Opis:
The peach (Prunus persica [L.] Batsch) is a tree native to the region known today as Northwest China, where its fruits were known around 2000 BC. Inhabitants of the Mediterranean Area came into contact with the peach probably between the 6th and 4th century BC thanks to the contacts with Persian Empire. In the western part of the Mediterranean Region the peach appeared later (ca. 1st c. AD). In the period under study there were many varieties of the peach, and they were eaten in many different ways – e.g. raw, dried, boiled etc. They could be consumed without any other ingredients, or as an element of more complicated dishes. Ancient and early Byzantine authors, who wrote their treatises between the 1st and 7th c. AD, and dealt with medicine (Dioscorides, Pliny the Elder, Galen, Oribasius, Aetius of Amida, Paul of Aegina, Athimus and others), described dietetic properties of a peach with details. Moreover, they left some information about a medical use of this fruit. This aspect of their works is an element of a wider and well-known phenomenon, i.e. an important role of all groups of aliments in the ancient art of healing.

The following article attempts to address two issues. The first one concerns dietetic characteristic of barley flour, which was a very popular product used both in Graeco-Roman and Byzantine culinary art and medicine. The second one deals with the therapeutic role of this product: different forms of remedies made from it, its effects on the human body, and various health problems cured by an application of medicines containing aleuron krithinon. To address these questions we study ancient and Byzantine Greek medical sources written between the 1st and 7th century AD by Dioscurides, Galen, Oribasius, Aetius of Amida, Alexander of Tralles, Paul of Aegina, and the anonymous author of the treatise entitled De cibis.

Medicine, in the ancient time an empirical, often mysterious knowledge, aimed to help suffering people. It developed quickly and massively entering the way of scientific research in the last few centuries. Recently, it has shifted from natural towards social sciences to fulfill the demands and expectations of societies. Highly sophisticated and expensive tools and very complicated health care systems result in continuous reforms in teaching professionals. The inadequately controlled progress in medical practice creates dangers to social health and safety, surprisingly raising dissatisfaction and mass contestation. Such situation generates the need for reasonable health policy in steering scientific research to the most burning social problems instead to those most ambitious, fascinating, and promising biggest financial profit. That is why energetic movements for high level of ethics in scientific research and among health care professionals has been called for all over the world. Further development in medical sciences and progress in medical practice will certainly continue and both are highly desirable, however they should never disregard the rank of social needs which in various countries may be different.

The demand for native medicinal plants has gained much attention among the developing tropical regions of the world in the last decades owing to their relative affordability, acclaimed efficacy and perceived user safety. The rise in the prevalence of chronic diseases, potential treatments and possible cures has led not only to increased patronage, but also to their combination with conventional medicine for better health care delivery and speedy recovery. In this present study, factors influencing these developments were examined. Hence, interview and semi-structured questionnaires were randomly administered among 104 respondents in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. Civil servants, self employed (Herb sellers, traditional medicine practitioners and farmers), unemployed (aged people) and students. Based on the responses obtained, 85% of the respondent stated that they make use of herbs, while 12.5% disagreed and 1.9% was undecided. However, 50%, 38% and 14%, agreed, disagreed and were undecided, respectively to combining herbs and orthodox medicine. Occupation was shown to significantly influence the level of herbal usage and its combination with orthodox medicine. The study revealed the high dependence on herbs and the combined of the use of the same with orthodox medicine, with occupation playing a significant role in each case. These observations underscore the importance of traditional medicine as a subsystem of good health delivery and that a double practice exists among health care seekers.

This paper aims to explore two opposite concepts of the human body – according to conventional medicine and according to alternative (holistic) medicine – and to show the mutual interpenetration of these two concepts in the modern world. Conventional medicine sees the body as an endless collection of symptoms spread all over its surface. It presents the body as a way of localizing pain, so in the biomedical discourse the body appears as a place of defining and describing pain. It is located in individual parts, organs, limbs, etc. Alternative medicine looks at the human body from the perspective of structural, chemical and psychological unity, which constantly adapts to the changing conditions of the external environment. It sees illness not as a disorder of one particular organ or system, but as a disorder of the whole organism. However, regardless of the clear distinction between these two concepts in the legal, scientific and ethical spheres and regardless of the general medicalisation of the modern world, these two approaches to the human body are simultaneously accepted by patients.

Honey is the focus of many research projects for its varied biological activities. It is an age-old remedy that is currently being rediscovered as a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to be used in modern medicine. The present study aims to investigate the use and perception of honey as CAM among the general public in Ibadan metropolis. A cross sectional study was conducted using three local government areas in Ibadan, a structured and tested questionnaire was then adopted with readjustment. A total of 405 questionnaires were randomly distributed within the study area. These indicate that 63.5% (257/405) of the respondents used honey as CAM, and age significantly affects the usage/ none usage of honey in the study area (p < 0.05). Many respondents claimed they use honey as a dietary supplement for general well-being (79%, 203/257), or for treating burns/wounds (76.3, 196/257), cough (72.8%, 187/257) and sore throat (60.3%, 155/257). A small percentage of the respondents used honey to treat ulcers (17.1%, 44/257). Our work also revealed that a limited number of the respondents (13%, 32/257) buy honey from pharmaceutical stores, while information regarding honey was majorly gotten from friends and family (70%, 180/257). In addition, respondents have favourable perception of the use of honey as CAM - as over 60% of them rated strongly agree and agree for each of the perception question. Respondents highlighted some risk factors affecting the use of honey as CAM, Among which inadequate information on the use of honey ranked highest (mean = 4.40), concerns were also raised on the quality (mean = 4.33) and high price of honey used (4.31). There are favourable perception of the use of honey as CAM, but issues relating to honey quality should be determined before use. Future work should be done to test the perception and acceptance level of honey as CAM among health workers.

The medical application of honey has a long tradition. In antiquity it was used as a potent substance with dietary and medicinal attributes. Based on Celsus’ texts we know that the ancient Romans used honey primarily in treating skin conditions, including inflammations such as Erysipelas, wounds, all types of ulcers and eye diseases. Celsus mentioned honey in numerous formulas, but he did not distinguish between its types or the ways in which it was obtained. More attention was paid to such matters in the following centuries. This can be observed by analysing the formulas included in the works of younger authors.

Opis:
Thermal waters belong to the greatest treasures of Podhale. They are used not only in heat engineering but also in recreation, medicine and rehabilitation (Kępińska 2004, 2009, Tomaszewska 2009). It is also known that thermal waters are treated and used for drinking or commercial purposes (Bujakowski & Tomaszewska 2007, Tomaszewska 2009, 2011, Tomaszewska & Bodzek 2013). Thermal waters in Bańska Niżna are exploited by PEC Geotermia Podhalańska S.A. Company. Commercial use of these waters began in 1993, when the system based on geothermal doublet, supplied heat to several houses (Ślimak & Wartak 2009). Currently, the exploitation is made by using three wells: Bańska IG-1 well, Bańska PGP-1 well and Bańska PGP-3 well. Hydrogeochemical characteristic of thermal waters in Bańska Niżna was based on researches concerning the state of those waters, which was being carried out every two weeks between December 2013 and August 2015. Field research was based on measurements of non-stable parameters – pH, electrical conductivity γ 25 and the temperature on the flow. The results of field measurements were supplemented with archival data: water temperature at the well head, pressure and well discharge. The samples for laboratory tests were taken by the author of this work in accordance with the standard ISO 5667-11:2004. The chemical composition analysis of thermal waters was carried out by accredited Hydrogeochemical Laboratory of the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology AGH in Kraków (certificate of Polish Centre of Accreditation No. AB 1050). This analysis included measurements of concentration of 45 indicators. On the basis of the results of the research, the hydrogeochemical type of thermal waters in Bańska Niżna was defined as sulfate-chloride-sodium-calcium type (according to the classification by Shchukarev–Priklonskiy (Prikłoński & Łaptiew 1955)). The medium values of the basic parameters of analyzed wells, estimated on the basis of data from 2013–2015, are as follows: - Bańska IG-1 well: pH 6.63, γ 25 3.48 mS/cm, temperature at the well head 78.5°C, pressure 11.8 ba, well discharge 58.1 m 3 /h, mineralization 2522.8 mg/dm 3 ; - Bańska PGP-1: pH 6.69, γ 25 3,39 mS/cm, temperature at the well head 85.9°C, pressure 14.4 ba, well discharge 317.3 m 3 /h, mineralization 2533.6 mg/dm 3 ; - Bańska PGP-3: pH 6.72, γ 25 3.43 mS/cm, temperature at the well head 85.0°C, pressure 14.0 ba, well discharge 221.3 m 3 /h, mineralization 2514.3 mg/dm 3. The database from the years 2013–2015 was supplemented by archival results of chemical composition analyzes. On that basis, the assessment of the thermal waters chemical composition stability in Bańska Niżna was prepared, according to the scheme presented in work (Kmiecik & Korzec 2015). It is especially important because physical parameters and chemical composition of geothermal waters can be change during the long-term exploitation. According to Polish law, confirm stability of the physico-chemical parameters is necessary because using these waters in medicine (Dz.U. 2011, nr 163, poz. 981 art. 5). Moreover, the hydrogeochemical model of formation of those waters was defined.

