Opis:
During the 18th century, an increasingly strong individualistic attitude in the way of understanding the relationship between man and the tangible world spread throughout Europe. The legal institution which, more than any other, suffered from the effects of this reductionism was the Property as victim of incredible compression in comparison to medieval world. The exclusive model that the new Enlightenment and the bourgeois mentality wanted to adopt was the individual Property, to the detriment of all those forms of possession documented in the Middle Ages. The present study intends to investigate, in the geographical context of the Papal States, the great juridical dispute between the individualistic model – endorsed by the Sacred Legislator – and that of a collectivistic nature defended by the Community.

Opis:
The myth of Paris, formed in the Russian literature of the 18th – early 19th centuries, is an expression of the mythological consciousness in which the ‘space – time’ dichotomy is cyclical: it is a myth of eternal return. This Parisian myth was based on a set of oppositions between the cultural and intellectual orientations in the two countries. The Russian consciousness was characterized by a sense of lack of liberty and by inclination for reflection and hesitation, whereas the enlightened France prided itself on the clarity and concreteness of its thinking and was highly aware of its pioneering role in the political and cultural world of its time. Therefore, the Russian Parisian myth was accompanied by the motifs of travel, escape, release – an ‘eternal return’ to a dream. Several generations of Russian writers, from Trediakovsky to Pushkin, impressed it on the mythological consciousness of their readers by establishing an image of Paris as a feast of life, as a city of exceptional power of expression.

Opis:
In the beginning the author shows the historical process through which the concept of collegium took shape as a university residence for students and professors, a boarding house for students (not only in Poland but also in such countries as France, Italy, England, Spain, and Germany), a secondary school and a semi-high school (occupational or other) before going to university. The further parts of the paper is devoted to collegia as secondary schools. Starting from the 16th century on, collegia (secondary schools) were established in Poland. They were run by religious orders which can be defined as teaching orders. They were as follows: Jesuits, Piarists, Theatins, and Basilians. In the period of the Enlightenment, ie in the second half of the 18th century, other orders joined them. In order to satisfy the social need, they organized and ran secondary schools, e.g. Benedictines, Cistercians, Friars of the Tomb of the Lord, Regular Lateran Canons, Bartolomites, (also called communists for they strictly abode by the life in a religious community). The religious collegia comprised the teaching staff with its rector at the head, a number of didactic rooms, a church, and the religious home (with different names), the boarding house called a convict, a library, and a theatrical hall. In bigger centres there wad a printing house, a pharmacy with a hospital, research-didactic studies, an astronomical observatory, (botanic and fruit) gardens, workshops for production and service, and other buildings. The author gives the number of those collegia, discusses their structure and curricula in particular periods from the 16th to the 18th century. Similarly, he has characterized noble convicts, being part of the collegium and occupied with elite education for the future politicians and state officials. Their students came from nobel and magnate families. Now diocesan seminars were important didactic-educational institutions (in the 17th-18th centuries they provided a two-year and in the 19th century a four-year tuition. They were run by the Congregation of Missionaries of St Vincent a Paulo (Congregatio Sacerdotum Saecularium Missionis S.V. a Paulo). Finally, the author quotes a number of printing houses at the above collegia and seminar in Poland in the years 1700-1864 and points to the main types of their publishing production, such as: various kinds of handbooks, ABC books, catechisms, didactic manuals, calendars, posters and theatrical plays, sermons, prayer books, liturgical, historical, theological, and fiction works. He postulates further reach on the collegia and religious printing houses.

