In the world weather derivatives play an important role in securing companies from energy industry. That industry was a pioneer in the use of weather derivatives and their creation was a natural response to the demand for this type of protection against weather risk. The article aims are to answer the question whether the energy industry companies in Poland are also vulnerable to the negative impact of not catastrophic weather risk and how a hedge instrument, diminishing the effects of prevailing weather conditions and securing the revenues of the industry might look like-. Owing to the analysis of the obtained results, we can conclude that weather conditions have a significant impact on the revenues of power companies. It is therefore reasonable to consider the introduction of weather derivatives on the Polish market. This article presents theoretical constructs of weather derivatives on the stock market and outside it.

The climate-weather change process for the critical infrastructure operating area is considered and its states are introduced. The semi-Markov process is used to construct a general probabilistic model of the climate-weather change process for the critical infrastructure operating area. To build this model the vector of probabilities of the climate-weather change process staying at the initials climate-weather states, the matrix of probabilities of the climate-weather change process transitions between the climate-weather states, the matrix of conditional distribution functions and the matrix of conditional density functions of the climate-weather change process conditional sojourn times at the climate-weather states are defined. To describe the climate-weather change process conditional sojourn times at the particular climate-weather states the uniform distribution, the triangular distribution, the double trapezium distribution, the quasi-trapezium distribution, the exponential distribution, the Weibull distribution, the chimney distribution and the Gamma distribution are suggested and introduced.

The paper presents a multi-objective deterministic method of weather routing for sailing vessels. Depending on a particular purpose of sailboat weather routing, the presented method makes it possible to customize the criteria and constraints so as to fit a particular user’s needs. Apart from a typical shortest time criterion, safety and comfort can also be taken into account. Additionally, the method supports dynamic weather data: in its present version short-term, mid-term and long-term term weather forecasts are used during optimization process. In the paper the multi-objective optimization problem is first defined and analysed. Following this, the proposed method solving this problem is described in detail. The method has been implemented as an online SailAssistance application. Some representative examples solutions are presented, emphasizing the effects of applying different criteria or different values of customized parameters.

Geography is traditionally perceived as a discipline of science dealing with the spatial diversity of the outer shell of the earth, and the relations between its components and human activity (Tkocz, 2005). The identification of relations and correlations, constructing hypotheses and, finally, observations and measurements are among the most important skills of applying knowledge in practice (Regulation of the Ministry of Education of 14 February 2017 on the core curriculum). In a world of dynamic acquisition of factual knowledge, practical skills are gaining in importance, together with the ability to select information and search for it. Connectivity is the answer to contemporary trends in education, viewed as the theories of education, perceiving knowledge as a set of network connections between objects. In this perspective, learning is about establishing and developing such connections (Downes, 2017). This idea promotes abstaining from fact-based knowledge or even concept development and to look for facts, collect and process them. As part of “Łejery! What kind of weather is this?!” carried out by the school (project organizer), Faculty of Geographic and Geological Sciences (the content-related sponsor) and the Enea company (sponsor of the Enea Academy of Talents project), a self-organising map was created in accordance with the theory of constructivism. By means of measurements and exchanging information, the students can empirically and single-handedly acquire their own knowledge and practical skills.

One way to determine in a comprehensive manner the impact of selected weather factors on the human body is biothermal-meteorological classification of weather. In this paper the typology by K. Błażejczyk was used. On the basis of this typology there were 169 different states of weather separated occurring in the years 1976–2010 on IMGW synoptic station in Lublin-Radawiec. In this period the type which occurred with the highest frequency was cold weather. That frequency reached on average 33% during the year, with maximum in November and February (over 45% of days). The type comfortable weather occurred in 11% of days during the year, with maximum during autumn (October, 23%) and spring (April, 22%). Very hot weather, with highest values of thermal sensations has occurred with frequency of 23% in the analyzed years. It was noted since May to September, mainly in July and August.
Jednym ze sposobów określenia w kompleksowy sposób wpływu wybranych czynników pogodowych na organizm człowieka jest biotermiczno-meteorologiczna klasyfikacja pogody. W pracy wykorzystano w tym celu typologię K. Błażejczyka. Na jej podstawie wyróżniono 169 różnych rodzajów wydzieleń stanów pogody występujących w okresie 1976-2010 na stacji IMGW w Lublinie Radawcu. W wieloleciu tym najczęściej pojawiającym się typem była pogoda chłodna. Występowała ona średnio w roku z częstością 33%, najczęściej w listopadzie i lutym (powyżej 45% dni). Pogoda o typie komfortowym pojawiała się w 11% dni w roku, głownie jesienią (październik, 23%) i wiosną (kwiecień, 22%). Pogoda bardzo gorąca, z najwyższymi wartościami odczuć cieplnych, występowała z częstością 23% w analizowanym okresie. Notowano ją od maja do września, głównie w lipcu i sierpniu.

High temporal and spatial resolution of radar measurements enables to continuously observe dynamically evolving meteorological phenomena. Three-dimensional (3D) weather radar reflectivity data assimilated into the numerical weather prediction model has the potential to improve initial description of the atmospheric model state. The paper is concentrated on the development of radar reflectivity assimilation technique into COAMPS mesoscale model using an Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) type assimilation schemes available in Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART) programming environment. Before weather radar data enter into the assimilation system, the measurement errors are eliminated through quality control procedures. At first artifacts associated with non-meteorological errors are removed using the algorithms based on analysis of reflectivity field pattern. Then procedures for correction of the reflectivity data are employed, especially due to radar beam blockage and attenuation in rain. Each of the correction algorithms is connected with generation of the data quality characteristic expressed quantitatively by so called quality index (QI). In order to avoid transformation of data uncertainty into assimilation scheme only the radar gates successfully verified by means of the quality algorithms were employed in the assimilation. The proposed methodology has been applied to simulate selected intense precipitation events in Poland in May and August 2010.

The paper is focused on adaptation of an isochrones method necessary for application to a weather routing system with evolutionary approach. Authors propose an adaptation of the isochrones method with area partitioning assuring that the route found by the adopted method would not cross land. In result, when applied to a weather routing system with evolutionary approach, this proposal facilitates creation of initial population, resulting with routes of reduced collision risk and low costs of passage.

The paper presents a multi-objective method, which optimises the route of a sailboat. The presented method makes use of an evolutionary multi-objective (EMO) algorithm, which performs the optimisation according to three objective functions: total passage time, a sum of all course alterations made during the voyage and the average angle of heel. The last two of the objective functions reflect the navigator’s and passenger’s comfort, which may decrease with multiple turns or when experiencing an excessive heel angle for a long time. The optimisation process takes into account static bathymetry-related constraints as well as dynamic constraints related to the sailboat’s safety in changing wind and wave conditions. The method makes use of all of the above and finally returns an approximated Pareto set containing non-dominated solutions to the optimisation problem. The developed method has been implemented as a simulation application. The paper includes selected simulation results followed by their discussion.

Weather risk has an increasing impact on the functioning of today’s enterprises. To manage weather risk effectively companies may use weather derivatives. This article attempts to classify entities that could be used as part of weather risk management derivatives, especially weather derivatives. At the outset it presents the essence of weather risk, defining and classifyingthis phenomenon. This is followed by a description of those entities on which the weather has a significant effect. Next weather derivatives are presented, starting with the construction of the instrument, through the history of weather derivatives on the world market, and ending with a reflection on the applicability of weather derivatives in a Polish context.
Ryzyko pogodowe ma coraz większy wpływ na funkcjonowanie współczesnych przedsiębiorstw. Aby skutecznie zarządzać ryzykiem pogodowym, przedsiębiorstwa mogą korzystać z pogodowych instrumentów pochodnych. W artykule podjęto próbę klasyfikacji podmiotów, które mogłyby wykorzystać w ramach procesu zarządzania ryzykiem pogodowym instrumenty pochodne, a szczególnie opcje pogodowe. Na wstępie przedstawiono istotę ryzyka pogodowego, formułując jego definicję oraz klasyfikując to zjawisko. Następnie dokonano wyszczególnienia tych podmiotów, na które pogoda wpływa w sposób istotny. Dalej zaprezentowano opcję pogodową, zaczynając od konstrukcji tego instrumentu, poprzez historię jego funkcjonowania na rynku światowym, a kończąc na refleksjach na temat możliwości zastosowania opcji pogodowych w polskich realiach.

Problematyka zmian klimatu oraz będących konsekwencją tych zmian ekstremalnych zjawisk pogodowych są obecnie tematem wielu badań a także działań rządów w zakresie przeciwdziałania zachodzącym zjawiskom. Obszary wiejskie i produkcja odbywająca się na tych terenach w Polsce uzależniona jest głównie od naturalnych uwarunkowań pogodowych, to powoduje iż w rolnicy ponoszą często duże straty finansowe z powodu występowania ekstremalnych zjawisk pogodowych. Pakiety ubezpieczeniowe oferowane prze firmy są kosztowne, więc rolnicy korzystają z nich cząstkowo albo wcale. W artykule podjęto temat strat finansowych, które miały miejsce w latach 2010-2014 na terenie 60 gmin województwa warmińsko-mazurskiego. W stosunku do każdej gminy zgromadzono 20 geoinformacji opisujących uwarunkowania przestrzenne, środowiskowe oraz ekonomiczne (straty finansowe). Dzięki wykorzystaniu metody regresji kroczącej wstecznej oraz analizy korelacji uzyskano cztery zmienne niezależne wpływające na wielkość powstałych strat. Należą do nich: powierzchnia, na której wystąpiły straty, powierzchnia która jest wykorzystywana rolniczo - z podziałem na grunty orne oraz łąki i pastwiska oraz wskaźnik warunków wodnych. Ten ostatni czynnik mówi o zdolności gleby do akumulacji wody, a więc ma istotne znaczenie w okresach małej ilości wód opadowych. Przeprowadzone badania pogłębiają problematykę związaną z zachodzącymi zmianami klimatycznymi, które na ternach wiejskich Polski są problematyką dopiero poruszaną.
The issue of climate change and as a consequence of these changes in extreme weather events are currently the subject of many studies and actions of governments in dealing with phenomena occurring. Rural areas and production takes place in these areas in Poland depends mainly on natural weather conditions, it causes that the farmers are often large financial losses because of extreme weather. Insurance packages offered by the company are expensive, so farmers use them piecemeal, or not at all. The article about the financial losses that took place in 2010-2014 in the 60 municipalities of the Warmia and Mazur Region. In relation to each municipality collected 20 geo-information describing spatial conditions, environmental and economic (financial losses). By using the method of moving backward regression and correlation analysis were obtained four independent variables affecting the size of the resulting losses. These include: surface on which the loss occurred, the surface of which is used for agriculture - divided on plowed land and meadows and pastures, and the rate of water conditions. Last variable speaks of the capacity of soil to accumulate water, thus is important in times of small amounts of rainwater. The study exacerbate the problems associated with ongoing climate change, which in rural areas Polish issues are very young.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie odpowiedniego instrumentu, który umożliwia ograniczenie ryzyka pogodowego o charakterze niekatastroficznym. Tekst składa się z dwóch części. Pierwsza część – ma charakter teoretyczny, a zarazem wprowadzający w zagadnienie, stanowiące przedmiot analiz w części drugiej. Skupiono się w niej na aspektach definicyjnych i klasyfikacjach ryzyka pogodowego oraz wpływie niekorzystnych warunków pogodowych na poszczególne branże, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem turystyki. W drugiej części zaprezentowano opis działania derywatów pogodowych, jako szczególnego rodzaju instrumentów pochodnych oraz zamieszczono praktyczne przykłady z ich zastosowania w branży turystycznej, w celu ukazania, że fizyczna kontrola ryzyka pogodowego jest możliwa. W konkluzji sformułowano kilka istotnych problemów badawczych wymagających badań i studiów w kontekście zarządzania ryzykiem pogodowym w branży turystycznej regionu łódzkiego.
The purpose of this article is to identify the appropriate instruments, which can reduce the risk of noncatastrophic weather changes. The text consists of two parts. The first part is theoretical, and introduces the issue of weather derivatives. It focuses on the aspects of the definitional and classification of weather risk and the effects of adverse weather conditions in the various sectors, with particular emphasis on tourism. The second part presents the description of weather derivatives as a special kind of derivative instruments, and provides practical examples of its application in the tourism industry, in order to show that the physical control of weather risk is possible. In conclusion, several important research problems that require research and study in the context of weather risk management in the tourism industry of the region of Lodz are formulated.

