Muzyka filmowa i obraz-kryształ w Strukturze kryształu Krzysztofa Zanussiego Tematyka debiutanckiego filmu fabularnego Krzysztofa Zanussiego Struktura kryształu (1969) koncentruje się wokół dwóch naukowców o przeciwstawnych poglądach: jeden z nich charakteryzuje się integralnością etyczną, podczas gdy drugi kieruje się konformizmem. Polaryzacje te znajdują odzwierciedlenie w koncepcji obrazu-kryształu Gillesa Deleuze’a, którą wykorzystano w prezentowanym artykule w odniesieniu do ścieżki dźwiękowej Wojciecha Kilara. Autorka uzasadnia tezę o skomponowaniu muzyki tła w sposób umożliwiający przekształcanie płaszczyzny porozumienia między leżącymi u podstaw filmu antagonistycznymi światopoglądami, co ostatecznie prowadzi do ukazania ostrej krytyki społecznej rzeczywistości Polski po 1968 roku.
Krzysztof Zanussi’s 1969 debut feature film, The Structure of Crystal (Struktura kryształu), revolves around two scientists with opposing worldviews—one rooted in ethical integrity and the other driven by conformism. These polarities are reflected in Gilles Deleuze’s notion of the crystal-image, which I apply to Wojciech Kilar’s music for the film. I argue that Kilar’s underscoring continuously reshapes the grounds of understanding between the antagonistic worldviews at the film’s core, ultimately to deliver a powerful critique of the social reality of post-1968 Poland.

Opis:
The new three-dimensional coordination polymer termed {[Na2SDC(H2O)]} n (SDC2-= C16H10O42-) has been synthesized using workstation Easymax 102 while controlling the conditions and monitoring in-situ reagents. The metal complex was obtained in the reaction of sodium hydroxide with a suspension of 4,4’-stilbenedicarboxylic acid in aqueous medium. The compound was characterized by elemental analysis, single crystal, and powder X-ray diffraction methods, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, SEM and optical microscopy, TG-DSC and TG-FTIR thermal analysis in air and nitrogen atmosphere. In the crystal structure of {[Na2SDC(H2O)]} n appears penta- and hexacoordinated sodium atoms joined by octa- and decadentate SDC2- linkers. Aqua ligand acts as bridge between Na1 and Na2 atoms. The as-synthesized sodium complex is thermally stable up to 86°C whereas its dehydrated form has extreme stability up to 491°C. Removal of water molecule leads to the crystal-to-crystal transformation yielded changes in coordination modes of COO groups. Reversibility of the hydration process in the studied complex was also examined.

Artykuł podejmuje temat idei smart city oraz sposobu jej wdrożenia na przykładzie obiektu firmy Siemens – The Crystal w Londynie. Budynek ten jest jednocześnie obiektem typu smart building, jak i przestrzenią wystawienniczą prezentująca smart city w trzech, powiązanych ze sobą, skalach: mega, makro i mikro. Pierwsza z nich odnosi się do globalnych uwarunkowań kształtujących współczesne miasta, takich jak: coraz szybsza urbanizacja wraz z rosnącym znaczeniem miast, zmiany klimatu oraz zmiany demograficzne. Skala makro odnosi się do współczesnych miast: ich formy urbanistycznej, czy użytych instrumentów planistycznych. Skala mikro akcentuje perspektywę mieszkańca danego miasta oraz postrzeganie przez niego przestrzeni miejskiej. Autor stawia pytanie, czy zastosowana systematyka i zaprezentowane kierunki wdrażania idei smart city opartej na modelu przedstawionym w pawilonie wystawowym firmy Siemens mogą stanowić wyznacznik przy transformacji danego ośrodka.
The article tackles a problem of the smart city idea and how it has been implemented on the example of the Siemens’ building- The Crystal in London. The building is simultaneously a smart building, as well as an exhibition space presenting the smart city idea in three interconnected scales: mega, macro and micro. The mega area looks at the global megatrends which shape contemporary cities, such as: rapid urbanization with the growing importance of cities; climate change and demographic change. The macro scale refers to contemporary cities: their urban form and planning methods. The micro scale emphasizes the perspective of a inhabitant of a given city and their perception of urban space. The author poses a question whether the applied systematics and the smart city methods presented in the Siemens’ building may be a determinant in cities’ transformation.

W artykule przedstawiono problem symulacji zachowania się materiału podczas przeróbki plastycznej z wykorzystaniem Metody Elementów Skończonych (MES). W odróżnieniu od konwencjonalnej symulacji MES do opisu zachowania się materiału wykorzystano model Crystal Plasticity (CP). Główną zaletą tego modelu jest możliwość jednoczesnego opisu umocnienia materiału oraz rozwoju tekstury podczas deformacji. Model ten jednak wymaga identyfikacji parametrów, które nie są powszechnie dostępne w literaturze. W przedstawionej pracy do identyfikacji parametrów wykorzystano metodę odwrotną. Zidentyfikowano parametry modelu dla monokryształów aluminium, a następnie zastosowano je do symulacji odkształcana polikrystalicznego aluminium. Otrzymane wyniki są zgodne z wynikami doświadczalnymi odkształcania polikrystalicznego aluminium.
The paper focused on the problem of simulation of material behaviour during forming process. The simulation is carried out by Finite Element Method (FEM). In contrary to conventional FEM simulation to describe material behaviour Crystal Plasticity (CP) model was used. Main advantage of the model is possibility of simultaneous description of material hardening and texture development during deformation. Nevertheless, the model usage requires its parameters identification, which are not commonly available in literature. In this work inverse method was used to identify the models parameters. First, the parameters were identified for aluminum single crystal, subsequently they were used for simulation of polycrystalline aluminum behaviour during deformation. Obtained results are in good agreement with those commonly observed in polycrystalline aluminum deformation experiments

According to most crystal growth theories, the "as grown" crystal morphology is dominated by the slow-growing faces and the fast-growing faces may "grow out" and not be represented in the final crystal habit. In this paper a brief survey is given of the recently developed correlation between the evolution of both fast- and slow-growing surfaces, their relative growth rates, and the crystallographic structure of crystal. It is shown that even the fast-growing faces may increase their sizes. On the other hand, the slow-growing faces may decrease and, in consequence, disappear from crystal morphology. Such a behaviour of slow- and fast-growing surfaces influences the growth and evolution of both low- and high-index faces.

The author of the article aims to add his voice to the debate (fundamental for the studies of Norwid) on the tangled historical and literary origin of Cyprian Norwid and methods of legitimising it: the romantic and modernist. Although the text is clearly seeking a new language to talk about Norwid’s association with the subsequent modernist era (to describe Norwid’s case the author uses the term “fuzzy modernism,” while calling the poet himself “ an eschatologist of modernism,” distinct in this respect from the apparently similar Fyodor Dostoyevsky – modernist eschatologist), the ultimate conclusion is the Polish poet should be placed in the contaminated trend. Also suggested is a need for a study of his literary works that would provide a double model of the nineteenth background of Norwid’s text: as romantic, and at the same time modernist. As a symbol of Norwid’s modernity’s the author chooses London’s Crystal Palace, a place that Norwid (like Dostoyevsky) visited between 3 and 13 December 1852.

The improved model based on slack variables is designed to optimize a photonic crystal filter. An optimization model of the filter is established, with the transmission quantity in a stop-band as the objective function and the transmission quantity outside a stop-band as the constraint condition. The improved model is obtained by introducing slack variables in the infeasible region. With the treatment of objective and constraint functions, the optimization problem and the improved model are solved by sequential linear programming. Then the convergent solution satisfying the constraints can be found. The change of the objective function and design variables with iteration steps is presented by numerical examples, and the influence of by the constraints on the central frequency of the stop-band is discussed, indicating that the improved model is available and effective for optimization of a photonic crystal filter.

The crystal structure of new conformation of the CyMe4-BTBP ligand (ttc) has been presented. The ttt conformer of this compound in a form of THF solvate has been also crystallized. The geometries of six possible conformations (ttt, ttc, tct, tcc, ctc and ccc) of the CyMe4-BTBP ligand have been modeled in the gas phase and in solutions (MeOH and H2O) by DFT calculations using B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) method. According to the calculations, in the three different media the conformers with trans orientation of the N atoms in the bipyridyl moiety are the most stable.

This paper outlines a measurement method of properties of microstructured optical fibers that are useful in sensing applications. Experimental studies of produced photonic-crystal fibers allow for a better understanding of the principles of energy coupling in photonic-crystal fibers. For that purpose, fibers with different filling factors and lattice constants were produced. The measurements demonstrated the influence of the fiber geometry on the coupling level of light between the cores. For a distance between the cores of 15 μm, a very low level (below 2%) of energy coupling was obtained. For a distance of 13 μm, the level of energy transfer toneighboring cores on the order of 2-4% was achieved for a filling factor of 0.29. The elimination of the energycoupling penomenon between the cores was achieved by duplicating the filling factor of the fiber. The coupling level was as high as 22% in the case of fibers with a distance between the cores of 8.5 μm. Our results can be used for microstructured-fiber sensing applications and for transmission-channel switching in liquid-crystal multi-core photonic fibers.