Opis:
Najwięcej urodzeń nieślubnych odnotowano w porze jesienno-zimowej – 54,5%, szczególnie w styczniu i lutym (poczęcia w kwietniu i maju). Najmniej dzieci nieślubnych przyszło na świat w czerwcu, sierpniu i listopadzie (poczęcia jesienne i zimowe). Większość dzieci z nielegalnych związków została ochrzczona w pierwszym dniu po urodzeniu (42%). W dniu urodzenia ochrzczono 17,8%.
The article presents extramarital births in the Roman-Catholic Parish in Łąka, in the Land of Pless, in Upper Silesia. The research has been based on the existing parish registers of baptism for the years 1664–1914. In that period 839 extramarital children were born in the parish, which is 7.6% of all the births. Of those 839 children 15 were stillborn babies, which means that there were 824 baptised extramarital children. The parish registers do not contain any information on the fathers and the data concerning the social, professional and territorial background of the mothers are rather poor. The most extramarital births used to occur in Autumn and Winter (54.5%), especially in January and February (conceived in April and May). The least extramarital births used to occur in June, August and November (conceived in Autumn and Winter). Most of the extramarital children were baptised on the first day after their birth (42%). On the very day of their birth 17.8% kids were baptised. 89.9% of the extramarital children – as in the case of the rest of the kids – were presented for baptism by a woman and a man. Only 10% infants were presented to baptism by one person, usually a woman. The above presented questions have been drawn up thanks to the aggregative method. The number of extramarital births in a rural parish is surprisingly high in comparison to others within the Regierungsbezirk Oppeln. The seasonal character of extramarital births did not differ from the seasonal character of the births of other children. And neither did the procedures of baptism in the two groups.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to describe the image of Grodno Castle in Zagórze Śląskie in the iconography from the $18^{th}$ and $19^{th}$ centuries. The subject of the research covered graphics which were made by draftsmen and engravers at the end of the 18th and the $1^{st}$ half of the $19^{th}$ centuries, i.e., at the moment of the greatest changes in the substance of the monument. The article analyzes the state of preservation of the walls of Grodno Castle in individual representations. First of all, the analysis covered residential wings of the upper castle as well as the buildings of the lower courtyard with particular emphasis on the elements destroyed, dismantled, or rebuilt during transformations of the castle in the $19^{th}$ century. Historic, analytical, and comparative methods were applied in our research. During the analysis, it was possible to describe and indicate the non-existent fragments of the upper castle buildings. According to the author, the gable above the southern wing and the attics are particularly important. The information collected in this way may be helpful in the future when trying to reconstruct the historic roof and restore its cubature. From the 1820s to the end of the century, major changes also took place in the lower courtyard. The farm buildings were demolished, i.e. stables, a shed and a bakery building with a bathhouse. The remnants of early modern roundel bastions have been adapted to tourist needs. The described non-existent structures of the lower castle may also be helpful in the future when trying to reconstruct these buildings.
Podczas badań stosowano metody historyczno-analityczne i porównawcze.

Opis:
The parish in Abramowice was mentioned for the first time in 1398, when the heir of the village, Sieciech, gave about 50 ha of unsettled land to the newly built church dedicated to The Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. James. In the Middle Ages, the parish also included neighbouring villages: Dominów, Skrzynice, Śmiłów (present Ćmiłów) and Wilczopole. In addition, the town of Głusk, after its foundation in 1687, became a part of the parish of Abramowice. In the 19th century, the following villages, from the Lublin parish, were incorporated into the Abramowice parish: Dziesiąta, Żabia Wola as well as settlements created about half of the 19th century: Kalinówka, Kliny and Kaleń. In the 20th century new parishes were established in some of these places. At present the Abramovice parish, apart from the districts of Lublin-Abramowice and Głusk, includes: Dominów and Wólka Abramowicka, located in the district of Głusk. Analysing the canonical visitations of the 18th century, it was possible to determine that the parish church in Abramowice dedicated to St. James the Greater Apostle had been built in 1674, and consecrated by the Bishop of Krakow Mikołaj Oborski the following year. It is also mentioned that originally the church was dedicated only to St. James the Great, but later other dedications were added: the Transfiguration, the Assumption and St. Adalbert. The church which have survived until today was built between 1786 and 1790 on the initiative of Rev. Wincenty Jezierski. It was consecrated in 1796 by the bishop of Chełm and Lublin Wojciech Skarszewski. The church was expanded in 1906 in accordance with the design of the famous Warsaw architect Stefan Szyller. Among other buildings which have survived are the neo-gothic bell tower and morgue, dating back to the end of the 19th century, and the presbytery of the years 1727-1728, expanded at the end of the 18th century, with a monumental six-column portico.