W pracy przedstawiono strukturę stanów pogody według klasyfikacji J. Ferdynusa opracowaną dla Calypsobyen w rejonie Bellsundu. Dane pomiarowe pochodzą z sezonów letnich pięciu wypraw UMCS na Spitsbergen z lat 2006-2009 i 2011. Do analizy wykorzystano dane z okresu od 1 lipca do 31 sierpnia. Łącznie przeanalizowano dane z 310 dni (po 62 dni z każdego roku). Przeprowadzona analiza wykazuje, że rejon Bell-sundu cechuje się w sezonie letnim względną jednorodnością grup pogód. Wystąpiły tylko 2 grupy oraz 6 podgrup. W pięciu badanych sezonach wystąpiło tylko 10 wspólnych typów pogód.
Region of Wedel Jarlsberg Land (western coast of Spitsbergen) has been the subject of a complex study carried out by the participants of Geographical Expeditions by the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin for more than 25 years. The research into the meteorological conditions was initiated in 1986. The station was located on Calypsostranda, a flat sea terrace, at the height of about 23 m a.s.l., at a distance of 200 m from Bellsund Fjord and 2 km from the Scott Glacier. Dry lichen-moss tundra forms substrate of the station. This paper is trying to define the structure of weather states described by J. Ferdynus in the region of Calypsobyen. For this analysis there have been chosen four meteorological elements: air temperature, cloudiness, precipitation and wind. Material used in this paper has been taken from summer seasons (July and August) of 2006-2009 and 2011. We used meteorological data from the 1st of July to 31st of August from each year – total 310 days. Those seasons were classified into groups, subgroups, types of weather and their frequency. Bellsund region is characterized by relatively homogeneous frequencies of occurring weather groups. In analyzed period there have been noticed only 2 weather groups – T7 and T8 and 6 subgroups – 71, 72, 73, 81, 82, 83. In summer seasons 2006-2009 and 2011mostly often noticed weather types were 7301 (15.2%) and 7312 (10.3%).

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of different cultivars and weather conditions on the content of minerals: K, Na, Mg, Ca, Zn, Cu, Mn and Fe in linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.). In total, 11 common flax cultivars of four utility types were analysed. Field experiments were carried out in Poznań (Poland) between 2003 and 2005 and between 2008 and 2014. The study showed that the chemical composition of flax seeds was determined by differences between cultivars, the weather conditions and the cultivar-year interactions. The seeds of the Alba cultivar, representing the fibre type, had the highest content of all the elements measured in our study. The results demonstrated that none of the four types of utility cultivars was distinguished by a particularly high content of minerals in the seeds. Hence, the seeds of the flax cultivars of all the types used in our study may be used as sources of valuable macro- and microelements. The content of some minerals in the seeds of different flax cultivars was significantly correlated with the average temperatures and the average rainfall during the research period. The concentrations of calcium and zinc were not correlated with the weather conditions. The content of four elements (Na, Mg, Cu, Fe) was negatively correlated with temperature, whereas the content of potassium was positively correlated with this factor. Concentrations of three elements (K, Na, Fe) were negatively correlated with rainfall, whereas the concentration of manganese was positively correlated with this factor.

Тhis article analyses Macedonian phrasemes with zoonymic component denoting time. Zoonyms mainly came from surrounding environment which was expected having in mind the fact that man often reaches for something that is well known to him in an attempt to understand something far and abstract, such as the category of time. What distinguishes the analyzed units from the rest of the phraseological material with zoonymic components is their relative neutrality, bearing in mind that in general the zoonymic phrases are negatively colored. Such neutrality is due to their semantics, as well as to the fact that they show the characteristics and animals behavior as they are in reality

In October 2014 in a building of Rzeszow University of Technology, a series of measurements was taken to calculate the parameters of a solar system with a flat collector, as installed on the roof of the building. The following parameters were obtained: the value of solar radiation intensity, the temperature of external air, the temperature on the collector, the temperature of water in the tank and the temperature of glycol on the supply and return lines. On the basis of the data received, charts were made to visually present how changes of solar radiation intensity affected parameters of the system. The study was conducted in autumn when the intensity of solar radiation decreases, compared with summer months. The publication aims to show that the solar system brings energy gains in periods of transition, and the instantaneous intensity of solar radiation are comparable to those in the summer.

Arctic, especially western coast of Spitsbergen has been a field of taking research by scientist from UMCS and AR in Lublin for more than 15 years. Researches have been taken there are connected with earth sciences like: meteorology and climatology, geomorphology, hydrography, geology and agriculture and botany. Meteorological observations were steady point of researches taking on every UMCS?s trips in Spitsbergen. At the beginning, at the 1986-1988 seasons were very wide, and measurements were taken every 3 hours. Between 1989 and 1999 measurements were taken 4 times a day a.e. every 6 hours. Since 1999 measurements have been doing by automatic stations. Appliance this equipment let us taking measurements with 10 minutes time step. The aim of this paper is to present course of meteorological conditions during the scientific trip to Spitsbergen in 2001 at the background of period 1986-2000. There were made comparisons of course mean daily four meteorological elements as: air temperature measured at 200 cm height [°C], wind speed [m/s], cloudiness, and precipitation [mm] from 2001 season with data collected during 15-years UMCS geographical trips on Spitsbergen. We can make statement that in thermic season 2001 was a bit cooler (0.1°C) than the period 1986-2000. At that season variability of mean daily temperatures was lower than in period. The lowest mean daily temperature was 2.5°C, and all days in period 2001 were lukewarm. The rate of mean daily cloudiness in period 1986-2000 is compensated. 2001 season was the same as other seasons during period. The air masses are strongly modified by circulation and orography. Season of 2001 was featured by lower mean daily wind speed (3.2 m/s) than in the period ? 4 m/s, also highest mean daily wind speed in 2001 was lower than in period 1986-2000. The greatest variability of four analysed elements on that period has precipitation. The variable of this element exceed 71.7 mm, which we can express as a ratio 1 to 20. 2001 season was dryer than mean of period about 11 mm.

The article offers a study of two Proustian metaphors: “a living barometer” and “the little barometric figure”. After a brief reminder of the role of time in The Search for Lost Time, we move on to an analysis, sometimes intratextual, sometimes psychoanalytic, of the two metaphors, which places it in the context of family relationships and illness. Indeed, the barometric figure triggers a whole series of imaginary mechanisms which refer to the sensitivity and the constitutive versatility of the Search on the one hand, and to the writing itself on the other hand, but above all root this image in a complex game of identity tensions.

The main purpose of the article is the analysis of the relations between thermic weather types in Hel and types of circulation from Osuchowska-Klein’s classification (1978). Thermic types have been constructed on the basis of A. Woś’s classification of weather types (1993). As a result, in the study eleven thermic types have been distinguished and grouped into three categories of weather: warm, transitory and frosty. Detailed analysis has revealed that the frequency of thermic weather types in particular types of circulation is determined by the character of circulation (cyclonic/anticyclonic) as well as by its direction. The most numerous types of circulation over Poland: E (north-eastern anticyclonic) and CB (north-western cyclonic) most often are accompanied by warm and transitory weather. In Hel the warm weather group is conditioned mainly by the circulation types associated with the advection of the air from the West or South; transitory and frosty groups are related to the types of circulation conditioning the airflow from the northern or eastern sector.
Zasadniczym celem pracy było określenie częstości występowania w Helu termicznych typów pogody (w latach 1976-1995), w zależności od typu cyrkulacji atmosferycznej (według klasyfikacji B. Osuchowskiej-Klein 1978). Termiczne typy pogody wyróżniono na podstawie klasyfikacji zaproponowanej przez A.Wosia (1993), opartej na dobowych warunkach pogodowych. W niniejszym opracowaniu jedynym kryterium grupowania pogody w klasy były charakterystyki termiczne z tej klasyfikacji. Biorąc pod uwagę dobowe wartości temperatur ekstremalnych (tmax, tmin), wyróżniono trzy podstawowe grupy pogód: ciepłe, przejściowe oraz mroźne, które w zależności od wartości średniej dobowej temperatury powietrza podzielono na 11 termicznych typów pogody. W opracowaniu, w pierwszej kolejności określono typy decydujące o charakterze cyrkulacji nad obszarem Polski, a następnie przeanalizowano towarzyszące im termiczne typy pogody w półroczu chłodnym (X-III), ciepłym (IV-IX) oraz w skali roku. Uzyskane wyniki pozwalają na wysnucie następujących wniosków. Cyrkulacja atmosferyczna w dużej mierze determinuje częstość występowania termicznych typów pogody w Helu, przy czym rola kierunku adwekcji mas powietrza jest większa niż charakter (cyklonalny/antycyklonalny) układu barycznego. Występowaniu pogód ciepłych sprzyja większa frekwencja typów cyrkulacji charakteryzujących się napływem powietrza z sektora południowego i zachodniego. Pogody przejściowe i mroźne towarzyszą najczęściej typom cyrkulacji sprowadzającym do Polski powietrze z północy lub ze wschodu. Najliczniej reprezentowanym typem pogody jest pogoda umiarkowanie ciepła, która pojawia się najczęściej późną wiosną i jesienią (z maksimum w październiku) przy najmniejszej częstości w lutym. Do grupy typów o dużej frekwencji należy ponadto: pogoda bardzo ciepła – notowana wyłącznie od kwietnia do października oraz pogoda chłodna – występująca od października do maja. W półroczu chłodnym występuje większe zróżnicowanie termicznych typów pogody w zależności od typu cyrkulacji atmosferycznej.

