Cyberculture is not only a technologically disembodied information sphere but also a contemporary dominant form of culture. This thesis is presented by arguing that cyberculture forms virtual habitus that is highly unconscious for its users. At the same time, virtual habitus functions as a technology that gathers information about its users. It can be said that it also learns about the preferences of its users. This is established by a set of algorithms that are highly interconnected at a certain level, one to which users of cyberculture do not have any access. The article examines the consequences of functioning of humans in this kind of technologically mediated culture. There is a connection between virtual habitus (mostly unconscious) and antropotechnics (mostly conscious) – this intersection within cyberculture is presented as a basic mechanism that governs the being of its users. There article also features interpretations of ways of creating virtual habitus and their growing importance within contemporary society. In the conclusion, there is disputed a necessary role of philosophy in deconstructing the automatic character of cyberculture.

This article is about the phenomenon of educational inequality and how to explain it from a conflict theoretical perspective. In a first step, I will discuss the rational-choice approach which is used in quantitative educational research and then I will explore the question of how educational inequality can be explained from the perspective of Bourdieu's sociology. In this context, I will discuss the phenomenon of cultural fit, followed by insights into the study "The fine differences in school careers". In conclusion, an inequality-reflective school development perspective is argued, which places at its centre the awareness that phenomena of educational inequality cannot be explained exclusively by rational choices.
Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy zjawiska nierówności edukacyjnych, które próbuję wyjaśnić poprzez zastosowanie perspektywy teoretycznej konfliktu. Najpierw omówię podejście racjonalnego wyboru, które jest często stosowane w ilościowych badaniach edukacyjnych dotyczących nierówności edukacyjnych. Następnie nakreślę, w jaki sposób nierówności edukacyjne mogą być objaśniane z perspektywy koncepcji Bourdieu. Skoncentruję się na zjawisku dopasowania kulturowego i podzielę się spostrzeżeniami z mojego badania empirycznego „Drobne różnice w kulturze”. W podsumowaniu będę opowiadać się za perspektywą rozwoju szkoły odzwierciedlającą nierówności, która w swoim centrum stawia świadomość, że zjawisk nierówności edukacyjnych nie da się wyjaśnić wyłącznie za pomocą racjonalnych wyborów.

In the study, the author refers to R. Kwaśnica’s concept of two rationalities and to P. Bourdieu’s constructivist structuralism. She assumes that the teacher’s activity takes place within the limits of two (adaptive and emancipatory) rationalities in a specific “field”, with a particular social, cultural and human capital, and with a developed habitus which determines educational practice. A research report is presented. This is done in the form of a record of the current state and socio-civilizational changes which have influenced teachers working in the southern part of the Polish-Czech borderland. Research results show both the continuity and change of the teacher’s behavior and activity from the perspective of social time and social change. They allow for a closer insight into the structure of pedagogical activities and their effects. The strategy of lon- gitudinal comparisons was applied. Diagnostic polling and the interview were used along with the (repeatable) panel method. The studies were conducted in time spans (1998, 2008, 2016) and they concerned the measurement of the teacher’s perception of the “other” learner in class, self-reflection upon the role applied by the teacher, and the teacher’s competences. The obtained research results allow for discovering the characteristics of the teacher’s habitus, for understanding the mechanisms of its functioning and for the effective design of educational activity.

This article seeks to understand why it is relatively easy for today’s individuals to acquire new behaviors, how the mechanism behind such acquisition developed, and how it is socially coordinated. Empirical findings reveal that new behaviors are mostly acquired unthinkingly. Hence, revisiting practice theory, I propose the concept of meta-habit to help us understand the blind and automatic acquisition of new behaviors. According to Pierre Bourdieu, habitus acquired primarily in childhood generates practices and contributes to the reproduction of the social order. Meta-habit includes disposal toward being open to situational context, toward inquisitiveness, and toward reading the external clues of behavior. Meta-habit generates practices on the basis of influences in the symbolic community: in this way practices are coordinated socially. Meta-habit is responsible for the reproduction of the social order in situations when the social space is very dynamic-this being the case of late modernity, which is a system comprising myriads of fields.

Opis:

The aim of the article is to examine the relationship between social class, gender, and aging. The author discusses the outcomes of existing quantitative research and a number of in-depth interviews conducted by the author in 2012 in Warsaw and two other cities in the Mazovia Province. In the course of the article the practices of elderly people will be presented successively in terms of class, gender, and seniority. The theoretical binder is provided by Bourdieu’s practice theory, in particular the concept of three class relational social structure, notions of habitus, forms of capital, and symbolic violence. The number of interviews is too small to draw general conclusions from, but is an exercise in sociological thinking about these three qualities in Bourdieu’s terms.
Artykuł prezentuje wyniki analizy ośmiu wywiadów pogłębionych przeprowadzonych w 2012 roku w Warszawie i w dwóch mniejszych miastach na Mazowszu. Celem wywiadów było prześledzenie relacji pomiędzy klasą społeczną, płcią kulturową i wiekiem. Te trzy jakości formują „węzeł gordyjski”, którego rozwiązanie nie jest możliwe bez poczynienia pewnych skrótów i uproszczeń. Dlatego praktyki starszych osób będą prezentowane sukcesywnie, jako formowane przez przynależność do określonej klasy, płci kulturowej oraz starszego wieku. Jednakże takie przedstawienie ma na celu jedynie uwypuklenie poszczególnych elementów doświadczenia, nie zakreślanie jego odrębnych sfer. Teoretyczną podstawę stanowią pojęcia wypracowane przez Bourdieu: klasy społecznej, habitusu, form kapitału oraz przemocy symbolicznej.