Opis:
The origins of the parish in Zemborzyce, which was probably created soon after the foundation of the village, dates back to the beginning of the 15th century. In 1748, the parish of Zemborzyce consisted of six villages: Zemborzyce, Krężnica (a branch), Trzeszkowice, Osmolice, Prawiedniki and Żabia Wola. It was inhabited by approximately 2,000 faithful. In the parish there was a hospital, which was located in an old building. The parish endowment included arable land, a garden, the right to fish on the River Bystrzyca, a brewery and a taberna with propination laws. In 1779, a new presbytery was built. The outbuildings included: a farm house, a granary, a stable, a cowshed, a barn, a shed for oxen, small stables and pigsties. At the church square there was also a building for an organist. In 1784, a new hospital was built. In 1849, the buildings at the church, apart from the presbytery, included: a servants' house, a curate’s house, a hospital, an inn and the following outbuildings: a stable, a coach house, a granary, a cowshed and a spacious barn. None of these buildings has survived until the present day. The wooden church of Zemborzyce was built in 1717, in place of the previous one. It was renovated several times. It was located to the east of the present church, at the former main road through the village, running over the River Bystrzyca. After constructing the brick church, which exists today, the old church was moved to Motycze near Lublin in 1918. The  neo-Gothic brick church, which survived to the present day, was built in 1906-1907. It was designed by the architect of Radom, Augusta Załuski.

Opis:
Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (1758–1841) was a poet, playwright, novelist, historian, diarist, journalist, translator and politician. He circulated in culturally and politically significant entourages such as the court of the Czartoryski family and King Stanisław August Poniatowski, the societies of pre-revolutionary France; he was an adjutant and a personal secretary of Tadeusz Kościuszko; he was also acquainted with George Washington. During his life he carried out many long trips to various European countries; he lived in the USA for over 8 years. Fortunately for his descendants, he wrote "Pamiętniki czasów moich" [English: Memoirs of my times] which, along with "Podróże po Ameryce 1797–1807" [English: Travels throughout America 1797–1807], constitute a basic source for this article. His diary is the first extensive description of the USA from the turn of the 18th and the 19th centuries based on the personal observations of the author. A closer analysis of this rich source material allows us to reconstruct the outlines of the image of the new state in America created in the mind of this outstanding representative of Polish culture. The source research conducted here is of an exploratory nature. The work includes quotations from the writer’s diary following the rule of pars pro toto. As a result, the work constitutes merely an outline of the problem included in the title; it requires further research to be subsequently presented in a monograph, which would take into account all the cultural background of the Polish ideas concerning the USA in the 18th–19th centuries.

This paper describes some aspects of the lives and artistic activities of Anna Binetti, Maria De Caro, and Giovanna Campilli, “prima ballerinas” who lived between the second half of the 18 th century and the beginning of the 19 th century. This research aims to highlight how these personalities practised as choreographers at a time when this profession was principally a male prerogative. Through the analysis of ballet programmes and contemporary sources, this paper investigates an area that has been little explored in the studies of the history of dance that is, the female presence as an “artistic subject” in the theatre of Italian dance. Thus, this phenomenon is contextualised in the broader cultural landscape of the time and focuses on three case studies of women choreographers who, whilst isolated in their extraordinariness, often converged significantly in their performance venues, in particular in Venice and Naples, and in personalities such as Jean-Georges Noverre and Maria Carolina of Austria. What is most interesting is that this approach highlights possible relationship networks and, thus, may open new avenues of research.

Varlaam Shyshatsky (1750-1821) was a prominent figure in the Russian Orthodox Church. In this article, the author’s focus is on his personal library – one of the most substantial book collections in Eastern Europe in the second half of the 18th and early 19th centuries, which has never been analyzed before. The article not only analyzes the composition of Varlaam Shyshatsky’s library, but also compares this collection with the personal libraries of other figures belonging to the same social group. The analysis is grounded in the broad context of the history of reading and book culture in Europe. Based on a number of criteria, it is concluded that significant changes in the culture of reading took place in the Ukrainian lands of the Russian Empire in the second half of the 18th century – first and foremost the emergence of ‘extensive’ reading and development of a number of new cultural practices among the ‘enlightened elite’. The composition of the library of Varlaam Shyshatsky also attests to the cultural uniqueness of the region and argues in favor of the thesis about the existence of a ‘Ukrainian Enlightenment’ as a phenomenon with national and regional specifics of its own.

The principles of editing historical sources have been discussed for decades, but most of the dilemmas cannot be unequivocally resolved. These include the decision to translate a foreign language source into Polish. Several factors should be taken into consideration, above all: 1. The editorial practice; 2. The language of the source; 3. The type of the text and the recipient of the publication; 4. The availability of the original for researchers of the era. Each of these aspects deserves separate evaluation.