Opis:
A definition of the concept of information was placed in the publication of spatial data with reference to the hydrometeorological systems covering the country. The next keys to the encryption and transmitting of hydrometeorological measurement were specified in the international system for warning against the dangerous phenomena of the weather. The characteristics of meteorological data they presented were based on the system of weather satellites (circumpolar and geostationary) and of the POLRAD radar system, included in the radar security system of European space. At the end, a few examples were given of geoportals monitoring the state of the natural environment and elements of the ISOK security system, the SMOK system and SSH military system of the Republic of Poland.

Objectives Atmospheric pressure is the most objective weather factor because regardless of if outdoors or indoors it affects all objects in the same way. The majority of previous studies have used the average daily values of atmospheric pressure in a bioclimatic analysis and have found no correlation with blood pressure changes. The main objective of our research was to assess the relationship between atmospheric pressure recorded with a frequency of 1 measurement per minute and the results of 24-h blood pressure monitoring in patients with treated hypertension in different seasons in the moderate climate of the City of Łódź (Poland). Material and Methods The study group consisted of 1662 patients, divided into 2 equal groups (due to a lower and higher average value of atmospheric pressure). Comparisons between blood pressure values in the 2 groups were performed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results We observed a significant difference in blood pressure recorded during the lower and higher range of atmospheric pressure: on the days of the spring months systolic (p = 0.043) and diastolic (p = 0.005) blood pressure, and at nights of the winter months systolic blood pressure (p = 0.013). Conclusions A significant inverse relationship between atmospheric pressure and blood pressure during the spring days and, only for systolic blood pressure, during winter nights was observed. As a result of grammaticalisation processes, within various constructions the pronoun es could establish itself as the subject of these constructions. Amongst them, verbs describing the weather constitute a rather small and semantically defined verb subclass. The es-subject is regarded as a peripheral subject realisation with an abstract meaning. Since the ‘weather’ verbs are a verb group firmly anchored in the German verb system, analogous to other constructions, their primary valence varies too. The valence enhancement, i.e. the two- or multi-digit usage, allows the ‘weather’ verbs to be used as verbs of visual perception, verbs of movement, and verba dicendi. Based on the verb regnen ‘to rain’, the article more closely examines the synchronous variability of its valence.

W pracy przedstawiono przebieg warunków pogodowych w czasie XVII Wyprawy Geograficznej UMCS na Spitsbergen. Pomiary wykonywane były od 14 lipca do 31 sierpnia 2005 r. Obejmowały one następujące elementy meteorologiczne: temperaturę i wilgotność względną powietrza na wysokości 200 cm nad powierzchnią gruntu, temperaturę powietrza na wysokości 5 cm nad powierzchnią gruntu i temperaturę powierzchni czynnej, temperaturę gruntu na głębokościach 5, 10, 20, 50 cm, prędkość i kierunek wiatru, natężenie promieniowania całkowitego oraz UV (A+B), ciśnienie atmosferyczne. Pomiarów dokonywano za pomocą automatycznej stacji meteorologicznej (R-ASTER) z krokiem czasowym 10 minut. Dodatkowo określano stopień zachmurzenia nieba i rodzaju chmur oraz zjawiska atmosferyczne (o godzinie 00, 06, 12, 18 UTC). Ponadto raz na dobę (06 UTC) mierzono opad atmosferyczny i parowanie potencjalne.

The research into the meteorological conditions was initiated in 1986. In 2005, the meteorological investigation began on 14th July and ended on 31st August. The station was located on Calypsostranda, a flat sea terrace, at the height of about 23 m a. s. l., at a distance of 200 m. from Bellsund Fjord and 2 km from the Scott Glacier. The substratum was made of dry lichen-moss tundra. Mean daily air temperature at the altitude of 200 cm amounted to 4.9°C throughout the measu-rement period. The 28th August was the warmest day during the expedition. It was then that the highest mean daily temperature (7.5°C). The highest maximum temperature (9.4°C) was recorded the 24th August. The 17th July was the coldest day in the period, with a mean daily temperature of 2.8°C but a minimum temperature (0.9°C) was recorded the 20th of July. The mean soil temperature evaluated for the depths 5, 10, 20 and 50 cm was positive and varies between 6.0°C in the subsurface layer and 3.7°C in the deeper parts of the analysed profile. The mean relative air humidity was 85.8%. The highest relative humidity (97.1%) were recorded the 7th August. The 18th July was recorded lowest relative humidity - 72.2%. The precipitation total for the whole of the measurement period amounted to 56.7 mm. 26 days with a precipitation . 0.1 mm were observed (which means that rainfall occurred in 53% of the days), including 12 days with precipitation . 1.0 mm. The highest rainfall occurred on 28th July and amounted to 14.2 mm. Mean overall cloudiness amounted to 7.4 (on a 0-8 scale), and low cloud cover - to 5.4. Stratocumulus and Stratus clouds were dominant (60%). The mean wind speed was 4.0m/s. The highest wind speed was noticed 26th and 27th August - 9,4 m/s, but lowest wind speed (1.1 m/s) the 10th August. Dominated winds from East (22.9%) and from Northwest (19.2%). To summarise the summer season 2005 was a warmer, cloudier and wet than the period 1986-2002.

In recent years, the world, including Europe, has seen a much higher incidence of extreme weather phenomena. The ongoing climatic changes have a direct impact on the condition of surface waters. Groundwater is less affected by anthropogenic pollution than surface water, since groundwater can be used in distribution systems for municipal purposes, for food purposes, sold in unit packages, and for medicinal purposes (in drinking and bathing treatments). In Poland, a country with poor water resources, the problem of water scarcity due to climate change may even increase. One solution to this problem may be the increased use of Polish groundwater resources. Hydrogeological conditions favorable to the construction of drill wells, detailed identification of available groundwater resources throughout the country and the low degree of their usage (25% on average) make it possible to increase the intake of groundwater to cover this water deficit, especially in periods of drought.

To construct this model the vector of probabilities of the climate-weather change process staying at the initials climate-weather states, the matrix of probabilities of the climate-weather change process transitions between the climate-weather states, the matrix of conditional distribution functions and the matrix of conditional density functions of the climate-weather change process conditional sojourn times at the climate-weather states are defined. Preliminary applications of the proposed model to the climate-weather change process for the port oil transportation system operation area are presented.

The negative impact of global and regional climate changes upon the crop yields leads to the violation of the crop production stability. The development of reliable methods for assessment of the climatic factors by the reaction of the crops to them in order to minimize the impact of climatic stresses upon the sustainability of food systems is an urgent scientific task. This problem was studied on the example of growing corn. A mathematical analysis of the main meteorological indicators for 16 years of research has been performed on the basis of which the frequency and direction of the occurrence of atypical and extreme weather conditions in various periods of the corn vegetation season were established by the coefficient of significance of deviations of the weather elements from the average long-term norm. It has been proved that the probability of occurrence of such weather conditions in the period from April to September is 38–81% in terms of the average temperature of the month, and 31–69% in terms of precipitation. By using the information base of the corn yields in a stationary field experiment with the gradations of factors: A (the fertilizer option) – A1-A12, B (the crop care method) – B1-B3, C (the hybrid) – C1-C7, the most critical month of the corn ontogeny was established when the weather has a decisive influence upon the formation of the crop. With the help of the correlation-regression analysis it was proved that the corn yield most significantly depends on the average monthly temperature in June, and for the hybrids with FАО 200–299 – on the amount of precipitation in the month of May. The obtained mathematical models make it possible to predict the yield of corn at a high level of reliability depending on the indicators of the main climate-forming factors in June, that is, even before the flowering of the plants (before the stage of ВВСН 61).

This study documents the atmospheric conditions and the development of a tornadic supercell in the Czech Republic, which occurred on the early evening on 24 June 2021. I used the data from the ERA5-reanalysis, vertical atmospheric sounding, synoptic map, and a Sentinel-2 satellite image to determinate the tornado route. As a result of the analysis, it can be concluded that the development of this tornadic supercell was caused by high CAPE values, amounting to around 5,000 J·kg-1, 0-6 km AGL wind shear 30 m·s-1, storm-relative helicity with values of 150 m2·s-2 and a wavy atmospheric front. The tornado occurred around 19:30 local time (1730 UTC) in the town Hrušky and moved north-east, reaching the town Hodonín. Based on satellite image derived from Sentinel-2, the widest point of the tornado reached 70 meters; it traveled a distance of about 20 kilometers and had a force of EF3/T5 on the Fujita/TORRO scale. As a result of this event, 6 people lost their lives, 200 people were seriously injured, and hundreds of buildings and cars were destroyed. Further studies on strong thunderstorm incidents in Europe are necessary for their better understanding and prediction.

Fast and accurate precipitation estimation is an important element of remote atmosphere monitoring, as it allows, for example, to correct short-term weather forecasts and the prediction of several types of meteorological threats. The paper presents methodology for calibrating precipitation estimation algorithm based on MSG SEVIRI sensor data, and Optimal Cloud Analysis product available via EumetCast transmission. Calibration is performed in a predefined coastal zone area, and utilizes the parallelized gradient computing method. In order to perform and validate results of estimation, reference weather radar data was provided by the Meteorology and Hydrology Research Institute (pol. Instytut Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej - IMGW). The research was conducted using the Tryton supercomputer - the high performance computing environment of Gdansk University of Technology.