We report on our experimental characterization of index-guiding photonic crystal fibers (PCF) from their far field intensity distribution. The algorithm presented below makes it possible to determine the geometrical parameters of the PCF (core diameter, air hole spacing and air hole diameter) from its far field pattern. We obtained good agreement with the manufacturer's data for all fibers tested.

Properties of two different photonic crystal fibers (PCF) were characterized, enabling comparisons. Properties investigated included spectral attenuation, polarization mode dispersion (PMD), optical time domain reflectometer characteristics, elastooptic factor describing transmission delay induced by axial strain plus effects of temperature cycling and fiber twist on PMD and loss. In particular, temperature and twist dependence of PMD was different for each fiber tested. For optical measurements, fibers were fusion spliced to pigtails with standard telecom single mode fibers. PCF splicing procedures and solutions adopted to minimize collapse of holes during arc fusion and splice loss are presented. It was found that fusion splicing procedure must be individually tailored to each combination of fibers.

The valence electron density distribution of krypton and xenon located in the oxygen vacancy and in its nearest neighbourhood was performed by application of the method “ab initio”. The results are presented on the graphs. The bonding energies of krypton and xenon in the uranium dioxide crystal lattice were calculated. It was found also that krypton and xenon cause a local increase of UO1.75Xe0.25 and UO1.75Kr0.25 unit cell and cause its deformation what is presented in tables. The force constants of krypton and xenon were also assigned what gives evidence about the strong bond of krypton and xenon with the UO1.75Xe0.25 and UO1.75Kr0.25 single crystal lattice. Obtained results are compared with the analogical studies of He atom incorporation into UO2 single crystal lattice.

Photonic crystal fibres are longitudinally uniform fibres in which in lateral directions periodic refractive index changes occur. Two basically different light guiding mechanisms occur in crystal fibres: index guiding and bandgap guiding. In the paper different modelling methods have been evaluated when applied to photonic crystal fibres. In particular, the method of lines has been shown to be effective and reliable for both classes of photonic crystal fibres. High accuracy results for optical field distribution and dispersion characteristics in a photonic crystal fibre have been achieved with the method of lines.

Photonic crystal ring resonators are promising candidates for realizing all optical filters with acceptable transmission efficiency and quality factor values. In this paper, by putting a hexagon-shaped structure at the middle of on 7 × 7 square cavity we created a ring resonator structure and designed a channel drop filter. The drop wavelength of our filter is at 1550.4 nm, with transmission efficiency and quality factor equal to 94% and 707, respectively. Our structure is composed of dielectric rods immersed in air. Because in this kind of structures the dominant band gap is in TM mode, all of our simulations have been done in TM mode. The total footprint of our filter is 199.4 μm2, which makes it suitable for all optical integrated circuits.

The crystal structures, density of states, energy gap, thermodynamic properties, impact sensitivities and morphology of beryllium carbohydrazide perchlorate ([Be(CHZ)3](ClO4)2), magnesium carbohydrazide perchlorate ([Mg(CHZ)3](ClO4)2), calcium carbohydrazide perchlorate ([Ca(CHZ)3] (ClO4)2), strontium carbohydrazide perchlorate ([Sr(CHZ)3](ClO4)2) and barium carbohydrazide perchlorate ([Ba(CHZ)3](ClO4)2) were investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) and crystal morphology theory. The results show that all of the complexes have six-coordinated distorted octahedra, which is different from previous works. This was rationalised by consideration of the intermolecular interactions in the crystal structures. Hence the crystal structure is now more reliable. The chemical reactions of the whole molecule may be triggered by an electron transition of CHZ or ClO4 −. Furthermore the energy gaps were observed, and the values of the impact sensitivities were inferred to have the following sequence: [Be(CHZ)3](ClO4)2 > [Mg(CHZ)3](ClO4)2 > [Sr(CHZ)3](ClO4)2 > [Ca(CHZ)3](ClO4)2 > [Ba(CHZ)3](ClO4)2. In addition, the thermodynamic equations at 25-1000 K were obtained. The positive values of the standard molar free enthalpies shows that carbohydrazide perchlorates are stable at 298.15 K. The (1 0 -1) and (0 0 2) faces are the most important growth directions of the crystal morphologies, and have the minimum growth rates. From the cleaved main growth faces, it can be deduced that surface active agents with active hydrogen atoms in the functional groups could be used as crystal-control reagents to control the crystal morphology for alkaline-earth carbohydrazide perchlorates.

We theoretically investigate the properties of narrow transmission mode (defect mode) within the reflection band in one-dimensional symmetric defective photonic crystal containing double negative metamaterial and high temperature superconductors. The transmittance spectrum of the proposed structure is obtained by using the characteristic or transfer matrix method. The results show that by increasing the thickness of air defect, transmission mode shifts towards the lower frequency side. But when the thickness of a superconductor layer is increased, transmission mode shifts towards the high frequency side. Further, the effect of temperature variation of superconducting defect on the defect mode has been investigated and found that when the temperature of superconducting layer increases the frequency of defect mode is red shifted. The shift in frequency has smaller value in the lower temperature region than in the higher temperature region, even if the change in temperature is same. Finally we have discussed the effect of variation of thickness on the defect mode by using the double negative metamaterial as defect layer in place of superconductor layer. The result shows that we get two modes for smaller thickness of double negative layer but only a single mode for larger thickness.

Opis:
Optical logics will play a crucial role in the next generation all optical data processing networks. Therefore an all optical majority gate will be designed by using nonlinear photonic crystal ring resonators. For realizing the proposed structure we need three nonlinear resonant rings. In order to make nonlinear resonant rings, we used chalcogenide glass as the dielectric material for the dielectric rods. The output port of the proposed structure will be active only when two or three logic input ports are active. The rise and fall time values of the proposed structure are about 2 and 1 ps, respectively. The total footprint of the proposed structure is about 1287 μm2.

Considering high pressure torsion experiments as a motivation, plastic behavior of crystalline solids is treated as a highly viscous material flow through an adjustable crystal lattice. Instead of the traditional decomposition rule considering the deformation gradient as a product of the elastic and plastic parts, the proposed model is based on its rate form: the velocity gradient consists of the lattice velocity gradient and the sum of the velocity gradients corresponding to the slip rates of individual slip systems; the slip strains themselves are not defined in the model. The geometrical changes caused by material flow and the slip strains can be specified a posteriori. Crystal lattice distortions are measured with respect to a lattice reference configuration. In an adopted rigid plastic approximation the lattice distortions are reduced to rotations. Constitutive equations incorporate non-local hardening caused by close range interactions among dislocations.

Ciekłe kryształy są szeroko badane ze względu na ich zastosowanie w wielu urządzeniach optycznych oraz jako składniki mieszanin chemicznych. Powszechnie stosowane są trzy metody identyfikacji faz ciekłokrystalicznych: obserwacja tekstur za pomocą mikroskopu polaryzacyjnego, dyfrakcja promieni rentgenowskich oraz termodynamiczna metoda współmieszalności. Wszystkie wymienione techniki mają jednak istotne ograniczenia. W tej pracy, po raz pierwszy, prezentujemy nową metodę identyfikacji mezofaz opartą na mikroskopii polaryzacyjnej – dynamiczną dwuwymiarową analizę termooptyczną (DDAT). Istota metody polega na statystycznej analizie obrazów mikroskopowych powstałych przy depolaryzacji światła przechodzącego przez medium ciekłokrystaliczne umieszczone w zmiennym polu elektrycznym. Opisana metoda jest efektywna i tania, co umożliwia zastosowanie jej zarówno w profesjonalnych badaniach, jak i w procesie dydaktycznym.
Liquid crystals are widely studied because of their application in many optical devices and as components of chemical mixtures. For identifying liquid crystalline phases three basic methods are used: polarizing microscope observations of optical texture, X-ray diffraction and miscibility method. All of these techniques have significant limitations. In this work, for the first time, we present a new method to identify mesophases based on polarization microscopy – dynamic two-dimensional thermooptical analysis (DTD TOA). The essence of the method is based on a statistical analysis of microscopic images resulting from the depolarization of the light passing through the liquid crystal medium disposed in the alternating electric field. The described method is effective and inexpensive, which makes it attractive for applications in both professional research and the teaching process.

In this paper we will propose and design an all optical amplitude shift keying demodulator using a photonic crystal based nonlinear ring resonator. The proposed structure will be designed such that it can generate digital 0 and 1 based on the amplitude of the input signal. The working mechanism is based on controlling the optical behavior of the resonant ring using optical intensity. The proposed structure was simulated using plane wave expansion and finite difference time domain methods. The simulation results show that the rise and fall times for the proposed structure are 0.5 and 0.1 ps, respectively.

The weighting factors method and the response surface methodology are used to achieve multi-objective optimization of a dielectric layer photonic crystal filter. The size of period and the transmission quantity are considered simultaneously and a multi-objective optimization model of filter is established, which takes the size of period and transmission quantity to be minimized in stop-band as objectives. Global approximate expressions of the objective and the constraint functions are found by response surface methodology. Then the weighting factors method is employed to convert the model into a quadratic programming model and the optimal parameters can be obtained using sequence quadratic programming. Examples provide the optimized results in three different weight coefficients. The effect of the weighting factors on the value of the objective function is also discussed. Results show that the present method is precise and efficient for multi-objective optimization of a dielectric layer photonic crystal filter.