The paper deals with the French view on the morality of peoples considered uncivilized, specifically Southern Slavs inhabiting the territories of today’s Croatia and Montenegro. The problem of morality is analyzed first of all in the context of natural honesty, which was attributed to peoples considered uncivilized. The analysis uses not only the testimonies of French authors, but also French-language descriptions that were popular in France during the Enlightenment, especially the works of Alberto Fortis and Stefano Zannowich. These sources shaping the image of the Morlachs (Slavic shepherds living in provincial Dalmatia) or Montenegrins, which were popular in the second half of the 18th century, are compared with documents related to French rule in Dalmatia (1806–1813). The analysis has allowed to show what place the Slavic communities living in the peripheries of Europe at the time had in the Enlightenment’s discussions on the morality of civilized and savage people.

Opis:
One of the features of premodern era in Prussia was relatively low crime rate with a different structure than it is nowadays. Moreover, there was a different perception and functioning of sphere of justice and of law enforcement. With regard to the size of transgression, the rural territories characterized in minor transgression, whereas bigger cities characterized in more serious crimes; due to the fact that bigger cities did not give security against hunger, ensured anonymity and the ability for perpetrators to hide. Similarly to the contemporary world of crime, theft was a dominant crime, whereas murder was most severely punished. Furthermore, the role of crimes against morality was significant; importantly, the concept of sin was basically synonymous with crime and was reflected in the regulation matters. Generally, it was universal phenomenon and occurred not only in Prussia. Nevertheless, Prussia was reformed quicker. Moreover, the threat of vagrants and beggars, who did not have a dwelling, aroused concern; they might have constituted as much as 10% of the population in the 18th c. Aggressive behaviours and those associated with physical violence against women and children intensified. The ‘excessive’ beating was criticised, nonetheless the phenomena of beating as such was not considered as an offence. Violence com-mitted by a father and husband against his family belonged to the prerogatives of power. In the period of Enlightenment, the authorities of Prussia, and above all Frederick II brought about the elimination of a number of anachronisms in the perception and treatment of crime. Taking into consideration the European revolution, the above mentioned changes happened very quickly. Firstly, equality before the law was introduced, however it was not implemented properly; patrimonial jurisdiction, on the other hand, was at first limited and later on eliminated. Proportionate punishment appeared; tortures and the cruellest punishments ceased being applied. Imprisonment began to spread, along with the religious tolerance. Witch hunt and barbarous penalties for so-called moral offenses (sex before marriage, prostitution) were abandoned, likewise death punishment for homosexual and suicides etc. Since the 18th cen-tury the institution of the police began to develop, before that time it did not exist at all. The number of criminal activities increased due to urbanisation and industrialisation. Large agglomerations emerged, giving their dwellers anonymity; moreover, the phenomenon of strong family, which at the same time was an economic unit, withered. In the industrial capitalism the central place was occupied by the nuclear family. The member of this family was a worker who was at risk of unemployment with a weak sense of security. It is difficult to assess the impact of the increasing secularization on the increase in crime. However, the negative influence of wrecking the old social and community ties (religion, family, and commune) has to be highlighted. Rebellions caused by hunger (either connected with infertility or epidemics) were other major aspects of crime in the 19th c.

A drastic decrease in the European pond turtle population occurred at the end of 18th century and during the first half of 19th century. The exploitation of this species, as a source of food and drug substances, is nowadays almost forgotten. The present paper aimed at, firstly, underlining some historical sources concerning the exploitation of the European pond turtle. Secondly, its goal is to answer the following question: to what extent did the exploitation of the species contribute to the decline of the population? The author concludes with the importance and necessity of historical and economic analysis in order to understand the phenomenon of the decline of the European pond turtle population. This research, which must be continued by historians, will help the naturalists in action to protect and reintroduce the species into its former geographical range.

