Language is one of the elements that create reality. The following paper aims at showing the role of particular languages in constructing the image of disability. Speaking in a parti-cular way, people portray different items, persons etc. The process of the construction may result in shaping varied attitudes and emerging different labels. The paper is a comparison of words used in the eld of disability in two countries: Poland and the United States. The vocabulary comes from two sources: in the case of Poland it is the website niepelnosprawni.plwhile in the case of the United States – the resources of Disability History Museum, which are available online. There are two reference points for the analysis. The first one is the Stigma concept by Erving Goffman. It implies stereotyping and labeling. On the other side there is the Other – the idea by Emmanuel Levinas. In turn, the basis of his approach are respect and love. The paper aims at demonstrating in which country the vocabulary used is closer to the Levinas` theory. It is also a try to show where the usage of words may be more challenging.

Category of The Other and its instances are an obligatory element of the world’s visions constructed by social actors within many various discourses present in Polish modern social space. Discursive communities shape an attitude towards The Other that is compatible with worldview line of discourse to which they belong. The Other can be therefore perceived as The Second, coexisting beside The Yours. It can also be presented as The Stranger or even as The Enemy. This rule is valid in the nationalistic discourse where the strangeness is contrasted with hominess and it becomes one of the strategies of building the identity. It is also a strategy that places everything what is different not only beyond the discursive community’s boundaries but also beyond the national community.

The subject of the second part is the category of solidarity – its analysis has been made by referring to the sociological and axiological perspective. Aim. The aim of this paper is to discuss the possibility of adult learning by way of communicating with the representatives of other nations, cultures, and religions. Methods. The method used in the paper consists in the analysis of scholarly opinions wherein authors point out at the role of the Other human being in the process of our getting to know the world (from childhood: parents, neighbours – to the older age: people from different nations and cultures). The theory of learning introduced by Albert Bandura and Joanna Rutkowiak is utilized as a theoretical background. Results. The relation with the other can take many forms and fulfil different, albeit important in terms of education and functions. The other is a person who in numerous life situations becomes a source of knowledge for the learning adult, at the same time playing a role of a specific reference point. The recognition of the value of such resources acquires special meaning in the current situation wherein one can observe the emergence of attitudes of xenophobia and chauvinism. Moreover, learning through intercultural interactions can be seen as an effective way of gaining knowledge about the world of rapid changes. Conclusions. The paper concludes with the following questions: To what extent does the rising atmosphere of intolerance impoverish the cognitive sphere of the adult learner? In what way does the lack of acceptance of the Other destroy the field of sensitivity of the adult person? What are the prospects – given the current socio-political climate in Poland – and what kind of possibilities can be opened by the dialogical strategy of understanding Otherness?

The ethics of Emmanuel Lévinas – the idea of asymmetrical, unconditional responsibility for and devotion to the Other – is founded on the dichotomy between the Same (I) and the Other. The objective of the article is to demonstrate that, in spite of this dichotomous foundation, Lévinas’s argument paradoxically eludes the binary logic of the Western logos. Employing the ‘close reading’ method with Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence, the author shows how Lévinas’s way of thinking and the main concepts of his argument situate themselves beyond binary oppositions – in the realm of the excluded middle or, otherwise, in the realm of the Third, construed as transgression of dichotomies. The main argument is preceded by a discussion of the antinomies introduced into the I-Other relation by the appearance of the Third construed as the Third Party (le tiers).

Opis:

The subject of the article is the analysis of the notion of communality in the relation between the two protagonists of The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Traversing the post-apocalyptic landscape populated mostly by wretched savages harbouring ill intent towards other human beings, the heroes ostensibly seek a place where establishing a sustainable society composed of the “good guys” can still be possible. However, while for the young son this goal implies the necessity of maintaining a sense of openness and hospitality towards the other, for the father it is the matter of day-to-day survival that takes precedence, which leads to repeated instances of withdrawing help from destitute survivors and avoiding human contact. The boy objects to this behavior, despite being wholly dependent on his father, as his sense of responsibility seems innate and unconditional. The man, on the other hand, gradually recognizes that he was so profoundly afflicted by the experience of losing his world that he cannot overcome his radical pessimism and distrust of the other. Therefore, when the man arrives at the end of his life, he comes to understand that it is only without him at his side that the son can enter a larger community.

The author attempts to depict made the models of thinking about Different (student). Treating the student as a starfish in the holistic sense she analyzes the perceptions of Different at school by the teaching staff. The author digresses if the student is necessary for the teacher, in what aspect can the student be called a donor or a teacher’s enemy. Different develops us, encourages our creativity, or led us to intellectual and spiritual regression. Finally, the text resolves whether Different builds or destroys teacher’s identity.
Autorka podejmuje się próby nakreślenia modeli myślenia o Innym (uczniu). Traktując go jako rozgwiazdę w sensie holistycznym, dokonuje analizy sposobów postrzegania Innego (ucznia) na gruncie szkoły przez grono pedagogiczne. Rozważa następujące kwestie: Czy Inny (uczeń) jest potrzebny nauczycielowi? W jakim aspekcie można go nazwać darczyńcą, a w jakim wrogiem nauczyciela? Czy Inny (uczeń) rozwija nas, sprzyja naszej kreatywności, czy też kurczymy się przy nim w sensie intelektualnym i duchowym? Ostatecznie tekst rozstrzyga o tym, czy Inny (uczeń) buduje, czy też niszczy tożsamość nauczyciela.

The article employs the category of coloniality, a notion developed by Latin American researchers, which proved useful in the analysis of the phenomenon of racism encountered on European football stadiums. I have demonstrated that coloniality, which may be construed as a singular colonial wound or an awareness of colonialism, despite the formal abolishment of the latter, has survived until today and manifests itself in our everyday life. In the colonial era,Europefashioned itself into a centre of the world, assigning the indigenous peoples a place in the hierarchy of races. This gave rise to the modern racism and its ideologies. However, instead of theoretical deliberations concerning racism, the text offers an analysis of specific manifestations of that phenomenon. The analysis of examples of racist behaviours which are in evidence on European football stadiums (chiefly in Spain), demonstrated that unlike some of the European fans, whose notional processes are still subject to colonial paradigms, many black footballers had critically reconsidered history and, by way of cultural resistance, are capable of transcending the traditional and stigmatizing syndrome of victim, which they had been assigned by the European/colonial thinking. Thus, in a symbolic sense, they overthrow the still constricting corset of the metropolis.

In my responsibility that answers for the freedom of the other (helpless), in the astonishing human fraternity in which fraternity according the Good Samaritan, would not by itself explain the respon- sibility between separated beings it calls for. The freedom of the other (destitute) could never begin in my freedom (Samaritan). The responsibility for the other, according Lévinas, cannot have begun in my commitment, the I am here by Samaritan or in my decision. The responsibility for the other (autrui) is the locus in which is situated the nonplace of subjectivity from Samaritan to the Helpeness on the Road. In the Good Samaritan parable there is a very important relationship between the faith, mercy, and hope, according the spklancnophanic convolutions of the Samaritan. This story nnarrated by Jesus Christ is dialectically founded upon these three pillars which define a newe plesiologic aretology and refers a new poietic ethics by the new paradigm of splancnophanic aretology. And Jesus Christ des- cribes the sense of the Helpless at the Roadside (Lc 10, 25–37). In the Health Humanization there is a very significant splacnophanic deliberation because we have a role to the physician and others health technicians in the Rodside by the Helpless, tha is Jesus Christ.

In this article, I aim to reflect on the relationships between the researchers and those whom they investigate, referring to examples provided by classical biographical texts pertaining to the issues of poverty and social exclusion, i.e.: “The Polish Peasant in Europe and America” by William I. Thomas and Florian Znaniecki and “The Jack-Roller. A Delinquent Boy’s Own Story” by Clifford R. Shaw Concepts of poverty or social exclusion are both “moral” and descriptive; therefore, research in the field is particularly susceptible to social valuing processes. This notion is extremely important in biographical research, where scholars thoroughly analyse the lives of informants. The scholar-informant relationships are inscribed in the frames of Othering and meeting the Other. These stances, replicated in later years, still resonate in sociological publications, in the dimensions of individual biographies, social relations between privileged and disadvantaged groups of social actors, and institutional solutions to social problems

The recent influx of refugees has been in the headlines for more than a year in Germany. On a daily basis, new items about refugees, asylum policies, disasters, or xenophobia makes it into print, visual, or social media. Everybody has an opinion about this issue. In this essay, I record some of my own observations in this regard, as someone, who, in different ways, has been involved with refugees and “Others”. I am trying to make some sense of the discourses and actions that the so-called “refugee crisis” has produced. It has become evident that the discourse about the refugees is as much about the “Other” as it is about the “Self”. It is my argument that Germany is at a crossroads as a consequence of the arrival of relatively large numbers of refugees mainly from a Middle Eastern context – it can either lead to Germany closing in on itself, trying to exclude the “Other”, which in a globalized world would probably be a disadvantage; on the other hand, the “refugee crisis” has the potential of a new beginning, expanding on the already existing efforts to integrate “Others” into one’s own society. One example for such integration efforts would be the fairly recent introduction of Islamic Religious Education in state schools. The success or failure of this experiment can provide an indication of the willingness and ability of Germans to find constructive ways to integrate refugees into their communities.

The object of the author’s reflection is the status of the empathy category as an interdisciplinary research category and its relation to the experience issue. It is the problem that is particularly emphasized in the literary discourse, for which an indispensable context is cultural and anthropological discourse, the synthesis of which determines the transdisciplinary nature of research in the category of experience and empathy. The sketch is a cross-section of the most important thoughts that shape the postmodern reflection on these areas. First of all, the ways of the assumption applying of research on empathy - based on the ethical return - in Polish language education- was subjected to the consideration. The last part of this paper was devoted to the presentation of possible activities related to the reading of The Witcher Andrzej Sapkowski at Polish language lessons, striving to problematize the problem of the experience of otherness, and therefore the mechanisms of expanding the receiving empathic sensitivity.

The world is a stage where everything is just a thing, even man. We discover it in an intentional opening. However, if we make a dialogical opening, man is no longer an object, but becomes a subject. Here we meet man as The Other and not as Another, an alien. Where do we encounter him? On the road, at the inn. What is needed? Setting a primal distance and entering into relation, in Martin Buber’s terms, or a dialogical opening and personification, entering into language or speech, according to Józef Tischner. On the road, at the inn where everyone is another, an alien, we become the other.

The need to redefi ne Australia has been particularly urgent in the recent two decades when the image of this antipodean society as almost a model multicultural one, craving for freedom and tolerance, was demolished by growing intolerance and nationalisms. In today’s world, torn by confl icts of interests, racial hatred and social divisions, the nineteenth-century concept of a nation and national ideology, which only apparently faded away in the era of the late twentieth-century globalisation, is now being given a new prominence not just by minor politicians who want to win the favour of their electorates but by surprisingly large sections of democratic, egalitarian societies as Australia and New Zealand.

Opis:

There has been always desire/reject symptoms in literature. Literature is the sole reaction of human lives, and all literary forms especially the novels can entirely reveal passions that are universal in human nature. William Beckford’s novel Vathek is the best example of a Gothic tale seen in an orientalist lens by the western readers. In one hand Orientalism is making an “other” for “west’s” purposes. West is rejecting “the Other” because it’s far-fetched, old, backward, simple, and savage. And on the other hand the West desires this other for sexuality and shows the orient as a mad child that requires a white man to reform him. This paper aims to trace the elements of Gothicism and Orientalism in William Beckford’s novel Vathek that manifests a mirror of the old, mystic, fearful atmosphere with blurring of different ideas such as life/death, conscious/unconscious, and demonic ideas that merely exist in the orient and contain quite imperialistic intentions by creating a fear of the Orient as the Nativization terror and also desiring it.

Opis:

The presented paper is based on extensive multivariate studies conducted in some academic centres of Poland which differ in location (the centre - the borderland) and socio-economic potential. What prevails in the theoretical sphere are references to studies in the area of social psychology of development and to the idea of constructivism. The research results provide a lot of information on teacher education. On the basis of the conducted diagnoses, four dimensions of learning are indicated by the author (identity of the professional role, experiences in relations with the Other, practice, social participation) as well as the process of cogeneration. This constitutes a thought provoking material, which encourages changes in contents and methods (in the current model) of training teachers. Such an approach to teacher education seems appropriate and needed, in compliance with the critical-creative view on educational reality and striving for positive solutions to social (thus also educational) problems. The study enriches knowledge in the field of pedeutology, intercultural education, and some other areas of pedagogy (as a scientific discipline) and education (as a space of social life).

According to the philosopher of three critics, hospitality postulates the immanent sense of feeling of respect for the natural law basis of the same hospitality that presents, according to the thinker of Koenigsberg, as not being the result of any external conditions, the sensitive area, but preferably, appears as inner feeling that occurs by reason. Meanwhile, the hospitality depends on the magnitude and direction of “Practical Reason” ( Vernunft praktische ). The host comes from the exercise of moral law. The hospitality, according to the philosopher of Koenigsberg, is according to the autonomy of the will ( Wille ). However, our position relates to hospitality, the thought of pure philosophy, as a heteronomy of the Other as stranger or host. In view of Kant, the hospitality is a deontologism to the host. The Kantian abroad is not an absolutely Other, but a citizen of the world regardless of what their origin, their territorial origin. She should be treated as a person,as an end in itself. In fact, the act that constitutes the meaning of hospitality should be a motivated act rationally. The place of universal hospitality is the Earth’s surface. The common possession of the surface of the earth is therefore a right. In this Kantian hospitality there is a duty, but as understood as an expression of culture, that was expressed by Derrida.

The article aims at presenting a critical review of the book Edukacja. Migracja. Edukacja międzykulturowa w kontekście kryzysu migracyjnego z perspektywy krajów V4 [Education. Migration. Intercultural education in a context of migration crisis regarded from V4 countries perspective] edited by Emilia Kledzik and Małgorzata Parczyk and devoted to the issue of intercultural education. The review author tries to define the source of such reflection. She argues that John Dewey’s concept of education presented in his work Democracy and Education is essential for creating a contemporary model of intercultural education. The concept of the American pedagogue remains valid because it is based on viewing education as being a result of combining heritage with personal experience. It emphasises respect for otherness and the belief in universalizing different experiences, which must lead to communication. In the article author’s opinion, the reviewed book consists of texts constituting a contemporary commentary to John Dewey’s ideas.

Experience of living in borderlands is the most important Upper Silesian experience. Com-plicated geopolitical situation affects on Silesian history, local inhabitants’ identity, specific character of this place (periphery complex, pressure of ideological and cultural centres versus everyday relations with the Other, who often is homely and who is different from stereo-types disseminated by ideological centres are experienced here). Upper Silesia had to – and still has to – struggle with typical borderlands’ problems such as: borders’ inconstancy, feel-ing of homeliness, everyday relations with the Others, extreme ideologization, danger, fear, multiculturalism, other culture’s remains even after a resettlements and emigrations. All these problems are a great theme in literature about Upper Silesia, which is trying to describe and understand inconstancy and tragedy of the borderland.