Paracelsus said that : "Medicine is not only a science; it is also an art. It does not consist of compounding pills and plasters; it deals with the very processes of life, which must be understood before they may be guided." The meeting points of music and medicine, both art and science, are many: the stories of physicians who became musicians; diseases or infirmaries of famous composers; musical use while performing medical, surgical or psychological procedures; and music as a mean of therapy. Along history, many physicians were deeply involved in music: medical practitioners may well improve their everyday skills of the patients-physicians interrelationship, being more humane, more patient to their clients and much more happier.

The aim of this study is to present the impact of the new legal solutions introduced in the so-called Falsified Medicines Directive on medicine safety in the EU. For the purposes of this study, it was necessary to analyze and interpret the provisions of the said Directive and the Delegated Regulation. The guarantees of medicine authenticity, such as a code to be scanned and placed on the medicine packaging (serialization) have been discussed in the paper. These activities are aimed at reducing the market of counterfeit medicines across the EU. The research tool used in the study was the dogmatic and legal method, which made it possible to conclude, that the provisions of the Falsified Medicines Directive increase the guarantee of drug safety. Considering the fact that these regulations are apolitical, one can assume that they will be implemented in other legal systems.

Opis:
For the author there are three major challenges in Regenerative Medicine (RegMed), namely to develop strategies which are translatable, materials which are functional and methods which are predictive. New strategies in RegMed depend on a concerted interdisciplinary effort between the exact and engineering sciences on the one side and the life sciences on the other. As cells synthesize and reside in an extracellular matrix (ECM), which they remodel, a main focus of biomaterial research is the development of injectable, bioresorbable hydrogels containing biological signals which could be released by tissue responses. These interactive materials will certainly increase in importance in the future. However, a major challenge is how to combine them, for example, in composites with load-bearing capacity relevant for human applications. Where synthetic materials such as metals are still essential, as in orthopaedics and traumatology, there is the possibility of adding such responsive materials as coatings to the bulk material. The use of decellularized matrix is also part of the bioinspired approach to developing biomaterials. In the life sciences great effort is being invested in understanding the so-called „regenerative niche“, which differs from tissue to tissue. Great progress made in stem cell biology has opened up new vistas on the possibility to target a regenerative niche. Cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions remain a central element of this activity. One of the paradigm shifts we need to master is the step from what is usual even in complex cell biological models, namely the use of purely physiological conditions, to a more realistic situation as would be found in the clinical setting. Thus, we need to understand regeneration in hostile environments, which include post-trauma, cancer and multimorbidity. This will be discussed with examples from the author’s own research. One of the important in vitro methods to investigate the mechanisms involved in regeneration is the use of coculture systems with relevant human cells, usually on tissue culture plastic and, as knowledge progresses, on more complex 3D biomaterial scaffolds. As major limiting factors in bone regeneration are the speed and extent of vascularization, we have established human osteoblast (pOB)-endothelial cell (EC) cocultures to study cellular crosstalk and its possible use for translational strategies [1,2]. Concerning the background, if two cell populations, that is, human pOB and human dermal microvascular EC (HDMEC), are seeded as cell suspensions on an open porous biomaterial scaffold, such as can be made from microfibres of the silk protein fibroin, the two cell types will interact in such a way that lumen-containing, capillary-like structures (CLS) will form as a vascular network [3]. Further molecular studies on the cellular crosstalk revealed that the EC induce an upregulation of growth factor and matrix production in pOB, such as VEGF and collagen type I resp. The EC then respond to these signals by promoting the angiogenic phenotype [4,5]. The following additional approaches have been adopted to study CLS formation: use of early embryonic signals, such as sonic hedgehog (shh), to accelerate both osteoand angiogenesis [6,7], use of intermittent hypoxia, but not constant hypoxia, to promote vascular sprout formation, and study of possible stimulatory roles for macrophages in the bone regenerative niche [8]. How this is investigated in coculture models will be discussed in the context of future evelopments. Naturally, all phenomena from in vitro studies require proof of concept in relevant in vivo models, as only this approach can lead to a translational perspective. Thus, we were able to demonstrate that these in vitro pre-formed vessels can rapidly become inosculated, that is, incorporated into the pre-existing microcirculation of host tissue in a subcutaneous implantation model [9]. The major role of the osteoblasts as a natural „drug delivery system“ was shown by the fact that host vascular response can be stimulated by these cells even in the absence of a pre-cultivation with endothelial cells [10]. A further aspect offering a promising perspective for the future is NanoMedicine, which uses advances in nanotechnology for medical applications. For reasons of time this will not be addressed in the context of the presentation. In conclusion, biomaterials, especially so-called responsive biomaterials, are an essential element of modern regenerative medicine, and must be accompanied by state of the art life sciences, from cell and molecular biology to good clinical practice. To achieve this the multidisciplinary approach is a conditio sine qua non.

Opis:
Aconite (Aconitum napellus) was one of the most notorious, poisonous plants in the ancient world. Its dangerous, lethal power – present in leaves, roots, stem, and tuber – was well known to the Greeks and the Romans from the earliest times. Evidence of this phenomenon is not only present in archaeological findings, but also in many writings – biographies, poems, legal codes, etc. However, the most precise and detailed accounts come from treatises written by botanists, physicians and encyclopaedists, like Theophrastus, Nicander, Pliny the Elder, Dioscorides, or Galen, and by early Byzantine authors, Oribasius, Aetius of Amida, and Paul of Aegina. In their testimonies, one can find descriptions of aconite, its influence on the human body (and animals), and remedies for affected people. In contrast, there are few passages from these sources that inform the readers about the healing properties of aconite. According to these fragments, carefully administered, aconite could be helpful in some therapies, but its use was extremely hazardous, as even a small part of the plant could kill a man.

Effective care of patients requires profound and special knowledge about the patient, competence and commitment of the doctor and a solid bond of trust between them. Despite the many socio-cultural and professional factors that can divide doctors and patients and the impact of political and economic pressure on all health care, effective medical practice with careful listening and empathic attention must replace this hurried and impersonal one. Among many responses and countermeasures for the failure of the modern healthcare system is the professional Narrative Medicine program, developed at the New York Columbia University in 2000. The main aim of this paper is to present the genesis and development of narrative medicine in Sweden and to use its assumptions in clinical practice, both from the holistic perspective of the family doctor in the clinic and the clinician in the hospital ward. The author will also mention briefly the use of narrative methods and medical humanities in the education of medical faculty students in Sweden.

