Opis:
George H. Mead ([1934] 1967) contended a person’s sense of self develops from language-based interactions with other humans in society. According to contemporary sociologists, a person’s sense of self is also influenced by non-verbal interactions with human and non-human animals. The present research extends Sanders (1993) work that examined how dog owners relate to their pets and come to develop a unique social identity for them. Through interviews with participants in prison-based animal programs (PAPs), this research explores whether inmates engaged in a similar process of assigning the animals with which they work a human-like identity. The implications of the relationships that develop in terms of desistance, which Maruna (2001) argued requires a redefinition of a person’s self-identity, are discussed.

Opis:
It is widely agreed that perspective-taking plays an important role in the development of children’s understanding of themselves and others as social agents with their own beliefs, desires, goals, and representations of the world. However, how perspective-taking is realized and how the ability of perspective-taking develops is a matter of dissensus. The two theories currently dominating social cognition research, theory-theory, and simulation-theory construe perspective-taking as modeling, thus as an individual and inferential process. Interactionist theories prioritize interpersonal interaction but deny perspective-taking a constitutive role by arguing for a basic, immediate understanding of self and others in interaction. Cognitivist accounts downplay the role of interaction, while interactionist accounts overemphasize the role of sub-symbolical processes. What is central to perspective-taking and its development, but missing in either approach is symbolically mediated interaction. The social-relational perspective dating back to Lev Vygotsky and George Herbert Mead cuts across this schism and offers valuable insight into how perspective-taking develops through symbolic activity within a social context. Adopting the basic elements of the social-relational framework, the present work argues that understanding of self and others depends on the development of perspective-taking ability through symbolically mediated interaction. Perspectives are primarily differentiated, assumed, and coordinated within social interaction and subsequently through the individual, cognitive operation of perspective-taking. Symbolic mediation facilitates this transition from the social enaction of perspective-taking to mental construal and coordination of perspectives by transforming the structure of action. Higher order mental processes are not presupposed but constituted by social interaction through the child’s internalization of the perspectival structure of symbolic communication.

This study focuses on classroom interaction during a geography lesson for 2nd year students in a French Secondary School. It deals with two phenomena: (i) the multi-participant organisation of this interaction; (ii) its task-oriented nature. In the turn, two issues are raised on the one hand, the role played in the interaction by the context of work with its written and pictorial artefacts and^ on the other hand, the various types of activities carried out by the teachers and the students. The teacher is the only one who knows the ultimate aim of the communicative event which he has planned with precision beforehand in a written form and which he effectuates through successive stages by presenting documents used to channel the students’ participation. This leads to students’ participating in diverse tasks which are not only didactic but furthermore (micro-)social. The synchronisation between the teacher’s acts and those of the students is ensured through the (ethno-) methods developed during their previous school experience and is specifically materialised, in a recurrent way, into the form of ternary pedagogical exchanges.

The article analyses the unsteady interaction of vortex structures in a turbine rotor passage. In the form of sample cases, two high-pressure steam turbine stages are examined: a standard stage, used as the reference, which reveals regular performance characteristics and distributions of flow parameters, and a low-efficiency stage, in which a large separation zone is observed in the rear part of the rotor passage. In the latter case the combined interaction of all vortices has been found to take an extremely complex course and be a source of remarkable flow fluctuations. The methodology applied for extracting particular vortex structures from the general flow pattern bases on comparing entropy distributions with corresponding velocity vectors. The reported vortex interaction patterns are believed to be representative for a variety of turbine constructions of both land, and marine applications.

Opis:
Child peer interaction in English as a foreign language (EFL) settings has recently received increasing attention with respect to age, instruction type and first language (L1) use, but longitudinal studies remain scarce and the effects of proficiency pairing and language choice on meaning negotiation strategies are still rather unexplored. Within a primary school EFL context, this paper aims to explore the amount and types of meaning negotiation, and the effects of time, proficiency pairing and language choice in a spot-the-differences task. Forty Catalan/Spanish bilingual children were paired into mixed and matched proficiency dyads, and their oral production was analyzed twice over the course of two years (i.e., 9-10 and 11-12 years old). The analysis included conversational adjustments, self- and other-repetition and positive and negative feedback in the learners’ L1 and second language (L2). Our data show that the amount of meaning negotiation is low, although L2 meaning negotiation is higher than L1 meaning negotiation, and all the strategies are present in the data except for comprehension checks. Time effects are hardly observed. However, proficiency pairing and language effects are more generally found, whereby mixed proficiency dyads tend to negotiate for meaning more than matched dyads and meaning negotiation instances are more frequent in the L2 than in the L1.