Recent research has reported that an increasing number of migrants in Norway are concentrated in the low-skilled sectors of the labour market, irrespective of their educational background, thus facilitating the formation of migrant niches in the long term. Despite the growing body of literature that raises the problem of downward professional mobility and deskilling among migrant populations, little scholarly attention has been paid to migrants’ struggles and vulnerabilities as a result of underemployment. Drawing on 30 in-depth interviews, this article explores the common experience of habitus mismatch and suffering among Poles who have worked below their level of competence or professional experience since migrating to Norway. By analysing subjective experiences of downward professional and social mobility and the conflict between valued and stigmatised identities, the article examines the various habitus mismatches that contribute to suffering in downwardly mobile Polish migrants.

The French term art brut (English - outsider art), meaning "raw art" or "rough art", is a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of mainstream culture. In the centre of our discussion is the category of the author (the creator) and the category of the fancier (the recipient loving art). These two categories were analysed by Alain Bouillet - a researcher of art brut of 30 years, who has accumulated an impressive collection of this kind of art. Pierre Bourdieu in Distinction (1979), argues that judgments of taste are related to social position. From time to time, the focus of the dominant class changes from education to experience. Especially today, the involvement in the creation process becomes more important. We have to introduce various issues in art in a different manner. What kind of experience the art opens us up to? It is largely contradictory to the educational experience.

The purpose of the article is an attempt to develop the primary habitus into the secondary in school environment, through the passage rituals (rites de passage) and related to them social drama (Social Drama). I assume that the school environment is normalized by institutionalized rituals in which the primary habitus is transformed into the secondary habitus through rituals. Its subjective consolidation and possible transformation is being done by education and upbringing. From the side of education, consolidation and transformation are complemented by school documentary and textual practices, and from the side of education by the moral ideal, conditioned by so-called the effect of reversing. All this process, hermeneutically and circularly complements the structure of the rite of passage.

The article analyses how crucial the Irish origin and long-term busking experience were in shaping the artistic habitus of Glen Hansard. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s terminology and Benedict Anderson’s characteristic of “imagined communities”, the author presents the variety of ways in which Hansard’s “habitus of the Irish busker” reveals itself. Seen from the perspective of the sociology of art, the artist’s statements, lyrics, music videos, projects and social initiatives reflect the point of view of a niche artist, strongly dissociating himself from the “entertainment” sector. They also show how grounded Hansard’s position in the artistic field was before his unexpected 2007 Oscar win for Best Original Song.

Prześledzenie filozoficznych źródeł i wczesnych zastosowań habitusu u Bourdieu – które wyjaśniały historyczne zerwania, spowodowane czy to wojną wyzwoleńczą w Algierii, czy to powojenną modernizacją francuskiej wsi – pozwala na skorygowanie czterech uporczywie powracających nieporozumień dotyczących tego pojęcia: (1) habitus nie jest nigdy repliką pojedynczej struktury społecznej, stanowi raczej, wielopoziomowy i dynamiczny zestaw schematów, który podlega „permanentnej rewizji” w praktyce; (2) habitus niekoniecznie jest koherentny i spójny, odznacza się raczej zróżnicowanymi poziomami integracji i napięcia; (3) ponieważ nie zawsze pozostaje w zgodności ze światem społecznym, w którym się rozwija, habitus jest tak samo odpowiedni do analizowania kryzysu i zmiany, jak do badań spójności i trwania; (4) nie jest samowystarczalnym mechanizmem generującym działanie: wnikliwa analiza dyspozycji musi więc przebiegać w ścisłym związku z odwzorowaniem całego systemu pozycji, które naprzemiennie pobudzają, tłumią bądź przekierowują skłonności podmiotu działającego. Co kluczowe, w ujęciu Bourdieu habitus nie jest abstrakcyjną koncepcją będącą wynikiem teoretycznych dywagacji i przeznaczoną dla tego typu rozważań; jest on przede wszystkim stenograficznym sposobem wyznaczającym postawę badawczą, który stawia w sercu analizy społecznej genetyczny sposób myślenia.
Retracing the philosophical origins and initial usage of habitus by Bourdieu to account for the historical disjuncture wrought by theAlgerianwar of national liberation and the postwar modernization of the French countryside allows us to clear up four recurrent misunderstandings about the concept: (1) habitus is never the replica of a single social structure but a dynamic, multiscalar, and multilayered set of schemata subject to ‘permanent revision’ in practice; (2) habitus is not necessarily coherent and unified but displays varying degrees of integration and tension; (3) because it is not always congruent with the cosmos in which it evolves, habitus is suited to analysing crisis and change no less than cohesion and perpetuation; but (4) it is not a self-sufficient mechanism for the generation of action: the dissection of dispositions must always proceed in close connection with the mapping of the system of positions that alternately excite, suppress, or redirect the socially constituted capacities and inclinations of the agent. Crucially, in Bourdieu’s hands, habitus is not an abstract concept issued from and aimed at theoretical disquisition, but a stenographic manner of designating a research posture that puts the genetic mode of thinking at the heart of social analysis.