The aim of this article is to show that cities are very often attacked because of their characteristic of ‘otherness’. ‘The other’ may be understood as other religion, other ethnicity, other culture, other political views or other people which is closely related to the idea of diversity, heterogeneity, pluralism and density as essential features of contemporary cities. The author examines theories explaining motives for destroying cities like the latter being a part of genocide or a distinct theory of urbicide. Finally the author proposes looking at the destruction of cities through the lens of destroying ‘the other’ and the possibility of a community. The research methods used include desk research and formal-legal analysis. Formal-legal analysis focuses on the jurisprudence of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the desk research on the relevant literature at the intersection of urban studies and international studies.
Celem artykułu jest pokazanie, że miasta są bardzo często atakowane ze względu na swoją cechę „inności”. Przez „innego” można rozumieć inną religię, inną etniczność, inną kulturę, inne poglądy polityczne lub inne osoby, co jest ściśle związane z ideą różnorodności, heterogeniczności, pluralizmu i gęstości jako istotnych cech współczesnych miast. Autorka analizuje teorie wyjaśniające motywy niszczenia miast, takie jak te traktujące niszczenie miast jako część ludobójstwa lub jak odrębna teoria miastobójstwa. Wreszcie autorka proponuje spojrzenie na niszczenie miast przez pryzmat niszczenia „innego” i możliwości wspólnoty. Wykorzystywane metody badawcze to analiza treści oraz analiza formalno-prawna. Analiza formalno-prawna koncentruje się na orzecznictwie Międzynarodowego Trybunału Karnego do spraw Zbrodni w b. Jugosławii, a analiza treści na relewantnej literaturze z pogranicza studiów miejskich i studiów międzynarodowych.

A Year in the Sahel by Eugène Fromentin is a travelogue in which the representation of Otherness is based on a number of complex artistic images whose genesis is the Western imagination of women and the Orient in the nineteenth century. The Other is represented in a series of four portraits which constitute an interesting subject for study.To do this, we call on the concepts of Imagology and Interartiality in order to answer the following two questions: how the Other is represented by Eugène Fromentin? and what are the socio-historical issues of this representation?

The article constitutes an attempt at analysing the role of the image of a real and a symbolic father in Aleksander Wat’s work. The point of the departure is a reflection upon the issue of avant-garde gesture of breaking off with the past and identity through a change of a family name from Chwat to Wat. The problem of misunderstanding resulting from the use of different languages forms the basis of the relationship between Wat and his father and serves as the background for the proposed interpretation, whose figure becomes the Tower of Babel. The image which emerges from the analyses of the poems composed by the author of Buchalteria, and especially from the fragments of his journal, is one of the “voice of the Father,” tormenting the writer, which has a close connection with the return of the suppressed Jewish identity.

The article studies different forms of identity representation in contemporary Ukrainian poetry using as an example the texts of Iryna Shuvalova. Shuvalova’s poetry is discussed in a liaison with ideological and artistic changes in a literary process from the late Soviet era till post-Independent times. The article examines the process of identity building based on interaction between the Self / the Other, the private and the national, the female and the male. Besides that, the article investigates interconnections between language, corporeality, and time, which are conceptualized as different forms of identity building.
W artykule przedmiotem badania uczyniono różne formy reprezentacji tożsamości obecne na gruncie współczesnej poezji ukraińskiej. Za przykład posłużyły teksty Iryny Szuwałowej. Tworzona przez nią poezja rozpatrywana jest w kontekście przemian ideologicznych i artystycznych, jakie zaszły w literaturze w okresie od schyłku Związku Radzieckiego do czasów współczesnych. W artykule skupiono się na procesie tworzenia tożsamości opierającym się na interakcjach zachodzących między Swoim i Obcym, jednostkowym i społecznym, żeńskim i męskim. Ponadto celem autorki stało się prześledzenie związków istniejących między językiem, cielesnością a czasem, reprezentujących różne formy tworzenia tożsamości.

In the late medieval N-Town Cycle Passion Plays, the trial of Jesus is presented in the context of a medieval courtroom, where Jesus is brought by Annas and Cayphas to be judged by Pontius Pilate. However, while the priests through abuses of the legal procedures attempt to ensure Jesus’s demise, Pilate opposes their intent by remaining true to his judicial duties, which presents him as a lonely Other in the presented world of legal misconduct. This paper explores the concept of otherness in a legal context of the plays, as well as the legal and social significance of Pilate’s actions.

The objective of this paper is to show main difficulties in the intercultural translation process which has been taking place during the Discovery and the Conquest of the New World, in the 15th and 16th centuries. These historical facts are considered as a metaphor of translation in general, and letters, chronicles and histories of some Spanish authors of that period are analyzed as examples of interpretation / translation based on their eurocentric and Christian background. Finally, domestication of the New Spain culture is indicated as a main translation strategy and a confrontation of cultures rather than dialogue is stressed as a general feature of the cultural contact.

Opis:

Space of meeting with the Other, the space of interaction is also space a build identity. Thanks for the presence of the Other, it creates the identity both individual and group (J. Tischner, 1978, 2012). The Other is therefore an important fi gure in the development of another human being. So what do the other people think about the Other? How do you determine the Other? What are the trends in thinking about the Other? How do perceived the Other by future educators? This is an important question. So I decided to ask about questions my students, future teachers. Hence, the purpose of this article is to present ways of thinking about the Other, different perspectives seeing the Other by students Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa. This objective implies some goals: stimulating interest in problems of the Other, the idea of the tendencies of thinking about the Other, stimulating reflection on the significance of the Other for the development of a specific person, but also for the development of society, to realize their own perception of the Other.
Przestrzeń spotkania z Innym, przestrzeń interakcji jest jednocześnie przestrzenią budowania tożsamości. To dzięki obecności Innego tworzy się tożsamość, zarówno w wymiarze indywidualnym, jak i grupowym (J. Tischner, 1978, 2012). Inny jest więc ważną postacią w rozwoju drugiego człowieka. Co zatem o Innym myślą inni ludzie? Jak go określają? Jakie są tendencje w myśleniu o Innym? Jak Innego postrzegają przyszli pedagodzy? To ważne pytania. Dlatego postanowiłam o powyższe kwestie zapytać moich studentów, przyszłych pedagogów. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie sposobów myślenia o Innym, zaprezentowanie różnych perspektyw widzenia Innego przez studentów Akademii im. Jana Długosza w Częstochowie. Cel ten implikuje kolejne cele (dydaktyczne): wzbudzenie zainteresowania problematyką Innego, zorientowanie w tendencjach myślenia o Innym, wzbudzenie refl eksji na temat znaczenia Innego dla rozwoju konkretnej osoby, ale i dla rozwoju społeczeństwa, uświadomienie własnego postrzegania Innego.

The objective is to prove the thesis that due to its particular nature, global reality does not tolerate the dichotomy of us vs. them. Also, it is not invalidated by the awareness that one’s own and the alien are more con-tiguous and permeate one another to a greater extent than ever before. The only elements which do change are the contexts surrounding that distinction and the tools of its production and dissemination. Within the consciousness, in the social notions and structures of knowledge, the post-colonial era remains profoundly colonial.

The author presents a series of lessons on the novels: Arka Czasu by Marcin Szczygielski and Kot Karima i obrazki by Liliana Bardijewska. The analysis is based on literary research on the structural similarities between the figures of a Jew and a refugee in children's literature. The article presents varied exercises which support study on literary texts and engage students in their searching for the sense of works. The aim of contextual reading of both novels is to stimulate young readers to reflect on memory, responsibility and repetition of events and relationship with the Other.

Opis:

The legendary relation between Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre was based on a specific communion of the two existentialists’ souls and bodies. It is Sartre that is generally considered to be the spiritual guide of this duo and that is why his role should be approached with caution in order to show that Beauvoir was by no means an epigone of her master. A contrario, it is the inspiration stemming from her literary output that can be found in a handful of works authored by the founder of Les Temps modernes (Modern Times). This impact is particularly conspicuous in the play entitled Dirty Hands, referring to The Second Sex, in which the author reflects on the concept of myth and shows his interest in women’s authorship. Thus, the literary output of Beauvoir and Sartre, two strong personalities of uncommon talent characterised by sameness and dissimilarity, proves their mutual admiration for their partner’s achievements and their acceptance of the other. Taking this aspect into account, reading their works from an intertextual point of view appears to be extremely fascinating.
Le pacte légendaire de Simone de Beauvoir et Jean-Paul Sartre se fondait sur une connivence intellectuelle et affective entre eux deux. Étant donné que d’habitude Sartre était considéré comme le guide spirituel de ce duo, cela vaut la peine de relativiser le rôle du philosophe pour montrer que Beauvoir n’était aucunement au miroir de son maître. A contrario, ce sont les traces de son inspiration que l’on retrouve dans certains textes du fondateur de la revue Les Temps modernes. Cette influence se fait ressentir avant tout dans la pièce Les Mains sales, se référant au Deuxième Sexe, où l’auteur se rapporte à la notion de mythe, tout en manifestant son intérêt pour, et par, l’écriture au féminin. Ainsi, l’œuvre de Beauvoir et Sartre, deux personnalités fortes, d’un talent inédit, des consciences, à la fois, jumelles et différentes, prouve non seulement leur admiration réciproque pour leur travail respectif, mais aussi l’acceptation de l’autre. En témoignent leurs ouvrages, lus dans la perspective intertextuelle.

This paper deals with a common perception of the Other as a threat for a dialogue expressed by students and teachers in a general education inclusive classroom. This assumption is however governed by natural brain reflexes interpreted by culture and society. This reason has been deeply covered with modern discussions about normalcy because nature as philosophical problem has been eliminated by pragmatic mind. This study explores modern discussions about the Other, nature and language. The article posits an argument that the Other is a natural element to develop any meaningful dialogue. Artykuł jest teoretycznym studium nad INNYM w perspektywie edukacyjnej i codziennego życia szkoły. Treść artykułu dowodzi, że edukacyjne badania społeczne skoncentrowane na INNYM muszą mieć charakter interdyscyplinarny i opierać się na osiągnięciach współczesnej neuropsychologii, andragogiki, pedagogiki specjalnej, etnografii i filozofii (por. Rzeźnicka-Krupa 2007; Krause 2010). Terenem prowadzonych rozważań jest szkoła powszechna oraz uczniowie i nauczyciele klas włączających. Autorka dowodzi, że INNY w tym środowisku jest odbierany jako zagrożenie, a argumentacja filozoficzna wskazuje, że sensowny dialog z INNYM jest możliwy tylko przy jego pełnym udziale w procesie inkluzji. Autorka przedstawia argumenty odkrywające genezę tego poczucia zagrożenia zarówno u INNEGO, nauczycieli, jak i uczniów. Zdaniem Autorki wynika ono z wielowiekowej dominacji rozumu pragmatycznego i techniki jako narzędzia wykorzystywanego do panowania nad naturą/przyrodą, a w konsekwencji wyłączenia z dyskursu publicznego i naukowego emocji, takich jak strach, niepewność, lęk, które traktowane są jako wychodzące poza normalność. Poczucie zagrożenia odczuwane przez uczestników życia szkolnego uwarunkowane jest odruchem orientacyjnym, a reakcja na niego jest zinterpretowana przez kulturę danego społeczeństwa. Jednocześnie, jak dowodzi Autorka, w klasie szkolnej potrzeby „zrozumienia” dotyczą tylko zrozumienia na poziomie umysłu, a wykazują tendencje do niezrozumienia mowy ciała (jak np.: gestów, mimiki twarzy, sposobu poruszania się). Autorka proponuje wykorzystanie metod badań etnograficznych pozwalających na uwzględnienie i interpretację mowy ciała, wypowiedzianych słów, odczytywanie niedomówień i za pomocą terapii kulturowej pomaga uczestnikom badań nawiązać wspólny dialog. Artykuł nawiązuje do rozważań na temat Innego, przyrody, roli nauczyciela oraz języka i jest zaproszeniem do interdyscyplinarnych dyskusji.

Opis:

Ideas of Australia being invaded by a foreign ‘Other’ have been present throughout much of its history and this legacy is still present today. My paper will reveal the red thread of control that runs through Australia’s attitude and policy towards asylum seekers since European arrival. Claims of current restrictions against asylum seekers being mere Islamophobia ignore this history. From the grudging admission of Jewish refugees during times of Nazi oppression to quotas placed on certain nationalities and later draconian punishments for those claiming asylum without a prior visa, control of the ‘Other’ has been a constant theme, with current policies of mandatory detention and off shore processing on far away Pacific islands separating the Australian ‘Self’ from the foreign ‘Other.’

The paper aims at discussing the problem of adaptation of newcomers who originate form distant cultures. W szczególności jego celem jest analiza kulturowych determinant adaptacji, przy uwzględnieniu kluczowej dla tego wymiaru badań koncepcji „innego” („obcego”). Szerszy kontekst prowadzonej analizy stanowią studia poświęcone kulturowym determinantom migracji i adaptacji. Sama zaś analiza skupia się na problemach związanych z migracją Muzułmanów do krajów Unii Europejskiej. Artykuł wieńczy przegląd głównych stanowisk w debacie o migracji.

Many postcolonial readings of fantasy fiction focus on exploring complicated relationships between different fantastic races that inhabit a certain secondary world. However, such studies often overlook interactions of these races with the supernatural animals and beasts that live alongside them. Fantasy narratives like Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher Saga and George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire depict fantastic settings where the relationship between the inhabitants of the world and the supernatural creatures is just as important as the interracial relations because it is based on similar principles of interaction between the Familiar and the Other and can be used to characterize them. Therefore, this article will address the following issues: how the supernatural creatures are perceived in their respective secondary worlds; what attitude prevails in this perception; and why it prevails above other reactions.

Celem poniższego artykułu jest prześledzenie granic oraz metod wykorzystywanych w fenomenologii ejdetycznej związanych z dostępem do samego sposobu ukazywania sensu fenomenów. Zadanie to przeprowadzone jest na przykładzie fenomenologii obecnej w pismach Emmanuela Lévinasa. Szczególnym przykładem tego typu sytuacji jest relacja odpowiedzialności Tego-samego (Tożsamego) wobec Innego, przyjmująca postać substytucji, w wykładni fenomenologii transcendencji francuskiego fenomenologa. Wraz z narastającymi etycznymi wymogami filozofii transcendencji, jako konsekwencji radykalnej ontologii Lévinasa, sens „Innego we mnie” niebezpiecznie zbliża się do figury wewnętrznego samooskarżyciela, który staje się metaforą obecnej w jego pismach figury etycznej przemocy i odwetu Innego wobec Tożsamego. Odczytuję tu głęboko ukryte, także dla samego Lévinasa, resentymentalne motywy duchowości, z której on sam wyrósł. Z jednej strony bowiem jego filozofia dąży do tego, aby wykluczyć samą możliwość ponownego pojawienia się wydarzenia Auschwitz, jednak z drugiej strony sama staje się napędem takiego sposobu myślenia.
The purpose of the following article is to trace the boundaries and methods used in eidetic phenomenology related to the access to the very method of showing the sense of phenomena, carried out on the example of phenomenology present in Emmanuel Lévinas’ writings. A special and extreme example of this type of situation is the “relations” of The-Same (identical) responsibility towards the Other, taking the form of substitution, in a radical interpretation of the French phenomenologist’s phenomenology of transcendence. However, with the increasing ethical requirements of the philosophy of transcendence, as a consequence of Lévinas’s equally radical ontology, the sense of the Other-in-myself dangerously approaches the figure of the internal self-prosecutor, who becomes the metaphor of the current in his writings figure of the ethical violence and retaliation of the Other towards the Same. I perceive here deeply hidden, also for Lévinas, resentimental motifs of the spirituality in which he grew up. On the one hand, Lévinas’s philosophy strives to exclude the possibility of the re-emergence of the Auschwitz event, but on the other, it becomes the driving force behind this thinking.