Opis:
The essential feature which decides upon human effectiveness and competitiveness in the outer world, is competence. So, competence is an attribute of an adequately or well qualified human being who, due to this feature, can be easily distinguished from other individuals. Moreover, the possession of knowledge and an array of qualifications is beneficial not only to the distinguished individual but to the environment in which he actively functions, playing various social roles. Nevertheless, competence is not a gift given to us at birth. Instead, we are born as “tabula rasa” and with time, while developing physically, we also develop intellectually. Therefore, human development is an element of human life where people are involved in a life-long transformational process characteristic of interaction and socialization, which in consequence brings people to their competence and competitiveness. Hence, the present article is devoted to a brief discussion over selected stages of human life and activity which foster personality through transformational development.

We present the principles underlying grammar design, highlight its modular architecture and show that the lexicon used is independent of the grammar formalism. We also introduce the “companion property”, and show that it helps to enforce grammar consistency.

In this article, we discuss strategies for interaction in spoken discourse, focusing on ellipsis phenomena in English. The data comes from the VOICE corpus of English as a Lingua Franca, and we analyse education data in the form of seminar and workshop discussions, working group meetings, interviews and conversations. The functions ellipsis carries in the data are Intersubjectivity, where participants develop and maintain an understanding in discourse; Continuers, which are examples of back channel support; Correction, both self- and other-initiated; Repetition; and Comments, which are similar to Continuers but do not have a back channel support function. We see that the first of these, Intersubjectivity, is by far the most popular, followed by Repetitions and Comments. These results are explained as consequences of the nature of the texts themselves, as some are discussions of presentations and so can be expected to contain many Repetitions, for example. The speech event is also an important factor, as events with asymmetrical power relations like interviews do not contain so many Continuers. Our clear conclusion is that the use of ellipsis is a strong marker of interaction in spoken discourse.

Hereby paper shows the structure of mutually connected thermal interactions in a machine tool, a tool and a workpiece, which finally leave their traces on a machined workpiece in form of machining errors. Thermal interactions of a machine tool and the environment on own and workpiece errors were discussed. Thermal interaction cases were considered, connected with the varying environment and the main drive operation, as well as total influence of the varying environment, main drive and two drives of controllable axes. The interactions of the cutting process itself were discussed, assuming three basic mechanisms: thermal, physically-mechanical and tribological. On the example of turning it was proven that the character of changes in total influences between the tool and workpiece has the shape of a temperature curve.

Opis:
Mathematical tools of category theory are employed to study the syntaxsemantics problem in the philosophy of mathematics. Every category has its internal logic, and if this logic is sufficiently rich, a given category provides semantics for a certain formal theory and, vice versa, for each (suitably defined) formal theory one can construct a category, providing a semantics for it. There exists a pair of adjoint functors, Lang and Syn, between a category (belonging to a certain class of categories) and a category of theories. These functors describe, in a formal way, mutual dependencies between the syntactical structure of a formal theory and the internal logic of its semantics. Bell’s program to regard the world of topoi as the univers de discours of mathematics and as a tool of its local interpretation, is extended to a collection of categories and all functors between them, called “categorical field”. This informal idea serves to study the interaction between syntax and semantics of mathematical theories, in an analogy to functors Lang and Syn. With the help of these concepts, the role of Gödel-like limitations in the categorical field is briefly discussed. Some suggestions are made concerning the syntax-semantics interaction as far as physical theories are concerned.