Opis:

The purpose of this article is to present a theory of habitus in the philosophy of Aristotle and his medieval commentators. The first part of the article – which is the introduction to the problems of habitus – displays Aristotelian account. In the second part I present the development of this concept in the thirteenth century followers of Aristotle, i.e. Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas. The third part is devoted to the discussion of late medieval modification of the Aristotelian theory in account of Gerald Odonis, John Duns Scotus, John Buridan and Paul of Worczyn.

This article considers upward mobility of UK Polish migrant workers by introducing a Bourdieusian habitus perspective. Drawing mainly on the interview data it was inquired whether the intelligentsia habitus understood as an example of embodied or learned “social expectations” concerning the position in the social hierarchy provides Polish migrants the motivational scripts for learning and innovating in the labour market. It was found that the intelligentsia habitus can legitimize successful jobs seeking strategies of some respondents. However, this paper also notes that a significant number of analysed respondents were unable to mobilize cultural capital resources and remained in a vicious circle of long hours of monotonous factory work that has created an additional constraint complicating their learning capabilities.

This article concerns the question of how marginalized individuals at the doorway to the art field manage their position of uncertainty, what Bourdieu calls a “cleft habitus,” and in some cases challenge the repressive norms. Bourdieu’s perspective on how historical crisis prompts change at the macro level is used to view how “micro crises” in the lives of individuals leads to resistance against normative requirements. The article suggests that within situations of micro crises individuals assume three strategies to handle the contradictions they are faced with: 1) expand upon their cultural capital (these resources can then be used in opposition to the institution of the field within which they were accumulated in the first place); 2) move to an alternative scene and audience; or 3) create a new or emergent future horizon through which they can reinterpret their past and present situation.

The author considers Pierre Bourdieu’s conceptual formula where [(habitus) (capital)] + field = practice and brings it to the field of international migration. She proves that a complete, cohesive application of Bourdieu’s theory in migration studies has much greater heuristic potential than the use of isolated individual concepts—it enables a new view of the social world where international migration constitutes an inherent part. It aims at explaining such phenomena as transnational habitus, forms of capital in migration process, migratory field, and transnational practices.

The volume constitutes a summary of the First Congress of Polish Museologists (the Congress) which was held in Łódź on 23–25 April 2015. The Congress aimed at raising key issues for Polish museology, on one hand reflecting on its essence and functions, and on the other trying to indicate particular solutions in order to fix the museum system. The publication includes conference papers, minutes of plenary sessions, as well as resolutions adopted during the Congress. The whole was complemented with an index of persons and numerous photographs. While trying to focus on some of the main subjects in the programme of the Congress (and thus, of the book), it is impossible to forget that the change in the law regarding museums should be preceded by a comprehensive discussion on the professional identity of museum professionals, and on the condition of the institutions where they work. We should therefore devise an actual museum habitus, not avoiding key questions such as who should be considered as a museum professional and which unique features make an object become a museum exhibit. The need for discussion and to specify the terms we use was mentioned by many participants in the meeting in Łódź, including outside experts. Museums are specific institutions whose sense of existence, as well as an important feature of their activity, is social service understood as the dissemination of knowledge. The decisions jointly taken during the Congress will facilitate our reform of our institutions’ internal organisation. They will also enable us to build ties with organisers of museum institutions aiming at maintaining such museums’ autonomy, so they can fully achieve their mission.

Odnosząc się do polskiej regionalizacji z perspektywy integracji europejskiej i globalizacji, artykuł proponuje model analizy regionu oparty na myśli teoretycznej Pierre'a Bourdieu i Anssi Paasiego. Kluczowe kategorie modelu to region jako pole społeczne nowej generacji, wytwarzany w jego obrębie habitus regionalny oraz imago regionis nowa forma tożsamości regionalnej. Główny proces analizowany za pośrednictwem modelu to wielofazowa instytucjonalizacja regionu, w wyniku której zyskuje on swoistą tożsamość. Tożsamość ta funkcjonuje z jednej strony w wymiarze marketingu terytorialnego, z drugiej zaś wchodzi w interakcję ze wzorami mentalnymi i behawioralnymi w ramach regionalnego habitusu, warunkując potencjał adaptacyjny i innowacyjny regionalnej społeczności. Proponowane podejście z jednej strony pozwala ujmować region w perspektywie zmiany globalnej, z drugiej zaś strony zwraca uwagę na możliwość lokalnej modyfikacji warunków, w których się ona dokonuje. Podtrzymując znaczenie czynników społeczno-kulturowych w analizie regionu, jednocześnie umożliwia wyjście poza wąsko pojętą perspektywę tożsamości kulturowej, która dominuje w socjologicznie zorientowanych badaniach nad regionami.
Referring to the Polish regionalization from the perspective of European integration and globalization, the paper proposes a model of regional analysis based on theoretical conceptions of Pierre Bourdieu and Anssi Paasi. Region as a social field of new generation, regional habitus constructed within it and an imago regionis as a new type of regional identity are the key concepts of the proposed model. Multi-stage institutionalization of region, which results in an idiosyncratic regional identity, is the main process analysed by means of the model. The identity functions on the one hand at the level of territorial marketing, on the other it interacts with mental and behavioural patterns constitutive of regional habitus, conditioning adaptive and innovative potential of regional communities. The proposed approach enables to see region in the perspective of global change on the one hand, while on the other, it draws attention to possibilities of local modification of the conditions, within which it is implemented. While it sustains the weight of socio-cultural factors in regional analyses, at the same time it makes it possible to reach beyond narrowly conceived perspective of cultural identity, dominant in sociologically minded studies of regions.