The optimally thorium-doped Pb0.9Th0.1ZrO3 was selected for studying thorium doping effect on the structural parameters of lead zirconate crystal. The investigations were made on the low concentrations range of thorium doping 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25 mole. The present investigations are concerned by confirming that thorium dopings play an important role as stabilizing agent inside internal structure of crystal lattice of Pb1-xThxZrO3 where x = 0.1 mole. XRD-measurements indicated that Thorium dopant substitutes successfully on the A-sites of lead zirconate without damaging the main crystal structure at x = 0.1 mole. Visualization and theoretical investigations were concerned by matching and comparison of bond distances ,torsions on angles of investigated compound to clarify success of thorium doping on the perovskite structure.

This paper focuses on the influence of crystallographic orientation on creep resistance of CMSX-4 nickel-based superalloy. The single-crystal rods of CMSX-4 superalloy were manufactured with the use of the Bridgman method at a withdrawal rate of 3 mm/min. The crystallographic orientation of the rods was determined by the X-ray Ω-scan method with OD-EFG diffractometer and the Laue back-reflection technique. The creep tests were performed at a temperature of 982°C and the value of stress σ = 248 MPa. Microstructural investigation before and after the creep test of CMSX-4 superalloy was performed using a scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the distribution of the values of α angle strongly affects the creep resistance of a single-crystal superalloy

The semiorganic nonlinear optical crystal of amino-carboxyl acid family, L-cystine hydrochloride (LCHCl) was successfully grown from its aqueous solution by the slow evaporation solution growth method. The solubility, metastable zone width and induction period were determined for the first time experimentally and there by the possibility of growing bulk crystals of LCHCl using deionized water as solvent. The induction period was recorded for the different supersaturation ratios (S=1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5), which reveals that the induction period of LCHCl decreases with increase in supersaturation. The nucleation kinetic parameters such as critical free energy, change of volume free energy, critical radius, number of molecules in the critical nucleus and nucleation rate have been evaluated for LCHCl crystals. The interfacial energy values of LCHCl were determined for different supersaturation ratio by means of varying temperatures. The single crystal X-ray diffraction gives the lattice parameters value of the grown crystals. The second harmonic generation efficiency was confirmed by the Kurtz-Perry powder method. The laser damage threshold energy of the grown crystal indicates that grown crystal has excellent resistance to laser radiation also compared with known other nonlinear optical crystals.

The wavelength demultiplexing is a particularly important function in integrated optics and can be realized using photonic crystals. The aim is to extract accurately the wavelengths in a data flux. In this work, we investigate a new topologies of wavelength demultiplexing based on two-dimensional photonic crystals constituted of dielectric rods spread in a square network. The studied demultiplexer is based on optical filters with optimized parameters in order to extract four different wavelengths in the vicinity of frequencies corresponding to communication windows. It was found that the crosstalk between the structure channels of the demultiplexer are in the range of –19.19 and – 44.1 dB and the channel spacing is equal to 0.96 nm. The simulation results presented in this paper are performed and analyzed using the FDTD method.

The technique of X ray topography with the asymmetric reflection geometry of X-ray diffraction presented in this paper as useful tool for structural characterization of materials, particularly, epitaxial thin films and semiconductor multi-layered crystal systems used for the optoelectronic devices. New possibilities of this technique for a layer-by-layer visualization of structural changes in the subsurface crystal layers are demonstrated for semiconductors after various types of surface treatment, such as chemical etching, laser irradiation and ion implantation.

In this paper, self-phase modulation of an optical pulse using a new photonic crystal coupled-cavity waveguide is simulated and analyzed. The structure of the new coupled-cavity waveguide is introduced and its advantage over the previous type of coupled-cavity waveguide is discussed. In order to obtain a high group index over a large bandwidth and benefit from the slow light phenomenon, the group index and group velocity dispersion parameter curves of the guided mode are calculated. Finally, the transient simulation of the structure is performed using a finite-difference time-domain method. The calculated required length of the coupled-cavity waveguide for a maximum phase shift of π is about 31 μm. Spectral broadening of the optical pulse as a result of self-phase modulation is also presented and discussed.

Alkali pyroxenite (and ijolite) xenoliths occur in the Tertiary Loučná-Oberwiesenthal Volcanic Centre associated with the Ohře/Eger Rift. The alkali pyroxenite xenoliths represent fragments of an intracrustal complex with Sr-Nd isotope ratios consistent with mantle sources of HIMU-affinity. The crystal structure of diopside from an alkali pyroxenite xenolith with the formula (...) and the lattice parameters a = 9.773(2), b = 8.886(2), c = 5.308(1) [] and = 105.89(3) [°] was refined to an R-value of 0.025 for 1174 reflections. The mean interatomic distances are: within theMe1-O6 octahedron <2.067> , within theMe2-O8 polyhedron <2.498> . The last value reflects the occupation of this atomic position by significant amounts of Fe2+ and Ti4+. The enlargement determined for the bond length to 1.657 is in accordance with the site population for this position: (Si1.69Al0.31). The molar ratio Fe2+/Fe3+ determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy is equal to 0.786. The AlIV deficiency in T-sites of clinopyroxene of rims is negligible (up to 0.019 a.p.f.u.) restricted to sporadic local electronmicroprobe analyses. The presence of Fe3+ in the T-position of Si- and Al-poor clinopyroxenes was not confirmed by X-ray structural analyses because of its low quantity. Nevertheless, the Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements (isomer shift of 0.36 mm/s) imply that Fe3+ is present only in the Me1-O6 positions.

In this paper, by modifying defects in a photonic crystal lattice, a two-dimensional photonic crystal horn antenna is designed. The photonic crystal used for this purpose is composed of a hexagonal lattice of circular holes in a dielectric slab. The results of this paper allow us to design a photonic crystal antenna capable of separating TE and TM modes. The designed structure has a very simple design that allows low cost fabrication. The structure is numerically simulated using a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Its wide bandwidth, its low loss and the ability to transmit waves at a terahertz frequency range are the antenna’s main advantages. The return loss for the frequency range of 180 to 215 THz is from –6.63 to –28.3 dB. Moreover, a 35 THz bandwidth is obtained for this structure.

Światłowody fotoniczne stanowią nową klasę włókien optycznych, charakteryzujących się wieloma nowymi, niezwykle interesującymi właściwościami. Jedną z nich jest możliwość kształtowania parametrów włókna poprzez modelowanie parametrów jego geometrii na etapie poprzedzającym proces produkcji. W artykule przedstawiono ideę działania światłowodów fotonicznych, ich klasyfikację, budowę oraz własności, które są przydatne głównie pod kątem aplikacji telekomunikacyjnych.
Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are a new class of fiber optics that are characterized by a set of new interesting features. One of them is the possibility of shaping the fiber parameters through modelling its geometry before a production process. The idea of PCFs operation, their structures and features in the light of using them in telecommunication applications are presented as well. Short characteristic of manufacturing methods of PCFs are also presented here.

In the paper the crystal structure of single crystal CMSX-4 blade casts, applied in high pressure turbine of aircraft engines was analyzed. The longitudinal section of blade, cast at withdrawal rate of 3 mm/min was used as a sample. During the conducted research, following X-ray diffraction methods were applied: EFG Ω-scan, Auleytner X-ray topography and analysis of diffraction reflex profile ("rocking curve"). The authors determined crystal orientation in entire blade casts on the basis of set criterion concerning values of angle α - deviation of [001] direction from the direction of cast withdrawal. Conclusions concerning the crystal structure quality of the blade were drawn based on results from three different research methods. Local changes in crystal orientation on the surface of blade cast, also areas with significant structure defect degree and the presence of internal stresses were characterized.

Opis:
In this paper, a photonic crystal-based structure for an all-optical full-subtractor has been proposed. The structure includes six nonlinear resonant rings to transmit the incoming optical waves toward the output ports. Using the different radii for nonlinear rods made the possibility of the dropping operation for different amounts of optical intensities. The nonlinear rods are made of a doped-glass with an optical Kerr coefficient of 10–15 m2/W. To calculate the components of the optical waves throughout the structure, the finite-difference time-domain method has been used. The simulation results prove the correct functionality of the proposed structure. Besides, the maximum rise time of the device is equal to 2 ps. The contrast ratio and the area of the structure are around 8.08 dB and 2790 μm2, respectively.

Opis:
This work describes the suitability of a nano-dimension slot with low index material in the core region to achieve a highly nonlinear, polarization maintaining and dispersion compensating photonic crystal fiber. Our design is composed of a spiral shaped photonic crystal fiber with an elliptical slot made of silicon nanocrystals in the core region. The simulated results show that high nonlinear coefficients at the 1.55 μm wavelength for quasi-TE mode and quasi-TM mode are found to be equal to 1348 and 638 W–1m–1, respectively. The proposed design offers high birefringence up to 0.2503 and large negative dispersion value –1228 ps/nm/km. The proposed fiber has immense potential for realization of all-optical signal processing devices/networks and sensing applications while maintaining its polarization.