W artykule staram się odtworzyć przedstawiany w podręcznikach gimnazjalnych obraz Innego. Interesuje mnie sposób, w jaki autorzy wpisują w kreowany przez podręcznik obraz świata motywy obcości czy odmienności kulturowej. Analiza pięciu serii podręczników prowadzi do wniosku, że wizerunek obcego włączany jest najczęściej w oficjalną narrację patriotyczną, a podsuwane uczniom obrazy „inności” nie przystają do współczesnych realiów cywilizacyjnych. Trudno oprzeć się wrażeniu, że dydaktyka szkolna zatrzymała się na XIX-wiecznej koncepcji narodu i utrwalonych w ówczesnej kulturze świadectwach doświadczania obcości. Nie można zatem powiedzieć, że polska szkoła przygotowuje uczniów do życia w wielokulturowym społeczeństwie.
In the article I attempt to reconstruct the image of ‘the Other’ as presented in middle school textbooks. I am interested in how the authors introduce the motifs of otherness and cultural differences in the world as presented by the textbook. My analysis of five textbook series leads me to conclude that the image of ‘the Other’ is usually presented in contrast to patriotism developed by the official patriotic narrative and that the visions of ‘otherness’ shown to students are very different from the reality of the contemporary civilisation. It is difficult to resist the conclusion that school didactics have not moved beyond cultivating the 19th century concept of nation and beyond the outdated evidence of experiencing otherness developed in that culture. One cannot state with conviction that the education in Polish schools prepares the students for living in a multicultural society.

The most tragic and traumatic experiences in the respective histories of Ireland and Ukraine were their Great Famines. This paper discusses literary techniques used for the expression of national trauma in Irish and Ukrainian famine fictions. It examines the representations of An Gorta Mór and the Holodomor in The Silent People by Walter Macken, The Hungry Land by Michael Mullen, Maria: A Chronicle of a Life by Ulas Samchuk and Sweet Snow by Alexander J. Motyl, and demonstrates that the rhetoric of a national character occupies a prominent position in the novels. Exploring images of the Self and the Other within the oppressor/oppressed dichotomy, expressed from the perspective of the latter, the paper argues that national character stereotypes function to highlight the detrimental effects of British rule in Ireland and Soviet rule in Ukraine. Imagology and trauma studies underpin the paper’s theoretical framework. The paper is part of the doctoral thesis An Imagological Study of the Depiction of the Irish and Ukrainian Great Famines in the novels by Samchuk, Macken, Motyl and Mullen, supervised by Dr. Brigitte Le Juez and Dr. Áine McGillicuddy, defended in December 2018 at Dublin City University.

The article analyses the way in which Western ethnocentrism perceives the otherness revealed through the ‘discovery’ of the New World. One of the first neologisms to be coined by the expansion in the New Worldis the word “cannibal” which, as a cultural trope establishes the manner of understanding Others. Therefore, in the history of Latin American culture, cannibal should be rather associated with thinking and notions than with eating. The figure of the cannibal became one of the most obsessive and recurrent topes of Latin America, which dominated the colonial discourse about the Other. Although at the beginning of the conquest „cannibal” was employed with regard to the natives due to their barbarity, with the advance of colonisation the term began to denote Indians who resisted colonisation on the areas where workforce was in short supply. Thus the matter of cannibalism is less and less an issue related to the consumption of human flesh by Indians, and more and more a consumption of the workforce by the encomenderos.  The testimony of such Europeans as Hans Staden, André Thevet and Jean de Léry, who spend some time among the Brazilian Tupinamba Indians in the latter half of the 16th century, prove that the ways in which cannibalism was presented have little to do with pure ethnography, whereas the expansion of the European trade capitalism becomes the core context. The relations of those travellers make a distinction between tribes considered to be allies, whose anthropophagy is presented as ritual, and the hostile tribes from outside the trade, whose cannibalism is motivated by sheer pleasure of eating human flesh.   In the early 19th century, when the Latin American countries gained independence, the cannibal trope is still present in the reality of the continent, albeit in a mutated form. In the 20th century the cannibal trope is replaced by the metaphor of Kaliban, which symbolizes that which is Latin American.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the link between understanding another person and understanding the Self in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness – a complex novella which raises a whole array of themes connected with human nature and the consequences of the lack of an established frame of reference. In a world where individual subjective consciousness appears to be not only the basic means of cognizance, but also the sole judge, Man is isolated from others and overwhelmed by the dark forces which seem to govern a hostile universe and also his own nature. The possibilities of arriving at any conclusive truths and achieving genuine communication with others are severely limited. However, the disquieting awareness of mortality, the darkness inherent in human nature, the apparent hostility of the universe, the dire lack of universal absolutes and the relativism and scepticism which result from all these circumstances do not in any way exempt us from the moral obligation to at least strive to fulfil the injunction “Know thyself!” – as it is self-delusion that Conrad abhors most of all. In order to overcome these difficulties and existential dilemmas, he proposes a set of simple principles concerning work, discipline, self-restraint, honour, solidarity and human interdependence, for it is usually because of others or in others that we realize the truth about our own nature.

In the article, Lesia Ukrainka’s poetry based on the Jewish cultural motifs and archetypal plots, mainly of biblical genesis, has been studied. Selected poems are being examined through the lens of imagology and gender theory. The author emphasizes gender nuancing of the Jewish theme developed in the poetry. In the study, the noticeable imagological, and gender aspects are being considered as follows: the legitimation of national identity by gender interactions; a detection of mothers’ competition under the patriarchal pressure; the discourse of a gender communicative abyss; the equalization, and the abolition of gender restrictions in order to create the idea of a person of integrity regardless gender values. In conclusion, it should be noted that the intricate social history of the Hebrew women is being transposed into Ukrainian modernity in Lesia Ukrainka’s poetry.
Artykuł analizuje teksty poetyckie Łesi Ukrainki stworzone na podstawie kulturowych motywów żydowskich i tematów archetypowych, głównie genezy biblijnej. Wybrane wiersze są badane przez pryzmat imagologii oraz zasad teorii gender. Podkreśla się, że w percepcji poetyckiej pisarza temat żydowski ma cechy charakterystyczne gender. Autorka zbadała następujące kwestie imagologiczne i genderowe: legitymizację inności narodowej poprzez interakcje genderowe pomiędzy mężczyzną a kobietą, ujawnienie konkurencji interpersonalnej matek pod presją społeczeństwa patriarchalnego, dyskurs otchłani komunikacyjnej między genderami, wyrównanie i zniesienie ograniczeń genderowych w celu sformułowania koncepcji osoby holistycznej itd. W podsumowaniu stwierdzono, iż skomplikowana historia kobiet starożytnego społeczeństwa żydowskiego w poezji Łesi Ukrainki znajduje swoje odzwierciedlenie w ukraińskiej współczesności.

W ostatnich dekadach termin „dialog”, jako kategoria komunikacyjna, jest używany bardzo często; rzec można, że nadużywany. Wraz z intensyfikacją procesów migracji i upowszechnianiem się zjawiska wielokulturowości ugruntowuje się przekonanie o jego ważności i niezbędności. Owo powszechne użycie dialogu sprawia, że zatraca on swoją pojęciową ostrość i znaczeniową precyzję. Używany przez wszystkich, wszędzie i na każdą okoliczność coraz częściej staje się synonimem zwykłej rozmowy, a nawet kłótni. Uznano zatem za właściwe poszukiwanie na gruncie filozofii spotkania ram organizujących strukturę dialogu i warunków, które winny być spełnione, by zgodnie z wolą Martina Bubera mówić o dialogu autentycznym. W tekście starano się wykazać, jak istotna w dialogicznym kontakcie z Innym jest postawa etyczna, rozumiana jako źródłowy fundament porozumienia z drugim człowiekiem. Dialog jest ukazany jako forma trudna i wymagająca, a jednocześnie możliwa i konieczna.
In the last couple of decades the term ‘dialogue’ as a communication category has been used increasingly more often, to the extent of being overused. As migration processes intensify and multiculturalism becomes more widespread, the belief in the importance and indispensability of dialogue gains ground. The popular use of dialogue causes it to lose its notional preciseness. Employed by everyone, everywhere and for every occasion, dialogue increasingly becomes a synonym for ordinary conversation or even for a dispute. I have therefore considered it proper to seek, within the realm of the philosophy of encounter, the framework for the structure of dialogue and the conditions that would be to need to be fulfilled for, as Martin Buber intended it, the dialogue to dialogue to be authentic. The article attempts to show how important an ethical attitude, understood as the foundation of interpersonal agreement, is in the dialogical contact with the Other. Dialogue is presented as a difficult and demanding framework which is, at the same time, possible and indeed necessary.

The aim of the article is to depict different ways of creating Japan-related cultural stereotypes in the travelers’ and fans’ written works. Special attention was devoted to the publications available for the Polish readers. The author starts with analysing the reasons why the writers use stereotypes to describe their experiences. Furthermore, she briefly summarizes the origins of the mentioned stereotypes in the literature. In the next parts of the article, the author describes the phenomenon of the “comparison trap” – what can be observed in the stories illustrating  meetings with the Other. As the main examples of works dealing with the problem of stereotypes about Japan, the author analyses Powrót niedoskonały [Imperfect return] by Marcin Bruczkowski and the publications of Joanna Bator.
Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie różnorodności sposobów kreowania stereotypów japońskości w relacjach podróżniczych i fanowskich, ze szczególnym naciskiem na publikacje dostępne polskiemu czytelnikowi. Autorka wychodzi od przywołania powodów opierania wyżej wymienionych narracji na stereotypach kulturowych oraz zwięzłego przytoczenia genezy zjawiska w literaturze światowej. W kolejnych częściach artykułu opisuje zjawisko „pułapki porównań”, dającej się zaobserwować w relacjach podróżniczych traktujących o spotkaniu z Innym. Jako główne przykłady analizy autorka przywołuje fabularyzowaną narrację Powrót niedoskonały Marcina Bruczkowskiego oraz publikacje Joanny Bator.

The other (alter), through the lens of Levinas`s criticism of the same (neutrum), is always a unique other who stands up to any generalisation and homogenisation. According to a heteronomous schedule of ethics by E. Levinas, “face of the other”, presence of their personal Thou in the sphere of life of a moral subject, precedes own being of this subject by their calling for an answer. Uniqueness of interpersonal relationship and appeal of the exterior Thou challenges human to exclusivity and to infinite self-abandonment in favour of the other (challenges to love). This ethical horizon is not possible to be ever reached and closed, it is impossible in fact, too difficult to be accepted as a norm of everyday life, mainly life in a community, society, state. Presence of “the third” (the political) in the sphere of morality is posed as a theoretical problem: What kind of ethics should be designed in a society of many “others” where Thou is inevitably turned to He/She, included in socio-political structures and relationships of justice? Is it possible to talk about some continuum between the relationship to the other and the relationship to a community? The final part of the paper seeks to answer these questions and pedagogical implications of demands of love in moral education are pointed out.

The world is constantly becoming more multicultural in the sense of positive coexistence of dissimilarities. Contemporary teachers live and work in multicultural communities – are they properly prepared for new work conditions? The present paper aims at discussing What Sunny Saw in the Flames by Nnedi Okorafor as a fantasy novel for children and young adults focused upon the question of self-identification. In the framework of fiction for younger audiences, the fantasy mode becomes a tool which allows to examine the topics important to young readers, such as identity and their place within the society, by providing a confrontation with the Other. The example of Nnedi Okorafor’s book, known in the USA as Akata Witch, shows how the instrumentation of a fantasy novel enables an exposition of the process in which the protagonist grows on the intellectual, emotional and cultural levels. In other words, the fantasy mode aids in the exploration of Sunny’s American-Nigerian origin, her albinism, coming of age and the comprehension of her identity. Simultaneously, as additional topics emerge from the analysis, it becomes visible that the question of the Self cannot be separated from the concept of the Other, with the lesson of empathy and respect for what is different.

Prezentowany poniżej tekst dotyczy analiz światopoglądu w zakresie konceptu Inności młodego pokolenia Polaków. Poddano analizie wypowiedzi studentów. Przedmiotem analiz jest obszar kategoryzacji Inności w zakresie motywów, założeń i intencji. Za pomocą metody badawczej zogniskowanego wywiadu grupowego zebrano opinie, które analizowano w kierunku założeń i kategoryzacji czynionych przez badanych. Kluczem operacjonalizacji danych zebranych w procesie postępowania badawczego nie jest analiza treści wyrażanych opinii ale przewidywanie kategorii mentalnych organizujących myślenie i decyzje, budujące ich stosunek do imigrantów. Podłożem teoretycznym przeprowadzonych badań jest teoria standardu kulturowego Krzysztofa J. Broziego oraz teoria kontaktu międzykulturowego.
The following text deals with analyses of the worldview regarding the concept of the Otherness of the young generation of Poles. Students’ statements were analysed. The subject of the analyses is the area of categorization of the Otherness in terms of motives, assumptions and intentions. By means of the focus group interview method, opinions were collected and analysed in terms of the assumptions and categorization made by the respondents. The key to operationalisation of the data collected in the research process is not to analyse the content of the opinions expressed but to predict mental categories that organise the thinking and decisions that build their relationship to immigrants. The theoretical basis of the research is Krzysztof J. Brozi’s theory of cultural standard and the theory of intercultural contact.

Opis:

The paper confronts Georg Simmel’s distinction between the dyad and the triad with the phenomenological analysis of analogous structures undertaken by E. Lévinas, B. Waldenfels, and J.-L. Marion. Simmel insists on keeping the dyad and the triad apart while only the triad is considered worthy of sociological research. On the contrary, phenomenologists reveal deep interrelation between the relationship with the other and the third party where the latter is actually co-present in the dyad. The presupposed link between the two and the three implies a different understanding of sociality that would respect its members in their uniqueness, unlike the world of interchangeable individualities common for social science. The third party can appear as the dimension of law and the ordinary (in Waldenfels), as the other of the other and the figure of humanity (in Lévinas), or as the child in the case of erotic relationship (in Marion). The last aspect of the third party provides a link to family studies. A brief outline of the situation illustrates oscillation between the triadic and dyadic interpretations of the family with the apparent prevalence of the dyad in recent decades.

The issue of the article refers to the research on literary and cultural-literary education, which emphasizes the values of dialogue and interaction in the process of educating reading skills. According to theoretical assumptions, the category of the “Other” plays a significant role in such a recognized reading model. Its application in reference to literature as a medium open to communication and motivating to show various forms of activity, is confirmed in many currents of contemporary humanities. The problematic issue is a source of inspiration for the examples and educational reflections on the topic of student support discussed in the text – with the participation of literary texts (and other cultural texts) – in acquiring cognitive, ethical, narrative, communication and information competences important to their development, etc.
Problematyka artykułu nawiązuje do badań nad literaturą i edukacją kulturowo-literacką, które eksponują walory dialogu i interakcji w procesie kształcenia umiejętności lekturowych. Zgodnie z teoretycznymi założeniami znaczącą rolę w tak ujmowanym modelu czytania odgrywa kategoria Innego. Jej stosowanie w odniesieniu do literatury, jako medium otwartego na komunikację i motywującego do wykazywania różnych form aktywności, znajduje potwierdzenie w wielu nurtach współczesnej humanistyki. Sygnalizowana problematyka stanowi źródło inspiracji dla omówionych w tekście przykładów i refleksji edukacyjnych na temat wspierania uczniów – przy udziale tekstów literackich (i innych tekstów kultury) – w zdobywaniu ważnych dla ich rozwoju kompetencji poznawczych, etycznych, narracyjnych, komunikacyjno-informacyjnych itd.