Opis:
In the article we make an analysis of a thesis that verbal symbolic interaction is a necessary condition of constructing self. The main concepts used in the paper are: symbolic interaction, self and corporality. The aforementioned thesis and the concept of symbolic interaction originate from G.H Mead, who set the trend of thinking about interaction in human society in sociology and social psychology. This influence is noticeable up to this day. Symbolic interaction as a tool of understanding others actions and informing partners about our intensions is clearly visible in “languagecentred” and anthropocentrically oriented analyses of interactions as well as in the concentration on linguistic conditions of creating a self. Self is understood as an interpreted concept of a person but mainly in a process of social perception of a human by others occurring in interactions based on verbal language. In the article we want to develop a thesis about “nonlinguistic” possibilities of constructing interactions and self. The aforementioned thesis has been many times elaborated so far together with critical analyses of G. H. Mead (Irvin, 2004, Sanders, 1993, 1999, 2003; Myers, 1999, 2003). We want to integrate these elaborations, including our empirical experiences from a research on “The Social World of Pet’s Owners’ (research done in 2001-2005) on theoretical level and concentrate more on corporality and emotions issues and their relations to symbolic interaction and self. G.H. Mead’s views on this topic are analysed with regard to their methodological consistency and adequacy. In the article there is another thesis proposed, that interactions between animals also have meanings and, sometimes, symbolic nature, or sometimes, non symbolic one, and not necessarily related to use of a verbal language. The creation of self is connected with issues of corporality that includes: 1. nonverbal communication, 2. a relation of bodies in physical space, 3. the so called “kinesthetic empathy”, 4. emotions connected with body, mind and self processes. These elements of corporality may be the basis for taking the role of other. Researches and analyses of many sociologists (beginning from Ch. H. Cooley) show that self is often pre-verbal and that exclusion of an individual from her/his surroundings takes place also with the aid of the body and emotions tightly connected with functioning of self. The analysis of interactions between humans and animals provides us with much methodological and theoretical inspiration. Those researches and analyses obviously face a problem of “anthropomorphization of human behaviour”, which is of frequent occurrence both among researchers and ordinary people. New sociological sub-discipline called the sociology of human - non-human animals relationships adds a lot of new threads to the abovementioned deliberations on conditions of constructing self.

This article explores the potential of the focus group to generate analyzable social interaction. We investigate the ways in which group interaction may lead to new insights using examples from a 2011 study on transformation at a South African university campus. Certain aspects of sociable interaction, such as communicative interaction, power and agency, conflict, as well as exchange are touched upon and their roles in the intersubjective construction of reality are emphasized. We also look at the role of the facilitator in setting up a successful focus group session and the ways in which a naturalistic interactional setting may compensate for the relative unnatural nature of the group situation. Our argument is for the realization of the potential of the focus group as a qualitative method of data collection that is inherently geared towards generating understanding of contested issues, as it allows for an exciting positioning of the researcher between that of interviewer and participant observer, readily able to experience interactional exchange first hand while subtly directing the group conversation into areas of special interest. We believe that the unique epistemological possibilities of the focus group merit a re-engagement with the method by any social scientist interested in the dynamics underlying the social construction of reality, as it offers a window into the ways in which unfolding reality is intersubjectively contested, debated, and finally agreed upon.

Nonlinear soil-linear structure computational strategy is commonly accepted in the community of geotechnical engineers using advanced finite element software for solving complex soil-structure interaction problems. However, further design procedure of the structural elements is carried out using increased values of the computed elastic stress resultants. It is absolutely not clear whether this method is conservative and, therefore, whether safe or not. To tackle this problem, a fully consistent nonlinear analysis of a deep excavation protected by the diaphragm wall is analysed here. The subsoil is modelled using the Hardening Soil model, while reinforced concrete is modelled using the modified Lee-Fenves model enhanced by the Eurocode 2 (EC2)-compatible creep module, developed by the author. It is shown that the commonly used nonlinear soil-linear structure computational strategy may yield insufficient amount of reinforcement from the ultimate limit state (ULS) and serviceability limit state (SLS) points of view. A consistent and conservative method of combining fully nonlinear analysis and the rules imposed by the EC2 is proposed.

The Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI) and Classroom Environment Scale (CES) were employed. Analysis of empirical data showed a statistically significant positive relationship between the interaction style-built teacher authority and classroom climate dimensions. The statistically significant positive relationship was between the interaction style dimensions: helpful, understanding, student responsibility and the classroom climate dimensions: involvement, task orientation, organisation and order, and rule clarity. A statistically negative relationship was found between the interaction style dimensions: uncertain, dissatisfied, admonishing and the classroom climate dimensions: teacher support, organisation and order, and rule clarity. According to our findings, authoritative teachers, perceived by students as good organisers, helpful, understanding, and giving responsibility, can create a positive climate in classrooms.

The focus of the article is on the questions and issues that have arisen in research on communication in second language contexts, as well as possibilities of addressing them that open up when one moves to the understanding of scientific inquiry as “a form of anti-disciplinary or transgressive knowledge, as a way of thinking and doing that is always problematizing” (Pennycook 2007: 37). The article aims to point to some issues in research on communication in a FL classroom where a transdisciplinary approach might prove useful or even necessary to address them. An expanded analysis of a classroom discussion carried out within Hymes’ model that includes different modes and forms of communication as well as aspects of on-goingly changing contexts should illustrate the benefits of applying a transdisciplinary approach in research on communication  in a second language classroom.

In this research, we propose to analyze the phenomenon of “word repetition” which is realized in the discursive exchange in contemporary spoken French. This will involve the repetitions of grammatical words that Morel and Danon-Boileau (1998) define as “functional words” (fr. mots outils) under the spontaneous oral French. The main objective of this research is to find answers to the following questions, and thus to highlight the salient points of this discursive fact which is repetition of functional words (word tools): a) What is the enunciative status of the phenomenon of repetition in verbal interaction? b) In which situation of enunciation the speaker uses the repetition?

In this paper I argue that the notions of speaker’s reference and semantic reference—used by Kripke in order to counter the contentious consequences of Donnellan’s distinction between the referential use and the attributive use of definite descriptions—do not have any application in the interpretive interaction between speaker and hearer. Hearers are always concerned with speaker’s reference. Either, in cases of cooperation, as presented as such by the speaker or, in cases of conflict, as perceived as such by the hearer. Any claim as to semantic reference is irrelevant for the purposes of communication and conversation. To the extent that the purpose of semantic theory is to account for linguistic communication, there is no reason to take definite descriptions to have semantic reference.

Numerical simulations of the pantograph-catenary dynamic interaction allow for assessment of the current collection quality provided by this subsystem at the design stage of the pantograph or the catenary system. In this paper, the authors present numerical results of simulations of the dynamic interaction between a pantograph and a catenary. Adopted catenary and pantograph models are consistent with the reference model presented in the EN 50318:2002 document, which describes the validation procedure of the simulation for the dynamic interaction between pantograph and overhead contact line. Authors have used the Finite Element Method to analyze this complex system. Ten catenary spans of simple catenary (one messenger wire and one contact wire) are modelled, each of them is 60m long. The pre-sag of the catenary is 0mm and the model of the catenary includes the stagger which equals ±200mm. The pantograph model consists of lumped masses which are connected each other with spring-damper elements. First, the static initial configuration is obtained (under gravity and tensioning loads), after which the dynamic transient simulation is conducted. Obtained results for the contact force and uplifts at supports are within the reference ranges presented in the EN 50318:2002 document, therefore it can be considered that the adopted model correctly reproduces the dynamic behaviour of the pantograph-catenary dynamic interaction.

Symbolic interactionists can gain much by engaging more with public audiences. One way to do this is through open-access publishing, such that the content of interactionist research is freely available to the global public. We reflect on the issue of public sociology within symbolic interactionism, considering the recent impact of digital technology and social media. Within this context, we consider the rise of the open-access movement in scholarly publishing, and consider strategies to better realize open-access in the symbolic interactionist field. We argue that doing this will greatly benefit the development of a more public interactionism moving forward.