The aim of the study is to present the life and work of the Dutch physician. This study presents his contribution to the development of medicine and anatomy in Europe in the 18th century. Hermann Boerhaave (1668–1738) was a Dutch physician and humanist of worldwide fame. He is considered to be the founder of clinical science. He introduced tutoring at a patient’s bed and applied measuring temperature with a thermometer in diagnosis . He examined digestion processes and was the first author to describe perspiratory glands. He founded the first clinical hospital in Leida. The eponym, Boerhaave syndrome is connected with his person. It is a spontaneous rupture of the esophagus wall. The rupture occurs most often as a result of chronic massive vomiting.
Praca dotyczy życia i działalności naukowej holenderskiego lekarza i uczonego, przedstawiając jego wkład w rozwój medycyny i anatomii w Europie w XVIII wieku.

Traditional and Western medicine are both commonplace in South Africa, and are often consulted in conjunction with each other. The article aims to fill critical knowledge gaps in understanding how women as caregivers decide on medication when experiencing illness in the home. In order to achieve valid and rich in-depth understanding about the types of medicine that individuals opt for, a narrative study was conducted. The research participants are women from Bloemfontein’s townships. Analysis of the participants’ narratives suggests that there are social-economic, traditional, and cultural trajectories associated with negotiating medical treatment. The findings indicate that the context in which individuals give meaning to, diagnose, and treat illness influences their remedial choices. Accordingly, many individuals constantly shift between different types of remedies, as they believe that they yield different, but unique possibilities and solutions.

The aim of this article is to show the influence of witches, demons, ghosts, and gods on human health in Ancient Mesopotamia. Mesopotamian medicine was based on magic and considered illness to be the work of a supernatural power. Ashu and ashipu – doctors of body and soul – worked together to diagnose and help the patient. Sometimes prayers and magical rituals were necessary for a patient to get well; often, only a herbal mixture was needed. Mesopotamian magical and medical texts describe many kinds of diseases: somatic, mental, and others. Among these are: fever, headaches, leprosy, epilepsy, blindness, impotency, paralysis. This article is an effort to analyse Mesopotamian prescriptions, incantations, and medical interventions and to answer questions about the health of ancient mankind.

In Galen’s view, health was a natural state and disease unnatural. If a body became unwell, balance was best restored by adjustments to daily life, in particular to the environment, food and drink, exercise, sleep, physiological balance and mental health. If none of these worked, only then should drugs or more drastic treatments be considered. Galen sets out in On Health how the natural state is best preserved, starting from birth, through childhood, to adulthood and old age. There are several features to be noted, not least the relentlessly male focus (with childbirth the major area of consideration for women specifically) and the use of the idealised young man as the canon against which to measure all bodies. This latter feature has led commentators to suppose that Galen only has the leisured rich class in mind, wrongly I believe. Two recent translations in the Loeb series (Johnston) and in the CUP Galen series (Singer forthcoming) have made the text readily available to all, and further discussion is timely. In my paper I will focus on Galen’s use of diet and massage to keep the body healthy. I shall also consider the unhealthy body which takes up the last three of the six books, as the life span nears later age and greater fragility. Even here, Galen prefers food and gentle remedies to bloodletting and drugs (which are in effect often stronger versions of food plants). Galen claims that this regime has kept him healthy for 50 years, despite his less than perfect constitution and lifestyle. He is thus a doctor who experiments on himself to promote a lifestyle which, he claims, should, after an initial assessment, maintain the patient without need of a doctor for life.

According to the researchers, the most intriguing and fascinating work at the Corpus Hippocraticum is the treatise De prisca medicina. It consists of 24 parts in which Hippocrates argues that the human organism is a blend of various substances or humors. Having set forth humoral theory, Hippocrates criticizes the hypothesis about the causes of diseases independent of this theory. Hippocrates medicine, due to the way it is practiced, should be treated as τέχνη, and this term can be translated as proficiency, craftsmanship, skills, craft, and art. Medicine should not use hypotheses or generalizations but should be based on experience and research. The doctor was a researcher, but above all a craftsman, accompanied by students and other doctors, with whom he analyzed every case of disease.

In the middle of 1990s, a new trend appeared in the Polish jurisprudence, namely biojurisprudence. In his scholarly works, Roman Tokarczyk defined the need for having a fresh look at the world dominated by technological progress and thus created the basis for a new branch of the codified law – biolaw. By drawing attention to the problems caused by biotechnological revolution whose eugenic extremities might lead to materialization of the Frankenstein myth, Tokarczyk expressed the need of giving up the traditional understanding of law and developing its new framework. In its perspective vision, biojurisprudence concentrates the views of ethicists, philosophers, theologians and even theoreticians of law thus becoming a branch of science that touches upon the most current needs.

This critical analysis presents the organizational structures of the military health service that had existed since Great Poland Uprising until 1939, starting from spontaneously formed medical units recruited from volunteers in the year 1918 Lhrough — often changed and reformed — medical establishments including sanitary departments, treatment areas, hospitals and other medical units. The purpose of such presentation is to save numerous dedicated army physicians, civilian physicians from being irreversibly forgotten. Such issues have been discussed as the 1920s great demobilization period deficiency in medical personnel, often changing models of the military health service, the lack of a homogeneous army medical doctrine, including the location of army physicians in the medical landscape of the capital of Great Poland. The comparison of the two models of post-graduate education for civilian and army physicians has revealed the existence of a syslemized and centralized education aimed at specialists’ Iraining to fulfill the army health care needs. In terms of Poland’s twenty years of independence reality and the army medical service rules, activities have been presented concerning health treatment and service, the social and scientific sphere as well as the distinguished corps physicians, among whom we can mention the commander of the Great Poland Regional Hospital — Colonel Teofil Kucharski and the commander of the Reserve Medical Personnel — Colonel Leon Strehl. With regard to the volume of the publication and the fact that army physicians serving in line troops are the focus of interest of another critical analysis, this particular professional group has not been mentioned in the analysis discussed.

Opis:
We live in the era of personalisation. Personalised advertisements attack us all around, we are proposed customised trainings and dietary plans. It is no different in medicine. Personalized medicine offers a special approach to the specific needs and symptoms of each patient. How is the future of medical cannabis drawn in the light of this concept? After all, the use of so-called "medical marijuana", although controversial, is the actual part of modern medicine. Approach to the principle: "one size fits all" does not work with therapeutic cannabis therapy. Cannabis is a complex herbal medicine, so far over five hundred compounds present in them have been identified and isolated - not only cannabinoids, but also terpenes, flavonoids and many other compounds. They are able to affect each other, causing so-called “entourage effect” (enhancing, synergetic effect). These interactions are responsible for specific action of different cannabis varieties. Choosing the right product is a huge challenge. There are hundred of different strains of cannabis. The global cannabis industry is full of different types and forms of products. Finding the right one for a patient struggling with specific condition can be a challenge. Gratefully, innovations allow higher levels of personalization while addressing challenges faced by a medical cannabis patient. Platforms using extensive data sets and artificial intelligence are being developed worldwide, which allow the development of personalized therapies based on cannabinoids, including for patients with cancer. However, there is a risk of abuse in this field. Especially since in Poland there is no proper law regarding genetic testing and biobanking... The other thing is that Cannabis flos, like other herbal medicinal products, can cause drug-drug interactions. As the medical cannabis market continues to evolve, we should all strive to ensure that the drug is adapted to the safety and therapeutic profile of the largest number of patients in need.
Żyjemy w erze personalizacji. Zewsząd atakują nas personalizowane reklamy, proponuje się nam dostosowane do naszych wymagań plany treningowe i dietę. Nie inaczej jest w medycynie. Medycyna spersonalizowana oferuje zindywidualizowane podejście do specyficznych potrzeb i objawów każdego pacjenta.

The evaluation of glycosyl composition is an essential step to guide future research designs applied in bioactivity. In the same way, the unexplored potential bioactivity of exopolysaccharide from Ganoderma lucidum is huge. Therefore, this study investigated the glycosyl composition of the exopolysaccharide isolated from submerged fermentation of G. lucidum to serve as guide for future studies on bioactivity. Glycosyl content and composition were evaluated by combined GC/ MS of the TMS derivatives of the monosaccharide methyl glycosides produced from the sample by acidic methanolysis. Glycosyl composition analysis showed that the dominant carbohydrate component in all samples of exopolysaccharide isolated from submerged fermentation of G. lucidum CG 144 was glucose (58.1%), mannose (26.6%) and galactose (12.5%) which can be referred to as heteroglycan. These results suggest that this Ganoderma exopolysaccharide may be a new immunomodulatory agent.