„The black lovers club”. The impact of language on social perception of black people with the example of opinion-forming potential of metaphors

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie opiniotwórczej siły  metafor w kontekście społecznego postrzegania osób czarnoskórych. Metafory odnoszące się do koloru czarnego to jedna z najczęstszych figur retorycznych występujących w wypowiedziach na temat przybywających do Europy Afroamerykanów czy imigrantów z Afryki. Wychodząc z założenia, że język wpływa na światopogląd mówiącego, autorki podejmują próbę wykazania, w jaki sposób „metafory czerni” mogą wpływać na kształtowanie się negatywnego nastawienia do osób czarnoskórych, a w konsekwencji wzmacniać zjawisko rasizmu. Autorki odwołują się do teorii metafor pojęciowych i procesów poznawczych, badanych przez językoznawstwo kognitywne,  oraz zagadnień międzykulturowych. Ponadto wskazują na konieczność wyeliminowania pewnych wyrażeń z języka potocznego, gdyż pejoratywne słowa opisujące Innych (np. „metafory czerni”) mogą wpływać na kształtowanie się utartych wzorców  myślenia u dzieci na temat osób odmiennych kulturowo.
The aim of this article is to explore the issue of opinion-forming potential of metaphors in the context of social perception of black people. Metaphors concerning black colour are one of the most common figures of speech that are present in statements on Afro-Americans or black immigrants from Africa arriving in Europe. Drawing on the assumption that language affects its speaker’s worldview, the authors attempt to show how ‘black metaphors’ may result in developing a negative attitude towards black people and, consequently, enhance racism. The authors refer to metaphor and cognitive processes theory as well as intercultural issues.The authors point to the necessity of eliminating certain expressions from everyday language. Pejorative words describing the Others (e.g. ‘black metaphors’) are likely to influence children’s thinking patterns on culturally different persons.

This article is a follow-up of the essay Alan Kurdi’s Online Resurrections published in the previous issue of the ‘Cultural Studies Appendix’ (3/2016). This time the author analyzes the remakes of the widely shared shot of Omran Daqneesh – a 5-years old Syrian boy sitting in the ambulance and fully covered by dust with seeable traces of brushes and stains of blood – taken from the viral footage which reported damages and sufferings caused by the airstrikes on the Syrian biggest city, Aleppo, during the civil war. For once the author discusses not only the visual rhetoric strategies applied in those remakes, but also their ethical dimensions, especially in reference to the category of ‘unrepresentability’ connected with the concept of the ‘limit situations’.

Opis:

The main task which I pose for myself is to indicate the philosophical roots of the dialogical concept of law. First and foremost, I would like to present dialogue in the context of ancient Greek philosophy and in the context of the classicists of the philosophy of dialogue. Furthermore, I seek phenomenological bases for constructing the dialogical concept of law. The phenomenological method, starting with its classical Husserlian form, has undergone many changes. Thanks to the indication of new horizons of phenomenology by Emmanuel Levinas, discovering dialogical consciousness and the subject constituted in being with the Other are possible. The reference point of reflections on the concept of law is the relationship with the Other as an ethical relationship. Philosophy of dialogue is a certain possible prism of thinking about the social, public, and institutional space. It is thinking through the prism of dialogue (speaking), but also through the third who contributes discourse relevant to what is said. Law as the third, as the mediating element, is a co-constituting element of the entire legal world.

Opis:

The paper portrays various aspects of Otherness included in the Harry Potter cycle by J.K. Rowling, focusing on the villain – Lord Voldermort. By Otherness of the character, the author of the report means the interference of the forces triggered by him that disturbs the established order in the presented world. The character’s predisposition, deeds and goals pose a threat to two planes which he contacts with: magical and non-magical ones. He combines features that are known and unknown to the others: he is and is not a human being at the same time. Additionally, the paper depicts the villain’s Otherness which has a dynamic nature. Over the course of the plot, the figure undergoes A metamorphosis and evolves in his Otherness which is built upon three basic spheres concerning the name, the body, and the soul. This is particularly noticeable in the aspect of his life and passing. In order to avoid death, which frightens him, he decides to split his soul into several parts (Horcruxes). This is meant to ensure his immortality. As a result, his soul as well as his material body is destroyed. However, he does not die ultimately. Although Voldermort remains in the world of the living, he is neither a human being nor a spirit. The conception of the villain’s soul indicates its independence from the flesh. After his downfall Voldermort enters other beings’ bodies to be his temporal Horcruxes. Using their obedience, he manipulates them to regain his lost power and body. All in all, it is character’s inability to love that ultimately proves his state of Otherness.
Artykuł przedstawia różnorodne aspekty Inności zawarte w cyklu powieści Harry Potter, skupiając się na czarnym charakterze – Lordzie Voldemorcie. Pisząc o Inności bohatera, autorka tekstu ma na myśli interferencję uruchomionych przez niego sił, które zakłócają ustalony w przedstawionym świecie porządek. Skłonności, czyny oraz cele postaci stanowią zagrożenie dla dwóch płaszczyzn, z którymi ma styczność – magiczną i nie-magiczną. Łączy w sobie cechy, które są znane i obce innym: jednocześnie jest i nie jest istotą ludzką. Ponadto artykuł przedstawia dynamiczną naturę Inności czarnego charakteru. Wraz z rozwojem wydarzeń postać przechodzi metamorfozę i ewoluuje w swojej Inności ukształtowanej w obrębie trzech podstawowych sfer dotyczących imienia, ciała i duszy. Jest to szczególnie dostrzegalne w aspekcie jego życia i umierania. By uniknąć przerażającej go śmierci, bohater decyduje się rozszczepić duszę na kilka części (Horkruksy). Zabieg ten ma na celu zapewnienie mu nieśmiertelności. W efekcie zarówno jego dusza, jak i ciało zostają zniszczone. Niemniej jednak, nie umiera on całkowicie. Mimo że Voldemort pozostaje obecny w świecie żywych, nie jest ani człowiekiem, ani duchem. Koncepcja duszy czarnego charakteru wskazuje na jej niezależność od ciała. Po swoim upadku Voldemort wstępuje w ciała innych osobników, które są jego przejściowymi Horkruksami. Wykorzystując ich posłuszeństwo, manipuluje nimi, by odzyskać swoją utraconą siłę i ciało. Ogólnie rzecz ujmując: to nieumiejętność kochania dowodzi jego Inności.

Obcowanie z innością jest wpisane w kondycję współczesnego człowieka. Na co dzień napotyka on na odmienność w bardzo różnych przejawach – kulturowym, religijnym, związanym z tożsamością płciową i seksualnością, wiekiem, chorobą czy niepełnosprawnością. Sytuacje takie nie są dla jednostki łatwe. Na to, co jest obce, inne, często reagujemy lękiem, niepewnością, a czasem jawną wrogością. Celem rozważań podjętych w niniejszym artykule jest ukazanie roli edukacji w przygotowaniu człowieka do życia wśród innych; stworzenie podstaw, by potrafił w refleksyjny, krytyczny i odpowiedzialny sposób odnosić się do Innego. W artykule autorka odwołuje się do idei kształcenia ogólnego, ukierunkowanego na rozwijanie takich cech i predyspozycji, jak: krytyczne myślenie, namysł nad sobą, empatia, wyobraźnia, odpowiedzialność obywatelska. Wskazuje na starożytne tradycje, z których wyrasta ta idea. Uzasadnia dlaczego kształcenie ogólne pełni zasadniczą rolę w przygotowaniu człowieka do spotkania Innego i dlaczego powinno być zobowiązaniem, które podejmą wszyscy – a nie tylko wybrani – nauczyciele i edukatorzy.
Communing with otherness is a part of the contemporary human condition. Every day he encounters otherness in very different manifestations - cultural, religious, related to gender identity and sexuality, age, illness or disability. Such situations are not easy for the individual. We often react to what is foreign, different, with fear, uncertainty, and sometimes outright hostility. The aim of the considerations undertaken in this article is to show the role of education in preparing a person to live among others; laying the foundations for the ability to relate to the Other in a reflective, critical and responsible way. In this article I refer to the idea of general education aimed at developing such qualities and predispositions as critical thinking, self-reflection, empathy, imagination, and civic responsibility. I point to the ancient traditions from which this idea grows. I justify why general education has an essential role in preparing people to meet the Other and why it should be a commitment that all - not just a select few - teachers and educators will make.

Le romancier francophone grec, V. Alexakis se présente dans son œuvre sous une double identité : du grec et du français, du narrateur et de l’écrivain, de l’observateur et du héros. Nous essaierons donc de mettre en évidence son jeu de similitude ou de similarité par le processus de ce « cache-cache » entre l’écriture et la mémoire. Nous discernerons qu’il arrive à unir le niveau personnel (le fait de se rapporter sans cesse à au personnel) à la mémoire collective (il parvient à présenter social tout élément personnel), traits qui s’opposent à la vanité « traditionnelle » du texte autobiographique, lui apportant de la sorte une certaine nouvelle fraîcheur originale.

Spotkania z odmiennością: Varkensroze ansichten z etycznej perspektywy Poezja niderlandzkiego imigranta Mustafy Stitou została uznana przez Joostena i Vaessensa (2005) za „istotną społecznie” i „krytyczną”. Niniejszy artykuł bada inny aspekt literatury zaangażowanej, a mianowicie literaturę etyczną, przy czym zwraca uwagę na sposób, w jaki wiersze przedstawiają spotkania dwóch kultur lub dwóch osób. Teoria ‘orientalizmu’ Saida (1978) identyfikuje sposób, w jaki dyskurs, który może reprezentować całe kultury, tworzy założenia i uprzedzenia znajdujące odzwierciedlenie w indywidualnych interakcjach. W tych interakcjach podmioty wierszy Stitou są opisane w określonych terminach. Podmioty reagują na nie zarówno na poziomie interakcji, jak i na poziomie reprezentacji. Ontmoetingen met andersheid: Varkensroze ansichten vanuit een ethisch perspectief De dichtkunst van de Nederlandse migrantenauteur Mustafa Stitou is door Joosten en Vaessens (2005) geïdentificeerd als ‘sociaal relevant’ en ‘kritisch’. Deze bijdrage onderzoekt een ander facet van geëngageerde literatuur, namelijk de ethische. Hierbij wordt aandacht geschonken aan de manier waarop gedichten ontmoetingen tussen twee culturen of twee individuen voorstellen. Saids theorie van het ‘oriëntalisme’ (1978) identificeert de manier waarop een discours dat hele culturen kan representeren, vooronderstellingen en vooroordelen creëert die worden weergegeven in individuele interacties. In deze interacties worden de subjecten van Stitou’s gedichten in bepaalde termen omschreven. Zij reageren hierop zowel op het niveau van interactie als op het niveau van representatie.
The poetry of a Dutch migrant author Mustafa Stitou has been identified as socially relevant and critical by Joosten and Vaessens. This article explores another facet of engaged literature, the ethical one. Attention is paid to the way that poems represent meetings between two cultures or two individuals. Said’s theory of Orientalism identifies the ways in which a discourse with the power to represent whole cultures creates preconceptions and prejudices reflected in individual interactions. In these interactions subjects in Stitou’s poems are approached with certain terms of reference and react to this both on the level of interaction and on the level of representation.

Artykuł, wychodząc od interpretacji wiersza CCCLXXI z Piosenki o zależnościach i uzależnieniach, przedstawia nowomedialną, wariacyjną strukturę poezji Tkaczyszyna-Dyckiego, w której każde słowo zamienić można z dowolnym innym słowem w obrębie językowego algorytmu. Równoznakowość (kod znakowy właściwy każdej formie) w ramach poezji Dyckiego konstytuuje hiperrzeczywistą przestrzeń toż-samego (odpowiadającego nowomedialnej reprezentacji numerycznej) jako zawsze Innego (jednorazowego, w konkretnym interfejsie i w konkretnych hipertekstowych przebiegach). Tak zarysowana wirtualna przestrzeń działa jako autoteliczna powierzchnia bez mocnych graNIC i różNIC, a zatem bez ontologicznych wykluczeń – utopia.
The article, beginning with an interpretation of the poem “CCCLXXI” from Piosenki o zależnościach i uzależnieniach (Songs about Dependences and Addictions), presents the new media, variational structure of Tkaczyszyn-Dycki’s poetry, in which each word can be replaced with any other word within its linguistic algorithm. Sign equivalence (the sign code proper to each form) constitutes, in the framework of Dycki’s poetry, a hyperreal space of identity (corresponding to a new media numerical representation) that is always Other (single-use, in a concrete interface and concrete hypertextual operations). The virtual space thus outlined operates as an autotelic surface with weak, even non-existent, (non)boundaries and differences (amounting to non-entities), and thus without ontological exclusions – a utopia.

Autorka zwraca uwagę na dwie podstawowe reguły komunikologiczne, organizujące relacje między nadawcą a odbiorcą – wzajemności i zwrotności. Zauważa, że zgodnie z nimi odpowiedzialność za poprawne relacje między grupą dominującą a grupami mniejszościowymi spoczywa na wszystkich uczestnikach komunikacji. Do zadań mniejszości należy fortunna autokreacja, która powinna zachęcać do poznawania, pogłębiania wiedzy, neutralizowania negatywnych stereotypów, powinna także wyposażać odbiorcę w narzędzia promujące daną grupę w obu światach – realnym i wirtualnym. Rozważania mają charakter teoretyczny, choć poparte są spostrzeżeniami, dotyczącymi praktycznej realizacji przedstawionych założeń. Autorka weryfikuje teorię, głoszącą, że dobrze realizowane założenia imagologii mogą pomóc w zbudowaniu fortunnego wizerunku polskich mniejszości.
The author focuses on basic rules of communication, which organize the relationship between the sender and the recipient. She notices that, according to these rules, the responsibility for a correct relationship between the majority group and minority groups, rests on both of them. One of the tasks for the minority groups is effective self-creation which should encourage to learn, improve knowledge and neutralize negative stereotypes. It should also equip the recipient with tools that promote a particular group in both worlds – the real and the virtual. The considerations made by the author are theoretical in nature, but are supported by observations concerning the practical implementation of the presuppositions. The author verifes the theory saying that well-implemented assumptions of imagology can help build the positive image of the minority groups in Poland.

Jedną z ważnych kategorii pedagogicznych jest kategoria Innego. Może ona być rozpatrywana jako doświadczanie Inności oraz jako relacja z Innym. W artykule podejmuję refleksję nad doświadczeniem inności przez rodziców dzieci z niepełnosprawnością. Zastanawiam się nad źródłem tego doświadczenia. Przedstawiam także teoretyczne wzorce adaptacji inności przez rodziców – procesu przyjęcia niepełnosprawności.
One of the key pedagogical categories is the category of the Other. It can be considered both as experiencing otherness and as a relationship with the Other. The author undertakes some reflections upon experiencing otherness by parents of children with disability and upon the sources of this experience. The theoretical models are also presented of the parental adjustment to otherness – the process of accepting the disability.