This article situates the experiences of having penile implant surgery between medical interventions and privately understood meanings and practices. Using my own experiences, supplemented with information from online sources, I document the changes that occur in the meanings and the practices that implant surgery enables. My analysis derives from the concepts of habitus and the looking glass body, and it begins with a diagnosis of impotence and moves through the various considerations that lead to surgery and its aftermaths. I suggest that understanding how medical technology interacts with everyday meanings contributes to a wider application of the concept of habitus while expanding a symbolic interactionist perspective of the body.

Olga Załęska analyses the content of Barbara Hoff ’s articles in the “Fashion” column in the weekly “Przekrój” in the years 1954–1969. Załęska conducted her research by taking into account the cultural, social and political context of the Polish People’s Republic, and primarily focusing on its unofficial class structure. Załęska argues that Hoff ’s publications had a significant symbolic meaning as tools of class struggle and of opposition to the ruling political power. Thus, they corresponded with the attitude of he intelligentsia whom this weekly brought closer together (as in the case of Leopold Tyrmand). In the “Fashion” column we can detect elements of the bourgeois habitus, which Hoff propagated among readers representing various social classes. Załęska analyses class aspects of Barbara Hoff 's educational message. Later statements by Hoff and members of the intelligentsia revolving around “Przekrój” ascribe a subversive potential to fashion as a way to resist the socialist system. Załęska explores this thesis, its defense made plausible by the assumption that the “resistance against the ruling power” is understood as a struggle with that power’s aesthetic and cultural aspect.

The problem of rules in Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practiceThe text constitutes a thorough and exhaustive analysis of the impact of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s philosophy on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice and especially on his notions of practical sense and logic of practice. Opis:

The article deals with the "habitus of dacha" in Elena Chizhova's novel The Mushroom Planet. Its bearers are characters whose personality was formed at a certain time under the influence of culture and actions associated with the Soviet dacha. "Habitus of dacha" in the work refers to two different historical periods: Soviet and post-Soviet. Its versions are used by Chizhova to reflect the most important problems and transformations in modern Russia. The image of the Soviet dacha, being a metaphor for life in the USSR, is gloomy and pessimistic, which is not typical of memories of childhood and youth. The post-Soviet dacha is a phenomenon that represents the economic and social processes of the transition to capitalism and the rejection of the legacy of socialism. An analysis of the novel The Mushroom Planet leads to the conclusion, that Chizhova's characters represent different ways of adapting to new economic and social conditions. The author gives her forecast for the future, leaving alive the character who is unable to get out of the "Sovietness".
Artykuł traktuje o „habitusie daczy” w powieści Eleny Czyżowej Planeta grzybów. Jego nosicielami są bohaterowie, których osobowość ukształtowała się w określonym czasie pod wpływem kultury i działań związanych z sowiecką daczą.  „Habitus daczy” w utworze odnosi się do dwóch różnych okresów historycznych (sowieckiego i postsowieckiego) i jednocześnie do dwóch pokoleń. Jego warianty i modyfikacje służą Czyżowej do odzwierciedlenia najważniejszych problemów i przemian we współczesnej Rosji. Obraz sowieckiej daczy, będący metaforą życia w ZSRR, jest ponury i pesymistyczny, co nie jest typowe dla wspomnień z dzieciństwa i młodości. Z kolei postsowiecka dacza to zjawisko reprezentujące procesy gospodarcze i społeczne w okresie przejścia do kapitalizmu i odrzucenie spuścizny socjalizmu. Analiza powieści Planeta grzybów prowadzi do wniosku, że bohaterowie Czyżowej reprezentują różne formy przystosowania się do nowych warunków ekonomicznych i społecznych, ale przy życiu pozostaje tylko człowiek, który nie jest w stanie wydostać się z „sowieckości”.
В статье рассматривается «дачный габитус» в романе Елены Чижовой Планета грибов. Его носителями являются герои, личность которых сформировалась в определенное время под влиянием культуры и действий, связанных с советской дачей. «Дачный габитус» относится в произведении к двум разным историческим периодам: советскому и постсоветскому. Его изменения используются Чижовой для отражения важнейших проблем и трансформаций в современной России. Образ советской дачи, будучи метафорой жизни в СССР, мрачен и пессимистичен, что не свойственно воспоминаниям о детстве и юношестве. В свою очередь постсоветская дача – это явление, представляющее экономические и социальные процессы перехода к капитализму и отказ от наследия социализма. Анализ романа Планета грибов приводит к выводу, что герои Чижовой представляют разные способы приспособления к новым экономическим и социальным условиям. Автор дает свой прогноз на будущее, оставляя в живых героя, не способоного выйти из «советскости».

Most of sciences can be traced back to Aristotle. This is because in opposition to Plato he was able to find a way in which one could give a scientific form to reflection concerning contingent facts of every-day life. Knowledge of the contingent was made possible thanks to the Aristotelian concepts of category and state (habitus). It is the latter concept that was especially important for forming knowledge about change. Aristotle and his medieval followers apply it in analyses of various processes, from local motion to changes in temperaments, to formation of virtues.