This paper presents results of examinations of the intima-media thickness (IMT) in human common carotid arteries. Ultrasonic examinations were carried out on healthy volunteers with the use of the apparatus Vascular Echo Doppler (VED), designed in IFTR-PAS to measure the elasticity of arteries. Application of the PDA-14 PC-card (Signatec) allowed for the acquisition of ultrasonic RF signal from the output of the apparatus VED and for further analysis of dynamic changes of the IMT during a heart cycle. Changing of the IMT in time as a difference between the instantaneous position of the two tracking slopes of RF echoes was obtained. For this purpose the zero-crossing method, for tracking phase changes of two characteristic rising slopes of the RF ultrasonic echo, was used.

Opis:
In the past peasant families did not regard health as a value in itself. The low ‘cultural status' of health was associated with the constant threat to it, the frailty of life and poverty which, as peasant diarist wrote, ‘did not let one live’. ‘Plague, war, and famine’ would decimate the village population for centuries, and these people were help-less in the face of epidemic and natural disasters. For that reason death was treated as familiar part of the trajectory of human life, natural and indisputable.A feature of folk culture, which influences behaviors in and attitudes towards illness among the peasant population, is co-occurrence mystical-magical elements. Mystical-magical acts influenced and still influence patterns of behaviors in illness and dying process which a peasant family exhibits. For example, illness was assumed to be caused by spells, charms and magic; and the use of holy relics, amulets or talismans was believed to prevent illness. People were convinced that revelation, inspiration or clairvoyance made it easier to diagnose an illness whereas casting spells, charms, and the like would remove it effectively. In our article we will discuss typical ways of coping with illness and dying processes’, the determinants of behaviors in illness, emphasizing customs associated with illness, behavioral patterns, ways of expressing emotions, and fatalism as attitude towards illness and death. We will stress the importance of cultural and religious elements, and accentuate the special role played by women in coping with illness by using self-treatment and folk healing methods.

This presentation intends to present polysaccharidebased matrices for regenerative medicine and as drug delivery systems and targeted contrast agents for molecular imaging. One main challenge of tissue engineering is to create an optimal environment for growing therapeutic cells to regenerate damaged tissues. This environment can be reconstituted by using 3D matrices, in which cells can be organized into a tissue-like structure. We have prepared polysaccharide-based porous matrices having controlled pores and porosity for several cell types. These porous hydrogels made of natural biodegradable and biocompatible polysaccharides have architectural characteristics adapted to the cell culture in 3D. We have developed them to different shapes and sizes. Further studies have demonstrated the performance of these matrices for tissue repair in vitro as well as in small and large animals. Examples for heart, vessel, and bone will be presented. Moreover, polysaccharide-based nano and microsystems were also designed and used for the imaging of cardiovascular pathologies as targeted contrast agents for molecular imaging. Examples will be provided using several types of imaging modalities for thrombus detection. We will also present how to use nanomaterials for regenerative medicine. Indeed, adhesion by aqueous nanoparticle solutions can be used in vivo to achieve rapid and strong closure and healing of deep wounds in rat skin and liver. Nanoparticles can also be used to fix polymer membranes to tissues even in the presence of blood flow, such as occurring after liver resection, yielding permanent hemostasis within a minute. Furthermore, medical devices and tissue engineering constructs could be fixed to organs such as a beating heart.

The relativistic models of the political nature cannot fulfil the indispensable criteria of the ethical dimension of the trans-modern era. If we need a wider definition of bio-ethics we have to answer three basic questions and such people need to live a moral life and make good ethical decisions. What are my obligations concerning recruitment of different people whose life can depend on my actions? How can I contribute to serve common good for the good public interest as the member of society? Then they will have to answer the questions and be responsible for bio-policy. Bio-policy in the bioethic dimensions will have to offer the global society of the all-European system of the rational connection to save the mankind from extinction on Earth. You will have to create and carry out supranational projects to eliminate people’s destructive behaviours. Relativistic political models are not able to fulfil the necessary ethical dimension of the transmodern society by their fundamentals. If more widely defined bioethics has to answer three basic questions: What personality should I be to live a moral life and take good ethical decisions?; What are my obligations and duties towards other people whose lives can be influenced by my activity?; How can I, as a member of the society, contribute to a common wealth or common interest? Then these questions should be answered also by a responsible biopolitician. Holistic or whole person medicine perceives a personality of a patient within bio-psycho-socio-spiritual dimensions. This view requires a favourable all-society climate and tolerance. Chinese traditional philosophy with its responsibility for life in the context of minimalist multicultural ethos may be incentive individual metaphysical heritage also for a Slovak politician, voter, heatlh worker, and patient. The naturo-dialectical philosophy of life of the classical Chinese social conscience speaks about ethical principles and morality of meek obedience of a man towards the laws of nature and the universe of haven as about a life regulating macroorganism, an internal part of which a man is, too. The ideals of harmonious unity and mutual modesty emphasise the ideal of accentuation of all-society interests over the interests of an individual. The systemic view perceives the world on the base of relationships and integration, the cohesion of live organisms is non-linear, therefore the live organisms work in unbalance with autoregulation. This characteristic applies to biopsyche as well as to a socio-cultural level. The holistic approach to health and healing draws on traditional cultures, e.g. on the phenomenon of medicine-men practice. The East Asian model of health consists in the integration of the psychological and social factors into the system of health care, it calculates for the model of the dynamic balance. The future system of health care should consist in an effective system of preventive health care adopting a personal and social responsibility for health. The health care policy should include the legislation for prevention of health risks and also the social policy. A profound ecological perceptivity, observation and education are the preconditions for the application of the political model on the base of the global biopolitics.

Introduction and aim. The use of complementary medicine applications is increasing due to the interest of society. We aimed to assess the attitudes, behaviors, and awareness of the patients who applied to a primary care unit towards complementary medicine practices. Material and methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted with the voluntary participation of 562 individuals who admitted in a primary care unit. The data was collected through face-to-face interviews through a research questionnaire form and the Complementary, Alternative, and Conventional Medicine Attitudes Scale between 20 June-20 August 2021. The sample size was calculated with the OpenEpi v3.01program and statistical analyzes were performed using the SPSS-24 package program. Results. Their mean age was 39.73±12.95 years and women accounted for 55.5% (n=312) of all participants. The most known complementary medicine methods were phytotherapy, acupuncture, and cup therapy. The information sources of the participants about Complementary Medicine were mostly people around them; only 31.1% of them consulted a doctor. The mean total scale score was 111.45±19.08. Those with chronic diseases, employees, who had COVID-19 disease, high educational status, and those who evaluated their health status as good had more positive attitudes towards complementary medicine practices. A weak negative correlation was found between age and total scale score. Conclusion. Although positive attitudes towards complementary medicine practices are exhibited, health professionals are consulted at very low rates as a source of information. Health care providers must make arrangements and plans to provide this increasing interest from reliable sources.

Opis:
For the last three decades, an increasing interest in new materials based on blends of two or more polymers has been observed. Fish skin collagen and chitosan are constantly highly popular among scientists. This study aimed to obtain thin films from mixtures of low and medium molecular weight chitosan with fish collagen in three different ratios and examine their features for potential use in medicine and cosmetic industry. Polymer blends in ratios 25:75, 50:50, and 75:25 were made to obtain thin films. The infrared spectroscopy, mechanical properties study, contact angle measurements, topographic imaging, and swelling test were used to characterize the features of the films. A statistical appraisal of the results was conducted with the Q-Dixon’s test. The infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that in the IR spectra of the examined biomaterials, there are shifts in the bands positions proving intermolecular interactions between collagen and chitosan in the blends. The mechanical properties in the mixtures were different from those of a single biopolymer film. Hydrophilicity and polarity of the blends decrease with the increasing collagen content, which may suggest that the adhesion to the skin will be enhanced. The surface topography of the obtained films varies depending on the ratio of biopolymers in the mixtures. The swelling tests indicated that chitosan absorbs more water than collagen. The properties of the films made of collagen-chitosan mixtures vary depending on the molecular weight of chitosan and the content of each biopolymer in the blend.