Opis:

The article discusses the transformation of the Other’s concept in Post-Soviet popular culture, as well as the transformation of perception of “Self” and “Other” due to the emergence of real (state) and cultural borders and demarcations, which appear during the reader-text interaction. The paper explores such novels as M. Galina’s “Autochthony” and “The Little Glusha”, and V. Arenev’s “Gunpowder of the Dragon Bones”, to identify the types of the reader’s comprehension. The readers, in their turn, are divided into groups, which identify “Self” and “Other” in accordance with the division, represented in the novels. The author of the paper explores the version of the time gap (the comprehension of M. Galina’s “The Little Glusha”), as well as the different comprehension of the above-mentioned concepts by Russian and Ukrainian readers, regarding the social and cultural distances between these countries. The presented study explains the awareness of the Other’s concept, as well as recognition of Self, which is represented from the outside of the actual cultural tradition.

Opis:

Artykuł przedstawia etyczny wymiar refleksji filozoficznej Gabriela Marcela. Na tle szeregu obecnych w niej kategorii (m.in. próba, zdrada, wspólnota, ofiara, obecność, rozporządzalność, intersubiektywność, miłość) zostaje ona określona mianem heterocentrycznej. Pojęcie to, zaczerpnięte z pism samego Marcela, znajduje tu zastosowanie w celu odróżnienia od ugruntowanych już w literaturze przedmiotu, ale dotyczących zwłaszcza koncepcji późniejszych, nazw w rodzaju „filozofia innego” czy „dialektyka tożsamości i różnicy”; w ogólności dotyczy postawy zwrócenia się ku temu, co inne, które zarazem prowadzi do wewnętrznego samoodzyskania. Przed znajdującym się w drodze człowiekiem stoi zadanie odpowiedzi na wezwanie płynące zarówno z jego wnętrza, jak i z czegoś poza; ostatecznie jego celem staje się, by umocować własne istnienie w głębi rzeczywistości, która je przekracza. Wskazane przy tym zostaje, że etyka Marcela nie unika ontologii, a odpowiedź na pytanie o to, jak żyć, jest nierozerwalnie złączona z refleksją nad byciem.
The article presents ethical dimension of Gabriel Marcel’s philosophical thought. Concerning several categories that it contains (including trial, betrayal, community, sacrifice, presence, availability, intersubjectivity, love) it is described as heterocentric. This term, taken from the very writings of Marcel, is here applicated in order to distinguish it from the terms already well-established in the literature (yet related mainly to later ideas), such as “philosophy of the other” or “identity-difference dialectics”; in general, it points to an attitude towards the other, which, however, leads to internal self-recovery. There is a task in front of a man on the road: to answer a call coming from both the inside and the outside; ultimately the aim is to anchor one’s own existence in the depth of reality which exceeds it. It is also shown that Marcel's ethics does not evade ontology, and that the answer to the question of how to live is inextricably linked with the reflection over being.

This article concerns the question of stigma and the exclusion of individuals by a small community. Three films exemplify this process: Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs (1971); Giuseppe Tornatore’s Malena (2000); and Lars von Trier’s Dogville (2003). Each of these is a study in atypical stigmatization and exclusion—the situations are atypical because the victims of social aggression are not stigmatized in the classic sense by having an unambiguously negative attribute (for instance, poverty, an addiction, a physical deformity, etc.) but are persons who differ from the group in a positive way.

Ze względu na zmieniające się warunki funkcjonowania indywidualnego przyszłych nauczycieli coraz większego znaczenia nabiera kwestia przygotowania ich do życia w środowisku zróżnicowanym kulturowo. Współczesna młodzież akademicka jest w szczególnej sytuacji, nie tylko ze względu na to, że uczestniczy w tak szybko zmieniającym się świecie społeczno-kulturowym, ale również doświadcza zjawisk, które nigdy w takiej skali nie były obecne, a jej tożsamości i biografie są kształtowane przez tendencje makrospołeczne i makroekonomiczne. Namysł nad młodym, uczącym się pokoleniem Polaków i Czechów wiąże się z próbą znalezienia odpowiedzi na wiele pytań, wśród których ważne miejsce zajmują te dotyczące spostrzegania przez nich środowiska, w którym funkcjonują na co dzień – pogranicza. Poznawanie odmiennych kultur, w przestrzeni pogranicza, odbywa się w sposób naturalny, spontaniczny – przyczynia się do tego w dużym stopniu handel przygraniczny, czy działania transgraniczne. W konsekwencji tych procesów powstaje szereg społecznych nastawień wobec nieznanych i nieoswojonych wartości, których nosicielami są Inni (Stąd uznałam, że istotnym będzie poznanie, w jaki sposób młodzi dorośli spostrzegają sytuację na pograniczu będącą efektem funkcjonowania obok siebie grup różnych narodowości. Na potrzeby artykułu przygotowane zostały opisy i wyjaśnienia odnoszące się do problemu jak badani spostrzegają sytuację na pograniczu będącą efektem funkcjonowania obok siebie osób różnych narodowości?
Due to the changing conditions of individual functioning of future teachers, the issue of preparing them for life in the culturally diversified environment is becoming increasingly important. The contemporary academic youth is in a particular situation, not only in regard to their participation in the quickly changing sociocultural world, but also in regard to their experiencing the phenomena which earlier have never been present on such a scale. What seems significant as well is that their identities and biographies are shaped by both macro-social and macro-economic tendencies. The reflection upon the young learning generation of Poles and Czechs is associated with an attempt to find answers to many questions. Among them, a lot of attention should be paid to those concerning their perception of the environment in which they function every day – the borderland. Learning different cultures in the borderland space takes place naturally and spontaneously, which is to a large extent enhanced by borderland trading and transfrontier activities. What results from these processes are many social attitudes to the unknown and undomesticated values carried by the Others. Therefore, my intention is to learn how young adults view the situation in the borderland, which is an effect of the functioning side by side of different nationality groups. Due to the requirements of this study, some descriptions and explanations have been prepared which refer to the issue of the respondents’ perception of the situation in the borderland resulting from the functioning of different nationality groups.

Opis:

Dehumanization is – in the broadest sense – the process of depriving a person of positive human qualities. This problem, considered mainly in the field of social psychology, has strong pedagogical significance. The article is aimed to show the potential importance of popular art for intercultural education, precisely: to show the role that popular art can play in raising the awareness of the problem posed by dehumanization of the Other. To achieve the intended goal, the author indicates the justified presence of popular art in education, introduces the concept of the Other, i.e. a person who is beyond the horizon of a given person’s experience, who is outside a given community or is cognitively dangerous, and outlines the issue of dehumanization. The exemplification was conducted on the example of the episode of the British science fiction series Black Mirror – Men Against Fire (2016). The considerations are carried out from the perspective of contemporary aesthetic education, which refers conceptually to the Polish theory of aesthetic education. Humanistically oriented, contemporary aesthetic education must be conducted in the vein of pluralism and interculturalism; it should also contribute to the development of a person’s holistic personality: from their aesthetic sensitivity and moral orientation, to their ability of critical thinking and creativity. In the article, the possibilities are indicated of using popular art in education by building theoretical interpretive contexts.
Dehumanizacja to – w najbardziej ogólnym sensie – proces zanegowania człowieczeństwa drugiej osoby. Problem ten, rozpatrywany przede wszystkim na gruncie psychologii społecznej, posiada silne konotacje pedagogiczne. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie potencjalnego znaczenia sztuki popularnej dla edukacji międzykulturowej, a dokładnie ukazanie roli, jaką sztuka ta może pełnić w uświadamianiu problemu dehumanizacji Obcego. Aby osiągnąć zamierzony cel, w tekście wskazano na zasadność obecności sztuki popularnej w edukacji, przedstawiono pojęcie Obcego, czyli osoby znajdującej się poza horyzontem doświadczenia danego człowieka, poza daną społecznością, poznawczo niebezpiecznego, oraz zarysowano zagadnienie dehumanizacji. Egzemplifikację przeprowadzono na przykładzie piątego odcinka trzeciej serii brytyjskiego serialu science fiction Black Mirror – Men Against Fire (2016). Rozważania prowadzone są z perspektywy nowocześnie rozumianej edukacji estetycznej, nawiązującej koncepcyjnie do polskiej teorii wychowania estetycznego. Zorientowana humanistycznie, nowoczesna edukacja estetyczna musi być realizowana w duchu pluralizmu i międzykulturowości; powinna także przyczyniać się do rozwijania całokształtu osobowości człowieka: od jego wrażliwości estetycznej i orientacji moralnej, po zdolność krytycznego myślenia i kreatywność. Artykuł wskazuje na możliwości wykorzystania sztuki popularnej w edukacji poprzez budowanie teoretycznych kontekstów interpretacyjnych.

The aim of the article is to analyse Michel Bernanos’ fantastic series The Other Side of the Mountain from an ecocritical perspective (among others, the literary text as L. Buell’s “green script”). The series first published in the sixties, constitutes an integral part of the well-known Angoisse collection edited by the publishing house Fleuve Noir, and its author is one of the most prominent figures of the "Fleuve Noir school of the fantastic". The innovative character of The Other Side of the Mountain consists of merging emblematic fantastic elements with protoecological ideas, which were, however, popularised by deep ecology only in the nineties.
Celem artykułu jest analiza cyklu fantastycznego La Montagne morte de la vie Michel’a Bernanosa w ujęciu ekokrytycznym (m.in. tekst literacki jako „green script” L. Buell’a). Opublikowany po raz pierwszy w latach sześćdziesiątych XX wieku cykl stanowi integralną część słynnej kolekcji Angoisse wydawnictwa Fleuve Noir, a jego autor jest jedną z wiodących postaci „szkoły fantastyki Fleuve Noir”. Nowatorstwo La Montagne morte de la vie polega przede wszystkim na fuzji elementów emblematycznych dla fantastyki z ideami protoekologicznymi, które zostaną spopularyzowane przez ekologię głęboką dopiero w latach dziewięćdziesiątych XX wieku.

Od swojego nasilenia w roku 2015 – kryzys migracyjny stał się jednym z ważniejszych tematów doniesień medialnych. Z biegiem czasu owe częste doniesienia przyczyniły się do społecznego zobojętnienia na krzywdę migrantów. Przybysze – traktowani stereotypowo jako obcy – stali się grupą ludzi zbędnych, niepotrzebnych, co z kolei zaczęło prowadzić do społecznych napięć i podziałów. Autorka prezentowanego artykułu zamierza wykazać, że jednym ze sposobów budowania dialogu między kulturami może być reportaż, szczególnie reportaż radiowy. Podążając za myślą Ryszarda Kapuścińskiego i Emmanuela Levinasa autorka uważa, że spotkanie z „Innym” to jedno z najważniejszych wyzwań XXI wieku. Trzy analizowane reportaże zdają się potwierdzać, że radiowe medium może pełnić szczególną rolę w przezwyciężaniu „zglobalizowanej obojętności”.
Since it intensified in 2015, the migration crisis has become one of the major topics of media coverage. With time those numerous pieces resulted in society becoming indifferent to the plight of migrants. The newcomers, stereotypically treated as aliens, became a group of the unnecessary and unneeded, which then started to bear social tension and divisions. The author of the article intends to indicate that reportage/feature, radio reportage in particular, is one of the methods for building dialogue between cultures. In following the remarks of Ryszard Kapuściński and Emmanuel Levinas, the author noted that an encounter with “the Other” is one of the major challenges of the 21st century. The three analysed programmes seem to prove the fact that the medium of radio may fulfil a special role in overcoming “globalised indifference.”

Autor wprowadza w uniwersalne źródła i funkcje nietolerancji w dziejach człowieka. Drugi nurt rozważań dotyczy historii polskich korzeni i źródeł nietolerancji w różnych okresach historii polskiego państwa i społeczeństwa. Odrębna część rozprawy dotyczy współczesnych postaci nietolerancji i ryzykownej tezy, że zaraza nietolerancji jest trwałą właściwością świadomości polskiego społeczeństwa. Rozważania sprowadzają się do konkluzji, że jedyną drogą uwolnienia człowieka od ksenofobii, nienawiści, uogólnionej nietolerancji jest wychowanie i edukacja.
The author investigates omnipresent and universal sources/origins of intolerance and its workings and mechanisms in the history of mankind. Afterwards, he presents roots and sources of intolerance during the course of Polish history. A further chapter deals with the most recent and present expressions of intolerance and the rather daring thesis that the disease of intolerance is an inherent trait of Polish awareness. The author’s reflections culminate in the insight that the only way to liberate man from xenophobia, hate and averall intolerance lies in proper education.

W artykule przedstawiono analizę esejów Nicoli Chiaromonte w perspektywie teorii skopos. Tłumaczenie tekstu powinno uwzględniać kontekst kulturowy, aksjologiczny, potrzeby odbiorcy. Włoski myśliciel poprzez swoje eseje prowadzi dialog z odbiorcą. W Polsce taką rozmowę rozpoczął Wojciech Karpiński. Inkulturacja zapisków włoskiego aktywisty oddaje jego sposób pojmowania świata, siebie, drugiego człowieka. Pozwalają one na nowo odkryć bogactwo starożytnej, filozoficznej, artystycznej spuścizny, odnaleźć rzeczywistość otaczającą język, którą wyrazi na nowo wartość człowieka.
The article discusses the essays by Nicola Chiaromonte analyzed from the perspective of the skopos theory. According to this theory, translator of any text should take into consideration the cultural context of work he renders in another language, its axiological aspect as well as requirements of its recipients. The dialogue Chiaromonte had with his Italian readers has been transferred into Polish literary discourse by Wojciech Karpiński. The translations he produced provide their Polish recipients with such a vision of the Italian author, his way of understanding the world, oneself and other people, that the essays in Polish clearly reveal a new usage and intellectual potential of ancient philosophical and artistic legacy.

The study looks at how the fear of the Other, rampant in contemporary societies, is countered linguistically in selected English-language discourses, including both sides of the Atlantic, Australia, and New Zealand. The overarching conceptual category of THE OTHER is internally heterogeneous and involves linguistic portrayals through such terms as other, different, foreigner, stranger, or alien. The kinds of discourses that will be analysed, i.e. those aimed to reduce the level of the fear of or the hostility towards Others, contextualize these terms in ways markedly different from those in the fear-augmenting discourses. Typical devices used for the purpose are collocations and lexical patterns within the text.The data come from British, American, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand press and public discourse, with some insight also obtained from Ryszard Kapuściński’s book The Other. However, because the book is a series of lectures translated from Polish into English, a brief excursus into the analogous portrayal in the Polish original is also performed. On the theoretical side, the analysis will hopefully provide a hint as to whether and in what ways the heterogeneity of THE OTHER as a concept can be captured in terms of differential cultural models.
W artykule rozważa się, w jaki sposób pojęcie Innego, rozumianego tu jako imigranta różniącego się od mieszkańców kraju, do którego przybywa pod względem etnicznym, religijnym, językowym i rasowym, przedstawiane jest w wybranym segmencie anglojęzycznego dyskursu medialnego. Dane pochodzą z mediów brytyjskich, amerykańskich, kanadyjskich, australijskich i nowozelandzkich (głównie z prasy), lecz ponieważ są ograniczone do sześciu wybranych artykułów, proponowana analiza ma charakter jakościowy, nie ilościowy czy statystyczny. Jest to zatem propozycja metody rekonstrukcji modelu kulturowego (cultural model) danego pojęcia, nie zaś prezentacja skończonego modelu (w tym wypadku Innego). Przy zastosowaniu tej metody, ilościowe i jakościowe poszerzenie korpusu poddawanego analizie może pomóc w stworzeniu opisów różnych modeli kulturowych heterogenicznego pojęcia Innego. Pod względem teoretycznym pojęcie modelu kulturowego wiąże się także w niniejszej pracy z pojęciem kulturowej ramy mentalnej (cultural mindset).