The study covers an analysis of the impact of meteorological factors on human well-being, as well as the importance of weather forecasts in people’s daily lives. Data obtained from an online questionnaire have been used to determine the characteristics of the influence of weather on human well-being and functioning. Women (65.5%), considerably more often than men (41%) maintain that they are or rather are susceptible to meteoropathy. What is more, this response prevailed in urban rather than suburban or rural areas. The research results also indicate that cyclonic weather (high cloudiness, rainfall, low atmospheric pressure) tends to intensify the body’s response to atmospheric stimuli. High productivity, for example at work, typically accompanies cloudless weather, with air temperatures ranging from 15°C to 24°C which 68.5% of the respondents consider the most optimal. As many as 83.7% of the respondents make use of weather forecast on a daily basis or almost every day, which shows the importance of verification thereof in the context of indirect threat to life, as well as possible unfavorable meteorotropic situations

Labour productivity depends on a number of factors, starting from the most obvious – wages/salary, to work organization and to those less often taken into consideration, such as the weather. Weather affects employees’well-being, and thus the discharge of their duties. Depending on the time of year employees may feel more or less tired and more or less eager to take on new challenges. The emerging question is – is there an accurate way to measure the impact of weather on an employee’s yield? Are all employee weather conditions affected by weather conditions equally, or are there people more (or less) vulnerable to weather? Does it depend on gender, or does weather affect the yield of work of both genders equally? To what extent, in comparison with other factors, does weather affect on yield? Is it possible to identify the weather factor that most effects on yield? To answer the above questions, the research method research used in this study was a survey carried out on the basis of a prepared questionnaire of 314 white-collar workers in the Lodz region. From the analysis of the results of the survey it can be inferred that the weather affects the performance of employees, but not for everyone equally, some are less likely others to suffer a decline in labour yield depending on weather conditions. The weather factor having the greatest negative impact on labour yield, for both men and women, is too high a temperature.
Wydajność pracy zależy od wielu czynników, poczynając od najbardziej oczywistych, tj. wynagrodzenie, organizacja pracy i tych rzadziej branych pod uwagę, takich jak pogoda. Pogoda wpływa a dobre samopoczucie pracowników, a tym samym na jakość wykonywania ich obowiązków. W zależności od pory roku pracownicy mogą czuć się mniej lub bardziej zmęczeni i mniej lub bar400 Dorota Michalak dziej skłonni do podejmowania nowych wyzwań. Pojawia się pytanie – czy istnieje dokładny sposób mierzenia wpływu pogody na plon pracownika? Czy warunki pogodowe mają wpływ na wydajność, czy też są grupy zawodowe bardziej lub mniej podatne na warunki pogodowe? Czy zależy to od płci, czy też pogoda wpływa na wydajność pracy obu płci w równym stopniu? W jakim stopniu, w porównaniu z innymi czynnikami, pogoda wpływa na wydajność? Czy możliwe jest określenie czynnika pogodowego, który ma największy wpływ na wydajność? Aby odpowiedzieć na powyższe pytania, przeprowadzono badanie ankietowe wśród 314 pracowników umysłowych w regionie łódzkim. Z analizy wyników ankiety można wywnioskować, że pogoda wpływa na wydajność pracowników, ale nie na wszystkich jednakowo. Czynnikiem pogodowym mającym największy negatywny wpływ na wydajność pracy, zarówno u mężczyzn, jak i kobiet, jest zbyt wysoka temperatura.

The MeteoGIS system developed at the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute in Poland is a GIS-based system for real-time monitoring of weather and the generation of meteorological warnings. Apart from its monitoring features, it can also provide more advanced analysis, including SQL (Structured Query Language) queries and statistical analyses. Input data are provided mainly by the INCA-PL 2 nowcasting model which employs forecasts from the high-resolution AROME numerical weather prediction model and measurement data from the Polish weather radar network POLRAD and surface meteorological stations. As well as this, data from the PERUN lighting detection system are used. Ingestion of such data allows for the mitigation of risk from potentially hazardous weather phenomena such as extreme temperatures, strong wind, thunderstorms, heavy rain and subsequent impending floods. The following meteorological parameters at ground level are visualised in the MeteoGIS: (i) precipitation (accumulation and type), (ii) temperature, (iii) wind (speed and direction), (iv) lightning (locations and type). End users of the system are workers from civil protection services who are interested in shortterm warnings against severe weather events, especially area-oriented ones (related to districts, catchments, etc.). The reliability of visualised data is a very important issue, and from the MeteoGIS user’s point of view the improvement in data quality is a continuous process.

A significant increase in demand for navigation support systems called Onboard Routing Systems (ORS) can be observed in the World’s merchant fleet. ORS is a navigation-support system that enables route programming to warn of dangers and navigation constraints and determine the required route-safety level directly onboard the vessel. In this article, an attempt to analyze and compare two ORS systems has been made: the Ship Performance Optimization System (SPOS), by the Meteo Consult Group; and the Bon Voyage system by Applied Weather Technologies (AWT). Individual items, methods, and criteria of both systems for optimization and weather forecasting models utilized have been compared. Particular attention has been paid to the usefulness of the systems regarding the problem of identification and avoidance of hazards such as tropical cyclones and wave resonance. Ergonomics of both systems has also been compared.

There are presented the methods of identification of the climate-weather change process. These are the methods and procedures for estimating the unknown basic parameters of the climate-weather change process semi-Markov model and identifying the distributions of the climate-weather change process conditional sojourn times at the climate-weather states.

The paper presents results of research concerning meteorological and hydrological conditions in the storm related with the Xaver cyclone moving fast over the Baltic Sea. The analyses were based on remote sensing data from radars in Świdwin and Gdańsk-Rębiechowo and hydrometeorological data from direct measurements conducted at the coastal stations of the Polish Navy, marine stations of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, hydrometeorological station on the “Baltic Beta” oil rig and the Coastal Research Station of the Institute of Hydroengineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Lubiatowo. The assessment of the synoptic situation was made using surface weather charts, satellite images of cloud cover and meteorological radars products. The measurement data were used to analyze the surface and upper air wind fields for assessment of the hydrological situation (water condition, height and direction of the significant and maximum waves) and evaluation of threats to sea navigation and coastal infrastructure.

The article presents a method to determine the route of a sailing vessel with the aid of deterministic algorithms. The method assumes that the area in which the route is to be determined is limited and the basic input data comprise the wind vector and the speed characteristic of the vessel. Compared to previous works of the authors, the present article additionally takes into account the effect of sea waves with the resultant resistance increase on the vessel speed. This approach brings the proposed model closer to real behaviour of a sailing vessel. The result returned by the method is the sailing route, optimised based on the multi-criteria objective function. Along with the time criterion, this function also takes into account comfort of voyage and the number of performed turns. The developed method has been implemented as simulation application SaillingAssistance and experimentally verified.

W opracowaniu scharakteryzowano przebieg warunków pogodowych podczas XXVI Wyprawy Polarnej Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej na Spitsbergen. Pomiary wykonywano od 8 lipca do 1 września 2014 roku za pomocą automatycznej stacji meteorologicznej zainstalowanej w Calypsobyen (Bellsund, Svalbard). Analizie poddano temperaturę i wilgotność względną powietrza na wysokości 200 cm nad powierzchnią gruntu (n.p.g.), temperaturę powietrza przy gruncie (5 cm n.p.g.) oraz prędkość i kierunek wiatru. Uzyskane wyniki zostały porównanie z danymi, dla okresu wspólnego, z dwudziestu sezonów pomiarowych z lat 1986-2011 tj. od 10 lipca do 25 sierpnia.
Arctic is an area which rapidly react on the changes in environment. The weather conditions react the most quickly and determine other changes in geosystem. That is why the meteorology is the subject not only for meteorologist and climatologist but also for other researchers (like geomorphologists, hydrologists) and makes the background for their research in polar region. The region of Wedel Jarlsberg Land (western coast of Spitsbergen) has been a field of taking research by scientist from the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (Lublin) for almost 30 years. Meteorological observations were carried out since 1986. At the beginning, measurements were taken every 3 or 6 hours. Since 1999 measurements have been doing by automatic stations taking measurements with 10 minutes time step (144 times per day). The aim of this paper is to present course of meteorological conditions during the XXVI Expe-dition of UMCS to Spitsbergen in 2014 on the background of multiyear 1986-2011. The station was located on Calypsostranda, a flat sea terrace, at the height of about 23 m a. s. l., at a distance of 200 m from Bellsund Fjord and 2 km from the Scott Glacier. The substratum was made of dry lichen-moss tundra. In 2014, the meteorological investigation began on 8th July and ended on 1st September. The mean daily air temperature at the altitude of 200 cm amounted to 5.9°C throughout the measurement period. The highest mean daily temperature (8.4°C) was recorded twice: the 23rd July and 4th August. The lowest mean daily temperature (3.1°C) was recorded the 31st August. Mean daily air temperature at the altitude of 5 cm also amounted to 5.9°C. The highest temperatures are recorded around 12 UTC, and the lowest just before midnight. In the 5-18 UTC temperature at 5 cm is higher than the temperature at 200 cm. The highest maximum temperature at the altitude of 200 cm (12.2°C) and at the altitude of 5 cm (14.0°C) was recorded the 4th August. Minimum temperature at the altitude of 200 cm (1.5°C) was recorded the 27th August and at the altitude of 5 cm (-1.7°C) the 25th August. The mean daily relative humidity at a height of 200 cm above the ground amounted to 85% and only twice (4th and 24th August), the humidity dropped below 60%, which was associated with the presence of foehn from the East. For the whole measurement period, the total precipitation amounted to 38.6 mm. 17 days with a precipitation ≥ 0.1 mm were observed (which means that rainfall occurred in 30% of the days). The highest rainfall amounted to 9.6 mm and occurred on 10th July when the air temperature at the altitude of 200 cm decreased from 10.2 do 5.6°C and the weak south wind changed direction to the west, and his speed increased to more than 7 m∙sˉ¹. The mean wind speed was 3,6 m∙sˉ¹ throughout the season. To compare selected meteorological weather conditions of the summer season 2014 against the multiyear 1986-2011, based on data for the period that is common (10th July – 25th August). The mean daily air temperature in 2014 was up to 1.1°C higher than the average temperature of period 1986-2011. Only season of 2002 was characterized by higher average temperature (6.3°C). The sum of the 2014 season precipitation was lower than in multiyear. The mean daily wind speed of season 2014 was 3.6 m sˉ¹ and was lower only by 0.7 m ·sˉ¹ from the mean of multiyear. During the season 2014, the winds from W were dominated (25.7%), while its frequency in other seasons does not exceed 5-10%.