Gender as the historical category: Relations between the medical conception of the body and the notion of genderThe article touches on the relation between gender and the medical conception of the body in the context of historical changes. The oldest European conception of gender was linked to ontic inequality, which corresponded to one-gender idea of the body in medicine. From the eighteenth century on, the medical conception of the body started to change, and the idea of two-gender body started spreading. The body of women started to be perceived as the different “other.” That change was accompanied by social and cultural shift and one of its consequences was the emergence of women’s group identity. The latest medical idea is personalized medicine, and the body is an element of the culture of individualization. Judging by the recent changes in the medical conception of the body, we are probably witnessing a change in the idea of gender – namely its dispersion. Płeć kulturowa jako kategoria historyczna. Relacje między medyczną koncepcją ciała a pojęciem płci kulturowejArtykuł dotyczy relacji pomiędzy pojęciem płci kulturowej a medyczną koncepcją ciała w kontekście zmian historycznych.

Praca w Zespołach Ratownictwa Medycznego to stresująca i odpowiedzialna służba. Cel. Celem badań była ocena prawidłowego postępowania członków Zespołów Ratownictwa Medycznego w sytuacjach trudnych. Materiał i metody. Grupę badawczą stanowiło 120 osób, członków Zespołów Ratownictwa Medycznego. Użyta metoda – sondaż diagnostyczny, narzędzie badawcze – autorski kwestionariusz ankiety. Do obliczeń zależności pomiędzy kilkoma poziomami zmiennych zastosowano test Chi Kwadrat Pearsona. Przedstawiono w pracy analizy tablic krzyżowych, gdzie zachodziła różnica istotna statystycznie czyli relacja pomiędzy jedną zmienną a drugą. Wyniki. W przeprowadzonym badaniu wzięły udział kobiety – 19 osób i mężczyźni 101 osób.
Introduction. Working in Medical Rescue Teams is stressful and responsible service. Doctors face difficult situations every day. They make important decisions, they look at people's pain and suffering. They witness death and new life. They save, help, heal and at the same time they are just people guided by emotions, in need of rest and sometimes support. Aim of the study. The aim of this study is to assess the correct behavior of members of Medical Rescue Teams in difficult situations. Material and methods. The research group consisted of 120 people, members of Medical Rescue Teams. Method used - diagnostic survey, research tool - author's questionnaire. Pearson's Chi Square test was used to calculate the relationship between several levels of variables. The paper presents the analysis of cross tables where there is a statistically significant difference, i.e. the relationship between one variable and another. Results. The study involved 19 women and 101 men. The respondents indicated that the most traumatic situations are sudden events involving children. Trips to events involving a patient from the "load and go" category are also described by the rescuers themselves as difficult situations. On the other hand, they see the fewest problems in events involving agitated people treated psychiatrically. Conclusions. The obtained research showed that medical workers, regardless of their profession, are specially prepared to work in emergency services. In traumatic situations, they do not always take the most effective action. The correct behavior of the members of the Medical Rescue Teams in selected difficult situations is influenced by the time of work and rest, but not by knowledge and professional experience, as well as age and gender. The decision about the profession taken at a late age and the age of starting work in the Medical Rescue Team also do not affect rescue activities undertaken in traumatic situations.

We wrześniu 1939 roku władze hitlerowskich Niemiec anektowały województwo poznańskie do obszaru III Rzeszy jako Reichsgau Wartheland. Dążyły do całkowitego usunięcia stamtąd Polaków.
In September of 1939, the Poznan Province was annexed by the state authorities of Nazi Germany to the territory of the Third Reich, and called Wartheland. The Nazi authorities aimed at expelling all Polish citizens from the area. They pursued this goal by exterminating and displacing the inhabitants to the General Government. These repressive measures sparked off the development of organizations which tried to defend Polish society. The largest of them was the Polish Home Army {Armia Krajowa). One o f its most important goals was to protect the health and life of Poles. Therefore, doctors, pharmacists, nurses and activists of various welfare and social organizations played a very important role in The Home Army.

The name of Guido Guidi appears in the histories of medicine as that of the author of a beautifully illustrated book on surgery and as one of the innumerable anatomical eponyms. Guido Guidi practiced medicine and surgery in his native city Florence and made such a reputation that he was in 1542 invited by Francis I, King of France, to come to Paris. The King appointed him one of his personal physicians and permitted him to give public lectures in medicine and surgery at the newly founded College de France. Guidi was about to publish a surgical treatise, based on a Greek manuscript of the tenth century preserved in the Laurenzian Library at Florence. Among the notable features of this manuscript were thirty full-sized plates illustrating the commentary of Apollonius of Kitium on the Hippocratic treatise on dislocations and other pictures accompanying a copy of Galen's treatise on bandaging. These illustrations represented the genuine Hippocratic traditions of surgical practice as transmitted through later Greek channels to Byzantium. In Paris, Guidi lived with Benvenuto Cellini, who became his friend and who has many laudatory references to him in his autobiography. In 1544 Guidi's book on surgery appeared. It is a splendid folio volume, beautifully printed and containing remarkable woodcut copies, or rather adaptations, of the original tenth-century drawings. Guidi's Chirurgia was the best illustrated work on surgery that had appeared up to its date. It comprises translations of six works by Hippocrates, one by Galen and two by Oribasius, together with commentaries by Galen and by Guidi himself. The treatment of all varieties of fractures and dislocations is described in great detail and is very clearly illustrated. Some three years after the publication of his Chirurgia Guidi was recalled to Italy to become chief personal physician to Cosimo de Medici. He practiced and taught medicine at Pisa, took Holy Orders, received high' ecclesiastical preferment, and was in 1557 raised to the nobility. He died at the height of his renown on 26 May 1569 and was buried in the tomb of his ancestors in Florence. For some years before his death he had been occupied in writing a comprehensive work on medicine. This great work was completed and published by his nephew in three huge volumes between 1596 and 1611. This study is based on original research and it corrects many errors that have been perpetuated in standard reference books.

Opis:
Major goals of contemporary regenerative medicine focus on improvement of irreversible damage of multiple organs and tissues by employing several approaches including recent achievements of cellbased therapies and tissue engineering. Several types of stem cells (SCs) such as bone marrow (BM)- derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) as well as SCs with multi- and pluripotent characteristics (PSCs) have been postulated as potential source of cells for therapy. Recently, embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and so called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) representing “genetically induced” SCs with high differentiation potential, have brought great hope to the field of regenerative medicine and clinical applications. When combined with modern accomplishments of tissue engineering including biocompatible carriers and scaffolds, SCs become leading targets for cell -based regenerative applications. Although the variety of stem/ progenitor cells have been applied in experimental therapies of several organs injuries, there is still no agreement in scientific and clinical world which subpopulation/s of cells would be the most efficient in such treatment. Moreover, multiple obstacles needs to be overcome prior to optimal application of SCs in regeneration including optimization of ex vivo isolation and expansion conditions or limiting vast adverse features of some SC fractions such as teratogenic potential of ESCs and iPS cells. Recently, stem cell- derived bioactive components such as cellular microvesicles (MVs) are postulated to play important role in mediating SC activity following transplantation. MVs representing bioactive components carrying SC- derived transcripts (mRNA, miRNA), proteins, enzymes and receptors may participate in tissue regeneration via stimulation of endogenous repair mechanism by activating endogenous target cells in damaged organs. Thus, the newest trends in regenerative medicine would focus not only on combined applications of biocompatible materials with SC subpopulations, but also with their bioactive acellular components including microvesicles. Unquestionably, successful applications of stem/ progenitor cells and their derivatives in regenerative medicine would need to be safe, ethically acceptable and therapeutically efficient. Sources and application protocols for such optimal stem cell therapy are still being optimized and need scientific discussion.