Artykuł ukazuje możliwości wykorzystania dorobku teoretycznego Pierre’a Bourdieu na gruncie mocnego programu Jeffrey’a C. Alexandra. Rozwiązanie problemu redukcjonizmu możliwe jest dzięki reinterpretacji kluczowych pojęć Bourdieu w duchu semiotyki kultury Jurija Łotmana. Łotmanowskie rozumienie kultury, uwzględniające reprodukcję i kreację, pozwala wyjaśnić nie tylko, w jaki sposób struktury wpływają na jednostki, ale również w jaki sposób jednostki posługują się nimi.
The article shows the possibilities of using Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical achievements on the basis of Jeffrey C. Alexander’s strong program. It is possible to solve the problem of reductionism by reinterpreting Bourdieu’s key concepts in through the lenses of Yuri Lotman’s semiotic theory of culture. Lotman’s understanding of culture, including the reproduction and creation, allows to explain not only how structures affect individuals, but also how individuals use structures.

This article is based on data collected during a qualitative survey on children's leisure practices and family socialisation patterns. The paper focuses more specifically on the cross effects of gender and social class on the construction of body hexis and relationship to sports. The results show that several dimensions of family habitus must be taken into account: lifestyles, way in which parents divide the tasks of raising children and relationship they have with social competition or gender norms. Moreover, taking these different dimensions into account must be accompanied by an analysis of the concrete modes of socialization within the family and the practice context.

Text is conceived on the model of the puzzle, because as in the time of their first laying each element should be turned face-up and properly perceive it to fit into a whole, so each term of the Bourdieu’s social theory will first be discussed separately and then complete into a larger whole through issues related to the treatment of people with autism. This article is an attempt to reinterpret the category of symbolic violence in relation to the rehabilitation of autistic people, theoretical proposition in the study of this process.

Opis:

Due to the scientific paradigm of art history, this article was intended to be of interdisciplinary character. I used selected tools of the following related fields of science: philosophy, social psychology, political science, cultural anthropology that I adopted either when visiting numerous museums in Poland and abroad or when analyzing the institution where I have been working since 2000 (with 4 years break). I tried though to maintain an independent status of a theoretician and practician at the same time. Beginning with the new distinction between sociotechnical and social museums, I present the biggest challenges of our time. I point out the notions, which are constantly changing due to the dynamics of the culture: art, science and politics, which are being deformed in practice and – notwithstanding the theory – are present in popular opinion. In the description I deliberately use the language of metaphors of culture, as this refers to certain areas of our collective self-consciousness with moderate exposition of scientific apparatus. In particular, reference has been made to scientific authority of Hannah Arendt and Pierre Bourdieu. As far as the area of social life is concerned, I analyzed both museums and behavior of museum experts – which in my opinion are all museum employees. Final remarks highlight the importance of responsibility for a picture and a word in the culture, the power of thinking, imagination and sensitivity constituting the credo of violence-free museums idea that I have created.
Artykuł ma charakter z założenia interdyscyplinarny, co jest związane z naukowym paradygmatem historii sztuki. Wykorzystuję w nim wybrane narzędzia zaprzyjaźnionych nauk: filozofii, socjolopsychologii, politologii, antropologii kulturowej, które przyswajałam sobie przyglądając się setkom muzeów odwiedzanych w kraju i za granicą, a jednocześnie od środka własnej instytucji, w której pracuję od 2000 (z 4 letnią przerwą), starając się, na ile to możliwe, zachować niezależny status teoretyka i praktyka zarazem. Zaczynając od nowego kryterium podziału muzeów na socjotechniczne i społeczne szkicuję najtrudniejsze wyzwania współczesności. Wskazuję na podlegające dynamice kultury, zmienne w czasie znaczenia tytułowych pojęć: sztuka, nauka i polityka, które ulegając deformacji w praktyce niezależnie od teorii funkcjonują w opinii potocznej. W opisie celowo używam języka metafor naszej kultury, który pozwala odesłać do określonych obszarów naszej zbiorowej samoświadomości, z zachowaniem umiaru w zakresie eksponowania aparatury naukowej; odwołuję się głównie do autorytetu naukowego Hannah Arendt i Pierre’a Bourdieu. Od polityki przechodzę do życia społecznego, lokalizując w nim muzea oraz przyglądając się zasadom funkcjonowania społeczności muzealników, czyli w moim odczuciu wszystkich zatrudnionych w muzeach pracowników. Uwagi końcowe podkreślają znaczenie odpowiedzialności za obraz i słowo w kulturze, wagę myślenia, wyobraźni i wrażliwości jako credo sformułowanej przeze mnie idei muzeum bez przemocy.

The articles justifies the need for constant care for the axiological dimension of education. The habitus of the modern teacher was analyzed in the perspective of axiological dispositions. The author’s reconstructions of the respondents’ views concerning their preferences regarding observable and repetitive teachers’ behavior were categorized. These behaviors were indicators of the values which guided teachers in their work with students. An attempt was made to determine which axiological properties of teachers, expressed in the praxiological dimension, are particularly valued by today’s youth. Analysis of the frequency of indications of the preferred teachers’ behaviors helped to establish the hierarchy of these properties. The results of the diagnosis carried out on a sample of 903 respondents showed that teachers’ pedagogical tactfulness, subject knowledge and good organization of work are mostly appreciated and expected by young people. In addition, attempts were made to identify differences in the respondents’ preferences due to their interest profile, expressed in the choice of a specific field of academic studies. It has been established that it is the factor which differentiates students’ preferences in relation to the teacher’s axiological attributes. Significant relationships have been observed and the conclusions made valuable implications for pedeutology.