Continuous change is an integral part of the postmodern life and it leaves its traces both in culture and the public communication. It therefore seems crucial to open oneself to a new, more profound way of understanding culture, while also taking into consideration the confrontation which takes place when an individual or a community face all that is unknown, untamed and transgressive. This search for the source of a more profound reflection on the identity of a grown human being in postmodern culture also means openness to andragogic thinking. In this context, it seems important to see Television Theatre as a space for the meaningful voice. Theatre offers the chance to see oneself from a distance, find one’s roots, reveal secret desires or contradictory impulses. The aim of this self-reflection, sparked by a theatre play, is to produce formative anxiousness.
Ponowoczesne życie niesie konieczność funkcjonowania w sytuacji nieustannej zmiany, która pozostawia ślady w przestrzeni kultury, również w sferze społecznego komunikowania. Niezbędne wydaje się zatem wzbudzenie w sobie otwartości na odczytywanie kultury w nowy, głębszy sposób, z uwzględnieniem konfrontacji jednostki i wspólnoty z tym, co jest obce, nieoswojone, transgresyjne. To poszukiwanie źródeł głębszej refleksji na temat tożsamości człowieka dorosłego w ponowoczesnej kulturze oznacza także otwarcie myślenia andragogicznego. Warto w tym kontekście uruchomić edukacyjny wymiar Teatru Telewizji jako miejsca zabierania głosu znaczącego. W teatrze człowiek ma szansę przyjrzeć się sobie z dystansu, by na nowo odnaleźć własne korzenie, ujawnić ukryte pragnienia czy sprzeczne impulsy. Celem generowanej przez spektakl teatralny autorefleksji jest budzenie rozwojowego niepokoju.

In the paper the author would like to draw readers’ attention to the discussion about the other’s face. The point of reference is the philosophy of E. Lévinas. The French philosopher considered himself a phenomenologist, but if so, someone may ask: what kind of phenomenology is it? and how should be the phenomenon understood? These questions led to a vivid discussion. On the one hand, there is D. Janicaud who severely criticized Lévinas for having made “a theological turn” and thus for having abandoned phenomenology for theology. On the other hand, J.-L. Marion tried to reformulate the Lévinas central idea of the other’s face in a language of the new phenomenology. In the paper the author first presents the position of Lévinas about phenomenology, then goes into critical arguments and discuss them, finally he tries to reformulate in the new way the phenomenon of the other’s face, it means in terms of J.-L. Marion’s new phenomenology.
W artykule podejmuję dyskusję dotyczącą twarzy innego. Punktem odniesienia będą poglądy E. Lévinasa, który uważał się za fenomenologa. Powstaje pytanie: jakiego rodzaju jest to fenomenologia? Jak rozumieć fenomen? Pytania te wywołały żywą dyskusję. Z jednej strony spotkały się one z krytyką. D. Janicaud zarzuca Lévinasowi „teologiczny zwrot” i porzucenie fenomenologii na rzecz teologii. Z drugiej J. L. Marion stara się przeformułować analizy Lévinasa w duchu nowej fenomenologii. W mojej argumentacji przedstawię najpierw poglądy Lévinasa dotyczące fenomenologii, następnie uwagi krytyczne pod jego adresem, by w końcowej części artykułu ująć fenomen twarzy w języku nowej fenomenologii.

The article describes previously unknown intertextual relationships and kinships between Marina Tsvetaeva and Rafał Wojaczek. The author reveals analogies in both the biographical and the textual spheres. The first one contains the existential and ideological problems as well as myth-forming aspects focusing on the fact of suicidal death (of both authors), the second one the thematization, organizing poetic statements and identical formal resolutions. The figures of “the Negro” and “the Jew” come to the fore as well as the issues centered around the anti-aesthetic categories: guilt and punishment, life and death, sacrum and profanum.
В статье описаны ранние неизвестные интертекстуальные отношения и родство между Мариной Цветаевой и Рафалом Воячеком. Автор указывает на аналогии как в биографической, так и в текстовой сферах. Первая из них охватывает экзистенциальные и мировоззренческие проблемы, а также мифотворческие аспекты с упором на факт самоубийственной смерти (обоих авторов). Вторая — тематизацию, организацию поэтического высказывания и формальные приемы. На первом плане стоят фигуры „негра” и „еврея”, а также вопросы касающиеся противоположных категорий: вина и наказание, жизнь и смерть, sacrum и profanum.

Artykuł ma na celu przypomnienie wczesnej i praktycznie nieznanej w Polsce sztuki Tennessee Williamsa Not About Nightingales (1938). Autorka osadza ją w kontekście biografii pisarza i jego wrażliwości na problemy społecznie wykluczonych. Tematem sztuki jest nacechowany okrucieństwem stosunek większości do mniejszości (społecznych czy też seksualnych), niemieszczących się w stereotypowych ramach. Autorka szuka źródeł Not About Nightingales w biografii Williamsa: w wychowaniu na „Głębokim Południu”, w najbardziej konserwatywnym regionie Stanów Zjednoczonych, oraz w trudnej relacji pisarza z ojcem, traktującym go jak odmieńca. W opartym na faktach dramacie przedmiotem refleksji jest trudna sytuacja więźniów, którzy wyróżniają się swoją odmiennością, co wzmaga stosowaną wobec nich przemoc. Młodzieńcza sztuka Williamsa pozwala zrewidować poglądy na temat jego twórczości i zwrócić na nią uwagę teatru społecznie zaangażowanego. Williams, znany głównie jako autor kameralnych dramatów psychologicznych, często udomowionych i zawłaszczonych przez popkulturę, był także pisarzem o dużej wrażliwości społecznej, wyczulonym na okrucieństwo w kontaktach międzyludzkich, ujawniające się szczególnie w stosunku do tych, którzy są inni.
This article aims to recall Tennessee Williams’s early play Not About Nightingales (1938), which is virtually unknown in Poland. The text is discussed in the context of the writer’s biography and his sensitivity to the problems of the socially excluded. The play thematizes the majority’s cruel attitude towards minorities that do not fit into stereotypical frames (social or sexual). The author of the article locates the sources of Not About Nightingales in Williams’s biography: in his growing up in the Deep South, the most conservative region of the United States, and in his troubled relationship with his father, who regarded him as a misfit. Based on facts, the play reflects on the plight of prisoners who stand out as different, which exacerbates the violence against them. This early text helps sheds a different light on Williams’s work, potentially bringing it to the attention of socially engaged theater. Best known as an author of intimate psychological dramas, which have been often domesticated and appropriated by pop culture, Williams was also a writer of great social conscience, sensitive to cruelty in interpersonal relations, which manifests itself particularly against those who are different.

Opis:

Considering the imagological conceptions of the Other by Daniel-Henri Pageau and Gordana Đerić, this text analyses the role of literature in the deconstruction of stereotypes that circulate in communication between Balkan neighbours. In the focus of our interpretation are three novels of contemporary Macedonian literature (Luan Starova’s Balkanvavilonci, Dragi Mihajlovski’s Mojot Skenderbej and Blazhe Minevski’s Nishan), which are paradigmatic in two ways: 1. they refer to historical events and figures, thus confirming that history is the basic mechanism for the argumentation of stereotypical images; 2. they depict processes of destereotyping both thematically and structurally, but also by their appearance in a particular sociohistorical context, with the aim of promoting supranational, universal, human, civilizational, and cultural values such as love, empathy, forgiveness, dialogue, tolerance, education, love of books, optimism, humaneness, all of which are usually treated as originally European values. Literature, by articulating the processes of destereotyping through the narrative strategies in the works, confirms that it holds the potential to act correctively on systems where different forms of power are based on discrimination and submission.  
Przedmiotem tekstu jest analiza roli literatury w dekonstrukcji stereotypów krążących w komunikacji między bałkańskimi sąsiadami z perspektywy imagologicznych koncepcji Innego autorstwa Daniela-Henri Pageau i Gordany Đerić. W centrum uwagi znajdują się trzy powieści zaliczane do współczesnej literatury macedońskiej (Balkanvavilonci Luany Starovy, Mojot Skenderbej Dragiego Mihajlovskiego, Nishan Blaže Minevskiego). Są one paradygmatyczne z dwóch względów: 1. odwołują się do wydarzeń i postaci historycznych, czym potwierdzają, że historia jest podstawowym mechanizmem argumentacji obrazów o charakterze stereotypowym; 2. ujawniają procesy destereotypizacji zarówno pod względem tematycznym, jak i strukturalnym, a też przez zaktualizowanie określonego kontekstu społeczno-historycznego, co służy promowaniu wartości ponadnarodowych, uniwersalnych, ludzkich, cywilizacyjnych i kulturowych, takich jak miłość, empatia, przebaczenie, dialog, tolerancja, edukacja, miłość do książek, optymizm, humanitaryzm, traktowanych jako wartości fundamentalnie europejskie. Potwierdza to, że artykułując procesy desterotypizacji przez strategie narracyjne, literatura ma potencjał do działania korygującego w systemach, w których różne formy władzy oparte są na dyskryminacji i uległości.

Opis:

This paper shows how persecution is a condition that binds each in an ethical obligation. Persecution is functionally defined here as an impinging, affective relation, one that is neither mediated by reason nor open to apology. The works of Sigmund Freud help illuminate the psychological mechanism responsible for impeding rational transparency in delusions of persecution and super-egoical moral demands. Similar to Freud who employs what Paul Ricœur has called a “hermeneutics of suspicion” to interrogate the status of a fully knowing subject, I contend that Emmanuel Lévinas’s work on the ethical subject is useful for developing a “hermeneutics of trust” in an ambivalent ontological condition that is unavoidably ethical. By thinking Freud and Lévinas together, I show how the commitment to total mastery of an unknowable ego leads to a persecutory relation, yielding moralities that are unconcerned with injuring the other in the name of that which is judged as good. In answer to this ethical dilemma, I propose that a turn toward relational ethics and an intentionality of search offers traces of a morality where differences are preserved and thus prevent the persecution of the other for one’s own moral fulfillment.

Opis:

Analyzing the relationships between art and fashion, I will refer to the category the Other/ identical. For several decades, it has been popular in the humanistic debate, subject to various interpretations (Derrida, Foucault, feminism, post-colonialism). In the meaning adopted here, just as the Other is a condition for the existence of the identical, so, I believe, fashion is a point of reference for art. It functions as an element allowing art to build its identity on being different from it. This situation was particularly evident in the first half of the 20th century. In the introductory part of my paper, I will present some examples of avant-garde artists' involvement in the design of clothing treated on an equal footing with artistic activity. For the Futurists and Constructivists, the Other and the identical were equal. The second part of the paper describes the situation that arose at the end of the 20th century, when equality between the Other and the identical took a different form. The identical started imitating the Other – art now resembles a fashion show, advertising photography or a luxury boutique. This reveals the anti-nomical character of art, its secret connection with fashion, anticipated by Theodor W. Adorno. Contemporary art no longer has the strength to resist it. They blend into the aesthetic visual sphere.
Analizując związki miedzy sztuką a modą odwołuję się do kategorii Inny/tożsamy. Od kilku dziesięcioleci jest ona popularna w debacie humanistycznej podlegając różnym interpretacjom (Derrida, Foucault, feminizm, postkolonializm). W przyjętym tu sensie, podobnie jak Inny stanowi warunek istnienia tożsamego, tak, moim zdaniem, moda jest punktem odniesienia dla sztuki. Funkcjonuje jako element pozwalający sztuce budować tożsamość na zasadzie odróżnienia się od niej. Sytuacja ta ze szczególną wyrazistością ujawniła się w pierwszej połowie XX wieku. W początkowej części tekstu przedstawiam przykłady zaangażowania artystów awangardowych w problematykę projektowania ubioru traktowanego na równi z działalnością artystyczną. Dla futurystów i konstruktywistów Inny i tożsamy były sobie równe. Druga część tekstu pokazuje sytuację rodzącą się pod koniec minionego stulecia, gdy równość między Innym i tożsamym przyjęła odmienną formę. Tożsamy zaczął imitować Innego – sztuka przypomina obecnie prezentację mody, fotografię reklamową lub luksusowy butik. Wyszła na jaw przeczuwana przez Theodora W. Adorna antynomiczność sztuki, jej sekretny związek z modą. Współczesna sztuka nie ma już sił opierać się jej. Roztapia się wraz z nią w estetycznej sferze wizualnej.

This paper deals with three different perspectives appeared in foreign visitors’ records on Korea in 1900s. Jack London was a writer who wrote novels highly critical of American society based on progressivism. However, when his progressive perspective was adopted to report the political situation of Korea in 1904, he revealed a typical perspective of orientalism. He regarded Korea and ways of living in Korea as disgusting and ‘uncivilized.’Compared with Jack London’s perspective, French poet Georges Ducrocq’s book was rather favorable. He visited Korea in 1901 and he showed affectionate attitude toward Korea and its people. However, his travel report, Pauvre et Douce Coree, can be defined as representing aesthetic orientalism. He tried to make all the ‘Korean things’ seem beautiful and nice, but it is true that this kind of view can also conceal something concrete and specific. This perspective at once beautifies Korea and also conceals the reality about Korea.E. Burton Holmes was a traveler and he often used his ‘motion-picture’ machine to record things he witnessed while travelling around worldwide countries. So, his report (travelogue) and motion picture film on Korea written and made in 1901 was based on close observation and rather objective point of view. Nonetheless, he couldn’t avoid the perspective of the colonizer’s model of the world, in other words, geographical diffusionism of western culture.
Ten artykuł dotyczy trzech różnych perspektyw jakie pojawiły się w dokumentach zagranicznych gości na temat Korei w początkach XX wieku. Jack London był pisarzem, który pisał powieści bardzo krytyczne w stosunku do społeczeństwa amerykańskiego. Gdy jednak w 1904 roku przyjęto jego postępową perspektywę, opisując sytuację polityczną w Korei, ujawnił on typowy pogląd orientalizmu. Uważał, że Korea i sposób życia Koreańczyków są obrzydliwe i „niecywilizowane”. W porównaniu z punktem widzenia Jacka Londona, książka francuskiego poety Georgesa Ducrocqa przedstawiała Koreę raczej w korzystnym świetle. Odwiedził Koreę w 1901 roku i okazywał uczuciową postawę wobec Korei i jej mieszkańców. Jednak jego sprawozdanie z podróży, Pauvre et Douce Coree, można określić jako reprezentatywny orientalizm estetyczny. Starał się, by wszystkie „koreańskie sprawy” wydały się piękne i miłe, ale prawdą jest, że taki pogląd może ukryć coś konkretnego. Ta perspektywa od samego początku upiększa Koreę, a także w tym samym czasie ukrywa rzeczywisty obraz Korei. E. Burton Holmes był podróżnikiem i często używał swojego „aparatu fotograficznego” do nagrywania rzeczy, których był świadkiem podczas podróży po całym świecie. Tak więc jego reportaż (travelogue) i film fabularny o Korei z 1901 roku opierały się na ścisłej obserwacji i raczej obiektywnym punkcie widzenia. Niemniej jednak nie mógł on uniknąć perspektywy modelu kolonizatora świata, innymi słowy, geograficznego dyfuzjonizmu.
본고는 20세기 초반 한국(대한제국)을 방문한 3명의 외국 작가의 글을 검토한다. 잭 런던의 직선적 진보의식에 기초한 오리엔탈리즘이 타자를 유럽(서구)중심의 기준에 맞춰 무한히 상대화하면서 스스로의 우월성을 강조한다면 조르주 뒤크로의 심미적 오리엔탈리즘은 타자의 구체적 상황과 갈등과 내적 변모 과정을 무화시키는 정서적 태도에 의존함으로써 타자를 항구적 불변의 지위에 두려한다. 그런가 하면 버튼 홈스는 사용하는 매체의 특징에 따라 객관적 관찰자의 시점을 유지하려는 노력을 기울인다. 그러나 그 역시 근대적 확산론의 전제를 수용하고 있다.잭 런던의 편협한 진보주의와 조르주 뒤크로의 복고적이고 심미화된 오리엔탈리즘, 그리고 버튼 홈스의 객관적 태도와 그것의 이면에 놓인 근대적 확산의 시계는 20세기 초 조선을 방문한 민간인 외국인들의 시선을 전형적 구도로 보여준다고 하겠다.