Opis:
Juvenile hormone (JH) is essential for multiple physiological processes: it controls larval development, metamorphosis and adult reproduction. In insect hemolymph more than 99 % of JH is bound to juvenile hormone binding protein (JHBP), which protects JH from degradation by nonspecific hydrolases and serves as a carrier to supply the hormone to the target tissues. In Galleria mellonella hemolymph, JHBP is found in a complex with lipid-binding high molecular weight proteins (HMWP) and this interaction is enhanced in the presence of JH. In this report, we present studies on the interaction of JHBP with low molecular weight proteins (LMWP) in the hemolymph. Using ligand blotting we found that JHBP interacts with a protein of about 44 kDa. To identify the protein that preferentially binds JHBP, a LMWP fraction was applied to a Sepharose-bound JHBP and, after washing, the column was eluted with free JHBP acting as a specific competitor or with carbonic anhydrase as a negative control. The eluted proteins were separated by SDS/PAGE and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Isocitrate dehydrogenase was identified as a component of the supramolecular complex of JHBP with hemolymph proteins.

This study aims to explore the possibility of improving human-robot interaction (HRI) by exploiting natural language resources and using natural language processing (NLP) methods. The theoretical basis of the study rests on the claim that effective and efficient human robot interaction requires linguistic and ontological agreement. A further claim is that the required ontology is implicitly present in the lexical and grammatical structure of natural language. The paper offers some NLP techniques to uncover (fragments of) the ontology hidden in natural language and to generate semantic representations of natural language sentences using that ontology. The paper also presents the implementation details of an NLP module capable of parsing English and Turkish along with an overview of the architecture of a robotic interface that makes use of this module for expressing the spatial motions of objects observed by a robot.

In this article, we discuss ellipsis as an interactive strategy by analysing the author’s textchat corpus and the VOICE corpus of English as a Lingua Franca. It is found that there were fewer repetitions in the textchat data, and this is explained as a consequence of the textchat mode. Textchat contributions are preserved as long as the chat is active or has been saved, and therefore users can scroll through and review the discussion, compared to the more fleeting nature of oral conversation. As a result, repetition is less necessary. The frequency of other functions identified could be attributed to the topic of discourse. Discussions involve much ellipsis used to develop discourse, although some were self-presentations with repetition used to confirm details. Back-channel support and comments were often low because speakers instead used forms like yeah as supportive utterances.

This paper describes audio-visual speech recognition system for Polish language and a set of performance tests under various acoustic conditions. We first present the overall structure of AVASR systems with three main areas: audio features extraction, visual features extraction and subsequently, audiovisual speech integration. We present MFCC features for audio stream with standard HMM modeling technique, then we describe appearance and shape based visual features. Subsequently we present two feature integration techniques, feature concatenation and model fusion. We also discuss the results of a set of experiments conducted to select best system setup for Polish, under noisy audio conditions. Experiments are simulating human-computer interaction in computer control case with voice commands in difficult audio environments. With Active Appearance Model (AAM) and multistream Hidden Markov Model (HMM) we can improve system accuracy by reducing Word Error Rate for more than 30%, comparing to audio-only speech recognition, when Signal-to-Noise Ratio goes down to 0dB.

Trust development has been studied from many sociological perspectives. Despite its early ventures, a perspective that lags in its attendance to trust is symbolic interaction. Using data drawn from twenty four semi-structured interviews with Canadian university administrators (UAs), this paper revisits a Goffman-influenced conceptualization proposed by Henslin (1968) to frame the analysis of four trust development tactics: being visible, expressing sincerity and personalization, showing the face and establishing routine activity. Resistance encountered during trust development is also discussed. Findings are compared with previous studies of trust in professional, leadership and everyday life settings. The implications of this paper for future symbolic interactionist forays into the areas of trust and administration are also discussed.

The primarily goal of this study is to reveal a scaled soil-structure interaction model for small capacity shaking table testing instead of the full-scale field experiments. The prototype of soil-structure interaction system with frame-type building, resting on a sandy soil with shear wave velocity of 536 m/s and unit weight of 12.9 kN/m³ has been selected. For experimental investigations, the realistic site and building structures are scaled with a geometric scaling factor of 1:45. The test model, consisting of six-story steel frame-type building, natural soil and laminar soil container, is designed and constructed to realistically simulate the seismic soil-structure interaction effects of building structures in shaking table tests. In order to verify the geometric scaling factor, the dynamic properties of the fixed-base system for both prototype and scaled model are determined by using finite element analysis. Furthermore, the dynamic parameters for scaled model of a single layer soil, restricted with base-rock, have been compared numerically with the proposed laminar soil container, to provide a good agreement.