Opis:
We report about a novel kind of supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fibre in which the spectral broadening occurs only on the blue side of the pump wavelength. As a consequence a limit to the extent of the supercontinuum is set and thus a way for tailoring the broadened spectrum according to a peculiar application is provided. We present a theoretical explanation along with experimental data which are supported by the results of a set of numerical simulations.

Opis:
This paper presents a soft glass spiral photonic crystal fiber with circular air holes for achieving high birefringence, large nonlinearity and large negative dispersion. The material used here for designing the fiber is soft glass (SF-57). A central defect air hole is being introduced in the core for achieving high birefringence and for different ellipticity ratios the effect of various optical properties of a photonic crystal fiber are studied. The structure proposed has a high birefringence in the order of 10–2, high nonlinearity of 5828 W–1km–1 and high negative dispersion of –1546.6 ps/nm•km at 0.850 μm. A numerical approach based on the finite element method is used for the design and simulation of the structure. Due to the optimization in the cladding air holes, the fiber can be used as polarization maintaining fibers, in dispersion compensation and other nonlinear applications.

In this work, the establishment of a technology for HgI2 purification and crystal growth is described, aiming at a future application of this crystal as a room temperature radiation semiconductor detector. Two methods of crystal growth were studied in the development of this work: (1) physical vapor transport (PVT) and (2) saturated solution from dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) complexes. In order to evaluate the crystals obtained using each of these methods, systematic measurements were carried out for determining the stoichiometry, structure, orientation, surface morphology and impurity of the crystal. The influence of these physicochemical properties of the crystals developed was evaluated in terms of their performance as a radiation detector. The best response to radiation was found for the crystals grown by the PVT technique. Significant improvement in the performance of HgI2 radiation detector was found, purifying the crystal by means of two successive growths by the PVT technique.

Opis:
The electronic structure of a biexciton is discussed while taking into account the detailed band structure of CuCl. The fine structure of the excitonic molecule is clarified with the effective electron-hole exchange effect taken into account beyond the effective mass approximation. The electron-hole exchange interaction mixes the states of opposite parities with respect to the permutation of electrons and holes. Two trial envelope functions, symmetric and antisymmetric under the permutation of two electrons or two holes, were used in the numerical minimization of the ground state energy of the biexciton. The obtained binding energy of the biexciton, as well as, the ratio of the mixing of the trial envelope functions of opposite parities are presented.

Optical characteristics of a new laser crystal Nd:YbVO4 were studied. The optical parameters of a-cut and c-cut Nd:YbVO4 crystals were calculated by the Judd–Ofelt theory. The absorption crosssection of a-cut Nd:YbVO4 crystal was 5.34×10–20 cm2 at 808 nm, while it was 4.20×10–18 cm2 of c-cut Nd:YbVO4 crystal. The properties of energy transfer between Nd and Yb ions in Nd:YbVO4 crystal were discussed. In the fluorescence spectra, a peak at 472 nm appeared, which resulted from the coupling interaction between two Yb ions.

In this work, reflection and transmission of electromagnetic wave by a periodic ferrite-dielectric photonic crystal are investigated theoretically and numerically. The ferrite material is described and its main parameters are given in detail. After the construction of the problem, the reflection and transmission coefficients are derived in a closed form by a transfer matrix method. The reflected, transmitted, and loss powers of the crystal are calculated using these coefficients. In the numerical results the mentioned powers are computed and illustrated as a function of frequency, angle of incidence, dielectric thickness, and applied magnetic field intensity when the damping coefficient changes.

A novel polysaccharide-based hydrogel nanocomposite was prepared using grafting of acrylic acid (AA) on to kappa-carrageenan (κC) by incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotube (MCNT). In fact, MCNTs were used as nano-sized reinforcements in the synthesized nanocomposite. Spectroscopy together with morphology proved relatively strong κC-MCNT interaction. Besides, the swelling behavior of the nanocomposite hydrogel was studied. The results showed that in the presence of MCNTs, the equilibrium swelling capacity was decreased. This can be attributed to cross-linking role and hydrophilicity nature of MCNTs. The adsorption performance of hydrogel nanocomposite was also investigated for the removal of crystal violet (CV) as a cationic dye. The effects of some important parameters such as MCNT concentration, pH and contact time on the uptake of CV solution were studied. Equilibrium adsorption isotherm data of the hydrogel exhibited better fit to the Langmuir than to the Freundlich isotherm model. According to this model, the maximum adsorption capacity of κC-based hydrogel nanocomposite was found to be 118 mg . g–1.

Artykuł zaznajamia z podstawowymi założeniami tego modelu.Wyjściowe założenie dotyczy związku pomiędzy rozumieniem aktualnej sytuacji trudnej,z jaką człowiek zmuszony jest się konfrontować, a uogólnionym rozumieniem własnego życia. Zdaniem autorek doświadczenie dysonansu pomiędzy rozumieniem konkretnej sytuacjii rozumieniem własnego życia stanowi istotne źródło stresu. Operacje poznawcze pozwalające dopasować oba rozumienia prowadzą do jego redukcji. W efekcie, model wyróżnia specyficzny sposób radzenia sobie ze stresem nazwany: radzeniem sobie skoncentrowanym natworzeniu znaczenia (meaning-focused coping, MFC). The aim of this study is to present the Meaning Making Model developed by Crystal Parkand Susan Folkman, which complements Richard Lasarus’ and Susan Folkman’s transactionaltheory of stress. This article familiarises the reader with basic premises of the model. Theinitial assumption concerns the relation between the understanding of the current difficultsituation, which the individual needs to confront, and that person’s general understanding ofhis or her own life. In the opinion of the authors, the dissonance between theof a specific situation and the understanding of life as a whole is a source of substantialstress. On the other hand, cognitive operations enabling adjustment of these two imagesreduce that stress. Consequently, the discussed model identifies a particular method of stressmanagement, namely meaning-focused coping, or MFC. The article outlines the elements ofthis model, as well as conclusions drawn from its premises.

The paper presents optical measurements - spectral loss, OTDR and PMD, temperature cycling and mechanical tests - bending, twist and crush, performed on Yb-doped single mode fibers and small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCF). Several issues related specifically to characterization of such specialty fibers, like measurement errors and artifacts as well as coupling of test instruments to samples are presented. Of particular importance is reliable and low-loss fusion splicing of specialty fibers to standard single mode fibers (SMF), as most commercially available fiber test instruments are fitted with SMF interfaces only.

Dielectric layer photonic crystal filter structures in waveguide are optimized by the quadratic response surface methodology. The optimization model of the filter is established on the basis of the analysis which is conducted with the aid of the response surface methodology. The model is solved using sequential quadratic programming and the optimal parameters are obtained. Examples demonstrate it is effective.

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the astigmatic transformations of Bessel beams at propagation perpendicularly to the c-axis of a uniaxial crystal. The analogy between this transformation and the astigmatic distortion of the plane wave by an inclined axicon is analytically shown. The influence of the polarization direction of radiation relative to the c-axis of a crystal on electric field components of the ordinary and the extraordinary beams is investigated.

The analytical equation of an anomalous hollow vortex beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal orthogonal to the optical axis is derived, and the intensity and phase properties of this beam propagating in the uniaxial crystal are illustrated using numerical examples. The influences of topological charge M and the ratio of refractive index ne/no of a uniaxial crystal on the normalized intensity distribution and phase distribution for anomalous hollow vortex beam are discussed and analyzed in detail.

Some eutectic stripes have been generated in a hexagonal (Zn) - single crystal. The stripes are situated periodically with the constant inter stripes spacing. The eutectic structure in the stripes consists of strengthening inter-metallic compound, Zn16Ti, and (Zn) – solid solution. The rod-like irregular eutectic structure (with branches) appears at low growth rates. The regular lamellar eutectic structure is observed at middle growth rates. The regular rod-like eutectic structure exists exclusively in the stripes at some elevated growth rates. A new thermodynamic criterion is recommended. It suggests that this eutectic regular structure is the winner in a morphological competition for which the minimum entropy production is lower. A competition between the regular rod-like and the regular lamellar eutectic growth is described by means of the proposed criterion. The formation of branches within irregular eutectic structure is referred to the state of marginal stability. A continuous transitions from the marginal stability to the stationary state are confirmed by the continuous transformations of the irregular eutectic structure into the regular one.

Determination of acoustic pressures at the frequency of 1 GHz by means of PVDF hydrophones is not possible due to their limited frequency response. Moreover, the size of their active electrodes is by about 3 orders of magnitude greater than the resolution in the acoustic microscopes at such a high frequency. Therefore the authors solved this problem at first in a microscope with the working frequency of 34 MHz using both the numerical and experimental methods. A numerical procedure of nonlinear propagation and transducer power measurements were applied giving in effect the same quantitative results. Therefore the identical numerical procedure was used for the l GHz microscope working in the reflection mode. Many pressure field quantities of the microscope were shown, e.g. the pressure values, distributions of the first, second, third and fourth pressure harmonics in and outside of the focus, pulse distortions and their spectra, the resolutions achieved etc. The obtained information on nonlinear propagation effects in microscopy was previously lacking.