The satisfaction of the participants tourist or leisure events depend on weather to large extend however weather which is commonly considered as bad may not spoil the event under providing that the organizer is prepared for different weather condition in advance, for instance, if the organizer knows about unfavorable forecast they may change the programme of the event in order to satisfy the participants. Therefore it is very important for the organizers how to use weather forecast. In this paper some Internet portals which include forecasts and information about weather at real time are presented. The majority of the forecasts are based on Global Circulation Models which work in a mezoscale (countries and regions). The results of the application of these models are presented in graphical forms and meteograms that are prepared for a network of points. Furthermore the paper describes the portals which show weather data on main roads in Poland, the portals that present satellite photos as well as portals with information collected from rain radars. The information gathered from different portal allow adjusting tourist events to predicted weather conditions or allow changing their course during the event.

In the article the author has attempted to characterize certain contexts of the 1947 flood – one of the worst calamities in Poland in the 20th century. According to incomplete data, at least 65 people died as a result, which is more than in the 1934 flood, which until then had been considered the worst (with 55 victims). The discussion, based mainly on source materials which have not been used before and press articles, relates to issues such as: anomalous weather conditions in Poland and Europe in the years 1946–47 (a cold wave), reasons for the flood (climate-related, organizational, economic), loss of property, everyday life in areas struck by the calamity and attempts at its political objectifycation, and forms of aid for the victims.

The overall objective of the research is to summarize tactical considerations, resulting from terrain and weather analysis, to support the preparation, planning and execution of subterranean operations. The study used the Grounded Theory for collection, analysis, and systematic treatment of data. The main data sources for the study consisted of purposive sampling from operations in subterranean systems and lessons learned from them. Two new sub-variables are now proposed to be included in terrain and weather variable from mission analysis model for subterranean operations: Subterranean system’s location and accesses and subterranean system features. The key to finding subterranean systems is through terrain analysis, physical ground search, operational indicators, and intelligence products. The analysis of the features of the subterranean system and its mapping is critical for developing courses of action. Forces must be trained and equipped to manoeuvre and combat at short distances and poor visibility conditions. Surface access points and command and control bunkers usually are assessed as key terrain. Obstacles placed at intersections are excellent ambush sites. Accessing sophisticated structures requires specific techniques and equipment. Inside the subterranean systems, existing angles, barriers, walls, cavities, stairwells and other objects provide cover and concealment. Water can make it impossible to build subterranean systems, place obstacles, or even use them; droughts can “create” new avenues of approach. Clouds and fog difficult the detection of subterranean systems. The terrain and weather analysis model, the characteristics, and the tactical considerations presented, all combined, support the preparation, planning, and execution of operations in subterranean systems.

The objective of the work was to describe the thermal and snow conditions in the winter period in the Siedlce area. The average daily air temperatures were used in addition to numbers of days with a snow cover of at least 1 cm for the years 2000–2016 obtained from the Meteorological Station in Siedlce. Dates of the beginning and end of the winter season were determined. The average temperature of the winter season was determined in addition to the degree of winter severity, according to Oskin. The average, minimum and maximum values of parameters were calculated. The probability of an occurrence of individual types of winter severity was determined. Next, principal component analysis and cluster analysis were applied, the latter to the group years in terms of the days with a given type of weather in winter. It was found that – on average – the thermal winter began on 5 December and ended on 6th March. The winter was found to have lasted for 66 days. From year to year, there was observed an increase in the average number of days with mild weather. The greatest decline was found for the days with the weather typical of slightly severe and moderately severe winter. The last study years had the highest average number of days with weather typical of mild, slightly severe and moderately severe winter, and the lowest number of the days with weather typical of severe, very severe, unusually severe and extremely severe winter.

Belgian novelist Marie Gevers lived all her life surrounded by venerable trees alongside a pond, in the gorgeous estate of Missembourg. Her imagination and sensibility were deeply impregnated by the changing of natural elements and seasons, which were enhanced as authentic characters in her literary work. Plaisir des météores (1938) is emblematic of this impregnation, being a personal and poetical rewriting of legendary almanacs, which invigorated less-literate populations in the remote countryside for centuries after the invention of the printing press. Enlightened by this particular tradition and an analysis of the author’s creative stylistic devices, season renewal appears as an everlasting dramaturgy, leading us to adapt ourselves to the world’s perpetual metamorphosis, in a pure Ode to Joy.

Every year a very large number of people die on the roads. From year to year, the value decreases, there are still a very high number of them. The pandemic has reduced the number of road accidents, but the value is still very high. For this reason, it is necessary to know under which weather conditions the highest number of road accidents occur, and to know the forecast of accidents according to the prevailing weather conditions for the coming years, in order to be able to do everything possible to minimize the number of road accidents. The purpose of the article is to make a forecast of the number of road accidents in Poland depending on the prevailing weather conditions. The research was divided into two parts. The first was the analysis of annual data from the Police statistics on the number of road accidents in Poland in 2001-2021, and on this basis the forecast of the number of road accidents for 2022-2031 was determined. The second part of the research, dealt with monthly data from 2007-2021. Again, the analyzed forecast for the period January 2022-December 2023 was determined. The results of the study indicate that we can still expect a decline in the number of accidents in the coming years, which is particularly evident when analyzing annual data. It is worth noting that the prevailing pandemic distorts the results obtained. The research was conducted in MS Excel, using selected trend models.

It is well known that Weather Routing is one of the effective ship operation methods to reduce fuel consumption and many studies have been conducted to develop the effective calculation methods. However, most studies were performed focusing on the ocean going ships, and there were few studies made for coastal ships. The authors propose a minimum fuel route calculation method for coastal ships that use the precise forecasted environmental data and the propulsion performance data of the ship on actual seas. In the proposed method, we use the Dijkstra’s algorithm to calculate an optimum minimum fuel route suitable for coastal ships. Simulation study was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method using two coastal ships. As the result of study, the authors confirmed that the proposed calculation method is effective for fuel consumption reduction and is applicable for the operation of coastal merchant ships.

The General Lighthouse Authorities of the United Kingdom and Ireland (GLA) provide marine Aids-to-Navigation (AtoNs) for the benefit and safety of all mariners within their waters. These AtoNs include traditional lighthouses, buoys and various radionavigation systems. It is recognised that GPS, or more generally Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), have become the primary means of obtaining Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) information at sea. Mariners may have come to believe that GPS is infallible, yet it is known to be vulnerable to solar activity, interference and system failures. The Sun continuously releases random bursts of energy and highly charged particles. The impact of these emissions on the Earth is known as space weather. Bursts of electromagnetic energy can result in radio blackouts; bursts of high energy particles can increase ionising radiation and affect space craft performance; and bursts of magnetised plasma can result in the degradation and potential loss of radionavigation signals on Earth. The amount of solar activity is linked with the natural sunspot cycle, which shows the number of sunspots peak approximately every 11 years, with the next peak due in 2013. Sunspots occur almost continuously, but normally give rise to weak solar events that generally go by unnoticed. However significant storms can occur at any time and as we approach peak activity, the number of space weather events will increase. AtoNs generally report their position using radio systems, whether through the Automatic Identification System (AIS), public networks or dedicated links; and often use GNSS to calculate their position and to obtain timing information. Mariners use GNSS for PNT information; with this information integrated into many different bridge systems. Powerful solar storms can affect GNSS performance and the reception of their signals, which may lead to different correlated events, both on and off the ship. During very extreme and very rare storms, national power systems may be switched off to protect the infrastructure which would clearly affect those services relying on mains power without backup. This paper reports the output of a study into the potential effects of space weather on GLA AtoN service provision and presents mitigating actions, where appropriate. The outcome of this study will help the GLA to continue to provide the highest level of AtoN availability, helping to ensure the safety of all mariners.

With the substantial rising of international oil price and global warming on the rise, how to reduce operational fuel consumption and decrease air pollution has become one of the pursued goals of green ship. Ship route planning is an indispensible part of the ship navigation process, especially in transoceanic crossing ship routing. The soundness of ship routing not only affects the safety of ship navigation but also the operation economy and environmental protection. This research is based on the platform of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), and founded on Ant Colony Algorithm (ACA) combined with the concept of Genetic Algorithm (GA), to model living organisms optimization behaviour to perform efficient ship route planning in transoceanic crossing. Besides the realization of route planning automation, ship routing will achieve the goal of optimum carbon dioxide reduction and energy conservation, and provide reference for route planning decision.

The paper is focused on the processing of 3D weather radar data to minimize the impact of a number of errors from different sources, both meteorological and non-meteorological. The data is also quantitatively characterized in terms of its quality. A set of dedicated algorithms based on analysis of the reflectivity field pattern is described. All the developed algorithms were tested on data from the Polish radar network POLRAD. Quality control plays a key role in avoiding the introduction of incorrect information into applications using radar data. One of the quality control methods is radar data assimilation in numerical weather prediction models to estimate initial conditions of the atmosphere. The study shows an experiment with quality controlled radar data assimilation in the COAMPS model using the ensemble Kalman filter technique. The analysis proved the potential of radar data for such applications; however, further investigations will be indispensable.

In the paper a general safety analytical model of complex technical system related to the climateweather change process in its operating area is defined. First, the system operation at climate-weather variable conditions is given. Additionally, the semi-Markov approach is used. Further, the safety model of the multistate system at climate-weather variable conditions is introduced. The notions of the conditional safety functions at the climate-weather particular states, the unconditional safety function and the risk function of the complex system at changing in time climate-weather conditions are presented. The other safety indices like mean lifetime up to the exceeding a critical safety state, the moment when the risk function value exceeds the acceptable safety level, the intensities of ageing of the critical infrastructure and its components and the coefficients of the climate-weather impact on the critical infrastructure and its components intensities of ageing are defined.

Opis:
The current state of the art and dedicated applications in Early Warning Systems (EWS) of hydrological and meteorological threats are presented herein. Special emphasis is placed on systems based on the post-processing of deterministic numerical weather forecasts in the real-time mode. The importance of climate and weather forecasting models in providing warnings against slow and rapid onset rates e.g. drought and dispersion of atmospheric pollutants respectively, is discussed. It is strongly suggested that there is a need for systems, corresponding to crisis situations in the field of environmental hazards and/or human activities in general, that would be able to provide support and information about further possible scenarios with a projected state of both the environment and the possibility of the negative impact of various factors on the population (human communities). Since there are highly developed plans for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland, there is an urgent need to prepare adequate tools that will help avoid crisis situations, or at least to minimize their negative effects. The Early Warning System should be considered one such tool, to be used not only for its economic benefits, but also for pro-social areas of services responsible for the appropriate reaction to crisis events.