The article focuses on the analysis of women’s and men’s clothing appearances in the pre-bo-urgeois ambience of Kersnik’s novels. Particular clothing items and clothing appearances indicate the presence of specifi c spiritual and social characteristics, typical for the cultural and historical environment in which the two literary works were created. The methodological approach of the analysis in terms of theory is based on general semiotic theory (Eco, Lotman), cultural semiotics (Barthes), literary theory and literary history, Lotman’s symbol theory, clothing culture, discourse analysis and Bourdieu’s theory of habitus. The article discusses separately the clothing appearan-ces of male and female characters. The descriptions of clothing appearances reveal the socio-histo-rical background of the literary works as well as many other abstract categories such as characters’ mental states, their ideologies, political beliefs, positive and negative character attributes as well as their moral virtues and vices. Clothes as part of the pre-bourgeois habitus try to establish a balance between the urban and the rural, between prestige and humility, between refi nement and coar-seness. Irony is often a result of the contrast between the physical determinants and the associate variable, i.e. the clothing. The author uses a range of various clothing appearances to characterize and mock different classes of people; the trivial conversations about fashion denote the banality of social life; the differences between the “true” bourgeoisie and those who strive to reach and fi t into that social class are already strongly indicated in the descriptions of their external appearances.

Social construction of the body and the performative magic: Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological theory in performance studiesPerformance studies are a developing field of social science which draws on the insights of sociology, ethnography, cultural studies, cultural anthropology, theatre studies and communication studies. The object of performance studies is human activity seen as expression which constitutes the process of production and reproduction of subjectivity. The article presents an interpretation of “school” scenes from Gombrowicz’s Ferdydurke which was inspired by Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological method. The use of concepts such as ‘habitus’, ‘reproduction’, and ‘pedagogical authority’ allows one to see not only a satire on didactic ineptitude, but also a thorough and acute analysis of the functioning of the school as an institution in these scenes. From this perspective, the key function of school is not to teach, but to reproduce the structure of the social order and implement performative pedagogy which shapes this community’s members.

The paper is a work in progress investigating the perceptions of Standard English expressed by a group of children in their last year of primary school in a multicultural and multilingual educational setting in London. The theoretical framework employed to interpret the data, a series of group interviews with small groups, is that of language ideology. The idea brought forward in the paper is that language ideology is a habitus (Bourdieu, 1991) which attaches certain values to the prestige variety of a language, while devaluing non-standard varieties. Through the adoption of this theoretical lens, the paper attempts to evaluate the educational implications of this ideology.

This text discusses the formation of Slovenian local elites in Trieste in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A significant part of the analysis presented here concerns the habitus of the elite and the attitudes expressed through the significance they attached to being members of the elite. Drawing on the discourses presented in the Slovenian and Croatian press published in Trieste, as well as biographical sources, this article outlines the vision of society held by the political leaders of the local community. It emphasises how the elites gave expression to their habitus in the public sphere through a variety of institutional activities. I argue that the life of the Slovenian politician and social activist Ivan Nabergoj, a figure central to this text, constitutes an ideal-type committed biography. In conclusion, I address the relationship between the elites and the surrounding community, arguing that elites were representatives of the community while also determining the forms of group belonging by their shaping of mechanisms of consolidation. In this article, I also consider the particularities of the political conditions of Slovenians living in the Slavic-Italian borderlands.

Opis:

The study examined two types of parenting and their relationships with the parents’ involvement in the education of their children. A small-scale study1 of one classroom at a urban public school in the Czech Republic suggests that children from families with different backgrounds and different attained education perceive distinct types of parental upbringing styles in relation to their education achievement: the article discusses helicopter and submarine parenting. The main interest is dedicated to helicopter and submarine parenting in their weak and contradictory forms since the research revealed these two forms to be the most prevalent in the studied classroom. As the research data indicates, these two parental models are associated with specific dimensions of emotional capital. The survey revealed that the children of helicopter parents clearly benefit from parental involvement since their parents effectively transform their emotional capital into cultural capital.

This paper identifies the most significant patterns of educational experience among members of the interwar Polish communist movement. The first part of the article covers the experiences that communists shared with other representatives of the social strata from which they originated: the reproduction of the social structure or their overcoming of it in the form of social advancement. It also discusses the importance of educational barriers and opportunities as factors facilitating the emergence of attitudes of radical contestation of the socio-political order. The second part identifies educational experiences that were directly related to involvement in an illegal, subversive and repressed political current, and the diverse, sometimes paradoxical consequences of that involvement for representatives of different social strata. It traces the transformations of the communist habitus and proposes the concept of ‘clandestine white-collar workers’. The article concludes that there were two patterns in the pursuit of education among the communists: acquiring a degree in revolution or for the sake of the revolution.

