Opis:

This paper examines the evaluative features of the shi- nominal prefix in Lamnsoꞌ. The paper takes advantage of the literature on shi- as the noun class marker for Class 19 nouns in Lamnsoꞌ to introduce it as a diminutive prefi x with the general semantic interpretation of ‘small’/’little’ (for the same language). The shi- prefix is identified here as a polysemous category with varying semantic values. The paper reveals that the shi- diminutive introduces pragmatic features yet unstudied for languages like Lamnsoꞌ. When the shi- prefix combines with the phonological process of reduplication, the limitative rather than the multiplicative interpretation is derived. Shi- combines with adjectives to introduce scales of the properties denoted by the adjective. The paper claims that the study of evaluative diminutives across language groups has the potential of revealing affixed valued features that bring to bear the linguistic significance of size and the pragmatics of evaluation.

The presented study investigates attitude change using a cross-modal evaluative conditioning (EC) paradigm. EC is a change in evaluative responses towards initially neutral stimulus (CS) due to its repeated pairing with affectively valenced stimulus (US). A positive scent of instant chocolate (US+) was used together with pictures of homeless people (US-) to change affective responses towards neutral names (CS). We show that a classic EC effect, i.e. more negative CS evaluations after its pairing with negative images of the homeless, can be eliminated when a competitive US, i.e. a positive chocolate scent, is present in the environment. Additionally, the study demonstrates chocolate scent selectively increased attitude towards homeless as measured by perceived distance to self and a self-report questionnaire. Moreover, this effect was not mediated by mood changes. We argue that scents can be used to change attitudes towards stigmatized groups.

Opis:

The author of the paper deals with evaluative adjectives used on press advertising. The researched lexemes were excerpted from Russian women’s magazines, published in 2010–2013. The main purpose of this article was to classify selected lexicon by few criteria, such as, semantic meaning, frequency of their usage and morphological and syntactical methods of valuation. Research has shown that verbal valuation in advertising, which is a result of language manipulation, guaranties commercial success for communicant.

Artykuł ten jest propozycją uporządkowania nie dość konsekwentnego podziału podgrupy przysłówków zdaniowych określanych jako przysłówki oceniające. Propozycja ta polega przede wszystkim na oddzieleniu przysłówków oceniających w ścisłym sensie, czyli takich, które odwołują się do kategorii aksjologicznych od innych typów przysłówków oceniających. Wśród tych ostatnich można wyróżnić 1. przysłówki epistemiczne, za pomocą których mówiący dokonuje oceny prawdziwości propozycji (certe, certo, plane, profecto, sane, vero, vere, fortasse, forsitan), 2. przysłówki ewidencjalne, które wskazują, na jakiej podstawie mówiący wypowiada jakieś informacje (scilicet, videlicet) oraz 3. przysłówki miratywne, poprzez które mówiący daje wyraz zaskoczeniu, że dany stan rzeczy ma miejsce (inopinanter, inopinate, inopinato, necopinato). Wśród 4. przysłówków oceniających w ścisłym sensie można natomiast wyróżnić cztery podgrupy: a. ogólnie wartościujące (bene, male), b. odwołujące się do wartości poznawczych (sapienter, stulte, imprudenter, inepte, recte, falso), c. odwołujące się do wartości utylitarnych (opportune, feliciter, (per)commode incommode, perincommode) i d. odwołujące się do wartości moralnych (recte, falso, merito, iure, iniuria). W propozycji tej najbardziej dyskusyjne jest uznanie przysłówków wyrażających zaskoczenie za wykładniki miratywności, jako że jest to kategoria językowa dostrzeżona stosunkowo niedawno i nie dość dobrze rozpoznana.
The article suggests ordering the division of the sub-group of sentential adverbs, defined as evaluative adverbs, that is not consistent enough. The suggestion consists first of all in separating evaluative adverbs in the strict sense, that is ones referring to axiological categories, from other types of evaluative adverbs. Among the latter the following ones may be distinguished: 1. Epistemic adverbs, with the help of which the speaker evaluates the truth of the proposition (certe, certo, plane, profecto, sane, vero, vere, fortasse, forsitan), 2. evidential adverbs that point the basis on which the speaker gives some information (scilicet, videlicet), and 3. mirative adverbs, with which the speaker expresses his surprise that the given state of affairs does occur (inopinanter, inopinate, inopinato, necopinato). Among 4.the evaluative adverbs in the strict sense, in turn, four sub-groups may be distinguished: a. generally evaluating (bene, male), b. referring to cognitive values (sapientier, stulte, imprudenter, inepte, recte, falso), c. referring to utilitarian values (opportune, feliciter, (per)commode incommode, perincommode), and d. referring to moral values (recte, falso, merito, iure, iniuria). In the suggestion, recognizing the adverbs expressing surprise as the marker of mirativity is the most arguable point, as it is a language category that has been noticed relatively recently and has not been yet well recognized.

Ethnomethodologists have emphasized the pragmatic and contextual nature of description as a variety of social practice, and have suggested the ramifications of this insight for the methodology and philosophy of the social sciences. However, ethnomethodologists have thereby invited difficult questions about the moral and analytic status of their own descriptions. Drawing on Atkinson’s study of suicide verdicts and Coulter’s writings on schizophrenia, ethnomethodological scholarship is shown to display the possibility and promise of disinterested description, even when the subject matter involves the evaluation of problematic actions and identities. The combination of Wittgensteinian logical grammar and empirical studies of natural language use, suggested by Coulter, is presented as especially relevant and remarkable for purposes of studying social practices including describing, naming, categorizing, classifying, labeling, diagnosing, reaching a verdict, and kindred practices of language use conceived as varieties of practical action.