Solar space weather events like Coronal Mass Ejections and solar flares are usually accompanied by solar radio bursts, which can be used for a low-cost real-time space weather monitoring. In order to make a standard system, a CALLISTO (Compound Astronomical Low-cost Low-frequency Instrument for Spectroscopy in Transportable Observatory) spectrometers, designed and built by electronics engineer Christian Monstein of the Institute for Astronomy of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) have been already developed all over the world since 2005 to monitor the solar activities such as solar flare and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). Up to date, there are 25 sites that used the same system in order to monitor the Sun within 24 hours. This outstanding project also is a part of the United Nations together with NASA initiated the International Heliophysical Year IHY2007 to support developing countries participating in ‘Western Science’. Beginning February 2012, Malaysia has also participated in this project. The goals of this work is to highlight how does the signal processing of solar radio burst data transfer from a site of National Space Centre Banting Selangor directly to the Institute of Astrophysics Switzerland. Solar activities in the low region, focusing from 150 MHz to 400 MHz is observed daily beginning from 00.30UT 12.30 UT. Here, we highlighted how does the signal processing work in order to make sure that the operation is in the best condition. Although the solar activities have experienced rapid growth recently, high-level management of CALLISTO system has remained successfully manage the storage of data. It is also not easy to maintain the future data seems the number of sites are also growing from time to time. In this work, we highlighted the potential role of Malaysia as one of the candidate site that possible gives a good data and focusing on a few aspects such as optimization, and performance evaluation data and visualization.

We examined to what extend the rate and direction of changes in unmanaged grassland depend on fluctuations in climatic conditions. Vegetation data from permanent plots in a semi-natural grassland in southern Poland collected over 12 years were used. Relations between weather variables, time, and the cover of 41 more frequent species and 14 plant functional groups were analysed. The greatest effect on the dynamics of species and functional groups had precipitation in spring and/or early summer, particularly in the current year. The majority of plant groups were significantly affected also by the temperature in spring and early summer in one of the three previous years. During 12 years, the cover of annuals and biennials, short plants, and plants with small leaves decreased, while the cover of taller plants, plants with larger leaves, and with vegetative spread increased. The analyses suggest that these successional changes were not directly associated with climatic conditions but were affected by them indirectly through interspecific competition. The fluctuations in climatic conditions, chiefly precipitation, had a significant effect on both the composition and the rate of changes in abandoned grassland. The increase in the cover of tall perennial species with broad leaves hindered succession towards woodland despite of the presence of woods in the closed vicinity. It can be expected that during drier periods colonisation of grassland by later successional species could be easier.

The current state of knowledge and the latest trends and examples of decision support systems (DSSs) are presented in this paper. Special emphasis was placed on a DSS proposal based on post-processed numerical weather forecasts operating in a real time. There is an essential need for decision support systems that can react to any incidents – including those that pose a risk to the natural environment or human activity in general. For this purpose an exemplary system has been prepared, which was – from its conception to implementation – the original idea of the author. The system enables communication with the user via a graphical user interface that controls the operation of the program, the course of the algorithm and the data flow. The system is modular, allowing the connection of other applications to carry out the work of a DSS. A basic view of the operating window and working panels have been designed for proper demonstration of various types of information and visualizations – the substantial products and results of the system. Further research in the field of DSS of this kind should be the implementation within the RIOT system of mechanisms of notification and response to crisis events related to extreme weather phenomena (whirlwinds, intensive rains, strong frosts or heats).

The article describes the methodology related to determining the multi-criteria routes for sailing ships. Details of sea area discretisation and discretisation of the description of the sailing vessel properties and manoeuvring principles are shown. User requirements were specified (for five different categories of users) and on this basis the criteria for selecting the most suitable shipping route were formulated. The presented algorithm recommends a route for a given user category by means of defined restrictions and configuration parameters. The applied multi-criteria approach proves the universality and usability of the sailing ship route planning method.

The Joint Research Project METEOMET - "Metrology for Meteorology" realized in the frame of the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) is described in the paper. The project is focused on the traceability of measurements involved in the climate changes: surface and upper air measurements of temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, solar irradiance and reciprocal influences between measurands. It includes development and testing of novel instruments as well as improved calibration procedures and facilities for ground based observations, including in-situ practical calibrations and best practice dissemination. The project consortium is based on 18 National Metrology Institutes (NMIs), three un-funded partners and several collaborators, such as universities, research centers, meteorological organization and institutions, from Europe and other non-European countries. Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRiM) in Italy is the project coordinator. Three Polish organizations participate in the project: the Central Office of Measure (MG-GUM), the Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research (INTiBS) and the Wrocław University (UWr).

The article deals with the problem of ship’s ocean route programming. For masters during planning the ocean most convenient route lots of factors are very important such as among others: current, forecast weather, criteria and restriction, speed and fuel characteristic of ships on waves and wind and so on. These elements when are properly identify and adopted allow the master for making an effective ship’s course and speed decision. The aim of research is to show how the SPOS system is treated during the ocean’s ship route. 39 captains of PŻM ships during the year of 2014 answered on 9 questions of questionnaire which were concerned the degree of utilization of SPOS (Ship Performance Optimization System) during the operation of their ships. All the masters confirmed that they use of SPOS system as a browser weather, while only 25.6% of masters confirmed that they also use the SPOS system as a tool in planning the route. They also repeatedly pointed out, however, that SPOS has some of limitations such as not limited information about ice cover or tropical cyclones, etc. In conclusion, it can be assess that the SPOS system is satisfactorily used on ships as a browser forecast, but does not work well in planning the trip by navigators.

W pracy przestawiono charakterystykę sezonów pogodowych wydzielonych przy wykorzystaniu metody dendrytu wrocławskiego. Opracowanie wykonano w oparciu o dane opublikowane w rocznikach meteorologicznych wydanych przez IMGW w Gdyni (1980-2000) i Instytut Geofizyki PAN (2000-2003). W Hornsundzie notuje się cztery sezony pogodowe (zima, wiosna, lato i jesień) o zróżnicowanym czasie trwania i o specyficznej strukturze pogód (frekwencja grup, podgrup, klas i typów). Daty ich początków i końców nie pozostają w ściślejszym związku z astronomicznymi porami roku.
Climatic seasons are understood as periods of the time comprising sometimes several months characterized by some definite homogeneity of climatic conditions. Quantity and frequency analysis of types of weather in Hornsund shows that succeeding decades of year are differentiated in a diversified degree. There also exist decades of similar features. The Wroclav dendrite method was applied to distinguish the groups of decades which are characterized by the definite weather homogeneity. If enabled the classification into 4 climatic season according to homogeneity of quantity and frequency of weather types. Each season is characterized by different period of duration and specific weather structure. The distinguished weather seasons are characterized by a right degree of weather conditions contrasts. The most differentiated is the structure of winter weather which indicates that this is the most dynamic period of the weather types appearance. The summer structure is the most homogenous when two weather types comprise on average 30% of time of the season duration. Transitional seasons (spring and autumn) have a similar structure of weather states, the autumn season is colder and less cloudy than the spring season. Both seasons are characterized by the remarkable amount of transitional weathers, frost - thaw types. The distinguished seasons do not belong to thermal or astronomic seasons of the year. The peculiarity of these seasons is their different time of beginning in relation to the sun (solar) energy supplied. Winter and autumn in Hornsund start clearly earlier than their calendar equivalents, spring and summer are delayed.

Smoke can reduce the airport’s visibility and is related to the aviation safety and efficiency. Low visibility has potential safety hazard, such GA-152 crashed in 1997, and thus there is a need to find out the visibility characteristics in airports over Sumatra and Borneo Island caused by 2015 forest fire. This research aims to analyse the spatiotemporal visibility characteristics over airports in Sumatera and Borneo Island using flight rule visibility below minima criteria and hazard probability. The analysis of smoke was characterized using visibility severity index (VSI) that is a function of visibility severity class and its probability level. Spatiotemporal analysis of severity index combined with hotspot and wind numerical weather model indicates that the worst impact visibility occurred in September and October 2015. The lowest visibility was occured over night until afternoon time period. The spread of VSI impact has a tendency to northward and northwestward. The very high VSI levels occurred at airports such: WIJJ (Jambi), WIBB (Pekanbaru), WAGG (Palangkaraya) which were impacted up to 70% of flight operations time with IFR visibility below minima; while the WIOS (Susilo-Sintang), which operates only on VFR, experienced about 92% of VFR visibility below minima at smoke climax period.

The main aim of the article is to present the climatology of the peak wind gust frequency in Poland caused by the impact of both atmospheric circulation and the presence of thunderstorm clouds. Nine meteorological stations for the measurement period of 2001-2015 were taken into account. Only SYNOP reports with a peak wind gust higher or equal to 15 m s-1 in thunderstorm and non-thunderstorm days are considered in this study. The results indicate that the highest threat in terms of frequency and strength of peak wind gusts due to convection occurs in July. In winter, thunderstorms are rare, but if they occur, about 80% of them produce wind gusts exceeding a threshold of 15 m s-1. Peak wind gusts in a non-thunderstorm days are the highest and the most frequent in January, and are at a minimum during summer. Comparing both types, peak wind gusts during days with a thunderstorm were on average stronger than those without an involved convection. This indicated that convection was an important factor in enhancing the strength of a wind gust. The highest value in our base was 34 m s-1, recorded in Kraków on 8th July 2015 within the occurrence of a severe thunderstorm, while the highest value in a day without a thunderstorm was 33 m s-1, recorded in Łódź on 31st January 2002.