Aim: The article focuses on the relation between the Prix Goncourt and the field of education, on the example of the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens, a type of little Prix Goncourt awarded by high school students. Methods: The departure point is to define the Prix Goncourt as an institution. According to the author’s definition it generates its own discourse, is a source of culturally and socially significant symbolic violence and finally has power. The author mentions three dimensions of power: literary, economic and social. The analysis of the relation under consideration is presented through the prism of Bourdieu’s theory and embedded in the Critical Discourse Analysis perspective. This method allows one to better comprehend the functioning of modern society, power relations within the fields and across the fields, as well as what is at stake in this social game. Results and conclusions: The Prix Goncourt interferes in the field of education to maintain its power: to ensure the readers, to confirm the adequacy of some postures, finally to justify its existence. Prix Goncourt des Lycéens seems to be a perfect tool by which the Prix Goncourt can achieve its purpose. However, we observe a correlation – the Prix Goncourt has an impact on the field of education but, at the same time, it depends on the French educational system. This system creates some cultural needs such as, for example, taking part in literary life. Last, but not least, the Prix Goncourt has to fight continuously for its high position in the field. Originality of subject: Even though in Poland the problem of literary awards has been already described, no one published a wide analyse of the Prix Goncourt or the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens. This article not only describes a literary phenomenon but also puts it in the complicated context of modern society.
Cel badań: Artykuł skupia się na relacji Nagrody Goncourtów z polem edukacji na przykładzie Prix Goncourt des lycéens przyznawanej przez licealistów. Metoda badań: Punktem wyjścia do rozważań jest zdefiniowanie Nagrody Goncourtów jako instytucji. Zgodnie z przyjętą definicją instytucja będzie wytwarzać własny dyskurs, wywierać znaczącą społecznie i kulturowo przemoc symboliczną, a więc ostatecznie sprawować władzę. Autorka dzieli tę władzę na: literacką, ekonomiczną, społeczną. Analiza prowadzona jest przez pryzmat teorii Pierre’a Bourdieu i utrzymana w nurcie critical discourse analysis. Pozwala to wydobyć niektóre mechanizmy działania współczesnego społeczeństwa i podkreślić rodzaj stawek w społecznej grze. Wyniki i wnioski: Nagroda Goncourtów ingeruje w pole edukacji, aby utrzymać władzę: zagwarantować sobie odbiorców, potwierdzić sensowność określonych postaw, a tym samym uzasadnić niezbędność własnego istnienia. Prix Goncourt des lycéens jest do tego doskonałym narzędziem. Mamy jednak do czynienia ze współzależnością. Nagroda Goncourtów wpływa na pole edukacji, ale też sama jest od niego zależna – to francuski system oświaty kreuje potrzeby kulturowe, dzięki którym jednostki dostrzegają sens m.in. w braniu aktywnego udziału w szeroko pojętym życiu literackim. Ostatecznie też władza symboliczna nigdy nie jest dana raz na zawsze. Nagroda Goncourtów musi nieustannie walczyć o utrzymanie wysokiej pozycji w polu. Oryginalność podejścia: Chociaż temat nagród literackich jest obecny na gruncie polskim, nie powstała do tej pory żadna publikacja dokładniej analizująca Nagrodę Goncourtów, a tym bardziej Prix Goncourt des lycéens. Niniejsza praca nie tylko opisuje konkretne zjawisko literackie, ale też umieszcza je w szerszym kontekście, wikłając w mechanizmy nowoczesnego społeczeństwa.

Opis:

This article focuses on human rights – a central topic in Bob Dylan’s works since the beginning of his career. Analysing a selection of texts in which this winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature refers to the situation of black Americans, the author tries to capture and define Dylan’s recurring narrative regarding the responsibility of individuals, structures and institutions, and their mutual relationships. The analysis focuses on the motif of accusation: who and what is it addressed to? In his discussion of Dylan’s narrative, the author refers to the concept of habitus proposed by Pierre Bourdieu. It is defined as a set of rules incorporated by an individual from the environment and later applied in individual attitudes and actions. Based on the analysis of Dylan’s most important works on human rights, the article shows that the American artist’s perception of the scope of individual and structural responsibility is similar to the concept described by Bourdieu, and as such belongs within a specific borderline sphere.

Opis:

Aim. Based on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of education and theory of postcolonialism, to explain how the teacher’s position changes in the processes of cultural transmission to their pupils. Concepts. Bourdieu states that the purpose of a school is to reproduce power relations. Teachers, using their authority, implement a culture that supports the position of the dominant class. However, various new studies show a decline in teacher’s authority. The rupture of hierarchical connections in the process of culture imposition is being studied in postcolonialism. By applying the ideas of Homi K. Bhabha, the modern teacher activity can be explained not as a cultural reproduction but as a teacher’s constant encounters with the culture of the Other. A space where cultural encounters take place, Bhabha names the Third Space. Here, a new hybrid culture emerges, and a school becomes open to otherness and diversity. Results. In contemporary society, teachers do not have enough authority to impose a cultural reproduction. Teachers are forced to choose resistance to their culture by encountering pupils and collaborating with their pupils’ culture. As a result, a hybrid culture emerges, and the Third Space forms in schools. Conclusion. Contemporary education is heavily influenced by societal changes, which are shaping new conditions at schools and different perceptions of teachers’ work. Previous theories of the sociology of education provide only a limited explanation of these processes. By expanding these theories with theories from the field of culture, we broaden our understanding and ability to explain the processes in today’s classrooms. However, such a theoretical approach should be validated by empirical studies in the future. Originality. By applying the postcolonialism theory to explain the process of cultural formation in schools between the teachers and their pupils.