Opis:

In this paper, stressing the importance of positive acts evaluating a partner in communication process, the authors tried to identify the guidelines for its formulation. Acts of this kind are deprived of humiliation which fosters interpersonal relationships The authors begin their considerations showing the importance of social skills and the role of correct formulation of messages. Based on the analysis of the literature on the subject, as well as using practical examples, the authors reviewed the fundamental errors in the design of communication during the exchange of messages. They identified two basic (vertical and horizontal) types and gave their examples. These errors can lead to diminish the participation of communication process (in particular this of depreciation acts). The appearance of those errors (by diminishing the interlocutor) may result in the inhibition of not only the communication process, but the worsening of the relationship. Considering the structure of communication the authors proposed the construction of formulating the message that favored interpersonal relationships understanding and supporting.

The article discusses the evaluative and vague characteristics used in the descriptions of the various types of offences in the context of the nullum crimen sine lege certa principle. The analysis of these characteristics was conducted on the grounds of the provisions of the Act on Preventing Drug Addiction in terms of the so-called allowable span and freedom of decision left for the authorities applying the law. The results of this analysis indicate that often enough the use by the legislature of the evaluative characteristics strains the principle of nullum crimen sine lege certa. The article also raises the issue of the possibility of proving in a criminal trial that the offender’s conduct has fulfilled some specific characteristics of an offence. The subjectivity principle in criminal law in the context of evaluative characteristics has also been discussed. In conclusions, a possible solution to the problem of evaluative characteristics used in the provisions of the Act on Preventing Drug Addiction is proposed.
Artykuł porusza problematykę ocennych i nieostrych znamion używanych w opisach różnych typów czynów zabronionych w kontekście gwarancyjnej funkcji prawa karnego i zasady nullum crimen sine lege certa. Analiza charakteru tych znamion została przeprowadzona w oparciu o przepisy ustawy o przeciwdziałaniu narkomanii pod kątem dopuszczalnej rozpiętości tzw. pasa nieostrości i luzu decyzyjnego pozostawionego organom stosującym prawo. Wyniki tej analizy wskazują, że niejednokrotnie posłużenie się przez ustawodawcę znamionami ocennymi nadwyręża zasadę nullum crimen sine lege certa. W artykule poruszona została również kwestia możliwości udowodnienia w procesie karnym realizacji przez sprawcę poszczególnych znamion czynu zabronionego oraz problematyka zasady subiektywizmu prawa karnego na tle znamion ocennych. W konkluzji autorka proponuje możliwe rozwiązania problemu znamion ocennych użytych w przepisach ustawy o przeciwdziałaniu narkomanii.

The paper is a presentation of part of research on evaluative connotations of onymic idioms in a contrastive perspective. In the present paper the evaluative connotations of English and Italian evaluative anthroponymic idioms are discussed with a special focus on their cross-linguistic equivalence. The research material consists of two corpora of English and Italian units excerpted from mono- and bilingual lexicographic works. The mechanisms of evaluation exploited in English and Italian phraseological units are discussed. The typology of equivalents, covering various types, such as full equivalents, partial equivalents, equivalents with re-created anthroponyms, non-phraseological equivalents, pseudo-equivalents, is presented and exemplified.
Artykuł poświęcono omówieniu konotacji wartościujących idiomów z komponentem onimicznych w ujęciu kontrastywnym. Omówione zostały mechanizmy, które wykorzystywane są w angielskich i włoskich stałych połączeniach wyrazowych o charakterze idiomatycznym do wyrażania wartościowania. Materiał badawczy tworzą dwa korpusy angielskich i włoskich jednostek frazeologicznych wyekscerpowanych z jedno- i dwujęzycznych opracowań leksykograficznych. Przeprowadzona analiza pozwoliła na opracowanie typologii międzyjęzykowych ekwiwalentów badanych związków. Tworzą ją takie rodzaje ekwiwalentów, jak: ekwiwalenty absolutne, ekwiwalenty częściowe, ekwiwalenty z odtworzonym antroponimem, ekwiwalenty niefrazeologiczne i pseudoekwiwalenty.

The article is devoted to the study of the correct application of the evaluative concepts contained in the norms of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. Attention is drawn to certain difficulties in the application of the evaluative norms in the Convention: despite their objective necessity and usefulness, they create a room for the law enforcement entity’s own discretion up to subjectivism in resolving specific cases; they serve as an objective obstacle to the unification of the case law of the ECtHR and this creates preconditions for unequal implementation of ECtHR judgments in the national legal order; they cause the risk of errors in the application of the provisions of the Convention by the competent authorities of the Contracting States. It is established that the application of legal norms containing evaluative concepts is challenging not only owing to the specific properties of the evaluative concepts themselves, but also due to the peculiarities of adjudication by the ECtHR when applying the evaluative norms. The relevant case law of the ECtHR as well as examples of national legislation are analysed in support of these theoretical conclusions. Since the lack of uniform application of the evaluative norms of the Convention causes divergent use of the ECtHR’s judgments in the domestic judicial system, it is advised to follow a number of rules for reasoning of decisions by the domestic court. These rules will serve as a certain guarantee against ambiguous implementation of ECtHR judgments at the national level.