Space weather has a close connection with the interaction of the Earth and the Sun. As equatorial country, the characteristic features of the climate of Malaysia are uniform temperature, very high humidity and copious rainfall. Malaysia has an average of temperature of 26.7 °C per year. Therefore, it is suitable to monitor the Sun. In the following work, we will emphasize the development of Sun monitoring in Malaysia. The number of observatories are increasing. A dedicated work to understand the Sun activity in radio region is a part of an initiative of the United Nations together with NASA in order to support developing countries participating in „Western Science‟ research. Realizing how important for us to monitor the space weather, therefore, we have been utilizing the new radio spectrometer, CALLISTO (Compound Low Cost Low Frequency Transportable Observatories) spectrometer. Malaysia is one of the earliest country from South- East Asia (ASEAN) that involve this research. One of the advantages to start the solar monitoring in Malaysia is because our strategic location as equator country that makes possible to observing a Sun for 12 hours daily throughout a year. We strongly believe that Malaysia as one of contributor of solar activity data through E-CALLISTO network. This is a very good start for developing a space weather in Malaysia. With the implementation of CALLISTO systems and development of solar monitoring network, a new wavelength regime is becoming available for solar radio astronomy. Overall, this article presents an overview of space weather in Malaysia. With the present level of the international collaboration, it is believed that the potential involvement of local and international scientist in space weather will increase.

The study presents variation of wastewater inflow and its components during a year. We considered a situation with and without precipitation. Two renovated wastewater treatment plants were selected to analyse the available parameters and relation between them. Both wastewater treatment plants served to treat domestic and industrial wastewater with similar characteristics. One of them is only for the town purposes; second one serves for the surrounding villages. The relation between the concentration of pollutants and a flow of wastewater is very low. The correlation and a coefficient of the determination between pollutants were over 0.5.

The Multicriteria Evolutionary Weather Routing Algorithm (MEWRA) has already been introduced by the author on earlier TransNav 2009 and 2011 conferences with a focus on theoretical application to a hybrid‐propulsion or motor‐driven ship. This paper addresses the topic of possible practical weather routing applications of MEWRA. In the paper some practical advantages of utilizing Pareto front as a result of multicriteria optimization in case of route finding are described. The paper describes the notion of Paretooptimality of routes along with a simplified, easy to follow, example. It also discusses a choice of the most suitable ranking method for MEWRA (a comparison between Fuzzy TOPSIS and Zero Unitarization Method is presented). In addition to that the paper briefly outlines a commercial application of MEWRA.

This paper covers the current state of maritime oil transportation in the Baltic Sea and the development of oil transportation in the 2000s, as well as estimations of transported oil volumes in 2020 and 2030 in the Gulf of Finland. The scenarios were formulated on the basis of a current state analysis, energy and transportation strategies and scenarios and expert assessments. The study showed that the volumes of oil transportation in the Gulf of Finland will increase only moderately compared to the current status: 9.5-33.8 %, depending on the scenario. Green energy policy favours renewable energy sources, which can be seen in the smaller volumes of transported oil in the 2030 scenarios compared to the 2020 scenarios. In the Slow development 2020 scenario, oil transport volumes for 2020 are expected to be 170.6 Mt (million tonnes), in the Average development 2020 187.1 Mt and in the Strong development 2020 201.5 Mt. The corresponding oil volumes for the 2030 scenarios were 165 Mt for the Stagnating development 2030 scenario, 177.5 Mt for the Towards a greener society 2030 scenario and 169.5 Mt in the Decarbonising society 2030 scenario.

Zarówno zbyt duża, jak i zbyt mała objętość ścieków dopływających do oczyszczalni, w odniesieniu do tej, która została określona na etapie projektowania może przyczynić się do obniżenia skuteczności usuwania zanieczyszczeń. Mając to na uwadze, w niniejszym artykule dokonano analizy ilości ścieków odprowadzanych w latach 2013–2015 z terenu aglomeracji Sanok i unieszkodliwianych na lokalnej oczyszczalni. Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała, że oczyszczalnia w Trepczy w każdym roku analizowanego okresu przyjmowała ścieki w podobnych ilościach, nieprzekraczających wielkości projektowej przepustowości obiektu, o czym świadczą wyznaczone wartości dopływów średniodobowych. Zauważa się, że okresach bezdeszczowych do oczyszczalni dopływały mniejsze ilości ścieków niż w dniach z pogodą mokrą. Pomimo okresowo występujących sytuacji przeciążenia i niedociążenia hydraulicznego obiektu, można stwierdzić, że skuteczność zachodzących tam procesów oczyszczania nie jest zagrożona nadmierną bądź niedostateczną ilością dopływających ścieków.
Both too large and too small volume of sewage inflowing to wastewater treatment plant in relation to its volume determined during designing process, can contribute to the reduction of sewage treatment effectiveness. Taking into consideration, in this article, the analysis of the sewage quantity discharging from the Sanok agglomeration and treated in domestic wastewater treatment plant in 2013–2015 was performed. The analysis indicated that in each year of the analyzed period, to the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Trepcza, a similar volumes of sewage was inflowing and the maximum hydraulic capacity of the object was not exceeded, what is evidenced by the average daily sewage flow values. It is noted that in rainless periods, the quantities of inflowing sewage were smaller than during days with wet weather. Despite of periodically situations of the hydraulic overload and hydraulic underload, it can be stated that the effectiveness of the sewage treatment processes is not endangered by the excessive or insufficient quantities of inflowing sewage.

Farming is an activity which is heavily exposed to risk. Farmers have to deal daily with the change of weather, crops, and prices, resulting not only in fluctuations in income, but also in the need to incur emergency expenses. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the available catastrophic insurance dedicated to the agriculture sector, with particular emphasis on compulsory insurance and with a comparison of the insurance systems of other countries and the Polish system. I also examine the level of awareness of Polish entrepreneurs in the agricultural industry of the impact of weather conditions on the business. The methodology used to answer the research question was the CAWI survey and market research. Despite the mandatory insurance of the selected risks, farmers still do not see the necessity to purchase insurance. The very design of the instrument raises questions, especially about the enforcement system for compliance with the insurance obligation and the type of risk being insured. The low awareness of the impact of weather on agricultural business and the possibility to protect the farm and benefits via the undertaken insurance activities is an undoubted problem in the development of insurance instruments on the market to protect the agricultural sector against adverse weather conditions. While one can see some similarities when comparing agricultural insurance schemes in different countries, nonetheless it is clear that these systems are significantly different from each other. This difference is justified, as is not possible to create a single coherent system which would take into account the economic, social, and cultural differences. Viewed against the background of insurance schemes operating in other countries, the Polish system looks disadvantageous. Given the rapid increase in the number of extreme weather phenomena and their increasing scale there is an urgent need for reforms.
Prowadzenie gospodarstwa rolnego jest działalnością w dużym stopniu narażoną na ryzyko. Rolnicy codziennie mają do czynienia ze zmianą pogody, plonów czy cen, czego wynikiem są nie tylko wahania dochodów, ale także konieczność ponoszenia nagłych wydatków. Celem artykułu jest analiza dostępnych ubezpieczeń katastroficznych dedykowanych branży rolnej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ubezpieczenia obowiązkowego wraz z porównaniem tych ubezpieczeń z innymi krajami oraz zbadanie poziomu świadomości przedsiębiorców branży rolnej na temat wpływu warunków atmosferycznych na prowadzoną działalność. Mimo obowiązkowego charakteru ubezpieczeń wybranych ryzyk rolnicy nadal nie dostrzegają konieczności wykupu polisy ubezpieczeniowej. Duże wątpliwości budzi sama konstrukcja narzędzia, przede wszystkim system egzekwowania niewywiązania się z obowiązku ubezpieczeniowego oraz rodzaj zabezpieczanego ryzyka. Niewątpliwym problemem w rozwoju rynku instrumentów zabezpieczających przed niekorzystnym wpływem warunków atmosferycznych dedykowanych branży rolnej jest niska świadomość na temat wpływu pogody na prowadzoną działalność oraz możliwości zabezpieczania gospodarstwa rolnego i korzyści płynące z podejmowanych działań zabezpieczających. Porównując systemy ubezpieczeń rolnych w różnych krajach można dostrzec pewne podobieństwa jednak widać wyraźnie, że systemy te znacznie różnią się od siebie. Fakt ten jest uzasadniony, nie ma bowiem możliwości stworzenia jednego spójnego sytemu uwzględniającego różnice gospodarcze, społeczne i kulturowe. Na tle systemów ubezpieczeniowych funkcjonujących w innych krajach polski system wypada źle, widać wyraźnie, że niezbędne są szybkie zmiany.

The paper is concerned with an application of the critical infrastructure operation process related to climate-weather change model to identification and prediction of this process for maritime ferry. There are distinguished four different processes for the corresponding ferry operating area. Further, using identified parameters of the ferry operation process and the ferry operating area climate-weather change processes, there are determined the unknown parameters of those processes. Namely, there are determined the probabilities of the processes staying at the initial states, the probabilities of the transitions between the states and the mean values of the processes' conditional sojourn times at particular states. Finally, there are predicted the main characteristics of the ferry operation process related to climate-weather change processes at the distinguished operating area.

The article presents some aspects of planning and conducting reconnaissance in mountainous terrain. The mountainous terrain has played a significant role in numerous battles and has been the key area creating opportunities for further actions. Intelligence staff is responsible for gaining the information necessary for military decision making process. Intelligence cell conducts IPB process during mission planning and throughout the operation. By applying intelligence preparation of the battlefield, commanders gain the information necessary to selectively apply and maximize operational effectiveness at critical points in time and space. There are many considerations affecting organization of reconnaissance in the mountainous terrain. IPB identifies the facts and assumptions about the enemy, terrain, weather, and civil considerations that allow effective staff planning. A reasonable estimate of the terrain and the enemy may pose many difficulties. The main task of the reconnaissance units in such a terrain is to find out the presence, the organization and positions of the enemy troops. The proper organization of observation system in mountainous terrain is one of the most important planning issues for intelligence cell. Knowledge about the terrain is a key factor to defeat your opponent in the battle.

Ensemble forecasting is considered to take into account the uncertainty levels that are typical of operations in a stochastic environment. Increased accuracy of weather prediction is achieved through the assimilation of real-time data, measured by an on-board monitoring system. The proposed system will allow smooth integration of short-term Decision Support Systems for ship handling in dangerous or peculiar situations with long-term Decision Support Systems for weather routing. An appropriate user interface is also a critical part of the project and it will be implemented in a commercial Electronic Nautical Chart environment. A prototype of the full system will be installed and tested on a commercial vessel in regular operations and under real environmental conditions.