In this study, the effect of calcination temperature and time on the structure of calcinated magnesite was investigated. In addition, the effect of calcinated magnesite on rheology when added into bentonite suspension was also examined. Electrokinetic, rheological and stabilization studies including coagulation and gelation tests were performed to explain the mechanism of viscosity increase in bentonite suspension upon addition of the calcinated products. FTIR, SEM, BET analyses and rheological data were used to determine the transition degree of MgCO3 to MgO, and evaluate the structure of MgO and bentonite suspensions. The results from this study showed that specific surface area (SSA) and mean pore radius (MPR) values for the calcinated products were directly affected by the calcination temperature and time. According to the ignition loss and transition ratio from MgCO3 to MgO of the calcinated samples, it was found that the calcination was completed above 800 oC. In order to obtain a bentonite suspension with higher viscosity, interaction of the sufficient amount of MgO particles with bentonite particles were necessary. Based on these results, the formation of gelation and heterocoagulation between MgO and bentonite particles were found to be responsible for these effects.

Aim. The paper aims to investigate the students interactions engaged in mindful tasks in an English reading classroom. It attempts to explore whether there is any connection between being mindful and having a good interaction. Methods. For the research a case study approach was utilised, in which eight BA students majoring in English language and literature at the University of Mazandaran participated. They were divided into two groups of non-mindful and less mindful, each having four members based on their scores from Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). The data was collected in three sessions of critical reading practice, in which both groups were engaged in different forms of critical reading tasks. The less mindful group was encouraged to engage in some mindful activities prior to the critical reading tasks. All the sessions were video recorded and then transcribed for analysis. The transcribed data were analysed by the researcher and a second rater. Results. The results of the data analysis demonstrated that there were some minor differences in interactions of non-mindful and less-mindful group in critical reading tasks. The less-mindful group seemed to have more interactions than the non-mindful one. Conclusions. Due to the study limitations the results cannot be generalised. Originality. Mindfulness is a fairly new concept in English language teaching which is attracting attention as an alternative to promote learning. However, within the context of education, there have also been a select few studies that have focused on the benefits of mindfulness in English reading classrooms.

Aim. The aim of the article is to determine the status and purpose of philosophy of education, and to identify the peculiarities of its relationship with educational practice and pedagogical science. Concept. Philosophy of education and pedagogy explore different aspects of the same subject field – education. Realising different research functions, they do not act as competitors, but, on the contrary, have the potential for mutual complementarity and reciprocal strengthening of their cognitive capabilities. Results. Philosophy of education as a branch of applied philosophy is not an instrumental tool and cannot directly influence educational practice. It is designed to provide comprehension and understanding of the most important problems of the theory and practice of education. The role of mediator is played by another science of education – pedagogy. Conclusion. The most productive form of relationship between philosophy of education and pedagogical science is their interaction, which contributes to the mutual enrichment, building up and the fullest realisation of their special research capabilities. Pedagogy has a choice of philosophical and educational concepts to develop educational theories which are verified by experiment and directly implemented in practice. Philosophy of education realises its theoretical functions at all stages of educational activity. Cognitive value. The article presents a new perspective on the problem of the relationship between educational philosophy and educational practice. It is argued that the most efficient channel of transferring philosophical and educational ideas into practice is pedagogical science.

Prostaglandins have been already pretty well rccognized as metabolic regulators in vertebebrata tissues mainly in mammals. Less reports concerned the occurrence of prostaglandins in invertebrates. In the present review we summarise literature data about the presence of prostaglandins and other eicosanoids in various groups of parasites and their possible role in hostparasite interaction. Prostaglandins have also been found in very primitive organisms as bacteria, varions plants and protozoa.