Opis:

Zinc and lead metal ores are minerals intended for strategically producing raw materials for the Polish economy, as indicated in the key Polish document: State Raw Materials Policy (PSP2050). It was specified among others that an important factor that will influence the development of Polish economy will be the access to key mineral raw materials from domestic resources. Currently Polish Zn-Pb ores mining no longer exists as the last operating mine Olkusz-Pomorzany that belonged to the Mining and Metallurgic Plant “Bolesław” Joint Stock Company due to the depletion of resources finished extraction in 2020. Despite this fact there still are areas of great potential in the scope of these minerals in Poland. It is the Zawiercie region, where there has been no extraction of these ores so far and is believed to have the best perspectives for future development. One should connect with this region the nearest future of functioning of the domestic Zn-Pb ores’ mining. It is in this region that the “Zawiercie 3” ore is situated. The ore was documented in 2014 by a private investor within the framework of the permit to search for and identify Zn-Pb ore deposits and it is currently the largest as to resources Zn-Pb ores’ deposit in Poland. Its resources are currently over 35 million tonnes, which constitutes app. 39% of all the documented balance sheet resources of Zn-Pb ores in Poland. The presented geological works performed by the private investor on the area of the “Zawiercie 3” ore and the results that were achieved thanks to them clearly indicate that well-designed and thoroughly performed exploratory and evaluative works that combine international standards and Polish guidelines can significantly influence the degree of documentation and the increase of resources in undeveloped Zn-Pb ores’ deposits.

In political discourse, the recipient is collective and intentional. Being a part of public discourse, political discourse abounds in speech acts that have emotive-evaluative function. In the prezent paper, the Author discusses the most frequent evaluative-emotive acts gleaned from parliamentary speeches, and these include: accusations, complaining, bragging, expressing recognition and justification. The methodological Framework adopted by the Author adheres to the model proposed by Aleksy Awdiejew. Another phenomenon observable in public discourse is aggression. Irrespective of this, expressing emotions in public discourse is sometimes ideologically motivated.

Semantic prosody is typically referred to as an evaluative function of certain words or multiword items appearing within collocates of positive or negative meaning. The present study deals with the semantic prosody (context properties) of extended lexical units (ELUs) according to the psycholinguistic variables ‘valence’ (emotional positivity), ‘arousal’ (excitement, mood-enhancement), and ‘concreteness’. The object of investigation are the verbal phrases feel blue (unambiguous idiomatic ELU, without a literal counterpart) and see red (ambiguous ELU, idiomatic or literal). The study builds on Snefjella & Kuperman (2016) who propose context norms for English words on the basis of a USENET mega-corpus. For the detection of ELU representations, a questionnaire-based survey was conducted with speakers of American English. For the detection of the context values of ELUs, a corpus research was carried on by using the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and the News on the Web corpus (NOW). The results suggest that ELU contexts largely conform to the averaged context norms of ELU constituents. ELU representations are strongly dissociated from contexts.

The article deals with evaluative vocabulary in the religious language in 16th century.The analysis focuses on the evaluative lexicon used by Rej to form an image of anevil man in David’s Psalter. The paraphrase used by Rej is rich with varied evaluativeexpressions in respect of the evil man, mainly adjectival elements. It is clearly visiblewhen compared to earlier medieval translations based on the verbal method of translatingwhich follow the Latin linguistic model which is not diverse. What attracts attention is notonly a big number of forms, but also the autonomy of the author’s lexical choices whichtestifies to the author’s free creation of a stereotypical idea of an evil man, to breakingwith the Latin shape of Wulgata and to a search of one’s own way of the art of translation.A tendency to avoid repetitions and to care for the synonymic diversity of the epithets haspaved a way in David’s Psalter for rare lexemes unknown to the literary language and formorphological doubles and lexemes formed with the use of rare formants. The materialanalysed has shown Rej as an artist who creates the text of his translation without anyrestraints and who applies synonymy as an important tool used to shade the meaning.

Although epilepsies does not automatically cause a serious failure in evaluative discernment as regards essential marital rights and duties that are mutually transmitted and accepted, nevertheless this disease may affect psyche and, in consequence, considerably affect our ability to put into practice the marital covenant. This perception is supported by the findings of psychiatric dn psychological research, and by church trials. It seems indispensable to describe a concrete disease in an accurate manner in order to learn its influence in a given case on the use of reason or evaluative discernment. Only the analysis of each case will allow a judge to make a right decision.

The paper is characterized by the methodological guideline on the complex of the nature of health considering the social and personal aspects of the human desire for health. Health is positioned as the natural, enduring, absolute value of life. It determines the constitutive signs of health as a value and it reveals the evaluative-emotive specifi city of the phraseme axiological oppositions “healthy — physically unhealthy”, “healthy — mentally unhealthy” and “healthy lifestyle — bad habits” which represent the physiological and psychological levels of the health value in Ukrainian phrasemics.
Artykuł przedstawia założenia metodologiczne dotyczące kompleksowego charakteru zdrowia, z uwzględnieniem społecznych i indywidualnych aspektów kształtowania potrzeb człowieka wobec zdrowia. Zdrowie zostało zdefi niowane jako naturalna, niezmienna, absolutna wartość życiowa. Ustalono konstytutywne cechy zdrowia jako wartości i ujawniono specyfi kę oceniająco-emotywną frazeologicznych opozycji aksjologicznych, typu: „zdrowy — fi zycznie niezdrowy”, „zdrowy — psychicznie niezdrowy” i „zdrowy tryb życia — nałogi”. To wszystko reprezentuje fi zjologiczny, jak również psychologiczny aspekt wartości zdrowia w jednostkach frazeologicznych.