The influence of growth rate on a morphology, distribution and crystallographic relationship of the intermetallic phase Zn16Ti in Zn-Ti0.1-Cu0.1 single crystals were investigated. The crystals obtained at rates in range of from 1.8mm/h to 16mm/h were tested. In all cases a strong elongation of the Zn16Ti particles along the [11-20] direction is observed. Moreover, it is found that a lamellar phase existing in the crystals develop in range of the growth rate from 6 to 10 mm/h and grows in the f10-11gplanes. In the case of the growth rate of 16mm/h oval-shaped areas of α phase (solid solution of zinc and 0.1wt.% of copper with trace content of titanium) elongated along [10-10] direction and surrounded by needle shaped precipitations are formed in the structure.
W pracy badano wpływ szybkości wzrostu monokryształów Zn-Ti0.1-Cu0.1 na morfologię, rozkład i zależności krystalograficzne fazy międzymetalicznej Zn16Ti. Do testów użyto kryształów wyhodowanych z prędkościami z zakresu od 1.8mm/h do 16mm/h. We wszystkich przypadkach zaobserwowano istnienie cząstek tylko jednej fazy Zn,sub>16Ti, wydłużonych na kierunku [11-20]. Ponadto stwierdzono, że przy szybkości wzrostu z zakresu 6 do 10mm/h, obserwowana faza międzymetaliczna ma postać płytkowa, preferująca płaszczyzny wzrostu f10-11g. W przypadku szybkości wzrostu 16mm/h zaobserwowano tworzenie się fazy iglastej, która otacza obszary czystej osnowy (roztwór stały cynku z dodatkiem 0.1% miedzi oraz niewielką zawartością tytanu) tworzące owale wydłużone na kierunku [10-10].

A high-efficiency thermal tuning filter based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) combined with a low-birefringence liquid crystal (LB LC) cladding layer is presented. Two types of LPFGs were studied and compared: the LPFGs based on a standard telecommunication fiber produced by an electric arc technique, and the LPFGs based on a boron co-doped fiber written by a UV technique. Both types of LPFGs when enhanced with an external LB LC layer exhibit two different temperature sensitivities, which depend on the temperature range of operation. For the LPFGs based on standard telecommunication fiber we can conclude that the presence of the LB LC cladding increases the thermal tuning efficiency by more than one order of magnitude over the value for the LPFGs in air. In the case of the LPFGs based on the boron co-doped fiber we discovered it is possible to obtain either a temperature-independent attenuation band or the attenuation bands with high temperature sensitivities, just by careful choice of the order of the cladding mode and the operating wavelength.

Opis:
The phenomenon of optical birefringence in optical fibers is caused by external factors and stress induced by the manufacturing process. This optical birefringence makes it difficult to apply optical fibers as a polarimetric sensors head. Author of this paper, proposes the application of index guiding photonic crystal fibers because stress values in a fiber core caused by internal and external factors are lower. In this paper investigation results extended in comparison with the previous author’s investigations are presented. This extension relies on investigation of magnetooptic for wavelength 405 nm. On the basis of experimental results optimal work points of optical sensing fibers were determined.

Photonic crystal fibers are a new class of optical fibers. Their artificial crystal-like microstructure results in a number of unusual properties. They can guide light not only through a well-known total internal reflection mechanism but using also photonic bandgap effect. Specimens of Si single crystals with different crystal orientation [100] and [110] were studied by Electro-Ultrasonic Spectroscopy (EUS) and Resonant Ultrasonic Spectroscopy (RUS). A silicon single crystal is an anisotropic crystal, so its properties are different in different directions in the material relative to the crystal orientation. EUS is based on interaction of two signals: an electric AC signal and an ultrasonic signal, which are working on different frequencies. The ultrasonic wave affects the charge carriers' transport in the structures and the intermodulation electrical signal which is created due to the interaction between the ultrasonic wave and charge carriers, is proportional to the density of structural defects. RUS enables to measure natural frequencies of free elastic vibrations of a simply shaped specimen by scanning a selected frequency range including the appropriate resonances of the measured specimens.

Self-organizing nanometer size structures are observed on the surface of CdZnTe crystal irradiated by strongly absorbed Nd:YAG laser irradiation (LR) at intensity range of 4-12 MW/cm2. According to this model the Thermogradient effect has the main role in the interaction process of LR and semiconductors. The surface state of the CdZnTe under the influence of Nd:YAG laser irradiation has been studied. A state has been defined by atom force microscope. The influence of LR on the photoluminescence spectrahas show that at a threshold intensity of LR I=4 MW/cm2 creation of nanometer size structure begins. A graded band gap structure with optical window was formed at the top of nano-hills.

Numerical simulations of tension and shear tests for a polycrystalline, anisotropic material were performed using crystal plasticity theory. The slip was considered here as the main mechanism of plastic deformation. Constitutive equations to describe the elastic-plastic deformation caused by the slip are presented. The generation and meshing of various shapes geometries (cubic and paddy shapes) with randomly-orientated grains by means of open source program NEPER program was shown. The Voronoi tessellation was used in order to include morphological properties of a crystalline material. The selected results of elastic-plastic analyses (stress, strain distributions and the macroscopic stress-strain resulting from homogenization) are presented here. The results obtained show the non-uniform distribution of stress and strain for different grains associated with their crystal orientation. The crystal plasticity finite element modelling of materials subjected to plastic deformation is important for microstructure-based mechanical predictions, as well as for the engineering design and to perform simulations involving not only the change of a material’s shape at a macro level but also the phenomena occurring in material in a micro-scale.

Opis:
Four macroscopically visible B–E (rim) zones of the natural grossular-andradite garnet with Grs58-64subAdr36-42>Sps2composition were crystallographically studied. The applied procedure includes the Rietveld refinements of the crystal structures in a series of six space groups, which were followed by the comparative analysis of the R-values, site occupancy factors, and the bond lengths and angles. It was established that it crystallized in the rhombohedral R-3c space group. Various polyhedral distortions and structural order-disorder variations between the studied zones were also observed, determined and discussed. Therefore, rhombohedral symmetry of the studied grandite could be treated as primary and residual strain as the second cause for its slight optical anisotropy.

The paper presents the properties of a strain sensor, which was made using the micro hole collapse method and operates in the configuration of a Mach-Zehnder modal interferometer with a PM-1550-01 polarization maintaining photonic crystal fibre. The sensor’s transfer curve was determined analytically. Its strain sensitivity, determined from measurements, decreases slightly with increasing wavelength and is in a range from -2.01 to -2.23 pm/με in the wavelength range 1520-1580 nm. Based on the Fourier analysis of the wavelength spectrum of the constructed sensor, the difference of the group refractive indices of the core and the cladding of the photonic crystal fibre was determined, which are in a range from 7.45·10-3 to 1.01·10-2. The temperature sensitivity of the sensor, determined on the basis of measurements performed in a range from 23 to 60°C, is positive and equals 5.9 pm/K.

In this paper we proposed a novel narrowband optical filter for wavelength division multiplexing applications. Due to their high transmission efficiency and very narrowband properties, we used the 5th generation Thue-Morse structure for designing our proposed filter. But novelty of our work is introducing another ID photonic crystal structure as a defect structure into the Thue-Morse structure in order to create pass band inside the photonic band gap of the Thue-Morse structure. All of the simulations and calculations have been done using the transfer matrix method. The most interesting property of this filter is that by increasing the number of the periods of the ordinary 1D photonic crystal, the number of the pass bands increases.

The locally resonant (LR) phononic crystal double panel structure made of a two-dimensional periodic array of a two-component cylindrical LR pillar connected between the upper and lower plates is proposed, and the bandgap properties of the structure are investigated theoretically in this paper. The band structures, displacement fields of eigenmodes and transmission power spectrums of the corresponding 8×8 finite structure are calculated by the finite element method. Numerical results and further analysis demonstrate that a band gap with a low starting frequency and a wide band width is opened by the coupling between dominant vibrations of the pillars and plate modes of the upper and lower plates when the vibration source and the receiver are considered on different sides of the structure. By comparing the band structures and displacement fields of the double panel and those of the single plate with the same parameters, many common characteristics are displayed. Then, the influence of geometrical parameters on the band gap are studied and understood with the help of a simple ‘spring-mass’ model.

Chalcopyrite $(CuFeS_2)$ and pyrite $(FeS_2)$ are commonly associated with each other, and they both belong to semiconductor minerals. The difference in crystal and electronic structures is an important factor for their flotation separation. Using the density functional method (DFT) combined with Hubbard U correction, their crystal and electronic properties are comparatively studied. The calculated results suggest that the use of antiferromagnetic calculations and Hubbard U correction are very important to the accuracy of the chalcopyrite results. Antiferromagnetic calculations combined with a U value of 2.0 eV on chalcopyrite show a band gap of 0.53 eV, which is very consistent with the experimental results of ~0.5 eV. The density of states (DOS) and Mulliken bond population results indicate that stronger hybridization between Fe 3d and S 3p states in chalcopyrite than in pyrite leads to a stronger covalency of Fe-S bonds in chalcopyrite, causing a reduction in the spin magnetic moment (3.5 μB) from the ideal value. In addition, the greater covalency of bonds in chalcopyrite results in greater hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite than pyrite. The DOS results suggest that S has similar electronic properties in pyrite and chalcopyrite. The oxidation states of Fe and Cu ions in chalcopyrite are discussed based on the coordination field theory according to the calculation results, which confirms an oxidation state of $Fe^{3+}Cu^{1+}S_2$.