Artykuł rozważa przykłady polskiej prozy po roku 1989, ukazujące skutki długotrwałej kondycji subalterna, które dochodzą do głosu w (niesymetrycznych, bo aktywizujących podmioty nierównoprawne) relacjach z Obcym. Mówi o konstrukcyjnej formie fantazmatu ojczyzny (tego, co najbardziej „swoje”) i jego selektywnym charakterze. Formułuje tezę, że problemem polskiej spetryfikowanej narracji dominującej z Ojczyzną w centrum uwagi i tożsamością podmiotu budowaną z uwzględnieniem specyficznego stosunku do Obcych jest to, iż nie chce ona przyznać, że kulturowe autorytety dyktuje teraźniejszość, a nie przeszłość i że odbywa się między nimi ciągły ruch wymiany znaczeń – zapominania i zapamiętywania.
The article considers examples of the post-1989 Polish prose exposing the results of a long-term subaltern condition. These results get activated in relations with the Other. They are asymmetrical because they concern unequal subjects. The article posits that the phantasm of the motherland (that which is the most ‘self’) has a constructing form and selective character. It poses the thesis that the problem of the Polish petrified dominant narration with the motherland at the center of attention and subject identity marked with a specific relation to the Other is that it does not want to admit that cultural authority is created by the present time and not the past. There is a constant interchange in meaning – from forgetting to remembering and back – that takes place between them.

Opis:

This article aims at providing an answer to the question of whether, and if so to what extent (intensive) German language learning and exploring German culture leads to a positive change in the image of Germany and Germans in Poland. The article opens with theoretical considerations on the Us–Them dichotomy, the essential components of self-image and the image of the Other, as well as the interpenetration of the self and otherness. In turn, the empirical part of the article, which is directly related to the theoretical one, is devoted to the analysis of the results of a qualitative study conducted among Polish students of German Philology. The results of the analysis of the students’ utterances show that the exploration of German culture and the improvement of one’s German language proficiency at school and during German studies at university, as well as direct contact with the Germans have resulted in a positive change in the respondents’ attitudes towards Germany, Germans and the German language. The article ends with conclusions along with clearly outlined avenues for further research.

Opis:

In our cultural circle, the right to asylum derives its traditions from both legislation and religion, leads one’s attention to ancient times and the institutions of the Egyptians, Hebrews and Greeks. Moreover, it combines the issues of otherness, inclusion, persecution, suffering, fragility, duty, responsibility for the Other, as well as justice, hospitality, shelter and holiness. The importance of asylum, the growth of which in the 20th century was related to the European crimes of colonialism, the terror of totalitarianisms, the Holocaust, ethnic cleansing, the fate of refugees and stateless people, does not diminish in the face of the wars and disasters of the 21st century. In this context, the question of how one can link the issue of asylum to education seems legitimate. In relation to this question, the essay focuses attention on the concepts of Emmanuel Levinas, Jacques Derrida and Patrick Declerck, drawing on various traditions of asylum and thinking about hospitality that have contributed to shaping the foundations of European educational and aid institutions. Using the achievements of these important traditions for the Western humanities and the concepts of the above-mentioned philosophers, I would like to point out the need to think about educational spaces in the perspective of asylum pedagogy.
W naszym kręgu kulturowym prawo do azylu wywodzi swoje tradycje zarówno z prawodawstwa, jak i religii, prowadzi naszą uwagę ku czasom starożytnym i instytucjom Egipcjan, Hebrajczyków i Greków, łączy w sobie zagadnienia inności, różnicy i inkluzji, prześladowania, cierpienia i kruchości, obowiązku, odpowiedzialności za Innego i sprawiedliwość, miejsca bezpiecznego pobytu, gościnności, dialogu i spotkania, udzielania schronienia i świętości. Znaczenie azylu, którego wzrost w XX wieku związany był z europejskimi zbrodniami kolonializmu, terrorem totalitaryzmów, zagładą, czystkami etnicznymi, losami uchodźców i bezpaństwowców, nie maleje w obliczu wojen i katastrof XXI wieku. W tym kontekście pytanie, w jaki sposób zagadnienie azylu możemy łączyć z edukacją, wydaje się uzasadnione. W związku z tym pytaniem esej koncentruje uwagę na koncepcjach Emmanuela Lévinasa, Jacques’a Derridy oraz Patricka Declercka, nawiązujących do różnych tradycji azylowych oraz myślenia o gościnności, które miały swój udział w ukształtowaniu podstaw europejskich instytucji edukacyjnych i pomocowych. Korzystając z dorobku tych doniosłych dla zachodniej humanistyki tradycji oraz koncepcji wymienionych filozofów, chciałbym wskazać na potrzebę myślenia o przestrzeniach edukacyjnych w perspektywie pedagogiki azylu.

Relacja człowiek–zwierzę pozostaje naznaczona ambiwalencją, której źródłem jest antropocentryczny paradygmat kultury. Tekst opisuje wybrane elementy ambiwalentnego stosunku człowieka do zwierząt oraz obcość zwierząt w ludzkim świecie i przedstawia, na czym polega „kłopotliwy” charakter tej relacji. Ma on bardzo wiele wymiarów i łączy się z licznymi problemami szczegółowymi. W artykule skupiono się na wybranych zagadnieniach z tego obszaru. „Kłopotliwość” ujawnia się już w języku debaty nad zwierzętami, pozornie przekraczającym ontologiczną przepaść międzygatunkową, ale w rzeczywistości ją sankcjonującym. Inna trudność metateoretyczna wyłania się przy próbach sformułowania adekwatnego pytania badawczego w debacie nad etyką postępowania wobec zwierząt. Pytanie takie i odpowiedź na nie mogłyby pomóc stworzyć etykę uwzględniającą w uniwersum moralnym zarówno człowieka, jak i zwierzęta w całej ich różnorodności. Podstawowym problemem okazuje się zatem ustalenie jednolitych warunków traktowania całego królestwa animalia. W tekście przedstawiono krytyczną analizę dotychczasowej debaty na temat losu zwierząt w świecie człowieka i przysługujących im praw. Analiza ta otwiera możliwość szerszej dyskusji nad problemem kłopotliwej relacji człowieka do zwierząt. Artykuł pokazuje też, że mimo długoletnich starań zwolenników ruchu wyzwolenia zwierząt niewiele uczyniono jeszcze w celu rzeczywistej poprawy losu zwierząt i wciąż pozostają one bytami obcymi w świecie człowieka. Trudno jest stworzyć etykę, która w uniwersum moralnym uwzględniałaby zwierzęta (z całą ich różnorodnością) niezależnie od tego, w jakim stopniu wykazują one podobieństwo do człowieka. Przeprowadzone analizy ujawniają, że pod maską troski o zwierzęta często kryje się postawa antropocentryczna, co skłania do ponawiania pytań o naturę naszej relacji ze światem animalia w epoce antropocenu. Dyskurs na temat losu zwierząt jest na wskroś antropocentryczny, toczy się bowiem na gruncie przekonania, że zwierzęta zasługują na naszą troskę o tyle, o ile wykazują one cechy „ludzkie”. Postawa tego rodzaju ujawnia wewnętrzną słabość debaty nad etyką postępowania wobec zwierząt, a jednocześnie pokazuje, jak bardzo „kłopotliwa” również w praktyce okazuje się relacja człowiek–zwierzę.
The human-animal relationships are marked by ambiguity due to the anthropocentric paradigm prevailing in culture. The paper presents some chosen manifestations of this ambiguity, as well as animals as ‘others,’ or ‘strangers,’ in the human world, thus delving deeper into the meaning of the relation in question. As it turns out, the problem is multidimensional and in order to approach it one needs to scrutinize a number of specific issues. First of all, the ‘trouble’ lies in that the language applied in the debate on animal ethics, which is supposed to bridge the interspecies gap, apparently legitimizes it. Another metatheoretical difficulty emerges once we attempt to formulate an adequate research question that would enable creating an ethics that applies to human beings as well as to animals in all their variety. Thus the basic problem lies in establishing the universal criteria necessary to include all the members of the Kingdom Animalia in the moral universe. The paper comprises a critical analysis of the debate on the status of animals in the human world as well on the issue of animal rights. The analysis in question opens new possibilities for further discussion of the ‘troublesome’ relationship between humans and animals. The paper also shows that the long-time efforts of the animal liberation movement have done very little to improve the conditions in which animals live. Animals are still ‘strangers’ in the human world. The task of creating an ethics that would embrace both humans and animals, in all their variety, regardless of the extent of their likeness to humans, proves extremely difficult. The author shows that under the guise of concern for the well-being of animals anthropocentric attitudes are pursued, which once again prompts the question about the nature of the relationship between humans and animals in the age of Anthropocene. The weakness of the debate on animal welfare lies in its being thoroughly anthropocentric due to the fact that it is continued on the grounds of the belief that animals ‘deserve’ care from humans insofar as they manifest ‘human’ traits. Still the debate in question is itself a proof of how ‘troublesome’ the relationship between humans and animals turns out in practice.

Der Artikel bildet den Versuch einer Antwort auf die Frage, ob die spezifische, durch Sozialpsychologie erforschte und beschriebene Wahrnehmungsweise des „Fremden“ ihre philosophische Entsprechung in den Moralwissenschaften hat und ob der Übergang von einer psychologischen zu einer ethischen Reflexion möglich ist. Der Verfasser erwägt auch den besonderen Charakter der drei Beziehungsarten „wir – sie“, „Eigene – Fremde“, „Ich – Du“. Bei der Feststellung von Unterschieden und Ähnlichkeiten zwischen der philosophischen und der psychologischen Reflexion wurde die Gliederung der Dehumanisierung aufgrund der von ihr angenommenen Formen verwendet, die von der italienischen Forscherin Chiara Volpato vorgeschlagen wurde. Infolge detaillierter Analysen kommt der Verfasser zum Schluss, dass ein gewisses Hilfsmittel gegen den kategorialen und essentialisierenden Charakter der Dehumanisierung die Wende zur Beziehung „Ich – Du“ bildet, die von der Philosophie des Dialogs beschrieben wird. Diese Wende könnte zur Vorbeugung schädlicher sozialer Antagonismen beitragen und lässt in dem „Anderen“ nicht ein feindliches und bedrohliches Individuum, sondern einen gleichwertigen Teilnehmer einer dialogischen Relation wahrnehmen. 
The paper attempts to answer the question as to whether the specific way of perceiving “the Other”, as examined and described by social psychology, has its own philosophical equivalent in the science of morality and if it is therefore possible to pass from psychological to ethical reflection. The author also considers the specific character of three kinds of relationship: “I – thou”, “we – others”, and “own people – strangers”. In determining the differences and similarities between philosophical and psychological reflection, the dehumanisation division was used as a reference point, as proposed by the Italian researcher Chiara Volpato, due to the particular forms which it can take. As a result of detailed analysis, the author comes to the conclusion that certain remedies for the categorical and essentialising character of dehumanisation could be a turn towards the “I – thou” relationship, well described by the philosophy of dialogue. This, in turn, could contribute to the prevention of harmful social antagonisms and allow one to notice that “the Other” is not a hostile and threatening individual, but rather an equal partner in a dialogical relationship.
Artykuł stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie czy specyficzny sposób postrzegania „obcego”, zbadany i opisany przez psychologię społeczną, ma swój filozoficzny odpowiednik w naukach o moralności oraz czy możliwe jest przejście z refleksji psychologicznej do namysłu etycznego. Autor rozważa także szczególny charakter trzech rodzajów relacji „my – oni”, „swoi – obcy”, „ja – ty”. W ustaleniu różnic i podobieństw między refleksją filozoficzną a psychologiczną wykorzystany został podział dehumanizacji ze względu na formy, które może ona przybierać, zaproponowany przez włoską badaczkę, Chiarę Volpato. W wyniku szczegółowych analiz autor dochodzi do wniosku, że pewnym remedium na kategorialny i esencjalizujący charakter dehumanizacji jest zwrócenie się ku relacji „ja – ty”, opisywanej przez filozofię dialogu. Zwrot ten mógłby przyczynić się do zapobiegania szkodliwym antagonizmom społecznym i pozwala dostrzec w „Innym” nie wrogie i zagrażające indywiduum, lecz równorzędnego uczestnika dialogicznej relacji.

Opis:

The article presents an original study based on the perspectives on diversity, not solely cultural but also diversity of the disabled and beyond the canon of corporeality. The conducted studies provided an answer to the question: Did the method of intersemiotic translation in transcoding the content of literary works on intercultural and inclusive topics into the language of theatre and visual arts impact the change of attitude towards cultural diversity? In the course of this pedagogical experiment, supplemented with survey and observation techniques, the attitudes of five – and six-year-old children (the experimental group, first and second control group) towards differences in the cognitive, emotional and behavioral components were distinguished. The method of intersemiotic translation implemented in an experimental group, leading to the division of children’s attitudes towards people who are different, as well as the acquired knowledge about otherness and discovering literary texts, developed methods for formulating accurate results in children. The results obtained are of great importance for intercultural education and carry great value, because the conducted experiment and the intercultural texts used aroused children’s interest in otherness, allowed them to understand it and understand that there is no alien thing that could not become their own.
Artykuł prezentuje część badań realizowanych w ramach pracy doktorskiej, której przedmiotem dociekań było sprawdzenie, jak postrzegane są: odmienność kulturowa, osoby z niepełnosprawnościami i poza kanonem cielesności przez dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym. Przeprowadzone badania pozwoliły odpowiedzieć na pytanie: Czy metoda przekładu intersemiotycznego w przekodowaniu treści utworów literackich o tematyce międzykulturowej i inkluzyjnej na język teatru i plastyki wpłynęła na zmianę postaw wobec odmienności kulturowej? Podejmując się badań na drodze eksperymentu pedagogicznego, uzupełnionego o techniki: ankiety i obserwacji, wyodrębniono postawy dzieci pięcio-sześcioletnich w przedszkolu (grupa eksperymentalna, kontrola pierwsza i druga) wobec odmienności w komponentach: poznawczym, emocjonalnym i behawioralnym. Metoda przekładu intersemiotycznego wdrożona w grupie eksperymentalnej spowodowała zmianę negatywnego nastawienia dzieci do osób odmiennych, a zdobyta wiedza o odmienności i odkrywanie tekstów literackich wykształciły u dzieci umiejętność formułowania trafnych wniosków. Uzyskane wyniki mają duże znaczenie dla edukacji międzykulturowej i niosą ze sobą wielką wartość, ponieważ przeprowadzony eksperyment i wykorzystane teksty międzykulturowe zaciekawiły dzieci tematyką odmienności, pozwoliły ją zrozumieć i pojąć, że nie ma rzeczy obcej, która nie mogłaby się stać swoją.