Opis:

The Author analyses a selected text in terms of axiological markedness, including ideological markedness. The text conspicuously declares the sender’s Christian viewpoint. Next, the Author of this paper discusses the results of a questionnaire administered among students of journalism. The respondents answer questions whose aim is to indicate their method of text understanding, check students’ perception of the ideology ascribed to the author of the text under scrutiny, reveal the impressions the text makes as well as to uncover the ideological stand of the respondents. The majority of the respondents think that the author of the text wants to impose his opinion. The ideological stand declared by the students is mostly conservative and liberal, with religious fundamentalism being most often rejected.
Autorka analizuje pod względem nacechowania aksjologicznego, w tym ideolo- gicznego, wybrany tekst. Tekst ten wyraźnie deklaruje światopogląd chrześcijański nadawcy. Następnie autorka artykułu omawia wyniki ankiety przeprowadzonej wśród studentów dziennikarstwa. Badani odpowiadają na pytania mające wskazać sposób rozumienia tekstu, przypisywaną autorowi ideologię, odczucia, jakie budzi tekst, oraz określić postawę ideologiczną badanych. Ankietowani studenci – w odpowiedzi na pytania dotyczące treści – w większości opierają się na tekście. To samo oparcie ma przypisywanie ideologii jego autorowi. Większość badanych uważa, że autor przejawia chęć narzucania swoich przekonań. Ideologiami deklarowanymi są w większości konserwatyzm i liberalizm, a najwięcej odrzuceń ma fundamentalizm religijny.

Opis:

Das Untersuchungsfeld des vorliegenden Beitrags stellen wertend markierte nominale Derivate aus kontrastiver Sicht (Polnisch-Deutsch) dar. Es handelt sich um Neologismen oder Okkasionalismen von einer generell undurchsichtigen semantischen Struktur, deren Derivationsbasis Eigennamen bilden, und die in den beiden Sprachen meistens etymologisch identische Derivationssuffixe aufweisen, hauptsächlich lateinischer Herkunft. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Analyse ist vor allem eine Untersuchung von Derivationsschemata in Bezug auf diese Suffixe in beiden Sprachen, von dem Grad der Wirkung der Suffixe auf diese Derivate, mit Berücksichtigung der Perspektive ihrer Internationalisierung, sowie ein Vergleich der Semantik derjenigen Derivate, die unter morphologischem Aspekt sich voneinander unterscheiden, aus Sicht ihrer semantischen Analogie.
Tematem niniejszego artykułu są nacechowane wartościująco derywaty nominalne w ujęciu kontrastywnym niemiecko-polskim. Chodzi o neologizmy lub okazjonalizmy o generalnie nieprzejrzystej strukturze semantycznej, których podstawę derywacyjną stanowią nazwy własne i które w obu językach wykazują najczęściej tożsame etymologicznie sufiksy derywacyjne, głównie pochodzenia łacińskiego. Celem analizy jest przede wszystkim zbadanie schematów derywacyjnych w odniesieniu do tychże sufiksów w obu językach, stopnia oddziaływania sufiksów na te derywaty z uwzględnieniem perspektywy ich internacjonalizacji, jak również porównanie znaczenia derywatów zróżnicowanych w aspekcie struktury morfologicznej pod kątem ich analogii semantycznej.
The paper deals with the evaluative nominal derivatives from contrastive point of view. The focus is given to neologisms or occasionalisms that are on the whole semantically opaque, whose derivative base is constituted by proper names and which show mostly identical suffixes, primarily Latinate, in the both languages. The aim of the analysis is to investigate the derivative schemes referring to the suffixes in the both languages as well as the extent to which the suffixes influence the derivatives from the perspective of their internationalization. The other searching aspect is set to compare the meaning of the derivatives that are underlined by different morphological structures, taking into account their semantic analogy.

This study is designed to investigate the qualitative features of the stories produced by children, adults and older people with a special focus on sentence structures, the emergence of story units, Mean Length of Utterance (henceforward MLU) and evaluative language. Participants are 60 children from 3 to 5-year-olds, 60 adults from 20 to 30-year-olds and 60 older people who are 60 and over. Data were collected by using Mercer Meyer’s (1969) textless picture book, Frog, where are you?, which depicts the events that take place while a boy and a dog are in search of a missing frog in countryside.Results showed that there are significant differences in the qualitative features of the sentence structure produced by children and other two groups in the usage of connectives. Although adults and the older participants show similar features in the emergence and quality of story units as they are defined by Labov and Waletzky (1967), the narratives produced by children render significant differences both quantitatively and qualitatively. Regarding MLU, as they are in other narrative components, children are different from the other two groups. The mean length of sentences in adults’ stories is longer than in those of children and olds and the sentences produced by adults are more complex than those of both olds and children. All of the three groups use evaluative language in their narratives. However, the amount and quality of the evaluative language differs from the evaluative utterances adults and older participants produce.