Assuming that the unknownshould be explained via something familiar, I consider the application of the conceptual metaphor. Objectives Occupational medicine is a discipline continually evolving in response to technological advances, changes in workplaces and production processes, emergence of new occupational risks and diseases and modifications in regulatory framework for occupational health and safety. Therefore, the recurrent revaluation of professional activity, information demands and education and training needs of occupational physicians is essential in order to identify methodologies and tools that may contribute to improvement of their professional knowledge and competency. In this regard, we conducted the first large-scale national survey of Italian occupational medicine physicians to define their demographic and professional activity and to assess their information demands, training and updating needs. Material and Methods A random sample of occupational physicians, listed in the national register of the Italian Ministry of Health, was selected to complete a voluntary survey. Subjects recruited in this study were asked to complete 3 different sections (personal and professional information, training and updating needs, professional activity and practice characteristics) of a questionnaire for a total of 35 questions. Results Most of participants were specialized in occupational medicine, worked for a large number of companies and carried out health surveillance on a total number of workers that exceeds 1500. Occupational physicians would like to have a higher training offer towards practical aspects of health surveillance, risks assessment, manual handling of loads, chemical substances and upper limb biomechanical overload. Interestingly, statistically significant differences were observed subdividing the sample into different groups according to the legal requirements to perform the professional activity of occupational physicians in Italy or according to particular aspects of their professional activity. Conclusions This study has provided interesting findings that may help to guide future discussion on alternative and additional instruments and/or methodologies that may be adopted to implement the quality and effectiveness of occupational medicine practice. Occupational medical research involves the collection and analysis of data to draw conclusions about the causes and prevention of workplace injuries and diseases. However, there has been criticism that some studies lack rigour in determining causation. This article examines the similarities and differences between occupational medical research and particle physics in terms of their approach to hypothesis testing, statistical methods, and confounder control. The article also explores the use of criteria such as the Bradford Hill criteria to determine causation in occupational medical research. While particle physics is often viewed as a highly rigorous science, occupational medical research also employs rigorous scientific methods to ensure findings are accurate and reliable. However, there is room for improvement in determining causation in occupational medical research, particularly in the use of criteria such as the Bradford Hill criteria to guide the development of more robust studies. It is essential for occupational medical research to adhere to rigorous scientific methods to deliver findings that can help reduce workplace injuries and diseases. The use of criteria such as the Bradford Hill criteria can ensure that the conclusions drawn.

Opis:
The present study has resulted from a close reading of prescriptions for therapeutic wines inserted in book V of De materia medica by Pedanius Dioscorides, the eminent expert in materia medica of the 1st century A.D. The authors emphasise the role of wine varieties and selected flavourings (and especially of myrrh) in order to determine the social status of those to whom the formulas were addressed. This perspective gives the researchers ample opportunity for elaborating not only on the significance of wine in medical procedures but also for underscoring the importance of a number of aromatics in pharmacopoeia of antiquity and Byzantium. The analysis of seven selected formulas turns out to provide a fairly in-depth insight into Mediterranean society over a prolonged period of time, and leads the authors to draw the following conclusions. First, they suggest that medical doctors were social-inequality-conscious and that Dioscorides and his followers felt the obligation to treat both the poor and the rich. Second, they prove physicians’ expertise in materia medica, exemplifying how they were capable of adjusting market value of components used in their prescriptions to financial capacities of the patients. Third, the researchers circumstantiate the place of medical knowledge in ancient, and later on in Byzantine society. Last but not least, they demonstrate that medical treatises are an important source of knowledge, and therefore should be more often made use of by historians dealing with economic and social history of antiquity and Byzantium.

Opis:
Piśmiennictwo późniejsze, a także prace z lat 1900–1945, niezwiązane wyraźniej z żadnym z ujęć teoretycznych, zostało przywołane w cytowanych w artykule monografiach, będących wynikiem moich badań nad historiografią medycyny niemieckiej.
German non-materialistic medicine arose in opposition to the main modernisation trends in European medicine, known for drawing their inspiration from the philosophy of the Enlightenment. The model of this non-materialistic medicine, referred to in historiography as a ‘romantic’ one, owed its existence to the efforts of the Prussian authorities who created it in 1797, relying on the assistance of local doctors and philosophers. It was introduced by the administrative order to the medical departments at German universities both in Prussia and in the rest of Protestant Germany. Because the model was at variance with the dominant European standards, its introduction into the University curricula met with opposition from many German doctors – those affiliated with universities and ordinary physicians. However, this opposition failed to affect the position held by the authorities who did not shy away from imposing the norms of scientific rationality on German universities. It was not until the Spring of Nations that this romantic model was removed from German academia. From 1849 onwards the clinical training remained in line with European standards. As the German romantic model – so far removed from the one prevalent at that time in Europe – received so severe a criticism from medical circles, the history of medicine showed no interest in it until the latter half of the twentieth century. Texts devoted to this appeared almost exclusively in German. The purpose of this article is to characterise the phases the historiography of German romantic medicine has undergone since 1811, i.e. since the inception of the professional historiography of German romantic medicine. The author’s aim is to highlight the principles that underlay each of the medical models presented in the article and to show the dependence of the way in which the models were evaluated in historiography on the existing medical knowledge.

Relics found by archaeologists during excavations shed some light on hygienic procedures in prehistoric times, in the Bronze and Iron Age. Personal hygiene accessories include: combs, razors, tweezers, scissors and mirrors. It can be concluded that the people inhabiting the Polish territory used a number of hygienic procedures with the view to improve health and appearance. Monographs, archaeological materials and reports reveal chronology, typology and functions o f such toiletries. The objects found in graves in cemeteries from early historical period may reflect the status of the deceased in a given community and their wealth. Hygienic accessories, besides their practical function, were also used during various ceremonies, magical practices and served as amulets.

Opis:
Działalność opisywanych zakładów miała charakter prekursorski w rozwoju fijoterapii, balneologii, medycyny fiykalnej, a w kolejnych latach stanowiła podstawy do powstania rehabilitacji w Polsce.
abstract: It is due to Vincent Priessnitz, Sebastian Kneipp and prof William Winternitz that hydrotherapy enjoyed great popularity in the nineteenth century Europe. New spas and hydrotherapy facilities were created, “frequenting the waters” became a buzzword in ever widening circles of society. This process also took place in Galicia, and the best example was Lviv. This city before World War I was a metropolis with the seat of the National Government of Galicia, a place where diffrent branches of social culture were developed. Much activity was observed in the area of public health, sport and recreation. Hydrotherapy centers, gyms and orthopedic clinics were developing dynamically. This article is the result of exhaustive study of the source materials from the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv, the Department of the Ossolinskis National Institute in Wroclaw, numerous medical journals and newspapers which appeared in the Galicia period. Based on the analysis of all available materials we produced this narrative showing the beginnings of hydrotherapy in Lviv before 1914. The paper pays particular attention to the presentation of pioneering methods of hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, massage and various forms of physiotherapy, which were practiced in Lviv hydrotherapy facilities. The conclusions arising from the analysis of source materials show that hydrotherapy in Lviv, especially in sanatoriums Kisielka and Maryówka, had markings of rehabilitation and their levels did not diffr from the then renowned European spas. Activity of the above mentioned institutions was pioneering in the development of physiotherapy, balneology, physical medicine, and in subsequent years was the basis for the establishment of rehabilitation in Poland.