The aim of the study washas been to determine the differences in the 24-hour means values of some selected meteorological elements between the stations analysed and also to determine the influence of atmospheric circulation on their distribution. Meteorological data collected at the Polar Station of the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Hornsund and the Calypsobyen Station of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University of Lublin wasere used for the present research. The present studies showed that air temperature in Calypsobyen is on average 0.6°C higher than in Hornsund. Calypsobyen is warmer than Hornsund fromat almost all circulation directions. Hornsund is warmer only in the case of the NW direction. The highest levels of temperature differences (> 1°C) occur from theat S and SW directions. Calypsobyen was 0.3°C colder than Hornsund only in the case of the NWc type. Regarding the average total cloud coveriness of the sky [0-10], the difference between the two stations analysed was as small as 0.1. This results from thea high total cloud coveriness of the sky during summer. No differences were found in the case of medium wind velocity levels similarly as was in the case for the of cloud coveriness. The a mean difference forro this parameter was 0.1 m/s. The location of the station, as well as the orographic reletions in its surroundings, exerts a significant influence on the difference in thetiation of wind velocities in relation to the directions of the circulation directions. The total - taken ever twenty-four hour sums - of the atmospheric precipitation levels as an averaged with to the circulation directions in Hornsund were on average 0.8 mm higher than for in Calypsobyen. Precipitation levels were higher in Calypsobyen only from theat N and E directions and in the situation of a weather wedge over Spitsbergen (Ka), however, even then the values of these differences were small (0.1-0.2 mm). Analysis of the data analysis pointed to the significance of the direction of the circulation direction and its influence on the value of differences between the meteorological elements selected. In some cases (i.e. wind velocity, precipitation level) local factors - and including orographic relations and the location of the measuring site - are decisive.

The article describes the echoes of events from the outside world in an enclosed Norbertine convent in Imbramowice and is mainly based on records taken from The Chronicle of Sophia Grothówna from the years 1703-1741. Although the Norbertine monastery was (and still is) enclosed, it maintained communications with the outside world on a regular basis but unwillingly. This article discusses just such situations. Sisters had to contend with numerous military invasions, requesting ever larger contributions and looting the surroundings belonging to the nuns’ granges. During the wars of the seventeenth century a number of plague broke out, which reached the surrounding areas in Imbarmowice. The peasants contracted the plague from the army. In other events, there were the outbreak of fires, the largest broke out in 1704, and many sisters had to leave the monastery and move to other monasteries or return to their homes. The reconstruction of the monastery took almost 20 years. The article describes information about the floods, strong winds, hunger, cold and drought that ravaged the monastery and caused major damage in convent farms.

Wzrastająca sprawdzalność prognoz pogody dla obszarów oceanicznych (falowanie, granice lodów), rozwój środków łączności, pozyskiwanie i przetwarzanie informacji nawigacyjnej i pogodowej przez statki (łączność satelitarna, oprogramowanie komputerów) oraz rozwój teoretycznych podstaw optymalizacji i podejmowania decyzji pozwala na operacyjne wykonywanie obliczeń optymalnych tras statków na oceanach. Zastosowanie programowania dynamicznego obiektywizuje wybór drogi statku uwzględniając dynamicznie zmieniające się warunki pogodowe, charakterystykę statku jako obiektu sterowania i założone kryteria optymalizacji. W obliczeniach mogą być zastosowane różne typy algorytmów z teorii grafów skierowanych, programy ewolucyjne oparte na algorytmach genetycznych oraz algorytmy stosowane w metodzie izochron. Na przykładzie wyników podróży statków rekomendowanych przez armatorski Ośrodek Polskiej Żeglugi Morskiej uzyskano 3% oszczędności czasu podróży oceanicznych w stosunku do tras sezonowych.
Increasing accuracy of weather forecasts for ocean areas (wave factors, limits of ice), development of communication means, receiving and computations of navigational and weather information (satellite communication, computer programming) as well as development of theoretical basics of optimization and decision making process permit operational computations of optimal routes for ships on the oceans. Using dynamical programming, route selection is made objectively, taking into account dynamical changing weather conditions, ship characteristics and assumed optimization criteria. For computations different types of algorithms may be used: from graph theory, evolutionary algorithms based on genetic algorithms as well as isochrone ones. Following an example of results of ships voyages recommended by Polish Steamship Company routing centre, 3% of time voyage saving in comparison with seasonal voyages were obtained.

The purpose of this study is to report particle number (PN) and particle mass (PM) concentration changes in the church during three 60-minute Masses held on a cloudy, sunny and rainy day. At each Mass with a similar number of participants the same number of candles was lit and incense was burned. The highest average PN1 and PM1 concentrations of submicrometer particles which respectively amounted to 23.9 pt/cm3 and 241.1 µg/m3 were obtained for the Mass held on a rainy day. During that Mass the maximum PN1 and PM1 concentrations (amounting to 59.4×103pt/cm3 and 632 µg/m3) were respectively about 15 and 39 times higher than the church background levels. The greatest number of submicrometer particles (about 18.5×109) was inhaled by an average participant of the Mass held on a sunny day and it was approximately 7 times higher than the number that would have been inhaled at the same time outdoors. The greatest mass of such particles (about 195.4 µg) was inhaled by an average participant of the Mass held on a rainy day and it was approximately 8 times higher than the mass of particles that would have been inhaled outdoors during the same time.

Renewable energy resources have become a promissory alternative to overcome the problems related to atmospheric pollution and limited sources of fossil fuel energy. The technologies in the field of renewable energy are used also to improve the ventilation and cooling in buildings by using the solar chimney and heat exchanger. This study addresses the design, construction and testing of a cooling system by using the above two techniques. The aim was to study the effects of weather conditions on the efficiency of this system which was installed in Baghdad for April and May 2020. The common weather in these months is hot in Baghdad. The test room of the design which has a size of 1 m3 was situated to face the geographical south. The test room is thermally insulated and connected to a solar chimney which generates a convection current to draw the air out of the room through a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger was submerged in a water tank of 2 m length, 1 m width and 1 m height. It was also covered with a layer of soil mixture with a thickness of 10 cm. The experiment simulates the natural conditions of a shallow water surface, connected to the room from the other side. The study results revealed that the air temperature inside the test room was lower than that of the ambient air outside. Pearson correlation coefficient showed that there was a strong direct relationship between solar radiation, temperature and wind speed from one side and the cooling efficiency from the other side. Also, there was a negative correlation between relative humidity and cooling efficiency.

W referacie przestawiono wprowadzenie do problematyki opracowywania numerycznych modeli prognoz pogody. Omówione zostały zagadnienia tworzenia modeli globalnych, regionalnych i mezoskalowych wraz z procedurą tzw. „zagnieżdżania modeli”. Przedstawiono charakterystykę mezoskalowego modelu UMPL dla obszaru Polski wraz z zasadami konstrukcji siatki obliczeniowej modelu oraz wyborem odwzorowań kartograficznych dla map zawierających horyzontalne rozkłady parametrów meteorologicznych. Oryginalnym wynikiem przeprowadzonych badań jest uzyskiwanie pionowych przekrojów atmosfery wzdłuż dowolnej trasy. Otrzymywane produkty wykorzystywane są do osłony meteorologicznej kraju, a w szczególności do zabezpieczenia działań lotnictwa.
The paper presents a concept of application of non-standard atmospheric parameters charts, determined on the basis of the UMPL (Unified Model for Poland Area) mesoscale model data, to synoptic analysis. Effective weather forecasts for aviation, including additional information about vertical profiles of meteorological elements, require objective forecast of the atmospheric state based on the results of numerical models and remotely sensed data. The procedure can be applied to points of geographical coordinates corresponding e.g. to a planned route of an aircraft.

The objective of this paper was to compare between agro-climatic zones developed from 10-year interval of weather data from 2005–2014, 20-year interval of weather data from 1995–2014 and the zoning developed by [NORELDIN et al. 2016] using 30-year interval from 1985–2014 in the old cultivated land of Egypt in the Nile Delta and Valley. Monthly means of weather data were calculated for each year, and then monthly values for 10-year and 20-years were calculated for each governorate. Basic Irrigation scheduling model (BISm) was used to calculate reference evapotranspiration (ETo). Analysis of variance was used and the means was separated and ranked using least significant difference test (LSD0.05). Our results showed that agro-climatic zoning using 20-year values of ETo was similar to the zones developed with 30-year values of ETo, with different values of average ETo in each zone. Furthermore, using 10-year values of ETo resulted in higher values of ETo in each zone, compared to 20-year and 30-year ETo values. However, the average value of ETo over the three classifications was close to each other. Thus, depending on the availability of weather data, either zoning can be sufficient to develop agro-climatic zones.
Celem pracy było porównanie agro-klimatycznych stref wyznaczonych na podstawie dziesięcioletnich danych pogodowych z lat 2005–2014, dwudziestoletnich danych pogodowych z lat 1995–2014 i stref wyznaczonych przez NORELDINA i in. (2016) z trzydziestoletniego przedziału danych z lat 1985–2014 odnoszących się do terenów uprawnych w delcie i dolinie Nilu (Egipt). Dla każdego roku obliczono miesięczne średnie danych pogodowych, a następnie miesięczne wartości w 10- i 20-letnich przedziałach czasowych dla każdego gubernatorstwa. Wykorzystano model harmonogramu podstawowych nawodnień (BISm) do obliczenia ewapotranspiracji obliczeniowej (ETo). Użyto analizy wariancji, a różnice średnich określano za pomocą testu najmniejszej istotnej różnicy na poziomie p < 0,05. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że strefy agro-klimatyczne ustalone według dwudziestoletnich danych ETo były podobne do stref określonych na podstawie trzydziestoletnich danych ETo (różne średnie wartości ETo w każdej strefie). Wykorzystanie dziesięcioletnich danych ETo dało w efekcie wyższe wartości ETo w każdej strefie w porównaniu z uzyskanymi na podstawie dwudziesto- i trzydziestoletnich danych. Średnie wartości ETo w trzech systemach klasyfikacji były jednak zbliżone do siebie. Dlatego, w zależności od dostępności danych pogodowych, każdy ze sposobów ustalania stref będzie wystarczający, by wyznaczyć strefy agro-klimatyczne.

During the last several years, as a consequence of the greenhouse effect, an increasing number of storms was observed in Poland. Storms are often categorized as catastrophic. This article demonstrates the main factors leading to serious damage of trees. Breaking and falling down trees or branches causes significant property damages and may contribute to deaths. It would be possible to prevent some accidents if there were any diagnostic methods that could predict imminent fracture of trees. In many cases competent care is enough, especially in canopy pruning and planting planning. To reach this goal, it is necessary to raise public awareness in this field.