The study focuses on the methodological views of Zygmunt Ziembiński, against the background of the axiological issues addressed in his scientific investigations. In this respect, the author distinguishes three development periods in Ziembiński’s work; the first was dominated by a psychologist and empiricist approach to axiology, whereas the onset of the second was marked by a semiotic-pragmatic turn. In both periods, the essence and properties of evaluative utterances became the chief object of inquiry. In the last phase of his work, however, Ziembiński devoted himself to the study of the values manifesting in law, writing chiefly about justice and the constitution.
Opracowanie koncentruje się na poglądach metodologicznych Zygmunta Ziembińskiego na tle zagadnień aksjologicznych podejmowanych w jego dociekaniach naukowych. W tym zakresie autor wyróżnia trzy okresy rozwojowe w twórczości tego uczonego; w pierwszym dominuje psychologistyczno-empiryczne podejście do aksjologii, natomiast początek drugiego wyznacza zwrot semiotyczno-pragmatyczny. W obu okresach istota i właściwości wypowiedzi oceniających stały się głównym przedmiotem dociekań. W ostatniej fazie swojej twórczości Ziembiński poświęcił się jednak badaniu wartości przejawiających się w prawie, pisząc przede wszystkim o sprawiedliwości i konstytucji.

This paper investigates the interplay between judicial argumentation and evaluative or emotive language identified in two US Supreme Court landmark cases on the right of same-sex couples to marry. The analysis of both majority and dissenting opinions leads to two main observations. First, marriage and liberty are indeed emotive words and they represent two major sites of contention between the concurring and dissenting judges. Second, there are important differences within the argumentative strategies employed by the judges. While (re)defining the concepts remains the major argumentative goal for both types of opinion, the majority opinions tacitly integrate the redefined concept of marriage into their argumentation. It is the dissenting opinions that explicitly raise the issue of (re)definition in order to defend and retain the original sense of marriage.

Opis:

The aim of the article is to present lexical evaluative expressions used by teenage authors of reports (Szymon Radzimierski and Nela Mała Reporterka ‘Nela The Small Reporter’) in descriptions of cultures other than their native culture. The author relies on the axiological hierarchy by Jadwiga Puzynina and includes both lexemes and idiomatic expressions. The excerpt of vocabulary showed the advantage of colloquial lexemes, which can be combined with all axiological categories. The analysis allowed to recreate the way of seeing one's own and foreign culture along with sensitivity to moral differences and to illustrate the tendency to colloquialise the language used in children's literature.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie leksykalnych środków wartościowania wykorzystywanych przez nastoletnich autorów reportaży (Nelę Małą Reporterkę oraz Szymona Radzimierskiego) w opisach kultur innych niż rodzima. Autorka opiera się na hierarchii aksjologicznej Jadwigi Puzyniny, uwzględnia zarówno leksemy, jak i związki frazeologiczne. Ekscerpcja słownictwa wykazała przewagę leksemów wielowartościowych o zabarwieniu potocznym, mogących łączyć się ze wszystkimi kategoriami aksjologicznymi. Analiza pozwoliła odtworzyć sposób widzenia własnej i obcej kultury oraz wrażliwość na odmienności obyczajowe, a także zilustrować tendencję do kolokwializacji języka literatury dziecięcej.

Opis:

This article attempts to describe the means of evaluation applied in French legal language. Analysing verdicts from the French court (Cour de cassation), this paper attempts to show ways to uncover the values system held by the judge. In order to achieve this aim, four groups of evaluative operators (modal truth-functional connectives, amplifying operators, emotive-evaluative modal operators and mental operators) are shown. The corpus under analysis is characterised by three aspects: intentional, conventional and institutional, as it makes references to the group of set convictions concerning the nature of a particular community. Thus one could see here a relation between the values behind the arguments in the verdict and the language used to express them.

In the presented work, an attempt is made to specify the theory-cognitive significance of J. Reykowski’s concept of multidimensional moral development for intercultural studies. This proposal seems to be particularly useful in pedagogical analyses dealing with moral reasoning of children. The presented research results and their interpretation confirm the presence of intercultural differentiation in the development of evaluation standards of learners in late childhood. Therefore, this concept may have broader application in intercultural studies in education.

The paper presents an analysis of Obama’s and Trump’s inaugural addresses with a view to evidencing how language can be manipulated and also reveal the speaker’s political and ideological stance through the use of marked and evaluative lexical items. The language sample selected for analysis contains personal pronouns and possessive adjectives ‘you, your, we, us, our, ours, ourselves, they, their, them, themselves’, determiner ‘other’ and the term ‘America’ with all its derivative forms as used in the two speeches.
Artykuł przedstawia analizę przemówień inauguracyjnych Baracka Obamy i Donalda Trumpa. Celem analizy jest wykazanie, w jaki sposób językiem można manipulować i w jaki sposób język ujawnia polityczne i ideologiczne stanowisko mówcy, np. przy użyciu rejestru specjalnego oraz wartościujących środków językowych. Na wyrażenia poddane analizie w niniejszym artykule składają się angielskie zaimki osobowe „you, your, we, us, our, ours, ourselves, they, their, them, themselves”, zaimek „other” oraz termin „America” wraz ze wszystkimi jego derywatami morfologicznymi zastosowanymi w omawianych przemówieniach.

The most important aim of this paper was to collect evaluative vocabulary used on the internet, on the assumption that such lexis is a constitutive characteristic of the internet variety of contemporary Polish. Therefore, the dictionary of terms collected by the author constitutes the major part of this work. It contains neologisms, colloquialisms, expressive terms and insults. The material was excerpted from two hundred comments posted on the internet portal Onet.pl. The comments refer to the articles concerning politics, celebrities and the controversial events which took place in Poland in September 2016. Many of the terms identified in the analysed comments are not recorded in contemporary lexicographic sources (e.g. Kim Dzong Khaczka and fapredaktorek). Their meanings can only be decoded with reference to the context in which they were used.