Opis:
Out of 750,000 known plants in the world, a major part are medicinal and aromatic plants – a source of raw material for folk and documented systems of medicines worldwide. The folk and documented medicine in India use about 6,000 plants, although, less than 50 species have been scientifically studied and cultivated to any sizeable extent. The main factor behind the slow pace of domestication of medicinal plants is the absence of knowledge on cultivation practices and lack of suitable technology. About 90% of the medicinal plants for trade are harvested from the wild and the demand for traditional medicinal plants is increasing rapidly. Continuous exploitation of several medicinal plant species from the wild has resulted in their population decline. Hence, an effective strategy is needed for their sustainable utilization and conservation. Cultivation is the most effective way of conservation. Cultivation can also ensure production of standardized raw materials. Thereby, enhances the quality of the manufactured products. The methods and techniques of modern chemical agriculture cannot be adopted for the cultivation of medicinal plants as they should be free from harmful residues. Pesticides and other harmful chemicals have been detected in some herbal products. Hence, to ensure a safe, residue-free and reliable material for use in herbal drug industry, there is an urgent need to adopt strategies for cultivation of medicinal plants that are consistent with principles of good agricultural practices.
W niektórych produktach ziołowych wykryto pestycydy i inne szkodliwe substancje chemiczne. Zatem, by zapewnić bezpieczny, wolny od dodatków innych szkodliwych substancji chemicznych surowiec dla produkcji leków ziołowych, istnieje paląca potrzeba wdrożenia sposobów uprawy roślin leczniczych spójnych z zasadami dobrej praktyki rolniczej.

Background: We wanted to develop substantial and statistical methodology for complex assessment of quality of teaching in internal medicine at a medical university. Our aim was also to check the connection between the results obtained during the midterm and final exam. Material and methods: We compared the results obtained by Polish (PD, n=235) and English Division (ED, n=81) students achieved during the midterm exam and multiple-choice final exam. The mean scores were calculated with t-Student test. For further evaluation Wilcoxon tests were used with the Bonferroni correction, The Stuart-Maxwell test was carried out to verify the hypothesis about correlations between results in the midterm and final exam. Results: The mean midterm exam score was 84.4% in PD and 72.6% in ED (p <0.0001) and mean final exam score was respectively 72.3% and 55.6% (p <0.0001). Good result of the final exam was obtained by 62% of students Conclusions: It is crucial to use appropriate tools to grade the quality of teaching. To evaluate that one should use advance statistical tests. The fact that ED students achieve less points on the exams might have several reasons such as the language barrier. Obtaining a good result during midterm exam does not guarantee passing the final exam.

As the “innervated universe” of our body, the brain, holds the secrets determining humanity, over centuries there was a huge necessity to understand its complexity and ongoing processes. Surgical interventions for neurological diseases entered their Enlightenment Era with Modern Neurosurgery principles, works of Harvey Cushing and Ernest Sachs. Despite over two centuries of extensive research in various neuroscientific aspects, neurological conditions still await for innovative treatment options. Modern medical world complements Western medicine with traditional therapeutic options known and passed from generations to generations, with one of the most broad and oldest traditions - Traditional Chinese Medicine. The aim of this study is to present the use and effectiveness of acupuncture in treatment and rehabilitation of neurosurgical conditions. Therefore substantial articles on use of acupuncture in neurosurgery have been analyzed. Among 184 articles in PubMed Medline database from years 2008-2018, 9 articles were selected for further analysis. Most of the studies focused on reduction of need of general anesthesia in neurosurgical cases and also on influence on anti-inflamatory and immunological reactions. Another group of research investigated acupuncture as supportive therapy for thalamic hemorrhage and cerebral vasospasm post-SAH. Studies complemented and compared treatment of specific symptoms in neurosurgical conditions, such as post operative nausea and vomiting, anxiety. Reviewed research presents improvements in usage of acupuncture for neurosurgical conditions. Hopefully with introduction of quality standards of acupuncture research, as well as increased interest of medical and patient environments in supportive therapies, the scientific based proofs of acupuncture effectiveness will provide assistance in treatment of neurosurgical conditions.

India is known for its rich flora and fauna, diverse climatic areas and wealth of living ethno medicinal plant using the tradition. The paper enumerates medicinal plants used by Irula tribes Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu. The traditional practises of three medicinal plants belonging to three families are obtainable with botanical name, family, local name, parts used, method of groundwork and ethno pharmaceutical uses. Medicinal plants were the richest source of India with many traditional uses. Numerous of the pharmacological and pharmacognostical studies of the medicinal plants shown their active application in the field of medicine as they possess certain nutrient and non-nutrient substances that protects and precludes the body from many diseases. They attain a great helpfulness in the present world due to the side effects of the manmade drugs on the human life. Dodonaea viscosa Linn. is an evergreen woody perennial shrub with a native of Australia, indigenous and was later wide spread throughout the region of tropics. Various plant parts such as stem, leaves, seeds, roots, bark and aerial parts were used as the antibacterial, analgesic antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer and antioxidant agent in traditional system of medicine.

readmission
Opis:
Introduction. The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) is a comorbidity scale used widely throughout the world. Despite its widespread use, its relationship with patient readmission to the Emergency departments (ED) has not been evaluated previously. Aim. To show whether there is a correlation between the CCI score and the number of repeated admissions to ED and that the CCI score can be used as a predicted factor for the serious patients. Material and methods. This was a prospective observational cross-sectional study. Age, gender, vital signs of the patients who agreed to participate in the study was recorded. Numbers of ED readmissions of patients within six months after discharge and CCI scores have been recorded. Results. The study was completed with 1420 patients. The admission rates of patients in the ED in the six months were significantly higher in the CCI 5+ group than in other groups (p<0.05) There was a positive correlation between the number of visits and CCI scores (p<0.01; C>0). Conclusion. We believe that the CCI scoring system can be used by ED clinicians to predict the risk of readmission of patients after discharge from ED.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: Digitisation and implementation of IT solutions is contemporarily an intrinsic element while carrying out emergency medical activities. However, the system of education and evaluation of paramedics is conducted in a traditional way in Poland. The aim of the paper was to implement and critically evaluate the project of Emergency Medicine Exam conducted with the use of multimedia computer devices. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The undergraduates took part in a test consisting of fifteen questions concerning medical emergency activities conducted in a traditional (written) and interactive (computer) form. An original tool was developed and it enabled us to apply interactive tasks and centralize statistics. The achieved results underwent parametric tests (T-Student test, T – test for dependent samples with Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient) at significance coefficient of p<0,05. RESULTS: Average percentage results of both forms of the test including all the question categories indicated a statistically significant difference in the test with both samples for averages , where p=0,001 (59,09 % ± 12,16 vs 49,36 % ± 17,61). The number of people who did not succeed in passing the test at 51% passing point was 6 in the traditional test and 10 in the interactive one. Satisfaction analysis indicated the highest mark for detailed feedback (Me=5,95; from 1 to 6 scale). CONCLUSIONS: Multimedia computer devices may be efficiently used while implementing Emergency Medicine Exam. The evaluation of non-technical skills, thanks to the introduction of interactive tasks, enables a more detailed assessment of the competence of candidates for paramedics.
MATERIAŁ I METODY: TBadani uczestniczyli w teście złożonym z piętnastu zagadnień z zakresu medycznych czynności ratunkowych realizowanym w formie tradycyjnej (pisemnej) oraz interaktywnej (komputerowej).

Objective: Although medicine students express positive attitudes toward providing lifestyle counseling, they require more instruction in many areas of health behavior in order to be helpful to their patients. The presented study included the students' questionnaires analysis regarding their lifestyle and exposure to tobacco smoke. The aim of this study was to examine students' exposure to chosen xenobiotics by determination of selected biomarkers in urine samples, which underlay the basis for exposure assessment towards tobacco smoke. Materials and Methods: The investigated group consisted of first- and second-year medicine students from the Silesian Medical University (N = 133). Data obtained from a questionnaire survey was compared with the results of chosen biomarkers determined in urine samples. The analyses of the main nicotine metabolites were carried out firstly with use of ELISA, followed by the TLC technique with densitometry. Results: According to questionnaires, every third student examined was exposed to passive smoking. The mean concentration of the main nicotine metabolites determined by ELISA in urine samples of smoking students was 1293.52±396.70 μg/g creatinine. The results of the TLC analysis in the group of smoking students were as follows: for cotinine - 523.10±68.10 μg/g creatinine and for trans-3'-hydroxycotinine - 653.81±62.30 μg/g creatinine. Conclusions: Medicine students, regardless of their area of study, are a highly-exposed part of the population to tobacco smoke, not only actively but also passively. Tobacco smoke exposure can be assessed by ELISA as a screening method as well as by more specific TLC technique with densitometry.

