre-service teacher training programs in Morocco limit themselves only to training the prospective teachers to use methods and approaches without training them to be responsibly eclectic. The findings also show that the majority of teachers do, to some extent, know about classroom research; however, they - (P=72%) of them- have never conducted it inside their classrooms. The teachers (P=57%) attribute this to the lack of financial support and to the fact that they are not well-trained to conduct research inside their classrooms. Finally, the results of this study imply many suggestions of which we mention: the introduction of a post-method pedagogy in the Moroccan pre-service teacher training programs, equipping teachers with the methodological tools necessary as well as supporting them financially to conduct classroom-research for the purpose of constructing teaching methodologies that suit the needs to the very specific students and contexts within which they work.

The motto of the article signals that ‘the great cultural change’ on the turn of the 20th century is going to be the context for reflections on the identity of pedagogy. The problem of identity has always been controversial; however, it is particularly visible in the circumstances of change. In the article I attempt to weaken the argumentation used by the advocates of marginalising that problem in an academic discourse in order to remind statements of leaders of Polish pedagogy encouraging undertaking the problems of the identity of pedagogy. I also try to convince the reader that it is possible to form important questions about the new connection between pedagogy and educational practice in the context of a discourse about the identity of pedagogy.