W niniejszym artykule proponuję pewną klasyfikację wyrażeń ocennych. Uznaję, że podstawowym kryterium odróżnienia ich od wyrażeń deskryptywnych jest test bezbłędnej niezgody. Następnie omawiam kilka zjawisk, które mogłyby podawać w wątpliwość linię tego podziału: zależność kontekstową, nieostrość i używanie wyrażeń deskryptywnych do wyrażania sądów ocennych. Przytaczam propozycję Christophera Kennedy’ego (2016), zgodnie z którą przymiotniki stopniowalne mogą wyrażać dwa rodzaje subiektywności. Modyfikuję to stanowisko przez postulat wyróżnienia dodatkowego podrodzaju wyrażeń subiektywnych, które nie są ocenne (nazywam je doświadczeniowymi) i proponuję test językowy, który pozwala je identyfikować. W końcu sprawdzam, gdzie moja klasyfikacja umiejscawia predykat smaku „smaczny”. Sugeruję, że niesie on semantycznie zakodowaną pozytywną ocenę oraz warunek swojego użycia – tj. informację, że można go użyć do pozytywnego ocenienia smaku czegoś, co strukturalnie upodabnia go do terminów ocennych nietreściwych (ang. thin evaluative terms), nie mówi bowiem nic deskryptywnego.
In my paper, I propose a certain classification of evaluative expressions. I hypothesize that the basic criterion to distinguish between evaluative and descriptive terms is the faultless disagreement test. Next, I discuss a few kinds of phenomena which seem to render this distinction dubious: context-sensitivity, vagueness and using descriptive terms to express evaluative judgments. Further, I investigate Ch. Kennedy’s proposal (2016) according to which gradable adjectives can express two kinds of subjectivity (one being generated by vagueness and one stemming from evaluativity). I modify this account by postulating another sub-class of subjective adjectives (“experiential adjectives”) which are not subjective due to vagueness and which are not evaluative either as they do not necessarily encode any valence. I propose a linguistic test to identify these expressions. Finally, I check where my classification of adjectives places the predicate of personal taste “tasty”. I suggest that “tasty” is both evaluative and experiential and additionally, it carries a condition of its own use, that is the information that it can be used to positively assess the taste of something. This, I argue, makes it similar to thin evaluative terms as it carries no descriptive component at all.

Opis:

The aim of the experimental study presented in this work was to determine how messages about the qualities of people formed as negation are processed. This study was designed to verify the validity of two models – schema-plus-tag model and fusion model, thus trying to present and explain the mechanism of processing negated messages. The study focuses on processing of negation with use of complementary bipolar and antonymous expressions. In two experiments various descriptions of hypothetical person, created on the basis of the above-mentioned types of phrases, were presented to participants. The article ends with the statistical analysis of results and their interpretation from the perspective of theory of negation coding.

The article analyzes the trends in the development of the vocabulary of the Russian language at the beginning of the 21st century, reflected in the dictionary of neologisms, which illustrates the changes in the axiological linguistic picture of the world of Russians, in particular, we trace an intensive rethinking of the meanings of words that contain political idiologems or mythologems, an expansion of the fund of words and meanings with evaluative semantics due to global processes of jargonization, criminalization, vulgarization, falsification (verbalization of untruth), feminization, intensification of a sign or action, verbalization of non-verbals, the actualization of precedence and creativity (active modelling of the language game).
В статье проанализированы тенденции развития лексики русского языка начала ХХІ века, отраженные в словаре неологизмов, что иллюстрирует изменения аксиологической языковой картины мира россиян, в частности прослеживаем интенсивное переосмысление значений слов, заключающих в себе политические идиологемы или мифологемы, расширение фонда слов и значений с оценочной семантикой за счет глобальных процессов жаргонизации, криминализации, вульгаризации, фальсификации (вербализация неправды), феминизации, интенсификации, вербализации невербалики, актуализации прецедентности и креативности (активное моделирование языковой игры).
Artykuł analizuje kierunki rozwoju słownictwa języka rosyjskiego na początku XXI wieku, odzwierciedlone w słowniku neologizmów, który ilustruje zmiany w aksjologicznym obrazie językowym świata Rosjan, w szczególności obserwujemy intensywne przemyślenie znaczeń słów zawierających polityczne idiologemy lub mitologemy, poszerzenie zasobu słów i znaczeń o semantykę wartościującą w wyniku globalnych procesów żargonizacji, kryminalizacji, wulgaryzacji, falsyfikacji (werbalizacji nieprawdy), feminizacja, intensyfikacja, werbalizacja niewerbaliki, aktualizacja precedentnosti i kreatywności (aktywne modelowanie gry językowej).

Fenomen szczęścia stanowi problem dla etyki z dwóch powodów. Po pierwsze, utrudnia sformułowanie jednorodnych sądów moralnych dla dwóch lub więcej działań, które wydają się do siebie podobne w każdym moralnie istotnym aspekcie, z wyjątkiem niektórych udanych lub niefortunnych zdarzeń, które mają miejsce w jednym przypadku, a w drugim nie. Wystąpienie tych zdarzeń nie było pod kontrolą żadnego z agentów, ale dla zewnętrznych obserwatorów wydaje się być podstawą bardziej rygorystycznego lub bardziej tolerancyjnego osądu moralnego w jednym przypadku, a w drugim nie. Po drugie, szczęście może wpłynąć na nasze poczucie sensu życia poprzez sukces lub porażkę naszych ważnych egzystencjalnie projektów życiowych. Fakt ten sugeruje konieczność moralnie dopuszczalnych warunków polegających na szczęściu w formułowaniu i realizacji własnego projektu życiowego. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiam możliwości zastosowania głównych poglądów na szczęście do rozwiązania powyższych problemów.
The phenomenon of luck poses a problem for ethics for two reasons. First, it makes it difficult to formulate homogeneous moral judgments for two or more actions which seem to be similar to each other in every morally relevant aspect except of some successful or unfortunate events that take place in one case and not in the other. The occurrence of these events wasn’t under control of any of the agents but for external observers it tends to be the basis for more rigorous or more tolerant moral judgment in one case and not in the other. Second, luck can affect our sense of life through success or failure of ours existentially important life projects. This fact suggests necessity of conditions for morally permissible relying on luck in formulating and pursuing one’s life project. In this paper I present possibilities of applying main views on luck to resolve the above problems.