Opis:
Od 1765 r. relikwie bł. Jozafata Kuncewicza przechowywano w cerkwi klasztoru bazylianów w Białej Podlaskiej, wywarły one duży wpływ na szerzenie na Podlasiu unii brzeskiej. Miasto stało się miejscem kultu religijnego zarówno grekokatolików i rzymsko-katolików. Święto ku czci Jozafata obchodzono dwa razy do roku 26 września i 12 listopada, do uświetnienia nabożeństw sprowadzano kapelę instrumentalną z Leśnej Podlaskiej, oraz urządzano widowiska pirotechniczne. Relikwie przechowywano w trumnie, bogato zdobioną z szklanymi okienkami, zawierała większą część ciała męczennika od głowy do pasa bez jednego ramienia. W celu zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa relikwiom papieże kilkakrotnie wydawali dekrety, nakazywali sporządzać oględziny relikwiarza, trumnę zamykano dwoma zamkami, opieczętowywano i zabijano gwoździami. Ostatecznie szczątki Jozafata pogrzebano potajemnie w podziemiach cerkwi w 1873 r.
Since 1765, the relics of Blessed Josaphat Kuntsevych were stored in the Basilian monastery church in Biała Podlaska. They had an enormous impact on spreading the Union of Brest in Podlasie region. The town became a place of religious worship for both Greek and Roman Catholics. A feast in honor of Josaphat was celebrated twice a year, on September 26 and November 12. To add even more honor to the services, the instrumental band from Leśna Podlaska was invited and pyrotechnic spectacles were arranged. The relics were stored in a coffin, which was richly decorated with glass windows. It contained most of the martyr’s body from the head to the waist without one arm. In order to ensure the safety of the relics, pops issued several decrees, ordered inspections of the reliquary casket and the coffin itself had two locks, the seal and nails hammered. Despite numerous efforts to ensure security, in the 19th century the tomb was repeatedly desecrated by a novice of a local monastery, Orthodox clergy and lay people at the behest of tsarist authorities. The spread of the worship was halted by the dissolution of the Basilian monastery in 1864. The new pastor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s parish – Mikołaj Liwczak abolished annual carnivals in honor of the Saint and then removed the relics from the church for the renovation of the building. Eventually, the Josaphat’s remains were buried secretly in the church’s basement in 1873.

The modern phenomenon of a nation is directly connected with the outcomes of the French Revolution, the latter having predetermined the political, social and economic processes of the 19th century. With cosmopolitan empires becoming, so to say, “incubators” for the nations, the Russian Empire was no exception. Perception of the borders, territories and the population of the empire shaped the processes of capturing new territories, their further attribution to the newly formed imperial historical framework, which in the course of time impacted national constructs. The scientific implications of the phenomenon of an empire and imperial practices triggered the research in the field of imperial history. The tools of image-based geography allow to reveal additional details and peculiarities of states and nations developing within the imperial environment. The author focuses on the processes of projecting, mapping and visualizing the territories with their ethnic population. The article demonstrates the ways the political relevance impacted the layouts of regions, borders and demographic characteristics.

The mutual influences of Polish and Czech have been the subject of much research. Both of these West Slavic languages have similar developments not only in phonetics and morphology, but also in lexis. The separation of Bohemisms from the Polish language is very difficult from today’s point of view. The discovery of borrowings from Czech has already been the subject of research by many Polish and Czech linguists (A. Brückner, T. Lehr-Spławiński, S. Rospond, Z. Orłoś, B. Havránek, J. Damborský, etc.). In this study we try to determine the degree of influence of the Czech language on the regional variant of the Polish language of Těšín at the end of the 18th and the first half of the 19th century. As research material we used manuscripts of sermons of Protestant clergymen (15 manuscript texts in total). We performed their linguistic analysis and revealed a total of 43 units that could be clearly identified as Bohemisms. It was found that the proportion of Bohemisms in the examined texts was not significant and the forms used were found in common communication in dialect.

The aim of this article is to provide a holistic presentation of the genesis, intensity, and directions of movement, as well as the spatial and temporal distribution of the German national group which settled in Central Poland from the end of the 18th century to the 1820–1830 period. This paper analyses the determinants of the inflow of German immigrants, and their geographical origin, as well as the social and occupational structure. The settlers from German lands were a very diverse social group. In the case of first and second-generation immigrants who came to Central Poland, the social integration process was still quite slow. The colonists and settlers living in the diaspora developed a certain pattern of existence that focused on their immediate environment separating them from the outside world, while the retention of their mother tongue and religious tradition was more an expression of traditionalist consciousness than national identity.