An analytical formula for the multi-Gaussian Schell model is derived for the beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal orthogonal to the optical axis. The propagation properties of multi-Gaussian Schell model beams in a uniaxial crystal orthogonal to the optical axis is investigated by using the analytical formula. Some results are illustrated by numerical examples related to the propagation properties of multi-Gaussian Schell model beams. It is found that the propagation properties of the multi-Gaussian Schell model beams are very different from the propagation properties in the free space. They are closely related to the initial coherence and the ratio of the extraordinary and ordinary refractive indices. The results provide a way for studying the propagation properties of the multi-Gaussian Schell model beams in the uniaxial crystal orthogonal to the optical axis.

In this article, a circular photonic crystal fiber based chemical sensor has been presented where core region is designed with an array of elliptical holes. The proposed structure is numerically investigated by using a full vectorial finite element method. From the numerical results, it is observed that introducing an array of elliptical holes helps to obtain the high relative sensitivity and realizes a low confinement loss. In addition, the increase in the value of the diameter of holes in the innermost ring enhances the relative sensitivity. Moreover, the increase in the value of the diameter of holes in the outermost ring reduces the confinement loss. In this work, we have considered an industrially valuable chemical ethanol. Simulation results disclose that the highest relative sensitivity of proposed photonic crystal fiber is 29.25% for ethanol and the confinement loss is 7.68 × 10–7 dB/m at the wavelength 1.5 µm.

Możliwość tworzenia twardych powłok charakteryzujących się właściwościami samosmarującymi jest jednym z najważniejszych zagadnień tribologii. Wytwarzanie nowych powłok o architekturze wielowarstwowej czy nanokompozytowej jest powszechne, szczególnie w zastosowaniach do obróbki na sucho lub w podwyższonych temperaturach. W takich przypadkach tworzy się na powierzchni warstwa tlenkowa redukująca tarcie i zużycie. W pracy przedstawiono możliwość opracowania powłok odpowiednich do rodzaju obróbki i obrabianego materiału zapewniając dobre właściwości tribologiczne szczególnie w podwyższonych temperaturach w oparciu o założenia teorii krystalochemicznej.
The possibility of composing hard coatings with self-lubricating features is one of the most important problems in tribology. The production of new coating architectures based on nanocomposite or multilayered morphologies is very popular, particularly for dry or high-temperature machining applications. In these applications, these coatings can lead to the formation of a self-lubricating oxide film that reduce friction and wear. In this paper, the crystal chemical approach is presented to produce low-shear and low friction films. This approach can be applied to designing, the coatings suitable for a type of machining and used material providing good tribological properties especially at elevated temperatures.

Pękanie szkła prawie zawsze zaczyna się od defektów na jego powierzchni. Powierzchnia zewnętrzna klasycznych światłowodów jest osłonięta powłokami ochronnymi chroniącymi ją przed oddziaływaniem zewnętrznych czynników chemicznych i mechanicznych. Włókna fotoniczne, oprócz chronionej zewnętrznej powierzchni szkła mają też powierzchnię wewnętrzną nawet o rząd większą od zewnętrznej. Ta wewnętrzna powierzchnia nie jest narażona na działanie czynników mechanicznych, ale nie jest chroniona przed czynnikami chemicznymi, zwłaszcza przed oddziaływaniem pary wodnej. Hipoteza o mniejszej wytrzymałości mechanicznej światłowodów fotonicznych w porównaniu z klasycznymi została wstępnie potwierdzona w naszych poprzednich pracach [1]. Niniejsza praca prezentuje ilościowy opis wytrzymałości mechanicznej dwóch omawianych rodzajów włókien. Światłowód klasyczny stanowił ślepą próbę dla światłowodu fotonicznego w badaniach wytrzymałości mechanicznej przy użyciu zrywarki Tira Test 2200 przystosowanej do pomiarów wytrzymałości światłowodów. Zarówno histogramy jak i rozkłady Weibulla dla obu włókien ilościowo potwierdzają mniejszą wytrzymałość mechaniczną światłowodów fotonicznych. Dodatkowym potwierdzeniem wyników są faktograficzne badania przełomów światłowodów.
Most of the glass fractures start from flaws on the glass surface. The outer surface of optical fibres is protected from the influence of mechanical and chemical factors by a thin layer of polymer protective coating. Photonic crystal fibres have, besides outer glass surface, inner glass surface of even an order of magnitude greater area. This inner surface is not exposed to mechanical factors. However, it is not protected from chemical agents, most importantly - water vapour. Hypothesis of relatively lower mechanical reliability of photonic crystal fibres in comparison to classical optical fibres was initially confirmed in our previous works [1]. This work con-tains quantitative mechanical reliability description of two kinds of optical fibres mentioned above. The classical and photonic crystal fibre, both manufactured in our laboratory, had their mechanical reliability tested on the Tira Test 2200 tensile testing machine adapted for testing optical fibres. Histograms and Weibull distributions show lower mechanical reliability of photonic crystal fibres. Additional confirmation comes from fractographic studies of fracture surfaces. The presented work is a part of research carried out in PHOSFOS project within the framework of EU Seventh Framework Programme.

The nonlinear optical properties of nematic liquid crystal material have been studied at different concentrations using Z-Scan technique. Experiments are performed using continuous wave (CW) diode solid state laser at 473 nm wavelength and 20 mW power. The nonlinear absorption coefficient β is calculated using open aperture Z-Scan data, while its nonlinear refractive index n2 is measured using the closed aperture Z-Scan data. In this work, six concentrations were prepared for (Di-Cinnamylidene Benzidine), these concentrations were (9×10-5, 8×10-5, 7×10-5, 6×10-5, 5× 10-5 and 4×10-5)M. The optical absorption and transmission spectra for these concentrations were measured by using UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Our results show that the nonlinearity are changed significantly with concentrations, in addition, the optical limiting behavior has been studied. The results confirmed the capability of the sample to be used as optical limiter device.

In this paper, a heterostructure photonic crystal multichannel drop filter based on ring resonators and microcavities is presented. This structure has been made in the form of a two-dimensional square lattice with two regions with refractive indexes of 3.464 and 3.86. The refractive indexes are so chosen as to allow the easy and practical fabrication of the device. The presented heterostructure photonic crystal multichannel drop filter consists of a waveguide, two ring resonators and a microcavity. This microcavity is placed at the end of the bus waveguide. The ring resonators have been installed in two regions with different refractive indexes. These ring resonators act as energy couplers, and at their resonance frequencies, they capture the electromagnetic energy which is transmitted in the bus waveguide. Filter characteristics have been obtained by using the finite difference time domain method. Finally, we will demonstrate that in the optimal structure, at ports B and D (vertical), drop efficiencies close to 90% and 67%, respectively, can be obtained within the third communication window, and at port C (horizontal), an efficiency of almost 80% can be achieved within the second communication window.

In this paper, we propose a compact structure to realize the demultiplexing operation for dense wavelength division multiplexing communication systems using improved shell-type ring resonators in a photonic crystal structure. The cross-section of the structure is 790 μm2 and is desirable for integration based on popular planar technology. To improve power transmission coupling efficiency, we introduce the phase matching condition between ring resonators and waveguides; the results exhibit near 100% transmission efficiency. To obtain a high quality factor, we use interior lower refractive indices spheres inside the ring resonators as the mirrors; a quality factor as high as 15497 is achieved. The average pass bands of channels are near 0.1 nm, and the channel spacing is approximately 0.6 nm. The wavelengths of the demultiplexer are 1549, 1549.7, 1550.3 and 1550.9 nm. The crosstalk is between –14 and –29 dB, and the mean value of the crosstalk is –18.39 dB.

In this work, imidazolium 2,4,5-trinitroimidazolate was obtained from 2,4,5-tri-iodoimidazole in a yield of 48%. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that this compound belongs to the triclinic crystal system with space group P-1. Thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) was performed under a nitrogen atmosphere at heating rates of 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C·min−1. Compound 3 clearly exhibits an exothermic decomposition. The activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (lnA) calculated by the Kissinger method were 113.67 kJ·mol−1 and 25.30 s−1, respectively. The E values obtained by the FWO and KAS methods changed slightly from 103.33 to 113.69 kJ·mol−1 and from 101.52 to 111.97 kJ·mol−1, respectively, which makes us believe that its thermal decomposition can be described using only one reaction model. The Šatava-Šesták method and the compensation effect were used to study the thermal decomposition mechanism of imidazolium 2,4,5-trinitroimidazolate. [Formula] is regarded as the most appropriate thermal decomposition kinetic equation. The impact sensitivity, friction sensitivity, detonation velocity and explosion pressure of imidazolium 2,4,5-trinitroimidazolate were 43 cm, 46%, 7056.9 m·s−1 and 1.9703 · 1010 Pa (ρ = 1.538 g·cm−3), respectively. Imidazolium 2,4,5-trinitroimidazolate is incompatible with RDX, HMX, TKX-50 and CL-20.

Nuclear and magnetic properties of the $ScFe_{4}Al_{8}$ single crystal were found to exhibit unparalleled complexity of nuclear and magnetic structures. Our previous neutron measurements revealed presence of two modulation vectors, both along [ε, ε, 0], however with different critical temperatures. Recent experiments forced us to revise our knowledge of the structural ordering in the sample. So far, the crystal structure of this alloy, being of $ThMn_{12}$-type, has never been questioned.