In the article native appelative form surnames of the inhabitants of Śląsk Cieszyński taken from 19th century archives were described. Those surnames without derivative indicators were the basis for the search for semantic connotations (cultural and regional) present in appelative roots. While analysing the collected data the author referred to axiological semantics and considered the sociolinguistic aspects of name-giving. Moreover, references to statistical research were made.

Opis:

This paper is concerned with expressive vocabulary used by high school students and university students in Bialystok. It focuses on names denoting people, paying particular attention to those terms which have not been recorded in any dictionaries of general Polish. The items in question have been collected by means of questionnaires, and analysed in terms of their semantic and morphological properties. Attention has been given to such ways of enriching the lexicon as neologisms, borrowings and the employment of linguistic stereotypes. The author’s findings enable the identification of the mechanisms which are responsible for the creation of such expressive terms; they also reveal the most popular and fashionable names used by the young people. This paper demonstrates that the majority of expressive names used by high school and university students are pejorative in character. The names they use are often disrespectful, ironic and or vulgar; those of a positive character are substantially less common.

Opis:

Dotychczasowe badania percepcji miast prowadzone były przy niskiej rozdzielczości przestrzennej, najczęściej przez uporządkowanie jednostek administracyjnych albo z wykorzystaniem mapy całego miasta, a następnie interpretowania umiejętności kartograficznych respondentów. W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono podejście badawcze, w którym najpierw zostały wydzielone spójne wewnętrznie, wynikające z charakteru miejsca obszary badawcze, pokrywające całe miasto, a percepcję zbadano opierając się na bazie miejsc reprezentatywnych tych obszarów. Okazało się, że znaczną część percepcji determinuje struktura funkcjonalno-przestrzenna miejsca. Odmienne postrzeganie prawo- i lewobrzeżnej Warszawy okazało się jedynie stereotypem. Stymulacyjny charakter miasta dotyczył wyłącznie Śródmieścia, co sugeruje, że całościowy umysłowy obraz miasta powstaje na podstawie charakteru jego centrum. Zostało potwierdzone, że zieleń i woda jest niezbędnym elementem miejsca zamieszkania, pracy i wypoczynku oraz, że niezmiennie od ponad 35 lat najlepiej oceniany jest Trakt Królewski, od Starego Miasta do Wilanowa.
Previous urban perception studies were conducted at low spatial resolution, most often by select administrative units or based on map of the whole city and then interpret the cartographic skills of the respondents. In this paper we present a research approach where coherent, research-based areas covering the whole city were separated. Perception was defined in random representative places. As a result, the functional-spatial structure of a place is a significant part of perception, the different perception of the right and left bank of Warsaw is only a stereotype and the stimulating district in Warsaw is only Śródmieście. This suggests that the overall mental image of the city is based on the nature of city center. The research confirmed that green space and water are an essential element of residence, work and leisure and The Royal Route, from the Old Town to Wilanów, is best appreciated for over 35 years.

Opis:

Some argue that the term “explanation” in science is ambiguous, referring to at least three distinct concepts: a communicative concept, a representational concept, and an ontic concept. Each is defined in a different way with its own sets of norms and goals, and each of which can apply in contexts where the others do not. In this paper, I argue that such a view is false. Instead, I propose that a scientific explanation is a complex entity that can always be analyzed along a communicative dimension, a representational dimension, and an ontic dimension. But all three are always present within scientific explanations. I highlight what such an account looks like, and the potential problems it faces (namely that a single explanation can appear to have incompatible sets of norms and goals that govern it). I propose a solution to this problem and demonstrate how this account can help to dissolve current disputes in philosophy of science regarding debates between epistemic and ontic accounts of mechanistic explanations in the life sciences.

One of the aspects of the secondary use of proper names, their metaphoric function, is under consideration in the paper. Proper names as metaphors, through a variety of connotative content, relativelyoften provide some type of evaluation of reality. These evaluations can be negative, for example, nowe wcielenie doktora Mengele, żydowski Stalin, сербская Голгофа or positive, for example, Napoleon mody, nasz Leonardo da Vinci, Эльдорадо оптовых закупок. The evaluation process with a metaphor is a generally available way of getting to know and assessing reality. This universal means of communication is frequently applied by authors of journalistic texts.