Proces kształtowania się męskiego habitusu rodzajowego rozpoczyna się w chwili narodzin osobnika płci męskiej i trwa przez całe jego życie. Bardzo duży wpływ na postać oraz wymiar tej kategorii ma zespół praktyk komunikacyjnych produkowanych, a przede wszystkim reprodukowanych w klasie szkolnej. Język, akty performatywne oraz sposób użycia języka niosą ładunek emocjonalności, skojarzeń spowitych stereotypami, a także wskazują pozycję chłopca (ucznia) wraz z jego intelektualnymi i pozaintelektualnym „parametrami” w polu szkoły. Funkcjonuje ona jako swoista fabryka męskiego habitusu, w której głównym narzędziem jest język, a sama męskość w założeniach jest produktem mającym stanowić system dyspozycji do działania praktycznego, który wzmacnia trwanie „oczywistości społecznych”. To, co implikują urzeczywistniające się w klasie szkolnej akty performatywne, to nie przypuszczenia czy filozoficzne spekulacje, lecz czytelny oraz przez „wielu” i „wiele” doświadczany fakt społeczny. Męskość, jako złożona oraz wzbogacona różnorodnością kategoria, osadzona jest na sposobie użycia języka oraz myślenia o męskości, kobiecości i praktykach komunikacyjnych. Badania własne i ich analiza dowodzą, iż granice języka uczniów, przyszłych mężczyzn, wyznaczają granice ich męskiego habitusu.
This article has explored and examined the ways of using the classroom language in primary school by Ethnography of communication (EC) and Critical discourse analysis (CDA). The classroom is a setting in which schoolboys and their social position are located. Causal force of the discursive space seems to be extremely effective in delimitation and incarceration of the mind. The position of every particular schoolboy (and schoolgirl) in this field is a result of the interaction between the specific rules of the field, language, interpretation and illusion. Masculine habitus is created not only by the way of using language and a spectrum of performative acts but also through the knowledge construction process during the learning practice. School is a special place where masculine habitus is produced and reproduced, day by day, according to the logic of the classroom field.

Jeden z fundamentalnych sporów na temat natury rzeczywistości spo- łecznej stanowi debata, którą najczęściej określa się współcześnie mianem agency and structure (sprawstwo podmiotowe a struktura). Pierre Bourdieu próbował prze- zwyciężyć tę klasyczną opozycję („konstruktywistyczny strukturalizm”) i w efekcie stworzył bardzo ciekawą i oryginalną teorię pola społecznego. Jego koncepcja stała się dla mnie inspiracją do myślenia o praktyce poradniczej właśnie w kategoriach pola. W artykule przywołuję argumenty i racje na rzecz aplikacji oraz uprawomoc- nienia teorii tego wybitnego socjologa na gruncie poradoznawstwa. Z racji objętości tekstu czynię to tutaj jedynie w sposób uproszczony. Jest to zaledwie wstępna próba przedstawienia praktyki poradniczej jako fenomenu działania pola.
One of the fundamental disagreements about the nature of social reality is a debate which is commonly referred to nowadays as agency and structure. Pierre Bourdieu attempted to overcome this classical opposition (“constructivist structu- ralism”) and as a result has created a very interesting and original theory of the social field. His concept became an inspiration for me to think about the counselling practice just in terms of the field. In the article I rehearse the eminent sociologist’s major concepts and provide arguments for applicability of his theory as a legitimate framework for counsellogy. Given the limits of my paper, this account is here so- mewhat simplified. It is just a preliminary attempt to present the counselling practice as the phenomenon of field operation

Opis:

This article looks at hospitality practices in the process of recreating and modifying social structure. The author seeks the general regularities and behavioral patterns that appear when people visit others and are visited, as well as how they speak of these visits, or, in Pierre Bourdieu’s language, the principles that organize practices that are part of the class habitus. For the purposes of the analysis, two comparative groups were selected: people with the highest and lowest levels of economic, social, and cultural capital. The analysis allowed several conclusions to be drawn. First, in addition to the class factor, the age or generational factor should be taken into account as it has proven to be relevant in terms of the diversity of practices. Second, the research showed that several of the practices studied were not differentiated between the groups; they turned out to be intense in the case of people with high and low levels of capital. Such patterns involved informality and freedom, the striving for agreement and group solidarity, and an aversion to aesthetics and decoration. Third, there were sometimes differentiating nuances – the general principle could be the same, but the justification or motivation behind it was different. For people with a high level of both types of capital, naturalness/honesty was an important justification and was contrasted to  falsehood, artificiality, and pretentiousness. This justification seemed to be a meta-principle that permeated many other patterns of behavior.

Opis:

Three collections of photographs depicting ethnographical research are subject of analysis. The author uses them to show differences between local and foreign patterns of working in the field. The significant role of wandering is stressed as a unique property of ethnographers’ work. Another factor strongly influencing this professional group’s habitus is class distinction, typical for bourgeois circles. It is said to affect the way the subjects of research are usually treated. Also, the author muses over the relationship of photography as a medium and a peculiar act of collecting and gathering, so typical for ethnography.

Opis:

The paper is devoted to the analysis of the conventionalized representational practices being used to represent the poverty problem and the economically marginalized citizens in the information and entertainment media in Poland. The conventionalization as the phenomenon typical for the information formats may impede the empathy, nevertheless, it does not make it impossible. The attitude of entertainment media to the poverty, though, is much more problematic, as they define the underclass in their own, specific way, while providing the readers and the viewers with the voyeuristic pleasures of watching its members struggle to alter their economic status.