The reportages analyzed in the article are interpreted as texts that illustrate the ways in which knowledge about socialist countries in the era of increasing censorship is shaped. The main purpose of the article is to present how the authors of the reportages reproduce colonial discourse, replacing the ideological fiction of a colonizer with fiction, created for the sake of the totalitarian state.

Artykuł poświęcony jest problematyce osób z niepełnosprawnością we współczesnej literaturze ukraińskiej. Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na specyfikę ujęcia problemu Innego, w szczególności osoby z zespołem Tourette’a, obecnej w powieści (Nie)widzialni współczesnego ukra- ińskiego pisarza Iwana Bajdaka. Zaakcentowano bezpośredni związek niepełnosprawności (zespołu Tourette’a) autora z jego powieścią. Zauważono, że obecność w powieści bohaterów z niepełnospraw- nością nacechowana jest kondycją fizyczną samego autora, który przy ich pomocy stara się nie tylko demonstrować własne wartości i wytyczne, lecz także skłaniać ludzi i społeczeństwo do akceptacji Innego jako odmiennego. Wszakże pragnienie zrozumienia, miłości i wsparcia osób z niepełnospraw- nością napotyka trudności z powodu stereotypów w społeczeństwie, w którym często nie ma miejsca dla głównego bohatera Adama, ponieważ dla ludzi pozostaje on Innym, Obcym lub, jak pisze autor na początku powieści, „Nie takim”. Ponadto powieść ma pomóc osobom niepełnosprawnym zrozu- mieć siebie i Innych, a co najważniejsze, zaakceptować swoją wyjątkowość i nauczyć się siebie kochać.
The article is devoted to the theme of people with disabilities in modern Ukrainian literature. The purpose of the article is to analyze the issues which a person with Tourette’s syndrome has in modern society, as described in the novel (In)visible by Ivan Baidak. Based on the interpreta- tion, it can be concluded that in the novel, the presence of characters with disabilities is marked by the physical condition of the author himself. With their help, he seeks not only to declare his own values and guidelines, but also to persuade people to accept the Other as a part of society. The desire for understanding, love and support fails due to the prevailing stereotypes in society, in which there is often no place for the protagonist Adam, because for people he remains the Other, a Stranger, or, as the author says at the beginning of the novel, the “Unlike”. In addition, the novel aims to help people with disabilities understand themselves and, most importantly, accept their uniqueness and learn to love themselves.

W obliczu coraz bardziej komplikującej się sytuacji imigracyjnej we Francji, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do ludności wyznania islamskiego, warto postawić pytanie o Polaków przybywających w zauważalny sposób do tego kraju przynajmniej od XIX wieku. W powszechnym odczuciu stanowią tam mało wyróżniającą się grupę imigrantów, co więcej – od wielu lat wpisującą się w model francuskiej integracji. Jednakże tego typu wyobrażenie nie koresponduje z obrazem imigracji polskiej, który wyłania się z publikacji naukowych, stanowiących przedmiot dyskusji w artykule. Jak się okazuje, Polacy jawią się w nich jako grupa nadal „obca”. Dlaczego? W odpowiedzi zostaną rozwinięte trzy myśli. Po pierwsze teksty francuskich badaczy poświęcone polskiej migracji ujawniają żywotność francuskiej dominacji politycznej, która w postkolonialnym kontekście polega na stanowieniu standardów światopoglądowych wolnych „od hermetycznych ideologii i wszelkich fundamentalizmów”. Po drugie, Polacy od wieków wpisują się w stereotyp „ubogiego, ale obcego kulturowo sojusznika” politycznego Francji. Po trzecie, przybysze z Polski zawsze byli klasyfikowani jako wyrazisty przypadek biednej imigracji zarobkowej. Artykuł podejmuje zatem refleksję nad zjawiskiem imigracji w kontekście relacji dominacji polityczno-kulturowej Francji w Europie i na świecie, ale także w odniesieniu do materii tekstu pisanego naukowego, jako kulturowego i zarazem politycznego narzędzia konstruowania Innego/Obcego.
In the face of the increasingly complex immigration situation in France, particularly with regard to the Muslim population, a question well worth asking is one about Poles, who have been arriving in noticeable numbers to settle down in France at least since the nineteenth century. In the general perception Polish immigrants are not a very conspicuous group; what is more, they have been fitting well into the model of French integration for many years. Still, this image fails to correspond with the picture of Polish immigration which emerges from scientific publications discussed in this article. As it turns out, Poles appear in those publications as a group that is still considered ‘alien.’ Why? The answer to this question will be given through the investigation of three lines of thought. Firstly, texts of French researchers devoted to the subject of Polish migration reveal the perseverance of French political domination, manifesting itself – in the post-colonial context – in formulating world outlook standards free from ‘hermetic ideologies and any form of fundamentalism.’ Secondly, for centuries the Polish people have been stereotypically perceived as France’s ‘poor, yet culturally alien’ political ally. Finally, immigrants from Poland have always been classified as evident representatives of impoverished labour migrants. Thus, the article offers a reflection on the phenomenon of immigration in the context of France’s political and cultural domination in Europe and the world, but also in relation to written scientific texts as cultural and political tools for constructing the figure of the Other/Alien.

Opis:

The purpose of the study is to investigate what communication and media technologies and information operations are used by the mass media of the Russian Federation in relation to Ukraine to propagate the image of the “other/alien”. The methodology chosen for the work combines the application of the following methods and approaches: network analysis, SWOT-analysis, system, integrated and civilization approaches, system analysis, method of systematization and classification, methods of analysis, synthesis, objectivity, generalizations, analogies, case study, etc. The article explores the use of communication, media and information-psychological technologies by the Russian mass media to create and effectively promote the image of an enemy, alien, the other during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which began in 2014. The authors insist that the “Russkiy Mir” idea is promoted through the propaganda and manipulation resulting in the image of the adversary of this idea – “the other.” The “Russkiy Mir” foe does not perceive everything with the designation “Russian” as a priori positive and better, doubt the correctness of such a position, and therefore wishes evil to the supporters of the “Russkiy Mir”. Information operations and the most widespread media technologies in the Russian-Ukrainian information warfare are analyzed to model the image of “the other” as a threat. Prospects for further scientific researches are connected with the study of new scientific concepts that is some network-centric warfare, hybrid warfare, cyberwarfare, asymmetric warfare, undeclared information warfare, and others.
Celem pracy jest zbadanie, jakie technologie komunikacyjne, medialne oraz operacje informacyjne są wykorzystywane przez środki masowego przekazu Federacji Rosyjskiej w odniesieniu do Ukrainy do propagowania wizerunku „innego/obcego”. Wybrana metodologia pracy łączy w sobie zastosowanie następujących metod i podejść: analiza sieciowa, analiza SWOT, podejście systemowe, zintegrowane i cywilizacyjne, analiza systemowa, metoda systematyzacji i klasyfikacji, metody analizy, synteza, obiektywność, uogólnienia, analogie, case-study itp. Artykuł dotyczy wykorzystania technologii komunikacyjnych, medialnych i informacyjno-psychologicznych przez rosyjskie środki masowego przekazu do kreowania i efektywnej promocji wizerunku innego wroga, obcego w czasie konfliktu ukraińsko-rosyjskiego, który rozpoczął się w 2014 r. Autorzy twierdzą, że to poprzez propagandę i manipulację promuje się ideę „Russkiego miru” oraz tworzy się wizerunek przeciwnika tej idei – „innego”, który nie postrzega wszystkiego z określeniem „rosyjski” jako a priori pozytywny i lepszy, poddaje wątpliwości słuszność takiego stanowiska, a zatem życzy zła zwolennikom „Russkiego miru”. Operacje informacyjne i najbardziej rozpowszechnione technologie medialne w rosyjsko-ukraińskiej wojnie informacyjnej są analizowane w celu modelowania obrazu „innego” jako zagrożenia. Perspektywy dalszych badań naukowych wiążą się z badaniem nowych koncepcji naukowych, czyli wojny sieciocentrycznej, wojny hybrydowej, cyberwojennej, asymetrycznej, niezgłoszonej wojny informacyjnej i innych.

W artykule omówiono obraz postawy patriotycznej, a także sposoby prezentowania przedstawicieli kultur innych niż polska wyłaniające się ze współczesnych piosenek dziecięcych. W wyniku jakościowej analizy tekstów i nagrań autorka zrekonstruowała modele patriotyzmu, które są promowane przez utwory adresowane do najmłodszych, a zwłaszcza tzw. „patriotyzm symboliczny”, ukierunkowany jedynie na rozbudzanie emocjonalnego przywiązania do ojczyzny, a nie na faktyczne zaangażowanie w pracę na jej rzecz. Z zaprezentowanych badań wynika również, że tylko nieliczne piosenki dziecięce propagują postawę inkluzywną wobec reprezentantów innych narodowości, zaś zawarta w piosenkach wiedza na ich temat często odzwierciedla krzywdzące stereotypy.
The article discusses the image of the patriotic attitude, as well as the ways of presenting the representatives of various cultures emerging from contemporary Polish children’s songs. As a result of the qualitative analysis of the texts and recordings, the author reconstructed the models of patriotism promoted by the songs addressed to children, especially the so called “symbolic patriotism”, aimed only at awakening emotional attachment to the motherland, and not at actual commitment to work for its benefit. The presented research also shows that only a few children’s songs promote an inclusive attitude towards foreigners, and the information about them contained in the songs often reflects harmful stereotypes.

This article examines the connexion between literature and art based on the example of the works of the writer Radek Knapp and the artist Alfred Kubin. Radek Knapp, the Austrian writer of Polish descent, is known as an author of optimistic and funny novels. Alfred Kubin, author of the novel The Other Side, was very appreciated for his illustrations during his lifetime. Many of his drawings are clothed in dark shadow and they are in contrast to the optimistic prose by Knapp. The idea to illustrate the 41 prints by Alfred Kubin with words was born in the Leopold Museum in Vienna. The short story by Radek Knapp, Die Stunde der Geburt / The Hour of Birth (2017) is, on the one hand, an artistic dialogue between writer and painter, and on the other, it becomes an universal story about searching for the meaning in life.
Das Anliegen dieses Beitrags besteht darin, das Verhältnis zwischen Literatur und Malerei am Beispiel von den Werken Radek Knapp und Alfred Kubin zu untersuchen. Die Romane und Erzählungen von Radek Knapp, dem österreichischen Schriftsteller polnischer Herkunft, zeichnen sich durch Witz, Pfiff und Humor aus. Alfred Kubin, Graphiker und Autor des Romans Die andere Seite, wurde zu seinen Lebzeiten vor allem für seine Buchillustrationen geschätzt. Viele Bilder von Kubin sind von der Dunkelheit verhüllt, was im starken Kontrast zu dem heiteren Ton der Prosa von Radek Knapp steht. Die Idee, die einundvierzig Graphiken von Kubin mit dem Text zu illustrieren, war die Voraussetzung für die Sonderausstellung in Wiener Leopold Museum. Die Erzählung von Radek Knapp Die Stunde der Geburt / The Hour of Birth (2017) ist nicht nur der Katalog zur erwähnten Ausstellung, sondern auch der künstlerische Dialog zwischen dem Schriftsteller und dem Zeichner sowie auch eine universelle Geschichte von der Suche nach dem Sinn des Lebens.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest wzajemna relacja literatury i malarstwa poddana analizie na przykładzie twórczości Radka Knappa i Alfreda Kubina. Radek Knapp, austriacki pisarz polskiego pochodzenia, zasłynął jako autor tryskających humorem powieści  i opowiadań. Alfred Kubin, autor powieści Die andere Seite (Po tamtej stronie), za życia ceniony był przede wszystkim za swoją pracę ilustratorską. Wiele rysunków Kubina spowija mroczna aura, która żywo kontrastuje z pogodnym tonem prozy Knappa. Idea zilustrowania słowem czterdziestu jeden grafik Kubina przyświecała twórcom wystawy w wiedeńskim Leopold Museum. Opowiadanie Radka Knappa Die Stunde der Geburt / The Hour of Birth (2017) jest nie tylko katalogiem wspomnianej wystawy, ale i artystycznym dialogiem pisarza z rysownikiem oraz uniwersalną opowieścią o poszukiwaniu sensu życia.

L’articolo si concentra sulla descrizione, presente in quasi tutte le opere di Kazimiera Alberti tra le due guerre, dell’analisi letteraria dei problemi sociali. Ciò che è evidente in questo lavoro è la “gerarchia” delle persone che soffrono per le disuguaglianze sociali, economiche, etniche o legate al sesso. Questa “gerarchia” può essere paragonata ai gironi dell’inferno, sebbene in questo caso il livello della sofferenza non dipende dai peccati commessi ma dal grado di rifiuto della società. L’ Alberti colloca gli ibridi culturali ed etnici nel più profondo cerchio dell’inferno – sono visti come stranieri (e spesso non come esseri umani) da entrambe (o più) culture / comunità da cui provengono.
The paper focuses on an undercurrent analysis of social problems present in almost all Kazimiera Alberti’s work written in an interwar period. A kind of “hierarchy” of people suffering from social, economic, ethnic and gender inequality is evident in Alberti’s works. This “hierarchy” could be considered as hell circles, although a gradation of pain and misery depends on a level of social rejection, not on committed sins. Alberti puts cultural and ethnic hybrids in the deepest circle of hell – those people are perceived as others/aliens (and often not as human beings) by both (or more) cultures/communities, they are “made” from.

Opis:

This paper focuses on pozostali / pozostałe (the remaining) and reszta czegoś (the rest of something), which function as indicators of reference. It is the aim of the undertaken analysis to determine how these indicators participate in the mechanism of delineating a set of objects. Additionally, the analysis is intended to describe the semantic relationship which occurs between the examined units, and in particular to verify the hypothesis that they are equivalent. Also, the study concerns the dependencies between the abovementioned expressions and a simpler qualifi er inny (another) (in its plural forms inni / inne (other / the others)). All of the considered units are indicators of general reference, i.e. they identify a set, and it is their characteristic that this set is relativised to another set delineated earlier. However, they are not synonyms. Differences between pozostali / pozostałe and reszta czegoś are noticeable at the level of defi ning the identifi ed sets (opposition: distributivity – collectivity), while inny (inni / inne), an expression that is juxtaposed with them, is their hypernym. The study offers detailed reasons for the solutions developed in the course of the analysis.