Opis:

This paper investigates comments left by users of Allegro – an on-line auction website. With the use of pragmalinguistics, author treats the e-commerce site comments as emotive-evaluative act directed towards both specific and potential contractors. It’s also an act used by the user to build websites’ participant image. Among positive acts we can distinguish acts of praising, which praise the way of closing the deal, product’s quality, contractor or the message itself. The second group consists of courtesy acts or polite sentences used In the acts of praising. Neutral comments are dominated by complaints. Their content has usually negative tone, however the addressees tend to ease them with means of such words as “unfortunately” or other words reflecting how sorry they are. The list of negative comments is dominated by acts of warning and advice. Users who initiate communication usually use censorious tone which causes asymmetry in relations between them and the addressee. The study shows that users willingly use their own words to rate the service and in addition to graphic scale and template offered by the website they describe their emotions.

Opis:

This paper constitutes a summary of studies in the field of axiological linguistics. Its main aim is to present a relationship between the moral judgement and the aesthetic evaluation of characters in the Polish fantasy literature and to elaborate on some of their their characteristics. The study shows that most of the analysed characters were created on the basis of an aesthetic and ethical parallelism, which means that the righteousbeautiful or the evil-hideous types are realized. Yet the parallelism is by no means overt in the literature. A tremendous role in modification of the character’s profile is played by such attributes as the character’s eyes and voice. Descriptions of the character’s body frame and scars, recurring features in the character’s profile, and means of indirect valuation (mostly colour) are axiologically analysed. Also, the most pronounced trends in the use of primarily evaluative means are pointed out.

Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird der Frage nach der Präsenz von Emotionen und Bewertungen in meinungsorientierten Pressetexten der Sportberichterstattung nachgegangen. Im Fokus der Erwägungen stehen Prozesse der Emotionalisierung von Aussagen, die durch adäquate sprachliche Bewertungsmittel unterstützt werden. Die erwähnten Sprachstrategien im Rahmen der Sportberichterstattung werden als immanente Bestandteile dieser behandelt und manifestieren sich sowohl in der Exposition eigener Emotionen und Meinungen des Senders selbst, als auch im Bestreben, beim Empfänger angemessene Emotionen und Reaktionen hervorzurufen. Versuche, auf den Rezipienten durch intentionale Sprachhandlungen einen Einfluss auszuüben werden im Kontext der pragmatischen Kategorie der Persuasion behandelt.
This paper is devoted to the presence of emotions and evaluation in sports reports. The processes of statement emotionalisation, supported by appropriately selected evaluative linguistic measures make the focus of the considerations here. The aforementioned language strategies in sports reporting are treated as its intrinsic elements and are manifested both in the exhibition of the sender's emotions and opinions, as well as in striving to evoke specific emotions and reactions in the recipient. Football press releases, aimed at expressing and forming opinions, representing the text genre of sports commentary, served as illustrative material in the discussion. Attempts at influencing the recipient through intentional linguistic actions, and thus striving to obtain a desired response to the speech acts transmitted to him, are treated through the lens of the pragmatic category of persuasion.

The article analyses the mode of establishing and recording the process of poetry valuation in Zarys literatury polskiej z ostatnich lat szesnastu [An outline of the literature of the last sixteen years] written by Piotr Chmielowski, as well as the textual strategies of the author that modeled the transformations in the discourse of the author. It is proved in the article that in the Chmielowski’s disquisitions the problem of evaluation is just as important as the evaluation as a problem. The evaluation of poetry conducted by the critic was an element of self-identification of the generation of ”young poets” that he himself represented, as well as a proof for their longing for grand poetry, discomfort resulting from lack of authority figures and difficulties in expressing one’s own or/and national suffering. The use of the so-called ”argument of poetry” has been recognized here as a distinctive feature of Chmielowski’s idiolect that serves to dynamize his critical writings.

Naczelnym celem praktyków badań FGI jest pozyskanie informacji umożliwiających zleceniodawcom badań rozstrzygnięcie pytań problemowych lub problemów decyzyjnych – uzyskanie informacji różnorodnych, nasyconych i unikalnych. Na podstawie naszych badań stwierdzamy, że na jakość merytoryczną badania FGI wpływa siła aktywacji poszczególnych efektów grupowych. Precyzując, wymiar nasycenia informacji jest regulowany przez siłę aktywacji efektu stymulacji i śnieżnej kuli, z kolei dwa pozostałe wymiary (różnorodność i unikalność informacji) są pochodną stopnia nasilenia efektu bezpieczeństwa, spontaniczności oraz syndromu grupowego myślenia. Skoro istnieje przełożenie między metodologiczną a praktyczną jakością badania FGI, warto poszukiwać czynników mogących różnicować siłę aktywacji efektów grupowych. Nasz artykuł jest propozycją uwzględniającą wskaźniki i zasady pozwalające w sposób zobiektywizowany sprawdzić, czy analizowana zmienna (np. cecha osobowości dyskutanta) jest czynnikiem faktycznie różnicującym nasilenie efektów grupowych i tym samym pośrednio oddziałującym na praktyczną jakość badania FGI.
The main goal of FGI praxis is to gather (diverse, rich and unique) pieces of information that can help clients, for whose companies the research is conducted, address the problems or decisions that they need to make. Based on our research results we can claim that the strength of the activation of different group effects influences the quality of merit in FGI research. To be precise, the dimension the snowballing effect. The other two dimensions (diversity and uniqueness) derive from the level of the intensity of the security effect, the spontaneity effect and the group thinking syndrome. If there is a relation between methodological and practical research quality in FGI, it is worth looking into factors that can differentiate the strength of the activation of these group effects. Our article is a proposal (of how it might be done) that involves indicators and rules allowing for the objective testing of whether an analyzed variable (e.g. a feature of character of a focus group participant) is an actual factor that differentiates the escalation of group effects and at the same time indirectly affects the practical quality of FGI.