We propose a design of series-connected one-dimensional photonic crystal nanofiber cavity sensor (1-D PC-NCS) and one-dimensional photonic crystal nanofiber bandgap filter (1-D PC-NBF). The proposed structure can get a single air mode for refractive index sensing with its extinction ratio of 58.64 dB. It filters out the high order mode and reduces the interaction between signals. By 3D FDTD, the calculated sensitivity is 848.18 nm/RIU (RIU – refractive index unit). Compared with general silicon on-chip nanobeam cavity, the sensitivity is increased by eight times. The additional 1-D PC-NBF will not change the sensitivity and the position of the resonance wavelength. Therefore, the new design we propose addresses the issue of crosstalk, and can be applied to ultra-high sensitivity index-based gas sensing and biosensing without the need for complicated coupling systems.

In this paper, we propose a new structure to design a 4-channel optical demultiplexer using a modified Y-branch structure with 4 hexagonal photonic crystal ring resonators. A new optical filter with a high transfer coefficient and quality factor has been introduced and designed in the present paper using a hexagonal photonic crystal ring resonator, which has then been used to design a 4-channel optical demultiplexer. The proposed demultiplexer has an average transfer coefficient of 95.5% and a high quality factor of 4164.6. It also has a channel spacing of 2.75 nm and a spectral width of 0.4 nm. The maximum and minimum crosstalk values of the channels are –10.5 and –36.5 dB, respectively. To study the photonic band structure, the plane wave expansion method has been used and the finite-difference time-domain method has also been used to analyze the optical behavior of the structure.

In this paper, we have reported a theoretical study of the mode conversion in two-dimensional magneto-photonic crystal waveguide. The structure is formed by a triangular lattice of air holes embedded in a composite matrix SiO2/ZrO2 or SiO2/TiO2. These new magneto-optical materials are developed by organic-inorganic sol-gel process and doped with ferrite of cobalt nanoparticles (CoFe2O4). The modal birefringence and conversion output have been calculated by varying, respectively, the film thickness and the magnetic nanoparticles concentration. The obtained results show an enhancement in the TE-TM mode conversion. Thus, when the amount of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles reaches 39% into sol-gel matrix, the efficiency can reach 95% which proves that such structures have very promising potential for creating integrated optical isolators.

Opis:
New trends of construction of information displays used in cockpits of different modern aircrafts are presented. The main attention is paid to the liquid crystal displays as the most commonly used nowadays and still of interest in the future. Other technologies of flat information panels interesting for the future applications are discussed. The results of theoretical works performed at the Institute of Applied Physics MUT and an example of integrated display for gliders designed there are also given.
Przedstawiono nowe kierunki konstrukcji wyświetlaczy informacyjnych do kokpitów współczesnych samolotów. Główny nacisk położono na wyświetlacze ciekłokrystaliczne jako najbardziej obecnie rozpowszechnione i perspektywiczne. Przedyskutowano inne technologie płaskich ekranów, interesujące z punktu widzenia przyszłych zastosowań. Przedstawiono również wyniki prac teoretycznych oraz przykład zintegrowanego wyświetlacza dla szybowca skonstruowanego w Instytucie Fizyki Technicznej WAT.

Orientational elastic constant k$\text{}_{11}$, k$\text{}_{33}$ and k$\text{}_{13}$ of liquid crystals are determined by a new way. Liquid crystalline waveguide is applied to measure refractive index profile across the waveguide layer. Results of the measurements allow one to find local director field within the liquid crystalline layer. Director field is applied to transform the Frank-Oseen equations into a form of an overdetermined algebraic system of equations with elastic constants as unknown variables. A solution of those equations has been found by the orthogonal decomposition method. Elastic constants for nematic mixture, W602, and main component of it, 6CHBT (4-trans-4-n-hexyl-cyclohexyl-isothiocyanatobenzene), have been obtained as well as anchoring energy values

Optical logic gates are very important structures required for creating all-optical digital signal processing systems. Optical XOR and XNOR gates can be used for designing optical adders and optical comparators, respectively. In this paper we proposed a novel structure which can be used for simultaneous implementation of optical XOR and XNOR logic gates. The proposed structure was designed using a nonlinear photonic crystal ring resonator. The delay time for XOR and XNOR gates are 1.7 and 3 ps, respectively.

The crystal structure and paramagnetism in the pyrazinamide containing copper(II) 2-nitrobenzoate single crystal were investigated using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance techniques. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the complex crystallizes in monoclinic system having two molecules in the unit cell. After using curve fitting method to the electron paramagnetic resonance spectra, anisotropic g and hyperfine A tensors were obtained. The local symmetry, spin Hamiltonian parameters, and molecular bonding coefficients of the paramagnetic Cu²⁺ ion were determined. Perturbation approach was applied to the spin Hamiltonian to calculate the g and A values.

W publikacji prezentowana jest metoda wyznaczania współczynnika załamania w nieprzewodzących ciekłokrystalicznych komórkach hybrydowych. Wcześniej wykazano, że taka komórka jest nowym rozwiązaniem dla fotoniki [1,2]. Opisywana metoda obejmuje modele fizyczne i matematyczne zjawisk istotnych dla obserwowanego w tych urządzeniach photorefractive-like effect. W oparciu o prezentowaną metodę powstał symulator komórki hybrydowej. Umożliwia on projektowanie komórek tego typu i pozwala na badanie, jak zaprojektowane przez użytkownika urządzenie zmienia swoje właściwości optyczne pod wpływem pola sterującego i oświetlenia. W artykule opisano główne założenia modeli matematycznych stosowanych w opisywanej metodzie. Ponadto przedstawiono algorytmy pozwalające uzyskać rozwiązanie numeryczne proponowanych modeli.
In the publication, we present a method for determining the refractive index of the nonconductive liquid crystal hybrid cell. We have previously shown that this cell is a new solution for photonics [1, 2]. This method involves physical and mathematical models of the phenomena relevant to that observed in these devices photorefractive-like effect. Based on the presented method was established hybrid cell simulator. This simulator enables the design of cells of this type and allows the study as designed by the user device changes its optical properties under the control field and lighting. In this paper we describe the main assumptions of the mathematical models used in the described method. In addition, we present algorithms in order to obtain a numerical solution proposed models.

The article presents a study of a hybrid structure based on the combination of a tapered optical fibre and gold nanoparticles dispersed in a liquid crystal material. Sensitivity to changes of the refractive index of the environment in which the structure is located, as well as the possibility of changing the refractive index of liquid crystals by external factors, such as temperature and electric field, were investigated. Electro- and thermally-induced changes of the refractive index of a liquid crystal through the rotation of a molecule director, which cause changes in the light propagated in a tapered optical fibre, were described. The most important issue in the article is to determine the influence of doping a liquid crystal with gold nanoparticles the concentration of which varies between 0.1 and 0.3 wt.%. The paper presents transmission measurements in a wide optical range depending on voltage, temperature, and frequency changes. Additionally, time courses of the obtained signal were measured. The study shows that the appropriate selection of nanoparticle concentration has a huge impact on the optical wave propagation. The experimental results show that the optical changes obtained for the investigated hybrid structure prefer it for use as an electrooptical switcher, filter, or sensor.

In this paper, a microstructured optical fiber with dual core was proposed which is known as photonic crystal fiber. Specific optical properties of a dual-core photonic crystal fiber were used to obtain high birefringence, small beat length, flattened dispersion, for different values of structural parameters varied over a wide range of wavelength and analyzed for application such as temperature and pressure sensors. The sensitivity of the temperature sensor is calculated as 20 pm/°C for 6 cm fiber, the sensitivity of the pressure sensor for a range from 0 to 1000 kPa is calculated as –10.5 nm/MPa.

This work suggests a brand-new 1*4 two-dimensional demultiplexer design based on multicore photonic crystal fiber. Numerical models show that the optical signals can be separated in a photonic crystal fiber construction using optical signals with wavelengths of 0.85, 1.1, 1.19, and 1.35 μm injected on the center core and separated into four cores. The innovative design switches different air-hole positions using pure silica layers throughout the length of the fiber to regulate the direction of light transmission between layers. Wavelength demultiplexers are essential parts of optical systemic communications. They serve as a data distributor and can use a single input to produce multiple outputs. The background material is frequently natural silica, and air holes can be found anywhere throughout the length of the fiber as the low-index components. The simulation results showed that after a 6 mm light propagation, the four-channel demux can start to demultiplex.

PCFs (Photonic Crystal Fibers) with ‘T’ – shaped core have been proposed in this paper. ‘T’ –shaped core PCF structures have been analyzed using two different background materials: silica and lead silicate. A total of 360° rotation at an interval of 90° has been introduced in the design of PCF structures. PCF structures A, B, C and D with rotation of 0°, 90°, 180° and 270° have silica as wafer. Similarly PCF structures E, F, G and H with similar rotation have lead silicate as background material. Numerical investigations shows structures ‘D’, ‘F’, ‘G’ and ‘H’ to have anomalous dispersion. PCF structures ‘F’, ‘G’, and ‘H’ have reported birefringence of the order of 10⁻². Besides, other PCF structures report birefringence of the order of 10⁻³. Ultra low confinement loss has been observed in all the investigated PCF structures. Moreover, splice loss observed by the structure is very low. Large mode area has been shown by all the designed PCF structures.