Objectives The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of bedside examination for screening of vestibular and balance system for occupational medicine purposes. Study group comprised 165 patients referred to Audiology and Phoniatric Clinic due to vestibular and/or balance problems. Caloric canal paresis of 19% was the cut off value to divide patients into 43 caloric-positive vestibular subjects and 122 caloric-negative patients. The latter group comprised 79 subjects revealing abnormalities of videonystagmographic (VNG) oculomotor tests (central group) and 43 subjects with normal VNG. Material and Methods Vestibular and balance symptoms were collected. Five tests were included to bedside examination: Romberg and Unterberger tests, Head Impulse Test (HIT), Dynamic Visual Acuity (DVA) and gaze nystagmus assessment. Results Vestibular and balance symptoms were reported by 82% of vestibular, 73% of central and 40% of VNG-normal patients. Thirteen out of 18 VNG-normal but symptomatic subjects (73%) had abnormal tests in clinical assessment. The sensitivity of bedside test set for vestibular pathology was 88% as compared to caloric test and 68% for central pathology as compared to VNG oculomotor tests. Conclusions The combination of 5 bedside tests reveal satisfactory sensitivity to detect vestibular abnormalities. Bedside examination abnormalities are highly correlated with vestibular/balance symptoms, regardless the normal results of VNG. Thus, this method should be recommended for occupational medicine purposes.

Heterotopia is the space of otherness, a counter-space. A very specific type of heterotopia is a human’s body, especially in its illness and sickness. Hysteria, the disease which can imitate many other diseases, is here a crucial example. From its ancient beginnings until today hysteria makes us reflect on the essence of illness and disease, on the definition of the human condition, on the social role of a healthy and ill human body, etc. The archeology of hysteria explains how disorders shape medical standards.

Introduction. The glycocalyx is a gel-like layer covering the membrane of many cells, especially cells of epithelial tissue. It consists of membrane-bound proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycan chains, glycoproteins, and adjacent proteins. Glycocalyx is necessary in maintaining the permeability of vessels, modulation of inflammatory responses and interactions between cells. It is also involved in cell adherence, mobility, mechanotransduction, regulation of the cell cycle and cell. Abnormalities in the structure and function of the glycocalyx underlie many diseases and disorders such as dry eyes disease, diabetes and its complications as well as sepsis. Aim. In this review, we present the current view on the role of glycocalyx in human diseases. Material and methods. This review was performed according to latest literature from the following databases: EBSCO, PubMed, Science Direct, and Springer Link. Analysis of the literature. Pathological mechanisms such as disruption of the glycocalyx barrier and decreased hydration of the ocular epithelial surface cause dry eye disease. During hyperglycaemia, glycocalyx dysfunction occurs, which leads to its dysfunction and activation of the prothrombotic system. Moreover, the increase in the concentration of hyaluronidase leads to increase in the plasma hyaluronan levels and promotion of endothelial dysfunction. Additionally, degradation of glycocalyx in sepsis prevails over increased synthesis of its components strongly favors its enhanced enzymatic degradation. Conclusion. A better understanding of glycocalyx impairment in disease could alter therapeutic strategies to improve patient outcomes.

Opis:
Specialist languages should be straightforward and unambiguous. In areas such as law, business or medicine precision and to-the-point wording is required. However, in order to facilitate the description of complicated matters, and especially in expert to non-expert communication, unexpected strategies, e.g. metaphorisation, are used. Conceptual metaphor theory, as initially introduced by Lakoff and Johnson (cf. Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) states that human beings tend to think in metaphors, i.e. we are engaged in constant search of similarities between concepts. This drive for pattern recognition helps us understand the unknown in terms of the familiar, the abstract in terms of the concrete. Most conceptual metaphors are grounded in our physical experience of the world, which means that we draw from this familiar experience while creating metaphorical mappings to the complex, abstract concepts. Controversial as it may seem, the same process applies to understanding professional terms and scientific notions, and as a result the language of law, business, medicine, etc. is heavily metaphorical in nature. In our presentation we focus on medicine alone and analyse a corpus of medical text in search of conceptual metaphors. We claim, that rather than obscuring the message, metaphors actually make it clearer and more precise. They enrich conceptualisation, structure the semantics of the message and serve a number of pragmatic functions, esp. in doctor to patient communication. By choosing a certain metaphor, the message may e.g. be softened in order to lessen the impact it has on the recipient. Moreover, it may be more easily understood if it is built on an adequate conceptual metaphor. Many metaphors used in the medical discourse are based on multimodal representations e.g. descriptions of diseases often invoke the imagery of food including its shape, colour, texture, and smell. Such multimodality of representation (cf. Forceville, 2009 and online) engages a number of cognitive faculties for the construction of a complex conceptualisation and in this way helps us gain better understanding of the concepts described. We claim that conceptual metaphor and esp. pictorial metaphor is a very effective tool used in didactics and its use is perfectly justified in scientific discourses, including the medical discourse. Therefore, in our presentation we analyse pictorial metaphors found in medical discourse and in the field of radiology in particular.

Opis:
Purpose: To investigate satisfaction of cancer patients, who have undergone cancer surgery, with nursing care and the association of patient satisfaction with demographic and clinical characteristics. Materials and methods: The study population consisted of 181 patients with cancer who have undergone surgery and were hospitalized in clinics of University General Hospital of Greece. The instrument used in the study was the «Measurement of patient satisfaction scale» (MPSS). The model of multiple linear regression was used with the method of backward stepwise linear regression. Results: The results of the study showed that patients were overall satisfied with nursing care. The areas they were less satisfied were «Resting time», «Information», «Education», «Personal preferences» and «opportunities for participation in care». The patient satisfaction had a statistically significant association with the following characteristics of the patients: (a) patient education, less educated patients showed higher levels of satisfaction (p<0.001) and (b) the hospitalization at the chemotherapy clinic, patients hospitalized at chemotherapy clinic showed higher levels of satisfaction than patients hospitalized in the other two clinics (p=0.002). Also, there was a statistically significant association between the patients education level and the item «I wish nurses have knowledge about alternative methods of dealing with some disease symptoms» (r=-0.22, p=0.003). Conclusions: The training of the nursing staff that work in clinics where patients with cancer are hospitalized, is necessary not only at a scientific level but also at a communication level. The satisfaction of surgical patients with cancer should be continually evaluated in order to assess patients’ needs, to improve poor or problematic aspects of care and to manage patients’ personalized and expressed needs.

Nuclear medicine techniques allow physicians to observe and diagnose physiology of chosen organs as well as the whole body of a patient. This visualization is possible not only because radioisotopes are applied, but there is also a significant progress in the computer software possibility. The advantage of the cooperation between medicine and informatics can be implemented in the radiation protection field of medical staff. The presented computer software, so-called Optimizer, was dedicated to the medical staff responsible for radiopharmaceutical preparation. It is known that the doses obtained in the nuclear medicine "hot labs" can be higher in comparison with the doses obtained by the rest of the personnel in the same department. The main advantage of the presented program is that the time needed for radiopharmaceutical preparation can be shortened and, as a result, the doses absorbed by personel can be reduced. The information of the volume containing planned radioactivity at the time of the application can significantly reduce the number of checking (volume and radioactivity), which normally takes place before the final handing over the radiopharmaceutical to the application. A user-friendly interface provides control at each step of the preparation protocol. For the convenience of medical staff all current examinations were coloured in one of the three colours : red (an application has to be done now), yellow (waiting) and green (done). The Optimizer was created for the Nuclear Medicine Department in the 5th Military Hospital in Kraków (Poland). What is more, currently it is successfully used and final TLD (thermoluminescent dosimetry) tests have been performed.