Aim of the present research was to apply a solid state reaction route to fabricate Aurivillius-type ceramics described with the formula Bi6Fe2Ti3O18 (BFTO) and reveal the influence of processing conditions on its crystal structure. Pressureless sintering in ambient air was employed and the sintering temperatures were 850 and 1080 °C. It was found that the fabricated BFTO ceramics were multiphase ones. They consisted of two Bim+1Fem-3Ti3O3m+3 phases, namely the phase with m=5 (i.e. the stoichiometric phase) and m=4 (i.e. the phase with a reduced number of layers in the slab). Detailed X-ray diffraction patterns analysis showed that both phases adopted the same orthorhombic structure described with Fmm2 (42) space group. The ratio of weight fractions of the constituent phases (m=5): (m=4) was ~30:70.

This paper presents results of flow boiling heat transfer in two parallel asymmetrically heated vertical minichannels. The heating element for Fluorinert FC-72 flowing in the minichannels was a thin foil with an enhanced surface on the side in contact with the fluid. The channels were observed from both sides through glass panes. Two of the panes allowed us to observe the two phase flow patterns on the enhanced surface of the foil, while the other two panes were used for simultaneous measurement of temperature on the smooth side of the foil. The temperature was measured by applying two contactless methods. One was liquid crystal thermography (LCT), which required treating the foil surface with thermochromic liquid crystals (TLCs), and the other was infrared thermography (IRT), which required coating the foil surface with black paint. Calculations were performed on the basis ofa one-dimensional model to determine the heat transfer coefficient at the foil-fluid interface from the Robin boundary condition. The experimental results were graphically represented as the foil temperature and the heat transfer coefficient against the distance from the minichannel inlet and as LCT and IRT images obtained for saturated boiling.

Electronic-and-optical properties of Rb2ZnCl4 crystal have been studied using the theoretical and experimental methods. First principles calculations of the electronic structure and optical properties using the density functional theory have been performed on the relaxed and uniaxially compressed (1 GPa) Rb2ZnCl4 crystal. The refractive indices of Rb2ZnCl4 have been measured in the spectral range of wavelength 300 nm to 750 nm for three principal uniaxial compression stresses (0.02 GPa) at room temperature. Ab initio calculations and analysis have revealed that the observed uniaxial pressure changes of the refractive indices of Rb2ZnCl4 are caused mainly by the corresponding changes of the crystal unit cell dimensions. The unit cell electronic polarizability of the crystal remains approximately unchanged.
Zbadano właściwości elektronowo-optyczne kryształów Rb2ZnCl4 metodami teoretyczną i doświadczalną. Wykonano obliczenia z pierwszych zasad (ab initio) struktury elektronowej i właściwości optycznych na bazie teorii funkcjonału gęstości zrelaksowanych i jednoosiowo ściśniętych (1 GPa) kryształów. Zostały pomierzone współczynniki załamania Rb2ZnCl4 w przedziale długości fal światła 300 nm do 750 nm dla trzech głównych krystalograficznych kierunków ściskania (0.02 GPa) przy temperaturze pokojowej. Obliczenia ab initio i analiza danych ujawniły, że obserwowane baryczne zmiany współczynników załamania Rb2ZnCl4 są spowodowane głównie odpowiednimi zmianami rozmiarów komórki elementarnej kryształu. Przy tym, polaryzowalność elektronowa komórki kryształu pozostaję się prawie niezmienną.

The complementary measurements of the dielectric dispersion in ferroelectric phase of glycine phosphite crystal at the frequency range of 200 Hz - 1 MHz have been carried out. The analysis of the dielectric spectra of the low frequency relaxation process showed that it can be fitted by two Debye-type relaxators. The activation energy of the both processes has been calculated. The observed behaviour of the relaxators suggests that they are connected with a domain structure; one with the growth of the nuclei whereas the second with the domain wall movement.

This paper proposes and demonstrates a novel scheme of a two-channel-output ultra-wideband monocycle pulse generator consisting of a 100 m dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber and two optical bandpass filters. Based on the cross-phase modulation effect in a dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, two polarity-reversed ultra-wideband monocycle pulses simultaneously output from two different channels are successfully achieved by appropriately locating the probe wavelength at the left linear slope and the right linear slope of the two optical bandpass filters transmission spectra, respectively. The full width at half-maximum and a fractional bandwidth of 24 ps and 260% for a positive pulse, 24 ps and 251% for a negative pulse are obtained. Moreover, the influences of input signal powers, the polarization misalignment between the data light and the continuous wave probe light, and probe wavelength variation on the double output ultra-wideband signals quality are also investigated. The results show that the system has some tolerance to both the input signal power fluctuation and the slight polarization mismatch and even can efficiently operate with a widely tunable wavelength range. This makes it very attractive for engineering applications in future multiuser ultra-wideband-over-fiber communication systems.

A new design of a guiding-index photonic crystal fiber which possesses a beam shaping effect and flexible control of dispersion has been proposed in this paper. It can shape a Gaussian beam into a circular hollow beam with certain dimension, which can be used in optical communication systems with a Cassegrain antenna to improve transmission efficiency by avoiding the loss of energy caused by the subreflector center reflection. In addition, its dispersion and confinement loss can be changed in a broad range by slightly adjusting structural parameters under condition that the hollow beam dimension remains about the same. Fairly practical properties, zero dispersion or flattened dispersion, can be obtained when structural parameters are set appropriately. A series of models with different parameters are analyzed and compared. Results of numerical simulation show that the ultra-low dispersion of 1.802 ps/km/nm can be obtained when λ = 1.31 μm. Several modest design parameters are given as well.

A polarization photonic crystal fiber based on surface plasmon resonance is proposed in this paper. The photonic crystal fiber with gold coated holes is studied through using the finite element method. The impacts of structural parameters on the resonance characteristics are discussed. Numerical simulations show that the resonance wavelength can be modulated by changing the parameters of the air holes and thickness of gold layer. At the resonance wavelength 1550 nm, the loss is 3.8045 dB/m in x-polarization and the loss is 28464 dB/m in y-polarization by adjusting the size of the gold-coated holes and the place of air holes. Results show that the loss of y-polarized mode is much larger than the loss of x-polarized mode. The y-polarized mode is suppressed, and only x-polarized mode can be guided at the resonance wavelength of y-polarized mode. The results indicate that the mode polarized in one direction can be filtered out selectively by adjusting the diameter of air holes, and the filtering effect in a communication band is achieved.

In this study, the oblique incident of the electromagnetic waves with frequencies lower than plasma frequency in one dimensional ternary plasma photonic crystal has been investigated. The unit cell of crystal contains a plasma layer that is embedded in two different dielectric layers. Using the wave equation, Bloch theory, and boundary condition, the dispersion relation, the group velocity and the reflection relation of the structure have been obtained. Numerical results are presented in the form of dispersion curves. The dependence of photonic band gap characteristics on plasma frequency is discussed. One attempt has been made to show how the photonic band gap characteristic of a particular structure changes when the dielectric material of the unit cell is replaced by other dielectric materials or when the incident angle of the electromagnetic wave is changed. Results show that plasma layer characteristics has a significant effect on band gaps and wave propagation characteristics; also the results show that the proposed multi-layered structure can act as a tunable photonic crystal which can be controlled by the external parameters.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was conducted for a DNB (1,3-dinitrobenzene) crystal, a ε-CL-20 (2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane) crystal, a CL-20/DNB co-crystal and a CL-20/DNB composite. From the calculated maximum bond length (Lmax) of the N−NO2 trigger bond, the cohesive energy density (CED) and the binding energy (Ebind), it was found that the CL-20/DNB co-crystal is more insensitive than its composite. Its thermal stability is also better than that of its composite. The pair correlation function (PCF) analysis method was applied to investigate the interfaces between different molecular layers in the CL-20/DNB co-crystal, and in the composite. Additionally, the calculated mechanical data showed that the moduli of the CL-20/DNB co-crystal and its composite are smaller and their elastic elongation and ductility are better than those of the ε-CL-20 and DNB crystals.

The new quaternary stannides, TbCo0.29Li0.05Sn2 and TbCu0.25Li0.09Sn2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic CeNiSi2 structure type with space group Cmcm. The four independent 4c atom positions (m2m site symmetry), three are fully occupied by individual atoms (two by Sn and one by Tb atoms) and the fourth is occupied by Li and transition metals Co or Cu atoms with a statistical distribution. The Tb coordination polyhedron is a 21-vertex pseudo-Frank–Kasper polyhedron. One Sn atom is enclosed in a tricapped trigonal prism, the second Sn atom is in a cuboctahedron and the statistically distributed (Li,Co or Cu) site is in a tetragonal antiprism with one added atom. Electronic structure calculations were used for the elucidation of reasons for and the ability of mutual substitution of lithium and transition metals. Positive charge density was observed around the rare earth atom and the Li and transition metal atoms, the negative charge density in the proximity of the Sn atoms.
